Tell us your story related to your career. How did Radio Mirchi happen? I considered myself an accidental RJ; it was a curious quirk of fate. There wasn’t a set intention; I just went with the flow. Although, over time I realised that in life, there are no accidents. How has the journey been in this field? Exciting, intimidating, rewarding and surprising. That last one is the best part, (the surprising part). I am never bored & everyday there is always something to learn or someone new to meet! I’ve also discovered that life is not a race, but a marathon. I’m savouring the journey, without obsessing too much about the end destination. How is your usual day at work? Never a dull moment! Hectic and exhilarating at the same time! I begin my day at 4:30 am everyday; well except Sunday. And after a quick workout I’m ready to begin my show by 7:00 am. Five hours is the total duration on most days and then I’m working on the next day’s show or doing an interview or preparing for an event or discovering something new about our city- food/ place/ people. I want to say I’m exhausted, but it’s just round the clock fun and most days I don’t realise that work is work! Tell us something about your personal life? I adore my dog Diego. When I’m home, most of my time revolves around him. I’ve started training in western classical music and have started learning Bengali because life really should always be about learning something
new all the time. I recently brought home a house plant; named him George, and honestly, he has a fighting chance at survival only because of my mom’s secret intervention. I try to live my life as guilt-free as possible, but our Societal conditioning runs deep. I absolutely love to eat and I think my family and friends think it could be a borderline obsession. Any tips for upcoming Radio presenters? Yes! The world is full of people trying to ape others. Just be your original self and try to keep it as real as possible. Faking it might work in certain cases, but it’s not a very feasible idea for the long-term. What do u love most about your job? The interaction! I absolutely love to talk to people, make new friends and I realised that this entire city is my gang, my people. Recently a lady came up to me at a coffee shop and just enveloped me in a bear hug and it hit me that the feeling is mutual. It’s not just in my head. I belong to Hyderabad and Hyderabad belongs to me. How did you come up with your famous “good morning good morning”? It was born out of nervousness. The first time I went live, I was talking to another radio presenter. He wished me good morning; in my nervousness I repeated it twice. It sounded good. I went with it!
Rapid Fire What was the last lie you told someone? My mom- about my tattoo. That the one I got was a temporary one, to see if I like it. It didn’t work. But it was a lie. Are you a morning person or a night person? Used to be an absolute night person and now call it occupational hazard, but even on holidays I’m up early, all bright and chirpy. Favourite movie quote? Here’s lookin’ at you Kid! Radio interactions or face to face conversations? Both. Love interacting. Period. Medium doesn’t matter. When hearts connect, it’s magic anywhere . One habit of yourself that you’d like to change? I never back down in an argument. I’m ok to apologise if im wrong, but if I’m right, then God help the other person. I need to learn to exercise more restraint. Next holiday destination? Hopefully the mountains really soon! Himachal side.

CUISINE
“My journey of cooking and catering to happy tummies started in Hyderabad in 1990, 29 years ago. I originally hail from Antwerp in Belgium and growing up I’ve seen my mother make all Indian snacks since they were not easily available. This is what aroused the interest in me. When I came to India post marriage, I felt like that’s where my interest lies and I should start something of my own. I started off with making two varieties of samosas, aloo and kheema, which are now very famous in Hyderabad. Perhaps I am the only one in Hyderabad making those authentic samosas to date. My experience has been a roller coaster and very enriching. I’ve had my share of successes and failures. Every failure only inspired me to do better. My successes obviously left me speechless. It is one of the best feelings when a customer comes back to me saying the food was a super hit. Over the years, my business has only grown and this is by word of mouth. I’ve never needed to advertise. I still continue to serve customers who first ordered with me in 1990. My specialities include samosas, chicken 65, all kinds of mutton and chicken kebabs, haleem, Hyderabadi dalcha, mutton roast, butter chicken and biryani for your masala cravings. For your sweet tooth, we specialise in khubani ka meetha, double ka meetha, trifle pudding, khubani pudding and our bestsellers the brownies. Every item leaves you craving for more. Taste is our guarantee, so much so that my daughters blame me for all the weight they gain. We do outdoor catering for small gatherings where we can provide live Kebab counters. We can take pride as we have catered to the most eminent people of Hyderabad, in the likes of politicians, business houses and friends, and all this has been through of word of mouth. Hassan’s Caterers, Mustafa Hassan “I’m into Catering Business from 2 years now. It was actually my Mother’s idea more than mine that I start food catering services as my Family loves food, and moreover we understand what good food is. So eventually, I started with small gatherings, orders for which were given to me from Close friends & family only, However after 2-3 months of serving family & friends only, by word of mouth, and by serving good quality & quantity, orders started pouring in, and today, I have my own kitchen space with a staff of 5-6 people working for me with full dedication & sincerity. Today, more than money the thing that keeps me driven is the appreciation that is given to you for serving good food. My Mother has been my only Teacher in tough times and has helped me grow to where I am today. Our Specialities are a little more than one or two, like Mutton Dum Biryani, Haleem, Malai Kabab, Afghani Chicken, Kadai chicken to name a few. The Mean Trademarks are Mutton Leg Roast & Shahib Tukda Desert. We always strive for maintaining Quality & Consistency as these are the keys that will keep you alive in the Market today. Lastly, If you work hard and are Honest in what you do, everything else will surely follow.” Address : Near Asif Nagar Petrol Pump, Asif Nagar. Contact : 9866361429 TULIP - MAY, 2019 21

Saleha Javed’s, Mrs. Saleha “I learnt cooking from my mother-in-law and today I have become an expert at making all the dishes loved by Hyderabadis. I began by simply offering to cook for people for various occasions just because I could and I liked to! Appreciation and advice from family and friends brought up the idea to cater. Every time I used to cook, I used to get calls from people to ask me the recipes or simply to appreciate the mouth watering food. This is when I realised that I can use my talent and start catering for gatherings and occasions. I usually cater to around 30 to50 people as I am the only one who cooks. Biryanis, Dum ka mutton and chicken, shamee kebab and shikampur are must try items in the menu. The best part about our catering service is that everything is purely homemade.” Address: Samskriti Palace, MLA Colony, Road No 12, Banjara Hills, Hyd. Contact: 9849277771
Risingsun Caterers, Chef Rasheed “I grew up in South with my mom who is the best cook in the World. Growing up eating the best dishes made me start blogging about food itself. As time passed, I decided to open my own restaurant but it didn’t really work out. From here came the idea that if not a restaurant, I can always start my own catering business from home itself! Finally, after a lot of planning, I incorporated my food blogging into catering. I have More Than 15 Years Experience In Catering Service and can cater to any cuisine. I have particularly taken classes and learnt cuisines like Arabian, Mughlai, Chinese, South Indian, North Indian, and Desserts Etc... I Make Some Of The Best Arabian And Mughlai Dishes In Hyderabad. Over The Years I Have 50+ Staff And Have Completed More Than 2k Orders In India.” Address: 18-1-995/1/A, Chandrayangutta. Contact: 9381817794

