S

Sona Reddy, founder of the Room Therapy is an ardent nature and dog lover, a new mom, architect and an entrepreneur. She is originally from Bangalore but is almost a Hyderabadi now. She loves to cook and wishes that she could run a bakery some day!

Tell us a little about how did your career unfold? I studied architecture and I’ve been practicing since I graduated. The entrepreneurial debut happened just two years ago by chance. How has the journey been in this field? It has been great. I get to meet so many new people every day. How did Room Therapy happen? I worked and lived in LA for a while. I lived by the beach in a small one bed room apartment. I was spoiled for choice when it came to decorating my space. I visited flea markets, thrift stores, decor stores, IKEA and random finds. I moved from LA to Hyderabad once I was married. I was trying to do up my own house here and realized we 24 JUNE, 2016 - TULIP

didn’t have many options. Hence, the store happened. Your morning, evening and weekend routine for the day? I work out; hang out with my 1 year old and the dogs. The end of the day is some quite time with my husband. Weekend is to unwind, cook and hang out with friends Where did you find inspiration to design such a beautiful store? It just came together. My father in law helped a lot with the construction. The design came about with all the years of travel and inspirations from the places I have seen and been to.

LIFESTYLE

How do you manage your work and personal life? I either work or chill at home. I don’t go out much. So, that works out very well for me. If I’m not doing both - I like to travel. That’s all I have time for. Room Therapy is one of the most unique stores in the city, each and every product is something rare to find. How do you maintain the uniqueness? If I like a product and if I feel i’ll put it in my house, I usually pick it up and luckily for me - it seems to be working well. How is your usual day at work? Usually starts with a site, office time with the team and sites again. It is more outdoors than indoors. What is your next step, for Room Therapy? No step. I’m content with one store. I will continue to update the style and products

Rapid fire 3 things you don’t leave home without? Water, phone & gum

Your strength? No idea

Where would you take your next holiday to? Vietnam

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? Hopefully, build a house away from the city and breathe some fresh air.

Soundest advice you have received by far? To hang around with my baby as much as I can - because they grow too fast.

Quick advice for young and budding entrepreneurs? Follow your heart - the money will come anyways.

One thing that cheers you up immediately? My dogs

Your motivation and why? My family. They didn’t and don’t let me lose hope ever.

Your idea of a perfect day? On a beach, read a book, play some volley ball, swim and eat great food. Ah!

Your favorite cuisine? I love food. Any kind!

LIFESTYLE Pallavi is spontaneous and really passionate about what she does where as Shitiz is a fun loving guy who loves to go out, explore and eat the best food possible. They let us know more about their beautiful bond.

Tell us more about where you grew and your life growing up? Shitiz: I am an army kid, born in Dehradun and brought up all over the country. Life growing up was full of adventures. Pallavi: I grew up in Delhi. Growing up was fun with my siblings and then my parents made sure that I get the best of everything they could get me. I owe a lot to my parents for what I am today. How did your career unfold? Shitiz: I work at Tech Mahindra, currently heading strategic initiatives for Healthcare Life sciences vertical. While growing up, my ambitions changed every week - I owe it to the exposure given to me by my parents. After graduating from the College of Business studies, DU, I joined Protiviti as a consultant. Within a year, I ended up being a cofounder of an education Venture. Somewhere in between, I got the urge to do MBA and landed in ISB, Hyderabad. Post ISB, I ended up in the Healthcare sector followed by IT services in Healthcare and Life sciences. Pallavi: I am a full time fashion and lifestyle blogger. It wasn’t something planned; I mean I am a doctor and have my masters in public health. I even worked as an epidemiologist for almost 3 years in the corporate sector. But, I have always been a person with a creative bent of mind and a strong inclination to fashion and style, so the blog happened! Was it a love marriage or arranged- share a memory of when you first met? Shitiz: It started off as an arranged marriage and ended up becoming a love marriage. The first time I met Pallavi, I thought to myself if I can talk to her over nothing for 3 hours straight, I can have conversations with her about anything as we spend our lives together. Pallavi: We have been married for over 3 years now. It was an arranged marriage, so our first meeting was typical. Parents were chatting outside, us in my room and talking about likes, dislikes, aspirations etc not realizing the conversation lasted for almost 3 hours and our parents had to interrupt as it was way past dinner time. We sort of bonded then from our very first conversation. Coming to blog life- what is your husband’s role in it? Pallavi: He made the website; he handles the technical part of the website even now. Plus he’s the one who clicks me for most of my posts. Further, he’s also my business and financial consultant you can say. What is one thing you would change about her? Shitiz: Absolutely nothing! Pallavi: His snoring; I am a light sleeper. In such a busy life, what do you think helps to keep you both bonded? Shitiz: Sharing each other’s thoughts, ambitions, passions and expectations from life. Pallavi: I think besides just understanding each other really well (yes, you’ll be surprised it’s like we can read each other’s mind), we both are ambitious & support each other’s aspirations. I mean it’s great to be in love of course but in a relationship, there’s more to love. You need a companion & he’s a great companion for life. Further, we make sure we communicate anything and everything, it’s very important!

26 JUNE, 2016 - TULIP

What according to you is the most essential element for a modern couple to keep up their marriage in such a fast paced world? Shitiz: Being true to yourselves and each other. Pallavi: Communication and mutual respect for personal and professional aspirations. And, of course, once in a while a good no-work vacation/romantic getaway for some quality couple time. If you had to do a makeover of your spouse, what would you choose? Shitiz: Honestly! I just love her for her personality. Looks are important and she is as pretty as they come but the first word she used for me on our second date was that I am a Sapiosexual. And it’s her intelligence which keeps me hooked. Pallavi: I think, I pretty much gave his wardrobe a full makeover after we got married; he’s always been a geek never fussing too much over clothes. So, you know!

LIFESTYLE

Pallavi + Shitiz Ruhail Special Bonding Rapid fire What do you like most about him/her? Shitiz: Her spirit! Pallavi: His ability to handle any situation, patiently that too with a very microscopic view on it. Next holiday destination you would like to go... Shitiz: Maldives Pallavi: Maldives One place in Hyderabad you chill the most? Shitiz: Starbucks Pallavi: Can’t really pick one place!

