Founder Manlio Mattoli established Mattoli in 1923 as a small workshop producing street furniture such as benches, lighting poles and fountains. His sons, Giuseppe and Antonio, took over in 1950.

A new era began in 1999 when Antonio’s children, Manlio, Massimiliano and Marta, entered the business. In 2011, Mattoli set up an export sales department to grow its international markets.

Mattoli’s terrazzo tiles are genuinely environmentally friendly, because cements and sands used in the mixture are sourced through recycling. The marble chips and marble powders come from marble block waste.

MATTOLI: TOP MAKER OF TERRAZZO TILES

Mattoli holds an important place in the industry as a manufacturer and supplier of terrazzo, marble, granite and natural stone tiles. Its presence in the Australian market is the direct result of its long-term relationship with International MTC.

Mattoli is an ideal supplier to work with, according to Stefano Mammi, managing director at International MTC, because of the “personal relationship” it has built over time, as well as “their reliability and fairness when it comes to dealing with big projects”.

International MTC has been working with Mattoli for 12 years. In that time, it has introduced the supplier to key retailers in Australia and helped close on a number of large deals for major projects around the country.

100 years

Looking back over the past 100 years, Mattoli can identify one major source of its survival and ongoing growth: family. Today, the company is led by what is now the third generation of the Mattoli family in the business. The firm employs about 40 people across production and head office functions.

Founder Manlio Mattoli established the business in 1923 as a small workshop producing street furniture such as benches, lighting poles (for public lighting), fountains and other custom-made items. His sons Giuseppe and Antonio took over in 1950 and introduced modern machinery to produce concrete floors.

By 1967, they had made a pivotal move to change the plant location to Jesi, a town in the province of Ancona in the Marche region, central Italy. The region is best known for its Verdicchio (white

wine) production and the medieval walls that surround it.

Driven by high foreign demand, it added machinery in 1980 that was more automated and production increased significantly. The business expanded in 1985 when Mattoli acquired a company that was involved in marble and natural stones.

A new era began in 1999 when Antonio’s children, Manlio, Massimiliano and Marta entered the business. In 2011, it set up an export sales department to grow its international markets and continue

the work that had started years ago in expanding its sales network.

Today Mattoli has a worldwide reputation for terrazzo tiles, marble, granite and natural stone. The manufacturing of marble, granite and natural stones takes place in both Italian and overseas quarries.

The firm’s production facilities in Jesi operate on an area that measures 60,000sqm and equipped with up-to-date automated systems that allows for over 10,000sqm of finished products on a daily basis.

In addition to Australia and New Zealand, the Mattoli range is distributed in the US, Canada, Middle East, North Africa and widely available in Europe.

Australian customers

Mattoli’s unique terrazzo tiles are made of stone aggregates. It recycles marble waste from stone quarries, crushes it and enhances it in an infinite array of colours, sizes and finishes.

The Australian market has always responded well to terrazzo tiles and marble elements, and is now requiring large sizes, according to Mattoli. The firm has a direct connection with Australia, as the supplier of outdoor tiles for the Anzac Memorial in Sydney. In 2017, Mattoli terrazzo tiles were provided for Sydney (Kingsford Smith) International Airport.

In Australia, customers frequently ask for a “distinctive"

product that stands out from other standard products. In particular, they ask for unusual mixtures of marble chips, and constantly evaluate new natural stones and different colours for their outdoor and indoor spaces. Particular attention is also given to the production of tiles that are ecofriendly and sustainable.

One emerging trend is to match different natural stone and marble chip elements with similar colours in the marble chip mix. For example: staircases, counter tops, vanity tops, flooring and coverings, etc.

Key trends

Mattoli is strongly rooted in the Italian market and wellpositioned to forecast some key tile trends. In recent years, the firm has seen growth in the popularity of terrazzo tiles that are “often imitated by the world of ceramics”. The company expects a continuation of this trend.

