September
Greetings Readers!
The month of festivals is here and nobody can wait for it. One of the highly celebrated festivals of India is here and during this time we make beautiful memories and enjoy till the 10th day of the festival. In this issue, we have covered most of the things everybody would love to know and have added a pinch of facts and figures with leisure. Learning is one of the crucial things that we have ever gone through and are going through, there’s no age limit for learning. As on 5th September, we celebrate Teachers Day where all the young minds of India show affection and gratitude to their gurus by performing dance, music, drama and many more that make them laugh. Movies are one of the most influential things. So, for you, we have written a small piece on the history of films. There are few facts as well which may seem funny and silly but that’s how people were introduced to movies in those times. There are so many things that happen around us and we are not really aware of those of the people behind that. To encourage and inform you, we have written about these hidden heroes who have brought a better change to the society. Earlier travelling was something that was done to enjoy the destination but now the journey to that destination is something that everybody enjoys and loves to so. They say they learn from it or teach other, this has become the journey of their life. We have taken the journey of five travel bloggers who share their experiences from 5 different places. Hope you enjoy reading the magazine as we enjoy making it for you. Wish you have a beautiful month ahead. Cheers!

Every three years, more than 30 million Hindu worshippers gather for the Kumbh Mela in India, the world’s largest religious gathering, in order to wash away their sins. With massive crowds descending on small cities and towns, stampedes inevitably happen, and in 2003, 39 people were killed during the festival. In 2014, then 15-year-old Nilay Kulkarni decided to put his skills as a self-taught programmer to use by building a tech solution to help prevent stampedes. Learn more about his invention - and how it helped the 2015 Nashik Kumbh Mela have zero stampedes and casualties.
Bahamas
The roughly 700 islands that make up the Bahamas lure millions of visitors to their white-washed shores, duty-free shops, fishing and scuba diving excursions and luxurious accommodations each year. Families that flock here tend to indulge in the diversions of Atlantis Bahamas and other mega-resorts, but this diverse island chain also offers a range of activities away from the hotel zone. Nature enthusiasts can explore pristine protected areas like the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve (on Eleuthera) and Lucayan National Park (on Grand Bahama Island) or take it easy at one of the country’s many beaches or private islands. Bargain hunters, meanwhile, can patrol the marketplaces in Nassau (the country’s capital), in Freeport and on Paradise Island for the best duty-free deals. And for history buffs, ruins and artifacts from the colonial era and indigenous peoples like the Lucayan and Arawak Indians can be found on San Salvador, Cat Island and other Bahamian islands. It’s no wonder why the Bahamas has become a popular vacation destination.

Over a Cappuccino with Rachna Chabria “Mrs India- She is India” pageant in Delhi, winner of Mrs India South crown”
Tell us about yourself? “I am an engineer by education, content writer by choice, a go-getter and adventure lover by force of nature. I have 5 years of work experience in the fields of technology, media, and marketing which has given me exposure and understanding of parallel worlds. Among the varied roles I dutifully play in my life, I love being a mother to my 20 months old girl the most. While being a freelance content writer I maintain a personal blog by the name Carpe Diem that means ‘seizing the moment’. This is a motto I believe in because life is short and each moment matters. I’m also a state and national level athlete since school thanks to which I’ve learnt to be disciplined and confident. I believe in fair opportunities, healthy competition and that right habits and principles are the key to person’s character. I also love challenges cause they bring out qualities that make a person stronger and wiser. As a child, I was taught about the importance of patience and tolerance. With these qualities imbibed in me and my will to give back to the society, I wish to create opportunities for the unfortunate and spread happiness and by being a good example; I hope to inspire future generations.” What were you like in high school? Contrary to my image now, I was a tomboy in high school with short hair, slimmer and I was always on my feet. Having being raised in a joint family of humble upbringing, my parents 24 SEPTEMBER, 2018 - TULIP
I was taught patience and tolerance, and discipline always came first. Thanks to this learning, I was an all rounder throughout my education but sports always had my heart. I was also known for my big heart that wouldn’t let another classmate stay out of school picnics due to financial crisis. Even then I grabbed everyone’s attention with my energy and enthusiasm in every field. I was and am a jack-of-all-trades. What inspires you? I’m easily inspired, even with the smallest of deeds and kindest of words. People who rise from their tragedies, thrive and take an extra effort to help others thrive inspire me. I was one amongst the 45 contestants in the finale who came from different walks of life and each had their own story to share. I met women who walked into the venue with a smile knowing that they had to leave an ill father back home or that their family had just been a victim of a crime or they had to leave an infant home just to give oneself a chance.
LIFESTYLE
I was inspired by women who fought issues such as financial crisis, being a single mother, domestic violence, hatred towards inter-caste marriage, health problems, depression, etc. and came out strong to be the voice of power and change. What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently? I’m blessed with a huge family but sometimes it can be quite a show to walk with such a huge crowd around you. So to celebrate my pageant win, my family surprised me with a get together at a restaurant. I was happy to say the least but when the time for the cake arrived, I began to sense something fishy. They all stood up and sang the congratulatory song at their highest pitch. I drowned in my sheepish smile thanks to all the attention I received from the nearby tables and staff. Also, the cake was delicious without a doubt but the message had me in splits. It said ‘Congratulations Mr. South India’. :P Why did you decide to compete in this pageant? Pageants provide a platform to voice your ideas, vision and ultimately express oneself. I chose to participate in Mrs India-She is India as it not just another beauty pageant; it is a pageant with a unified purpose to tackle a social taboo - Domestic Violence. I decided to participate in this pageant as the purpose synced with my belief that there is no greater force than a woman determined to rise. I believe in leading by example and I want to set standards for women as I see them – strong and successful. This pageant has given me visibility and I wish to use this diligently to make a difference. Currently, my brainchild, Project Tokri, which aims to make every childhood joyful, is under construction as I connect with volunteers and promoters from different walks of life. Do you think that pageantry objectifies women? In my opinion, pageants are misrepresented considering that a part of the evaluation involves physical appearance and its parameters. But qualities such as confidence, humor, presence of mind, talent, personality, etc., are taken into account while judging any participant. Because at the end of the road, when a person wins, they represent their state or nation on a higher platform and one requires more than just looks to receive such an honor.
Rapid Fire What is your favorite hobby? I love writing and hence maintain a blog under the name Carpe Diem (www.rachnachabria. wordpress.com). It’s more as a keepsake for my daughter. What is your biggest addiction? Coffee, Shoes and Miniatures of every kind :D What store do you shop at most? I usually shop online at Pernias Popup, Shein, Forever21, Nordstrom, etc. What is your best feature? Mentally it is my patience and the ability to see the best in every situation. Well, physically it is my legs. What is your least favorite type of music? Rock and Roll What is my favorite cuisine? Thai Favorite place to hide out? To me, it is not a place but a sense of being. I am me when I listen to music and dance away with my daughter and husband in our room, under a photo wall that we very lovingly curated. Quality of life or quantity of life? There is no fun in living 70 years of mediocrity. Definitely quality of life! What scares you? Hair fall Largest strength? My husband is my rock.

Q&A The
MEN’S GROOMING SPECIAL Jay Kishan Pawar from Trufitt and Hill.

M
en’s grooming is really a thing these days! To all the men out there who love taking care of themselves and their physical health, following are the most common queries related to men’s health and grooming, exclusively answered by Jay Kishan Pawar, Assistant Manager (Training), from Trufitt and Hill, Banjara Hills:
What is your take on beard? Is it worth all the fuss and hype? I myself personally love wearing a beard as I think it adds that charm, masculinity and a different spark in your personality and also it helps you to hide your extra fats. A round face ideally can’t carry off the short fade hairstyles but if a healthy beard is maintained, they too can wear short hairstyles. A proper beard style which suits you will make you a much better looking person, different from the crowd.
What is the most common service requirement of men these days? The most regular service requirements at the salon are maintaining the haircut and knowing which hair products work for your specific style. Facials, cleanups and other face care & scrubbing services. Managing the beard either by styling it or clean shaving it. Manicure & pedicure for Hands and Feet care. Trimming and shaping of eyebrows and Waxing unwanted body. What are 5 best grooming products that are essential to men’s grooming? A healthy nourishing shower gel. A daily facial cleanser and advanced facial moisturiser which also works as an SPF protector. A healthy shaving cream or a shaving gel. A shampoo and conditioner according to your scalp condition and hair type recommended by the professional. A hair styling product, like a mousse or gel Also wearing a signature scent never goes wrong! How much grooming is appropriate for 28 SEPTEMBER, 2018 - TULIP
There are only 2 golden rules of the industry1. Client is also right. 2. If not, see Rule No. 1. men? Basic grooming is always essential for every man. You need to have haircuts after specific intervals and style your beard after specific intervals. Clean shave only according to your generic beard growth, if clean shave is preferred. Trim the nose hair and eyebrows and clean the hair off your ears and neck. Maintain basic nail hygiene. Wash your face at least 3 times a day with a mild face wash to avoid breakout, as it’s essential to wash because of sweat blocks pores and leads
How to take care of the beard? To maintain a beard you should use a daily face cleanser to clean the facial skin as the sweat beneath can be a reason for different skin issues. A shampoo and a conditioner for beard hair every alternate day is a must. If you’re using a styling product on your beard then cleansing becomes imperative on a daily basis, right before going to bed, followed by a moisturiser. Always groom the beard with the help of beard balms which
work as a leave-in conditioner. This also helps to keep the beard moisturised and crisp. Trim it after specific intervals for getting rid of stray hair. Never ignore any kind of irritation beneath the beard. Every time you sweat, the surface of your skin is covered with deposits of salt and other bacteria excreted through your pores. Jumping in the shower washes those deposits off your body to an extent, but without purposeful scrubbing, they can linger beneath your facial hair and begin to itch. What you need is good exfoliation, but it’s tricky to reach the skin in this area. Try this: Buy a medium-bristled toothbrush and dip it in a gentle cleanser or beard wash. Wet your face with warm water, or climb in the hot shower to soften hair and skin, then use the toothbrush to work between and beneath your beard hair to gently scrub away dead skin. Works wonders!
or bath hydrates your skin and preps your skin for shaving with a reduced risk of skin irritation. The softer your hair is, the easier it is to shave smoothly. After this, exfoliate your skin because, it aligns your hair for a uniform shave and sweeps away the dead skin, allowing for a closer and better shave. Pre-shave oil is an absolute must product to use, as it helps to lubricate the skin and reduces the risk of cuts and irritation. Use a good quality shaving cream for smooth lathering with the help of a badger hair brush. Shave in the direction of your hair growth in downward strokes as shaving in the opposite direction causes irritation and bumps. A closer clean shave requires you to shave against the direction of your hair growth, but the likelihood of skin irritation increases. Apply an aftershave lotion to complete your routine.
What are the top beard styles according to you? And what is the least attractive beard style Following are some beard styles I personally think are the best: • The groomed beard, which is a midlong beard, where you always keep the beard combed and just get rid of the extras of your beard and keep it tidy by using a beard balm or beard oil.
Will shaving make the hair grow back thicker? Yes, if someone has been shaving in an inappropriate way for a very long time, then it does affect the skin tone, hair growth and texture.
•
The fuller beard, which is a long U shaped beard kept tidy and uninformed by combining and extracting stray hair and keeping the moustache and cheeks well defined. You need a healthy facial hair growth for this kind of beard. Beard oil is a must to maintain the hair and skin quality.
•
The long beard, which is a beard where you trimmed both the sides parallel to each other and the ends have a curved shape for a cool zigzag look. One can use balm or oil for this kind of beard.
•
The angular beard, which is a beard groomed to perfection. A neck taper contrasts the defined lines of the beard giving a proper angle.
•
•
The short stubble beard, which is a beard grown over just a week or a week and a half. The long stubble, where your facial hair is a bit longer than the stubble and smaller then a proper beard and the length varies accordingly.
The goatee and the chin curtain are the beard styles that I find least attractive. How to take care of the skin while and after shaving? If you are clean shaving on your own then do it after a hot or warm bath as a warm shower
With changing hairstyles of every season, what is one hairstyle that stands out as a timeless classic? The trend of long and unkempt hair is a timeless classic. It always has been. Across various sets of people, everyone loved to carry that look. Women love it too as it gives men a hot, raw and defined look. Although maintaining the long unkempt look is not that easy for everyone, you need to have a lot of patience until you get your desired result. If you are planning for a similar look, then prep yourself for the extra care you have to invest. This look is hot and sexy, but also laid back and cool at the same time and is precisely why it is so popular. What are the top hairstyles that are a speciality this season? Are there any quirky hairstyle requests by people? Mention one. The following are some of the top-rated hairstyles this season: • Side Quiff with Classic Tapered Sides. •
Classic Pompadour with Taper Fade.
•
Layered messy long hair.
•
High fade with cropped fringe.
•
Bald fade with long natural top.
•
High Fade with Hard Part and Curly Hair.
•
Classic Messy Long Hair.
•
Skin Fade with Solid Fringe.
•

