Femina Miss India Telangana 2018

a call from Times of India asking me to come down for the auditions which were held on February 17. Out of 80 contestants two others and I were chosen. On Feb 24, we had a ‘State Crowning’ in Bangalore. We were groomed for a week before the main event and I won the Miss India Telangana 2018. I now feel a huge responsibility resting on my shoulders and see myself more as a representative of my people and my state rather than an individual.

Was becoming a beauty queen always on your mind? The thought of me taking part in a beauty pageant started 3 years ago when I was pursuing my 3rd year of MBBS. I saw this platform as a wonderful opportunity to speak on important issues and voice my choices and also impact people around me. To be more precise, it was just the thought of “using the fame and attention for a noble purpose” Since then I started engaging myself both physically and mentally on a daily basis by hitting the gym and dance classes. I started reading news and books. I personally enjoy reading selfdevelopment, sci-fi, science and philosophy to gain an understanding of life and myself on a deeper level. Knowledge is the best weapon a person can have.

Stunning Kamakshi Bhaskarla has been crowned as the winner of Fbb Femina Miss India Telangana 2018. Kamakshi has completed her medical graduation in MBBS from China and worked there as an intern doctor also, acted in several Telugu short films. Her mantra in life is ‘We rise by lifting others’. She spoke with us and gave us a little insight into her life and also told us about her journey of becoming Miss India Telangana 2018. Tell us about yourself? I was born in Andhra Pradesh but bought up in Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad; I am always very curious about science and passionate about arts which led me to act in few short films in my regional language (Telugu). I love watching comedy films. From what I see, comedy is a ray of hope. Coming from a very conservative Indian family and growing up in a stereotypical environment I faced many challenges in life. No step was easy. While growing as a person, studying in an international university was the highlight, as I was able to make my friends from all over the world and learn about different cultural appreciation and life skills. I take great pride in calling myself a doer and dreamer as well; I worked hard to make dreams turn into reality. I believe my strength lies in my hard work, optimistic approach that I have and logical thinking with a healthy amount of respect and obedience towards my work and authority respectively. I identify as a secular humanist and I am a pescatarian. Why did you decide to compete in this pageant?

The biggest reason is to change the preconceived notion what people have when they hear the word “beauty”. I want to try and make people understand that beauty is more than what they see in a mirror. And society has very less knowledge about beauty pageants and what is needed to be a beauty queen. I was once discriminated by my college seniors when I mentioned my wish to be a beauty queen because they had a distorted perspective towards pageants. I know it is not something which can be changed in a day or two. I would say that constant effort and patience is required when you decide to compete in a beauty pageant. How was your journey of becoming Femina Miss India Telangana 2018? The actual journey began in January 2017. Pageants are slightly expensive. So I worked as an intern doctor and and as a part-time dancer dancer at one of the biggest restaurants in China, so I could save some money for my gym and other expenses. When I returned to India, I officially began preparing. My mom and brother have been very supportive all the way from the beginning of this journey. I filled my application in December 2017 and received

What has been your greatest driving force in life? ‘Struggles’, I always had an instinctive urge for learning and volunteering, it led me to work with a fair number of NGOs both in China and India. Angel house, Voice 4 Girls and make a difference (M.A.D) are the ones that I worked for. This work of mine has taught me so much in my life, engaging with these innocent souls and listening to their life stories made me realize much fortunate and privileged we as the general population are and these kids are the only thing I keep reminding myself of every day. I think that’s what allows me to push my boundaries. “The urge to inspire and influence others” Any plans on getting into the film industry? I will cross the bridge when I get there. What are your inspirations? What change have they brought into you? Elon Musk, Bill and Melinda Gates, Ellen DeGeneres, Lilly Singh, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Babu Gogineni are a few of my inspirations. Each one has got something special to offer and everyone is working for a great purpose. I admire people who make their mark on the world in their respective fields as I understand the kind of dedication and hard work that is required to be successful and get noticed in the world. I strongly believe in empowering others because I think the measure of success will be the ability to touch and transform other people’s lives. We rise by lifting others. “Miss India” is the platform where I can reach people on a larger scale.

Harmann Kaur A trained pilot, former news presenter/correspondent/ talk show host with DD news, worked on IIFA Awards and now a celebrity fashion stylist, Harmann sure is a multifaceted personality! She is outgoing with an extremely liberal and progressive thought process but at the same time someone who comes home to a family with a strong value system. She has carved a niche for herself as she is now one of the most sought-after fashion stylists. Harmann has worked with some of the top celebrities in Tollywood like Allu Arjun and Vijay Devarakonda. She is a happy go lucky person. “I drive my own happiness”, she says. 22 APRIL, 2018 - TULIP

What’s your daily routine like? I gladly do not follow a set routine. That would’ve gotten to me. Since my work entails different verticals, each day is rather a surprise. Mostly involves meetings, shoots, sourcing/shopping clothes/accessories etc. I try to squeeze in my workout somewhere. What do you do in your leisure time? Loohoots of Netflix, Ssocial media, catch a movie/live band with mom. I’m very close to my brothers so most time goes with them. Also, I make it a point to catch up with my friends (I wish I get more of this leisure time though). How do you manage your personal and professional life? Being a stylist does not mean a 9-5, 6 days a week work. Sometimes when there are shoots you are probably working over 12-14 hours a day, continuously for 3-4 days while other times you are chilling at home for a week straight. My profession gives me a lot of time to maintain a fine balance between my personal and professional life. How did you go from being a pilot to a celebrity fashion stylist? It’s a difficult graph curve to explain. While I was training for CPL the Aviation Sector was very saturated and there was no job security, DD News happened around then

LIFESTYLE of barely 5. I immensely enjoy making people look good. It took me a few years to figure what I enjoy the most and that’s what I made my profession. Now work does not even feel like work. I look forward to each day and thoroughly enjoy every bit. Confucius says, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life”, I guess I took his advice seriously. Out of all the celebrities you’ve styled, who did you have the most fun working with and why? Would be unfair if I pick one but I would say Allu Arjun. His sense of style if very very effortless but at the same time very selective and classy. He lets one experiment and carries off any look with ease. Also, appreciates good work and when it comes from a stylish star like him who has immense fashion knowledge it motivates and encourages you to do better and better.

and my family supported and encouraged me in every bold move I made with regard to my career choices. I grabbed every opportunity that came my way even if it required drastic changes in my profession. I enjoyed everything I have done so far and I can proudly look back and say I HAVE NO REGRETS. I do confuse rather shock people when they ask me what I do or have done, I get mixed reactions but each to their own. I wouldn’t want it any other way. Styling is a passion for me; I was a very dressy kid right from the age

Tell us about your experience working for IIFA awards. Oh! It was one of the best experiences of life; extremely enriching professionally. It made me more organised. Before IIFA I was very non-corporate (if that is a word). IIFA made me a torpedo at Excel and Powerpoint. *laughs*. Event life can teach you how to manage stress, time and conflicts and it teaches you the hard way. Deals fall apart last minute sometimes and you got to be ready with a backup or take a bullet. I got to travel, meet different people and one thing I learned about myself was ‘Girl, you can sell’. What are your biggest achievements so far? Anything that has made my Momma proud was an achievement in itself, big or small. What are your plans this summer? Travel to the West Coast and Mexico to visit the sister (If work cooperates)

Rapid Fire What is one of the things you would put on your “bucket” list? Sail a yacht myself in Amalfi Coast. If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you? Most definitely a chick flick, and can I play the role, please? *laughs* If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go and why? NYC, I love it there or Mexico to visit my nephew. What is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning? Contradictory to my personality but off late I’m trying to meditate. What store do you shop at the most? Style is what you do with the fashion you buy from any damn place but if I have to pick, ZARA (if I am shopping in Hyderabad) What is the first thing you notice about someone when you first meet? SHOES and Handbags.

