NOVEMBER

Welcome!

Stepping into a month full of possibilities and new opportunities, I look back at the amazing month gone by, filled with festivities and theme parties and I can only wonder what the new month is going to have in store for us. But whatever that may be, you can be assured that our issue is teaming with plenty of good stuff! Make way for the versatile, charming and rising superstar Varun Tej who made a striking appearance on our cover! We spoke to Varun about everything under the sun, right from his acting inspo, to his upcoming projects, to his list of favourites! Don’t forget to catch up! November has always been synonymous with Children’s day for as long as we know, but for the last couple years, it’s been making headlines for the newest trends with a cause. No shave November is here and so is International Men’s day! Both these events allow us to celebrate men in their true element. Scan our pages for a few words of wisdom from the Sons of Adam themselves, without forgetting how to make our tiny tots happy at the same time. The words of Priyanka Chopra “Don’t try to squeeze into a glass slipper, instead shatter the glass ceiling” only go on to show how people cannot be forced into stereotypes anymore. We bring to you modest stories about how breaking stereotypes is the newest trend on the block! Interior aesthetics that reflect ones persona is another such trend that seems to be making waves. Apart from this, we have your regular dose of all the happening places, restaurants, spas, movies and books and hot talk to satisfy your entertainment needs! Sit back and relax as you journey through this eventful issue we’ve put up! Our heartfelt thanks to every reader for sticking right by us! Cheers to the second last month of the year! Have a happy one!

OleHenriksen Counter Balance Oil Control Hydrator

Finding the right moisturizer when you have oily skin can feel like a game of Risk. But this lightweight lotion takes the guesswork out of the process, since it is specifically formulated with botanical mattifiers to soak up excess oil without breaking you out. Buy from: www.olehenriksen.com

Street Food

Every once in a while, Netflix comes out with a really badass food show, and Street Food is likely the winner for 2019. From David Gelb and Brian McGinn, the creators of the acclaimed series Chef’s Table, Street Food is a look at the dishes, traditions, and most importantly, the people behind the cuisine found in corners and openair markets in some of the world’s most vibrant cities. Watch on: www.netflix.com

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain Those wanting a proper sunshine holiday in October while technically staying in “Europe” are probably going to want to head to the Canary Islands. Tenerife is the largest of these islands and also the best choice for those who speak English rather than Spanish. The October weather is pretty much ideal and it comes after the months when Tenerife can really heat up a bit too much.

Diwali parties make way for a wide variety of people! While some attend them only for the crackers and food, some others dress up for the gram. But a vast majority make their way for the card parties and its favours ;)

Over a Cappuccino with

KAMINI SARAF Born to be an entrepreneur, she has carved her name in the business of fashion and has showed us how determination, time management and discipline can bring you closer to success. Get to know more about the one and only Kamini Saraf with this interview – What is a typical day like in Kamini Saraf’s life? So a typical day starts early in the morning, I hit the gym between 6 am to 06:30 am and get back home by 9 where I see and wind up the house work. Then I leave for work at 11 and my work shuffles between Manish Malhotra store, Angasutra and other works. After returning back at 8 in the night, I have dinner with my family and then I like watching TV or just having some leisure time which also includes finding out what’s happened in each other’s lives because that is the only time we get to catch up. Tell us something about yourself? I have a phobia with discipline. I am very disciplined, so when there is a meeting or any event, I am always there two minutes before time. It starts bothering me even if am a few 24 NOVEMBER, 2019 TULIP

minutes late. Whether it is my workout or the meals of the day, I lead a very meticulous life. I give my 100 percent in everything. I also have OCD, so I am a cleanliness freak. What does it take to be successful in the field you excel in? One factor is to be very forward thinking; you have to plan much in advance, be very diligent and make sure everything is done on time. To excel in my field, you should have a certain foresightedness about the things you want to execute. You should have an eye for detail and be committed to your work. Fast forward thinking, in aspects of forthcoming fashion, minute detailing or new colour palettes that you want to introduce to the city, is the key to being successful in my field.

Tell us a funny incident that happened recently with you? I’m a typical Saggitarian who also happens to be quite tall, so I feel like I speak carelessly and put my foot in my mouth before realising it. Recently, at one of my stores, I had a meeting with a client and a top designer. The client wanted the delivery to be done the very next day. I outrightly said “No we can’t do it”. But my designer was sensible and said okay. I blankly repeated “Not possible, we have other things lined up in our schedule” to which my designer replied again that he’d try and make it happen for sure. It was like a clash of words where my designer was trying to pacify the client and I was being stubbornly blunt, unable to understand why my designer was being so persistent when it clearly wasn’t possible.

so many scattered assignments on hand that it started to get really taxing for me. In 2005, I wondered if I could bring every small pop up to one platform and go from there. It started as a vision back then, but over time the vision materialised and today we have Fashion Yatra. We were the forerunners in exhibitions and that is how Fashion Yatra happened.