The quirkiest request I received recently was when a client wanted his entire head to look like a football in support of the FIFA world cup. I also did a bald look with a dreadlock pony
Do you cater to skincare at the salon? If yes, then what are your top rated services in Skincare? Facials and Peel-off masks are our top-rated skincare services. How to keep the skin supple and youthful and avoid wrinkles, age marks and dark circles? Hydration is the key for a younger looking skin. Water constitutes up to 65% of your body, and depriving yourself of it is a big NO if you want to achieve fabulous skin. Drink 8-10 glasses of water to keep your skin hydrated. Eat a Balanced Diet. Follow a skincare routine that includes cleansing, toning and moisturizing every single day. Cleansing gets rid of the gunk, toning closes your pores, maintaining skin PH and moisturizing is extremely important for the skin texture. Exfoliate once in a while. Stay sun safe by using sunscreens and moisturiser as it helps prevent early wrinkles and other skin issues caused by UV rays. Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30+ and always sleep well and on time. Avoid sulphate based products, don’t smoke, eat and drink honey, oats, turmeric, yoghurt, coconut oil, red wine, and coffee. What do you do when you’re faced with a situation where a certain style or look wouldn’t suit your client but they’re stubborn and want it? We try to convince the client as much as we can by showing examples of before and after pictures and explaining why he shouldn’t wear it. But when still clients want it and there’s nothing you can do about it, there are only 2 golden rules of the industry1. Client is also right. 2. If not, see Rule no. 1 Are there any side effects to waxing/ threading the eyebrows or face for a guy? How is your experience in this field? No, there aren’t any side effects unless and until your skin is super sensitive or the barber isn’t that experienced in this field and doesn’t know what he’s doing. As I love doing what I do, I enjoy every moment while working!

The walls

This is our pick of the month and here’s why! Dakshin is a timeless and iconic restaurant one should visit when you are ready to eat some wholesome soul food. Not only is the welcome warm, but Dakshin also goes classic with its interiors. Pleased with the delightfulness of each unique dish, when you touch the main course, the curries will take you to another world. You can accompany your main course with rice and spongy and crisp Appams, or string hoppers “Idiappams”. From the regulars, the renowned Iyer’s Trolley- a live trolley named after Chef Paramasivam Iyer, which serves small adais, banana flavoured dosais and the crunchy kunnipaniyarams- is another cherished fare at Dakshin. Muuvankaya which is aubergines slow cooked in a paste of green chilli and poppy seeds, will bring about a burst of subtle flavors to your mouth. Ananas mensakai is pineapple curry made with byadgi chilli and coconut. Who would have thought that pineapple would taste this remarkable. You want to eat some mind boggling chicken? Naatukodi koora: A Telangana and Andhra specialty, country chicken in a spiced curry with poppy seeds and cashew had us going back for bites in the whole course; it was soft, tender, juicy and cooked to perfection. Another innovative dish, Kaadai Thengai Curry: Farm bred Japanese quails in a paste of shallots, green chilli and coconut also is one satisfactory part of the meal. Chef Sakala Shankara, known for preparing his dishes with love pampered us with a special yet simple pappu with minimal spices, cooked with spinach and ghee. Don’t miss out on meeting him while you go there, his passion for food reflects in every dish you taste at Dakshin. It was our soul food of the day that carved its way to our hearts! Other unexplored additions are: Kodi Gajaala, a spicy preparation of chicken with onion & green chilli. Nathakodayoor Yera Kozhambu: prawn curry with a special blend of spices and coconut and Uragai Mamsam: mutton curry of tomato, vinegar and pickling spices! For desserts, we had Aadikumayam: Halwa of rice and lentils served piping hot and very scrumptious to eat. The mouth-watering Kadal Patchee: a frozen speciality of Keelakarai made with milk, khoya, china grass and pistachio which was equally delicious. ULAVACHARU
“Ulavacharu” is a delicacy from the Krishna and Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh and the owners named their restaurant on this special delicacy..They have two branches in Hyderabad- one at Jubilee hills and the other at Gachibowli. Truly, Ulavacharu is one of the premium and popular restaurants of the city. If one is looking for that authentic Andhra cuisine, it is a must visit. The place has tons of photoframes adorning the walls and the aesthetics are further enhanced by the ambience which has a very traditional feel to it. Their hospitality is pretty impressive as well. Classic Telugu songs, which play in the background add further to the authentic feel. The food is a delicious combination of Andhra and Rayalseema cuisines. They have wide varieties of thalis and pulaos- the Raju Gari Kodi Pulao has a special significance. It is spiced with a subtle sweetness and is hot, steaming and flavorful. It is one of the highlight dishes of the place. Korameenu (fish) chips, Ulavacharu Lo Peethalu (crabs) are very popular among starters. Ulavacharu has always been known for its authentic Andhra and Telangana cuisine but it’s their thali that’s less spoken about. With some amazing dishes in it, no Telangana thali can be missed and those yummy pulaos, spicy yet delicious filled with your choice of meat, topped with your quintessential ingredients of thali like sambhar, pachadi, rasam, majjiga , papad and dry are perfect. When you get a taste an entire region in a plate, there is absolutely nothing to complain about. You should try their thali for a complete regional showdown of flavours and spices. SPICY VENUE
3
The Spicy Venue comes highly recommended as a place for authentic Andhra food and some signature dishes. The menu has a range of dishes including IndianChinese and generic Indian food but Zubair loves sticking to their local, traditional dishes and always ends up having MLA Potlam Biryani & their thali. The food at Spicy Venue has remained surprisingly consistent over the years. MLA Potlam Biryani is a light and flavourful almost pilaf like biryani wrapped in an omelette. Delicious, comforting, satisfying and also large enough to feed at least thali. The thaali surprisingly does not have a dessert. But boy, it does have everything else that you need. The vegetarian thali consists of poori, papad, dal, kurma curry, gongura pachchadi, pulao, dondakaya vepudu, potlakaya curry, sambhar, rasam, perugu and plain rice. The thali varies daily but the one he loves has the best kadhi, really tasty bhindi (coming from someone who despises bhindi) and a tangy dal/pappu. The puris are fabulous (they give two per person) and papad as well. Their curd is absolutely fresh and thick. Zubair personally recommends mixing the curd, dal, ghee and rice for the best flavor combination. Oh, this just even sounds so delish! No. 265/S, Road Number 10, Jubilee Hills, Ph : 072070 95522

Another amazing place to indulge in scrumptious veg thalis is Bikanerwala. It is a great mix of North Indian and Rajasthani cuisine- everything you can imagine is in the buffet-starting from salad section, Bikanerwala snacks to chaat sections and of course the thalis. It offers quick food that is high on quality is of great taste. Zubair has tried different types of chats, veg momos, noodles, fried rice, chole bhature, North indian mini and normal thalis and all of them have been delicious. every single time. My all time favourite pick from their thali section is “Thali Tawa Paratha”- a thali which is served in combination with paneer subzi, dal makhani, mix -veg, salad, papad, paratha (2 pcs), Indian bread (2 pcs), raita, pickle and a sweet. The thali overall is a burst of good flavors in your mouth with each thing tasting equally good! Door # 3-5-821 , Hyderguda Road, Basheerbagh, 040 6656 1111

