Greece

A compilation of all things we are obsessing over this month

The Punisher

This brutal and grounded thriller is the best Marvel TV show out there. After exacting revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife and children, Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) uncovers a conspiracy that runs far deeper than New York’s criminal underworld. Now known throughout the city as The Punisher, he must discover the truth about injustices that affect more than his family alone. The extremely strong ensemble cast -- which also includes Paul Schulze as CIA heavy William Rawlins and Shohreh Aghdashloo as Madani’s mother Farah -- is the perfect complement to the deft and detail-driven storyline crafted by creator and showrunner Steve Lightfoot and his creative team. They deserve some mighty lengthy applause for what they bring to life in these 13 episodes. We get to see a huge variety of insane fights, from tactical gun battles to gun-free brawls to blood-soaked duels.

Ancient sun-bleached ruins pierce blue skies as the Aegean laps at the endless coastline. And Greek culture is alive with passionate music, inspired cuisine and thrill-seeking activities. Encounter bold modern art, the melancholic throb of rembetika (blues songs) and artisans creating new work from traditional techniques. Greece has endless cultural pursuits and a calendar bursting with festivals, holidays and exhibits. Wander along cobbled Byzantine footpaths, hike into volcanoes, watch for dolphins and sea turtles, and cycle through lush forests. Or simply hop on a boat and set sail into the glittering blue beyond.

Cross your legs. At least, cross your ankles. These are standing and universal instructions to women from their mothers, sisters, grandmas and random strangers. This is not just in public, but even if you’re at home, with your family. The sight of men, sitting comfortably with their legs open in a bus or a metro has never been a matter of concern; however, a woman sitting in similar manner often tends to invite disapproving gazes and negative comments. To break the gender stereotype, women across the world have been sharing photos of themselves, legs akimbo, on Instagram with the hashtag #womanspreading, and the movement is just getting stronger with even celebrities seemingly joining in with the the power pose.

Guys coming from reputed families seem to have forgotten their manners. It comes as no surprise that male ego is very fragile but, is not being able to handle rejection and instead, telling your friends it was you who ended things and spreading false rumours about the girl really worth it? Does it make you feel better about your insecurities, honey? 14 JANUARY, 2018 - TULIP

LIFESTYLE

Over a Cappuccino with Akshay Neelakantam Akshay Neelankantam, born and brought up in Hyderabad is a fitness fanatic. He has won the prestigious title of Mr. India 2017 and is looking to make his debut in Tollywood movies as a villain.

Tell us something about yourself? I am a Leo and my traits make my sun sign extremely evident. By profession, I am the Director of Hotel Jaya International & Proprietor, and Body Building India – NRK Agencies. By passion, I am a fitness model and actor. I have done my Engineering in Electronics and MBA in Marketing & Finance. I am a huge foodie and a fitness fanatic by nature. Describe your journey of Mr.India? My journey started in Jan 2017. I had enrolled for the competition in Jan 2017. From then, I had fixed my schedule and sorted out my diet. I owe my workouts to Mr. Kiran Kumar. He is my coach/guide/master when it comes to fitness. He is completely responsible for making me physically ready for the competition. My diet and workout was on point. I still remember getting onto Keto diet for about 6 months. For the last 3 months I had given up salt. My food used to be completely bland and boiled (High protein and fibre diet). I also used to read a lot of articles to improve my intellectual skills. We were asked to report at the Hotel Retreat on 26th June 2017. We were kept under strict observation for 5 whole days. We were judged based on looks, talent, personality, body and ramp walk. On 29th June, I had qualified into the top 16. On 30th June, it was a day long event. We were asked to walk the ramp in traditional as well as 16 JANUARY, 2018 - TULIP

formals. I still remember not eating anything the entire day. The result was declared at 10 pm. I was on stage with tears in my eyes and voice from my heart yelling “YESSSS!!! We have done it Akshay!” Tell us about your daily routine? My day starts of pretty late as I work till the late hours of the night. I tend to wake up by 10 am and hit the store by 12 pm. I am at my store till 6 pm looking after orders and sorting out deliveries for the day. As we deal in supplements and nutritional products. It’s very important to speak to each of my customers and guide them accordingly. I tend to hit the gym by 7 pm. 7 pm to 10 pm is my “NO PHONE ZONE”. My

workout time is the most peaceful time of the day for me. I have my dinner by 11 pm and get to work. I work on the workout and diet plans for my online clients. I plan their schedules and update their progress. I tend to crash around 3 am. What do you do in your leisure time if not working? I rarely get any leisure time. It’s only on Sundays that I get to sleep till my heart is happy. Sundays are generally my off days if I don’t have any shoots or shows scheduled. I take a complete break from my workout and diet on Sundays. How do you manage your work and personal life? I am fortunate enough that my work is my passion. My personal life to an extent is my work. My personal life is always reserved for the weekends. Saturday night is reserved for my friends and Sunday lunch is with my family. That’s how it helps me get back my energy to take on the week ahead. Your Fitness mantra? I believe in the concept that “A fit body represents a calm mind”. Fitness is never about a destination but it’s a lifestyle. In order to keep fit, you have to be consistent, hardworking and dedicated every single day. You need to inculcate discipline and keep following it every single day in order to get and stay fit.

What is your personal style like? I really don’t understand or believe in the concept of style. I feel that every person needs to have a personality. It’s like a barcode of that person. I am generally seen in casuals unless you bump into me at an event where you would find me suited up or in semi formals. No matter what I wear, you’d always see me confident and positive. I generally do what I do best- improvise.

LIFESTYLE

What is next for you? Right now, I have a few fashion shows and shoots in hand. But, I’m also looking for work in Tollywood. I would love to do a negative role as I feel I can do justice to it. Tell us something about family? My family is everything to me. I lost my father about 2 years back. He was and still is my Idol. Whatever I am today, the person that I am who is capable of standing on his own feet is because of my father. I was extremely close to him and only both of us knew the bond we shared. My mum, Kavitha Neelakantam is a housewife. I have a younger brother, Anush Neelakantam. He is doing his M.Sc in the USA. I am extremely close to one person in my family - Divya Bhojraj In relation she is my aunt but she is my go to person for my good, bad and ugly things in life. How has your life changed after winning the title of Mr. India? My life has completely changed post winning the title. People recognize me now. I have been getting good opportunities post the title. People look up to me as an inspiration which makes me feel so honoured. I always wanted to inspire people and motivate them. I am so glad that I am able to do this now. It’s the love I receive from the people that helps me keep my feet on the ground and yet aim for the stars. Did you always want to be in the fashion industry? I always wanted to be famous for the right reasons. I started my step into this industry post my 12th by joining a modelling course. It took me 5 long years to get my body into shape. Fashion industry fascinates me as it’s got a new thing to learn every single day. It keeps maturing and evolving day by day.

Rapid Fire What’s your favourite 90’s jam? One song that gets me all pepped up and ready to take on the world is “Nothing else Matters by Metallica”. It’s my all-time favourite. Pay most for what item of clothing? I have a shoe fetish. I spend loads on shoes. I currently have 42 pairs of footwear. Three places you would rather be right now? Shooting for my movie on the beach in Bali, chilling in Las Vegas with my friends, playing poker on a family vacation in Shimla. What freaks you out? I hate lizards. I just can’t stand them. Are you a morning person or night person? Definitely a night person Kiss, marry and kill? Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt Kiss - Deepika Padukone (She is too damn hot) Marry - Priyanka Chopra (She is the perfect woman) Kill - Alia Bhatt (I actually wouldn’t kill her but would definitely love to be good friends with her as I think she is extremely sweet and happy go lucky types)