These incidents happen on the daily, where I’m totally blank and everyone around me is laughing at my weird outbursts. I call it Spade of Spades. That’s how I run into trouble. (laughs)

How do you manage work and personal life? WWe, as women, always find a balance between our work and personal life. We are born with an inbuilt ability to multitask, and I can pride myself in saying that it’s something I excel in- multitasking. You can ask my family, they absolutely adore me and my multitasking. In case there is a pooja at home, or any family function, it is never neglected. Likewise, at my work. Also because my day starts very early, so a lot of my thinking is done in the morning, I finish my thinking and organising of work, I prioritize my work by making a list of things to do and set time goals. I try not to over exceed the time, like sometimes during lunch time we sit back and take a breather and that’s okay but it shouldn’t happen often.

name it, we have worked with them. Now since most of the designers started opening their own stores, the focus of Angasutra has now shifted to the young gen and labels that are not accessible. So we basically have a blend of bigger labels which are unknown names which are very well priced but very pocket friendly. Also, now that the bridal wear is done by my many designers because there are many stores in Hyderabad, so we are shifting our focus to party dresses or the bridesmaid dresses or fashion for bride’s family and so on, so basically we are getting into this genre.

How did Fashion Yatra happen? Back in 1992, when I got married, there was a dearth of Fashion in Hyderabad. So I took it upon myself and started these small pop ups with people from Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkatta, for my own satisfaction. In 2001-02, there were

Rapid Fire Three things you don’t leave home without? My phone, some money and sunscreen on my face. Next holiday destination? Finland. Most recent fashion purchase? My most recent purchase is a bag, which is my favourite fashion purchase as of now. Are you a morning person or a night person? I am a morning person. Tell us something about Angasutra. How do you manage different designer brands? Angasutra started in 2014 and there is no designer brand that we didn’t host in Angasutra, whether an international brand or say Indian ones like Manish Malhotra, Rohit Bal, Falguni Shane, Monisha Jaisingh, you

Why Hyderabadis Love Jewellery The relation between a woman and jewellery has been existing since the time mankind was still evolving. Not necessarily gold or diamond, but jewellery started off with stones and metal and today we see thousand types of different jewellery and jewellery designs which, of course, is every woman’s dream! If women had a choice, they would have sealed an entire closet with their favourite type of jewellery or maybe a collection of all types of jewels. Following are few inspirational women whose love for jewellery has never been hidden. - By Sharmila Feroz

Sofiya Sujad, Artist I am not sure what kind of jewellery person I am, but I definitely know what kind I am not and that’s Jadau (laughs) Sorry! I like light, elegant and timeless pieces that don’t scream for attention. Not minimal, just enough.

Laxmi Reddy, Blogger I personally believe gold displays a warmth that is unmatched by other metals. I also love jewellery because it can be worn every season, during any time of day. If you have noticed, this fall season we have been integrating pops of gold into so many things, in addition to just jewellery. 38 NOVEMBER, 2019 TULIP

Padma Somireddy, Interior Designer

Traditional jewellery designs are something I love the most. I love the antique pieces with Kanchipuram sarees as I feel this type of jewellery makes the entire look very classy. Such traditional sets are a go to for the holiday season.

Geethika Kanumilli,

Fashion Designer I am a big fan of heritage jewellery especially Nizams style in particular. The one in the picture are diamonds and emeralds which are precious, beautiful and also gives a touch of elegance especially when donning a heavy attire. I also prefer uncut stones and emeralds depending on the occasion.

Rina Hindocha, Yoga Instructor I love boho style, so I always prefer oxidised jewellery. Oxidised jewellery creates a beautiful look with anything I team up with. They look equally stunning in sarees as they do with jeans. It exudes an old-world charm and does not contain the regular lustre or sheen of other metals but has a unique metallic texture that makes it look rare and antique.

Aria Krishnamurti, Blogger/Influencer As the wedding season comes to a blessed start here is me posing with one of my favourite emerald green pieces. It’s versatile and wearable especially considering the current season. TULIP - NOVEMBER, 2019 39

| FASHION

Andleeb Zaidi, Model My style is about keeping it minimal and elegant. I always prefer to wear only one piece of jewellery either statement earrings or chokkar necklace or sometimes stack finger rings to add more drama. These solitaire earrings and a solitaire ring are just perfect fit for my statement embellished cocktail dress.

Rekha Malpani, Homemaker Every piece of jewellery tells a story and mine is the fusion of emotions embedded in the string of pearls carving to form the most glistering poetry. Priya Suresh, Model & Image consultant Beauty is who you are, Jewelry is simply the icing on the cake! Jewelry should tell a story about the person who’s wearing it. I love classic pieces that are elegant but also make a statement. After all, there’s nothing like traditional Indian jewellery.

Tanvi Maheshwari, Creative Director I love this heirloom piece which was passed down to me when I got married! It looks stunning with pretty much all my Indian wear but I like for my jewellery to stand out , so I pair it with muted tones. The detachable pendant is an added bonus as well. 40 NOVEMBER, 2019 TULIP

Whats In a Name?

