f there’s anything I’ve learned in my three seasons as editor of Southern New England Weddings, it’s that there are no rules when it comes to weddings. Whether you dream of tying the knot in an industrial loft or are dying to have living art statues perform at your reception (see page 288), the sky is the limit. While this can make you feel a little overwhelmed, don’t worry, you’re in the right place. The following pages are filled with inspiration—from design details to venue locales—that are sure to inspire you. This year, we focused on bringing you more design inspiration, including stunning styled editorials beginning on page 101. One of my favorite styled editorials this year (and perhaps of all time) features the most adorable models: puppies in need of adoption (see page 129). I was particularly moved by this photo shoot, which was designed by Jessica Hennessey Weddings, as I adopted my own four-legged fur baby, Hank, last April and have become a huge proponent of “Adopt, don’t shop.”

Annie’s Escapes plans custom vacations as unique as you are.

In an age of online travel planning, many travel agents have fallen by the wayside. But for seasoned honeymoon travel expert Ann Petronio, of Annie’s Escapes (anniesescapes.com), business is booming … and for good reason. When Petronio meets with couples, she takes the time to discover what makes them tick, curating once-in-a-lifetime trips that suit their distinct personalities. .

“No two couples are alike,” says Petronio. “They (couples) have shared interests, tastes, likes and dislikes that are as unique to them. So why should they settle for a cookie-cutter honeymoon?”

Sometimes couples come to Petronio with a specific destination in mind, but often they come with a general “wish list.” That was the case for couple Ashley and Ryan, who came to Petronio for a honeymoon that included the beach, wine, adventure, exploration and multiple stops within one trip. With this in mind, Petronio steered the couple to South Africa, where their itinerary included a stop in Cape Town, hiking Table Mountain, wine tasting in Stellenbosch and a safari in Kruger National Park.

“When we met with Ann we had a couple locations in mind, but she asked questions that made us focus on the experience and what kind of trip we wanted to have,” says Ashley. “Ann was fantastic, very attentive, and she personalized the itinerary to fit exactly what we wanted. She even answered our questions during our trip! It was the best experience we could have hoped for and the perfect trip to begin our marriage.”

While Petronio books her fair share of high-end vacations such as this one, she does not shy away from planning honeymoons for budget-conscious couples.

Colombia

Rose and Ian, an outdoorsy and adventurous couple from Colorado, came to their initial consultation with a wish list that included hiking, surfing and national parks.

“They needed to do all this within a pretty modest budget,” says Petronio. “What I came up with was Colombia, with stops that included Tayrona National Park, Cartagena for culture, history and food, and a side trip to the El Rosario Islands.”

“Our trip to Colombia was truly amazing,” says Rose. “It was exactly what we hoped for: a perfect combination of outdoor activities. Our little hotel in Tayrona had a jungle and an ocean view and we could pick mangoes on the way to the beach. Our hotel in Cartagena had the most gorgeous view of the square and the Old City. Ann really hit the jackpot with these hotels.”

In addition to her vast knowledge of many areas of the world and what they have to offer, Petronio also has relationships with local ground operators that the average traveler doesn’t have access to. And that can make for a much more personalized (and safer) experience—especially when couples are traveling far from home.

“I can also help couples come up with cool stuff to see and do that they may not think of,” she says. “But the true secret sauce of our success as a travel company is that we really take the time to listen and consult. And we pride ourselves on making each honeymoon as unique as our clients.”

Imagine the luxury of a beachside resort with all the amenities, combined with the intimacy and personal service of a much smaller venue. We know, it sounds too good to be true—but it’s exactly what you’ll find at Salamander Resorts’ Hammock Beach in picturesque Palm Coast, Florida.

First things first: If you dream of a destination wedding that’s not too far from home—allowing convenience for you in the planning process and for more of your guests to R.S.V.P. “Yes”—the location checks all of the boxes and then some. Want to stay for your honeymoon? The resort will give you a discount on your stay (“But we’re not the loungingby-the-pool type.” Trust us, there are a million things to do on site and in the area—plus, Disney is only an hour and a half away!).

Situated on a postcard-worthy stretch of white sand on the Atlantic Coast, Hammock Beach offers all of the activities and services for a carefree visit: spacious villas and suites ranging from 700-2,350 square feet, pools and a water pavilion with a slide and a lazy river, a putting green, two golf courses, a spa and salon, and a range of dining options including the Atlantic Grille, an award-winning shore-to-table restaurant that also hosts small events like rehearsal dinners (think freshcaught shrimp cocktail and oysters on the half shell for starters). Note: although there is no private dining room at the Atlantic, a section of the restaurant can be enclosed with sliding barn doors for events. When it comes to weddings at the resort, the possibilities are endless and limited only by your wildest dreams as bride-and-groom-to-be. Choose from four outdoor and six indoor venues with a range of views, styles and sizes—the smallest accommodating up to 100 guests, and the largest, 500—such as the Grand Event Lawn, a circular lawn surrounded by beautiful landscaping; the Lodge Lawn, Pool Deck and Tent, a beachfront tent draped in white chiffon with a backdrop of palm trees and the ocean; and the Atlantic Ballroom, a romantic, high-ceilinged ballroom with wrought iron chandeliers perfect for intimate formal events.

Love the location, but not a seaside-wedding kind of couple? Hammock’s off-site “bonus” venue, The Conservatory, is a stunning alternative. Located on the resort’s second golf course, The Conservatory club offers an old-fashioned clubhouse feel with a multitude of spaces for photo ops and first looks. An outdoor ceremony can be situated on the lawn for a sunset background during your “I do’s,” while indoors, floor-to-ceiling windows and a glass-ceilinged atrium provide plenty of natural lighting for a bright, elegant atmosphere.

Despite the delicious food, picture-perfect location and amazing lineup of event spaces, what we love most about Hammock Beach is none of the above—as cliché as it may sound, it’s the people that really make this place come to life and stand out among other venues. While enjoying an outdoor brunch one day during our visit, a photographer who frequently works events at the resort mentioned that the staff is the reason he keeps coming back; other resorts can feel ostentatious or uninviting, but Hammock manages to blend its sophistication with a friendly, welcoming environment created by the people who work there. It goes without saying that this is a staff you can trust with the details of your big day—even when planning it from 1,000plus miles away in New England.

INVITATION SUITE Anatomy

Wondering what to include in your wedding invitation suite? Thinking of cutting back and skipping the suite altogether? We hear you. Designing, packaging and sending your wedding invitations can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be, especially if you enlist the help of a stationery pro. Remember: your invitation suite sets the tone for your big day and, most importantly, shares all the essential information your guests need to prep for your celebration. Cape Cod-based event planner and stationery expert Jennifer Chagnon of The Pink Polka Dot (thepinkpolkadot.net) shares her guide on exactly what to send with wedding invitations.

Wedding Invitation 1.

This piece provides the details of the wedding ceremony. Wording will vary based on who is hosting the event or doing the inviting (parents of the bride, the couple, both sets of parents, etc.). If your ceremony and reception are at the same location, a line is added at the bottom to indicate the reception will follow.

Reception Card 2.

If your reception is at a different location from the ceremony, you will need to include a reception card that indicates the location and time of the reception.

Weekend Details Card 3.

These are often included if there are additional events you’d like to invite guests to (welcome cocktails, after-party, post-wedding brunch, etc.). It’s also a good place to include your wedding website. Websites are great tools for communicating accommodations, things to do in the area, and other information that you wouldn’t want to put in the invitation. This extra card could also be used as an accommodations card if you are not creating a wedding website. Directions are sometimes included, although we do not see this as much since everyone has GPS on their phones!

Rehearsal Dinner Card

A rehearsal dinner insert is sometimes included in suites to guests that are invited to the rehearsal dinner, although this is most commonly a separate insert.

Response Card 5.

Most stationers will advise against email RSVPs as many guests will forget to do so. Chagnon suggests turning off the online RSVP option on your wedding website altogether. Instead, include a reply card that has a place for the guest(s) names, a meal choice selection if needed, as well as the date by which you would like the cards mailed back. Add verbiage for guests to indicate dietary restrictions. If you are doing welcome bags at hotels or offering transportation, you can even include a line for guests to indicate where they are staying. Another common addition is for guests to RSVP for other events, such as welcome cocktails or a brunch. It’s so much easier to get all the information you need at one time!

Response Envelope 6.

This is included with each suite and will have your address pre-printed on the front (or your parents’ address, if they are the hosts). It’s proper etiquette to pre-stamp these envelopes for your guests.

Invitation Envelopes

Your invitation will either have single or double envelopes (inner and outer), depending on the style you choose and formality. Pocket invitation suites do not have inner envelopes. You may choose to add an envelope liner to your suite.

Belly

Band or Seal

There are many options for embellishing your invitation; belly bands wrap around the entire pocket or suite and can be made of paper, twine or ribbon. Paper versions can be custom printed in any design. Seals for pockets can be made of paper or wax. Wax seals are also available for your envelopes.

9.

Coordinating Paper Products

While there are endless options and products, the most common items to complement our wedding suite include escort cards.

Save the Dates

While they don’t have to match exactly, it’s always nice to start the “branding” of your wedding with the first piece of mail!

Thank You Notes

Finally, don’t forget to order your thank-you notes to coordinate. They can also include a photo from your big day!

Chagnon’s Tips for a Flawless Invitation Suite

Weddings can range from a formal, black tie affair to a backyard casual soiree, and it’s important that your guests understand what type of event to expect. You don’t want them showing up to your backyard, casual event in heels and formal gowns! Before getting focused on the wording and details, you’ll want to select a design that reflects your style and vibe. Working with an invitation professional includes the added benefit of an expert who can walk you through proper etiquette, wording, and offer helpful suggestions throughout the process.