An Empowering Leader A professional hotelier and an avid biker, Ravi Khubchandani, the General Manager of Novotel Hotel Shamshabad, is a people’s person who effortlessly connects with his team as well as his clients. He is a pragmatic innovator who is constantly working towards ideas and solutions to benefit all stakeholders of the business. Describe a typical day at work. There is perhaps no typical day in an hotelier’s life! My day usually begins with a quick meeting with my HODs and after that, it’s an incredible journey that involves engaging with several stakeholders for various agendas. Every hour brings along new challenges and opportunities, making the days slightly long but extremely exciting! What are the challenges that you have faced as the General Manager of Novotel? Hospitality in general and Hyderabad in specific has been evolving at a very fast pace with constant changes in business dynamics. For Novotel Hyderabad Airport, my team and I have worked diligently to adapt ourselves better to the ever-changing requirements of our guests and achieve a unique perception and positioning for the hotel. The hotel with its services and features is the first choice for guests looking for a weekend getaway or for a venue for corporate events, weddings and social celebrations! Albeit with an enthusiastic team, this has never felt like a challenge; instead, it has been an enriching adventure. How would you describe your leadership style? I don’t particularly follow a specific style of leadership. I believe the best way to operate is to create and work closely with an enthusiastic team that has the aspiration and zeal to achieve the common goal of excelling together. I also believe in the new-age operational style that boasts of a rather flat and approachable hierarchy that embraces new ideas and innovation; this, in turn, helps in sailing through the most complex of situations with great ease and also constantly staying ahead of the curve. What are the changes you’ve made to ensure better functioning of the hotel? During my time at Novotel Hyderabad Airport, I have made constant efforts to revive & enhance the team’s energy and sentiment whilst inducing a strong sense of ownership and autonomy that helps everyone to always look further and go beyond! We have also made the hotel extremely adaptable to the needs of our guests with lot more passion, warmth and innovation in our service. The team is also more agile and adept at best catering to the needs of our business and leisure guests alike! What according to you are the top three reasons that make Novotel different from the other hotels? Novotel Hyderabad Airport is a distinct hotel offering unique features like the sports arena where you can enjoy a game of tennis, basketball, sandpit- volleyball etc. We also house one of the largest gyms in the city along with a picturesque swimming pool and other indoor activities like table tennis and pool table. All of these complemented with serene and tranquil surroundings make Novotel Hyderabad

Airport an ideal venue for a family staycation. Our banquets of various configurations and huge open-air venues also make us the ideal destination for corporate events, weddings and other lifestyle and automotive events. How can social media be used as an asset in the hotel industry? Social media is an irreplaceable part of everyone’s personal and professional lives today. Social media provides hotels with a farreaching, fast and cost-effective medium to showcase their features and services to the target audience. Social media has also helped us get detailed insights on the emerging trends and the pulse of our guests in real time; eventually, this information can be certainly utilized for revenue generation opportunities. What was your most successful event to date? It is very difficult to select one event from a series of hugely successful events that we have hosted at the hotel. Nonetheless, I would like to make a mention of an automobile launch event at the hotel late last year, that spanned over 20 days with a tight back-to-back schedule of events not only in various venues of the hotel but also in some distant and complex outdoor locations. The mettle and perseverance of the team were tested and we emerged successful with substantial revenues and a very happy and loyal client! What do you do in your leisure time? I’m a biker and I love going for rides with my friends and even by myself! Being at Novotel Hyderabad Airport, I get easy access to some serene and interesting biking terrains in the vicinity. Where do you see yourself in the next five years? Once an hotelier always an hotelier! In the years ahead, I look forward to many more exciting and challenging opportunities that will keep evolving me as an hotelier. Your inspiration and why? This might sound a little idealistic but my inspirations are the delighted guests and an ever energetic team that is always raring to go!

The Social Media Mavens

Becoming a social media influencer is sizzling right now and it’s a job that many millennials dream of having. You see all these bloggers and vloggers travelling globally inspiring wanderlust (and sometimes envy), earning huge sums of money, sharing their expertise with their followers and maybe even changing the world. Blogging and publishing content on social media can be a hobby for some, and a full-time career for others. It also allows brands to connect with their audience in a more organic way, when compared to the traditional forms of digital advertising. It may seem all merry and bright but a lot more goes into being a social media influencer than just picking the perfect filter. We’ve got for you the best bloggers of Hyderabad sharing their views on how they think social media has influenced the various industries. - By Rabica Zulfiqar

Ishna Rawlani,

@ishnarawlani My style is very experimental! I don’t believe in sticking to one genre, I love trying all new things possible. With changing times, social media is playing a major role! The question isn’t about how social media is influencing the fashion industry; it’s all about how much the fashion industry has blossomed because of digital marketing and media! I owe everything to Facebook & Instagram, it has helped me connect with people all over the country and I can collaborate with them. Various brands and I connect through the power of visibility that only social media has bestowed upon us! It’s not that blogging is a new concept, there have always been people who blogged, vlogged and documented their life on websites but they started gaining popularity when people starting posting on social media through platforms like Instagram/ Facebook or Twitter. It is something we can’t do without and that helps us stay strong in the game! Tip: Always be consistent and don’t stop, it’s all about the quality and not quantity. Keep doing the good work and opportunities will come your way. 20 JANUARY, 2018 - TULIP

Bold And Beautiful

LIFESTYLE

Classy And Fabulous

Satpreet Kaur,

@fashioneatista Being a lifestyle blogger, I write about things I am passionate about like good food, luxury travel, experiential reviews and a lot more with a mix of style in everything. All the pictures on my blog are clicked by me, well except the ones I am posing for, of course. I am a lover of aesthetics and I think that is something that comes to me very naturally. Since I work full time, this is more of a growing passion for me and I choose things to do or brands to associate accordingly. I like to give full attention to details and put my best in whatever I am doing, I love multitasking when I am on the move but when I am penning it all down I prefer doing one thing at a time. My style, however, is very classy and feminine. Anything that is vintage is my inspiration; from floral prints, ruffles, maxi dress and of course denim. I feel social media has a great influence in everything we do. To pick a restaurant we browse Zomato, to pick a holiday we read endless curated destination lists, to pick an outfit we can now see how to style it before buying it and if it suits a particular body type. I think it’s made everything a lot easier all in the comfort of our smartphones. Tip- when I finalise a destination, I read a lot about it and make my own list of things to do and places to visit. Dazzling Diva

Shiwangi Vijaywargiya,

@Shiwangivijaywargiya I like to play around with all kinds clothing adding my tinge to it making it versatile for a normal girl to walk in. It was only self-interest which grew over time and I decided to give it a try. A large part of social media is influenced by the fashion industry as it has always been active and has been changing its way of approach to reach the target market. For the fashion industry to present themselves easy and on the fingertips of a huge part of the crowd which is always active on such a platform is a huge plus point. I would also say it’s an impressive marketing strategy adopted in recent times to communicate with a large chunk of audience exposing the products. As said, marketing is fuel for the fashion industry. Fashion brands use social media for advertising and to engage their target market. Other uses include reporting on fashion news, providing customers with company updates and announcements about new fashion lines, events and promotions. Technology has finally made its stand stronger in our country where it was of a thing to have internet back in the days which is what is fuelling the reach of brands, offers, promotions new launches etc through social media now Tip: To never look back is my go-to mantra. Start wherever you are and keep it going until you reach where you want to be.

The Soulful Writer Devesh Baheti,

@_thenakedsoul_ My personal style is very laid back. It oscillates between simple, clean structures, in muted colours. Normcore androgynous wear in larger structures is particularly my favourite a of dressing up. It’s fuss-free, minimalistic but also stylish at the same time. Comfort and confidence inspire me. I feel that the immense reach and popularity of social media has made fashion more democratic. Earlier it used to be a few elite people, who’d have a say in what the trend is, or how successful it is, but due to the reach of the digital age, everyone has an instant opinion. This kind of instant feedback has opened many doors for the industrywallas to take notes and see what works or doesn’t. Take in case, Sabyasachi, Ayush Kejriwal or Anita Dongre - all these designers rely heavily on the impact their photo stories have on their followers because they’ve hit the sweet note of being able to milk out of this opportunity given to them. Also, a whole new career has been given importance to because of the rise and rise of social media’s influence on fashion - that of Fashion Blogging. Tip: Don’t try to ape someone else. If your aesthetic is of a Sabyasachi Kanjeevaram Saree, you rock those 9 yards like no one else ever has. Or if it’s a Vera Wang Gown, so be it. Your personal style has got to speak about your personality. It’s the cover of your book. Let it be as authentic as you can have it be. TULIP - JANUARY, 2018 23

@krutikasingh1421 For me, style is all about comfort. Hailey Baldwin is my inspiration I absolutely love her style! It’s totally street style and she pulls off every look with great finesse. Also, my mother inspires me every day. Social media is an amazing platform for communication between the producers and the consumers. It’s the best way for people to know what is new and what the latest styles are and based on the response of the customers, the designers can understand what attracts them and what styles are more customer friendly. People are best connected through social media and it’s a really easy way for the designers to publicize their brands. Brands also collaborate with models, photographers, bloggers through which their work reaches a wider audience. Fashion which not only has clothes but also shoes and accessories which are new and different and fresh every day is really benefited by this. So social media and fashion run parallel and work well together and make the work of the consumers and producers much more easy and quick. It reaches and attracts millions of customers through visual images. The customers are the lead in this process and social media plays a major role in the growth of fashion industry and makes the world a fashionable happy place. Tip: Whatever you wear, wear it with confidence as that’s what matters the most!

