Grand finale of Hyatt Culinary Challenge 2018
To emphasize Hyatt’s focus on its rich culinary heritage, Hyatt Hotels in India hosted the fifth season of ‘Hyatt Culinary Challenge - people cooking for people’ across select locations in India where Hyatt hotels are present. The preliminary editions took place across 14 Hyatt Hotels in India in October 2018. Each of the host hotels collaborated with an NGO of their choice. Winners from each of the 13 preliminary editions came together at the Grand Finale at Park Hyatt Hyderabad to compete for the coveted prize of a holiday at Hyatt Centric Times Square New York with business class airfare. Hosted by Park Hyatt Hyderabad, all the participants enjoyed a thoughtfully curated city excursion the day before the finals. The 13 preliminary winners created culinary magic and Mary Elizabeth Van Rensburg from Delhi was named the winner. The winning recipe was “Fusion Brunch with a South African twist”. The Holiday Exhibition The Indian Impact organized a flea market called The Holiday Exhibition to raise funds for Armman Aroghya Sakhi Programme in Hyderabad. The Holiday Exhibition attracted large crowds, enabling them to spread awareness about the importance of the event. “For me, my garden is the part I cherish the most in my house. And I think more than anything, it needs to be filled with greenery. There is a nursery at Film nagar called Paudhe se Yaari. The place is as quirky as its name. You find a huge variety of saplings to keep indoors as well as outdoors. It is great as a gift too. Another place called Just Plants, located in road no.34, Jubilee hills is a wholesale plant nursery store I often visit. The Brand - ‘SK Design Studio’ is definitely raising the bars high in the market, as Shankky is not leaving any opportunity to showcase his creativity at its best. He has been designing since 2013 and is growing every single day. He believes, one should not limit himself when one is in a field where he can explore and extract much more than he thinks. Thus he has always prepared himself in a way that he is open for experiment on any new projects coming his way; ofcourse keeping in mind the pros and cons coming along with them. What is your latest/recent experiment? We were approached by a client to design a Gym & Crossfit zone (MUSCLE ARMOUR) at Shivam Road. Now this was something which we had not worked on earlier, and no wonder we were happy & also excited at the same time to take this up as a challenge. While working on this project we created many concepts and ideas as we were given a freehand by our client and we made sure the best was executed for them. It has been a smooth experience as our client was very cooperative and was open to the ideas put forward to them by us and also we got a lot to learn about the placements and utilization of the equipements used in Gyms and CrossFit Zones, which in a way has been beneficial to us, as we are now all set and prepared to take up any Gym & Crossfit Zone coming our way with much more confidence. How do you manage to work as a versitile designer ? I got into interior designing as I was really passionate about being a designer and I have been working ever since towards it. What keeps me driving is my work, as it is not a monotonous job which needs to be done in a same pattern every single day. The best part of being a designer is every single day of desiging can be even more interesting and exciting. I have no fixed pattern to follow and so I have been very open to the idea of beind a versitile designer. If I was asked just to design a particular space (for instance, a modular kitchen) for years then I’m sure I would have been stuck in a shell and be restricted to design the same for years. This was something which scared me the most and so I always make sure to maintian a balance in the projects we took up to design & execute. What would you suggest to new talents coming up as interior designers? I feel the most important thing one should understand being a designer is he should be able to read the client’s mind and make sure to focus more on their requirements rather than just putting up a concept in the form of a design to them. What do you think about the concepts being executed these days? There was a time when our clients were not ready to accept an out of the box concept as they were too hesitant to experience a divergent set all together, but I am really happy to see that times have changed drastically and that clients today have been more generous and are all set to experience any concept presented to them. The year 2018 is all set to say goodbye, any tips on interiors for the year 2019?

