Three-peat?

In sports, a three-peat is winning three consecutive championships. In college football, no team has ever won three straight titles in the AP poll, the coaches’ poll, the Bowl Championship Series or the College Football Playoff. After winning the National Championship game for the second year in a row, the University of Georgia football team will attempt to be the first team to win three championships in row. Both Alabama and USC have come close, but couldn’t win that third championship game in a row. As I walked out of SoFi stadium on January 10th to the chants of “Go Dawgs” following the UGA win over TCU, I thought about that New Year’s Day back in 1981 when we beat Notre Dame for the 1980 National Championship. As an 18 year old freshman, I didn’t think it would take another 41 years to win it again. So, when we finally beat Alabama last year to earn that top spot in the nation, I felt a great sense of relief.

There’s no doubt UGA is currently on a roll, finishing this year 15-0. The Bulldogs have more national championships (2) than losses (1) over the past two seasons. Our Editorial Director seems to think this has something to do with OC Todd Monken being a product of the Falcon football program under Coach Jim Rexilius at her alma mater, Wheaton North High School. There’s no question Kirby Smart knows how to pick the right people to get the job done. St. Simons Island’s own Jack Podlesny also made some important contributions to get the team where they are today. In any case, they have been an exciting team to watch! Next year, the Bulldogs have an opportunity to play for a three-peat. That is something not even the most rabid UGA fans would have ever dared to imagine! Unbelievable!

fter a three year hiatus, the Christ Church Tour of Homes will return on March 18. For this 70th anniversary of the tour, for the first time ever, all of the homes featured are on Sea Island. There will also be a special focus on the church and its history. Docents in and around the church will present historic narratives highlighting many individuals who have made important contributions to the church and our community since 1736.

This casually elegant oceanfront cottage was designed for entertaining with modern and classic architectural styles inspired by Mediterranean and European travels. Flanked by two 17th century carved lions, the entry loggia beckons your eye straight to the sea. Inside the home, arched-frame hallways give way to breathtaking views of the ocean and garden. An Island Tradition

The 70th anniversary Tour of Homes will concentrate its focus on Sea Island homes with transportation provided by bus to Sea Island from Christ Church, Frederica and shuttle service between the homes once on Sea Island. Patrons can get a generous glimpse of the interior and surrounding grounds of the six homes featured on the tour. 2023 Tour Chair Sharon Altenbach says, “Each home is different and affords the opportunity to see varying styles of architecture, interior design, custom renovation, and new construction techniques. There will be homes with ocean front grandeur, peaceful marsh front views, lakeside living and of course a location ‘on the drive.’”

After touring the homes, patrons will return by bus to Christ Church where some very special activities will be taking place. But before we get to those, here’s a little information about the history of the tour and its purpose. Founded in 1954 by Gladys Fendig and Mrs. Ira Towson, the tour is presented by the Episcopal Church Women of Christ Church Frederica and funds raised are used for community outreach grants for local charitable organizations that primarily provide services and assistance benefiting women and children. These days the annual spring event depends on the generous participation of more than 300 church and community volunteers who generously

donate their time and talents. Many of these individuals have been volunteering for years and involve the entire family. It’s a wonderous thing to see this type of community involvement and equally impressive watching this well-oiled machine at work on Tour Day to make sure all goes smoothly.

2023 Tour Co-Chair Gayle McAlister sums it up well: “The Tour of Homes is unique because it’s a major fundraiser for children’s and women’s charities in Glynn County while being an important community building event

for St. Simons Island. So many volunteers with talents in numerous areas come together to showcase the best of the island via the Tour. It’s a great way for the charities to obtain funds to support their ministries and the people they serve. Of course, the homes being showcased are magnificent and definitely diverse; so there’s something for everyone. For 70 years, the Tour of Homes has been sponsored by Christ Church Frederica. Sharon and I hope everyone enjoys this year’s Tour and the fresh approach we’re taking to make it simply awesome!”

This “fresh approach” that Gayle mentions includes the larger role that Sea Island will be playing in this year’s tour, with all stops being located there. Tour Chair Sharon Altenbach and Lewis Glenn, Vice President, Real Estate Brokerage for Sea Island Properties, have been in discussions about this joint venture for more than a year. Lewis says he was especially motivated by the opportunity to

participate in Tour of Homes knowing the proceeds from the Tour primarily benefit women and children of our own community.

Not only did Lewis help arrange for Sea Island to provide all transportation needs to access Sea Island and the homes, but he also facilitated a luncheon at Ocean Forest Club with the Sea Island historian. This is a rare

opportunity for those who aren’t Sea Island Members to enjoy the elegant setting of Ocean Forest. He says, “This will be the 70th year for the Tour and Sea Island Properties wanted to help take this year’s tour to another level!”

