Cafes are the new galleries!

WHATS HAPPENING

A solo exhibition of Maredu Ramu’s works at Beyond Coffee, Jubilee Hills is taking place. He has chosen a Cafe and not a gallery because people would come to a cafe and spend more time compared to a gallery and this will also be a part of their memory. The abstract landscapes by him are placed on the walls of the cafe. One of this works is a landscape of Madhapur where he resides and has seen the changes made in his surroundings. His art works do not have any story or a message to covey. If we say Telangana art, one can describe people talking about their culture. He paints on situations and he’s inspired by the happenings around him. Venue: Road No. 36, Jawahar Colony, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad.

Hall of Arts at IIIT

The minute you stroll into IIIT Hyderabad, you’ll be encompassed by thick greenery and benches hand painted by their students. Going from insignificant handiwork to far-reaching divider paintings, the campus portrays different skill styles that incorporate pictures, typography, dynamic art, and popular culture references. What began as a network action to paint walls in the course of a school fest prompted a movement where students wanted to paint the walls to leave an impact on their school. Soon then, an Art Society was framed by the students who volunteered to lead the idea of painting walls. This touched off an enthusiasm for an ever-increasing number of students to participate in improving the campus. The general public gets an abundant help from SLC {Student Life Committee} framed by the administration of the college, which likewise effectively supported the required toolkits. Venue: Near DLF Building, Gachibowli, Hyderabad

Tulip A compilation of all things we are obsessing over this month

Young Sheldon

Young Sheldon, the prequel takes The Big Bang Theory’s most popular character, Sheldon Cooper, back to his boyhood. Set in 1989 Texas, the series begins with Sheldon (played by nine-year-old Iain Armitage) starting high-school where, due to his precocious intelligence, he sits in the same class as his bullying older brother George (Montana Jordan). He also has a twin sister, Missy (Raegan Revord), who’s more interested in combing hair than unlocking the secrets of the universe. The role of his mother, Mary, is played by Zoe Perry, Meemaw, by Annie Potts and George Sr. by Lance Barber. Sheldon’s internal monologues are supplied by The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons. Young Sheldon is not just funny and absolutely entertaining but it also taps into the current nostalgia for all things 1980s. Watch: Amazon Prime

Jordan

Jordan has delighted visitors for centuries with its World Heritage Sites, friendly towns and inspiring desert landscapes. Petra, the ancient Nabataean city locked in the heart of Jordan’s sandstone escarpments, is the jewel in the crown of the country’s many antiquities. Take a ride through Wadi Rum at sunset, and it’s easy to see why TE Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) was so drawn to this land of weathered sandstone and reddened dunes. Minimal planning and only a modest budget are required for an adventure.

It has become a trend to click a million pictures of food before finally getting to eat it. Stop clicking and start eating. Let’s start a trend where nobody uses the phone when sitting together for a meal.

Over a Cappuccino with

Lakshmi Nambiar

She has three different identities that keep her on her toes and utilize the left and right sides of her brain. Lakshmi Nambiar is a gallerist who runs Shrishti Art Gallery (one of the oldest galleries in Hyderabad) and is a partner with Anthill Ventures, which invests in start-ups and helps them scale and finally and most importantly, she’s a mother to Tamaara, her 6.5-year-old daughter. After completing her MBA from the US, Lakshmi joined the world of investment banking where she helped companies merge and acquire and raise private equity. However, she gave up banking after a decade of experience as she inherited Shrishti Art Gallery from her mother who unfortunately passed away four years back.

What inspired you to start an art gallery? Is it something you’ve always wanted to do? My mother, the late Remani Nambiar started Shrishti Art gallery in 2002 to provide a platform for upcoming artists to showcase their art. I always knew at the back of my head that my true passion was to pursue the arts and run Shrishti. However, I was going up the corporate ladder and became a partner for an investment bank leading their India practice. Also, Investment banking is one of the highest paying jobs in finance. My mother felt that I should continue with my career for another 5 years and then come into Shrishti. However, things changed 20 JULY, 2018 - TULIP

when my mother was diagnosed with cancer and she passed away in January 2014. She left behind a vacuum not only in Shrishti but in the art community in Hyderabad as she was loved dearly. After her passing, I felt a strong inner need and a calling to pursue the arts and run Shrishti with the understanding that running a gallery is all about passion and not about making money. Indian contemporary art is my passion and that has helped me take the mantle of Shrishti forward. Tell us about Shrishti Art Gallery. Shrishti Art is one of the oldest galleries in Hyderabad showcasing

Indian contemporary art. We just celebrated our 16th year anniversary with an exhibition that explored the spiritual quotient in Art. Since inception, we have mounted more than 200 exhibitions of established as well as next-generation artists in varied forms of contemporary art in all mediums. This year we are working on a large art project where we will be exhibiting the works of 51 women artists who are creating artworks that will showcase women role models. These role models are 51 inspirational women in India who have pioneered or left an impact in their respective fields. The artworks will cater to children so that we can raise awareness among kids about women role models. How do you manage your work and personal life? Maintaining a good work-life balance is quite an endeavour. This was a daunting task especially when I was a banker as it involved long work hours. So early on itself, I started compartmentalising each activity. When I’m at work, I don’t worry about what happens at home and when I am at home I limit the work that I do. We’re lucky to be in India, where we have families and help coming to our

rescue if we need assistance. Having a supportive husband who respects your career and independence is a huge plus. Also, I am very aware that I want to enjoy the joys of living including travelling, a social life, love, family and all the small things that make our living delightful. What do you do in your leisure time? I have an active social life. I hang out with my friends and I travel with my husband and daughter frequently to see different cultures and lifestyles and enjoy their cuisine. What advice would you give to working moms? Working moms always feel a guilt for the time they spend away from their child. My advice is that replace that guilt with a self-worth. You are setting an example for your child of being independent, satisfied and fulfilled. Also, small things to remember is that when you connect back with your child after work spend 15 minutes just with them without speaking about work or even stuff to do around the house. It truly helps. Unplug from the phone and live in the present.

Rapid Fire Who do you admire the most? I admire my mom the most. She grew up in a small village in Kerala. But she has accomplished a lot whether it is setting up Ikebana International in Hyderabad and of course setting up a well-reputed gallery in the country Are you a morning or a night person? I am a night person. I can stay up quite late … but waking up early in the morning is a challenging task. If you could get yourself anything, what would you get? I would want to travel for the next ten years without a care. Are you a cat or a dog person? I am more of a dog person. I have a beagle named Django and we are adopting another beagle called Axl. What was your favourite book growing up? Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger. What have you done that you are most proud of? I wanted to scale Shrishti to new heights. And I think I’m on the right track to achieve that. I did one of the largest exhibitions of three-dimensional artworks in India called inBox. I had more than 83 artworks and I opened up the exhibition in an old abandoned hundred-year-old palace called the Hill Fort Palace in the heart of the city. If you were a superhero what would your powers be? I want to be a genie where I can grant any wish I want.

