A compilation of all things we are obsessing over this month
The Crown
Netflix’s most ambitious and expensive show, The Crown is one the most deliriously entertaining shows about the Queen, the longestreigning monarch in history. With 10 stunning episodes in Season one, luxurious opening titles and impossibly moving performances, it is an extravagant show, opulent, but never ostentatious. The season ending with the death of the king and Elizabeth becoming Queen decades before anyone expected, covers both her emotional heft in her youthful ascension and unexpected suspense in matters of courtly protocol and etiquette. A mere 10 episodes, left us yearning for more and finally, Netflix has officially confirmed that The Crown season two will premiere globally on Friday December 8, 2017. The first trailer for the new episodes shows the struggles in The Queen and Prince Philip’s relationship, confirming that season two will delve into rumours that Philip had affairs with women such as Pat Kirkwood and TV personality Katie Boyle – all of which were denied. This is one show that is sure to keep you at the edge of your seat!
Tongariro National Park
Situated on New Zealand’s North Island, Tonagriro National Park has 3 active volcanoes namely, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe ( Mount Doom in “The Lord of the Rings” films) and Ruapehu. The mesmerising Tongariro Alpine Crossing trail passes the magnificent Emerald Lakes and boiling mud pools, culminating at still-active Red Crater. Park wildlife includes the brown kiwi and the whio, or blue duck. To enjoy the spectacular views and have a one of a kind, wonderful experience, plan your next trip to Tongariro National Park!
Wearable Technology Gigi Hadid x Maybelline Recently, the gorgeous Gigi Hadid launched her very own limited-edition makeup collection in collaboration with Maybelline New York. The collection consists of two looks to emulate Hadid’s bi-coastal lifestyle. The first, East Coast Glam, is all sorts of New York City sexy and chic and revolves around an ultrabold winged cat eye while the rest of the look is slightly more subtle. The second look, West Coast Glow, takes things down a notch around the eyes and pumps up the volume with a bold red lip. The Jetsetter Travel Makeup Palette is a must-have. Not only is it conveniently carry-on friendly, but it comes with everything you need from four shades of eyeshadow, bronzer, highlighter, blush, concealer, and even a miniature tube of Colossal Mascara. 22 OCTOBER, 2017 - TULIP
Arguably, one of the most exciting areas of consumer technology at the moment, wearable technology has made life much easier. As technology has become smaller, smarter and integrated into everything, wearing it has become a social standard. Whether it’s smartwatches, fitness trackers or even apparel, the tech you can wear to keep tabs on your fitness levels is more popular than ever. Some of the best health and fitness gadgets you can consider adorning yourself with to help you stay fit, healthy and as techy as possible are Fitbit Alta HR, JBL UA Sport Wireless Heart Rate Headphones, Tom Tom Spark 3 and the Apple Watch (Series 2).
Does becoming “best-friends” with your husbands’ exes make you modern and broad-minded? It sure seems so to some women in the city!

Over a Cappuccino with Geethika Kanumilli
Geethika Kanumilli, started her own label at an early age and is now a well renowned designer in the city. From fashion bloggers to Tollywood’s actresses- they all are flaunting themselves in her designs. Her collection offers classy yet effortless silhouettes with fresh and fun shades and is known for its beautiful range of fresh colours and handcrafted Indian bridal wear, chic indo-western wear. “When I am about to start designing a dress for my client I start off with an intense thought that this person has to look the best in the party and stand out in the crowd. Although this sounds simple here, the intensity with which I think of this thought is abnormally high and that’s the reason why I try to come up with the most unique colour combination that’s possible,” she says. 24 DECEMBER, 2017 - TULIP
Tell us something about yourself? I did inter in (Bipc), struggled to take up fashion designing course and then I finally got into NIFT. Everything was going well and I was highly motivated. Suddenly there was a health problem because of which I had to quit my college midway. But somehow I didn’t want to let people know about my health issue as I didn’t feel like using that as an excuse. I always believe that you don’t have to explain yourself to anyone but they would know when the time is right. Tell us how you started your own label? After I quit my college in second year I took a break for few months did some
research of my own and after that I started designing two years back. I didn’t work for anybody or assist anyone previously. It was a bold move, but with the encouragement of friends and family the dream came true. My father has been very supportive from the start, and has helped me set up everything from scratch. He made sure I was viewing it as a self-sustaining business and that’s how I started my own label. How has the journey been so far? The initial days of work were very challenging. It was hard because I didn’t intern anywhere, learnt everything on my own. I was very clear from the first day itself that I was working not for money, but

for glory. So the journey so far was great for me. If in case there were no hard times for me, I would’ve still become designer but probably a normal designer. That pain raged a fire in me which helped me to create best designs. What do you do in your leisure time? In my leisure time I sketch designs and I also travel and explore places to get inspiration. I spend my time with friends. How do you manage your work and personal life? I don’t really have a separate time for work and time for myself I am pretty much at home when there is no work, I actually enjoy working a lot so I don’t really feel any burden of work or anything. What is next for you? Right now we are expanding which is a major thing for me so we are moving into bigger and better space and I am working on the interiors. We are looking at growing as a brand. I will be working some new designs like Indo-Western. Also we are expanding to other cities. So basically there is a lot going on. What is your proudest moment in your career thus far? I started my career at an early age and that’s one thing that I’m proud of. Besides, when my dad attends meetings with me, my clients recognize him and appreciate all the hard work that I’ve been putting in to my designs. That’s when I know I’ve made him proud.
Rapid Fire Three things you don’t leave home without? My phone, wallet and car keys. Who is your style icon? I love Audrey Hepburn. What inspires you the most? Everything and Anything.
You next trip will be to? To Koh Samui Island Your Strength? My family and friends. Your favourite cuisine? Depends on my mood, but I love Chinese.

Mrs India Earth-Stylish Diva
Nehha Bhandari
A trained Kathak dancer and a passionate painter, Nehha Bhandari, Mrs India Earth-Stylish Diva, lives by the motto; life is short so live it to the fullest and never hesitate to try something new! Holding a Masters in Psychology, a Diploma in French and also a Degree in Fashion, this beauty with brains believes that it’s important to not be judgemental as each individual is unique and has their own identity. A mother of two, she thinks it’s essential to stay happy and optimistic, and always aim for the stars and have faith that those stars will be yours someday! How do you manage work and personal life? Managing work and personal responsibilities definitely takes a toll on you but as they say, women are multitaskers. I am lucky really to have a great support system; my husband. He is there to take tasks into his hands whenever I need him to. How did you get into modelling? I would call it a pleasant accident. I was happy playing my role as a mother and a wife when I came across the opportunity to contest for Mrs India Earth. Being the strong headed person that I am, I didn’t want to miss this and thought of living my long lost dream again. Did you always want to do this? I used to model during my college days, but due to certain circumstances, I couldn’t continue it. So when life threw a second chance at me, I jumped and grabbed it. How was the Mrs India Earth experience? It was a great platform to showcase my talent. When you are at such a stage you are in competition with yourself. Sometimes, you surprise yourself with your own abilities which you didn’t know existed. There were ladies from everywhere; it was a beautiful learning experience. One thing which was common amongst us was our uniqueness, there were people from various backgrounds, still so many similarities; it’s uncanny!! How did winning Mrs India Earth – Stylish Diva title feel? It felt great of course. Style to me is being comfortable in your own skin, accepting your imperfections and still walking with your chin held high. And the best ornament which you can wear is a beautiful, confident smile. What inspires you the most? I find inspiration in everything. The morning sun inspires me to wake up with hope, the chuckles of my kids give me a boost of energy to keep going, and the cool breeze which blows in the face gives me much needed calmness. Above all, my family inspires me- especially my parents whose encouragement and a few words of appreciation fills me with immense pride and inspires me to do better and keep going no matter how rough the path gets. What do you do in your free time? Both dancing and painting bring joy to me. One thing which I can’t 26 DECEMBER, 2017 - TULIP
do without is playing hide and seek with my children. That’s my way of getting connected with my kids; it’s like finding peace in the middle of a chaos. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I definitely want to work in the modelling industry. After creating my own niche and establishing myself, I would like to work for the education of the underprivileged; that’s my passion. I firmly believe that education not only empowers you but gives you a much-needed identity. How do you manage to stay fit and look good always? I am an outdoor person; I love to try adventurous sports, and walking and running keep my adrenaline rushing. Contrary to popular belief, I’m not very fond of facials and cosmetics, homemade uptan and beauty treatments are what I am into. Enough sleep and drinking water is very important to keep the mind and body healthy. I don’t believe in diets; eating a balanced diet, including nuts will keep you energetic throughout and also help in keeping dark circles at bay. A vital secret I want to share; never go to bed in a bad mood, be happy so that you wake up happy! Your styling tips for this festive season? Everyone has an individualistic, distinct style, and it’s important to realise yours. Always go by the principle of being yourself and wear what you feel comfortable in. Don’t follow the fashion trends blindly. Ultimately, wear everything with confidence and you will never go wrong.

