FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK What a fantastic August it was – the holy month with wonderful celebrations of Ramzan, all across the city! Couldn’t have expected any better than the way the festival brightened Hyderabad. I wish every reader, a year filled with joy, happiness and peace all the way ahead!

It’s nice to know that this September begins with celebrations of Lord Ganesha’s birthday and so, a rundown on the significance of this festival. And I take this opportunity to wish everyone, a very happy Ganesh Chaturthi.

After becoming a part of the Hollywood celebrities’ daily routines, the importance of Pilates is spreading vastly to other countries and here in India as well. And so, we cover a few famous exercises one can follow to be more fit and healthy. Beauty diva herself, Shireen Khan is featured under the section - A Day From Her Diary. Love does never fade away among the charming couple – Samina Khan and Raza Ali Khan, who are featured in Special Bonding, in this issue. Piece of Life will have an article on women choosing their profession, over their personal relationships and also on how they still manage to dedicate their times to their families.

Jennifer Lopez might not return to American Idol after her busy personal and professional year. She wasn’t sure and she actually said that in public, because she has been a little bit tired with everything going on in her life, right now. However, she claims she really did have a good time and really do love it. She loves working with the contestants and the singers and the artists. The star who split with husband Marc Anthony less than two months after the season ten finale, continued working with the panel of judges and she had a trill working and getting involved in everything that was going on around her. She claims it kept her busy and that is what she needed, although now she wants to slow down and not take life so fast. She has done a lot in the entertainment industry and her success continues. The other judges on the panel have no idea if she will return next season or not however they all respect her decision and all believe she is a good person to be around.

Bruce Willis Enlisted in G.I. JOE II

With production slated to begin later this month, the still officially untitled G.I.Joe sequel is still looking to cast the part of the very first G.I. Joe General Joe Colton. Following up on previous rumors that Bruce Willis would be playing the part, the actor is in negotiations. The movie will be directed by John Chu and will continue the toy inspired world, depicted in 2009 with Rise of the Cobra with a primarily new cast except for the returning Channing Tatum, as Duke. Paramount is moving forward with a sequel to this installment - Rise of the Cobra. This action packed adventure will essentially keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. The toy figure turned into a movie, was an amazing feat the first film had and now to have a second installment coming out will be totally awesome. And it will be even better if Bruce Willis is in the movie - there will be a lot of mayhem and action.

Kim and Kris Fairytale Wedding!

Making for a fairytale moment in their young lives, Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries exchanged vows during a lavish ceremony in Montecito, California, recently. The reality star was dressed in a custom Vera Wang gown as stepdad Bruce Jenner walked her down the aisle and up to her tuxedo-clad fiance, who tweeted just ahead of the big moment – this is it. Taking part in the classic service were family members Kourtney, Khloe, Kylie and Kendall as bridesmaids. Once the lovely couple said their I DOs, the guest list of 440 attendees made their way to the reception grounds - with stars partaking in the lavish affair including Lindsay Lohan, Ryan Seacrest (with Julianne Hough), Avril Lavigne, Mario Lopez, Maria Menounos, Sugar Ray Leonard, Mark Ballas, Serena Williams, Nicole Richie, Kelly Osbourne and Eva Longoria, as well as numerous members of Humphries’ New Jersey Nets team. For Bipasha Basu It was through the Bhatt movies - Jism and Raaz, that the very sexy Bipasha Basu rose to fame. Reportedly, Bips had upset Mukesh bhatt, when she turned down Murder - II, citing date issues. However, the bombshell has made up for it by signing for the lead role in Raaz 3, which will be made in 4D and will be directed by Vikram Bhatt. Vikram said - ‘Bipasha expressed the desire to work with us again and she loved the Raaz 3 script. It is a very challenging and powerful script role for her. Bipasha is a very important part of the team that created Raaz as a brand. I am happy to be working with her again and hope to create the same magic again.’ Bips says, ‘I have a long and fruitful relationship with Bhatts. They have given me two of my best movies of which, Raaz my second movie, was a golden jubilee hit, it was only a matter of time before we worked together.’

Salman Khan Hospitalized?

It was shocking news for fans of Salman Khan when they heard the rumour that their favourite star was hospitalized after a heart attack. It said that Salman Khan had a heart stroke and was admitted to Saifee Hospital where he was to undergo angioplasty. Spokesman of Saifee Hospital too denied the news. But a source close to the superstar has rubbished the rumour – ‘This is completely false news. He (Salman) has not been admitted to the hospital’ - an associate of the star told a news agency. ‘I was with him till about 10.30 at night and he was completely fine. He was hale and hearty and was busy promoting the movie by doing some interviews. He was in a very good mood,’ added a source from the unit of Salman’s forthcoming release Bodyguard, coming on August 31. Though other stars in their forties have now and then been beset with health and fitness problems, Salman Khan is among those who never had to see the doctor much.

After filmmaker Karan Johar and Bollywood veteran Simi Garewal, it is now actress Preity Zinta who has joined the chatshow bandwagon on the small screen with her upcoming show ‘Up Close and Personal with PZ’, where she will be seen having a freewheeling talk with Bollywood stars. The actress, who has worked with Bollywood biggies like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar and others will be chatting with celebrities about their journey via personal quizzes, career maps, prodding some dark secrets, hidden talents and important tests on acting and dancing skills. ‘I am very excited about the show as I feel it is the perfect platform for me to connect with the audiences while giving them access and to know the real stars,’ she said. The show will be aired on UTV Stars from September 3. Preity made her television debut as the host of Guinness World Records ‘Ab India Todega’ early this year. The show is designed to deliver the promise of being intimate insiders. With Preity as the host the show will bring back the charm in chat shows.

Tollywood Stars With Anna Hazare

Tollywood actors, directors, writers, producers and other technicians expressed their total sympathies with the Gandhian activist Anna Hazare in his crusade against corruption and introduction of the Jan Lok Pal Bill in Parliament. As a sign of expressing their support to Anna Hazare, actor Rajasekar and his wife Jeevitha, Murali Mohan, Shivaji Raja, Sanjana and Babu Mohan, along with a host of other tinsel world figures, took part in a rally organized by the Movie Artistes’ Association at Film Nagar, Jubilee Hills. The rally commenced from Andhra Pradesh Film Chamber of Commerce in Jubilee Hills. The actors tied black ribbons around their mouths as a sign of protest and set up placards and raised slogans in support of Hazare. Speaking on the occasion, Dasari said irrespective of the political affiliation, the artistes should join Hazare in his fight against corruption. Actress Jeevitha said there was no alternative to Jan Lok Pal for which Anna Hazare had been fighting, because 80 per cent of the politicians were corrupt and hence, they need to be made accountable.