THINK PRESENTATION

If you are having a destination wedding with multiple events, you may want to choose a pocket-style invitation or suite with a belly band. These styles will keep everything together neatly so nothing is lost. If you only need to include the wedding invitation and response card, a pocket style is not the best choice, as it will look empty when your guests mail back the response card.

PICK YOUR PAPER

There are hundreds of different paper options and print processes (digital or flat print, thermography, engraving, letterpress and foil). Each has pros and cons. Pricing will also vary. By working with a local stationer, you will be able to see and feel the options available to you. They can also explain the differences and help select the option that’s best for you and your design.

BE COHESIVE

Think your stationery through. It’s important to keep everything cohesive so guests notice the details you’ve worked so hard on! Carry elements from your invitation design through to your wedding day. It doesn’t have to be exactly the same, but you want some elements to remain—whether it’s a custom monogram or logo, or even just the same fonts and paper colors. Your guests will notice the extra effort!

Shopping for your bridal gown is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one that can be overwhelming for any bride. We asked Stacey Kraft, owner of Flair Boston (flairbridesmaid.com), to share some helpful tips to brides searching for their dream dress and the hot trend you need to know about this year.

Do Your Homework

While you may not have picked out your dream dress, it’s important to have some sort of vision for what style you’re looking for. There are a number of factors to consider before purchasing a dress: budget, your body type and the formality of your event. Will your nuptials be a black-tie affair or a bash on the beach? Kraft suggests bringing a Pinterest board or inspiration book to your bridal appointment so your stylist can present gowns based on what you show her. Be open to new styles, Kraft advises. While you ultimately know what you’ll be comfortable in, your stylist may be able to show you some alternative styles that you wouldn’t ordinarily try on that look amazing.

Perfect Timing

Most stores are by appointment so that bridal consultants can give you their undivided attention. But shopping on the right day can also make a difference, especially if you're visiting a store that’s swarming with brides. While Saturdays are a convenient time to shop for most, a busy shop can make things overwhelming and actually make your appointment feel more rushed. Consider shopping on a weekday when it’s quiet.

Budget Wisely

Simply put, don't waste your (or your stylist’s) time trying on dresses that are beyond your budget. Trust us, you’ll be frustrated when you can’t say "Yes" to that out-of-your-price-range dress you absolutely love. It’s also important to factor in your fashion additions, including alterations, veil and undergarments, which can quickly tally up the overall total.

Entourage Etiquette

Having a second opinion is helpful, but too many opinions can leave you with clouded judgment. Choose only a few family members or friends to join you at your appointment and consult a professional for their opinion. Above all, trust your instincts when it comes to choosing your dress—it's your wedding, after all!

Choose Comfort Before Fashion

Remember that you’ll be wearing your dress for upwards of eight to 10 hours. If you’re a girl that values clothing comfort, we advise choosing a dress (and undergarments) that are going to keep you cozy all day long. Consider what feels best on your body— can you handle something form-fitting and possibly restricting all day?—as well as the season your wedding is taking place when choosing fabrics and styles (a heavily embellished sleeved ballgown works great for a winter wedding, but will leave you uncomfortably warm in mid-summer).

Two Dresses are Better Than One

Some dresses just aren’t meant for dancing and sometimes having two dresses makes sense. If you’re yearning for a Cinderella moment during your ceremony, but want something simpler for your reception, try a two-in-one dress and opt for a gown with a detachable skirt. “Many of our designers are offering two looks for the price of one,” says Kraft. “This is a great way to have two looks while not having to completely change your look or your outfit.”

Perfect Fit

Many brides diet before their weddings, but don't buy a dress that’s a size or two too small in the hopes you'll lose that extra 15 pounds. Buy a dress that fits you now. It’s much easier and less stressful to have your gown altered to a smaller size than having it let out or trying to squeeze into it on your big day!

Draping has the ability to completely customize and transform your space, whether you’re suspending fabric and chandeliers from the ceiling or creating a wow-worthy entryway. With her design eye and expertise, Monica Flynn of Drape Art Designs (drapeartdesigns.com) can turn any space into a dream space. We asked Flynn to share her tips for couples considering custom drapery for their events and also some of her favorite designs to date.

BUDGET FIRST

If you’ve just started the hunt for your perfect venue, or you’re struggling to find one that really matches your style, consider reworking your budget to incorporate draping and lighting. Rather than choose a venue with a lofty price tag that cuts into your budget, rent one that’s less expensive and put those extra dollars towards the details. That way you can really personalize your venue and make it your own, explains Flynn.

PINPOINT YOUR STYLE

Couples often have a hard time articulating the specific look or feel they want. While some may prefer to feel wrapped in an intimate atmosphere, other couples may be aiming for a light and airy aesthetic. “By getting to know each client’s unique personality,” Flynn says, “I can nail down their ultimate vision and guide them through the process of selecting the décor elements that will bring it to life.”

CHOOSE DRAPING AND LIGHTING

It’s important your choices reflect who you are as a couple. “Playing with color and texture adds dramatic impact,” Flynn explains. If you’re aiming for a whimsical effect, run ribbons beneath tent swags or mix rosette satin with sheer fabric across the ceiling to add depth and movement to your design. Installing bistro lights above a clear-top tent with twinkle lights and star pendants filling the interior can create the illusion of a 3D nighttime sky. “For a bohemian-style wedding, I filled a tent with three layers of lighting: twinkle lights, exposed vintage bulbs and basket lamps, all under a canopy of garlands,” says Flynn. Whether timeless or avant-garde, the perfect draping and lighting can create your dream space.

Rehearsal Dinner Reboot

Traditionally, rehearsal dinners have taken a significant back seat to weddings. But that’s changing, as couples are putting more time and resources into ensuring that the night before their wedding is filled with love, laughter and special moments that set the tone for the entire weekend.

When Susie Wilson planned her daughter Lillian’s wedding weekend in Westerly, Rhode Island, in June 2017, she made sure not to overlook the rehearsal dinner. With the help of Sarah True of True Event (trueevent.com), Wilson threw her daughter and soon-to-be son-in-law a festive, tented lobster boil on the beach. And while Wilson calls the wedding “magical,” she says the rehearsal dinner was her favorite part of the weekend.

Rehearsal dinners have historically been an afterthought in wedding celebrations, reserved as an obligatory get-together preluding a couple’s big day. But over the past several years, there has been a major uptick in large-scale pre-ceremony festivities,

with couples embracing the rehearsal dinner as an extension of their big day and a chance to further celebrate with friends and family.

“This is especially true for destination weddings,” says True. “This takes off some of the stress and pressure for the bride and groom, since they are able to spend quality time with guests before the wedding day.”

True says that food is often a focus at rehearsal dinners, since couples can have “more fun” with meal options than they usually would at a wedding. “We’re seeing less and less formal, sit-down, plated dinners and more stations and theme food at rehearsal dinners,” True says. “We’ve had a tailgate theme with game-day fare, a New England clam bake … and seasonal foods, like soups and other harvest foods in the fall and winter, and lighter fare like grilled kebabs and veggies and fruit for spring celebrations.”

While the wedding is, of course, for celebrating, True says the rehearsal dinner is viewed as an intimate night with everyone getting to know each other and toasts. “There were tears, laughter, and props, and people from the groom’s side got to learn more about the bride, and those from the bride’s side got to hear stories about the groom,” True says about Wilson’s beach bash.

True says that more couples are including people beyond immediate family members and the wedding party in their rehearsal dinner celebrations–especially for destination weddings. The reasoning is two-fold: It’s a way for couples to thank guests for traveling and also to settle in, and also an opportunity for guests to get to know one another before the main event. At Wilson’s event, for example, guests were intentionally assigned at tables with others who they did not know to encourage mingling.

True adds that couples are pulling out the stops to capture the moments at their rehearsal dinner, usually hiring a photographer and a videographer to supplement their big day. “[The rehearsal dinner is] when most of the toasts are going to happen,” says True, “so it’s equally important–if not more so–to capture those moments.”

What You Need to Know to Host Your Wedding Outdoors

Whether you dream of hosting a 500-person soirée on the oceanfront or an intimate gathering in your family’s backyard, a tent is the perfect way to shelter your guests at an outdoor wedding. Unlike a traditional indoor event space, such as a hotel ballroom or country club, a tent provides a blank canvas to create an imaginative and one-of-a-kind design. But, like any other venue, when it comes to planning a tented wedding, details matter and booking well in advance is key. We asked the experts at Sperry Tents (sperrytents.com) and Newport Tent Company (newporttents.com) to share some helpful information for couples to consider before pitching a tent and hosting an al fresco affair.

CONSIDER THE SITE

“When planning a tented wedding reception at a venue, ask if there are any restrictions on staking,” advises Jen Sperry, marketing director at Sperry Tents. “Find out if the venue has enough resources nearby, dependable power for the tent lighting, and can fulfill your vendor and catering needs.” Beyond that, is the site actually accessible and is it safe? Is the ground stable enough to hold a tent? The necessity for a permit varies from town to town, but it’s a good idea to check in advance with your town hall to find out if any safety or fire inspections are needed.

CHOOSE YOUR TENT TYPE

“Your tent is your venue, and its style plays a huge role in the look and feel of your wedding, particularly in photographs and video,” says Sperry. Most companies offer site surveys to review the placement and size of the tent. “If you’re thinking of inviting between 50 and 100 guests, plan a size that accommodates 100,” advises Jen Pinheiro, sales and marketing director at Newport Tent Company. It’s important to consider the other elements that will go into your design and what else you’ll need to fit beneath your tent (catering stations and bar, the DJ or band, dance floor, dining tables, etc.). Another important aspect to consider is flooring. Is the venue site relatively flat or is it unlevel and pose a threat to guests’ safety? Adding a floor not only enhances the safety of your venue, but will make the overall design more elegant and polished.