Mattoli’s terrazzo tiles are highly differentiated compared to ceramic terrazzo because of their authenticity. They are genuinely environmentally friendly because cements and sands used in the mixture are sourced through recycling. The marble chips and marble powders come from marble block waste. These blocks are discarded for sizes and not suitable for processing, which means all the mixtures are free of chemicals.

Mattoli is confident that there will always be demand for stone, marble and natural granites, because of their use in luxury buildings.

Product development

Mattoli is always on the lookout for new colours in natural materials, both marble chips and new blocks (of stone). It is also committed to using photocatalytic cements for its stone aggregates.

The wide variety of raw material chips used in Mattoli’s tile production means it can create endless combinations of colours. The company can customise its products for architects and designers.

Its advanced machinery allows it to manufacture a limitless number of natural stone surfaces and geometries that are only limited by a customer’s imagination.

POST-PANDEMIC BATHROOM STYLE TRENDS

IN AUSTRALIA, BATHROOMS PRE-PANDEMIC WHITE OR GREY TILES WERE REPLACED BY CALMING BOTANICAL COLOURS DURING THE PANDEMIC. NOW POSTPANDEMIC BATHROOMS HAVE SHIFTED TOWARDS COMFORT AND SELF-CARE, OPENING UP NEW POSSIBILITIES — AND, HOPEFULLY, AN EXPANDING MARKET.

Household bathrooms remain a core source of income for Australian tile installers. New trends in floor coverings such as water resistant laminate, hybrid and vinyl plank may lead to some reduction in tile installation for kitchens, but most Australians still lean towards tile in truly "wet" areas such as bathrooms and laundries.

Looking ahead to FY2023/24, the good news for tilers is that trends in bathrooms have entered a new stage. This comes after a long period of semi-stagnation, when most bathrooms relied on larger format tiles in any colour — as long as it was a shade of grey or white.

That is good news for tilers (and the tile industry itself). While new designs can be simply integrated into newer home builds, changing trends will lead many more households to opt for renovations. That helps to expand the overall market, something which could be vital during the coming financial year, as new build business continues to slow.

PANDEMIC-ERA BATHROOMS

Bathroom designs began to shift during the pandemic, when styling attempted to provide an environment of calm and reassurance. There was a surge

in designs such as "botanical" tiles, which managed to bring some of the outside inside, helping to relieve the stress on homeowners largely confined to their own premises.

However, the overall push during the pandemic was for more bathrooms, rather than higher quality bathrooms. With whole families confined to their homes during lockdowns for weeks and even months, additional bathrooms became a necessity rather than a luxury.

Australia's Housing Industry Association (HIA) reports that during the first two years of the pandemic (July 2020 to June 2022) the number of new bathroom installations increased by 26 per cent and 22.1 per cent to 542,600 new bathroom installations in FY2021/22, a record high. The value of bathroom installations went up by 24.2 per cent to $6.5 billion in FY2021/22.

EMERGING DESIGNS POST-PANDEMIC

Post-pandemic, bathroom design has become much more expansive. The majority of Australia's white collar workers now spend at least one day of the week working from home. More recently, Australia is seeing the beginnings of a more austere economy, which means households must "choose wisely" when spending limited budgets. Combined, those changes have led to home improvement being seen more as home investment. There are also additional economic factors at work.

According to Tom Devitt, senior economist with the Housing Industry Association (HIA): “Activity is likely to remain elevated, while the detached housing market declines. This is because renovations are an attractive alternative when rising interest rates and construction cost blowouts are making the new house market increasingly unaffordable.”

After an understandable splurge in spending postpandemic, Australians are

once again becoming more sensible and responsible. An overseas holiday might provide a temporary boost, but spending that money on a new bathroom has a more lasting effect. It's not just an investment in some future hypothetical sale value, but also a material improvement in the day-to-day life of a family.

The end result should be — with a bit of luck — that spending on bathrooms remains stable through FY2023/24, with

perhaps a slight reduction in the number of bathroom fitouts, but an improvement in expenditure per bathroom.

