Kobe Sizzlers – The Sizzle Paradise The new joint has opened in our city; it’s been there at various countries abroad and cities in India too. We had a chance to visit the place and try our hands on the luscious food which they offer. The interiors of the place are subtle; giving you a nice feeling when you enter the restaurant. We grabbed a table and ordered our starters with garlic cheese bread, the chunk pieces of cheese over the bread took our hearts away, it melted as soon we had our first bite. Followed by the sizzling chicken steak in the main course, accompanied with pepper sauce, mashed potatoes and assorted veggies. We also ordered an exotic veg sizzler which consisted of varied exotic veggies, mushroom patty, garlic sauce and fries. The sizzling noise was tingling when the sizzlers arrived on the table in front of us. We also tried their butterscotch flavored fruit ice cream which was a an enchanting dessert, completing our meal. Address: Opp. Film Nagar Temple, Next to simply south. Contact: 9966667862

A compilation of all things we are obsessing over this month
Riverdale
The Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics, Roberto Aguirre- Sacasa was thoroughly involved in the process that turned Archie from a beloved comic series into a swoony suburban teen drama. The first season of the CW’s comic book adaptation, pulling inspiration from Archie Comics, Riverdale was full of surprises. It was disgusting and delightful, with a possibility so bizarre, most people’s brains would never arrive there without help. The biggest brain twister of the Riverdale finale was the fate of Archie’s father, Fred Andrews, who was shot during what seemed to be a robbery. Now, the Riverdale season 2 which premiered just five months after the season 1 finale, picks up moments after Fred was shot, and spends much of the episode balancing the drama of Fred’s fate, as well as Archie’s own emotional response to the events in the diner, with establishing the new, darker mystery of the show. Great cinematography, effortless performances and an intriguing storyline, you’re sure to be watching this with a bated breath.

One of Europe’s most beautiful cities is internationally renowned for its baroque architecture and scenic Alpine surroundings. It also enjoys a special fame in the world of music as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, fame reflected in attractions such as the museum in the home of his birth and various festivals showcasing his music. A city with a burgeoning arts scene, wonderful food, manicured parks, quiet side streets where classical music wafts from open windows, and concert halls that uphold musical tradition 365 days a year. Everywhere you go, the scenery, the skyline, the music and the history send your spirits soaring high. Areas of narrow, medieval streets and arcaded courtyards just begging to be explored. Plan your next trip to Salzburg and experience the beauty of this picturesque, romantic old town.
A few people in town have been boasting of their “friendships” with a number of A-list celebrities. They’re going as far as using words like “my buddy” to show their so-called close bond with them! Some of these may be genuine, no doubt, but, are all of them true or as fake as the people who are making such claims?

How did you come up with this idea? I’ve always been fascinated by cars and automobiles. Self-driven car rentals didn’t gain much traction in India mostly because the infrastructure isn’t the way it should be and due to the tremendous increase in the cost of manpower and with more people ready to try different things, this was the right point to start. Us being us, we didn’t want to give people the cheapest model variant. We wanted to offer them something that they could look forward to, something they could strike off their bucket list; and that’s how we started renting out exotic cars and supercars, eventually introducing motorbikes and bicycles.
How has the journey been so far? This has helped me grow as a person and I get to learn so many new things every day. I’m really fortunate that our customers have acknowledged our work and inspire us to do better. Since we started, I think we’ve come quite far but there’s still a long way to go. What is next for you? Besides Hyderabad, Driven is in Vishakhapatnam and Vijayawada and now we’re prepared to branch out to Chennai and Pune within the next two months and to another six cities in around 18 months. We’re also planning to continue having the element of the human interface so it’s

It’s hectic sometimes but really fun because it’s something that I truly love. What is Driven café like? We wanted to offer our customers a place

It’s a one of a kind place, unlike anything you’ve ever seen or experienced. What cars and motorbikes do you offer? COVER STORY
Children’s Day Out
From being the easiest topic to write an essay on to being one of the most fun days in school, Children’s Day certainly holds a special place in all our hearts. We often wish it were possible to hit control-alt-delete on our lives and relish the opportunity to be a child again and live life vicariously with reckless abandon. You still have a chance to do it if you are a parent. Having kids lets you reset the game. You now have an excuse to do all those silly things that kids do. How? You’re a parent and you’re trying to entertain your kids! We’ve asked some of these lucky parents how they plan to spend this Children’s Day with their rug rats! Whether your kid needs a place where he/she can burn off their energy (without tearing the house down) or wants to spend time learning more about animals or loves to splash around in the water, we’ve got you covered. Here are some of the best places in town where you’re sure to have a happy and fun-filled day with your little monster! - By Rabica Zulfiqar

Deethya and Dhyuthi along with my business partner, Amrutha Rekha’s daughter Nimisha, love watching videos of Peppa Pig! Their optimistic attitude and extremely caring nature always manages to put a smile on my face. Being super creative and fun-loving they can spend hours playing in the sandpit! This Children’s Day, we’re going to be spending our time at Jac N Jil, where they can enjoy playing the various games available for kids and have lots of fun!
Mohit Verma
Children are the purest form of love and this Children’s Day is rather special for me as it would be the first one with my daughter, Tia. I plan to take her to the zoo and then to the kid’s zone at the mall and spend some quality time with her. Earlier we used to go for a lot of cultural programs but my daughter would be too young to enjoy the experience. We will also be spending the evening with our family. As children are the bright sunshine of the future, we, as parents, we must make sure to give them immense care, love and righteous guidance till they are able to self-sustain. Their innocence makes us pure again and makes one forget all of the evils one has gone through. If we want our children to grow in a positive and successful manner then giving them good worldly education and humanitarian morals is crucial as they are the future of the nation.
Mania Khan
Zayan is one of those kids who is extremely caring. He loves to share his happiness with others and has suggested we go to an orphanage this Children’s Day because he wants to give away toys and chocolates to make the kids there feel extra special. When I see him being so compassionate, I feel really proud as a mom and it gives me a great, positive outlook on life.
Varun Akhnoor
Life is a full circle and it’s correct to the T that children are a reflection of their parents. I cannot possibly imagine a world without you in it now, my princess. You have with your tiny little hands and legs and the nonstop babbles smitten me over about 1000 times a day. There was a time when I used to eagerly wait for Children’s Day celebrations where we were rewarded with chocolates but now for the very first time I am celebrating it with you. This Children’s Day I would love to spoil you a lot more than before and capture and treasure all the beautiful memories because you for sure are growing up into someone more pretty and perfect. As I look back into how incredibly you’ve grown in the last 11 months, it nearly gives me shivers. I wish that you become someone you’ll be proud of, Mihika! Love, daddaa.

SPEND LIKE SAVVY Saving is a beneficial skill that can be used for the rest of your life. Most college students are living on a budget these days, if you don’t, you are likely to fall into a debt cycle. While saving is neither fun nor easy, it can make you smart about the way you spend your money. Also, know that there is a difference between being cheap and being spending savvy. This way you can learn budgeting skills and become more independent after graduating. Learning about budgeting at an early stage helps you understand how to handle responsibilities and also develops a mindset of accountability. Here are few points that can help you save.
1. Establish goals, It could either be for a trip or to buy a new gadget. Without goals, your money will go all over the place. Take control of your money by having a clear reason to establish a budget. If your goal is to visit a place then make a budget list and try saving money for that trip. 2. Know your expenses, going out to eat at odd hours, buying new clothes; constant tech upgrading and endless amount of consumer goods are all available. Your goal should be to prioritize each product or service according to how important it is to you. Also, know the difference between what you want and what you need. Write down your expenses in your diary or smartphones. 3. Shop where they offer discounts. 4. Sell what you no longer use or need. They are websites like OLX,
Elanic and Spoyl app where you can sell your clothes and gadgets. There are even stores where you can sell your used furniture or tech items and more. 5. Saving money is an important habit and it is best if developed in early years. Save a minimum amount of money every month based on what amount you get, it doesn’t matter if the monthly money is not substantial. What’s important is that, a percentage of money is being saved. Do not spend all of the money you have as soon as you get it. 6. Be aware of your resources and expenses, knowing the difference between needs and wants is critical for personal financial management. It doesn’t matter if you are in college; develop a positive habit of accounting. By developing these habits you will be ready to face the challenges of life after college.
“Saving is very important in a student’s life. What I would suggest to save money would be to always share things which you buy, especially groceries when you stay separately with friends and whenever you go out to have lunch or so you can split the bills equally with an app called split-wise it is always helpful and keeps a track of the amount you owe to any of your friends. Secondly, it would be good if you always do some research and homework of your own before you buy any electronics or any accessories as such. We could always keep track of our expenses depending on our previous month’s expenditure and try to avoid spending on not so important stuff.” Apps that can be used: split-wise, fudget and dollarbird. I personally believe that keeping track of your expenses and savings is a major priority in a student’s life.” Apps that can be used: Apps like Money view; Money Manager helps us in this smart phone era. Nishita (Architecture Student)
“My father used to give me a certain amount of money on 1st of every month and I had a target of saving 20% of it and spend it at the end of the month on anything that is on my wish list. Apart from that I used them for gifting my loved ones on their birthdays as well.” Drushti (Degree graduate)