LIGHT IT UP

Lighting can instantly change the mood inside your tent as the sunlight dwindles. “We use dimmers as a standard to ensure our lighting is always adjustable,” says Sperry. “Group a unique set of lights over a dance floor or opt for colored uplights around the tent’s perimeter to create a club-like feel once the music starts. And don’t forget lighting for outside the tent: walkway lanterns, uplighting on trees or strings of bistro lighting, all of which add to the magical feel of an outdoor wedding reception.”

From fragrant floral installations and romantic drapery, to ornate light fixtures and colorblocked dancefloors, there are endless possibilities when it comes to outfitting your tent with décor.

Wedding planner Brianna Cancel shares how she made her own dream wedding come true.

On a clear summer day this past July, event planner Brianna Tutalo of Queen Bee Events (qnbeeevents.com) stepped onto to the lawn at Rosecliff mansion. Throughout her career, she has attended countless events at beautiful venues, ensuring that each detail is executed as promised. This time, though, she tried to let go and enjoy the day she’d planned. This time, it was her turn to say “I do” to the love of her life, Christopher Cancel.

Now Brianna Cancel, she says her big day was fun and stressfree—despite being the sole planner of the event. For her business, which she started last fall, Cancel is used to planning exquisite events without the help of a team or even an assistant. Whether for clients or her own wedding, she manages to bring her visions to life. “I jump through hoops for anyone,” she says of her work. “I just try to make everything happen and try to build relationships with anyone I’m working with.”

When it came to her and Chris’s wedding, she says that being both the bride and planner had its benefits. Unlike brides navigating the wedding industry for the first time, Cancel knew her wedding vendors and what they were capable of executing. After discussing her vision—a romantic, elegant event with an allwhite theme—with Semia Dunne of Flowers by Semia, she says, “It was amazing to see how she interpreted what I’d requested.” On either side of the aisle of their outdoor ceremony, bursts of white roses and baby’s-breath created an elegant, dreamlike setting, leading to a billowing white canopy and chandelier where the bride and groom said their vows. “I wanted something romantic,” she says. “I wanted people to think ‘elegance’ when they walked in.”

Unique for the bride was the opportunity to show friends and family—and of course, her husband—her passion and talent. After witnessing her “tears and stress” for the previous year and a half of planning, Cancel says, “It was really special to see Chris and his look on everything [I’d planned]. It was cool to have him see it come to life.”

Based on her experience, Cancel has a few tips for brides in the midst of planning:

Don’t: Let others steer your planning.

“One thing I’d promised myself was that I wasn’t going to allow anyone else to tell me who to invite and what I should do. Follow your heart because it’s your day.”

Do: Consider your guests.

“[At our wedding] if you liked cigars, we had a cigar bar. If people liked whiskey, we had a bunch of whiskeys available. We even had an ice cream bar. Think of what your guests like and try to incorporate that.”

Do: Get organized (and get a planner!)

“Organization is definitely key with this stuff. Many brides don’t realize they need a wedding planner until they’re too far into it and don’t have a budget for it. I’m willing to work with people budget-wise to help with whatever they need.”

SIMPLE TABLE SETTING WITH A LITTLE EXTRA Budget: $-$$

A fun touch for conservative budgets: incorporating dinner right into the table settings. To save on menu cards, we printed reception menus on paper bags of bread for each guest; beneath each plate, a linen napkin doubles as a “placemat.” Guests are greeted with a glass of wine, bread and olive oil to begin their buffet dinner with a family-style salad. Pink, peach and burgundy flowers and décor add pops of color to the white chairs and table tops, and bud vases can be moved from cocktail hour to guests’ tables to save on event florals.

THE IDEAL MIX OF TEXTURE AND COLOR Budget: $$-$$$

We take the simple table setting up a notch with pin tuck table linens for texture, upgraded flatware and glassware, and fruitwood chiavari chairs for contrast. For this bride, we added a champagne toast to greet guests as they arrive to a sit-down dinner. Boxed garden centerpieces (just think: they could also line your wedding aisle), rustic wood table numbers and fun napkin folds keep this design feeling casual, yet complete. Want even more color? We went with floral cabinet pulls for favors to allow guests to bring a bit of your big day home.

GARDEN WEDDING GONE WILD

Our Cape Cod garden wedding hits new heights with tall, lush centerpieces and deep cranberry candlesticks. We traded the linens for handmade whitewashed wood tables to stay true to the rustic style, but paired them with high end ghost-back chairs for a clean look. Guests of this lavish plated dinner are greeted by geometric table numbers, place cards and monogrammed napkins for them to take home. A signature cocktail gives a nod to local Cape Cod fare and the color palette of the wedding. We didn’t forget about those bud vases from cocktail hour— we added those to the tablescape, too, for a more dynamic look.

With the Madison Beach Hotel's oceanic setting as the backdrop, Rachel Lynn of Daylynn Designs created a design that paid homage to both the east and west coasts. "I envisioned a Palm Springs meets the Connecticut coast design," she says. Lynn incorporated a palette of seafoam blue and light pink tones by way of tabletop linens and florals designed by Katie Murphy of Bloom52 Floral Co. Murphy was also inspired by the east-coast-meets-west coast theme and added sea urchins (coastal) and air plants (desert) to make the design come full circle. The use of exotic flowers paired with dried elements created an effortless interest that Tiahna Lynn Photography captured during the rosiest of golden hours. Riddy Hossier of Ridgely Calligraphy used handmade peach paper and striking white calligraphy to create place cards and menus, casting another layer of color and texture. Rose gold chargers and flatware from PEAK Event Services, as well as delicious rose gold macarons by Sugar Therapy, added a touch of metallic whimsy to the tabletop.

Inspired by Party Rental Ltd.’s “Blue Etoile” linen, Colby Radomski of Southern New England Weddings designed this timeless and feminine tablescape. Mirbeau Inn & Spa’s serene Monet-inspired water gardens provided the perfect setting for this styled setup, which featured an airy, white and light blue color scheme. Radomski mixed in gilded accents by way of brass candlesticks, gold embossed dinnerware and romantic gold dining chairs. Custom handmade paper menu cards by Modern Vintage Design Studio featured a floral design, calligraphy and gold foil. Three floral soaring centerpieces by Consider the Lilies were the stars of the tablescape, and featured white lilies and roses, nigella, delphinium and eucalyptus. To further enhance the French feel, Mirbeau’s talented pastry chef hand-painted macarons, which were served beneath bell domes brushed with calligraphy, as well as a macaron tower and single-tier buttercream wedding cake stamped with a blue and white appliqué.

A WALK IN THE WOODS

There is something so mysterious, mellow and whimsical in hosting a wedding in the woods. Being one with nature and the beauty it already provides was the inspiration behind Cristen Faherty’s (Cristen & Co.) polished woodland bohemian tablescape. Mixing warmer color tones with softer neutrals, Faherty created a homey autumn color palette, using rustic elements like a farm table and carved wood candle centerpiece, as well as industrial accents like gunmetal bistro chairs from PEAK Event Services. Enhancing the bohemian feel, Faherty incorporated custom mustard colored suede napkins by BBJ Linen, tassel placemats and tri-fold Kraft paper menu cards by The Paper Perfectionist. Every element provided a cozy and cohesive feel, from the glamping farm retreat with acres of dreamy fields and lush forests, to the wood fired farm-to-table menu by Harvest Moon Catering.

Inspired by the lush gardens and romantic atmosphere of Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum, Candice Coppola and Diana Chouinard designed a colorful and whimsical styled editorial highlighting a color palette of vibrant jewel tones, and even featuring Pantone’s Color of the Year, “Living Coral.”

A farm table surrounded by lucite dining chairs provided a clean, smooth backdrop for billowing floral arrangements by Sayles Livingston Design, which featured vibrant blooms—including a variety of peonies, rananunculus, roses and greenery—in coral, blush and citrus hues, spilling onto the table. “Since flowers and natural elements played such a powerful role in enhancing our design, we wanted to be sure to showcase them in playful, yet modern ways,” says Chouinard.

A clean and modern invitation suite designed by Christa Alexandra Designs featured a small, lucite box engraved with text and packed with greenery. The showpiece of the editorial included a dramatic floral wall by Sayles Livingston Design that doubled as a perfect backdrop for the couple as well an escort card display. A playful cake covered in colorful hand-painted floral petals and buds by Christine Doucette of Dyane’s Sweet Tooth also stole the show.

For the fashion component, Beth Chapman, owner and lead stylist of Beth Chapman Styling and The White Dress by the Shore, dressed our “bride” in stunning gowns by Amy Kuschel, Jenny Yoo and Theia Couture, as well as a statement cape by Theia Couture.

Drawing inspiration from the industrial setting of Hope Events on Main and a color palette of berry hues, Erica Trombetti of Infinite Events designed this romantic and moody editorial, which we chose to feature on this issue’s fall/winter cover. Helping to bring Trombetti’s vision to life was a talented team of vendors, including Monica Flynn of Drape Art Designs, who created a dramatic canopy over a stylized tabletop, and Kristen Bender Daaboul of Kadeema, who curated a lavish lounge area featuring a blush velvet couch and berry colored velvet ottoman.

Using plenty of texture and seasonal foliage, The Local Bouquet’s Mary Kate Kinnane created a jawdropping ceremony arch. Entire branches of locally grown red maple tree served as the base of the structure, while limelight hydrangeas were added to create visual impact. Locally grown blush Cafe Au Lait dahlias (sourced from The Dahlia Shed in Middletown, Rhode Island) added a dreamy accent. A fun design approach was taken for the bridal bouquet: Kinnane created an ombré effect with jewel toned dahlias to create the oversized bouquet.

