Karma

A lounge cum bistro on the highest level of Hyderabad, Karma is both a day and night place for you to chill and have lots of fun. The outside seating gives you a complete view of the city with the greenery of KBR park. Swings are available to sip your cocktails and have an easy breezy time. Inside it’s all about dancing, and partying. Coming to the menu, it is a mix of street food salads, continental, Italian, platters and more. We chose to have stuffed mushrooms that were served in a mini giant wheel platter which made it an outstanding presentation; next up was the classic favourite malai broccoli that was creamy and tasteful. We got to taste the one of a kind piping hot Thai soup which was nothing less than a pleasure to have in this weather. The best of all was the dal chawal acharni, a fusion dish of a crispy shell outside that bursts into your home made dal chawal. When you move on to the Mains don’t forget to try the Pizza pe Pizza, it is a pizza placed on top of another one with different toppings, and it is so innovative and lip-smacking. The drinks call for the Kala Khatta Mojito an ideal street drink topped with bar masala. 8-2-120/113, Road Number 2, Venkat Nagar, Banjara Hills, Phone: 040 3316 5167 18 JULY, 2017 - TULIP

Just like how the name sounds, Desiklub is one place where you can groove to the popular desi beats while the most desi street food is served on your table. The vibe is all lit up and is such a remarkable night place, when the breeze hits you from the view of the hustling Jubilee Hills. The menu is quite notable with the most ground-breaking names and fusion dishes. Utterly Butterly Baked Vada Pav is an authentic bite- sized vada pav buttered and filled in with the aloo masala. Chitthi Aai Hai, an appetizer is full of surprises, spicy paneer filled into a rumali roti which is wrapped like an envelope; it is one of the most delightful dishes in their menu. Paneer roller coaster was another pick that is mixed with crunchy onions, cheese and more, impeccably delectable. Among the mocktails a must have here is the Mango Duet ice-cream soda, which is prepared with your childhood much-loved mango duet and the icecream soda underneath! The mains call for the Tiffin box, the most astounding “ghar ka khana , rumali roti, served with the most delicious dal and mix vegetable, papad and salad. We ended our meal with the sizzlers which is called the Hum Saath Saath Hai, which is a combination of tawa noodles and chilli paneer and it completely sizzles your taste buds. How has the journey been by far? A: It’s been exhilarating; every day is an adventure of trying something new. FASHION Akhil Akkineni was spotted in a Manish Malhotra creation. A white classic sherwani with a printed waist coat and chudidar. Elegance personified.

Meghna is all decked up in a single color - GOLD, which makes her look so elegant and classy. We are sure she tuned quite a few heads in this ensemble.

ALL DECKED UP!

Weddings call for the best outfits right off the rack. We spotted quite a few people who made sure they were in the spotlight in the weddings in the past. We have gathered all the looks for you and created the best dressed people of all times. Manasa mixed both contemporary and traditional in a golden benarasi saree and a shocking pink blouse. So on point.

Sirisha Vanka blends in a beige lace saree with a classy full sleeves green blouse. She let her hair down which just does all the magic here!

Shoaib Malik gives some tough competition when it comes to being one of the best dressed men. The red sherwani and the brown chudidar are so ideal for the evening; the juttis simply steal the show.

FASHION Mustafa Alam Khan chose to look dapper in a navy blue suit, teamed with a red tie. We are always up for the signature looks.

Krishna Bhupal looks ravishing in a black suit, everybody’s favorite for such occasions. There was a pop of bottle green that added so much to the attire.

Akruthi dresses up in an blush pink net saree, which is intricately embroidered, paired with heavy earrings and a chic updo.

Sailaja defines a perfect South Indian girl who is traditionally dressed in this beautiful saree. The kamar pata & the maangteeka complete the look.

Metallics are in rage and Laxmi Manchu does it right with this golden long anarkali and a printed floral pink dupatta. Don’t miss out in the jhumkas that look so dramatic and how?

Don’t be a Bridezilla!!

SPECIAL

Follow these helpful suggestions by stylist Harman Kaur and be the most fashionable bride of the year.

Expert Tip: Each Bride has her own style, and preparing for the big day can be a tricky job. BUT it is really important to identify your style as this will really help you with the overall planning process. From invitations to flowers, to finding the perfect outfit and jewellery, it’s such a fun yet overwhelming process. The check list to follow per se: They say experience carries perspective when it comes to a wedding. I go by it and below are 10 thumb rules I would follow/recommend to all to be brides. Let Close people assist you: Siblings. Moms, Aunties and close friends, they are people who understand you more than anyone else would, they might not take control of things but will enjoy the process alongside and have some best suggestions to make. Don’t fret over fine details: Its fine it you did not get that Sabyasachi or the wedding dress did not fit you to perfection. It’s your day; don’t let a stitch here or there bother you. Sweat to Stress less: Hit the gym a few months before the D-Day. Assign a fireman: Share the load, avoid stress. Be True to you: Be YOURSELF, do your makeup your way, wear a dress you are comfortable in, and practice dancing in your wedding shoes. Get another pair if they don’t feel right. Nothing is more beautiful than a bride who is having a good time. Know when to Save: To avoid money woes, make a list of things you are willing to bargain on and what you want to splurge on before you start planning. Try It On Before Go Time: This might seem like open secret to some, but for panicked planners, it can be an important reminder. Exercise Cravings Away: Keep the sugar/cheese/alcohol/anything fattening cravings away at least a month before the wedding Think About Yourself: DO NOT STRESS!! Your guests will be FINE. My advice to any bride-tobe is to trust that the important people in your life want the best for you. Knowing that will soothe you of everything. Always Remember: The Three Words and the Proposal, We want THAT GLOW brimming through the face. How can they be more fun and experimental without over doing it? Experiment all you want but don’t let it show, going a little over board is cool too, it’s your biggest day after all, just make sure you are owning the look. FUN FOLLOWS.