The special luncheon at Ocean Forest Club on Sea Island is included for specified Tour Benefactors levels, otherwise tickets are available for separate purchase. There are limited seatings at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The luncheon includes a boxed lunch and features Sea Island historian Wheeler Bryan providing a lively and interesting presentation. His presentation will touch on the history of Sea Island real estate and its homes with many little-known facts and illuminating tidbits of information. You’ll want to be sure to take part in the Q&A session he holds after the talk. You’re bound to learn something you didn’t know before!

Adream came true when this magnificent property became the possession of its owners a few years ago. Although the couple had been visiting Sea Island for many years and were cottage owners for over a decade, they had always wanted a residence with a marsh view. Now, at Southern Oaks, they have their view and a gracious home that is perfect for family visits. A porte-cochère bids you a grand welcome. Once inside, the expansive living

room area beckons. Open to the second floor, it extends into a solarium that frames the infinite marsh view. Highlights include a painting by Mildred Huie over the sofa and a mixed media piece by Hans Schiebold, a celebrated East German artist who currently resides in Portland, Oregon. A den shaped like the bridge of a ship is a favorite gathering place for the owners’ five grown children and twelve grandchildren. For many years, this property was used as a corporate retreat, and the oversized refrigerator and dual dishwashers hint at the large-scale

entertaining that was done. Take note of the greenhouse window, which visually extends the kitchen to the outside, and the golden maple inlay outlining the dining room floor. A floating curved staircase leads to a breezy gallery that is suspended over the main room. Two bedrooms on the mezzanine were combined to create a bunk room for the grandchildren. Hear the Stories

Back at Christ Church, there will be even more opportunities to learn about history and more. Did you know that each year, more than 20,000 visitors visit the Christ Church, Frederica campus?!

Some come because they read about the church in Eugenia Price’s St. Simons trilogy, and they want to see it or learn more. Many visitors come to visit the cemetery, the final resting place

not only of Eugenia herself, but for several individuals that inspired her books, and many other island luminaries. Still others come to “walk where the Wesleys walked.” In any case, the historic church is an island icon and holds many stories.

On Tour Day, docents will share some of these stories by presenting historical narratives from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in various places in and around the church and the parish hall. Multiple “learning stations” will be available for visitors to learn about the church and its history, so closely entwined with the European settlement of St. Simons Island. You’ll hear about the beginning of Anglican worship here in 1736 when General James Oglethorpe arrived with two newly ordained Church of England priests, brothers Charles and John Wesley. Details about how the church parish was formed in 1808 as a Protestant Episcopal Church on the heels of the Revolutionary War and the first church structure was built in 1820 will be shared. Learn more about Anson G.P. Dodge and his arrival on the island as a 19-year old in 1879, here to observe his family’s lumber mill, and how he became so moved by the little parish that he entered Seminary in New York in order to return to St. Simons Island to minister and build a new church with his own funds, replacing the 1820 structure. Hear the story of Anna Alexander, the first African American Episcopal Deaconess, who was born circa 1865 to parents formerly enslaved on the island.

Sweet Rewards

One interesting story that you may not have heard before that will be discussed on Tour Day is how Christ Church once was known as the “Beehive Church.” One of our community’s own vast sources of knowledge, Susan Shipman, will be discussing beekeeping and honey production. The buzz is that she’ll even have some of these busy producers there to show off their handywork.

According to information provided by Susan, a letter to the Trustees of Georgia from a settler of the Town of Frederica mentioned “a great plenty of bees on the island.” When the original Christ Church building that was constructed in 1820 required some desperately needed repairs, it is reported that the congregants raised funds in a rather ingenious manner: by selling honey they harvested from a colony of honeybees found in the church’s belfry. Thus, the church earned the nickname “Beehive Church” and was known as such in the 1840s. The Women’s Missionary Society was known as the “Busy Bees.” Now, nearly three centuries

later, we’re lucky that honeybees still thrive on the island in managed colonies. There will be some for sale at Christ Church on Tour Day. Remember that each pound of honey represents 20,000 bees flying 55,000 miles, visiting 2,000,000 flowers! Pick up some to take home and enjoy their work!

Also for sale at the church on Tour Day will be copies of the Christ Church Frederica Cookbook, last published in 1992. In addition to money raised from Tour of Homes ticket sales, proceeds from the sales of these cookbooks are an additional source of funds used for the community enrichment grants provided by the Christ Church ECW. In the spirit of celebrating the Beehive Church and this bit of sweetness from its history, we thought we’d share a recipe using honey from that cookbook. This traditional Bible verse inspired cake recipe was submitted by Tour of Homes founder Gladys Gowen Fendig (with her note that it was originally published in Chrismons and Christmas Cookery, St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Panama City, Florida).

