Dear Readers I have my fingers crossed that this is the last Elyi publication in Lockdown and that by the time the Sept/Oct magazine comes through your door we will be brimming with events and activities once more. Here’s hoping! This is issue no. 56 and July marks our 7th anniversary of producing the publication. I am 'cautiously optimistic' that we will be getting back up to full strength delivery-wise as well, We have continued as normal in Ely but some of the village shops were unable to take the magazine for part of the lockdown but we anticipate that will be all back to ‘normal’ for this one onwards. We currently leave copies of magazines in Witchford, Wilburton, Haddenham, Little Downham, Littleport, locations along the A10 bypass, Fordham, Soham and Burwell as well as restaurants and shops in Ely centre for people to pick up when they come in. If you live in Little Downham, Stuntney or Witchford and would like to volunteer to do a round do get in touch Tel: 07580689600. One kind reader has already volunteered to deliver 200 in Wicken, which is great. I’m afraid there aren’t funds to pay you but it’s a great way to get a bit of exercise! I hope you enjoy this magazine. It’s fab to see some open air theatre and also that the Eel Festival is happening, albeit on a smaller scale. In spite of the existing restrictions our wonderful Ely organisers still have a good number of events planned for you - stay safe!

EXPLORE ELY MUSEUM THIS SUMMER! After closing in September 2019 to begin a £2.2m National Lottery Heritage Fund redevelopment, Ely Museum was delighted to open its doors again in May.

From a new extension to house our ‘Aedwen Room’, a dedicated education and community space, to brand new light & airy galleries, filled with interactive exhibitions throughout, the Old Gaol has been completely transformed to an exciting, engaging place for children and adults alike to enjoy!
Ely Museum tells the stories of the people and the landscape of Ely and the surrounding area from prehistory to the present day. The new exhibitions explore how people have lived here over centuries and how their way of life has been influenced by the unusual landscape across the fens. The museum also highlights the many ways in which people have changed and adapted the landscape to suit their needs. Downstairs, the galleries explore the early history of the area from the earliest fossils to the medieval period. SAVE OUR SWIFTS Swifts fly to the UK from Africa each spring to breed but their population has fallen by more than half in the last 25 years.
For a while now Centre E in Ely has been working in conjunction with Dick Newell & Bill Murrells from Action for Swifts. They now have a total of 12 boxes on top of the building in Barton Road to try and help increase the numbers of these special birds. Swifts placed on the amber list for conservation status in the uk with the RSPB. Swifts are known to favour habitats in older buildings with a lot of ‘nooks and crannies’, however with the amount of re-development of these buildings and more and more new buildings being built they are finding it far more difficult to find places to create a safe nest for them to lay their eggs. Matt from the Centre along with Dick and Bill have worked hard to get the point of swifts using the boxes, 2 of which have cameras linked up, you can find the live feed to these on youtube. https://youtu.be/N9HgXafAVsg Out of the 2 boxes linked up to cameras so far, we are delighted to say 2 eggs have been laid in a nest in one of the boxes, which we are eagerly anticipating these to hatch in the near future.

There are a few places locally supporting these fascinating birds with safe spaces to hopefully encourage swift growth, we will be continuing to monitor the box usage of the swifts and we hope in time to link up more cameras so everybody can continue to learn and see how these species live and grow.

If you were watching BBC Spring watch recently you will have seen that the national efforts to grow the swift population featured quite heavily.. A Wilburton man has been praised by host Chris Packham for the "astonishing achievement" of making 27,000 swift boxes since he retired 13 years ago. Mr Stimpson said it was "'absolutely brilliant' to receive support from the BBC Springwatch presenter. He said the boxes he makes are like normal nest boxes but "the bird enters from just underneath the box". "The problem is that we've renovated so many houses, the swift nests in little holes in old style roofs and they're just being filled in so there is nowhere to go," he said. Mr Stimpson said making the boxes "started as a hobby and now it's pretty much a full-time job". In his online video Chris Packham says he salutes Mrs Stmpson's amazing achievement and looks forward to him hitting the 30,000 mark for his 80th birthday later in the year!

