Dating Jim Carry!
Following a five-year relationship with Jim Carrey, it didn’t take long for Jenny McCarthy to move on to Paul Krepelka. But the funny man is doing just fine himself in the wake of this split, too. Witnesses spotted him holding hands with Anchal Joseph last night, a 24-year old former contestant on America’s Next Top Model. She and Carrey were seen outside the theater of Laura Linney’s new play, “Time Stands Still.” A native of New Delhi, Joseph is pursuing a modeling career in New York. She was the seventh contestant kicked off the seventh season of that aforementioned Tyra Banks-hosted reality competition. Not a bad catch, Jim. Not a bad catch at all.
KIM’S TAKES On Teen Mom
K
Kim Kardashian sides with Free Britney. Kim has blogged the following: It seems that shows like Teen Mom are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy seem cool in the eyes of young girls. The kids from these shows are all over the news, even on the covers of magazines, and have been become almost like celebrities, but girls, these are not people you should idolize! When I think back to when I was 16, there is no way I would even have considered having a baby. That thought wouldn’t even have entered my head. Having a baby is one one of the biggest, and most life-changing decisions a person can make and while I’m not saying that no teen is in the position to raise a child, having a baby so young shouldn’t be seen as the trendy thing to do. We couldn’t agree with Kim more. Amber Portwood, on the other hand?

Halle Berry: It’s War
Apparently, there’s a reason why Gabriel Aubry recently panicked over his paternity. The Canadian model filed a motion on December 30 to be officially, legally declared the father of Nahla, the two-year old daughter he shares with Halle Berry. Insiders tell Radar Online his concern over custody status is based on a series of explosive fights with his ex. “Whenever Gabriel doesn’t do exactly what Halle tells him to do, or if he does something she doesn’t approve of or like, she goes crazy on him, screaming and shouting,” the source says. Referring to Berry as someone with a “nasty temper,” this friend says things grew more heated than ever near the end of the year, as Aubry was spotted out in public with Kim Kardashian and others. “Halle was absolutely furious and had a complete melt-down. She basically gave him an ultimatum: choose between dating other women and carrying on being on her good side... in the end he just got sick of being bossed around and told what to do by his ex-girlfriend.” 6 TULIP FEBRUARY 01-15, 2011

To team up again
The famous duo of Love Aaj Kal, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone will work together in Illuminati Films. Illuminati Films is Saif’s home production with partner Dinesh Vijan. Imtiaz Ali who had directed Love Aaj Kal has scripted this untitled movie. The movie will go on floors in April 2011 and will be shot in New Delhi, Spain and London. When asked Saif about this he says, “I was waiting for a script as contemporary and relevant as this is to come my way and I agree that this has been worth the wait. The story is funny, romantic and it has a perfect balance of entertainment and drama. I wanted to go for a love story with a modern treatment and sensibility.” When asked about working with Deepika Padukone, the actor says, “I am looking forward for my pairing with her again. She has a great role and I think she has grown a lot post Love Aaj Kal and she will handle this role very well.” Imtiaz’s earlier movies Socha Na Tha, Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal all have delved on relationships about the various choices in life. This movie will be in the same space as Love Aaj Kal left off and the roller coasters from there.
RANBIR VOTED
as the Sexiest Asian Man
T
The Rockstar of Bollywood, Ranbir Kapoor has finally clinched the Sexiest Asian Man title, beating some strong competitors like John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan. This Kapoor scion, who is famous for his high profile romances, topped the survey, which was conducted by the London Weekly, Eastern Eye. The 28-year-old heartthrob of the nation says, “If the women did not like me I would feel that something is wrong, but it does feel good. I do understand that the fans I have comprised mainly of women, it feels good to be wanted by so many women.” Meanwhile the editor of Eastern Eye said that the actor had claimed for this title with an overwhelming margin. The editor said, “Usually it is a closely fought contest, where as this year there was only one clear winner. Winning by large margin is remarkable when you take into consideration the very high profile men who were in the list.” The Bollywood hunk John Abraham missed this spot and landed second on this. Hrithik Roshan got the third spot while R&B star Jay Sean got the fourth spot.