If you haven’t eaten here then your trip to Hyderabad is simply incomplete! A complete choice of south-Indian cuisine with a lot of varieties like no other. This place has a touch of perfect homely ambiance for you to relax and eat a hearty meal! All of it from Real Telangana, Andhra to Tamil Nadu style food, all at decent prices. A The bonus is a good enough portion and kind staff. Always try the South Indian veg Thali with a Chettinad chicken dish on the side. There’s a dry (dondakkai) subzi, a gravy curry, a Korma, dal. Pooris are something to begin with. Drumstick and onion Sambar, rasam are very flavorsome and tasty, goes well with the rice and fried papad. The chicken is well cooked, tender and succulent. Coming to the gravy, it is quite tasty with the familiar black pepper dominance of Chettinad curry. Lastly, a cup of dahi is a soothing end to a spicy meal. If you have a sweet-tooth, there is a cup of hot kesari. The service is excellent and the ever-busy waiters will always be at your service. The thali here is something you can’t afford to miss! it over a period of time. The best part of being a makeup artist at least for me is to see a smile on my client’s face when they see the result. For every girl, her wedding is really special. Trusting me for her big day and walking out of my studio with a huge smile is what I wish for! It feels so good!” says farheen.
“Since my husband was so supportive about my work and passion, he pushed me to pursue it but I wanted to learn from the best and wanted to bring something different on the plate. I went from Bangalore to London for my training and got trained by Ambreen Ahmed, one of the top three Asian bridal makeup artists there”, says Farheen
When asked about her signature look, she reveals, “I don’t have one single look that I would say is my signature style, but if you want me to describe my style of makeup, I like soft glowing skin with nude lip shades and slightly heavy defined eyes. I always believe “less is more and this kind of more is beautiful”, and that is our very motive”, says Farheen.
She went back to Bangalore where she worked for a year with many different brands like Lifestyle, Max Fashion, Monrow Footwear. Farheen always wanted to always get into bridal makeup. Aditya Mehta
(Founder of AMF-Aditya Mehta Foundation) His story tells the tale of a man who went through the mightiest of ups, only to be pushed down brutally by life, but does his story end there? Being an extremely difficult child while growing up, he never had family expectations. He was looked upon as a failure for many years. At 16, Aditya decided that he would make something out of his life and dedicated all his energy towards a venture with minimal funding. With a few ups and downs here and there, he soon flourished in whatever he took up. Sadly, his life took a major toll when he met with an accident which left his right leg crushed between the tires of a bus. A few days of immense pain later, his leg had to be amputated from above the knee. Life was at an all time low for him as he had to walk with a prosthetic thereafter. But he remained resolute. With emotional succor from his parents, he began to walk insistently with the prosthetic. He was finally able to walk up to 10 kms by himself. It was during one of these walks that he chanced upon a hoarding of a cycling club. The picture glaringly reminded him of his insufficiency to do normal things like cycling. That ignited an undying fire inside him to do the unthinkable. He began to pursue cycling professionally. It was never easy to begin with, he fell down innumerable times and the pain that it caused him was inexplicable. However he went on to become the Limca Record Holder for being the first amputee cyclist to complete 100 kms in 4.5 hours. He also won 2 silver medals in the Asian cycling championship only days after his prosthetic leg came off during practice. He also holds records for cycling across London to Paris and climbing 9000 ft. in the process and also from Manali to Khardung La at 17582 ft tall. He had been presented with a new lease of life that he embraced with passion. On this course of life, he met several other Para-athletes and realized how insufficient they were with finances and resources. In order to meet with the requirements, he started AMF. The organization helps people with certain disabilities to pursue their choice of sport and lead a self sustaining life. He started Infinity Ride which is their signature fund raising event every year, where he leads a team of riders across Indian cities. The event is the center of media attention with various celebrities supporting the cause. He turned his shortcomings into a fruitful effort that now lends its hands to so many others in need. A true indefatigable hero indeed!

Talk about all rounder! Zabi has always loved dogs since childhood. When he was just 13, he found an abandoned dog and brought it home. He decided to keep the pet to himself after unsuccessful attempts at locating his owners. Unfortunately for him, his pet died a few days later due to a bacterial infection which he assumes was the reason why he was abandoned in the first place. It left him heartbroken, but also with a greater zeal to do something for animals that could have been abandoned and living in unsuitable circumstances like his poor little pet. This gave his life a whole new purpose and meaning. He started off by volunteering at local NGOs and shelter homes and did his bit towards these animals that desperately needed love and affection as well as nursing and care. Since there weren’t many organizations that worked on par with the requirements that he was looking for i.e. rehabilitating, retraining and rehoming abused and abandoned animals, he started his own NGO, U/S-3 of the Indian Societies Registration Act, 1860, by the name “A place to Bark in 2014. Since he was still in school then, he was able to juggle his time between his NGO and studies, but as he joined college, it became 44 SEPTEMBER, 2018 - TULIP

After a lot of convincing and permissions from higher authorities, KG Reddy College of Engineering and Technology has welcomed a variety of animals and birds like dogs, cats, rabbits, turkeys, and ducks into their campus and has become the first Animal Friendly Educational Institute in the world. Today, he actively conducts awareness sessions and encourages people at schools and colleges about animal care and welfare, while also taking care of his NGO and shelter home, providing medical assistance to injured animals and rescuing animals from pathetic conditions. So far, he has rescued over 500+ animals and rehabilitated around 3000+ animals. Zabi observed how pets are often abandoned due to old age or diseases. 50 volunteers from his college have joined him in the mission to aid such animals covering over 86 colleges and universities to explain about animal rights. He is in the process of building an animal sanctuary in Hyderabad on a 12 acre land that was donated, but since the building expenses are sky rocketing, funds and resources are still a big issue. He was always considerate towards the under-privileged and wanted to help them to the best of his abilities. To start with, he was more inclined towards the slums and poor people, visiting a lot of “under the poverty line” areas in Hyderabad and working towards understanding the needs and necessities of the people there. It was a few years ago when he, along with a few friends of his, randomly decided to distribute chips, biscuits and chocolate to Kachiguda Government School. But what he didn’t realize was the happiness and content he felt when he saw the happiness emanate through the faces of the kids. It was priceless! Today, a few years later, with the help of social media and the generous society, he is able to help many people through various charitable events and undertakings. Earlier, not being satisfied enough with these minimum efforts, he wanted to find out ways to create sustainability and financial freedom amongst individuals and families. Being a student, he was aware of all the opportunities around him, he was able to understand that lack of basic education resulted in lack of awareness and acceptance of poverty as “fate” by individuals and families. Thus, he formed a Core Team to support different verticals and Freedom Again Foundation was born. The Pet Cafe is an initiative launched by Deven Baheti and Shruti Darak - two animal lovers who wanted to start Hyderabad’s first indoor Pet Cafe that is also Human-Friendly. A cosy space nestled in the luxurious laps of Banjara Hills, The Pet Cafe houses rescued pets, and welcomes all furry friends, with open arms - along with their ‘Hoomans’. The place serves delectable vegetarian food from Sandwiches, Burgers, Nachos and Fries for humans to Pupcakes, Doggy Bowls and Sausages for your furry buddies.
Our experience
The day we visited the Pet Cafe, they had a Raksha Bhandhan event happening which is something different from how we usually celebrate. It was quite simple, they gave out cute rakhis to the pet owners and they had to tie it to their beloved pet. How cute is that? The atmosphere was so fun and loving that it became “THE PARADISE” for both humans and the animals. The dogs and cats running around, making friends and socializing was something we enjoyed the most. Though it was an indoor cafe we did not feel claustrophobic at all. They also had books and a few games that could entertain you while your pet is busy socializing and having fun. The cats had a separate room because you know ‘they are cats’. The dog side was loud, energizing whereas the cats’ side was calm, peaceful and cuddly. We tried out the Nuggets; Cheese Maggie, Cup Cakes, Chai, Garlic Bread and trust me everything was so yummy and pocket-friendly (price=quantity=quality). The pet food seemed equally delicious and all the pets lapped it up with little to no fuss. Deven, his family and Shruti take care of this place and they are one of the sweetest people I’ve met. They literally interacted with everybody and made everybody comfortable, even the animals. The food service was quick and served right, the place was well maintained and hygienic for everyone.

Teachers OUR REAL HEROES
A teacher takes a hand, opens the mind and touches the heart, on this occasion we speak to the teachers in the city who love what they do.
Arti Mishra
Teacher at St. Ann’s High School Tell us something about yourself? I am a teacher/educator in St. Ann’s high school.
How did teaching become your passion? Teaching has been my passion since I was very young, but I got a chance to teach only after my own children grew up. Both my daughters studied in St. Ann’s and seeing them study convinced me to become a teacher as well. How many years of experience do you have in teaching? I now have over 14 years of experience. I started my career from the primary school and was promoted to teach the middle sections. This is one of my fondest memories through my career. As it’s not often you see teachers getting promotions. I felt I did well and all my hard work paid off.
How do you feel when children look up to you as a teacher? It feels amazing when I meet students who were little children come up to me and say I had taught them. It’s very rewarding. How important is it for children to have good teachers for a good foundation? A teacher has to play a number of roles due to the many number of students in the class. Each child is different and unique and requires time and attention. When my students shower love on me even many years later, I feel I did something right. How have things changed over the years with teaching? With children spending more time at school than at home with their families, it becomes even more important for teachers to be empathetic. A teacher has to be a mother, friend and counsellor as and when the situation demands. She/he also has to be a strict, a hard-task master whenever needed as it is the life and career of a student at stake. Do you think technology can replace teaching at schools? Technology has played an amazing role in teaching. Children are now better informed with a lot more resources at their disposal that will help with their understanding. With interactive videos and texts available online, the students are able to study and prepare better for life.
Tell us something about yourself? I have done English Literature from Madras University and B.ED from Osmania University. I am a quick learner. I possess good communication & inter-personal skills. I love travelling, cooking & gardening.

replace knowledge and experience that comes from a teacher.
How many years of experience do you have in teaching? I have over a decade of experience in teaching. How do you feel when children look upto you as a teacher? I have a great responsibility to meet the expectations and to be a role model. How important is it for children to have good teachers for a good foundation? A teacher alone cannot necessarily teach the necessary skills & values. Parents are the first teachers. Parents and teachers are equally important in shaping up the students. Teachers should have an extra edge to mentor the students. Do you think technology can replace teaching at schools? Technology can only be a helping factor to learn, but it cannot 48 SEPTEMBER, 2018 - TULIP

What is your take on schools new teaching methods to keep themselves updated? New teaching methods are very essential to maximise a student’s learning and thinking so that they can practically apply the skills in real life. How has the journey been so far? It has been a remarkable journey. Every year we encounter new students and become a part of their lives. We do our best to support, encourage, and inspire the students to succeed in achieving their goals. One thing you love being about a teacher? I love sharing my knowledge with the students. That is the best part about being a teacher!

Tell us something about yourself? Calm dedicated and an energetic individual mixed with immense versatility How did teaching become your passion? Teaching young minds in order to transform their future has always been my passion How many years of experience do you have in teaching? 20 beautiful years and counting How do you feel when children look up to you as a teacher? I feel a lot of responsibility on my shoulders to teach them the right things the right way How important is it for children to have good teachers for a good foundation? Children spend 6-8 hours of their valuable time with us. We see a reflection of our teachings in them. It goes without saying that a major part of the child’s future is a mix of what their parents and teachers teach. So it’s highly important we have efficient teachers. How have things changed over the years with teaching?
Tell us something about yourself? I’m a teacher since 21 years and have done my Masters in Sanskrit and Hindi. I always had a passion for teaching since childhood. How did teaching become your passion? As I child I admired teachers who taught me. My mom used to teach me everything I studied and I used to play these teaching games of correcting books and giving marks to someone. It always excited me. How many years of experience do you have in teaching? I have 21 years of teaching experience and I’mHOD of Hindi in DRS InternationalSchool. How do you feel when children look upto you as a teacher? A teacher is always the student’s second parent! I’ve taught kids from the 5th standard till the 12th. I sense their way oflearning and understanding things and help them to do better. I connect with them like they’re my own kids. How important is it for children to have good teachers for a good foundation? Teaching is all about making students learn. Good teachers understand students well and help them learn content which is helpful for them and improve their personalities for their future benefits! Knowledge is king and helping students learn that is important. How have things changed over the years with teaching? It’s become a routine now. I maintain my professional and personal life well. School is my other family where I spend most of my time. I connect well with my kids even more after teaching kids of all ages. I understand their psychology better and that’s the reason my own kids are so close to me now.