What’s next- where do you imagine yourself 3 years from now on a Monday? Shitiz: Don’t know! Didn’t imagine myself in Hyderabad in 2013! Didn’t imagine myself in ISB in 2010! Didn’t imagine myself as an entrepreneur in 2007! Pallavi: I don’t know, enjoying my life! Describe your typical day from morning to how you end it at night. Shitiz: Start at 8:00 am. In office till 10:00pm usually. Dinner with Pallavi followed by a nice movie and hit the sack by 1:30am. Pallavi: I get up and first thing I do is check my notifications and emails. Then, I make tea for him and fix us a breakfast and prep for lunch. Shitiz leaves for work and then I work over my blog. Could be drafting blogposts, calls, email exchanges and so on. This goes on till Shitiz is back from work, then I cook dinner, we talk about our day, watch some tv and head to the bed. Weekends are more chilled except for shooting for blog posts and going out for drinks, dinners or movies.

Fashion to you is… Shitiz: what you are comfortable and confident in. Pallavi: Passion 2 things no one know about him/her? Shitiz: Love for Punjabi Hip Hop and her drive & ambition to be the best. Pallavi: At times, he helps me pick an outfit if we are going out and I can’t figure out anything. COVER STORY

Nyra Banerjee

Modern Glamour Star

Fuelled by her blazing passion, Nyra Banerjee unleashes on Fashion, Films and Favorites. The young actress is a household name in the Tollywood movie industry. In an exclusive chat, Nyra Banerjee shares more on what she is up to… How would you describe yourself as an individual? Well! I’m a patient, tolerant, jovial and a determined person by nature. My name N-natural, Y-yummilicious, R-ravishing, A- ambrosia describes me so well. How has the journey been so far? Well, when I begun it was just a passion for arts and pocket money. I’m a law graduate and I really don’t know when my passion turned into profession. The journey has been fulfilling, achieving and has further fueled my hunger for learning. Tel us about your upcoming projects? I have a Kannada film, “Tiger” slated to release in July end this year. I am also preparing for my next Bollywood project. What is the Favorite part of your work? Oh, it’s everything! It starts off with the research where you figure out who are you and what you are today. It helps you to sketch your characterization for the film. Acting is a bit easy, if, you know, and merge the given characterization with your own nature. It’s a mix of the character you play and your own tadka. Once you’re into the skin of the character, acting becomes all about reacting. The post production as an Assistant director was really exciting, especially in my recent project AZHAR, as I always wanted to know the technical part. I’m the kind of person who is very well aware of the work done. So, post release I only hunt for negative reviews to improve for my next. I’m a complete director’s actor. But, at times I do take my stand when I’m not convinced. How do you manage to balance your social personal and professional life in such a busy schedule? It’s all about time management, interests and mood of the moment. Things automatically fit in where you want them to, when you want it badly enough. What gets you excited, what do you like or are passionate about apart from acting? Ummm, I can just dance anytime, anywhere and on any music. I have learnt classical and ball room forms of dancing. Belly dancing is fun and contemporary is something I want to try my hands on. I love weight training and swimming. I have been passionate about singing and also 28 JUNE, 2016 - TULIP

want it to be my alternative career. Lot of stars these days are coming up with their own labels, or collaborating with Brand/designers. If you were to get into such collaboration, which designer/label/brand would you like to team up your ideas with? I have had just one dream! When I make a lot of money, I want to make a law firm with all my law friends working together. But of course, I would love to own a designer brand in my name too! You travel so much for work. What would be your favorite destination to shoot so far and why? I simply loved London, though I worked on a lot of foreign locations, UK makes me feel safe and home and I’m yet to explore much more there. Share 4 things that you would like to learn/change/do more this year? Jewel Galore Hyderabad, often called the city of pearls has always adorned us with magnificent jewelry. From the time of the Nizams until now, where statement necklaces are in vogue, Hyderabad has never failed to catch up on the latest trends. Here are few of the city’s best jewelers giving us their insight and knowledge about jewelry.

Krishna Pearls & Jewelers Being in their 3rd decade of manufacturing jewelry, the managing director, Devender Kumar, of Krishna Pearls tells us that ‘Jewelry isn’t a new subject for them’. He takes pride in the fact that the business has been running since the time of the Nizams and has passed down to generations. He gives us a few points on pearls. What do you specialize in? We are in-house manufacturers, hence, we try our best to specialize in all types of jewelry. Krishna Jewelers being a big family business carries vast knowledge and therefore we use this to our advantage and create the best possible jewelry in all of Hyderabad. Since Krishna Jewelers were in this business for a long time, let’s talk about Hyderabad’s specialty – pearls. Which type of pearls are people often attracted to? Sausi and Tahiti pearls is what is trending nowadays and we have a lot of products that showcase these pearls in different designs. Which is the most expensive type of pearls? That would be Basara pearls as it originates from the Persian Gulf. Least expensive type of pearls? Freshwater pearls Anything you would like to add about your store? Well! The thing that sets Krishna Jewelers apart from everyone else is the fact that we have 18 stores and are available all over the city. Other than that, we like to keep up with the trends which make us competitive and up-to-date. Greenlands Road, Panjagutta, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh 500082 Contact: 040 6663 5755