COVER STORY
Tell us how you started off your professional life? I started working as a junior sales employee for a company and later became the Vice President for the same. After that the company’s directors parted ways, one of the directors and I started our own company. After working there for more than a decade, I started Suchirindia Group Company in 2006. How has the journey been so far? Being the only son gave me a lot of freedom. Coming from a place where there aren’t many entrepreneurs, I had begun earning while still pursuing my education. I wanted to be a different person and wanted to try different things every day which is why I started my own company from scratch. I’m not a fan of the monotonous life. Have you faced any challenges? Not having a business background, I knew absolutely zilch about the business industry. I had zero support and nobody to take advice from. I’m still very optimistic about it because had it been any different, I’d not have learnt a lot of things that too in so much depth. Yes, I’ve failed but failures are temporary and I believe, they help you achieve greater things in life. What are your plans for your birthday? My birthday is celebrated as Sankalp divas; it is the day rededicated for giving back to society and supporting special children, I have started this foundation to give them good lifestyle and education. Every year I throw a theme based birthday parties to my friends! Last year, the theme was “DON” and everyone dressed up like the mafia. This year the theme is Gypsy. What is your advice for someone who is starting out their own business? My advice is to encourage entrepreneurship. Growth in entrepreneurship results in the growth of the economy. Don’t live a simple life; try to be more creative and innovative because that’s how you can make an identity for yourself and change your way of life.

CAMPUS BUZZ
Young Turks’ Forward March
The number of wide-eyed students, fresh out of schools and colleges looking to work as interns has tremendously risen in recent times. Some want to do it for the extra cash on the side and some for the exposure and experience that comes with it. They surely get to learn a few tricks and skills necessary before stepping out into the “real world”. But, what is it that these millennials are really looking for? Is it the paid internship that is more likely to get them a full-time job offer in the future? Or is there still place for the old school summer gigs? We’ve also asked some employers to share with us what skills can help the interns land the job. Let’s hear them out! 32 DECEMBER, 2017 - TULIP
CAMPUS BUZZ Internships help in gaining lots of knowledge and provide good training for future endeavours. I’d rather not want them to be stressful or cumbersome though. It would be great if they’re paid becausethat would serve as a morale booster for the intern to work harder. I’m interning as a sales manager for a medical agency. Vicky Agarwal, Student
The main thing I look for in an internship is exposure. Whatever place I may be working in should provide certificates which will be useful in the future. Paid internships are great because it would be more motivating to work. I’m currently interning as a fashion designer. Shrita Rao, Student
Working as an intern gives you the kind of exposure that you can take forward when you start a business of your own. You also learn to deal with different kinds of people. As long as I’m learning, money doesn’t make a difference. I take care of accounts for MB Motors. Zoya Mirza, Student
The first thing that I look for from a candidate is whether he/she has taken time in researching the company. Apart from that, we hire dedicated interns who will work with the core team, to understand the intricacies and processes followed by the multiple teams of Aerofit. The interns will work on streamlining the processes across different departments like Sales, Marketing, Customer Experience, etc. The interns will get the rich experience on the functioning of a large organisation and an opportunity to create an impact. Nityesh Sachdev, Managing Director, Aerofit
As what we do requires a lot of creativity, we need interns who think out of the box and come up with fresh, modern, and offbeat ideas on a regular basis. They should be quick at grasping new concepts and must pay attention to details as that is what can make or break the designs. Ethesham Razzak, Managing Director, Creative Vision

Ranveer Singh This dashing heartthrob worked in advertising as a copywriter, with agencies like O&M and J. Walter Thompson before stealing our hearts away with his charming personality and effortless performances.

Get ready for a real scare! Whether you’re a believer or not, there are few things better than a good haunting told well, and the more lurid it can possibly be, the better. From haunted fortresses, vanishing hitchhikers, vengeful ghosts and wailing spirits to grisly tales of suffering and death, its fun to hear them with friends and family, share a quilt and perhaps have a hand to squeeze. Fear is a wonderful thing, in small doses of course; and the purpose of ghost stories is meant to intensify fear and not take it away. Fear is how it also makes us feel alive. They offer us a sense of control over terror, something unattainable in real life. Perhaps this is why we hang on to them. We’ve rounded up some of the spookiest places in India where several people have claimed to have encountered the paranormal. Vijayshree Kasi, Student During holidays, when all my cousins come together, we love to talk about the supernatural and say all kinds of horror stories to see whose is the best. One such night, all of us huddled up in the living room and turned off all the lights and slid into the blankets. As the atmosphere got intense, at around 1 am, we heard a knock on the main door. Everyone was home and we didn’t know of anyone who was going to come so late at night. While we tried to figure out who it was, there was a knock again; much louder this time. Trembling with fear, one of my cousins got up to check it out and when he opened the door, there was nobody! I can never forget this night as it’s the creepiest thing to have ever happened to us!
Abdul Wasay, Student Around two years back, a husband and wife killed themselves in their flat which is on the floor above mine. The reason for the suicide is still not known and it had come as a shock to all the people in the building because they were always happy and greeted everyone cheerfully. Nobody has ever tried to sell the flat because they believe that their spirits haunt the place. People have complained of hearing knocks on the door from inside the flat while crossing it. The wife was a pianist and had a beautiful black piano in the living area. To this day, we hear it playing late at night.
Savoy Hotel, Mussoorie
The beautiful little hill-station of Mussoorie has its fair share of local legends, but the ghost of Lady Garnet Orme takes the cake. She was found dead in one of the rooms of the Savoy hotel under mysterious circumstances and is supposed to haunt it ever since. Some say that she was poisoned and strychnine was discovered in one of her medicine bottles. The incident created quite a sensation and Agatha Christie’s best-seller ‘The Mysterious Affair at Styles’ is supposedly based on this. Hotel attendants and guests often complain of a lady in white walking the hallways and strange noises and disturbances coming from the room where she was murdered.
Vas Villa- St. Marks Road, Bangalore
This place has a tragic and violent past. The place belonged to the Vas family and was occupied by Doice Vas and Vera Vas, the two daughters of the renowned lawyer, Mr Vas. In 2001, Doice was stabbed to death in her own home by an unknown assailant. She was later buried there as well and Vera moved out after some time. The place is in ruins and has been haunted ever since and the spirit of Doice is supposed to still linger in the hallways. Multiple teams scouting for paranormal activities have confirmed the presence of negative energy and disturbances.