A LITTLE HISTORY

To really understand some of the design changes the industry is beginning to see in context, it's helpful to take a look back over the slightly surprising history of bathrooms in Australia.

Since the early-2000s the design of high-end resort/spa hotel bathrooms has had a profound effect on bathroom design in Australia. There is something of an interesting economic story behind why that is the case.

In the mid-1980s international hotels began to be constructed to appeal to very specific market sectors. The upper end of the hotel business grew increasingly more luxurious, and the lower end grew increasingly spartan and less expensive. In the middle, there was also growth of longer-term occupancy accommodation, family-style accommodation, sports-based hotels (boating, tennis, golf, for example), and health spas.

The development of the high-end tier of resort hotels was a very positive one for several Asian and South-East Asian nations. Attempts to grow a tourism industry in these nations had not always been so successful, largely because they were a mingling of first-world and third-world infrastructure and cultures. Turn a corner in 1990s Kuala Lumpur, and you could go in the space of 10 metres from a super-modernist environment to the Malaysia of the 1950s.

The resort hotel solved this problem. As the hotel was itself the destination and the purpose of the journey, it could be equipped as a selfcontained area, with its own rules and regulations, delivering an environment in which inexperienced travellers would feel safe.

While these hotels brought a form of economic magic to developing regions in the early 1990s, by the turn of the century problems began to show up. There was first of all the currency crisis of 1997, followed by the 2001 9/11 attack on New York's World Trade Centre. These events not only reduced the number of guests at resort hotels, they also reduced expenditure per guest.

Yet from the Australian

perspective, these crises had one key effect: the cost of holidays to these “exclusive”, very high luxury hotels in Asian destinations fell dramatically. The Australian market was targeted with a wide range of packages, and the trade was boosted by a similar reduction in airfares.

The result was that a wide band of the Australian demographic experienced truly luxurious hotel accommodation for the first time in their lives. This had a profound effect on design sensibilities. One reason that bathrooms are such a focus of this kind of hotel design is that studies show guests typically

spend around 25% of the time in their rooms in the bathroom. Particularly in warmer climates, the bathroom can become a strong focus for activity.

Returning to their own houses, the Australian tourists brought with them a sense of their home architecture that was often quite changed. The bathroom evolved from a functional place of quick preparation, to a room that could provide a positive experience itself.

Over the space of the next 15 years those experiences were filtered down to create

9 BATHROOMS

the familiar "resort-ish", luxelook bathroom, with big white tiles that emphasised the expansiveness of the room — a design that came to dominate Australian bathroom design.

THE NEW BATHROOM

It took the pandemic to start to move the market away from white, and the post-pandemic period has affirmed that shift. Pandemic bathrooms design emphasised calm and reassurance, through bright lifeaffirming designs. Today, postpandemic, the focus has shifted again, towards comfort and new forms of self-care.

Tile Today has identified four key trends that are at various stages of reforming Australian bathrooms. While they are to some extent independent, they also interlock in interesting ways

to create new opportunities for tilers. If there is a single theme that runs through these trends, it's a bias towards making bathrooms a "warmer" experience, as an alternative to flashier styling.

TREND 1: THE WINDOW

Flick through any interior style magazine today, and you will likely be struck by how many high-design bathrooms now have windows as a prominent feature.

Where older-style bathrooms tend to have smaller windows, often frosted and set high on the wall, new bathrooms have large windows that provide the bathroom with abundant light. Of course this means there are privacy concerns that need to be met, but in return bathrooms

become a space where it is much more pleasant to spend some time during the daylight hours.

An interesting consequence of this is a move towards textured tiles. Single-source interior lighting can render textures flat, but radiant natural daylight makes textured tiles seem "soft" and touchable. Designers are doing interesting things with pale, non-white tones, an almost river-stone look, that feels both luxurious and grounded at the same time.