An Affair
The newcomer in Bollywood Ranveer Singh recently made his debut in Band Baaja Baaraat opposite Anushka Sharma and confirmed that they both are very good friends. He does not bother about the rumors, which claim that they both are romantically involved. Ranveer told, “She and I are very god friends. How do I change the truth just because it sounds clichéd? Neither of us are affected about what people are saying. We come from different schools of filmmaking. I am a trained actor and she has never been to an acting school. As a model she has faced the camera several times and is two films older to me. She is a one-take actor and I believe in a lot of rehearsal, which was the only thing that annoyed Anushka the most. Because her first take was always the best. We had to come to a middle ground before we both could take off. Now, I feel that I was rehearsing more than required because it was my first movie. She is the one who taught me how to be spontaneous. But the fact is we had to be complete loggerheads on screen and this was helped with our constant friction on the sets regarding the approach of acting.” FEBRUARY 01-15, 2011 TULIP 7

NAGARJUNA
Soon to Don Six Pack
King Nagarjuna is definitely the only Tollywood veteran hero to have maintained a consistent fit physique and look for the last 20 years! Despite his age, Nagarjuna can still compete with any new generation hero, including his son Naga Chaitanya, Ram Charan Teja or Sumanth. Now the actor is getting ready to sport the much-desired six pack abs for his forthcoming socio-fantasy Dhamarukam, directed by Srinivasa Reddy and produced by Venkat of RR Movie Makers with Anushka as the heroine. The director said that Nag’s character in the film demands a hero with machismo; hence Nagarjuna is now working hard to build those six pack abs. According to physical trainers, it would be definitely hard for an actor like Nagarjuna to build six pack abs in his 50s, but nothing is impossible, right?

at the Box Office
Dhanush starrer Aadukalam has won the Pongal race at the box-office. The story is set in a Madurai suburb where rooster/cock fight is a major sport and winning it is a prestige issue among those who breed the cocks. The movie has overtaken Karthi’s Siruthai and Vijay’s Kaavalan in first two days collections. Aadukalam grossed Rs.71 lakhs in two days. Karthi starrer Siruthai has collected Rs.65 lakhs. Though, the movie got thumbs up from critics, it received mixed response from the audience. Karthi has given an excellent performance. His comedy and one-liners as Rocket Raja and his killer looks of a tough cop steals the hearts of the audience. Santhanam is at his usual best and tickles funny bones of the audience. Tamanna has a limited role to play and is reduced to a navel flaunting glam doll in the film. Vijay’s Kaavalan, which was released after many controversies, did well on the first day of the release. But mixed reviews from the critics and theatre issues hampered the business. It is in third position by collecting Rs. 51 lakhs

Manchester United’s 37-year-old midfielder Ryan Giggs wants to carry on playing for the Premier League leaders for at least another season. United manager Alex Ferguson welcomed the “good news” that the player, who has spent his entire senior career at the club and who recently made his 600th league appearance, wanted to carry on and said he could even have two more years left. “I am quite happy still playing at the moment. I am really happy and enjoying my football as much as ever. I said if I was still enjoying myself and still getting picked I would carry on. We will sit down and talk but I am really looking forward to playing next year” said Giggs. Ferguson described Giggs as “an incredible human being” because the Welshman could still turn in lively performances in key games almost 20 years since he made his united league debut.

