HERE’S WHY THEY LOVE TULIP

Entrepreneur/Fashion Designer

Tulip Magazine has grown leaps and bounds from the time I was featured on its cover a few years back. The magazine is very pictorial, precise and to the point. I like the quality that it maintains. It’s a wonderful magazine with a good readership, proof enough that it has sustained beautifully for so many years wherein there were many magazines that started and vanished all without a trace.

Simran Choudhary,

Femina Miss India Telangana, 2017 Congratulations to the entire Tulip team on their 8th year anniversary! I’m extremely ecstatic to be a part of this. Thank you so much for this ooportunity!

Regina Cassandra Actor

The Indian Foodies Hub

The Indian Foodies Hub offers various cuisines like Tandoor, Chinese, Continental and much more! With both indoor and outdoor seating and soft music playing in the background, the ambience is definitely a thumbs-up! Coming to food, we had the chilli fish and tangdi chicken for starters. While the tangdi chicken was perfectly flavoured, the chilli fish stole the show for us; it was simply amazing! For the main course, we went with the classic butter naan and butter chicken and we ate till we couldn’t move. The butter naan was super soft and the butter chicken had the authentic flavours! For dessert, we tried the chocolate brownie with ice-cream. The brownie had a rich and fudgy texture and was made even more delicious with the addition of vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate sauce! The Indian Foodies Hub is a must-visit for all the foodies as you get literally everything here! Address: 4th floor, Kimtee Square, road no. 12, Banjara Hills. Ph: 087907 29600

If you’ve been looking for a new place for some juicy and delicious burgers, look no further as Dirty Burgers is here to fulfil all your burger cravings! From having a wonderful ambience and both indoor and outdoor seating options, they also have plenty of board games that you can play while enjoying your food. Coming to the burgers, Sweaty Palm and Fat Boy have got to be our favourite. Sweaty Palm is a juicy chicken burger with a combination of special spicy sauces and vegetables served with fries, and Fat Boy is a tender lamb patty with charred onions and lots of cheese. Not only do these taste brilliant, they’ve got just the right amount of sauces and are cooked to perfection. Apart from burgers, Dirty Burgers also offers barbecue chicken strips and spicy chicken strips which are bursting with flavour! Address: Plot 440, Road No. 80, Film Nagar. Ph: +91 6300983754

A compilation of all things we are obsessing over this month

This Is Us

The story of a family whose three same-aged siblings struggle in unique ways throughout their lives is chronicled in this dramedy. In 1980, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore) lose one of their triplets during childbirth, but they decide to adopt an orphan born on the same day and build a home together; 17 years later, Jack dies and leaves behind a mourning family. In 2016, Rebecca has remarried, while Kate (Chrissy Metz), Kevin (Justin Hartley), and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) are now adults trying to figure out life on their own. Season 1 of the drama series follows the present lives of the Pearsons, with flashbacks to their past that might shed light on the circumstances surrounding Jack’s death. Watch: amazonprimevideo

The remarkable fauna and flora is matched by epic landscapes of an incredible diversity: you can go from rainforest to desert in just 300km. Few places on Earth offer such an intense kaleidoscope of nature. For travellers, attending a famadihana (traditional exhumation and reburial when relatives can communicate with their forebearer can be the highlight of a trip. There is much history to discover, too, from Antananarivo’s sacred hills to the pirate history of Île Sainte Marie. To enjoy all this and much more, plan your next holiday to Madagascar!

There comes a point when you need to stop trying to mend things or make things work. This doesn’t mean that you’re giving up, it just means you’ve realised that your efforts aren’t appreciated. Know your self-worth.

Over a Cappuccino with

Sharon Aamir “The undisputed Queen of Events”

How did you start your journey in the events industry as an Emcee and a DJ? As a kid, I always took part in elocution competitions/poetry recitations in school. And while I was in college, I was selected to host the annual day function. Post the ceremony, I was offered an event by the sound engineer. And my journey as a part-time emcee thus began. While anchoring events, I happened to meet DJs and discovered my love towards music. With the help of few senior DJs, I managed to learn the basics of mixing. The more you practice, the better you become! It’s been 17 years now in the events industry, and I love every moment of it! What are some of your most memorable events as an Emcee? With over 2000 events as an anchorperson, it’s hard to narrow it down to a few. Let me start with Government related and high profile events such Launch of India’s first Private Sector Missile Sub-systems manufacturing facility by Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems in the presence of Hon’ble Cabinet Minister for IT industries & Commerce (Telangana) Shri KTR Garu and His Excellency Hon’ble Ambassador of Israel to India Mr Daniel Carmon. International Plastics Exhibition IPLEX in Hyderabad in the presence of Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers - Mr Ananth Kumar, Aviation conclave event in the presence of his Excellency Shri ESL Narasimhan, Hon’ble Governor of Andhra Pradesh and many such events that included Ministers & Ambassadors. Then there are events which I hosted alongside Legendary Sports Icons such as Brett Lee, Sachin Tendulkar, Muttiah Muralitharan, V V S Laxman, Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal to a name a few. Also alongside eminent personalities such as Gulzar Saab, Vyjayanthimala Bali, Late Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Bollywood/ Tollywood celebrities such as Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Mahesh Babu, Ram Charan, Malaika Arora, Ranbir Kapoor, Sonu Sood, Neha Dhupia, Naga Chaitanya to name a few. 30 JUNE, 2018 - TULIP

Tell us about TAA, How different is an artists’ association from the event bodies? When I started working there were no event bodies or associations. There were no artist managers. “Word of mouth” was the only marketing tool. Lately, with the formation of Telangana Artists Association (TAA), artists can now enjoy more working opportunities. Event bodies, on the other hand, are more suitable for event vendors and event managers. They don’t interfere in artists’ matters. The main USP of TAA is that once you become a member, your rights are legally protected by the association. Another added advantage is that you don’t need to pay

huge membership fees when compared to event bodies. TAA’s official artist manager - Ms Manju Nagshetty works towards forwarding all member artists’ profiles to all event vendors thereby saving the artists’ time over unnecessary socializing. Since the artist manager looks into the events’ castings, briefings, meetings, travel & payments, artists are safeguarded & protected from any kind of exploitations. Coming to payments, how does an artist decide the professional fee? An established artist will usually charge more than an upcoming or a junior artist. Professional fee is mainly decided by the experience and body of work the artist holds. It also varies from city to city depending on the economic growth. While some artists get on their high horses and turn down few events, I believe it’s important to have both quality and quantity of events in an artist’s profile. And that is possible only when you charge reasonably. For those artists who are doubtful about how much to charge, a local artist manager or a trusted event manager can be the best guide! What is your take on the current day competition and what are some ways to face it? Legendary athletes spend hours studying their previous matches because they understand the importance of learning from their own mistakes. The same is true of wise artists. Competition should be with yourself. Your every event must be better than the last. The number game looks bogus to me. And who decides all this? What is their credibility? Every association felicitates its own members by presenting them with awards. It has now become a commercial affair. Eventually, people will understand that these commercial rankings/awards hold no value. Some anchors get events based on glamorous presentations

LIFESTYLE

and then they are never hired again. When you, as an artist are repeatedly hired by the majority of the event managers, consider yourself as a winner! In the end, Talent is what actually matters and good work never goes unnoticed! The rat race is good for the rats so let’s leave it to them! Mumbai is considered to be the mecca of the entertainment industry, do you ever plan to shift base to Mumbai? Let’s not forget Hyderabad is one of the biggest IT hubs of India. As an Emcee, I tilt more towards corporate and government-related events than commercial events. Even as a DJ, I enjoy playing for the corporate events than the usual club parties. Being the first female corporate emcee/DJ of Hyderabad, I bagged many opportunities to perform extensively outside India and still do. So, as an Artist of Telangana, it does niggle me when people talk about less working opportunities here! Besides being a DJ / Emcee, I am also an entrepreneur, the co-owner of Miami Koffee n Kitchen in Hyderabad. And I am currently working on my next business venture, so there is too much on my plate already! What is your advice to all the upcoming Anchors and DJs in the events industry? It is a spectacular industry and there are lots of opportunities for everyone. Firstly, you need to believe in yourself as confidence matters the most in any field. Watch, learn and practice as much as you can! Be open to criticism. Maintain professional ethics. Goodwill matters a lot in the industry, so be polite and stay humble always.