Anushree Reddy is a renowned name in the mainstream Fashion circles of India. With her golden embellishments and specific highlights on subdued and under toned dresses, the talented designer from Hyderabad has stolen many hearts in the fashion circuits and is also growing a very wide fan base in India. Having made her debute at the Lakme Fashion Week, 2013, Anushree Reddy is now the favorite of the brides from the most affluent families of India who opt specifically for her dresses at various multidesigner fashion stores. Subtle shades, vintage floral prints, and soft fabrics are the components of Anushree Reddy collections that make girls go gaga over it. Her line of eponymous clothing is all about elegance and romance in traditional Indian wear. It is fresh, young and wearable right from the selection of elegant prints to feminine cuts and elaborate embroideries, each silhouette is a delightful visual treat. “My turning point was being accepted by the Fashion Week. Even there, I made few mistakes initially. I learnt the ropes and got it right soon�, says the 31 year old who paved the way by being one of the first few to venture out of the city and carve a niche on the national ramp.
Tell us your story related to your career. How did Label by Anushree Reddy happen? Right after I got married, I wanted to do something productive as I had a lot of time on hand and that is how my label took baby steps towards becoming what it is. Everyone pursues a career in fashion out of a burning desire but honestly I just took one step at a time and never thought about where I’d go if I pursued this. With no formal training in fashion designing, I started with one local tailor who was very instrumental in motivating me to continue this and make it something big. My first batch of clothes were terrible to be honest. I sold them at an exhibition and most of them were bought by my own family members, just out of politeness, but I grew from my mistakes and improved my lack of imagination and finesse. It is what honed my skills and made me what I am today. What is the proudest moment in your career so far? The proudest moment of my career which I also think is the turning point of my career was when I finally got accepted into Fashion week!! I found my niche in wedding wear right after the success of my second collection. I put myself in the brides shoes and imagine what I would want if this were my wedding and that’s what always helps me get it right. The lack of professional training also helped me emerge as an original designer. I don’t follow rules, I just put things together, colours and fabrics that appeal to me and go from there. Even at the Fashion week I had made some mistakes but that’s my forte is guess; I always learn from them. What does it take to be successful in the field you excel? A few tips to upcoming stylists. It takes a lot of hard work and patience. Patience is the key to success and this is proven in my case. Also, don’t ever give
up if you fail in your first few attempts. Today, the first step for any upcoming designer is participating in the fashion week.

What is your personal style like? My personal favourites are hues of pastels. Chic, comfortable silhouettes. Tell us something about your family? I’m married into a prominent political family. My husband Jaiveer and I have 2 boys. When I was younger my parents were always chilled out and gave me all the permission to do whatever I wanted. I went to UK to complete my MBA and then got married with their blessings. My parents are my source of strength. Everyone has always been very supportive of my ‘tailoring endeavour’ since the beginning, including my in laws (as I live in a joint family) who are a true blessing to me and my work. I’m able to work in peace, knowing that my kids are well looked after.
Rapid Fire Three things you don’t leave home without? My bag and Phone. The third thing will be present in my bag anyways ;) What is the last lie you told someone? “There is no chocolate left at home” to my kids. Are you a morning person or a night person? A Morning person. What is your biggest addiction? Coffee. Cannot function without it. What store do you shop at most? Good Earth. Where would your next vacation be? Lisbon. Your one habit that you would like to change? I want to start eating healthier. Your most recent fashion purchase? A fine chikankari dupatta What is the one fashion trend you’d like to change? This breathtaking Porcelean Vase is situated in the founders gallery at the museum. It was produced by the Coalport Factory in 1897 to mark the Diamond Jubilee Anniversary of Queen Victoria. It is one of the 50 rarest pieces produced ever.
At the Salarjung Museum, there is a depiction of Middle East as well with its glassware and ceramic items. A few most loved objects from this section include the Chandeliers in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours.
The most intriguing treasure in the collection is the wooden statue of ‘Mephistopheles and Margaretta’ representing evil and good. From a single log of sycamore wood the sculptor has carved two distinct images on either side. The male image is clad in a hooded cloak, heeled boots and has a long gaunt face with a cynical smile, while Margaretta is shown as a shy, simple girl with a prayer book in one hand and downcast eyes, lost in love.