“The idea of catering wasn’t a plan. We shared our food with friends and they gave us the idea of catering. I started cooking for small numbers. And from the start the idea was to share personalized food menu and I still abide by the same. There is no short cut to good tasting food and great clientele. being honest. That is why I have the tag line of honest food. Taste being a major factor of good food, freshness is equally important. Make no mistake when it comes to quality; always choose the superior ingredient brands. Yes the costing is comparatively higher, but so is the quality. Often people are concerned with the high prices. It is an assurance that the meal that you consume is healthy, fresh, and the best you had. I mostly cook Indian & Arabic cuisine. I often recreate continental food recipes as well. The catering requests I take are for select families or small private gatherings. A good number of families that inspire my services are expats. I ensure to adjust the food to their specific taste preferences. Apart from the catering service, I host meals for expats in my home that offer them a brief introduction to Indian food ingredients and cooking styles.” Address: At Seven Tombs Road, Shaikpet. Kebabchini, Mrs.Rakiah Ali Sajjad “My love for cooking began when I was hardly a teenager. What started by simply lending a hand to my mother in the kitchen, led me to falling in love with this art. I began taking interest in trying out different and new recipes. I loved cooking for my family. It gave me immense joy and pride to cook and present my food, which was mostly Hyderabadi cuisine, my forte. After getting married I started learning and trying out vegetarian dishes too. Something which my husband enjoyed eating. My love for cooking, brought me lots of appreciation and encouragement from 100’s of friends and families who I entertained with my food on religious and social events. After years of persuasion from my family, I began my catering journey with Kebabchini, a name given by my first born, my daughter. A lot of hard work, in terms of marketing and presenting my dishes has been put in by both my children & my younger sister who also manages the order inflows. The credit of all the mouth watering images of my food goes to my son. From simply cooking for my family, to actually being out there to cater to people of different diversities gives me a lot more responsibility and pride and the joy of getting their valuable appreciation, sums it up. Kebabchini is just a beginning, I dream to take it to not just the houses of Hyderabad but around the globe someday, Inshallah.” Address: 10-3-16-5-D/3, Humayunnagar, Hyd. Contact: 96184 76017

Sleepless Festive Grandiose in Old City The month of May, the month of summer vacations, is packed with multiple events and openings to keep you engaged with family and friends. Ramadan, on the other hand, steals away this thunder to the holy Islamic month. With majority of the Muslim population residing in the Old City, all areas around the Mughal Architectural attraction lighten with contagious smiles and fragrances, busy hustle and Haleem. From dry fruits to Mehendicones, everything you need to make Ramadan special is available within the maze of the Old City. - By Twinkle Kotta 30 MAY, 2019 TULIP

Busy Bazaars in the Dark
Charminar, with its Mughal history, brings thousands of tourists and heritage enthusiasts to revel in its beauty. During Ramadan, however, the Old City bustles with vendors and makeshift shops and two wheelers and people at every corner leaving barely any space to breathe. Spread with fruit bazaars and food bazaars and the fragrances of pure attars, at the popular Night Bazaars, cacophony of bargaining and shopping surrounds Charminar from all directions.
Sparkles and Stones
With extensive historical theories about its origin, the Laad Bazaar is popular among women for the wide range of bangles. The space glitters and shines with gold and reflecting light from Stones. Sparkling with the tradition of the bygone days, Laad Bazaar is everyone’s go to destination for bangles shopping. Spanning over four roads, weddings and parties, casuals and concerts, this place is loved by all. During Ramadan, the roads sparkle more and bustle more with more people and more love. Hyderabad’s Hearty Haleem
Ramadan, that is, the Haleem season is here and new businesses have opened along with old ones continuing. Haleem is not just food but love and memories shared amongst loved ones during the fast. The streets of Old City buzz livelier than the rest of the city with Haleem recipes new and old, traditional and experimental, taking up space on the streets. With crowded roads after sunset, Haleem makes for a vibrant night life in the Old City and the rest of Hyderabad.
Love and Smiles at Laad Bazaar
Laad Bazaar’s crowd throughout the year is very famous, more popular is the loss of breathable space during Ramadan. With prohibition of vehicles in the Bazaar for the entire holy month, streets are spanned with markets and pedlars selling bangles and seviyan for everyone. Chatter and laughter is heard from all corners on these crowded streets

Prayers at Mecca Masjid
Marking the first day of breaking the four-week fast, thousands gather at this Masjid, built by Quli Qutub Shah in 1857, to offer their Eidul-fitrprayers. Dressed in kurta-pyjamas after spraying themselves with traditional attar, the fast is broken by sweetening the mouths of brothers and sisters wishing them happiness and love by feasting on seviyan and sheer khurma. With a spiritual celebration of the self and the world, people rejoice in togetherness.

Is Eid even Eid without Mehendi?
With dynamic changes in designs and trends in Mehendi, Eid-Ul-Fitr is incomplete without it. The Old City is filled with Mehendi artists and Mehendi cones for all those who love the Henna art that celebrates earthly pleasures after the four-week fast that emphasizes on spirituality of life and glorifies women. Intricate patterns that uphold traditions are seen on everyone’s hands and legs and reflect in the markets during Ramadan celebrating the same. Everything you need for an authentic Sheer Khurma
Seviyan and dry fruits make up for the main ingredients of the traditional dessert Sheer Khurma and the Old City, especially around Charminar, boast of a few remaining and slowly fading traditionally made seviyan. Almonds and pistachios and dried dates are found on every corner to add the crunchy element to the most loved dessert that concludes the month of Ramzan. An essential to the month of Ramadan, Old City, yet again, sweetens your taste buds with traditionality!
Fresh Fruity Feasts
The fruit bazaars around Charminar are not unknown. With Summer here, Mangoes are flooding the markets, making choices easier with their natural freshness and fruity delights. Customers are presented with an assortment of fruits from mundane apples to quality kiwis to choose from. With colours and scents, richness of nature is made available around Charminar throughout the year with an increased demand during the holy month.