EXCLUSIVE |

Tulip talks to Harini and Rajive, proud directors of a well known agency in Hyderabad called Whats in A Name. Read through to know about their achievements, failures, good and bad days etc. How did ‘What’s In a Name (WIN)’ happen? Harini: Rajive and I have known each other since college. Few years after we graduated, we joined an Advertising Agency where Rajive was a Copywriter, and I was a Client Servicing Manager. Unfortunately, that agency was not releasing our salaries for 3 consecutive months. All employees were disappointed. And one fine day, Rajive told me that we should start our own agency. He asked me if I’d like to be a part of it. And I instantly said yes. Rajive: Back then we had no money, no business experience as we had both worked with varied companies in different capacities, and everything just seemed impossible. Though I had done my first business when I was in the Eighth Standard, it was a small effort from a pocket-money standpoint. So, the only thing we had was a dream and a lot of perseverance. We kept trying until we officially launched What’s In a Name (WIN) on the 13th of August 2019. How do you manage work and personal life? Harini: Well, all of my friends think I manage work and personal life perfectly, and I must say it takes a lot of effort. It’s a must for everyone I feel. We have to handle way too many things on a day to day level as a business owner, in Rajive’s and my case – we own multiple companies; in order to keep our sanity we need to take out time to watch movies, unwind over the weekend, short holidays, etc. It would be a conscious effort from my end to strike a work-life balance for years to come as well. Rajive: I think Harini does a fantastic job at that. I am yet to strike the right balance, though. It’s difficult being an entrepreneur, especially in our country. People find it to be all glam and fancy titles from the outside. But the kind of work, an entrepreneur, has to put in, is way beyond one can possibly imagine. As I have been an employee for 5 years, and an entrepreneur for 10 years, I can say this for sure. However, I am trying now to make sure that I disconnect from work once am home, at least for a couple of hours. It’s still work-in-progress though.

who’ve been with us since our inception! Especially in today’s day and age when Brand Owners go for Agency Shopping, every 2 months. Unfortunately, the judgement of some brand owners is so clouded that they don’t realise the amount of time they waste, and the negative impact it has on their brand. But it’s more of an ego-high where brand owners feel they are not just superior to an agency, but they assume that they are superior to their own brand as well. It’s a suicidal attitude. But it’s very common. Tell us about a challenge you faced at the agency and how you dealt with it? Both: One of the biggest challenges we faced was how some clients just wanted to exploit us because we were new and just 22 years old when we started. But a couple of years down the line, we realised that when a brand owner takes us on board, it should not matter how old we are. Also, we are not here to entertain people with their obnoxious fancies to exploit a young and new agency. So, we decided we will only work with people who respect our work. Even if that means we will remain a small agency for time to come. But the idea was to make sure that we give our best to a brand. And that can happen only when there’s respect in an association. What does it take to excel in your field? Both: Everything depends on knowledge. If you’ve worked hard to improve your knowledge, sensible people will see that and appreciate it too. If you are just about talks with no knowledge, the same set of sensible people will see through that as well. Then you can get clients only if you bribe the senior management of a company or clients who themselves need to up their game. And this knowledge is constant. You can’t say that you picked a few things last year, so you don’t need to equip yourself this year. You need to constantly read, learn, and execute stuff on your own. It all starts with Agency Owners.

What is your biggest professional achievement? Both: The fact that we survived for 10 long years with some clients

Cheers to the underdog; celebrating men There’s innumerable days to celebrate women from every walk of life, but how often do we celebrate men? And guess what? They don’t even complain about it! Synonyms of a man are usually ‘sacrificial’, ‘provider’, ‘care taker’, though they apply equally to women of today as well. But, why don’t we celebrate men? Why don’t we see them as the beautiful, tender souls that they are. Why doesn’t the world recognise them as an emotional beings, rather than strong, masculine, brave people who are not ‘supposed’ to display their extravagant emotions, just because it is not manly enough? Barring all this, let us celebrate men, let us make them feel important. It is the month of November, and it is only a month of celebrating the unsung heroes that are men. - By Tanvi Kesari

Avnish Kumar,

SPECIAL | Director of Neeru’s

Who is your inspiration? The fact that “A Father is the First Hero for every Son” is true for me. My father was Mr. Harish Kumar. Although he is not among us today, his absence makes me realise that I have been missing his “Personality” more than his Fatherhood. It gave me the clear sight of taking him as my inspiration in whatever I did or do. His abilities of hard work, humbleness, nature of giving and being a risk-taker have been my direction to lead the Entrepreneurial life. How do you manage the hectic workload at Neerus and your personal life? WORK LIFE BALANCE, the equation of maintaining that is always a challenge but somehow I feel I’m blessed with enough energy to maintain that theory. My friends often ask me how I have the time to be in every place that demands my presence; so I feel if one wills to do anything, its about the right balance of Time and energy that can make it happen. My work makes me a Globetrotter and I have to travel every other day, but I still feel one’s personal life is as much important. What does it mean to celebrate men to you? I have been celebrating Womanhood so

flamboyantly as it came with my Work - Heading a Women Wear Fashion Brand in the country. But having been surrounded by plenty of women in my family from having three sisters, five nieces and absolutely no nephews, mom and my wife, God has indicatedly indirectly to be empowering Women more. But celebrating Men is a much greater phenomena, as the rush fast paced life a man lives to make a lovely livelihood for his family and himself is commendable. If women are celebrated, then men should be too. How do you let go off stress? God has been kind in giving a life thats stress free. As I am spiritually inclined, we as a Family follow a Sect “Nirankari Mission” that stands for OneNess and Universal Brotherhood. The vibe around the mission and literature always de-stresses. In terms of physical activities- Travel, Driving and Music helps me de-stress through times and situations. Describe your work in One Sentence ? My Father being the founder of our brand NEERUS, always told me that the brand will be my family. But I now feel my work is now my only Child. I will always live this thought - “Work like a Labour, Live like a King” TULIP - NOVEMBER, 2019 43

