Lineaverde is Italy’s leading horticultural magazine. For 42 years it has provided a useful source of information for those working in the sector. It publishes articles on: growing techniques, arboriculture, botany, running horticultural businesses, landscape gardening, ecology; moreover it provides technical, commercial and statistical facts and figures. Lineaverde International is the international edition of the magazine transleted in English. Its formation began with the idea of promoting Italian horticulture abroad. It is sent once a year to the main European growers. It is found to be the quickest and most efficent way to inform the world about horticulture in Italy, it being one of the richest producers in Europe (23 percent of European horticultural production ) for volume, quality and variety. Italy is the most commercially interesting horticultural producer in Europe in particular for its wealth of variety. Cut flowers, house, garden and public park plants make up the vast assortment available and this is enriched by Italy’s own exotic production of ornamental citrus in terracotta pots, olives of every shape and kind and the most unusual Mediterranean species.
Lineaverde est la revue de floriculture et arboriculture leader en Italie. Depuis bientôt 42 ans elle est un instrument de travail précieux pour tous les opérateurs du secteur. Elle traite des arguments suivants: les techniques de culture, l’arboriculture, la phytopathologie, la gestion d’une pépinière, le paysagisme, l’écologie; elle divulgue en outre des informations techniques, sur les marchandises, ainsi que les statistiques intéressant le secteur. Lineaverde International, qui est la version internationale de Lineaverde, a été conçu afin d’assurer la promotion des pépinières italiennes à l’étranger. Elle est expédiée à des opérateurs européens triés sur le volet. Cette publication est la façon la plus rapide et efficace d’approfondir la connaissance de la production italienne, l’une des plus riches d’Europe quant au volume (23% de la production floricole et arboricole européenne), à la qualité et à l’assortiment. Biodiversity and quality of ornamental plants for a new nursery The protection of plant biodiversity is reflected in a number of international and national laws to which the nurseryman must refer and draw innovative strength and guidance for the market. Today more than ever are required plants that must have an ornamental value as well as they must be ecologically compatible with the new scenarios such as reduced water consumption, hardiness, adaptability to the environment in which they will be planted, and the ability to absorb carbon dioxide and fine particles.

iodiversity is widely recognized as a natural biological heritage, like the cultural and landscaping heritage. The awareness of this heritage has reawakened general interest and many activities around the issues of conservation, improvement and propagation of plant material that are nursery activities, both on the part of public institutions and private companies. Biodiversità is
the Italian word for biodiversity, which is the contraction of the expression biological diversity, or better, biological variety. Biodiversity includes the variety of living things that inhabit the Earth and the complexity of ecological relationships that affect them. It represents the diversity among the ecosystems and species and, within each species, is expressed by the variability of individuals.
The biodiversity not only refers to the multiplicity of species but also to the genetic variation that occurs within species and the change in the communities and ecosystems in which these species belong. The protection of plant biodiversity is reflected in a number of international treaties and conventions, in Community directives

and regulations, and in national and international laws to which the nurseryman must refer and draw innovative strength and guidance for the market. To meet the new demands of consumers, requiring plants of ornamental value but also ecologically compatible with new scenarios more and more attentive to environmental sustainability and landscape architectural compatibility, now on a closer horizon as the reduced water consumption, hardiness and adaptability to the environment in which they will be planted. Offering ornamental plants for the construction of parks and gardens but also simply for the ornament of the balcony or the entrance of the house, biodiversity can be a real and new competitive advantage. An advantage able to ensure a new sustainable development for the ornamental nursery, corroborated by the ability to adopt business and crop management techniques inspired to the minimization of energy consumption: the reduction of heating costs, the energy for farming operations including irrigation, the reduced usage of those means of production with higher energy consumption,
and reducing the movement of plants within the company and of secondary materials outside the company. In short, there is no room for improvisation and nursery activity requires specific, ongoing professional training of operators and the support of specialized and skilled technicians in the field. It is clear how central is the role of the human resource to meet the challenges and overcome them, more of the investment in assets, of which there is certainly a need, but in a different scale of priorities. For these reasons we believe that biodiversity, a sustainable development of the nursery, and landscape quality must be seen as a whole because without biodiversity it is hard to make a good landscape, you do not have the main source of production innovation in the field of ornamental nurseries and it is difficult to think of sustainable and balanced development: without sustainable development it is difficult to imagine landscapes of quality in the future. For the world of nursery, the rediscovering of the role of knowledge of landscapes and territories
The future: invest in the green • The nursery helps to mitigate the effects of climate change on the territory (one hectare nursery in container absorbs about 30,000 kg / year of CO2). • The realization of ornamental greenery makes "sustainable" new urban and industrial sites by improving the quality of the territory landscape (a tree can absorb around 700 kg of CO2 during its life cycle).

to find the botanical peculiarities, and checking their productive and ornamental potential, becomes a key business activity for innovation and upgrading of the production offer. At the same time, the knowledge of the ecological basis of the landscape becomes an essential moment for the formation of the modern environmentally friendly nursery and producer of plants for quality landscapes, but also to conduct quality nurseries in high quality environment, cultivated with the so-called "modern" principles, but which are actually ancient, from the proper agronomic science that is at the basis of the sustainability of crops. The quality of the landscape and the different landscapes, both urban and rural, depends primarily on the availability and the ability to make better use of the suitable plant product for that environment and function. This is the reason why, even in the design and construction of green and landscape, there is no room for improvisation and the natural elements should not be bent to the will of the designer, but conversely he must know the principal features in order to use them at best getting the desired aesthetic and functional results. The search for innovation in the tradition and in-depth knowledge of the various opportunities that environmental diversity present in different territories is thus the basis for a sustainable development of nursery production that can offer on the market a number of plants, tailored to different types of environment, to make quality landscapes and even increasing plant diversity, which is the best investment in innovation for the nursery. ■