Another Movie In Tamanna’s closet

Leading Tamil-Telugu actress Tamanna, who is busy with three Telugu movies (Oosaravelli, Rachcha and Endhukante Premanta), has signed another movie in Telugu. And the latest buzz is that, she will be the lead opposite Gopichand in a bilingual, which is going to be directed by Tamil director Bhupathi Pandian, in Telugu and Tamil. Interestingly, the director was supposed to begin this film last year with Vikram and Ileana in the lead. But the project faced several hiccups and finally had to be shelved because of creative differences between the actor and the director. Recently, Bhupathi narrated the script to Gopichand, who immediately agreed to play the lead in the movie as it would help him reach the Tamil audiences. So things might work out shortly as we could see some action from Gopichand and Tamanna. This movie will reportedly mark the Tollywood debut of Bupathi, who has earlier directed movies - like Devathaiyai Kandaen, Thiruvilayadal Aarambam and Malaikkottai.

Akkineni Nageshwar Rao Doctorate Recognition!

The highly experienced and qualified actor Akkineni Nageshwar Rao was conferred with a Doctorate at the second convocation of GITAM University, Visakhapatnam, on Saturday. Besides Nageswara Rao, Dadi Janki, Varaprasad Reddy of Biotech and Defence scientist V.K. Saraswat were also conferred honorary doctorates by GITAM University president M.V.V.S. Murthi. Nageswara Rao, in his address, referred to the movement launched by social activist Anna Hazare and said cinema is an entertainment industry. ‘One could learn bad and good things by watching a movie. As the future belongs to youngsters, they should not encourage corruption in any way. In fact, a person offering bribe is a bigger culprit than the recipient,’ he said. Akkineni has been the receiver of Best Actor Awards, Presidential Medals and special appreciations, besides Kalaprapoorna, Padma Bhushan, Dada Saheb Phalke Award, Raghupathi Venkayya Award and the recently conferred Padma Vibhushan. Nageswara Rao started his career in the year 1941 with the movie Dharmapatni. He has left an unbelievable foot mark in the Film industry so far playing all kinds of roles since past six decades.

Sharapova Banishes Cincinnati Demons

Maria Sharapova claimed her second title of the year with a threeset victory over Jelena Jankovic in the final of the Western and Southern Open. The Russian world number four battled back from a set down to win 4-6 7-6 6-3 in an epic contest lasting just six minutes under three hours. The Serbian world number 14 looked on course to regain the title she won two years ago after winning the opening set and leading 5-4 and 6-5 in the second. But Sharapova displayed all her renowned fighting spirit to twice hold her serve and then win the breaker 7-3. With both women tiring in baking temperatures, the first six games of the deciding set went against the serve, each time Sharapova breaking back after going behind.

But she held to lead 4-3 and then was gifted the next game as Jankovic served two double faults from deuce. That proved decisive as Sharapova held again to win her 24th career title. It is her first win in Cincinnati, coming 12 months after she led by a set in the final against Kim Clijsters, only to go on to lose in three.

NY Yankees’ Glory

The New York Yankees continued to lead the way in the MLB American League, retaining top spot in the East with their 77th win of the season. Minnesota Twins were the victims on this occasion, beaten 3-0 on the day to surrender the series. Starter Ivan Nova kept Minnesota scoreless for seven innings, with homers from Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira securing the result. Boston Red Sox continue to push the Yankees all the way, though, staying within half a game of parity with a 6-1 win over Kansas City Royals. Carl Crawford and Darnell McDonald both banked solo home runs in the winning cause. Western leaders Texas Rangers lost their series against Chicago White Sox in the most comprehensive fashion - a 10-0 reverse. Simpson’s Success Wyndham Championship

Webb Simpson became the first-time winner on the PGA Tour, after taking victory in the Wyndham Championship at Sedgfield in North Carolina. The 26-year-old American, twice a runner-up this season, fired a flawless final round three under 67 to finish at 18-under and came home three shots clear of compatriot George McNeill. Simpson had trailed by five shots at one point on Saturday after a sticky start to his third round, but surged into the lead by playing holes 13 to 17 in six under to earn himself a two-shot lead going into the final round. He made a steady start to his final round with eight straight pars to remain at 15-under and despite plenty of birdies from the chasing pack no one could join him on that number. Simpson birdied nine to move two clear, but that gap was reduced to a single shot after McNeill, playing six groups in front, birdied 17. McNeil made par at the last to post 15-under, leaving Simpson the task of holding on.

Racing can Red Bull The event was a university racing series, where the youth of the city showed their talents. African Grey parrots African grey parrots are some of the most intelligent parrots in the world.

Both the Congo African and Timneh African species are very bright, inquisitive birds that can solve problems quite well, which makes them amazing to watch and challenging to own also! African grey parrots are well known as the best talking parrots. They are much more likely to learn to speak than any other species. However, do not purchase an African grey simply because you want a talking parrot. The only way to ensure you get a talking parrot is to buy one that already knows how to talk. There are many African greys that never say a word. In fact, having a talking parrot is a poor reason to purchase any parrot! Parrots, especially those as intelligent and emotional as these are, need loving homes which respect them for what they are rather than homes which want to show off a talking bird.

African greys are comical and inventive in their play. In order to keep them from becoming bored, and as a result plucking or chewing their feathers, they need a spacious cage and require a lot of stimulating toys due to their high intelligence and to avoid boredom. Three to five toys at a time are typically enough to satisfy these, but too many toys can crowd the cage. Toys should be rotated and switched regularly to keep the stimulation constant and diverse. For an African grey spending most of its day in the cage, 36”W x 24”D is a good bird cage size.

And does the 3-D make it all more fun? Not particularly!

Even after five films, there’s something dumbbrilliant about the way these films take everyday routines and objects and turn them into absurd death traps. For generations raised on fear-mongering evening news reports about how absolutely everything - from Halloween candy to faulty high chairs and indoor air quality - can kill a person in an instant, the films are a satisfying, wallowing satire of our fleeting paranoiac. Each new Final Destination movie has added a few more icky, anxiety-producing stressors. Past films have had fun with the blazing tanning beds and gym equipment, the new one plays nastily with our fears of laser-eye surgery and spa-afternoon acupuncture.

(The Lasik debacle is particularly gross.) The head-skewering impalements play shamelessly into unnecessary 3-D, but, the death-by-sailboat-mast is hysterically nasty and I will never order a rotisserie chicken again. If all that blood still doesn’t satisfy you, well there’s always the final credits : They’re essentially a huge fan boy super cut of past death scenes (nearly identical to this) amped up with a gobbets and bits of 3-D gore. Enjoy!

get old? Surprisingly, no! Are the death scenarios inventive enough? Just enough!

he Final Destination movies have always begun with their own trailerwithin-a-feature : One character imagines some disgusting orgy of jokey violence that kills off every single character in the film. Then the rest of the feature is a medieval rack that stretches this gruesome fun out to a little more than an hour by killing each human with strong-sucking pool drains, plummeting rocks and eager nail guns, plus an improbable number of fuel leaks and a whole lot of things that go boom : cars, planes, trains, and barbecue grills, to name a few. So if Final Destination 5 gives you the feeling that you’ve ‘seen this all before,’ as one character laments, well, that’s the point : The characters had a premonition and got offed, you saw a trailer and bought a ticket. You knew what you were getting into. Final Destination 5 may not be any better or worse than the first four movies, but it does deliver more of the same merry mayhem.