Heavenly Fragrances
Old fragrances of Jasmines and Roses, new scents of mint and musk take over the streets in the Old City. Long lasting, in tiny bottles, these skin-friendly attars are loved by women who carry multiple fragrances in their purses wherever they go. With its rich history associated with Noorjahan, attars are a cultural embracement. During Ramzan, this cultural restatement comes alive through traditional attars and modern attars widening their consumer base by attracting youngsters as well!
Elegant Ethnics
The streets around the four pillars spill over with extravagant clothing which are a major cultural representation of the festivities and traditions that surround Ramadan. Sequins and glitter, mirrors and heavy fabrics, bright colours and gold borders shine from all corners that make choosing a dress extremely difficult. Tell us something about yourself that nobody else knows. That I am a very good self-trained interior designer and I have designed homes for my friends apart from my own home. I believe that one should keep their homes minimilastically equipped with only what they need and use on a daily basis and should throw the clutter out of the house to create efficient space and to be more organized and efficient in life. Space is expensive especially in a city like Mumbai and the trick is always “Less is more” when it comes to your home space. You have received tremendous International popularity in countries where they Beintehaa has been dubbed and released. You were also invited to Dar e Salam twice where Beintehaa is a huge hit, tell us about your experience. I feel blessed that Beintehaa was dubbed and released in several countries especially Turkey Indonesia South Africa East Africa Kazakhstan Bosnia etc. Apart from great popularity and tons of fans on my Instagram, I was also invited to UK and to Dar Es Salam twice. It’s amazing how people recognise me there when I walk on the streets of Dar Es Salam and call out my character name “Aaliya”. I was felicitated at the Sinema Zetu International Film Festival at Tanzania last year and this time a famous company signed me up as their brand ambassador to model for their water and wheat flour brand.

Quick 5 1. Best thing about being famous? Your work is immortalised unlike other professions. 2. Who is your celebrity crush? Atif Aslam 3. What do you spend money on most? Clothes! 4. One thing someone can do to instantly win your heart? Sing like a pro. 5. Beintehaa or Love ka Intezar, what’s closer to your heart? Beintehaa
What’s the equation you share with Harshad, your co actor in Beintehaa? It was always a purely professional equation as long as we worked together. We are very different as individuals with different tastes and personalities besides we stay miles apart from each other. We don’t share our friend circle, nor have we found an opportunity to hang out together post our show ended apart from events or interviews maybe. What role did your sister play in making you choose your career? I have chosen my own career path which was quite different from my sister’s. While I was studying I got several Bollywood offers which were really huge but I never took them up out of my own choice. Nobody from my family told me what I should be doing in my career or how I should get launched in Bollywood. It was my childhood dream to become a model and I was lucky to be a successful model with 50 plus ads my list. I also did film journalism and wrote for Bangalore mirror for 2 years while simultaneously working on South movies. I did Television and won the best debut and best actress awards in my debut year itself. I debuted as a singer in 2015 and recorded two cover songs since then for Saregama India. Whatever I have done in my career path has been my own decision and choice; my sister has only given me her advice whenever I have needed it to take any decision on the work front. What made you opt for television shows rather than movies like your sister? The whole dynamics of Bollywood changed within a decade of my sister being a part of the movie industry. Producers and directors would openly declare that donning on a bikini or a lip-lock was mandatory to be a part of their movies. I was not very comfortable with the demand so I chose work which was within my comfort space. Television is a huge market and every Bollywood actor wants to be a part of television in some or the other way because they are aware of its gigantic reach and popularity. Its daily-viewership format offers better and longer recollection value and popularity. What do you wish to tell people who are romantically interested in you? That I’m single and they still have a chance. (laughs) What is the weirdest thing a fan has done for you? Flown specially for me from UK to India only to meet me on my set TULIP - MAY, 2019 41

You’ve styled both men and women. What is the biggest difference that stands out for you while working with them? Given the evident options that women have, they are more experimental despite some limitations in the form of scepticism associated with pleasing their fan bases. It’s getting better now with every individual. Everyone wants to be unique. I’d love to work with more men and experiment with their silhouettes, colour palettes and hair-styles and change their fashion statements. What is the one, most important thing that you keep in mind while choosing an outfit? For me, it’s two things, not just one. One, body type – it determines the drape and silhouette which is extremely essential. Two, minimalism because “less is more”. Summer season has set in and the fashion industry is sure to see changes in trends. What are the emerging trends now in women’s and men’s fashion? Colour is the major trend this season. Everyone should go for happy colours – pastels & poppies. Go easy on the silhouettes with hand-woven fabrics, linens and cottons. Printed is the chic today ranging from printed shirts to printed joggers. Light Layers are also in trend now. We can go for breathable linen jackets and handwoven bomber jackets which will add style and also remain comfortable in the summer. Can you give our men and women readers some tips about styling this season? This season, everyone should go easy on whatever they wear. Wear whatever you like and follow sustainability. Printed shirts, printed shorts, printed jackets, printed joggers and everything and anything with prints are the it, and prints being unisex comes in handy.

You’ve styled both men and women. What is the biggest difference that stands out for you while working with them? Working with both genders is obviously, extremely different. However, there is not much of a difference that stands out with both of them being experimental. With Androgyny on the rise, everyone wants to stand out. It’s extremely challenging to stay up-to date with the trends. It’s the challenge to style distinctively while following trends that keeps me going. What is the one, most important thing that you keep in mind while choosing an outfit? Comfort and Confidence. You could be wearing pyjamas to a party and still be able to pull it off. Whatever you choose to add to your wardrobe, make sure it is comfortable because as long as you’re comfortable, you’ll always be confident. Summer season has set in and the fashion industry is sure to see changes in trends. What are the emerging trends now in women’s and men’s fashion? Comfortable clothing in pastels and florals for men and women is the chic today. Back-to-the--60s Neon colours are back in fashion, and adding some neon in your clothing or accessories will definitely make you stand out. Men in loose and over-sized clothing in the trending. Bell-bottoms pants and bootcuts are a definite addition to your wardrobe this summer. Can you give our men and women readers some tips about styling this season? Stress on comfort, again. Once you get comfortable, play around with contrasts and neons and pastels and loose silhouettes and all the other trends to style yourselves and stand out from the lot!