The IFLA Congress in Turin The 53rd congress of IFLA (International Federation of Landscape Architects) was held in Turin on 20-2122 April. An extraordinary event held in Italy for anyone involved in Landscape Architecture. The photos are taken by the acts of the IFLA conference.
I
n recent years the Landscape Architecture has experienced an exponential growth at all levels: the quality and quantity of projects, the widespread interest, the thorough theoretical elaboration, the awareness of public administrators, and perhaps even more. The IFLA Congress held in Turin from April 20 to 22 at the Lingotto, was a world events that registered and returned to the general public the high level of quality achieved by our discipline. I have attended these events for decades. I started with the famous IFLA Congress in Cambridge in 1979: it was celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of the British Landscape Institute and the founder of IFLA, Sir Joffrey Gellicoe, opened the Congress. I can still recall the first images projected from a very erudite report, as well as others that have followed. Then there was Paris, Copenhagen, and other similar events, but I can say with conviction that the Turin Congress was something special and extraordinary, a top-ranking for the global landscape. was palpable everywhere, thanks to an exceptional offer of scientific and professional documentation. Certainly, the official speakers - those that my colleagues prefer to call "keynote speaker" have left their mark with deep contributions. And there's more. If you walked into a random section, you could listen to very interesting speeches: fresh, modern, never dull or improvised, all related to everyday reality. The Landscaping as a discipline that responds to people's needs, to the contemporary society as it is structured: answers that are becoming ever more diverse. I could mention countless examples, but I will only say a few: the transformation from a parking area with trees to ornamental agriculture, quality vineyards according to tradition, the urban agriculture of Rotterdam in abandoned areas, the countryside as a garden, the landscape's identity, the cultural water landscape in Chile, the teaching of Burle Marx in Venezuela for the botanical gardens in Maracaibo, the Mexican eco-tourism to defend the land-

scape, the anarchic streetscape as a rebellion against the modern urban aesthetic in Taiwan. A myriad of inspirations that is hard to list, but simply to remember. Fortunately, the Proceedings are published(*) and are a priceless heritage: in 500 pages we have the successful synthesis of each contribution, and a comprehensive picture of the state of the art. Certainly, the Acts do not contain all
that the Landscape Architecture in the world has produced in recent years, but from that big tome it is possible to see the vast spectrum that our discipline covers over the level of quality reached. Above all, what has prevailed is the new approach to the landscape, to the new themes, to the fast transformations of the landscape that create social as well as


environmental problems, the new urban dynamics that impose sustainability not as a slogan but as an urgent necessity for the very survival of settled populations. It was also an open congress with the desire to listen to everyone
and everything that affects our profession, it is not by chance that the speech of Carlo Petrini, founder of Slow Food, was very appreciated and applauded, it could not be otherwise: his battle is in perfect harmony with the

theme of the conference. Petrini criticized the trend of television cooking programs, asserting the centrality of the role of women both in producing healthy food and in knowing how to transform and consequently protecting the quality landscape that still survives; he also cited, with heartfelt emotional involvement, the traditions of his Langhe that have been passed down to us with their striking beauty. This was echoed by Pietro Laureano: with his research carried out on behalf of UNESCO on the traditional African agriculture he has shown, through a series of practical experiences, that the new techniques are ineffective as well as harmful to the African economy and that many humanitarian aid for developing countries with a huge resource commitment, are often devastating because they never rely on local traditions sedimented over the centuries. In this framework the presence of the authoritative philosopher Raffaele Milani is justified: he illustrated his reflections upon the aesthetic value of landscapes, another weapon in defence of landscape protection. Of course we are pleased to report that Ilaria Borletti Buitoni, Undersecretary with proxy for landscape, has been at the IFLA congress on behalf of our government. She has made a passionate speech more as an expert than as a politician. Obviously, the reports of the militants landscapers have traced the cornerstones of the state of the art. China has recently taken part in the world of landscape, with its peculiar problems that the West cannot even imagine, first of all the issues regarding air and water pollution. The answer that my colleague Yu gives to these complex issues is otherwise simple: learn from farmers and traditional farming. We must recreate the harmony between land and people - says Yu -. In my projects, I apply this thesis on the choice of materials; they are often found on site, like scaffoldings made of bamboo: a cheap, compatible, sustainable material. Sometimes they are like the modern glass and steel; you have to adapt to the region, never upset nature, and then leave it to her." See his draft of Shanghaoi Houtan, a unique experience, a green ecology and biological area used to clarify water that becomes an occasion for urban renewal through these "natural sponges"and an opportunity to achieve an accessible urban park. We are sorry not to mention here all the masters of the landscape that were at this event, and they were many: with their reports, they put the focus on aspects of highest importance. A pleasure for those who love landscaping. If we want now to emphasize the specificity of this conference, I will quote the words of the current president of IFLA, Kathryn Moore, who noted that nowadays the landscape cannot have the same direction and the same disciplinary and professional content in every part the world, but

we must be aware that its diversity is closely linked to the features and problems of each country. The same concept was reiterated by Simon Bell, who was for many years the president of Eclas, the organization of students and professors of Landscape Architec-
ture: even schools are strongly diversified according to national traditions and trying to omologate teaching would be impossible. The Congress was not only a debate but several awards to students of Landscape Architecture who participated in specific com-

petitions dedicated to them were delivered. The Prize Geoffrey Jellicoe was awarded to Peter Latz, an esteemed German colleague of mine, known around the world for the industrial redevelopment of the Ruhr area. Many side events, guided tours, concerts and much more as it happens in these cases. Personally I had the fortune to visit Villar Perosa, the private garden of the Agnelli family, designed by Russell Page, a fine work of art where you may have the joy of access in these exceptional cases only. Fascinating! A masterpiece! Let me conclude with some very personal notes, only forgivable because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m getting old... The new AIAPP managers, the new generation that has emerged in recent years, made up by a lot of our students - even if everything