Windows also tend to shift the focus from floor tiles to wall tiles. Where it is often the case that bathroom design will begin with the floor, and then move to matching wall tiles, the reverse trend is taking hold to some extent.

TREND 2: TERRACOTTA, BROWN OCHRE AND AMBER BROWN TILES

A little paradoxically, with more natural light, there's also more of an opportunity to explore darker tile tones on walls, without producing an overly dark bathroom. (Though saying that, the British in particular are adept at making quite dark bathrooms very inviting.)

Used correctly, these darker colours create a comforting, warm experience. One associated trend is to use smaller, multi-toned tiles in these darker colours, adding a sense of texture and pattern.

Much care has to be taken in properly matching those wall tiles with appropriate floor tiles. Properly executed, these

bathrooms seem to glow with warmth, creating a sense of a private, cosseted space. With this does come more concern with how these rooms will be lit in the early morning and late evening hours. It is often the case that lighting will be split between bright, task-oriented lighting in areas for activities such as shaving and makeup application, with softer ambient lighting for bathing and general self-care.

TREND 3: A TOUCH OF THE SPA

While spa-style design has often had an outsized influence on Australian bathrooms, when taken to an extreme it can provide an experience that seems a little institutional and cold. The new spa trend is about

introducing small elements of the spa, which usually comes down to wood trimmings on vanities and mirrors, and medium to large format tiles in natural tones.

A classic case of this shift is the use of benches in many spa-inspired bathrooms. While this is an interesting feature architecturally, providing seating for six in a mediumsized bathroom seems a little odd. In the more modern spainspired bathroom the bench is replaced by a comfortable chair, or even a lounge, providing a more accessible experience of relaxation.

There's also a balance required between providing an uncluttered, calming space, and adding those personal touches that produce

a space which encourages the homeowner to slow down and spend a little more time on personal care.

Spa bathroom tiles tend towards more earthy tones with some texture, though some variants go for very dark tones, and even near-black, to create a more elegant aspect. These designs also work well with skylights rather than windows, useful in situations where privacy is otherwise difficult to design in.

TREND 4: THE WET ROOM

While this trend has been bobbing around in the background — especially in the US — for a number of years, it's beginning to achieve more prominence in Australia for 2023. The wet room basically refers to a large area of the bathroom that has been fully waterproofed, and is used to contain both the shower and a bathtub.

There are a number of reasons for its popularity. One of the main

reasons is that this opens up a wide space for the shower. In terms of the increase in ageingin-place, that makes it very easy to render assistance to an older person, and to provide aids such as chairs and rails. It's also useful for bathing children in the toddler range.

In the spa sense, people also like to combine the bath and shower, perhaps soaking in the bath and ending in a brisk, cooler shower. It also makes it easier for a busy couple to get cleaned up at the same time.

While those are the advantages, from a tiler's perspective, there is serious work involved in constructing this type of bathroom. There's a considerable area that needs to be waterproofed, and, of course, these typically look best with larger format tiles, which brings up issues of slope and drainage. While it is natural to conclude that wet rooms require a large space, that is not necessarily the case. There is some excellent advice on

building smaller wet rooms from renovation company On The Ball bathrooms (OTB) based in Perth. This can be found on their website at: https://www. ontheballbathrooms.com.au/ wet-rooms-pros-and-cons/

CONCLUSION

The best news about recent shifts in bathroom designs is that tiles play a very big role in developing the new look. Other trends could be met by switching out vanities and plumbing fittings, but these changes require a more fundamental redesign.

With an emphasis shifting to quality over commonality, tilers might also be well-advised to look beyond their current tile suppliers, and to explore some of the new options available. Being able to offer more unique bathroom solutions will become an advantage, and help to build that crucial word-of-mouth marketing. n

DRAINAGE SYSTEMS FOR A HIGH-END FINISH

ALLPROOF INDUSTRIES PROVIDED INDIVIDUALLY MEASURED SHOWER DRAINAGE SHOWER CHANNELS FOR A LARGE PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT IN MELBOURNE. THIS CUSTOMISATION REMOVED MANY OF THE UNSIGHTLY VARIATIONS SEEN WITH STANDARDISED FITTINGS. ALLPROOF FOLLOWED TIGHT INSTALLATION SCHEDULES WHILE COMPLETING THE WORK.