Towers of Silence, Mumbai
It is actually a Parsi cemetery situated near the Malabar Hills. Parsis have the ritual of leaving the bodies of their dead on the rooftop of a tower to be fed by the vultures. Even the imagination of those scenes would bring shivers to your body. It is also believed that the paranormal incidents occurring in Grand Pararri Towers in Mumbai happen due to the spectral forces emanating from this cemetery.
Bombay High Court
A tortured, vengeful soul is believed to haunt every unknown entity in the corridor restricting their entry. This has been happening for the last 30 years whenever a murder trial takes place.
South Park Cemetery, Kolkata
It’s one of the oldest cemeteries and was built in the year 1767. Many people have reported that they have seen a shadow in a white dress and some even fell ill after visiting this haunted place.

Fernhill Hotel, which is now shut down after re-occurrence of haunting events, gained much name after spooky incidents during the shooting of movie Raaz. “Once Sarojji and her troupe checked in late at night and were kept awake by someone rearranging the furniture in the room above. The dancers who had an early morning shoot tried calling reception but the phone was dead. Desperate for sleep, some went down to complain, only to have the receptionist escort them outside and point upwards to show that there was no floor above”, said Bipasha Basu.
Raj Kiran hotel, Lonavala, Maharashtra
This haunted hotel in India was reported to be one of the hit zones as far as the “supernatural” is concerned. Residents of one particular room in this hotel claimed to have their bed sheets pulled over and stayed put in such state long after they’d left the bed in a scare. Some people recount having woken up in the middle of dark nights with a ray of blue light at their feet. This room is in the corner and on the backside of the reception on the ground floor itself.

D’Souza Chawl in Mahim – Mumbai
D’Souza Chawl, Mahim has acquired the status of being the most haunted place in Mumbai. It is said that a woman fell into the water and died while crying for help in the well. Probably that’s why most people say that they’ve witnessed a woman lurking around the well and the nearby area.

Oily Skin Egg Whites
High in vitamin A, egg whites can effectively dry out skin blemishes as well as tone and tighten up oily skin. Whip one egg white until stiff and spread it on your skin. Allow it to dry and then wash it off with warm water. Do this twice a week. OR Whip one egg white, add the juice from half a lemon and mix it well. Apply the mixture on your face, leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water. This will tighten the skin and soak up excess oil.
Milk
Milk is a great oil-free cleanser that can make oily skin soft and supple. Milk has alpha hydroxy acids that gently exfoliate the skin and also help maintain the skin’s natural pH balance. Mix two or three drops of sandalwood or lavender oil with two tablespoons of milk. Apply the mixture on your face using a cotton ball. Gently massage the skin for a few minutes to improve blood circulation and then go to sleep. In the morning, wash your face with cold water. Do this daily.

Baking Soda, Raw Honey, & Lavender
Since the slightly grainy consistency of raw honey is exfoliating on its own, you only need a smidge in this recipe. Use one tablespoon of raw honey, two teaspoons of baking soda and two drops of lavender. The portions of this recipe are important because the baking soda is alkaline and while the lavender is calming it shouldn’t be used in excess without carrier oils. The honey will balance the other ingredients while aiding in lifting dark spots. Mix your ingredients well and apply on makeup-free, damp skin, gently massaging into your pores.
Brown Sugar & Coconut Milk
Take two teaspoons of coconut milk and slightly more brown sugar to make a paste before smearing on your skin. Sugar is a stimulant which can help bring down puffiness and coconut milk is naturally antiseptic and soothing.
Blemishes
Aloe Vera
Raw honey
The humectant and emollient properties of honey nourish the skin cells and keep the skin in optimum health. Its antioxidants remove free radicals and fade away scars as new cells replace the damaged ones. Apply a layer of honey on the blemishes and keep it on for about 15 minutes. Wash it off with normal water. Apply honey every day to get rid of blemishes quickly.
Aloe vera possesses healing and skin rejuvenating properties. It has antioxidants and polysaccharides that are responsible for these effects on the skin. Cut open an aloe vera leaf and extract the fresh gel that is present inside. Apply this on the affected area and massage it in for a minute or two. Leave it on for 1015 minutes. Rinse it off with water. If it does not feel too sticky, you can also leave it on overnight. Apply aloe gel twice a day.

KITCHEN THE HEART OF HOME
- By Simran Harjani
It was all sayings of the past that “interior designing “was just conceited expression of decoration for rich taste and sensitivity in decorating space. But now we live in an era where people realize the true importance of having their space taken care of by specialists, with comfort and pleasure for all. Interior designing is an art of molding the experience of interior space, by manipulation of spatial volume as well as surface treatment, a process which helps its customers with a set of exquisite and pleasing and well planned solutions for better use of the space in question. Their primary goal is to make better use of the space available in the intervened environment. Kitchen is still the most important place of your house, where most of the fuss happens, while the living and dining room are for other occasions. kitchen is where the heart is (where the food is). Everything starts in the kitchenit is where you take your first sip of tea and read your newspaper, where the first aroma of coffee comes from, where motherly love blends in with the dishes perfectly. Kitchen is the heart of our home, and it has to be properly furnished in order to allow the rest of the places to function in order. You think you know your kitchen style? Have a look at these guides to select your favorite kitchen design theme, and then tell us which one takes the cake.
MODERN KITCHEN
The definition of modern may vary from a person to person but when we think of modern, we get pictures of frameless cabinets, open cooking area, strong horizontal lines, and a kind of cleanroom starkness or sterility. Well, think again! Today’s modern kitchens are characterized by some distinct stylistic features and some very helpful and functional design elements. The specific looks can vary depending upon the overall appearance of the home. Many of them focus on sleek and simple hardware, sleek granite counter tops and cool tones over rustic furniture. The main reason behind modern kitchens being famous today is because of its overall look, feel and the aura of sophistication. Why should you consider modern kitchenMany people get confused between modern and contemporary and may at times use it interchangeably, but there is a difference between look and terminology. MODERN- refers to a specific design style from early mid 20’s, something that is totally opposite of traditional, which varies depending upon the period. The main reason why people prefer modern kitchen style over any other is because of the total outcome it gives from flat panel door style to sleek and simple hardware to emphasis of horizontal lines to adding industrial elements a lack of ornamentation, with the natural beauty of the materials shining through. Everything about modern kitchen is simple yet overwhelming.

TRADITIONAL KITCHEN
Traditional kitchens are recognized by their details and not just simple but creating an eye-catching detail, which is definitely not a cake walk. Traditional is a theme which never goes out of style, the one which is home and warm with a pleasant touch of coziness. Traditional kitchen is the one which uses a lot of real wooden finishes with pale colour which run through the space easily. Traditional kitchens which are defined by their details include arches, decorative moldings and corbels, raised-panel cabinets, a mix of antique finishes and furniture-like turned legs-even a chandelier. Why should you consider traditional kitchenThe trend of modern kitchen has begun in last few decades but nevertheless traditional kitchen style will always stay popular. Shaker cabinets, wooden or stone worktops and rustic touches, such as a flagstone floor, are comforting and timeless. TRADITIONAL- refers to the old school era- the one that many of us are still fond of. There is a bit of embellishment everywhere you look but the best traditional kitchens are those which just feel layered rather than overbearing. The best part about traditional kitchens is that you have a lot of flexibility to play around with different styles and finishes and to add on you have a number of decorative items to choose from.
TRANSITIONAL KITCHEN
Confused between modern and traditional style of kitchen? When modern looks too sleek and traditional is too stodgy? Your borderline style is definitely transitional. It is like a moderator between the two with the warmth and welcome of traditional design and simple yet clean lines of modern transitional. They blend a functional kitchen space using a sit-down dining area, a comfortable living room or an outdoor space. By choosing an L-shaped, U-shaped, onewall or open kitchen design, the flow between eating and kicking back is smooth in this kitchen layout, therefore they allow ease of moment between formal dining kitchen and other spaces of the house. Why should you consider transitional kitchenExtensive in nature, transitional kitchen mixes natural and man-made materials as well as finishes and textures are perhaps the cornerstone of the style. A transitional kitchen will often feature wood, steel, marble all in small places. You can see wooden cabinets, concrete flooring and stainless steel all working together to create a harmonious whole. It mostly uses neutral colours in varying shades, a little pop of colours here and there are surely welcomed. The end results are in typically sophisticated and timeless look.

CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN
Contemporary kitchens are playful in terms of forms and finishes, including and blending other styles yet creating its own reflection. Contemporary kitchen design isn’t a strict philosophy for kitchen decorating. There is no hard and fast set of rules to follow that will allow you to call your kitchen authentically “contemporary”, however. The touchstone for the contemporary kitchen is handling the chaotic stress of modern life. There are three types of contemporary kitchen such as- urban contemporary, casual contemporary and European contemporary. Whatever you chose at the end the final projects of contemporary kitchens are worth the wait. Why should you consider contemporary kitchen“Contemporary” is one of the most widely used terms in home improvement. It can mean the latest trend or it can represent the decorating themes of the early 1950s when the term was first used. The best part of contemporary kitchen is that it is not overly decorative. The choices of the colours can vary but the colour palette tends to be “slightly more monochromatic.” The secret of warm contemporary kitchen is in building a foundation of shape, the one that personifies contemporary style, by adding features- in the form of colours or material- that brings warmth to the kitchen.
The one place that tops your priority list in terms of hygiene and well décor is surely ones kitchen. Your kitchen is your heart of home, and it has to be properly executed in order to allow the rest of place to function in order. You surely will have a checklist before planning everything and where design stands in way what matters the most is function. What does it take to recognize food furniture? Right décor? There is surely no single answer to that but we warmly recommend all the significant factors below to make the most of all the possible situations. Use open shelving We know how messy the kitchen gets while cooking finer looking good food, and you surely want to hide the ugly kitchen appliances. Here is a tip for making sure you hide them and keep your kitchen pretty. Choose specific places that don’t get that messy and make your kitchen more users friendly and personal by exposing some of your cupboard spaces to light. Choosing kitchen cabinets When it comes to making nerve wracking decisions regarding kitchen such as flooring, cabinets, colour shades and other things, cabinets have an undisputed leadership position. It is challenging, exhausting yet the most important decision out of all. Trends change day by day, people invent things every minute. Thus deciding what you really like is surely a task, and it may so happen thatyou will find an amazingly practical and new material right after you purchased your cabinets. The right cabinet with right colour will surely give you the best result. Incorporate natural elements Using wood accessories not only gives you the vintage aura but also adds the old school vibe to your modern kitchen. This works well with the kitchen accessories as well like trays, dish racks, taps, and furniture used and many other things as well. The only thing one needs to be careful about is that the material used should be food-safe and waterproof, as it is likely to be used around food. Stone accessories and ceramic accessories are also a great way to incorporate a vintage look into your kitchen. TULIP - DECEMBER, 2017 47

INTERIOR MODULAR KITCHEN Measuring the kitchen correctly is a pre-requisite, without which everything else fails. In management the first step- planning- and the last step- controlling- are most important which enable the work to be done in order. Same in the department of modular kitchens. Planning and designing the layout is the most important. In recent years, we have observed that many companies which are well known have been reported to have lost goodwill due to missmanagement in measuring the kitchens properly. Everything from ordering, material planning and kitchen installation depends on correct measurement. Although there are different types of kitchens, modulars are trending right now. Importance of Modular Kitchen:Easy to assemble: One of the best features of a modular kitchen is that it can be easily assembled. Modular kitchens offer you the flexibility to practically relocate the entire kitchen when you move house. Additionally, you can get a part of the kitchen altered or repaired at any point of time, without having to worry about it affecting other parts. Customization: Depending on your taste, available space and personal preferences, you can get your kitchen customized. You can color coordinate your kitchen or go for a design that contrasts with the theme of your house. You work within the limits of your budget. Space Savers: The shelves within a modular kitchen enable you to save a lot of space. In some kitchens, you will notice shelves in small corners or tiny spaces, while some they are designed to hang on doors. This type of kitchen also allows you to fit appliances along the
A well designed kitchen should be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. Decisions about the kitchen depend upon your current and future needs as well as your lifestyle, interests and the structural limitations of the house. The materials and furnishings used affect the appearance, character & functionality of your kitchen. The following points should be kept in mind when designing or renovating your kitchen. First identify your requirements i.e. do you need an open kitchen, what size fridge would be installed (double door, etc.), appliances like dishwasher and so on. Always develop the plan including the work and storage areas, wiring, lighting and ventilation. A kitchen is more than just cabinets and counters. It is an amalgam of tradition and modernity which is expressed through design beliefs and principles. Despite the presence of a variety of options available in the market there is always a requirement of organic yet functional space by using eco-friendly products. Go Green is the new mantra and is achieved by using natural materials and earthy textures. Green kitchen design has come a long way in a short time. Some people believe that sustainable kitchen renovation with a small budget is impossible but it is actually not. Simple & sustainable
wall or shelves. Such features are a boon for small apartments. Convenience: Traditionally, homeowners hired carpenters to design their kitchens at home itself. This approach is not just time consuming, but it also causes a great deal of inconvenience to the household. Modular kitchens, on the other hand, are made in factories and are then fitted in your house. Beautiful appearance: Modular kitchens come in a range of contemporary and chic designs. You will find a number of patterns with attractive aesthetics and the best functionality. Efficient storage: The shelves, cabinets and drawers of a modular kitchen offer efficient storage. The storage capabilities will help you organize kitchenware items, making cooking and working in the kitchen easy and efficient. It also helps to de-clutter the kitchen giving it a neat and clean appearance. Smart design: Modular kitchens are smartly designed, catering to Indian habits. That ensures you store items that are used most frequently in convenient locations. The kitchen will also be separated into areas for cleaning and cooking. What’s so remarkable about these features is that the division won’t be easy to discern, but will assist you functionally. A R Neelam, Architect At Neelam Architect & Interior Designer, Hyderabad
design can save your money in the short and long term. For example, you can reuse cabinet bodies by only replacing doors you can achieve a new look without generating a lot of waste or spending a lot of money. Prioritize your wish list and buy the best appliances your budget allows. Search the internet for season’s sale specials and choose quality over quantity. Every action, be it opening of a cabinet door or drawer should be a pleasure it should allow you to cook with comfort and style. Use of dark colours in cabinetry can make the kitchen feel dark and cramped. If you have a small kitchen – or do not get a lot of sunlight – you should use light colours and exposed shelving to make it feel more open. Whatever design you choose for your kitchen it should complement your personality and allow you to work in comfort. Misha Khan Profession- Interior Designer, Hyderabad

