Dr.Harsha Vardhan Reddy
Harshvardhan Reddy is one of those people who refuses to tied be down by cliched labels, “I strongly believe one has to be multifaceted to be successful in today’s world. I work as a doctor in Gandhi Hospital and also as the Managing Director for KLCC Conventions in Shamshabad, I’m also an automobile enthusiast who is just mad about cars. Even though a hospital, a convention centre and cars don’t sound right in the same sentence, my passion for these things helps me balance these completely different aspects of my life”, he explains. Do you love cars/bikes? Love is an understatement I am MAD about automobiles. Cars have always been my passion, the speed gives you an adrenaline rush which nothing else can replicate. I live and breathe cars, but never been much of a bike guy though. Which car do you own right now? I own a 2017 Audi TT Quattro mk3, I am totally in love with this car, I use it as my daily drive. I’ve covered around 12,000km in just over 5 months so this isn’t some garage queen which sees no action. Which is your dream car? My dream car...this is a tough question, I’d love to own a mint Lamborghini Murcielago SV. That insane V12 is to die for! But the dream would definitely be a Ferrari F40. What is the first car you ever drove? The first car I ever drove was probably my fathers old 2003 Hyundai
Accent CRDI that car was bonkers for me! First car to take CRDI tech to masses back then. Talk a little about your present car? My Audi TT was a gift from my dad after I graduated medical school and became a doctor. This is a very special car for me as it signifies my transition into a more responsible adult life. This little car is the perfect coupe for India, practical as well as fast. It not only has very decent ground clearance to deal with our bad roads but also has Quattro all wheel drive to provide loads of grip for corners. Even though this car has this extensive list of safety features it is anything but slow and boring, does 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds and a top speed over 250km/h which is more than enough for our roads. It actually has pretty decent fuel efficiency for the performance on tap which is an added bonus. It’s a magnificent car which I’ll cherish for the next few years and hopefully upgrade to one of its bigger faster cousins.

Keerthi Reddy One Roze
Oneroze was born with the idea of elevating the experience of gifting in India. Flowers have always been close to my heart and seeing the dearth in floral presentations, quality and range is what motivated me with the idea of it. It was established on February 13th, 2016 with a successful launch in Hyderabad. We have launched our first store in Banjara hills, Hyderabad & our second store has now come up in UB City Bengaluru. We have been restoring the significance of giving flowers since then. We at Oneroze take immense pride and care in not just bringing exotic flowers but also in packaging them in sophistication We also carry a range of luxury gift hampers. Our website provides services across the country to other major cities.
together their gift and keeping that in mind we have introduced flower bar, where guests can work on their specific flower type and colour combination with our florists. This has been a favourite with our clients. Our future goals are to expand pan India, across various cities, making Oneroze a luxury floral chain.
USP: Oneroze introduced to India the world’s longest lasting roses, which last up to 1 year plus. Also, our florists are trained to artistically put together wide range of flowers and colours in beautiful packaging designed by ace designers like Archana Rao, Shiva Kumar and others. We retail not just flowers but also luxury hampers and custom gift sets. Our artisan florists continuously work on bespoke floral designs.

Putting together the flowers in their best with our packaging makes the presentation interesting and new every time. Apart from that, we keep launching new products for every occasion like Mother’s Day, Valentine’s day, Diwali, Christmas and New years.
Inspiration & Strength: I have always looked up to businessmen for their strengths, ability and courage to withstand different and difficult markets. My Father who has been running a construction firm “Keerthi Estates” for the last 30 years has been my source of inspiration. My husband Alok Reddy has been my biggest strength in bringing my idea to reality. I look up to people from various walks of life for their entrepreneurial spirit in bringing to life fresh concepts and ideas to market.
Difficulties: I would rather say that selling a new product and creating your own market is quite challenging. Likewise we haven’t had any difficulties as people love Oneroze.

September Shoes Design and shoes have been my passion since I was a little girl. It was in my sophomore year at college that I decided to follow my dream. I believe, comfort is something that no one should have to compromise on, especially when it comes to fashion and that is exactly what ‘September Shoes’ translates into every pair of footwear that we make. USP: At September, we make sure that our designs are on par with the latest trends, while being super comfortable. We also customise shoes as per the requirements and specifications of the customers. I think that this blend of comfort, fashion and customisation is what sets my work apart from the others in the same field. 5 years from now: I see this business grow in terms of making more customised shoes for clients and spreading the idea and availability of such a service that can make your imagination come alive. Getting shoes customised as per the requirements and needs of the customer. What’s the favourite part of your work? To choose one part of my work would be difficult. I absolutely enjoy every aspect of the business- right from research, designing the shoes, making sure they’re made the right way, promoting them and selling them, showcasing my designs at exhibitions to creating custom designs for my customers, I enjoy every aspect of my work. What change did your craft bring in your personality? It has made me a lot more patient personally and it has helped me tackle difficult situations in a more peaceful and calm manner. How do you keep the creative element alive? When you have that undying interest and passion for the work you do, you are constantly surrounded by creative ideas to implement to your work. I think apart from the passion I have towards my work, constantly staying updated with the latest trends and fashion research helps me keep my creative element alive. What difficulties did you face during your pursuit? When I decided to pursue my dream, I was repeatedly told that this industry was not meant for women. Sakina Fida Ali & Rashida Fida Ali Pretty Gilded Design
Sakina: While I always knew I wanted to venture into the creative field, I just couldn’t place a finger on exactly what it was. I finished architecture and decided it was definitely not something I wanted to do for the rest of my life! I couldn’t bear to sit at a desk in front of a computer and do a typical 9-5 job. I found the idea of that extremely depressing. I was scheduled to get married in December’15 and I had started planning and prepping for it. I’ve always loved stationery and paper everything, so my invites were very important to me. Some people won’t attend your wedding, won’t see your decor, your outfit or your makeup, but they will receive your invite. It’s the first look into your special day. I realized there wasn’t much out there that appealed to my taste and I was not impressed. That’s when I thought, “I think I can do this better!” and that’s how Pretty Gilded came to be! A few months later, I realized I needed help and asked Rashida (who was always the artsy one) to join. The rest, as they say, is history! Rashida: I had the imagination of an artist from a very young age, which I expressed a lot in my paintings and photography. I like to believe I’m the kind of person that colours outside the lines, not bounded by other people’s expectations of me. That imagination is the driving force behind the designs we curate. I also volunteer at a local government school on Saturdays to teach English & computers and it’s an extremely rewarding experience. In the midst of our busy schedules, their bright eyes and innocent welcoming smiles remind you what’s really important in life. Besides working and volunteering, I enjoy food, travel, adventure and all things vintage. I try to take time out to go for a run every evening; it clears my head and helps me focus.