Krsala Jewelers At Krsala Jewelers we spoke to Bunty Bajaj, the store owner, who seemed extremely enthusiastic about jewelry which truly showed in all her designs. How many years has the store been running? We are in our tenth year of running. This October, we will be celebrating our 10th anniversary, for which we have some grand plans. What do you specialize in? We specialize in Jadau and diamond jewelry. We have always given special attention to our designs and put in an extra effort, to always provide to our customers with something unique. What in your collection is an all time people’s favorite? At Krsala, we don’t repeat designs. So, every piece is unique and one of a kind. However there was a Jadau necklace that I had designed, with a carved 150 carat emerald pendant that caught a lot of eyes while it was on display. What can you say is trending now? I think two articles of jewelry that have been gaining popularity are the hathphool and the mathapati. They are extremely fashionable and add a lot of style and drama to any outfit. Mor Jewelers Mor Jewelers was founded by Anand Mor and Pavan Mor 14 years ago to light up Hyderabad with their sparkling gold and diamond jewelery. We sat down with Mr.Pavan Mor and asked him a few questions about his store. by the masters of craftsmanship in which each piece took around 4 years to complete. So, our jewelry is mostly exquisite, exclusive and rare. What is your opinion on the Gold rate? Looking at the near future trend, the gold rate is surely going to increase. There are two reasons for this; one the stock market is very volatile and secondly the U.S. federal reserve did not increase the interest rates and is currently stable. Do you have plans on expanding? We do have plans but we’re keeping our fingers crossed and hoping for the best. Let us see what God has in store. (laughs) What do you specialize in? We specialize in Nakshi, Rosecut and Diamond Jewelry. Apart from this, we have some very old artistic pieces made

Anything you would like to add? We have 28000 and more designer pieces that is only available in our store and around 68 plus designers working for us. We hope to keep doing better and bigger. Manepally Jewelers

Mr. Gopi Krishna Manepally, a very wise and genuine man, is the current owner and chairman of Manepally Jewelers. His great grandfather Mr. Manepally Ragavalli founded the store in 1890 and they have been in the industry ever since. What does your store specialize in? To us, jewelry is not just about buying and selling, it is about creating new products. We take the current trend and create it in our own way. We also have custom made jewelry which you don’t find in most stores. What is your opinion on the gold rate? We can currently see the gold price rising at least by 10%. Looking at the U.S. elections, we can say that internationally all the investments will be transferred from dollars to metal. Being in this industry for so long, what do you have to say to the customers? Always check whether the gold you’re buying is certified from hallmark or not. If it is, then, your gold will be accepted worldwide as a good and genuine quality piece. General Bazaar, Kalasiguda, Telangana 500003 Contact: 040 2781 3209

What is your USP? Well! A lot of your jewelry is made with special technology. We travel worldwide to explore this technology and execute it in our jewelry. We’re also known to have a very good quality in our products. Address: Punjagutta, Ph.no : 040 - 23411816, 040 - 23411817, Hyderabad, Telangana 500032 ; Contact: 098490 14600

CAMPUS BUZZ Sonal Andrews, the director of Integrated Preschool Teachers Training Academy (IPTTA) talks to us about what goes into training teachers to make children’s future, the objectives of the organization and its strategies.

Teach Your Way How did IPTTA happen? Integrated Preschool Teachers Training Academy (IPTTA) is a single stop destination for women who are passionate about dealing with children (aging 0 to 9 yrs.). IPTTA is born out of a passion to create facilitators and to guide the future citizens. We aim to train every individual in the field of early childhood. We started our journey as ETTI trainers. We had been training for almost 6 years when they shut shop suddenly and in a matter of days we took this as an opportunity to start IPTTA. Your vision for IPTTA in the next 5 years? Our vision is to train not only the existing teachers but also home makers, fresh graduate girls and also aspiring preschool owners. In short, all those who are interested in early childhood education and child psychology and women who want to utilize their skills and potential for building the nation by molding young minds. Our vision in the next 5 years would be to reach maximum number of schools in the twin cities and train their teachers and those who are interested in different areas such as art of storytelling, phonics, classroom management skills, etc. We want to cater to every school by providing efficient and well trained pre-primary teachers. We also offer 3 hour modules for constantly upgrading the skills of teachers on various topics through the year. Can you explain about the training course in detail? We are affiliated to the AIECCE, New Delhi - and our diploma (NTT) holders are recognized in India and abroad. We are also affiliated to PPTTC and candidates have the option of obtaining both diplomas by the end of the term. It is a one year course commencing from July/ August and concluding in May/June. Class timings are from Monday thru Friday from 9am – 12 noon (Absolutely Mother Friendly) There are 7 papers for which the theory exam will be held in the month of May/June. Simultaneous hands-on practical training which includes creativity, lesson-planning, observation and readiness ,etc is imparted. There will be about 10--12 workshops during weekdays taken by experts in their respective fields. A typical day at IPTTA includes: Half an hour of theme based interactive instructions; two hours of theory through group discussions and audio-visual media. The last half hour is for Spoken English and communication skills.

Tell us more about the LETT program? Let Every Teacher be Trained (LETT) program was started for existing teachers at schools. We found that most teachers did not have adequate training also had no means for the same. Hence, we came up with a program just for them. (A year program - 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month) Tell us a little about yourself as an individual and your journey? After completing my training in Pathology, I was looking forward to a career in the medical field. However, once my daughter Nakshatra was born, I preferred spending as much time with her as possible. I made a paradigm shift in my career when came across ECE training institute (ETTI) and joined it as I wanted to join my daughter’s school as a teacher. As usual, Destiny had a surprise in store for me. I was made a faculty in the same institute and later promoted as a Coordinator. I also completed my Masters in Psychology (counseling) to equip me better. At around this time, ETTI stopped its training program and I decided to carry forward its legacy. With other committed and experienced colleagues, I took the leap of faith with a renewed zest and started IPTTA in 2013. In my new role as an entrepreneur, my rock of support was my husband, Dr. Ravi Andrews who always believed in my ability and passion to follow my dreams. From Mumbai to Hyderabad and from Hospital to IPTTA sums up my eventful journey so far. What are the new teaching techniques that have been opted for children to understand better? Teaching is like fishing. Just as you use different lures for different fish, you need to use different methods for different learners. Teaching is like a beautiful music where instructional methods are the instruments: When played alone they just make sounds; when played together in harmony, tune and rhythm they produce amazing music. At IPTTA we believe in making our candidates emotionally intelligent. These women can be teachers, freelancers or those who start their own schools. We equip them to be independent for life. Micare Anushree Agarwal: “I have studied fashion design but I always had a strong inclination towards designing jewelry. Whilst interning at L’Officiel India, we used to source fashion jewelry for our cover shoots and fashion editorials. There weren’t many designers who made costume jewelry that wasn’t the typical Indian style, then. I was really inspired by Dannijo and how they started their own jewelry label without any prior experience in the field. I kept coming up with different ideas for jewelry and that sort of planted the seed to start designing my own line.’ Response so far: The response has been beyond great so far. Today, there are so many talented young jewelry designers, so, in order to stand out you have to constantly design something which no one has seen before. We continue to experiment with different techniques and styles to keep all our designs fresh and high in quality. We use Original Swarovski elements and the pieces are micron polished. Luckily the customers have seen and appreciated that. Look out for: ‘We are currently working on our new collection which is to be launched in July. We also keep coming up with smaller capsule collections every 3 months and we just launched our ‘Spring/Summer’ capsule collection’ Shop at: www.shopmicare.com