He developed a passion for makeup artistry while choreographing and performing stage shows and has many years of experience in television, film and fashion industry. “For this look, I’ve used the Estee Lauder double wear foundation; it covers up really well, is long lasting and sets quickly. For the eyes, I went with the Naked Matte Eyeshadow palette and Makeup Forever Smokey Palette (it’s absolutely amazing and I love it!). The Anastasia Beverley Hills brow gel is long wearing and set, defines and holds the brows in place. The Huda Beauty 3D Highlighter palette is an ideal option as its smooth and a great light reflector. For the lips, I’ve mixed Huda Beauty and MAC to get that wonderful matte finish”. Current Favourite: Chanel Lumiere Foundation. People want their skin to look dewy and have a bright glow and the Chanel Lumiere foundation gives just that! Instagram: sandysartistry

Harika Marumamula

An upcoming makeup artist, Harika is already taking Hyderabad by storm. Her main goal is to make sure that you feel beautiful and she always comes through!

I love doing editorial makeup and this one by far has been my all-time favourite. The trend of glossy eyelids and lips has been all over the place. It looks complicated yet it is simple. You have to start off with the basics, cleanse, tone, moisturise (CTM). After that, prime the face and apply foundation and concealer. I’ve used MAC pigment and MAC lip glass for the lids and applied it all over the eye. Same goes with the lipstick, take a lipstick colour of your choice and mix it with MAC lip glass and it will give you a glossy finish. Trust me on this, MAC lip glass is a must for everyone’s kit as you can use it in multiple ways. My trick for the eyebrows is to take any lip balm of your choice, put some on a mascara wand and brushes it through the eyebrows to give it a different look. Current Favourite: Juvia’s place eyeshadow palettes! They are incredibly bright, pigmented and affordable. After seeing so many people on Instagram and Youtube rave about it, I had to try them and I have to say these are amazing palettes to buy for a beginner makeup artist. BEAUTY

Gazal Rawlyani

Extremely talented and professional is what best describes Gazal Rawlyani. Whether it’s a bridal look or it’s everyday makeup, her favourite look is one with glowing skin, warm eye tones, fluttery lashes and nude tone on the lips! “Cakey makeup is passé”, she says. “Use a foundation of your skin tone- love Bobbi Brown foundations personally, MAC concealers and correctors are great- you can pick up a lighter shade to highlight the high points of your face, an orange tone natural blush is a must have- I have used Peaches from MAC on my bride, on her lips she’s wearing Dangerous by MAC cosmetics again! I’ve used a combination of highlighters on the skin for the extra glow- but I personally love the Becca highlighters!!” Current Favourite: NARS concealer- it’s an essential in my personal makeup bag! Instagram: gazalrawlyanimakeup

Aliya Al- Mahmoud

Aliya Al-Mahmoud is the first name that comes to mind when you think of a bridal makeup artist. She has been trained by Bouba and Samer Khouzami, the top makeup artists in Lebanon, and has over 8 years of experience which makes her one of the best in town! She is also extremely friendly and takes great pride in what she does. Most people opt for an overall soft look and some brides want to incorporate their own twist on a specific look, such as a bold lip or a dramatic smokey eye. I absolutely love it when brides leave their entire look to me. They say “show your magic” because you know what is best for us. There is no right or wrong when it comes to wedding makeup. Do what makes you happy! The Bobbi Brown vitamin enriched face base is one of the best primers and unlike other options, this rich consistency allows it to actually blur, rather than just be a base for your makeup. I always work on eye according to the eye shape. I don’t want my brides’ eyes to look made up; I only always aim to enhance their beauty. I love the Laura Mercier eye caviar sticks as they are really user-friendly and come in lots of great shades. The formula for the Lancome Hypnose mascara is buildable, and the brush wraps around the lashes, giving them a full coat of inky black drama. Temptu airbrush offers perfect coverage for all skin types and looks perfectly natural. It’s definitely one of my favourites! Makeupforever makeup setting powder is one of the best products I have ever used. It’s so gratifying to see that the appearance of enlarged pores or oily skin decreases as you move your powder brush. This sheer pressed powder is a must-have for makeup touch-ups throughout the day. Since it is lightweight, you can put on as much as you’d like without feeling like you’re clogging your pores. I love giving the lips a contrasting shade so I’ve used the Smashbox liquid matte shade in Bawse. Current favourite: Benefit Roller Lash Curling & Lifting Mascara. I use Benefit Roller Lash every day because it gives me a super-nice curled lash without looking clumpy or heavy! It’s perfect when you don’t wear fake lashes. The only drama I enjoy is my lashes! Shafeen Khan

BEAUTY

Every bride dreams of looking her best on her wedding day and Shafeen Khan makes this come true. Her makeup is simply flawless and picture perfect! For the eyes, I’ve used the Huda Beauty Rose Gold Palette, Urban Decay glitter liner in Midnight Cow Boy, Maybelline Push up drama mascara and Loreal superliner. I’m an absolute fan of the MAC Studio Fix Foundation and MAC Studio Fix Powder and have used it as the base. The Anastasia Beverley Hills Contour kit is really easy to work with and is one of the best for contouring. For the highlighter and blush, I’ve used Anastasia Beverley Hills glow kit in Sweets and blush trio in Berry Adore. I love NYX Soft matte lip cream as it goes on really smooth and have used the same in the shade Copenhagen. Current Favourite: MAC Satin lipstick. It has a creamy formula which feels super soft and gives a satin finish. It’s definitely a must-have! Instagram: shafeenkhan_ makeupdiaries