We don’t follow the typical textbook format anymore. It’s much more than that these days. More practical forms of teaching have been introduced in order to make children understand concepts better. We also focus on teaching children important values that one must always uphold. Do you think technology can replace teaching at schools? Technology has now become a boon more than a bane. It makes a child more interested in lessons. Ofcourse we shouldn’t forget to keep in mind that old methods of teaching should continue as well. A mix of both will always be healthy What is your take on schools new teaching methods to keep themselves updated? One of the things that I love about the new age technology is its interesting methods to imbibe knowledge in students. So it’s quite interesting I must say. How has the journey been so far? This is a journey I want to live for as long as I can? One thing you love being about a teacher? It’s hard to express it in words. Imagine! Hundreds of students look upto me in every batch that I teach. The satisfaction I get in my workplace is irreplaceable. I look forward to teaching everyday.
Suniti Misra
Teacher at DRS internation high school
Do you think technology can replace teaching at schools? Well, technology is changing rapidly. Our schools are already moving from books to laptops where exams are also computerised but one can’t complain as we are moving along with the world. During my time, I never thought I would become so tech-savvy but I am now and it’s helping me too! What is your take on schools new teaching methods to keep themselves updated? We have to be in terms with the new syllabus and teaching methods. DRS follows the CBSE board and International Baccalaureate. IB has an international standard base which is one of toughest courses in the world. It has more practical than theory but they make you do thesis and theories also. Most importantly, there is psychology which a constant learning during all the years of education. Schools have to apply the knowledge on those course and help kids mould into better individuals. It’s more CAS - creativity, action and service. How has the journey been by far? The journey has been tremendous. I’m the Head of the Department with a great team by my side and wonderful teachers. It’s been a great journey. One thing you love being about a teacher? Connecting with my children. They’re family to me. It’s the love and respect I get from them that drives me to go to school every day and teach them to be better.

Festival That Unites Us! Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10 day Hindu celebration of the elephant-headed Lord Ganesha’s birthday. He is the more youthful child of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Ganesha is known by 108 distinct names. He is regarded toward the beginning of customs as he’s viewed as the Divine force of beginnings. He’s generally and alluded to as Ganapati or Vinayaka. Hyderabad, the city of Nawabs, is outstanding amongst other spots to see Ganesh Chaturthi festivities in India. While Maharashtra might be known for initiating the celebration and making it prevalent, Hyderabad absolutely does not disappoint in the size of its Ganesh Utsav merriments. The Ganesh Pandals in Hyderabad are of the biggest in the whole nation, each and every year. The spectacle and grandeur you find in this city are not as much as what you can witness in, say, Mumbai or Pune. This year, you would already be able to sense the celebratory state of mind in various parts of the city. Khairatabad is known for its attractive pandals 63rd Khairatabad Pandal will include the tallest Ganesh idol in the city. A mind-blowing 57 feet idol was designed by 120 individuals from Machilipatnam and Adilabad. The Ganesha’s idol is 40 tons, and it took 3 months to be assembled. For 2017, the Khairatabad Ganesh will get the Sheshnaag, the 14-headed snake god. The laddoo will be highlighted on the idol which is intended to be as photorealistic as the original laddoo of Tapeswaram. In Hindu sacred writing, Lord Ganesh is popular for his affection for desserts, particularly laddoos. The Modak is a dumpling-like sweet in Maharashtra that is closely connected with the folklore of Ganesh. The Khairatabad Pandal is visited and worshipped by people from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra throughout the 11 days. It has been a fixture in Hyderabad for each Ganesh Chaturthi since 1954, yet the coordinators might consider shortening the idol from this year onwards. In any case, families and devotees will, be seen gushing into Khairatabad and different pandals all over Hyderabad. In spite of the confusion, traffic jams and heavy security, devotees come to take the blessings from Lord Ganesha. Ganesh Chaturthi festival in Hyderabad has a major trend which is the use of eco-friendly clay idols rather than the regular PoP idols. Everybody has gradually started using and prefers these eco-friendly clay models due to the increasing awareness in the society because the plastic Ganesha idols that are immersed in the water bodies are harmful and affect the living creatures in the water. The state government has formally asked natives to opt for environmental friendly clay and is likewise conveying that mud idols push forward the Green Ganesha movement. Fake lakes have been set up for the Ganpati Visarjan 11 days later; keeping in mind the end goal is to decrease the effect of mass immersions at Husain Sagar Lake.

FEATURE Chakrvarthi, Student Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha — the elephant headed God. He is the elder son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Ganesha is known by different names and he is popularly known as Ganapathi and Vinayaka. He is worshipped at the start of any rituals and ceremonies as he is considered the God of Beginnings. Ganesh Chaturthi festival begins on Shukla Chathurthi which is the fourth day of the waxing moon period and ends on the 14th day of the moon period in the month of Bhadrapada (Aug-Sep). This year it falls on September 13, 2018.
Neha Jain, Model It’s easy and not that difficult for the puja arrangements. I’ve been bringing Ganesh idol to my home since three years now. All we do is decorate the house and a particular place where we establish the idol. Make delicious food items. And, do aarti twice a day. But, before that, make sure that you have everything you need for Ganesh Chaturthi puja. You can even check out some items online and buy them at affordable prices. In the end, for me, it is all about enjoyment and nothing else.
Mauritius
Ganeshotsav is being celebrated in Mauritius since 1982 by a group of Hindu people which comprises 52% of the aggregate population on this island. Actually the main day of this celebration is an open occasion in Mauritius. In spite of the fact that it’s not on a huge scale, the celebration is conducted in regional temples or individual homes. It is wonderful to commend this celebration as the Ganesh icons that are made out of mud are built up at the temples and homes. Couples visit the temple, offer aarti and perform traditional dance.
United Kingdom
Hounslow, the principle town in London also welcomes Lord Ganesha on a large scale. More than 5000 people show up every year for the celebration of this festival. The idol is placed at the Laxmi Narayan Temple followed by a grand aarti, with traditional food, dance and fancy dress competition throughout the days. It ends with a procession to Ham, where the idol is immersed in the Thames followed by 4000 devotees, police protection and 50 volunteers ensure people’s safety. Ganesh Chaturthi is best celebrated with the soul of eagerness for the preeminent God of intelligence, fortune, success and remover of all obstacles. Regardless of where you are the spirit of devotion for Lord Ganesha is intact with every Indian.
Canada
Toronto, the capital of Canada has numerous Indians that get the Ganesh icon from their individual homes in India. Indeed, even with
constrained assets they make it amazing by meeting up, singing aarti and offering prasad. Despite everything they follow the Indian culture through this celebration.
USA
With a substantial Indian population living in the US, the celebration is conducted on a huge scale. They import symbols from Mumbai and the festivals proceed till the eleventh day. The celebration draws in more than 10,000 guests in the states. The huge puja highlights aarti, music and dance in the social environment.

History of
FILMS
While the experience of watching motion pictures on cell phones may appear to be an uncommon takeoff from the common idea of watching films today, in some ways the small-format, single-viewer display is a return to film’s early roots. In 1891, Thomas Edison, together with William Dickson, turned out with what they called the kinetoscope, a gadget that would become the ancestor to the movie projector. The kinetoscope was a cabinet with a window through which individual viewers could experience the illusion of a moving image (British Movie Classics). A perforated celluloid film strip with a sequence of pictures on it was quickly spooled between the light and a focal point, making the illusion of movement. The viewers could see in the kinetoscope, caught events and performances that had been arranged at Edison’s film studio in East Orange, New Jersey, particularly for the Edison kinetograph: exhibitions, dancing ladies, cockfights, fights, and even a tooth extraction by a dental specialist.

Believeing that viewers would get exhausted watching scenes that they could simply see on an easygoing stroll around the city, Louis Lumière asserted that the silver screen was “an invention without a future,” however an interest for movies developed at such a fast rate, to the point that soon delegates of the Lumière organization were going all through Europe and the world, demonstrating half-hour screenings of the organization’s movies. While film at first rivalled other prevalent types of entertainment-circus, vaudeville acts, theatre troupes, magic

is maybe why the earlier films reported occasions in a brief yet didn’t recount stories. Amid this “novelty period” of silver screen, crowds were more intrigued by the wonder of the film projector itself, so vaudeville halls promoted the sort of projector they were utilizing. Filmmakers had only ever created single-shot films that lasted a minute or less, Méliès began joining these short films together to create stories. His 30-scene Trip to the Moon (1902), a film based on a Jules Verne novel, may have been the most widely seen production in cinema’s first decade. However, Méliès never developed his technique beyond treating the narrative film as a staged theatrical performance; his camera, representing the vantage point of an audience facing a stage, never moved during the filming of a scene. In 1912, Méliès released his last commercially successful production, The Conquest of the Pole, and from then on, he lost audiences to filmmakers who were experimenting with more sophisticated techniques.
shows, and numerous others—in the long run it would supplant these different amusements as the primary business attraction. Within a time of the Lumières’ first commercial screening, contending film organizations were putting forth moving-picture acts in music halls and vaudeville theatres all around Great Britain. In the United States, the Edison Company, acquired the rights to an enhanced projector that they called the Vitascope, held their first film screening in April 1896 at Koster and Bial’s Music hall in Herald Square, New York City. Film’s significant effect on its early viewers is hard to envision today inundated as many are by video images. However, the sheer volume of reports about the early audience’s disbelief, delight, and even fear at what they were seeing suggests that viewing a film was an overwhelming experience for many. Observers panted at the realistic details of interest in movies, for example, Robert Paul’s Rough Ocean at Dover, and now and again individuals’ terrified attempt to escape the theatre during films in which trains or anything moving sped toward the group of viewers. Indeed, even people’s general impression of films as a medium was significantly unique in relation to the contemporary understanding; the moving picture was a change upon the photo—a medium with which viewers were at that point well-versed—and this

What motivates you the most for being fit? “YOUR BODY IS THE BEST PROJECT YOU WILL EVER WORK ON” I live by this quote and I believe in the concept of SELF-LOVE and taking care of oneself is very essential to living a healthy, stress-free life. A workout is like a stress buster for me and keeps me calm, focused and energetic. I want to set an example for the women out there and motivate them to get fit and be strong both physically and mentally to survive in today’s world and this is something which has always driven me and motivated me to be fit.