At Victoria & Vine, a New York inspired development in the inner Melbourne suburb of Collingwood, Vision shower channels made by Allproof were installed in all 241 apartments.

The highly detailed project specifications meant the drainage requirements of the bathrooms

in these apartments had to be met on both on an aesthetic and performance level. Its overall service and a production schedule also had to fit into the challenging construction timeline.

About the project

Victoria & Vine’s 241 apartments include a $7 million penthouse

with access to a health club, infinity pool, rooftop lounge, a co-working space and business lounge.

The development was designed by Cox Architecture and built by Hickory. It is a blend of nine individual buildings 15

PROJECT – DRAINAGE
The Vision shower channel tile insert at the Victoria & Vine development in the inner Melbourne suburb of Collingwood

with a combined 200m street frontage consisting of 11 retail spaces including food and beverage offerings. The multitiered property uses a variety of materials including reclaimed brick, glazing and pre-cast panels to emulate New York’s meat packing district, and references the heritage-listed Foy and Gibson warehouse in Collingwood.

Installation issues

In construction projects there are always minor variations, and rooms are rarely laid out within 0.5mm of the exact planned dimensions. That is what would be required to achieve perfect fit for an off-the-shelf product – and it is near-impossible.

Even if this were technically possible, determining those dimensions would itself be difficult. The designer would have to provide the exact finished dimension of the room at the pre-build detailing stage. Wall build-up of linings, membrane, tiles and adhesives would have to be determined perfectly to avoid either a huge make-up of silicone, or force a tiler to squeeze in a channel that is made too large for the actual space. Such measures would ruin the aesthetic of the shower channel as well as the quality of the overall room finish.

The best solution is frequently

to select a supplier that can fabricate the channels perfectly to suit the area in each individual shower. The simple fact is that products will often need to be made-to-measure on projects that prioritise a high-end finish. Custom fabrication can deliver the modern appeal of a wall-towall channel while navigating the challenges of making an off the shelf product fit. Another consideration is the location of the outlet. In large multi-level projects, there are often structural elements or other services preventing a channel from having a centre outlet. Selecting a custom channel

allows for the outlet to be located at a point where a floor waste gully can be installed for ease of piping out, or to suit pre-installed passive fire protection.

Made to measure

Allproof Vision shower channels are manufactured from highgrade stainless steel in off-theshelf and custom sizes. The channel comes with a VF80 puddle flange which is designed to fit within a trench created in the subfloor. Waterproofing is dressed into the puddle flange as per AS 3740-2010 Figure

16
The Equator grate from the Vision shower channel range shown in a wall to wall tiled floor waste

3.9 with the channel installed over the membrane, and the channel’s outlet directed into the drainage flange.

There are some key benefits to this method. The surface area of membrane adhered to the flange is greatly reduced over a channel with an integrated flange. Also, the puddle flange can be installed prior to waterproofing, allowing all other trades to complete their role without additional delays. Should a channel with an integrated flange be selected instead, this would mean other trades could be held up by the production time of custom length channels for each room as waterproofing needs to be applied to the channel itself.

The tiler needs to leave a reveal of 80mm plus allowance for silicone where the channel is to be located. Once they are ready, measurements need to be taken for the channel length and outlet location and sent to Allproof.

Upon delivery, the shower channel cam simply be dropped into place on a bed of levelling compound, with a bead of silicone around the tiles and channel edge. The tiled floor and channel will catch surface water and the membrane will pick up any subsurface water that is able to track through the grout. The membrane then directs sub-surface water towards the outlet through falls outlined in AS 3740-2010 clause 3.4.