Love story with a twist & bliss
By Neehara Sanjivi
Some things are just meant to be! Take for instance the relationship between Narender Pal Singh and his wife Priya- with all the drama of a Bollywood flick, these two are an ideal match!
Naren and Priya have been married for eight years now and are parents to 6-year old Rohan and 2-year old Daman. Naren is the manager at popular ‘Liquids’ pub and Priya is a school teacher at St. Xavier’s Convent School. They were together for two years before they got married. “We were introduced to each other by a common friend she was in college and I worked at a restaurant” says Naren. So how did Naren propose to Priya? “It’s a VERY long story!” laughs Naren, while Priya is in just a fit of giggles! Naren narrates the story without sparing any of the details. “The day I was going to meet her I went to the salon to get a shave and the barber was giving me a head massage. He told me that the hair oil that he was using would clear my eyes out if he puts one drop in each eye so I told him to go ahead with that. So when I went to meet her which was about fifteentwenty minutes later, my eyes were red and watering and it looked like I had been crying so I took advantage of this opportunity to tell her that I loved her very much and couldn’t live without her!” he laughs. “I was very shocked that he was crying then one of my friends convinced me that he was a nice guy and he would take good care of me and that is how I agreed” adds Priya. Much later the truth about the tears came out giggles the lady. Priya was not very sure about wanting to be with Naren mostly because of her family. “I knew my parents would not agree to it and he proposed to me at a time when my parents were ill and in the hospitalized and I did not want to do or say anything that would upset them” confesses Priya. “I come from a very conservative Marwadi family and he’s a Punjabi and I told him that my parents would never agree to us getting married and it’s best if we stop seeing each other” says Priya “ then one day around Dussera I was playing Dandiya, I prayed to the goddess and then I knew that I should be with him” 18 TULIP FEBRUARY 01-15, 2011

Priya called Naren at a very odd hour at night and said “I love you” in Telugu to him- which was really cute since she does not speak Telugu! “Then I asked her to come to Hyderabad and she did” smiles Naren. They were married shortly after that and Priya lived with Naren and his mother. Their wedding was not very big with just a few family members and friends. But Naren says that it always felt like there was something that was missing and their family felt complete after the arrival of their two kids. Naren’s profession requires him to work late hours, so how do they spend time together as a family? “Sundays are days that are reserved strictly for family” says Naren. “We usually spend the day at home because it does not make sense to go out and watch a movie or something like that because we’ll all be concentrating on the movie and may not talk to each other as much” he adds. It is quite clear that Naren is the more social one among the two. Priya is more reserved which is quite contrary to what a lot of peoples view about how a night club manager might be like. She is rather simple and a very homely person. “The most that I go out is to school and in and around the area we live in and maybe to our relatives houses but that’s about it” confirms Priya. Naren says that the best gift that Priya could’ve given him is his two kids. And he is all for the surprises that one might expect from him! “I leave for work at around 6 in the evening and I’m back very late and she is already asleep by then. So, I keep the gift that I bring her by her bed side and she sees it when she wakes up and is really happy” says Naren. “He is also a really good cook!” says Priya “He makes the best
Gajjar Ka Halwa!” Naren also puts his culinary skills to work for special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries. “I am very lucky to have found him. He’s the most loving and caring person.” adds Priya. Once you marry into a new family there are a lot of adjustments that one has to make. Adjusting with Naren and his mom was quite easy for Priya. “I’m very comfortable here and I and aunty have grown very close.” says Priya. “Sometimes I discuss things with her much before I do with Naren!” she grins. Many wives would normally find it difficult to cope with the fact that their husband worked really late nights at a night club but Priya has adjusted well to it. “I know that being in the hospitality industry he has to meet a lot of people and initially it bothered me and I had a hard time adjusting with it but now I’m used to it and I know that it is part of his job” confesses Priya. “Priya has been with me through everything! She is very understanding.” smiles Naren. “We started from scratch to get to where we are. I started out as a bartender and now I am the manager of Liquids” he adds. FEBRUARY 01-15, 2011 TULIP 19

Who always throws the tantrums? Naren: Me Priya: Naren When they usually have a fight, they agree that Naren is usually the one who starts it! Through the entire time that they have been together, there have been a lot of funny incidents that have occurred and Naren and Priya shared one of them. This was when we just began seeing each other and I had made her this fan with a coconut palm and I wrote ‘I love you Priya’ on it at the bottom and when I gave it to her she took it and fanned herself and said ‘yeh hawah ke liye accha hai!’ and didn’t even notice what I had written on it!” laughs Naren. Priya is very conscious in front of the camera and just bursts out laughing every time she poses for a picture and Naren on the other hand is quite at ease in front of the camera. “I get very conscious in front of the camera and I cannot stop laughing! I don’t know how I managed on our wedding day when we had to take so many pictures” she laughs. Naren and Priya are very open about everything in their life. “We are very straight forward people. We say things the way they are. There is no fakeness or anything as such” says Naren. They seem as in love as they were the day that they met. Having their kids has only made them stronger as a couple and has made them excellent parents. So here is wishing this fun couple a lifetime of happiness and much more!