How does a functional training help a person to lose weight or to be fit? FUNCTIONAL TRAINING is much more efficient than conventional gym workouts as it involves multi-joint and multiplanar movements derived from everyday life. Functional training is not only known for an efficient weight loss but also helps you strengthen your joints and perform your everyday life activities much more efficiently. Functional training performed with HIIT (high-intensity interval training) pattern is the best-known way to get fit and lean. Functional training puts your body in EPOC MODE (excessive post oxygen consumption) which means the calorie burn goes on for the next 36-48 hours of your training. Functional resistance training which involves multiple muscle groups during movements triggers all those small muscle groups and fibres and helps you attain that lean and fit physique you always dreamt of.
FITNESS What routine would you suggest one should follow now days in terms of diet and exercise? Nowadays 90 percent of the population is leading a sedentary life because of their profession and lifestyle. I would suggest 30 minutes of physical activity every day whether it be running, yoga, or even playing a sport would do. I live by 80/20 rule when it comes to the diet where you choose 80 percent of your daily calories from clean sources like whole grains, lean meat, seasonal fruits, vegetables and healthy fats, remaining 20 percent to enjoy your cravings (portion size is the key). Your body is just like your car or bike, you give them right kind of fuel they last longer. Give your body healthy fresh food to lead a healthy and a happy life.
There are numerous supplements in the market, an Individual is confused whether to take them or not with so many suggestions they acquire. What’s your take on it? In the fitness industry, everyone has a different take on supplements. According to me eating fresh and home-cooked meals are something which I strongly believe in which I suggest my clients too. End of the day it’s not about having six pack abs it’s all about having a healthy body. Supplements are not something you can depend on your entire life. When someone is suggesting some supplement instead of blindly using it please read about it and get some information online because no one understands your body better than you do and you should always listen to your body.
What’s the new craze for intermittent fasting? Do you endorse it? INTERMITTENT FASTING is an eating pattern rather than a diet. You fast for a certain period of time (14-16 hours) and reduce your eating period (6-8hours). Research has shown that intermittent fasting triggers fat loss and lean muscle growth (due to the increased levels of HGH and decreased insulin hormone making stored body fat more accessible). I do suggest intermittent fasting for individuals who have hit a plateau in their weight loss journey or for a healthy fat loss and some lean gains.
Any tips you would like to give to our readers? Fitness and healthy eating is something which should make you happy and it’s not a punishment for your body. Be flexible about your methods and don’t starve your body to lose weight which is going to make things worse. 7-8 hours of sleep, clean eating, functional training will give you a lean and fit body.

Picturesque Pondicherry Pondicherry is by far the most photogenic city in the south, it has beauty in every corner- be it buildings, beaches, art filled cafes or food on your plate. Everything is worth capturing. For long, Pondicherry has been known for its French influence and people go there to experience a fair share of French culture. It does indeed have a major influence from buildings to schools, culture to food so much that a complete quarter is named after it, but what many miss is the Tamil influence in the city which is as mention worthy as the French in the city. The city is divided in major quarters but the main ones are the French and Tamil quarters, which cover most of the tourist places worth visiting. Auroville is another major attraction, that most find themselves attracted to in Pondicherry apart from the famous rock beach and paradise beach.

Stay: Maison Perumal Maison Perumal is a 130-year-old family mansion dating back to French colonial times in Pondicherry. The heritage property expresses an architectural character that integrates the vernacular with the colonial in a novel and striking manner. It took them over a year to restore the building and refurbish it with a studied attention to detail that its former owners would have been proud of. Tamil Nadu’s social culture of the times informed its design aesthetic to a great extent. This noticeable ‘less-ismore’ philosophy gets reflected in Maison Perumal’s minimalistic interiors that are adorned with a spare style, yet pay much attention to detail. Stained glass offsets the familiar local white plaster in a telling example of creating a distinct identity. It is how Maison Perumal celebrates its special heritage. The lungi clad men welcome you and are at your service. Lemongrass aroma fills your senses subtly throughout your stay, while you wouldn’t want to let go off the jasmine garland they welcome you with along with a fresh lime and ginger drink. The property has 10 rooms and has a very intimate vibe that helps them serve their guests in the best way possible. All the members of the staff are warm and well aware to guide you, be it about the food or local recommendations. The architectural character is deeply rooted in Tamil culture, with a whiff of French colonial influences. It’s in the details that the property steals your heart, though minimalistic in décor the details get your attention like no other. The stained-glass balconies at the hotel offset the familiar white plaster of local houses to create a distinct identity while the period furniture at Maison Perumal symbolizes a simplicity and elegance that was characteristic of prosperous Tamil households of yore. Again, in deference to tradition and their own obsession for the novel, the rooms at Maison Perumal are fitted with the famous ‘Dindigul’ locks & keys, reputed for their antique and intricate designs.

am visiting; that’s how I try to be different. Luxury is my core aspect, but for me luxury is not a brand, it can be- luxury of time, hospitality, food or even nature. It is a very personal taste/opinion on luxury and that is what I like to share with my readers, hoping it will help like minded people and make their travel planning easier.

One of the many things I love about India is that there is so much to see that I can’t get enough of it. With excitement in my heart, I decided to travel to Kashmir earlier this year. I remember visiting it as a teenager and things haven’t changed much since then. While the situation is still tense, the people in Kashmir are warm and welcome travelers with open arms. Famous for its natural beauty, Kashmir is a land of temperate climate, meandering rivers, lofty waterfalls, deep blue lakes, alpine forests surrounded by flowering mountains and snow-capped meadows which makes a visit to this land a breathtaking experience.

Pahalgam is by far my favorite part of Kashmir, even a week spent here is less. It is the countryside of India that is pure bliss, blessed with best of landscapes, trekking options, horse riding, bonfire nights, breakfast by the river and adventure sports. There is something for everyone. Kashmir touches your soul, heals you in ways nothing can. Waking up to the crisp morning air sipping on fresh kahwa day and night and tasting the local Wazwan that has incredible dishes to savor, will linger in your memories forever, as nothing can bring the flavor of local food in any other part of the world. The boat ride around Dal Lake, the morning climb to Shankaracharya temple, the picturesque road to Srinagar, gandola ride in Gulmarg, the clear sky full of brightest stars, there is so much to experience in Kashmir. The people are very warm and hospitable and treated us like family wherever we went. Their hospitality only made us want to go back for more!
Travelling comes to me as natural as breathing, yet never ceases to fascinate me. I started blogging almost four years ago as a lifestyle blogger, and still going strong on my passion. Food and travel have always been my core, my blogs majorly focus on properties i stay, with snippets of the city i

It truly is ‘Heaven on Earth’ So, travel and find your peace, don’t just visit, live in those places, eat local, get to know about the culture and even if you are not a planner it’s good to refer to blogs and magazines that will give you a firsthand experience of food, tourist places and hotels, that will make your trip easier to plan. Reading a blog doesn’t give you an itinerary but help you make an informed choice about the place you should be visiting.

She has been to so many places in India and her instagram speaks for how true she is to her roots, whether its her sense of impeccable style or her love for Indian food. Sowmya is not just stylish, but adventurous too! “A road trip in Karnataka. Seven days, five cities were the plan of mine. Karnataka welcomed me with lush green, tropical vegetation and an excellent climate. Cruising in the car through the state indeed turned out to be a fun holiday. I visited Bengaluru, Bandipur National Reserve, Mysore, Coorg
and Chikmagalur and If I have to pick a favourite amongst these, then I would choose Bengaluru and Coorg. Bengaluru doesn’t have any world class sightseeing, but it has a young crowd, perfect weather, quaint cafes and graffiti walls. The city has many independent cafes. In the era of Starbucks and expensive coffee, I happened to visit the famous Indian Coffee House located in Church-Street. They are renowned for their coffee. The place has its own atmosphere with chipped paint walls and old style benches which draw your attention. Church Street reminded me a bit of Hauz Khas Village of Delhi. Also, a must visit in the city is the Bangalore Palace, the palace is impressive at the very first look with amazing chandeliers, and majestic decor. Next is Cubbon Park, a vast green land amidst the urban jungle and I happened to visit the park on a Sunday morning which offered me the most fun part-

At every turn, you will find greenery lined up on both sides of the road while you drive through the city making you stop and admire the beauty of Coorg. Coorg has some tranquility in the atmosphere and no wonder it is attributed as Scotland of India. There are plenty of activities to do like nature walks, waterfalls, the famous ThalaKaveri ( origin of the river Kaveri) and also we got to witness Buddhist prayer in Namdrooling Monastery; the monastery is infused with Tibetan architecture and magnificent landscape. Where to eat in Coorg? While returning from Thala Kaveri, you will find many food stalls along the road where you must stop to have a piping hot chai and Maggi, a great combination in monsoon. If you’re looking to have authentic South Indian food, then look nowhere else and head straight to Udupi restaurant. Also, get your hands on a freshly powdered coffee which you can find at every nook and corner of the hill station. A regular traveller, Vishal loves sipping some wine and enjoying life where he goes, not as it comes. He surely makes an effort to travel often and explore food, adventures and cultures. This time he has a story to tell about the beautiful place of Bali. His food shots will make you drool and give you hunger pangs! “From the volcanic hillsides to the sandy beaches, to that “eat, pray, love” experience – Bali is a tropical paradise that has so much to offer to every traveler. I just returned from a 10 days experience and realized there are some places that pull you in the right way – and Bali was one of those. The people, with their wide smiles and accommodating spirit welcomed me in a way that I haven’t experienced since my Bhutan trip. The rich culture could be found everywhere. Temples
occupy nearly every block. The landscape shifts flawlessly from tropical beaches to the lush jungle. And the food – with options from organic/vegan/gluten-free to traditional Balinese fare – is as diverse as my cravings. I travelled to Bali with a group of friends and we packed in so much during our 10