Selection

Cox Architecture Hickory are wellrespected companies with a large number of high-end projects in their portfolios. Experience has given them a grounded perspective on how product and supplier selections can add value to project processes, with service and quality ranked highly. Typically, Hickory will review products and share information

across their site managers so that suppliers that provide consistent, excellent service can be used repeatedly on future projects. This was a key factor in Cox Architecture and Hickory’s selection of Allproof Vision shower channels.

According to Yianni Psihogos, project coordinator at Hickory, Cox Architecture and Hickory have been “dealing with Allproof for a long time and it made sense to use them again especially with the service we get.”

Quality control

Upon being selected, Allproof provided the required installation information along with product training and technical details. Almost 400 shower channels were supplied in phases. Once Hickory completed the tiling in a sequence of rooms, it took measurements

PROJECT – DRAINAGE

and sent them to Allproof.

Allproof manufactured the channels to these measurements, thoroughly checked them through a rigorous quality and assurance process before clearly labelling each channel with its room number or reference before delivering to site for installation.

Victoria and Vine opted for a wall-to-wall channel, however, the aforementioned benefits would also apply to stock channels with the addition of removing lead times and reducing site measures.

The benefit of selecting an established drainage supplier with standardised products over smaller custom fabrication shops is being able to draw on a wide range of tried and tested products. A drainage manufacturer such as Allproof will hold stock in standard sizes and have the production techniques to ensure supply through busy periods of demand.

By selecting suppliers that specialise in specific products, installers can expect the product they receive will be fully compliant, tested to all applicable standards and suitable for use with robust warranties. For example, drainage manufacturers prioritise having an up-to-date understanding of the National Construction Code (NCC), AS/NZ Standards, installation methods and compatible systems.

Victoria & Vine had a specific aesthetic the architect and builder were looking to achieve. A different option to accomplish a modern shower design with a stock channel would be using the tile insert grate. This allows the channel to blend in with the surrounding floor tiles and becomes a very discreet drainage solution. Another solution to reduce construction costs would be to pull the channel off the side walls allowing for floor tiling either side (potentially 50mm). This means a channel can be ordered well in advance as installers aren’t reliant on getting the final tile-to-tile measurement. Additional economy could be found in utilising stock or standard sizes. n

New president will continue to add value for members

Je Kirkley comes to the presidency of the Australian Tile Council with many years of industry experience and a view to expand retail membership

Most of Jeff’s experience has been in the development, production and application of tile adhesives and associated products. As ATC president, he will help to implement and roll out the new online sales consultants training course which is currently being developed for members. He told Tile Today:

“Now that the ATC has become a national body, we have more ability to influence changes within our industry and continue to promote tiles as a high performance and an aesthetically pleasing flooring and wall option.

“The ATC remains very focused on continuing to support retailers, TAFEs and tiling apprentices with up to date technical and market information and we hope that this is incentive enough for even more people to join our ranks and become the ‘go to’ in our industry.”

In addition to creating new member resources, Jeff sees a large part of his role involves promoting the council and the tile industry. He said:

“Our industry is facing many challenges over the next few years, with trade shortages and a slowdown of the first home buyers along with plenty of regulation changes for tiles, tile applicators and waterproofers.

“The ATC continues to keep up and advise on all trends and regulations, while continuing to support registered training organisations (RTOs) such as TAFE colleges that offer tiling and waterproofing courses.

“In doing so, the ATC through our technical expert Fred Gray has been instrumental in rewriting the Australian Standards AS 3958:2023 ‘Ceramic tiles, Part 1: Guide to the installation of ceramic tiles’ which was sadly out of

Promoting tile knowledge

The Australian Tile Council has responded to requests for an online training course primarily for the needs of retailers and specifers. It has developed a course called “Understanding Tiles and Tiling” to provide knowledge and give businesses confdence that people selling or specifying tiles have an understanding of what they are selling.