COVER STORY Here is what people around the city are up to on Sankranti! Rashmi Thakur, Indian

model and actress, who has won Miss Planet India 2016, Miss Andhra Pradesh 2014 and was also Miss Asia International 1st runner-up has made India proud. She is currently working on her brand launch which exports handlooms abroad which is soon going to be out. She wants to restore the Indian heritage.

Tell us something about yourself? I am a free spirit and love to travel. I have been around the world, explored different places and cuisines. I also love music and I’m an animal lover. Well, I am passionate about cars, watches and handbags; I also own some of the best. How did you feel when you won a pageant? Well, my entry to beauty pageant happened by accident, I cherish the moment always. I was also the 1st runner-up of Miss Asia International. Whenever I think about my first crowning moment I feel very thrilled and it gives me the sense of achievement in life. Being in an International pageant where I was representing India was a proud moment for me especially when people call you not by your name but by your country. It was a very exhilarating moment for me to be part of an international platform and winning it. I loved the experience. How was the journey so far? My journey was not all smooth; it was a roller coaster ride. Sometimes up and down, but it was definitely a fun ride. I would have regretted if I wouldn’t have been in this industry since I got to learn a lot and saw myself growing. Tell us something about your work? Apart from being a model right now, I am working on my handloom brand. My idea is to restore the heritage of Indian culture, in the process I want to promote handlooms abroad and ensure that the weavers get work. So I am launching my very own brand to export handlooms overseas directly from weavers. Our designers are coming up with extraordinary patterns to meet the today’s fashion trends.

COVER STORY Ditya Reddy, Arjun Reddy and their children Advaith and Deekshita What are your Sankranti traditions? Well Sankranti is a very important festival to me like it is to most people. Coming to traditions: one day before Sankranti, on Bhogi day we light up a bonfire before dawn. This symbolizes a new dawn with new hope. Another important tradition is that we offer prayers to the lord of the sun on this day and also pray to our ancestors for their blessings. This is a tradition that usually most people follow, which we do too. Our traditions mean a lot to us as a family. Why is Sankranti so important to you? Sankranti is an important festival across India, it has a number of different names, like Gudi Padwa or Lohri and so on so forth. We call it Makara Sankranti; it is celebrated when the sun moves into the Capricorn sign. It is the festival of the Harvest. Sankranti is like an Indian version of Thanksgiving, we are thankful for the food we eat and also for all the luxuries. It is a festival that is prominent; it revolves around all the things that we are grateful for. What is it that your children and husband love and enjoy doing on Sankranti? Well, all of us have different things that we like to do on this day apart from the traditional lunch we have with our parents and in-laws. My husband is very particular about kite flying, he absolutely enjoys it. We fly kites in the evening with friends and family. The kid’s feast on the traditional sweets specially made for Sankranti. A few of our friends have Sankranti celebrations in their villages sometimes. If we

happen to go there, I enjoy watching rooster fights or gambling but with minimal stakes, just as a little fun element. Any secret recipes or dishes you would like to share with us? I can barely cook to save my life, so I don’t have any ‘secret’ recipes. But usually, my favourite sweets during the festive season are Pootharekulu and Nippati. Pootharekulu is made with sugar and a thin paper-like substance which is edible. Nippati is made with jaggery and flour. Both are typical Telugu sweets. What is your traditional go to for Sankranti? Our traditional go-to is our parents and in-laws place, as that’s where we get all the traditional food, advice and knowledge about the festival.

Shilpa Chowdary, Srinivas Prasad and their son Sai Durga Krissh What are your Sankranti traditions? We keep it pretty simple on Sankranti. We ignite the Bhogi bonfire a day before Sankranti. On the day of Sankranti we conduct an elaborate puja, we pray for good fortune, luck and happiness. After the puja, we feast on bowls of Pongal and sesame ladoos. We then get the blessings of our elders, my in-laws, and we look at the previous year in retrospect. Why is Sankranti so important to you? I adore the festival of Sankranti; it’s one of those festivals where the golden thread of love binds you together as a family. Sankranti is that time of the year when I am truly grateful and thankful to the Lord for everything he has blessed me with, all the luxuries and good things that have come my way. It is a festival where you don’t just thank god for all things that are material and have a monetary basis, you thank him for all the love, joy and beauty that he has enveloped you in. Sankranti also holds a deep connection with me; it marks the triumph of good against evil. It’s about shunning pessimism and adopting optimism.

What is it that your children and husband love and enjoy doing on Sankranti? My son is ecstatic when Sankranti rolls around; his requests for kites begin weeks before Sankranti day. My husband takes to his childlike innocence, and my son and he have a gala time flying kites on the rooftop in the biting breeze. We also go to the Hyderabad Golf Club Sankranti festival and my son is bedazzled by the counters selling warm Nutella crepes and tandoori. My husband enjoys the traditional food prepared at home, especially the Nippati. He is a fan of the steaming bowl of Pongal that is our little Sankranti tradition. Any secret recipes or dishes you would like to share with us? I’m not the greatest cook, I wish I was *laughs*. But I do adore sesame Laddoos, Vadai and Perugu Garelu. I am a major fangirl for Vadai, it is just something about the golden crispy Vadai that sets off an alarm in my brain. Laddoos and Perugu Garelu come second in line. Nothing beats the Vadai. What is your traditional go-to for Sankranti? Well I enjoy being unconventional, but with regard to Sankranti I bring out the traditional guns. I enjoy dressing up in traditional weaves, silk sarees or ikat sarees being my favourite. I also enjoy reflecting and praying alongside my husband. I like decorating the house traditionally, with marigold ‘maalas’ and purchasing new clothes to redress the god statue that is installed in my puja room. I would have to say, traditionally, Makara Sankranti is one of my favourite festivals all year-round. It symbolizes a fortunate year to come.

Suit Up Every man should own a great suit. Zero exceptions. John Hamm’s role in Mad Men pretty much single-handedly made suiting glamorous again. Wearing a suit makes men feel confident, and look great. While a great suit will make you feel and look sharp, world-wise, and sophisticated, a bad one will make you look like a hack or some man-child who still gets dressed by his mommy. It isn’t merely about donning a suit. There’s so much that goes into wearing one. It’s all about a glove-like fit and attention to detail. Don’t be bogged down by the rules. If there’s one thing that guarantees instant attention, that of the good kind, everywhere you go, it’s your own suit. So it helps to know a thing or two about buying, wearing, and caring for the one you choose. Every guy even Ralph Lauren himself started as a suit virgin, and we know that your first time standing in the suiting section can be overwhelming. Our suit guide is here to help you find a great suit, at whatever price you choose to pay, that’ll make you look smart, handsome, and like you’ve got the world hooked.

30 JANUARY, 2018 - TULIP

FASHION

The fabric should depend on how frequently you wear the suit. Go for more durable fabrics for everyday wear.

Unfasten the buttons while sitting down. This one is a must. Unless you want to spoil your suit or look like a stuffed potato or maybe both! Button the shirt at the top. While you’re at it, do ensure that you’re not choking yourself out. In case you are, please change the shirt.

A pocket square adds an extra level of polish, but make sure it doesn’t match your tie in either pattern or fabric choice. Before you go totally conservative, remember that the pocket square is where you get the most freedom and the one place you get to add a little oomph to your suit.

The last button should always be open. The last button of your suit is purely for aesthetic purposes. You don’t need to bother with it. Keep it open. Always!