Like the great Greek tragedies, one has the sense of foreboding as each event compounds the protagonist’s fate, pushing him further and further down the slippery slope, until there is no hope of redemption. It is one of Dilip kumar’s finest performances. And one of Vyjayanthimala’s too.

Expressionism can be used to describe various art forms but, in its broadest sense, it is used to describe any art that raises subjective feelings above objective observations. The paintings aim to reflect the artists’ state of minds, rather than the reality of the external world. This is accomplished through the use of both literal and abstract emphasis of color, texture, obscured subject matter, primitivism, distortion, deconstruction of form, unnatural depth, obstruction, modified reality and surrounding imagery.

For people who love emotions, this is the most interesting form of art.

The movement is especially associated with Germany and was influenced by such emotionally-charged styles as – Symbolism and Fauvism. Unlike Impressionism, the goals were not to reproduce the impression suggested by the surrounding world, but to strongly impose the artist’s own sensibility to the world’s representation. Die Brucke (The Bridge) – Ernst Ludwig Kirchner sought to build a bridge between Germany’s past and future. He found inspiration in the emotionally expressive works of Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch.

Kirchner achieved some fame during his lifetime and was fortunate to maintain a number of collectors for his paintings. With the beginnings of WW-II, however, his work was denounced (as well as his compatriots) as degenerate art and confiscated from museums. He became increasingly depressed by the war and took his own life.

Der Blau Reiter (The Blue Rider) – Wassily Kandinsky and his followers were more spiritually inclined and had close ties with a new section of religious philosophy, known as Theosophy. Kandinsky believed that colours, shapes and forms had equivalence with sounds and music and sought to create colour harmonies which would be purifying to the soul. By this time, Kandinsky had decided that the idea of creating paintings which were pictures of the representational world was no longer necessary. He felt that society was paving the way for a new, more spiritual age. Instead of focusing on the material aspects of life, he felt his paintings could help prepare people to see the spiritual, non-material world. Kandinsky is one of the first (if not the first) artist to create completely non-representational paintings.

e was introduced to DJing in Hyderabad 13 years back, but the roots had taken its place right from his schooling days. He was a self acclaimed DJ in all his college parties.

As a child he loved listening to music especially a lot of English music. Few of his early favorites were George Michael and Michael Jackson. He started out DJing without any intent of taking it up as a profession but the passion was so strong that he is here today as one of the most loved DJs in town. Inspiration for him was always in full force in the likes of DJs such as Bally Sagoo, A-Myth Sharma, Akhtar, Akbar Sami, Zameer, Harish and his other fellow DJ colleagues too. He had consciously imbibed different tunes from all of them and molded it to suit his style. He is spontaneous and always loved experimenting with music which has re-lived through 2500 odd private and professional gigs he played across India. This has strengthened his flair for live remixing and voila.

‘Knowing the pulse of the crowd and keeping my music updated are two important keys for me to keep my crowd entertained and on their feet. The entertainer in me is required to play all genres of music from Hip-Hop to House but my personal pick anytime is BDM (Bollywood Dance Music).

I listen to both Indian and international music. It’s important to know the chart busters from both worlds to create my sets. I love listening to old Hindi songs by the genius composer himself, Mr. R D Burman.’

My crowd always encouraged me to explore my creative side. Doing the live remixes has been an asset for me which was recognized by a music company which offered me to cut my first music album. Thereafter, I did three remix and three lounge albums in succession. From being the in-house DJ of 3 Star and 5 Star clubs and pubs, to landing myself in a business proposition with one of the oldest pubs in town, which is bound to give my career a leap. Life has been kind but it’s only a beginning and the best is still to unfold.

The Hundred – Lie with your back flat on the floor and your shoulders down.

Point your feet and lengthen your body, leading the stretch with the top of your head.

Keep your back flat on the floor, raise both legs and raise your head off the floor. Make sure you keep your neck neutral and your chin tucked.

As you’re keeping your arms extended, begin to lift and lower them about two inches from the floor, while inhaling on the lift and exhaling on the lower.

Do this for 5 up-and-down beats and repeat 10 times until you have reached one hundred.

The Roll Up – Lie on your back with your legs straight, your arms stretched above your head and your shoulders down.

Keeping your back flat on the floor, begin to gradually lift your arms toward the ceiling as you inhale.

As you begin exhaling, slowly roll forward, while peeling your spine off the mat. Your head should remain straight, with your eyes focused forward. Keep your stomach tight, not crunched.

As you inhale again, stretch out over your legs. Then exhale and slowly roll back down to the floor.

Do not pause, but as you inhale, roll up again to begin the second repetition. Do 10 repetitions.

One Leg Circles – Lie on your back with arms at your sides and your palms facing down.

Lift your head and shoulders off the floor, hold the right knee, extend the left leg out.

Keeping the head in alignment and elbows bent, gradually begin to switch sides, grasping the left knee and extending the right leg. Inhale for two changes and exhale for two changes.

Do 10 changes, or 5 moves per side.

One Leg Stretch – Lie on your back with arms at your sides and your palms facing down. Lift your head and shoulders off the floor, hold the right knee, extend the left leg out.

Keeping the head in alignment and elbows bent, gradually begin to switch sides, grasping the left knee and extending the right leg.

Inhale for two changes and exhale for two changes.

Do 10 changes, or 5 moves per side.

The Rocker – Lie face down on the mat, lift your legs and hold feet. Pull your abs in slightly off the floor and legs while you push your ears forward.

Maintaining your strength in your center, exhale as you lift your legs as high as possible.

Now begin to inhale as you allow your body to roll forward and then exhale as you roll back onto your legs.

Control your movement from your center.

Shoulder Bridge –

The Saw – Sit with your legs apart, about even with your hips and toes pointed upward. Lift your arms out to the sides so they are parallel to the ground and wide enough so you can see them in your peripheral vision when you are looking straight ahead. Hold your head up high, as if you were trying to see over something in front of you.

As you begin to exhale, turn your body to the left. Make sure your arms are kept in line with your shoulders and don’t allow them cross in front of your body. Keep your hips facing front.

Continue to exhale and stretch your right arm to your left toe. You should now begin to feel some tension. Try imagining stretching over a large ball on your knee. You’ll want to keep your head down as you stretch.

Inhale as you come back to the center of the position, then repeat on your right side.

Inhale as you roll your hips upward and slowly lift each of your vertebrae off the mat. Keep your abs contracted and only roll up your spine as far as your shoulders, so that only your feet, shoulders, arms and head remain on the ground.

Now, as you exhale, unfold one leg and lift it upward, so it’s perpendicular to the floor. Keep your hips steady at the same height and do not allow them to drop. Use your center strength to hold yourself in place.