“My method of saving money would be to have cash in our wallets only when needed and use card only when it’s necessary. The other thing which I usually do is to check on Zomato to see various offers that are available at different restaurants when dining out. This way I use my money more efficiently.” Santan Teja (Engineering Student)
“These days saving money is very important. After I get my pocket money every month, I put some amount aside or drop it in my piggy bank and use the rest of the money on myself or buy some college stationary and also on food . According to me saving money helps us in future and I think it’s a good habit to develop and inculcate.” Dikshita (Architecture Student) TULIP - NOVEMBER, 2017 33

Break free with

HYDERABAD!
Doesn’t life get a little boring sometimes? Working everyday and living a life full of routines gets pretty mundane and wearisome. The motor heads, writing aficionados, poetry lovers and adventure freaks have managed to change the rhythm of the city by coming up with clubs to release stress and gain bliss by doing what they’re most passionate about. These fanatics weren’t going to let anything stop them from doing what they loved the most! Here’s a sneak peek of these incredible groups who are ready to overcome any challenges thrown at them, to not let go of what they feel so deeply about and break free from the monotonous life. love and respect. The membership is like the flow of a river. The group is the river, its members, the water that’s in constant flow. Amitabh Tiwari and Akila, along with others, lead the poetry group agendas currently. We needed a place to meet which was silent, easily accessible and safe for women members. Mr T. Muralidharan, the Chairman of TMI Group and Gita Madam, who heads GP Birla Centre and Mrs Nirmala Birla, have been kind enough to lend us their spaces to hold our programmes such as the Hyderabad Huddle.
Twin City Poetry Club Rajesh Kumar’s love affair with poetry started at a very early age. It was easier for him to distil how he experienced his life into poetry than to talk about it. When he couldn’t find any online forums for Poetry, he created “Secunderabad Poetry Club”, on the Meetup App, which was later changed to “Twin City Poetry Club”. The co-founder, Satyavathi, made the group believe in a future and others brought in leadership, continuity, and sustainability. This platform provides an alternate, personal identity to its members. Did you face any challenges? Creating and sustaining any movement has it’s own challenges. Every group has a distinct culture of its own and at TCPC; we promote a “cosy culture” as the poets tend to be shy and sensitive and like any other closet artists, would not like to expose their work to a judging audience but would want to be treated with 34 NOVEMBER, 2017 - TULIP

How has the response been? Incredible. Mehar Singh Chauhan’s first appearance was an exhilarating moment. When Gireesh Raju first recited his Telugu poems, we could hear hitherto unheard rhythms and beats in native poetry. We now have over 750 registered members. Best experience? When we published the first issue of “Lakdi Ka Pul- the Poetry Bridge”, an international anthology we release every year. Favourite poets? In-house: Amitabh Tiwari, Mehar Singh Chauhan, Anirudh Eka, Javed. Others: Kipling, Lous McNeice, Neruda, Yeats, Whitman. Describe a typical day with the club. A typical huddle starts with an introduction by new members amidst cheers and encouragement, followed by a round robin of recitations with feedback being provided where requested. Filtered coffee and samosas are accompanied by another round of recitations. The best part about it? Every time a young member walks in and speaks about being a poet, our hearts are filled with immense pride. Contact: Rajesh Kumar: +91 9704107772 No membership fee. Meetup is held once a month.
FEATURE Nikhil Paul along with Anoop Pamu decided to start “Motovation Track Days” when they saw a dearth of motorcycle schools. Most of them charged upwards of Rs. 20,000 to a lakh per session and most of them aimed at racing and getting faster. As over 80% of the population uses two-wheelers to commute, it makes more sense to make them safer than faster. It was aimed at being affordable and accessible, to remain not for profit and promote road safety. Their youngest and wildest teammate, Mihir Chadha, who passed away in a tragic road accident after a few months of starting “Motovation” back in 2015, this, people start to take two-wheeler safety as seriously as 4-wheeler safety.
made them push harder to get people safer on the roads. Did you face any challenges? It’s a huge hit on people’s ego and confidence when they’re told that what they’ve been doing for years is incorrect. It takes a lot of effort from our side to coax them into accepting what we teach. The police do not understand that what we do is riding in a supervised, controlled environment. We’ve been shut down several times for trivial reasons, such as racing, causing public nuisance and once because we refused to bribe them. People are still warming up to the idea of motorcycle gear and don’t own any when they come to us. We spend our money to buy gear which gets damaged, and since we want to stay affordable, we usually never recover the cost. Riding is a continuous learning process, to get better, safer and more confident; you need to practice and the safest place to do that is at a track which people fail to realize. People think that running a school like we do is extremely profitable, it isn’t. How has the response been? Phenomenal. It’s been over 2 years and more than 500 people have come to our sessions. We’ve had some move on to racing, while others swear that a couple of sessions changed how they ride. People come back to tell us that they haven’t had an accident since they’ve taken our sessions. A lot more schools are cropping up, taking a cue from us and making their training more affordable. Due to

What are the various types of events organized? We organize different events aimed to make you a better overall rider. Our regular track days are for those who want to sharpen their riding skills and become safer, more confident riders. Sessions at larger tracks such as MMRT (Chennai) & Kari Motor Speedway (Coimbatore) are for those who want to push the limits of their skill and maybe pursue a racing career. The common forms of racing are usually track racing and rallying. The fact that rallying lasts too long and the results aren’t announced immediately takes the fun out of it. On the other hand, drag races are a lot less time consuming, the results are out immediately and the exuberance is maintained. This gave Mr Mahesh C. Raman and Dr I. Venkat Rao the idea to come up with “Speedway Motor Sports”. How has the response been? The response has been phenomenal with people coming in from all over the country.

What are the various types of events organized? There are mainly two events. Events such as Auto Cross involve obstacles. The cars and bikes go in turns and whoever completes the obstacle course the fastest, wins. However, there are different categories as some bikes are 100 cc, some 200 cc and 1000 cc so prizes are given out accordingly. There are also three-day events where day one is documented “Drag racing gives registration. The participants are asked to provide their registration papers, licenses and also their blood group you and adrenaline in case of an emergency. As safety is of utmost importance, rush unlike ambulances, fire trucks are also present at all times during the anything else.” event. Around 300-400 participants line up the next day for trial runs. People participating for the first time get a gist of what the race is like and can watch and learn from the other experienced drivers. The final run is on the third day. It’s more like a MotorSport festival as there’s music, DJs, emcees and food courts. Drinking, however, is strictly prohibited, again due to safety reasons. Prize distribution takes place in the evening.