our marketing, finance and is our in house webmaster! (She’s the jack of all trades!) I handle our social media, product shoots/photography and the content. What is the best part of working together? One of the greatest upsides is being brought up with the same set of principles. This is really crucial to running a business together, because you’re always on the same page when it comes to making major decisions. As sisters, we also tend to be extremely forgiving of each other’s flaws. Plus when you’re at a point when you’re going to beat each other up, you always have the parents stepping in! Services you offer: Graphic and print design studio. From complete wedding stationery like Save The Dates, invites, hotel itinerary cards, gift bags, favour boxes etc. to stunning Diwali and New Year packaging and stationery options. From corporate stationery to complete branding and packaging solutions. Get in Touch: www.prettygilded.com
Journey so far: The journey so far has exceeded our expectations in absolutely all aspects! What first started out as an idea back in April 2015, something that even our parents didn’t really pay too much attention or interest to, today we’re amongst the top 10 wedding invitation studios in the country! But most importantly, this journey has taught us so much. We started out with not too much knowledge about the print industry but along the way, we’ve learned a great deal about production, marketing, client management and basically how to run a business. We’re also extremely hands-on with the entire process from design and production to marketing and photography. We’ve learnt that the only way to maintain quality is to be involved in every aspect yourselves. It also helps that we absolutely love what we do, and it gives us so much joy! What inspires you? We believe inspiration can be found all around you, depends on how you’re viewing the world. Sunlight reflecting off glass panes, the patterns raindrops leave behind, the changing shades of the ocean, the pop of colour after a light drizzle- the tiny, mundane details of everyday life can be inspiring, if only we paid enough attention. Art or Marketing, who does what? Rashida: To be honest, we’re actually both involved with everything! However, since Sakina now has a baby, I monitor a large part of the production, i.e print and post press processes. Sakina handles most of

It’s one thing to attend an art school and completely different to help people prepare for it.” In the past, every new step I took involved entering into a new dimension of things. From primary school to now, I have stepped away from my home district, my city and finally my home country. I believe in the idea of travelling into the future, exploring what it holds for me. I have changed my residence from time to time not to traverse the monuments that a city holds but to meet new people and learn new things new cultures to keep broadening my perspective of the world. As the saying goes, “Nothing worth having comes easy”, I stand by the fact that even though I encounter many challenges on this path that I’ve chosen, I enjoy taking the risks. They bring out the best in me and keep me longing for more. I have shaped my career in the fields of graphic design, typography and photography. I provide highly personalized and tailor made consulting services at my studio AditiJhunjhunwala Consultancy in Kolkata. I wanted the younger generation to develop their digital design skills, and this passion, gave birth to my consultancy. The consultancy aims in fulfilling your zest and enthusiasm as a designer, as I had for this subject. I completed my under-graduation in design communication from Lasalle College of The Arts, Singapore, with a specialization in graphic design from Central Saint Martins, London, animation from Film Oxford Digital Media, Oxfordshire, England, and a course on modernist jewellery from Christies, London.
My consulting work can be broken down into Portfolio Development and Software Education. Primarily targeted at students interested in applying for design courses in Singapore, UK, USA, India and other countries, I play the role of a consultant and help students to construct a professional design portfolio that can be used when applying to various art and design universities the world over. The consultancy aims at identifying talent and sharing my own passion for design, I help students hone their design skills and train them to cement their software skills in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. In addition there are varioustailor-made evening classes which offer art-based activities like Tie and Dye, Zine making and Photography workshops to motivate and inspire corporate team building. Biggest influence on your approach to teaching? Lack of formal training as a teacher combined with overall life experience. Spending a large part of my growing up years in Singapore primarily gave me a somewhat of an experimental and open-minded approach to design and life. What is the favorite part of your work? Leaving a lasting legacy by giving my students the tools to live happy and productive lives. Also, there is nothing more inspiring and satisfying than seeing and being part of my student’s progress. Where do you find inspiration? Conversations. When did you fall in love with design? I fell in love with design when I could execute my ideas on paper at a young age. What advice would you give students starting out? Learn the technical skills because the ideas should come naturally. Once you have both you become a product of desire for design directors. What is your take in the area of your expertise? Be open, explore and love what you do!I believe that the most important thing is to develop your own unique style so that it will be able to offer something different and innovative. Are you creatively satisfied? Yes! Each student is a challenge for me. The students are an endless source of creativity; their ideas are inspiring and the creative challenges they present have led to a huge boost in my personal experimentation. Rent a desk
It all began at a home office, our own! When we quit our 9 to 5 jobs, brimming with new ideas and big plans to set up a business, the main hurdle was to find the right location for execution, namely, an office. While we hunted for a suitable space, it soon dawned upon us that the sort of place we’d want to work in was out of our budget. Unwilling to scoop out from the budget allocated to business development, the only option was to set up an office at home. However, over time, faced with glaring short comings of working from home, the lack of formal space, the constant disturbances of domestic life, and the eventual realization that a large number of young entrepreneurs and freelancers face similar issues, we decided to build a co working space in Hyderabad which is swanky yet affordable. What makes it different from working from an office? We, at Rent A Desk, believe in the advantages of co working. The constant networking, the cross-pollination of ideas and the serendipity of chance exchanges will only drive your business forward. Rent A Desk come with: Lockers, Electricity, Internet, Housekeeping, Refreshments like Coffee Tea and Water. What’s the favourite part of your work? Being able to be there in the market and provide a space to our customers, especially to those who have just started off and are at stage where they are growing and help them grow by providing a space which is flexible and also by helping them network. What’s Next: We are finalizing a few properties in Pune and Bangalore and should be operational in 2018 Creative element: Wherever we travel or meet people we try and see what can be the best way to keep our customers happy with whatever limited resources and space we have. We also collaborate with likeminded people to understand the day to day requirements. What difficulties did you face during your pursuit? We at Rent A Desk have a habit of building everything at our premises. That sometimes can be very challenging as there is a scarcity of finding good manual labour in the market. Price range and locations: We are currently available at 3 locations across Hyderabad City and would be expanding to Gachibowli shortly. Mamatha Mallipudi Tell us about