Thin Lapels are more modern. Wide lapels are more old-school, Mad Men style.

Don’t go overboard with accessories. If you are trying to look clean and sophisticated, just let your suit do the talking. When it comes to dressing up, less is indeed more.

If you wear suspenders, don’t wear belts. The purpose of suspenders is to hoist up your trousers, just like a belt. Donning both is redundant.

TULIP - JANUARY, 2018 31

FASHION The colour of your tie has to be in contrast with your suit. If it’s a dark coloured suit, make sure to get a tie in a lighter shade and if it’s a light coloured suit then opt for a darker shade.

Sleeve cuffs should be exposed about half an inch. For a harmonious look, try to match the visible cuff length to the amount of collar that is visible at the back of the neck.

The shoulders of the suit should hug your shoulders. With a suit, it’s all about the fit. And the true test of your suit rests on your shoulders. There shouldn’t be any gap between the shirt’s collar and the suit. Those are the signs of ill-fitting and it always looks tacky.

For a corporate look, opt for a doublebreasted jacket with a notched lapel. Even in these, leave the last button open. Tie Knots should be of decent size because size does matter here as well. Anything too big is jarring and too small fails to make a mark. Always go with the classic Windsor knot for your tie.

Double vents in the back are more modern and fashionable. This look is also more flattering for larger figures, and it gives you enough room to do that effortlessly causal “hand in pocket” thing.

32 JANUARY, 2018 - TULIP

The tie-bar should not be wider than the tie. It’s like wearing trousers too long for your legs. Agreed they solve the purpose but there’s something to be said about aesthetics and visuals too, right?

Now that you know all that you need to know about suits, so go ahead and suit right up.

I came to Hyderabad with one backpack and stayed at a hotel that I knew of. I told them that I would stay there for the time being but would make the payment later. Then, I started going around districts offering my proposals for business and that’s how I got my first tender which immediately changed my career. After that, I paid the hotel bill, bought my first office space, car and a flat. Right now I am fully settled in Hyderabad running 5 companies and I am currently planning to set up a business in the education sector too. I don’t have any interests/hobbies as such; I don’t like partying or going out with friends, all I want to do is business and make a name for myself.” He is a happy go lucky person who likes to travel alone and loves his cars. “I like to travel alone in my car and explore the city of Hyderabad; that’s my muse.” He has done civil engineering after which he got into the construction business and gradually moved to transportation, which turned out to be a success, and there was no looking back since. Kranthi believes that wearing a suit gives you a sense of power. “Wearing a suit is like a pride for a businessman. It gives you the feeling of being in control and makes you look professional.” When asked about where he wants to see himself 5 years from now he says “Every famous person has the tagline like Aishwarya Rai is beautiful or say Ambani is known for being the richest person so 5 years from now I want to see myself getting a tagline like a successful businessman”.

BEAUTY

fresh start

Do you have a huge collection of lipsticks, bronzers, serums, eyeshadows and body lotions and end up running late every morning because you can’t find anything? For any makeup lover, *cough* hoarder, *cough* storing your beloved products and losing your favourite red lipstick in your sea of colourful nail polish can seem a little overwhelming at times. Instead of having your makeup shoved haphazardly into closets, rolling around the drawers, cluttering the countertops and getting lost in the shuffle, it’s time to keep it organized! We’ve asked one of the best, most loved makeup artist in the city, Tamanna Rooz, to share with us her tips on decluttering. We’ve also rounded up 8 of the most innovative makeup storage ideas that will have your vanity looking tidier and much more functional. 40 JANUARY, 2018 - TULIP

- By Rabica Zulfiqar

How to declutter your makeup collection? Divide everything into different categories. Separate your collection into Lips, Face and Eyes. For lips; lip liner, liquid, matte & glass lipstick. For face; foundation, concealer, blushes, bronzer, highlighters, etc. For eyes; liner, eye pencils, eyeshadows, mascara, and so on. After this, get rid of the expired products. Here is the product expiration period list, after which you should dispose of the product. Eyeliner: 6 months to 1 year Mascara: 3 – 6 months Blush, eyeshadow and other powder cosmetics: 1 -2 years Foundation: 6 months to 1 year Lipstick: 1 year 1. It is advisable to do away with the cosmetics within the time period specified above. However, since we do spend a lot of money on them, sometimes the decision to throw them away can be discretionary. You may want to check for changed color, texture or foul smells. If that is the case, then it’s time to let them go. 2. Now get rid of the products you think won’t work for you; the shade/ colour doesn’t suit you or you just don’t like it and don’t want to use it any further. Sometimes, it’s hard to let go of a product you’ve spent a lot of money on. You keep telling yourself that you’ll find a way to use it or make it work, but you never do. Now is the time to get rid of it. You can pass on products which are in a good condition but don’t work for you. It might work for someone else, maybe a sister or a friend.

3. Create a “maybe pile” and decide which ones are similar and try some products again on your face and if you like it put it back in your collection or it’s giveaway time! 4. Constantly rotate your makeup. 5. Once you’re done with decluttering, throw away the expired products; don’t give them to someone else. Since they’ve expired, they may cause skin irritation or infection. If you follow these steps, you won’t keep on stacking up your makeup drawer.

What’s in trend for 2018? When it comes to makeup trends for 2018, it boils down to glossy textures. “Sexy shine”, is the next generation of highlight – it’s not just a highlight, it’s glossy. Do you remember the mass madness for fuchsia, red and all the pink shades? Now lilac has become the main shade; be it makeup, clothes or nails. Lips are going to be majorly nudes. In hair, it’s all about keeping it simple and chic. Flat, sleek hair with braids — lots of braids, are in. This season, logo manicure is here to stay. Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, Lagerfeld, all the top brands are on your hands, in the figurative sense of the word. It’s the year of frills, soft pastels, and asymmetric cuts. There are going to be a lot of off shoulder dresses to enhance the sensual and glamorous feminine side. Your favourite cosmetic product. Bumble and Bumble Thickening Dryspun finish.

OH LOOK

Today, everyone understands the importance and need of being fashionable. Be it for getting a write swipe on Tinder or a new Facebook profile picture or to nail your job interview. And men are the last people we all know to shop for themselves, they repeat clothes rather than buy new ones. There could be several reasons as to why men don’t shop; their schedules and commitments, budget constraints, the crowded malls or sheer laziness. Enter ‘Oh Look’. As quoted by Arshad (founder)- “During our work days, both Armaan and I realized that appearance of a person was as important. Looking fashionable, smart and dapper was not just a need for parties or celebrations, but had become a need of every single day of life. However, it involved a lot of effort over shopping, washing, ironing and choosing right clothes. Apart from all the hard work, being fashionable meant splurging money, given the rise in prices of fashion. It was then we were reminded of the time, when Armaan and I used to exchange our clothes being the same height, being brothers. This gave us a lot of choice and variety. We decided to use the same logic and offer people with a humongous wardrobe. We launched our service in Beta mode on Sep16 in Hyderabad with an aim to test the product, while the technology was being built and partnerships were being created. During the first two months of the beta phase, we received an overwhelming number of orders, which forced us to halt taking orders further. We made our service exclusive to those with an invite from an existing user. The founders, Arshad Azad and Armaan Azaad are brothers who are joined by their close friend Veera Shekar. Months from the launch, after a lot of hunts, we found our CTO, Sai Santosh. All of us have immense interests towards innovation, creativity and arts. They are thus bringing most updated fashion right to the doorstep of the consumer. For lesser than what they spend on clothes each year, they allow them the opportunity of experimenting with a new style every single day of their life. Choosing clothes is not a cakewalk for everyone, they have taken that responsibility by not just sending users’ new clothes every day, but also ensuring they only receive such products that suit them. They further went a step ahead and also eliminated their concerns over washing and ironing clothes, hence becoming the one-point solution to men’s fashion. Belum Caves

