on being ‘Bold and Adventures’ In an exclusive with Kalki Koechlin, she shares about her new adventure in collaboration with Hidesign. Her new collection is in stores and being loved by everyone who associate with adventure and love experimenting with their style. Read on to know more about what she loves and what’s coming up next. How did you come up with collaboration with Hidesign? My connection with Dilip Kapur goes back to my childhood. We both come from Pondicherry, the common roots and ideals were great starting point. There is comfort and shared history and values. When he approached me to collaborate I was surprised, since I had no idea about designing or the business. We sat and discussed about my taste and we kind of went through my whole wardrobe of what bags I already have. We went through Instagram to understand my followers that were mostly women from 15 to 35. While I did contribute, I also gained a lot of insight; I learnt a lot about the business and also found out who my market is. At the end of it I have better understanding of leather and the types of it, use of vegetable tan and so much more. We see that you are conscious about the brands you chose to endorse. What led to your association with Hidesign? Its quality has been consistent for years, 90% of its employees are women, there’s the Pondicherry connection, I am learning something new with designing. Tell us more about your latest collection with Hidesign? It’s called ‘She loves Adventure’ and it’s a daring collection. It’s got ADVENTURE and POWER in caps written all over it. The collection has sharp edgy work bags for the boss lady, stylish travel options for the hitchhiker, beach worthy fashion for the surfer, clutches and party bags when you want to take it a notch up, and bold designs when you want show who’s in control.Coming up with the second collection was more challenging. It pushed us to create something strong and work hard on the design and the theme. We discussed ideas together, fought over them and tried to figure something that works for both the brand and for me that is relevant and happening. The core idea of being courageous and stepping up to a challenge helped us come up with some bold modern designs. I looked at women around me, thought about what their days are like, what they put in their bags, and where they would go if they had no restrictions. Does designing bags help in enhancing your creativity? For sure. You get to think about what women want, as most of my collection is for women though I’m all for gender fluidity and hope men wear the bags too! You start understanding about people who follow you and the market better. What are your recommendations from the latest collection? The sporty bags like the Motor and Surfer ranges and the adventure bags like Gypsy and Rebel. Between theatre and movies, what do you think is your true calling? This is a question people always ask me and I think it’s like choosing between a mother and father. I love both of them and they are very different. Theatre is my first love but there is realism to film. What are your upcoming projects? Made in heaven on Amazon prime is out and I am also working on an experimental Tamil project called Emma and Angel. 16 APRIL, 2019 TULIP

“I always value products that have a story. Hidesign, with its commitment to vegetable tanning and slow craftsmanship, has been a brand I have admired for years. A compilation of all things we are obsessing over this month

Russian Doll

Coming in under the radar of Netflix’s Feb. 2019 releases, this dark, druggy delight subverts a ton of traditions to positive results. A lot of that comes from audiences coming in hopefully-cold, and getting surprised by the show’s premise and inner workings, so let’s stay spoiler-free. The first thing you should know is that Russian Doll is the funny and emotional series that Natasha Lyonne (its star, co-creator, writer, and director) has long since deserved, as she’s spent most of her career as a co-star and not a lead. Next up, as Todd VanDerWeffpointed out, Russian Dolls goes beyond having a strong, brash female lead, and places men in supporting roles — that aren’t quite fleshed out, but help drive the story — typically made for women.

Hidden Language of the Soul - By Jessica David

Dance is a beautiful art form in so many different cultures across the globe. It is one way through which artists communicate in their own manner and this is practised by millions of people. Every year, since 1982, on 29th April, we globally celebrate International Dance Day. It happens to be the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, who was the creator of modern ballet. The purpose of this International Dance Day is to celebrate the various forms of dance across all cultural and political barriers to revel in the universality of this dance form to bring people together with a common language - dance! We present to you some of the niche dancers of Hyderabad who believe in bringing their passion to the table and are dance legends in their own way! TULIP - APRIL, 2019 23