Zoha Imran

Zoha Khan started her career at the age of 14, as the youngest fashion trainer and groomer in Hyderabad. Working with her father, who is also an ace fashion show director, Mr. Imran Khan she has trained and groomed umpteen numbers of professional and non-professional models and has also worked with renown designers of Indian and international fame. In order to achieve a perfect makeup look, the first tip is to nourish your skin by cleansing, toning and moisturizing on a daily basis. It becomes very important to know and purchase the right makeup products based on factors such as your skin type, your undertones, different types and textures of concealers/ colour correctors/ foundations for camouflaging and hiding any flaw on the skin. In addition to that, correct make up application techniques is the trick to hack any makeup look. Highlighting and contouring adds those brownie points to your makeup by giving it a precise definition. For long lasting makeup, I highly recommend and use highend makeup products from brands such as MAC cosmetics, Fenty Beauty, Anastasia Beverly Hills and Huda Beauty which are always a better bet for best results and a good colour payoff. Current Favourite: I’m a big fan of MAC cosmetics (especially their foundations) and that is one thing that never leaves my makeup kit. Instagram: glamouratibyzohakhan

Paper Towers

Nikita Rochiramani is a 23-year old graduate from St. Francis College for Women and owner of the Paper towers, who is also working as the Lead Creative Content Designer at a corporate firm. Post her work time she hand crafts gifts for her clients at Paper Towers. It’s sounds hectic but she loves and enjoys every bit of it. She says that her workplace keeps her updated with every new design and social media marketing trends while Paper Towers makes her interact with new people, listen to their stories and craft it into an unforgettable experience. Tell us about how you started paper towers? When I was in the 3rd year of my college, I was elected as the Creative Head because of my pro-activeness in designing posters and making handcrafted cards and boxes for every event. Initially, I wasn’t very convinced but gradually I found my passion towards designing and making everyone happy through handmade cards and gift boxes. Later, while having a conversation with my friend, Aakruti, I expressed my interest in gifting. That’s when she caught hold of it and together, we started Paper Towers. She discontinued after her wedding a year back and from then, I I have been taking care. Can you tell us about what Paper Towers is about? Paper Towers is all about embracing memories and making people happy through our hand-crafted gifts at economical prices. I deal with a wide range of products, to name a few; Explosion Box, Greeting Cards, Favour Boxes, Gift Hampers, Birthday/Wedding Invites, Themed Birthday Party Décor and Return Gifts, Customized Photo Frames, Scrap Books, Save the Dates, E-invites for all occasions etc. and every bit of it can be customized according to the client’s needs. I believe in empathizing with every client who approaches me, for without understanding their feeling or the depth of their relationship with the person they’re gifting, the mere essence of personalization is lost. I put my best foot forward to make sure that the client gets more than what he/she asks for. How was the journey so far? The journey since inception has been absolute magic. When we started Paper Towers, we never expected it to come this far. Yes, I did have my own share of ups & downs where I came to a point of shutting everything down and getting back to my 9-5 routine, but I guess that was never destined to be. Moreover, having catered to over 130 clients in a span of 2 years was certainly not something I ever thought of achieving.I’ve been blessed with amazing clients who’ve always been very co-operative, one

among them being Tollywood actor, Sumanth Ashwin. Maintaining a balance between my corporate job and Paper Towers, without turning down a single order is the biggest challenge that I’ve faced, but at the end of the day, those sleepless nights are totally worth it. Sometime soon, when I’m sure of the industry experience I’ve had, I will launch a dynamic website & a retail workshop/studio. I’m also planning to learn new techniques of Illustration and Typography in the near future which will eventually help me in adding new products to Paper Towers. Trousseau Decor By Rama & Vidushi Ganeriwal

“My mother has always been fascinated with art. She loves making beautiful, delicate decorations and crafts from scrap. From there, stemmed her passion for trousseau decor. It all started twenty years ago when she decided to do something about her passion and stumbled upon this idea as a hobby. At that time, this idea was fairly new to the city of Hyderabad, most of them had never heard of anything of that sort. She had to cultivate awareness and then, develop her brand. It is only because of her sheer dedication that she was able to succeed. After that, there was no looking back” says Vidushi. Trousseau Decor consists of beautifully crafted decorations and packaging for all the pre and post wedding items. It is, in simple words, adding a whole lot of magic and glitter to the wedding trousseau. Even though, initially people were very skeptical about it, their work has always spoken for them and as each year passed by the response kept getting better. “With the idea of a perfect wedding being in everybody’s heads, Trousseau Décor has become a norm that everybody swears by. The mirror trays, theme goodies and baskets, meticulously arranged sweets; gorgeously draped outfits all engulfed in beauty, never fail to impress. I have been helping my mom for a long time now and right after graduation, it was a no-brainer that I would join her. That’s when we expanded into event decor. I’ve always had an affinity for vintage and rustic themes and most of my work reflects that with a dash of floral and lots of customization added to each party. They cater to a myriad of events ranging from bridal showers, baby showers, housewarming parties to engagement parties. Every event they take up and every wedding they do, they feel their happiness and it fills them with satisfaction. “After all, there’s a whole other feel to making somebody’s special days even more special” says Vidushi. Street Art Welcome to Hyderabad’s official art district. Reds, greens, blues, jewel tones, bright neon, stylised faces, birds, animals – it’s all there in Hyderabad’s MS Maqta. The locality that lies near the Raj Bhavan and Hussain Sagar Lake has been declared the city’s art district in a bid to boost the city’s image and attract more tourists. The streets of MS Maqta are colour-coded – each street has been designed a specific colour that artists can use. So there is green gully, a boulvevard of blues, a pink pathway and a red road. What distinguishes street art from other forms of art is that it is the voice of the public that is meant to be heard by the public. The intention of street artists is not to have their art confined to a museum, but rather have it displayed for the masses to see. If you were to pass through the streets of Hyderbad now, especially around Necklace Road and Mukhta in Begumpet, you would be in for a visual treat.