the importance of Social Media in today’s world? Social media is all around us and everyone is addicted to their phones or laptops hence the influence of social media is immense. For most of us, the first thing we do when we wake up in the morning is check our Facebook/Instagram/ Twitter/Snapchat and so on! One tweet from a celebrity or a social media influencer can make or break a product or create a scandal. So, it’s the social media circus which is running the world! When you review a place and if you aren’t pleased with its taste or service, are you frank or diplomatic? When we are invited to a restaurant or hotel, it is with a view to give constructive and objective feedback to the management and chefs to improve or maintain the levels of food quality and service so I give an honest opinion in a polite way. Bloggers shouldn’t forget the amount of work which is put in by the kitchen and service staff so if something goes wrong, it is upsetting for them too. Giving more pointers on how to make things better is more effective than being overly critical. Do you think being truthful about your views on social media can land a person in trouble? I think it all depends on how you say what you feel. You can put across your truthful point of view without offending people if you just stop for a minute before you express yourself instead of blurting things out. We’ve all seen the kind of trouble people get into by posting controversial tweets as people seem to find everything offensive now a days!
healthy yet very tasty dishes along with regular dishes. Haiku is my new favourite in the Pan-Asian field with its delicious Japanese and Thai dishes. Vishal Fernandes Tell us about the importance of social media in today’s world? I think the world would have been a much slower place without social media. It has definitely changed the way we interact with each other. One could easily catch up with friends through their statuses, photos and videos and also for businesses it works as a great networking tool. When you review a place and if you aren’t pleased with its taste or service, are you frank or diplomatic? I have always associated with the philosophy “Praise in public, criticize in private”. Many times I have been vocal about giving feedback in
How do you handle the competition in Hyderabad with so many food bloggers around? I think healthy competition is a good thing because that keeps you on your toes and keeps pushing yourself to higher standards of work. There’s room for everyone as everybody has a different style and niche when it comes to blogging. What make you different from the rest? Being a hotel management graduate and also being an ex-restaurateur has helped me a lot when it comes to imparting my culinary knowledge in my writing. You don’t need to have a culinary background to be a food blogger but sometimes it does give you that slight edge! I write quite in depth when it comes to describing a particular dish and how it is made and that seems to appeal to my readers. How did your journey of a foodie begin? I’ve always loved food be it the culinary history of a dish or how it is created and my parents loved to travel so my family experienced cuisine from all over the world. My passion for food translated itself into studying hotel management and expanding my culinary horizons culminating into co-owning my own restaurant which is every foodie’s dream! Food blogging is a natural progression for me as I’m now sharing my passion with other food lovers through my writing. Do you think the trend of blogging or social media shall soon disappear? I don’t think either will disappear, in fact blogging may become more specific and niche based as the number of bloggers keeps increasing. New social media platforms will keep on popping up and keeping people engaged in the virtual world. What is your favourite new and also classic restaurant? New restaurants keep opening up every week in Hyderabad so favourites keep changing but right now Ciclo Cafe has impressed me with its creative menu. I like the way the menu has incorporated 34 SEPTEMBER, 2017 - TULIP
private instead of negative complaining over social media, as a result the restaurants do rectify the issues to make it a happy experience not just for me but also for their future clientele. Do you think being truthful about your views on social media can land a person in trouble? Not really, as long as the views aren’t misleading and damaging. How do you handle the competition in Hyderabad with so many food bloggers around? Being one of the earliest food bloggers in the city, I often get asked about this. Over the past few years, I have seen a tsunami of food bloggers evolve but quite honestly that doesn’t affect me at all. I view competition as the impetus for innovation and fuel to do things differently and better. What makes you different from the rest? I believe one should taste a culture to understand it and therefore I travel – not occasionally, but every month. I travel to explore and understand the origins of the recipes of a world gone by and to experience a world beyond citing ingredients to a recipe. These are stories you’d find on my
social media pages and I believe this is what makes me different from the rest. How did your journey as a foodie begin? I grew up in a family where conversations invariably revolved around food and what our next meal would be. My father happened to be an hotelier, which gave me an opportunity to eat at many places and taste various cuisines. That was the start of my journey of being a foodie. Infact, even during my school and college – my gang of friends and I would make a concentrated effort to go off the beaten path and look for hidden joints. Do you think the trend of blogging or social media shall soon disappear? Absolutely not! Whether one likes it or hates it the trend of blogging or social media is here to stay. What is your favourite new and classic restaurant? There are so many favourite restaurants and it’s nearly impossible to narrow them down to just a few. genuine. It is very important to provide feedback to the restaurants with regards to food, service or ambiance. It’s only then that they get to learn and grow in this vast competitive market. Imagine you visiting your favourite restaurant and being disappointed with the dish you ordered. In such scenarios, it is essential to let the management know the flaws in the dish so that they can work on it and you would be a happy customer on your next visit. It is a win-win situation for both. Do you think being truthful about your views on social media can land a person in trouble? As the name, social media is used as a medium to socialize with people. So, if you want to socialize your personal view to other people then I would say “Yes”, just go on.” For many teens of this day and age, visiting these sites are a part of their daily routine. Sure, it’s a good way to keep in contact with your friends and peers, but can it be too much of a good thing? In my opinion, social networking sites are beneficial if used in certain ways, but can also be detrimental if used in the wrong way. How do you handle the competition in Hyderabad with so many food bloggers around? It’s a fast pace industry. Competition will always be there. I have never believed in competition in food world in Hyderabad. If someone is doing a better job than me, i always appreciate their hard work. It is very important to respect the people and the massive amount of actions they put in to conclude a session or a food event. I believe in competing with your own self, set a standard for others so that they look up to you. Spread knowledge and be inspirational. What makes you different from the rest? I’m a big foodie by heart, admin of a foodie group on Facebook, food photographer, owner of Hyderabad Food Diaries on instagram, food session organiser and a food influencer. I guess this makes me different from the rest. There is a lot on my plate. One has to be passionate and dedicate time for this industry. My background and experience in hotel management are different from most people in the field, and that gives me a unique perspective and the ability to see solutions that are more creative and resourceful and it has always worked out beautifully.