The last event was held at Jakkur Aerodrome in Bengaluru. Contact: speedwaymotorsports.in No membership fees.
FEATURE for about an hour, read out our write-ups, based on the writer’s discretion and obtain feedback and critique on them along with excellent coffee! Favourite writers? Haruki Murakami, Amitav Ghosh, Ruskin Bond, Mullapudi Venkataramana, R.K.Narayan, John Grisham, Isaac Asimov (off the top of my head). The best part about it? When somebody first walks into Write Club, they are greeted with a warm bunch of like-minded strangers. The rules are simple. When writers have absolute freedom, they create masterpieces. The inhibition of judgement only occurs when you’re expected to conform to a certain standard. We at Write Club, offer complete freedom of thought and impose no restrictions. We also ensure the comfort and willingness of writers who join us – at each and every step. The group strongly believes in the policy of no-judgement and pure authenticity. And we, even as a critique group, maintain that Write Club Hyderabad is as non-judgmental as it can get and as welcoming as it can be. When the fear of judgement is no more and honest critique comes to play, the group empowers itself and the writer grows.
A member of Write Club, Bengaluru, after moving back to Hyderabad, explored and rummaged through all the meetup options and could find no group collectives for the writers of Hyderabad. The writer in her that demanded motivation and critique, pushed Sravanthi Talluri to start Write Club Hyderabad. She believes “the more you write, the better you get”. Did you face any challenges? I wouldn’t call them challenges but what I was concerned about was the place to meet, the crowd and the funding. As I wanted to keep the meetups open and free, finding a place for the same and somewhere to meet regularly was critical. Finally, I found Lamakaan. Now, we meet up at Phoenix Arena as the ambiance suits excellently for our creative heads. I was worried if I could reach out to the writers in Hyderabad. The first meetup was a pleasant surprise for me as 11 people showed up. The number increased to 25-30 as the meet ups got more consistent. Initially, the meetups were self-driven so we didn’t need funding. But as the prospects of book publishing and expansion came about, we had to have a base in funding. For us to continue with our status quo, we came up with a subscription model, wherein each new writer can attend 3 free trial meetups and later, be a member to attend meetups further. By means of membership fees and book royalties, we survive and maintain our current status quo. How has the response been? It has always been beyond our expectations and great! When we started off, it was 11 focused writers penning their thoughts on a first experience, at the balcony of Lamakaan, under the bright April Sun. Now when I look back, we’ve reached out to more than 1500 writers online and offline with an average of at least 30 people coming by each Saturday. Come rain - come sun, Write Club has been maintaining itself and helping more and more writers by the week.

“When writers have absolute freedom, they create masterpieces.”
How did you find your passion? I had the passion to write since I was a 16-yearold kid. It started off with a few poems for special occasions like birthdays of friends. Slowly, writing became a way of expression for me. I studied at The Mother’s Integral School. My early inspirations for writing, the love for the language were drawn there. As I went ahead with life I became
a software engineer and up until the age of 21, I hadn’t taken up writing to be any more than a hobby, a personal vent out space. In 2013, I moved to Bangalore. I met many like-minded
people at Write Club Bangalore. And my simple hobby turned into an ambition. I enjoyed my time at Bangalore, at the group thoroughly. I loved the idea of a hangout group that could help me improve how I wrote. I wrote regularly, learned a whole lot and at that point, I was prepared to make writing my identity. The main motive is to test your physical and mental limits by taking yourself well beyond your comfort zone and to enjoy the raw danger, beauty, breathtaking sights, and to experience something only a few people ever do in their lifetime. How has the response been? Initially, it took a gigantic movement, later there had been a phenomenal riposte from all my peers and well-wishers. Interestingly, 80% of this group are debutants with a zeal factor which pushed them to the next level of endurance aspirers. What are the types of activities organized? Our activities include Hiking, Bouldering, Caving, Rock Climbing, Rappelling, Australian Rappelling, Zip Line, 40 Ft jump, High altitude trekking to The Himalayas, Nature exploration, Night treks with camping and much more. Did you face any challenges? The endurance stream itself starts with a challenging element. Yes, we did face a lot of challenges like crossing the frozen water streams, walking against heavy snow fall, and defending the wind at 40 miles per hour. One must walk at least 20 km every day to reach the camp site.

The stage is open for all and yes, girls take the major part of inspiration despite the low headcount when compared to boys/men. Having said that, they stood as brave as any man on the deck. What was your best experience? Precisely, every second that I spent is the best experience so far. I have covered Hampta Pass (15,400 ft.), Rohtang Pass (13,050 ft.), Dalhousie Trek (Minus 12 degrees), Goa Forest Expedition, Sar pass (13,800 ft.), Mount Kanamo summit (19,600 ft.). Of all these expeditions, one proud moment for me was when I scaled the summit of Mount Kanamo in the month of June 2017. I made it in one day without acclimatization session and with a dream to conquer it, which came true. Contact: Shravan Kumar: +91 9642887722 No membership fees.

Yours truly, Organic gardening
The new trend in town is organic gardening, but it should have been something that started long ago. If you have been trying to eat organic and sort of “failing” at it because of the sheer amount of pesticides in your food, then organic gardening is your solution. Start off on your rooftop or begin a kitchen garden, it’s quite easy, even for those who aren’t green thumbed. From celebrities to bloggers, everybody is obsessed with organic gardening ;it’s easy, accessible and gives you the loveliest of produce. It is absolutely worth it to organically garden at home, its food at your fingertips, food that gives you everything you need, it doesn’t droop sadly, it doesn’t look rotten and neither is it coated with wax. Organic gardening helps you gain an insight into farming at a smaller and simpler scale. It requires a minimal amount of tools, however, it does require your utmost care and love in it’s beginning stages, after a couple of months, an organic garden settles down and takes care of itself.
What can I do to start an Organic garden? - Make your plant bed
Organic gardening has its own set of perks, besides the fat that you get fresh food, it also means that you get to eat from a wider array of vegetables, like bokchoy, kale, morning glory, the list is never ending once you try your hand at it. It seems to be like everybody in Hyderabad has climbed aboard the organic train, here is Sheetal Malvay, an organic lover and a very healthy eater. She loves discovering new things about plant life, the kind of vegetables that you can grow in Hyderabad and tends to her plants. Here is her take on organic gardening! “Mother Nature has her own way of providing for every living being. Simple organic food is the nourishment of one’s mind body and soul. The organic revolution has brought about a major shift in one’s perception of food agriculture farming and preserving our environment. Organically grown vegetables have a higher content of beneficial nutrients such as antioxidants as compared to your chemically treated conventional food. The quality of soil remains rich because of manure used and are less of a threat to our environment. I believe in healthy living. Growing your own vegetables not only ensures the health of your family but brings peace and tranquillity in your life!” Organic gardening in Hyderabad is simple, you can start off in your yard, balcony or your rooftop, the area that you grow your vegetables in does not need to be spacious, it should just receive an ample amount of sunlight (depending on whether they are shade plants). Give your plants space and time to grow as the first steps of germination are delicate. In the first couple of stages of germination, water them in minimal amounts once a day. When buying your seeds, ensure that they are seasonal seeds or seeds that can grow all year
round, choose vegetables that are in season. Choose wisely. Instead of using pots, using larger pit like planters, perhaps try Pepperfry, Hometown, Snapdeal or Amazon. I know it sounds a tad bit complicated and complex, but it will get easier with time when the garden settles in and gets used to its surroundings. Research about the seeds you have bought for planting instructions, the amount of water they require, the sunlight they need and whether they need any special care. With these little tips, you can climb aboard the organic gardening train with ease, start off now and live happier and healthier. Imagine an organic meal with exotic vegetables on a Saturday night with a glass of nice chilled, sounds heavenly, doesn’t it? Try your hand at organic gardening, it is absolutely worth all the weeding and attention!

There are many reasons to check our phones daily on an hourly basis but, but all that technology isn’t always good for the brain and you’d be surprised by how often you check your devices when you don’t even need to. If you have never taken a digital detox before, maybe it’s time to start. Some people might think its unnecessary while others may genuinely believe they will not be able to stop no matter how hard they try. Detoxes of all kinds are in the wellness community, while popular food-based detoxes can be beneficial to help cleanse your system and reboot your energy, take an honest look at what it means to be connected to technology 24/7. When you begin to address your need to be online at all times, that’s when you start making healthier choices in every area of your life. Earlier when the use of technology was much less, people would have a healthy conversation as compared to now, people text each other rather than actually talking. Contemplate the last time you were out with a group of friends and how often you or someone has checked his/her phone. Even in a social situation, you reach out for your phone (emergency calls excluded), you are checking out of the present moment rather than spending time with the actual person in front of you. These days kids are more into playing games on tabs rather than spending time playing outside, which is making them less creative and eventually becoming lazy but whereas, in earlier days kids used to play outside with friends or do some kind of activity which helped them

be more creative and active, they also had the ability to interact and socialize. As the pace of the digital world is growing there is an expectation that we answer all forms of communicationas soon as possible and participate online around the clock. If this will feel like an off-balance to you and it will, doing a digital detox will help you prioritize your life and get back in tune with your rhythm instead of rushing around. Take a step back from the noise and tune into what really matters to you. Do a digital detox for a few hours in a day and you will be surprised with the outcomes. Think about the time where you traveled to a new place and the perspective you gained from the experience. A digital detox is the same by unplugging these lines of communication you see things differently and tap into deeper levels of creativity. Digital detox is a way to help you repair your relationships and also helps you connect to the world in a better way. While you decided to do a digital detox here are some tips that can help you keep yourself away from your phone. Get a non-digital hobby. Exercise, create a reading wish list and check them off after you finish a book, go out for a walk during the times in a park that you’re most likely to scroll through your phone. Take yoga classes, learn cooking if you don’t know how to cook, spend time with your friends and family. When you are going on a holiday try to avoid mobiles and live in the moment. You would be glad and refreshed by following these rules of the digital detox.