Jukebox 2.0

Jack was born and bought up in Mumbai. He had a fairly normal, average childhood which involved a bit of travelling as his father was in the merchant navy. Music happened when he was in college and there was no turning away from it. It shaped him into the person he is today. “Through my musical journey, my attitude changed drastically mainly owing to the thoughts, attitudes and philosophies of all the wonderful singers, songwriters and bands that I was exposed to and had fully immersed myself into. Some of the most beautiful, thought provoking, intensely moving and life-altering poetry is found in great songs.” says Jack. His singing partner Sangtei Khuptong, who is a young and rising singing star from Aizawl, Mizoram, beautifully complements Jack and enables him to cover a wider variety of songs. Sangtei has a truly awesome voice and is an absolutely amazing singer which makes her famous and respected in the North East with a large fan following. Jack’s professional career started with the formation of India’s first and pretty much only Glam Rock band called Hazzard. After Hazzard broke up, he was lucky to find himself inducted into the music industry as a session musician. He has worked with various artists like Leslie Lewis, Nandu Bhende and also did innumerable studio sessions for commercials and Bollywood films. “The basic fact that I love and enjoy performing and wholly identify with so many styles, genres and artists was the essence of what led me to form Jukebox 2.0 - an act with which I could perform all my favourites across the board every night. I am delighted to be performing the songs as the audience is listening to them. Currently, my repertoire spans close to 1500 songs and the list is continuously growing” says Jack. Jukebox 2.0 covers most forms of popular music that appeal to a wide range of audiences. From Frank Sinatra to Maroon 5, the duo truly enjoy and respect the song that they cover and try to do their utmost justice to it. Making your dreams a reality 3Mark Services provide innovative solutions to their clients as per their requirements. They have a good amount of experience in organizing corporate events, celebrity events and weddings in Hyderabad and other cities as well. Their core activities include public reactions, corporate events, theme parties, weddings and celebrity management etc. They have a durable relationship with many publications, venues and vendors in order to offer the best pricing and selection for your extraordinary affair. Here is what the Managing Director Mr. Sameer Sheikh, has to say, “My agency, 3MARK SERVICES was established in the year 2013 and was started with literally nothing. All thanks to my past experiences and team efforts, 3Mark Services is now a well-known name in India. Initially, when I had entered the PR industry, I was struck by the glamour world and really liked it. It was fun working with celebrities and I’ve done glamorous events with stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Soha Ali Khan and many others. But gradually I kind of got bored to just sticking to one medium and shifted to the political, corporate and retail sector. These political and corporates/IT companies have their own in-house issues which affect us (PR agencies handling them). However, I find this profession very challenging where you meet new people every day, have regular deadlines and there’s no limit to anything - what to do and how to do. You just have to keep going with the flow and explore as much as you can. I think PR industry is booming big time and the credit goes to the politicians. They are the ones who kick-started the trend of hiring PR experts and today almost every celebrity, star or a socialite has a PR agency who not only looks after their work as a manager but also promotes them in whichever way. Now,3Mark Services is not only limited to PR but has come far ahead and provides services like event management and wedding planning. We help our clients create an intimate, yet, elegant affair for a wedding. With a lot of successful events done in Hyderabad and other cities in India, we have been listed among the top Wedding Planners in the city. We emphasize that planning is about the bride and groom, not what we want. Our role is to be their best advocate. We want our clients to have ideas that fit their sense, setting, and style. We approach events as if we’re telling the couple’s story. We love to keep up with our clients after their big day to watch their milestones, to know we were a little part of beginning that life together is really special. Right now, I’m enjoying this profession and wish to take my company ahead in a big way.” 32 APRIL, 2018 - TULIP

One stop for all your hair problems Rahul started his career at the age of 15 and is totally passionate about his profession because of which he is often called as “Hair Friend” by his clients. He has 8 years of experience in hair services and provides technical hair service, including keratin treatment, colouring, foiling, special occasion hair styling and trendy cuts. He completely analyzes hair and scalp condition after which he suggests what kind of treatments need to be done. One of our team members went for the hair spa. Before heading to Yashika Hair Salon, her hair was a total mess, she was sick and tired of her hair knots; also her hair looked dull and lifeless. After having a conversation with Rahul who understood her plight, he suggested she opt for the Olaplex treatment. They decided to transform her knotty hair into smooth, silky and shiny hair; the treatment took almost 2 hours. He first checked her hair texture, washed her hair with Bio Keratin shampoo after which he chopped off her damaged hair, keeping her hair length requirement in mind. He started the treatment by applying Olaplex on her hair and left in on for an hour and then washed it off, she found her hair strands looking thicker and healthier. His treatment was quite effective on her chemically damaged hair. The salon is centrally located and their prices are very reasonable. Here is a Summer tip by Rahul: Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner when scalp feels sweaty and do not rinse your hair with only water. Hill Fort “The magnificent Hill Fort Palace was a palace of the erstwhile Nizams of Hyderabad state. It was the palace where the younger son of the last Nizam, Prince Moazzam Jah, referred to as the junior Prince, stayed. It was operated as the Ritz Hotel.” The eldest son of Nizam VII, Prince Azam Jha- the Prince of Berar stayed in the Bella Vista. The younger son, Prince Moazzam Jah, stayed in the ‘Hill Fortalice’. Both buildings commanded a beautiful view of the Hussain Sagar Lake almost at the right angles to each other. Incidentally, while the Bella Vista was originally built by Nawab Hakim-Du-Dowla in 1905, the ‘Hill Fort Palace’ was built by his cousin, Sir Nizamat Jung ten years later. Both were chief justice of the state in their time. Sir Nizamat rose to be a minister later. Sir Nizamat Jung suffered from asthma in 1915 and he was advised to stay in an open place with fresh air. Thereupon he bought a piece of five acres of land for Rs. 100 and proceeded to build a residence for himself. Its architectural style was based on the Trinity College in Cambridge- where he studied- and the castles described in the novels of Sir Walter Scott. The Building was completed in 1915 and named the Hill Fort Palace. He lived in 34 APRIL, 2018 - TULIP

it for 15 years. After a visit to Mecca on his retirement in 1929, he decided to live a simpler life and so decided to sell the property. The Nizam then bought the building as he had earlier bought the Bella Vista. Sir Nizamat asked for a price of Rs. 1, 00,000 an amount which did not include the appreciation. From that amount, he requested for adjustment of the amount of two loans which he had taken for building the house and for the purchase of a car. The net price was Rs. 67,000.

The Hill Fort Palace was then allotted to the junior Prince as his official residence in his capacity as the chairman of the city improvement board. He was married to Princess Niloufer who was the first cousin of the wife of the Prince Berar, who, in turn, was the only child of the last Caliph of Turkey. The Prince who was a poet sported the pen name of ‘Shajih’. He used to live lavishly and held his ‘court’ at night, sleeping during the day. Every evening a selected gathering of nobles and some poets were invited and mostly poetry composed by him was sung by professional singers. Early in the morning, the ‘court’ would be dismissed and the Prince would take two sleeping pills and go to bed. Some well-known poets came to be associated with his ‘court’. On every Eid, he used to buy a new set of clothes consisting of a Sherwani and a pyjama which was presented to all his courtiers. For himself when he made a purchase, Burton’shop in Secunderabad was closed to all other customers except the wives of European military officers. The Prince never purchased a piece. He would buy a whole roll. The idea was that nobody else should wear a sherwani made of