wooden furnishings and earthenware. The experienced ended with a sit down lunch meal that we had prepared as part of the meal.
Here’s listing some of my favorite experiences from my trip: Surfing: The beautiful beaches around Kuta-Legian-Seminyak are blessed with the good waves that makes them a surfer’s paradise. I enrolled into the Rip Curl School to try and ride the waves. From developing my first surfing moves to struggling to stand up – I enjoyed all of it!
KopiLuwak Coffee: It may sound a little strange, but Kopi Luwak is one of the most expensive and delectable coffees in the world with a retail price as high as $700 per Kilo. The main reason for the high price is the uncommon method of producing – Civet Poop. Though a bit skeptical at first, I was ultimately blown away by the intensive craft and art behind the usage of the poop that is required in its curation. The coffee in itself was smooth and had a very unique and earthy aroma to it.
Legian: Legian sandwiched between Kuta and Seminyak is the party capital of Bali. An entire strip lined with bars, night clubs, cheap restaurants, and other raunchy entertainment, Legian is not only good for a night out, but there is also plenty of opportunity for retail therapy. Skygarden is where I’d frequent each evening. Sunset in Uluwatu Temple: Perched 80 meters above sea level, the magnificent Uluwatu Temple stands on the towering cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean splendor. Watching the sunset from here was extra spectacular Trek an Active Volcano: Mt Batur was the perfect adventure that I wanted on the trip. Standing at 1700 meters above sea level, Mt Batur is one of the famous volcanoes in Bali. The trek stared around 4am and reached in time for us to watch the spectacular sunrise over the crater and the mountain that was encircled by a stunning lake. Horseback riding along the coastline: May not be the most classic activity, but I truly enjoyed everything about the horse riding in Bali. Galloping along the coastline, reveling in the sound of the roaring ocean, and trotting through the rice fields was a unique and fantastic experience
Scuba Diving & Snorkeling: The three tiny islands of Gilli offer a Bohemian vibe, laid back atmosphere and a good variety of dive sites. I enrolled for a two day extensive dive course with PADI. After some extensive training – I did my first dive and the whole experience made me fall in love with the unseen underwater world. What a surreal experience it was and as rightly said in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara – diving is like meditation. I can’t wait but go for my next dive again! Kecak & Fire Dance: The Kecak and Fire Dance that I experienced in Ubud was a sight to behold. Almost hypnotic, trance-like, the performance starts with a chant by the thirty odd bare-chested Indonesian men sitting on ground in a circle and in the middle the drama unfolds. Two young princes, a demon king, a damsel in distress, a mischievous monkey- they all play their parts in the ring of unceasing cantillation. Swing above the ocean: While you are at Gilli T – the Instagram worthy picture of swinging above the ocean is the perfect finish to prove you’ve had the most relaxingyet-adventurous time of your life”. he explains
Casa Luna Cooking: There is so much more to Balinese cuisine than Nasi Goreng and Mee Goreng. The Casa Luna Cooking School in Ubud was a one stop place to learn all about the history, culture & religious beliefs associated with food in Bali. I loved how each traditional ingredient was explained, followed by hands on experience in an immersive classically designed kitchen complete with wood-fired stoves, antique TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2018 63
TRAVEL Shagun takes travel to another level, he dreamt about it and is now living it. He left his full time job to travel and he is still on the journey. He is on the way to travel the world but has picked Cairo for his storytelling.
just the flight was about 2 Lakh. That’s when I looked at the Asia, Europe and Africa cusp. A very diverse region, lot of countries, relatively easy visa process and ease of traveling. The country where we would start was Egypt - and I decided to take my parents with us. My dad would always mention how it was his dream to see Egypt, so I had to make it happen. First stop was Cairo! Cairo - it’s crowded, maddening, crazy traffic and noisy - in short it’s Mumbai! You put any one in downtown Cairo or in Dadar and they wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. But then Cairo is one of the most ancient cities in the world and it surely has the splendor to boast about. Must see - Pyramids! You cannot go to Cairo and not think of the mighty pyramids. There is a wonderful day trip that lets you explore the best of Cairo’s ancient history. We decided to break it down into 2 daytrips. We covered Memphis and Saqqara on Day 1 and kept one whole day for Giza.

“Back in 2015 I had this crazy idea that in 2018, I will take a break from whatever job I’m doing and just travel. But then, a lot of thing changed in the next 3 years! I left that job, got a new one, started a blog, fell in love, got married and it was 2018 in no time. Everything was on track though. In November 2017 I resigned from my job and moved to my hometown. Got married in December and then started planning where to go (yes, that’s how late I actually sat down to plan this trip). Time wasn’t a constraint, money was. So I had
Memphis - just about 20 kms away from Cairo, our first stop was the Memphis Open Air Museum. This place was the first capital of the Egyptian Kings. There’s a huge limestone statue of Rameses the 2nd which is one of the oldest in Egypt. Right outside is a big 80 - ton Sphinx that was once guarding the temple of Ptah in Memphis. Saqqara - pyramid of Djoser, the first step pyramid of the world was made here. And then the ones at Giza became famous. We went around exploring this region and found the Pyramid of Unas which was open that day. Usually all pyramids are now closed to the public. But we got a chance to enter this one all the way to the tomb. An extremely narrow path led to this huge hall which housed the tomb with a lot of things engraved on the walls. The Egyptians built it to sustain afterlife, hence a lot of cattle, drinks and clothes are drawn to provide the soul. Pyramids of Giza - we had seen so many pictures but still that first glimpse of the Pyramids was blissful. Perfectly pointed triangles popping out on the horizon. They are spread over a huge area so we took a tanga to cover all the spots. Pyramid of Khufu is the tallest and the others are Khafre and Menkaure. We went to the farthest point on a hill which gives that magical picture with all 3 Pyramids in one frame.

Khan-el Khalili – The mystical ancient market of the Egyptians felt like we went centuries back. This market sells everything right from magnets to 10ft statues of the Gods. While there we went to check out El Fishawy, which is a tiny café that is crammed
with people, waiters, performers, sellers and some Egyptian coffee. Egyptian Museum – When you have a history that starts from 3000 BC, rest assured that the museum will have a of stuff. This one is easily the richest museum in the World. We spent around 6 hours in there to cover almost 4000 year of History. It almost felt like heading back to school and all history chapters coming to life. The mummy of Tut Ankh Amun is the star of this place. Food in Cairo – They can eat all day and all night. The food scene just never stops in Cairo. If you want a sheesha, every 5th shop has an outside seating with some shisha and tea. We fell in love with the Koshery, which is rice/spaghetti mixed with a sauce and topped with fried onions and chickpeas. Papa Abdo – Sandwiches Tom and Basel – Koshary El Fishawy – Coffee Kababgy El Azhar Farahat – Grilled Pigeon Kazaz – Quick eat”. he says.

My husband and I decided to quit our jobs and go on a long honeymoon. While he did all the planning, I did the packing, he did the bookings and I did the shopping... He did the saving, I chalked the budgeting. From Dubai to Amsterdam, we covered 20 countries in 5 months. It has been one crazy journey, a

Live Life Easier The word Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that evolves from a combination of two words, “Ayush” meaning life and “Veda” meaning knowledge. The All-New Lexus RX 450h
A
Arguably the most attractive car in Lexus’ current range in India, the new fourth-generation RX is a car you just can’t ignore. Its rakish design and extremely aggressive detailing make it stand out from the crowd, even in the Rs 1 croreplus segment. But it’s the design that draws your attention to it first. And what you notice immediately, without a shadow of a doubt, is that huge ‘spindle-like’ grille up front. The maws are aggressive, the headlights look like a pair of swords and, around the side, that fast flowing roof just ‘floats’ above the rear in an extremely interesting manner. The new Lexus RX 450h is equally interesting under the skin. Built on a stiffened and extended all-steel platform, it uses a longer 2,790mm wheelbase, extremely slippery aerodynamics and adjustable dampers that are ideal for our difficult and variable road conditions. Under the bonnet, petrol and electric power make up the hybrid drive system. The drive system combines 262hp petrol V6 mated to a pair of electric drive motors that put out 123Kw (167hp). Total combined power is 313hp. The combustion engine also makes a decent amount of torque but, most of its 335Nm is delivered at a high 4,700rpm. Further down, the V6’s power is sent to an E-CVT gearbox whose maximum and minimum ratios have been widened to both provide better punch off the line as well as a lower engine speed while cruising. And the RX uses a four-wheel-drive system that is very different as well. Here, drive at the rear is provided via an electric motor, and, to add to efficiency, the rear motor also acts as a generator and charges the battery when the vehicle is braking. A hybrid car’s regeneration system also messes up brake feel so to get around that the RX 450h uses a much improved actuator to help the transition from regen to the brake discs.

AUTOMOBILES
What’s it like on the inside? The low slung dash allows for tremendous visibility and what adds to the extremely up-to-the-minute feel is the fact that the steeply raked windscreen stretches far ahead of the driver. Next up is the huge 12.3-inch screen; only slightly smaller than your flat-screen TV at home, the high-res display is controlled by Remote Touch Interface (RTI). The offset centre console also looks quite attractive. The buttons are pretty conventional, but the manner in which the black and red leather bits contrast each other is quite novel. And then there are metallic slashes and chrome highlights that really do add a touch of class to the cabin. The centre console, for example has chrome slash on only one side – neat. The cabin isn’t as solidly put together as many of its German rivals, and the build feels lighter for sure, but when it comes to fit and finish, it’s right up there with the best. Also impressive are the big and very comfortable seats. The leather is of an extremely high grade, the range of seat adjustment is wide and the fact that they are cooled adds another dimension to comfort levels. Passengers at the back also get cooled seats, legroom is more than sufficient, the seat is very supportive and you can recline the backrest via a button here as well. The RX also comes loaded with kit. The 15-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround System features exquisitely machined aluminium knobs that feel like they’ve been lifted off a high-end audio system. You also get a heads up display (HUD), multiple driving modes like Eco, Normal, Sport and Sport +, and there’s a 360-degree camera as well. Also, to open the boot, all that the driver has to do, as long as the key is in his or her pocket, is touch the Lexus logo at the rear. And beneath the rear cargo area floor is a full-sized spare tire. You also get a massive panoramic sunroof and 10 airbags. What’s it like to drive? On the move, the RX is quite refined, especially when driven in a relaxed manner. While you can’t beat the initial hush of the electric motor, especially the silent take off delivered by this full-on 288V (650V system voltage) hybrid, the RX is also pretty refined once the petrol motor kicks in. Both wind and road noise are kept impressively low, no doubt helped by the double-glazed windows, and the RX even manages to cruise silently with the petrol motor merely ambling along. Ask for more power, and though the performance is there with 0-100kph coming up in a claimed 7.7sec, the E-CVT plays spoil sport. For one, there are no virtual gears. So when you use the paddles and click down, all that happens is that the rpm jumps up a bit. The upside of the stiffness in the suspension is that body control is very respectable. The Lexus RX 450h doesn’t roll mucheven when you are driving it in an enthusiastic manner. The grip from the front end is good enough for it to manage a bit of sporty fun, as it turns into corners crisply and allows you to carry a fair bit of speed through corners. Steering responses are decent, and it feels nicely geared and direct, but there’s very little road feel. Grip levels however are only moderately good on the 18inch wheels of our test car, with under steer presenting itself quite early on.