Farhad Shahnawaz,

Actor/ Model

How did you start you career into modelling and acting? Well I was very thin and an introvert as a teenager. My brother was part of the modelling industry, which always inspired me. Later on, I was approached by a photographer who gave me an idea of test shoots. I found it very interesting to pose in front of of the camera. From then on, I took it up as a challenge, worked on my physique and grooming. In no time I found my self in Glad-rags. Why did this industry interest you in particular? The Glamour industry gives me a feeling of being larger than life. It challenges me constantly to look my best and give the best of my performances. Since I consider myself to be born with good genes, I found my path. How has your journey to success been? Its been a wonderful rollercoaster ride, I have been lucky to start my initial work with the top notch Indian and International designers and be showstoppers for fashion weeks. I also was featured in popular music videos like Jaagi Ankhon Mein Tu Hi Tu, and successful TV soaps like khichdi & sanskaar. Now, it is time to up my game as I step into the mainstream Telugu and Hindi cinemas. How do you juggle between acting and modelling? Well, modelling has been my first love and my claim to fame. But, I need to evolve in my career graph as well for which I shifted my focus on to acting and I am ready to challenge my ability to give the best of what the industry today needs. What does celebrating men mean to you? Men have always been celebrated and respected in our society, and for me respecting and building equality in our society for women is the true celebration for a complete man with substance.

Amer Beg,

SPECIAL | Professional Racer, go-kart champion

How did you find your interest in racing? Racing and driving has always been a part of me since I was an infant. I had a pedal car that I would drive around our house as a toddler. Both my parents are phenomenally talented behind the wheel and my father taught my brother, Samir Beg and me how to drive at the age of 9. Later, as a pre-teen, I had 2 elder cousins, Khurram and Kaunain Beg, that would talk cars and racing all the time which furthered my passion. What is your journey to success like? I’m not sure I can speak so much about success, but I can definitely speak about perseverance and dedication. Like most professionals you see a lot of downs but it’s that willingness not to give up and keep at it that makes one a champion. Why is go karting and racing not so popular in India? There’s a couple of reasons: firstly the stigma attached to racing being dangerous. I understand it is a little more dangerous than playing golf but we’ve come a long way to make it safer. Secondly, we need champions. Sania made tennis popular. Saina made badminton popular. We need to go further as a nation to back our race car drivers and its thanks to companies such as The Prestige Construction Group and the BVS Group that people like me are able to achieve our goals and strive for higher global success. India has a lot of interest in racing, we just need the right platform. Very soon, I’ll be starting my own karting program where I’ll personally be training people from as young as 4 to 50 to become racing champions! What is the one thing you wish people knew about your profession? I have always wished people could drive formula cars. It’s SO different from anything else you can drive. The G-forces, the acceleration, corner speeds. People think it’s easy but you need immense strength. For instance, for optimal braking we require 160l bs of force on just our left leg (we use left foot braking). There’s so

much involved in the science and effort behind the handles that, like many things, it’s hard to imagine without experience. What does it mean to celebrate men to you? This is a difficult one. I don’t think being a man or a woman for that matter needs to be ‘celebrated’, unless you consider yourself inferior or an underdog and have risen despite the odds. Gender equality is crucial and neither should be ‘celebrated’ in my opinion. If anything those that are carving out a safer and greener future for the generations to follow should be the one’s to be applauded and celebrated.

Jagan Mohan Raju,

SPECIAL | Site Leader, International Retail Company

How would you describe your Career Graph? My career graph is filled with vicissitudes but more importantly intense learnings from all that I worked with. I remember plunging in to startups at the same time working with organizations that had stable processes. I loved the autonomy I had and the opportunity to express myself was satisfying. What does success mean to you? Success in my opinion is doing what you enjoy the most. In everyone’s career, there are many stages and it evolves from working for your success to working for other’s success. As you progress in your life, building wisdom and offering, it to others is more accomplishing than anything else. Personally, if your career has brought happiness to you, you are certainly successful. How do you manage working with world’s number one company and manage time at home with your family? It is about being cognizant of the fact that “Work-life integration is essential” in today’s world. Work and Personal life are mutually exclusive and at the same time integrated well too. If one can bring lessons from personal life in to work and Vis a Vis, both stay in order. Most importantly, if you set the expectations on both fronts (work and family], and learn to accept the changes and challenges, you will be able to manage both seamlessly. That is exactly what I do to keep the balance. What does celebrating men mean to you? Love thyself. Be a man to support your friends and family. Show your emotions and softer side, but don’t hide them. Celebrate men that are successful and role models. What is the one thing that every man needs to know in life to embrace what he is? Introspection, self- awareness and surroundings are essential. One need to realize that not knowing everything and learning are constant endeavors of life. Being curious and open to learn from everyone around you will keep you motivated in life. Life is too short to be competitive always, it has to be cherished and enjoyed.

CHILDREN’S SPECIAL How to keep away children from negative influences... Zainab Fatima pursued her masters in ‘Child Psychology’ from Osmania University College for Women. She has been dealing with kids for the past 12 years as a pre- school teacher and a child counsellor. Here are few questions we asked her to know more about child psychology and how the world affects them. Children today don’t communicate very often with their parents, how can parent initiate a conversation with their children? Good communication with children involves listening well and talking in such a way that it encourages your child to listen to you. You can get better with practice. Focusing on body language and tone is really important. Communicating well with your children improves your bond with them.

both positive and negative effects. Not all television programmes are bad, but data shows that the negative impact of exposure to violence, inappropriate sexuality and offensive language are convincing. Studies show that parents play an important role in their child’s social learning, but if parent’s views are not clear with children, the medium may teach or influence by default.