Today our life is online. If an event hasn’t been posted, it never happened. The idea is to optimize the digital usage, not eliminate it.The idea is to reconnect with yourself, your family and the environment. I made a habit of not checking my phone when with friends or family and I think it’s good to go on a digital detox.

These days’ kids are getting their hands on phones and spending time playing games instead of actually heading out into the ground which is making them lazy and they are being less productive and creative. I think it’s better if parents enroll them in music and art classes where they can become more creative and have some kind of an activity that keeps them engaged.

From waking up in the morning to going to bed at night, our gadgets truly define the phrase. Digital detox is necessary for everyone to get away from the online life that everyone lives in. Social media is an exciting platform but a very chaotic aspect of everyone’s lives today. So it’s very important.

MeToo Sexual assault is not just a crime of sex. One person forcing another to perform sexual acts, through coercion, manipulation, threats, physical restraint, or physical violence, including touching or grabbing intimate body parts for sexual gratification IS sexual assault. Some women feel “lucky” to have escaped with harassment rather than assault; it still remains a quiet, unrecognised crime. Has violence become so normalised that we should feel grateful that we were only “just harassed” and not assaulted? Staying silent just feeds the misconception that “no really means yes”, “no means try harder”, or that buying dinner means sex. It’s time to go from covering up, to speaking up! Actor Alyssa Milano’s online call after allegations against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein became a conversation about men’s behaviour towards women and power imbalances. A slew of actresses like Dolly Parton, Charlize Theron, and Kate Winslet came forward with accusations of sexual assault. Milano, one of Weinstein’s most vocal critics, wrote: “If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘MeToo’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.” Soon, personal stories began pouring in from women in all industries across the world, and the hashtag #MeToo became a rallying cry against sexual harassment. Nearly 68,000 people so far have replied to Milano’s tweet and the hashtag #MeToo has been used more than 1 million times in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East and beyond. The French used #balancetonporc, while #YoTambien was predominant in Spain.
Tejaswini Yeleswarapu, Student The #MeToo campaign holds a greater significance than just another passing social media ‘trend’. It reflects a collective experience of trauma and injustice while boldly drawing attention to the sad reality of sexual harassment as an everyday, quotidian occurrence for women. This campaign helped shift the narrative from the typical ‘victim-blaming’ mindset towards misogyny and constant objectification being a deeply cultural issue. It calls to question the idea that actions, attire or precautions have any bearing on sexual assault and challenges all forms of victim blaming that have thus far been a key narrative within discourses surrounding sexual harassment. The most important part of the movement lies in its ability to offer catharsis; to be able to let go of suppressed feelings of shame and guilt and reclaim one’s dignity. My experience of sexual harassment is just as unsettling and harrowing and I, like so many other women, drew courage from the solidarity of this magnificent movement and chose not to let it hold me down or define who I am. 44 NOVEMBER, 2017 - TULIP

The #MeToo initiative primarily encouraged a lot of women who feel victimised, helpless or at fault, come out about their sexual harassment experiences and made them more aware of the fact that almost every woman has gone through such encounters, at some point in their lives. It made us realise that we aren’t at fault. Considering a wider perspective, in general, the initiative encouraged “sharing one’s emotional trauma” and broke all stereotypes that consider sharing a person’s so-called “helpless” experiences as weak. I believe these kinds of initiatives may or may not reduce such wrongdoings but they can certainly help people face their fears of revealing such experiences that unfortunately some minds consider “shameful”. I’ve personally experienced this twice. One of them took place when I was travelling in an auto. I was wearing shorts and had gone to drop off a friend of mine. On my way home a random biker came from behind, pinched my thigh while I was inside a moving auto, and he pinched it so bad for about 3-4 seconds that it turned red. The auto guy just looked at me because he was probably taken aback as I didn’t do anything about it. It was my fault there; I should’ve noted his number. I probably wasn’t as strong a person then. I sat still and couldn’t think of anything while he eloped. I did not tell a lot of people about this incident. In fact, I came out about it recently to my boyfriend and then, on Facebook. At that point of time, I thought I’d be restricted from wearing what I wanted to. I’ve had an incident in Delhi too, but I don’t feel too comfortable talking about that one. It was really horrifying for me.
Countless men and women have participated in this movement and famous personalities like Lady Gaga, Gabrielle Union, an advocate for sexual assault victims, Anna Paquin, and comedian Mallika Dua back home have extended their support and shared their experiences on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Nail It! G
- By Rabica Zulfiqar
Gone are the days when girls wore a single coat of simple and uncomplicated nail polish. These days it’s all about how crazy you can get with them. Women all around are now using their nails to express their individuality, creativity and making a statement. From the classic French manicure that goes perfectly with every outfit from casual jeans and a tee to a heavily embroidered ghagra, and the foolproof nudes and neutrals, we’ve come a long way. Be it the bizarre scorpion manicure, where a tiny, dead scorpion is stuck to your nails or the eccentric werewolf nails, which had become quite a sensation on Instagram, we’ve seen it all. Coming back to reality and talking about nails that are actually wearable and will not make you want to crawl out of your own skin, the gel, acrylic, and acry-gel extensions, holographic glitter, 3D nail art, blingy rhinestones and Swarovski crystals, and chameleon glitter are great options to choose from. Sahiti Reddy, Owner of Nail Ishq
“Hyderabad is all about gel nails and people should know that there is much more to nail art than just that. At Nail Ishq, we specialise in nail art and offer paper form extensions which have not yet been launched here. I absolutely love holographic glitter, Swarovski crystals because they stay as long as two months, sometimes. I also adore the chrome nails which are a huge hit right now. Looking after hands and nails is often neglected. To protect nails from damage, cuticle oil is a must. Hand creams with Vitamin E are great to keep your hands soft and supple. Olive oil is a natural alternative.” Address: Road No. 9, Banjara Hills, Guilt Trip, Hyderabad. Ph : +91 8008162224
Juveria Razzak,
Student. “I love experimenting with different nail trends. It’s something I’ve enjoyed since I was a kid. My favourites are 3D art, dual tones, marbling effect and rhinestones. Rhinestones make your nails look really pretty and I feel that a little bling is never a bad idea.”
Tanya Singh,
Product Outreach Analyst “When you have beautifully done nails, you look so much more attractive and that gives you a lot of confidence. I’ve known a number of people who paint their nails or get really expensive nail art done just so they don’t bite them. I think that’s a pretty good way to break a bad habit. I’m a big fan of accent nails. They look super chic and stylish.”

Zen UP YOUR space
The word ‘Zen’ has Japanese roots which means meditation. The base of the Zen style lies in minimalism, transparency and it is more than materials and positions; it is about home layouts and ambiance. The Zen designs offers peace and tranquillity, excellent for those looking to unwind after returning home from a taxing day of work. Give your home a Japanese touch The Zen interior is all about the Japanese style of recreating comfort and a positive environment in your house. Floor cushions around a low table are an easy way to create an oriental dining zone along with high contrast dark wood against a soothing warm cream backdrop. Sliding doors or screens, usage of wood and bamboo or other organic materials and incorporation of open spaces are a few such elements of the Japanese style. Lighting Whether natural or artificial it is an important element of a positive Zen design. Abstain from using harsh or too vibrant lights for your home. The light should be calming and soothing to the senses. Choose the design that is cleverly incorporating the softness of daylight or go for unruffled lamps and candles for your room. The intensity of the light matters a lot in creating a soothing ambiance for you and your family. You could choose floor lighting, wall installations, lamps and indirect lighting systems. Zen style plays with the natural light.

Sapna Franswah, Furniture Designer “Zen style designing is to make your home into a sanctuary, that is the purpose and focus. This can be radical so start with one area/ room. Decide that nothing is going to encroach on this space. Your home needs to be visually balanced and relaxing.’’ Tips 1. Keep it minimal, keep it clean. 2.
Choose earthy neutral colours for your overall look, this includes walls, flooring and furnishing.
3.
Don’t be afraid to add colour accents like teal vase or bright yellow cushion.
4.
Go in for solid wood furniture with straight lines and linen upholstery instead of false ceiling, keep it natural.
5.
Go for linen curtains as well...let natural light come in.