Rapid Fire If you could get yourself anything, what would you get? I love to drive sports cars, I would get myself a Ferrari 488GTB ! What is the thing your most afraid of? Though I am a frequent flyer, I still have Flight Phobia. I have to say a little prayer each time I board a plane! What is the first thing you notice about someone when you first meet? I notice the eyes. Because you can read a lot about peoples’ intentions through their eyes. Well dressed personalities also create a good first impression on me. And then I match their personalities with the genuineness in their eyes. Phew! What fashion trend do you just not get? I have been a model, I have worn the best of the designer outfits. But what I don’t get is following any trend. We don’t need to follow what is in fashion all the time. It is more important to see what suits your body type! What was your favourite cartoon show growing up? Pink panther was my favourite cartoon show... Morning, noon or night? I am not a morning person. So it has to be Night! Stars shine bright at night. What was the last film you watched? It’s been almost two years I haven’t stepped into a theatre because of my baby. Batman vs. Superman was my last movie! What is one item you could NEVER live without? I live without anything. I am not attached to phones, iPads, make-up or any item in particular. Are you a dog or cat person? I am an animal lover. I have more love towards stray animals because there is nobody to look after them.

How was the Femina Miss India journey? It was a roller coaster ride. There are just so many emotions; you’re nervous, you’re anxious, you’re happy. Apart from that, what I love most is that I made a lot of friends who weren’t just my friends through the journey but even after it ended. I’m still in touch with those girls. I think that’s what it has given me; a bunch of people who are keepers and who will stay with me for the rest of my life. How do you manage your personal and professional life? My parents are extremely supportive. My family and friends understand that this is what she wants so they help me accommodate everything. My mom helps me with packing in case I have to just fly off to someplace. All I need to do is just call her and be like “Mamma, I have to go!” and she’ll be there. I think I’m very very lucky to have a support system that makes it all so easy for me. What is your skin and hair care regime? To be honest, I’m a very lazy person when it comes to skincare. I stick with home remedies. Aloe Vera is my go-to for everything. I don’t just apply it to my skin, I also consume it. I use it for hair as well. It makes my hair super soft and imparts a good shine. I wash my face twice or thrice a day depending on how many times I go out. At night, I just use an eye cream and considering our lifestyle these days I think all of us should use it; we don’t get enough sleep. I also use a moisturizer and sunscreen every day. What do you do in your leisure time? I love reading books! I have a balcony with a swing where I spend a lot of time reading. It’s the best place during rains. I’m also always trying to find a place that’s filled with dogs so I can just go there and play with them. Apart from that, I love annoying my brother whenever he’s around. I love music; it’s an obsession and I cannot function without it. In the morning, as soon as I wake up, my speakers are on and they don’t shut till I hit the bed at night, unless I’m going out. What kind of music do you like? I think I’m an old soul when it comes to my taste in music because I like a lot of artists from the 60’s. Frank Sinatra is someone I really admire. Apart from that, I enjoy listening to some contemporary artists like Kodaline, Kaleo, London Grammar, Broods. What motivates you? I keep imagining that when I’m 40 years old, I don’t want to look back

and be like why was I sleeping all day? I should’ve done something about it. I could’ve used that day to maybe create a memory that I could cherish. So the fact that I want to make a lot of memories keeps me going! I’m also not someone who can sit at home and just be. I need to constantly keep doing something. And I think just passion, drive and wanting to make my family proud. Not just my family but I don’t like being mediocre. I have set some aims for myself and unless I work on them, they won’t happen and it’s only up to me to do that. What are you currently working on? Do you have any upcoming projects? I just got done with Tarun Bhaskar’s movie for which I’m playing one of the female leads. It will be released sometime in late June. The release date has not been finalized yet. Apart from that, I might start working on a movie real soon. I’m just waiting for the plan to come through.

STREET FOOD - By Amrusha Mannava

Where else could you find the authentic taste of a certain culture but in street food. Street food is easy to afford, tasty, quick and non-formal. Tourists and food enthusiasts scour the streets in search of street food and for the taste of something local. We’ve listed out a few of the best Hyderabadi street food joints as well.

KATHMANDU MOMOS We’ve found a hidden gem. It’s very hard to find good Momos, but this man has done it. Kathmandu Momos is a small stall located outside ADP office in Somajiguda. They have three more branches in Hyderabad and in cities like Bangalore as well. The business is kept in the family as the band of brothers handle every tiny franchise. It has been seven years’ since the business started and Biswas says he is satisfied by the way his business is running. We tried their chicken momos, veg momos, paneer momos and chicken fried Momos as well and we just couldn’t stop right there, no amount of Momos had here is satiating. The Momos are accompanied with spicy chilly chutney which tasted marvellous. The Momos were soft and perfectly cooked. When asked about where Biswas learned how to cook Momos, he says he’s been watching his mother cook them from when he was a little child, and these Momos follow his mother’s secret recipe. These people are too humble for the way their Momos taste; given that they’re aware that they sell out by 8:00pm, when they’ve made enough food to last till 10:00pm. 6-3-1090/2, Raj Bhavan Road, Lumbini Classic Apartment, Somajiguda, Hyderabad. GOKUL CHAT Gokul chat is a very famous chat joint in Hyderabad. It has been running for 40 years and you’ll find that it is always crowded and swarming with people of every age. The 90’s people or students from Osmania University will know this place really well as it served as a hub for students for a very long time. Nevertheless, people still come here to reminisce and because their service and taste hasn’t changed a bit. No matter how crowded it is, the service time is quick, and everything is readily available. The owner of the joint is Premchand Vijaywarg. The business has expanded rapidly resulting in 3 other branches right here in Hyderabad, despite some unforeseen events in the year 2007. Gokul chat is up and running and people still visit it for it’s unique taste in chat and refreshing varieties of kulfi. “I used to come here when I was studying at Osmania, now I get my kids here to show them where Mumma used to eat chat everyday and the reason why she’s put on 5 kilos”, says Samira when asked about since when she has been visiting Gokul chat. We had the Samosa chat, Pav bhaji, Panipuri, and Dahipuri as well. And it definitely ‘paisa vasool’price was nominal and the taste, fantastic. Both the cold chats as well as the hot chats were absolutely delicious. The sweet curd accommodating every dish was the cherry on top. Everyone in Hyderabad has heard about Gokul chat and the hype is real, it’s just as good as it gets. Koti Main Road, OppKoti Women’s College, Koti, Gandhi Nagar, BadiChowdi, Kachiguda, Hyderabad. GOVIND DOSA Plain dosa or Masala dosa is just plain-boring, and people have been contriving ways to come up with something new, Govind Dosa is one such place that has caught the eye of people because of their unique taste, and unique variety of South Indian dishes like dosa and idly. Their speciality and bestselling dish happens to be ‘govinddosa’ which is dosa batter topped off with upma and spices. Most of the dosas are prepared including this step. ‘Butter idly’ is another one of their specialities, soft idlys topped off with butter, paired with spicy coconut chutney and seasoned with ‘karampoddi’ (a type of red coloured powder paired with south Indian dishes). Every bite was heavenly, the warm idlys; dripping with butter seemed to melt in your mouth; it was perfectly balanced and quite heavy. Cheese and dosa? who knew right? another one of Govind’s bestselling dish is ‘Pizza dosa’, and what’s interesting about this dish is that it exhibits qualities of a dosa and a pizza as well. The regular dosa batter is spread out on their tawa, then they add upma, masala (spices) and spread it throughout the base, to this they add vegetables, cheese and let it bubble, just like a pizza is baked. Not only does this taste heavenly, one dosa is filling sometimes for two. Govind only have their branches in Hyderabad, their first branch was opened near Charminar 30 years ago and the ‘govinddosa’ has been famous since then, they easily prepare more than 1000 dosa’s a day and are available on Swiggy. They also provide services like ‘all India catering’ and have catering services in Dubai as well as Bangkok. The secret to their yummy dosas they use good quality batter. They have a mixed crowd; families, children, teenagers, all present to enjoy the ‘govinddosa’ that has a varied taste and is priced moderately. Head there to have a fun time. 8-2-309/7/1, Banjara Hills Road Number 14, Phase 1, Nandi Nagar, GS Nagar, Hyderabad. Ph : 9866636665