Scripture Cake

INGREDIENTS:

3½ c. sifted all-purpose flour (I Kings 4:22)

1 Tbsp. baking powder (Galatians 5:9)

¼ tsp. salt (Leviticus 2:13)

1½ tsp. ground cinnamon

½ tsp. ground nutmeg

½ tsp. ground cloves

1tsp. ground allspice (I Kings 10:2)

1 c. (2 sticks) butter, softened (Judges 5:25)

2 c. firmly packed brown sugar (Jeremiah 6:20)

2 Tbsp. honey (Exodus 16:31)

6 eggs (Luke 11:12)

1 pkg. (8 oz.) pitted dates, chopped (Deuteronomy 34:3)

2 c. raisins (I Samuel 30:12)

1 c. walnuts, chopped (Solomon 6:11)

1 c. milk (Judges 5:25)

PREPARATION:

Grease and flour an angel cake tube pan. Preheat oven to 325°. Sift flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice on wax paper. Beat the butter, sugar, honey, and eggs in a large bowl with an electric beater until they are light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Sprinkle ¼ of the flour mixture over the fruits and nuts. Add remaining flour mixture alternately with the milk to the fluffy butter mixture, beating until smooth. Stir in fruits and nuts. Spoon into prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour and 20 minutes until top springs back when lightly touched. Cool 20 minutes.

Of course Tour Day would not be complete without the always spectacular demonstration of Southern hospitality by the women of the church in the Parish Hall. Here you’ll find a bountiful spread of lite bites, including everybody’s favorite pimento cheese sandwiches and other treats, often made with recipes from the Christ Church Cookbook The volunteers who make these delightful delicacies and those who keep the tables replenished are some of the unsung heroes of the tour. Music from talented pianists will also fill the Parish Hall, making it a welcome break or conclusion to the tour. And to make absolutely certain that no

patrons will go hungry, there will also be food trucks will be on site. Killer Roast Beef & Shrimp and the Porch Cluck Truck will offer guests the opportunity to enjoy a full meal.

The Tour of Homes is a full day experience designed to showcase stunning homes and maximize enjoyment for tour patrons, with the rewarding benefit of all proceeds going directly to charities in our community that support women and children.

We’ll wrap up with some important information you need to know about the Tour of Homes on March 18. Tour Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Homes will be open during these hours. Buses begin boarding at 9:00 a.m. Sea Island Club members may pick up the Tour Brochure at Tour Stop #1, mid-island, if not beginning the Tour at Christ Church. The stop will be identified by street signage. Homes on the tour have stairs and are not accessible by wheelchairs or strollers. Out of respect for our homeowners, no photography or videotaping inside the homes is allowed. High heeled shoes are not permitted, as they may damage wood floors. No food, beverage, smoking, large bags or backpacks are permitted inside the homes.

All tickets for the tour are being sold exclusively online via a new electronic

ticketing website this year There are no physical tickets available in stores or at the church. The electronic ticketing site provides one stop shopping and allows the visitor to discover all of the events surrounding the tour. It also provides the ability to select individual customized tour options that will include the special luncheon at Ocean Forest Club hosted by Wheeler Bryan. All tickets sales are final and non-refundable. Tickets are transferrable. Everyone attending the Annual Tour of Homes MUST have a ticket with them to present before boarding a bus. As the Festival’s media partner, EIL has been working closely with everyone involved to bring you the details. There will be an artisan marketplace, thriving local farms, tasting tents and libation stations, and live music. Downtown businesses will be

Event organizer Brittany Jenson of Experience Event Planning tells us about the inspiration for the event, “It’s really about the community. I think it’s so incredible that we have all these amazing resources and creative people that are producing wonderful products and building businesses right here at our fingertips.

I want to highlight what a special community we have. It’s eclectic, it’s creative, and while

it’s got a past, it’s certainly got a bright future too! I’m really excited about it and wanted to celebrate the community while giving back to two great local non-profits, Forward Brunswick and Nunnally House.”

Forward Brunswick’s vision is to foster economic vitality as Brunswick’s community partnership leader. Forward Brunswick sees the promise in the city and wants to catalyze progress that will increase economic vitality and quality-of-life for all residents, stakeholders, and visitors to Brunswick. Forward Brunswick is deeply committed to advancing this virtuous cycle by inspiring community commitment and raising capital that will expedite and accomplish change. We want to continue to help improve amenities like Mary Ross Waterfront Park and showcase the wonderful aspects our city has to offer including the wonderful people, culture, and restaurants that call this place home.”