DATE DRESSING
FOR HER What to wear on a date can bamboozle even the most fashionable man or woman. This Valentine’s day impress your man with the right dressing style. You want to look fabulous but not unattainable, chic but not cheap. Add to the problem that you may or may not be familiar with where you are going, if that is what your inhibitions are then throw them away as help is here. As your hearts go fluttering pitter-patter and your face blushes, DIPIKA PILLAY gives you a lowdown on what to wear for each part of this special day. GRABBING A BITE WITH SUNRISE Cheat code- Classic colours and elegance meet perfection He has a late morning flight to catch and you have a meeting that cannot be postponed. Then catch up over a breakfast date. Who says breakfast dates are not romantic? Imagine morning intimate conversations just when the sun is rising amidst chilly winter and chirping birds without traffic, honking cars or horrible rush. The scenario is oh- so perfect. So while you are gorging on your hot pancakes doused with honey, biting into warm muffins, indulging in waffles slathered with heavy cream or chewing the crispy hash browns make sure your apparels have close resemblance to the colour of your food. Yes browns, beige and dark coffee colour is fantabulous for the mornings. Wear pleated or pencil skirts, one shade lighter than what you usually wear, or trade walking shoes for pumps. Don’t make big changes in makeup, though. Men have definite reactions to make-up, and if your face looks noticeably different early morning, he will notice the change. Don’t carry a big bag or wear a bling accessory unless you need to report to work right from there.

As for the clothing keep it simple. Sling a scarf over your tee, wear comfortable jeans and cute sneakers or slip into a cardigan. POP THE PLATTER WITH LUNCH Cheat code- Go prepped up and make a statement. It’s tempting to dress as sexy as the magazine models, but in the harsh light of day it rarely works out that way. Sexy has a way of turning sleazy when you least expect it. So save the micro-minis and see-through tops for those rumpus-filled evenings and opt for looking pretty in public. Wear a simple dress and peep toes or a striking tee with light colored jeans. Nothing too sexy, nothing that can’t be washed if you have gravy spilled on you. Concentrate on the jewellery- wear simple studded or shiningly polished ones that compliment your skin tone. Nautical stripes are feisty and fashionable which add a sleek and smart look.

ROCK THE PARTY WITH HIGH VOLTAGE GLAMOUR Cheat code- Follow the trend with a little glitter and paparazzi You’ve done the hard part: Caught your crush, lined up a date, decided on a time and place, now all that’s left is figuring out just what in the world you’re going to wear. To make getting dressed fuss-free and give those stomach butterflies a rest consult this flirty frock guide. From charming non printed shifts to vamp-worthy numbers, here are nine styles that are guaranteed to make them melt. Party hard in hues of red and black and dance the night away to mark this special occasion. Ill fitting kurtas, micro miniskirts and pale colours are a strict no-no. There is no substitute for the little black dress. LBD is equivalent to the men’s fashion outfit: the classic dark grey suit. If you don’t have one of these must-haves, get out the catalogs, visit your favourite designer and choose the version that suits you best. Add a handy purse, trendy pumps and sparkling diamonds to match, and there you have it. For premium wearability, your dress should be of medium length, and although the classic is tubeless, one shoulder dresses also look good. WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY IN YOUR LIFE? It’s a stressing day filled with work. There are early morning shoots, late night shoots and without a break shoots. I get up early report on time with my makeup done and start the process. When I’m working I resemble the authentic workaholics, completely focuses and immersed in work. People find me boring at work but once I’m done I’m back to the normal bubbly and chirpy Veena. On a day off I’m completely the opposite. I switch away from technology- no TV, no Net and no Mobiles. I wake up really late, have a refreshing cup of bed tea, indulge in a lavish brunch, clean the corsets, assemble the servants and cook for the family, play with the dogs and stay indoors. God had given me everything. I came to India and Bigg Boss to spread the message of love. It was being said before me that artistes from across the border had no acceptance or support in India. I’ve disproved that. WHAT NEXT? WHAT HAVE YOU PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE? I’ll sign projects in some time. Meanwhile I plan to produce documentaries and short films under my production house to spread love and peace. I want to improve Pakistan’s image globally and prove that we are a nation full of talent, love and emotions. I’m also planning to take this water filter project of mine to the next level in partnership. Pamela Anderson had told me that she wanted to visit Pakistan but couldn’t manage to get a visa. I’ve done a lot of work during the recent floods back home. Pamela came with a water filter that
she’s been promoting as a part of an international water conservation project and distributed them in countries that were badly hit by shortage of clean drinking water. The filter is cheap, but lasts for more than a decade. It’s cost-effective and would suit the pockets of middle-class people in both countries. HOW HAS THE EXPERIENCE BEEN OF STAYING IN INDIA?