But a piece of paper cannot define us, having knowledge is also equally important. Living in a world where technology is accessed by anyone and smart enough to create wonders is what we are talking about. Have you ever thought what can a poor farmer’s son at the age of 14 with nothing but just Rs. 750 and a strong will to give something to 784 crore people in this world of 238 countries do? He has touched a billion lives, continues to travel on that path and has become a successful entrepreneur. Clothes Make The Man

LIFESTYLE

Paresh Lamba started his career training as a shoe designer and somewhere along the way clothes got his fancy and he started off designing clothes for men in 1990. “It was a challenge at that time because not too many, in fact, hardly any men’s designers were present in the country. It’s that saying of “viewing the glass as either half empty or half full.” And for me, it was completely an empty glass that I felt could be filled up as time went by and as men became more conscious about their appearance and clothing. I guess I was right looking at the brand since then”, he says. What line of clothing do you specialize in? I specialize in clothes for men. Right from formal bespoke suits and wedding attire to the casual fun Friday dressing and even to the uberchic in loungewear and club wear. What inspires your designs? For me, being a designer is more about getting into the mind of the client and giving him something he will feel most comfortable in. My ultimate aim is not about ranking in the millions, it is in making my client 100 per cent happy with my clothes. And for someone who has been in the fashion scene for twenty plus years, I continue to stay charged. I have to have passion for and focus in what I do. The moment the passion goes away, I will stop designing. It feels great to design for celebrities- right from captains of the industry to actors to politicians. While I consider every client of mine a celebrity, designing for the who’s who gives me a kick; it is more like an adrenaline shot for the work I do. Inspiration can come from anywhere. You just have to be aware of your surrounding at all times.

for Spring Summer 2018. This season is all about colours, silhouettes, prints and drapes. Trends which people should ditch or avoid are:- Velcro shoes - Silly statement t-shirts - Male rompers -Wearing Dungarees What styling tips would you like to give for this monsoon? Since monsoon is a weather which is warm and wet, I would suggest

Did you always want to get into the fashion industry? Yes and no. No, because I had no clue that there was an existence of fashion industry when I was growing up because I come from a home where no one knew anything about business. Yes, because as I grew up I began to imbibe a sense of style and felt that I had to do something in fashion. Since one of my cousins was in the shoe industry and was encouraging me to join the industry, I first thought of being a shoe designer. But obviously, destiny had other plans and here I am. What challenges did you face when you first started out? The biggest challenge was to explain to people that there is an occupation called “Men’s Designer”, because every time I actually introduced myself, the question asked was, “why would men need designers?’’. It was all about women back then and it was a difficult path to choose. How do you keep up with the everchanging trends? By being informed, by visiting trade and business seminars and exhibitions, visiting various fashion weeks not only in India but also in various fashion capitals of the world like Paris, London, Milan etc. What are your current favourite fashion trends and which ones should people ditch? Currently, my favourite fashion trend is the amalgamation of colours into prints

people wear light cotton/ linen, breathable fabrics that also dry faster if you get drenched. You should opt for lighter pastel shades. Get yourself some trendy shrugs with hoodies that protect you from rain and look stylish at the same time. You can also invest in lightweight windcheaters which are easy to store and carry. If you are old school and like to carry an umbrella then you must invest in umbrellas with bright neon colours and extravagant prints on them.

The Hole in the Wall Cafe

CUISINE

A place that Hyderabad really needed, Hole in the wall is an all-day breakfast hub with other specialities that are served throughout the day. Their menu includes burgers, a great variety of omelettes (they had us at that), toasts, sandwiches and smoothies. The cafe has a really cute and cosy setting where you can swing and hang out with your friends, with hints of teal here and there. Coming to the food, we tried the Meaty chicken burger which had beef with fried egg, a perfect combination of everything it needed to have. Strips of crispy bacon, hint of egg, cheese and sauces. The French toast will blow your mind and tongue in the real sense. It’s not like a regular one actually, a little sweet, dusted with sugar and topped with its signature maple syrup. If you look for some traditional American breakfast, choose the chicken hole 9 yards hash that is a blockbuster of all the breakfast dishes here. Chicken ham, hash, salami and sausages, served with fried eggs and brown bread with butter. We won’t give it away now, you have to go and try it on your own. If you want something refreshing, try the Cherry Coke Float, it has a dollop of jam and a little ice-cream to your Coca-Cola, making it interesting. They have

crazy smoothies, shakes like peanut butter jelly shake which is due for the next visit. If you are looking for some eggless sides, beans on toast, hash, mashed potatoes, French fries and lots. The Hole in the wall is a true delight in every sense. Address: 8-2-293/82/A/1355/F, Rd Number 45, Nandagiri Hills, Jubilee Hills. Ph: +91 93982 62097

COVER STORY

Daksha Nagarkar who is an actress can mesmerise you with her beautiful eyes. She is primarily known for South Indian films. She has worked with directors like Teja and Kotapati Sreenu. She has done 2 movies – Ak Rao in 2014 and Hora Hori in 2015. After spending a wonderful time with her during the photo shoot we wanted to know more about this charming lady and asked her a few questions. What made you get into the acting field? “There was this beauty pageant called Yamaha Ray where they were looking for their brand ambassador. That’s when I participated in the contest and I fortunately won the contest. So that’s how I had entered the glamour world. Before that I that I was never really interested in modeling but I always liked acting and wanted to become an actress, this Eventually I ended up giving audition for a Telugu and luckily I got into that movie. Have you done theater earlier? No, I’ve never done theater before but I think I’ve always had this thing when I would always imitate actresses especially Kareena Kapoor and this has helped me a lot in my career. The first movie I got into was so quick, it happened just like that. I think it because my mimicry skills really helped me bag the role. What do you prefer wearing on a rainy day? As I used to stay in Mumbai initially, rainy days were really hectic so I don’t really go out much but if it’s a case where I need to go out at any cost then I usually prefer to wear something really casual and which will get dry really fast on my body like thin fabrics and usually light colors. Coming to footwear, I prefer wearing slippers which are waterproof and if not waterproof something made out of plastic fiber. I really can’t imagine myself wearing my Aldos and running around on a rainy day. I don’t prefer accessorizing myself too much on a rainy day because it makes me feel more messy and heavy. I am one of those people who likes to keep their hair left open and free most of the time and I don’t think I would tie a pony tail on a rainy day and it is also bad to tie your hair when it’s wet. In case if I know that probably the weather is changing I feel that my hair might just get wet I just leave it open. So that’s my thing and how I usually keep my attire in monsoon season.

Raincoat or Umbrella? I will completely go for a raincoat because when we were in school all of us were excited about monsoon so that we could wear our favorite raincoats and play in the water and jump on water puddles. I think an umbrella is too much effort to hold and I think I would any day choose raincoat. What do like to eat and drink on a rainy day? I am more of a coffee person so I would any day choose coffee over tea or chai at all, especially cold coffee. But if it’s like really cold then I love to drink black coffee water puddles. When it comes to eating I don’t really like fried food but I like to eat hot served food. I don’t like eating Maggie as well. I like to eat anything that is served hot like, hot brown bread sandwich or hot mashed potatoes. Actually I am not really a street food fan as well but yeah I don’t mind eating Vada Pav or a Bhel Puri. What do you like to do on a rainy day? I love chilling at my own place and ask my friends to come down to my place and spend time with them with homemade food. You know like the cold breeze and you’re at home feeling cozy and having fun. I think it’s much nicer when you’re at home. In case if it’s drizzling I would really love to go out because for me the drizzles are really fun and I enjoy them completely, don’t mind getting drenched as well but if it’s raining really bad then I prefer staying indoors. During a lovely weather which song strikes your repeat list? I really like old Hindi songs. I prefer listening to one of those Kishore Kumar and Rajesh Khanna’s songs are my all time favorite. Among the recent singers, I enjoy listening to Arijit Singh.

Splish splash with style FASHION

After slaying the sweaty summer, it’s time to slay in the rain. It is that the one word we hear during the summer and only get chills and cheer, it offers to unwind the heart and soul. It energizes us yet, in addition, helps us to remember the issues that we look amid the stormy days. On the other side, you must be worried and stressed over how the rainstorm will hose your style from the top to bottom— from frizzed up hair to your most loved shoes — these monsoon styles can give some assurance.

Rescue outfit

Even though its monsoon, if it’s not really a rainy day and if you’ve planned not to carry any coat or umbrella, a pair of shorts and a basic t-shirt with full sleeves could come to the rescue. Wearing vibrant colours can give you an eye catchy look which will be a stand out in the crowd.

