TURN & LIGHT Who would have thought that amidst the busy life of modern world, several corners of the earth still have no access to electricity, particularly in Ghana, Africa. According to Ben Markham, a former Vice-President of Engineering at world’s leading oil firm, schools in remote area still have no access to electricity. Some even lack amusement equipments for kids to play with. Therefore, he set up a non-profit organization called “Empower Playgrounds” which invented electricity generating merry-go-round for children age 8 - 12 years old. This special merry-go-round could generate electricity approximately 150 watts per hour. It is equipped with battery to restore electricity to power LED lamps for children during the night.

As a host of the forthcoming Winter Olympic Games, Russia has launched a fun Olympic campaign which is so successful that it has become a talk of the town already. By setting up an underground ticket vending machine equipped with movement sensors, each person will receive 1 free underground ticket for every 30 exercise movements. This gimmick does not only give away free tickets, but it also encourages people to exercise through this fun game.

HOME NOT ALONE Nowadays, natural catastrophe has become even more destructive. Take the latest one that almost wiped away the entire town of the Philippines for an instance. Shelters for homeless victims have become essential when catastrophe strikes. But one of the problem is that the victims have no private space when they are at the shelters. Therefore, Shigeru Ban, a Japanese architect, has solved this problem by designing paper tubes of various sizes to build the individual partitions.

Marketing เทรนด์การตลาดมาแรงประจ�ำปี 2014

นักการตลาดจากทั่วโลกลงความเห็นเป็นเสียงเดียวกันว่า “เล่าเรื่อง” การตลาดในแบบ Content Marketing คื อ ทิ ศ ทางการ เพื่อให้ผู้บริโภค บริหาร Content ของแต่ละแบรนด์ที่ทรงประสิทธิภาพที่สุด โดยเว็บไซต์ Brightcove.com รายงานว่า ปัจจุบัน Content จดจำ�เนื้อหา Marketing ได้รับความสนใจและเป็นที่นิยมในกลุ่มธุรกิจ ที่นำ�เสนอ แบบ B2B (Business to Business) โดยมีการใช้งานเป็น แบบติดตา สัดส่วนสูงถึง 93% โดยเฉพาะในปี 2014 ทีม่ กี ารคาดการณ์วา่ การทำ�ตลาดในรูปแบบ Content Marketing จะยังคงเป็น นำ�ไปสู่ความ ที่นิยมและมีการเติบโตขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดย 58% ของ ผู้ประกอบการธุรกิจ B2B ระบุว่า มีแผนที่จะเพิ่มเงินลงทุน “ติดใจ” เพือ่ ทำ�การตลาดผ่าน Content Marketing เพิม่ ขึน้ อีกในปีถดั ไป ทั้งนี้ Content หมายถึง การแสดงความสำ�คัญในตัวแบรนด์ สินค้า และการบริการ ผ่านช่องทางต่างๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นอีเมล โซเชียลมีเดีย หรือการประกาศออกสื่ออื่นๆ เช่น โฆษณาทางโทรทัศน์ โดยเน้นการ “เล่าเรื่อง” เพื่อให้ผู้บริโภคจดจำ�เนื้อหาที่นำ�เสนอแบบ ติดตา นำ�ไปสู่ความ “ติดใจ” ในตัวแบรนด์ต่อไป ดังนั้น Content Marketing จึงไม่ใช่ เรื่องใหม่ แต่เป็นเรื่องใหญ่สำ�หรับปัจจุบัน โดยหัวใจของเนื้อหาที่ใช้ในการทำ� Content Marketing ต้องมีความโดดเด่นเป็นเอกลักษณ์แตกต่างจากคนอื่น นำ�เสนอได้อย่างตรงจุด และเป็นข้อมูลที่น่าสนใจสามารถนำ�ไปแชร์ต่อได้ ซึ่งคุณสมบัติทั้งหมดเหล่านี้ไม่เพียงแค่ เพิ่มความน่าสนใจและคุณค่าของเนื้อหาที่นำ�เสนอให้มากขึ้นเท่านั้น ยังช่วยสร้างแรงจูงใจ