Sonu MJ An Aeronautical Engineer by profession, his intense passion towards dance led him to leave engineering and get into full time dance training. Sonu specialises in Bollywood and Lyrical Hip Hop. He has this unique talent of perfecting feminine dance movements with as much grace as a woman can. His strength lies in the way he expresses when he dances and to him it is something empowering. He started his dance career at the age of 12 when he initially realised his passion towards dance and put in all his focus on nurturing this passion. He got himself enrolled in a leading dance studio in Hyderabad and gave his best efforts to be the most versatile instructor during that time. He worked as a background dancer in various events and shows and finally landed his first break as the leading choreographer for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He considers it to be the turning point in his life for which he is extremely grateful. He has choreographed the official song for Sunrisers Hyderabad and was also a choreographer for 93.5 REDFM for Spread the Smile event. Apart from this, he has been an official choreographer for companies like Wipro, Aveva and Realpage to name a few. He has also choreographed many Big fat Indian Weddings; one of them being Saina Mirza’s Sister- Anam’s Wedding Sangeet. There was a point in life when people used to question him about his choice and decision of choosing dance over his lush aeronautical engineering profession. His simple answer to the never ending questions was that he chose what made him happy by turning his passion into his profession. Back in 2000 when the popular Shiamak Davar classes had started in the city, her sister was all geared up to enroll her for the same, but the bubble of joy burst in no time as they couldn’t afford the fee. Inspite of that, Nicy still kept going and actively grabbed all the opportunities that came her way, never stopping.

Nicy Joseph Having started dance at a teeny age of four, the journey to live her passion had been an amusing ride with its ups and downs. She professionally embraced dance when she was all of 10 and has never looked back since. She reckons Contemporary dance to be her forte because the form in itself allows her to express her deepest emotions. Contemporary style is a combination of various dance genres like ballet, jazz, lyrical and modern dance. She started training for it under Shiamak Davar back in 2006 that formed the foundation to her journey. In 2015, she had the opportunity to establish her own company, thus exploring her creativity as well as encouraging many others to this passion called Dance. Dance had always been the voice of her soul; to manifest her state of mind via movement of body. It always brought out the best in her and contributes largely to the person she is today. Back in the day, she received major support from her sisters, who believed in everything she believed in and motivated her. She reminisces the times when her elder sister used her salary to enrol her in almost all the dance competitions that the city hosted. She would

In 2006 when her sister got a job, the first thing she did was to enroll her for the Shiamak classes with her salary, thus fulfilling Nicy’s greatest dream. Given her passion and commitment to dance, she was immediately promoted after her beginners batch, where she skipped all levels and got admitted into the special potential batch the most superior level from which students were chosen to become instructors! At 19 years, Nicy became an instructor with the company. She reflects how managing both studies and work had been a roller coaster ride. It started to get very difficult for her parents to accept or understand her passion and ambitions in the field of dance. They never believed that she could make a living out of it or progress further. However, her never give up attitude and clear vision drove her to success. Today they take pride when they see her train celebrities, shaping future Tollywood stars by training celebrity children and choreographing spectacular sangeet and corporate events, to name a few. Life has just taken the direction which I always dreamt of; to live my dream, to live dance! My advise to anyone would be to believe in themselves!