Inspired by the vibrant colors of citrus fruits, Pranzi Catering & Events created a playful styled editorial that evokes all the fruity feels. A half-moon shaped table dressed in Pranzi's Baracco Celery linen provided a base for an lush floral garland featuring verdant greenery and a variety of citrus slices, including Cara Cara oranges, blood oranges, kumquats, grapefruits, Meyer lemons, starfruit and Buddha’s hand. Peach garden roses, eucalyptus and bruina berry, ranunculus, spray roses, succulents, king protea, Italian ruscus and pepper berry were used throughout the lush floral arrangements, including a hanging floral chandelier. The Botanical Center’s own floral displays enhanced the tropical feel and provided ample photo ops for the bride.

WWith the concept of Industrial Bohemian at the forefront, each vendor involved with this styled shoot had the unique opportunity to contribute their most modern or organic talents—sometimes both. Rachel Lynn of Daylynn Designs recognized the unique possibilities if each vendor was able to showcase their talents from opposite ends of the style spectrum.

“I’ve always been inspired by the juxtapositions in design—you’ll hear me talk about that often—so when I was able to approach Winston Flowers, Frost Productions, True North Event Rentals and other vendors involved about the unique opportunity of pairing organic and modern elements with the industrial space at Artists for Humanity EpiCenter, I just knew the end result would be deep-rooted in the non-traditional." The overall design showcased pairings of man-made elements and natural materials that both perplex and please the eye in balanced ways. One striking example is the overflowing canopy of pampas grass and cotton that was suspended above the head table using industrial strength cables.

As a wedding planner and designer and lover of four-legged friends, Jessica Hennessey of Jessica Hennessey Weddings set out to create a multifaceted photoshoot featuring a bespoke holiday-themed design and the cutest of models—puppies from two local dog rescues in search of their forever homes. What better timing than the holidays?

The Christmas Tree Farm in Pembroke set the scene for a day filled with the delicious smell of pine trees, intricate wedding details and puppy kisses from the dogs at Survivor Tails Animal Rescue (STAR) and Brown Dog Coalition & Rescue. Capturing the day was Rachel Buckley Weddings and Lauren Dobish Photography—as Danielle from For The Love Of Paws got the

adoptable dogs camera-ready for their big debut! Behind the scenes, Beach Plum Floral & Event Design created the most beautiful bridal bouquet, floral hoops and collars, as well as a gracefully detailed floral runner across a Coast & Country Rentals farm table to complete a striking holiday tablescape. A cake by Delicious Desserts featuring a cable-knit design rounded out the details of this gorgeous day.

SEASIDE ALLURE

The inspiration for this styled photo shoot, designed by Cape Cod Celebrations in collaboration with Sperry Tents and Ryan Designs, was a love affair with coastal décor. “We wondered what would happen if we designed an outdoor wedding space using the type of furniture, fabrics, lighting and materials found in the cool, crisp coastal homes featured in our favorite glossy home magazines,” explain event designers and planners of Cape Cod Celebrations, Jamie Bohlin and Stephanie Diaz Eldredge. “We wanted a light and airy seaside feel, with glimmers of shimmery elegance.”

To achieve this look, the team curated a series of coastal-themed vignettes beneath tents provided by Sperry Tents: a lounge area on the beach, reception tent on the lawn, cocktail area under open bistros, and a dessert and espresso bar by The Chocolate Rose under an intricate sailcloth arch. A color palette indicative of the seaside surroundings featured a medley of cream, pale blue and light green hues. Seasonal florals and beachy décor, including nautical rope, driftwood, seaglass and coral, further enhanced the oceanic aesthetic.

For their beachside nuptials, Kelly Morrone and David Mazzariello wanted to keep every element of their day classic and elegant. An intimate wedding with 125 of their closest family and friends allowed the couple to genuinely connect with everyone in attendance. “We picked Madison Beach Hotel [as our venue] because it was really intimate, and we loved that it was a hotel as well as a function space so all our family and friends could stay there,” says Kelly.

The couple relied on Hamden, Connecticut-based Flowers From the Farm for their classic ivory arrangements. “The owner is a friend of my mom’s, so we were able to be really honest with her about what we did and didn’t want,” says David. Small vases of roses and calla lilies surrounded by candles perfectly executed the simple, classy look they both envisioned.

Black, white and gold flowers embellished their three-tier cake. After going through a series of cake tastings, which David admits was his favorite part of wedding planning, the couple decided on two different flavors—an almond cake with Nutella frosting and a lemon cake with vanilla buttercream from Guilford’s But a Dream Custom Cakes.

Kelly and David’s nearly two-year engagement allowed them to take their time planning each detail without feeling overwhelmed. Plus, they were able to secure the date they wanted: “The earlier you can pick a date, the better. We were shocked that pretty much every Saturday from May to October books up super early,” says David.

Nicole Pittera and Kristian Otten’s friendship, which developed into a lifelong love, began at their hometown church. “We’ve known each other since we were five and seven years old," Nicole says.

For that reason, the couple chose a church ceremony that revolved around worship, music and loved ones. “Our family’s pastor, Cary Slater, officiated the wedding, and friends and students of ours played the music throughout the event,” Nicole says. “Because everyone played a part, the ceremony was extremely intimate.”

Before the duo exchanged their vows, they took first-look photos in a nearby forest. Wearing a Hayley Paige long-sleeved dress embellished with froths of tulle and sparkling hues of amethyst and pale pink, the bride simply glowed under the gray November sky.

Their reception was held at The Webb Barn, which was decked out with bright white lights and moody tones. “The theme was for the barn to have a glamorous, yet rustic vibe,” Nicole says. They served barbecue from Danny’s Little Taste of Texas in lieu of a formal dinner, and even brought in food trucks like Tipsy Cones and the Fryborg Food Truck.

With a jazz trio paired with DJ Rob Alberti, who played classic rock, Nicole says the casual-meets-glam theme carried over to the dance floor. She says, “My husband is a musician, so at one point he even joined the jazz trio and jammed with them a bit.”

One moment rose above the rest: “At one point we inadvertently walked out onto the patio away from the reception, and the whole wedding was literally glittering and glowing,” Nicole says. “Its beauty was whimsical in a way that was just perfect for us.”

For Bethany Camp and David Peter Allum, a first date over pizza in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, was the catalyst for a long courtship. Their relationship has memorable moments throughout New England, from cherished weekend getaways in Newport and Boston to a wedding proposal on Cape Cod.

The pair were married along the New England coast at Aldrich Mansion, a 19thcentury manor and estate overlooking picturesque Narragansett Bay. The New England theme was carried throughout Bethany and David’s reception: lobster rolls were served to guests during the cocktail hour, and jars of locally sourced honey were given as favors.

Though they’d initially desired a winter wedding, Bethany and David hosted their nuptials in June. Bethany gave the décor a wintry feel with a moody color palette of burgundy and other rich red hues, accented by gilded metallics.

Of the couple’s decision to hold their wedding in the spring, Bethany says, “I always wanted a fall or winter wedding, but because we couldn’t wait to get married we had a June wedding, and it was perfect!” David also reflects on their special day with great fondness, saying he was the “happiest he’s ever been” in the moment they walked out of Aldrich Mansion’s Our Lady of Providence Chapel as husband and wife. From a cathedral veil handmade by the groom’s grandmother to the romantic color scheme, this wedding was filled with sentimental touches that celebrated a friendship turned to love.

It was love at first sight when Kyndra Angell met Matthew Johnson on a first date in February 2016. “When we reflect back on the night, we both admit that we knew immediately there was something very special between us, and that we had each found our partner for life,” says Kyndra, adding that it was Matt’s big smile and warm personality that calmed her first date jitters. In October 2017, while on a tenday vacation in Florida, Matt proposed to Kyndra. “It was one of the most magical days of my life.”

For their wedding, the couple focused on planning a weekend-long celebration. “Throughout the years, family and friends kept saying that wedding days fly by so quickly, so I knew we wanted to offer a weekend of events for people, without asking them to travel too far,” says Kyndra. “Our first vacation together was to Newport, Rhode Island, and I knew it would be a beautiful place for a wedding, and offer so many other activities for our guests.” Kyndra found Newport Beach House to be a perfect fit for her visions of nautical-themed nuptials and her desire to wed barefoot on the beach. A color palette of ivory, navy and dusty blue hues was incorporated into the event décor, which included floral arrangements by Consider the Lilies featuring classic coastal blooms like hydrangeas, blue thistle and beach grasses. Kyndra’s bridesmaids donned navy and white striped gowns. Says Kyndra, “other than perfection (and without rain), our vision for the entire day was to make it unique to us, and to really portray us as a couple.”

Sometimes when you know, you know. That sentiment was certainly true for Paris Holliday and Colton Knibbe. The couple, who had sparked a longdistance relationship (Colton lived in Utah while Paris lived in Connecticut), had their first official date in Washington, D.C. in November 2017, dating for six months before Colton popped the question. “I had moved back [to the East Coast] in the beginning of May and knew I was going to marry her,” Colton says, adding that after designing a custom ring for Paris, he teased her about a proposal. “I made the mistake of jokingly fake proposing, like Jim did in ‘The Office,’ a few times with an empty box. Ironically enough I kept the ring on me at all times.” Colton kept the farse going until one night after a dinner with family, he put the ring back in the box and formally proposed to Paris.

Three months after they were engaged, the couple wed at Regatta Place in Newport, Rhode Island, a place of particular meaning to the couple. “One of our first long date weekends together was in Newport,” says Paris. Colton knew instantly that the Goat Island venue would be the place where they would host their August nuptials. “It sounds so cliché, but when we walked in, it just felt right … it has this cool, European, but natural vibe with the water right there. It just clicked.”

With only several months to plan their celebration, Paris enlisted her mother, who has experience planning events, to help design a “Napa Valley-meets-Newport” themed soireé, which featured a blend of rustic and natural décor, including farm tables, floral garlands, wine barrels (a nod to Paris’s love of wine), and a neutral color palette of ivory, champagne and greenery. Following a perfect wedding day, the couple and their guests enjoyed brunch at Newport Vineyards, rounding out what Paris calls a weekend-long theme of “winery by the beach.”