RELATIONSHIPS
As the years go by and seasons pass, some couples find themselves in what can only be described as a rut. With most of the exciting, new feelings of young romance gone, something else insidiously appears. It’s called life. Life elbows its way in, leaving the romance by the wayside, as bills, kids, work, laundry, soccer practice and PTA meetings obliterate any and all means of kissing, hugging and playing footsie under the table. There are ways, however, to reclaim your romantic life, which, although different than your old romance, will ultimately be the better and more effective choice for you both in your life right here, right now

MEN PEDICURE Men pedicures get most men thinking the wrong way once they hear the name. Many men believe that pedicures are strictly a female thing. Nothing could be further from the truth! A pedicure is simply the care of the feet to avoid complications and to make them look their best. Since we all have feet, pedicures are in no way restricted to only females. Getting a mens pedicure can be extremly beneficial. This is most likely a major reason that a lot of guys have problems with their feet, such as ingrown toenails. The majority of males however don’t begin to start getting men pedicures until something goes wrong. This behavior is much like the male outlook on visiting the doctor – generally they don’t go until they have to be wheeled there.

A book on quotes, phrases and idioms By Aaliyah Bilgrami

BOOK REVIEW I recently read the book P.T.O. This book is a review of what truly motivates people. Apparently, our society as a whole pretty much takes the wrong approach at motivating people. The author has done justice towards the readers. The book explains that for a long time humans have been using the “carrot and stick” approach to motivation. For example, an employee’s compensation is often tied to specific metrics like hitting a targeted release date, or reaching certain sales goals. The better the metric, the better the pay. The worse the metric, the worse the pay.

However, this is apparently a recipe for underperformance. The author sites a number studies that show that, yes, tying performance to compensation does focus their attention on a task. The problem is, people focused their attention on the wrong places and creativity suffered. It turns out that, with the exception of unskilled labour tasks such as a repetitive factory work, that the greater the carrot, the worse performance actually gets. People have no passion in their lie. Everyone is working just to earn a handsome salary. Is making money the only criteria? Of course, when it comes down to it, everyone needs to eat and money is a rather central component of that. So we’ve got to be paid for our work to achieve some baseline but just ask yourself are you really making efforts in the right direction. Its not just with work, we all are not satisfied with ourselves the way we look.