Tip:

Mogra is true love! Not only does it look good and add a certain amount of tradition to the wedding decor, but it smells absolutely divine! We love spotting Mogra in wedding decor, and really like how versatile the little white flowers are- from jewellery to hair and even decor, it can be used anywhere! Decor keeps getting reinvented all the time but you could add mogra to roses and give it a more contemporary touch. Courtesy: wedmegood.com

Food Trends one can follow in 2017

A personalised menu for a wedding is such a cool idea! Name dishes according to family members or have your fave family recipes on display!

Fusion food is a trend that’s become quite a fad off late, especially when it comes to mixing traditional Indian dishes and westernizing them so that they look amazing and taste great!

The newest trend and perhaps most interesting trend when it comes to food and cocktails is to combine science and food together! A la Molecular Mixology.

Why should only kids have all of the fun? An adult DIY food station which lets them pimp their food is also such a cool idea! Have a DIY sundae, yogurt, cupcake, coffee, ice cream or chat counter!

Mini Everything - How adorable is this trend? Everything, we mean everything is cuter in a miniature form. So serve up pint sized food for appetizers, main course and dessert! Tiny little cupcakes, doughnuts or burgersso so cool!

Gotta have Gota

SPECIAL

Gota in wedding décor: Yes, got is not just limited to wedding outfits now or accessories. It is now in fact being used in wedding decor as well and looks like a dream “Gota jewellery is artistic and innovative. It has become a craze for offbeat mehendi jewellery, combined with pearls, mirror work, ghunguroos, colourful pompoms, etc. which make the jewellery full of fun to be adorned. Whether it’s the bride or bridesmaid, Gota jewellery can be worn by anyone.”

MINAL JEWELS is an eclectic blend of Indian culture & western radicalism. In my venture, I combine modernist designs & Indian sensitivity with varied techniques to create jewellery that exemplify the beauty, strength & love of a woman. My collection depicts a great combination of aesthetics & functionality. “Creativity and art have always been an intricate part of my life. Having been born and brought up in Rajasthan, I have had a deep connection with different forms of culture and values. Since I was a kid, I have been excellent with my sketching and drawing skills and have won various awards and recognition for the same. So I decided to consider Jewellery designing, given my interest and skills. I came to Mumbai to pursue my aspirations and graduated with a super specialisation degree in Jewellery Designing & Manufacturing from The Jasani Dept. of Jewellery, SNDT, in 2014. As a part of the course, I also did internships at various diamond firms and realised that I could only get the best out of myself if I started designing and manufacturing jewellery for myself instead of others. I had the confidence in myself and my skills and I began making designing and manufacturing jewellery on my own. There was also an increasing demand of fashion jewellery products in the market and therefore, with the support of my parents, Minal Jewels was up and running! When it comes to buying jewellery, there are so many types of stones, finishes, styles and materials to choose from, it can be hard to know where to start. I believe beauty is present in every piece of jewellery, but poetry is in the details. The notion of ‘aesthetic design’ is in the heart of every piece in Minal Jewels.

The core principle of the brand is to maintain fresh designs and finishing in each creation. We use the combination of pristine craftsmanship & modern techniques to create intricate handcrafted collection which can be found nowhere in India. Since the inception of Minal Jewels in 2015, the response has been overwhelming. We started with conducting exhibition in various cities across the country, including Mumbai, Jaipur, Udaipur, Ahmedabad, Surat, Indore, Bhilwara, etc. Seeing the success of our jewellery in the exhibitions, various fashion boutiques from across India showed interest in retailing our products. Soon after, I even started promoting our label on social media platform and immediately started to get online orders for our jewels. However, the successful launch of the label, the beauty of the ornaments and the timely execution of orders to meet the demands is not an individual effort. Credit must be given to the amazing team of craftsmen and karigars we have. The secret behind these sparkly pieces of jewellery are their light-weight, reasonability, fashionable and more durable than the traditionally used flowers. Additionally, they can be worn numerous times to suit various occasions. No wonder it’s a trend that brides and wedding guests have adopted readily. Not only for weddings and functions, the Gota jewellery collection has designs to style the casual look as well. Shop” Instagram – Minal_jewels Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/minaljewelstore.co.in/ Email – minaljewels@yahoo.com

What makes us different from others is the way in which we use our beautiful designs, clubbed with the high quality of materials used and process each and every piece in our label. Knitting a metal wire is a very unique technique of jewellery creation, whose craftsmanship is not easily available in India. Its’ roots have originated from Italy & China. It is a very challenging process and requires high skills and extreme precision to execute.

Be the Boho bride rock it in Silver Jewellery Remember the time when Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor totally rocked shiny silver wedding jewellery for their joint-wedding in Mujhse Dosti Karoge? Deepika Padukone’s pink avatar laden with layered silver necklaces in Love Aajkal? Silver jewellery manages to resurface at weddings, no matter how much you veer towards gold. And what’s more? Wedding these days are becoming modern affairs where gold-plated silver jewellery is also an option and it’s mixed and matched with gold jewellery to add volume. The trick is to use them well - use them for layering existing jewellery, to wear them at cocktails and sangeets as a back-up option and to add semi-precious and precious stones to elevate their value. Come to think of it, a good silver set in trousseau is a welcome option.