While Lindsay and Michael’s love blossomed in the Sunshine State, it was on the opposite end of the eastern seaboard, at one of their favorite travel destinations—the small town of Watch Hill, Rhode Island—where they were engaged and tied the knot.

Ocean House, a Victorian-style venue with sweeping water views, was the perfect setting for their wedding. Says Lindsay, “We started to think about the rich history and old-time beauty there and knew it was right.”

Inspired by the venue, the bride decided on a wedding theme that she describes— with a touch of humor—as “Hollywood glam goes on vacation.” And the couple’s vacation destination did not disappoint. Between the surf and sand, the spa and a day-after beach party, there was something for every guest to enjoy. “On the day of the wedding, my girls and I did the sauna, spa and brunch,” says Lindsay. Another fun touch: “Since my new last name is Rose, it was a ‘Rosé All Day’ theme.”

A few special keepsakes added meaning to the day. Lindsay’s “something new” was a stunning handmade veil, and her “borrowed” item was a best friend’s bracelet that she had worn at her own wedding. Most important to the bride, however, was her “something old”: a hot air balloon trinket from Lindsay’s grandmother placed inside her flower bouquet.

As for Michael, having his father officiate their wedding was a moment that neither he nor Lindsay will ever forget. She says, “Michael and I really felt like husband and wife in that moment.”

After meeting through mutual friends, Samantha McPherson and Ethan Coombs fell in love and became inseparable. However, they didn’t realize just how inseparable they were until Samantha spent a semester abroad. “We experienced a new and challenging adventure when I went to Australia, but it strengthened our relationship more than we thought it could,” she remembers. “Through that time apart, we both knew that we wanted to spend forever together.”

Once Ethan proposed at picturesque Bonnet Point in Narragansett, Rhode Island—a romantic surprise that included a sunset and a hidden photographer to capture the moment—the couple began searching for the ideal location to tie the knot. Their vision was a tall order: sweeping ocean views, greenery, boats, fire pits, a giant dance floor, benches for quiet contemplation and a good spot to roast marshmallows were all on the list. They found these things and more at Dragonline Studios of Jamestown, Rhode Island.

The pair chose the venue for all it had to offer, as well as its unique history. “The location itself was designed using the Golden Mean, which uses sacred proportions in architecture and music,” Samantha says. “The result is a fusion of natural and manmade aesthetics with a radionics overtone.”

While the wedding day location remains unforgettable for the couple and their guests, Samantha also recalls another special moment. “Seeing all my favorite people in the world meet, dance and celebrate. It was so, so magical to see all our hard work come together,” she says. “I danced the night away by the fire and twinkly lights, holding hands with my new husband.”

There’s a bit of magic in every sunset. In Deniz and Michael’s marriage story, it plays a starring role—starting with their engagement at a gazebo in Charleston, South Carolina, where Michael’s parents live. “I pretended there was a restaurant we were going to,” Michael says, “and as the sun was setting, I proposed in the gazebo.” When asked if it was a surprise, both he and Deniz laugh. “I think there was a wedding venue spreadsheet that was pulled out hours after the proposal,” Michael says.

Their search, which began with the couple visiting old plantations in South Carolina, ultimately led them back to their New England roots. After seeing the view from OceanCliff in Newport, Rhode Island, they were sold.

The couple chose flowers with greenery and blush, blue and ivory hues. “I knew I wanted something more organic-looking,” says Deniz. Florals matching the bouquets were arranged in the arbor where they were wed, complementing OceanCliff’s lawn and Narragansett Bay.

Of their planning, Michael says that again, “A lot of it was around the sunset.” Before the big day, Michael’s mother prayed to her late father for a good sunset for the wedding. Deniz says, “There was a moment where it went from perfect blue skies to kind of gray … then there was this perfect orangey-red sunset.”

The bride and groom made an effort to be “in the moment” throughout the celebration, which they describe as an amazing day. “Looking back, that’s what it felt like,” says Deniz.

THE WEDDING OF FAITH & JACKSON

For couple Faith Brar and Jackson Dodge, marriage not only represented joining their two families; it also meant blending their Indian and American cultures.

Faith, who is half Indian, spent eight years in India as a child and has visited annually since. “For me personally, it was important to have a mix of both [cultures],” she says. However, she adds, “I didn’t want to do the traditional five-day wedding.” She and Jackson chose The Chanler at Cliff Walk in Newport for its water views and convenient location for families traveling from Maine and New York, inviting guests for a weekend-long celebration.

Together with Erica Trombetti of Infinite Events, the couple designed a dream event with a geometric theme and color palette of pastel pinks and blues, greenery and gold details. A four-tier cake with alternating marble and geometric patterns, gold geometric chandeliers in the reception tent and dusty-pink curtains lined with greenery made a statement. Beyond the design, it was the turnout of friends and family from across the world—“India, England, Spain, Canada, and every corner of the US,” notes Jackson—that truly enhanced the couple’s multicultural celebration.

During the ceremony, the wedding party entered to American music, which switched to traditional Indian music when Faith walked down the aisle. Other highlights included grandparents’ roles in the celebration—Faith’s father and grandfather walked her down the aisle and Jackson’s grandfather officiated—and their deejay surprising them with an Indian drummer during the reception. “It was everything we’d envisioned but like a billion times more,” says Faith.

Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum in Bristol was only the second venue that Emma and Ben visited in Rhode Island, but they instantly knew it was the one. With spectacular gardens and sweeping views of Narragansett Bay, Blithewold resonated perfectly with Emma’s British ancestry.

“First and foremost, we wanted to showcase the natural beauty of Blithewold with lush florals,” says Emma. Well-planned uplighting of specific trees by Ormonde Productions also helped to capture the natural surroundings into the evening hours.

The couple was lucky enough to secure the services of Elizabeth Lutz of GLASS Event Planning, the winner of Rhode Island’s Best Wedding Planner Award for two years running. Lutz only takes on five weddings per year—as a result, Emma and Ben’s wedding was a highly personalized and custom affair, complete with separate ladies’ and men’s lounge areas furnished by Exquisite Events (the men’s lounge featured leather sofas and a bar cart they dubbed “Ben’s Bar Cart,” which served the couple’s favorite whiskeys and after-dinner digestifs).

Dinner was served under Blithewold’s tent, which Lutz softened with layered white fabric panels flanking the ceiling as well as hanging glass orb lights by Exquisite Events. Copper geometric orbs on the tables were juxtaposed with loose, romantic white flowers.

“The end result was a clean and elevated look that exceeded our wildest expectations,” says Emma.

When it came to their wedding venue, New York City couple Marya and Greg envisioned a coastal locale that was also a midway point for her Greater Boston family and his Baltimore relatives. With its seaside setting and picturesque backdrop, Castle Hill Inn in Newport, Rhode Island, was just right for their Labor Day weekend union.

“We wanted the weekend to feel thoughtful, but also impromptu. We wanted to make it as guest-focused as possible,” says Marya. The couple hosted a Friday dinner for the bridal party at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and a Saturday sail and dinner for all guests.

Marya worked with renowned bridal designer Pnina Tornai to create a one-of-a-kind showpiece that combined elements from three different gowns. Taking a more casual approach with her shoes, the bride laced up custom Nike Dunk Sky Hi sneakers for her walk down the aisle. “I wanted something comfortable that also gave me some height,” says the bride. “It was just fun.” The groom also opted for a laidback footwear style by donning navy Converse sneakers.

During the ceremony, Marya and Greg exchanged vows they had written themselves, and for a personal touch, guests stood up and replied, “We believe in your love.” An elegant reception brimming with vivid florals, wood furniture and cobalt accents rounded out the evening. “I wanted it to feel like an elegant picnic,” says Marya.

Tears streamed down Philip Connor’s face the first time he saw his bride, Michelle Audain, in her wedding gown. But, Michelle says, the emotion of their ceremony was a contrast to their nine-year relationship, which has rested on a lifelong friendship and playful nature.

The newlyweds, who tied the knot last May, grew up in Stoughton, Massachusetts, and attended Northeastern University together. After seven years of dating, Philip creatively popped the question at their Boston home.

“He filled our condo with 86 balloons, one for each month we had been together,” Michelle says. “Dangling from each balloon was a memory, or a life milestone. I’m usually not emotional, but it was so thoughtful that I found myself crying hysterically.”

Eighteen months later, they were wed at The Bohlin in Newport, Rhode Island. Standing on the docks overlooking Narragansett Bay, the couple read their vows before 194 guests. Says Michelle, “It was surprising for people to see the rawness of our relationship… it felt really special.”

Because it was Memorial Day weekend, the couple made the trip worthwhile for guests with a welcome party, a chartered schooner ride around the bay and a barbecue. Michelle says, “We wanted people to feel like it was a destination wedding.”

But it was during the first dance, which featured both Beyonce’s “Love on Top” and Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” that the energy of the weekend came to fruition. The couple invited guests to join them, and Michelle says, “It was electric. Everyone’s energy matched ours, and you could feel the happiness and love radiate from everyone there.”

This past August, Lakeview Pavilion in Foxborough, Massachusetts, was transformed into a colorful Indian wedding for Thanmayi and Verun.

The couple, incorporated their cultural traditions into a modern wedding that reflected their personalities and styles. Guests received a program explaining the meaning of the ceremony’s traditional elements and dined on Indian food.

The bride and groom wore traditional Indian attire, which Thanmayi purchased on a trip to India with her parents, and long garlands of roses. Thanmayi’s ceremonial red-orange saree had a vintage panel sewn along the border with images of a “rani,” or princess, being carried to the “mandapam,” the structure where a Hindu wedding is performed. Her palms were painted with henna in a vintage scene with the “raja” (prince) on one palm facing his rani on the other. “It was one of my favorite parts of our outfits,“ Thanmayi says. Varun wore a chartreuse kurta and turban for the ceremony.