PIZZA DEN “Pizza with pineapple?” strange we thought, but then again, the whole place was filled with people who had at least one pizza in their hand that showcased this strange combination. As strange as it sounds it was just as delectable. Pizza Den is in Sindhi Colony, it is a small place with a lot of bustle and movement. It is always crowded right from their opening time (at 5pm) and sometimes you’ll have to jostle a bit to put your order through, nevertheless every bite of their specialities is worth the wait. We tasted their ‘Desi Masala pizza’ and ‘Spicy Paneer pizza’; which happen to be two of their bestselling items, biting into the soft cheese with a crust that was just the right amount of crispy made us feel right at home, no matter which flavour the pizza, there was a hint of ‘desi’ in it.The ‘Hot and Spicy Mexican pizza’ left us wanting for more. We don’t compromise on the quality; all our ingredients are fresh.” Says Mr. Neeraj, the owner when asked about what makes Pizza Den special and better than all the other pizza joints out there. Pizza Den is famous not only for its brilliant pizzas but for its wide variety of soft serves and ice cream sundaes as well. We had the ‘Fruit and Nut sundae’, which was a perfect blend of vanilla ice cream, fruits, and dry fruits packed with flavours like raspberry and mango. This is one of their bestselling ice creams. We had ‘Black forest fantasy’ as well, which is chocolate ice cream sitting on top of vanilla cake topped off with chocolate sauce and chocolate sprinkles. Both the ice creams were rich and flavoursome. You see people of all age groups chatting around, giggling, and enjoying their delicious pizza. Pizza Den is strictly vegetarian and they don’t believe in home delivery. So, grab your friends and head there to try something new, fresh and tasty! SHARADA’S FAST FOOD CENTER We Indians savour ‘desi Chinese’, it is Chinese food but with an Indian twist. Sharada’s fast food centre is a ‘Chinese bandi’ (a street food stall) located in Banjara Hills. A small stall located at the corner of the road with college going students storming the place. As we took a bite of their schezuwan chicken fried rice and their crispy chicken (both their specialities) we were transported to another world. The, crispy chicken was a combination of crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The seasoning was done just right and balanced out the whole dish. The fried rice was appetizing and the Chicken 65 was also very good. “We’ve come all the way from Miyapur to have their chicken fried rice, it is delicious, I don’t know what it is they put in the food, but it tastes much better than all the Chinese bandis out there”, says Rajkumar one of their loyal customers. “The chicken they put into the food is really soft, and it actually tastes like chicken, they put less Maida and more chicken, and the quantity of the food is perfect. If you’re on a budget and crave some delicious ‘desi Chinese’, this is the place you need to head to” says Irfan when asked about what he thinks makes Sharada’s special. The place is run by P Mallesh and when asked about what makes them better than all the bandis out there he simply replies by saying “We don’t compromise on the quality, everything is prepared fresh and in a hygienic manner”. Well we expect nothing less from them. 345/A, Venkateswara Colony, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.

“Our speciality is that everything is prepared at home, the quality of the meat is pure. All the spices added are made at home and the blend of the spices is authentic.” Bade miyan kababs was started in 1956, by Mr. Ismail, and the name ‘Bade Miyan’ came into being when Indira Gandhi tasted their kebabs and called him “Bade Miyan” (a sign of respect given to elder brothers while calling out their name). The name just stuck and so did the taste of the kebabs in heart of every Hyderabadi. “We’ve also fed the honourable chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy as well, we cater at a lot of parties and we’ve catered to a lot of prominent people”, says Mr Syed Bashith when asked about Bade Miyan. Their speciality is ‘Pathar Ka Ghosht’ which is an authentic Hyderabadi dish. Mutton cooked on a stone slab; which takes around 2 hours to get heated up. It is cooked with pure ghee and beautiful home-blend spices. It tasted just wondrous; the mint chutney accommodating the soft pieces of mutton was the right balance of sweet, spicy and sour (It also helps in digestion as told to us by the chef ). The mutton was soft and melted at the first bite, no matter how much you’ve eaten you will never be satisfied. “This is one of the best pathar ka ghosht I have eaten, and I have eaten this dish at 5-star restaurants as well. The taste of the kebabs at Bade Miyan is truly Hyderabadi”, says Akshit when asked about how his food was. Bade miyan’s ‘Seekh kebabs’ and ‘Chicken biryani’ are their bestselling dish. They’re available for delivery at Zomato and Swiggy as well. Opposite Kun United Hyundai, P & T Officers Colony, Lakdikapul, Hyderabad. Ph : 040 23323047

SOFREHH

CUISINE

‘Sofrehh’ is the combined efforts of Arash Mehdi, Farheen Mehdi and Abdul Moiz. And summing up about the place in one line, they make you feel like you’ve gone to visit family over the summer. They are incredible hosts and go out of their way to form a personal connection, and they genuinely want to get to know you better; all this while munching on their delectable Persian spread. They have a small curated Persian menu, and every item on that card is phenomenal, small menu to be consistent with quality. Sofrehh kickstarted at the Food truck festival on the 4th of march. Both Farheen and Arash didn’t expect to sell out by 10pm, when they had prepared food to last until 11pm. Like most people they needed a break from the corporate world and wanted to rekindle with their roots, so they used their mom’s recipes and opened a food truck as it was new and different. “From the cooks, the electrician and the fabricator everyone’s been really kind and reliable; Sofrehh is definitely the outcome of combined efforts of everyone”, says Farheen. We tried the kubideh sandwich and my oh my, never have we tasted a sandwich this stupendous, the mutton was juicy and tender and melts right in your mouth. Probably one of the best sandwiches we’ve ever had. We tried the cutty murg sandwich as well, it was just as phenomenal. They’re also trying to bring the cold sandwich culture back, with their chicken sandwich. “This is one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. I don’t prefer veg food, but their veg falafel is so good, you can’t help but fall in love with veg food”, says Amish. Sofrehh is in an alley in Jubliee hills. The ambience just feels special, with lights hung up and small chairs with cushions laid out. Its both, a romantic setting as well as a casual one. Head there with your special someone or your family. Farheen and Arash will make you feel right at home and treat you with their authentic Persian food. 789, Jubilee Hills 36. Ph: 9100007861

AUTO EXPRESS - HOTDOGS Auto Express have around 8 outlets here in the city, it was started in the year 2015 and are famous for their hot dogs with an Indian twist. Their menu is small, and their vision is to make global fast food affordable to Indian customers. As much as we have been exposed to the concept of hot dogs on the large screen and silver screens, auto express brings this concept to life and makes it more accepting for the Indian audience by incorporating Indian flavours which blend perfectly with this rather foreign concept. We tried their ‘Mini HotDog’ and ‘The HotDog’, both their classic and best-selling dishes. The first bite was an explosion of flavours; Indian and continental as well. The sauces create magic and are a tangy, sweet and spicy companion to the chicken sausage and bread. The bread is baked at the manufacturing unit of Auto Express located in Bapuji Nagar. The chicken sausages are flown down from Bangalore; where other Auto Express units are located as well. They focus mainly on non-vegetarian concepts, but they have incorporated vegetarian concepts into their menu as well. They also have sides like ‘French Fries’ and ‘Mozzarella Sticks’. Their preparation is hygienic, and they make use of gloves through the entire process. The staff is friendly and will make sure that you are satisfied and alter your order according to your needs. TRENDS TO DITCH Fashion trends that you need to let-go because clearly we have had enough of those. While things went belly-up in pretty much every other arena, at least we had nice fashion pieces in 2017. But as they say all good things must end to make room for even better things, here are 8 trends we expect you can fondly say so long, farewell – until next time.

Millennial Pink From sneakers to cookware to restaurants to blazers, this dusty blush colour was everywhere. We need a break.

While this one is out here is the new colour that’s in these days Ultraviolet – Pantone’s colour of the year.

Chokers Taylor Swift championed the choker trend, encouraging people to constrict their necks with bits of ribbon or show laces. The 90’s nostalgia was fun until it wasn’t.

Fur Slides Everyone loved these when they first hit the scene last year. But now that we’ve seen them everywhere, it’s time to say bye to them.