Mohd Zubair Ali Tell us about the importance of social media in today’s world? Social networking isn’t for everyone. However, it’s now such a massive part of all our lives, whether we embrace or reject the notion it can no longer be ignored. It has never been easier to make friends than it is right now. And that’s mainly thanks to social networking sites. Just a few decades ago it was pretty tough to connect with people, unless you were the overly outgoing type able to make conversation with anyone at a party. Social networks have the power to open the world up to you, making it a smaller place than it has ever been before. So much so that I actually haven’t a clue where many of my contacts reside. When it comes to social networks everyone is equal, regardless of location. When you review a place and if you aren’t pleased with its taste or service, are you very critical or diplomatic? Being in the F&B industry for so long, one thing i have learned is being
How your journey of a foodie did begin? It’s been a tremendous journey of 7 yrs. I have literally seen Hyderabad’s F&B industry evolve in front of my eyes. My love for food started when I was pursuing my graduation. I was never a food lover or a good student in college, until i visited a star hotel for outdoor catering and got an opportunity to work under an executive chef as his assistant. I was astonished to witness his culinary skills. It was then that I decided to venture out in the open to explore more and more food. I have been reviewing and exploring places since 2010 now. Do you think the trend of blogging or social media shall soon disappear? When I entered the food world few years back, there were probably less than ten people blogging about food. We were a fairly chummy bunch and met up for meals, swapped links, ideas, and technical tips as the medium continued to grow. It was all pretty small-scale until the whole thing blossomed into something that few likely would have predicted. Most people are blogging for fun rather than for professional reasons, and most just want to share recipes or food-related experiences. The world of blogging and social media is here to stay. I don’t see it ending or disappearing anyway soon. CAMPUS BUZZ
A parent’s guide to A school is a place where the student spends about 14 years of his life, more than anything the parent is concerned about their child’s future. We ask parents about what they look for in a school when they hand over their child to the schools! 36 SEPTEMBER, 2017 - TULIP
CAMPUS BUZZ
Sanayah is our first child and she is 14 months old. Going by the present standard of schooling, when a child is 2 and half years old, he/she is ready for schooling. So we have time on hand to decide the best school for her. A school which doesn’t believe in making kids carry heavy school bags, doing loads of home work and preparing for exams every week! Do we have such schools in today’s generation? The true version of an educational institute is a place where a child is taught to live in discipline , acquire knowledge, explore new things, discover his/her hidden talent and shape his/her future towards betterment rather than relying on complex patterns of syllabus to make a child learn and study. Today, books and pens have been replaced by laptops and tabs! 80% of school kids wear glasses because of the constant usage of ipads and laptops. Every new invention has its own pros and cons, it’s upto to us to decide what is beneficial for our children. So as parents, we are looking for a school that doesn’t encourage usage of ipads and laptops. Instead of dumping bulk syllabus on their little minds, it’s time the government chose more innovative teaching methods with minimal syllabus. This will help both children and parents to bond better over homework hours. We want Sanayah’s schooling to be both fun and informative. And our search is on!
Inayah and Rashed Khan
How future ready is the school? It is more important to know how the school is prepared for the future than its past pedigree. Most schools also talk about their credentials to prepare children for high stakes competitive examinations like the IIT-JEE and medicine or position themselves as ‘focused on holistic development’. But the truth is, no one knows what the future holds. Ask the school how they will teach your child to adapt to uncertainty and change. How skilled are the teachers? Very rarely do parents who go school hunting ask to meet the teachers of the school. This is a mistake, because these are the people who will mould your child. A short conversation can give you tremendous information on the teacher community in the school. In this age and time, good schools focus on having a good programme for their teachers, and make them learners as well. What percentage of the school week is typically spent in the classroom and what percentage in labs and sports? l Do children go on field trips or visits to local museums? Do they meet achievers in various fields?
l
Making real world connections to what children learn inside the classrooms are becoming very important. Classrooms are the most artificial of places in the real world.