Since opening in May 2014, the 40 rooms of Nunnally House have lodged thousands of individuals and family members for one or two nights or sometimes three or four months. Cancer patients,

family members of critical care patients, medical students, and on-call medical staff from 29 different states and three foreign countries have all found a “home away from home” when they’ve needed it. “Not only have our patients and guests stayed in fully furnished mini-apartments, with daily room service, and within walking distance of the main hospital, but they have stayed with us at no cost whatsoever,” explained Bryan Thompson, Nunnally House and Development Coordinator for the Southeast Georgia Health System Foundation. “It is almost unheard of for a hospital anywhere, of any size, to offer on-campus lodging to such a diverse population,” added Foundation Director Krista Robitz. While donations are accepted, many, especially cancer patients, are simply unable to contribute. Ms. Robitz noted, “Our community has been generous with their support of Nunnally House, organizing events that assist us with keeping the cancer patient pantry stocked with food and snacks. Monetary donations are used to replace linens, pillows, and other furnishings, and to purchase larger items such as electric lift chairs for our handicapped and lung cancer patients. We are all quite grateful to be included as a recipient of the Southern Bounty Festival proceeds, and excited for the quality and fun that this event will bring to the Golden Isles!”

While at the Festival, don’t miss a chance to visit Queen and Grant, the newest luxury event venue in the Golden Isles. Lovingly restored with the preservationist vision of Brad and Elizabeth Piazza of Port City Partners and adjacent to Queen’s Square, this hidden gem was once home to Kentucky stock saddle horses at Oglethorpe Stables. It was later rebuilt for industrial purposes and, most recently, was a private artist’s studio brimming with natural wonder and creativity. Today, it’s been thoughtfully transformed into more than 20,000 square feet of enchanting indoor/outdoor space that can accommodate up to 500 guests. Queen and Grant features vaulted ceilings, a grand reception hall with abundant natural light, private outdoor garden, intimate courtyard, fountains, a rotating art gallery, dressing room/lounge, dedicated office space, and well-equipped catering kitchen. Georgia Grown Trail 17 is developing a community of agribusinesses on the coast, building the regional food system, and promoting agritourism. Patrick Hollaway, grant coordinator says “The thing that fires me up the most is that we are creating relationships between our farmers and other agribusinesses and our consumers and visitors. Farm 99 is a McCleery family affair, where grandparents, parents, and even the kids, get in on the fun. Amanda McCleery tells us, “When my family moved down from South Jersey where we had farm stands like ours on every corner, we were very disappointed in the selection of fresh produce at the local stores, so we figured we’d give growing produce a try.” They got busy in the garden, set up a pop-up stand in May of 2020, and so it began. “We also started our delivery day and that has been growing in popularity ever since.” When not in school, you can usually find son Dante in the garden picking whatever is needed and carrying bags to folks’ cars. Daughter Adrianna likes to hang out and help with the cash register/checkout spot. Grandmother grows all the flowers from seed and makes deliveries. Alanna (their first nonfamily employee!) keeps the greenhouses and gardens in check. Grandpa covers the role

Pitma ster Judd Foster was raised in Upstate New York. He started helping his mom in the kitchen at an early age and quickly found a passion for cooking. It wasn’t until 2000 that he fell in love with barbecue. He competed in multiple barbecue competitions in New York before moving to Atlanta in 2001. Being in the South, he began to learn and practice traditional Southern barbecue techniques. Judd’s barbecue style ranges from Texas-style brisket to Carolina hog, and he prides himself on being self-taught. In 2014, he met Kate, and they made the joint decision that this passion for BBQ should extend further than their own kitchen. Soon after their wedding in 2015, South of Heaven BBQ was born. Judd and Kate focused on catering in Atlanta and surrounding areas. Besides catering, Judd also worked as a cheesemaker at two different creameries for Many Fold Farm, making award-winning cheeses. In 2017, the same year their son Charlie was born, Creative Loafing named South of Heaven BBQ “Best Caterer in Atlanta.” In 2018, the Fosters opened their first brick and mortar in Carrollton,

GA (which they quickly outgrew), and later landed in the Maple Street Mansion there. Now located in Brunswick, they’re continuing to introduce amazing barbecue with no boundaries. “We are thrilled to be in the Golden Isles! Artist Paula VanOtteren of Oaks & Ocean explores her native Coastal Georgia landscape with a hand lens and a finetoothed comb, focusing on the smallest, most delicate and intricately detailed

objects of the natural world. A mesh sifter separates beach sand from the tiniest of shells. An exquisitely patterned moth wing is carefully collected and preserved to be transported back to her workstation; a wooden rolltop desk covered in every imaginable find from shark teeth to honeycomb. At her desk, surrounded by her flower press, field guides, and all manner of jewelry tools and findings, is where Paula transforms these treasures into jewelry that allow the wearer to carry a piece of the Golden Isles with them, wherever they may go. Now in its fifth year, Oaks and Ocean grew out of a love of nature and a desire to foster connection to it. As a family, she, her husband, and two young daughters, are avid collectors. Their home is filled with framed pressed plants and cabinets filled with a carefully organized collection of shells and fossils. Paula had enjoyed making jewelry for many years prior to Oaks & Ocean’s beginning and bringing these two passions together led her to find new ways to create with the small treasures they found. Paula’s

hope is that her work strengthens both locals’ and visitors’ connection to the beaches and maritime forests of her lifelong home. Don’t miss this opportunity to see her work in person at Southern Bounty. Until then, explore and find a treasure of your own!