Unnati Pingle, Interior Designer “Zen to me is calmness, serenity and no chaos, being specific to interiors; it indicates harmony and balance between the interior elements. A riot of contrasting elements and colours can also be designed and composed to look Zen like. No clutter, clean spaces and most importantly close to nature by introducing plant life, foliage and lots of natural light into the interiors. Also it’s not true that Zen is everything Japanese. We could adapt the Zen concepts in Indian interiors as well.’’
50 NOVEMBER, 2017 - TULIP
Furniture Furniture in Zen style of decor features effortless lines and geometry. Zen style focuses on high-quality organic material without ornate elements or embellishment. A bare essential furnishing keeps the living space from feeling cramped or cluttered. When it comes to bed, a low Japanese style platform bed is the obvious winner for a Zen bedroom scheme. Upholstery and leather are recommended for components they go well with. As decorations are kept less, you could play with colours and sizes, for example laying of cushions, armchairs and other vintage elements are a great inclusion to Zen style.
INTERIOR
Colour Palette Colour palette for a Zen style interior should be one that is all about softness and warmth avoid stark contrasts or use of too much vibrancy. Colour scheme should involve whites and beiges, greys and pinks, blues and soothing tones of peach or orange. There should be a special chromatic concord between all the colours you use for the interiors; all the elements such as walls, floor, furniture, and furnishings should be in perfect synchronization. If you want to do some variation then you can do it by using different shades and tones of the same colour. Fabrics Cosy and light fabrics are a must for Zen style homes. Curtains are a very important ingredient to this style with the dual benefits of their free-flowing beauty and preventing hot currents. Curtains leave you with a feeling of comfortable seclusion within and are the ultimate choice to play with décor. Go for a natural fabric that matches with décor in terms of feel and appearances. You can even choose blinds for the fenestrations. These lend an all-new look and come in a wide variety of options like vertical, roman, roller and venetian. Indoor landscaping Plants are an all-important constituent of the Zen house. Plants recreate your home ambiance into a greener and healthier one as well as emanating aromas and enriching the aesthetics. Bonsai is a popular element of Japanese landscape which can be included in you Zen home too. If you don’t have an outdoor garden, you can always incorporate Zen garden within your interior room using twisted trees and pebbles.
Supraja Rao, Interior Designer “To me Zen interiors are not just about design it’s the way of life and state of your mind. If you think on these lines which is simple, uncluttered, light, very gentle or still. I think it’s about being at peace at yourself and at peace with your life and simplicity. Uncluttered space allows you to move forward more and that’s the crux of Zen. In minimalistic design you are seeing less, allowing your mind and body process more.” Tips 1. Keep it simple and natural. 2.
Use natural materials over synthetics.
3.
Use natural wood over polyurethane.
4.
Use plain bold colors or use light soft pastel colors and preferably white, let the walls breathe.
5.
Keep fabrics simple and also the furniture simple, straight, light nothing too bulky.
6.
Keep the lights clutter free you can use lamps and candles, let natural light and air flow through your home.

Minimalism at its best
How tired are you of clearing out your wardrobe, arranging your bags every 2 days and untangling your jewellery every time you wear it? The solution to all your wardrobe problems has been staring you down for months now, looking at you straight in the eye and shooting signs at you. The capsule wardrobe, easy, efficient and drop-dead stylish is your solution. How many times have you looked at your closet and moaned about how you don’t have any clothes to wear, or you have worn that top too many times and those shoes don’t go with that dress? The Capsule wardrobe is your superhero in a brand new Prada red cape. 52 NOVEMBER, 2017 - TULIP
Manisha Kapoor, Socialite She is a firm believer of the capsule wardrobe trend. Always impeccably dressed in simple, minimalist clothing, you can call her an expert of sorts. “I believe dressing simply gives you an elevated sense of style, it helps a viewer recognize what your personal sense of style is. The capsule wardrobe captures your essence in the simplest form; it makes you seem cool, collected and does not portray you as somebody who is a fan of bling. Personally, the capsule wardrobe is my go to; it doesn’t consume time and helps me decide my outfit with ease. It’s a time saver, life-saver and a total bomb when worn,” she says.
FASHION The capsule wardrobe works with one very simple ideology, don’t store clothes that you have no use of. It consists of recently bought, trendy clothes that you love. Hence, you waste less time and you don’t spend hours picking clothes and jewellery from an overstuffed cupboard. The capsule wardrobe does all the work for you, it shows you the clothes that really matter and helps you choose easily. It simplifies your wardrobe choices. The capsule wardrobe helps you identify your style, choose what suits your body, enhance your personality and make you shine out in an overflowing crowd. The trend “less is more” has been circling around for months, floating around the little things in life; the capsule wardrobe is an approach to fashionable minimalism. Here is a five step procedure to start a capsule wardrobe: 1. Reduce your wardrobe to 37 items. 2.
Try wearing those 37 items for three months, experiment with the style of each of your items and sometimes land on mix and match.
3.
Reduce your shopping expeditions for those three months or the season.
4.
In the last 2 weeks of your season, shop for new outfits that match the trends and palettes of the season. Choose wisely, as if it is a matter of life and death.
Alankrita Ranjan, PR at ITCKakatiya She is chic, calm and always gorgeous. Here is her take on the capsule wardrobe trend, “Well, lately I’ve undergone the process of discovering what’s essential to me and shedding what isn’t and I’ve particularly relished minimizing my wardrobe. It has made my life a lot easier. I’ve managed to build a wardrobe that fits my personality and preferences. Over the past few years of continuing culling my clothes and being very conscious of the new items I do purchase, I’ve found the constraints of a minimalist wardrobe helpful in finding, refining and expressing my personal style.”
5.
Continue your stress free journey into minimalistic shopping (or window shopping)
Your capsule wardrobe is entirely based off of your style, your body type and your consciousness towards latest trends. Here is how the capsule wardrobe is defined: • a collection of clothes and accessories that include only items considered essential •
a person’s basic collection of coordinating clothes that can be used to form the basis of outfits for all occasions
•
a set of clothing, normally around 24 items, which can be mixed and matched to create a wide variety of outfits.
Sort your clothes in sections: love, like, dislike and hate, then donate or give away the clothes in the dislike and hate piles and choose your favourite clothes from the like pile. Then select the clothes from the like and love piles on the basis of use and daily need and essential party or outdoor wear. From these piles pick your 37 clothes. Minimalism has begun to speak volumes, simplifying and narrowing your wardrobe gives you a chic and more experimental route to dressing comfortably and fashionably. The Trend BlendAthleisure More than ever our busy and hectic lives demand comfortable and practical clothes. Of course, giving up on style is simply not an option, so how do we combine fashion and function together to create a chic but totally wearable look? Athleisure is the answer. Turning performance wear into everyday wear, athleisure is blurring the lines between the clothes you’d wear to the gym and those you’d wear to lunch. With no need to lug around a change of clothes or struggle in heels during a long day, it’s no wonder why this booming industry keeps getting bigger. The term “athleisure” has now been added to the dictionary and is defined as “casual clothing designed to be worn both for exercising and for general use.” Although this definition may technically be correct, it’s also a little dull. The true beauty of athleisure is that it’s both practical and completely fashionable. The relaxed and cool style blends sportswear with ready-to-wear to create styles that are chic and comfortable. More than a simple trend, athleisure reflects a change in lifestyle, it goes hand-in-hand with an increased health consciousness, busy schedules, and relaxed standards of dress. As such, this effortlessly stylish apparel movement is here to stay, so it’s time to invest. People of all ages are wearing their work out wear all day now, whether it’s leggings with a longer coat and a scarf, or someone wearing a cropped T-shirt with a denim jacket and some high-heeled
boots. People shop for their athletic wear thinking, how can I wear this from the gym to the street or home to mall? Fortunately the latest crop of activewear brands is working hard to blur the lines between the locker room and your everyday wardrobe Tips: Go beyond all black, choose colours block prints and designs. Mix function and fashion, make sure it’s made of performance fabric, so it’s quick drying, it’s odour resistant, it’s moisture wicking and not see through. Accessorize!! It only takes one piece to take your Athleisure look from gym to street. A pair of mirrored sunglasses, a structured leather jacket, a shirt tied around the waist . . . the key is that the piece has a sleek, sporty feel itself. Get creative, especially when it comes to mixing pieces and layering. Make leggings more street wear appropriate by pairing them with longer tops or tying a shirt around your waist. Wear Athleisure to work by replacing your blazer with a bomber jacket or by mixing a sporty T-shirt with tailored pieces.