I

If there is any place on land that matches the beauty and mystique of the depths of oceans, it has to be the magical world of caves. Exploring the often dark and unknown interiors of these fascinating natural formations is certainly as unforgettable an experience as diving into uncharted waters that reveal a myriad of other-worldly treasures The second longest cave in India, Belum Caves (3.5km) are in Kurnool district. The major attraction of this natural cave is its interior chambers, which has a lot of stalactites and stalagmites. Of the many chambers, Saptasvarala Guha or Musical chamber is delightful where the limestone formations make metallic sounds. These caves, which get their name from the Sanskrit word bilum (hole), were formed by the action of water flowing on limestone deposits over millions of years, forming stalactites, stalagmites, siphons, sink holes, and water galleries. The deepest point in the cave is called Pathalaganga where a perennial stream is found keeping the temperature inside cool. Slender and tapered passages require crawling to witness the wonderment. Belum Caves are among the must see tourist places near Hyderabad. Though these caves were known to the locals for thousands of years, the first official records that mention them are from 1884, by Robert Bruce Foote, a British geologist and archaeologist who conducted surveys for the Geological Survey of India. In the 1980s, Indian officials worked with a German expedition to explore and map the caves. The relics found in the caves dated back to around 4500 BC and showed that the caves had been inhabited by ancient Buddhist and Jain monks. In 1999, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation took over the caves for maintenance. They cleared the mud and debris inside, built pathways, provided illumination and sank ventilation shafts to make the caves accessible to the public. Distance from Hyderabad: 319km

For the Love of Books

It’s no secret that reading is an excellent pastime. You can imagine characters, places, scenes just the way you want them to be. Books allow your mind to be creative and they explain the thoughts going through a characters’ minds while performing an action which lets you connect with them better and immerse yourself deeper in the story. Hyderabad’s rich association with literature dates all the way back to the 15thCentury; when the Qutb Shahi Dynasty encouraged the growth of Deccani Urdu in poetry. Hyderabad, which is more famously known as the City of Nizams, owes its cultural heritage to the 150-yearlong rule of the Nizams. They brought Hyderabad to the centre stage of elegant and soulful arts, and literature and that legacy continues to shine till date. Hyderabad hasn’t let go of its roots, with the old and new parts of the city perfectly dovetailed to give any aspiring writer an overdose of inspiration. And for those who love to have their hands on an interesting piece of literature, sit back and read. We also spoke to two of the renowned authors who are from Hyderabad. Pearl Kolleri is a very ordinary, nondescript sort of person, hence very media shy but she also happens to be a global bestselling author and evangelist. She writes under the pen name PB Kolleri. Her mystery novels have hit the #1 spot on US, UK, Canadian and Australian book websites numerous times. The eBook versions have also been nominated for literary excellence on Kindle several times in different categories and countries. “I cannot take any credit for the sort of literary success that I have been graced with. I think that my work and consequent success has 48 JANUARY, 2018 - TULIP

been directed and guided by a far higher source than anything I could have possibly achieved on my own steam”. she says. What are some common traps for aspiring writers? The greatest trap for anyone – be it an aspiring writer, doctor, designer, chef or engineer, or anyone for that matter, is to aspire for exponential success by thinking that ‘we’ are the captains of our ships and the masters of our destiny and that it is by ‘our’ effort alone that success comes. There is a greater design and higher purpose to every life. If your life’s purpose is to be an author, you will find your steps guided accordingly towards writing. And you will find yourself astonished at your own success. My advice to fledgling writers is to be open to that higher guidance. We are all tools in hands that are far mightier than we can fathom. Ask for clarity. ‘Ask and you shall receive’. Have faith that your path will be shown to you clearly. It is only when we start walking in our life’s true purpose that genuine success can come in any field of endeavour. It’s important to have patience, sometimes it can take a while. Personally, my path became clearer much later rather than

sooner in life. How I wish it had been the other way round! Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly? It rather depends on the genre, I think. I can’t see how emotions would help someone publishing a book on software code or cloud computing for example. I’m guessing it would detract. Come to think of it even in fiction, a cool mind is far better. You know, people often have this image in their minds about authors being a romantic lot with their heads in the clouds. The truth is, most authors who have any true global presence or commercial success (that is; those who publish international bestsellers) are no different from global entrepreneurs. The international publishing industry is a massive labyrinth and to make any name for yourself at all, to even make a dent in it, you need to have a very good idea about branding and managing your books and maintaining an overall international web presence for your books. Writing a book is just 10% of the work involved in the entire publishing process. There are over a hundred steps before and post writing a book. For example, before you can even decide on a genre, you need to clearly identify your target audience, demographics and your target readership countries. Seen in that light, it’s not any different from running a business really. Hence, coming back to your question, being overly emotional in this field can have a negative impact and bog you down. Also, in any creative endeavour you will have critics – that’s guaranteed. If you are emotionally strung, it’s likely going to effect your creativity and take away from your productivity. I personally think it helps to be centred and have a cool and calm mind as an author. What’s your favourite book? That’s easy. Dante’s Divine Comedy has to be one of the finest books of prose ever written. And unless one is fluent in Italian, Mandelbaum’s translation of Dante’s Inferno is by far the finest version. Beats Longfellow’s and Musa’s or even Applebaum’s translation of Dante any day. The Painted Veil by Somerset Maugham comes a close second. An absolute favourite. Your favourite authors? Far too many to choose from but I have to say that for everyday sort of reading, Somerset Maugham, Alexander McCall Smith and P.G. Wodehouse take satire, human experience and humour respectively to an altogether different level. Absolutely brilliant, and Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie remain the undisputed czars of mystery till this day. Who is your inspiration? Definitely Somerset Maugham. What does literary success look like to you? A Mercedes and a healthy bank account. Just kidding, although I’ve been blessed with those too. As I mentioned, I think I’ve always been guided by a higher source in all that I’ve done in the literary field, and now as an evangelist, so I can hardly claim any credit for the success that I’ve been lavished with, despite my being painfully media shy. How long on average does it take you to write a book? The writing part takes only about 25 days, bearing in mind, that when I’m in writing mode, I manage with 2 hours of sleep daily and write

FEATURE

continuously for about 18 hours a day. The research into the historical details of the era and characters that I write about takes longer. Then there’s editing and formatting of course. On the whole, anywhere between 3 to 6 months. What genre are your books? Historical Murder Mysteries and Biblical Theology.

When did you decide to become a writer? When I was about ten years old but the spirit literally moved me to become a professional author in 2013.The entire process got ‘slightly’ delayed by 25 years because I was too blind and too caught up with my corporate career, ‘paying my bills ‘so to speak, to see my true calling. Once I got married, my husband took care of the bills; bless his heart, while I stayed at home and took care of our baby daughter and started writing books in my spare time. And to my astonishment, it turned out to be a very successful venture. But I could not have even begun my literary career without my family’s unconditional support. Why did you choose this route? I went within and asked for guidance and I was shown my calling. My life’s purpose. What is your favourite quote? “To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life.” - W. Somerset Maugham What advice would you give to aspiring fiction writers? Please, please, stick to storytelling if you’re just starting out. As the old joke goes, autobiographies are only interesting if you are Steve Jobs, Paramhansa Yogananda or Princess Diana. What do you think would make a good story? For mystery writing, I’d like to say something clichéd like atmosphere and the build-up but the truth is, that the best mysteries are the ones that make you scratch your head in the end and say – ‘Now, why didn’t I catch that clue.’ The clues must be well hidden yet in retrospect, once the mystery is solved, they must be clearly visible to all. I usually hide the clues in the best possible place there is to hide anything – in plain sight. Mystery writing is so much fun because it’s like creating a clever crossword and a jigsaw puzzle in one. The theological works, on the other hand, are far more intense and spirit driven because they come from a higher source than one’s own limited consciousness. How can our readers discover more about you and you work? Most book websites, including Amazon have a detailed listing of all my books in different formats and editions. The first few books in the series are available in both print and digital versions in India. But I’m afraid the latest print books are available only in USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan among others. And although the latest print books are also available in India via Amazon, please bear in mind that since they are international imported editions, they are priced higher. The digital versions, on the other hand, are available at par in India. To find out more, you could just Google ‘PB Kolleri’ and you’ll find a host of international websites to choose from based on your country of residence for both digital and print books.

She is someone who gets joy out of any time spent with family, nature and all things beautiful. She celebrates life. “Whatever I do I do from my heart and the process becomes celebration. Thinking and saying positive is another ingredient that makes Sonika Shandilya. Just as I feel things to write I also feel music to dance.