A bewildering variety and array of clocks greets the visitor in the clock room. There are ancient sundials in the form of obelisks to huge and modern clocks of the twentieth century. The variety includes the Bird cage clocks, Bracket clocks, Grandfather clocks, Skeleton clocks, etc. The museum is also having some good examples of the clocks of the contemporary period of Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Napolean 1st of France. How To Bring In Sankranthi With A Bang! - By Jessica David
The new year always brings with it a plethora of new festivals to look forward to and the one that not only raises all of our spirits but also raises a ton of kites into the sky (hint, hint, you know what I’m getting at) is definitely Makar Sankranthi- a mid winter Hindu festival! It is the only Hindu festival that is celebrated on a fixed date- 14th January, every year. Skies filled with an array of different coloured kites and the beginning of an auspicious new phase or the holy phase of transition, Sankranthi is celebrated by Hindus all over India. It also marks the end of an inauspicious phase which is said to begin around mid-December. Makar Sankranthi is said to be the bringer of warmer days and more sunlight. In a diverse country like India, Sankranthi is known by so many different names. Uttarayan in Gujarat, Pongal or Uzhavar Thirunal in Tamilnadu or by the Tamilians. In Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab it is named as Maghi. In our dear city Hyderabad, it is called Makar Sankranthi! The arrival of this festival brings along with it an elaborate preparation of delicious sweets and lip smacking savouries. This is all done before the festival in order to bring in the harvest period with pomp and joy. Women are seen offering the Shreemangalchandika Praapthi. Til laddus, Pongal, Pulihora are some of the delicacies prepared for this festival. Devotees pay respect to Goddess Saraswati. It is mostly celebrated in the agricultural cultivated areas of Andhra Pradesh and is known to be the festival that brings prosperity and money into their lives. The name Makar Sankranthi comes from the fact that at this point, the Sun enters the sphere of the Capricorn zodiac known as Makar, which perfectly defines the movement of the Sun to the sphere of Makara. Mangalhat, Dhoolpet
Dhoolpet is said to be a popular area to buy kites especially because it is the homeland of kite manufacturing and creating Manjas for flying. This is the place where everything is done, right from the manufacturing to the wholesale selling. The entire stretch from Mangalhat to Dhoolpet is filled with kite shops. Kites of various shapes and sizes and designs can be found in this area, so if you are a keen lover of kites, this will be a kite paradise for you. Head to Dhoolpet only if you consider yourself somewhat of an expert in gauging the quality of kites and manja. Most of the kite shopkeepers purchase their kites from here in bulk and then sell them at their respective shops so one good advantage of this place would be that the price of the kites will be pretty reasonable.
Begum Bazaar
There’s a gazillion shops in Begum Bazaar that sell kites but two famous shops that stand out from that vast list are Motilal and Balaji kite shops. These two famous shops that are in this business since decades, have made a name for themselves as those who sell quality kites and manjas. The prices here are fixed but definitely reasonable. These shops sell wholesale kites and are quite small and normally crowded therefore you can expect to find a small gathering whenever you go there. The shops are a little tricky to be located but you can ask any of the locals there and they will surely guide you. To have a great shopping experience, head to these shops at night. They are open until 9.30-10.30 at night and the crowd will be reasonably lesser when compared to the morningafternoon slots.
Gulzar House
Gulzar House has an old city charm to it. Located between Charminar and Madina building, this is a kite and manja market which dates back to decades. The place has dozens of shops starting from Gulzar House road till the Dabeerpura stretch. The whole stretch has kite shops that sell kites and manjas of different varieties. Buying at Gulzar House is very economical as you get to save some money, but at the same time you need to purchase at least dozen kites, because it is a wholesale market and the rates are fixed – no bargain. You will also find people preparing kites and manjas at Gulzar House. While some people go there for the cheap prices, many others do not prefer because the quality is not good. Some claim that Gulzar House kites tear quicker, and do not fly as well. So pick your choice well and go there if you want to save up some extra bucks. TULIP - JANUARY, 2019 41