FASHION “Athleisure is such a huge trend in India too, and for good reason! Fashion isn’t always about comfort, but this complete Athleisure look is super, super comfortable! From the cropped white t-shirt, to the black joggers, to the bomber jacket, one can’t get more comfortable and still look fashionable and pulled together. But to make sure I didn’t look too comfortable and like I was actually going for a jog, I paired it with some gold slip-on shoes and simple gold necklaces.” Divya Maben, Blogger
“With each passing day, athleisure is only becoming more acceptable. It’s not just a trend anymore, it’s more like lifestyle and I can personally vouch for it. What started off as just one or two pieces of sportswear included here and there in your outfit has become more like the other way around. I personally find it best to pull Athleisure off while running errands, grocery shopping, or even travelling. Nothing beats the comfort of running around in your sportswear looking all chic.” Pallavi Ruhail, Blogger
“Athleisure is street style with a sporty element and is usually casual and comfortable. For e.g, numbered tees with denims, yoga pants, trekkies with a casual top or shirt and are mostly worn with flat shoes. Sports Luxe on the other hand, is more embellished and edgy with a sporty vibe to it. These trends of comfort without compromising on style have become so popular over the years that they just do not tend to cease, but make a comeback every season with different cuts and tweaks.” Smitha Roy Majumdar, Blogger
“What started as a trend by some people who ended up going to work in their yoga pants with an uber cool office shirt and layered jacket is now profusely known as the ‘athleisure’ trend. Wearing your athletics wear is now totally acceptable and is being popularly incorporated in our street style daily. WELLBEING
Commit to be fit Fitness gurus and trainers are coming up with new workouts and diet regimes every day, to add an element of fun or take things up a notch. From HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) to Yoga and Zumba, the list goes on. We’ve asked one of the best fitness trainers of Hyderabad, Mr. Mohammad Zia Ulla, a certified personal trainer, specialist in strength and conditioning, and sports nutrition, to answer some of the most fundamental questions regarding the trends that people have been inclining towards recently, to help us choose the best workouts and give us some tips to incorporate into our daily lives. - By Rabica Zulfiqar If you’re sticking to a diet full of lean protein, good carbs, vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables but still failing to meet the daily protein requirements, you can opt for protein shakes. It’s a supplement and cannot replace food.
What are the most popular fitness trends currently? The fitness and wellness sector at a rate of 16-18% every year, new trends are bound to come. Some of the top trends currently are wearable fitness technology, body or free weight training, high-intensity interval training, strength training, yoga, high energy athletic training, virtual boxing and much more. What according to you are top 3 and why? Body weight training is my number one preference because you don’t need any fancy or expensive equipment. Body weight training, when combined with aerobic activity, helps increase lean muscle mass. Number two would be HIIT. If it’s difficult for you to take time off your busy schedules to work out, HIIT is for you. You’ll engage in short bursts of exercise at near maximum heart rate followed by short period of rests for about 20-30 minutes. This helps you burn more calories as compared to a longer session. Finally, I’d say strength training because it helps preserve muscle mass and increases metabolism.
How true is the mantra “Fitness is 70% diet and 30% gym”? It’s neither 70/30 nor 80/20. There’s no mathematical formula behind it. You should be giving your 100% to nutrition and gym. Diet is important because your body requires fuel to function, and exercise is important because you cannot see a difference without challenging your body. There has to be a good balance between the two. Do you offer customised diet plans to your clients? Yes, I do. What to eat and what to avoid when trying to lose weight? First and foremost, start drinking lots of
water; eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and protein-rich foods. Avoid alcohol, carbonated and sugary drinks, and processed foods. These are the basics; the list can go on and on but it depends on your goal weight and you also need to ensure that you get the right amount of calories every day. Do detox diets really work? Detox diets are very popular but there is little evidence that they eliminate toxins from the body. Some people report to feeling more focused and energetic after a detox. This may be due to the fact that detox eliminates the highly processed foods that have solid fats and added sugar. Simply avoiding these highcalorie foods may be the reason why they feel better after a detox. It’s necessary to consult a doctor or a nutritionist before starting any kind of diet. Mohammed Zia Ulla +91 9177527347
Your best tips for getting fit/ losing weight. Eat 5-6 small meals a day at regular intervals, drink lots of water and get enough sleep every night. Also, try combining cardio with strength training to get faster results. Are protein shakes as good as people claim them to be? Protein shakes don’t possess magical powers. TULIP - NOVEMBER, 2017 59

Hampi
TRAVEL
A UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Karnataka, this place is a must visit especially if you love some art and history. There are more than 500 monuments to see here, strewn across the gorgeous backdrop of hills, so make sure you devote enough time to this trip! The political, royal centre of the Vijayanagara empire, temples and even the quarters of Muslim officers in the royal army are all here in a harmonious setting, located just a few miles from each other. The river Tungabhadra also adds to the beauty of Hampi, with coracle boats and stone-hills. Getting There - The closest town to Hampi is Hospet and you can take a train till here and then a short bus ride to Hampi. If you want to fly down, Hubli is the closest airport located about 160 kms from here.
The Best Part
You learn more about yourself than you could ever imagine. Travel changes you, if you are open to it, especially solo travel. When you are alone on the road with only your thoughts and experiences for company, you can’t help but start to think. At home, occupied with the fuss and the fury, the hustle and bustle of so-called “normal life” it has become easy, almost standard to ignore the bigger issues and problems we face. When you are on the road, it’s not so easy, and oftentimes you are forced to face those demons, thoughts or issues that you might have ignored otherwise.
“I am an India based Designer, Blogger, Photographer and Travel writer. I enjoy travelling as much as sharing my stories and photographs from around the world with people to inspire them to make even more wonderful journeys themselves. I call myself ‘The Wanderer’ as I often love to just wander about in the places I visit - to meet new people, see new places and to just soak in new experiences. Often it’s the unexpectedness of the moment which makes it so memorable.” Siddhartha Joshi, Travel Blogger Thewandrer.com
Where and How Long to Stay – Winter is the best time to visit Hampi with the temperature not dropping below 12 degrees. There are a lot of nice guest houses to stay at and also some hotels if you want a luxurious trip. There are also heritage resorts with ayurvedic massages to offer. An ideal trip should be of 2-3 days to really see what Hampi has to offer.
Puducherry
If you want to go to France but don’t have the money yet, go to Puducherry instead! With French influence in its architecture, this sleepy little place is perfect for a serene, beach getaway. The food has a lot of French influence too and beer is cheap, making it a place to visit if you want a real culinary experience. The Auroville temple is a place to visit if you want to reconnect with your spiritual side. Getting There – You can get here by driving down from Chennai on one of the most scenic rides in India. While there, you can walk around town and explore. It’s also famous for its incense at the Aurobindo Ashram shops. October to February is the best time to visit with the minimum temperature not going below 17 degrees. Where and How Long to Stay – Staying in one of the colonial establishments converted into hotels is the best thing to do here. This can be a three-four day trip, ideally.

TRAVEL
Dare to go off the tourist circuit “I’ve always felt far safer in a remote village in the mountains or by the coast than in a tourist-centric town like Rishikesh. This likely sounds counter-intuitive to the logic of going where everyone else goes so that you have the safety of other travelers but less touristy towns are safer because of India’s cultural dynamics. Typically, people from all over a region go to set up shop in a tourist city with the sole intention of making money – moving in and out often – resulting in a fragmented community where no one really knows anyone else. This means that the inhibitions caused by being judged by the community for a misdeed, such as harassing a visitor, are very low. India is still grappling with gender issues and laws are so lax that the idea of being judged by society is a greater deterrent than any legal enforcement. In a small village that receives few tourists, the local community is likely to be more closely knit and a visitor will be received with more genuine curiosity and warmth. Indeed, I find that the moment I leave the tourist circuit behind and go to a relatively offbeat place, I am received with overwhelming hospitality, and locals – both men and women – tend to go out of their way to look out for my safety and wellbeing. I even found the confidence to hitchhike solo in remote Himalayan villages in Himachal Pradesh!
“I quit my corporate life with a dream of traveling the globe at age 23. 2 years later, I packed up my life into a backpack and decided to hit the road indefinitely. I travel slow, seek offbeat and local experiences, stay in a place for a few weeks or as long as it inspires me, and move on. I’ve hitch-hiked along Romania’s northern countryside, lived with a Mayan community in Guatemala, journeyed along Canada’s great wilderness by train and swum with black tip sharks on Malaysia’s east coast. I hope to inspire you to step out of your comfort zone and discover the world!” Shivya Nath, Travel Blogger Theshootingstar.com
Dharamsala
Home to the largest Tibetan temple outside Tibet, Dharamsala also has the monastery of the Dalai Lama. The upper part of Dharamsala, known as Mcleodganj is the one more famous with travellers. Bir is located southeast of Dharamsala and Biling is on the way to Thamsar Pass. It’s a trek of 14kms which can be done on foot from Bir to Biling. Biling is also a paragliding destination with some of the best services in the world. Kaererilake, which is a high altitude fresh water lake, is in the northwest of Dharamsala and a trek can be made out of going there. Getting There – Easiest to reach by a flight to Dharamshala, taking a bus or train is a better option to get a feel of your trip. The hotels are cheap with the best time of visit being March to October. It’s ideal even for a weekend getaway. Where and How Long to Stay – There are lots of budget and luxury hotels and cottages to choose from. Spend two days here and combine it with a trip to Dalhousie or McLeodganj for another two days to make it a longer one.