ในการซื้ อ สิ น ค้ า ของผู้ บ ริ โ ภค รวมไปถึ ง เพิ่ ม ความนิ ย มและทั ศ นคติ ด้ า นบวกของ ผูบ้ ริโภคทีม่ ตี อ่ แบรนด์ดว้ ยเช่นกัน ยกตัวอย่าง การสร้าง Content Marketing ที่จับใจ ผู้บริโภคผ่านโฆษณาหลายชิ้น อาทิ ผู้ชาย คนหนึ่งที่ขี่จักรยานไม่เป็น แต่ก็พยายาม ฝึกหัดให้ได้เพื่อที่จะสอนลูกชายขี่จักรยาน หรือเรือ่ งราวของคุณหมอทีต่ อบแทนบุญคุณ เจ้ า ของร้ า นก๋ ว ยเตี๋ ย วที่ เ คยช่ ว ยเขาไว้ ใ น วัยเด็ก ซึ่งสร้างจากเรื่องจริงที่โด่งดังทาง โซเชี ย ลมี เ ดี ย การสร้ า งเนื้ อ หาที่ กิ น ใจ ผู้บริโภคเหล่านี้ทำ�ให้ผู้คนจดจำ�เรื่องราวได้ นำ�ไปสูค่ วามประทับใจต่อตัวแบรนด์ในทีส่ ดุ นอกจากนี้ Content Marketing ยังถูกใช้ เป็นเครือ่ งมือสำ�คัญทีช่ ว่ ยสร้าง Traffic บน เว็บไซต์ สร้างความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างแบรนด์ กั บ ผู้ บ ริ โ ภคผ่ า นการนำ � เสนอเนื้ อ หาบน โซเชียลมีเดีย ซึง่ สามารถสร้างความสัมพันธ์ กับผู้บริโภคผ่านทาง Facebook ได้มาก ถึง 67% และ Twitter 53% อีกทั้งยังเป็น ส่วนสำ�คัญที่ช่วยเสริมให้การทำ�การตลาด บนโซเชียลมีเดียมีประสิทธิภาพเพิ่มมาก ยิ่งขึ้น และเป็นการลงทุนที่ประหยัดและ คุ้มค่ากว่าการทำ�โฆษณาในรูปแบบทั่วไป ที่ดึงดูดความสนใจของผู้บริโภคได้เพียงแค่ ระยะเวลาสั้นๆ เท่านั้น วิธีการและช่องทางที่ใช้ในการนำ�เสนอ Content Marketing ทีไ่ ด้รบั ความสนใจและ มีการใช้งานมากเป็นพิเศษ ได้แก่ โซเชียล มีเดีย (87%) ตามด้วยบทความบนเว็บไซต์ ของบริ ษั ท (81%) ทางอี เ มล (80%) บล็อกและอีเว้นต์ต่างๆ (76%) กรณีศึกษา (Case Study) และวิดโี อ (73%) เมือ่ เจาะจง ลงไปในกลุ่ ม การใช้ โ ซเชี ย ลมี เ ดี ย ที่ ไ ด้ รั บ ความนิ ย มสู ง สุ ด นั้ น พบว่ า แพลตฟอร์ ม ทีไ่ ด้รบั ความนิยมและมีการใช้งานมากทีส่ ดุ ในกลุม่ B2B ได้แก่ LinkedIn ทีม่ กี ารใช้งาน มากที่สุด คิดเป็นสัดส่วนสูงถึง 91% รอง ลงมา ได้แก่ Twitter (85%) Facebook

Content Marketing – The Strong Marketing Trend of 2014 Marketers from all over the world have agreed unanimously that, at present, Content Marketing is the most effective way to manage and convey the content of each brand. According to the Brightcove.com’s report, Content Marketing is the most popular marketing format used by B2B (Business to Business) group in order to reach out and acquire more clients, with the usage as high as 93%. It is expected that, in 2014, the popularity of Content Marketing will still be on the rise as 58% of B2B business operators plan to invest more in this type of marketing format. In general, Content Marketing is the means to express brand’s content and significance through various media such as email, social media or television advertisement, by using the “narrative” format to convey message to the consumers in order to foster “brand loyalty”. Though Content Marketing is not quite a novel idea to us, it is considered great marketing tactics at the moment. Therefore, the content itself is definitely the most important element of this type of marketing format. It must be unique and interesting. It must stand out against the crowd and definitely direct to the point in order to be shared on various social media websites. All of these do not only improve the content quality, but also motivate consumers’ purchasing power and improve brand loyalty. Take various touching television advertisements that contained impressive, even heart-wrenching content for examples. Some were adapted from the real-life event. These touching contents have proven successful in fostering good brand impression in customers’ mind. Furthermore, Content Marketing has been used to increase website’s traffic, foster good relationship between brand and consumers through the content provided on various social media websites. This way, the communication through Facebook alone could account for 67%, while Twitter is around 53%. In general, Content Marketing plays an important role in improving online marketing, especially through various social media websites. Besides,