Srikanth Jayanthi Originally from Vizag, this uber-cool guy is the life and soul of Zumba sessions at the highly popular Cult.fit at Begumpet. He has specialised in Lyrical Hip Hop, Freestyle, House, Krumping and Indian Folk, to name a few. The first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the name Srikanth is Energy. A powerhouse of energy, fast dancing and perfection; he can give tough competition to the best of the best. The will to be an absolute perfectionist and give his 500 percent is something that largely makes him unique among everybody. Since childhood he was majorly inspired by Prabhu Deva. Dance was something that came naturally to him. Looking at the ease with which he was able to emulate any dance steps, his mother enrolled him into dance class at the age of fourteen under his Guru, Max Santosh. Slowly he started performing at various shows. As he was raised by a single mother, at the age of sixteen his family faced a ton of issues and went through financial crisis. In order to support them, he started conducting dance classes. He struggled for eight years to become a choreographer and also worked as a background dancer during this period, just to raise any form of income. Be it day or night, his struggle to sustain himself was a constant competition in his field. He remembers forming his own team so that they could thrive together in this beautiful field of dance and perform at shows, only to have them desert him in the want of better offers. He took the hit in his stride and focused more on himself and his dance and never allowed the depression to engulf him. He looked for jobs everywhere to support his daily expenses until he chanced upon a call from a leading institute in Hyderabad to teach dance. He recollects that to be the stepping stone to his career. He moved cities and started living his passion. It was during that time when the craze for Zumba was booming. To align himself with the current trend, he enrolled himself in the Zumba certification course and got certified as a Zumba trainer. With his unique style and perfectly fast paced dance, people started to recognise him by the name Sri. Currently he’s the senior trainer in Dance Fitness, Zumba and Prowl here at Cult.fit. The satisfaction and joy that comes from making people happy and working on their fitness is something indescribable to him.

Harsha Maheshwari

Harsha Maheshwari is an artist, dance and fitness enthusiast with the stage name KOMET(Knowledge Of Movement with Evolution of Technique). She dances, acts and brings together artists from various parts of the world together through her studio- HAPPY HOURS DANCE PLACE, located at Begumpet. She indulges in organising and marketing events which play a huge role in encouraging a lot of talented artists to take up this profession on a full time basis. She has also organised dance workshops and camps at national and international level for the PRIVILEGED. Under the title THE MAGICAL WORLD OF DANCE , she has organised and been a part of 50+ events for the underprivileged, physically challenged, orphanages and a few highly reputed NGO’s of the city. A certified Sujok specialist- level 6, an active member in the theatre groups of Hyderabad, a certified Zumba Instructor with an experience of 4 years, the mentor for Miss Hyderabad 2017, judge of various regional and national level dance competitions, performer for YouTube fan fest 2018 and GES 2017 that was choreographed by Padmashri awardee Ananda Shankar Jayanth, she has a ton of achievements to be proud about. She was also a 4 times TEDx speaker at TEDxJubilee Hills 2018 and TEDxGlendale academy. Along with her team, they have performed at TEDxHyderabad 2017 and TEDxYouth 2018. Lately she has stopped tagging herself as a “hip hop dancer” or “bharatanatyam dancer”. But if she had to choose a dance form for the International Dance Day, she’d like to talk about Waacking, which she has been training on the most. Her teacher from LA, Kumari Suraj and she have not only organised workshops where hundreds of enthusiasts came to learn, but also made them compete by organising BATTLES. Started in 1970’s in LA’s gay clubs, WAACKING - is a dance form which set free the gay’s in the clubs to express and connect to their movement. They found freedom in clubs to be whoever they truly were and disco music connected them the most. It has some essential elements such as Waack, Punk and pose. She found waacking super interesting and thrilling because it’s a dance form that makes people love themselves and the story telling and expression through waacking is super RAW. Her movement with dance and #HEALnotHate got her waacking in no time. She knew that her purpose in life was to spread love and make people fall in love with themselves, so this dance form came just in time when she started kicking the fear of judgement out and loving herself more. Dance day is for everyone, everyone who loves music and movement. Right from dancing on the streets and clubs to dancing in the washrooms, dance is a language which unites people and apart from great entertainment, it is an amazing way to express yourself rather than impress and fit in. She recommends Happy Hours Dance Place for anyone who wants to have a life changing experience with Dance.