Meraki Ashni Shah:

‘Jewelry has always been one of my weaknesses! But every time I wanted to buy a piece of fashion jewelry I would find it too expensive or too commonplace. That is what pushed me towards dabbling and making pieces for myself. I would buy beads and stones that would appeal to me when I traveled abroad, string them together with chunky gold chains, use embroidery patches and all sorts of mixed materials to create these pieces for myself. It was all for personal use — but it landed me my first assignment — designing a collection for the Miss Universe India Pageant handled by Sushmita Sen in 2012. So, that’s where it all started. Ever since, it has been all about experimenting with different materials and techniques. ‘ Response so far: It has been an interesting journey so far. Connoisseurs of sophisticated design, aesthetic creations and unique pieces appreciate the effort that goes behind our designing process. What makes my jewelry different is the individuality and uniqueness of each piece. It takes about 2 months to design and conceptualize. Every collection has a theme and a recurring motif. Our latest collection, ‘A Beautiful Chaos’ is inspired by nature and the complexity of its elements. I try to incorporate natural stones, handmade textures, and different plating techniques to give each piece an inimitable character. Making the jewelry lightweight is of prime concern so that the wearer is at utmost comfort when sporting it. It’s definitely not just about throwing a bunch of crystals together and calling it jewelry. Look out for: ‘We’re hoping to work on some interesting collaborations in the future. As of now, the focus is on rolling out the next collection, reaching a wider audience internationally as well and give our customers the best service possible’ Shop at: www.meraki-jewelry.com

With a real sense of grounding in a vast array of product and accessories design, it was followed by packaging and furniture design projects for Titan, Intel and @home-The Home Store. On graduating, I established Swa: a label of India inspired Fashion jewelry, which was handmade assemblages of various Indian influences and techniques. Maithili Kabre Jewelry is a step further in the direction in pursuit of design & realization of exquisite, stand-out jewellery.

Response so far: The response has been great and very encouraging. There are customers who are discerning of quality and design and I am glad for that. We stand out due to our thoughtful eye for design and a far superior finish. Our design has an integrated approach and is not adhoc. The final product is a well orchestrated, visually harmonious product that looks even better when worn. A beautiful object on paper comes to life on a person and that is a success factor for good jewelry. We believe in the power of beauty and strength of personality of a woman who knows her mind. Our collections, are inspired by or express the varied facets of being a woman. We also look upon art movements, science and history to interpret them our way. Look out for: We want to continue exploring the directions within the realm of finely crafted jewelry. We want to offer a superior, well-finished product that is Made in India to our customers. Thathing Gazal and Nupur have practically grown up together. They have very different choices but have some things in common. They love quirky and colorful stuff. “We felt there was a gap in the market. We felt it was important that the product design suited the mood of the consumer when he or she was going to use the product. For example, a passport wallet by Thathing defines how the consumer feels – ‘God knows I need this break or living out of my suitcase’. We decided to take a step forward and create a range of products which are true to their purpose. We were also very keen on making vegetarian products. Hence, one of the unique points of Thathing is that the primary material for all the products so far is Canvas & Faux Leather. It was a conscious decision & we intend to keep it that way”, explains Gazal. Nupur says that, “We are looking at reaching out to more and more people with our products. We also have a lot of interesting products in the pipeline. We are actively working on conceptualizing and creating products that will bring delight to each and every one of our customers. For both of us, having met and interacted with people from multiple cultures growing up has been an inspiration. That access, interaction and exposure has been a brilliant source of inspiration. The response has been positive so far. We have had a lot of people look at our product designs and say ‘Oh! That’s so me!’” The journey right from the start up until now has been exciting and we are sure it’s only going to get better”! Their inspiration for designs is a personalized journey through time; for all the things which have touched their heart and have inspired the soul. Slurps, burps, food and friends What is the funniest question about Ramadan that you were asked by a non-Muslim? Inzemam: The funniest question asked to me was whether I eat food equivalent to the meals skipped during fasting. Isn’t it obvious that a person cannot eat food equal to two meals at a time. Which is your most memorable Eid till date? Hameed: The year 2013! We went to 4 seasons and had sharwama and biryani. While going back home, we messed up with a few people and almost made it to the lock up. (laughs) Your Ootd/ Ootn? Waheed: A classy white or black kurta. What is the most lovable thing about Ramadan? Ibad: Everything about this month is a blessing. I love the way all of us meet every night for taraweeh prayers instead of our usual hangouts. I also love the Dahi Wadas that are made for iftaari during this month. What is the most difficult thing about fasting? Naseer: While fasting, the most difficult thing is to maintain a clean fast. This includes no mocking around, no cursing friends and keeping your mouth shut even if someone bangs your car. How is Eid with you guys different from that of other friends? Imad: Eid with us is very enjoyable. We go for the Eid prayers together in the morning. The night just goes by sitting and talking about how Ramadan got over so quickly. Unlike other friends, we make it a point to have dinner at home instead of partying outside.