Coastal Creations owner Jill Strickland grew up on Cape Cod and has always loved the ocean. She says, “My love for the beautiful coral reefs of the Caribbean and the Florida Keys inspired the coral theme for my glass art. While living in the Florida Keys 25 years ago, I met my future husband, Bill. Since then, we married and had two children, Gage (20) who is attending the College of Coastal Georgia, studying business, and Peyton (19) who is attending the University of Georgia to study marketing.” She creates her masterpieces using the tedious process of fusing glass. This is done using sheets of glass, hand-cut into strips, which are meticulously placed together in a unique pattern. Each creation is fused in a 1400°+ kiln. Jill explains, “This hobby of mine quickly turned into an online business. As a pre-K paraprofessional, during the pandemic, I had a ton of time on my hands when the country was locked down. With all my spare time, my daughter and I worked hard on expanding my coral creations

and growing my small business. One day Bill and I wish to return to the Keys and open a little glass coral gift shop.”

It will be the sweet music of Rider that you hear while strolling around the Festival. This alt-country rock band with classic rock influences and a little bit of twang was founded in Brunswick in 2019. At its core is the husband-and-wife duo Chris and Laurie Rider, both singing and playing rhythm guitar. Joining them are Matt Starling on bass guitar, Josh Kirkland on lead guitar, and Mike Alongi on drums. Chris and Laurie have been writing songs and singing together for over 20 years. They first met in Waycross, Georgia, and not only started their family there, but also met bandmates Matt and Josh. The Riders moved from Waycross to the Georgia coast and, after trying different variations and line-ups, settled on the name Rider. Their first album, One Last Taste, was released in late 2022 and is available on all major music streaming services. Give it a listen!

What began with Bill Hendrix’s dream to create and teach art on the island back in the early 1950s has evolved from the “Island Art Center” in a ramshackle building by the airport to the vibrant non-profit community arts organization known as Glynn Visual Arts. Fittingly, it is still located near the airport, on Skylane Road, with a whimsical painted plane outside. Well-known local artist and former art instructor Betty Oliver is the Honorary Chair for Art of the Lowcountry. She has served GVA in many capacities over the years and is currently a Board of Directors Emeritus Member and Education Chair. Betty was quick to point out that when we discuss this 70th anniversary, many people don’t realize that Glynn Visual Arts is that very same arts organization that formed so many decades

ago, because it underwent numerous name changes and moves throughout the years. Betty remembers it well from the beginning, as she was one of the children who took art lessons from Bill Hendrix in those days. She is thrilled to be a part of this celebration of GVA’s history and is so proud of what the organization offers to the community today.

Betty says that back in those early days, there wasn’t much else for kids to do on the island, other than county sports, so the art lessons were a fun way to pass the time on Saturday mornings. She says “I remember thinking that I would love to come back here and do this same thing. Create art. Teach it. It definitely shaped who I am and what I have done with my life. I think art is important

in that way. It gives us a sense of a bigger, broader world. With Glynn Visual Arts, I wanted to get involved to be able to give that same opportunity to other children.” Betty is one of many of children who grew up on the island taking those Saturday morning art lessons and later in life followed their own artistic endeavors. Betty continued her study of art at The University of Georgia. After earning her B.A. in Art, M.A. in Art History, and a Ph.D. in Art Appreciation/ Aesthetics, Betty served as Professor of Media Arts at what is now known as Kennesaw State. She’s an active member of many art societies and is a fabulous artist in her own right. We’re lucky to have so many talented artists like her still active in our local arts community and sharing their gifts.

“At GVA, our mission is to reach people through art; to speak to their souls as well as to their bodies, visually. Because schools can no longer provide art instruction, we need to create this interest and bring people in who don’t know that they need art. To reach the underserved in a way that contributes to their well-being but maybe in a way that they have never experienced and have had no access to.” Betty says, “Unfortunately, GVA is at a disadvantage because we have no governmental support and we’re often overlooked as a non-profit. We don’t have big grant money coming in. Many people think that we’re just another art gallery, but that’s a misconception. While we have several talented artists, GVA is not operated as a venue just for member artists to sell their

are busy bees working behind the scenes to get everything in place for an exciting year of events and to spread the word about the Art of the Lowcountry. They’ve shared some details with us about what we can expect to see as we move through the anniversary year.