Apooh Mahi An all style dancer by heart, her foundation, her pillar and her roots are grounded, not in the form, but the culture “Hip Hop!” Passionate about dance from a very young age, she has been teaching basic dance forms and a variety of different styles for the last 7 years, apart from choreographing for different occasions. However, inspite of the various dance forms that she enjoys on a daily basis, Hip Hop is her ultimate Happy Place. Her Guru, Swapnil ExT Kumar of the Proximity Crew was her very first instructor when she was just 16. He was the one who saw what great potential she possessed and pushed her to be who she is today. Ryan Martyr is her biggest inspiration who taught her to finally come out of the cloak of invisibility, fear and the whole “what would people think” extravaganza. No matter what music is being played, it automatically takes over her body and the movements come very naturally to her. She refrains from being overly competitive about showing off skills and was never a fan of it, but she definitely loves dancing, irrespective of the place and people. If I start to revel in the music, that’s cue for you to flash the spotlight on me, because I’ll be lost until someone hits the pause button. Dancing is a form of meditation for her. People often ask her “how do you stay so happy?” Her response is “I dance and emote through every movement irrespective of music” and that’s basically what keeps her happy. She is a little dynamite full of vibrant energy and when she blows up, she will engulf everyone in her awe inspiring dance. She loves the vibe at the classes held at “HY Dance Studio”, Harsha’s “Happy Hours Dance Place” and her fam’s “Diwakar’s Gotta Dance” She considers that ‘8 steps away from turning into a killer dancer’.

Summer is full of wonderful things — but melting makeup, smeared eyeliner, and super-sticky lipstick are not among them. We asked our city’s favourite artists to spill her best tips for summer makeup looks, skincare hacks and tips for keeping makeup looking fresh and pretty, even when the weather is working against you.

From The Expert- Aliya

Barely there is the mantra when it comes to the base. Keep your base soft and natural, using something like a tinted moisturiser or a BB cream which has SPF for a healthier skin.

Apply the product only where it’s needed, using fewer products and focusing more on the key features. Keep the skin as natural as possible, let your skincare products like your moisturiser fully absorb into the skin before buffing in a BB Crème or a foundation, giving you the option to build coverage where needed. Set and lock everything with very minimal loose powder.

Enhance the eyes with browns, avoid using blacks. Use a soft brown liner or you can blend and diffuse the brown liner on the lid, add some waterproof mascara to finish the look.

Choose a natural looking blush in a cream or powder form, applied in a blur way, blending outwards for a softer look.

Baig

Take matte shade of a bronzer to warm up the complexion. Apply where the sun would naturally hit the face will make you look chiseled at the same time giving that glow and warmth the skin needs. Sweep from the temples, down the cheek, along with jawline in a ‘W’ shape. Buff and blend together with the blush.

When it comes to lips, spotted at the runway this season were fresh, floral lip tones. Pinks, corals, peaches etc, layer then over the lips and blur the edges using your fingers to create a fresh wash of colour on the lips. This is a beautiful way to achieve that effortless summer vibe.

From The Expert- Mahdiyeh During summer season, I suggest 4 skin essentials to all my brides and customers. Follow these religiously to achieve the perfectly hydrated summer skin because your skin is going to represent you for a very long time! •

Exfoliate: For any treatment or cream to work on your skin it needs to be clean. Exfoliate at regular intervals to slough away the accumulated dead skin cells that are clogging your pores and forming a layer on your skin.

Darvesh

Apply Sunscreen: Protect ur skin with sunscreen. Sun Ray’s are a cause for many skin issues like pigmentation fine lines dry skin brown spots etc. Min SPF is 30 and keep reapplying every few hours.

My favourites- la shield glenmark sunscreen spf 40 and Lacto calamine sun shield. Address : Shantinagar Road No.4, Opp Hockey Ground, Masab Tank. Ph : 9100063200

My favourites- Everyuth walnut scrub, St Ives scrub •

Drink Water: The problem with summer is it makes u sweat alot making ur cells loose water quickly so to maintain moisture levels in ur body and not feel weak or faint due to dehydration u need to keep a check on your water drinking game and get it right.