42 JUNE, 2018 - TULIP

Swap yours for a different statement making piece of jewellery, like mixed- metal drop hoops.

This year is all about the Kitten heel.

FASHION Off-Shoulder necklines Much as this shape flatters the neck and shoulders, the time has come to unglue your arms from your sides. You can go for the single shoulder which is still cool. Also this year checks and plaid are going to be in.

Bomber Jacket We have had enough of bomber jackets – they’ve just run their course for the time being. The outwear mood has shifted to sharper, more tailored shapes, such as the trench coat or oversize tweed blazer.

Fanny Packs This retro accessory surely had its time to shine over the past year But its time we say goodbye to them.

This year grab more structured and elegant handbag shape in slightly larger size.

Comically Distressed Denim There are jeans with subtle tear at the knee, and there are jeans that look like they’ve been run through a wood chipper.

Lace-up Corsets Last year it was all about corset belts. We couldn’t go without seeing at least one lace-up corset belt on the street of fashion week. This accessory did have characters and worked flawlessly with every outfit but like all belts styles come and go.

How about a nice straight-leg, cuffed style jeans to replace with.

This year try investing in a classic wide belt in a variety of colours. Extra points if you colour coordinate this accessory perfectly to the rest of your outfit.

JEANS

f o tion

u l o v E

- By Amrusha Mannava

Almost everyone owns a pair of blue jeans. This versatile piece of clothing has evolved constantly over the years but has never gone out of fashion. People from every walk of life own a pair of jeans; from a businessman to a Hollywood star. It is a complex piece of clothing and bonds with the wearer; like they say as a pair of jeans grows older, they get better. But this piece of clothing was not just a simple piece of clothing, it comes from a convoluted background, which consists of history and entrepreneurial spirit. Let’s track it down from where it all begins. Levi Strauss was a Bavarian immigrant and a merchant based in San Francisco in the year 1853. During this time the miners and farmers needed rigid clothing for work as their cotton trousers were wearing out. They needed tough clothes that could take their workload. Strauss’s client Jacob Davis approached him, with the idea of ‘jeans’, a sturdy cloth with copper rivets at the sides, as well as the pockets to hold the jeans together. This idea was a great hit as people could work comfortably without the fear of wearing their pants out. However, during this time these pants weren’t even called jeans, they were called ‘overalls’, women at this time didn’t wear them and nor were they considered to be a fashionable item. The main fabric of the garment is ‘denim’, robust cotton twill fabric was used, to which a few drops of natural indigo colour was added to give colour to this fabric. These days the colour is synthetically produced. Jeans became a mainstream item, not until the 1930’s. The cowboy style influenced Hollywood and became a trend by 1950’s. it was in the 1960’s that Strauss replaced the term ‘overalls’ with the term ‘jeans’. The French word ‘Gênes’ is said to have inspired the word ‘jeans’. In the 1930’s Vogue magazine featured a model on their cover wearing blue jeans, hinting that perhaps this piece of clothing could be a fashion revelation.

1950s

Pop culture, as well as youth icons, embraced jeans during 1950s, they were considered to be rebellious clothing and gave somewhat a ‘bad boy’ charm. Black jeans, light washes and brands like Levi’s, Lee Cooper, Wrangler were the most popular ones. Women did not even start wearing denim by then, denim was introduced for women later when Levi’s Strauss launched a commercial with women showcasing denim. ” Wearing jeans soon became a ‘statement’, and the lifestyle of the original wearers like coal miners and cowboys helped create the rugged identity we are all familiar with today. With movie stars like James Dean popularizing the look on silver screen, blue jeans entered the fashion world by the 50’s.” says Charumathy Murali, designer at Spykar jeans.

FASHION

1960s

Jeans were an American creation. Indians’ pride themselves on ‘sarees’, Japanese pride themselves for their ‘kimono’, Americans’ have ‘jeans’. They started the whole fad, and this fad hasn’t stopped growing ever since. 1960s was the age of the hippie jeans when, America followed the youthful culture, this was the age of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and elaborate fashion. Jeans were a big hit! Jeans were embroidered, rhinestones were sewed on, with colorful flares at the bottom. In 1960s blue jeans became a part of women’s fashion. “The 60s and 70s saw jeans define the casual look of the youth revolution. Bell bottoms came with beads and embroidery and helped define The Summer of Love.” Insights from Charumathy Murali, designer at Spykar jeans.

1970s

This was the age of bell bottoms and colourful belts. Bell bottoms came in all sizes, colours and prints. Bell bottoms were long enough to reach the floor and as the name suggests, they were wide open in the bottom and were body-hugging from the waist till the thighs. American sailors were one of the first people who sported this fashion during the 19th century, it is believed that bell bottoms made it easier for them to work during sailing. Denim skirts and denim vests were two other denim items that gained popularity during the 1970’s. People like Cher, Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger all made television appearances wearing bell bottoms which popularised this trend furthermore. Music played an important role in popularising this trend, ABBA and bands like Slade wore bell bottoms while performing or while accepting awards on stage.

1980s Now the 80s was not the time for the people who liked to keep it simple. It was the time for funky colours, weird and elaborate trends, colourful eye makeup, a lot of accessorising and high-waisted jeans. High-waisted jeans were designed to sit almost 2-3 inches above the navel. They were in fashion until the hip-hop culture came into play during 1990’s. Teenagers used to wear a lot of high waisted pants from Levi’s during the 80’s. This was the age of designer denim, now big brands like ‘Calvin Klein’ had started manufacturing their own line of jeans.

FASHION

1990s

Tv shows or daily soap operas lent a major hand in popularising certain types of jeans. For instance, the TV show Friends popularised ‘mom jeans’ and that was the very trend during the 90’s. Mom jeans looked like you had borrowed a pair of jeans from your mother just like the name suggests. It was baggy and loose and was either mid-rise or high waisted. Tv shows like ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ also played a major role in popularising these types of jeans. Everyone preferred the loose fit over the tight one. high-waisted shorts were also popular during this age.

2000s

This was the age of low-rise jeans. Now, these jeans turned the tables as they were 3 inches below the navel just like the opposite of high waisted jeans. Actresses and singers like Britneys’ Spears popularised these jeans and started a frenzy of them. ” The clean minimalism of the 90s came next, followed by the baggy denim excesses of the 2000s. In the last decade or so, denim has undergone multiple reinventions, growing into a massive industry spread across borders and occupying a unique place in everyone’s wardrobe. With innovative washes and experiments, the world of denim has expanded to become more than just a fashion staple. It has become a way of life.” Says Charumathy Murali. Many leading brands manufacture jeans on a large scale now; specially curated styles, with prices of all ranges available. Spykar is one of those brands that launch and come up with new ideas’ every season to keep their customers’ engaged and wanting more.

2010-NOW Fun Fact

Presently Gucci’s “Genius Jeans” are cited as the world’s most expensive pair by Guinness World Records. As I have already mentioned early in this post that even Gucci’s standard pair of jeans is available at minimum price of $600. The brand had made a stir back in 1998, when they debuted their distressed and ripped jeans at an astonishing price for $3,134. Today the fashion house is certainly the denim world, when it comes to high end jeans. 46 JUNE, 2018 - TULIP

(The age of revival and new ideas’) The past 20 years can easily be called the age of revival as it is a complex mixture of all the trends that have been in fashion since the 50’s, the rebirth of several denim trends and the birth of new trends. “Denim trends today have taken a life of their own, changing each season. With the Internet and ease of travel increasing, cultures and identities are merging. Patches, embroidery and patterns give classic blue jeans a global twist. There is an increased value placed on customization, DIY surface details and unique washes. Brands like Spykar are tapping into the young creative energy by releasing an exclusive range of denim featuring one-of-a-kind doodles and artsy jeans says Charumathy Murali.

FASHION

Skinny Fit Jeans Skinny fit jeans were first introduced to men’s fashion in 2008, then they were introduced to women’s fashion in the 2010’s. They continued to enter mainstream fashion till 2011. This trend has been so popularised that skinny fit jeans need to be a wardrobe essential in the current day scenario.

The revival of mom jeans birth of dad jeans

The trend was brought back to life by people of all ages. Men started wearing dad jeans which are just a baggier version jean and avoided the whole skinny fit fad. Women showcased the same; a baggier version of jeans.