Inhale as you bring your leg down and point your toe away from you. Keep your leg straight and try to touch the floor as you slowly bring your leg back down. Then exhale and bring your leg back up.

Lower your leg again and inhale as it touches the floor. Bring your knee back up next to the other leg. Slowly exhale as you roll your spine back down, allowing each vertebra to fall onto the mat one by one.

Repeat this movement with each leg 10 times.

The Ballerina Arms –

Waist Whittler – Lie on your left side, rest your head in your left hand and steady yourself with your right hand planted firmly on the floor and in front of your chest. Keep your chest broad and open and do not curl it down toward the floor.

Inhale and engage your abs, then raise both legs about twelve inches off the floor as you exhale. Hold for a count of four, then lower them to just above the floor. Inhale and raise again on the exhale.

Do this 8 times and repeat on the right side.

Female task force is expanding in an exponential rate, isn’t it? Nearly one-third of the employees in IT sector are women and according to NASSCOM, their figure in India grows up to 38% which is higher than their western counterparts. No doubt, the Indian education system is one reason to the answer why they have taken up writing, business, fashion designing and what not in every other field as men. They are no less and no more. They are equals! You think lesser than half is still not equal? Well then, every change takes time, wait till this one does! But hey, that is not the question! The point is how far the change is good enough.

The more they drift towards a professional lifestyle, the more ignorant they become about their personal agendas. But then, how true is that statement?

W

hen India comes into the viewfinder, we got a few weird stereotypical images.

Snake charmers, dirt, poverty, spicy food, etc… And when it comes on about Indian women, it gets worse (or not?). Even if not entirely wrong, women have come up a long way up here. They play a dual role, one for their home, other for their workplace. But that doesn’t answer the argument to that particularly biased statement. There was a time when women were the idols of the house, then came a time when these idols were tagged idle and then what more. If she said, I want to go out! The man says, ‘why do you need weekends? You are anyway jobless.’ Ok! It is just a generalized form to describe.

People can be worse or not be a part of that underline at all. But then we are talking about women and why they are what they are today, aren’t we?

Independence! The idea of never asking to pay for those bills, the idea of believing in self and not depending on them. The idea of being loved for what is she and not because she spends less. The idea of having a life that is her own and only hers and if you are part of it, the idea of letting the other person know that you cannot rule it. Sometimes, it is merely an obligation to give a better life to their children, instead of being a burden, be another hard earner of the family. But still, the idea remains - of being independent. But many people believe that everything has a threshold point and here it is too. Sometimes, in the process of living a life for self-satisfaction or duty, it seems like they forget that, people around them need their presence and not just in the physical sense. There are women I know who can lower others on that, but most of the level headed professional females? I don’t think so!

Rani lives with her in laws in a very crowded realm of the city. Her husband drives an auto and father-in-law is a peon in a nearby local hospital. Her sister-in-law is studying Chemistry (honours) and takes tuition classes in the neighbourhood for students studying over fifth standard. Her husband’s mother, father-in-law’s sister and her daughter (they lives with them) and she herself, had started the business of making and selling pickles some two years back. Her only son sans siblings is the sole jobless in the family. He is in his Eighth standard. Everyone works in that household. When asked if she ever had a problem with working, she said that - when you are living with like-minded, hardworking people, no one can have a problem with ‘working’. She is best friends with her neighbour, Divya and whenever they get some time out, you will find them sipping tea at Rani’s veranda. Divya works as a teacher in a government school and her husband runs a local store posited adjacent to the lane. Her in-laws are nice people, but are not happy with her decision and believe that her sole concern must be her son and ask why is it so important for her to work when their son earns enough for the family. They do not understand her worries, she says. She does not understand her child’s worry and development, they tell.

Nisha Ray is Rani’s employer. She has a small scale industry of her own and sells pickles and makes some really good profit. She lives near the factory in the penthouse of her office and visits her family twice a week. With a supportive husband and understanding daughter, she has come a long way, but that doesn’t mean people she loves are happy, are they? There might be times when he could not get enough of her even when close, but then odd times is equal to life. Divya, who doesn’t take working as a passion, rather an obligation, towards her family and a duty that in-laws do not comprehend. She understands the dimension of business and wants to save money during her husband’s difficult times. She travels long lengths every day, not for the love of her work, but in hope for a better lifestyle. Nisha, in the other hand is a passionate woman.

She loves her work, just like a man does (again stereotyped). They ask her, is her work more important than her family? She answers with contempt on her face. We have eyes, we see from both of them, don’t we? My family and my work are just like my two eyes.

No matter, how supportive a family might be or how uncaring a woman might be about narrow-minded complains, this is one thing that will always prevail. A child needs a father and a mother, but it’s the mother that they need the most. I have great respect for single parents (men, here) but is it not true that at some point of their lives, they wished if their child had a mother to who could hug her babies softly in her arms, sob with them, explain them the plights of life, not with words of wisdom but with an unparalleled caring touch and a wet kiss on their cheek, someone who teaches them to be sensitive and loving towards others.

Love is extremely strong, isn’t it? Human beings are made of love, no matter what hardships they might have faced; they know and feel the power of love. And mostly, this love is a quintessential female activity, you admit or not!

But that doesn’t necessarily mean that women draw a black over their household matters when professionally occupied. These mystical creatures of God are a miscellany of all the power, strength, patience and love in the world. The fact is that priorities differ with time. Today, her work, her passion, my dream to be known might have precedence over other matters, remaining days; it might be her in-laws, parents, husband or her children. With a supportive family, this definitely is possible. Business women should take out more time from their daily schedule and spend more time with their family.

Why I mentioned particularly business women is because they mostly tend to journey a lot which up to a limit is good enough, but more profit means more work and more journey and even if not, less leisure time. Those are the times when relationships might slacken and that too without any prior notice. There are women who manage their passion and household with great attention, but we are talking about those who are not great multi-taskers.

Well, women have their own defensive weapons. When men are busy, they are working for the family, when women are busy, they become ignorant. Why is that!?

I wouldn’t argue with that statement. It is partially true that women are always stereotyped to be sitting beside their child, waiting for the husband when he comes back from the day’s toil with a glass of water, hot tea in her hands. The ado here is that even though people know that women are big time adequate to men, in terms of work and making money; it is time for the female counterpart to understand that they have to dish out household work too. Giving more importance to professional lives is not something wrong, because passion can never be a mistake. But if ignorance bothers the family, then it certainly needs to be righted. Giving equal is no doubt the safest option but if that doesn’t work, then a woman should learn to know her priorities at a right way and right time with a right mind and she will definitely outshine.

magnificent residence for Nizams before and situated 2000 feet above Hyderabad, the palace of Falaknuma, which literally means – ‘Mirror Of The Sky’ (in Urdu) has something new to offer, during every stopover and even better – just like it has been passing through its history.