You’ve styled both men and women. What is the biggest difference that stands out for you while working with them? The difference is more so between individuals and not really between genders. It is the personality traits and physical attributes that make styling different for different people. What is the one thing that you keep in mind while styling? Comfort. Being in sync with your true personality is extremely important while styling. You cannot make an outfit look good no matter what the brand name is, no matter how beautiful the design is, if you are not comfortable. I always keep comfort in mind while styling myself or my clients. Summer’s here and the fashion industry is sure to see new trends. What are the emerging trends now in women’s and men’s fashion? There’s a lot of trends to choose from this Summer. Women have a wide range of an assortment - beiges and nudes in party wear and casual wear; complete or partial laces in dresses and shirts and skirts; folk elements like crochet embroideries and strings; quirky feathers and
fringes at hems and necklines and footwear; tie-dye in shirts and pants and dresses and hair accessories; colourful tailor suits from pastels to deep greens to bright oranges for casual brunches and board-room meetings; bows on necklines, waist, hats, accessories - “bigger the bow the better”. Men, on the other hand, can juggle around withtailored designs and jackets, exaggerated double breasted suits with large layers and big buttons. Solid patch-workwith two different coloured panels on one suit, or a red pocket on an otherwise white shirt is another trend to follow this summer. The “shorts have gone shorter” for men and they can pair their outfits with minimalistic details to get the complete summer look. Can you give our men and women readers some tips about styling this season? I’d say, keep it simple. Don’t overdo one trend. Keep in mind your comfort while following a trend. Pair one or two trending elements with your basics to be in sync with trend and personality in a budget friendly manner. Give emphasis to the elements. Grooming makes all the difference for men. Your major focus is on men’s styling, any specific reason to this? Menswear can be challenging to navigate. Since not many, (especially in the India) have yet devised a plausible replacement for the male dressing, the only way to fight the lingering aura of conventionality has been to obsessively play around with the fabric, details, and silhouette. And I like a good challenge - to unleash the potential and change their clothing routines. What is the one thing that you keep in mind while styling? I give utmost importance to the shape. Irrespective of height and weight, all men fall into five shapes - Oval, Rectangle, Triangle, Trapezoid and Inverted Triangle. Dressing to shape helps accentuate your best assets while drawing away attention from the parts you’re not too happy about. What are the trends in men’s fashion this summer? Expressive and floral prints. It goes to show that men can really embrace their wild side with both colours and patterns. Hats: They’ve been making a statement and continuing to gain momentum for a couple of years now. Believe it or not, there’s about 21 options to choose from. For one, lightweight unstructured blazers, made from breathable fabrics like linen/cotton or bamboo fabric. Dodge the layers. Modus Operandi: T-shirts. Upgrade your shorts from a regular Khaki/Navy to Seersuckers/ Irish Linen. Espadrilles are a definite wardrobe essential to own this summer. Can you give our men and women readers some tips about styling this season? My mantra – You don’t need more clothes; you need better clothes. Don’t throw away old clothes, instead, use a map and turn different combinations of clothes into striking unapologetic personal statements. Experiment with different trends and gradually step out of your comfort zones.

Haleem with the BAIGS What’s your definition of the purpose of Ramadan? Gazala: It is one of the five pillars of Islam. Ramadan is a chance provided by the almighty to purify our selves. It makes us self disciplined. It teaches us to acknowledge the bounties showered by the almighty on us. How every individual is equal in the eyes of God. The feeling of starving in the day and discharging all the commandments of the almighty by praying in the night. It is the month in which the Quran was revealed to the prophet.
Given the change that Ramadan brings to our usual routines, how do you plan to: -Stay energetic throughout the day/perform your tasks with focus? -Manage your time and balance between your personal, professional and spiritual life? Firasat: The onset of Ramadan itself is very energizing spiritually. The meal which we have at predawn called seher, gives us the energy we need to last throughout the day. Since our day starts long before the sunrise, we can strike the perfect balance between our professional, personal and spiritual life. It also teaches us time management which also, if followed STRICTLY helps us the right way of living. I usually do not sleep after seher. After seher and our morning prayer, I get going for my routine work. It’s been a practice now from last few years to start our offices early and close long before the sunset. What changes do you make in Ramadan to your technology usage, social life, and diet? Farah: Life in Ramadan becomes extensively busy. We get hardly any time to socialise. The last 10 days if Ramadan usually gets busy with many iftar parties. Attending all becomes necessary due to the warmth with which they are arranged. It also is a good change from the tight schedule that we follow in that month. Technology for me takes a back seat in that month. It’s more of a family time that we would like associate ourselves with whenever we get chance. 56 MAY, 2019 TULIP
Samah: Diet goes for a toss totally. I personally cannot resist the temptations of haleem, marag, etc specially from my restaurant . I always decide to open the fast with fruits and healthy options but in vain. This time of the year, 90% of the individuals indulge in the best of cuisine which every restaurant has to offer. What’s your secret to staying motivated and consistent throughout Ramadan, especially when you hit the mid-Ramadan slump? Yaser: The onset of Ramadan itself is very energetic. The first 10-15 days get over really fast but the last 10-15 days just squeezes out all the strength some times. There is the excitement of approaching EID also. For me, I never count how many days have passed by. I, always try to enjoy and live one day at a time. I am actually a planner but when it comes to Ramadan, I never do that. It is just left to GOD. And whenever I feel a little low, I make myself busy in many activities which are done in city for the sake of almighty only like feeding the poor, charity, etc. What is the biggest positive change any particular Ramadan has brought to your life? Aamir: I think the biggest positive change is I have learned the importance of food. I used to waste so much of food before but then I started noticing how less privileged people would make do with whatever is available at the time of breaking the fast and it opened my eyes. There were days when I used to feel angry because things were not made according to my likes but I am changed person now. I eat whatever has been made and don’t complain much. All in all, every part of ramdan teaches us something in life and if followed correctly, I think it is the best way of life.