Visit the current exhibition at The Stained Glass Museum which is on until 25th August 2021 The series of work by stained glass artist Rachel Mulligan was inspired by the old fortune-telling rhyme Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man or thief?
During Lockdown Rachel was reminded of two sketches she had made almost 20 years ago of stained glass panels illustrating Tailor and Soldier. She posted the sketches on Instagram and discovered they were made in the 1930s by Charles Paine and Daisy Luther and that panels illustrating Tinker and Sailor also existed. While sketching them Rachel began thinking about how the theme could be retold with a contemporary twist to reflect the tremendous effort of the community during the Covid crisis. From the building of the Nightingale hospitals to the cleaners in care homes, and from Thursday night clapping to supporting those people who suddenly had no income, the eight panels reflect daily life in 2020. Rachel is inspired by Medieval art and storytelling. Her work is usually very detailed but in these panels she was emulating the pared back, graphic style of the 1930’s originals. During the summer she travelled to Lamberts in Germany so she could select the right mouth-blown glass for the project. The glass has been engraved, painted and stained. Having finished work on the stained glass Rachel then revisited her printmaking past and turned the designs into a series of linocuts, the first she has made in 25 years. Rachel is delighted to be showcasing the new work at the Stained Glass Museum in Ely. It is an inspiring place to visit with so many beautiful and historic panels housed in a stunning location. CITY OF ELY COUNCIL Update
CEMETERY OPEN DAY 29/05/2021 A warm and sunny bank holiday weekend made for a highly successful Open Day at Ely's historic cemetery in Beech Lane. Organised by the Friends of Ely Cemetery, the event on 29th May saw a variety of activities which had been arranged to highlight the 16-acre site's importance both in the city's past and present.
Two tours took visitors on a walk to explore monuments dating from the cemetery's opening in 1855 and in telling the 'stories behind the stones' the guide for the day City councillor Chris Phillips spoke not only about Ely's more influential families but also about the lives of ordinary men and women who had lived in the town a century or more ago. Those on the walks were also able to see how customs associated with burials had changed over the years and to examine many gravestones which had recently come to light after being cleared away from part of the cemetery and buried many years ago. Visitors learned that these surprisingly wellpreserved stones were being re-incorporated into the cemetery's layout as an important historical record. For children visiting the cemetery there was an exciting Nature Trail which gave them the chance not only to win prizes but also to discover that a wide variety of birds, insects and small mammals had made the cemetery their home. Anna Bailey was at the forefront of the County’s work on social services, while Lis Every served as vice-chairman and was a great influence in the education and children in care and care leavers agenda of the council. Full council meetings of the City Council receive reports from our County and District councillors and both Anna Bailey and Lis Every were meticulous in keeping us fully informed. Ely will now be represented by Cllr Piers Coutts for Ely South and our City Council colleague Cllr Alison Whelan for Ely North and we wish them both fulfilling terms of office and look forward to continue to work together for the benefit of the parish. Sadly, Cllr Edward Carllson-Browne had to resign from the City Council on taking a new job in Northampton. Ed was a conscientious councillor and we wish him well while welcoming new Councillor Virginie Gavinet who was elected to represent the North Ward. An Ely family has set up a new mobile bar business and is hoping that lockdown restrictions will be eased in time for people to enjoy a summer of parties, with gin and prosecco (and a range of other drinks) served from a converted horse box bar. Founder Alison O'Connor came up with the idea last summer, after her freelance PR work dried up during the first lockdown. She explains: "We were all in full lockdown and couldn't socialise. I don’t like gin. My husband is allergic to horses. So I thought it was the perfect time to set up a gin bar in a converted horse box!

Alison is also hoping that local communities might get together and arrange street parties, to reconnect and celebrate families, friends and freedom. Thank you to everyone who supported the NSPCC Plant Stall on Downham Road during May. I am pleased to tell you that we raised over £570 all of which goes to support the charity that works with families and children who have experienced abuse. I would also like to thank those, who are not known to the team, but who dropped off plants for us to sell on the stall. Breaks for carers in East Cambridgeshire Do you, or someone you know, look after a family member or friend in East Cambridgeshire? We know that carers do an amazing job and that looking after someone can be really rewarding but it can also be really hard at times, especially without a break. We have launched a new project which can provide free short breaks to carers through the support of volunteers. Short break volunteers can provide company for the person being looked after so that carers can take a break and do something they enjoy – such as going for a walk with a friend, going to the hairdressers, an exercise class or doing something else at home such as gardening or spending time with other family members. A Colourful Celebration! Ely City WI celebrated in true Women's Institute style recently with a tremendous yarnbomb! It was to mark the Isle of Ely Federation of Womens Institutes 100th anniversary. Between Tuesday 8th June and Friday 18th June 2021, colourful installations were presented by Ely City WI on Palace Green and St Mary's Green in Ely to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Isle of Ely Federation of Womens Institutes. Our 17 strong yarnbombing team started working on the project back in March 2021. We had our newest member of one month to our longest serving members of over 30 years contribute. We had one member who learnt to loom knit during the run up to installation so she could contribute. We encouraged members who could not knit to make pom pom and tassle garlands so they could join in; we encouraged those who were able to knit to produce scarf lengths, and soon further ideas were brought to the table. In the end, our members knitted over 125 feet of knitted lengths, spiral garlands, giant daisies, knitted bacon and eggs, yarn flowers, knitted bunting and banners, pom poms and tassle garlands, a cannon ball, fish, jellyfish, bees, hearts. We had zoom yarn and yarns (knit and natters), we emailed regularly, we shared photos of what we had created to inspire each other -everything WI is about. We didn’t rely on a theme, instead, we all contributed according to our strengths, creative discussions were had. This all resulted in us generating a combination of different displays and installations that added interest and provided impact to both sites.