How many field trips/community activities/excursions and visits are scheduled in the school year?
l
Does learning happen outside the textbooks? We live in era where a typical person is bombarded by information from a variety of sources. It would be a sad commentary on the school if learning were confined to reciting lessons from textbooks and answering questions from the lesson. How are questions from children handled? Are children engaged via hands-on activities or experiential learning methods?
l
What are the sources of information and learning like project work and hands-on activities for the child other than the textbook?
l
What is the school’s policy on punishment?
l
Talk to teachers on how they discipline their students? How do they deal with troublemakers?
l
How are children being taught about computers -- to use features of applications or to create with computers?
l
How are children assessed? Ask to look through a few textbooks. What will children learn in the different subjects?
l
How are slow learners taught to cope with the curriculum?
l
Many schools have started designing programs to ensure children see the purpose of their learning, by being exposed to the real world. What is the breakup of learning within the classroom and outside?
Does the learning slow down to suit the pace of such students and is it individualised to cater to their needs?
l
On the flip side, how does the school cater to gifted children?
l
TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2017 37
CAMPUS BUZZ Schools should be a place where the child feels secure loved and happy. A warm and a loving environment that focuses not just on academics but the joys of being in a classroom which is hygienic and safe. I personally look at a place where my child is not judged by anyone and is welcomed with open arms. School is a place where my child feels strengthened and will discover his overall development for the first time. I personally look for. - Hygienic environment. - Patient and loving teachers. - Special attention and day care. - Toned down behaviour. - Playtime and snack time by themselves. - Safe and sound environment. As a mother I want the best for my child but he is the one who has to discover and adjust him in the environment I give. Jasneet & Hitesh Thakwani
How are gifted children identified, engaged and assessed? All classrooms have 2 to 3 students who are learning at a faster pace than the rest of the class. Unless such children are engaged and their needs addressed, they display problem behaviours inside and outside class. Very few schools address gifted children and if you believe that your child is one, you should be proactive in addressing your child’s needs. Are involvements and achievements outside academics encouraged and supported? Children who participate in tournaments and competitions outside school especially children who are gifted in sports or performing arts often miss school regularly. While schools are willing to give them ‘attendance’ credit, the children are still expected to play catch-up with their peers upon their return and ace the required tests and exams. This can be demoralising for a child excelling in a sport or art that has to always play catch-up and rarely manages to. If my child takes part in activities outside school regularly, how does the school tailor academics for him/her?
l
What is the value system of the school? Many schools incorporate orphanage visits or community drives or a weekly ‘Value education’ or ‘Moral science’ class to help children imbibe a good value system. Some preparation beforehand and due diligence with the admission counsellor can go a long way in ensuring the school is the best fit for your child. Children will inhabit a world that we all know nothing about -- the best we can do is to ensure they are ready take on whatever comes their way. How values such as kindness, politeness and giving are practiced at school? l Are children encouraged to help those who need it? l Are children taught the values you as a parent, deem important? 38 SEPTEMBER, 2017 - TULIP
We basically look how good the teachers are in the school because the major part of my child’s learning will come from there and after that we see how many activities are there in the school so that my child keeps on learning various things. We are very happy to find such a good school for our kid. Daman & Tarmeen Talwar

During the course at NIFT, founder Arshia Bhargava & Avishek Mandal attended cluster classes. This basically meant working with artisans in Rajasthan and Gujarat in their villages. In combining their love for the art of this area with the need to promote not just the artisans but also their work and traditions that havebeen passed on for centuries, they decided to start their own label. “We want to create awareness about our traditional art forms. Fabrics are being machine printed using chemical dyes to expand their color and design options while trying to maintain the traditional look. In order to retain and revive this art form, we continue to manufacture our material directly with small and big artisans from both these states. Ajrakh, dabu, jahota are a form of hand-block printing that is native to both Rajasthan and Gujarat. With the combination of old traditions and techniques and new ideas and technology, we have been able to create new colors and styles while keeping the essence of the old. This textile is then used to create clothes for the working woman who wants to be stylish yet comfortable in the textile that she only knows too well. We are now also selling online at www.thesecretlabel.com and are accessible to the international customer. We are planning to launch a men’s wear line using the same traditional textiles. There are very few brands creating clothes for men that are away from the standard blues and blacks. We will have to capture that very niche market of the metrosexual man. Our inspiration comes from our travels in finding new artisans, the artisans we work with, the journey, our interactions with the people. The textiles we have chosen to work with are completely organic. This means we are working with natural dyes. This presents us with unique challenges in terms of the colors we can create using the traditional natural dyes. The designing opportunities are also limited since these art forms are centuries old and are very set in their ways. Ajrakh as a fabric was essentially representing the Khatri community of Sindh. Dabu and bagru were traditionally used only to create garments for the royal families of Rajasthan. Thus these fabrics have never been used to create anything that is used by the modern society. The challenge comes in trying to redefine the use of these traditional fabrics and making new silhouettes that suit the woman of today,” she says. Surbhi Shekhar