P’s and Q’s

Full-length outfits are a total no-no – you would prefer not to stroll into your work environment with slush on your hemline. So avoid wearing full-length dresses this season. Go for knee length skirts, shorts or capris this season. Dodge denim – While denim is flexible and look awesome throughout the entire year, the issue with them is that once they get wet, they take ages to dry. The mystery behind incredible stormy season garments is to destroy garments that dry rapidly. Think cotton and nylon. Go for splendid happy prints – It is the season when the sun makes a periodic visit and the earth is sodden and bleak. So liven up your surroundings with garments in energetic hues and dazzling prints. Stay away from vigorously adorned outfits – Monsoons are tied in with giving your soul a chance to fly and substantial pieces of clothing essentially won’t let you do that. Go for light and fluidic textures. Truth be told, this is one season where we would propose going in for engineered materials too since they are anything but difficult to keep up – basically wash and wear.

Meenakshi Pamnani- @theshimmergirl Fashion Blogger Monsoon fashion according to me should be more fun colours because the weather is already gloomy. Neons are back so we could play with those colours. We could wear cigarette pants as they are very fancy and come up to the ankle preventing any dirt to get to it unlike other pants. We could go with a lot of skirts and shirt dresses and also of course get those boots out. We have a lot of nice options which are waterproof and stylish at the same time. And not to forget waterproof makeup :) 30 JULY, 2018 - TULIP

FASHION Tasneem M.T- @amanazi_._ Fashion Designer If there’s one thing that we know about monsoon, it’s that its gloomy and often threatens to take the fun out of fashion games. It’s better to avoid thick clothes like denim, thick cottons, cords in your wardrobe during monsoon season. Wearing light bright shirts or t-shirts and floral prints are a complete go – go. Also, leggies and skirts are good to wearing in monsoon. Our feet usually become more smelly and sweaty in monsoon and one must always take good care of them by choosing the right footwear. Usually, floaters and waterproof footwear are the best for this month as they dry up very quickly.

Nitha Shivapuram Designer There’s no refuse that the Monsoons have pleasantly surprising, and it’s only natural that we celebrate in our notso-gloomy style! I am an umbrella girl! I don’t prefer to change a thing about my outfit, come rain or storm. The long shorts are my all time favourite when it pours and a tank top keeps me cozy. I love light layering and for monsoon and would love to go for anything above the knee and sandals, minimal jewellery Black is my color when I plan to walk around in the extreme monsoons rains.

Accessorize Pick a brilliant-hued umbrella for and a LA mode look. A rainbow shaded umbrella will add to your look very well if you are a school-going lady. For eolder ladies, umbrellas with polka spots or little flower prints are appropriate. Transparent umbrellas are also in fashion. The most critical thing to recollect is that the purse or wallet you use in the rain ought to be absolutely waterproof. Cloth or daily use bags can prompt loss of paper cash, phones and so forth. It would be better to choose bright coloured bags in floral or animal prints, multi-shaded stripes or also neon transparent bags. Footwear you pick in rainy season should be waterproof. Leather shoes and sandals are a complete no-no for the rainy season. Rain can ruin your costly leather footwear for eternity. Waterproof footwear ought to have a decent hold to shield you from slipping. Add a considerable measure of hues to your footwear for the storm.

Yemen Syed Theatre artist Monsoon fashion to me is keeping it “lighter yet darker”. Lighter (in terms of weight) clothes is something I would prefer in monsoons, because it’s obvious you get caught in a sudden down pour during monsoons and the rain will just make your clothes heavier! So I prefer clothes like cotton T-shirts, Kurtis, light denim or jersey materials which are not heavy, can easily dry up, and also look good! And the darker side definitely refers to the shades of the clothes I chose. Water, mud, dirt are oblivious in monsoon, wearing clothes in shades of white, yellow, beige and staining my clothes is definitely not what I want. So I would prefer shades of blue, green, brown, black, or floral prints.

Varalini Jwala Executive Manager I think monsoon is the time when women can play around with fresh light fabrics. As it is rainy most of the times during this season, it’s a smarter option to choose cotton, silk and chiffon as they dry out very quickly. Coming to foot wear, I like wearing covered bellies or peep toes as they give stability while walking. Monsoons call for skirts, shorts, over sized coats and denim jackets. Pastel colours are a great option for monsoons with very subtle make up, or the new no makeup look would be ideal. Talking about hair, neat up dos, sleek ponytails and messy buns would never be out of style. Flip flops are a big no for this time of the year. People who like traditional dressing can always choose to wear kurthis with ankle length denims or tights with kolhapuris, bellies. One can also play around with indo western looks. Some statement neck pieces and chunky jewellery would upgrade any outfit. This is a very comfortable yet a trendy way of dressing for Indian monsoons.

On the day of my marriage, my husband actually asked me whether I was wearing makeup as he was always used to seeing me with makeup done a certain way. A student who walks out for Stylicious By Sam Makeup Artistry steps out with the confidence of being able to doll up a bride and our students have always shared the good news that they have worked on a paid project soon after they graduate. Could you give us some tips on wearing makeup in the monsoon? Monsoon is a season we all wait for, however, we have the fear of our makeup not staying for long due to a lot of moisture being present in the air around us, and there is also the risk of getting wet in the rain. A few tips that I can share on monsoon makeup would help make this season a more enjoyable one with the makeup lasting longer.

The Eyes: A waterproof gel liner or mascara are your friends in the monsoon. Avoid kohl in the waterline.

The Lips: Add the glam factor & brighten your look with a nontransfer matte lipstick to complete the long-lasting monsoon look.

What are your favourite waterproof beauty products? My favourite waterproof products are:• Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation • Lancome Hypnose waterproof mascara • PAC Cosmetics Waterproof Gel Liner • Benefit Benetint

Primer: A primer is your best friend as it will protect your skin from the humidity and help the makeup last longer. Always choose one as per your individual skin type. If you can’t live without a liquid foundation, look for a waterproof one.

The Base: Skipping a liquid foundation in the rains and replacing it with a tinted moisturiser or BB Cream topped with a setting powder helps in the season.

What are the three must-haves this monsoon? The three must-haves in monsoon which you should have in your bag:Waterproof gel liner Tinted Moisturiser Non-Transfer Bright Lipstick.

The Blush: A cream blush is a good alternative to a powder blush during the monsoon as it will stay put longer and also provide the fresh dewy skin finish. A liquid lipstick also does the job well if a cream blush is not available.

WELLNESS

Health Tips for Monsoon Did you know that monsoons reduce the immunity power of our body? This is why we’re more susceptible to health issues during this season. Because allergies, mosquito-transmitted infections such as malaria and dengue, cold and cough are at an all-time high, it becomes crucial for us to take precautionary measures like keeping our surroundings clean, washing hands before and after having a meal and applying a strong insect repellent. We’ve asked Dr Somnath Gupta, a Consultant Physician, Diabetologist and ICU in-charge at Pace Hospitals to share with us some health tips to stay fit this rainy season. Mosquitoes are everywhere during monsoon. Could you suggest some precautions that we can take to protect ourselves from mosquito-borne diseases? Some of the precautions that can be taken are: Removing or dumping out water-holding containers. This can reduce breeding areas for disease-carrying mosquitoes and prevent illness. It is also advised to use a safe and effective mosquito repellent containing DEET (up to 30%). Wear loose-fitting, light coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants. Head nets can be used in areas with high mosquito populations. Turn overthrow or cover any items that could hold water. Remove small pools of standing water at and around your surroundings. Install window and door screens. What are the most common illnesses that occur due to the weather change and how to prevent them? Influenza (cold and flu), Typhoid, Acute Gastroenteritis, Cholera, Dengue Fever, Hepatitis A, Malaria and Viral Fever are the most common illnesses that occur due to weather change. Some precautions that can be taken are: Ensure that there are no breeding places for mosquitoes around the house. Wash your hands thoroughly after being in crowded places. Since food gets spoilt quickly due to the increase in temperature, make sure that leftover food is refrigerated at the earliest Avoid eating in unhygienic places and ensure you drink boiled water. Avoid exposure to viral infections like flu and chicken pox. Avoid going out between 11 am and 4 pm as much as possible to prevent heatstroke. Use sunscreen to avoid sunburn and cover your head and face with a scarf or hat. How can we take better care of ourselves and kids during monsoon? Wear suitable clothes. Cover your mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing. Regularly wash your hands with soap and water. Avoid exposure to illness at home or school.