Sankranthi Special Foooood!!
We stepped into the yummy kitchens of a few families and dug out the best Makar Sankranthi recipes that they were so pleased to share with us.
Sweet Pongal
A staple in most of the Tamilian houses who celebrate Pongal, this dish is a sure shot hit with those who savour the sweet taste and aroma of jaggery. Read on to find the recipe by Revathy SreedharIngredients: (serves 2) 1 cup Rice 1/2 cup Moong Dal 1 cup Jaggery Ghee- as per your requirements 7-8 Roasted Cashews 7-8 Dried Grapes Cinnamon- for garnish Directions: In a bowl, take 1 cup of Rice with 1/2 cup of Moong Dal. Wash then we’ll together before transferring them to a cooker with 4 cups of water and bring it all to a boil until the Rice and Dal is soft and cooked. To this mixture, add 1 cup of jaggery and bring this to a boil on medium or slow heat. Finally top your sweet Pongal with ghee, roasted cashews and dried grapes with a touch of cardamom powder. Sweet Pongal is good to go! It is a sweet but simple dish that has always won hearts in her family and has been a regular at all of their Sankranthi festivals.
Andhra Pulihora Rice
A regular in most of the Andhra households, Pulihora is often prepared during festivals and is offered as Naivedyam to the Gods. Cooked rice seasoned with tamarind paste and other basic ingredients like curry leaves, peanuts, chilies and turmeric, read to find the recipe by Umarani who has her roots in RajahmundryIngredients: (serves 2-3) 1.5 cups Rice 2 tbsp Oil 1 tbsp Sesame Oil 2 Sprigs Curry Leaves 2 Red Chilies, roughly broken ½ tsp Mustard 1 tbsp Channa Dal / Senagapappu 1 tbsp Urad Dal 2 to 3 tbsp Peanuts
1 pinch Hing Salt as needed 1 handful Tamarind or 4 tbsp thick Tamarind pulp (adjust to suit your taste) 2 Green Chilies slit (if not for naivedyam) ½ tsp Ginger finely chopped (optional) Turmeric as needed ½ tsp Roasted Sesame Seeds Powder (optional) ½ tsp Jaggery (optional)
Directions: Wash and soak tamarind in hot water for some time. Squeeze and make a thick paste. Pass it through a filter to discard stones and pulp. Wash and Cook rice till just done. Do not make the rice mushy. Grains must be separated. Cool the rice on a wide plate. Sprinkle salt, turmeric and 1 tbsp. sesame oil evenly. Leave it aside till the seasoning is ready. When the rice cools down mix the rice with sprinkled turmeric and salt. If needed use more turmeric to get a nice color. Heat a pan with oil, add peanuts, dal and fry till golden, add curry leaves, green chilies, red chilies and ginger if using. Fry till the red chilies turn crisp. Add hing, tamarind pulp, jaggery and little more salt. Cook till the mixture thickens otherwise pulihora will be very moist. Off the heat, add powdered mustard or sesame seeds powder to the rice, give a quick stir do not let the mixture fry in the pan. Add the seasoning to the rice. Mix well. Do not mix while the rice is hot. Serve tamamrind rice or pulihora with fresh homemade curd. 42 JANUARY, 2019 TULIP