ENTERTAINMENT Kareena Kapoor Khan Breaks Silence Ever since Karan Johar has made the star cast of his upcoming period drama, Takht, official, fans can’t wait to watch Ranveer Singh and Kareena Kapoor Khan on the screen together for the first time! In the past, Kareena had rejected three projects of Ranveer Singh, including Ram Leela, Bajirao Mastani and Dil Dhadakne Do; but now the Bollywood diva says she is excited to collaborate with the actor. Calling Ranveer one of the most phenomenal performers of this generation, the 37-year-old star said she is happy that they are finally working together. “It is great that finally after so many years I will be sharing screen space with him. It was a long due collaboration. He is just a phenomenal actor. It will be an honour to share screen space with him. I am very happy,” Kareena told PTI. The actor said the film is also special for her, as after a long time, she is working on a Dharma Productions’ project, to be helmed by one of her closest friends Karan. “I have done so many movies with Dharma in the past, but after a long time Karan is directing me. It feels great. Working with Karan is always a pleasure,” she said.
Alia Bhatt pampers Karan Johar’s son
Rakshabandhan was celebrated in Bollywood with great fanfare on Sunday. From tinseltown’s mini royal Taimur Ali Khan to the Kapoors, everyone showered love on their siblings. Well, Alia Bhatt also visited Karan Johar’s house to tie a rakhi on Yash. We know how much she is attached to KJo’s twins, Roohi and Yash. She was one of the first guests from B-town to see the babies after they were brought home from the hospital. In the picture, we can see Yash obediently getting a rakhi tied across his wrist by Alia. The actress looks as fresh as a daisy in a green top with zero makeup. On Diwali, we saw how the Student of the Year actors came together with Karan, his mom Hiroo Johar and the twins for one epic picture. After the kids came home, all of Karan’s friends dropped in to see the little ones. He said in an interview, “People have been dropping in non-stop to see them, they come in shifts, and I’ve been running around serving them tea and snacks. Alia Bhatt comes every other day and sits for hours.” He opened up about how being a dad was like a lifelong dream come true for him.
Kendall Calls out Kris and Kim for not inviting Caitlyn
The feud between Kourtney Kardashian, 39, and her sisters raged on, but things took a turn on the Aug. 26 episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. The sisters and Kris Jenner fight over whether or not Scott Disick, 35, should come to Kris Jenner’s Christmas Eve party. He’s Kourtney’s ex, but he also happens to be the father of their three children and is friends with Kris, Kim Kardashian, 37, and Khloe Kardashian, 34. Kris really wants him to come to the party. She thinks it would be not be fair to not invite after he has been a part of the family for 10 years. Kendall’s not going to let Kris get away with inviting Scott and not Caitlyn Jenner, 68. Kendall feels that just inviting Caitlyn is the right thing to do. “The same way that you feel bad for Scott not being invited you don’t feel bad for my dad not being invited…” she tells her mom. Kris tries to make an excuse by saying she has a relationship with Scott, but Kendall calls her out saying that she had a relationship with her dad for 25 years. “She shouldn’t have to invite anyone she doesn’t want to spend her time with,” Kim says to her sisters. 70 SEPTEMBER, 2018 - TULIP
Game of Throne Season: 8 first footage revealed
Winter is coming, and Game of Thrones season 8 is as well. The first look at the highly-anticipated final season aired in an HBO sizzle reel on Aug. 26. The scenes are brief, but they’re more than enough to hold us over until a full-length trailer. Starting at the 1:10 mark of the trailer, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is seen giving Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) a hug. While you might think this is just their reunion from season 6, the scenes are definitely not the same. The words “final season” are also featured during this season 8 glimpse. At the end of season 7, Jon Snow was headed back north to Winterfell, where Sansa is in charge, with Daenerys (Emilia Clarke). The final season Game of Thrones, which will only be 6 episodes, will premiere in 2019. It’s just a matter of when. HBO president Casey Bloys said at the Television Critics Association’s press tour that season 8 would air in the “first half” of 2019. This means the first 6 months of 2019, so it could be January or June. However, if the show wants to be eligible for 2019 Emmys, then it needs to air before May 31, 2019. The wait is going to be long, but the final season is going to be so worth it!
Ram Charan’s present to Pawan Kalyan
Mega fans expected the first look of Ram Charan from his new film under direction of Boyapati Srinu for the 63rd birthday of Megastar Chiranjeevi. But, Charan who is the producer of Chiru’s next film has only highlighted ‘Sye Raa’ by releasing its first teaser. Mega Powerstar clearly did not want to gain the limelight for his next film on his father’s birthday. But, fans of Mega family are little disappointed to miss the first look of Charan, who brought out the teaser of Sye Raa which has ample time to hit the screens. So, fans are now looking forward to the first look of Ram Charan on Babai Pawan Kalyan’s birthday - Sept 2nd. Now that Kalyan has moved on to politics, and he has got no filmy updates to bring up on this birthday, fans want Ram Charan to fill that void and use that occasion to unveil the first look of his new movie with Boyapati Srinu. Given the fact that Charan is doing this film after massive successes like Dhruva and Rangasthalam, the expectations on this film are certainly sky-high. Since it is a Boyapati-directorial, everyone is assuming it to be a highoctane action entertainer. However, the release of first look would set the expectations right among the fans. It now remains to be seen whether Mega Powerstar will release the first look of his upcoming film on Pawan Kalyan’s birthday or will he choose any other day for that!
ENTERTAINMENT Hit or Flop, Sunil Is Still On Top
The Telugu Film Industry never fell short of comedians until recent times. Of all the comedians Tollywood has witnessed, Sunil has a special place in the hearts of Telugu people. He started off with small comic roles and ultimately reached pinnacles as a star comedian. Here is the interesting snippet about his re-entry as the comedian. Things turned in an erratic way when Sunil tried his luck as a solo hero. Except for a very few movies, none really worked at the box office. Despite doing a good number of movies, he didn’t make it to the big league in Tollywood. But after some dillydallying he finally decided to get back to his usual strength of comedy. Already Sunil is doing an important role in his close friend and well-wisher Trivikram’s movie “Aravindha Sametha Veera Raghava” starring Junior NTR. Besides, he’s appearing in”Silly Fellows” alongside Allari Naresh. During his days as a solo hero, Sunil charged crores as remuneration and now he is charging remuneration in lakhs per day as a comedy actor. Reports have that Sunil is charging a whopping amount of 3.5 lakhs per day, which is pretty high. He is charging more than present top comedians like Vennala Kishore and Sreenivas Reddy, who are quoting nearly 2 lakhs per day. Looks like producers are ready to pay such a high amount to Sunil regardless of whether he’s hit or flop as a hero.
ld medal match PV Sindhu storms into go PV Sindhu stormed into the final of the women’s singles event at the 18th Asian Games after beating Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in Jakarta. The Rio Olympics silver medallist beat Yamaguchi for a third straight time in a gritty contest where Sindhu won 21-17, 15-21, 21-10. With the win, Sindhu has become the first Indian to reach the final of Asian Games in either singles or doubles. Sindhu started sluggishly, making numerous unforced errors but recovered quickly to take control of the match. Despite Yamaguchi’s energetic game, Sindhu stood tall to weather the attack. Sindhu remained solid at the net, using a variety of strokes to force the Japanese player into errors. A long rally ensued at 20-17 but Yamaguchi sent her smash wide to put the Indian ahead. Sindhu’s error count increased considerably in the second game while Yamaguchi also got her share of the luck of the net at crucial junctures. From a four point lead at one stage, Yamaguchi turned things around dramatically. Fittingly, an error marked the end of the second game.
Muhammed Anas claims quick silver for India
In his early years as an athlete, Muhammed Anas Yahiya was a long jumper. His long-time coach PB Jaikumar recalls his personal best to be 7.45 metres. However, Jaikumar felt that Anas’ future was on the track because he had power and speed, and it didn’t take too long to convince the young athlete to make the switch. “He had speed and power and seemed ideal for the 200 and 400,” Jaikumar said on Sunday minutes after Anas won a silver in the men’s 400m at the Asian Games. A dozen Indian men have won medals in the 400 metres at the Asian Games, including the peerless Milkha Singh — two gold medals, in 1958 and 1962. So when Anas and his army teammate Arokia Rajiv stepped on the track for the men’s 400m final, they would have felt the weight of expectations of illustrious quarter-milers who came before them. But four years older now at 27, Rajiv had been feeling the heat from the younger challenger Anas, three years his junior. Last year at the Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, Anas had pipped Rajiv to gold, a race which signified the passing of the baton. TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2018 71

MOVIES Movie Reviews
Mission Impossible: Fallout Some things age like fine wine and in the cinematic world the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise is a great example of the adage. Perhaps it has to do with the 56-year-old Tom Cruise who defies age and pushes his physical boundaries for our viewing pleasure? The answer is quite evident in ‘Fallout’ as his Ethan Hunt is as good as a caped superhero in the sixth film of the series. The story isn’t all that new with its twists and turns. But ‘Fallout’ manages to build on the previous films in the series by bringing back old friends and foes, besides adding some new ones. Henry Cavill as August Walker fits right into this universe as the hammer to the scalpel that is Ethan Hunt. His presence is looming enough to fill the entire screen whenever he appears. Simon Pegg takes on the status of a series regular alongside Ving Rhames, whose Benji and Luther respectively play more than just mere sidekicks as they add comic levity and heart. Alec Baldwin and Angela Bassett also make a mark in their brief appearances but watch out for impactful turns by Rebecca Ferguson and Michelle Monaghan along the way.
Gold There’s no greater pride in sport than to see your country’s flag being hoisted on an international stage. That sentiment gets amplified, when the setup is at the 1948 Olympics in London, where the Indian hockey team had to prove that their dominance in the sport from 1936 to 1948, wasn’t by mere chance. And what makes this sentiment stronger and the win historic, is the fact that the game was played just a year after India became a free country. ‘Gold’ recreates the journey of this spirited and lesser-known team that upstaged the British at the 1948 Olympics and made a statement against the English subjugation of 200 years. The film begins in 1936, when India made big impact in world hockey and won its third consecutive gold at the Berlin Olympics. This team was called British India team and was managed by the British Raj. One wily and determined Bengali junior manager of the British India team, took on the audacious task to form a new team for free India to participate at the 1948 Olympics in London. His dream was to see the Indian flag furling high on British soil, which would be a moment of pride for every Indian.
Geetha Govindam We are introduced to Vijay Govind (Vijay Deverakonda), a college lecturer, who dreams of getting married and settling down with a woman. He’s a typical youngster who likes to drink and goof around with his buddies but the only thing on his mind is marriage. While on his quest to find a girl, he runs into Geetha (Rashmika Mandanna). He likes her immediately, but she remains cold and distant as they go on a bus journey together. As soon as she starts warming up to him, he makes a big mistake, that not only derails his entire love story but could also potentially impact his relationship with his father (Naga Babu) and soon to be brother-in-law (Subba Raju). Geetha is convinced that Vijay is a compulsive flirt and an irresponsible youngster, while he calls her ‘Madam’ and keeps insisting that he’s a sincere guy. Whenever he comes close to convincing her, something or the other goes wrong. They continue in this vein to the point that it gets repetitive, but the way the actors pull it off makes it worthwhile. The dialogues work and the humour is excellent, keeping you hooked in just when you begin to lose interest. Gopi Sundar is in top form and the music stays with you right through, enhancing your viewing experience (especially the song Inkem Inkem Inkem Kavaale).