Have a balanced, healthy diet to build immunity. If you have a preexisting lung or respiratory condition, consult a specialist during the change of season. Vaccination against flu may be considered for people at a high risk of getting flu and for people who are vulnerable like young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart and lung disease and people over 65 years. Moisturise your skin regularly to prevent dry and itchy skin. What foods should be consumed and what should be avoided during this season? Boiling water is a must-have during monsoons, which helps to kill harmful bacteria and germs in the water. Fried foods should be avoided as it can lead to indigestion and unrest in the stomach Raw foods should also be avoided, especially cut fruits and vegetables and juices from roadside stalls and carts as there is a high risk of water contamination which in turn can lead to water-borne diseases. Watery foods like muskmelons, watermelons and lassi from roadside vendors should be avoided Foods rich in antioxidants such as bitter gourd, seasonal berries, neem and pumpkin should be consumed to stay healthy, prevent infections and boost your immunity Root vegetables should be washed properly before consuming or avoided. Spicy foods should also be avoided as they lead to an increase in body temperature and might further lead to allergies. Antioxidant herbal teas boost immunity.

Move it or lose it Fitting standard exercise into your daily timetable may appear to be troublesome at first. However, you can begin gradually, and break your activity time into pieces. Start off with 10 active minutes. You can work your way up to doing the prescribed measure of activity. How much exercise you require relies upon your age and wellbeing. Exercise stands out when it comes to picking activities that can improve your wellbeing. It has numerous advantages, including enhancing your general wellbeing and wellness and decreasing your risk of contracting some illnesses. While there is a large variety to choose from, it is important to choose something that fits your body type and your goals. Most people prefer to mix it up when it comes to exercise. 40 JULY, 2018 - TULIP

Aerobic activities increase your breathing and heart rate. They keep your lungs, heart, and circulation system solid and enhance your general wellness. Few examples - energetic walk, running, swimming, and biking. Flexibility practices extend your muscles and can enable your body to remain flexible. Yoga and doing different stretches can make you more adaptable. Balancing activities can make it less demanding to stroll on uneven surfaces and help anticipate falls. To enhance your stability, judo or activities like staying still on one leg can help. Strength training practices make your muscles more grounded. A few examples are lifting weights and working out with a resistance band.

As a side note, believe that a marathon is not the best objective episode for new runners. Even though things like “bucket-list” dwell in a place in our sport; creating long-term goal or passion for long-distance running is tougher when so many out there are aiming the longest and most brutal running event as their first-ever race targets. Can people with little running skill “finish” a marathon with 8, 10 or 12 weeks of preparation? Undoubtedly. But why not we take up to 6 months and do it better, keeping your goals aside? Moving your workout sessions back and forth is really not a problem, a program could be controlled—even the mileage is not that important. Marathon is a distance of 42 kilometers and 385 yards and is rounded of to 42.2 kilometers officially. The first official Marathon was held in the 1896 Olympics, though the actual history of marathon can be dated back to 490 BC wherein Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens to deliver the message about the defeat of Persians. Though there is enough of conflicting history about marathon, irrespective of which marathon is one single event that brings tens and thousands of people together creating a sense of oneness and togetherness. Other than the Olympic marathon which happens once in 4 years, there are close to 800 marathon events held all over in a year of which the Berlin Marathon, New York Marathon, Boston Marathon, London Marathon, Tokyo Marathon, and Chicago Marathon are called World Marathon Majors in which elites and amateurs take Part. Each of these marathons sees a participation of 45000 plus Runners across all categories. India is catching up on marathons as well. The Mumbai Marathon, Hyderabad Marathon, Chennai Marathon, Delhi Marathon, Kolkata Marathon, Spice Coast Cochin Marathon, Bengaluru Marathon also attracts thousands of people across the country. Runners take these marathons seriously with a fair mix of fun and train most often with their Running Buddies and Groups almost all through the year thus creating awareness about health, the importance of outdoor life and having a good time along the way. Deccan Pen Store We never really care much about how old pens could be, the only thing we care about is how fancy they are and just wait for the latest model but this does not apply for those who are pen lovers and have a collection of pens akin to antiques. Wonder how were pens first introduced in the twin cities? For this, first you must read and then go check out this amazing 90 year old pen store located in Abids. Let’s go back in time. Just think how frustrating it would be to travel to Mumbai only to purchase a pen. S A Siddiqui from Allahabad was the son of a farmer who had come to Hyderabad in the 1920s and founded a huge pens-related business opportunity and had set up the Deccan Pen Store in 1928. He first brought some samples from Conway Stewart Pen and Duro Pen from Calcutta in the early 1920s. Before setting up the store he did door to door delivery. Soon his business picked up when not only students of Osmania University but also the royalty started showing interest in buying these pens. This iconic store sold various types of pens like, handmade pens and fountain pens, and later decided to start a pen repair section. The Nawabs and Maharajas used to visit the store frequently and did not like being disturbed while looking at and admiring the pens. Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, also known as the Salar Jung-III once placed an order for 358 pieces of blackbird pens which were accurately delivered. In 1990 the original store was shifted to Orient Estate in Abids with new branches in which new branches of it opened in Ameerpet and Secundrabad. As of now, the Secunderabad store has been shut down and a new one has opened up in Hitech City. Till date this is the oldest store that sells international pen brands. They not only get orders from states like Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh but also from abroad for their ebonite handmade pens. Deccan Pen Store now is not only a pen retailer and repair place but has also become a complete brand by itself. They have pens ranging from Rs. 3 to Rs. 3,50,000. They also have a collection of pencils and fountain pens from Germany, Turkey, USA and more. Haleem Siddiqui is the present proprietor of Deccan Pen Store. S A Siddiqui had brought pen repairing tools from Europe in 1930s which are still being used by his sons. The store recently received a 1903 Waterman pen from The Waterman Company headquarters in France which had to be repaired and was done using its original parts. These master brothers at times take up to 3 to 4 months to repair a particular pen. The store is being run peacefully by the 6 Siddiqui brothers and their children in perfect harmony. INTERNATIONAL TIGER DAY!

W

Worldwide Tiger Day, frequently called International Tiger Day, is observed on July 29 to give overall mindfulness on the safeguarding of tigers. It was first recognised in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit and has been noted from that point forward. This was started in light of the fact that the wild tigers are near extinction. The Tiger Day is to progress the insurance and development of the wild tiger’s living spaces and to pick up help through mindfulness for tiger preservation. With a specific end goal to ensure tigers and their common territory, Tiger Day is commended around the world.

FEATURE Bhavya Joshi, Student Tigers in India now and again keep getting run over by activity in the woodland area, and this means the requirement for expanding both the zone of centre living space and the cradle zone around it. Organization in the Steering Committee is one of the principle hindrances to the effective brisk execution of the ultimate objectives and targets. After the WWF financing ceased, state-supported subsidizing has lessened to a stream and the officers are underfunded and under-prepared. Whatever positive PR you read in the press is to be taken with a grain of salt. But, preservation endeavours for a wildcat like a tiger is a long haul duty and we have to monitor the numbers throughout the following decade before articulating Project Tiger as a win (or disappointment). As per the Wildlife Protection Society of India, “13 tigers were chased in 2011 instead of 30 of every 2010, a decrease of 57%. We ought to commend the legislature of India for the greater part of their endeavours in ensuring these radiant enormous felines. In India, announced tiger passings identified with reduced poaching

achieved a record-breaking high in 2016. The funds received by the government helps to ensure that the tiger population is protected through tiger reserves and penalizes poachers with detainment and fines through effective guarding tactics. Project Tiger was introduced in 1973 by the Government of India. Today, India has a good tiger population. There are around 39 conserves set up across the nation

to ensure tigers live in their natural habitat. One of the world’s biggest tiger populaces is found in the Sunderbans a substantial mangrove timberland zone shared by India and Bangladesh on the northern bank of the Indian Ocean. This territory harbours Bengal tigers and shields beachfront locales from storm surges and wind harm. However, rising ocean levels that were caused by environmental change threaten to debilitate and wipe out these backwoods and the natural surroundings of this tiger populace. As indicated by the WWF contemplate, without relief endeavours, anticipated ocean level- about a foot by 2070- could obliterate the entire Sunderbans tiger environment. One approach to help conservation is to bring issues to light by taking part in campaigns composed in your neighbourhood. Taking to the Internet and online networking is another approach to connect with individuals and convey the desperation to help tiger preservation. From marking petitions and circling impactful articles and recordings, the Internet is an instrument that can have a heap of an effect in the present mechanical age. To wrap things up, a standout amongst the best approaches to effectively help tiger preservation is to volunteer at different NGOs committed to natural life assurance. Offering your chance and mastery to a natural life protection association isn’t just going to profit the tiger and its territory but may also give you a chance to be engaged with field extends that could prompt enterprises you won’t overlook.