a cloth similar to the one that he had purchased. For Eid, agents were sent to different parts of the country to select and invite singers and dancers. Amongst them was also Begum Akhtar who at that time was known as Akhtari Bai Faizabadi. Valuable gifts were given to them on their departure. There is an account of the gifts given to her by Sidq Jaisi. The lavish lifestyle of the Prince landed him in debts from all and sundry. Ultimately, the Nizam had to bail him and his elder brother out of the huge debts which they had incurred. Due to different lifestyle and values, the Prince and Princess Niloufer could not live together for long. In 1948, they had a divorce. The Nizam created a trust for her maintenance and Niloufer then left India and settled in France where she died some years ago. The Prince used mostly to compose lyrical poetry of a lighter type. It is still sung in many mehfils of Hyderabad by ghazal singers. After the Police Action, the mansion became the property of the government and the Prince moved out to stay in the ‘Fern Villa’ – the former residence of the former Superintendent of Public Gardens and the legendary wit of Hyderabad, Jamaluddin. The Hill Fort Palace was used for some time as an office by the newly-appointed Development Commissioner of the State, the late Zahir Ahmed. In 1955 the building was leased to the Ritz Hotel company for running a hotel there. For many years the Ritz Hotel was the most modern and the best hotel in Hyderabad. It retained its old world charm till the very end and many old-timers still used to prefer to stay there rather than the more modern hotels which came up later in the city. In 1989 the government decided to terminate the lease and after protracted legal battles, ultimately the building reverted to the government in 1997. There were various proposals about the use to which it should be put – as a State guest house, or as a residence for the chief minister. Finally, it was decided to run it as a Heritage Hotel. International consultants are being appointed for that purpose for selecting a private party to run it. The building is now nearly 96 years old and has been witness to so much history and has generated so many legends and anecdotes. Hopefully, they will be kept in mind before its renewal and reuse. This place is now being used for displaying the art work and sometimes art shows are being held at this property. Fever of And the IPL season is finally here! People who generally don’t watch cricket are also found glued to the idiot box, watching the star-studded IPL match. It is the complete package, after all – a fusion of Cricket and Bollywood. It’s great entertainment and isn’t that what a game should be for a viewer? IPL not just encourages the young, aspiring players but also gives the players long lost in the fringes of domestic cricket to once again come into limelight. Whatever your reason may be to love IPL, we can all agree that it’s one of the best times to bond with your family and friends! We’ve asked people to share with us what they love the most about IPL and of course, which team they’re supporting!

36 APRIL, 2018 - TULIP

FEATURE Everybody loves cricket or rather everybody loves watching cricket and I am one of them. I particularly like watching it as it’s a mix of entertainment, drama, celebration and support! It keeps me hooked to the very end. It is similar to the heartbeat because every time we miss a shot, or anything for that matter my heart either skips a beat or is beating super fast. I can watch the IPL anywhere! It depends on the situation. If I am at the office, I watch it sneakily on my phone, when my boss isn’t around. If I’m out with friends then we chill at some place and watch it on the big screen and if it is happening in the city then I’ll definitely go to the stadium!! My favourite Cricketers are Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner and I’m supporting the SunRisers Hyderabad! Mohit Srivastava, Marketing and Activation at Fever 94.3 FM

I love watching the IPL because I see the world’s best players competing with each other in India. A team in IPL is a mix of great foreign and Indian players with some raw talent which makes it super exciting. I support the Royal Challengers Bangalore because Virat Kohli and Ab de Villiers are playing for it. Mostly, I prefer to watch the match live at the stadium with my friends especially if Virat Kohli is playing because I like his aggressive nature and sense of style! Namir Baig, Student

The British didn’t leave much behind for us, but they left us with cricket, and we have much to thank them for that, because cricket isn’t just a sport in our country, it has gone on to become a part of our culture, it’s a way of life and some may even call it religion. The IPL is great! Its summer time and everyone’s got holidays, and it’s great to see our favourite Indian and international players come together and play for our city. Everyone’s talking about it and giving their opinion as the season goes, through the highs and lows of winning and losing. But the IPL serves much more than just the purpose of entertainment, with incomprehensible competition for a place in the Indian team with so many senior players already deeply rooted, it gives an opportunity for young talent to emerge. Players like Ambati Rayudu, Pragyan Ojha, Axar Patel, Sanju Samson and more recently Yuzvendra Chahal have all gotten recognition and a chance to showcase their skill for the Indian team as a result of their IPL form. It also gives players from humble backgrounds an opportunity to show that relentless hard work can pay off, a great example of which is Mohamed Siraj, who performed great for Hyderabad and whose father is an auto driver. I feel like the IPL also serves the purpose of unifying all of us and gives us something to collectively cheer for, for our city, our team, at times likes these when politicians are trying to polarize and divide the country for their own benefit. And that is why I love the IPL. Omer Javeed, Student TULIP - APRIL, 2018 37

Making the best of Summer

Now that summer is here, all of you might have started looking for summer camps to enrol your kids into. Summer camps are a great idea because kids not only learn how to trust others, work with others and build meaningful relationships but also develop decision-making skills and accept guidance, all of which nurture independence and confidence, creating a foundation that will serve them for the rest of their lives. As children spend so much time inside these days and mostly sitting down, camps provide a wonderful opportunity to movejumping, swimming, hiking, and climbing! Kids also get a break from TV, iPads and phones which help them rediscover their creative powers and engage the real world – real people, real activities, and real emotions. They’re free from their routine life of home and school and can just have some fun at camps. We’ve listed some of the camps in the city that you might want to enrol your kids into. Viva Diz: SUMMER CAMP 2018 Why Creativity? Fostering creativity won’t just increase your child’s chances of becoming the next Picasso. You’re also helping one develop mentally, socially, and emotionally, says Kavya Bollaki, a Creative Visualizer. Creating art may boost young children’s ability to analyze and problem-solve in myriad ways. As kids manipulate a paintbrush, their fine motor skills improve. By counting pieces and colors, they learn the basics of math. When children experiment with materials, they dabble in science. Most important perhaps, when kids feel good while they are creating, art helps boost self-confidence. And children who feel able to experiment and to make mistakes feel free to invent new ways of thinking, which extends well beyond the craft room. Kavya Bollaki, an officially stamped Guinness World record Holder for World Largest Crochet Blanket, 2016 is passionate about conducting workshops for young minds as well as adults. She also had a workshop at Shape kins. This summer they have come up with some unique ideas where kids can learn Boho art, Puppetry, Table Toppers, Gift tags, Origami, Tie n Dye n much more.

Building A Better World A people’s person, passionate about her work with an eye for detail is how we can best describe Pooja Mitra. She started her career in corporate relations then moved into marketing and now works primarily within education, both as a profession and as a social cause. Though the perspectives used in these domains are entirely different, there is a common thread connecting them all. They all involve her interest in people skills and her love for learning. “I feel it has been a natural progression route that I took. Education gives me the flexibility to find the best work-life balance while remaining connected to the learning curve. Now looking back, I realize that I have always loved children and through business initiatives which were earlier OiPlayschool Banjara Hills and now are Edseed Preschool and Edmappers Pvt. Ltd. I am happy that we are adding value to children’s education and young adults’ personal and career transformation”, she says. What are the basic, most important things to look for before enrolling your child in a preschool? When parents begin their search for a preschool for their child it is important for them to do a survey of the schools, at a preschool level, the prerequisites differ than when choosing the main school. The reason why a majority of parents put their child in a preschool before they put them in the main school is that they are looking for a homely atmosphere for their child and going to a preschool is the first baby steps the child is taking outside the safety of their homes. When looking for a preschool for your child the important things to look out for are primarily the safety and security, cleanliness and hygiene, quality of teachers, curriculum, holistic development of the child, child adult ratio and the also the involvement of the management. How driven and passionate they are, is what resonates within the academic team. Elaborating a little on the above, when child feels as safe and secure in his environment he becomes a smart and confident child and is open to learning and the grasping power is enhanced. As the immunity level of such young children is not very high, a neat and clean environment is essential for them to stay and healthy and be regular to school. Quality is essential at the preschool level and no compromise should be made when selecting a preschool for your child. As it is here, the platform for the learning is introduced the seed for good quality education is sown. How important is the adult-student ratio? Individual attention is one of the key points to be considered when looking for a preschool for your child, as this is where the seed of a stable foundation for good education is sown. 44 APRIL, 2018 - TULIP