The distressed/ torn jeans revelation.

During the heavy metal era i.e. in 1980’s-1990’s people witnessed the beginning of torn jeans, but this trend soon died down, it did not cause a buzz, until it swept across like a Tsunami during the 2010’s. Every actor, every singer, every teenager owned a pair of ripped jeans. It is a must-have. First popularised in women fashion and then slowly entering the world of men’s fashion. Ripped jeans are a revelation.

The revival of overalls, shorts and jackets.

Denim overalls paired with crop tops or tight-fitting tee shirts became one of the popular fad’s recently, presenting the 60’s vibes mixed with the latest fashion. Fads like the denim jacket, denim shorts, distressed denim shorts became popular very recently as well. Denim is an ever-evolving, ever-morphing material, and people come up with new ways of transforming this woven coloured yarn in different materials. This American invention will keep changing in due course of time but will never go out of style.

The revival of high-waist

Skinny fit jeans with a high waist; a mixture of the present and the revival of the 80’s fashion. This trend was stunning.

Bootleg jeans

Bootleg jeans were influenced by the trousers worn by sailors, they were popular during the 1980’s. They were designed to be straight from the waist till the bottom, and just tad bit wider at the ankles. Bootleg jeans are popularly worn by men, they aren’t a part of women’s fashion, they were rarely sported by women.

MANEPALLY JEWELLERS

Creating Happy Memories Since 1890

Manepally Jewellers has been one of the quintessential stores in the jewellery industry. They have been mastering the craft of jewellery making since 5 generations. Their quality is exemplary, and they focus on delivering what the customer requires they make sure that jewellery shopping is hassle-free, and a memorable experience. In conversation with Manepally Murali Krishna (the Managing Director of Manepally Jewellers) - As told to Amrusha Mannava How was Manepally jewellers started? We are the 5th generation right now. It was started in 1890 and is a 138 years old legacy. The first store was a very small one in Secunderabad; it had the olden day’s pillow seating with the old structure. I completed my graduation and did courses related to gemmology after which my younger brother and I took over, in the year 1995, and upgraded it to a showroom. It was started by Manepally Raghavalu and at that time money lending was the activity happening in the jewellery industry, nothing was readily available for the customer to purchase. All the pieces were customised according to the requirement of the customer and during the time of the Nizams we manufactured a lot of gemrelated jewellery, a lot of Burmish rubies and the collection differed drastically from today’s collection.

Do you see a change in the gold scenario back then and now? In the present scenario, I would say there are two types of people in the gold industry; people who don’t compromise on the quality for even 0.01 percent, who give proper assurance with proper buyback value. There are some others who take the back door where no proper bills are given to the customer and provide no proper buyback policy. But I’m sure that the consumers are very wise today and are well informed and educated about the way things work. This has been the scenario since the beginning; the consumer has gotten smarter now. What makes Manepally better than all the jewellery stores out there? Manepally always comes up with new concepts for the customers; we ensure that we upgrade with new concepts. We make sure we have something for every generation, as your grandparents your parents as well as you will shop for jewellery. Our in-house team considers everyones choices, and all the designs are unique you won’t find them anywhere else but here at Manepally. We also ensure that the quality and all the standards while making the jewellery are met. The customer must not feel deprived and is completely satisfied as we maintain transparency and all the 11 stages of making the jewellery are 50 JUNE, 2018 - TULIP

given equal importance. We have established in the customer’s mind that they can buy our jewellery without having any second thoughts. All the costing and branding is done accurately, and we don’t have a middleman to take the profits. The value given to the customers is accurate; we give the perfect value for money to the customer. We give all the customers personal attention. We customise things as per the customer requirements and any small changes that they desire to be made are done. There is always a 100 percent buyback policy which makes buying jewellery from Manepally hassle-free for the customer. What is the difference between small jewellery shops and big branded jewellery shops like Manepally? This is very interesting if someone wishes to stay honest they can, but there are people who do a lot of fraud when it comes to quality. Manepally has values and ethics, this is the only way we do business, otherwise, we don’t mind not doing it at all. What happens majorly in small organisations; the prices, the lifestyle, the salaries are escalating but the number of customers they serve is limited and they charge these limited customers more. They compromise on the quality and give you an old value, you think you’re making a wiser choice as you’re in an illusion that you’re saving money but instead you lose out on the quality. Do you have specific target customers? We serve to all kinds of people be it the middle class or upper-middleclass people. Our major target customers are wedding shoppers, we make sure we have all the 14-15 items required by the bride during weddings at one place so that they can shop for everything at one stop and are satisfied with what they’ve bought. We make sure everyone’s ideas blend and this circle doesn’t end from wedding jewellery to shopping for the next generation (children) this cycle keeps moving forward and the bond between us and the customers is maintained. As the training wheels come off there is a nervous and frightened feeling looming over, you’re well aware of the fact that you’re old enough to ride by yourself; aware but not ready. Scared stiff you take your first pedal and then another and maybe you succeed maybe you fall but it all contributes to the process of learning and mastering balance. Cycling is one of the first memorable activities you learn as a kid, leaving behind memories to cherish and reminisce about. The countless summers spent in riding away, showing off your new cycle, tumbling down a slope and bruising yourself; everyone has these childhood memories to treasure. Cycling is not just for recreation; it has taken many forms and has proved to be extremely helpful throughout the years. Cycling has helped people commute to places, it is a recognized sport, and is used as a fitness tool. It holds historical and political importance as well. There have been several claims about who invented the cycle, these claims date back to the time of Da Vinci but the last verifiable claim for a practically used bicycle was made by Baron Karl Von Drais, a civil servant in Germany, in 1817. It started off with the world of sports. Cycles were used for racing and then they entered the world of recreation, now there are about 1 billion cycles throughout the world.

4. Cycling helps mental well-being. Cycling helps in releasing endorphins which serve as mood boosters. Endorphins leave us feeling good and happy. 5. Cycling helps in sleeping better. 6. Studies have proven that cycling leads to increased brain health.

Bicycles became very popular among the elite and the middle class in Europe and North America. Women used it to commute everywhere, it became symbolic for them as during those times women felt oppressed and bicycles were a symbol of independence and freedom. Since women could not cycle comfortably with the fashion that was in play during those times, changes were brought to their dresses which also helped relieve women from the shackles of corsets and long dresses.

7. The immune system is improved with regular cycling.

In the modern-day scenario, the fast-growing world hasn’t been able to accommodate bicycles for a long time. Two wheelers are soon shifted to four-wheelers and to keep up with today’s needs and to drive in traffic is a task. Fitness enthusiasts and passionate bicyclers are the only people that keep this sport from dying. In India cycling is a dying activity and is associated with status quo as well; you either notice children or people belonging to the lower classes making use of cycles.

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS 1. Cycling is an eco-friendly option, it aides in avoiding polluting and exposing ourselves to pollution. It is a hassle-free and eco-friendly way of commuting from one place to another.

There are downfalls, but people are also making active efforts from keeping this sport from dying. Cycling is a healthy and convenient way of commuting and it comes with a lot of benefits as well. BENEFITS Cycling has ample number of benefits. Some of the reasons are obvious, HEALTH BENEFITS 1. Cycling is good for your heart. Statistics show that cycling for at least 20 kilometres a week reduces coronary diseases by 50 percent. 2. It helps in reducing weight and maximizing muscle movements. 3. A number of diseases related to lungs can be solved by cycling. It also helps avoid cancer. 52 JUNE, 2018 - TULIP

8. There is an increase of blood flow, and the skin feels radiant and glowing after cycling. 9. It helps you keep active and isn’t a burden; it feels lighter than all the equipment used in gyms. 10. It boosts digestive health and helps in making people look younger.