Rituraj Phukan Mentor & District Manager, The Climate Reality Project Secretary General, Green Guard Nature Organization Assam Coordinator, Kids For Tigers “India represents the last hope for the survival of tigers in the wild, but the Royal Bengal Tiger faces several existential threats. In addition to poaching, climate change has emerged as a challenge to tiger conservation in the country. Apex predators like the tiger are especially vulnerable to climate change due to the lack of alternative suitable habitats for them to migrate. Change in precipitation patterns could change the nature of the remaining tiger habitats in India and make them less suitable for its future survival. A deficit in soil moisture due to less rainfall could increase tree mortality in the deciduous forest habitat and trigger a shift towards open tropical dry forests, which are considered to be less productive for tigers. Similarly, lack of adequate fodder could trigger herbivores to migrate to greener pastures. Tigers are very territorial and even if the predator succeeds in following the prey across the fragmentated landscape, it could lead to a deadly fight with the resident feline. In the Sundarbans tiger habitat, the threats are different. Rising sea levels and salinization will impact coastal mangroves and wetlands and is expected to decimate the habitat of the tiger. Straying from protected areas will increase poaching vulnerabilities and also multiply the potential of man-animal conflict.” Picture courtesy : Max Ali 46 JULY, 2018 - TULIP

HELP THE NEED

A pair of sorrowful eyes peeks out from between those metal bars. Whiskers shudder in hope and eagerness, ears raise, and a little head slopes as a people walk by. Will this family be the one, wondering? This situation reruns millions of times each year around the country. Animals which are no longer wanted by their owners or those which are lost are dropped off at these animal shelters, where they are protected and cared for but often only for the short term. Sadly, most of the shelter centres is the last stop for more than half of the animals which end up there. Only about less than half of those animals that enter the shelters will ever return to their original owner or find a new home. The rest will have to be put out of their misery through euthanasia. There are non-profit organizations which are run by the government animal control services and few are run by private organizations. TULIP - JULY, 2018 51

FEATURE Blue Cross of Hyderabad

Blue Cross is the first animal rescue centres ever in Hyderabad and it was founded by actress Amala and Nagarjuna Akkineni in the year 1992 along with the few members who are experienced in rescuing and housing the animals in foster care. It all began in a small room in Shantinagar Veterinary Hospital and after a long way they managed to come up with the city’s first animal rescue ambulance that was donated by Nagarjuna. In the coming years, the organization grew and opened up at Jubilee Hills, and is now 2 acres of land space. Blue Cross not just rescues animals but also is open for adoption, provides shelters, encourages donations and prevents animal cruelty. People for Animals Foundation

This organization was founded in the year 2000. People for Animals Foundation primarily focus on the execution of animal rights and its laws. PFA Hyderabad founding members have been relentlessly involved in animal welfare campaigns, animal rights and cruelty anticipation. They have taken immense steps towards a more humane Hyderabad. Most of the shelters try to take in domesticated animals like birds, horses, goats or cows but most of the time it is cats and dogs. Some animals are brought in by owners who can no longer keep the animals. Others are found roaming on the streets and are brought in by animal control officials. Usually, an animal is usually kept in a shelter until its owner returns or it is adopted. Sadly, shelters cannot provide enough rooms to forever house all of the animals they receive or find. Most of the cats and dogs that enter shelters are put to sleep because they are probably sick or old, or they do not find a home. Where: 5-4-72, Opp. Sundaram Motors, M.G. Humane Society for the Protection and Care of Animals

Awareness, Adoption and ABC (Animal Birth Control) this is the 3A motto which is followed by HSPCA. The active volunteer’s team in this organization has come together for the anticipation of brutality towards animals mostly stray dogs. Their mission is to create an alertness and responsiveness amongst the people for peaceful living of these animals. Types of Animal Shelters

Most shelters will take every stray that arrives, but are forced to euthanize some animals when they become too full. A smaller number of shelters only accept limited numbers of animals but promise to care for them until they are adopted. These are called “no kill” shelters. Despite the name, though, these shelters will euthanize animals that are too old or ill to care for anymore. Not all homeless cats and dogs end up in shelters. Some go to animal rescue groups. Many of these groups specialize in a specific breed. The animals often come from questionable breeding centres that have been shut down, as well as from kennels, veterinarian offices or local animal shelters. Unlike shelters, animal rescue organizations don’t necessarily have facilities in which to house the animals. Often, volunteers care for the animals in their own homes (fostering) until they can be adopted. Few animal sanctuaries also serve as refuges for homeless animals. But his happens only with the area is huge enough and consists of houses which takes care of dogs and cats, as well as goats, donkeys, cows, pigs and all those animals which belong to the farm animal category. Few sanctuaries also take care of wild animals like lions, tigers, bear and many more but this would be done only if the animal will be staying in the sanctuary for rest of its life and is not up for any kind of adoption. The volunteers and workers in the sanctuary should be taking care of these cute creatures like their own pets and make the animals feel loved and comfortable. The animal must be fed twice a day, their cages must be cleaned, they must be taken for a walk and provided with sufficient water and petted. Those animals which are sick must be given special attention and and their medical needs must be taken care of. It’s also obligatory in many shelters to neuter or sterilize all pets that are accepted or are already there. This is done to prevent unwanted pregnancy and preventing overcrowding in the shelters.

Whole adopting any animal it is more like signing up for a dating, except that your other potential partner is from a different species. But before signing up for this you need to go through certain formalities like basic information – where you live, age and pet ownership history. Once you’ve chosen your pet, you’ll have to go back and wait for a particular period of time which usually is 24 to 48 hours. In the end you will have to a contract promising to take good care of your pet and to return the animal to the shelter if you can no longer care for it. Shelters also cut down mismatches by making every effort to give each pet what they accept by doing a full background check. If it is a case where the owner has given their pet to shelter, the shelter will ask the owner if the animal had any wicked habits, like chewing on the furniture, biting and urinating on floor. Shelter employees will also do a health check up, if the animal has been de-wormed or not and if it has any diseases or no. Once you’ve found the right pet, few shelters offer post-adoption services, such as pet parenting and dog training classes, that can help you bond with your new pet.

Despite the many animals waiting for homes, shelter employees are all too aware that many people adopt pets without thinking the decision through, just to end up bringing the animals back a few weeks later. So shelters try to learn all they can about potential adoptive families and match pets with the most compatible, responsible and caring owners possible. For that reason, you shouldn’t expect to walk into a shelter and walk out the same day with a pet.