Sandhan Valley
Referred to as the Grand Canyon of Maharashtra, the Sandhan Valley is a trek of a lifetime for the thrill-seeker in you. It’s a combination of a valley with a canyon. Accessible from November to May, this water carved valley has Ratnagad and Ajoba mountain ranges around it. Going back to basics, it is the quintessential tent-pitching camp where food is cooked in campfires with the aroma filling the air around. The trek takes five hours to finish with activities like rappelling to really get your adrenaline pumping. Getting There - Reaching there is half the fun with a train journey to Kasara and then a bus till the Samrad village where it’s located in the Bhandardara region. You can also fly to Mumbai and then go on with the train. Where and How long to stay- Accommodation is in the tents by the campsites in the area or even in the open if you’re an experienced trekker. This is generally a two day trip.
The Main Challenge “I think while we decide to go solo, the biggest challenge or the things which come to our minds are loneliness, security and of course managing the budget. But then, this is why you travel solo. To open yourself to the world, to test your wings and learning to live a new dimension of life with limited means. It changes your priority and attitude towards life. If I can handle all this, you can too.” Swati Jain, PR

The best video games of 2017 Nioh
The basic loop of Dark Souls – heading out from a checkpoint to find the last place you died at, collecting the experience points you dropped, pushing on to the next checkpoint where you can spend that XP while knowing that doing so will allow enemies to respawn – has shown up in plenty of recent games. We’ve had Dark Souls but two-dimensional, Dark Souls but science-fiction, and with Nioh, we had Dark Souls but in 17th century Japan. The studio who made Ninja Gaiden turned out to be familiar enough with hard-as-nails action games to get the basics right, and that setting – which you approach as an outsider, an Irish samurai – combined mysticism and spirits with blackpowder rifles and historical characters like Hattori Hanzo to a memorable effect.
Hitman: the Complete First Season
The episodic release of Hitman was one of the best games of 2016 and now that it’s complete and available to play at your own pace it’s one of the best games of 2017 as well. It’s worth slowing down to appreciate Hitman, however, each level is packed with murderous potential. The opportunities system, which at first seemed a little hand-holdy, turned out to be an essential way of managing the many ways to ingratiate ourselves into locations from Paris to Hokkaido, finding the perfect disguise or backdoor, smuggling in the right weapon, getting the target into the right position – and then, if things went just right, waltzing back out in stylish slow motion. Hitman was a good time even if things went wrong though, all emergency leaps through windows and slides down drainpipes with bullets flying past. Now that developers IO Interactive are independent and in control of their property, the chances for a second season look good. But even if they didn’t, the first season would comfortably stand as one of the best assassination simulators around.
‘Snake Pass’
It’s always great when games make us feel like someone else, whether they put us in a different person’s shoes or the entirely shoeless body of something that isn’t even human. Snake Pass was all about what it would be like to move around as a snake. Its hero Noodle is a vegetarian snake, so thankfully there was no poisoning and slowly digesting other animals involved – instead it was all about overcoming obstacles. The controls took some getting used to but eventually became second nature: using the stick to slither left and right instead of plodding straight ahead made you go faster because contracting and release their muscles is just how snakes move, and climbing up or along branches was all about wrapping around them and then switching between grip and release. There’s even a button for raising your head to get Noodle’s chin over the next branch. Normally the basic verb of puzzle-platformers is “jump”, but Snake Pass put together a whole new vocabulary of movement – every barrier could be conquered eventually, you just had to learn how to snake over it.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
The classic kart racer returns, this time as an updated version of the latest Wii U instalment, fine-tuned for the portable multiplayer capabilities of the Switch console. Mario Kart is a vehicle for fun with all your friends and family, no matter their individual skill, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best, most versatile version of that yet.
Gravity Rush 2
The acclaimed gravity manipulating sci-fi title is back with an unexpected yet welcome sequel, following lead character Kat as she swoops and falls through a stylised neon city. It recreates the sense of reckless abandon that came with riding a bike as a child, the feeling of limitless potential combined with the intoxicating thrill of knowing that the tarmac could come up to meet you at any moment.
Resident Evil 7
The Resident Evil series was stuck in a real rut before Resident Evil 7 came along, but its first-person viewpoint and focus on a restricted location turned out to be exactly what the seminal horror franchise needed. The tricks it borrowed from first-person horror games like Outlast and P.T. made it the first Resident Evil game in a long time to feel genuinely scary, and there were some benefits from the mash-up flowing in the other direction, too. Turned out the glut of claustrophobic games about spooky corridors and video cameras really needed some guns and bullets and a family of mutant hillbillies to shake them up, and the action-survival horror elements Resident Evil 7 kept really made it stand out from all the other YouTube fright factories.
‘Arms’
The boxing in Wii Sports may have made everyone look like Tina from Bob’s Burgers practicing her capoeira in front of the television but thank God Nintendo didn’t give up on it. Arms was Wii Sports’ boxing complexified as much as it was Street Fighter simplified, a two-player fighting game about outlandish characters with stretchy, spring-loaded arms (or sometimes hair) who bounced around arenas punching, grabbing, and throwing each other. It made the case for the Switch’s controls, playable with or without the joycons, and also furthered the case for Nintendo’s ability to craft characterful new multiplayer games. Like Splatoon before it, Arms sold players on its bizarre concept without relying on the inclusion of Mario or Link or Donkey Kong, carving out another new niche without compromising it with the familiar. Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2017!! An extravaganza affair of fashion and style!! #Morethanyouthink – with none other than the sizzling jacqueline fernandes!! Blenders Pride is considered the definitive expression of style and fashion. Jacqueline what is that one thing you love about the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour (BPFT)? I had walked for BPFT 2 years ago. This time I’m walking for Falguni and Shane Peacock. And one thing I absolutely love about them is the strong team they have and their effective communication. It’s just fantastic! It is not about one thing when it comes to defining fashion and style. There are several multitudes. Like a glamorous woman can be a very successful woman, she can be very beautiful, very intelligent and a lot more. You can see the various multitudes reflect in their designs. Congratulations on the super success of Judwa 2. We would like to know more about your upcoming projects and when do your fans get to see you sizzle on the screen next? Well my next upcoming films are “Drive”. Drive is with Sushanth Singh Rajput. The film is directed by Tarun Mansukhani and is as glamorous as it can be. Tarun loves making his actors looks amazing and project a different world. It’s a Dharma production so it has that x- factor in it. It will release next year around March. And the other project which I will be working on is “Race 3”. We all know how super fit you are. We would like you to share a few tips with our readers about how you motivate yourself for your everyday workout regime and maintain yourself. I have been working out for the last 10 years now. I think the trick to doing this is to have really good trainers. I give a lot of credit to the people I am training with. You need to keep engaging your mind and the body at the same time. You don’t enjoy something if it gets monotonous. So there are weeks where I just do Pilates, then at times I do a lot of dancing or cardio etc. But the important thing is engaging yourself in the activity you do only then you enjoy your workout. And it gives immense satisfaction when your body gets strong which also contributes to your mental strength which is very important. We have all seen you growing in this Industry. Be it modelling, acting, and fashion trend setting. You have evolved beautifully in all the areas. So what is that drives you to perform better with each project? What is your mantra to success? I think it is the passion to keep wanting to learn more. It is nothing else. Like all others I have also seen a lot of transition from struggle to success. There are lot of lessons and heartbreaks throughout the journey. But then it’s about how many times can you keep picking yourself up? How many times can you let your heart get broken? How many times can you allow struggle to help you learn? And I think that has done the magic for me. There is no point being amazing all the time. Of course you should strive for it. But it is the small struggles that bring out your inner strength and add so much depth and substance to your life. And be grateful for what you have. And that attitude has really helped me. You have such a flawless and glowing skin. Our readers would like to know what is the secret behind this porcelain complexion? You really need to have a very good skin care regime. You really got to maintain it. It is not something you get overnight. For someone who is exhausted you need do to all the therapy. Remove all the makeup before you sleep, sleep well, wash your face regularly. Apart from this one thing which has really helped my skin is Vitamin C. I take like 2 capsules of dose every day. And also detox regularly. Do not overdose on anything. TULIP - NOVEMBER, 2017 67