Firoza

Firoza is the brainchild of two sisters, Tina Dugal Narang & Shilpa Dugal Tyagi who have a passion for jewellery. “At FIROZA we believe, every woman is beautiful and we aim to enhance her beauty by ornamenting her with beautiful and enchanting pieces of jewellery handcrafted by artisans across the length and breadth of the country. Each piece of jewellery at FIROZA is a fine example of craftsmanship and is picked carefully by our expert team. To do away with the barrier of geographical distance between the retail store and the prospective client, FIROZA launched itself as an online store, delivering worldwide. Our products are made out of alloys of brass and copper embellished with cubic zirconia, american diamonds, imitation kundan, polki, jadau and pearl. We also do pieces with jaali and filigree works. We offer a wide range of antique and primeval temple jewellery. At FIROZA we believe that repetition of a design makes it monotonous and regular, therefore, to maintain exclusivity we limit sale of each design to only five pieces. To ensure you have a variety to choose from, we showcase new designs each day. Be it the Resham bangles, terracotta jewellery from the Rangoli Collection, sassy and chic modern designs from Uber Collection, flawless pearls and kundan of Pakeezah collection to queenly Swarna Collection, each piece is unique in its own way. When we say each piece is a designer piece, the first thing that comes to the mind of customer is PRICE. We expect designer jewellery to be different and often unaffordable. However, FIROZA breaks that myth. All our pieces are reasonably priced to make it easily affordable. Our products start from as low as 500 INR. From sophisticated board room jewellery to intricate bridal sets, Firoza is your one stop shop for all jewellery needs. #Trending: Printed Dance F loors Are Perfect For A Budget Mehendi! There’s something new and exciting that we are spotting these days, and it lends such a happy and cool vibe! Yep, printed dance floors look so cool, and we love them! Printed dance floors for your wedding functions is a cool new idea, and it just escalates the decor to an all-new level! No more lit up blocks stuck together with masking tape, if you know what we mean! This works better for a day function, but at night you can really light it up for some added effect! What else can you do to enhance your printed floor? Opt for subtle, offbeat prints so they don’t clash with your lehenga or decor. Botanicals and modern contemporary prints are totally in trend. Let them add to the entire colour scheme of the wedding / Mehendi / Sangeet Personalise it: Add monograms and #hashtags Make sure they are interchangeable as a dance floor for different functions! You can ask for stickers instead of painting the floor, it’s even more economical. 46 AUGUST, 2017 - TULIP

Neiv Clothing “NEIV which means a foundation or a base, is the beginning to something new. It is a brand built on the passion to create clothes which are boundless. The desire to stand out amidst the crowd and create a mark is our sole motive. As a consumer when I ventured into the market to understand the kind of products which were being offered, I sensed a gap. Either they were heavily adorned well suited for special occasions which could be worn probably just once and other semi formal or casual with regular styles. I was always left disappointed in terms of something which was simple yet classy which could be worn at different occasions. This propelled me to use my experience and skills to come up with a collection which could fill this gap and provide them with comfortable casual yet eclectic mix of clothes which could be mixed and matched for different occasions. Thus I worked upon this space and created my indo western collection especially drapes which lent to the feminity of a woman. I was not only mixing the western and Indian silhouettes instead creating an absolute new look which wasn’t definite to a particular occasion. Like the red sari drape that you see in the picture is a completely new creation by me! You cannot find a copy of it until now! The idea behind it was to restore the beauty of our tradition Indian sari, and make it look stylish at the same time. Another challenge was the prevailing and “so done “idea of a draped sari and every possible kind of its flooded in the market. But, I knew there was more to it and I wanted to give it my own dimension. So I created this sari drape with a high neck to create a balance of feminity through the folds and fall of the fabric and the bold character through solid colours and high neck detailing and the long slit! The other half of me is devoted to create new embroidery from the ones already available in the market and I translated my love for floral again in a different yet stylish look. I gave it the look of a hand sketched floral and tacked them in a way that they looked like 3D bunches of flowers on a garment. As much as I enjoy playing around with the silhouette to create a new look, I keep experimenting on embroideries as well. I’m always divided into two halves trying to get the best of both! I want my consumers to think of my clothing in their wardrobe as their “go to” for any special occasion and a wish to stand out even in a small gathering!”, says founder Stuti Kejriwal Available at store Anonym, Banjara hills and Talasha, Hyderabad. Also check more of her collection at petals exhibition in September For more: Instagram-Neiv.clothing Varsha Wadhwa “It’s something I always wanted to do, since making “couture” for my barbies with whatever I got my hands on. I launched my line Varsha Wadhwa, Demi-couture luxury women’s wear in June 2016, as I felt ready to combine my knowledge from my experiences at the European fashion schools I attended (London College of Fashion and Istituto Marangoni, Milan) to create fresh styles which are easy to wear but look grand at the same time. I absolutely love pearls, pastels and delicate embroidery. I like to put in a lot of thought in the process of making each outfit. There is a story behind it, which you can see in the detailing. With my knowledge of the western cuts, which I admire of Italian tailoring the most, combined with Indian embroidery and 3D surface treatments, with each collection I offer a distinctive look to the Modern Indian woman, who is so much more global. Most common reactions I get from my customers are -Oh this is so different from the regular stuff we see all around! And once they’ve bought one outfit, they always come back for more and that is the biggest assurance and compliment to me. Modern wedding and wedding style for the season- With such hectic schedules, be it a city wedding or a destination wedding, most people want fuss-free but ornate styles which are traditional but edgy as well. This wedding season, Millennial pinks, old world charm mixed with modern minimalism would feature in the choice of silhouettes, exquisite detailing in embroidery - using pearls, dabka, crystals, bugle beads, tassels of any composition. In my collections, you’ll find a lot of bridesmaidfriendly pieces too - gown saris, capes with pre-draped saris, as well as the musthave classic evening gowns with embellished 3D flowers and crystals.”, says founder Varsha Wadhwa. Pasha India Pasha India is a quirky destination for fashion. The core idea of our brand is to produce casual, semi-formal western wear with an ethnic twist, for example, our latest collection is inspired by the gorgeous drapes of a dhoti. Our signature product is the dhoti jumpsuit, as it is a combination of a jumpsuit as well as a dhoti. This idea of mixing the two was our founder, Dia Ajmera’s idea. She is a huge fan of contemporary Indian wear, and enjoys the lovely drapes and how the fabric falls. One day, she decided to pick out elements of contemporary designs and dhotis to see how she can use it in a different way which has never been done before. After a lot of mind maps, sketches, draping and experiments, she came up with our 3 most selling products, dhoti jumpsuits, dhoti pants and dhoti gowns.