has changed, the landscape has changed, our work has changed they remain linked to the teaching of the past and to whom this teaching is, and none of the old managers has been forgotten. The Presidency Council has not 'scrapped' anyone: in fact, each of us has tried to assign a role in the congress, strongly emphasizing the continuity, giving space to the masters in an ideal relay, as Guido Ferrara has well summarized in his message. At the IFLA Congress of Florence in 1996 "we set out - wrote Ferrara - to explore a mission impossible, namely to build and manage the Paradise on Earth. The theme for debate was indeed "Paradise on Earth: The gardens of the XXI Century", with a direct reference to the 'areas cultivated to perfection', both in small scale than in vast territories. This year in Turin the theme is "Tasting the landscape" in which the message conveyed by the same 'space cultivated to perfection' becomes evaluation and

appreciation of the senses: in the many corners of paradise scattered throughout the Earth we produce and share the wealth and beauty of the "nature that becomes thought" as Rosario Assunto remembered us years ago." The IFLA Congress in Turin is an unforgettable experience for
those who were there as a spectator or as a speaker, but certainly it will be for those who planned and managed it. That's why I would like to end with the beautiful words uttered by Anna Letizia Monti on behalf of the Presidency Council and by all those who

New Customs Codes for ornamental plants are entered into force The European legislation which provides new customs codes for flower products is in force from the 1st January 2016. Some important issues related to the administration and the bureaucratic aspects that companies have to deal with have already emerged. Here are the tips of ANVE (National Association of Nurserymen Exporters).

rom the entry into force of the new customs code on the nursery industry, a strong process of change in the companies' business models has begun. From the 1st January 2016, the new EU regulations that provides for new codes that have associated the flower products are in place. A few days from the implementation, a number of major issues related to management and bureaucratic aspects that companies face have emerged. "We will need a period of harmonization throughout Europe for the nursery sector to adapt commented Marco Cappellini, President of the National Association of Nurserymen Exporters ANVE - but the new codification will give a better possibility to control and study, even on a statistic level, the trade flows related to these types of plants. It is clear that this change will lead to huge benefits to companies in the market analysis, in product marketing, and production planning". The proposal for modification that led to the new customs codes of chapter 6 has been submitted to the European Commission by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, assisted by ISMEA (Institute for

Agricultural and Food Market Services), the Customs Agency and ISTAT (Italian National Institute of Statistics), at the request of the technical Board of Chain Nursery Gardening. In the process for the preparation of the official document intervened the European Association of Nurseries ENA at the request of his Italian partner ANVE (National Association of Nurserymen Exporters), Ancef (National Association of Traders Exporters Flowers), partner of Union Fleur, and Copa-Cogeca (Association of European farmers and the Association of European cooperatives). ble to check more accurately the flowers flows (with the introduction of the buttercup), of plants divided between fruit trees, Citrus, evergreen and deciduous trees and, among these, to determine the distinction between bare root and container/clod. Furthermore, for better information for analysis of the trade in plant products, it will also be shown the number of units rather than the weight of the plants, trees and shrubs (excluding code 06029050 "Other outdoor plants" for which it is uses only the weight), the buttercup (code 06031920) and other flowers (code 06031970). All this is part of the Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/1754 of 6 October 2015 amending the Annex I to Regulation (EEC) No. 2658/87 on the tariff and statistical nomenclature and the Com-
mon Customs Tariff (Official Journal of the European Union 30/10/2015). You can download the entire document in Italian on the website eur-lex.europa.eu (by entering in the search field the measure number 2015/1754), with smartphones or tablet via the QR code shown on this page. As stated in point 1 of the notes to Section II of the aforementioned Regulation (p. 87), "...this chapter covers only the goods (including vegetable seedlings) provided routinely by horticulturists, nurserymen and florists for planting or ornament. Nevertheless, it does not include potatoes, onions, shallots, garlic or other products of Chapter 7." This means that the use of the new customs codes and the indication of the number of pieces (where required) is compulsory for all the above categories as
from 1 January 2016. Pending official documentation from the European Commission, the parties involved (mainly ANVE) have prepared a guide addressed to all manufacturers within the State Members to give them tips on how to classify and enter plant products in the appropriate customs codes. The guide can be requested by contacting the ANVE Secretariat (segreteria@anve.it). In this regard, given the number of help requests on the administrative and bureaucratic requirements received from companies, ANVE asked the authorities to organize an information/training workshop to give all the explanations of the case and which is expected in the first days of March. The contribution of the Bank of Germplasm to biodiversity W For many years the Experimental Centre for Nursery in Pistoia has built and managed a wide collection of ornamental trees and shrubs known as the "Germplasm Bank".
e are living in the socalled "Decade of Biodiversity" (2011-2020), as it was declared by the UN to emphasize the importance that this issue holds for all humanity. The extinction of many species is a serious threat for the biological diversity of ecosystems and the environment in which we live. Moreover, a growing number of species, often confined in small niches, has a high probability of extinction, while an increasingly man-made environment undergoes a continuous reduction in the number of species that composes it. It is clear that climate change contributes significantly to make the situation worse, and it is one of the biggest threat to biodiversity. To preserve this resource every contribution is valuable and appreciate, every available resource is needed. Therefore we thought

to the vast collections of ornamental plants, composed in Pistoia in recent decades, that are little known but which we believe they can make their contribution to the enrichment of the biodiversity of the new green areas.
An ever current initiative For many years the Experimental Centre for Nursery in Pistoia has actually built and managed a wide collection of ornamental trees and shrubs known as the "Germplasm Bank". It all started in the early Eighties, when the Institute for the Propagation of the Wood Species of CNR of Florence planted a collection of the most interesting ornamental nursery conifers with the aim to be a primary source of verified and certified propagating material. This initiative was resumed in the late Nineties, when they were issued some EEC guidelines on the sale of material for the