it is more cost-effective than ordinary form of advertisement that attracts consumers’ attention for only a brief moment. The most interesting and frequently-used marketing channels for Content Marketing are social media (87%), corporate website (81%), email (80%), blogs and events (76%), case study and video (73%) respectively. When focusing on social media, the most popular and frequently-used websites by B2B are LinkedIn (91%), Twitter (85%), Facebook (81%) and YouTube (73%) respectively. Furthermore, Infographic is another interesting marketing format that has been used recently, with its rising popularity of 51% from 38% of last year. Even though, the popularity of Content Marketing has been on the rise, most B2B operators still struggle with inadequate time and budget, and the lack of interesting content. But with FTTx technology, it saves a lot of time, particularly in the real-time broadcasting television program.” Khun Vilasinee explained further about GMMZ broadcasting through FTTx system that “At present, we are producing approximately 10 television channels under GMM Grammy umbrella such as Fan TV, Bang Channel, Green Channel, ACTs Channel, GMM One, GTH On Air, Z’oke and O Shopping. Apart from that, there are still many foreign television channels that we obtained the rights to broadcast locally, which we have to dub and add subtitle in order to make them more appealing to local viewers. In the end, we have to combine every signal together at GMMZ’s MCR (GMMZ Master Control Room) and send them to Thaicom satellite

Using FTTx technology, therefore, enables GMMZ to provide premium quality programs to all viewers. “Normally, if we broadcast through public internet system, the loss of signal occurs frequently. Sometimes, there is not enough bandwidth for our usage. But when we switched to using FTTx technology, our signals has become more stable, due to much higher bandwidth. Therefore, there is no signal lost, resulting in a clear and uninterrupted viewing experience. “Thanks to Symphony for facilitating everything for us, especially when problems occurred, we are able to check them point-to-point upon receipt of complaints through our call center. Furthermore, we are so impressed with the vision of Symphony’s executives who are there for us and improve themselves all the time.” GMMZ is committed to provide premium quality viewing experience. In the near future, we plan to team up with FTTx network provider in order to improve our broadcasting technology and provide an ultimate viewing experience to our viewers. As for the direction of FTTx, it tends to grow exponentially in the very near future as demand already exists. Furthermore, there are several key players who are ready to team up in order to provide perfect broadcasting to all viewers. “We are starting to provide Fiber to the Home (FTTH) service, which we have to work with our network providers and content partners. We firmly believe that state-of-the-art technology must go together with high quality content. This is the key to win all viewers’ heart. During the first phase, we will start with condominium segment first, before expanding to other segments.” Before ending this interview, Khun Vilasinee also stressed the importance of improving the content quality together with state-of-the-art broadcasting technology in order to provide the ultimate viewing experience to all viewers. เคยสงสัยหรือไม่วา่ ท�ำไมเราจึงต้องการ ใช้ ง านอิ น เทอร์ เ น็ ต ที่ มี ค วามเร็ ว เพิ่ ม ขึ้ น เรื่ อ ยๆ นั่ น เป็ น เพราะทุ ก วั น นี้ เ รามี ก าร ส่งผ่านข้อมูลข่าวสารบนโลกออนไลน์ใน ปริมาณมากขึ้นทั้งจากการดาวน์โหลดภาพ เพลง วิดีโอ ซึ่งมีความละเอียดสูงและขนาด ไฟล์ค่อนข้างใหญ่ ท�ำให้หลายคนรู้สึกว่า อินเทอร์เน็ตทีใ่ ช้อยูใ่ นปัจจุบนั เริม่ ช้า ไม่ทนั ใจ จึงถึงเวลาแล้วที่เราต้องมองหาเทคโนโลยี ใหม่ๆ เพือ่ ตอบโจทย์ไลฟ์สไตล์ของคนในยุค ปัจจุบัน ท�ำความรู้จักกับ FTTx FTTx (Fiber to the x) คือเทคโนโลยี อินเทอร์เน็ตผ่านสายเคเบิลใยแก้วน�ำแสง หรือทีน่ ยิ มเรียกว่า สายไฟเบอร์ออพติก โดย สายไฟเบอร์ออพติกที่ว่านี้จะมีคุณสมบัติ คล้ายท่อขนาดใหญ่ เป็นสื่อส่งสัญญาณ (Transmission) ในการรับส่งข้อมูลจาก สถานที่ต้นทางไปยังอาคารบ้านเรือนของ ผูใ้ ช้บริการ ซึง่ ติดตัง้ ONU (Optical Network Unit) ไว้เพือ่ รับและกระจายสัญญาณจากสาย ไฟเบอร์ออพติกไปยังอุปกรณ์อเิ ล็กทรอนิกส์ ภายในอาคารหรือที่พักอาศัย ชื่อของ FTTx (Fiber to the x) นั้น หมายถึงการส่งสัญญาณผ่านสายไฟเบอร์ ออพติกไปยังทีใ่ ดทีห่ นึง่ ซึง่ ใช้ x แทนสถานที่ ทีไ่ ปถึง ดังนัน้ การให้บริการโครงข่ายไฟเบอร์ ออพติ ก ในสถานที่ ที่ ต ่ า งกั น ก็ จ ะท� ำ ให้ ชื่อเรียกต่อท้ายแตกต่างกันด้วย เช่น หาก ติดตั้งโครงข่ายนี้ไปยังบ้านเรือนก็เรียกว่า FTTH (Fiber to the Home) ไปยังอาคารต่างๆ เรียกว่า FTTB (Fiber to the Building) หรือในส�ำนักงานก็จะเรียกว่า FTTO (Fiber to the Office) เป็นต้น