“We at Pasha India, offer a great variety of products. We specialise in digital prints, such as floral, abstracts and conversational. With pocket friendly prices, Pasha India strides into all seasons with refreshing colours and playful prints. We make comfortable, everyday wear. Our colour palette depends on current trends, although pastels are our favourites. As mentioned earlier, dhoti jumpsuits, dhoti pants and dhoti gowns are our most selling products. Apart from this, we make a lot of layered dresses with ruffles and frills. We keep developing our collection on daily basis. We also try our best to make free size garments, by using a lot of draw strings or elastic for easy and comfort fit. We also customise garments for better fit, leaving sufficient margins for future alterations. Our inspiration comes from our surroundings as well as the current trends. We have an entire team who does research on fashion trends, latest fabric in the markets, colour palettes etc. as we aim to keep our customers updated with the hottest trends, and styles. We try to combine our favourite trends to fit the brand’s signature style. Our latest inspirations are dhotis, pastel palettes and floral. “says Founder Dia Ajmera Shop: www.pashaindia.com

Blanche Jaipur “To be very honest and frank, it was just a happy accident. I grew up in a family where fashion is the priority and I knew I would inherit something for sure. My dad is a garment exporter and my mom is a fashion designer so I keep getting help from here and there. Also, I have been attending fashion weeks since the age of 7 and always loved the whole idea of it. This started when I had put up a stall in an exhibition in Jaipur which had kid’s wear garments, cushion covers and stationery. I started with kid’s wear because not many stores and designers are dealing in it. That’s when my friend’s sister Anu asked me if I could customise the same print night suit with their names for herself and her 2 year old baby girl. I thought to myself - “why not?” I uploaded a picture saying - open for customisation. Since then I have been getting orders and I guess I just got lucky! The response so far is overwhelming and now we have started delivering it all over the world. We are pocket friendly and have got the range for every category! Be it the lacy gowns for brides or quirky prints for girls or super comfortable prints for toddlers and kids. And guess what? We got sleepwear for men and maternity women too! Our USP is quirky and floral prints, along with Variety of Fabrics we offer. We firmly believe that what we wear at home shouldn’t just be what relaxes us — it should also be what refuels and inspires us to be the best versions of ourselves. We are soon planning to launch a website , participate in the exhibitions and open a store! And also, start exporting soon! So that it gets bigger and bigger day by day. “ says Founder, Rashika Agarwal. See more: Instagram - @blanchejaipur , Facebook - https://www. facebook.com/blanchejaipur/ TULIP - AUGUST, 2017 49

Bridal Baraats! *Because Why Should Ladkewaale Have All the Fun? Who said Baraats are only for the Ladkewaale? Ladkiwaale are also having a lot of fun these days as bridal baraats are becoming more and more popular. What they basically are- is the bride and her entourage dancing away, even wearing safas while she enters. The lines between families are getting blurred, which is so awesome, and the girl’s side is also getting to have more fun at weddings as opposed to the old school of thought! Brides are now making a statement bridal entry, which is a lot like what the grooms have been doing for ages now! Grooms enter the venue dancing with their own party of friends and families, and now, so do brides!

SPECIAL Half Mehendi trend: This trend is a blessing for those who hate putting mehendi and the ones who cannot sit for long hours to apply crazy amounts. It is not so common for Indian brides to apply lesser mehendi especially on weddings but this trend is sure catching up.

Rustic Mandap: Move over those contemporary high-end mandap, brides and grooms these days are swearing by rustic mandap with minimal decor. Simple mandap with stringed flowers forming the backdrop actually looks majestic in pictures. So try this one for a change!

Deer motifs on grooms outfit: We are head over heels in love with this rocking trend by Anita Dongre. Deer motifs hand embroidered on grooms-wear are actually uber cool.