Peter Carter and Bryan Vadas have both devoted a signifcant amount of time and efort to create the course, according to ATC president Jef Kirkley. Key points include:

• It will be available to all current ATC members free of charge

• Accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

• The course will be in two stages – Stage one focusing on fundamentals and Stage two is an advanced course

• The courses are designed in easy-to-follow modules with a completion certifcate at the end of each course

• The courses can be completed in sections to allow participants to tailor the completion of the course to their needs

Jeff Kirkley is the new national president of the Australian Tile Council date. We thank Fred for his enormous efforts in leading this initiative, and the industry is better off because of it.

“We also continue to offer valuable technical information via our website to all of our members, in particular our ‘Tiles and Tiling Guide’. This has become the industry ‘bible’ and is being viewed and downloaded extensively.”

Background

Jeff ‘s position as ATC president is another way he can contribute to the industry after starting his working career as a maintenance fitter at Rheem Australia in the late 70s. He followed this role with a move across to the adhesives business beginning with Polycell products. Jeff initially worked as maintenance manager and later as production site manager, for a company that manufactured a wide range building and DIY products. You could say he started in adhesives and has barely left it. As Jeff explains:

“The past 39 years has seen me hold various state and national sales and manufacturing positions with ASA, Laticrete, Bostik, RLA and now with Sika as Victorian state sales manager.

“I believe my strengths have always been focused on providing great customer service, technical knowledge and emphasise teamwork. I have always enjoyed a more personal working approach with customers and my peers.

“As I have always been passionate about the tiling industry, the ATC allows me to contribute more back into the industry that has been my employ for so long.”

Trowel Trades Awards 2023

High quality work, attention to detail and speed. These are just some of the winner’s traits of this year’s Best Overall Tiler award.

The main winner of Holmesglen TAFE’s 2023 Trowel Trade Awards, Duncan McLeod, exemplifies the ideal tile installer on a jobsite. His tiling teacher, Frank Vanzella, describes him in the following way: “He's a very quiet guy, and he just gets on with the job. He is also very modest. When you give him accolades, he just takes them on board. They are just some of his best qualities.”

Duncan is currently employed by Michael Dyson, director of ProTile Wall and Floor Tiling in Melbourne. The business has grown from doing basic domestic tiling to being involved in larger commercial projects and shopfitting. (Check out ProTile Wall and Floor Tiling’s Facebook page to see its latest work at Chadstone Shopping Centre and Victoria Gardens in Richmond.)

Michael offers praise about Duncan’s skills. He told Tile Today: “Duncan’s best attributes as an apprentice tiler would be his willingness to learn new skills and better himself as a tiler, his attention to detail, and he is keen and bright.

“What sets Duncan apart from other apprentices is he that he is trustworthy and hard working. I can trust him to complete a job to our expected level of finish without my constant involvement which has been the case whatever task he’s assigned from the beginning of his apprenticeship.”

Duncan is equally effusive about his employer. “I’ve been working with ‘Dys’ since I started so we’ve developed a great friendship as well as him being my boss. He looks after me and always challenges me to be better,” he said.

His attributes as an apprentice will probably lead to a satisfying career in the tile industry. “Duncan is a pleasant young man and when he gets older, he'll probably do well as a manager,” said Frank.

And he agrees that Duncan has a strong work ehtic. “He's someone who doesn't just want to go home

early. Sometimes I get apprentices who always ask if they can go home before it’s time to leave. Duncan was always there to get the work done properly. He just ticks all the boxes,” adds Frank.

It was Duncan’s mother who suggested he try out tiling. As he explains: “One of mum’s friends

from work heard of a tiling company that was looking for an apprentice and thought that I would be suited to it, since I’m a perfectionist. I didn’t really know what tiling entailed before I started my trial week but that was three years ago now and I’m still here doing it.”