Majority of children are too much into video games, like PubG, how can a parent take them out of such influence? Due to inadequacy of time and piling up of work load, parents resort to gadgets and small screens to engage their children. Gadgets are given to the children as a way to help kill their boredom. Instead why don’t we as parents look for new alternatives? Identify what your child is inclined towards and use it as a replacement for small screens. Help them develop hobbies. Engaging a child in household chores, outdoor games and by spending quality time with them can reduce their time with gadgets.

Parents, especially working parents gift their children with phones or tabs so that they don’t feel lonely and eventually get addicted to it. How can working parents form a healthy environment at home? Parents are the first teachers in their child’s life and play a pivotal role in shaping their lives. With the advent of family style where both the parents are at work, the parentchild relationship has also faced a positivenegative impact. By balancing few things here and there, working parents can form a healthy home environment. This can be done by adjusting job timings, having the child’s grandparents at home, keeping the children busy with their hobbies etc.

Television is also a major concern as children gets influenced by loud and toxic forms of content, how can a parent help in this process? Television has the potential to generate

Therefore, every parent whether working or non-working wants to raise a child who can contribute positively to the society. This can be done by making sure that they are dedicated to spending time with their kids on the daily.

Parental support plays a vital role, what kind of support does a child expect from their parents? Firstly, the main thing you need to understand is why your child needs you to be supportive. Being a supportive parent means not only having interest in your child’s best interests by heart but also being present, involved and helpful. Your child wants you to listen without judgement and understand their concerns and challenges. They expect you to acknowledge their achievements and support them through mistakes. Love, support and time from family make them feel safe and secure. Why is my child acting insecure? Children who perceive that attention given to them is taken away do not like the person responsible especially when it happens when all attention is focused on them. This is one of the major reasons for sibling rivalry and insecurity. Being away from parents for long periods, loud voices (arguments) in the house may also be a cause for insecure children. INTERIOR | The essence of interior design will always be about people and how they live. Be faithful to your own taste, because nothing you really like is ever out of style. It is about the realities of what makes for an attractive, civilized, meaningful environment, not about fashion or what’s in or what’s out. This is not an easy job. Sai Nath V Interior Designer

The word “Home” has become a very subjective term. Developing a concept from what the Client requires is the way to go. It all starts with the style of design, choice of materials and type of finishes which should be realized from the context. Any given home should be grounded in the PRESENT and should possess versatility to stretch into the FUTURE becoming a timeless Design. Elegant profiles, clean lines and vibrant textures accompanied with sober hues play a huge role in setting the character of any place. On functional aspects, Space saving furniture and Home Automation is the upcoming future improving the quality of life. Bhanu Prakash B Interior Designer, Ahalya Design Studio.

I like an interior that defies labelling. I don’t really want someone to walk into a room and know that I did it. The best rooms have something to say about the people who live in them. The details are not the details; they are the emotion and character of the person. That’s why it’s called a HOME and it represents an individual. Swetha V Interior Designer

The Interior design scene in my career of two-and-a-half decades plus hasn’t been better as there is a lot of work going on in residential and commercial sector. I am very pleased to see many young practices in Interior designing and Architecture are currently challenging themselves and practicing very cutting edge, trendy and quirky ideas. I also see a lot of focus on sustainable designs and young practitioners wanting to make the furniture using local craftsmanship. There are a lot of architects and designers using craft in their work as well as getting a lot of custom work done with emphasis on Make in India which is great for us in the future. In the coming years, we will see designers incorporating art into creating distinctive work bridging the gap between art and design”. Supraja Rao, Architectural Designer

With changing design trends and lifestyle of people, Decor trends in Hyderabad has evolved too. Stepping away from the techobsessed decor trends that I saw dominate the 2018 design trends, 2019 move towards fresh, natural materials such as stone, copper, concrete, and granite. Believe it or not, velvet was seen as old-fashioned and stuffy, and it’s now viewed as a luxurious and comforting fabrication. Also Like customized pieces as an interior designer I had noticed a shift in lighting and that more of our clients are partial to fixtures from local artists and small businesses alike to create unique environments. Artisan fixtures with a hand-crafted feel will better personalize your home, and like natural elements, they’ll help shift the eye’s focus around the room to create a comforting and inviting feel. Let the razor burns rest this November! #noshavenovember No shave November, a movement that began as something that men would do for the gram, or as a fun-tradition, took a positive turn when people realised the cause behind it. It is a movement to raise awareness about cancer, by growing out the body hair, without trimming, shaving or waxing it. Women can participate too, by embracing their body hair, without being insecure about it. We must consider ourselves lucky that our hair at least grows, unlike those who have to face the harsh after effects of chemotherapy. Eventually, the monthly expenses that would have been spent on grooming hair is donated to charity for cancer research foundations. While this is largely followed, and is more popular in the states, we have our men who not only participate in the no-shave November for a cause, but also purely for their own well-being. Because, for a lesser known fact, growing out the moustache and beard without trimming it frequently has several amazing health benefits for men. The facial hair acts as a natural toxin filter, it prevents the skin from blemishes, it is an inexpensive Givenchy scarf which shields your face from the cold of the November, and, lastly, it is the Bahubali against the sun. So many health benefits, only because you retain from trimming your facial hair for a month. Imagine keeping it natural for life? Let’s see what the men of Hyderabad have to say about it.