The child is used to getting one on one attention from their parents so when stepping into a preschool care is taken to widen their horizons and nurture them to be smart and independent in a phased manner. So it is very important for the adultstudent ratio to be at least 1: 8 for a child’s development. It is a way of ensuring the child to have an adult’s guidance and support at the same time encouraging self-initiated play and other activities. How can teachers make the program experiential, fun and stimulating? Preschool teachers play a very important role in a child’s life. They are the second parents in a child’s life. It is essential for a teacher to be warm and loving so that the child is comfortable in his or her learning space. The complete focus should be on the learning outcome of a program and the teacher should plan the curriculum to be dispersed through various mediums. Each child’s interest, grasping power and nature varies. A teaching aid like a flashcard might help one child to understand a concept but another child maybe grasps the concept better when showcased creatively. So it is important for the teachers to introduce the same program in different mediums for all the children and at the same time make it fun and childlike. The initiation of learning should be fun in a play way method. How can teachers handle behaviour problems in the best possible way? A lot of care should be taken when handling behaviour problems. It would be a good idea to first understand the reason behind the inappropriate behaviour. A teacher is required to be sensitive to the child and manage the child’s behaviour in a loving but a firm manner.

Explaining and reasoning for the need of good behaviour with a child at an appropriate moment would be one way, another way is not paying attention to a child when they are throwing a tantrum instead, recognising and appreciating their good behaviour could be the other. Discipline should not be a harsh action but a simple expression and act of drawing lines and letting the child know what behaviour is and what behaviour is not acceptable in a firm manner. With so many new schools, how does one ensure which is the best for their child after transitioning from preschool to the main school? The baby steps that the child first took when walking into a preschool has now transitioned to more confident big steps. Parents need to first assimilate and understand the nature of the child and map it with accordance to their requirement and the main school options available. A visit to various schools and research to understand the ethos is highly recommended. It is a parent’s prerogative to understand and prioritize what their expectations is for their child in terms of academics, sports, extracurricular activities, a holistic development, individual attention, infrastructure, the location etc.It would be a good idea to draw up a list of priorities expected from a school for your child and take the decision around it. COVER STORY Designers Archana and Puneeth are known for celebrating Indian woven textiles and creating silhouettes to accentuate sustainability, the dynamic duo is a powerhouse of unique talent. Their label ‘Archana & Puneeth’ offers bespoke handloom designs and hand-woven masterpieces.

Tell us about yourself? Archana - I was born and raised in Hyderabad and studied at NIFT college of Hyderabad. I graduated from Glasgow Caledonian in Scotland in International Fashion Marketing. I have always been inclined towards kids’ fashion as it was still unexplored in India, a decade ago. I launched my label ‘Etash and Archana’ after my son’s name in the year 2007. The aesthete of my fashion sensibilities is to take cultural influences and merge it with the philosophy of regalness and streamlined silhouettes, and the women’s wear label happened when I had met Puneeth. We organically grew into the label Archana and Puneeth. Puneeth – I was born and raised in Hyderabad; I grew up in hardworking business oriented yet loving family of 4. During my early years I had pursued a career in medicine but always wanted to do something that would spark my creative side which was always a big part of me while growing up. This dream of mine was suppressed to ignorance by me mostly and partly by the preconceived notions of Indian socialistic ideology where an individual’s growth was limited to a “Doctor” or an “Engineer”. But I found my calling when I met my childhood friend Archana who happened to share the same entrepreneurial goals as mine. This was how fashion happened in my life. Tell us something about your label? Archana & Puneeth – The brand philosophy is that we narrate the history, richness, ethical empowerment and humanity of the villages that are sustained by cultivating a resourceful future. We celebrate Indian woven textiles with the dream to put Indian handlooms on the global map and create a ripple effect for the people who adorn our clothes. We create silhouettes to accentuate sustainability with a belief in longevity by investing in timeless pieces and wearing then time and again that help you create your own style statement. Our label stands by the same virtues and does not conform to society’s fast fashion image and intends to set new goals for everyone to follow. What inspires you to create such designs with Handloom textile? Archana & Puneeth - We both grew up in families where handlooms and handcrafts were part of the tradition and culture that enriched our upbringing. The millennials today are mostly inclined towards fast fashion which directly affects the artisans and weavers of India. We develop a direct relationship with weavers through our garments,

thereby safeguarding interests of both the weavers and clients by providing quality fabrics sourced directly from the handloom weavers and by doing our bit in the revival of the fading handloom industry. The brand as such does a collection with only one fabric sourced uniquely from a single cottage industry across India. After the collection, we make it a point that we visit the cottage industry and interact with the weavers and the artisans showcasing our designs and do a photo shoot. We believe this will empower the weavers and acknowledge their work and give them a shimmer of hope for a better future. What’s the secret to using traditional textile styles in contemporary looks? Archana & Puneeth - The secret is to globalize the rich Indian handwoven textile at International fashion scenario. What are the bridal trends you are predicting? Archana and Puneeth - This winter, we are launching our bridal wear, we believe in fusing traditional embellishments, prints and fabrics with contemporary silhouettes like a long cape with a bralet and heavily flared lehenga to a monochrome lehenga sari. Who are your most favourite sari-clad women? Archana & Puneeth – Well, the most favorite is Indira Gandhi, Rekha and our mothers and grandmas. What inspired your latest collection? Archana & Puneeth – Art Deco Fashion depicting progressive modernity from the Late 1920’s. If you had a chance to collab with any designer who would it be and why? Archana & Puneeth – To accentuate our garments with accessories, we came across Tarun Oblum who has a great eye for finesse and detail in his craftsmanship Facebook Page- @archanaandpuneethofficial Contact: +91 7032400007

Over a decade they have completed a large number of prestigious projects in communities like Jayabheri Orange County, Lodha Bellezza, My Home Abra, Indu Fortune, and Mayfair Villasetc. They conclude, “Every Space is a story waiting to be told… and we help you to write it better”. Colors and Moods W

Whether you are completely redecorating or looking to make a small change in your home, choosing the right color scheme can be very difficult – especially when you want different rooms to provoke different moods. The colors of the rooms in your home are a direct reflection of your personality. While most of us may not spend a lot of time thinking about room color, it affects us every day. Room color can influence our moods and our thoughts. The bedroom, for example, should make you feel calm and relaxed, where as the dining room should make you feel more lively and sociable. Color affects people in many ways, depending on age, gender, ethnic background and climate. Certain colors or groups of colors tend to get a similar reaction from most people; the variations come from the shades or tones used. This is why it’s so important to choose colors wisely when it comes to decorating. The people who live in a home make it beautiful by choosing colors that reflect their preferences and personalities. The trick is to blend the colors you like into a pleasing combination. Choosing color combination can be an intimidating process. Color has the power to change the shape and size of furnishing, as well as the shape and size of the room. Selecting is not difficult if you equip yourself with some basic information about color and its effects. While choosing keep in mind that each color has a psychological value. Think about how certain colors make you feel; they can influence any emotion, from tranquility to rage.