propagation of ornamental plants which imposed strict controls of genetic and phytosanitary features. Thus the Germplasm Bank was born: in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture at the University of Florence and with the approval of the Ministry of Agriculture at that time, it was implanted in three further batch. The first in 1996, to complete the collection of conifers and start the trees' one. The second batch in 1997, to achieve the collection of ornamental shrubs, and the third in 2000, to integrate and extend the trees. In the meantime, other thematic collections had been planted in collaboration with the industry operators, such as those of Wisteria and Liquidambar, or linked to specific events, as the Exhibition of Mediterranean plants in 1999. Thereafter, other collections were realized in relation to specific events, as the various editions of "Vestire il Paesaggio" ("Styling Landscape"), to enrich and update the types of plants in the collection that, as the nursery sector, it is constantly changing. Currently, it covers an area of around 12 hectares with more than 3,000 specimens of 600 species and varieties. Finally, the Germplasm Bank has
recently added a wide new collection of medicinal plants, consisting of more than 4,000 potted plants belonging to about 700 species and varieties. This has been entrusted by IPMT (Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions), which is based at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. Together with them, and in collaboration with UNISER (University Centre of Pistoia), we are trying to achieve an experimental station and a park for scientific and educational purposes on medicinal plants. After all these years the initiative of the Germplasm Bank always
proves itself valid and, to its primary purpose, which was to preserve the rich genetic heritage of ornamental outdoor plants to make it available to operators, scholars and the public, many others had followed. In particular, concerning the modern biodiversity conservation objectives, the Bank is surely able to give a considerable contribution. In this regard we suggest you some examples of how certain thematic collections, gathered at the Centre, can make a valuable contribution to enrich the range of ornamental plants used in the new green areas. Since it is very usual, both for habit or following the wave of some fashion, to use always the same plants. Instead, you can greatly increase the range of species and varieties to plant, also taking inspiration from our collections.
The Prunus laurocerasus collection We can begin with dusting off an old collection of Prunus laurocera-


sus, dating back to the Eighties, which is a classic hedge shrub. Although it is a bit out of fashion at the moment, it always has a fair application of the most modern varieties only like'Etna' and 'NovitĂ ' that seem to be more resistant to frost and diseases. However, among the traditional varieties preserved in the collection there are some with peculiar features that could be useful in the uses of this plant, which is always an 'evergreen'. These are catalogued according to the growth and size of the leaves in order to be inserted appropriately in plantings. Among these, there are varieties of great production like the 'Caucasian', the 'Herbergii', the 'Latifolia Bertini', or medium production like the 'Reynvaanii', the 'Rotundifolia', the 'Schipkaensis', or 'Bruanti' with its assurgenct grow, as are always very valid the compact varieties 'Otto Luyken' and 'Zabeliana'. It could be possible to grow these old varieties again to offer plants with a more appropriate production, according to their intended use in the planned project, without being forced to drastically prune the hedges of laurel that grow more than desired.
The Wisterias collection Among other thematic collections, those of Wisteria and Liquidambar were created in collaboration with Francesco Vignoli, a very famous and passionate nursery worker from Pistoia, who deserve our thanks also because it continues to treat and cherish them personally. One of the main purposes is to put in order the nomenclature of Wisteria, which is very problematic for the presence of a huge number of synonyms and erro-

neous attributions. In the collection, uncertain varieties can be compared directly with those already catalogued (over 30) for consistency. Wisteria (Wisteria) is one of the most hardy and easy to grow climbing plants for low maintenance gardens, but it has an amazing flowering. At first glance they may look all the same, but instead they offer an incredible variety. On the base on the structure of the inflorescence, we can easily recognize the different species: W. brachybotrys with short and stocky racemes and very large single flowers, W. sinensis with racemes of intermediate length and very scaled flowers along the spine, W. floribunda with longer racemes and its smaller individual flowers. Other types are W. floribunda Macrobotrys with its inflorescences up to a meter long and W. taiwanensis (Millettia), also known as summer wisteria, with small and erect inflorescences. The latter, by the way, has won many international awards for its beauty and peculiarity. Besides the structure of the flower,

wisterias offer lots of different shades as well, from white to lilacpink to dark purple and purpleblue. They are not all the same as it looks, but it is possible to choose from a very wide range. Therefore we suggest you not to choose any wisteria, but to pick a specific variety that meets your needs and taste. Furthermore, with the help of special facilities, they can be used to realize pergolas, gazebos, arches, up to real green walls, which are now in vogue.

The Liquidambar collection.
The Liquidambar collection The Liquidambar (American storax) is a highly sought-after ornamental tree. The name means "liquid amber", because of the resin that produces if cut which was already being used by the American Indians. It is native to the south east of the United States. Its ornamental qualities are appreciated in all seasons. The species L. styraciflua, with all its selections, is the most common; we have collected a dozen. We also have the L. formosana from China and the L. orientalis from Anatolia. Until a few years ago in nurseries one could find the generic species only. Recently, some other varieties had become popular; still, there are many others, very beautiful and different, which distinguish themselves not only for the foliage colors, but also for the shape of the leaf. Among which we recommend the L. styraciflua 'Worplesdon' with a very compact and assurgenct habit and deeply incised and toothed leaves. her beauty, hardiness and excellent placement in the green spaces. However, there are varieties of L. styraciflua with a compact and globular habit as the 'Gum Ball', some varieties with variegated leaves, or others with a peculiar corky bark like the 'Skia'. But in addition to L. styraciflua, L. orientalis with small and jagged leaves is very rustic, as well as the L. formosana with the three-pointed unbroken leaf, of which there are also some varieties such as 'Monticola'. So, as we have seen, there is a wide choice of shapes and colors of this beautiful and versatile tree, which is not valued as it deserves.
The collection of medicinal plants Finally we can give you some ideas also from the latest collection of Medicinal Plants. When you consider that those already collected belong to more than 115 different botanical families, it soon becomes clear that they can give great contribution to biodiversity. Among these there are many who are spontaneous in our area,
growing without problems, however there are selections with very peculiar ornamental qualities, which make them more attractive and unusual. Without going to look for strange and unusual plants, we want to suggest some very common plants that everybody knows, such as the sages. In this regard, to go beyond the usual Salvia splendens, or similar varieties, we can suggest Salvia leucantha with its astonishing flower-