Abhinav Gomatam

Actor (known for Ee nagaraniki emaindi) Abhinav Gomatam, the actor who rose to fame with the coming-of-age buddy comedy movie Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi, has something to say about No-shave november. “No shave November is a pleasant ode to facial hair. I must share something about this though, No shave November is shavers, razors sitting idle and men growing facial hair. Humanity finally found something very simple to celebrate!”

Pranith Bramandapally

Film maker (known for Muddapappu Aavakaya, Nanna Kuuchi, and Suryakantham) Pranith Bramandapally who rose to fame with his hit web series and his 2019 feature film Suryakantham, shares his experience, too “It all started in my undergraduation, when a friend of mine told me about No Shave November. It sounded very interesting to me as I’m a total Beard Guy and I love Beard. It did not seem difficult for me to grow out my beard for just a month . While I did it for the challenge initially, it was only a little later that I came to know of the cause behind it. The money that I save up, which usually sums up to Rs. 500, I donate it to any one of the organisations working towards improving cancer treatments. Though a meagre amount, I still feel it might be of a value to someone else.”

Sumanth Tittu

Photographer For photographer Sumanth Tittu the goal of No-Shave November is “to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. Donate the money you typically spend on shaving and grooming to educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle.”

FEATURE | Manish Reddy

Model/Actor For Manish Reddy, who is a model, juggling between work, modelling and aspiring to get intofilms says, “No shave November was initiated to educate people about embracing hair growth in support of cancer patients. However, it has become a trend now. For me, personally, no shave November is about growing out a good beard, and not trimming the hair on my head. This adds a quotient of masculinity to my face and also covers up any irregular facial structure that I might have. It tests my patience, too, because, walking around with a beard that is not groomed, will undermine your confidence. But, the whole point of noshave November is to get over this insecurity and embrace yourself the way you are.”

Siddharth Kalki

Public Relations Manager According to professional public relations manager, Siddharth, “No-shave November refers to an annual charity event where men don’t shave, groom, or cut their facial hair for the entire month of November as a way of raising awareness and money to fight cancer. It is not a task that everyone can achieve during the journey. One might ‘have’ to shave it for a meeting, or the beard just gets too itchy and might compel to be shaved. Whatever the reason may be, the very thought of wanting to embrace your facial hair the way it is, without worrying about your appearance, makes you a winner. So, while you are still ‘thinking’ to grow out your hair, November is at its end. Instead of confining it to a month, do it whenever, however and wherever you want to, for as long as there is a thought of reason behind your head.”

Santosh Mohan Veeranki

(Founder, Tale Trellers Troupe and a film maker) Santosh Mohan Veeranki, the founder of one of the most successful clubs in Hyderabad, and a film maker says, “I took up the No-shave November twice, when I was in England. I think that it is a great initiative because, it acts as a good ice-breaker. For me, I didn’t know a lot of my colleagues at work, but the moment I started following the No-shave November challenge, a lot of us united and started off with small talks. Well, it felt better than isolating myself. This way, I was well acquainted with my work friends, and the work place on the whole. Towards the end of November, after my grungy beard went through a lot of unkempt attitude from me, I realised that everyone started smiling at me brightly, and there was a lot of joy, and I felt like I belonged to a community full of positive people. It might feel like a gimmick, but it does work. I am one of the best examples of a great fan of No-shave November, and I am all for it. However, since I am back in India, I have not done it. But, off late I do find myself interested in keeping a beard merely because I feel bored after going my razor through and through on my face.”

Level up your steering game! Automobiles that 2019 had in store for us: Gone are the days when we had to watch Hollywood stars drive the most luxurious cars in the movies and sit in the disappointment of not being able to own it, as they weren’t launched in India. Thanks to these companies, we have launch events of new super-powered cars and motorbikes every now and then. We’ve brought to you the best of the lot released in 2019, just in case you were planning to buy one and were confused. This list might help you have a clearer view.

Maserati Quattroporte

Italian car maker Maserati has launched the 2019 model of the Quattroporte luxury sedan in India. The updated car gets new colours, new wheel designs and more interior options, but still comes with only a diesel engine. The 2019 Quattroporte also gets a redesigned gearshift lever which Maserati claims will offer a more intuitive shift pattern, shorter travel and improved operation. It now gives the driver the option to switch between auto and manual modes of the 8-speed ZF transmission by shifting the lever from right to left. There’s also a new ‘P’ button to put it in park. It is launched in two variants- GranLusso and Gransport. Both are equally a delight toeyes. The changes have only made it tougher and better than before!

Mercedes-AMG G63

The new 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 is a real beast. It’s capable of reaching 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) from a standstill in just four seconds. Now that’s power! Probably the most impressive thing about the new G63 is its improved suspension with double wishbone independent front layout and adaptive adjustable damping. That not only improves its manners on pavement but also helps it retain its position as one of the most capable off-roaders. If you’re looking for a quick, attention getting SUV it’s tough to beat the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63.