The idea of starting her own label wasn’t abrupt. This was a slow and steady process which started in her childhood itself. Surbhi Shekhar was always fascinated with innovative garments and she used to love draping and making clothes. “At a juncture in my teenage days, when I had to decide between my career in medicine aand fashion, I chose the latter. I joined NIFT and spent four grueling years learning nitty gritties of making clothes. I got married in 2012 and my husband helped me realise my dream of opening my own fashion label. That’s how “Surbhi Shekhar” started. The turning point came when we were selected as Lakme Fashion Week 2014 A/W gen Next along with 5 other brands. Our Gen Next collection was well received in the fashion fraternity and received appreciation from global media as well. We again showcased in LFW SS 2015 which was well received and appreciated globally. Surbhi Shekhar is a brand about free spirit and smart clothing. It’s a true combination of innovation and hard work. We work on lot of interesting surfaces (Weaving, plastic panels, fabric fur etc.). We run a zero waste factory ,using it either as surfaces or using strips and tapes of one garment in another either on surface or as lining. Like the thread fur we have used as surface this season are waste fabric strips shredded. Next destination is to become a truly global player. We plan to take our brand to international market pretty soon. Inspiration is an idea that comes to you at any point of time and doesn’t let you forget about it, It can come while watching a movie, or travelling or doing random things or even when you are not doing anything or sleeping. You won’t believe but it’s true. I make clothes even in my dreams and so many of my ideas comes in my dream as that’s when your mind is super relaxed. I wake up in the morning and try to draw sketches of my dreams”, explains Surbhi Shekhar. Email: miramadoxdesignstudio@gmail.com Facebook: @SurbhiShekharclothing Instagram: @surbhishekharlabel

Firdaus Jewels
Akshita Arora had always been attracted to stones and beads so jewellery was really the only career she ever wanted to pursue. “After studying Gemology and Jewellery designing from GIA (California) , I decided to open online shop. I was clear about my vision and was able to start working towards my dream right out of college. The response has been amazing! I was really motivated after I saw the response online in collaboration with multi designer websites. After that I just can’t stop. My aim is to bring more innovative ideas to our designs. I will be launching the website very soon. I would love to collaborate with other creative minds and keep growing. As for the future, I just hope my jewellery makes women feel special and beautiful. I find inspirations everywhere- it could be anything - a pattern, art, music, history, architecture. It took me sometime to nail down the concept and unique details of my line. Tawa Paneer for vegetarians is such an ideal option, it is tossed with onions, tomatoes, chillis and a semi dry yogurt gravy. We would put aside all the non vegetarian dishes for this one. Macchi Di Tikki as the name suggests is cooked with fish and spices. We also tasted the Tandoori Bhuni sabzi which has capsicum, cauliflowers and potatoes cooked to perfection in tandoor. If we had to choose one dish that steals my heart it would be Galouti Kebab, it melts in your mouth and gives you a burst of flavors. It is a combination of meat which is cooked slowly. To sip along we had Ganne ka Sa Ras which is flavored to give you the thirst quenching sugar cane juice mixed with ginger. Rangeela is another surprise element whose passion fruit refreshes your day. Organic food simply tastes better, most top chefs around the world realise this and choose organically grown produce to create their delicacies. Much research has been done to show that there is more mineral and vitamin content in foods grown organically as farmers replenish the top soil and do crop rotation as part of their farming practice to ensure better crops. The choices of food we make for today will determine the quality of earth for the future generations. Choosing organic helps agricultural diversity and help preserve thousands of varieties of produce that would go extinct otherwise. WESTWORLD
IMDb Rating: 9/10 Genre: Sci-Fi Based on 1973 film of the same name, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have wonderfully recreated it into a TV show. It’s based on a futuristic Westernthemed amusement park where things are not as they seem. A technologically advanced Wild West–themed amusement park, populated by android hosts. The park caters to high-paying guests, who may indulge in whatever they wish within the park. And without the fear of retaliation from the hosts.
RIVERDALE
IMDb Rating: 7.9/10 Genre: Crime Drama There are certain childhood memories that are universally shared. Remember Archie? The most popular comic series, we all grew up reading. This spin-off of Archie is bit darker and grittier and takes on the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. So, we have a brand new take on the Archie world and those beloved characters in this TV Show!

“Its a must-see if you want to see the historical madness of organized crime and the political challenges for everyone involved back in the eighties. The cast is superb.. It is interesting to see the very primitive ways in which the CIA had to monitor people. Of course today, with smart phones everywhere, satellites and the internet, cameras on many street cameras there is virtually no privacy” Mohit Tekwani Entrepreneur
VIKINGS
IMDb Rating: 8.7/10 Genre: Historical Drama While most of our generation people are stuck with Game of Thrones, this show is the next big thing. This show is inspired by the sagas of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the best-known legendary Norse heroes and notorious as the scourge of England and France. HOUSE OF CARDS
IMDb Rating: 9/10 Genre: Political Drama When it comes to TV shows, House of Cards has set incredibly high standards. From its unbelievable plot twists to the powerful dialogues, House of Cards is just a jaw-droppingly brilliant series. It is a show where every character has shades of gray. The plot follows a congressman Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) who works with his equally conniving wife to exact revenge on the people who betrayed him. Kevin Spacey’s brilliant portrayal of Frank Underwood is what makes the show stand out.

IMDb Rating: 9.5/10 Genre: Science Documentary How would you feel experiencing the world from the viewpoint of animals? Planet Earth II is David Attenborough’s fascinating documentary series on how animals survive some of the most iconic habitats on earth. From spellbinding wildlife spectacles to intimate encounters, it takes you closer to nature than ever before. It is also one of the most expensive nature documentaries ever produced.
Profound, moving, disturbing and massively important. Brilliant and devastating in equal measures. Caution, this is most definitely tough to watch, but do it. A fantastically well written and acted series. “13 Reasons Why” is a difficult, but an important, no, a necessary watch. A refreshing and unflinching look at taboo subjects that are rarely touched upon in mainstream media. Well done to all involved for handling the subjects so well.”

SUICIDE Awareness With the increase in the rate of suicide, it is every individual’s duty to spread awareness and stop the wrong that is happening around us. We give you a little insight into why it is such a sensitive yet important subject to talk about and what can one do if someone is suffering from such thoughts. 62 SEPTEMBER, 2017 - TULIP

According to statistics, as displayed on www.aasra.info: – Every 3 seconds a person attempts to die. –
Suicide is one of the top three causes of death in the age group of 15-35 years
–
The psychological, social and financial impact of suicide on the family and the society is immeasurable.
–
About 1 lakh people die of suicide in India every year.
–
Each suicide leaves at least 6 people devastated.