2. It helps in conserving fossil fuels and is easy on the pocket.

Hyderabad has taken the initiative to promote cycling on a large scale and has seen tremendous success in its projects. There are cycling rides and campaigns in and around the city involving a large number of casual and competitive cyclists. Hyderabad Bicycling Club is the leading factor in this movement and has taken this initiative to a very large scale consisting of a larger number of people, precisely, a membership of 7,500 people. This non-profit organisation was founded in 2007 by Krishna Vadi and today, it is the World’s Largest Cycling Club online overtaking the Denver Front Range Cycling Club, USA. The Hyderabad Bicycling Club which has its bike station at Gachibowli and Necklace Road organises several campaigns, events and meetups that contain a group of casual riders who meet for the fun and fitness aspect of cycling as well as a group of competitive cyclists who train for the state, national and international events vigorously. Address: Necklace Road, Near Sanjeevaiah Park. Ph: 081257 31043 It is one of the best cardio exercises that are at the same time, very enjoyable. Initially, we used to have 10-20 km rides but now we also have long distance rides and also have members joining us from outside Hyderabad. We have grown a lot over the years. Abhinandan Malhotra, Member of HBC.

To encourage people to ride their bikes to work or their preferred destinations instead of relying on pollutant – emitting machines that add to the harm caused to the environment, the Hyderabad Bicycling Club has come up with eSmart Bike Mobility Private Limited which was introduced alongside the Hyderabad Metro. All the bicycles are imported from Germany and are advanced, equipped with gears and GPS system. HBC aims to increase the number of stations and bikes eventually as time goes by. A passenger can use the SmartBike by downloading a rent app or by owning a rent card. Website: www.smartbikemobility.com Ph: 040-7127-9008

Cykul, one of India’s leading public bike sharing companies too has launched bicycles service at a few Metro stations. They have extended the service of the app which they launched last year in association with DLF, to the Hyderabad Metro Rail. This app aids its users to rent out cycles and has enabled a number of people to embrace cycling as a means for good health, active lifestyle, and a convenient transit option. They have deployed 1000 cycles which can be availed from the Cykul Cycle Stations.

Krishnan Ganesan says, “Music has been my passion since childhood and I have been associated with it in some form or the other for a very long time. Started off with Sai bhajans and Nakara sankeerthanas and later grew up listening to legends like Ilayaraja and Rahman. This gives people some nostalgic moments and also revives the lost sound in our regions. Niraval is a unique concept, now a dream come true for me and the other band members and we enjoy the fact the people have started appreciating this concept in the city”. This highly talented group has plenty of other hobbies and passions. India’s Grand Canyon Everyone is familiar with the USA’s Grand Canyon, one of the seven wonders of the National World. But did you know that there is a hidden Grand Canyon in India as well in Hyderabad? Well, there is and it is nothing less than breathtaking. A quick getaway from the city’s buzz and a nice short trip. If you’re wondering whether it’s true let me tell you it is. In the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, there is a small village in the Kadapa district named Gandikota and it is home to India’s hidden Grand Canyon. Carved by the Penna River that snakes its way through the Erramala Ranges in Andhra Pradesh, this canyon is more than a thousand years old. The best part is that the untouched and unexploited natural beauty blends seamlessly with the area’s rich historical past. The gorge is known for its spectacular views and scenery, but the area also offers several other beautiful attractions that are worth checking out. One main spot to explore is the 13th century Gandikota Fort, a red sandstone structure with intricate carvings, protected by a height of eight kilometres and a gorge that stands at over 300 feet above the Penna River. The view from the top is very beautiful. And when the sun goes down the gorge becomes even more eye-catching with beautiful colour palette covering its cluster rocks. Watch the Penna River peacefully flow through this brilliant stone gorge that’s an artwork in itself and you’ll realise why it’s called the Grand Canyon of Indian. Climbing up those treacherous rocks can be a task in itself, but the amazing views once you reach the top are worth it. Sit on top of the rocks and watch birds fly over the river now and then while the sun starts setting in the backdrop, and you trip to Gandikota will be nothing short of heavenly. Adjacent to Gandikota Fort lies an extremely beautiful lake that is believed to have been established by Sri Krishnadevaraya using water 60 JUNE, 2018 - TULIP

from the Penna River. One can sit on the banks of this lake on their trip to Gandikota and admire the canvas of nature before him/her-calm and clear water in the front, Erramala hills in the backdrop, pretty hues in painted in the sky, and many native and migratory birds peeping out of the forest every now and then. While you are here you shall find the remnants of the two spectacular

FEATURE Gandikota has everything for everyone, even the adventure hungry. As Gandikota is slowly stepping out and coming under the tourism spotlight, various travel ventures are standing to take hold in the village. You can engage in number of adventure activities like rock climbing, kayaking, rappelling, trekking and you can also set up a camp and look at the stars in the night while you are keeping yourself warm beside the camp fire. Where to stay: Haritha Hotel by AP tourism. How to get there: By road which is 360 km from Hyderabad.

temples near the village, the Madhavaraya temple and Raghunathaswamy temple. The Raghunathswamy temple, made of red granite is a complex system of pillars, hallways, and corridors with an air of mystery about them, since the temple has no idol of gods and goddesses. The Madhavaraya temple on the other hand is a fascinating play of architecture with many sculptures of Hindu gods and everyday rituals of common people carved on the pillars and walls of the temple. It is an excellent display of art that has life and culture of the lost kingdom that’s preserved on the granite walls. Also, the Jamia Masjid of Gandikota Fort bewitches the travellers with its simple, yet elegant Islamic architecture and the main prayer hall where thousands once converged in heartfelt prayers. From the top of the entrance one can spot the Gopuram of Madhavaraya temple located close by. Both stand beside each other in utter peace and harmony.

INTERIOR

Give Your Space a Vintage Touch

- By Rishika Pagadala

Vintage Interior design is tricky. It’s easy to see why some people would want to re-create the feel of elegance that is synonymous with homes of the past; it’s all too easy for a design to come off looking like it belongs in grandma’s house. This is the kind of interior where striking the right balance is crucial. Choose well-made antiques

Antiques are the backbone of any vintage home. Regardless of which decade is your personal favourite, they are the key pieces that help cement the vintage feel in your design. Their unique sense of history will transport the viewers back in that time in a way that newer creations simply can’t match. Just because a piece is older doesn’t mean it’s worthy of being included in your design. If you are going to include an antique, it needs to be in decent – if not excellent condition. If you don’t think that the piece will stand up to daily wear and tear, keep looking for sturdier options like: Weight: Heaviness is often tells us whether the piece was made from real, natural materials rather than a more modern, mass-produced variation. Sturdy joints: Give special attention to whether the joints feel secure. If they feel shaky, look into the cause. A loose nail can be replaced, but wood rot is not as easy to fix. Rust or other discoloration: While a little rust or fading due to light exposure can be dealt with, too much may not be worth the restoration.

Make them your focal point

When you find antiques that fit the bill, make them your focal point of the room. Putting a true antique into this role will help set the tone for the rest of your design. Furniture is the perfect candidate. Since, the furniture allows to take a centre stage in a room because it helps make the function of the space crystal clear. Vintage dining table, accent chair or bed frame can be taken in the centre stage. Larger decorative items are also a solid choice. You may want to think about searching for a larger mirror or piece 62 JUNE, 2018 - TULIP

of wall art to help carry out the room. Well-kept rugs are a good option to keep in mind.

INTERIOR

Add in Vintage –inspired details

Antiques are lovely, it’s unrealistic to assume you will build the entire room around them. Also doing so may end up making the space feel like more of a relic than a nod to the styles of days gone by. The best vintage designs are the ones inspired by tradition, yet modern. You should be careful about choosing the right vintage pieces, you can be sure that they will fit into a modern home. You can opt for vintage lighting like chandeliers or table lamps or reserve a section of the room for a tea table set. Vintage designs encompasses melancholy, romance and originality, so take the risk and play around with it and check what works best for the room you have.

Copy vintage patterns and colours

Colour and pattern are great ways to really drive home that vintage aesthetic. Pastel colours are excellent because they work together with most furniture and decoration pieces. There’s nothing like some polka dots to transport you instantly back to the 1950s or rich, saturated reds to harken back to the Victorian era. It’s not hard to see why people love vintage interior design. There’s something so appealing about paying homage to the elegant aesthetics of the past.

number of people believe the more expensive or high-end the product, the better it’ll work. Maybe it’s true or maybe it isn’t, but it’s possible to achieve glamorous, red-carpet ready look with drugstore beauty products as well! We’ve listed down our top 8 drugstore beauty products for you to try out!