BMW X1

Changes on the interiors and exteriors are quite subtle. The most noticeable change has to be the larger touchscreen (like the 10.25-inch unit on the new 3 Series) sitting atop the central console. The X1 gets either a 6.5- or 8.8-inch unit, depending on the variant. In India, it is available with 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines. While the diesel engine makes 190PS/ 400Nm with an 8-speed AT, the petrol engine is good for 192PS/280Nm with a 7-speed DCT. This BSVI-compliant petrol engine has been recently introduced in India. Earlier, the X1 was a diesel-only offering in the country.

Jaguar XJ50

Age - associate it with the car’s bloodline and it defines legacy. Associate it with a car’s model and that number can become a deterrent to its relevance within its segment. The Jaguar XJ finds itself at the crossroads of these two thoughts. Having served for over a decade now, the current XJ is ageing, albeit quite gracefully. To be precise, the XJ family has been around for over 50 years now and that number underscores a rich legacy with the Jaguar XJ50. Despite that enormous length, it is quite agile. The precision of its steering helps that cause and the grip from the Pirelli P Zero tyres only makes it better. At turn-ins the weight of this car is evident, but the fine-tuned mechanical grip makes life easy beyond that point.

Jeep Wrangler

The new-gen Wrangler is available only in the 5-door Wrangler Unlimited versionand as a CBU (completely built unit) model. Design-wise, the off-road SUV comes with the same butch and boxy silhouette that is signature to the Wrangler, with new modern elements. So, upfront, the SUV gets the iconic seven-slot grille flanked by classic round headlamps with LED units. It gets an updated dashboard with new features and a new UConnect infotainment system. The Jeep Wrangler is now considerably lighter than its predecessor. While the body is still made out of steel, the doors, bonnet and fenders are now made out of aluminium.

Baahubali Screening: Royal Albert Hall Reverberates With Scream

In it’s 148 year old history, Royal Albert Hall never witnessed a nonEnglish film being screened and for the first time ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ has done that feat. At a time when Telugu film industry’s representation is completely ignored at PM Modi’s special meeting with creative folks, SS Rajamouli made sure that the pride of Telugus resonates in London, UK. Not just the live-orchestra played the music of the film very well, but the Telugu fans attending the event have kept screaming, shouting, whistling, clapping, cheering and made all kinds of noise as if that is Satyam theatre in Hyderabad. This electric atmosphere explains the love of Telugu folks for cinema.

ENTERTAINMENT | Upasana, the hero!

By directly shooting out a pointer to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that his ways of ignoring South Film Industry’s representation at the Indian Film Industry meet have pained her, Upasana Kamineni became a talking point now. In the last two days, Telugu industry folks haven’t debated whether PM Modi’s meet with Bollywood folks in the name of “Indian Cinema Creators” is going to yield any result or just a PR exercise before the run up to Haryana and Maharashtra elections. But they are talking about the way mega daughter in law Upasana Kamineni stood up to the PM to demand what is due for us. It’s great of Upasana to raise her voice against the injustice being meted.

MOVIES Movie Reviews

War War is all sound and fury, a glossy globe-trotting thriller that goes haywire at every turn. It could have done with not just a major plastic surgery, but also several rounds of liposuction to rid it of its flab. That money has been generously spent in its making - it is a Yash Raj Films production after all - is obvious in the lavish mounting. Sadly, the screenplay is terribly sloppy. It takes recourse to absolutely arbitrary twists in its attempts to get the jigsaw pieces to fall into the right places. They never do. Starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff, War is all style and no substance. It settles into a series of long-drawn-out action set pieces and contrived plot sleights designed to give Hrithik and Tiger the room to go all out. This War is not worth fighting for. Only meant for the fans of Hrithik and Tiger.

Joker Jaoquin Phoenix!!! The man behind the face of Joker and an outstandingly talented actor. He is the one responsible for taking the movie by storm. It’s a character and a movie that’s liberated, entirely. Free to be whatever and whomever it choose. It’s a sad, chaotic, slow-burn study of someone who isn’t visible; who doesn’t even exist to the world around them. But your empathy, sympathy even, isn’t guaranteed, and it begins to dissolve as Arthur somehow moves even further to the edges. This is, we mustn’t forget, the story of how a villain was made. But what writer/director Todd Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver have written into life is the Joker as a character. What they and the film is interested in is the mental, moral, emotional, physical make-up of the man who became the Joker. Bold, devastating and utterly beautiful, Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix have not just reimagined one of the most iconic villains in cinema history, but reimagined the comic book movie itself.

Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy It is the story of Telugu freedom fighter Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy. The film presents the righteous crusader as an invincible superhero. Chiranjeevi, returning to action after a long hiatus, plays the role with aplomb. In the scenes that matter, his presence is electrifying. He pulls off the action sequences with the sort of enthusiasm which actors half his age would be proud of. The cast of hundreds is peppered with several other quality actors who serve to prop up the film without getting in the way of its principal purpose. If everything in the film seems a touch overstated, it is clearly not unintentional. But some more restraint may not have undermined the impact that the director is seeking to make. The major flaw of Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy is that it’s too formulaic. You can almost guess what’s going to happen and with a runtime of 2 hours and 47 minutes, the film is a tad bit long. The cameo by Anushka Shetty seems forced. It is as though she has been thrown into the movie only to sing praises of Narasimha Reddy.