–
6 lakhs people become survivors every year in India.
–
Suicide estimates suggest fatalities worldwide could rise to 1.5 million by 2020.
At your level what are the precautions that you can take to prevent your fellow students from committing suicide? What drives these people to the edge?
Suicide is a largely preventable public health problem. There are several NGOs across the country that are committed to the cause of mental health. They run counselling services and suicide helplines for anyone in danger of committing suicide. We need to understand first that,
Ask Asking about suicide can be scary and hard, but it is very important. It is the only way to find out how much danger someone is in. It also lets the person you’re concerned about know that you’re a safe person to talk to. Many people are afraid to talk about suicide. They fear that others will react with blame, fear, panic, or guilt. But it is often a great relief to someone thinking about suicide to know that you have noticed their pain. And although many people don’t believe this, asking about suicide will NOT suggest the idea to someone or encourage someone to kill themselves.
Get Help Anyone can feel suicidal, but the feeling doesn’t last forever. Getting help for someone who is feeling suicidal can save their life. Never try to help a suicidal person by yourself. Even if you are a professional (doctor, counselor, etc.), don’t do it alone. A suicidal person needs a lot of attention and support – more than any one person can give. The more helpers the better. Get help from: A counselor or therapist A teacher The local hospital emergency room A guidance counselor A nurse or doctor. You can contact SEVA, they have been doing awareness walks either independently or in association with like-minded social groups. While this has been highly appreciated and acknowledged even by WHO, people at SEVA are making attempts to reach out to a larger number than what has been possible by awareness walks all these years.
What are the different reasons which drive people to suicide?
Most importantly, what can one do to help a person who is thinking of doing such a crime?
Listen If you know someone who might be thinking about suicide, you can help them first just by listening. Very often, people who think suicide is a choice for them feel like they have no other options, like they have no control over their lives, and that no one cares about them. Listening to someone can: Show that you care Give them a greater feeling of control Help them feel connected to someone else

Once regarded as the center of Hyderabad, the magnificent Chowmahalla Palace was the seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty where the Nizams entertained their official guests and royal visitors. Built over 200 years ago, Chowmahalla is renowned for its unique style and elegance. A synthesis of many architectural styles and influences, the Palace Complex has been meticulously restored. Open now to select individuals and corporates for hosting their dinners, receptions and cultural evenings, Chowmahalla is a location that’s unmatchable for exclusivity, and offers an experience guests will never forget. Hyderabad is a city with a history that reads like a love story and a past that sounds like a fairy tale. The rule of the Nizams fills pages and pages of this history with a legendary patronage of arts, architecture and science. Testimony to this sensitivity are the many exquisite monuments of Hyderabad. One monument that in its intrinsic grandeur still exudes the power of yore is the Chowmahalla Palace. (Chow means four. And Mahal means Palace. Chow-Mahalla therefore means four palaces). While Nizam Salabhat Jung is credited with initiating the construction of the palace complex in 1750, it was Nizam Afzar-ud-Dawla Bahadur who ensured that it was completed between 1857 and 1869.Extending from the Laad Bazaar on the north to the Aspan Chowk Road on the south, the palace originally covered 45 acres but regrettably only 12 acres remain. Of these the Aftab Mahal is the grandest of them all and is a two storied building with a European facade of Corinthian columns and a parapet without pediment. ENTERTAINMENT Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Sairat’ director Nagraj Manjule’s next film Two-time National Awardwinning Marathi filmmaker, Nagraj Manjule, is making his Bollywood debut with a yet-untitled social drama. It features Amitabh Bachchan as a patriarch with shades of grey. After his 2016 drama, ‘Sairat’, went on to become the highest grossing Marathi film, being remade in Telugu and Punjabi and picked up by Karan Johar for a Hindiremake, Nagraj began scripting another film. He had the concept for a while and had planned it as a Marathi film, but after ‘Sairat’, he wanted to revisit the story in Hindi. “Nagraj worked on it for a year-and-a-half before taking the script to Bachchan in January. The project was locked soon after,” reveals a source close to the development, adding that the film is expected to roll later this year.
‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ gets release date in US
Director Alankrita Shrivastava’s film ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ is set to release in the US on September 15. The film, starring Konkona SenSharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur, explores women’s sexuality. Konkona took to Twitter to share the news, writing, “So pleased that ‘Lipstick...’ will release in the US!! Please watch.”The film had won several prizes, including the Spirit of Asia Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival, the Oxfam Award for the best film on gender equality at the Mumbai Film Festival. Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had earlier refused certification to the film, saying that it was “lady oriented” and had “sexual scenes, abusive words”.
Kim Kardashian: Why Taylor Swift’s Diss Track ‘Isn’t Really Bothering Her’ At All
Kim Kardashian has been pretty riled up by drama with Taylor Swift in the past, but this time she’s shockingly calm! A source tells HL that Tay’s ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ ‘isn’t really bothering’ the reality star. Here’s why! Kim Kardashian, and Taylor Swift, have had a rocky history at best. After all, Kim was the one who released those videos of Taylor giving Kanye West, permission to use her name in “Famous. She wanted to all of a sudden act like she didn’t. I swear, my husband gets so much sh*t for things [when] he really was doing proper protocol and even called to get it approved.” However, Kim’s reaction is shockingly different after Taylor apparently dissed her and her hubby on “Look What You Made Me Do.” Kim might be letting the song roll off her back like water, but Kanye sure isn’t! “Kanye is clearly pissed over the song,” said the source. He’s already planning his response, and it’s not going to be pretty. “Taylor hasn’t heard the last of Kanye’s wrath.”