ing that is also quite rustic. A plant that was so dear to Peter Porcinai, but it is hard to understand why it is so difficult to find and so little used now. There are two varieties of the very common Salvia officinalis: S. officinalis 'Purpurea' is a perennial evergreen shrub with elongated red-purple foliage, and S. officinalis 'Tricolor' which is more compact, with gray-green

aromatic leaves edged in creamy white, pink and purple. Both are very decorative and rustic at the same time in our climate, they are also suitable to the usual culinary uses, which is good, but nevertheless they are seldom used. Remaining among the aromatic, we propose a more appropriate use of the simple and intelligent rosemary, which we have more than 18 different varieties in our collection that could give you many solutions. For example, those with the biggest growing and with more lush vegetation can be used to make unusual hedges of great effect (the varieties with biggest growing are 'Israeli Commercial', 'Gorizia', 'Tuscan Blue' or 'Sissinghurst'). Those with a compact habit, crawling or falling can be used instead for scented borders or covering walls and escarpments (dwarf or creeping varieties are for example 'Boule', 'Farinole' or 'Pointe Du Raz'). These plants are very easy to maintain, they also adapt themselves to the poorest and driest land, but the result, as well as functional, has a significant aesthetic value. Again we do not recommend taking a rosemary at random, but choose carefully one of the many beautiful

varieties existing which apparently they may seem all very similar, but in fact they offer different features of the leaves, more or less expanded, of the flowers, with different shades of colour and often punctuated with contrasting colours, or of posture, for different uses. The collection of medicinal plants could give you several ideas, as we have seen, in relation to the reduced need for water, fertilizer and maintenance care. These are plants that usually live in the wild on marginal and fallow lands, the poor rains of the Mediterranean climate are enough for them. Many of them have good ornamental features and are perfect for low-irrigation, low-maintenance gardens: these are increasingly required as a result of climate change. Therefore, we invite you to be curious and never tire of looking for new plants from the rich and abundant natural heritage we have. It may be good for certain plant diseases Some examples are provided by observations made in the current year of foliage and branches of lime trees, poplars (especially Lombardy poplars), oaks, chestnuts, pines, cypresses and other species: the development of the insect Cameraria ohridella, often in a considerable amount on the foliage of many horse chestnuts, now seems to be more contained.

n Italy, during the summer of 2015 it was a long period with very high temperatures which sometimes reached 40°C producing high and frequent thermal shocks, often accompanied by windiness conditions. The rains, which in some areas were discharged with a certain intensity, have maintained a high degree of moisture in the atmosphere. This climatic type, adding to the high level of environmental pollution, has affected the natural environment to the point of favoring a more rapid decay of the first vegetation of the year, so that different species of plants had already in summer the symptoms of a scarce, weak vegetation, with a tendency towards premature yellowing, loss of leaves and desiccation. At the same time, it was an increase of the typical foliar burns, mostly marginal, on lime trees and horse chestnuts, or various types of disease caused many times by root suffocation favored by the compactness of the soil, and various forms of cancer in poplar trees, especially Populus nigra 'Italica' (Lombardy poplar), some conifers, linden, oak, horse chestnut and others, although to a lesser extent. All this has caused, at the end of the season, the partial early fall of the leaves and an appearance of a much more widespread dry aspect compared to other years, while a large part of the leaves still attached strangely tends to remain on for longer than usual. Obviously, the seasonal pattern described, together with the increasing degree of environmental pollution, provoked an unexpected awakening and an accelerated spread of uncommon and uncon-

sidered pathological forms as the aforementioned cancers in branches, root systems, cortical and collar areas, or the abnormal outbreaks of some insects, especially aphids and scale insects on some conifers (cypresses and pines).
A special case personally verified On the other hand, there are situations that seems to be still little known to many operators in the industry, on which a less rigid climate that in the past may have produced some benefit on the potential containment of some pathological forms - not yet officially recognized - that the particular and intense summer weather factor may have caused. It is, however, a logic that must be
seen under the perspective that all the things affecting the great universal home where we live are governed by an infinite set of small balances, each of which is supported by forces that tend to return to normal, even the worst things. One of these natural balancing attempts is, starting from the beginning of the summer season, the possible reduction in attacks by the larval form of the lepidopteran insect Cameraria ohridella on the leaves of horse chestnut trees that, in that period of the year, are always very aggressive. This fact, certainly positive for the health of plants, can be determined by the destruction of a significant amount of larvae and pupae of the Lepidopteran's summer

generation from mid-July to midSeptember, caused by the high temperature that is formed on the leaves during periods of strong heat. The Lepidoptera are already found inside the transparent cells formed by the larvae at the end of the foliar galleries for both their transformation into pupae in the pre-hatching stage of adults of the last generations, and for the preservation of those pupae in the longer period of rest that precedes and leads to the wintering phase which occurs mainly inside the leaves fallen to the ground in the final period of the growing season. Those very same nymphs usually overwinter inside the leaves on the ground to give rise to adults of the new year: moving on young leaves of the next season just begun, they will carry out the new egg laying from which will be born the first generation of newly hatched larvae that will damage the new plants again. Considering the new situation that has thus arisen this year, the insect harmfulness from the start of the new spring/summer season should be quite lower than the previous year due to a lower number of wintering forms able to promptly repeat infestations. Collect as much as possible the fallen leaves in autumn with the overwintering insect on the inside and carry out their destruction are some of the recommendations that have always sought to stress the importance of eliminate infestations that would soon affect the new vegetation in a preventive and biological way. The confirmation of these observations comes from the fact that, in summer, it was noticed a little presence of adult insect in flight over the foliage of plants, together
with the almost complete absence of exuviae of nymphs which usually protrude and hang outside of the protective cells and are already present in quantities at the end of larval development to protect themselves and the nymphs in their stage of maturation before giving rise to the adult forms. By observing the eclosing of the
adults from the pupal case remained stuck for a long time on the edge of the cells, it is possible to highlight that this has always happened under normal summer weather conditions and that, in the past, they could be seen in flight and intensely present along the stems of trees, mainly towards their base.