What’s your definition of the purpose of Ramadan? Faraaz: Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, improvement and increased devotion and worship. Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam. To develop and strengthen our powers of self-control, so that one can resist wrongful desires. The fast begins at dawn and ends at sunset. It is also month of giving and sharing.
Given the change that Ramadan brings to our usual routines, how do you plan to stay energetic throughout the day/perform your tasks with focus? Faiz: It is not easy especially in difficult climatic conditions, but faith and determination can make one overcome most difficult conditions and circumstances. It takes first couple of days to settle after which we get use to it and its business like usual. Nutritious diet at Saher (before dawn) and during Iftar (after breaking the fast after sunset) makes it easy. Pace of life definitely slows down a bit during the day. Taravee Prayers at the mosque after dinner give you great amount of satisfaction and peace of mind. What changes do you make in Ramadan to your technology usage, social life, and diet? Kamil: Everything remains the same except including socialising. A pious Muslim is supposed to follow the tenets of Islam round the year and not just during the month of Ramadaan. Hence, we follow the same in letter and spirit and continue socializing. What are the different cuisines made at home for iftaar. Nida: For Iftaar the first thing we break our fast is Khajoor(Dates).... we make dishes like Haleem,Puff pastry known as Lukhmi(with filling of minced meat), Daal with green chutney and lime (Chana daal), Dahiwadaas, Banana bhajiyas, Potato bhajiyas, Fruit chat, Guava chat,Fresh fruit juices. As now everyone has become health conscious so fried dishes have been reduced and more of fresh fruits items of taken its place. Elaborate dinner follows after Magrib prayers and before Taravee, and in Hyderabad eating out after Taravee right up till Saher has become very common. The entire city has an amazing festive atmosphere during the entire month of Ramadaan. What’s your secret to staying motivated and consistent throughout Ramadan, especially when you hit the mid-Ramadan slump? Faraaz: Faith in Almighty and how this helps purify our soul and body keeps up going and undoubtedly gives us a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. What are your tips for our readers on approaching the Qur’an and coming out a different person at the end of this Ramadan, In sha Allah? Faiz: Quran is the book of guidance and Islam is a way of life which Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had himself exhibited and guided fellow followers, which has been recorded as Hadees. Reading the entire Quran at least once and understanding it in our own dialect helps one follow the right path. It is indeed an amazing experience and an eye-opener. What is the biggest positive change any particular Ramadan has brought to your life? Nida: What we practice during the Holy month transforms us to being kind, just, helping others generously, being true to oneself and all fellow human beings. One is supposed to be kind to all living beings. To sum it up the Holy month of Ramadan makes one a better human being, to strive and make this world a better place to live in.

Mandi with the JAVEEDS What’s your definition of the purpose of Ramadan? Zafar: To me, Ramzan is a time for prayers, family, and community. I feel its purpose is to encourage self-reflection, spirituality, and charity. I also see it as a celebration of our religious and cultural identity. It reminds us to look after the underprivileged among us and that is a big part of it. Given the change that Ramadan brings to our usual routines, how do you plan to: -Stay energetic throughout the day/perform your tasks with focus? -Manage your time and balance between your personal, professional and spiritual life? Omer: While it may seem like a task to many who do not observe it, it actually is very routine and natural to those of us who observe it. The Iftar and Suhoor times actually mean that I have more time on hand to manage my personal and professional life, whilst keeping spirituality at the forefront. What changes do you make in Ramadan to your technology usage, social life, diet? Aamer: Given my busy schedule, it is difficult for me to make changes in either technology usage or social life but I make a conscious effort to maintain a balanced diet. It is a bit of a challenge but I manage to do it anyhow. What are the different cuisines made at home for iftaar? Ruba: There is of course a lot of Hyderabadi food such as Haleem, Dahi
Vade, Biryani, etc., and also some delectable Arabian dishes such as Laham Mandi. My friends and I also arrange potluck Iftaar parties now and then, so I get to feast upon Telangana cuisine, Andhra cuisine, Persian cuisine and what not! What’s your secret to staying motivated and consistent throughout Ramadan, especially when you hit the mid-Ramadan slump? Omer: There is no slump, really. As we hit the middle of Ramzan, we start looking forward to Layatul Qadr, which is the most blessed of all nights, and of course Eid, which marks the end of the month of Ramzan. The spirit of community and family makes observing Ramzan effortless and rewarding at the same time. What are your tips for our readers on approaching the Qur’an and coming out a different person at the end of this Ramadan, In sha Allah? Zafar: I think it is a lot easier nowadays to read the Qur’an, as its digital copies are easily accessible on our smartphones. I hope this month makes everyone a better person and a better Muslim. What is the biggest positive change any particular Ramadan has brought to your life? Aamer: I think every Ramzan has brought about some positive change in me. It teaches and reminds us to be thoughtful, kind, patient and generous in our everyday lives and I think these are amazing qualities for any human being to inculcate.