INTERIOR

Purple

Purple is a rich, dramatic and sophisticated color that is historically the color of royalty and luxury. Deep purples give off a very romantic, mysterious and luxurious vibe and are great for sparking creativity. Lighter versions of purple, such as lavender and lilac are better options as they are calming and light they bring the same restful quality to bedrooms as blue does, where you want the mind to relax.

Neutrals

Neutrals like black, grey, white and brown are basic to the decorater’s tool kit. All- neutral schemes fall in and out of fashion, but their virtue lies in their flexibility: add color to liven things up; subtract it to calm things down. Black is best used in small doses as an accent. Every room needs a touch of black to ground the color scheme and give it depth. White instills the fear of dirt in even the messiest of people. But painting your walls white or off-white is a great way to help your home feel more spacious and open and the people within it more neutral. Not necessarily an energy nor clam inducing color, white gives a happy medium that leaves you feeling clean. White rooms give an automatic feel of cleanliness and purity. The color white itself stands for protection, innocence and goodness. Painting your ceilings white or off-white are easy options as it gives and illusion that the ceiling is higher and the room is bigger. Also, it goes just about every color on the walls.

Orange

Orange evokes excitement and enthusiasm, and is an energetic color. While not a good idea for a living room or for bedrooms, this color is great for an excersie room; it will bring out all the emotions that you need released during you need released during your fitness routine. In ancient cultures orange was believed to heal the lungs and increase energy levels. Orange can also stimulate your appetite so, if you are trying to be a little healthier and calorie conscious, we wouldn’t recommend this color for your kitchen.

INTERIOR Different colors and their effects

Color acts in three basic ways: active, neutral and passive. You can easily match every room’s color to your personal choices, to your taste and to the room’s purpose. Light colors are expansive and airy, and make your room seem larger and brighter. Dark colors are sophisticated and warm; they give large rooms a more intimate appearance.

Red

This color raises the room’s energy level. A super intense color, it can get your adrenaline pumping like no other hue. It is a good choice when you want to stir up excitement, particularly at night. In the living room or dining room, red draws people. While many people link red to romance and roses, it also linked to hostility and rage. It’s a great color to use for socializing. Red also raises your blood pressure and speeds up respiration and heart rate. If you are in this room when only after dark, you will be seeing it mostly by lamplight, when color will appear muted, rich and elegant.

Green

This color is considered the most restful color to the eye. Combining the refreshing quality of blue and the cheerfulness of yellow, green is suited for almost any room in the house. In the kitchen, green cools things down; in a family room or living room, it encourages unwinding but has enough warmth to promote comfort and togetherness. This is also a great color for your office as it symbolizes prosperity and helps to reduce anxiety and is known to be restorative, needs minimal clearing and encourage composure. It has a calming effect when used as a main color for decorating.

Yellow

It captures the joy of sunshine and communicates happiness. It is an excellent choice for kitchens, dining rooms and bathrooms, where it is energizing and uplifting. In halls, entries and small spaces, yellow can feel expansive and welcoming. Yellow is a cheery color, it is not a good choice for main color schemes. It is said that people are most likely to lose their temper in a yellow interior. Babies also seem to cry more in yellow rooms. This color tends to create feelings of frustration and anger. But it is also believed that yellow can stimulate the nerves and purify the body. TULIP - APRIL, 2018 61

INTERIOR

Blue

Blue is a very calming color that can make you feel centered, relaxed and serene. It is known to help lower blood pressure, clear the mind and help steady one’s breathing, and it is often recommended for bathrooms and bedrooms. A pastel blue that looks pretty on the paint chip can be an unpleasantly chilly on the walls andfurnishing, especially in a room that receives little natural light. If you opt for a light blue as the primary color in a room, try to balance it with warm hues for the furnishing and fabrics. To encourage relaxation in social areas such as living rooms or large kitchens, consider warmer blues, such as periwinkle, or bright blues, cerulean or turquoise. Blue is also known for having a calming effect when used as the main color of a room.

Do you really believe that ‘colours affect one’s mood?’ Colours have a huge effect on one’s mood. Light colours can calm you down and give peace whereas bright colours cheer you up. Colours like grey and black are very morbid. I call black a dead colour because I feel like it holds negative energy, captures things. I’m not a big fan of black and use it sparingly. Doing one wall of accent colour started more than a decade ago and that’s when people started having a blue or a red wall. I like the entire room to have colour as I prefer cool colours over warm ones.

inside outside exhibition at Krishna Oberoi. When I was growing up, interior designing didn’t exist as a subject, it all came under architecture. So I never wanted to be an “interior designer” but always wanted to do something creative in life.

What are some ways we can incorporate colors into our home? I like presenting colors on perishable items. I use this technique a lot. I try to bring in color through walls, upholstery, art, cushions. Cushions, curtains and walls are all perishable; they last for a few years only after which you have to change or repaint them. So the reason I prefer perishable things is because you can change them often by repainting, moving the art or reframing it.