Despite having undergone strong early season insect attacks, during the hot summer of 2015 horse chestnut plants are not generally worsened and at the end of the year, they had a semi-aged foliage as in this case.

forms of the insect able to winter, because within the many foliar galleries produced during the summer there were larvae and pupae in large part withered and dead, virtually no longer able to offer the subsequent and intense infestations of the past. This phenomenon gives us a further confirmation of the impor-
tance of not leaving the dead leaves on the ground and that the best natural method of preventive defense consists in the collection and destruction of fallen foliage that, in the municipalities where vegetate horse chestnuts, must have the absolute priority on collecting over any other species. â&#x2013;

Sandro Bruschi nurseries: an agreement with Giorgio Tesi Group Sandro Bruschi nurseries, the historic nursery company in Pistoia, long ailing, has signed an agreement with Giorgio Tesi Group to prevent the closure, safeguarding the employees as well. The agreement between Tesi and Bruschi provides for the sale of the standing crop (the plants in cultivation) and a contract of lease of a branch of the business that will generate large financial flows, protecting employees and other creditors. Funds that Giorgio Tesi Group will pay to Bruschi, but that are contractually 'bound' to the satisfaction of the creditors. The resolution of the crisis table could allow the equitable sharing of these resources among the creditors through the procedure of 'Composition of the crisis by over-indebtedness', which prevents the bankrupt and allows, if the majority of creditors (banks included) accepted, to shorten the time and maximize the percentage of the money recovered by creditors. The flow of resources guaranteed by the agreement between Tesi and Bruschi is substantial and, together with other properties of Sandro Bruschi which remained outside the pact, it could become, with the availability of the banking system, a financial allocation immediately available to provide relevant percentages to creditors. â&#x2013;

Young plant and herb producers will profit from a large number and wide diversity of breeding and marketing tray suppliers. 59 percent of the exhibitors will belong to the Plants exhibition area. At no other fair do the visitors find such an extensive range on offer: Plant breeders from all continents will introduce their new creations here: from bedding, balcony and vegetable plants via nursery goods, Mediterranean growths and herbs right up to house plants and cut flowers. Producing horticulture will be offered an international platform for obtaining information, exchanging specialist ideas and placing orders. It will be possible to find the Plants area not only in Halls 1 and 2,
the Galeria as well as Halls 5, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12 but also in the temporary Halls 13 and 14 and in the foyer of the Grugahalle. The Innovation Showcase in Hall 1A will be a must in order to keep an eye on the trends of the coming season. An expert jury and, in addition, the trade visitors themselves will choose the best new breeds of the IPM exhibitors. Meeting Place for International Decision Makers The Italian exhibitors traditionally bring Mediterranean flair to IPM ESSEN. In the temporary Halls 13 and 14 as well as in the foyer of the Grugahalle, they will show nursery goods typical of the country and ornamental plants for pots. One highlight will be the Sicilian presentation which is being organised by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Trade (ICE). Here, 13 producers will present, above all, lemon and orange trees. Orticolario 2017: call for entries to the "Creative Spaces" competition Entries in the international competition "Creative Spaces" are open for the design and realization of gardens and art installations promoted by Orticolario. The event will be held from 29 September to 1 October 2017 in the historic grounds of Villa Erba in Cernobbio and the theme will be the Moon. The flower of the year for Orticolario 2017 will be the Fuchsia spp, a colorful flower with beautiful nuances in both blossoms and leaves. The competition is open to anyone who can design and set up gardens and facilities. Bright, original, simple and communicative spaces will have to be contextualized harmoniously within the Villa Erba park and the chosen area. Paying respect to the existing landscape, or the 'genius loci', is an essential element as well as completing the space of contemplative sessions and providing adequate lighting for the night opening. The third edition of the three-day international fair dedicated to the green industry – and not only- naugurates a livelier, more elegant, accurate and richer edition than the previous ones. With the upcoming spring the 30,000-m2 pavilions 16 and 20 of Fiera Milano bloom again. In the first edition there were more than 300 brands on display, which became 441 in 2016. Lineaverde News Radicepura Garden Festival in April, a spotlight on landscaping and botany of the Mediterranean During the 67th Flormart in Padua (21-23 September) Mario Faro, President of Radicepura Garden Festival and co-owner of Piante Faro, leading company in the production of Mediterranean plants, has introduced its own arden festival, a great event with internationally renowned names of landscaping and garden design, cultural events and training initiatives. Three years ago Piante Faro began to realize a botanical park, called Radicepura, inspired mainly by the Mediterranean style, located between Catania and Taormina, in the city of Giarre. A botanical park will open in 2018 to the public. Next year, before the opening (80% of the park is ready), this international festival of landscaping and botany of the Mediterranean will be held. The event, from April 21 to October 21, 2017, is proposed as the "first international event on Garden Design of the Mediterranean involving institutions, enterprises, emerging youth, tourists and the greatest protagonists of the landscape design, art and architecture. The festival is conceived to recognize the importance of nature as a development engine for Italy and Europe through initiatives, events and cultural languages: from music to artistic installation, from horticulture to food and wine events. For this festival will be designed and set up 10 new gardens. Five of 150 square meters each will be built by landscapers like Michel Péna, Stefano Passerotti, James Basson, Kamelia Zaal and a