Sajje Bhakri
In a few households, Sankranthi is also known as Bhogi. A favourite Bhogi special in any Madhwa house is always the special - ‘Sajje Bhakri’ You may also call it Bajre ki roti with ‘tumbkaay palya’ a stuffed brinjal curry. This is a must have combination dish on Bhogi. It is mostly the only time they ever prepare it. Making the bhakri is very simple but needs a lot of patience and technique. Here’s how we make it, right from the kitchen of Leela. Ingredients to make the roti : 3 cups Bajra Flour Salt to taste 1 ½ cup of Lukewarm Water Toasted Sesame seeds Directions: Sift the bajra flour in a mixing bowl. Knead the dough well 1/4 cup of lukewarm water at a time, until it comes together in a smooth ball. Keep adding small amounts of water at a time and kneed well to release the gluten. Divide the dough into 6 small portions. Dust the work surface with some dry flour. Meanwhile heat a skillet or tava over medium heat. Take the sesame seeds in small plate and coat the dough ball with the seeds and start flattening the dough ball with your palm. Tip : Use the tip of your fingers to press and rotate the roti. Place the roti on the hot tava and cook for a minute on each side until you see a few bubbles appear. Lift the roti from the tava and roast it directly on the flame for a few seconds, this makes the roti crispy. Apply Ghee on both sides of the roti once it’s cooked and serve it with the ‘tumbkaay curry’.
Sabudana Kheer
A traditional must have during most Hindu festivals, this dessert is counted as a comfort food and also something to keep you warm during these cold months. It is nutritious and yummy at the same time. This recipe has been shared from the kitchen of two households on opposite sides of the spectrum; one North Indian and one South Indian, connected through the matrimony of their son and daughter but the love with which it is prepared remains the same.
IngredientsSabudana- 1 cup Semiya(Bambino)- 1 cup Jaggery as per your taste Dry Fruits- a handful Milk 1-2 cups Cow ghee 2-3 tbsp Cardamom 1 tsp Cinnamon 1 tsp Pistachio flakes for garnish
Directions: 1. Take 1 cup of sabudana and add 3 cups of water in it, put them into a cooker. 2. Boil until you hear at least 5-6 whistles. 3. Meanwhile, take another utensil, put 2-3tbsp cow ghee into it. 4. Add cardamom powder and cinnamon into it. Also add dry fruits of your choice. 5. Boil some water in another utensil and melt some jaggery (sweet as per your taste). Cool it down to room temperature. 6. Filter the diluted jaggery and pour into the other utensil that has dry fruits. 7. Let it all boil together for a while and then add the boiled sabudana into it. 8. Close the lid and let it boil for 3-5 minutes 9. Add 1-2 cups of milk into this. Mix it well. Let it boil for 10-15 minutes at low flame. 10. Garnish it with pistachio flakes and enjoy the super silk textured scrumptious sabudana kheer. TULIP - JANUARY, 2019 43

Sankranti, also known as Pongal, is the first festival of the year and the most awaited one. I start my day with decorating the entrance with colorful rangoli (there’s always a competition between neighbors for best rangoli). Then comes the excitement of wearing your ‘new’ clothes specially shopped for the occasion. By this time I’m already hungry because I can smell the yummy delicacies from the kitchen but mom asks me to wait until the pooja. Time to fly kites until then! We serve the food to God and finish with the Aarthi. We serve food to the crow (signifies our ancestors) in the terrace. Food usually includes sweet pongal (made with jaggery, rice and dry fruits, medhu vada, rice, sambar, potato fry, rasam, lime rice etc. Food is usually served on a banana leaf (makes it really yummy. Trust me!!!) We then proceed to visit relative’s house in the evening to exchange food and prasadam. We usually have a kite flying competition and then head back home for the night. This summarizes my entire day.

Makara Sankranti for us marks the beginning of the 6 month auspicious period in the Hindu calendar called as ‘Uttarayana parvakaala’. This is the time when the Sun the God ‘Surya’ starts to travel towards the North start in his chariot at mighty speed. Sankranthi at my home is celebrated over 3 days: Bhogi, Kari and Sankranti. My day usually starts with making a colorful rangoli in front of the house. I love how colorful the streets looks with all the rangolis during this festival. The rangoli is usually made with rice flour and colours. On Sankrati day, we exchange ‘Ellu bella’ with our relatives and neighbors. The ingredients of this sweet dish are tosted coconut and sesame seeds, misri, gaggery and candied fennel seeds. It is a token to show that hence forth the relationship will be as sweet as Ellu bella with no bitterness involved. May this Sankrati bring good health and prosperity to all!

Every year I go to my village to celebrate this festival. My memories of Sankranthi involve flying kites, lighting bonfires, devouring scrumptious food and having a wonderful time with my cousins on the terrace. I love making rangoli with my mom. This is a festival of peace and prosperity and a new beginning.