The bride and groom’s parents escorted them into the ballroom. “Many of our guests were adorned in traditional Indian garb, too,” Thanmayi says. “They looked wonderful in all the colors. What a sight when the doors opened for our respective entrances!”

Thanmayi walked down the aisle to a sitar-only rendition of Beyonce's “Halo,” to the mandapam where the ceremony would take place. “We modernized our mandapam with eucalyptus and white draping to complement the venue and contribute the outside-in ambience,” Thanmayi says. A tapestry initially separated the couple, symbolic of two separate lives that would soon be joined as one.

“One of the super fun traditions we included was a portion of the ceremony called ‘Talambralu,’ where the bride and groom shower each other with pearls and turmeric rice, while our family and friends cheered us along,” Thanmayi says. “This ceremony is a symbol of sharing, happiness and familial support.”

THE WEDDING OF DOMINIQUE & DANIEL

Twenty years of friendship and nearly ten years of dating led couple Dominique Bombredi and Daniel Buffum to their happily ever after. “We’ve known each other since the second grade. We met at our local Unitarian church and have been friends ever since,” says Dominique. Despite attending separate high schools and colleges, the pair had always remained close, knowing deep down they were destined for a lifetime together.

“I just got to the point where I couldn’t and didn’t want to imagine my life without her,” says Daniel. “It really become more of a question of when [we would get married]."

While vacationing aboard a cruise to Bermuda in May 2016, Daniel hatched a plan to ask Dominique for her hand in marriage. During a formal dinner, Daniel snuck back to the couple’s stateroom and decorated the space with dozens of photos the couple had taken together. “It was every picture we had together—even before we were dating,” says Dominique. Following their dinner and a lap around the ship, the couple returned to their room where Daniel popped the question.

Flash forward to 2018, and the couple had planned to wed at Tower Hill Botanical Garden in Boylston, Massachusetts. “We really wanted some place that had indoor and outdoor spaces and a really good rain protocol.” Tower Hill’s separate event spaces and glass conservatory had the allure (and functionality) Dominique and Daniel desired. They were instantly sold. The couple enlisted Cristen Faherty of Cristen & Co. events to curate a whimsical, one-of-a-kind “modish botanical enchantment” wedding design. “I said ‘please just go crazy [with the design],’” says Dominique. “Hiring Cristen was the best decision we could have made.”

Reflecting on the most memorable moments of the day, the couple agrees that their first look as well as reconnecting with friends and family were most profound. Says Dominique, “Looking around and seeing everyone having such a good time—that was so meaningful to me.”

While taking her lunch break one day at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Caitlyn Leddy received an unexpected gift: an engagement ring to accessorize her scrubs. Her now-husband, Zachary, surprised her with the biggest question of their lives. “I had already been at work since early in the morning, I had no makeup on … I was not at all prepared for it,” Caitlyn recalls.

The couple, who met while they were students at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, celebrated their love on June 9 at The Pavilion at Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Inspired by the colors of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where Caitlyn attended graduate school, they chose Carolina Blue linens, invitations, and flowers to accentuate the classic shades of white and ivory that adorned the venue. The newlyweds credit Beach Plum Floral + Event Design for creating a floral fairy tale throughout their venue. “I was so nervous about having any color on the tables, but everything came together perfectly,” Caitlyn says.

“My favorite part of the day was seeing Caitlyn’s expression when she walked into the room for the first time,” says Zachary. “To see her so happy after so much stress and planning made it all worth it.”

As an event planner, Jessica Fisher knows a thing or two about how to plan a wedding. So when it came time to design her own big day, she heeded the same advice she gives other couples: “Decide on what the most important elements are and make those your North Star,” she says.

In the case of Jessica and her husband, Marco, their “North Star” was a celebration of their unique roots, as well as the family they had become together. Lush hydrangeas were included to mimic the groom's homeland of the Azores, while the bride's fond memories of her New England upbringing were reflected in delicate lilacs.

The couple loved the idea of a “micro wedding,” so they chose to have just 17 members of their immediate families in attendance.

The importance of family was also reflected in their vows. “During our ceremony, I surprised Marco by saying a few vows to his children, William, 14, and Izabelly, 9. It was a very emotional moment for us all,” says Jessica.

For Marco, the vows were one of the things that he remembers most about their wedding. “We chose vows that spoke about love, respect and giving the best of ourselves. It was important to communicate to each other that we were choosing to share all our life experiences together,” he says.

Newlyweds Kate Brier and Patrick Duca celebrated the beginning of forever when they wed on July 20, 2018, surrounded by family and friends.

Located on Mattapoisett Harbor, Shining Tides provided an idyllic setting for the couple to host the casual, coastal-themed wedding they’d dreamed of.

“We met in a town called Cardiff-by-the-Sea, just North of San Diego,” says Kate, a Dartmouth, Massachusetts, native. “And we actually met on the beach there, which is why we wanted a coastal wedding. After our ceremony, we walked down to the beach and spent some alone time with our toes in the sand.”

In her striking, strapless gown by Anais Anette, the bride looked as classic as the vintage family jewelry she wore. “The jewelry was my late grandmother’s,” says Kate. “It was really special for me to be able to wear her diamond earrings and pearl bracelet.”

Elegance graced the entire day, from the exquisite flowers by Farrissey Floral Design to a four-tier wedding cake adorned with greenery and coral-colored garden roses. The couple’s wedding band, The Real Deal, provided energetic entertainment that kept guests dancing all night long. “A highlight for us was a 100-person conga line that surrounded the entire venue,” Kate says. “I designed a custom tulle skirt overlay for my gown that I removed for the dance party!”

THE WEDDING OF SARAH & RYAN

It was an island getaway on Block Island that began couple Sarah Swinkin and Ryan Bates’ love story.The co-workers and friends spent the weekend together and soon their friendship blossomed into affection. “Sarah knew I really liked her, but it took her a little while to realize she liked me,” says Ryan.

Three years later, the couple returned to the spot where their love story started. This time, Ryan got down on one knee and asked Sarah a pivotal question: “Will you marry me?”

“Ryan thought his job was done, but I knew the fun was just beginning,” says Sarah. The couple wanted a simple and elegant venue for their vows and found Indian Pond Country Club to be the perfect place. Wanting their wedding to be less about a theme and more about celebrating their love, the couple kept their décor simple while also complementing the autumnal season. They chose a color palette of orange, purple and burgundy, which was featured in towering floral arrangements on reception tables as well as florals affixed to a ceremony arbor. Table numbers created from LEGOs, cupcakes, and music from the Game of Thrones “Red Wedding” provided additional touches of personality to the event.

THE WEDDING OF JULIE & TJ

Five years, two apartments, and one engagement after a fateful Grouper date in Boston’s Back Bay, Julie Czerepak and TJ Hussey were married in Boston’s Seaport on September 29, 2018. A ceremony at Our Lady of Good Voyage was followed by a reception at the Institute of Contemporary Art. The venues offered guests a taste of the neighborhood the couple calls home and also the one in which they were engaged.

Food and drink took precedence during Julie and TJ’s special day and featured a personal twist: the featured signature cocktails—the Madeline and the Stella—were named after the couple’s two cats, the late-night snack options included pierogis as an homage to Julie’s Polish background and, in lieu of a traditional wedding cake, guests were treated to a Ring Ding bar. The playful fare, textural and organic floral arrangements featuring Julie’s favorite flower, the anemone, as well as romantic candlelight, created a stunning atmosphere inside the art-steeped ICA.

Says Julie, “It was so amazing to be able to celebrate and dance the night away next to some of the most amazing works of art … I couldn’t feel my feet the next day!” To rest their tired limbs and enjoy their newfound status of husband and wife, Julie and TJ retreated to Nantucket for a week of R&R and reminiscing about their wedding, which TJ describes as a day they will “forever cherish.”

Alyssa Bogdanow and Andy Arens wanted a wedding in the heart of Boston, but in a unique setting. What could be more unusual than New England Aquarium?

“It’s not like we’re ‘fishy’ people,” says Alyssa, although the reception would inevitably include some aquatic details. The decision to host their nuptials at the aquarium ultimately boiled down to a desire for a conveniently located waterfront setting that also offered a sizable event space. “We wanted an outdoor ceremony,” says Alyssa. ”The aquarium overlooks the harbor. They had a tent out back that could fit a ton of people.”

The wedding day began at The Langham, located in downtown Boston, where both the bridal party and groomsmen prepared for a day of celebrating. Wanting to take in the city prior to their event, Alyssa and Andy walked to Post Office Square and eventually to Christopher Columbus Park to take pre-ceremony photos. Coincidentally, and on par with their nautical reception location, there was a fish-themed art installation on display at the park. As the couple continued on towards their reception along Boston Harbor, a street musician played “Here Comes the Bride” as passersby cheered. The couple got another ovation from an oceanic onlooker during the wedding service. At just the right moment, a seal surfaced from the harbor with a bark, adding a dose of comedy to the ceremony and prompting their rabbi to respond with, “Amen!”

Following a night of dancing at their tented reception, the newlyweds, with family and friends in tow, paraded into Faneuil Hall with sparklers to continue the festivities. “The reaction [when we arrived] at the bar was fun,” remembers Alyssa, adding, “though it paled in comparison to the reaction of the hundreds of people as we spilled out onto the street at 2 a.m. when all the bars in Faneuil closed. It was an out of body experience!”

THE WEDDING OF LEAH & QUENTIN

There are few more perfect backdrops to begin a lifelong love story than Italy. It was there, in one of the most romantic places in the world, that Quentin got down on one knee before his vero amore, Leah. “It was just the two of us and Quentin proposed with my great-grandmother’s ring,” Leah remembers. “The ring had been lost, but luckily my mom found it and mailed it to him just two days before we left on our trip.”