Driving through a bright Sunday afternoon, I was looking forward to witness 52 SEPTEMBER, 2011

Lush greenery, tranquil surroundings and gentle breeze of fresh air, were the first things I felt, as I reached. I initially could hear almost nothing beyond the sound of my own footsteps and chirping of the birds, as I chose to walk through the royal gates; until a guard approached and escorted me to the mansion, on a Golf cart. It had seats of finest and polished leather. Never imagined I would ever get a chance to

The interiors are a splendid interplay of grand marble staircases, gurgling fountains, Venetian chandeliers and intricate frescos, having charming outdoor terraces and a treasure of rare artifacts - including paintings, ancient statues, furniture, manuscripts and books. The palace also has a dining hall made up of the finest of wood, which is the largest in the world and one of the best – The Durbar Hall, embellished with intricately carved wooden ceilings, parquet flooring, regal walnut wood furniture and handcrafted mirrors. Every visitor can experience the famed Nizam’s hospitality which was once the sole preserve of royalty. The Queen’s boudoir and the gossip room had all the opulence. While quiet enough, one may still hear the giggles of handmaidens, private conversations between the master and his aide-de-camp and footsteps which marked the approach of the Nizam and his trusted entourage.

Well, secrets still seem hidden within the undulating folds of 32 acres of land!

In and around and just at the entrance of the palace was a long stretch of greenery, giving out in the air, pleasant smells of exotic flowers. Beautiful peacocks, parrots, doves were many too, which every visitor enjoys watching.

After being guided to the play lounge, I witnessed a grand Piano, the king used to play – so preciously maintained with frequent polishing. Right next to that was a Billiards table with a chart of standard rules framed inside a wooden box, connected to one of the walls inside the lounge. Cue stock of dissimilar weights and lengths were kept in standing positions.

The King’s own cue for playing Billiards was well kept in a longitudinal hard-glass top, wooden chamber, rested upon satin cushioned support - something which will always remain safe and would never be opened. That will be quite a spectacle to watch, if one is a sports fanatic. Andre Domine’s wine book discloses the best brands to consume and never heard before facts on wine pairing. Library here is a collector’s envy, as it is home for extra-ordinary manuscripts, books and one of the most acclaimed collections of the Holy Quran in the country, all of which were selected and brought back by the Nizam himself.

THE ROYAL MENU It had the rarest and the most delicious global cuisines offering its respective dishes. The a la carte was as thick as a mini Bible, displaying an endless list of mouthwatering, highly nutritious and healthy dishes, most of which were of seasonal fruits and herbs. An array of salads, starters, main course, desserts, cocktails and mocktails – one initially has to take a long walk from salad to the dessert counter, just to know the names of the dishes available and then take another walk to choose what you want – that’s how huge table was! After gorging on and satiating my hunger with two types of Biryanis at one go – Hyderabadi Dum and Nizami, I realized that I missed a lot of other dishes, which were equally and in fact, more tempting. One can recreate and reinterpret tastes and traditions of a bygone era. A live recital by a renowned Sitar artist dressed in traditional attire will be, as a form of entertainment to guests at Durbar Hall, during the luncheon and dinner.

Ganesha Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi is the Hindu festival of Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati, who is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees, during this festival. It is the birthday of Ganesha who is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi. While celebrated all over India, it is most elaborate in western and southern India. Lord Ganesha who is widely worshipped before commencing any new ventures - as the God of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. He is the Lord, who is believed to remove all obstacles on the path of the spiritual aspirants and bestows upon them - worldly as well as spiritual success. He is the Lord of harmony and peace!

SIGNIFICANCE OF GANESH CHATURTHI G

anesha could be considered as the most endearing form of all Hindu deities. All Indian festivals, beneath the aspect of delight and celebration, hold the underlying essence or the spirit which has to be captured to grasp the eternal truth. The very story of Ganesha’s manifestation holds the essence of Advaita Vedanta. He has been manifested out of the divine essence of Goddess Parvati. This is a reminder that we all are made up of the same, all pervading essence or the spirit, though we may vary owing to the disparities in shape and form. The truth or the essence is but one, the formless spirit that pervades all destroys the disparities. The celebration of Ganesha Chaturti reveals that while we worship the divine with the form, we ought to bear in mind our formless reality.

Ganesha’s head symbolizes the Atman or the soul, which is the ultimate supreme reality of human existence and his human body signifies Maya or the earthly existence of human beings. The elephant head denotes wisdom and its trunk represents - Om, the sound symbol of cosmic reality. In his upper right hand Ganesha holds a goad, which helps him propel mankind forward on the eternal path and remove obstacles from the way. The noose in Ganesha’s left hand is a gentle implement to capture all difficulties. The broken tusk that Ganesha holds like a pen in his lower right hand is a symbol of sacrifice, which he broke for writing the Mahabharata. The rosary in his other hand suggests that the pursuit of knowledge should be continuous. The laddu (sweet) he holds in his trunk indicates that one must discover the sweetness of the Atman. His fan-like ears convey that he is all ears to our petition. The snake that runs round his waist represents energy in all forms. And he is humble enough to ride the lowest of creatures, a mouse.

Let us thus pray to Lord Ganesha to guide us to worship Him in His glorious form and to lead us to the eternal formless truth which is Sat (truth), Chit (knowledge) and Ananda (eternal bliss).

This idol which collects our positive thoughts and energies is then returned to the earth, either through the rivers or even at home, it carries our goodwill to others and to our environment. We then are united through the earth, the waters and through our goodwill. We need to bring this awareness back into the way we perform our rituals.

celebration Ganesh Chaturthi starts with welcoming these Ganesh statues in colourfully decorated homes and specially erected temporary structures mandapas (pandals) in every locality. The pandals are erected by the people or a specific society or locality or group by collecting monetary contributions. The mandapas are decorated specially for the festival, either by using decorative products like flower garlands, lights, etc. or are theme based decorations, which depict religious themes or current events For 10 days, from Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi to the Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesha is worshipped. On the 11th day, the statue is taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with dancing, singing and fanfare to be immersed in a river or the sea symbolizing a ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of his devotees, this is the ritual known as Ganesh Visarjan. At individual homes the Visarjan is also done on 5th or 7th day as per family traditions. All join in this final procession shouting “Ganapati Bappa Morya, Pudhachya Varshi Laukar ya” (O lord Ganesha, come again early next year). After the final offering of coconuts, flowers and camphor are made, people carry the idols to the river to immerse them.

I specialize in North-West Frontier cuisine. I love Punjabi cuisine! My all time favourite dishes include – Nalli Nihari Khorma, Raani (whole lamb) and I love seafood and tandoor dishes also.

Journey towards becoming a chef –

Many lows and highs! But glad to reach a position, which I always dreamed of. This is an artistic profession, which requires a lot of patience and creativity. A good chef should give in ideas constantly and should get acclimatized to new places and the available food sources around.

Secret of success –

Always do what you love! Do not experiment much with exotic flavours and spices. Do it with simple spices and most importantly, do it with love! That’s what matters!