บอกลาสายทองแดงและเครือข่าย ADSL อินเทอร์เน็ตที่เราใช้ในอาคารหรือตาม บ้านแต่เดิมนั้น แทบทั้งหมดเป็นการรับส่ง ข้ อ มู ล ผ่ า นลวดทองแดงเล็ ก ๆ ในสาย โทรศั พ ท์ ซึ่ ง จะส่ ง ข้ อ มู ล ได้ ที ล ะไม่ ม าก ต่อมาจึงมีการพัฒนาเทคโนโลยี ADSL เพือ่ ช่วยในการบีบอัดข้อมูลให้มีขนาดเล็กลง และส่งผ่านสายทองแดงได้รวดเร็วขึ้น ด้วย ความเร็วสูงสุด 20 Mbps แต่ดูเหมือนว่า ความเร็วระดับนี้เริ่มจะไม่เพียงพอต่อการ ใช้งานในปัจจุบัน FTTx จึงเป็นเทคโนโลยีที่ก�ำลังเข้ามา แทนที่ ADSL เพราะมีแบนด์วดิ ท์ (Bandwidth) มากกว่า สามารถรับส่งข้อมูลด้วยความเร็ว สูงสุดถึง 1 Tbps (1 เทอราบิทต่อวินาที) ความเร็วระดับนี้สามารถรองรับการใช้งาน หลากหลายได้ทนั ใจ ทันเวลา เพราะสามารถ ดาวน์โหลดภาพยนตร์ 1 เรื่องได้ภายใน ไม่กี่วินาที ในแง่ของความเสถียรในการรับส่งข้อมูล เทคโนโลยี ADSL เมือ่ อยูห่ า่ งจาก Node ใน ระยะทางตัง้ แต่ 5 กิโลเมตรขึน้ ไป ความเร็ว ในการรับส่งข้อมูลจะลดลงเรื่อยๆ ต่างจาก FTTx ที่สามารถใช้งานด้วยความเร็วคงที่ ในรัศมี 20 กิโลเมตรจาก Node ของผู้ให้ บริการ ซึ่งอาจกล่าวได้ว่าระยะทางไม่มีผล ต่อความเร็วในการรับส่งข้อมูลผ่านเครือข่าย FTTx เลยก็ว่าได้ FTTx เชื่อมต่อติดชีวิตดิจิตอล FTTx จ� ำ เป็ น มากส� ำ หรั บ ไลฟ์ ส ไตล์ สมัยใหม่ที่ผู้ใช้งานอินเทอร์เน็ตต่างบริโภค ข่าวสาร ข้อมูล และแอพพลิเคชัน่ ขนาดใหญ่ ขึ้นเรื่อยๆ จากที่เคยดูคลิปวิดีโอสั้นๆ ผ่าน ทางอิ น เทอร์ เ น็ ต ก็ เ ริ่ ม ดาวน์ โ หลดไฟล์ ภาพยนตร์ฉบับเต็ม และไฟล์ภาพยนตร์ นั้นๆ ก็เริ่มมีความคมชัดมากขึ้นในระดับ HD (High-Definition) ก่อนจะค่อยๆ ก้าวสู่