We’re talking bright colours, loads of fluff and snugly fabrics that will keep you toasty warm all winter long! You can wear anything and still look dapper if your proportions are right. FASHION When winter comes and multiple layers become mandatory, we run out of cute outfits. But layering doesn’t mean we give up on style! We just need to get creative when it comes to what we wear. A fancy turtleneck top worn under a smart sweater cuts it perfectly. An elegant jacket or coat on top will just add to the grace. Also, coats can be given a completely new look, by adding a belt to them. As boots always steal the show, you can pair them with chic leggings. A striking scarf can make even a plain outfit look polished. As they come in different styles and prints and can be worn in many ways, experiment with them this winter! Sanya Khan, Student
I love summer and summer style but winter is when the magic happens. You get to layer, you get to pair and you get to break out the badass jackets and the cold weather essentials. This year I’m super excited about the suede chukkas. Extremely versatile and can be paired with anything. Now, they are hard to take care of but, they look and scream fantastic. It’s all about denim, more specifically the dark wash non-distressed jeans. You can still wear your lighter wash jeans but they seem to go better during summer and fall. Sweaters, especially the lightweight crew neck are perfection and come in all different colours and varieties. They are very versatile as they can be paired with anything - chinos, jeans or slacks to the office, you name it. Also, this season, turtleneck, lightweight v-neck and quarter zip sweater are in trend. Now, scarves are not only functional but they are fashionable. Just by adding a scarf you can totally change the look of an outfit. Puffer jackets or Woollen Jackets should be your go-to option this season. Jackets have always been a style statement, this year you should definitely opt for a puffer jacket, which will definitely give your outfit a stylish edge over others. Aayush Khanna, Student
Winter is considered a harsh three month season, but when it comes to fashion, youth love it because we love what we wear and can try out a number of different styles and trends. From spring to summer and monsoon to winter, it’s a complete metanoia. In winter, we get a golden chance to play with our entire wardrobe. You can utilise the whole year’s shopping hard work now. Beanies, scarves, sweatshirts and hoodies are some of the must-haves as they never go out of style. People have been looking at fashion as an important aspect now, as compared to 5 years ago. I’d say during winter always carry a scarf with you when wearing a sweatshirt because it’s “Legendary Winter Gear,” and you’ll always look on point. Cést la vie Shresth Goel, Model
Winter is without a doubt a tricky season and for many reasons. It gets dark early, it gets cold, and oftentimes it can feel rather depressing. While there really isn’t a cure there are a few things we can do to trick the mind and body, starting and ending with one word, cashmere. The luxurious fabric just might be one of the warmest, too. The material is shorn from the superfine undercoat of goats, which is what makes cashmere so soft to the touch. Before you settle into your winter slump, perhaps indulging in a few pieces of cashmere to pick yourself back up is the very answer you’ve been looking for. Think beyond the pullover sweater! You’re probably picturing your well-dressed mother in a classic ivory cashmere crewneck, maybe with a white button-down underneath, the collar and cuffs peeking out just so. We are too. Thankfully, these days cashmere comes in a whole range of chic and practical iterations. A T-shirt? Yes! Socks? Absolutely. Tight? Mm-hmm. Aarohi Muvva, Student

SPECIAL Marilyn Sushmita, Student “Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” — Norman Vincent Peale The decorating of the tree from the first of December, while singing “the twelve days of Christmas” and rocking to all of the 90’s hit songs, brings my family together as we begin preparing for Yuletide! My most favourite part of Christmas involves three words: Faith, Hope and Love. Faith, that there is a higher power who watches over us each and every day. The Hope of a better today and the tomorrows still to come. The Love of family and good friends preparing a meal and breaking bread as one. Our ability to love one another, to renew our faith and bring hope into our lives and the lives of others, is the greatest of gifts to bestow and receive on Christmas. Christmas is all about giving, and my family has always propagated the idea to do charity and to celebrate our favourite holiday with the less fortunate. We have Christmas tree lighting ceremonies at orphanages, Christmas day lunch and carol singing at old age homes and Santa visits to the children whose laughter lights up the world, just like the joy of Christmas. Each Christmas is all about writing letters to Santa, hanging wreaths of holly everywhere, and baking cakes with mom, while the pleasant aroma of vanilla hangs in the air for days to come! Constructing handcrafted gifts for those most loved and attending church on Christmas day, are still traditions I swear by! When I think of treasured moments that cascade across my mind, I am reminded of the impressions of Christmases past. The blessings I’ve received and the Love that’s shared strikingly stand out and make me smile in reminiscence. Christmas magic is powerful, but the love in our hearts is even more magical, Merry Christmas and seasons greetings from me and mine to you and yours.
Raphael Swaran, Guitar teacher
Music has always been a big part of Christmas for me. I can’t imagine celebrating the season without listening and singing Christmas carols all the time. One of the things I always look forward to and I am this year as well, is when we all gather together and visit all our friends’ and families’ houses, and sing carols together, have a good time and share good food; which is mostly cake because what is Christmas without cake! My favourite is the delicious plum cake made with rum. I look forward to this festival all year and start getting the “Christmas feels” right from November, but aside from the singing, food and merrymaking, I guess what really makes this festival so important is what I suppose makes every festival an important time of the year. It’s a time of the year when you get to unwind and spend a lot of quality time with your family and friends, and this has so much more value now is this age of constant hustle.
Shashank Lahoti, Advisory Associate Last week of December is what I look forward to the most every year! This is virtually the only week in the entire year when the whole planet sets its differences aside and aligns with a singular common goal – Party! And it all starts with Christmas elevating the tone for this euphoric week! This Christmas we decided to play the Secret Santa game within our small, 7 people since second-grade school-friend circle – I’ve already decided what I am getting for my gifts and the expectations are enormous from my designated Santa! We (the same bunch) are then set off to the mountains of upper Himachal for the rest of the week until the 1st day of 2018 – hopes are high for some fresh snow! Happy holidays!
Zara Paul, Student Christmas the very word itself brings a wide smile on my face! I wait eagerly for the month of December because as a child and even now that I’ve grown up Christmas is my most favourite festival as the entire family gathers to celebrate this auspicious festival forgetting all our grievances and focusing only on peace and goodwill. Christmas means delicious food, dressing up, gifts, meeting people, and just having a lot of fun. It’s the only time we are not conscious about putting on those extra kilos! Every year we start our preparations a month before. We clean our entire house; decorate it with beautiful lights and the Christmas tree. We prepare homemade eats and sweets that we distribute to our friends and family. I love going for the Midnight mass on Christmas Eve as I get to meet everybody, sing carols and have my first Christmas cake!! The entire month is very exciting and since I’m the youngest I receive a lot of presents which is always a plus point. TULIP - DECEMBER, 2017 57

My new year’s celebration in general is very subtle, calm and composed. I would love to be surrounded by my friends and family. I don’t really like take resolutions because I believe we should do things whenever we feel like and nothing should stop us form doing it. As long as we know what to do, happy and healthy, resolutions do not matter. This is my idea of celebrating New Year. Teju, Student
New year is the most awaited time of the year as I go out with my close friends to a party have good time partying and then we go out for a long drive sit by the hill, do the countdown and watch the fireworks in the sky. This year I am not keeping any resolutions as I never stick to them. I have decided that I am, at the end of this year, instead of making resolutions; I am going to be thankful for certain things I have done and accomplished this past year. Vikas, Working at Triumph
My last year’s resolution was to find who my role model is but I couldn’t actually find one. That’s because there’s good and bad in everybody and nobody has the same story. I believe everyone we know has something good about them to become a role model for someone else. So my resolution this year is to look at the positive side of a person and learn from it as there is always something good to learn from every individual. Sanjana, Student
As such there’s no resolution cause things never materialize whenever planned but I am looking forward to the year 2018 as good things look to be happening and I hope they keep continuing. I would love to be at a place surrounded by strangers very far from the hometown with no social network and no tensions. Pruthivi, Student