Kissa of the
Parampara’s
a legendary saga By Deepa S K
What’s common between the Kapoor’s, Bachan’s and Gandhi’s. It’s called Legacy. ‘Legacy’ is a very powerful word. From business to Bollywood legacy is one of the most common heard and understood word in this world that has been inherited biologically or monetarily. The world is a very strange place to live and evolve in. And in this mad rush of world, where survival of the fittest is becoming an old passé, to survive and expand is becoming a DNA issue and the norm of this world. Too complicated to understand, let me say like this, try remembering in the movie’ Khabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’, the Big B, ‘Raichand’ gives an emotional gyaan session about the importance of PARAMAPARA and makes him promise that he will always strive to keep his ‘Parivaar ka naam uncha’ forever. (Now you get what I’m talking about!) 36 TULIP FEBRUARY 01-15, 2011
P
ARAMPARA OF THE PARIVAAR is one famous theme that goes on in the real and the reel world. A perfect example of this is the living Kapoor Kandhaan. From Prithviraj to Randhir Kapoor, it’s the fourth generation ruling the rooster in Bollywood. Talk about monopoly in this democratic struggling Bollywood. I’m not accusing them for ruling the kingdom, just that I’m not really in awe in seeing just couple of names over and over again. Thankfully we have the Khan’s who now hold different synonyms of the word ‘king’. But me thinks, that even their offsprings will spring after a decade or so and debut in the silver screen. Let’s take examples of the business icons Tata’s, Birla’s, Mallya’s, Reddy’s and many more. Whom do you see on board-
their family members. When asked why the decision to have them as decision makers, the answer was its easier to handle a family member than an outsider. This to some extent will prove right, as in when circumstances reach where you don’t have to wash your dirty linen in public. But, again family who are loved one’s when money, status, ego hits the helm- the family name turns into a dirty game-blame. The best example is the ‘wush wash’ of the ‘Reliance’ episode. So the whole world knew of the brotherly war, so much so that it affected the stock market and the central had to intervene. What can I say…? Shame Shame!!! But they love it don’t they all the press praise and the support-all for a publicity stunt. Not much to say politics is yet another Parampara parade. Let’s talk of India itself. It’s been over six decades yet, we have leaders as a result of Parampara. Talk about Gandhi’s, Scindia’s, Yadav’s, Reddy’s,Gowd’s, Abdullah’s and many more. Once born in a political family most of them are expected to clad in the mantle of politics. So, they get trained for the reign. It is quite saddening to watch this as
PIECE OF LIFE the world’s largest democratic country is prone to prune leaders in a monarchy manner. Now there has been a lot of information that such families have ‘the stuff’ in their DNA and so they intend take up as a natural. Which as always-I don’t really agree. Now if acting was to be an inbuilt DNA built, I’m not quite sure how did SRK become the ‘Badshaah of Bollywood’ or maybe Edison was just born out of a ‘Bang theory’ when he discovered the ‘bulb’, since his parents were quite the normal people. And did his children turn out to be as brilliant as he was, Google can tell us. So getting back to the importance of ‘parampara’ or legacy, the very fixation of getting the entire clan and setting up an entire seems nothing less than the whole Hitler’s agenda for the pure Aryan race. Don’t you think so? His whole agenda and craziness to transform Germany into a pure race was the very reason for genocide. So much for the obsession just to make a place for your descendants! And the most suprising fact is that the aim janta is also fine with us. So if the dad idolized the Big B, the younger generation is crazy about Junior B. We are a crazy bunch and we are ok. Not understanding the fact that by doing so, we are creating our own Monopoly and a whole panorama of a deity feeling towards them. Having said that, now I feel that the right to know about these icons seems justified. Since, they
have this aura as a result of the common man’s worship towards them, in makes these touch-me-not beings, so very vulnerable yet human. But still we love these God’s, and there are books, interviews, movies, television series dedicated to them. What makes them click? What makes them so special and what is in them that their descendants take on the mantle, and do all of them take the mantle? What went in the mind of Shweta FEBRUARY 01-15, 2011 TULIP 37

Nanda Bachan when she did not choose to get into Bollywood unlike the Kapoor’s or the Sinha’s or why is Priyanka Gandhi so very not in direct view of the ‘Rajneeti’, whilst her brother Rahul is soaring great heights. ‘Aarey apna apna choice hain’ which I really don’t think that is the case. Now don’t think that I’m taking their side. Just a genuine curiosity as to why some of them choose and some don’t or maybe they just play the surrogates around and have a part in the decision making levels. Take any business form the long-lasting Godrej to the local Kameneni business clan, even the woman of the families are slowly introduced into the family business. Nevertheless, only proving the point that, they wish to not delegate work and for many ( justifiable) reasons, they function that way. But, there is hope as they say; we have a new clan of business minds truly democratic who are willing to absorb people outside the family name. Yes, we are talking of the Narayana Murthy’s and a host of business and venture capitalists who have been enlightened by the wisdom of stepping out of their threshold to meet their next bests.
This same scenario can be seen in the movie industry where we have a host of new directors beating the legendary Chopra’s, Johar’s and the Barjatya’s in creative direction and content. So is the case of actors, the scene is the same in most of the regional languages as well. So is it competition or is the great wall of the legends slowly crumbling down like an old monument. Yes and No, I’m guessing. With the way the world is moving, where opportunities are created, made and involved, the present empires will have to move beyond their family web. Kyun? For the simple reason-‘Variety’. Every family is brought up with a set of thoughts that doing something different may not be approved and hence we have the Chopra’s still having their heroine’s getting romanc-