What’s your definition of the purpose of Ramadan? Farheen: The purpose of Ramadan for us is to develop and strengthen our powers of self control and discipline, to be compassionate to other humans and spread the message of peace. Given the change that Ramadan brings to our usual routines, how do you plan to: -Stay energetic throughout the day/perform your tasks with focus? -Manage your time and balance between your personal, professional and spiritual life? Hussain: What we eat for suhoor is the most integral part of our fast. Paying attention to high intake of fluids at suhoor helps us to stay hydrated till iftar. Since we have long working hours, the mornings are not as tiring as the late afternoons. Working on patients keeps our minds busy and focused and by the time we finish treating, it’s time for iftar. The beauty of Ramadan is it teaches us multitasking and that is how we balance between spiritual and professional life. What changes do you make in Ramadan to your technology usage, social life, diet? Farheen: Ramadan is a great time to reconnect with friends in suhoor and iftar parties, whom we haven’t met in months. As for the diet, there are so many delicacies that dieting becomes a difficult task post iftar but we do keep a watch on the quantity and frequency of food intake. Most people usually think that Ramadan is a period where in you can lose weight but that’s not how fasting works. Fasting helps you balance your metabolism. What are the different cuisines made at home for iftaar? Hussain: As the sun sets, amazing food comes out for iftar. Hyderabadi’s are known to make delicious iftari. Apart from the usual iftari we make an extremely refreshing and re-hydrating drink called khandaa, a Persian drink made of lukewarm lime water. What’s your secret to staying motivated and consistent throughout Ramadan, especially when you hit the mid-Ramadan slump? Farheen: Keeping in mind the abundant blessings we get from fasting is what keeps us motivated and consistent throughout Ramadan. What are your tips for our readers on approaching the Qur’an and coming out a different person at the end of this Ramadan, In sha Allah? Hussain: They only thing we would want the people to get, if only they could reflect on what the Quran says is to be a better human being. We are all brothers in humanity irrespective of the cast, culture and religion. What is the biggest positive change any particular Ramadan has brought to your life? Farheen: It is difficult to mention a particular Ramadan which bought a change but every year Ramadan gives you a new opportunity to become a better version of yourself.
Since you guys are doctors, could u also suggest to our readers some health related tips for Ramadan? Hussain: As dental doctors we would like to advise to thoroughly brush your teeth after suhoor/ sehri and use a tongue cleaner to remove residues that form on the tongue which is the main causative agent for bad breath. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water.

HAIRSTYLES THIS SUMMER Men or women, our hairstyles and haircuts become a part of who we are and where we are.Traditionality or modernity? Chic or classic? Occasion or comfort? Too many things to consider before choosing a hairstyle or a haircut for us and others (deep sigh). It’s only natural then, for us to be worried when summer’s here with blazing heat and we need our hair to look its best at all times. To keep up with trends and feel comfortable in our hair with the scorching sun is a colossal challenge. But, don’t worry, weddings or brunches, parties or meetings, we got you covered! Here are some tips and trends this summer from some of the leading hairstylists in the city to stay voguish for the summer. Take notes! - By Twinkle Kotta
Madhu Chakrapu What is the trending hairstyle this season? Messy curls. This summer is extremely hot and it is necessary to have a long-lasting hairstyle. Messy curls will remain despite the heat and sweat. How do you choose a specific hairstyle for a person? The dress and the facial structure are the two things to keep in mind while hairstyling. Once you decide what hairstyle suits the occasion, you have to proceed to see whether the hairstyle suits the facial structure of the person. Whether a fringe or a puff or a braid, it is chosen only after understanding the outfit and the facial structure. Why did you choose hairstyling as a profession? Hairstyle is never static. There are always new ways to style. Experimentation never ends with hairstyling and gives a lot of scope for creativity. The profession always poses to be a challenge and gives you lots of opportunity to grow. Contact : 9866533894 Instagram @ chakrapu. madhu 60 MAY, 2019 TULIP

What are the hairstyles trending this summer? The best hairstyle for men offers the right balance between style and comfort in this heat. The high fade with textured hair on top and the sides neat and faded makes it easy for self-maintenance. The quiff is also becoming a popular trend with the advantage that it can be done on short and medium hair. Textured crops are another most loved trend this season with its easy maintenance. The comb over haircut is perfect for all occasions and it’s very versatile and easy to style. It looks good on almost all face shapes. This style has something for everyone. Women, on the other hand, have the inspired-by-the-70s blunt bobs, the grey hair dyes where age inclusivity and embracing the naturals is trending. The super straight sleek hair is also loved by everyone where straight hair with just one length bold straight line cut is the fashion statement. Bangs are always a trend and this season is no different. Bangs are so versatile, you can push them back or forward or side, you get to decide and have both short and long hair at the same time! Clips are also back for both men and women. So, go ahead and clip your hair and style them with any fancy clips this season! What are the things that you keep in mind before styling hair? Finding the right hairstyle can be quite the challenge. We should always know which hairstyle suits our natural texture. We also need to keep in mind the maintenance products and procedures post styling like frequency of trims and hair-care products. Most importantly, we have to know whether the hairstyle will suit the face shape and fit into our lifestyles. So, discussing and going over these things with my clients is extremely important for me every time a client walks in. Can you give our readers some tips about hairstyling this season? The safest hairstyle that works for any face shape are the side part hair and the pompadour. So, if you are confused about what to do with your hair and not really sure about which hairstyle would suit you, these two hairstyles are your go-to. Instagram : @sonaithapa123
Elina Khisretdinova What is the one major concern that you have while styling hair? For me, client satisfaction comes first. When I am doing a hairstyle, I work very hard to see a smile on their face and I don’t stop until that happens. It is summer now and there are definitely going to be some changes in trends? What is this summer’s hair trend? Trends range from long and super shiny braids to natural waves. Past season was about romance braids, now it is about sleek and tough plaits, 4-5 strand or 3D twisted braids. Beachy waves with natural movementis another trend for this summer. You can add and experiment with accessories from a humble hair clip to bows and ribbons to make your statement. How do you choose a specific hairstyle for a person? There are a lot of things to keep in mind while choosing a hairstyle for a person – the haircut and length, hair condition and thickness, and obviously the dress. But the first thing is the clients’ wish and satisfaction. If I feel that a hairstyle won’t suit a person, I guide them gradually. For example, for a round-shape face, it is better to have a high updo. If my client has a big forehead with and an elongated face, I create volume on the middle section of the face with a down messy bun or a goodness braid. Can you give us some tips for hair-styling this summer? You can use hair serums to make the trending knit and sleep braid. This would really help in taming for those with frizzy hair. You can also use sugar and salt spray for the natural beachy waves. The former will help in adding shine and the latter will provide a matt finish. If you have extremely smooth hair, you can apply hairspray directly on a bobby pin to fix it in your hair so that it will stay. Instagram @ elina.k_muah TULIP - MAY, 2019 61
BEAUTY Aly Hirani (SWAG4HAIR) What is the most trending hairstyle? Short hair is the go-to for both style and comfort this summer. However, if you do not want short hair, you can keep your hair at one length and add a heavy bang. For men, it is all about fade and going crew cut! What tips would you like to give our readers about hair colour? I always prefer to colour hair based on personality rather than skin tone. If you want to specifically match with the skin tone, fair skin can go with cool undertones like dark blonde and brown skin tones will do with warm shades of coppers and golds and caramels. Can you give us basic guidelines on facial structure and hairstyle? Facial structures play an essential role to determine the best suitable hairstyle. A square-shaped face will look good with long, face-framing layers and a heart-shaped face with long layers and full fringes or an angular bob that gently grazes your chin. Round-shaped faces can use inconspicuous layers that start at your jawline to make your hair look fuller and steal away focus from the roundness of your face. Any tips for our readers? Don’t be too nervous to try a new hairstyle. Give it a try and carry your hairstyle with confidence. Facebook : alyhirani Contact : 9642249665
Shama Panjwani (ZAMM’S) What are some easy hairstyles for weddings? Textured hair in the front, followed by a simple bun looks chic and doesn’t take much time to fix. A few tresses left around the face will give you a softer look. The best part is, this hairstyle works perfectly even on a bad hair day or if you are running short on time. Actresses like Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone are often seen sporting this style. Another quick fix, I’d swear by, are braided hairstyles.Braid a few strands of hair, wave up the rest of them and leave them open or tie it into an easy updo. This style goes best for the bridesmaids. What are the trending hairstyles this summer? Sleek hairstyle. Be it a formal reception or something conventional, say, like a Sangeet, this hairstyle will go with traditional and contemporary attire. Adding a mathapatti will complete the look for a bride. Floral hairstyle is another trending wedding hairdo that adds vibrancy and colour to the hair with fresh flowers. You can use them in updos, half updo, braids, or open hairstyles to make it more aesthetic. Instagram : @hair_by_shama Contact : 08121177046