TRAVEL
If you have been good all year, it’s time to be your own Santa Claus and treat yourself with a year-end vacation. While Christmas is more wildly celebrated in the West, there are parts of India that are famed for celebrations with the ultimate style and fun.
Goa
Goa is a connotation for celebration, especially, when it comes to Christmas. With its sizeable Roman Catholic population and not to forget Portuguese legacy, Goa has the impression of celebrating Christmas with immense zeal and pomp and show. The party capital of India becomes livelier during the advent season and one can actually feel the much-spoken warmth of Christmas. The entire city is decorated with flowers and lights. In the midnight, masses sing carols and this goes on till the early hours of the morning. Even the beach shacks and restaurants serve Christmas lunches and dinners and have live bands playing. There all night long parties organized on the beaches like Anjuna, Mapusa and Candolim.
Manali
Are you dreaming of a white Christmas in India? If yes, Manali can be the right place for you. This popular Himachali destination is perfect for those who want to celebrate Christmas amidst real snow. Mostly it snows during Christmas time in Manali, which gives the tourist a chance to enjoy skiing and making a snowman or simply throwing snowballs at each other. One may also like to live in one of the log huts that definitely enhance the Christmas mood. However, make sure you book hotels in advance as many people visit Manali during December. 62 DECEMBER, 2017 - TULIP
TRAVEL
Puducherry
The French influence in Puducherry has done some good indeed! If you are seeking a zealous Christmas celebration that is peaceful at the same time, then Puducherry is the place for you. During the Christmas season, Puducherry becomes brighter and you can feel the exuberance in the air and you are compelled to be a part of it. All the churches in the city celebrate with excitement and are quite a sight to witness.
Kerala
We all know that Kerala is home to several churches and very well can guess that it can be one of the best places to celebrate Christmas. Each street is decorated and the churches remain open almost all night. The restaurants offer heavy discounts on food and drink. There is a local touch to this high spirit festival and it is something that you need to witness rather than be told about. Adding to the joy are gorgeous beaches and serene backwaters, where you surely want to spend some time.
Mumbai
Mumbai is yet another place in India, where the warmth of Christmas can be greatly felt. The bakeries are replete with the season’s best desserts and the shopping malls are decorated in a way to give festive feel. The western suburb of Bandra is the specific area where the spirit of Christmas can be felt the most, this area is mostly inhabited by Catholics and thus one can see the houses and streets decorated with lights and Christmas trees. Also, there are many churches in Mumbai where you can attend lively midnight mass. Since, Mumbai is a excellent place to party, you can expect lot of Christmas eve parties here as well.
Daman and Diu
Thanks to the Portuguese connection that this Union Territory in India has a charming way of celebrating Christmas. Situated off the coast of Gujarat, the otherwise quiet Daman and Diu becomes lively and bright during the Christmas season. Several cultural shows are organized here; one can even see Portuguese dance form like Corrindinho here. The vibrant lamps brighten the night sky making these places phenomenal during the festive season. One may also like to attend the mass in churches like Saint Paul’s Church, Se Cathedral and Church of Our Lady of Rosary.