Subtle Jaimalas: Move over done to death red rose jaimalas, coordinate single string malas with your matching outfits and you will surely be a trendsetter. Personalized bars: Wish to make your wedding stand out? Well, have a personalised bar with a cutesy name to it. Also, name the alcohols after your family members or something personal related to you two! Fun and quirky at the same time! TULIP - AUGUST, 2017 51

SPECIAL Ritesh Kumar After working for a couple of years in Italy with both high end and street wear brands, Ritesh Kumar felt India was calling him back to start his own brand. Diverse influences and work experiences played a major role in his eclectic but minimal handwriting. “I like to work with indigenous, handloom fabrics and transform them into softly tailored separates. My muse is a woman who effortlessly goes from work to drinks and stands out for her style. It doesn’t matter if she is in New Delhi, Tokyo or Rome. The response is consistent and growing, in various parts of the world where we retail from. At the same time, it is an exciting time now in India as women are increasingly experimenting with their look and they are eagerly opening up to our easy, modular separates. We intend to grow our retail network. We are looking for new showrooms and points of sale in South East Asia, Europe and US. And adding a smart casual menswear capsule to our existing women’s line. Our inspiration is from the Influences range from cinema, free spirit of 60s and 70s, Asian philosophy, contemporary art and street culture. All sorts of visual stimuli which trigger elements of urban living in the present moment update our look and collection,” explains Ritesh. www.riteshkumar.com Facebook : @riteshkumarfashion Instagram: @riteshkumar_IN

Chambray & Co. Esha Agarwal founded label Chambray & Co. Chambray stands for a type of textile. A fine cloth of cotton, silk, or linen, commonly of plain weave with a coloured warp and white weft. “My idea of starting this label is to take high end street wear in India, mould it to make it comfortable, accessible and stylish at the same time. I see a shift in people’s sensibilities and their dressing patterns. I see the need for fabric that empowers the woman wearing it. We dress the woman keeping the needs of a man in mind. The two have never lived separate lives and this deep understanding forms the structure of every ensemble designed. I would love to see everyone dress better on a daily basis without making too much of an effort. The idea is to make fashion sustainable and bridge the gap between classes and masses. In the longer run I would want to explore a range of ‘street couture’ which would be an amalgamation of the two, using street style elements to create avant grade clothing. My inspiration for design often settles into the quietest of corners. On a sultry day, a desire took shape. I felt the need to make more than a statement,” explains Esha. Their product have handspun khadi which is given life with the sheen and structure of flax-plant linen. The ethereal result is a season-defying fabric that keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Vegetable dyes are made from roots, berries, bark, leaves and wood. The brilliant permanence of colour sourced naturally, from plants, was previously a by-product of a simple life. They use vegetable dyes to achieve neutral tones of khaki, maroon and navyblue, emphasizing the objectivity of the wearer. The hand-dyeing is done by artisans in Gujarat, prior to meeting the cut of a story, carefully told. Overlapping layers, statement sleeves, deep pocket details compliment a comfortable outer silhouette. Facebook: @chambrayc0 Instagram: @chambrayandco 52 AUGUST, 2017 - TULIP

Purple Panchi By Malvika Gupta “I have always been really fond of apparel, jewellery and what not. During my fellowship with Teach for India, my wardrobe consisted of a lot of Indian wear. So much so that I refuse to look at a sari or a kurta for a month after my following ended. That’s when I set out to design something for myself to break the monotony. I mean it doesn’t have to be this way; women should be able to express themselves without having to burn a hole in their wallet. The response has been great so far. People have really appreciated our stuff because I believe they find it refreshing. What makes us different from other stores is that we are very experimental in nature. We love playing with colours, fabrics and prints. We try to combine these elements in very unconventional ways to come up with some really quirky jugalbandi’s. Add to that a touch of our signature Golden Foil printing and it makes for an imposing silhouette.

SPECIAL

If you look at our collections right from the 1st one, we have heavily relied on natural cues i.e flora and fauna for inspiration. We believe that life ceases to be mundane when we start appreciating the elements that surround us. Our audience views our collections as refreshing because its makes them take notice of commonplace stuff such as a gulaab or a ghenda phool. We want to keep innovating and make up trends as we go along. Considering that many women still like to touch and feel the garment before purchasing it, we would like to increase our offline footprint and stock with more designer stores. We are constantly working on keeping our brand relevant to as many people as possible.” says co founder Shreevar Goel Shop: http://purplepanchi.com, Facebook: @purplepanchi, Instagram: purple_panchi

Be the ‘NakhreWaali’ Bridesmaid

Because why should brides have all the fun? “Coming up with the idea of NakhreWaali was almost a chance encounter. I was working a corporate job and use to visit fashion events every now and then and always had a quirk to style myself in a certain way which I felt was left of centre. For a fashion week I was invited to a couple of years ago, I decided to customise my earrings along with my outfit. The response I got there was amazing. Not just compliments, people were asking me where they could buy those earrings from. That’s when I felt that I could make a living out of this, made a capsule collection and put it up for sale and the rest as they say is history. The core idea behind NakhreWaali is to connect people, places, stories and dreams. All of them have a major role to play in our range of products. We started with offering only earrings but have moved on to earrings, chokers, bangles, bow ties and a couple of blouses here and there. For a wedding, what I think makes us special is we customise our products based on the need of the hour. We did a wedding where we customised everything the bride and her sister wore and even had custom gifts for the attendees of the Mehandi. For us designs come from everything around us. NakhreWaali was built by a small town Indian mentality living in a massive city. So automatically feelings and emotions became the first thing that went into our designs. Closely followed by places, our country and finally people. Each of those has their own story to tell, be it a small town be it one large democracy or a frail old man on the foothills of a hill station. They all have a story to tell and their story became our major source of inspiration for our designs. Who is Nakhrewali? NakhreWaali is an identity. A fictitious person that not only the team, the founder or the owners of the products can relate to. It’s a personality that every single person in the world can relate to. NakhreWaali was built on the basic idea that all of us have masks which we wear around people, not showing our true self. The aim of NakhreWaali was to remove those masks and tap in to the real you, the real person with their real Nakhras. Our target group over time became 18-45 year old women, people who appreciated not just the products but the craftsmanship, the handicraft, the art, the intricacy that went behind each and every product. We also hold a special place in our hearts for people who appreciate our story along with our products because what we’re really trying to sell is a dream as opposed to just accessories. We are launching our new collection in August which is names “Please Stand Up”, watch out for it on our Instagram Page and Facebook Page. You can avail special 10% off by sending us “NWTULIP10” over mail on your order! Shop: Instagram: Nakhrewaali, Mail: Nakhrewaaliofficial@gmail.com TULIP - AUGUST, 2017 53