Asaf jahi Chicken Tikka Ingredients – Boneless chicken leg (1 kg), ginger garlic paste (0.05 kg), Kashmiri chili powder (0.05 kg), cumin powder (0.005 kg), red chili powder (0.01 kg), salt (0.015 kg), garam masala powder (0.005 kg), almond (0.25 kg), hung curd (0.2 kg), chaat masala (0.005 kg), mustard oil (0.05 kg) and lemon juice (4 no.)

Method of preparation – Marinate chicken with half of the ginger garlic paste, Kashmiri chili powder and lemon juice. Keep aside in conical strainer and rest for 3 hours in refrigerator. Make a second smooth paste with rest of the ingredients except lemon and chaat masala. Squeeze marinated chicken and mix with smooth paste evenly. Rest for another 3 hours. Roast chicken in tandoor or oven at 180 degree celcius for 15 minutes. Then sprinkle chicken with lemon juice and chaat masala. Ready to serve!

Chowk ki Tikki Ingredients – Boiled potato (0.7 kg), roasted channa dal (powder) (0.1 kg), nutmeg powder (0.002 kg), yellow chili powder (0.010 kg), green peas (0.2 kg), ghee (0.2 kg), cumin seeds (0.002 kg), garlic (0.002 kg), chopped ginger (0.005 kg) and chopped green chili (0.005 kg).

Method of preparation – Grate potatoes; mix with roasted channa dal powder, yellow chilly, salt and nutmeg. Potato mixture is ready. Heat 0.05 kg of ghee, temper with cumin. Add chopped garlic and green chilis, turmeric and green peas. Cook them well, till green pea gets not too soft. Cool the green pea mixture. Now make 30 gm patties – each of potato patties and stuff 10 gm of green pea inside.

Make round patties and pan friend with ghee in slow flame to get golden crust on both the sides. Ready to serve!

Thandai Ingredients – Milk (1 litre), almonds (0.2 kg), cashew nuts (0.1 kg), vetiver roots (0.05 kg), green cardamom powder (0.05 kg), peppercorn (0.02 kg), saffron (0.2 kg), refined calorie-free sugar (0.4 kg) and fennel (0.03 kg).

Method of preparation – Boil milk and cool it down. Make a powder of rest of the ingredients. Strain them. Refrigerate for some time. Ready to serve!

Music has the power to bring people closer and is an important element in one’s life. From being childhood friends and what they love to do, to creating a bond stronger than friendship – marriage, Samina Khan and her better half Ustad Raza Ali Khan, have come a long way…

Samina Khan, Fazle Ali Khan & Raza Ali Khan Raza Ali – We belong to Khasur Patiala music lineage, which is around 800 years old, right from the time of Hazrat Amir Khusro (the most prominent Sufi saints of India). My grandfather, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, was one of the greatest legends in Indian classical music. He was also a Padmabhushan awardee. Having learned music from him, I have performed in Middle-East, Morocco and almost all the countries of Asia and Europe. The Indian music fiends across the nations have supported and appreciated our music, which is always a feel good factor for any music artist.

Samina – A granddaughter of Moin-ud-Dowla, I represented Paigah family and my great grandfather was Asma Jha Bahadur. We were the second nobles after the Nizams and we are very close to the Nizam family. I am the only daughter to my parents (Nawab Ghaziuddin Khan and Begum Shamim).

FALLING IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER Samina - My family was very close to Raza’s and we both loved music equally. That’s where it all started and music brought us together. Having known each other since child56 SEPTEMBER, 2011

hood, I learned music from my father-in-law and fortunate enough, I became his daughter-in-law.

Raza Ali – It was a typical cat and mouse relation initially, when we were kids. She was so gorgeous and I fell in love with her when I was 15 and I got married to her, when I was 23.

The Balu Hakak lane in Kolkata is where we had a residence and we had several good memories connected to that place, one of which being - the first place to visit following our marriage. The entire family was together! Therefore, in many ways than one, it will remain special for us. I even used to perform musical concerts there. Kolkata really is a Mecca for music. Back here in Hyderabad, we used to have a palace in Basheerbagh, which is now dismantled and new constructions were built over it.

Samina – The times we spent in Kolkata will always be special. Every day we used to involve ourselves in - Shagirds. We had disciples visiting over and used to follow the ritual of tying the red thread around the wrists. Desserts like Mishti Doi and Rasgulla will remain my all time favourite.

Raza Ali – I used to visit Hyderabad when I was a kid (with my Dad) and I was impressed with the culture and traditions here. Hyderabad is my favourite place in India and we have decided to settle here. To live, I do not find a better place than this in the country. The city still has the olden days charm and my very close friends live here too. For me, in this era, Hyderabad still reminds me of those times when music and poetry were very much alive. The city makes me feel even more special because, Samina and my son were born here.

Fazle Ali Khan – It is very special and I am fortunate enough to have parents like I have now. They have been extremely supportive, gave me ideas and helped me to do whatever I wanted to. I was born and have spent my entire 23 years here. The city has wonderful nightlife also. I love the people and the culture here. I got used to the city so much that, at times it gets a little difficult in adjusting, when I travel to other cities or abroad. I miss the Dal and Rice combination food, particularly the typical breakfast dishes, in other places. Maestro’s Inc. is a music school we own and we have participants from all over the world, visiting our residence.

Father & Son

TRAVELLING MEMORIES Samina – I love travelling, particularly when we three are together.

Place doesn’t matter as long as we have the company we want. We love visiting sanctuaries, wildlife, greenery, beyond out farmhouse – all in our car, as we prefer car journey. The best part is it’s so adventurous and the travel time passes by, just like that. I enjoyed my stay in Saudi (because of the pilgrimage there) and a lot of other places like Pakistan, Muscat, Iran, Dubai and Sharjah where Raza too had a lot of musical concerts. Dead Sea is a beautiful place! Within India, I enjoyed holidaying at Punjab, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam and other north Indian places.

I am foodie! My husband loves to cook too, at home. Though he is not too specific about what is made at home, I make sure I cook the best and the way that he likes. He never says no to whatever I make. My son is particular about food. He first tastes food at a restaurant and if he likes it, he then takes us to that place. Learning music from his dad, he also accompanies him to all the concerts.

CRAZIEST THINGS WE DID Samina – Stealing corns from the neighbourhood farm when I was in my teens – It was a huge gang of friends! We all went on a long drive and on the way; we saw fresh looking farms. We stopped by, filled a huge white bag of corns, but while running away, we were caught! I used to tease my husband a lot! Before marriage, I remember, I once offered him a flower inside which I had sprinkled some red chili powder and made him sniff that.

Raza Ali – I had a habit of putting wax into the lock holes and the keys never used to go inside (when I was in my 5th standard). But one day, my Dad came to know about this mischievous habit of mine and warned me not to do that anymore and that’s when I had to give up that silly habit.

Who is a better cook – Raza Ali – Definitely, Samina.

Samina – My husband makes good Punjabi dishes, during special occasions. But I am a better cook.