What is the funniest question about Ramadan that you were asked by a non-Muslim? Zehra: You don’t eat anything for a whole month? You can’t even swallow your saliva? Can u fast in the night instead of the day? Which was your most memorable Eid till date? Amir: It is going to be this year’s Eid as it is our first Eid after getting married and of course our first Eid with our daughter. Your Ootd/ Ootn? Zehra: It’s definitely going to be something comfortable because we will be visiting many family members and I will have to carry my little one most of the time. I’m also planning on making my daughter wear a similar dress like mine or at least the same color for three of us. What is the most lovable thing about Ramadan? Amir: The most lovable thing about Ramadan is that it is the most holy month of the year. People are more friendly and helpful to each other. There is a higher chance of your prayers getting answered. Not to forget, Ramadan is the month of haleem! What is the most difficult thing about fasting? Zehra: The most difficult thing is to control your anger and frustration. When you are hungry and something annoying happens with you, it is almost impossible to lose your cool. But that’s what Ramadan is about; to abstain yourself not only from food and water but also from arrogance, envy and anger. How is Eid with your baby going to be different from that of others? Amir: This year, our celebration is going to be triple. We have planned an Eid party that is going to have a kids theme. There are going to be a wide variety of cuisines and special snacks for children. I’m sure; it is altogether going to be an amazing feeling to celebrate Eid with our princess.

I have been asked this question so many times! I’d like to stress that Ramadan is merely the name of the holy month and not a synonym for fasting. Which was your most memorable Eid till date? Rahaf: We fast for the entire month; trust me not eating till evening is hard work. So when Eid comes, its memorable every time. It’s like your hard work getting paid off. Plus, getting eidi on the special days makes it even more memorable. Your Ootd/ Ootn? Nabeela: What is the most lovable thing about Ramadan? Afeefa: The sense of pureness. Fasting does not only confine to not eating, its staying away from all bad and evil. When you stay away from evil, your soul purifies. What is the most difficult thing about fasting? Shaima: My metabolism speed rate is equal to the speed of light. Which is why I need to keep eating at intervals to not feel hungry. So yeah, not eating till evening is difficult, at least for me. Also, I become like a tigress with an empty stomach. How is Eid with the Khans different from that of other families? Afreen: Eid with Khans is more about giving and spreading love. We usually celebrate Eid in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Once the Eid prayers are done, we distribute sweets and goodies to children who can’t afford them. A week before Eid, we make goody bags so that it could suffice many children at the Eidgah. Being the reason for someone’s smile is a beautiful feeling.

Dress-up day at the Shirazi house What is the funniest question about Ramadan that you were asked by a nonMuslim? Jalaal: The funniest question asked to me about Ramadan was whether I can eat and drink during fasts. Which is your most memorable Eid till date? Minoo: The Shirazis love to get dressed and Eid is the perfect occasion to do so. I personally design the outfits of all my family members. Year 2012’s Eid is our most memorable Eid till date. We wore and looked our best. The house was filled with laughter and excitement. Your Ootd/ Ootn? Minoo: Outfit of the day would be a hand embroidered salwar kameez for me and a kurta pyjama for my husband. What is the most lovable thing about Ramadan? Jalaal: The thing I love the most about Ramadan Is the Islamic unity and closeness towards Allah. What is the most difficult thing about fasting? Minoo: The most difficult thing is cooking during fasting. All items have to be prepared before evening for the iftaar and it really is difficult to not pop in some delicacy into your mouth while cooking. How is Eid with the Shirazis different from that of other families? Jalaal: The Shirazis Eid is full of peace, togetherness and fun. We celebrate the day in the presence of every family member and make sure it becomes a memorable occasion. 60 JUNE, 2016 - TULIP

FEATURE What is the funniest question about Ramadan that you were asked by a non-Muslim? Sana: Once a friend asked me, do Muslims don’t drink water for one whole month at a stretch? I just couldn’t hold back my laughter.

Sheer Khurma with the Naqvis

Which was your most memorable Eid till date? Shujaat: I would say that last year’s Eid celebration was the best till date as it was our daughter’s first Eid. Your Ootd/ Ootn? Huma: Outfit of the night would be a Pakistani suit with matching Hyderabadi jewelry. What is the most lovable thing about Ramadan? Raffat: For me it would be the sehri and iftaar. The delicacies served during these meals are incomparable. What is the most difficult thing about fasting? Sana: Thirst! Sometimes, it gets really difficult to continue fasting due to the scorching heat. How is Eid with the Naqvis different from that of other families? Shehnaz: The one thing that makes our Eid stand apart from that of others Is the special Naqvi sheer khurma. The ingredients used in the sheer khurma come from our age old ancestors.

Mercedes Benz MLA Class Concept Coupe SUV Mercedes-Benz that unveiled the Concept Coupe SUV at the Beijing Motor Show and its direct preview of the 2016 MLC-Class crossover is expected to arrive sometime this year. With BMW set to rolling out its second crossover coupe, the X4, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are now following suit with their own coupelike crossovers. The Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupe SUV rides on the same platform as the MLA-Class SUV, but the ML-Class’s traditional SUV shape has been swapped out with an exterior that features muscular wings, large wheel arches, huge 22-inch wheels and a high beltline. Mercedes Head of Design, Gorden Wagener, described the concept as Sensual as a coupé – visionary as an SUV.” “The Concept Coupé SUV stands out thanks to its extreme proportions and in doing so interprets our hallmark Mercedes coupé design idiom perfectly. With its superior sportiness it conveys a sense of modern luxury and aesthetic aspirations of sensual clarity”, continues Gorden Wagener. Just like the more recent Mercedes-Benz concept cars, the production version of the Concept Coupe, which is most likely dubbed the MLA Class, is an A-level general purpose light vehicle coupe and will look almost identical to the concept. In fact, Daimler aims to follow the same plan as Audi: The Concept Coupe SUV serves as announcement of a “possible expansion of

the previously uniform SUV off-roader family,” the company says. In the future, there will still be the traditional off-road(-ish) models, which include the GLA, the GLK, and the GL, as well as the M- and G-classes. But, this concept is the first of a complementary “sporty and dynamic on-road line.” So, yeah, sportier, coupe-ier, and less practical versions of the GLK and perhaps the GLA are sure to follow soon.