GST

The era of

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is one of the biggest economic and taxation reforms undertaken in India. Parliament initiated a seven-hour marathon debate on four GST Bills. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has been hoping to get consensus on GST. Why was GST established? The GST was established to subsume various indirect taxes levied at different levels, with the idea of reducing red-tape, plugging leakages and paving the way for a transparent indirect tax regime.

Is GST going to benefit people below the poverty line? With respect to those living below the poverty line, there might not be a direct impact of the GST on them as such since basic necessities like food are unlikely to attract the GST but increased collections of the GST with a larger tax base should provide an impetus to the government to allocate more money for social and poverty alleviation programmes. Thus, the GST should benefit all sections of the society. Additionally, the GST, being a nationwide tax, could lead to possibly higher inflation in the first few years of its introduction but would gradually increase the overall GDP. 54 AUGUST, 2017 - TULIP

How will GST affect the common man? The impact of the GST on the prices of goods and services will largely depend on the item in question. It will also depend upon the respective state governments and their intervention with respect to controlling prices of essential commodities. Milk, for example, which is likely to see a spike in prices after GST is implemented, can still be sold at cheaper rates, if the state government offers a subsidy on it. When Goods and Services Tax is implemented, there will be 3 kinds applicable CGST: where the revenue will be collected by the central government SGST: where the revenue will be collected by the state governments for intra-state sales IGST: where the revenue will be collected by the central government for inter-state sales.

FEATURE

How will GST affect tax deductions of a salaried person? The GST is an indirect tax collected from customers who buy manufactured goods or services. So whether you are earning a salary or not, as long as you buy something, you’ll be paying tax.

Which are the items that could become costlier and which are those that could become cheaper? Broadly, services are expected to become costlier under the GST regime, as the expected GST rate would be higher than the existing service tax rate of 15%. Clearly, the GST is expected to bring down prices of indigenously manufactured goods on account of current effective indirect taxes (central excise @ 12.5%, State VAT @ 5%-15% etc.) being higher as compared to recommended lower GST rate @ 5% and standard GST rates @ 12% and 18%. Thus, price of certain category of goods may come down depending on the effective rate of indirect taxes being paid at present and the tax brackets under which goods are classified under the GST. We speak to four different people from different fields to know how GST is effecting their business and our country:

It is definitely very beneficial for our country; in every industry the tax percentage is different. For the product oriented it’s different and for the service oriented is different. The whole practice of one tax is a very good initiative. In the service industry the tax percentage varies between 15-18%. Earlier we had a 90 day credit cycle to file our taxes but now with the whole change in the tax system one needs to file the tax then and there. Of course there are lot of pros and cons in the events we manage, the client would not understand the sudden hike in the pricing or may be the competitor is charging lesser than the other, that’s when the whole thing affects us. The clients in the industry are now negotiating on the event management fee because the tax is very high to be paid. Taxes have gone down in many sectors as well. But the person purchasing the raw materials will be the most affected. On the whole GST is for the upliftment of our society. Srinivas Gunishetty, Founder at Page 3 entertainment.

GST is very beneficial for our country, a political drama which a common man is unable to understand. The government has made sure that there are informative apps but they should have spread awareness regarding it even before it was launched. It will affect the business a lot, the whole tax system has been renewed. Many people have been confused regarding the whole change but it gets easier and easier as we adapt to the change. Jessica David, Chartered Account

First of all it is very early to judge how it has been affecting our country. The whole concept is a consumer being taxed a little on the higher end for the luxuries he is opting for. Being in the food industry the business has not affected as such. The service tax is not been charged but the burden of tax has been increased in our industry, 9% and 9% that makes it 18%. The consumers have to pay more when they take a service or product which is luxurious they are taxed a little too much. When a vendor purchases raw materials, he pays the tax to the seller and that tax is being recovered by the buyer through his customers. We can’t judge the situation now, of course people are confused yet as to how this works, there are different percentages for everything, we still don’t know why the restaurants need to chare an amount of 18%, which is quite high! The Viking Star