Easter tales Hope, Love and Joy! Easter spells out beauty. The rare beauty of a new life. Easter is a Christian holiday of high religious significance that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. According to the New Testament of the Bible, Jesus rose from death three days after being crucified by the Romans around 30 A.D. The holiday concludes the “Passion of Christ,” that begins with Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, prayer and sacrifice and ends with Holy Week, which includes Maundy Thursday (the celebration of Jesus’ Last Supper with his 12 Apostles), Good Friday (on which Jesus’ crucifixion is observed), and the glorious Easter Sunday where we greet each other saying “Christ is Risen, indeed!” Easter 2019 is on Sunday, April 21, but Easter, along with Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday and the respective events occur on a different date each year, depending on the Gregorian Calendar. In the wake of the modern era and a number of Easter traditions that usually make up for a well spent Easter, we haven’t forgotten the true essence of Easter. Let us take you on a journey of how a typical Easter is celebrated by people around here! - By Jessica David

SPECIAL

Food and Travel Blogger Easter is one of the most prominent days for Christians all over the world. The day is marked as the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who rose from the dead. Growing up, it’s been a tradition of sorts to start the Easter celebration with a traditional Easter Vigil Mass that is held in the hours of darkness between sunset of Holy Saturday and Sunrise on Easter Day. Easter is also a perfect excuse for us to indulge in festival cooking and eating out. While hot cross buns are typically served on Good Friday, we reserve the good food for the feast on Sunday, which usually includes Chicken Roast, Spicy Honey-Glazed lamb Chops, Fluffy Buttery Cinnamon Cake & Caramel Custard. In between Church and festival cooking – an Easter Brunch at Novotel HICC or at Westin Hyderabad is mandatory. And no Easter celebration is complete without gifting each other a basketful of eggs or an Easter bunny made of chocolate or marzipan – these bring their own unique charm to the celebrations while maintaining age-old traditions.

Anusha Mondal

Music Teacher, International School of Hyderabad. Easter is one festival that is extremely close to my heart. Every year, I specially look forward to this day because unlike other festivals that get over in a day or two, this one stretches over an entire period of 40 days, commencing on Ash Wednesday and ending on Easter Sunday. This period before Easter is called “Lent”. Lent is a season for me to reflect on my life and seek God by fasting and meditating on His Word. We observe the 40 days of Lent by fasting and praying and refraining from food and festivities and typically anything that we enjoy eating/doing, the most. In doing so, we try to emulate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days before he was crucified. The essence of Easter for me is celebrating “God’s Love” for mankind. On a typical Easter Day, you would find me attending the sunrise service at church, which is a beautiful and breathtaking sight in itself. Post this, I usually head out to a lovely breakfast with all my church friends where we indulge in great food with great company. Lunch is always a family affair with my entire family gathering together and making elaborate plans. Since we’re comprised of a large bunch of foodies, we all take our food very, very seriously! As a Hyderabadi, we try to bring the best to the table, right from a typical Hyderabadi cuisine, to an extravagant Continental spread. You will find it all on our table. This is followed by an amazing quality time that we as a family share and enjoy. All in all, Easter is a time filled with gratitude for what Christ has done for me and the celebration of a forgiven, grace-filled life with family and friends!

Healthcare Professional, Global Health. Easter is always such a special time in my family. Not only is it special religiously, but it is a time to reflect and move on to new beginnings. There is beauty that surrounds the earth. The grass is finally greener, the flowers have bloomed and the weather has warmed up here. A really special Easter was when I was 6 years old. I remember my maternal grandfather waking me up very early to go to church. But what he didn’t tell me was that he had something really special hidden under my pillow. He placed a large marzipan egg filled with candy. At such a young age, nothing could have made me happier than to break that egg and reveal its contents. Now, our Easters are more relaxing. Every Easter we dress up in pastel colored outfits and go to church in the morning. Church service is filled with a large choir singing, trumpets sounding and an orchestra that will blow your mind! The service is so moving that you can really feel the peace and happiness that surrounds the place. After Church service, all of our family gathers together at our house for a special lunch. We usually do a fusion of Indian and American food. My Mom makes her infamous Biryani and I bake every decadent dessert you can imagine. After lunch, there is always a photo session with the entire family which consumes most of the afternoon! We also sit together and talk, sometimes we watch old home videos or look through old photo albums. Easter is always a time filled with family and friends and I think thats what makes it so heart warming.