Evolution of invitations “I want to do everything through internet”. Another person who thinks their wedding invite can be conveyed by email, or WhatsApp, a RSVP on their wedding site. What would be the WORST conceivable approach to do your wedding invitations even though it is the greatest occasion of your life, particularly on the off chance that you really need individuals to react to your invitation in an opportune way. Soumya Guntoor

Founder of The Jane Austen Society of India Invitations to weddings and parties have changed drastically in two ways: One is that you can now invite anyone from anywhere around the world through the internet, without even stepping out of your home. Another plus point of digital invites is that it saves a lot of paper. When people receive paper invites, they don’t know what to do of it once the wedding/party is over....they most likely throw them away, which leads to

a huge waste of paper and thereby trees. Sonam Kapoor really set an example with her beautiful digital invite....The only thing people must be careful about while sending digital invites is to send their guests a reminder before the event, because digital invites can get buried under a ton of mails and people may forget about the event. On the other hand, physical invites have become more ornate and also creative and now include gifts like sweets, chocolates, silver items and the like. People are trying to make an effort to look different and be more creative when it comes to personal invites. There are also eco-friendly paper invites which come with seeds now! I think that’s wonderful. People want to stand out from their peers and are willing to shell out a lot of money for a one-of-a-kind invite, which is a big boost to the graphic design industry and the paper market. The only downside to this is that there are people who can’t afford it, but want to show off, so they end up spending an arm and a leg (maybe on the behest of the bridegroom’s family for a “grand” wedding), only to land into financial troubles later.

We all say that old school is cool. Yes, it is the coolest and the most valuable one. It was the time when consent was required and accepted, in the same way people used to invite their family and friends personally. We still believe that personal touch is important and is believed but now it has completely changed. Do you think social media is really connecting people or making them fall apart? When a small invitation message is sent to people, it is not as valuable as personally inviting people; nobody would value it so much. This was an overview on how invitations and inviting people for an event have changed. While it is now easier and even budget friendly to send out thousands of invites, it has probably lost its charm. Some things are best done old school!

Keerthi Rao

The way of sending our welcome cards in India got down to business just in the 19th century and this thought was acquired from the British. Printing invitation cards was excitedly embraced by the Indian sovereignty, dealers and landowners of that time, anxious to share British practices and behavior. Invitation cards in India were in this manner a clone of the Victorian invitation cards. Understanding that traditional, engraved invitations are no longer a reasonable financial alternative for a lot of people as these invitations will cost you a bomb, when you have a lot of invitations to be printed. Those of you who aren’t familiar with the “engraved” invitation, once upon a time, all invites were produced individually by being pressed on an inked copper plate. But in contemporary India, we love everything to be simple and easy and this is how social media has helped as a platform. Now days for any birthday party, wedding or any event we just create a WhatsApp group and add all of those who are to be invited to that particular event. Technology is very influential and it depends on the individual on how they use it without losing out on anything valuable. Not only WhatsApp has got in a change in the way we invite people but also Facebook. We create an event page and invite all those who you

Surgeon, Osmania Medical College Earlier people used to come home and invite personally, it take some time, they chit-chat which is more friendly. But this time because of vast growth in technology and all the internet things it has become easier. They simply create WhatsApp groups and they keep on reminding everybody on it which is a good think I feel. I won’t take sides as I am comfortable with both and it’s good as well. Few of us tend to forget a lot of things but these internet invitations help us a lot and help to keep the dates in mind. Things like automatic voice calls or auto sms is generated which helps the others to save time and keep it clear. All these helps to not miss the event. Coming to the old way of inviting people, it is obviously friendly but we need to remember and keep on following up on it. In the present day’s nobody has time to remember all of that. Both the ways are friendly but it depends on the individual. We need to keep ourselves updated but that does not mean we need to forget the olden ways. I think if the older generation had this internet facility they would use it too and right now the older generation is really appreciating the new ways.

Thailand Breathing Romance in

A delightful trip to Thailand could turn around your mood. Being invited to visit this wonderful country was a dream we were blessed with. The TTM (Thailand Travel Mart) – Million shades of Romance had us over to experience Thailand like never before. We indulged into pure luxury and romantic travel attractions to feature the country’s rich culture and history, beautiful nature and pristine beaches, not to forget the best of Thai gastronomy focusing on unique culinary traditions from Thailand’s eastern seaboard region. Plus, a full range of tourism-related amenities and accommodation. All these are important factors that come together to make Thailand an outstanding destination and make luxurious, romantic dreams come true. Tourism Authority of Thailand expected 300 international buyers from over 60 countries to attend who were to be joined by 300 Thai sellers. Preference was given to buyers specialising in luxury, honeymoon, weddings and romantic holidays. It was hosted in Pattaya, at the Ocean Marina Yacht Club. We try to sum up our experience at this enthralling place as we take you along. 60 JULY, 2018 - TULIP

We started off with a welcome party at the beach. Everybody looked ravishing at the all-white themed party where the music and company were simply the best. It was a ‘Summer Beach’ theme in its true sense. After landing at the venue and being welcomed by some wholesome lunch, we headed to the wine tasting session at Silverlake Vineyard, an enormous place situated in the countryside south-east of Pattaya- so undeniably surreal. Starting off with the tour of the vineyard, where

we experienced the whole process of winemaking and storage. RosĂŠ Grande and Chardonnay- pick your choice to tingle your tongue and mind. Later, we headed to a beach party at the Pinnacle Grand Gomtien Hotel, followed by an extravagant dinner. The fun part about the trip was we all were dressed down to resort wear on all days, what more could one ask for? Rising and shining to another day, with breakfast done and dusted, we went to the Floating Market. With beautiful wooden houses amidst water and lots of delightful things to eat, foods being the main draw here. The market is divided into four sections, where you can expect to find eateries, fruits, vegetables, souvenirs and art galleries. Later on, dipping into the sea milieu with Blue Voyage, we went fishing and snorkelling. Another interesting part of the voyage was Rayong, a popular getaway for travellers where the atmosphere is peaceful and serene. It is one of the best places to bring home some tropical fruits from their orchard.

TRAVEL

Before an overnight stay at this beauty, we went to Pak Nam Prasae, an area that is abundantly rich in natural resources in the swampy areas of Pa Sae River, along with the thick mangrove forests. We visited the Baan ThaRanae where we took a magnificent boat ride, out to the forest. We indulged in activities that we hadn’t before - planting the shellfish, ten pin bowling and kayaking. The level of fun and amusement kept increasing with the whole bunch of enthusiasts that made the trip even merrier.

Snorkelling & Swimming Saikaew Beach Samed, Island

We took a ferry ride to start the journey at Ko Chang, one of the most beautiful islands with white sandy beaches. It is known to be home to a variety of wildlife. We took another dip into the blue waters to experience a parallel surreal world, underwater: snorkelling. We also tried our hands on some Thai traditional cooking! Lots of signature dishes were made! Another day called for a visit to HuaiRaeng, it is one the richest canals of the world located in Trat State. We were here for a remarkable culinary ride and had tête-à-tête with the locals sharing more of life, culture and wisdom. We were offered a welcome drink, a concoction of butterfly pee (known to have antioxidants and reduces anxiety and stress levels) and kumquats, which was very refreshing and colourful! We had our rice meal lunch served and wrapped in betel leaves (they are known to have originated from South East Asia and have been cultivated for at least a thousand years) which tastes as exotic as they sound. A traditional surprise element was the Khanom Chan, a dessert made of 9 layers which represent prosperity. It contains coconut milk and is sweet and smooth in texture. Coming to an end to a memorable tour in Thailand, it is the hospitality of the people, the warmth, the extensive cultures, exotic places and some fine Thai food that makes the place what it is. Eight days of a crazy ride gave us a whole new perspective of Thailand. The yacht rides, snorkelling, great adventures give you an amazing opportunity to explore with your better half is what makes Thailand oh so romantic. Thailand is one of the most exotic, romantic destinations and Pattaya has so much more to offer the same. It is a priceless feeling to travel in Pattaya with your loved one. From the Jomtien beach to the underwater world experience, Pattaya is a hub for couples to come to celebrate their weddings, honeymoons and also do some picturesque pre-wedding photo shoots for the scenic beauty it offers. If you want to have an astounding view with some remarkable seafood, Glass House Restaurant in Pattaya, by the beach will blow your mind! Thailand Travel Mart left no stone unturned to reflect Thailand being “a dream come true” for couples looking for a romantic getaway. Thailand, in General, has the best of food; we also binged on the mango rice, indulged in knowing so much more about its popularity and Thai cuisine in general. While we were in Bangkok, our stay at Grand Hyatt was a pleasant one, Spasso an Iconic Restaurant and Bar has some authentic Italian cuisine with enticing wood fire pizzas, an extravagant buffet spread regional specialities and delicious desserts to end your meal with.