Betty continues, “While there are many challenges, we all love it. The greatest thing about working at GVA is that they truly love what they’re doing and who they work with. I’m glad we can pay tribute to all the changes and growth and to the cultural gifts that make this region so special.”

The Art of the Lowcountry events planned by GVA celebrate what makes our region so unique. If you’re wondering what the Lowcountry is exactly, this term was created to describe low-lying coastal areas located below the Fall Line. The Fall Line is a geographic region in which the hard rock of the mountains reaches the softer sand of the coastal plain. Not only is the Lowcountry region located in the lower portion of the state, but the land is also sunk lower into the water. For these reasons, the area is referred to as the “Lowcountry.” And yes, it applies to our south coastal areas of Georgia, as well as those in South Carolina.

One of the most distinct features of the Lowcountry is its alluring light. As they describe it, “Golden. Warm and welcoming, then shimmering as it spills into the day, followed by a dusky rose at days end. It is pleasantly predictable for painting.” According to our esteemed hosts, “This light and this landscape have long beckoned artists to this magical region of marshes, still rivers, graceful sea oats and live oaks draped with their wiry moss, at once clustered into molded curls, yet each distinctive from the other. The palmettos and palms await bursting with crowns of green, each slender blade casting its own sultry silhouette. And, of course, the ocean, ever

present and never still.” Just look around at the number of artists who reside, either full or parttime, in and around our Golden Isles and you will agree that the muse is alive and well here.

Planned events will showcase the art of all things that reflect the Lowcountry life, “from the palette to the palate and beyond.” This will include art by local Lowcountry cultural influencers and the dramatic and distinct landscapes they have painted, as well as the storytellers, poets and writers who have shared their magical memories of Lowcountry life. Food will be offered from culinary artisans who have elevated what has been harvested from land and seas to delicious fare in a renowned art form celebrated around the world. No celebration of the Lowcountry would be complete without also recognizing its landscape and waters that invite the pursuit of leisure in year-round recreation and relaxation.

There will be opportunities to listen and learn from legendary Gullah Geechee experts who will share the customs unique to the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. These traditions have had profound cultural influence on the visual, performing, and culinary arts and are deeply entwined with our roots here. GVA will celebrate the people and the families who have helped sustain this Lowcountry and the many artists who have documented and preserved the magnificent beauty of the Lowcountry of coastal Georgia. It is their hope that artists that may not have received popular attention or have been overlooked will now receive wider recognition.

Exciting monthly specialty workshops are planned that will focus on Lowcountry craft and art techniques like pluff mud potterymaking, basket sewing, and indigo fabric dying. There will be opportunities for plein air painting. Creative retreats on the barrier islands with Lowcountry guest speakers and artists will be offered, as well as artists’ retreat field trips. Some additional special anniversary year events planned include a VIP Sponsor Thank You celebration, a 70th Birthday Party at GVA in April, a GVA Member Family Day in the Fall, and a Halloween Family Night.

These special events will be in addition to GVA’s regular exhibitions of fine art that will take place during the year in the Portman Gallery, each month’s curated exhibit at the St. Simons Island Welcome Center, and the three juried art festivals held annually in Postell Park: April’s Art in the Park, Art Under the Oaks in September, and December’s Mistletoe Market.

GVA is striving to increase its presence at community events and to offer more opportunities for the community to interact with them. They do this by having booths or stations set up with artistic and creative activities at events like the Brunswick Rockin’ Stewbilee and PorchFest. They also opened an Art Market at their location on Skylane Road

and have started hosting an Open Air Market there as well, offering farm vendors and other artisan makers to sell their produce and products. GVA coordinates on-site art instruction at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia. They also hosts kids summer camps. They will soon be curating art displays that will be available for viewing at Hotel Simone. And don’t forget about the classes, workshops, art forums, and many other offerings presented at Glynn Visual Arts and the Pottery Studio!

One of the best ways that you can support GVA and help them celebrate this important anniversary is to attend the Art of the Lowcountry Gala signature fundraiser. This will be the shining jewel in the crown of the 70th anniversary events. The Art of the Lowcountry Gala will be held Saturday, March 4 at the A.W. Jones Heritage Center on St. Simons Island. The elegant evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will take guests from the palette to the palate. There will be live and silent auctions of incredible art, coastal excursions, and more. Three Little Birds will be serving up iconic Lowcountry cuisine that is sure to please the palate. The celebratory atmosphere will be

enhanced by jazz music performed by the Phil Morrison Trio. A sketch artist will be present to capture the festivities as they unfold. Guests will delight in all things true to the Lowcountry life and proceeds from ticket sales will contribute to the enduring mission of Glynn Visual Arts.