In August, the couple tied the knot before their family and friends at the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Set against a modern backdrop, their wedding incorporated artistic embellishments and hot-pink accents. Of their handwritten vows, Leah says, “There was a lot of humor in our words and that brought levity to the rest of the day.”

Another personal element was the table décor: watercolor paintings of places the couple has traveled, surrounded by textured floral arrangements by Laura Jean Floral. “The table garland had fruits like plums and pomegranates, and also herbs,” Leah says. “She created something that I wanted but wasn’t able to describe.”

Leah was most excited to bring her Indian culture to her and Quentin’s big day. One sentimental touch was her veil, which was made by a close friend from the fabric of one of her grandmother’s saris. “It was nice to have a piece of her there since our celebration in India isn’t until later this year,” she says.

Massachusetts natives Taylor King and Joseph Lattari met when they were freshmen at Syracuse University. “We were in the same 8 a.m. economics class,” Taylor recalls. “He seemed mysterious and confident.” As for Joseph, he says that he was especially drawn to how “genuine and authentic” she was.

In October 2016, after dating for nine years, Taylor joined Joseph on a business trip to Lucerne, Switzerland. They rented a boat to spend the afternoon having a picnic on Lake Lucerne, and on their way back, Joseph asked Taylor to turn around and strike a “Titanic” pose for a photo. “When I turned back around, he was on one knee,” she says. Nearly two years later, Taylor and Joseph—who live in Brookline, Massachusetts, but are planning to move to New York City so Joseph can attend business school at Columbia University—were married in a beautiful wedding at the Boston Public Library.

“I envisioned an outside wedding near water or mountains, but when we saw the library, we knew that was it,” Taylor says. “The courtyard was so beautiful and unique. It sealed the deal for us.”

The bride says she loves planning and design, so she enjoyed all the details and finding ways for them to personalize the event, like writing their own vows and incorporating flowers from her childhood home into the décor.

As a teenager, Alicia Spector dreamed of marrying the cute lifeguard at the Cape Cod beach she frequented. “Growing up, I would call it unrequited love since I looked at him from afar and he wanted nothing to do with me,” she says. On September 23, 2017, Alicia’s dream came true when she married Scott Opie, the heartthrob lifeguard, at Bourne Farm in North Falmouth, Massachusetts.

Their bohemian-style farm wedding was a celebration of love and lifelong friendship between their two families. Leslie Lee Floral Design provided the ethereal garden vibe Alicia envisioned. “I told her to think of any flower she’s ever wanted to work with and go nuts. I showed up that day having no idea what I was going to see, which I think was my favorite part,” says Alicia.

Eschewing wedding traditions, Alicia and Scott chose a donut bar over a cake, a first look next to Scott’s grandmother’s house, and mix-and-match bridesmaid dresses.

“I contributed about one percent of the planning that went into designing and executing our wedding day, so when we made it to Bourne Farm, I just really enjoyed seeing Alicia's vision come to life,” says Scott.

The assistance of a day-of coordinator helped with logistics and alleviated any lastminute stress. “I was able to just show up and be blissfully ignorant,” says Alicia. “It’s essential for anyone who is doing an outdoor wedding.”

Sometimes love finds us when we least expect it. This was the case for Carly Kelly and Jonathan Snediker. The pair, who both attended Nichols College and were longtime friends, would often played matchmaker with one another, setting the other one up with his and her respective friends. “It was a running joke,” says Carly, explaining that after failed attempts to find each other suitors, they decided to go on a date. “We were actually each other’s ‘plus-ones’ to several weddings that summer,” Carly says.

After two years of dating, John proposed to Carly. While John initially had a wellthought out plan of surprising her at a party one evening in the company of their family and friends, he decided he couldn’t wait any longer and “pulled the trigger at 8:30 in the morning while [Carly] was in her bathrobe.” Says Carly of the impromptu proposal, “Surprised is an understatement!”

The couple hired Jamie Bohlin of Cape Cod Celebrations to oversee the design of their wedding, which Carly describes as “seaside chic.” Says Carly, “I was so antinautical. I wanted the design to be more formal and different.” For her color scheme, Carly chose silver and ivory hues, adding pops of red by way of colored glassware, red roses in floral centerpieces as well as custom-embroidered napkins at each place setting. The use of that color, she says, was inspired by the red sundress she wore for her and John’s engagement photos.

Beyond having perfect weather and a flawless event, it was the sentimental moments of their big day the couple cherishes most, including the first time John saw Carly in her wedding dress (a custom gown by renowned designer Austin Scarlett) which, at his request, was not during a first look. “When I pictured my wedding, the first time I wanted to see my wife was when she walked down the aisle,” says John. “For me, that was the best part of the day.”.

When they met at a mutual friend’s birthday party in Washington, D.C., where they were both living, Colin Morrison and Charlotte Lamontagne took a series of pictures together in a photo booth. They kept those pictures, and four years later (almost to the day), they took a new snapshot together—only this time, as husband and wife in their wedding-day photo booth.

The two had their first date a week after meeting, and it lasted for six hours, Charlotte recalls. “I thought he was really cute and such a nice guy,” she says. “And he was such a great listener.” Colin says he loved her smile and how she “laughs at everything… and is a genuinely nice person.”

Having spent summers in Scarborough, Maine, Charlotte says that getting married there was important to her; Colin, who has visited the area with her every summer since they met, agreed.

They said their wedding planner, Beautiful Days, helped make everything run smoothly, and the “woodsy elements” and fairy lights inside a clear-top tent at the Prouts Neck Country Club created a wonderful atmosphere that was decidedly them.

The couple said food—including a sundae bar, a late-night poutine truck and a croquembouche cake—was also a major consideration at the wedding. “We made sure to incorporate food that reflected the different parts of our lives to make the wedding feel more us.”

When she was a young girl, Liza Reynolds had dreamed about getting married at The Allen Farm, a bucolic sheep farm located in the Martha’s Vineyard village of Chilmark. With rolling green hills, stone walls and stunning ocean views, the farm was indeed a fairytale venue, but it also carried a special significance to her family over the years.

“My father, a real estate lawyer on the island, had helped to maintain Allen family ownership over the years, protecting the land from development and keeping its natural beauty,” explains Liza, who was born and raised on the Vineyard.

On the day of her marriage to Justin Merolla, the bride and her dad took a “very long walk” on a sunny, blue-sky late summer’s day through a field to the outdoor ceremony overlooking the ocean. As they made their way down the aisle toward the wedding arbor, bagpipes played “Highland Cathedral.”

“Having grown up on Magnolia Avenue as a family, we got two magnolia bushes and put one on each side of the arbor, so we had [my parents] Susan and Joe Merolla with us on our special day,” said Justin, who also carried a pocket square Liza and his sister made from his mother’s wedding dress, and wore his father’s favorite watch.

Vineyard-inspired details were many: Chilmark Chocolates, oyster shell salt-andpepper shakers, a menu created from locally sourced ingredients and, in lieu of favors, donations to friends’ and families’ favorite island nonprofits.

Two years after meeting on Nantucket over Memorial Day weekend in 2014, Stefanie Rice said yes to Brian Barnett’s proposal during one of Galley Beach’s storied sunsets. The couple, who has traveled to the island nearly every weekend since, could think of no better location to say their “I do’s.” “We actually hung out at [what would become] our ceremony site the first night we met,” says Stefanie.

The couple added their own modern twists on wedding traditions, such as choosing to do a first look before the ceremony. “We just wanted to get all of our pictures done beforehand and actually enjoy cocktail hour,” says Stephanie. “It eased the jitters and was nice to see each other and be excited together.”

They also opted to replace an intimate rehearsal dinner with a welcome party for all 150 guests, which allowed them to spend more time mingling with family and friends. Welcome bags complete with Pepperidge Farm Nantucket cookies, Nantucket Nectars, Cape Cod Potato Chips, and local N Magazine replaced traditional favors.

To prepare for their big day, Stefanie and Brian took five dance classes and choreographed a dance to “Fix You” by Coldplay, a moment that both agree was the highlight of their day. Décor in shades of green and white hung in The Nantucket Hotel & Resort and lush greenery from Soiree Floral helped execute their desired tropical island vibe.

While wedding planning involves making dozens of decisions, the one thing Ginger Kroll didn’t have to stress over was whether to take her husband’s last name—she already shared it. After meeting on the dating app Happn, she and Charlie compared family trees to ensure that they weren’t related, despite both being Krolls. “Our cake topper was #KrollForeva,” says Ginger.

Their beachy Block Island nuptials served as the celebration of their new modern family, which began from the moment Charlie proposed on the island. “[My kids and I] wanted to propose together. I thought it was important that she’s not just joining me, but also the kids,” he says.

On their wedding day, Charlie’s children, Parker, 11, and Maisie, 9, served as the best man and flower girl, respectively.

Music took center stage at their Sullivan House reception. Instead of dancing, the couple opted to perform a first song together. They also hired acoustic guitarist Tracy Bundy to perform a soundtrack throughout the night.

Ginger notes that their ceremony was about “the island, nature and coming together.” For a West Coast-inspired aesthetic, they turned to Block Island’s own Painted Rock Designs for florals. The bride also spent months traveling across New England to purchase rattan furniture from Facebook marketplaces for lounging. “I was a big supporter of Ginger’s vision for the day,” Charlie jokes.

When Jason Crotty proposed to Kara Abbott on June 10, 2017, he wasn’t aware of the importance of the date. Kara’s late grandmother was born on June 10, so sharing her engagement day with the person she also called her best friend was a beautiful tribute. “The engagement was beyond what I could have imagined,” Kara explains about a scavenger hunt leading to an intimate garden proposal Jason designed with help from family.

The couple grew up in Keene, New Hampshire, where Kara knew Jason as the “shy basketball player” in high school. It wasn’t until years later, when the bride was living in Boston and the groom was back in their hometown, that the pair began a longdistance romance.