ILDLIFE & ILDERNESS

A diehard fan of wildlife photography, pursuing his passion for over five years now by visiting forests over 5 to 6 times a year...a full-time entrepreneur, a visual storyteller and a firm believer that every picture has its own story. Presenting to you-

Ajeet Gurditta...

60 APRIL, 2019 TULIP

What made you get passionate about wildlife photography? Wildlife Photography brings me closer to Wildlife, where I’m able to put conscious effort into observing and anticipating animal behaviour closely over a period of time and then try to capture the moment for eternity. Capturing those natural historic moments motivates me the most. Showcasing the beauty of nature and wildlife in particular to the world is an inspiration in itself. When this cycle of experiencing, capturing and showcasing began, I started getting passionate about doing better and better.

TRAVEL

Are you formally taught or a self-taught photographer? Whatever I have learnt, I have learnt through experimentation. I see lots of training videos on YouTube. I closely follow the works of top photographers and try to emulate them on the field. Is the Photography gear used for wildlife photography different from that of regular Photography? Yes, there is a tremendous difference in the gear what we use for wildlife photography. For getting good pictures in the Wild, there are three things that you should look for in a camera. They are ISO performance, High Shutter Speed and Frames per second (FPS). A basic camera ISO range varies from 100 to 6400, whereas the high end Camera will give you an ISO ranging from 100 to 102400 which is useful for clicking the subject in extreme low light conditions. A good Shutter Speed helps in getting a perfect freeze shot, like a bird in flight or a tiger chasing its prey. The high-end camera gives you a shutter speed of 1/8000 of a second, thereby giving you a perfect action shot. The third and the most important thing is the frames per ssecond. A basic camera will give you 4 to 5 frames per second whereas the high-end camera will give you 12 frames per second thereby ensuring that you don’t miss any part of the action. What are the basic traits of being a wildlife photographer? Some traits or what I call it, “the must-have qualities”, of a good wildlife photographer are Patience, anticipation, endurance, ability to handle extreme weather conditions, swiftness and a die-hard passion to go that extra mile. When shooting animals, what do you find most challenging? In wildlife, most of the actions happen for a fraction of a second and you can’t lose the window of opportunity. If you miss the action you will never get a second chance. You cannot put your guard down when you are on the field, you always have to be ready all the time or repent for a lifetime. So staying alert and ready all the time is pretty challenging. Among your works, which one is your favourite? There are many pictures that are close to my heart, out of which my favourite image is the one clicked at Jim Corbett National Park. It’s one of my favourites especially because it has one of the most beautiful tigresses in an amazing picturesque landscape of Ramganga river of Corbett in one frame. Such a shot is a dream frame for any photographer. Whose work has influenced you the most? Great pictures happen when skills meet an opportunity. There are many skilled photographers whose pictures have cast a major influence on my work. Few names that come to my mind are David Yarrow, Mark Smith, Sudhir Shivaram, Kiran Poonacha, Mohan Thomas and others. What are your future goals? Is there any place in the world you want to go if given a chance to pick? In the years to come, I would like to be counted among the top ten Wildlife photographers in the country. I have long cherished the dream to click Grizzly bears, which are found in Alaska. Any advice to aspiring wildlife photographers? Willingness to learn and improve oneself is an attitude which any aspiring wildlife photographer should possess. Have a camera handy and keep clicking any subject near you like birds, insects or other species. Keep experimenting and keep learning from your mistakes. Most importantly be a self-learner and do not hesitate to ask for help from people who are better than you. TIPS & TRICKS

Painting: Bring your bedroom and/or lounge alive with a dash of cherry blossoms

A horse figurine: Stately, unfinished, almost semi-done, this figurine is all about pride and class. This figurine should find its place of pride in the centre of your living room

Antique clock: Add a sense of history to a room that has contemporary art and modern elements.