AUTOMOBILE
The Badass suv There’s nothing quite like the feeling of driving a brand new car off a dealership lot. It’s not just that new car smell that makes it exhilarating – it’s the sensation of coming home with the latest and greatest in automotive design and technology. There are also the features to consider. New vehicles come equipped with all sorts of modern bells and whistles that you’re unlikely to find on older cars, like center console airbags, motion detecting backup cameras and more. If you’re into creature comforts, you won’t find a bigger bang for your buck than you will with a new vehicle. The blending of rugged looks with an upmarket feel is sure to strike straight at the heart of an SUV buyer. With a new and improved generation on the horizon, other compact crossovers may want to watch out for another new Jeep on the market! Since research can be tricky, we’ve rounded up the most important characteristics of the new Jeep Compass to help you decide if it’s a good buy or not! Until now, you could only have the Compass with a 2.0 diesel-manual, but now Jeep’s hot seller is set to become even more in demand with the petrol option. So is this two-wheel-drive Compass – with a 163hp, 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine and an automatic gearbox – as impressive? Or those looking at a petrol Compass, it’s only available as a front-wheel drive and in three variants. The base Sport variant comes only with a sixspeed manual transmission, whereas the other two variants – Limited and Limited (O) – are available only with an automatic. Curiously though, the range-topping Limited (O) variant of the petrol Compass comes with 17-inch alloys designated to the lower Longitude trim. That aside, there’s nothing else that differentiates the diesel from the petrol on the outside. Even inside, the biggest change is the auto gear lever and a redline at6,750 rpm on the tachometer. Also, because of the missing 4x4 terrain selector panel, there’s a small area to stow items like wallets or keys; and what’s nice is that its base is rubberised to prevent metallic objects placed there from rattling around. 64 DECEMBER, 2017 - TULIP
Though, in terms of ride, the Compass petrol auto simply crushes bad roads, just like its diesel sibling. There’s simply nothing to beat this Jeep when it comes to driving on rough surfaces. In fact, the worse a road gets, the more the Compass comes into its own. Although the suspension feels a bit stiff in the city, it remains totally planted on the highway. Even body movements over broken or wavy surfaces are well under control. Body roll from this SUV is negligible and the Compass feels confident while darting into corners or changing lanes; the steering remains precise and nicely weighted at all speeds. What’s unnerving, though, are the brakes, which under hard inputs, even at legal highway speeds, tend to unsettle the rear of the SUV. Is it a good buy? The Compass petrol automatic will appeal to buyers looking for a smooth, petrol SUV, with the convenience of an automatic, to battle congested city streets. The 1.4-litre turbo-petrol doesn’t have the same effortless performance as its diesel sibling but it’s by no means slow either. The twin-clutch seven-speed automatic gearbox could be quicker to respond and the sudden spike in power takes a bit of getting used to. Also, Jeep has made the Compass petrol automatic available only in the Limited and Limited (O) spec, priced at Rs 18.96 and 19.67 lakh respectively; that’s Rs 26,000-28,000 higher than a similarly-specified 2.0-litre diesel 4x2 manual, which will be a lot more efficient and with more power and torque to boot. So unless petrol and automatic are on your must-haves list, the diesel Compass is still the pick of the range and still the best SUV in its class. All You Need To Know About Kidneys The kidneys play a key role in body function, not only by filtering the blood and getting rid of waste products, but also by balancing the electrolyte levels in the body, controlling blood pressure and stimulating the production of red blood cells. We spoke to Dr. Shaista Hussaini, a renowned Nephrologist; she has answered some of the most common questions about kidneys. Tell us about yourself? I am a nephrologist and I have been working with the Care hospitals group from the past 17 years. My work encompasses seeing and treating people suffering with kidney aliments and as an interventional Nephrologist and renal transplant physician I am involved in taking care of the patients who need kidney transplantation. I feel humbled that almighty has chosen me to be a woman, a doctor and a super specialist like a nephrologist to serve the needy and bring in some happiness and health into people’s lives. Being a woman makes me sensitive to the ill. I feel privileged to be in this position to help the needy with my knowledge and skills. What causes kidney stones? There are many reasons as there are various varieties of stones like Calcium phosphate, Uric acid, Oxalate stones & Struvite stones. Most stones are formed due to reasons like dehydration, not consuming enough fluids, consuming excess of calcium phosphate, uric acid containing food substances. Certain hereditary factors play a role too, presence of recurrent urine infections How to prevent kidney stones? Kidney stones are hard mineral deposits that form inside your kidneys. They cause excruciating pain when they pass through your urinary tract. Making small adjustments to your current diet and nutrition plan may go a long way towards preventing kidney stones such as •
Keep yourself hydrated by drinking good amount of fluids which is the best way to prevent kidney stones. Lemonade and orange juice are also good options.
MET is offered to patients who have < 10 mm sized calculi. 15-20% patients need invasive intervention due to stone size and procedures like Stent placement, Percutaneous Nephrostomy, Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, Ureteroscopy & Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy. Kidney stones less than 2cm in size can be treated with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy; this procedure is also effective for ureteral stones i.e. stones in the urine transporting segment, the ureter, with an upper size limit of 1cm. What is Kidney Disease? What are the symptoms? Kidney disease refers to conditions and problems with the kidney and their function. Signs and symptoms of chronic kidney disease develop over time if kidney damage progresses slowly; however, common nonspecific symptoms of chronic kidney disease include: Swelling of feet, puffiness of face, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, high blood pressure & shortness of breath. But the symptoms of Kidney disease occurs very late which is in its last stage i.e. in stage 5. What are the common causes of Kidney disease? Some of the common disease of kidney disease is • Diabetes mellitus (usually called diabetes, is a disease in which your body does not make enough insulin or cannot use normal insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the amount of sugar present in your blood). •
Hypertension
•
Hereditary cystic diseases in the kidneys Interstitial diseases in the kidneys.
•
Limit the intake of food substances which can increase the uric acid levels.
•
•
Eat more calcium-rich foods.
•
Eat less sodium
Does Hypertension, diabetes or other disorders cause kidney failure? Yes nearly 85-90% of kidney failures are due to diabetes mellitus and hypertension.
I would recommend a frequent check up if your family has long history of stones present. What are the best treatments for kidney stones? Treatment of stones depends upon the size and position of the stone in the kidney collecting system. Size of the stone is an important predictor of spontaneous passage. A stone less than 4mm has 80% chance of spontaneous passage; this fails to 20% for stones more than 8mmm. Medical therapy for stone disease takes short and long term forms. Short term like measures to dissolve stones, medical expulsive therapy
Can Kidneys recover from dialysis? Kidneys which are acutely damaged recover from dialysis i.e. patients who suffer from acute kidney injury recover but not the patients who suffer from chronic kidney disease they have to continue to be on dialysis till they get themselves transplanted with a new kidney. STAYING FIT?
Fear not, we got you! After a certain age, remaining fit can become tough; it can be a constant battle between celluloid and stretch marks against a pepperoni pizza. But, at the end of the day, it is very important to remain healthy and keep your body in shape (except for cheat days, those are totally allowed). As you enter your middle age, your metabolism grows weaker, your body begins to retain more water and fatigue begins to show its first signs and colours, however, fear not because we got you covered! Staying fit now is just an investment for the future, a more independent life that is free of physical constraints. A life where you have the physical ability to easily travel, walk up stairwells, lift and hold your grandchildren, pursue passions and hobbies and shun worries of chronic illnesses that can be brought on by a stagnant sedentary lifestyle. Exercising in your middle ages is simple and stress-free, but it will take some getting used to. You have two major options: 1.
2.5 hours moderate aerobic activity per week: 21 minutes per day or 50 minutes for 3 days of the week.
2.
1.25 hours of vigorous aerobic activity per week: 10 minutes per day or 25 minutes for 3 days of the week.
Aerobics can be a very safe and ache-free way to exercise and stay in shape. Aerobics is effortless but very efficient, some aerobics exercises include: 1. Brisk walking at 2 kmph or quicker 2.
Bicycling slower than 9 kmph
3.
Tennis double
4. Dancing 5.
General gardening – weeding, digging or planting
6.
Jogging or race walking
7.
Swimming laps
8.
Jump roping
9. Hiking The muscles of your body are parts that require constant work and effort because after the age of 30 you begin to lose muscle weight and mass. 2 days of your week should be dedicated to targeting major muscle groups and components like: legs, hips, back, chest, stomach, shoulders and arms. Avoid extensive cardio without enough experience and practice, it can lead to ligament and muscle tears amongst other serious injuries. Yoga is a great, safe and very effective option to become fitter in a shorter span of time. Yoga has always been the key to unlocking hidden treasures and talents of the body, after the age of 40, yoga can become the key to unlocking a sickness and fatigue-free future. 16 minutes of Surya Namaskar every day can help trim your body, build your immunity, improve blood circulation and curb possibilities of cardiovascular diseases. Anahata Yoga is a great place to learn and practice yoga. Anahata Yoga zone will help you grow as a yoga practitioner; it will set the foundations for a more peaceful and blooming body and mind. WELLNESS
Pratibha Agarwal
Yoga Instructor, Founder and Director of Anahata Yoga zone “Middle age is the period in your life when you are no longer young but are yet to grow old and weary. To postpone that feeling of being old, here are a few easy doable yoga tips that I would like to share. They will keep you flexible and agile, two important innate qualities which we start losing as we age. Here are your tips: Stretch the spine in all directions that it is meant to move, stretch up, forward, back, sideways and even twist. This will help to keep the spine healthy and young. In Yoga it is popularly said, ‘You are as young as your spine is healthy.’ A few rounds of Surya Namaskar practised daily will keep all the systems active and working well and will also help in good blood circulation throughout the body. Make sure a few hip-opening postures like sitting on the floor cross-legged(which most of us have forgotten these days)for a few minutes daily is practised because that will keep the hip and the knee joint healthy.” Diet and food lifestyle are vital components of keeping healthy, as per the saying “You are what you eat.” The more junk and fried food you consume the harder you will have to fight for your fitness and well-being. Now I am not asking you to keep yourself on a leash all day every day. Here are a few healthy alternatives: 1. Consume a healthy and satisfying breakfast: Eggs or some Paneer, a bowl of fruit, a glass of milk, sausages or bacon, Idli or Dosa. Shun saturated food that is high in fat, like my ever-so favourite Paratha. 3 days of the week drink only Banana Milk. 2.
Opt for a high protein lunch. A bowl of sprouts, a dal, Ragi roti, Brown rice, green veggies, light salads and occasionally for something sweet choose a bowl of fruit like peaches or melon.
3.
Eat between meals, an apple or cucumber should do it. Or choose a spritz detox water, with lemon, honey and cucumber slices on the rocks (trust me it is much better than it sounds, sort of like a mocktail).
4.
Eat a light lunch, before 7 o’ clock, a spicy Thai soup or a gazpacho should do the trick. Sleep early to keep off the midnight munchies. Night, don’t let the midnight cravings bite.
Rashi Agarwal
Self employed “I think fitness does not comprise a single aspect. It’s about lifestyle changes. You need to make sure you are active mentally and physically all day. You may choose to ditch the elevator and climb few a floors. Canned juices can be replaced by fresh ones. In terms of workout, cardio-vascular exercises are most important as they keep your heart strong and burn most calories. In addition, you should add some body toning exercises and abdomen exercises. Building the core is very vital. For me, personally, I love running outdoors, in solitude, without music. It gives me a sense of peace!” Sticking to a routine exercise plan can be challenging. Fitness over 40 seems to take less priority than other things in your life, like raising teens, job hassles, older parents, etc. And, fitness over 50 can be challenging as your life starts to change substantially, such as kids leaving home, hormonal changes, job stress, etc. Overcoming most challenges in life can start by simply knowing “why” it’s important to do so. Climbing the stairs without breathing hard is a why. Being able to lift groceries today and later in life is a why. Not being frail and having more control in our lives during our golden years is a why. Reducing the risk of heart disease is a why. Getting off of the cholesterol and high blood pressure pills is a why. Make time for fitness during your middle age. Ask your friends, spouse and children to hold you accountable. Get a fitness partner. Whatever it takes, there’s no better time to start getting fit than today.
Vinod Mulanjur,
Head of compliance Fitness is a journey that cannot be accomplished unless you enjoy it every moment. As a 46 year old, I pride myself inspiring others with my commitment, resilience, and hard work, without compromising my daily lifestyle. Fitness gurus may advocate more discipline in lifestyle but commoners like me need to follow the mantra “eat more, burn more” and fitness can be a pleasure.