WELLBEING

Look Good, FeelSpreading Good Smiles

Dr. Vijay Vardhan, a renowned oral and maxilla-facial surgeon clears all your doubts about how surgeries take place and is it safe to go under one. How to take care of your pearly whites and lots more. Can you tell in detail about the surgeries performed and the various types of it? Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a relatively new surgical specialty that specializes in treating many diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and hard & soft tissues of the oral (mouth) and Maxillofacial (facial bones and face) region. How did you find interest in the field of maxillofacial and oral surgeries? I always wanted to become a doctor. I grew up being called as Junior doctor in my family because I’m some where an artist and love creating beautiful things and Maxillofacial surgery is all about creating beautiful faces. Where do you see yourself in the next five years? My goal right now is to expand my services to more areas in Hyderabad. Ultimately, I’d like to expand it further throughout the country and globe. But most importantly, giving high quality and sticking to ethics in my services is my priority. If not a surgeon, what would you choose to be? There is nothing that I can think beyond surgery. I always had a strong desire to become a Surgeon (facial plastic surgeon). But, if you ask me about a hobby, I think I love acting in a play. That is another creative form of art. Tell us about you, upfront as an individual? I am soft spoken and honest to the core. I am a person who is energized by challenges and problems. So, you will see a lot of patients coming to me with long standing diseases and conditions. How do you manage your personal and professional life? Leaving things behind! Most people find it impossible to master this but, it is vital that you leave your personal life at home when you go to work and vice versa. I take a little time for myself amidst all the hectic running around between two lives by playing online chess. What is the most difficult case you have handled by far? Although, each case is a challenge, there are a few that demand much more meticulous planning and attention. One such case is a patient with cleft palate/lip. She was operated several times by many surgeons

in several reputed hospitals and her face got further deteriorated. She was depressed and lost all her hopes. This is the time when I took up the case and reassured her. After meticulous planning, an eight hour long surgery was performed and facial bones were rearranged into the desired position to give an aesthetic face. Post surgery, when the bandages were opened, she and her entire family were in tears out of happiness. And Such moments give me immense satisfaction and joy. Can you educate our readers about having healthy teeth and a good oral hygiene? Face and Mouth are mirrors of general body health. Mouth is the gate way to our body. So, a healthy mouth leads to healthy body. The secret of healthy mouth lies in brushing teeth twice daily (esp. after each meal) and getting a Dental check up done once in every 6 months. Do cosmetics surgeries have adverse effects or any hidden complications? Cosmetic surgery ranks among the top surgical procedures performed worldwide. Although complications are there but these procedures are considered generally safe when performed by qualified and experienced surgeon. There are still risks and these risks can be minimized by following the pre and post surgical instructions diligently. Opened just a few days ago, Wonderla in Hyderabad has already earned love from all across the nation and is the most ‘happening’ place to be for all the teenagers who earlier had to book a flight to another city to get amused at Wonderla. Beautiful infrastructure, most amazing food and the best rides in the world indeed makes it a far- fetched opening and win for all us hyderabadi’s who were desperately awaiting for it to open in our city. After my exams, my friends and I had planned a trip to recently opened Wonderla which was an amazing experience after all. Every ride is built in its own way, me being a very adventurous person; I tried every single ride from Octopus ride, Recoil roller coaster to the water swings. The experience at Wave Pool was the best. Our overall experience at Wonderla was mind blowing. It was worth the money spent and we still had not had enough of the park when we came back. -Rashmi Somani (Past Secretary with JR JCI Club/Student)

What are the summer/monsoon make up trends that everyone must follow. Thumb rule for summer makeup is.. Minimum makeup, use of sunscreen after primer, keep your makeup products in in refrigerator and avoid glossy looks One overhyped make up myth Myth about makeup that has been stretched too long is that usage of more foundation stays long. It’s totally untrue. Makeup can stay as long as required if blended properly and not by over doing it. Skin care routine every woman must follow. CTM... Cleansing, Toning, Moisturizing is the thumb rule for healthy skin What is the right age to take care of your skin for long term sustaining and glow? I suggest every lady should become alert by the time they turn 25, and pick a regular skin care routine that suits their skin. Actually there is no age to feel good. or look good, but the earlier you begin the better for long term. it’s very important to understand that first priority should be about feeling good about yourself and then for the sake of the society. What kind of makeup do you like? I personally prefer flawless look, more towards natural base colour. Your favourite brand in terms of makeup Bobbi Brown, Nyx, eye shadows from Mac and Inglot, Hd foundations of Bobbi Brown, HD blush on’s of Makeover especially in pink and peach are just awesome! Do you think people in Hyderabad are more ready to experiment in terms of looks, and hair style than before? Yes, they are and I am very happy to see that Hyderabadi’s are keenly adopting the latest trends of hairstyling/hair up do’s. How do you keep yourself updated with latest trends and styles? I keep upgrading myself by learning/practicing new methods whether it’s related to makeover or hairstyling. Recently, I have been to the Mac University, London for more advanced course in eye shadow and bridal looks. What is your take on parents pushing their children to glam world in a very small age- like beauty pageants, commercial, shoots? Actually, we should not encourage kids towards more of hairstyling and makeup as their skin is tender. If required, educate them to choose the right professional products... Wella/L’Oreal/Schwarzkopf for hair. Remove makeup ASAP. When they are not in shoot, feed their skin and hair with nutritious and correct diet. One beauty trend that is in vogue? Braids and messy up do’s.