What are some common traps for aspiring writers? Trying to imitate their favorite authors could fence them. Maybe trying to write something in which they themselves don’t believe in. Getting discouraged if they don’t find a publisher will hammer them down. Love for their writing and self confidence should help them nudge the hammer aside. My first novel ‘Joy all the may - Kids’ did not find a publisher but here I am beating the drum for the success of my second novel which has been published by Srishti Publications. Do you think someone could be a writer of they don’t feel emotions strongly? No one can be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly. You should be able to feel emotions through your eyes, ears, heart and skin if even a good line is to be written. I am referring to the emotions in both humans and nature. To describe a particular mood of the page, the writer should understand what the characters are feeling, whether it is night or day that could make them feel that way. And if it is night - is it the full moon if at all a day goes with the mood of the page then what day - windy, foggy, bright, rainy there would be many things which should be felt by the writer if the correct mood is to be given to the page. In every page this process will have to go on. The writer creates his own characters but some freedom should be gives to the characters as well. They will also guide the writer to some extent. To be guided correctly, the writer should be able to feel their emotions. What’s your favourite novel? A beautiful day whose breeze has lyrics of fun, its sunlight lights my mood, the thumping feel of my family around me giving a rocking effect to the beautiful day is my favourite novel. Yes I can read it every day. The words of this novel have to felt to be understood. The novel of each such day is my favourite. Cannot pick one. Your favourite Author? NATURE. I read it in flowers - so many different kinds of them, each blooming beautifully in words of the novel. The moon and the moonlight together produce words with a silvery halo which spread all through the novel. All the novels written by nature are bestsellers. Who is your inspiration? The love of my parents, brother, in-laws, husband and Sons is my 50 JANUARY, 2018 - TULIP

inspiration. What does literary success look like to you? It is one more thing to celebrate in the celebration of Life. My belief in myself and some people who believed in me have been proved right. I had anyway planned to keep on Writing but now with this literary success I can make other people read what I write and make them believe what I believe in. How long on average does it take you to write a book? It takes around two and a half years to write a book. But if I get more discipline and regularity in my writing Schedule it can take two years. What genre are your books? My first book which is yet to find a publisher is a Realistic fiction and the one which is published is a Romance Novel. My third which I am half way through is also realistic fiction. But I plan to write mostly Romance. When did you decide to become a writer? When both my son’s went to school I was missing them. So, I started writing about them which became my first book Joy - all the way Kids. I always enjoyed writing descriptive answers while in MBA so always had a flair for writing. When I started writing ‘TINKLING OF THE BELL BEFORE IT RINGS’ I was sure I will find a publisher. Why did you choose their route? If the route has different Landscape, while walking when you imagine something and you find it just at the next turn. Beautiful Surprises greet you on the way. Pleasant MIRACLES bare themselves for you. The route to writing is this and much more. Do you still want me to tell you why I choose this route? What is your favourite quote? “The ageing of the grapes produces intoxicating wine just as long relationships become intoxicating and give a high” by Sonika Shandilya What advice would you give to aspiring writers? Words should come from the heart. Keep your motivation in the heart which will always be able to break the traps of ‘ if’s and buts’ laid by the mind. You need not fence yourself with any strict routine as creativity needs to flow with freedom. But yes the manuscript should not be kept waiting for too long as this will make you lose contact with the characters. If you don’t have a story, start with something and the characters can also guide you if you are totally involved with the Story. Stay with your characters all the time then they will hop on to the things around you telling you what to write e.g. in my book ‘TINKING OF THE BELL BEFORE IT RINGS’ I saw woolly clouds in the sky. Sakshi and Jai got engrossed in the clouds too. One of the chapter have them talking about the Clouds. One should not repeat adjectives. Words or sentences should never sound monotonous. Imagine in your mind and then make it flow into words. What do you think would make a good story? A good writing will make a good story. It is the skill of the author that makes the readers enjoy and feel the story. It is the power of narration that makes everything sound interesting. If a good story finds a bad writing, the story will get bored and sleep through the novel. How can our readers discover more about you and your work? Readers can discover me and my work by reading and enjoying my Novel ‘ TINKLING OF THE BELL BEFORE IT RINGS’. The book is available at all major book stores across India and at Amazon worldwide. It is available at metros, tier 2 cities, tier 3 cities, airport shops, metro stations. Readers can visit my Facebook page Author Sonika Shandilya.

Leaving You Mesmerized The Spa at Park Hyatt transports you to another world altogether. We had a fantastic experience ourselves! We were greeted warmly and while the room was getting ready, we were served a welcome juice made of tamarind and jaggery which serves as a great detox drink. Then we were escorted to the amazing spa room by the masseur where soft music was being played which helped us to calm our minds. We were given a foot cleanse with hot water, scrubbed with foot salt which helps in removing dirt and dead skin. All this was eventually followed by a deep tissue massage which involved strong strokes applied using good technique on every muscle of our bodies to feel light and help us relax the entire body. Then we took some steam and a nice long shower. We were taken to another room which had sofas to relax and had dry fruits, infused water, and other healthy snacks. We were left with a mesmerizing experience- the body felt light and the mind was calm. We definitely recommend a visit to the spa to all our readers. Ketogenic Diet: Yay or Nay? In a world like ours, where everybody wants to be size ‘zero’ and have a slim and fit body it isn’t tough to get swayed into diets that might not be your fit. Let’s dive in- crash course on the Ketogenic diet! Ketones are chemical compounds that are naturally produced by your body when the insulin levels in your body are low; in order to regulate them, the liver creates Ketones from the fat stores of your body. The rate of ketone production is dependent on the amount of protein and carbohydrates you consume. Here’s the catch: A ketogenic diet’s essential component is that fat should make up 60-80% of your total calorie intake, and protein should only comprise about 1015% and carbs at 5-7% However, with its perks be prepared to bid farewell (keep tissue paper handy) to everything that you love: potatoes, corn, squash, starchy vegetables, starchy fruits, milk, beans, rice, pasta and bread. Did a light bulb just pop up in your brain like a neon light? Can I have Ketone supplements? Nope, that ain’t possible. Yet. There are some things that make the transition easier: • Shun the empty carbs. Are the carbs giving you anything? Are they anything more than cheese fries? •

Find a spot that ties eating nothing and just inhaling food. Don’t deprive yourself of fat. Eat healthy fats like fatty meats: salmons, sardines, mackerel and roast them in oils that are fatty like olive oil, canola or avocado oil.

Keep the green, leafy vegetables at the top of your list! Greens like Swiss chard, Kale, Bok Choy, Collard greens, Mizuna, Morning glory leaves, Arugula, Moringa and Watercress are some great options that will keep you satisfied!

However, there are things that you should look out for when you are on this diet. Nagging headaches and acid refluxes are occasional so make sure you keep a paracetamol or alkaline base medicine close by. You may occasionally feel low and depressed when your dopamine levels drop, on days like those take a break, have a nap and have yourself a good cup of tea (or coffee if that’s your cup of tea). Let’s get some expert advice from one of the best nutritionists in the city!

Dr. Lakshmi Kilaru, a trained nutritionist who currently owns two consulting offices, has a PhD in Food Technology and Nutrition from the University of Georgia. Knowledgeable and well informed, she is on the road to achieving wonders in the field of nutrition. Alongside her two offices, she also consults at F45 gym. What is the ketogenic diet? The keto — short for ketogenic — diet is a low-carb diet, in which the body produces ketones in the liver to use as energy instead of carbohydrates. Like other low-carb, high-fat diets, keto draws people in with its promised weight-loss results. The ketogenic diet, in reality, is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that in medicine is primarily used to treat epilepsy (Seizures) in children. The principle involved here:- the diet forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Normally, the carbohydrates in the food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is important in fuelling brain function. However, if there is very little carbohydrate in the diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies pass into the brain and replace glucose as an energy source. An 56 JANUARY, 2018 - TULIP

elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood, a state is known as ketosis, leads to a reduction in the frequency of epileptic seizures.