We got to know each other through a communal love of knitting, the project brought us together despite lockdown and the continuing pandemic. The positivity of the project was amazing. Our members really enjoyed putting the project together and we have received some fantastic comments on social media and it has brought many smiles to our faces when we have seen visitors and residents viewing and photographing the installations. Thank you to City of Ely Council, East Cambs District Council, Ely Cathedral, King’s School Ely, and Cambridgeshire Highways for their permissions to allow us to yarnbomb Palace Green and St Mary’s Green. GPs in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough played a key role in finding ways to treat people with COVID-19 and other conditions over last year, data from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) show. Research staff at GP practices across the East of England ran 38 studies from 1st April 2020 to 31st March 2021, resulting in the enrolment of 22,812 volunteers taking part in clinical trials. GP teams are instrumental in delivering research into many conditions every year, including diabetes, stroke and heart disease, but last year saw their focus widen to helping find treatments for COVID-19. This led to a ground-breaking discovery that a commonly-used, inexpensive asthma drug may shorten the recovery time for people over the age of 50 with early COVID-19 symptoms. Results from the PRINCIPLE (Platform Randomised trial of INvestigations against COVID-19 In older PeopLE), funded by the NIHR, showed that people aged 50 or over with early or mild COVID-19 symptoms who inhaled budesonide twice a day, for two weeks, had a shortened recovery time by an average of three days. 36 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
East Cambs District Council’s Planning Committee have granted outline planning permission for the redevelopment of the Princess of Wales Hospital in Ely. This is a long awaited and hard fought for milestone in this project which the residents of East Cambridgeshire need and deserve. I want to thank Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust for the incredibly comprehensive planning application and consultation process – delivered in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, I take my hat off to them for what they did and how they did it Cambridgeshire has recently been granted Integrated Care System status. This is incredibly important to the future of our health and care system as we work to support an ageing and growing population where people are living longer with more complex and multiple needs. We need to fully integrate health and social care, which will work at its best if it is locally understood, locally based and locally run.
Our local Primary Care Network is full of people who get this and are passionate about it and up for it. The vision for our new Hospital for East Cambs is for a modern hub - all existing services retained, comprehensive GP and pharmacy services, new diagnostic services, additional day surgeries and a new full Local Urgent Care Service with all that that means - standard opening times with on-site back up diagnostics.

Throughout August and September you are invited to explore the beauty of Cambridge, while supporting the work of two local charities, by taking part in a novel alternative to the traditional Bridge the Gap Walk. The family-friendly fundraiser can be completed in one day, or over several days, between Friday 13th August and Friday 10th September, raising funds for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity and Romsey Mill. This year, the Bridge the Gap committee have created another fantastic walk, showcasing wellknown and loved parts of the City as well as some fresh perspectives. The carefully crafted route, which covers a distance of about 5 miles, will be self-guided and can be completed at participants’ own pace and convenience, over a time period and day of their own choosing. The event is open for registrations at the great value of £8 per person, with those under 16 able to take part for free. The fee covers the event

ELY WILDSPACE UNDER THREAT The past 18 months have demonstrated how lucky we are to have Ely Wildspace on our doorstep. You might not have realised when strolling out on the circular walk along the river through the water meadow, up past the pits with the kingfishers and back through woodland that you are enjoying a nationally important protected area with significant parts designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Animals and flora of conservation importance range from the Bittern to a rare hoverfly Myolepta dubia, and the Green-winged orchid. Recently, you might have heard the song of a lone male Nightingale singing for a mate. These pockets of habitat through the landscape are growing in significance as our climate changes – and as pressures increase from development and land conversion to other uses. Our wildlife crucially needs these sites now, and to survive into the future. Anything we can do as a community to enhance and extend natural habitat will benefit not only wildlife but also our own physical and mental wellbeing. This precious area is now under threat of development once more, from Network Rail plans to close the Kiln Lane level crossing and to put 40 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