MOVIES Movie Reviews

AZHAR REVIEW: While the younger generation is looking forward to the biopic of captain cool, MS Dhoni, Director Anthony D’souza has set the ball rolling with the release of Azhar, based on the life of one of the most successful and controversial captains of Indian cricket team, Mohammad Azharuddin. However, do not miss the disclaimer that says this is not a biopic but just a story inspired by Azharuddin’s life and has been made for entertainment purposes only. The film revolves around the captain of Indian cricket team of the 1990s, his two wives and the match-fixing scandal that shocked the cricketing world. Starting with a very catchy intro and a winning shot, the film sets the expectations high. In the scene that follows Azhar, played by Emraan Hashmi is accused of matchfixing, banned from playing and all the bad things that can happen to this sportsman, does. While an Emraan Hashmi-starrer rarely misses the bullseye with the music, the songs in Azhar can be called half-decent at best. This is not a typical Hashmi-film in a few other ways too. No, it isn’t a bad thing. The movie keeps you gripped. It is a combination of cricket and Bollywood after all. The writers have done a commendable job penning a few dialogues that hit you at the right place, the right time. Watch it if you too are curious about the story of the once-celebrated captain of the Indian cricket team who only seconds M.S.Dhoni in being the most successful. It will be hard to miss this as one of Hashmi’s better performances. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR REVIEW: Populating the film with so many superheroes, directors Anthony and Joe Russo make Civil War about character and consequence. Spectacular set-pieces and clever one-liners aside, the film allows every single one of its players to have a beat of character development. 19-year-old Tom Holland’s introduction as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man is one of the most charming scenes in the film, and Ant-Man’s place in the pantheon of Marvel’s crimefighters is hilariously established. Even Daniel Bruhl, as the film’s rather underwhelming villain, gets his moment in the sun. Crucially – and here’s where Marvel towers over its DC rivals – there’s real maturity in this story of guilt, revenge, friendship, and loyalty. Civil War, its every frame crammed with multiple heroes, often feels like a big Avengers film, but there’s no question this is Captain America’s journey. Chris Evans, by now virtually inseparable from the character, continues to invest Cap with old-fashioned sincerity and decency, emerging the conscience of these films. Although less urgent than The Winter Soldier, this new outing is undeniably good fun. I’m going with four out of five for Captain America: Civil War. This is how blockbusters should be done. 24 REVIEW: If you’ve watched Vikram K. Kumar’s previous films 13B (Yavarum Nalam) and Manam, then you have a fair idea that the director’s interest lies in culminating a world where fiction-meets-reality. This is layered by some sharp writing and innovative concepts that make the movie-watching experience seem unique. He combines the same template in this year’s most-awaited film, 24, and it works like a cracker! The film is helped by a compelling narrative that pushes the audience into a parallel world, making them go back in time. What would you do if you stumbled upon a timepiece that can not only freeze the present but also rewrite the past? 24 dwells on this very concept. Some parts of the film borrow from the Bollywood films Mr. India and Koi Mil Gaya though. Suriya shines in triple roles. His performance as Mani, Athreya and Sethuraman is superb. However, what keeps you engaged is his performance as the menacing villain, Athreya. It’s not often that the performance of an antagonist carries a film, but Athreya does just that with his terrific act. Although brief, the performance by Nithya Menen is noteworthy too. Samantha and Suriya look good together and the romance sequences are original and funny. Technically the film is superb with top-notch VFX and the stunning visuals (credits to cinematographer Thirunavukarasu). It’s perhaps the one film in recent times that features some brilliant visuals; those that take you to a different world. A.R. Rahman‘s music isn’t quite catchy, but the background score is excellent and adds to the depth of the film.

NEWS EmraanHashmi in Murder 4

Actor Emraan Hashmi says he will star in the fourth part of the popular thriller “Murder” after being a part of the first and second installment. The first part of “Murder”, directed by Anurag Basu, released in 2004 saw Emraan starring opposite Mallika Sherawat. It was a breakthrough film in the “Jannat” actor’s career, who had made his debut in “Footpath”. “’Murder 4’ is on the pipelines, they are working on the script. It is going to happen for sure but I don’t know exactly about when the film will begin,” he says. The 37-year-old actor starred in its sequel, “Murder 2” in 2011 opposite Jacqueline Fernandez. “Murder 3”, however, featured RandeepHooda in the lead. The “HamariAdhuriKahani” star will also return to the horror franchise, “Raaz” with the fourth part of the series scheduled to release this year. “’Raaz 4’ will be a spook fest the way horror films are supposed to be. It will definitely take the horror genre more forward in India.”

Julia Roberts Awes People at the Cannes

With model Carol Gracious walking the ramp with her baby bump, and breaking the fashion stereo-type, one such incident also took place in the Cannes Film Festival. Actress Julia Roberts stepped onto the red carpet at the premiere of Money Monster, the new movie in which she stars with George Clooney directed by Jodie Foster, in a fairly straightforward black gown. When Roberts lifted up the skirt of her Armani Privé gown at Cannes, however, she had a huge surprise waiting underneath. The actress was barefoot. That’s right! Julia Roberts walked a red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival completely barefoot. So how did Julia Roberts manage to evade the stodgy dress code, which technically has yet to change? She did arrive on the red carpet wearing heels, but she appears to have removed them as she made her way into the premiere. Even if she didn’t have to make it past security with bare feet, making it at least part of the way down a Cannes red carpet without shoes is one small step for gender parity in dress codes.

Akhil Behind Vamsi’s Exit

Yes! This is the new angle which has come out in the latest gossip of Vamsi Paidipalli backing out of Akhil’s project. Certain gossip mongers in the industry suggest that it was because of Akhil’s interference that upset Vamsi big time and he left the project mid-way. Going back in time, the same situation happened when Akhil started interfering in the direction of V VVinayak and the result was there to see in the debut film Akhil. Now it seems that the same has been repeated as Akhil wanted to remake the Hindi film and Vamsi was not interested in the same. After repeatedly discussing the same, Akhil was he’ll bent on doing the remake which Vamsi did not like as his last film also a remake. This led to all the discussions and confusion between the two and the ace director silently made an exit from the film. Time and again certain good projects have been put on hold because of issues like this. But this is serious problem for Akhil as his second film is yet to go on floors and looks like his career is in doldrums now.