What makes Sankranthi stand apart from the other Festivals is the fact that the date is fixed. I’m blessed to be experiencing this festival with a culture amalgamation. My mom being a South Indian, dad from northern India & I am happily married to a Telanganite. Dad hosts a family get-together. Everyone’s dressed up traditionally & we’ve vibrant decors. This day is also my Dadima’s birthday. We remember her, express gratitude, relish scrumptious food and enjoy her signature dishes as well. Then, we (youngsters) catch up, play games while our elders have nice chats, re-live and revive their childhood. We end the day with a puja and exchanging of gifts. This wonderful day with family helps us kick start the year ahead with love & positivity keeping our roots strong.

Sankranthi is the most famous festival in the Andhra side and since I hail from there, I like celebrating this festival with all of the traditions and customary rituals that it usually calls for. This is a very important festival especially for the farmers and people from the agricultural areas of the villages as their hard work finally brings in the harvest and rewards and a prosperous money inflow is on the cards. It is a celebration of the harvest that comes after a long struggle and is something I wholly partake in. As I take care of the family business, this is an important period as we dedicate our returns to God Almighty so that our businesses flourish even more. We also invite any newly married couple in the family to come over so that their new beginning can be celebrated with elan. A lot of yummy festival foods fill the air as a new beginning calls for eating until you can’t anymore! It is more of a small town festival than a metropolitan festival, hence I always like going back to my roots where I can celebrate this festival the way it is supposed to be. I wake up early in the morning and help with the beautiful rangolis that adorn our doorstep and eagerly await the visit of Haridasu into our homes to fill it with peace and joy. We also worship “Gaumaata” and adorn ourselves with beautiful langa-voni, which is the traditional dress of the festival. As a modern iteration of what is new and fiercely sui generis, the 14th edition of the renowned Blenders Pride Fashion Tour celebrated the self and the individual through its extraordinary new concept- ‘Pride’. Kickstarting the conceptualisation of the show in the great City of Pearls, renowned designer Gaurav Gupta showcased his latest couture collection for the first time in Hyderabad. A weave of magic blended into his work, he curated a spectacular affair with his breath-taking designs; and an immersive theatrical experience by artists collective, CROW which brought together fashion and conceptual art. Adding to the charm of that evening were showstoppers, Aditi Rao Hydari and Kangana Ranaut, who looked stunning in Gaurav’s masterpieces.

External appearance contributes very little to a person’s beauty. Who is your timeless beauty icon? In films, it is Savithri garu, always. In reality, for me it is my grandmother, and my mother who are my beauty icons. My grandmother lived for 101 years, and even at that age she conducted herself beautifully. I adore my mother, who is 75 years now because of how rhythmically beautiful her life is organised. It inspires me every day. Are there any tips/ suggestions that you would like to give the younger generations? I prefer to not give any suggestions but, what I believe is, every person is beautiful and unique, and there is no particular definition of beauty. We definitely need to use beauty products to protect ourselves, especially since I am always on the go and shoot ‘on location’, with harsh lights, reflectors, and under direct sunlight. My ‘go-to’ products are a good facewash, and a strong sunscreen. Regular visits with my dermatologist for a healthy skin, is an effort that I put in. Kedarnath A Hindu-Muslim love story, Kedarnath portrays how a Muslim pithoo saves a Hindu tourist from the Uttrakhand floods at the pilgrimage, and the love that eventually develops between them. The movie has received mixed reviews, from it being cliche to poorly directed. However the audience found the movie strong with emotions and loved the breathtaking site of Uttarakhand.
Aquaman From Director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, starring Jason Momoa in the title role of Aquaman. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, halfAtlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be‌a king.
Bhairava Geetha Even though the story is old, the premise in which it is set looks good. The Rayalaseema backdrop is nicely elevated during the first half an hour. The actor Dhananjay who played the role of Katta Reddy was top notch and Heroine Irra Mor looks beautiful and gives the audience a feast with her great screen presence. The interval bang and some thrills in the first part are good and create a devastating effect on the viewers.