BOOKS Our House by Louis Candlish
In Our House, Fiona Lawson returns home from a long weekend, only to discover movers unloading a van full of another family’s belongings into her tiny Trinity Avenue home. Stranger still, her belongings and those of her two sons have vanished, and this new family insists they own the house, although Fiona never put it on the market. From this unsettling scenario, British author Louise Candlish proceeds to masterfully spool out the complicated series of events that led Fiona and Bram, her estranged husband with whom she shares the home in a “bird’s nest” co-parenting arrangement, to reach this shocking moment. Candlish tells a large part of the story through a podcast called “The Victim,” which Fiona narrates, and through a Word document written by Bram, both in retrospect. The podcast and Word document give the reader the opportunity to hear Fiona’s and Bram’s differing perceptions of the events as they unfold. This narrative structure also allows the reader to feel the full weight of the characters’ emotions, from Fiona’s initial utter perplexity to Bram’s almost fatalistic resignation, and to discover the deep-rooted origins of their relationship’s complexities. Allowing the reader to plumb these depths gives the plot real plausibility. What seems outlandishly far-fetched at first slowly becomes uncomfortably conceivable and makes this novel nearly impossible to put aside.
We Regret to Inform You
by Ariel Kaplan Ariel Kaplan’s ‘We Regret to Inform You’ is a compelling novel about every highly motivated college applicant’s worst nightmare. High school senior Mischa Abramavicius should have had it made. She goes to a tiny prep school on scholarship where she’s a star student. But when college acceptances start rolling in and her classmates are accepted to places like Harvard and Princeton, Mischa gets nothing but rejections. She doesn’t even get into her safety school, Paul Revere University. Shocked and ashamed to tell her single mother, Mischa visits Revere’s admissions office and discovers that her transcript has been altered. But her original transcript is in order, leading Mischa to realize that something fishy is going on. With help from her best friend, Nate, and a group of hacker girls who call themselves the Ophelia Syndicate, Mischa begins to dig deeper. As unlikely as this all sounds, Kaplan makes everything seem believable with the help of her wisecracking yet thoughtful narrator. Without any college acceptances, Mischa begins to question her very identity. But as she gets to the bottom of her application disaster, she also re-examines her dreams, goals and all-consuming pursuit of success. We Regret to Inform You is an entertaining look at the college admissions rat race that includes crime, a cover-up and plenty of heart and soul.
Ohio
by Stephenie Harrison From its opening pages, in which an empty casket is paraded through the streets of a small town in Ohio so that its townspeople may pay tribute to one of their golden boys who has died fighting overseas, debut novelist Stephen Markley makes his intentions clear: Ohio is a eulogy to middle America and its flyover states. It is a battle cry for the forgotten pockets of the country and the tired, poor and dispossessed whose voices we do not care to hear. Bookended by death and spanning nearly 500 pages, Ohio interweaves the stories of four former classmates, all of whom have left New Canaan, Ohio, only to return home on the same fateful night. We meet Bill Ashcroft, an outspoken activist who has come to deliver a dubious package that is strapped to the underside of his truck; Stacey Moore, a grad student whose love life has plagued her since her school days, who has returned to make peace with the mother of an old flame; Dan Eaton, a historyloving bookworm-turned-veteran who lost his eye in the war and is back for dinner with his high school sweetheart; and Tina Ross, former town beauty who now lives one town over, works at Walmart and needs to get over her football star ex-boyfriend once and for all. Each character returns haunted by the ghosts of New Canaan’s past, unaware of how their past and present actions will converge with destructive and terrifying consequences.

TAROT
ARIES March 21 - April 19
As the month begins the Moon is passing through fiery Aries. This gives you lots of energy to start new things and express yourself creatively. The bad news is that Mercury has stationed (appears to have stopped moving) in your house of creativity, temporarily frustrating the flow of that energy. While this won’t last very long at all, it will give you a perspective on how you sometimes use your emotions. This is a great time to learn more about surrender and to synchronize with the timing of the Universe. This will be a very important lesson at mid-month when Sun and Mars (two powerful planets for Aries) conjoin in your sixth house of ambition and life direction. In advance of this period take the time to feel passionately about what you’d like to manifest in your life.
TAURUS April 20 - May 20
Forecast For SEPTEMBER 2018
CANCER June 21 - July 22
Saturn’s “Who am I?” transit of your Sun sign gets an energetic, creative bounce from the Sun, Mars and Jupiter moving through your third house of mind, communication and business. Your mind is fertile and active and can help you out of a creative rut. The enlightenments or attitude adjustments near the 9th can be turned into action in the second half of the month. September offers great opportunities to make new friends, promote yourself, advertise your business or create an internet presence.
Venus is the ruler of your Sun sign and therefore a powerful planet for you this month. As the month begins she is located alongside Saturn in your third house. This will be an important time for third house matters particularly communication, writing and business. Saturn’s placement here allows us to look at motivation in these areas. What would you like to communicate or accomplish? Where do you hold back in these areas and how can you change that? Venus will enter your fourth house of home and nurturing on the 7th and remain there until October 4th. Use this period for home improvement and getting closer with the family. Give special attention to the children. The energies of romance and creativity are in the air.
GEMINI May 21 - June 20
Emphasis this month is on fourth house affairs: home, family and your emotional self. Things may feel just a bit overwhelming in the first half of the month. Challenges appear on the 9th as karma revealing Pluto in your house of relationship squares Mars in the fourth house. The Sun and Mars conjunct in your fourth house on the 14th providing an opportunity for breakthrough or meltdown. This is a time to nurture yourself, sort out relationship needs sensitively and be with the family. There may be deeper, nagging questions about career and life direction that are at the heart of your frustration. What do you need in this regard? It’s time to be really honest with yourself so you can achieve the fulfilment you deserve.
VIRGO August 23 - September 22
Happy Birthday! What a powerful month astrologically! The planets that rule the three fire signs are all transiting through Virgo near your natal Sun. Also, Mercury, the ruler of Virgo, enters your sign on the 10th. Finally, a New Moon, auspicious for new beginnings, takes place on the 14th, conjunct benevolent, expansive Jupiter. This will be a good test for you. You are burning with inspiration, ambition and likely yearning for a January 20 - February 18 new sense of direction. It’s time to re-balance that rational, Saturn’s transit of your sixth house has you focusing a lot these days on your goals analytical part of you with your feeling, heart and passion and life direction. Even though the last few weeks have made things as clear as mud, for life. It simply won’t suffice to plan things out in your don’t sweat it. The transformative power of the Sun, Mars and Jupiter in your eighth usual methodical manner. You are going to have to feel house of change may be very revealing. The 14th and 15th will crystallize many things this energy of possibility palpably with your body. It is a for you. Consider pending possibilities carefully. If you are the overly idealistic ivory resonance, a frequency of vibration, which you have to tower type of Aquarius, it is time to get your heart and feelings nurse, nurture and grow. Feel the power of your passion out of cold storage! You are a great catalytic agent for change and for life. Your passion represents your sense of Knowing and reforms so don’t keep it to yourself. Synergy is the secret to being Truth about who you are and why you are here. The ‘plan’ a happy Water Bearer. Give the healing waters of the gods away you are always needing will reveal itself. Trust yourself and to whomever will receive from you and you will be always happy. the Universe. Being in control is vastly overrated. Jupiter The 24th and 25th are green light days for you to take action. leaves Virgo on the 24th and won’t return until 2015 so seize the day!

PISCES February 19 - March 20
Venus and Saturn, Libra’s two biggest planetary allies, begin the month conjunct one another in your house of career, status and responsibility. This suggests that the energies of change in these areas – energies set in motion last February and March – are moving toward resolution in the next six to eight weeks. Use this time to ‘lighten up’ with your sense of over-responsibility. If you can’t love your work, then try to work with love. Take the pressure off of yourself wherever you can. Do things around the home to make you feel more cozy and special. Your perceptions of yourself and what you value are changing. Enjoy the ride. Finances can show improvement at the end of the month just in time to buy yourself the birthday present you really deserve.
The Moon in fiery Aries provides motivation at the beginning of the month and pulls us out of the disorienting effects of Mercury, Chiron, Uranus and Neptune retrograde. A lot of energy can be focused on relationship opportunity. That can mean a chance for romance for those who are actively seeking. For others it signifies focusing on existing relationships and what they are telling you. Don’t overlook the lessons here. You would do well to be more honest about what you need and your vision for the two of you. Your thoughts would be welcomed. Opportunities for creative expression are at a peak this month. Let your creative talents fly. There is also a great deal of inspiration to be gained from ninth house affairs, travel or higher teachings. Visit your teacher, take a workshop or read a book that will help you to shift your perception.
You feel creatively fertile, ready to give birth to some new talent or aspect of who you are. This is a good time for precisely that as doors are opening in your job or your career field. Don’t let your anxiousness get the best of you early in the month. Pay close attention to family and home needs so that they receive appropriate and conscious attention. Finances should be doing well but avoid increasing your debt load without due consideration. Better to save up for bigger and better things ahead.
You may find the first days of September a bit like slogging through mud that’s up to your hips. Pluto, the ruler of Scorpio, and Mercury has just switched from retrograde to direct motion. Use the first week in September to inventory and integrate Pluto’s second house lessons (talents, self-esteem and what you value) which came in during the April to August period of retrogradation. By the 11th your focus will have shifted to eleventh house affairs where Sun, Mars, Mercury and Jupiter will be congregating. The eleventh house is the house of friends, networking, promoting oneself, one’s ideal, long-term goals and money generated from career. There is lots of energy available so pay particular attention to these areas of your life. Get a good grasp on your idealism and expectations so you don’t torpedo the potentially powerful results. You simply cannot change other people. Change the lens through which you view them by adjusting your beliefs about yourself. There is a big ‘ah ha’ to be found in reading or studying higher teachings that you are drawn to.
Your usual optimism may be a bit challenged when the month begins as Chiron, Neptune and Uranus – all retrograde – are lined up in your second, third and fourth houses which represent your fundamental values, thoughts, beliefs and feelings. There are some deep issues percolating which require your awareness. Your inspiration and motivation will be piqued soon enough, however. On the 14th there is a New Moon taking place conjunct transiting Jupiter who is the powerful ruler of your Sun sign. On the 15th Sun and Mars are conjunct. These two potent events both take place in your tenth house of career, status and responsibility. The portal is open if you would like to do some healing or service-related work. This is the time for you to dream things as they could be and say ‘Why not?’
Saturn transits through the later degrees of your house of creative self-expression. Your creative energies are looking for just the right avenue for expression. Don’t rush the process; take your time to find what feels right for you. Saturn tells you to go within and find the muse or motivation that suits the new you. Transiting Sun, Mars and Jupiter oppose your natal Sun making relationships fertile ground for challenges, especially mid-month. There are likely some matters that have been left hanging that require discussion. Clarify with your partner what works for you and what does not and what is negotiable. You have let the ball be in ‘their’ court long enough this lifetime. If you feel in a rut socially, some new, stimulating, supportive friendships may be in order. You are flexing your spiritual muscles now. Have faith in yourself. TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2018 79