A mirror: Simple in design and elegant in looks, this mirror is a perfect piece for your bedroom or a passageway at home. If you’re placing this in your bedroom, make sure that its corner is free of clutter and other adornments. This mirror demands its own space. If you’re placing this in the passageway, place this at the end of the passage. Candle holders: These candle holders are statement pieces that work as terrific center-pieces, too. Place them on an antique trunk that has a complementing and contrasting effect TULIP - APRIL, 2019 63

UNNATI PINGLE

Much of her portfolio resembles a makeover lookbook and her revamped spaces are designed without fundamentally altering anything. Unnati Pingle is an interior designer who can turn a rather boring bungalow into a colorful memento. She says that curating work of art for her now is like “walking into a great maze and emerging out of it with a masterpiece.” Her clients include Surekha group of industries, Ohris, etc. She runs a design firm called Unnati Pingle Design Studio that believes in the process, exceptional finishes and a dash of drama to create interior and architectural spaces. The firm’s design style is majorly contemporary with elements of tradition and a burst of colour. The Principal Architect, Unnati’s interests lie in travel, culture, nature and colors and they inspire her design sensibilities.

TIPS & TRICKS She believes in using as much of the old things that one already owns to lend a newer look to a space. “Like, glamming up a dining table with silk and glass on top of the existing wooden frame,” she suggests. Her own home is filled with things like old pickle jars and bird cages that are creatively used as planters. “Changing the color of furnishings and adding wallpapers is perhaps the simplest way to enliven a dull space,” says Pingle. Green has always been her “starting point” and she throws in the most unusual color combinations for effect. “Why would someone want to blend lime green with red, purple or orange and grey? But I would say, why not. The only rules are those that you make,” she says. So go ahead and throw some color!

He’s also a firm believer that good client relationships improve the creative process and executes a slick, modern look or traditional interiors with equal confidence. AANDH is headed by the husband wife duo Aamir and Hameeda. Their extensive and versatile body of work ranges from interior design of residences, corporate offices, retail stores and hospitality spaces. They have in the past decade of practice won up to 20 National and Regional Awards for Excellence in Design, including the Hafele Trends Excellence Award in Interior Design in 2016 and 2017 and have won many National and Regional Awards by IIID.Their minimalistic, urban chic designs make them stand apart in the residential and retail space design. They make use of a lot of salvaged recyclable material in their various projects and reinterpret them with a quirky and contemporary design sensibility, aka - modern traditionalism. They love discovering their clients’ vision and approach each project with an open mind to create something unique. Their interest in global and local trends in fashion, lifestyle, travel and design is reflected in their varied palette of retail spaces, breweries, restaurants and residential projects. Their past projects range from individual home owners to hospitality and restaurant chains such as Prost, Urban Asia, F Cafe, to retail spaces like Orion, SuhaniPittie, L.BajrangPershadJewellers, etc.

TIPS & TRICKS To keep it simple, spacious and practical, with lots of storage. A stylish, modern way of decorating with Art Deco in mind is to include just a few touches and not overcrowd the room with geometric elements. It’s all about creating discrete look with rich colours or elegant materials with zigzags and sharply angled and cubist forms. Mutued hues, dramatic accent pieces, mood lighting and clever spatial planning can be done to transform your house. Use of modern furniture with antiques of 40s and 50s add a touch of royalty to a room. TULIP - APRIL, 2019 65

TIPS & TRICKS Having a green space adds a splash of color to your place. As long as you have an empty wall or some backyard space, you can easily design this space and incorporate some greenery into it. We have some great tips for you to get started with some basics. A great approach when you don’t want to spend a bomb on the interiors is to start using plants on walls and corners to build a Vertical Garden. What you need to start with is • Choose the area where you want to build your vertical garden - It can be as extensive as a boundary wall or even a small balcony wall, as long as it gets some natural light • You can also create a freestanding green wall that can act as a movable partition, making it an amazing option to break the monotony by changing its position every now and then • Plants can be chosen as per the dynamics of the light. You will find many plants that are economical and easy to maintain • You can now make a DIY Vertical garden with basic things around you like frames made from wood, lanterns, cages etc. The décor pieces that may be lying at home can actually create an aesthetic corner in your houses • Selection of plants always depends on the environment around, and can be chosen with a little help from any plant lovers.