The Radicepura foundation announces a call for international competition dedicated to young under 35 landscapers, architects and designers for the construction of five gardens. The gardens will be built in Radicepura, the botanical park in Giarre, province of Catania, - between Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea - and must be contained within a side surface of 7x7 meters bordered outside the area by Mediterranean plants with an informal habit. The projects will have to propose a particular energy and a desire to connect with the natural world. The presented gardens will have a level of interactivity with the aim to intrigue the audience in an unusual way or amaze them with new ways of presenting what is on the agenda in order to promote an open design approach. The night environment will be designed as
well as any lighting devices, as the park will be open during the evening hours. In the design, it must take account of the garden development during the Festival period (April 21 to October 21) including any necessary maintenance work. Applications are open to single professionals or team of landscapers, architects, garden designers, agronomists, engineers, nursery collaborator, artists, designers, and all those who have the skills to design and build a garden. The selection is also open to companies, associations, cooperatives, schools and universities. Participation in the contest is free and the five projects selected by the jury, chaired by the English landscape designer Sarah Eberle, will receive a partial delivery of the plants up to a maximum of €3,000 in commercial value and a €2,000 budget for the construction of the garden. The garden designers will have the opportunity to express their creativity using the most original plants grown in the Piante Faro nursery, which gathers 800 different species of tropical plants, succulent, aromatic, Mediterranean trees and citrus. The designers or design teams of the five gardens achieved will receive a cash prize of €500. During the festival one or more special awards will be given with a trophy and an additional cash prize of €1,000. The University of Pisa discovered a plant that goes into “hibernation" Plants can go into "hibernation" too. A group of researchers at the University of Pisa has recently published a scientific paper on the international journal PlosOne in which they highlight the extraordinary ability of a herbaceous plant, Festuca arundinacea L., to tolerate extremely restrictive environmental conditions for long periods. "Higher plants can overcome long periods of dormancy, even many years, in dehydrated form of seed - explained Lorenzo Guglielminetti at Pisa University - to date, however, a perfectly hydrated herbaceous plant had never been described to be able to withstand long in total starvation conditions, in the dark, and therefore not able to produce energy through photosynthesis, and the intense cold". In particular, the scientists found that Festuca, formerly used as fodder and today used profusely in the establishment of lawns, is able to germinate in the dark at temperatures around 4°C and to grow in these conditions, albeit at very low speed, for about two hundred days. After this period, as the plant reserves were gone, the plant drastically slows down the metabolism and stops the growth waiting for favorable environmental conditions. The wait can last several hundred days, after which the plant, when exposed to light and an acceptable temperature conditions (23°C), develops again the photosynthetic apparatus within a few hours and, soon after, resumes growth. "In our study we described some of the mechanisms through which Festuca can overcome the long period of stress - said Lorenzo Guglielminetti - further studies in this direction will lead to understand better the secrets hidden by this species, opening application scenarios of huge interest in the genetic improvement of agricultural crops". ■

Along the paths of some pilot sites a number of signs were placed with an invitation to hikers to pay €1 via text message, receiving a set of digital information (maps, brochures, etc.) related to the site where they are located. The proceeds will be collected by ERSAF and allocated to protection actions and restoration of cultural recreation services: for example, the maintenance of the trails. Royal FloraHolland has recently published the results of a survey on consumer satisfaction of European roses from which interesting data have emerged. The rose is the flower of excellence for the general public, a gift for any occasion and especially to declare your love. For 70% of respondents, especially in Germany and the Netherlands, the purchase of flowers is done impulsively, it is something spontaneous and not planned, and, for 50%, is conditioned by special offers (except in France, where this fact is less relevant). Most consumers are happy with their latest purchase, only 49% of Germans, instead, expressed dissatisfaction. The research also includes many other details concerning the care of potted flowers and how these techniques are widespread among the general population. ■

Etienne Van Kerckhove has died "Last March in Wetteren the Belgian nurseryman Etienne Van Kerckhove (1940) has died due to a protracted illness caused ten years ago by a thrombosis. On the initiative of Etienne in 1952, the firm Van Kerckhove was exporting its products, young plants, mainly to Italy, especially in the province of Pistoia, for more than fifty years. In 1972 Etienne officially became the main administrator after they had taken over the nursery from their parents. At some point, 10 employees were working there on a total area of 45 hectares. Apart from being executive, promoter and inspiring the family business, Etienne was a member of several associations of the nursery sector in Wetteren (the nurserymen circle of studies), Gent (the working group for ornamental plants at the Erov) and Brussels (Belbex and Vlam, associations of exporter nurserymen and for the promotion of the sector). He left three children and six grandchildren. ■
Vestire il Paesaggio Special Edition is scheduled During the last meeting the Committee of the ornamental nursery district of Pistoia discussed the environmental issues related to "Pistoia Italian Capital of Culture 2017". As expected in the general program of "Pistoia Italian Capital of Culture 2017", the Committee considers that is fundamental to organize a special edition of Vestire il Paesaggio (“Styling Landscape”) to combine the technical and scientific aspects with those informative, recreational, and cultural ones through a calendar of activities to be implemented both as a preview as during the event expected from 11 to 17 June 2017. The District Committee thinks that is crucial to organize a competition for the redevelopment of public green spaces with the help of a landscape architect and a nursery. Each participant can submit a project for the green area based on a common thread that joins together the designated areas and will be defined by the direction of Vestire il Paesaggio. The projects will be implemented and will remain as a permanent sign of Vestire il Paesaggio 2017 edition. ■