Wanting a natural setting that offered raw beauty and simplicity, Kara and Jason gathered their loved ones at the Mountain Top Inn & Resort in Vermont on May 11. One of the bride’s fondest moments was sharing the pre-ceremony notes she and Jason wrote for each other while standing on opposite sides of the barn doors at their ceremony site. While reading them out loud, they held hands through a small opening between the grand doors. “It was nice that we didn’t see one another before the ceremony, but still had the opportunity to chat and read our notes,” says Kara. “Jason rarely gets teary-eyed or emotional, so to hear him from the other side of the barn doors express those feelings and emotions caught me off guard in a good way.”

Nestled amid 70 acres of manicured landscape and tranquil waters in Warwick Neck, Rhode Island, Aldrich Mansion is an opulent, Frenchinspired château with a beautiful Catholic chapel right on the property.

“The chapel is a gorgeous ceremony space, and the mansion takes your breath away,” says Laura Hoyos, who wed her husband, Andres, on October 5, 2018. The Arlington, Virginia, couple chose the gilded estate for its Baroque style and commanding views of Narragansett Bay. “Each room is more beautiful than the next, and the view of the bay is amazing. We decided to keep our theme classic and romantic to coordinate with its beauty.”

Steeped in history, Aldrich Mansion pays homage to the life and style of the 19th-century aristocracy. “The mansion has an Old-World feel,” says John Gazerro, director of the site. “The ceiling in the foyer is reminiscent of the ones found in Europe.” Senator Nelson W. Aldrich commissioned the home in 1896 and a team of European craftsmen worked diligently for 16 years to complete the project. Today, the stately home belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence.

Aldrich Mansion offers a sprawling 7,000-squarefoot event space that can accommodate both large receptions and intimate affairs. The grand marble staircase is a showpiece and one of the most popular areas for photographs in the home. The venue hosts one event per day, which gives couples exclusive use of the property to dress (there’s a stunning secondfloor bridal suite), take photos and enjoy time with family and friends. Orchestrating all the details is Tony Maggiacomo, an event planner with more than three decades of experience. “I love when happy couples tell me they had the best night of their lives or that we made their wedding a dream come true,” says Maggiacomo. “That’s what makes me work so hard.”

Executive Chef Al Langeveld, who apprenticed with The Netherlands royal family chef, has been overseeing the kitchen at the estate for 30 years. His Elizabethaninspired menu offers a beef tenderloin and includes a tiered wedding cake. For any given event, the dessert room can include up to 20 different treats, including a mouthwatering bananas Foster. “The idea for a dessert room came from Chef Al about 20 years ago,” says Gazerro. “We used a smaller room initially, but it became so popular we had to move it to the larger library room.”

Couples must be of the Catholic faith to use the onsite chapel for their wedding ceremony, but brides and grooms of any religion can host their reception in the mansion.

Can you imagine a better place than where the Pilgrims founded Plymouth Colony in 1620?

Steeped in rich, colonial history Plimoth Plantation offers two beautiful outdoor ceremony sites: the Hornblower Garden, a secluded early 20th-century perennial garden featuring stone walls and a reflection pool, and the Riverview Terrace, a newly renovated space overlooking the Eel River.

“The Hornblower Garden is really special–it feels like a throwback to another era. It was designed and installed in 1920 as part of the original Hornblower Estate by Mary Parsons Cunningham, one of the first female landscape architects in the United States,” says Kate Sheehan, associate director of media relations & marketing at Plimoth Plantation. “The Riverview Terrace offers stunning views of the Eel River and Cape Cod Bay. It’s not uncommon to see a pair of swans floating by.”

Plimoth Plantation recently transformed a portion of what was previously a sweeping lawn into a formal, open-air ceremony space with a hardscaped aisle and terrace offering Eel River as a backdrop. “In the future we hope to restore the garden beds to their original planting design as well as to strengthen some of the hardscaping features,” notes Sheehan.

In addition to the property’s photo ops, newlyweds can also have costumed Pilgrim reenactors make an appearance at their reception to enhance the historical vibe of their big day—and provide some entertainment for guests.

Now more than ever, couples understand the importance of making their reception menu a top priority when planning their wedding. They want to wow their crowd with food that’s not only delicious but that also expresses their personal style and enhances the overall experience.

We asked their team to zero in on some of the top trends they’re seeing in wedding catering and how they’re providing couples and their guests a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

BACK TO BASICS

Farm-to-table and locally sourced cuisine isn’t a new concept to caterers, but caterers are now embracing a simpler, back-to-basics approach when it comes to cooking. “We’re shifting towards menus that feature more fresh food—letting the food speak more for itself rather than using heavy sauces and starches,” says Karen Tungett, general manager at Blackstone Caterers. Focusing on refined, minimalist-style meals, Blackstone’s 2019 menu includes a variety of colorful, highquality and limited-ingredient dishes. A featured seafood plate, for example, includes seared Georges Bank scallops with smoked oyster mushrooms, pea purée, Thumbelina carrots and parsley chive oil.

ELEVATED EXPERIENCE

“We’ve noticed with our clientele that people want more elegance—a little more service and sophistication, that includes personal touches and an overall [elevated] experience,” says sales manager Shannon Driscoll. Many Blackstone clients opt for the “white-glove” service, which includes a more personalized, detail-oriented experience featuring waitstaff clad in white gloves and white dinner jackets, and servicing each guest individually.

Many couples desire a dining experience that’s unique and reflective of their personal style. Often, Blackstone Caterers will curate custom menus tailored to their clients’ preferences, while also weaving in personal touches. “Whatever is going to make [the food] special to that couple,” says Driscoll. “[We have] a couple that got engaged in Paris, so we’re [serving] macarons for dessert.” A couple that travels to Mexico each year on vacation might enjoy tacos and quesadillas for a late-night snack, while a couple of German descent might like a make-your-own pretzel bar. “It’s little touches where we can weave in [a couple’s] personality and moments in their life that were special to them.”

Clients have become more discerning of the varietals they choose to serve throughout their wedding day, especially what’s poured with dinner. “We’re seeing people that really want nice wines,” says Tungett. “We’ve revamped our wine list as well as one of our high-end bar packages because people care more.” Tungett adds that a number of clients have recently started requesting California wines to support vineyards affected by the recent wildfires.

Imagine this: human cherry trees in blossom greet your wedding guests with ceremony programs; a bronze William Shakespeare reads a poetic verse during your cocktail hour; and to your and your guest's delight, golden goddess statues pour wine alongside the bartender. This unforgettable performance-art fusion is an experience masterminded by Providence-based entertainment company TEN31 Productions (ten31productions.com).

This “décortainment,” as founder Joe Pari calls it, dates back centuries. “When I learned that it had roots in royal weddings, it was quite eyeopening,” he says, explaining that living statues often lined the procession route from the abbey where a couple was married to the palace where a reception was held. With an ever-expanding repertoire and hundreds of actors on hand, TEN31 is able to curate their clients' wildest visions—from an enchanted “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” motif complete with human topiaries and fairies, to a gods and goddesses-themed installation featuring marble and patina deities.

For a recent wedding at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Aboretum, TEN31 created a “Legends of the Sea” installation for couple Logan and Sam, which included bronze pirates, Poseidon, a mermaid and a glowing jellyfish puppet. Actors even performed a custom- choreographed dance to one of the couple’s favorite songs. “Being that they were to be married at Blithewold and right on the water, they (the couple) loved this idea of a nautical theme, but one that was also sophisticated,” says Pari. “Both Sam and I have always been quite creative, and some would say, teeter off the beaten path,” says Logan, who notes that she and her now-husband, Sam, were inspired by the television series “Black Sails.” “I really wanted to incorporate a 1700s shipwreck style into the wedding without being hokey or over-the-top. We knew that the statues would provide the element of surprise we were looking for and everyone would leave talking about it,” she says. “Our guests were so enamored with them, they took so many pictures and they kept coming up to us saying ‘Wow, this wedding is so incredibly special, so fun and so you and Sam!’ Really, we just wanted everyone to have a fun time and Ten31 Productions really was the icing on the cake to an already magical day.”

1. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!

Choosing the setting for your photo session is important and should be meaningful. If you love the beach, pick your favorite sandy spot; if you're outdoorsy, choose a scenic park or walking trail; or if you love the city, have the skyline as your backdrop. For those who feel more comfortable at home (because there's no place like home, right?) choose your front stoop or living room and keep it casual.

2. DRESS TO IMPRESS

Dressing the part is important to a successful photo shoot. Many couples coordinate their outfits and color schemes, but it's best not to be too matchy-matchy. There's no particular dress code, but Gesmondi suggests that whether you're going for a formal or casual look, try to keep it classic: stick to solid prints instead of intricate patterns, stripes, plaids or bright neon colors.

Wedding Entertainment Trends: WHAT’S HOT FOR 2019

Choosing your wedding entertainment is no longer as simple as just deciding between a band or a DJ. After all, you want to create a memorable celebration for your guests while also sharing a bit of your personality. From unique collaborations to photo booths, award-winning New England-based DJ Mike Amado of Entertainment Specialists (entertainmentspecialists.com) shares what’s trending in wedding entertainment in 2019.

DJ-BAND COLLABORATIONS

Gone are the days when couples had to choose between hiring a DJ or live entertainment. Why not have both? “One thing we see trending is DJband combos, where a DJ will spin and have a percussionist play with him or her,” says Amado. “Styles of music [we perform at weddings] have always remained unique to the individual couple. We like to do a discovery of our clients’ individual music taste so we know what they’re into—whether it’s EDM or country, or even both,” says Amado. As new generations of couples tie the knot, however, Amado says music preferences have changed slightly. “Some of the younger couples we’re seeing [more recently] like ‘Trap Music’ (a combination of hip-hop/rap, dub and electronic dance music). And I think we’ll see more of that this year.”

“Photo booths have come a long way,” says Amado.