RAMYA KODURI & SWARNA VEMULAPALLI A truly dynamic duo, Swarna and Ramya are both engineers who followed their hearts and nursed their passion for gardening, only to give way to their establishment, Peace Lily in the year 2016, which is a luxuriant project, sprung from the minds of these two friends. Since its inception, Peacelily has methodically grown to become one of the area’s well-known products. They always wanted to start something of their own, and Ramya’s love for plants along with Swarna’s background in construction management helped them conceptualise ‘green space designing’. Miniature gardening and terrariums seemed like a perfect start to this journey, and today, they’ve expanded into offering unique green space designs as well. They make every offering special. Be it a miniature that shows an old couple having coffee in the terrarium, or vertical gardens, everything is designed with the element of human emotions. The products are also quirky, ecofriendly, and perfect in either households or office spaces. While they overcame their own challenges and inhibitions, Swarna and Ramya share that their biggest accomplishment was surviving in this competitive world. The reasons for their success include: not taking things for granted; concentrating on every small detail; taking customer feedback and making changes; and not shying from getting their hands dirty. 66 APRIL, 2019 TULIP

A few more simple ways to bring the greenery into your house is to invest on a green center table with plants instead of an expensive coffee table. MOVIES Movie Reviews

Notebook Adapted by screenwriter Darab Farooqui from Teacher’s Diary, Thailand’s official entry for the Oscars in 2014, Notebook transports the original tale from a rural school to a remote location in the Valley, where a small institution floating in a lake is on the verge of being shut because it does not have a teacher. The handful of students who once attended the school are at a loose end. An ex-soldier, Kabir Kaul (Iqbal), a Kashmiri Pandit nursing the guilt of having failed to save a boy from a landmine, arrives to fill the breach. Abbas Kiarostami kind of touches - a protagonist trying to seek a vantage point from where he can connect his handset to a mobile telephone service - are inevitable in a location such as this. The network is spotty here. A boatman tells Kabir that mobiles work in this part of the world only when the mausam (weather) and mahaul (environment) are conducive, which, he hastens to add, is rarely the case.

Captain Marvel “Captain Marvel” mostly takes place in the mid-1990s, and feels like it was made then, too, in terms of its technical prowess and emotional depth. This is not a compliment. As for the former, perhaps that was intentional—yet another example of wallowing in period nostalgia alongside the grunge chic and girl-power anthems. The prolonged intro in space and the big action sequences have a cheesy, retro feel to them that can be amusing but also inscrutable. Speaking of music, the folks behind “Captain Marvel” spared no expense on the film’s soundtrack, including songs from such female-driven ‘90s acts as TLC, Garbage, Elastica, Salt-n-Pepa and a painfully on-thenose use of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl” during a particularly elaborate fight scene. The girl power (and grrl power) ring out loud and clear, if a bit hollow.

118 Goutham (Kalyan Ram) is an investigative journalist on a mission to uncover the truth about the girl (Nivetha Thomas) he dreams about. Who is she and why does he dream of her being in danger forms the crux of the story. In Alan Moore’s famed graphic novel V for Vendetta, there’s a line that goes, “Behind this mask there is more than just flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea... and ideas are bulletproof.” It’s almost like cinematographerturned-director KV Guhan decided to play along with that thought and turn it into a gripping tale filled with innocence, love, smokescreens, deceit and murder. And boy, did he succeed for most part!