One best thing about each other – Raza Ali – Samina is supportive and understanding.

Samina – Raza has a lot of patience. At times, even if I get mad at things around, he remains silent.

Your favourite pastime – Raza Ali – I like playing war games on computer besides my all time favourite sports – Cricket, Football and Badminton.

Samina – I listen to music.

One thing you love about each other – Raza Ali – Samina is cool, gracious and open-hearted. She is a part of me. All these put together, she is a lovely person.

Samina – Raza is my strength and my weakness also.

One thing you learned from each other – Raza Ali – I learned a lot from Samina. She is also like a teacher to me.

Samina – I am trying to be as patient as Raza is.

Mosaic Mirror

The technique of mosaic was already being used in ancient history. It is simply the assembly of pieces such as glass, marble, ceramic, porcelain, stones, etc., to produce a new pattern on objects such as wall murals, buildings, artworks, and much more. Today the technique is still being used. Especially in the Mediterranean areas of southern Europe and in the Middle East, you can see wonderful examples of this craft technique. It is so easy to learn and everyday objects such as wood, vases, glass, pottery, etc., can be altered into treasures that will be cherished for a long time. Glass nuggets are uncomplicated to use for projects such as the one above but you can create designs and pictures using broken pieces of pottery as well...

• Mix your grout until it is a smooth mixture.

For this project you will need • Mirror with plain wooden frame

• Spoon the mixture over your object and spread it to completely cover.

• Glass nuggets in colour of choice, mosaic tiles or broken pieces of ceramic or porcelain

• Use a damp sponge to spread and smooth it within the grooves.

• Grout mixture in white or beige

• Place the glass nuggets / mosaic square / stone etc as per your design.

• Plastic gloves

• Allow the mixture to dry 40 minutes. Using a damp sponge with a drop of vinegar, carefully wipe the tiles, until all of the thin grey grout mixture vanishes, leaving the tiles clean. Clean the sponge regularly with fresh water.

• Old plastic bowl and spoon • Mosaic or jewel glue • Masking tape

• Let the item dry overnight so that the grout hardens and next day its ready to use.

Instructions Add masking tape to the outside wall of the mirror and also to cover the complete mirror surface. This will protect them from the grout.

If making a straight object, it is helpful if you measure and draw the appropriate lines leaving a small space between each stone for the grout mixture. Once you are finished, add a drop of glue to the first space to be covered and press the tile into the space. Continue and completely cover the object in the pattern you would like this.

MASERATI QUATTROPORTE GT S The Quattroporte Sport GT S is the most exciting combination of luxury sedan and performance sports car that Maserati has ever produced. The design of the new Quattroporte Sport GT S has a sporty emphasis, yet does not compromise on the style and elegance which have always epitomized Maserati’s flagship model. The designers have succeeded in their aim of giving the car a sportier edge whilst preserving the integrity of the original design. The combination of the redesigned bumper and the new grille, bestow the front end of the car with an immediate visual impact. Turning to the bodywork, the sweeping wing mirrors are more aerodynamic. The car appears poised as if on the starting blocks, ready for action with its racier set-up perfectly complementing the new 440 bhp power unit. The Quattroporte Sport GT S comes with two new types of 20” wheel rim - multi trident rims in light aluminium alloy as an option and seven-spoke light alloy rims which have undergone the dark chrome treatment. The seats, which are state of the art in terms of ergonomics and comfort, have a stylized M for Maserati on the backs. The central sections of the seats are upholstered in perforated Alcantara, for optimal breathability and a firm support during hard cornering; Alcantara is also used on the side panels, the front armrest, the steering-wheel and the gear lever knob. The material used is the groundbreaking is TitanTex, an ultra-lightweight aluminium-coated titanium fiber, making it even more special by a specific processing, which gives the interior a high-tech, high-performance look, as well as a shinier, more three-dimensional overall appearance. The car is fitted with the most powerful engine in the Quattroporte range. Capable of 440 HP at 7,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 490 Nm at 4,750 rpm, it raises the car’s performance to unprecedented levels. These figures have been achieved not only by modifying the engine’s electronic control parameters, but also through in-depth development of the racing exhaust system, a real jewel of engineering installed on this version.

The car is also equipped with the MC-auto shift software package for racing-style control of gear changes. For the most enjoyable, highest-performance driving experience, an electronic gear shift indicator in the middle of the dashboard tells the driver when it is the ideal timing of the gear change; this system, which enhances the pleasure and satisfaction of the driving experience when truly putting the car through its paces, is complemented by Trofeo style extra-long paddles behind the steering-wheel, ergonomically shaped for easier gear changes on the most demanding roads. The car has a high performance braking system developed by Brembo. The 360 mm brake discs benefit from dual-cast technology - cast iron for the braking surface and an aluminium hub. The electronic power steering is direct and precise at speed, so the driver knows what the car is doing. At the same time, it is light and easy to use at lower speeds and when manoeuvring. The most important lighting functions have been improved. The front xenon cluster now boasts the adaptive light control system. This produces a brighter and clearer beam, compared to conventional bulbs. The lights also automatically track the movements of the steering wheel, so that the beam points to the inside of a curve (up to a maximum of 15º). For safety reasons, when the car is travelling above 120 km/h, the system returns to a traditional fixed position.

KOENIGSEGG AGERA R Equipped with special Michelin tyres and a custom made Thule Roof Box – Speed Racer, Koenigsegg is ready to attack the ski resorts! The Agera is designed with the minimalistic; less is more philosophy in mind. It is proportionate, compact and muscular. Its timeless, efficient and distinctive shape is truly a testament to time. The Agera manages to stay true to the original philosophy, shape and size of the original CC. At the same time, it looks and performs like something belonging to the future. Not only are the engines developed in-house, they also have class leading characteristics in many important areas.

To mention a few are - lightest and most compact hypercar engine in the world, weighing only 197 kg complete with flywheel, clutch, dry sump system and Inconel exhaust manifold with turbo. The low engine weight is quite astonishing, as the Agera engine also has class leading power and torque characteristics. To give an example, the Koenigsegg 5 litre V8 bi-turbo engine develops more than 900 hp on 95 octane regular fuels and more than 1100 hp on E85 bio fuel. The Agera produces over 1000 Nm of torque from 2500 rpm and in the Koenigsegg Agera R format the engine has a peak torque of 1200 Nm over a 3300 rpm rev range, showing great flexibility. To give a hint of how different the Agera engines are compared to other production car engines, it is easy to look at the BMEP value (Brake Mean Effective Pressure) in the cylinders during maximum power output. The best production diesel and petrol engines from other leading manufacturers have a maximum BMEP of around 22 bars.