In addition to the general tickets to the event, there are “Friends of GVA” tickets available. Art patrons who take advantage of this special offering will receive some exclusive surprises that are currently under wraps, as well as a copy of The Sapelo Collection, a book/catalog of beautiful art prints of coastal scenes by local artists, originally published in 1997. It’s a beautiful keepsake piece. “What if every workday mattered?

What if every shift someone clocked in, what if every floor they swept, every customer they dealt with, what if it all added up? Employees are recognized and performance is measured through Touchpoints and Evaluations. Touchpoints are a quick way to give feedback and insight into performance. Managers can send frequent “High Fives” to their staff to let them know they are doing a good job. They can also send “Nudges” to give their staff insight on how they can improve.

“No one wants to go into a job every day and feel like they don’t matter. This tool gives us another way to tell our employees ‘We need you. We can’t do this without you. So, let me give you a high five to let you know you went above and beyond for that customer. That matters to us, and I want it to matter to you.’”

Evaluations are regular check-ins between managers and their staff members. GAGE Evaluations rate performance based on the 10 soft skills mentioned above. Given monthly or

quarterly, Evaluations operate as a summary of performance, often guided by the collection of Touchpoints given during an evaluation period.

UNIVERSAL EMPLOYMENT SCORE

We live in a world of measurement and metrics. Education is measured with grades, health is measured by temperature, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc., and businesses are measured by profit and customer reviews. Employment can now be measured through GAGE. GAGE is the world’s first standardized system that measures a person’s employment performance and accomplishments. It’s designed to reward good work while providing insights for areas of growth. It allows employees to build a lifelong, universal, verified record of career accomplishments, and own their work history that transfers from job to job. For employers, the score gives them the tools to be good leaders and reduce turnover, while empowering their employees in their career journey.

How the Employment Score is Calculated

The GAGE employment score is private and based on three primary categories: job history, job performance and job transitions.

Job History

Work history, verified. The longer an employee works at any one job, the better their score.

Job Performance

Soft skills, quantified. Touchpoints and Evaluations are tallied during each evaluation period and contribute to the employee’s score.

Job Transition

GAGE recognizes that transitioning jobs is part of life and growth. Employees can submit two week notices through the app with templated resignation letters. Proper resignations increase the Employment Score. No more No-Call, No Shows!

Employment Score Rating

The GAGE Employment Score starts at 500. A score of 750 and above is excellent, 501 to 750 is great, 300 to 499 is the growth zone, and 1-300 needs improvement.

Private and Protected

The GAGE score is private. The employee controls who contributes to it and who sees it. The score algorithm tracks patterns. If there is a manager that gives too frequent “High Fives” or “Nudges” the algorithm notices those patterns and adjusts to create balance and protect from misuse. Another form of protection is that all GAGE users can report misuse through the app. If an employee or employer believes they are being portrayed falsely they can choose to send a report to their place of business, GAGE corporate, or both the business and GAGE to investigate the situation. The user can submit the report using their name or anonymously.

It’s time to hit the pavement for some good causes. February is a big month for fundraising runs in the Golden Isles. Here are a few of the ways you can spend your Saturday mornings supporting our community.

The Heritage Race

The Heritage 5K Race and Heritage Walk returns to the Golden Isles on Saturday, February 11. The 4th year for the race, in 2023 a new course will take runners and walkers past some of Brunswick’s most historic African American neighborhoods. The race will also begin and end in the same location this year: The Brunswick African American Cultural Center at 1621 Albany Street. The race and walk will be followed by a family-friendly festival featuring community vendors,

food and drink, entertainment, and children’s activities. Packet pick-up begins at 7:00 a.m. with the 5K starting at 8:10 a.m. and walkers commencing at 8:15 a.m. The Heritage Race events will show participants from near and far why Golden Isles is Running City USA and proceeds will directly benefit and impact the local community. The Bridge Run

On Saturday, February 18, runners and walkers take to the Sidney Lanier Bridge in Brunswick for the Southeast Georgia Health System Foundation Bridge Run. Unique

among bridge runs, this signature event for the Health System and the Golden Isles, take place on the tallest span in the state at 480 feet high above the Brunswick River and 5K runners cross its 7,780foot span twice. The event is certified by the U.S. Track and Field Association as the toughest 5K in Georgia, and if that’s not enough to challenge you, there’s also a 10K Double Pump. This race is not for the timid and should only be attempted by those who have properly trained. But if you aren’t a serious runner, don’t feel left out; there’s something for everyone here! The Bridge Run includes a fun walk after the completion of the timed races, followed by a family-friendly festival featuring community vendors, food and drink, entertainment, and activities for kids. Proceeds benefit the Health System’s cancer and cardiac care programs. There is also a Pasta Party & Vendor Expo at the foot of the bridge on Friday, February 17 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. where runners can pick up their race packets and do a little carb-loading. On Saturday, registration and check-in begins