MOVIES Movie Reviews
Tumhari Sulu Transiting from a house wife craving to do something – resorting to collecting insignificant recognitions, seeking her identy, to finding it in her voice, and then being bruised by reality, Viday Balan is mesmerizing. Her charm and earnestness makes you fall in love with her, one laugh, snort and giggle at a time. The film traces varied complexities with beautiful maturity and ease. The relationship between Sulu and Ashok is laced and wrapped in glorious equality, primarily while Sulu stays at home. Her ambitions are often glazed over, but when she does choose to negotiate them and act, there is support from him keeping his own insecurities low. What takes the film above most of its counterparts is the notion and need of desire. What does Sulu’s voice mean to that listener? What is this late night show? What does it do? Does it reduces loneliness, does it accentuate desire? What remains private between a man and a wife? What happens to that exclusivity? The film tackles all of these, and to ensure I spoil nothing for you, I won’t tell you! Vidya Balan. This heartbreakingly good actor, who shows us time and again that she doesn’t need a man to shoulder a film. That she is talented, unstoppable, untamed means nothing but after Tumhari Sulu, it does mean that adult stories with mature outlooks will grace our screens, one more time. Catch the film. It’ll do you good! Coco Surprisingly Coco is a dark film. Its playful and transporting, an absolute riot of color and sound fueled by love and passion – love of music, love of family, love of tradition, romantic love, love of self, even the love of a good dog – but all the same, this is also a story about death , cruelty and missed opportunities. It feels, on first reflection, like departure for the delightful machine that brought you Toy Story and Monsters Inc. But here’s Pixar’s secret, Cap. They are always dark. The adorable skeletons, and there’s no better word than adorable, that populate Coco’s land of dead have a bit in common with monsters of Monsters Inc, They’re purposefully cute and yet you can see the grain of their bones and the weight of life and afterlife upon them, making them simultaneously endearing and sad and a bit creepy. What lingers is the beauty, the warmth and affection, the tounching candor with which the story approaches death and music. Coco balances these things on the head of a pin, leaving its audience with a playful story about mortality, a dark story about floppy dogs, a whimsical tale about kindly dead relatives and forbidding live ones. It’s imperfect but gorgeous even if it’s a dark movie.
Hey Pillagada Remake of the Malayalam movie Kali, the film has been dubbed in telugu due to the Sai Pallavi craze that has taken over from her last movie “Fidaa”. So much so, that the name of the movie is named after a song from the movie. The slightest of provocation is enough to set off Siddarth (Dulquer Salman), who would give a run for the moniker of ‘angry young man’ on any given day. The first half of the film takes its time setting pace and showcasing his journey from an angry child to an equally if not more, angry adult. Though he is aware of his shortcomings, there’s really not much he can do to control the situation when he loses his temper. Dulquer Salmaan and Sai Pallavi are beautiful together on-screen, playing the much-in-love married couple with an ease that’s hard to describe. The treatment of the subject and the nail-biting second half are major plus points that deserve a mention too. The movie is a one-time watch.

TAROT
March 21 - April 19 Instead of your usual in-your-face attitude, you may settle for a little subterfuge this month. Your ruling planet is in a strong place, but one signifying a more understated style and there is a definite need for discretion. So, if you have important plans to carry out, especially in close conjunction with a partner, either professionally or at play, then keeping your cards close is the way forward. People may not credit you with such an inscrutable approach, but you have the chance to show them there are subtler shades in your personal palette.
TAURUS
Forecast For
DECEMBER 2017
April 20 - May 20 People close to you hold the important cards this month, so forging friendly alliances points the way to success. This calls for all your consensus-building skills to come to the fore, not to mention some delicious match-making mischief you can throw into the mix. If you can keep your patience and see the sense of even the most peripheral people in your circle, then good times are guaranteed. The 21st promises the most outstanding opportunities, when the earthy energy offsets your outspokenness and invests you with an enviable empathy.
GEMINI
May 21 - June 20 With joyful Jupiter hitting all the right spots for you, there is a tempting table of opportunities groaning before you. Sometimes it doesn’t take actual events to make your month, but you have the right blend of optimism and willpower to express yourself, reach out and make all the difference. Believing the best is often enough to bring it about, so this is a perfect time to make your own luck. All it takes is for you to keep faith in yourself, not try and manufacture your openings, but let providence take care of the details.
CANCER
June 21 - July 22 Sometimes you just have to wait for the right moment. You are not known as an assertive sort, but even more than usual, you can make your will prevail without others realising how you do it. Certainly, you have more than your fair share of charm, or it could be just an impression you create when you have plenty of time for people around you. Up until the 26th, however, you can propel yourself into a positive position, enjoying the place where work doesn’t feel so difficult, and finally getting out of the grey area that has ground you down for so long.
VIRGO
August 23 - September 22 Your desire to show a different side of yourself through a relationship is sure of success this month. You have the right intention, energy and approach to make sure no-one doubts you are a changed person. However, if you are still holding out for cosy, conventional coupledom and can’t work out why others are not on your wavelength, it could be time to take stock. Freedom is what you are January 20 - February 18 holding out for, but it’s hard to find If a sense of aimlessness overcomes you, try to think of a more idealistic someone to depend upon. Firing up target to strive toward. The important changes happening now affect your inner rebel is the ideal response how you see the world at a deeper level and how you see the whole and others can come onside as they thing hanging together. You want to make the world a better place, but may. the way you go about this could do with some fine-tuning, for what is the point of rising to the top of the pile without a wider purpose? This is the thought preoccupying you, but the answer comes in a sublime way not arrived at by purposely pondering the problem. U

SCORPIO
September 23 October 22 Everyone occasionally goes through a purple patch when everything they touch turns to gold. It is your turn to try a taste of magic this month, as you arrive at a place that sets you apart. Your horizons are broadened, your spirits lifted and the only way to treat yourself now is to think massive and go for the best. You don’t need a social whirl, nor an exhausting love life, gold medals, or laurel wreaths to feel like royalty inside your own skin. Make a deal with yourself to rise beyond the mundane and make this a time of sweet music and momentous memories.
October 23 - November 21 Passion can get scary sometimes, even for you, but this month you positively favour a little fervour to enliven your daily round. You are not the sort to scream your intentions from the rooftops, nor give too much away if things aren’t going exactly according to plan. Better to keep people guessing and not allow them the satisfaction of seeing you strive. However, it’s hard to keep your competitive streak secret now, so set are you on scoring points from rivals around you. You are making the most of your talents to be sure, and no-one can last the pace with your intensity.
CAPRICORN
SAGITTARIUS
December 22 - January 19 Long distance runners talk about a point called ‘the wall’, which comes at the three quarters mark in a marathon. You have now reached this spot in your ambitions and if you can see your way through, your second wind is not far away, and you can finish strongly. Much of what you have been through lately is frustrating, but you will look back on your experiences as teaching you what you truly desire, and not what you thought you wanted. A sense of priority prevents you wasting energy on pointless missions and guarantees future personal bests.
LEO
July 23 - August 22 Until the middle of the month, you may struggle to find the right angle of approach in your attempt to enlist others’ support. A too intense outlook may be a symptom of your wider frustration, though try not to flag up your feelings too fervently. After the 17th, you ease into your stride and those closest to you approach with a more amiable attitude, sending your social credibility through the roof. Mars moving into alignment at the back end of the month further solidifies your standing and makes sure your year ends on the highest note. 80 DECEMBER, 2017 - TULIP
November 22 - December 21 You have the reputation of telling a thing how it is, with little regard for the wider consequences. However, this generalisation glosses over your subtler skills and the restless mental engine that growls behind your guileless exterior. You are showing exactly what a diplomat you can be this month, taking into account everyone’s interests and coming to a balanced decision. Noone thought you had what it took, but look at you now. You are proving what a polished performer you can be, posting a warning to people who presume to prejudge or pigeonhole you too soon.
PISCES
February 19 - March 20 In addition to the impulse you have to upset the applecart this month, you can add staying power and canny calculation. There is quite a lot outstanding before you reach the ideal of freedom you seek, but all the necessary steps seem to happen of their own accord without apparent effort on your part. There is no use settling for a safe half-way house – nothing less than a complete overhaul of the way you operate is likely to satisfy. Take heart, however, for you are energised, motivated, you have an end goal in sight and in short, you are looking pretty good.