HEALTH
KNOW YOURSELF BETTER
Conversation with a Gynaecologist
PCOS is a very common lifestyle issue among young women that has been on the rise in the past couple of years. Very few people, however, know if they have PCOS and when they know, very often know how to help themselves. The health implications of PCOS and their long-term effects along with knowledge on treating it and feeling better physically and mentally, make it essential for everyone to regularly connect with gynaecologists. Here are some common questions that we asked a renowned gyneacologist in the city, Dr. Kameshwari, who leads us through the details of PCOS that are otherwise forgotten because of ignorance or a lack of awareness. At what age should a person start visiting the Gynaecologist? Most mothers are uncertain about this. It would be ideal if they can consult the Gynaecologist around the age of 12 or 13, when their menstrual cycles start and physical changes occur in the body. The visit will likely be conversational more than anything else to counsel them about the body development, periods, any pain and genital health. What are some of the most important regimes to follow for vaginal hygiene? Keep the vagina clean and dry. Use plain, unperfumed soap to wash the area around the vagina gently every day. The vagina is designed to keep itself clean with the help of natural secretions (discharge) that help keep the vagina’s pH balance at its normal low level. Use cotton underwear and fresh towels to dry. Eat healthy and exercise for improving overall body health which in turn keeps vagina healthy. Practice safe sex and avoid intercourse with full bladder. Have regular (3 yearly) pap smear tests for prevention of cervical cancer. What exactly is PCOS? Is there a difference between PCOS/PCOD? PCOS is a common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age group. They develop water filled cysts on the surface of their ovaries typically in a necklace like pattern as seen on scan and are called polycystic ovaries that lead to hormonal imbalances. PCOS is a “syndrome,” that affects the ovaries and ovulation. Its three main features are cysts in the ovaries, increased male hormones (androgens) and irregular periods. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is also known as Stein Leventhal syndrome or PCOD. Some women display the typical appearance of the cysts on scan and some do not. Presence of Polycystic ovaries is not mandatory to label the condition as PCOS.There is no real difference between PCOS and PCOD. What is the reason for increased cases of PCOS today? At what age does a person usually get diagnosed with PCOS? Although the cause of PCOS is not known, it appears that PCOS may be related to many different factors like sedentary life styles, unhealthy 68 MAY, 2019 TULIP
diet, stress, genetic and environmental factors working together. Other factors include insulin resistance, increased levels of hormones called androgens, and an irregular menstrual cycle. Obesity can be a sign of PCOS and being obese exacerbates other manifestations of PCOS like infertility and insulin resistance. What are some questions that we need to ask our doctors when diagnosed with PCOS? What is PCOS, what are its symptoms, how is it diagnosed, how does it affect periods and fertility, what is the treatment to conceive, what can one do to lessen its symptoms, when and how often to see a Gynaecologist, does it impact pregnancy, future long-term risks, is there a permanent cure, questions like these are necessary to ask your Gynaecologist. What are some of the common misconceptions you have encountered about PCOS throughout your career? The most common myth is that the treatment given by previous doctor did not work! They keep changing doctors but fail to understand that there is no permanent solution to make it go away completely. They think they must have cysts on the ovaries to have PCOS and do not realise presence of cysts is not mandatory for the diagnosis in all cases. Some believe that cannot conceive or they have to be on hormones life-long or that hormones make them fat or they cannot lose weight. What are the immediate symptoms of PCOS? Irregular or delayed periods is the most common symptom. Acne and hair on the face, weight gain are the other symptoms. Difficulty in getting pregnant is the other common presentation. How do PCOS, thyroid, diabetes and cholesterol relate? PCOS and thyroid disorders can coexist. There is enough literature support to argue that prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism/thyroid autoimmunity is increased in women with PCOS. Long-term studies are required to assess the significance of thyroid dysfunction in patients with PCOS, especially on fertility.
PCOS is linked with high Insulin levels which is characteristic of type 2 Diabetes and the risk of type 2 Diabetes in women with PCOS is notably higher. Pregnant women with PCOS are nearly three times as likely as women without it to develop gestational diabetes. Obesity is an important risk factor. With this recognized connection, it is recommended that women with PCOS get routinely screened for type 2 diabetes earlier and more often than women without PCOS. Insulin resistance and weight gain are two contributing factors to PCOS. Insulin resistance typically causes the body to produce more insulin than normal (hyperinsulinemia).Risk of cardiovascular disease is increased due to the higher prevalence of obesity and insulin resistance among women with PCOS. There are a variety of reasons why this might happen, including weight gain, high insulin and abnormal hormones. Losing weight, increasing activity or exercise, and quitting smoking are all interventions that work together to improve your cholesterol levels. However, if they are not effective, your physician may prescribe statins, a medication that works to lower cholesterol levels. What are the ways through which we can cure PCOS? PCOS does not have a cure, but there are treatments available to reduce symptoms. PCOS treatment focuses on managing individual concerns. Specific treatment might involve lifestyle changes and/or medication. To regulate periods, hormones like birth control pills or progesterones, to help ovulate, medications like Clomiphene, Letrozole or Injectable hormones, to reduce insulin resistance, Metformin to regulate hair growth, birth control pills with anti-male hormone, spironolactone. Some of these treatments are cosmetic like acne creams and hair removal methods How effective is weight loss mechanism for curbing PCOS? Obesity is a common finding in women with PCOS. They are more likely to develop many of the problems associated with weight gain and insulin resistance, including Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, infertility. Weight loss may help to improve PCOS symptoms, but won’t necessarily make them go away for good. By following a healthy diet and beginning a regular exercise routine, one can help their body increase its response to insulin and possibly decrease androgen production. Weight loss can restore the normal function of the ovaries and result in normal hormone production. There are different types of PCOS, Insulin resistant PCOS, inflammation based PCOS and hormone induced. Different types of PCOS also have different symptoms – not all women with PCOS are overweight, or have acne, or have excess hair growth – and this confusion can delay diagnosis, and therefore delay proper treatment and support. What affects does PCOS have on the sexual life of an individual? Symptoms of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) such as weight gain, excess hair, hair loss, acne and problems with fertility can impact on relationships with others and sex life. Women with PCOS have been found to report an increase in problems with sexual function. Psychological factors in PCOS also contribute significantly. The concern about lowered fertility in some women with PCOS may also impact sexual function