INTERIOR Saloni Narayankar Interiors has been designing and developing spaces for the last 6 years. Saloni ventured into interiors because of her great sense of aesthetic and a keen eye for detail. Even though she did not have any formal training, she has been unique in her designs and her work has been widely appreciated. Saloni does not follow any styles or trends but rather tailors her designs to clients’ tastes and requirements. Her motto is to create a beautiful, clean and functional space. Over the last few years, the firm has designed some of the best properties in Hyderabad including The Blue Door, DildaarDhaba, Kobe Sizzlers, Symbiosis campus in Hyderabad and a clutch of other commercial and residential properties. Their work has been covered by some of the best design publications. Tell us about the first project you’ve worked on as an Interior designer? My first project was renovation of an 1800sft apartment. The client’s brief was to uplift an existing space that was very dull and drab. We used color to transform the place. Walls were redone in combination of neutrals and accents, pop of color was added in form of furnishings and accent pieces. Do you really believe that ‘colours affect one’s mood?’ Color is powerful. It has the ability to evoke serious emotional responses. Color can change how you feel when you are in a space and how you think and act. It can also affect you physically, including influencing your blood pressure, heart rate and breathing. Colors can impact us differentlyBlues have a calming and soothing impact on a space and can help you feel relaxed. It helps clear your mind. Green is refreshing and cheerful. It can be used anywhere as it is one color people are able to be around longest without being overwhelmed. Yellow adds a sunny, happy touch to your space. It can leave you with feeling of joy and liveliness. Red is an intense and energetic color with an exciting effect. It gets your adrenaline pumping and raises your BP and heart rate. Best used in accents. Black gives the impression of authority, power and independence. Go overboard and it can create feelings of depression. White automatically gives a feeling of cleanliness and purity. White spaces give an illusion of spaciousness and openness. We often choose colors we believe to be an expression of ourselves. Be it in our homes or our clothes. What are some ways we can incorporate colors into our home? Color has the incredible power of transforming bland rooms into spectacular ones. The right color choice can make a small room feel spacious or large room cozier and more intimate. When decorating a room, divide the colors into percentages- 60% dominant color (on walls), 30% secondary color (upholstery and soft furnishings) and 10% accent color (accent pieces/floral arrangements/ lampshades). Or the easy way to incorporate color is rugs, bold furniture, books, artwork, pillows and cushions. What are the latest trends in interior designing? Embellishments in the form of fringing, tufting, tassels will be big this year. You will see them on wall hangings, cushions and rugs. Gelato colors are going to be huge in the coming season. You can introduce these pretty colors on a single wall or multiple if you feel brave. The humble houseplant is fast becoming a must have. Add foliage and more foliage to your space. SIMPLICITY The Ultimate Sophistication Shankky Khanujaa first discovered his passion for design back in 2007. He completed his B.Com. and later joined Lakhotia Institute of Design to pursue a PG Diploma Course in Interior Design. His interest towards the subject bagged him a place as one of the top students in his batch. He also took up an internship, where he completed a residential design project; something he claims carved his path and forayed his entry into the world of interior design. Shankky has won many awards among which he holds his pride most is the one where he has been awarded by Col. Ajay & Team, Hyderabad for designing Genesis Clinics in 2017. Today Shankky runs the famed design firm, “SK Design Studio, from Concept to Reality”, which was established in 2012. “It is important to stay grounded and so he is focused on his strong points: Design and Planning. Being an interior designer isn’t just having someone to coordinate and speak to the carpenters or workers, it’s having someone who understands your requirements and works on it to give you an anticipated outcome; keeping in mind aesthetics, your taste and the functionality of the space”, he says. SK Design Studio specializes in designing home, office, showroom and restaurant spaces. Shankky explains, “Trends are shifting from traditional spaces to more of an open setup.” SK Design Studio likes to challenge itself with these kinds of refreshing experiences, in order to keep up with the times. When asked about his personal taste, he says, “I am not inclined to any one particular style or concept, but if I had to pick one, it would be the contemporary form: Contemporary, however, refers to decor that is much more current. Even designs that were contemporary in the past may no longer be considered contemporary but rather vintage. In five or ten years from now, it will likely have a different look and feel than what it is today. Contemporary design is ever-changing, due in part to the availability of (new) materials and pieces; I always lean towards a clean white style”. He believes that anything looks good in white: marble, upholstery, furniture or sofas. Shankky usually likes to keep it simple by using straight line concepts and sober color tones and not too flashy wallpapers or any kind of art on the index walls. He likes to experiment with a lot many things like exterior cladding material being used in the interior to make it look more natural. He also uses a lot of metal in the form of artifacts in his designing process to give the space a refined and a rustic feel. “Lighting plays a very important role in both parameters, one it’s a very good medium to throw a good amount of focus on the piece of work they create for their clients, so that it outstands in an extraordinary way and second, good amount of lighting is essential for creating different moods while one occupies the designed space by them”, he says. Fashion plays a big part, the cuts and colors of fabric serves as a

motivation in a lot of what his firm does. While travel also plays a huge part in inspiring him, everyday mundane objects like a pen or a vase can be stimulation too. When asked what his take is on the success of each project, he says, “Every individual project is very special to me, and it’s like a cherry on the cake when the client is totally satisfied.” He feels client’s satisfaction is the best reward one can ask for. What tips would you give to those who are planning to redecorate or for those designing a new home/space? First, decide a budget and concept for the house/space. Search the internet and keep some pictures aside. Second, always keep in mind that the space you live in shouldn’t be cluttered. Don’t overdo it. Third, the house is yours, so make sure it suits your taste and requirements. Don’t think about what people will say or whether they’ll judge. A few other points to bear in mind are: keep it low maintenance, do a thorough pest control before starting any work, and try to aim for an eco-friendly space. Your interior designer can assist you with that. While the design aspect is enjoyable for any designer, there are plenty of hurdles that come with the job. With interior design, they come in the form of delays and problems like disagreements with clients. How do you deal with that? I believe when disagreeing with someone it’s important to back oneself up with a lot of facts, present it in a polite manner, and also visually be able to show the client what they’re getting into. Here, a designer’s expertise really comes into play. Where delays are concerned, I advise on being proactive. SK DESIGN STUDIO’s approach is to monitor their bi-weekly plans and ensure that foreseeable are well communicated to the client in advance. “Chase Your Dreams But Always Know The Road That Will Lead You Home Again” - SK Design Studio… From Concept To Reality! AUTOMOBILE

The Mighty Velar Here’s what Saif Quadri has to say about his brand new Land Rover Range Rover Velar: “Being an avid traveller, I’ve driven and also have been driven around in some of the best cars across the world. I like my cars to have a bit of a history behind them, and Brit automobiles have always been my thing. I have been driving a Jaguar all this while! In the SUVs my choice was always the Range Rover considering the legacy of luxury it holds. This flagship model is now in its fourth generation and it just made perfect sense to own it. I was ecstatic when I was told they were launching in the Velar in India close on the heels of its global launch. More so the new range Rover Velar is a CBU! It looks like something straight out of Netflix’s Black Mirror series. It has adopted the Range Rover yacht design and is extremely sleek and very futuristic on the outside as well the inside. The interiors are like a bachelor pad on wheels- with top-notch leather seatsvery classy. It’s longer and lower than the other Range Rover models with a lower roof height. Once you climb up into the new Velar, sit down on the plush leather recliner, push the start button- the only physician knob you’ll touch,-the rest is all touchscreen- you’ll actually play out your very own “Need for Speed” series. What really hooked me are the infotainment options with the double touch screen set-up. The top screen does all the heavy lifting, with navigation and music mainly controlled through that. The dual-zone climate control, heated massage seats, sunroof, adaptive cruise control, Wi-Fi Internet connectivity, and various other comforts—all work perfectly in sync. The Velar’s ride-quality is, as expected -super smooth. You still feel the surface of the road—you don’t just ride over the top of everything—but bumps and potholes and terrain changes are softened enough that every movement seems considered and controlled. The Velar simply flies through corners. Sitting inside, you’ll never doubt that this is a high-calibre vehicle. The drive is a mind-blowing experience. If you want equipment, style, space and the true meaning of luxury, the Velar makes quite a compelling case.Globally, everyone who will eventually buy a Range Rover Velar understands what a Range Rover is all about. The Range Rover’s DNA totally differentiates it from other cars”. TULIP - APRIL, 2018 65