Super Dolphin Day

The 44th Super Dolphin Day Race fundraiser benefiting Oglethorpe Point and St. Simons Elementary Schools takes place on Saturday, February 25 in the Village on St. Simons Island. Since 1994, St. Simons Elementary PTA and Oglethorpe Point Elementary PTA have

worked together on this event which now attracts over 1,500 participants and spectators annually. This event has become a great opportunity for local businesses to support both schools through sponsorships and silent auction items. The day’s fun includes 5K and 10K races and a one-mile Fun Run, plus the always exciting mascot race, a fantastic silent auction with items generously donated by our local businesses, an Expo featuring community organizations and businesses, and activities for kids like face painting, games, and more. Races begin with the 10K at 7:00 a.m. Registration is now open on active.com. On Friday, February 24, there will be a Food Truck Run Fest and packet pick-up. Brunswick Rocks is a 501c3 nonprofit bouldering gym within the historic Kress building at 1509 Newcastle Street in downtown Brunswick. Their mission is to provide a fun learning environment for selfimprovement and self-confidence, promoting health, fitness, and personal growth for people of all abilities. They will be working with other community partners and nonprofits to provide a place where kids can

be kids, progress at their own pace, learn that effort equals improvement, and ultimately provide opportunities beyond the gym. Even community members who don’t have means to pay for a membership will have the chance to volunteer 5 hours/month at Brunswick Rocks or a partner non-profit in exchange for a membership. MEMORY MATTERS RECEIVES GRANT

The Georgia Alzheimer’s Foundation recently presented a $60,000 grant to Memory Matters Glynn to support its mission of supporting, educating, and enriching the lives of individuals dealing with memory issues and the people who care for them. The grant funds included proceeds from the October 2022 Golden Isles Alzheimer’s Walk. Located in Brunswick, Memory Matters provides free resources, social activities for persons with memory impairment, and support groups in Glynn County. “We are so proud to support an organization like Memory Matters,” said Andrea Mickelson, Executive Director of the Georgia Alzheimer’s Foundation. “In addition to supporting research, the Foundation is passionate about supporting those living with cognitive issues and their caregivers. Sea Palms Resort on St. Simons Island will host the 23rd Annual American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Fashion Show and Luncheon on Saturday, February 11. Presented by Vincent Arlauskas,M.D., Steven Barrett, M.D., and Bradley Easterlin, M.D., this annual event in association with Relay for Life Glynn County includes a delicious

luncheon and a fabulous fashion show of the seasonal looks from several of our local boutiques modeled by breast cancer survivors. Celebrating Black History Month

Selden Park in Brunswick traces its history back almost 110 years as a center of education and recreation for the African Americans in Glynn County. Before becoming a county park, the site was the home of a teachers’ institute that flourished at the beginning of the 20th century. The school, which originally opened at a downtown Brunswick location in 1903, realized the vision of the Rev. Samuel G. Dent, Sr., who had attended Morehouse College. It was established to provide African Americans with teacher training and courses in trades such as agriculture, carpentry, cooking, nursing, printing, and stenography.

Within a few years after opening, the school was named Selden Institute in honor of Dr. Charles Selden, a medical missionary to China, who provided financial support. By 1914, enrollment was 147, and a new location –today’s Selden Park – had been acquired. A brick administration building was constructed, which contained classrooms and a girls’ dormitory. The 1920 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of Brunswick also shows a separate boys’ dormitory and other buildings. Students participated in a drama club, a choral group, and sports such as baseball and football. The school continued until 1933, when it was

merged with a similar institute and moved to Cordele, Georgia.

After World War II, the site became a public park and, during segregation, provided an important recreation and social center for the African American community. Most of the school buildings were razed, with the exception of the headmaster’s cottage and the gymnasium, where entertainers, including James Brown, Sam Cooke, and Otis Redding performed during the 1950s and 1960s. Hundreds of children learned to swim in the park’s pool, and churches and schools held picnics there. In Voices from St. Simons, edited by Stephen Doster,

St. Simons Island native Bernice Wilma Myers describes a “penny club” at her school to finance the end-of-year picnic, “You would bring your money in to save up for a picnic at Selden Park.”

Today, Selden Park provides venues for activities enjoyed by all ages. The original gymnasium was replaced in 2007, leaving the headmaster’s cottage as the only remaining structure of the Selden Institute.