TRAVEL

The Viking Star fleet is a class apart in terms of its design. Their World Cruise goes from London to Los Angeles and covers 27 countries over a period of 120 days and the Voyage of Marco Polo goes from Athens to Bangkok covering 10 countries in 36 days. It has been designed thoughtfully to maximise the guests’ interaction with their destinations – each ship carries a maximum of 950 guests and has direct access to most ports because of its small size, not to imply that it’s anything but luxurious. As the name suggests, Viking Star has the ambience of the traditional long ships that the Vikings used in their glory days and it even has a clinker bar to make the experience as authentic as possible. The fleet has figured in the World’s Best Awards 2016. It’s sleek and offers a minimalistic and understated elegance that places emphasis on functionality and utility, something that is also traditionally associated with Scandinavia. Each ship has 9 decks and each cabin comes with a balcony from where you can immerse yourself in the sea breeze and enjoy an unhindered view of the ocean. The amenities include the Viking living room (which is a public space), the spa, the salon, the Viking bar, the fitness centre, the yoga area, and the swimming pool that has a really cool wall that can also be used as a cinema screen. The interiors of the ship are elegant as well as luxurious and the accommodation spells classic with a capital C. The USP of this cruise, however, is the food. They are known for having the finest cuisine at sea and have rightly earned this title. They offer a plethora of choices and have multiple speciality restaurants like the steakhouse Polo Grill, the Italian restaurant Toscana, or the continental Terrace Cafe to the all- American Waves Grill that serve delectable and traditional fare from across the world. Why Justin Bieber cancelled the rest of his purpose tour?

After over 150 concerts on his worldwide ‘Purpose’ tour, Justin Bieber has had enough. We’ve got EXCLUSIVE details on why he’s cancelled his remaining 14 dates and wants to take the longest break of his career. He began his worldwide trek in March of 2016 and with the exception of a few breaks here and there, the 23-year-old has been on the road non-stop since. “He was biting off more than he could chew and was over it and decided to cancel the rest of the tour because he’s nearly exhausted”, says the source. Justin’s finally had some free time since his last shows in London on July 2 and that has to have given him a great taste of freedom from work commitments and getting to enjoy some much deserved “me” time.

Tollywood has always treated me only as a glam doll, says Taapsee Pannu

Taapsee is all set to come back to Tollywood with her next project ‘Anando Brahma’, but she seems to be rubbing Tollywood Director K Raghavendra Rao’s fans the wrong way. “In the South, they think I can only pull off glamorous roles. When they saw ‘Pink’ and ‘(Naam) Shabana’, they were like, oh, she can act.” Social media is now burning up with fans calling out Taapsee for speaking her mind and sharing her opinion. Many comments call her ‘ungrateful’ for making fun of the industry and the director that launched her. Reports state that Taapsee had to resort to blocking those calling her out on Twitter.

ENTERTAINMENT Tollywood drug scandal: Kajal Aggarwal’s manager arrested

As per the latest development in the ongoing drug case, Ronny, the manager of actor Kajal Aggarwal was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Excise department on Monday in Hyderabad. According to media reports, Ronny was in possession of a large quantity of marijuana, which has now been seized from his residence. The officials suspect he may have had links with the drug peddlers, who have been arrested in a recent drug bust in Hyderabad earlier this month. His arrest comes on the day actor Navdeep was questioned by the SIT officials. It’s unclear whether he was arrested based on the information provided by the actor. The alleged drug cartel kingpin, Calvin Mascarenhas, was reportedly known by many celebrities in Tollywood as an event manager. The details gathered from his phone records following his arrest, led the officials to the door steps of many high-profile celebrities in Telugu cinema.

ranking. So, India enjoys best FIFA what’s the stor y? India has won 13 of its last 15 matches, and is unbeaten in the last eight. Such purple patches -- despite the relatively middling opposition they mostly confront -- are rare for Indian football, says Dhruv Munjal. Over the past few weeks, Danny Batth, captain of the English side Wolverhampton Wanderers, has expressed a profound desire to play for India. In Batth’s case, whose father is Indian, the alacrity to swap his British passport for a blue jersey is easy to fathom. His chances of playing for the England senior team are dreadfully bleak, illusory at best. And if he ever needed any more incentive to represent the Indian national team, then here’s one: Only 83 places now separate his adopted homeland and the country of his father’s birth in the world rankings.

Mithali & Co in for a monetary bonanza

Despite losing the women’s World Cup final by nine runs against England at Lord’s on Sunday, the Indian board (BCCI) didn’t read too much into the defeat. Because the overall performance of the team in the World Cup was good enough to bring women’s cricket into the spotlight and could turn out to be a monetary boon for the players. Two days after announcing a cash bonanza of Rs 50 lakh each for every member of the Indian team, it is emerging that Mithali Raj and her colleagues could stand to gain a better hike in their match fees and other emoluments. In comparison, a male cricketer makes Rs 15 lakh per Test, Rs 6 lakh per ODI and Rs 3 lakh for T20. Top Grade A cricketers like Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, R Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja and M Vijay get an annual retainer amount of Rs 2 crore. All that could change as the women cricketers have won the hearts of fans and also the CoA and the BCCI officials. The board will surely look into the women’s match fees and gradation payment issues post their superlative show in the World Cup.