A Fiber Optic Network that Connects People in the Digital World Have you ever wondered why do we have to increase internet speed every now and then? This is because the size of transferred information keeps increasing all the time. Retrieve video and audio files for instance. That’s why we need to look for new technology to transfer those files effectively at minimum time as possible. Get to know FTTx FTTx (Fiber to the x) is an internet technology using fiber-optic cable network to transmit data by serving as transmitter. These fiber-optic cables would transmit data from an operator’s central office to the subscribers’ homes which are required to have Optical Network Unit (ONU) installed. The ONU would transform incoming optic signals into electronics at customers’ premise in order to provide telecommunications service through this means. Therefore, FTTx (Fiber to the x) is the transmission of information through fiber-optic cables with x represents the destination of the recipients which comes in various forms such as FTTH (Fiber to the Home), FTTB (Fiber to the Building) or FTTO (Fiber to the Office). New technology to replace ADSL network At present, we are using ADSL network to transmit all information, which could be done through copper telephone lines. With data compression technology, ADSL enables faster transmission at the maximum speed of 20 Mbps. But considering an increasing size of information being transferred every day, this speed is no longer adequate for day-to-day usage. Therefore, FTTx has emerged as an ADSL replacement due to its broader bandwidth that could transmit information at the maximum speed of 1 Tbps (1 Terabit per second). With this speed, you could download 1 movie within only a few seconds. Let’s take a look at the stability of both technologies. One major benefit of ADSL technology is that the transmitting speed is inversely proportional to the distance from the operator’s node, while that of FTTx remains stable within 20 km radius of operator’s node. In other words, distance does not affect the transmitting speed of FTTx technology at all.

Connect lives in digital era with FTTx In the internet era, the size of content and application keeps increasing all the time, watching movie for instance. Previously, we got used to watching only short video clips. But with an increasing internet speed, we are able to download and watch the whole movie. Until now, technology has fully advanced to the point that it enables us to watch HD (High-Definition) movie, with the possibility of watching 4K or Ultra High Definition movie, which has 4 times higher resolution than Full HD video, in the very near future. Apart from that, FTTx could offer various usages such as triple play multimedia whether it is in terms of Video Conference, Video on Demand, or E-Learning. Such process is called candid photography. Due to the lack of subject knowledge prior to the photo-taking session, the quality and natural feelings of candid Photography largely depends

on the very moment we capture the photo. We might need to capture as many pictures as we could in order to get the right one. The trick is using telephoto lens, with 70 - 200 mm zooming range, would be the best way to capture candid photograph; while setting other features to automatic mode i.e. focus, aperture width, shutter speed and white balance. Sometimes, we might need to set our camera to P (Program) and let it do the job automatically while we focus on the shutter pressing only. The anticipation is also important as it would tremendously help us capture the perfect moment on time. Sometimes, using wide angle lens would greatly help. But more importantly, in order to convey positive message of the picture, the photographer must respect the privacy of the object and adhere to photographer’s work ethic. But above all else, please bear in mind that candid photograph must be fun and relaxing. Otherwise it would sadly turn out to be a fake up candid. JANUARY MARCH 2014

Most people often say that if you want to see the old Chiang Rai of the past, you will have to visit Kengtung in order to experience it as two towns have striking resemblance in many ways such as ethnicity, dialect, culture, and architectural beauty. This edition of Bon Voyage would like to open an enchanting world of Kengtung for you to explore. The most convenient way to visit Kengtung is by a road trip, which takes about 3 hours from Amphoe Mae Sai, Chiang Rai Province. Kengtung is an enchanting little town of Shan State, Myanmar. It is, according to the slogan, a home of “3 mountains, 7 villages, 9 swamps and 12 gates”. This lovely little town is surrounded by 3 mountains that are, namely, Chom Mon with 218 ft. high Rubber tree as a symbol, Chom Sak where huge Buddha statue is located, and Chom Kam where ancient Buddha relics is located. Apart from being surrounded by 3 mountains, Kengtung also comprises of various ethnic groups, with Tai Yai as a majority, and is surrounded by 7 villages namely Chiangngam, Chiangchan, Chianglan, Chiangkhun, Chiangin, Chiangyeun and Chiangjin. As for swamps, in the distant past, there were 9 large swamps in Kengtung. But now, there is only one left in the town center that is called Nong Tung. This is the same with the gates of Kengtung. In the past, there were 12 gates around Kengtung. But now, there is only one left which is called Pa Daeng gate. Apart from that, there are many ancient temples with exquisite Mandalay art to explore. For all shoppers, you will never want to miss Kad Luang market that offers vast varieties of yummy food and cheap goods to choose from. It opens from 6 a.m. - 12 noon. If you are lucky, you might get loads of chic decorative items for your home-sweet-home.

Apart from the aforementioned tourist attractions, there are several other destinations worth visiting that are the Prince’s carriage, Field Marshal Phin Choonhavan residence, peonies in full bloom etc. Only 3 days and 2 nights might not suffice to explore the lovely town of Kengtung.