FITNESS

eat an excess of fatty foods — and not the good kind of fat. Excess of saturation from fat affects the heart, brain, diabetes risk, ageing, and disease prevention. Slowed metabolism-The main reason a ketogenic diet is not good for weight loss is that it mimics starvation. In starvation mode, your body craves for every calorie. In addition to a limited diet, bad mood, and missing carbs, it completely slows your metabolism. The balloon effect-Even worse, once you go back to your normal diet you will balloon up. That body will not be able to normally process your carbohydrates and will lead to excess weight gain.

How does the keto diet work? In our normal functioning state, human bodies are sugar-driven where we eat carbohydrates, that are broken down into glucose, and glucose usually becomes energy, or it’s stored as glycogen in liver and muscle tissue. In the absence of circulating blood sugar from food, we start breaking down stored fat into molecules called ketone bodies (the process is called ketosis). Once you reach ketosis, most cells will use ketone bodies to generate energy until we start eating carbohydrates again. The shift, from using circulating glucose to breaking down stored fat as a source of energy, usually happens over two to four days of eating fewer than 20 to 50 grams of carbohydrates per day. If there is a diet deviation it takes another 4 to 5 days for the ketosis to kick in. The workload on the pancreas is majorly reduced and the liver is overworking where fats from the foods are converted to fatty acids and ketones which are the primary source of energy. The liver becomes the sole provider of energy for all the organs.

Is the ketogenic diet bad in the long term? Ketogenic diet can be detrimental to health if it is used for a long term since there is a restriction of carbohydrates that is a basic fuel for the body and it is rich in proteins and fats. It typically includes plenty of meats, eggs, processed meats, sausages, cheeses, fish, nuts, butter, oils(coconut), and some fibrous vegetables. Because it is so restrictive, it is really hard to follow over the long run. Carbohydrates normally account for at least 50% of the typical diet according to the food pyramid. What can be consumed during the course of the diet? The Foods included in Keto Diet. Seafood, Meat and chicken, Cheese, Low carb vegetables(spinach, zucchini), Avocado, Eggs, Yoghurt/Curd, Olive oil, Nuts and seeds, Berries, Butter and cream, Olives, Unsweetened coffee, Ghee, Coconut oil (It contains medium triglycerides (MCTs) are taken up directly by the liver and converted into ketones or used as a rapid source of energy. coconut oil’s mix of MCTs and lauric acid may promote a sustained level of ketosis). Please follow this diet if needed with an approval from a medical doctor and a nutritionist and not from unauthorized personnel in the fitness industry since it may lead to health complications in the future.

Do the cons outweigh the pros? Weight loss is the primary reason to use the Ketogenic diet these days. Previous research shows good evidence of a faster weight loss when patients go on a ketogenic or very low carbohydrate diet compared to participants on a more traditional low-fat diet. However, that difference in weight loss seems to disappear over time. A ketogenic diet also has been shown to improve blood sugar control for patients with Type 2 diabetes, at least in the short term. Its effect on cholesterol is still debatable. A few studies have shown that some patients have an increase in cholesterol levels in the beginning and gradual reduction a few months later. However, there is no long-term research analyzing its effects over time on diabetes and high cholesterol. Although there is initial weight loss after the body enters Ketosis, there are many side effects. What are the side effects of the Ketogenic diet? Keto breath- Any excess ketones (since they are volatile in nature) exit the body via urine and breath. Those on a keto diet experience a characteristically sweet “keto breath” that is not very pleasant. Weak bones and stress fractures- Ketones are acidic, and one of their jobs is to pull phosphorous and calcium out of your bones. When ketones are your sole source of energy, you have a buildup, and thus, you deplete your phosphorous and calcium. This can lead to stress fractures and bone problems. Constipation- Since carbohydrates are the main source of fibre, avoiding carbohydrates with excess protein and fat will lead to chronic constipation. Headaches, bad mood, and bad memory- Since carbs are the optimal energy source for the brain, the keto diet starves your brain of fuel. “This leads to brain fog, headache, fatigue, moodiness, and possible anxiety. Increased risk of disease- The ketogenic diet encourages you to

An eye for the future After reading numerous articles on people showing their forceful patriotism, boasting about how great India is and how religiously they stand up when the national anthem plays in the movie theatres, we were blasé to the whole thing. Of course, all of us are proud of our country and love it deeply, but there are times when we wish things were a little different and there is absolutely nothing wrong in wanting to change something for the better. Whether it’s the big issues like finer laws for the protection of women or something like the bad roads and godforsaken drainage systems. So, instead of asking people why they love their motherland so much, who they’re planning to vote for or if they’re going to hoist flags this Republic Day, we’ve asked them to share with us what changes and developments they would like to see in India in the coming years! - By Rabica Zulfiqar

Aamer Javeed, All India Secretary of the National student’s union of India.

I would like to see India as a land of opportunity for youngsters at a global level, where people aspire to come from various parts of the world. For India’s development, we need to get rid of the havoc of divisive politics. We need governance that goes beyond polarising the country when the energies of the entire population can be otherwise constructively utilized for nation building. The population needs to be galvanised towards action for better human rights, upliftment of women, eradication of illiteracy and other mandates that are highlighted in our nation’s constitution. People should stop continuously toying with irrelevant issues like “Ghar Wapsi”, “Love Jihad”, “Gau Raksha”, “Triple Talaq” etc. There are far more pertinent issues the nation is facing. True all around development can be achieved when the collective authority in power works towards relevant issues. India is no more seen as the best destination and safe haven for investments but I want to see my country in the top economies of the world. I dream of an India that has recovered from the ill-conceived and awfully bad follow up of the demonization policy, from which the economy has still not recovered, even after more than a year. We also need a better foreign policy. A true change towards development can’t be achieved without addressing the issues plaguing the nation such as inflation, the curbing of black money and the curbing of corruption. The government and masses collectively should work towards policies that curb these epidemics. I want to see an India which lives in harmony with love, affection and compassion; where there are no ill effects of society and hatred amongst the citizens. Where every citizen stands by each other through the good and the bad, with no barriers of caste, creed and religion.

India is the world’s largest, oldest, continuous civilization and is the world’s largest democracy. After 70 years of independence and almost 67 years of being a republic country, there are still a few changes that need to take place as soon as possible. There needs to be a basic minimum educational qualification requirement for our elected policymakers, improvising the judiciary system with fast-track courts, equal opportunity to every child for basic and free education, and affordable medical expenses for all the citizens. Evils such as female infanticide and child marriage need to vanish from our society, discrimination based on caste, creed, and colour should be eradicated, public property should not be harmed in any situation whatsoever, and Indians must develop a zero tolerance towards wastage of food. Women empowerment is of utmost importance currently; after all women makes up 48% of the total population! We comprise 18% of the world’s population and if each one decides to play their part and play it right, we could transform India in the coming years!!

Kiran Singh, Student I hope to see the following changes and developments in the country in the coming years. l Abolish based quota. Cleaner and better roads; the potholes need to be taken care of.

l

Investments for startups.

l

Free education till high school by the government and low-cost education.

l

Faster working of judiciary in India

l

Birth control adoption policies (like China adopted the 1 child policy)

l

Women empowerment and safety for women

l

More tax benefits and higher rate of interest for older people

l

Salwa Mirza, ER doctor

Traffic Control – Congestion of roads due to vehicular traffic has become a chronic problem with practically no solution! There need to be better rules and regulations to help curb this issue. Family Planning – India is already overpopulated and if this issue is not taken into control at the earliest, it could pose a huge threat to the country. Corruption – Prevention and eradication of corruption is an absolute requirement for a better life. Equality and Safety – The government needs to encourage gender equality and have strict laws for women’s safety.