- By Rabica Zulfiqar

Wet n Wild MegaGlo Highlighting Powder The MegaGlow highlighters which come in two shades, Precious Petals and Crown of my Canopy, with Precious Petals being the lighter of the two, took the world by storm! They were only limited edition but due to their huge success, these have been made permanent. These highlighters have a smooth metallic sheen and give you “glow from within” look when blended properly.

Pooja Tuteja, Counsellor The Wet n Wild Highlighter in the shade Precious Petals is currently my favourite beauty product. It gives a blinding glow and is quite long lasting. A little product goes a long way and it’s simply stunning to look at!

L’Oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation The thin consistency and texture make it easy to spread and blend onto the skin. It does not turn cakey and it is easy to build. The coverage is great to cover all imperfections, hyperpigmentation and post-acne scars. The finish is soft matte with a hint of radiance which is considerably better than other dewy/glow foundations which make the skin oily by the end of the day.

MAYBELLINE Volum’ Express The Falsies Mascara “It’s not mascara, it’s false lash glam in a tube, instantly!” This claim by Maybelline couldn’t be truer. The mascara not only adds volume but also boosts the length of your lashes instantly!

Adeena Aziz, Student

Pranjal Bhangadia, HR manager

The Lakme 9 to 5 lipstick is my go-to drugstore beauty product. It stays true to its name as the lipstick shade is really long lasting. The texture is smooth and creamy that glides easily and doesn’t dry out the lips.

Make-up Forever HD- Micro Perfecting Primer This product is one of the best primers for dry skin. Only a tiny amount is needed to cover the whole face and it has an oil-free base that works to give the skin a smooth texture. It helps control excessive drying up of naturally dry skin and helps retain the makeup for much longer. It can also be mixed with a concealer to make a good eyeshadow base.

My favourite drugstore beauty product is undoubtedly the Lakme CC cream! It’s my go-to product because it looks totally natural and blends like a dream. It gives a smooth, airbrush finish and doesn’t look cakey at all. It has also got SPF which is great plus point!

Colorbar All-Matte Eyeliner – Matte Black The All-Matte Eyeliner is the perfect deep matte black shade which will make your smokey eye makeup look even better. It dries within 20 seconds and lasts for more than 12 hours!

Maybelline Instant age rewind concealer The rave over this concealer wasn’t for nothing. It not only blends easily because of its thin consistency and light texture but also doesn’t look cakey or settle into lines under the eyes. It is long-lasting and provides great coverage! Why is Hyderabad’s metro rail ‘hatke’

H

Hyderabad’s metro rail is surely one of a kind. The honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself inaugurated the metro line along with our honourable Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao on 29th November 2018. The project was taken up by one of the largest technology, engineering, construction and manufacturing companies; Larson & Toubro (L&T). Not only is it the largest and most efficient, it is also one of the most respected companies in India’s private sector. Larson & Toubro is the only company that could have taken on this challenge; building the metro rail in a city like Hyderabad and execute it so wonderfully. Their world-class quality and concern for people aided in attaining the biggest metro rail project in the country taken up in the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.

To begin with, Hyderabad’s metro rail is an engineering marvel and here’s why 1) The Ameerpet interchange station is one of the largest stations in the country, built over 2 lakh sq. ft of land.

10) Noise and air pollution of the city is expected to go down as Hyderabad metro is a safe eco-friendly mode of travel.

2) There are 4 exits to every station with foot over bridges connecting people from one end of the road to another end.

11) There are about 550 security personnel that include private security service agencies working under uniformed police officers during their shifts.

3) There are functioning elevators as well as escalators at all the stations, which makes travelling easy and hassle-free. 4) The length of the railway line is about 73kilometres with stations located at every kilometre. 5) Stations are focused at areas that witness heavy traffic, commercial areas, hubs and workplaces, as the main idea of the metro rail was to ensure that people reach their workplaces on time and bypass the traffic that commuters experience. 6) The metro will cover high density traffic corridors, between Miyapur and LB Nagar (which has 24 stations), JBS and Falaknuma (which has 16 stations), Nagole and Shilparamam (which has 23 stations). 7) The metro stations were carefully planned and parking area at some strategic stations are put up which makes it easy for people to commute to their specific destination. They also went an extra mile by only using government land to create parking areas. 8) The stations also provide facilities like renting motorcycles, bikes, and bicycles. 9) A minimum fare of Rs 10 for a distance of 2 kilometres and a maximum fare of Rs 60 for a distance of more than 26 kilometres is the fixed rate.

12) The trains run from 6 am to 10 pm with a maximum speed of 80 kmph, but the officials leave no stone unturned when it comes to customer satisfaction as they decided that during IPL match days, the trains will function till 12:30 am, at stations like Uppal Stadium and NGRI, as they wouldn’t want cricket fans to miss out on their match and help ease the traffic caused during the matches. 13) The metro rail faced numerous challenges, but officials made sure that demolition was kept at a minimum and very little inconvenience was caused. The Telangana government and the Hyderabad metro rail have shown us again and again that they care about people, their safety and the development of the state.

TRAVEL We weren’t expecting a big room considering the fact that it was a boutique hotel, but to our surprise we stepped into a spacious room which was a welcome surprise. The room has a theme of black and white that created a soothing contrast and in addition to it was a splash of blue to add some color. It had a queen size bed with comfortable mattress and soft pillows, a sofa with round table and lounge chair facing television, just beside the huge glass doors that led to a cute and compact balcony that overlooked the street below and also gave a view of the port with ships leaving and arriving. The royal wedding; nothing but a testiment of love

The beautiful wedding ceremony of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry took place on the 19thMay 2018. The wedding was nothing but a stunner; but everyone knows it was more than just a wedding, for ample number of reasons. it was a symbolic and powerful ceremony that broke many upheld and out-dated traditions of the British monarchy. Meghan Markle is a powerful woman, with strong beliefs and of an African-American origin. She also happens to be a divorcee and older than Prince Harry, but all these facts are irrelevant in front of the power of love, and the need for change. The ceremony contained a lot of firsts like the first African American minister to perform at a royal wedding; Bishop Michael Curry’s sermon. It also consisted of an African American gospel choir singing“Stand by Me” by John Lennon, a tribute to the love of Harry and Meghan, and to her roots, about the enslavement of men and women in Georgia. A modern royal wedding with forward thinking is just what the world needed.

ta retires Barcelona unbeated, ines Barcelona has already set new records for the longest unbeaten run (41 games) in the history of La Liga, and for the most games unbeaten at the start of a season (34). The run started after a loss away from home to Malaga on April 8 of last year. If Barcelona can extend the run over the four games remaining in this 2018 campaign, then they will become the first Spanish team to go undefeated in a 38-game La Liga season. The last team to go unbeaten through an entire top-flight season in Spain was Real Madrid in 1932 but back then the season comprised only 18 games and the league just 10 teams. Although the team did face a loss in some manner, by bidding their beloved captain adieu. Everyone was teary eyed at Camp Nou. Despite signing a lifetime contract, on 27 April 2018, Iniesta announced he would be leaving Barcelona by the end of the season.[58] He made his 674th and final appearance for Barcelona on 20 May, in the final league match of the season, a 1–0 home victory over Real Sociedad, as Barcelona celebrated the victory of their 25th league and 30th Copa del Rey title; he came off in the 81st minute for Paco Alcácer.[59]

MOVIES Movie Reviews

Raazi Raazi is utterly serious in its treatment of the idea of a weaponised Kashmiri girl who offers her body in service of her nation. Alia Bhatt delivers a compelling and impressive central performance as a spy who betrays her family; there is no hand-wringing sentimentality or obvious flag waving scenes. The film’s title refers to a woman who is both willing and secretive. Raazi is an adaptation of Harinder S Sikka’s Calling Sehmat, in which a 20 year old Kashmiri woman inherits her father’s duties. Sehmat Khan’s father, Haidayat Khan, is a prosperous Kashmiri businessman who has been using his trade contacts with Pakistani Army officers to collect information for India’s Research and Analysis Wing. The movie’s screenplay, by Megha Gulzar and Bhavani Iyer, makes few significant alterations to the book. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music lends credibility to the 70’s backdrop. The songs evoke patriotism without tipping over into nationalism, primarily enhanced by Gulzar’s lyrics. This movie is must watch.