ARTIST: KRISTIN BAILEY
Kristin Bailey has been painting for some 25 years for herself, friends family and the occasional commission, but she had never been in the right place to make it any kind of career. Well, lockdown has changed that!
Like many people with underlying health conditions she found herself shielding at home with her 2 young boys through 2020 and this gave her the impetuous she needed to dive into her sketching and painting. What started as a need for some peaceful 'head space' developed into a very creative and prolific time as an artist for Kristin. Kristin's striking and original designs translate very effectively into a beautiful range of bespoke items which are available, made to order printed with her artwork. The range can be found on her newly launched website: https://notestotreasure.com/ She comments, "I was so grateful to have one of my Mixed Media paintings accepted in the Institute for East Anglian Artist Annual Exhibition 2021 and to receive the President’s Commendation for my piece entitled ‘Emmanuel II'.
This was a wonderful foundation for my new career as an artist. I have also been collaborating with a group of artists organised by Artemix, a London based group which promotes cross discipline collaborations" Kristin continues, "Because I have a strong faith in God, I use my painting as a time to worship using colour. My church, The Lighthouse Church in Lynn Road, even allow me to bring my paints & paper to paint during the worship & service on a Sunday morning!"

Helena Greene was an artist that loved the fresh and new, finding ways to constantly reinvent the landscapes and vistas that she experienced. From her early days in the 1970s studying art at Goldsmiths London, where she concentrated on installation art, to her work with textiles and silk printing, through mixed media collages to the fertile final years of her life when she became fascinated by film - her art was constantly evolving. 42 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Her work draws on the verdant East Anglian countryside where she grew up, the south coast where she holidayed as a child, stretching to the many corners of the globe that she explored including Pakistan, India, Mexico and Australia. She lived most of her adult life in Cambridge, inspired by the city's streets, her home and much loved garden there. This is a fitting retrospective of an artist who lived her art and saw art in everything she lived. CAMBRIDGE OPEN STUDIOS IS BACK The region’s largest art event is back this July. Cambridge Open Studios is set to return this July for its month-long summer art event, featuring an exciting range of exhibitions by over 300 artists at a selection of locations in the city and surrounding villages. The weekends are: July 3/4, 10/11, 17/18 and 24/25. Studios are open to visit between 11am and 6pm except those opting to take visitors via appointment. The distinctive yellow COS flags will be out to identify participating studios and visitors are guaranteed a warm welcome. For many artists it will be Open Studios as usual with exhibitors opening their doors to the public. Some artists have chosen to ‘open by appointment’ and a few have opted to participate with ‘open windows’. Cambridge Open Studios are delighted to be partnering with The Pitt Building. The Wild World Heroes, 2021 Summer Reading Challenge will officially begin on Monday 19th July, however, children can sign up at their local Cambridgeshire library from Saturday 10th July. Children can read whatever they like - fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library. There are 6 special stickers to collect, one for each week of the Summer Holidays, and everyone who finishes the Challenge will receive a certificate, and (for children over 3) a Gold Medal. BABYLON CINEMA AT THE MALTINGS
Babylon Cinema at The Maltings reopened and welcomed back the public on 20th May. The cinema, which had been closed to the public since March 2020 due to Covid-19, reopened with enhanced safety and hygiene procedures in place for a safe and enjoyable movie-going experience. Babylon ARTS’ chief executive, Claire Somerville said, “After the long lockdown, we were so excited to welcome back audiences and to give them a chance to escape into film and for that big screen, communal experience that’s so magical about cinema. It’s been quite a journey for everyone and as part of the re-launch we’ve worked with Peterborough Films to produce a cinematic film trailer for our cinema, which we think captures the build-up of excitement we’re feeling about having the doors open again. This is on our YouTube Channel and website.”

Cruse Bereavement Care Cruse Bereavement Care is a charity that has been providing bereavement support to people across the UK for over 60 years, predominately through face-to-face and group sessions. Due to the current situation around Covid-19, Cruse have taken the decision to move all of support to telephone, until it is safe to return to normal working practices. As well as telephone support, there is also helpful information on the Cruse