with only progesterone, vaginal ring, intrauterine device. Birth control pills can help with many symptoms of PCOS, can regularize periods and help with skin symptoms. Does it influence the mental health of a person? Yes, they need emotional support as women with PCOS are more likely to experience problems with depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety can impact on quality of life physically by disrupting eating and sleeping patterns, psychologically by reducing motivation and losing self-confidence and socially by affecting relationships. There is a need for these women to reach out to professionals and psychologists for help. What are the long-term effects of PCOS? Women who are diagnosed with PCOS should be informed of the possible long-term risks to health that are associated with the condition like Insulin resistance and Diabetes, Snoring and drowsiness, Cardiovascular risks like atherosclerosis and MI, irregular cycles like no periods or delayed periods in women with PCOS may predispose to endometrial hyperplasia and later cancer of uterine lining. Can you give our readers some suggestions about dealing with PCOS? Follow some tips like regular exercise with resistance training; keep a regular check of insulin and glucose levels even if not overweight. Get diagnosed early by reporting to doctor early. Accept the diagnosis and stay positive about it. Understand that it is not a life-threatening illness and its control is in your hands by “Eating Right and Staying Active”. Despite the high prevalence, PCOS is an under-recognized condition, and many women remain undiagnosed due to lack of awareness and women presenting late to the gyneacologist.

MOVIES Movie Reviews
Kalank Abhiskek Varman’s multi-starrer film Kalank brings into scrutiny the societal norms that surround love and family relations. With wonderful acting on screen, an ill-fated love story and marital relationship is brought alive. The lights and colours measure with the mood that the story sets and grabs the audience’s attention throughout. The movie exemplifies the history of India through this vivid display of emotions, music and colours. With Alia Bhatt, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, and Sonakshi Sinha sharing one screen, the movie is entrenched with spectacular talent that is bound to leave the audience spellbound.
Avengers: Endgame Starring the entire MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), Endgame is a continuation of the previous Avengers Series, Avengers: Infinity War, which concludes with Thanos’ “mercy” wiping out 50% of all living creatures. With death and life, Endgame revolves around emotions of reconciliation of the Civil War, forgotten memories of Infinity War, redoing the past of the Marvel Universe. From arriving at a time travel strategy to defeating Thanos at his own game with Black Panther, Captain Marvel, The Avengers, Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the movie rejoices with tears and happiness at the noble deaths of Iron Man and Black Widow. Endgame sets a tone of finality with no post-credit scenes. A true Marvel fan would never be able to resist shedding tears to the end of the Avengers.
Majili The movie stars the most loved on-screen and off-screen couple Samantha and Chaitanya Akkineni. The movie revolves around a very disturbed, failed cricketer and his very hopeful wife who believes that her husband will quit his alcoholic ways. The movie captures the emotions beautifully as the actors live up to their characters. Siva Nirvana, the director, makes the movie extremely engaging and ensures that the audience remains glued to the screen until the end. With emotional and physical conflicts placed at two ends of the spectrum, the movie manages to blend them together effortlessly to make the movie Majili an enormous favourite among the audience.

BOOKS The Five People You Meet in Heaven (2003)
Mitch Albom’s The Five People You Meet in Heaven is a philosophical and inspirational novel that revolves around the afterlife of a war veteran and the five people he meets in heaven. Today with people becoming increasingly disconnected with the real world, Albom transports us to an afterlife where we meet people we never met before but have met and made a difference in their lives to make the real world more glaringly vivid. Every person that Eddie meets in heaven opens a different perspective to life. Albom uses interactive and eloquent language to make it an interesting read. This is a book that you won’t be able to put down until you reach the end.
Things Fall Apart (1958)
Chinua Achibe literally makes “things fall apart” through this narrative by making the readers question the idea of community and the structures that exist in a society. The plot is set in nineteenth century Nigeria and demonstrates cultural disintegration as a result of colonialism. With a simple plot and beautiful use of language, Achibe transports us all to a world with different possibilities and different perceptions of society and its meaning. Things Fall Apart book is a must read for all those looking for something and not knowing what.
The God of Small Things (1997)
Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things, in broad strokes, offers a nexus of political, personal, social and mythic elements all at once. Roy’s lush prose style is unprecedented but feels all too familiar with her vocabulary that absorbs vernacular elements seamlessly, breaking linguistic boundaries, carrying important implications that have plagued every English writer in India worth their salt – how to own a language despite its colonial baggage? The boundaries she transcends extend to political, and largely spiritual ideas. If one were to dare to ascribe to this novel one overarching message, it would be a victory of the human spirit over the laws that govern our social interactions. Roy’s description of sordid details in The God of Small Things is unrivalled in both language and emotion.