Huracán LP580-2 Chetan Bolli who looks up to his father Satya Bolli and Elon Musk as his role models was born in Orange County, California but has lived in Hyderabad most of his life. He completed his graduation from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC) with degrees in Economics and Computer Science; he decided to move back to Hyderabad and received the Lamborghini as a graduation gift from his parents. Chetan Bolli now works as a business analyst at his family’s company, Prolifics, a global digital technology company providing end to end solutions which mainly operates from the US, Canada, UK, Germany and India. Have you always been a Lamborghini enthusiast? Yes, I have been a huge fan of the brand since my childhood. I grew up with posters and scale models of the Diablo, Murciélago and Gallardo. Although I love many other car brands including Ferrari and Porsche, I think Lamborghinis have the best designs with their sharp lines. Their cars look like fighter jets designed for the road! Tell us about your car. I currently drive the Lamborghini Huracán LP580-2. This model is the successor of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2. It has a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a naturally aspirated V10 at its heart and a double clutch transmission for instant gear shifts. Why did you choose this model? I chose this model as it is the only rear-wheel-drive Lamborghini on sale today. You don’t have to do insane speeds to have fun with it. There are faster models in the Huracán range and the Aventador has a lot more drama, but I decided to go with the more fun model instead. Did you make any modifications to it? I got Lamborghini’s factory race exhaust installed even before I took delivery of the car! Lamborghinis are all about drama and being loud, and the stock exhaust system was a tad quiet for my taste. I got the 1016 Industries carbon fibre wing a year later. The wing enhances the looks of the car and also provides me with better grip at high speeds. Top speed is slightly reduced, but that is not an issue for me. I also got the car wrapped in satin black to protect the original paint and make the car look like a Batmobile!

Are you a part of any supercar clubs? I am one of the founding members of ‘Club GT Hyderabad’. Our club meets every Sunday to go on long drives in our supercars. We also do charity drives and track days at the Buddh International Circuit occasionally. I am also a member of two pan India supercar clubs, Cannonball Club and Performalux. Tell us about your garage, The Batcave. Since the Lamborghini is too low to make it into our original garage, we had to build another garage for it. Being a huge Batman fan, I always had the fascination to build my own ‘Batcave’, so I went ahead with this idea and designed the place myself. It is a mix of ‘Batman’ and ‘Lamborghini’ elements. The Batcave features full black interiors and LED ambient lights without any pillars/columns in between to maximize parking space. Apart from space to park around 5 cars, the layout includes a living area, bar, bed, full bathroom and a storeroom for my car parts. The centre table in the living area is custom built with my stock Lamborghini exhaust system inside. For side tables, I made use of the Lamborghini’s old tires. All cars in the bat cave are wrapped to satin black to match the theme and I use the following nicknames: Lamborghini Huracán (Batman), Mini JCW (Robin) and my wife’s Mercedes E Class (Catwoman). My scale model collection (40 cars) is on display too, I have been collecting them since my childhood. I spend most of my weekends here meeting friends and pursuing my hobbies. ENTERTAINMENT Sridevi gets best actress for Mom Bollywood actor Sridevi was among Indian film performers honored at the International Indian Film Academy Awards, or IIFA, Bollywood’s biggest event of the year, which took place in Bangkok, Thailand this year. ‘Incredibles 2’ smashes box-office record to become highest grossing Hollywood animation film in India

Walt Disney’s ‘Incredibles 2’ has raked in Rs 22.3 crore in India in just five days, topping ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ in box-office collection to become the highest grossing Hollywood animation film in the country. The film, released in 925 screens across India last week, follows ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, another box-office record breaker from Walt Disney. Animation film ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’, released in 2016, had a lifetime collection of Rs 22.12 crore in the country. “The remarkable success of ‘Incredibles 2’ is a testament of the growing popularity of animation in the country,” said Bikram Duggal, head – studio entertainment, Disney India. For ‘Incredibles 2’, Disney had roped in Bollywood actor Kajol to voice Helen (Elastigirl) and promote the film too, which trade pundits believe has helped push up collections. ‘Incredibles 2’ is a sequel to the 2004 film ‘The Incredibles’, which introduced the Parrs, a family of superheroes that was forced to live a quiet suburban life while hiding their powers. In the first film, Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan and his son Aryan had given voices for Mr Incredible and his son, Dash.

Sonakshi Sinha Joins UNESCO to Promote Cyber Safety For Youth

A post on the official Twitter handle of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s New Delhi cluster office read on Thursday: “Sonakshi Sinha joins Unesco to promote safe and secure online environment for children and help empower our future digital citizens.” Sonakshi retweeted it, and shared a video captioned: “I stand for protection of children.” In the video, she says: “Internet use in India is exploding and mobile access has really changed the game. But what does that mean for a country with the world’s largest child’s population? Is cyberspace safe for the children who are under 18? All 470 million of them? Do our girls get to lead their internet life with dignity? The truth is that the risks they are facing are shocking. Children are easy targets for cyber-bullying, online sexual abuse and exploitation, enticement to illegal behaviour and many more such horrific things. It is also true that internet and social media play a huge part in influencing the truth today. I am truly concerned, and as an active citizen, I would like to make sure that our boys and girls are protected both online and offline.” Stressing on the importance of education on the safe use of online spaces, the Bollywood actress said “This is something that has been highlighted by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals which I fully and truly support. That’s why I am joining forces with Unesco to help find cyber threats to children. I would also urge you to partner with Unesco and other agencies to help promote child safety online and help empower our future digital citizens. Let’s come together to help build a safer cyberspace for and with our children”.

Priyanka Chopra goes Instagram Official with Nick Jonas

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ lovefest continues. The Quantico star posted a photo of the singer and another man (who appears to be her brother, Siddharth Chopra) on her Instagram story yesterday during a beach trip to Goa, India. “My Favourite Men ,” she captioned the shot. Jonas had just made it Instagram official with Chopra days earlier, when he posted a video of her giggling and dancing towards him on a balcony. He captioned the clip, “Her ,” melting hearts across the internet. Not only does Chopra’s post mark her first time showing Jonas on the ‘gram, it also shows how the pop star is getting along with her family. Last week, the couple was seen out in Mumbai together. Jonas went on the trip to meet Chopra’s mother, Madhu where the duo reportedly had dinner with her recently. The couple still hasn’t publicly directly addressed their relationship, but the Instagram posts and several dates are enough proof.

Devi Sri Prasad is the highest paid music composer in Tollywood

It was the music of ‘Anandam’ (2001) that put Devi Sri Prasad ahead in the league. He has not only worked with A-list actors like Megastar Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, Venkatesh, Balakrishna but has also composed for youngsters like Ram Pothineni, Nani, Nag Chaitanya, Allu Arjun and many others. He has established himself as the best music composer in the Tollywood industry. As per the sources, he demands more than Rs 3 crore for a film and sometimes even this amount is not enough to lure him to do a project. But as he is among the best and has an in-depth knowledge of the music theory, arrangement and composition, the movie makers are reportedly always ready to shell out for him.