Finally, as we already know, complete car spa is a combination of interior and exterior car spa. It is a combo that can save you money and at the same, bring a complete makeover for your car. The primary services that car spas provide are soft cloth wash, underbody wash, towel dry, interior vacuuming, interior window cleaning, dash dusting tyre dressing, triple foam polish, clear coat protectant, choice of fragrance, center console cleaning, etc. Here is a clear briefing:

Pawan Kalyan’s Agnyaathavaasi Rajamouli’s Baahubali record

breaks

Power Star Pawan Kalyan’s upcoming movie Agnyaathavaasi has started to crush records already. The film created a record for being the first movie to release in most foreign theatres and now it has added one more record in its kitty. The makers released the teaser, which wreaked havoc on social media. Even before the teaser release, the hashtag #Agnyaathavaasiteaserday stood at fourth in the national trends. After the release, it became the teaser most liked in a day’s time. It has crossed 7 million views on Youtube and bagged 440k likes; something which SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali could not. The film is scheduled to hit the theatres on 10th January 2018 on the occasion of Sankranthi.

a takes Chandika Hathurusingh h charge as Sri Lanka coac Chandika Hathurusingha took charge as Sri Lanka cricket coach on Wednesday, looking to replicate the success he found with Bangladesh. Sri Lanka has been without a coach since Graham Ford resigned six months ago. Fielding coach Nick Pothas had been the interim coach since then. Sri Lanka Cricket authorities hope Hathurusingha’s arrival will change the national team’s fortunes after a string of losses in recent months. “My plans with Bangladesh, New South Wales, Sri Lanka A and Moors have all been successful. I will be implementing a similar plan,” Hathurusinghe told reporters. “This team has the potential to go two or three steps higher if we go along with a plan.”

Sunny Leone has been roped in an upcoming movie, in which she will be seen playing real-life warrior princess, is expected to go on floors in February 2018. The name of the movie hasn’t been revealed yet. Sunny Leone’s demand shocked the producers of her South India film. She is believed to have quoted the amount, which is higher than what Anushka Shetty got for Baahubali series. Sunny Leone has demanded Rs 2.5 Cr (excluding tax) as her salary and including tax, the remuneration roughly comes around Rs 3.25 Cr. This is higher than Anushka’s, who received Rs 2.5 Cr each for the two-part Baahubali series. This is Sunny’s first full-fledged South Indian film and she is already beating the top Tollywood actresses!

Saina Nehwal commends P.V. Sindhu

Saina Nehwal was awed by Akane Yamaguchi’s performance against PV Sindhu in the final of the Dubai World Super Series Finals where the Japanese came from behind to beat Sindhu and clinch the gold. Sindhu lost 21-15, 12-21, 19-21 to Yamaguchi in the final in Dubai after battling for an hour and 34 minutes that tested all her fitness and skills. “First of all it is difficult to reach the finals itself and she (Sindhu) has done that time and again. I think the training time she had before the Rio Olympics is giving her the push and confidence to play tough games. Also, she is fit enough to play back-to-back against these top girls.” Saina attributed her Nationals victory to her good movement on the court but accepted that had the match gone to the third game, the result might have been different. “I beat Sindhu on that day. It was good and I was moving well. But I was also tired and my stamina was finished in the second set. If it would have gone to the third set, I think I could have hardly lasted,” Saina said. “She (Sindhu) has more stamina than me and she is fitter than me. I would say I only won because I was moving well and my smashes were coming hard. She gave a good fight in the second set and it was close. I could see my fitness was again a problem at that time but I can only improve my fitness with more time and that is the issue at the moment.” TULIP - JANUARY, 2018 69

MOVIES Movie Reviews

Jumanji: Welcome to the jungle Its been 23 years since Robin Williams and Bonnie Hunt first sat down and pulled out a mysterious board game called Jumanji. However in Jumamji: Welcome to the Jungle, the story starts 10 years after the events of the first flim, and the board game is found washed up on a beach by Alex Vreeke (played by Mason Guccione). He takes it home and dusts it off and opens it up, but as with most modern teens, his only comment is “who plays board games?”. The movie is no drama; in fact it’s the kind of movie that we could rather use at the moment. Its four teens who find themselves caught in entirely alien bodies inside of a video game. Most of the gamer tropes are to be found, from multiple lives to NPCs who can only repeatedly spout their handful of Pre-programmed responses. Various characters have abilities that the others can’t duplicate. There’s a certain amount of irony involved in the film, with this being the second film in a row in which Johnson has a quest which involves returing a green rock to its place of origin. And following in William’ footsteps, Dwayne Johnson also just came off of being lead in a Disney animated film. Go in to have fun. There is enough creative applications of gamer logic, even though b the end the film there’s pretty solid idea of how things are going to end up. Tiger Zinda Hai Tiger Zinda Hai Tiger Zinda Hai is based on the 2014 abduction of Indian nurses by ISIS but the only specks of authencity to expect in the Alo Abbas Zafar film are the correct names of the geographical locations – Mosul, Tikrit – recreated in Morocco and Abu Dhabi, perhaps. Everything else defies reality and logic, unabashedly so. Just about anything goes in the name of Bhai. The film is a far-fetched, brazen and unapologetic paean to the stardom of Salman Khan, showcasing him as the ultimate action hero. It’s not like action saves this action film. Tiger’s action scenes feature close-shots, fast edits or slow motion, with him holding guns or showing off his naked torso, kind of felt like John Rambo’s action scene. At one point the the film is a huge mess it unleashes Sallu’s bhaigiri plays on patriotism and tricolour jingoism and also aims to be a well-meaning Indo-Pak peace initiative, bringing RAW and ISI together on a joint mission. Katrina Kaif though is a revelation. She is lithe, light on her feet when she lands and can form unimaginable contours on screen when she moves. Her action scenes are more fun, wholesome and she gets a compact introduction that is better than Salman Khan’s. This movie is a onetime watch.

MCA: Middle Class Abbayi Nani’s brother and his friends are his world. But he shares love-hate relationship with his sister-inlaw Jyothi. What happens when Shiva threatens his family is what ‘MCA’ is all about. Nani is good enough in his role as the middleclass man who values the relationships he forms. He is a delight to watch on screen and does his best with the flat role he’s offered. Sai Pallavi is beautiful and dances like a dream, but has yet again been handed the short end of rope. It is maybe only Bhumika, whom the audience have seen after a long time, who will be memorable in her role as the straightforward and honest RTO officer. Naresh, Rajeev Kanakala, Vennela Kishore and Priyadarshini have their key roles in the film, they hardly get any screen-time because this is a Nani and Bhumika show through. The cinematography of the film is good enough, while the songs fail to make an impression. It is the BGM that is the star of the show, going in sync with the proceedings on-screen and entertaining the audience. The first of the film is entertaining while the second half of the film gets a bit draggy at parts. MCA is good enough for a one-time watch, especially if you’re a Nani or a sucker for family dramas.

BOOKS The Chemist

by Stephenie Meyer Stephanie Meyer, known from her best-selling Twilight series, brings a completely different, well-plotted story that’s unlike anything she has done before. Readers will be surprised from start to finish as they race through this page-turner. On the run, a former U.S. government employee — in a field that’s so secret it doesn’t even have a name — can’t stay in the same place or use the same name too long. After considering her a threat, the U.S. agency needs her dead. To shed the target off her back, she is offered a way out by a former handler. However, it requires her to carry out one last job for her former employers that will risk her own life. A professional torturer on the run from her employers falls in with sexy twin brothers.

Thanks, Obama: My Hopey, Changey White House Years by David Litt

Remember when Presidents spoke in complete sentences instead of unhinged tweets? Former Obama speechwriter David Litt reflects on a time when fact- checking was an integral part of White House protocol, climate change was acknowledged as a real thing, and presidents not only turned into the White House Correspondents’ Dinners-they also performed comic skits with Keegan-Michael Key. In this candid memoir, Litt brings us inside Obama world, recalling the electrifying moment he discovered Obama and how he arrived at the White House at 24 years-old (one of the youngest White House speechwriters in history) to eventually become Obama’s go-to comedy writer. We get an inside look into politics as it was under the former administration, and we discover why Litt believes the legacy of Barack Obama will prevail long after the age of Donald Trump.

The Windfall by Diksha Basu

This cross-cultural comedy of manners set between India and America is all about the complex (and very humorous) antics of a family whose patriarch, Mr. Jha, is intent on moving up in the world. He’s glad to have left behind the petty goings-on of their previous community in New Delhi- whisperings about who might have stolen the attractive young widow’s yoga pants are exactly the type of nonsense he’s hoping to avoid in their posh new neighborhood. Though money doesn’t necessarily buy the Jha’s happiness, it delivers readers plenty of laughs and more. Soon it’ll come to the screen because Paramount and Anonymous Content (Known for likes of The Knick & True Detective) are developing it into a TV series.