John Terry offered a new one-year deal

Chelsea captain John Terry has been offered a new one-year deal, the English Premier League club said on Friday. The 35-year-old centre-half, who has spent his entire senior club career with the west London side, is out of contract at the end of the season. In January, Terry who has made more than 700 Chelsea appearances since his debut in October 1998 -- said he would not be extending his time at Stamford Bridge. However, Chelsea countered that a new offer was possible. And on Friday a Chelsea spokesperson said: “(Director) Marina Granovskaia and (chairman) Bruce Buck met with John and his agent this week and offered him a one-year contract extension. “With it coming so late in the season, this is a big decision for John and his family and it is something that they are now considering.”The timing of Chelsea’s statement also appeared to reflect a desire on the part of club officials to avoid interim manager GuusHiddink’s final pre-match press conference on Friday being dominated by questions over Terry’s future.

TULIP - JUNE, 2016 77

TAROT

Forecast For

June 2016 - Tarot reading by Nupur Heda Patil

CANCER

VIRGO

All your efforts from previous months will finally turn into success at the beginning of June. The success will stick with you during the entire month of June and even July. At the end of July you will be on the peak of your professional front. Remember that success also brings duties and responsibility. Nothing is for free; therefore do not expect that things will go by themselves. Be patient, hard-working and inventive. Trust in yourself and in your skills. Do not be afraid to bring a small sacrifice to the altar of your success. Your efforts will be rewarded not only with a praise but also with money.

In the month of June you will be able to achieve everything that you did not manage in the previous months. The fortune has finally found its way to you. You are in the centre of attention and at the beginning of the second half of the month you can enjoy success that will finally come to you. Your efforts from previous months have not remained unnoticed. At the end of the month of June, you can expect a major change. Maybe you will change your post or even your job? Do not be afraid of that and welcome this change with your arms open. You will be more successful than ever and you will be really satisfied.

LEO

LIBRA

You are great and you feel great too! Your good feeling will reflect in everything you will do in June. Do not be afraid to start bigger projects or to arrange an appointment with an important business partner. Do not attempt to make major changes in your professional life. Things will go well at work and you will be successful but a step towards a new position could be a pretty hard one. If you are promoted by your superior, accept it. But, you have to make great efforts to achieve promotion, believe that you may even be worried about your current post.

You are in a perfect shape, not only physically but mainly mentally, emotionally and intellectually. Take the advantage of your potential and develop! Have you ever thought of going back to school? Are you interested in language courses? Start to educate yourselves in June and do not fear anything. If you choose a field or specialization you are really interested in learning will be pretty easy. Be open to new things and do not be afraid to make a step into unknown areas. Your self- education will open new horizons to you and you will be able to find a better job.

TAROT

SCORPIO

PISCES

Angels will stay with Scorpios until August. June will bring success and money to your life. Of course, nothing is for free and you will have to make some effort to achieve professional success. Thanks to your luck things will go easy and without any difficulties. You will have to deal with tricky and complicated problems, too, but you will get an insight at the end of the month and that will accompany you until next few months, which will help you to manage everything with grace. Do not worry and set higher goals than you are used to. You have plenty of energy and space for that!

Angel keeps an eye on the problem-free course of your professional life. It will arouse much more ambitiousness in you and more abilities to learn new things than ever before. The month of June will be a tough one because you will have to make a lot of important decisions. You will manage everything without any problem, and if you listen to your inner voice you can never make a wrong decision. You will be a popular companion and your skills will exceed the scope of your working position. Your superiors will watch your initiative during the whole month and at the end of the month you can expect a great change.

SAGITTARIUS

ARIES

A difficult situation at work will make you rethink your qualifications. Due to problems that occur, you will be non-violently forced to increase your education, attend new courses or learn another foreign language. Be glad for that! You would never take the courage to do so yourself, even though you have thought about it many times. Problems will be solved anyhow and you will manage to set things right. As a bonus you will get a better education and a great feeling of yourself. Although at the beginning everything looks horrible; do not get upset and do not panic! Try to keep a cool mind and confidence in yourself. Despite its gloomy beginning and course, the month of June will have a happy climax at its end when your efforts and work will be appreciated by your superiors.

The energy that circulates in your whole body will bring you a new and fresh insight of things. This will help you to see things from a different perspective and it will open new, unknown horizons. Thanks to that you will be able to find new solutions, procedures and improvements. You will be original and your superiors will soon become aware of that and they will appreciate it. The month, June, is a great opportunity to develop your skills, abilities and knowledge. Work on yourself and you will see that in the second half of the month you will feel a huge difference in how other people perceive you.

(born October 23 - November 21)

(born November 22 - December 21)

CAPRICORN

(born December 22 - January 19) You are absolutely fine and completely on top of things. You are sure about yourself and your own abilities. You are convinced about the possibility to succeed and you are determined to achieve everything. And this is exactly what you need to take into consideration in June. Of course you can peacefully float through the month and enjoy the peace and quietness that surround you – or sometimes even flood you. You can also focus on what you have always wanted to achieve but for some reason you have never realized it. It is only up to you to choose the way. Nothing will change your comfort and tranquility.

AQUARIUS

(born January 20 - February 18) You must accept the fact that your professional growth will cease in June. The good news is that nothing will get worse. Things will just remain as they were before, which is, considering the beginning of the month of June, a good news. However, this does not mean that you should stop trying, or for half a month completely stop going to work. On the contrary, you will have to try much harder and give much better performances than ever. Despite all this you will be relatively satisfied at work. Endure. Times will be better.

(born February 19 - March 20)

(born March 21 - April 19)

TAURUS

(born April 20 - May 20) The greatest thing that the month June will bring is the irreplaceable feeling of safety, emotional peace and everlasting optimism. Make use of that and consolidate your position at work as much as possible. You will become friends with everybody who are against you. There will be no doubt that you are worth helping - because you are always willing to help and give advice. You will probably not be promoted at work this month but one thing is certain, you will create a friendly and enjoyable work environment.

GEMINI

(born May 21 - June 20) In the month of June, you will have to rethink your abilities and qualities. Do not lose self-confidence and face the new challenge as proudly as in the past. Caution! Do not try to be cleverer than your superior! Be careful to not to look too confident or even arrogant. Try to be more humble and learn to listen to others. Do not underestimate any task – even the smallest one. Your success will come soon. Sometimes it is not the best idea to get your own way at any price. It is better to adjust to the environment and wait for the right moment to stand out.