BOOKS Into the water by Paula Hawkins

Jules Abbott, the heroine of bestseller Hawkins’s twisty second psychological thriller, vowed never to return to the sleepy English town of Beckford after an incident when she was a teenager drove a wedge between her and her older sister, Nel. But now Nel, a writer and photographer, is the latest in a long string of women found dead in a part of the local river known as the Drowning Pool. As Nel put it, “Beckford is not a suicide spot. Beckford is a place to get rid of troublesome women.” Before Nel’s death, the best friend of her surly 15-year-old daughter, Lena, drowned herself, an act that had a profound effect on both Nel and Lena. Beckford history is dripping with women who’ve thrown themselves—or been pushed?—off the cliffs into the Drowning Pool, and everyone—from the police detective, plagued by his own demons, working the case to the new cop in town with something to prove—knows more than they’re letting on. Hawkins (The Girl on the Train) may be juggling a few too many story lines for comfort, but the payoff packs a satisfying punch.

Fly Me by Daniel riley

Flying the friendly skies in the 1970s was definitely an adventure, what with all those skyjackings, as Riley demonstrates in his first novel. Suzy Whitman is a stew working out of Sela del Mar, a coastal community near L.A. The year is 1972, and Suzy, upon graduation from Vassar, has impulsively followed in the footsteps of her older sister, Grace, a stewardess with Grand Pacific Airlines whose husband, Mike, is a magazine writer who wants to be the next Tom Wolfe. Riley employs a Wolfean methodology in bringing to life the stoner vibe of the time through curated period details, marred by some anachronisms. While skateboarding on the 4th of July, Suzy meets Billy Zar, a local weed dealer, who tricks her into using her position with the airline to smuggle harder stuff for him. A family health crisis forces Suzy into a life of crime that, in the end, leaves her with only one desperate way out. Throw in Jim Jones’s nascent religious cult and a backstory involving Scientology, and the result is an overstuffed novel that reads like the fictional equivalent of Brendan I. Koerner’s study of the ’70s skyjacking phenomenon, The Skies Belong to Us.

Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan

Pulitzer-winner Egan’s splendid novel begins in 1934 Brooklyn as Eddie Kerrigan struggles to support his wife and two daughters, one of whom is severely disabled. He finds work as a bagman, ferrying bribes for a corrupt union official. One day he brings his healthy daughter, Anna, to the Manhattan Beach home of Dexter Styles, a nightclub owner with underworld partners. The 11-year-old can’t comprehend their business, but she senses that the two men have become “friends.” By the time Anna is 19, Eddie has inexplicably vanished and America is in the Second World War. Working a dull job inspecting ship parts at the Brooklyn Naval Yard, Anna seizes the opportunity to become the first female civilian diver there. Around the same time, a second encounter with Dexter Styles raises hopes that he can help untangle the mysteries of her father’s disappearance. As the stories eddy through time, Egan makes haunting use of shore and water motifs to balance dense period detail and explore the liminal spaces–between strength and weakness, depth and surface, past and future, life and death–through which her protagonists move. More straightforwardly narrated than some of Egan’s earlier work, including the celebrated A Visit from the Goon Squad, the novel is tremendously assured and rich, moving from depictions of violence and crime to deep tenderness. The book’s emotional power once again demonstrates Egan’s extraordinary gifts.

PICKReading A CARD November 2019 Clear your mind, take a few Deep breaths and concentrate on the 3 cards in front of you with the below question in mind: “What are my intuitive/psychic gifts?”

Now choose one card and look below for the answer to your question:

CARD 1

CARD 2

If you chose Card 1:

You are a deeply intuitive person and your gifts are many! If u have not yet realised or paid attention to them then you can tap in if you want to. You are deeply and strongly intuitive and might have strong gut feelings, visions, automatic writing, clairvoyance or deep religious and spiritual knowledge. You are a master in this realm but you probably keep this hidden since the world does not understand. You have had many past lives training in the esoteric arts and this is the reason you are the way you are. Never ignore your intuitive hunches because this might be your God self-speaking!

CARD 3

this makes you have highly developed “clairs” chief of them maybe clairvoyance. But you lose track of time when connected so do set a timer when meditating and also do protective meditations. You are a medium and your channelling abilities are highly developed and you might even have seen people after they have passed over. Do not analyse and judge or get scared. You are gifted!

If you chose Card 2:

You are an innocent and quite pure at heart and your gifts might be angel communication, intuitive flashes, healing and optimism. Spirit guide contact is something you have always sensed and this is your strongest gift, an ability to understand the 5th dimension with the faith of a child. You might get eureka moments of insight and intuition and might have well developed clairvoyance and clairaudience. You are however of the earth 3 dimension and you tend to heal people or become a sort of counsellor as you make your way through the world. But you have a very strong connect with the angelic realm, so just believe it!

Stay tuned in future for more “Pick a card” readings!!!You are welcome to write to us about what other questions would you like the cards to answer!

If you chose Card 3

You are a receptor or a universal transmitter of messages and knowledge. You have the ability to go into trance and flow with the universal energies which makes you a vessel for spiritual insight. You could be someone who gets hypnotised very well and travel dimensions and realms previously unknown of, probably in your dreams. You have an ability to surrender to a higher power and
