New Business Models Wanted 4EM is our Ahmedabad International conference that is to discuss the evolving energy models in emerging economies. Why do we need new models of energy now? Development of sustainable energy solutions has a history of more than thirty years. But it is a common assessment that the efforts for sustainable energy have been lacking something seriously, otherwise the expected fuel switching would have been on the track by this time. The last quarter of twentieth century treated renewable sources of energy as ‘non-conventional alternatives’ for the conventional fuels. The 1972 Stockholm conference was convened to highlight the pollution effects of fossil fuels – yet nations of the world over engaged in the search of alternative energy sources in the later years mainly to ensure add-ons if the conventional fuel supply is hit. . The two drivers of sustainable energy – energy security and climate change – though appear to aid mutually, do not orient fully on each other. It is time to grade the perspective and make the preference. We need comprehensive solutions, not just add-ons, if the target of sustainability is in the visible future. If energy is to become part of the infrastructure in the 21st century, such infrastructure development has to be uncompromisingly sustainable. To realize this dream we need to promote new business models in energy too; it is proven that the current models which are mostly state subsidized RE schemes, of limited scope and marginal benefits, cannot take us forward at the desired pace. Business models like ESCO and RESCO need to be promoted through regulations and incentives. Limitations
of present ESCO/RESCO models may be tweaked to receive considerations available for long term infrastructure financing to make it a win-win situation for all stake holders viz-financiers, clients and equipment suppliers. Such fiscal incentives given to energy users will be more effective than subsidies provided to equipment manufacturers. Such a move can catalyze research in energy efficiency as well as commercialization of technologies. Also, let there be large scale entrepreneurial efforts to reduce the carbon foot print by innovative business models of sustainable energy like supply of solar charged battery to replace portable diesel generator, and bottled biogas to substitute for LPG and so on. We need a variety of business models in energy that can attract investors, consultants, agents, dealers and above all the largest section of the society. We need the technologies to be fine-tuned to do useful and reliable service. We need energy business models of large scale. SEEM invites you all to join the brain-storming discussions and debates at Ahmedabad scheduled from 12th to 14th December 2016.

India to launch clean energy equity fund
Overall Indian power deficit at 0.7
The Indian government, together with three state-run firms, will set up Clean Energy Equity Fund (CEEF) for renewable energy companies to tap. CEEF will be to the tune of $2 billion, starting next fiscal year. The government hopes that this will attract pension and insurance funds from Canada and Europe.
India recorded overall power deficit of 0.7 per cent in the first 7 months of the current fiscal, with availability of 681.34 billion units, as against demand of 686.09 BU. In 2015-16, this deficit was 2.1 per cent. The government has planned to make the country energy surplus with generating target of 1,178 billion units to achieve overall electricity surplus of 1.1 per cent in 2016-17.
It is expected that around $600 million of the initial pool will come from the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund, under the finance ministry, and the rest from state entities like NTPCBSE Ltd, Rural Electrification Corp. and the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency. India has set a renewable energy target of 175 GW by 2022, more than five times the current strength, as part of the fight against climate change by the world's third-biggest greenhouse gas emitter and to supply power to all of the country's 1.3 billion people.
According to the Load Generation Balance Report (LGBR) for 2016-17, the Centre has set a target of generating 1,178 billion units with overall surplus of 1.1 per cent and peak surplus of 2.6 per cent. Similarly, against the peak power requirement of 1.59 GW, as much as 1.56 MW was available in April-October period, resulting in peak power deficit of 1.6 per cent. Last fiscal, peak power deficit was 3.2 per cent.

Indo-Swiss building energy efficiency project extended to 2021 Switzerland and India have inked a pact to extend the Indo-Swiss Building Energy Efficiency Project (BEEP) by five years till 2021, based on successes achieved by the project in the first phase. Earlier, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Governments of India and Switzerland for a joint project on energy efficiency of buildings in November 2011, for a duration of five years. Based on the excellent results achieved by the partnership the governments jointly decided to extend the MoU to November 2021.
During the 12th Plan period (2012-17), a capacity addition of about 88928.2 MW, against the target of 88537 MW, from conventional sources have been achieved till October 31, 2016 and about 21,128 MW against the target of 30000 MW from renewable sources have been achieved till September 30, 2016. The growth of domestic coal supply to power plants has been around 6.2 per cent during 2015-16. The objective of the collaboration has been to reduce the overall energy consumed in buildings through sharing of best practices between the two countries in energy efficient design, construction and technologies. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) were designated as implementing agencies for the project. MNRE eases norms for entry in wind power sector In an effort to encourage more wind turbines manufacturers to enter the Indian market, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has done away with a crucial committee which used to approve turbine models before these could be sold. Henceforth, turbine makers will need to only provide details of their products online to the MNRE to obtain the necessary certification to sell, and if the products satisfy the specifications, they will automatically be included in the ministry's Revised List of Models and Manufacturers (RLMM).
Prime Minister wishes the best to E4M

The disbanded committee comprised representatives from IWTMA, IWPA and NIWE. Manufacturers had to brief the committee about the particular standards their products conformed to after which the committee would take a decision.

However, as before, overseas turbine makers will still be required to set up a manufacturing facility in India if they wish to sell. Some of them see this too as an entry barrier.