Lineaverde News ANVE to the Advisory working Group: updates on Xylella The meeting of the Advisory working Group was held in Brussels at the European Commission to discuss the working ZP passports and the amendments to the annexes of Council Directive 2000/29 /EC "on protective measures against the introduction into the Community of harmful organisms to plants or plant products, and against their spread within the Community", and the update to the emergency situation caused by the X. fastidiosa. The task of the Advisory working Group is to ensure that the European Commission's policies on the safety of plant products are shared, and that will take into account the views and needs of stakeholders, consumers, and producers. ANVE (National Association of Nurserymen Exporters) was also invited at the appointment of 30 September, representing Italy which participated in the persons of Leonardo Capitanio, vice president, and Edward Sciutti, the secretary. The congress has been attended by the following organisations: ENA, Copa-Cogeca, ESA, Freshfel, Paneurope, Aiph, Foodservice Europe. Concerning the situation of X. fastidiosa: representatives of the European Commission have initially traced the history of the spread of the bacterium in Europe and, especially, in the region of Salento. It was also mentioned that there are currently outbreaks in France and Germany and that the harmful subspecies are different from each other, which results in a good adaptability of the pathogen (there is the X. pauca subspecies in Italy, the X. multiplex and X. pauca in France, the X. fastidiosa in Germany). The Commission announced that a set of controls at import to limit the entry of pathogens will be made in the future. In terms of data, it has been explained that those currently available concerning Salento are not positive because only 3% of the territory, made up of buffer and containment zone, is monitored. It was also reported a certain difficulty in communicating with the Italian authorities, which does not make the relationship any easier, also in anticipation of the third audit which will be carried out in the affected area in November. Unfortunately this aspect was already been reported in the past ever since the emergency was managed at national level with the compulsory administration, but apparently this level of criticality continues even now with the regional management. In this regard it is known that the Region of Puglia has

organized a number of monitoring teams and it is hoped that the whole territory has been brought under control by November (in the hope that no other infected plants were found). On its part, ANVE has expressed its full support for the legislation currently in force, drawing attention to a fact that is often forgotten; in addition to olive growing, another field has also been hard hit, often with different needs: the nursery. It also expressed some proposals for the improvement of production conditions such as the identification of suitable nursery areas provided with the special status of "productive oasis" with a Health warranty for the plant material grown. ANVE asked also to redefine the boundaries of the demarcated zones if, after the audit in November, some of these were to be free of Xylella, to receive information on the conduct of monitoring in the European territories which are free, and to have clarifications on how to implement the passport requirement at Rosa x floribunda by the French authorities. In conclusion, it seems that the Commission has the willing to organize in the future the Advisory group precisely to understand the operator's voice. For our industry it was very important to participate because it has raised the attention towards the nursery; while on the front on the application of the legislation, our country still has to do a great effort to reassure Europe on plant health and efficiency of plant protection services. â&#x2013;

Nursery gardening saves pollution A research held by The Nature Conservancy NGO, entitled 'More trees for healthier air' presented at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in Denver (Colorado), argues that planting trees in the cities can save from pollution and heat waves. The study of The Nature Conservancy has evaluated the impact of an increase in tree cover in terms of temperature mitigation provided to the inhabitants for every dollar spent. The result is that a global investment in the planting of trees of $4 per inhabitant in some of the largest cities in the world could eliminate up to a quarter of the pollution and, if planted in the right places, the trees could serve as an effective barrier filtering the toxic air and protecting the inhabitants. In Italy, a number of initiatives aim to promote and strengthen a healthy and common 'green culture' providing specific incentives for the realization of redevelopment and recovery tasks on relevant uncovered areas of the building units of private property to be allocated to green areas. These measures should realize what is stated in the horticultural National Plan, approved by the State-Regions Conference, but never implemented, regarding the possibility of using the tax allowance for intervening on private gardens with a mechanism similar to that provided for energy saving, houses, furniture or appliances. â&#x2013;

Lineaverde News A recognition from Spain to the Roseto of Cavriglia Since the 1960s in the Roseto Botanico of Cavriglia (AR), named after Gianfranco and Carla Fineschi, you can admire dozens of examples of Spanish roses virtually disappeared anywhere else except for Sant Feliu, a municipality located in the proximity of Barcelona where they lived and worked the most important Spanish breeders and traders of roses, including Dot (Pedro and Simon, the names are repeated from father to son, from grandfather to grandson), Camprubi and Lorenzo Phaissa. Consistently with its mandate to enhance biodiversity and to preserve from extinction representative varieties of all times and trends, the Roseto of Cavriglia is the only specialist collection where you can learn about and enjoy the history of the Spanish rose. For this reason, the present descendants of the Dot family, together with the association that takes care and maintains the collection of Dot roses and other local breeders, wanted to give the Roseto Botanico of Cavriglia a prestigious award on 11 November. On that occasion it was presented the draft of the rose recovering created many decades ago by the Dot family, whose name is "San Valentino" ("Valentine's Day"), a work by Roseto Fineschi and nursery "Occhi di Rosa, Cavriglia" of Lorenzo Chisci with the technical and professional advice of Paolo Melissi. The Rose "San Valentino", which will be available in the spring of 2018, will be reproduced in Cavriglia with exclusive rights throughout the national territory. In addition, Silvia Fineschi, representative of the Roseto of Cavriglia, held a conference on the contents and values that the Roseto holds. â&#x2013;

A guide to Italian horticulture represents 5% of the entire national agricultural production, and contributes to the amount of 23% to European horticultural production, thus constituting a significant and specialised sector, and one that is still characterised by positive economic trends. The economic, territorial and even social aspects of this industry, however, are not always recognised or analysed. These characterise the various areas of production, which, although highly diversified amongst themselves, yet contribute to creating a national scenario that the "legendary Dutch" might well envy us. Indeed, due to its vast assortment of products – ranging from cut flowers to indoor plants, garden plants and large park plants (including a number of specialities such as ornamental citrus trees in terracotta pots, a wide variety of olive trees and the most unusual Mediterranean plants) – Italy is certainly the most heterogeneous and commercially interesting country as regards horticulture. Italian horticultural firms are concentrated in welldefined production territories, a phenomenon known as "leopard spot" localisation. Historically, Liguria, Tuscany, Campania, Puglia and Sicily have always been the main Italian flower areas, while Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Liguria, Tuscany and Sicily have chiefly constituted the main – and less concentrated – potted plant areas. Furthermore, not only Tuscany enjoys important outdoor ornamental plant production, but also Lombardy, Veneto, Marche, Lazio and Sicily. This book contains a well studied guide to the leading Italian horticultural firms, specifying, in each case, general information and the main production specialisations.
IMPORTANT. By “specialisation” we mean the production types that characterise the firm or for which it is best known. The description provided does not exclude the existence of plant groups not mentioned in the guidebook.