MOVIES Movie Reviews

Jagga Jasoos A spy-adventure from a comic book, where the main character is looking for his lost father and inadvertently stumbles upon an illegal arms trade. For a film industry that adheres to certain rules of using music, Jagga Jasoos is a sad experiment. The screenplay is structured as chapters from a comic book; the movie uses a classroom full of kids and their teacher, Shruti (Katrina) as its main storytelling device. The films unfolds as she narrates stories from the book, and we’re pulled into Jagga’s (Ranbir) world of makeshift houses, merry characters and rhyming dialogue. However, through all its excitements and exhaustions, the person who keeps it entertaining is Ranbir Kapoor. He tries to make you laugh and tugs at your heartstrings by being goofy and gloomy as suddenly as required. Katrina Kaif has little to do but makes for a good sidekick to Jagga. Saswata Chatterjee’s vulnerability and Saurabh Shukla wickedness balance each other perfectly. Dunkirk The story of the Dunkirk evacuation, which saw a flotilla of small civilian vessels assist in the rescue of stranded troops from France in 1940, has been addressed before on screen. As early as 1942, William Wyler’s Oscar-winner Mrs Miniver was painting a morale-boosting portrait of ordinary people volunteering to make the cross-channel crusade, while in 1958’s Dunkirk Leslie Norman (father of Barry) gave us John Mills and Richard Attenborough exhibiting British pluck. There a few false notes. Although structurally immaculate, Nolan’s script requires former One Direction star Harry Styles to deliver a line about someone having “an accent thicker than sauerkraut sauce”, a challenge even for an accomplished actor. But such quibbles aside, I was left marvelling that a film of such scale was ultimately defined not by its action sequences, but by quieter visions – of a man walking hopelessly into the sea (towards home?), or the expression on Branagh’s face as he stares out into the lost horizon. These are the things that stayed with me and that will stand the test of time.

Shamantakamani Writer-director Sriram Aditya surely doesn’t have a novel story line. Essentially, it is a been-theredone-that case. Bits and pieces of even the main characters have also been seen in other movies. But ‘Shamantakamani’ still makes for an engaging watch because of its tight screenplay. The imperfect characters come with their own grievances. In their disappointments, their frustrations, their semi-broken dreams, the film finds its emotional quotient. Sudheer Babu lives with the memories of his mother, who was devoured by fate when he was eight. He is sandwiched between a superstitious, self-centred father (Suman) and a stepmother who has no love for him. Will their momentary, accidental tryst with five-star life for a night result in more sorrow? That’s the ending. The proceedings are peppered throughout with comic relief. The hyperlink-style screenplay doesn’t confuse at all. Mani Sharma’s BGM does full justice to the film’s genre. The cinematography is another high point, with the frames very bright and colorful. ‘Shamantakamani’ has an ordinary story line. The screenplay and performances are what makes it an enjoyable watch. It breaks free from done-to-death scenes that Tollywood has been addicted to.

Books The Mother I Never Knew – Two Novellas (By Sudha Murthy) What secrets lurk in a family’s past—and how important are they in the here and now? Sudha Murty’s new book comprises two novellas that explore two quests by two different men—both for mothers they never knew they had. Venkatesh, a bank manager, stumbles upon his lookalike one fine day. When he probes further, he discovers his father’s hidden past, which includes an abandoned wife and child. Ventakesh is determined to make amends to his impoverished stepmother—but how can he repay his father’s debt? Mukesh, a young man, is shocked to realize after his father’s death that he was actually adopted. He sets out to find his biological mother, but the deeper he delves, the more confused he is about where his loyalties should lie: with the mother who gave birth to him, or with the mother who brought him up. The Mother I Never Knew is a poignant, dramatic book that reaches deep into the human heart to reveal what we really feel about those closest to us.

The Girls (by Emma Cline) Northern California, during the violent end of the 1960s. At the start of summer, a lonely and thoughtful teenager, Evie Boyd, sees a group of girls in the park, and is immediately caught by their freedom, their carefree dress, their dangerous aura of abandon. Soon, Evie is in thrall to Suzanne, a mesmerizing older girl, and is drawn into the circle of a soon-to-be infamous cult and the man who is its charismatic leader. Hidden in the hills, their sprawling ranch is eerie and run down, but to Evie, it is exotic, thrilling, charged—a place where she feels desperate to be accepted. As she spends more time away from her mother and the rhythms of her daily life, and as her obsession with Suzanne intensifies, Evie does not realize she is coming closer and closer to unthinkable violence, and to that moment in a girl’s life when everything can go horribly wrong.

Truly Madly Guilty (by Liane Moriarty) Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One small dog. It’s just a normal weekend. What could possibly go wrong? Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit, busy life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job, and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there’s anything they can count on, it’s each other. Clementine and Erika are each other’s oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don’t hesitate. Having Tiffany and Vid’s larger than life personalities there will be a welcome respite. Two months later, it won’t stop raining, and Clementine and Sam can’t stop asking themselves the question: What if we hadn’t gone? In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty takes on the foundations of our lives: marriage, sex, parenthood, and friendship. She shows how guilt can expose the fault lines in the most seemingly strong relationships, how what we don’t say can be more powerful than what we do, and how sometimes it is the most innocent of moments that can do the greatest harm.

The Island of Lost Girl This is the story of Meiji - the only girl who has remained untouched and unmutilated in a country that has savaged its entire female population. Having saved her from certain death in the new Dark Age that has come upon the world, her guardian, Youngest, has transported her to the only place where she can remain safe - an island where wounded girls are, sometimes literally, stitched back together and given a new life. But the Island itself is a menacing place, and Meiji may be in more danger than ever before. To see what has become of his beloved girl, Youngest must find a way to infiltrate its odd environs while keeping the constantly assaulting voice in his head at bay. His struggles against the surreal inhabitants of a world gone wrong and with his own transformed identity only serve to steel his efforts to find the girl, and escape once more... The Island of Lost Girls showcases, yet again, Manjula Padmanabhan’s genius at creating searing landscapes and alternate, sometimes brutal, worlds while reaffirming the beauty and the ugliness, the cruelty and the tremendous compassion that essentially make us human.