Priyanka Chopra: The world is full of Harvey Weinstein’s
HrithikRoshan spills the beans
Piles of dirty laundry were aired out during the Hrithik Roshan and Arnab Goswami interview. After being mum for a long period of time during the course of the “Hrithik-Kangana Controversy,” Hirthik Roshan finally spoke up. He says he has been harassed, after posting a clear-cut statement about the controversy on Instagram, the Krissh-star appeared on “the Nation wants to know.” The events of the harassment were declared in complete and uncensored chronological answer, backed up by evidence the actor’s claims and problems seemed quite heartfelt and truthful. Watch the story unravel at: https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGgTp6IGltE, and make your decision.
In the entire whirlpool of the Harvey Weinstein controversy, at an event, while speaking about women empowerment, the actress was questioned about consent and harassment. Asked whether there’s a Harvey Weinstein in India, Priyanka said, “I don’t think there is and I don’t think there is only a Harvey Weinstein in Hollywood. I think there will be a lot more stories that will come up. That happens not just in India, but all over the world. It’s the power of men trying to take away the power of women. It’s about feeling powerful and macho.” Harvey Weinstein harassed several actresses, his “hit” list beginning from Cara Delevingne to Gwyneth Paltrow. Now the Harvey Weinstein has been shunned by the Hollywood industry, removed from the Oscars and forced to be a recluse.

He reflected on the entire experience Friday admitting that he “cried at the end.” Even though he was quite sad, the Brit did joke, “I know everything now,” alluding to the popular moment when Snow’s girlfriend Ygritte—and real life fiancé Rose Leslie—told him, “You know nothing, Jon Snow.” Game of Thrones will return to HBO sometime late next year. 68 NOVEMBER, 2017 - TULIP

Samantha and Naga Chaitanya have tied the knot, and it was gorgeous
The Tollywood duo got married in two lovely picturesque ceremonies. Yes, you heard me, two. The first was a warm Hindu ceremony bathed in red and gold, emanating familial love and deep connection, the second was a Christian ceremony bathed in white, pink, gold and waning shades of magenta that focused on the couple’s undying love and affection for each other. Their wedding pictures turned me all shades of love and gave me permanent heart eyes,it is heart-melting how perfect they are for each other. Between the big fat Indian wedding and the floral Christian one, their love shines through like a beacon of light.

MOVIES Movie Reviews
Golmaal Again Golmaal is the screwball comedy that has been kept alive for the last eleven years. Returns on satellite channels always make you chuckle, no matter from which point you watch the film. Like previous installments, this one too has moments of unadulterated fun. Whether it’s lisping Lakshman (Shreyas Talpade) or the bully Gopal, who is petrified of ghosts, you can’t help but laugh uncontrollably because each of the characters are a delight to watch. The dialogue is pedestrian but witty. Then you have the additional horror thrown in drawing inspiration from the south film Kanchana. However in the second half when the actual plot is introduced the proceedings get little dull. It is Rohit Shetty’s credit that he never lets you get too fidgety. Gags, fights, songs, comedy, ghosts, here is a buffet you can overdose on. If you are looking for some story which has logic then this movie doesn’t do justice to that but if you are looking to just laugh and be merry Golmaal will surely do the trick again.
Blade Runner 2049 This is the sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic directed by Ridley Scott and based on Philip K Dicks’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Starring Harrison Ford as a “blade runner” a future world cop whose job is to track down and kill disobedient almost-human androids known as replicants. The 2017 follow-up simply couldn’t be any more of a triumph, a stunning enlargement and improvement. It’s mind-boggling, cortex-wobbling, craniofacial-splintering images are there to trigger a kind of ecstatic despair at the idea of post-human future and what it means to imagine the wreck of our current form of Homo sapiens. As so often literature and cinema go we are reminded that science fiction is there to tackle big ideas. This film delivers pure hallucinatory craziness that will leave you hyperventilating. The setting is in Los Angeles, Ryan Gosling plays LAPD officer K, a limited lifespan replicant whose task is to track down and destroy those first gen models who can live as long as humans and are still illegally hiding out. The production and design by Dennis Gasner and cinematography by Roger Deakins are both delectable. This film’s scale is extraordinary; it places the acid tab of cinema-pleasure on your tongue.
Raju Gari Gadhi 2 Raju Gari Gadhi was a small film that emerged successfully despite the fact that there were no big names to boast of. But for the sequel, director Omkar roped in big stars like Nagarjuna and Samantha added some glam quotient in the form of Seerat Kapoor apart from including popular comedians like Vennela Kishore. The first half of the movie is devoted to establishing the backdrop of the plot. There are definitely some edge-of-the-seat moments, but since they involve comedian Kishore and his two friends, the audience knows for sure that the outcome wouldn’t be too spooky. And that’s precisely why the second half leaves you with a little disappointed. After the interval, the movie moves from a thriller mode to take an investigative turn as Rudra (Nagarjuna) sets about unraveling the mystery if the ghost. The climax scene in which an entire college room is transposed to an entirely different place reminds you of the scene in the Hollywood film Room No 1402. Samantha is also very good as Amurtha (the Ghost). Taman’s background music is an asset to the film as his tune running through the entire course of the film will keep you hooked. Raju Gari Gadhi 2 makes for a passable weekend watch.

BOOKS The Golden House
By Salman Rushdie Salman Rushdie’s provocative new novel opens on the historic eve of Barack Obama’s election. Nero Golden who is a secretive billionaire and his three sons have recently moved into an exclusive Greenwich Village community where they meet a budding filmmaker Rene, the novel’s narrator. Rene quickly decides that the Nero Goldens family are the perfect subject for a mockumentary style film; this premise enables him to become fully immersed in the family’s fraught ecosystem. When the Trump-like presidential candidate Gary “Green” Gwynplaine, who calls himself the Joker enters the story things become shockingly familiar. What follows next is a riveting and timely examination of American politics and values. The Golden House is not Brideshead or Gatsby it is too rich and too riotous. Rather it is a modern Bonfire of the Vanities, New York seen from the inside and outside, as only a writer of multiple selves such as Rushdie – Indian, British and now a New Yorker could do.
Moving Kings
By Joshua Cohen David King, self-described Republican Jew, is the owner of the Moving Kings, a moving company that increasingly specializes in evicting people from the not-yet-gentrified corners of New York’s tri-state area. When his distant cousin Yoav and his friend Uri come to NYC from Israel after completing their compulsory military service, he offers them jobs that will be perfect for throwing out delinquent tenants. But just as they are adjusting to civilian life, they eerily thrust into a situation fuelled by revenge that’s reminiscent of a war zone they left behind. This is a deeply political novel that helps us to imagine a world where the real kings and queens will not be the property racketeers, but instead those who attain a freedom that has nothing to do with what they own.
American War
By Omar El Akkad This dystopian novel imagines epic civilizational shifts. American War imagines a United States (albeit increasingly underwater), divided by The Second American Civil War of 20742093. The conflict starts when the President attempts to introduce the Sustainable Future Act, designed to prohibit the use of fossil fuels anywhere in the United States in response to climate change. The southern states of Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee and South Carolina want none of it (much of California, Nevada, Arizona, and West Texas have already separated from the Union and are controlled by Mexican forces). Biological terrorism and warfare complicate matters even more. Amid this tumultuous backdrop is El Akkad’s protagonist, young resilient nature-loving Sarat or Sarah, whose journey through this future world, humanize what would be otherwise a scary and unrelenting place. As diverting a read as this engrossing novel is, American War should no doubt be read as a cautionary tale.