Angelina Jolie: Why She Ignored Brad Pitt Completely
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were married on August 23, 2014 after nearly a decade-long romance and six children, including three biological. However, the day is no longer a celebration of their love and instead a day to lay low and avoid each other. While their split is still fresh and, unfortunately, ongoing, HollywoodLife.com has EXCLUSIVELY learned why Brad and Angelina were not interested in communicating with each other on what wold have been their third wedding anniversary. “Angelina ignored her ex, Brad, yesterday on what was and would have been their wedding anniversary,” a family insider explained. But, why? “After everything they have been through, neither one reached out to the other as they are both moving on with life alone.”

Balayya Can Make Amitabh President?
Balakrishna has agreed to do Krishna Vamsi’s Rythu on condition that Amitabh Bachchan would be part of the film which requires a larger-than-life person to essay a prominent role in the film. However, Amitabh had gently turned down the role in the film for his own reasons that were revealed later. Amitabh was quite impressed but he couldn’t take it up since he was one of the contenders for the top post. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly had Amitabh in the mind and wanted him to nominate for a key post - either President or Vice President. Amidst that situation, Amitabh said no to Balayya and the film subsequently didn’t materialise as Balayya was adamant on having Amitabh. Now that Amitabh has ‘missed’ the chance to occupy the top slot in real, he would have no qualms to take up the role on screen now. If Balayya and Krishna Vamsi could meet Amitabh again, probably, the film could materialise.

sing star Chen Up next for Sindhu: Ri Yufei Those who have followed the career of the 19-year-old reigning junior world champion know that she is rising fast to become the next superstar in the shuttle world. In what can be described as a tough phase for Chinese badminton, Yufei offers them a hope with her amazing performances. With Sun Yu and He Binjiao losing in the earlier rounds, Yufei is the best bet for China at the Worlds now. Yufei, who will play Sindhu in the semifinal on Saturday, has a 1-1 record against the Indian. Sindhu predicted a tough match against Yufei on Saturday. “She is a good player and is in good form here. It is not going to be easy. I just have to play my game and give my best tomorrow. It is never easy in the semifinal of a World Championship, anything can happen. I have to be prepared for everything,” Sindhu said. Yufei is ranked 10th in the world and had won 19 of the 29 matches she has played this year. She has a career win-loss record of 102-37. Sindhu is ranked No. 4 in the world and has a career win-loss record of 223-98. This year, her win-loss record is 21-9.
A winning start for India at World Boxing Championships
Indian boxers were off to a resounding start at the 19th World Boxing Championships, notching an all-win opening day with contrasting victories here. Amit Phangal (49kg) and Gaurav Bidhuri (56kg), both making their debut at the mega-event, were the only Indians in action in the late evening session and they had the contingent ecstatic by moving into the second round here on Friday. Asian bronze-medallist Amit was the first to take the ring and shrugged off a slow start to edge past Italian Federico Serra in a split verdict. Gaurav was the next man in for India and he was up against Sam Goodman, an 18-year-old world youth bronze- medallist and Oceania champion who sought crowd-funding to compete in the big event. The 23-year-old Indian, disadvantaged to an extent by his short height, more than made up for it with his relentless attacks and didn’t concede much to his younger opponent. In fact, Goodman was left rather dazed by Gaurav’s hitting and had little to offer in retaliation. TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2017 69

MOVIES Movie Reviews
Sniff Stanley Ka Dabba director Amole Gupte has a way with kids, and gives us some charming scenes between his pint-sized hero and his friends. Children, in Gupte’s films, have distinct personalities and defining characteristics, unlike most Hindi films where they fall into one of two broad categories: precocious or cutesy. The kids in “Sniff” are bright, enterprising and yet innocent, and refreshingly neither Gupte nor the adult characters in the film patronize them. Sunny uses his heightened sense of smell as a superpower of sorts, happily helping out neighbors with day-to-day domestic challenges. When a car in their suburban colony goes missing, he rounds up two of his friends and decides to investigate the incident. It’s a slim idea, and unfortunately the script never feels adequately developed. The film also suffers from an identity crisis in that it seems confused about who it is intended for. Sniff isn’t a terrible film by any accounts. Khushmeet Gill aka Sunny makes for a determined little detective and he’s good in the part. But there’s just not enough by way of a compelling plot to allow our young Sherlock to shine. Anabelle Creation Annabelle: Creation borrows heavily from modern Spanish horror movies – movies like El Orfanato, Los ojos de Julia – which is fortunate, because modern American horror movies are (usually) the pits. But to appreciate good horror, we must first understand a key difference. The sight of a pair of dolls’ hands unexpectedly appearing out of the darkness, and performing a quick clap, is an efficient scare - but it only lasts for a moment. It’s an empty visual, designed to startle you and do little else. You’ll probably chuckle sheepishly when it’s over, but that’s only out of relief. No one wants to admit that they’re easily manipulated while watching horror movies, but here’s the truth: Most people are.You could perhaps chalk it down to low expectations, or a general disinterest in the Conjuring universe, but for me, Annabelle: Creation is a genuinely well-made movie, and should work like gangbusters at late night screenings.
Arjun Reddy The breakup story of the hero is showcased in such a dark manner that it has never been touched in Telugu films before. In other words, you can say that the film is the story of a modern Devdas which is shown in a contemporary manner.Vijay Devarakonda stuns you with his performance which is surely award winning. Debutante Shalini is also impressive and does her role perfectly. Special mention should go to Rahul Ramakrishna who plays the hero’s close friend. The first half is quite aggressive and showcases the love story in a very interesting manner. The medical college scenes and the way Vijay behaves post his break up have been written well. On the whole, Arjun Reddy is a new age Telugu cinema which has never been attempted before. It is intense, and hard-hitting with its intent. The youth will surely love this break-up saga which single handed relies on Vijay Devarakonda’s stand out performance. All those who like different films and can bear three hours of run time, you have a pretty good watch this weekend.