Not surprisingly, the variety of detail-oriented tasks is something that Duncan finds appealing about being a tiler. “Some of the best things about tiling is probably the fact that there is so much involved in the process such as screeding, waterproofing, grouting, etc. You’re always doing something different every day and being able to look at your work once it’s completed and appreciate how rewarding it is,” he explains.

In addition to winning Holmesglen TAFE’s top tiling

apprentice award, Duncan was nominated at the Master Builders Association State Apprentice awards earlier this year. Both Michael and Duncan attended the ceremony at Marvel Stadium where a select number of Victorian apprentices were recognised for their exceptional skills and commitment to the building industry.

Apprentice numbers

In 2023, there were about 35 students in Frank’s classes, down from 45 in 2022. The decline is in

stark contrast to the amount of work opportunities available in the industry. Frank has similar observations and said: “There are jobs out there. They can pick and choose what they want to do.”

TAFEs are the ideal place for tilers to be properly qualified to suit a market that is more demanding and informed about what they want in their housing, buildings and renovations. To cater for the need of skilled tradespeople, Holmesglen TAFE is holding Open Days on “Construction Waterproofing” and “Flooring, Plastering, Roof Tiling, and Wall and Floor Tiling” in late August at its Chadstone campus in Melbourne. They are ideal for training and people who want to start their own businesses.

Liquid Flash 1 o ers longevity and resilience

As compared to sheet membranes, cold fluid-applied waterproofing membranes can create a "monolithic" barrier to water, without seams. They are easy to apply around complex shapes, including areas with multiple penetrations, intrusions and transitions.

Liquid-applied membranes not only deliver a superior waterproofing barrier, they also save time on the construction site. With efficiency increasingly important everywhere in construction, these membranes have rapidly become the "go to" solution for most builders.

Dribond Construction

Chemicals' Liquid Flash 1 is a reinforced, brush-applied waterproofing membrane that ranks as one of the industry's leading products in this category. It is a premixed, one-pack, waterbased, microfibre reinforced acrylic, flexible, waterproofing membrane that is easily applied with a brush to form a resilient waterproof or flashing membrane between different building surfaces.

This is a highly versatile product. It remains pliable and elastic, and is capable of bridging cracks, as well as smooth irregular surfaces. It provides excellent resistance to UV light, which means it will continue to function over a long time period even in

exposed conditions. Liquid Flash 1 comes in two base colours, grey and blue, and can be painted over with water-based acrylic paints.

As Liquid Flash 1 conforms to AS/NZS 4858 Class 3 it features high extensibility; it is a membrane that is suitable for timber-framed and timber floor construction where there may be considerable movement. The product even exceeds the SISIR (Singapore) requirements for rooftop waterproofing.

Properly stored and unopened, Liquid Flash 1 has a shelf life of up to 24 months.

Uses

Liquid Flash 1 is a waterproof membrane for roofs, balconies, retaining walls, planter boxes, internal wet areas (e.g. bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and toilets). It can be used as flashing material for roof vent pipes, parapet walls and roof sheeting/tiles. It can also be used on cement render, concrete, brick, block and building boards such as gypsum and

cement sheeting on walls and compressed cement sheeting on floors, roof and gutter repairs. The product is suitable for uses such as shower alcoves, and should be allowed to cure for three days prior to tiling. When pond testing shower installations, it is recommended that the product be allowed to fully cure over seven days before testing.

If the product is to be used in a fully-immersed application, it should be allowed to initially cure for 28 days. In general, curing takes seven days at 23C with 50% relative humidity, and should be protected from rain during the first 24 hours of curing. The product should be fully cured before use in a shower application.

Application

Apply two coats of Liquid Flash 1 to the area to be waterproofed. Apply the second coat at 90 degrees to the first as soon as it is dry (recoat time is approximately two hours at 23C and 50% relative humidity). Apply each coat thickly (approximately 1.5mm wet), allowing it to flow rather than being brushed on. Use a soft brush for best results. A final thickness of 1.5mm is required. n