Deadpool 2 Wade Wilson aka Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), the snarky superhero seeks purpose and sense of belonging for a change. He finds it in defending a 14-year-old mutant from the wrath of a powerful man from future – Cable (Josh Brolin). But can the foul-mouthed mercenary who doesn’t wish to elude death, achieve this feat alone? Deadpool 2 is more violent than the first movie. It’s also way filthier, magnificently tone-deafand utterly relentless in the grimy path that it has chosen to walk. Audaciously crafted and cleverly written, Deadpool 2 has the ability to end the Avengers’ reign at the box office. Credit goes to the writers for ensuring that the constant wisecracks, digs at other superheroes or pop culture references, don’t distract a viewer from the story’s emotional core and its protagonist’s moral ambiguity. The actor-writer surpasses his own 2016 outing with this smashing sequel that has its heart and humour in the right place.

Bharat Ane Nenu Bharat Ane Nenu is another political drama filled with the usual Tollywood spectacle involving, goons, bad guys, catchy songs, a larger than life hero and a romantic angle. Bharat (Mahesh Babu) is raised in London by his uncle since the death of his mother at a tender age. After completing his studies and graduation he is clueless as to what his next step should be. The sudden death of his father, who is also the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, results in political panic and turmoil. The party chief Varadarajan (Prakash Raj), urges Bharat to take his father’s place as the Chief Minister. Hence forth Bharat’s political career begins where he makes attempts to amend existing policies and rules. Unlike other movies this movie doesn’t involve political mind games, but a show of physical strength. Bharat develops numerous rivals; some in his own party and fights every one of them physically. He fights, corrupt politicians, goons and tries to hold his feet firm on the ground. There is also a romantic angle with Vasumathi (Kiara Advani) who portrays Bharat’s girlfriend. The climax is weak, but this young CM keeps us engaged throughout the movie. The director Kortala Siva has done a great job at managing the script. Mahesh Babu’s and Prakash Raj’s acting is commendable. Kiara Advani doesn’t play much of a role. The movie is completely fictional and cannot be compared to the current political scenario.

TAROT

ARIES March 21 - April 19

From the 5th until the 19th Mercury transits its home sign of Gemini which is in your third house of communication and the mind. Clarity and perception are very sharp now. These resources will serve you well with family issues this month. Be patient with your burgeoning innovative ideas. They will see the light of day but let the Universe help you with the timing of their implementation. Be here now! It is vacation time, so unwind a bit. New friends may offer fresh insight. A shift in energy at the solstice helps you to feel closer to that future dream.

TAURUS April 20 - May 20

Forecast For MAY 2018

CANCER June 21 - July 22

Saturn, the lesson bringer of the zodiac, normally indicates a time for introspection, focus and discipline with respect to developing who we want to be. This month Saturn reaches the middle degrees of your birth sign and thereby provides an opportunity to get some perspective on your progress in these matters over the last year. In addition dynamic, innovative Mars inspires us to action and stirs our creative passion through the 23rd. You may be inspired to go back into your shell for respite and safety but consider the ramifications if you do. Communications, teaching or writing are generally strong now. This is a particularly good time to connect, network and make important new friends and associations but be cautious about romance. Promote yourself or advertise your business.

During this month the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Saturn take up occupancy in your first three houses of identity, values and the mind. It is a rich time to explore what makes you tick and what you want. Challenge yourself. There may be a hiccup of unbullish self-doubt early on and even a little reticence about reaching beyond your safety zone. On your path, however, there is no going back so embrace the new currents. Creative energy is strong this month and giving full expression to it will be a steadying influence. Go shopping and buy an inspiring book. Chat up friends and keep them informed about what’s important to you now. You may find a good sounding board and a great friend.

GEMINI May 21 - June 20

It’s all about feeling, passion and possibility this month but don’t be alarmed intelligent one. It’s really an awesome opportunity to re-balance your sometimes overused right brain and underappreciated left brain. Take action to step out of your safety zone a little bit. Roll with the flow. Step out of responsibility mode a little and stand in your joy. Ask how you see yourself becoming freer to be who you want to be in career and relationship. You may feel there are some new talents or skills to learn or bring into what you already do. Plant some of those seeds now. The Sun will oppose Pluto in your relationship house on the 12th. Use this time to understand why that less-than-charming Mr Hyde sometimes pops out in relationships when you were really trying your best to show your intelligent Dr Jekyll. This could be a key month for breakthrough and clarity in a relationship. Trust your perceptions. Inspire others… they will really appreciate you for it!

VIRGO August 23 - September 22

The benefic planet Jupiter rolls through your sun sign until September. For now, that means the energy of expansion abounds. Keep these energies well harnessed and in balance. Keep your perspective. What are your most important priorities and goals? This is the best time to practice the art of conscious intention and thereby let go of some of those encumbering control issues. What do want to manifest? Remember that January 20 - February 18 the practice of intention presumes that there is a Universal Retrograde Neptune spends the month smack dab in the middle of your sun sign. intention that is the guiding creative force of the Universe. Your ruling planet is Venus which is the highlight of the planetary show this month. Energy should be pulsing through your veins when retrograde Venus moves across the face of the Sun on the 8th. Insight and inspiration will be sparked. Retrograde means that we are reconsidering ideas or going back over old territory we visited just a couple months earlier. The best way to handle a retrograde period is to go within rather than try to make sense out of unsettled external circumstances. This is a period for the Soul and not the mind. Venus is retrograde in your 9th house of philosophy and higher teachings. Maybe you are searching for answers to some of your deepest questions or looking for the right path for you. Keep yourself inspired. Things have been spacey or uncertain recently. Let that be okay. God does move in mysterious ways sometimes but you can rest assured She won’t keep you in the mist too much longer. Career will likely emerge as an area of focus after Venus changes from retrograde to forward motion at the end of the month.

December 22 - January 19 Healer asteroid Chiron completes its transit of your sun sign over the next nine months and won’t return there for almost 50 years. These nine months are the perfect gestation period for creating a more healthy relationship with your sense of responsibility. Practice easing up on yourself in this department particularly in the area of relationships. The ruler of your sun sign is Saturn which is transiting through your relationships house. Put yourself on notice… I am not responsible for his or her happiness. Focus on breaking through this month around your fear of letting others down. It is an old story that has outlived its usefulness. This month’s mantra: I take responsibility to dream my undreamed dreams. Lots of clarity and healing particularly from the 6th to the 19th.

It is time to hone in on creative fulfilment through a career. Your energy and talents need to be expressed more fully and opportunities in this area are coming into focus. You might feel you are bursting at the seams for some creative shift, but don’t take any shortcuts. Be as clear as you can be about your goals and what you need for cellular level creative satisfaction. If you can be clear about what you want, then what you want will come to you. This is a good time for emphasis on purification, health and service to others. You may feel like indulging yourself by buying something nice. Use some discretion and go for it! Use your relationships to express the depth, breadth and truth of who you are. Don’t hold back.

You are on a roll as the month begins. Things will be heating up as time goes on. The energy of transformation abounds and we all know that is appealing to scorpions. If you could sit down at a drafting table and re-design who you are, what would the new you look like? Think about it while this deliciously intense energy abounds but don’t set yourself up to become a martyr to your own idealism and expectations. Your optimism is on an uptick. Friends are looking for you to be the life of the party. This could be a month for profound illumination. Balance fun and inspiration. If a new path or direction is what you are looking for then give them a chance. Listen to the whispers.

Wow! Benevolent Jupiter remains in your career house through September. Healer asteroid Chiron occupies your second house of talents and money. Spiritual Neptune occupies your third house of the mind. Things are building toward a crescendo later this year. This month gives you an opportunity to clear away thoughts that might block your optimism and confidence about those approaching changes. Feelings and passions may get stirred up but clarity and wisdom will win the day. Friends might disappoint you but maybe it is a message about being among those who are more supportive of you. Vacation or rest and relaxation are a requirement this month.

As the month begins there is some tension between your fourth house of needs/emotions and your tenth house of career/showing up to others. Take a look at how you put the needs and expectations of others above your own needs. Take notes, keep a diary, communicate, be honest with yourself. Get things out in the open. The sky is not going to fall if you define your life on your terms! Be with the family. Keep the company of likeminded, inspiring friends. Start a new, self-nurturing discipline like a yoga class or membership at the gym. TULIP - JUNE, 2018 87