The Agera engine has a BMEP of 28 bars running on 95 octane fuel and the E85 bio fuel Agera R engine has an astonishing BMEP of 30 bars. The reason why Koenigsegg can obtain such BMEP figures is due to critical factors like - a unique shape of the combustion chambers, improving the resistance against detonation and high cylinder head clamp load, enabled by a specially designed engine block. Exhaust manifold and intake plenum trumpets are designed to ensure absence of RPM peak resonance and back pressure, an efficient ejector pump system reducing the crankcase pressure and aerodynamic losses and a connecting rod design reducing TDC dwell time and therefore enabling higher mean pressures without detonation.

The newly developed 7 speed gearbox for the Agera features - world’s first dual clutch system for a single input shaft gearbox. The Agera’s unique carbon fibre monocoque chassis is designed to achieve its maximum stiffness without a roof, as the roof is detachable and stow-able in the front of the car. The Koenigsegg carbon monocoque chassis has an astonishing stiffness of 65.000 Nm/deg and only weighs 70 kg including the integrated fuel tanks.

The ABS braking system operates on massive 392×36 mm and 380×34 mm ventilated and drilled ceramic discs, for unparalleled braking performance and zero fade regardless of track or road condition.

NEWEST GIZMOS APPLE MACBOOK PRO The first thing that you will notice in the performance of the device, especially if you are a MacBook Pro user, is that the device feels a bit snappier.

It is powered by an Intel Core i7 2.7 GHz dual core second-generation processor. The battery life has improved owing to the new age processors and the absence of a dedicated graphics card. The full size keyboard is great to type on and is backlit, making it very comfortable and easy on the eyes in the dark. The ambient light sensor on the device ensures that you never have to adjust the keyboard light or the brightness of the screen

manually. The left of the device houses the standard mag safe charging port, Ethernet port, FireWire 800, Thunderbolt/Mini Display port, Two USB 2.0 ports, SD card reader and a headphones port. The right of the device houses the 8x Super Drive that can read/write dual layer DVDs. Again here, the option of a Blu-Ray drive would have been appreciated. The web cam in the 13-inch MacBook Pro supports 720p HD video for video calls.

MAC OSX LION With Mac OSX Lion, Apple has really pushed gestures to the fore, enabling a more touch screen like experience with the speed and fluidity of a keyboard. Inertial scrolling, pinch to zoom, pinch to open Launch Pad, swipes for Mission Control, spread gestures to open the desktop and many more - in all, we get the whole nine yards. One can now also enable or disable location based services. Versions allow users to reboot a particular file and walk through the various edited versions of it. For instance, if we edited a Word document on the 1st September and then re-edited on the 2nd and 3rd we could walk through all the various edit cycles of the document.

LaunchPad was one of the most heavily promoted features of Mac OSX. The intention was to give users an iOS like interface for scrolling applications on the Mac. Another interesting ability Lion has is the resume functionality, which basically allows users to start their machines with all their previous apps in an open state. Users generally do not shut down their machines as it takes a long time loading apps and now Apple has provided a slick solution. Apart from all the smart improvements, Apple has revamped the apps which come preloaded on Lion. For starters, all apps are full-screen. So one gets to utilize the full spectrum of the display unobstructed. The experience is very iOS-ish and people who rely on keyboard short cuts will take their sweet time adapting to the gestures on the TrackPad but once the transition is over awesomeness is guaranteed.

The most striking feature of the D8000 is the almost non-existent bezel. It is just 1 cm wide. The TV as a whole is extremely thin. Unlike most HDTVs, the D8000 comes in very stylish silver. The colour really stands out and coupled with the super thin bezel, gives the illusion of a 55-inch window.

Even the Samsung logo is illuminated and looks very cool to start with. This TV is a sea of features. One cannot overstate the amount of features which come built in this. As far as connectivity options go, the D8000 is armed to the teeth with 3 USB ports, 1 audio optical out, 4 HDMI ports, a single VGA port, a single audio-video port with an adaptor and a single component cable port through an adaptor. It has 3D capability in which the depth of field can also be adjusted and also the television up-scales 2D to 3D. The television offers smart TV capability, which offers users a web browser, smart apps developed by Samsung including all the standard social networking goodies and the games as well. The TV also offers a full suite of picture modes with detailed customization options. The D8000 comes with 3 USB ports and has the ability to natively handle popular video formats such as DivX, .Avi and Mpeg-4. The audio playback through USB quality is good and the D8000 had no difficulty in playing mp3, wma and AAC files.

The TV will make your jaw drop with its awe inspiring design and the same can be said about its picture quality but the Smart TV functionality will just give you more bragging rights than some real functionality. Interestingly, Samsung also provides a Picasa app, which syncs to ones Gmail account and shows off the entire library of images on the beautiful display. There is no doubt that the Samsung D8000 Smart TV boasts of stunning design and also class leading picture quality.

HTC FLYER The Flyer features a uni-body design, which is immensely classy. If you happen to miss the large HTC logo on the rear, you could easily mistake it for an Apple product. The back is covered by a layer of aluminum, with a bit of plastic covering the ends. It features a 7-Inch display, Android Gingerbread instead of Honeycomb and a stylus. HTC provides a suave leather case for the device, lined with felt-like micro-fibers, headphones, the HTC Magic Pen, the USB cable, the charger and the Flyer itself. The front of the device has a 7-Inch Gorilla glass coated display with a 1024x600 screen resolution. Cleverly, HTC has adopted two sets of stock Android buttons, which are touch based - one set for landscape usage and the other for portrait mode. There is also a 1.3 Megapixel front facing camera, which is optimized for landscape mode usage. The right hand side of the device holds the volume rockers; the top end is home to the power button and the 3.5mm audio out, while the bottom end of the device has proprietary HTC connector. The particular port is a Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) enabling us to view content on large HDTVs. The HTC Flyer is no lightweight when it comes down to multimedia. It has a rock solid MP3 player, a 5-megapixel camera that can shoot HD video at 720p, a crisp display and some real loud stereo speakers. Sound quality is more than decent and the Dolby surround sound tech works its mojo to the tee. The Super LCD display is very clear and has impressive viewing angles.

Five applications which it has are – Snapbooth, Friend Stream, Notes, Reader and Watch.

Uniquely, the tablet allows the use of a stylus-like pen to draw and write. With the pen, you can take notes, sign contracts, draw pictures or even write on a web page or photo. There is no way to stow the stylus in the device itself, but you could use the provided carrycase. It is easy enough to lose styli even when housed inside a phone or tablet and without a good stowing mechanism you might have to buy a new stylus more often than you like.

Very few things give them more satisfaction and contentment, than to watch their students attaining eminence and success, as they grow older. A short note below will exemplify the significance of Teachers’ Day within the city, how students observe this occasion and what they wish to give something to teachers, in return…

In India, 5th September is identified as Teachers’ Day, as a mark of tribute to the contribution made by teachers to the society. Teacher is given the importance of God in the eyes of many cultures. They are created by God, just for the purpose of imparting knowledge and creating a better universe. Many of our hopes for a more socially just, more sustainable, more tolerant and more peaceful world rest on the shoulders of the teaching profession. The world we leave to our children depends in large measure on the children we leave, to our world.