Sasha Chettri to make her Tollywood debut

Sasha Chettri who shot to fame with Airtel 4G television commercial, is all set to make her debut in Tollywood. She will be making her big screen debut as the leading actress in Sai Kiran Adivi’s yet-to-be titled movie. However, what is interesting in all this is that Sasha is apparently not taking any remuneration for this film. Sai Kiran Adivi is known for his films such as ‘Vinayakudu’, ‘Villagelo Vinayakudu’ and ‘Kerintha’. Sasha, after taking the ad world by storm, will surely be a delight to watch on the silver screen.

as n against Samuel Varg Amir Khan back in actio in Birmingham Amir Khan has vowed to deliver more “fireworks” against Samuel Vargas at Arena Birmingham on September 8. The 31-yearold welterweight needed just 39 seconds to stop Phil Lo Greco in April after nearly two years out of action and returns to the ring against Colombian Vargas. After his lengthy absence, Khan is working towards another big-name bout, and expects a tougher test against the Canada-based Vargas, who is ranked No 10 by the WBA. “One of my aims this year was to be as active as possible, so I’m very happy to get back in the ring again so soon against Samuel Vargas,” said Khan. “Vargas is a tough and well-schooled fighter, who has shared the ring with some top welterweights including Danny Garcia and Errol Spence Jr. I have to get past Vargas before looking at the biggest challenges going forward. I’m not going to be taking Vargas lightly because I know he will be coming with everything on September 8. I hope to give the fans in Birmingham the same excitement and fireworks as my last fight. It will be one not to miss!” But Vargas insists Khan should forget about another early victory, and warned the UK favourite to prepare for a punishing battle. “I am excited to step in the ring with Amir Khan on September 8,” said Vargas. “I am very pleased that my promoter Lee Baxter and Eddie Hearn from Matchroom Boxing could come to an arrangement fairly easily and make this fight happen. I have been granted more than enough time to properly prepare for Amir and you will see the best Samuel Vargas to date. Mark my words, we might both be from the same city and county but I am nothing like Phil Lo Greco that’s a guarantee - I’m going to give Amir hell.”

Shoaib Malik To Quit ODI Cricket After 2019 World Cup Ahead of Pakistan’s month-long Zimbabwe tour slated to get underway from July 1, former skipper Shoaib Malik revealed his plans of retiring from 50-over cricket after the 2019 ICC World Cup in England and Wales. Pakistan will face Australia and Zimbabwe in Twenty20 International (T20I) tri-series which will be followed by a bilateral ODI series against hosts Zimbabwe from July 13. Malik, who made his Pakistan debut in 1999 in a One-day International (ODI) against the West Indies at Sharjah, however wants to continue playing the shortest format of the game subject to his fitness and performances. “The 2019 World Cup is my last event of the 50-over cricket. I will try to play T20 cricket if I continue to stay fit and put up performances,” media reports quoted Malik as saying. He had retired from Tests in 2015. Malik, who has been part of Pakistan’s two major cricket moments -- the World T20 title in 2009 and the ICC Champions Trophy crown in 2017 -- expressed his desire to win the 50-over quadrennial tournament in 2019. “I have set goals for myself and one of them is winning the World Cup 2019. I already have two major cricketing titles in my career, the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy, and now this is the only title left,” he said.

MOVIES Movie Reviews

Veere Di Wedding There’s nothing holding back these 4 gutsy girls in the movie. The story introduces you to the four characters and sheds light on their complexities. Kalindi can’t come to terms with the idea of marriages and the other challenges that come with it. Avni can’t seem to find a soul mate though her nagging mom (Neena Gupta) is desperately trying to find her a suitable matrimonial match. Sakshi is a little too fiery to be tamed by relationships and Meera is married to a firang and they have a young child, but her marriage isn’t a cake walk either. Kalindi’s story is at the centre of it all and gradually other characters and their sagas unfold. Sonam, Swara and Shikha rally around with their own set of problems. Kareena excels in her role as a girl trying to find her own answers and coming to terms with the idea of marriage. ‘Veere Di Wedding’ is a brave effort indeed.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom The setup of the movie is that, following the new park’s destruction in the first Jurassic World, the now dinosaur-filled island has grown volcanically active. All the dinosaurs there are going to die in the impending eruption, effectively triggering a new extinction event, unless someone intervenes. Bryce Dallas Howard’s returning character Claire Dearing now works as an activist looking for any way to save the dinosaurs. Story basically takes place in the first act, and from there, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom goes to some surprising places. This movie’s climax almost goes in a fun new direction from what we’ve come to expect in this movies, but instead limply falls back on the familiar: a raindrenched, pseudo-horror cat-and-mouse between a singularly dangerous dino and a handful of human characters. It’s well done, but we’ve seen it before, and Fallen Kingdom diverts its own great setup to get there.

Athade The film begins with the World of Shekhar, where Shekhar (Dulquer Salmaan in a funny hairdo) and Radhika (Sai Dhansika) are college students, and most importantly, disabled individuals. He stammers when he speaks, she’s visually. But their families, especially Radhika’s brother (John Vijay), is none too happy about it. The second part World of Trilok (DQ) gives us a character who seems to be the protagonist. Justin (Anson Paul) helps cover up the accidental death of Aisha (Arti Venkatesh. Narrated as a gangster’s tale, Shiva (Dulquer, fantastically brooding) is the protagonist. His mother has left him and his brother is unable to bear their father’s abuse. This segment has other interesting characters like Shiva’s brother, who wants to follow in his footsteps. Rudra (Dulquer, all charm) is an army officer and in love with Bhama (Neha Sharma. But then Rudra learns that Bhama is about to marry someone else and he has to know why. The twist here works beautifully.

BOOKS The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters by Priya Parker

In The Art of Gathering, Priya Parker argues that the gatherings in our lives are lackluster and unproductive–which they don’t have to be. We rely too much on routine and the conventions of gatherings when we should focus on distinctiveness and the people involved. At a time when coming together is more important than ever, Parker sets forth a human-centered approach to gathering that will help everyone create meaningful, memorable experiences, large and small, for work and for play. Drawing on her expertise as a facilitator of high-powered gatherings around the world, Parker takes us inside events of all kinds to show what works, what doesn’t, and why. She investigates a wide array of gatherings–conferences, meetings, a courtroom, a flash-mob party, an Arab-Israeli summer camp– and explains how simple, specific changes can invigorate any group experience.

Warlight by Michael Ondaatje

From the internationally acclaimed, best-selling author of The English Patient:a mesmerizing new novel that tells a dramatic story set in the decade after World War II through the lives of a small group of unexpected characters and two teenagers whose lives are indelibly shaped by their unwitting involvement. In a narrative as beguiling and mysterious as memory itself–shadowed and luminous at once–we read the story of fourteen-year-old Nathaniel, and his older sister, Rachel. In 1945, just after World War II, they stay behind in London when their parents move to Singapore, leaving them in the care of a mysterious figure named The Moth. They suspect he might be a criminal, and they grow both more convinced and less concerned as they come to know his eccentric crew of friends: men and women joined by a shared history of unspecified service during the war, all of whom seem, in some way, determined now to protect, and educate (in rather unusual ways) Rachel and Nathaniel. A dozen years later, Nathaniel begins to uncover all that he didn’t know and understand in that time, and it is thus journey-through facts, recollection, and imagination-that he narrates in this masterwork from one of the great writers of our time.

A Long Way from Home

by Peter Carey Until now, the double Booker prize-winning Peter Carey has, in his own words, “avoided a direct confrontation with race, and the question of what it might mean to be a white Australian.” In his new novel, Carey returns to the remote country towns of his childhood—and unrelenting expanses of land in-between—to address this fraught history head-on. Irene Bobs loves fast driving. Her husband is the best car salesman in rural south eastern Australia. Together with Willie, their lanky navigator, they embark upon the Redex Trial, a brutal race around the continent, over roads no car will ever quite survive. A Long Way from Home is Peter Carey’s late style masterpiece; a thrilling high speed story that starts in one way, then takes you to another place altogether. Set in the 1950s in the embers of the British Empire, painting a picture of Queen and subject, black, white and those in-between, this brilliantly vivid novel illustrates how the possession of an ancient culture spirals through history - and the love made and hurt caused along the way.