ing in the rain around trees. ‘Mano ya na Mano’. It’s not spite but sheer observation. Be it Rajneeti ya Reel life, you know their signature style. And the time is coming where the people and the audience are looking out for variety like the fresh faces of Kashyap’s or the very own facebook dude’ Mark Zuckerberg’. Mark Zuckerberg’s life is a perfect example of how each person is unique and hell you don’t need a Godfather to grow rich. Ultimately every empires aim is to be rich in all senses, but the Facebook story is history. A Harvard drop out and worked his way to what is called the world’s largest social network. So from where did this guy come and where is he now is what every Indian would say ‘Luck by Chance’ . And what will a typical Hyderabadi comment on such a situation, ‘Chance pe Dance’. It sounds like a dream but believe me you can do it. After all the legendary one’s make dreams come true and they do the impossible and achieve great heights. But still, one can never forget the fact that they are absolute mortals like you and me Looking at the way things are changing, there will be a time when these legends name will become a legendary and will be archived in the memoirs of the great and may be they will take
the place where we document and learn the history of Mughal’s or the Nizams. They are having the times of their lives and one day it will become a thing of the past. There will be a new world, with new talent and with new thoughts and new names who will take on the crown and become a legend. So, the legend will truly become a legend- A Parampara that was, and may be these stories will truly become the start of some book with the start, “Once upon a time there was this empire, legend says, he was a legend.

“When you begin those he does that for her, he bought this for her and etc. I feel like screaming in your ears ‘don’t compare us with other couples, be happy with what you have’.” Phalgun Somaraju, Deejay.

If you think one single movie date means I’m completely head over heels in love with you then all I can say is your way ahead imagining things. I can’t handle the expectations and obligations even before you actually start dating. It makes me ponder are there a few glitches in your programming???
Sandeep Kontham, Engineering Student. Picture this- we are in a deep conversation and I suddenly realize I’m the only one talking while you are busy chit chatting on your blackberry and giving me answers like ‘Um, hmhmhm, what’ I go mad. Lulls and gaps in conversations are horrible.

Why is it that even when we guys open up and clue a girl in to our thoughts and experiences, you ladies insist on knowing more and more info as if you’re on a factFinding mission from hell? It’s hard for us to relate to your wanting to know everything about us.
Noel David, Photographer Don’t tell us about your ex’s neither ask us about our past flames. At some point it bruises our egos. Its just not a good conversation to reveal old stuff.
Showing off like a rich businessman, mistreating waiters and screaming in public is a strict No-No. This kind of aggressive behaviour cant be tolerated by me.

“Being taken for granted is right on top my list. I don’t really mind putting off my plans when you book movie tickets without telling me or drops in at home just when I’m about to leave. I mean that is acceptable. But, then again when we go out with your friends, you somehow decide to ignore me. Why am I even sitting there if that is what you wanted?”

TEN WAYS TO WELCOME
SPRING! By Aaliyah Bilgrami
Usher in the springtime and make up for lost time, here’s our list of ten easy ways to welcome this most welcome time of year!
1. Cut fresh flowers! - Cut fresh flowers from your yard or pick some up at the grocery store! Forsythia, daffodils, or tulips arranged in a simple vase and prominently displayed on your kitchen table will lift everyone’s spirits.
2. Open your windows! Letting fresh air into your home is one of the best parts of spring time weather.
3. Create An Inviting Entrance - Wipe down your front door and the surrounding moulding. Sweep the steps and replant flower pots or urns, adding colour and curb appeal! 4. Switch Out Your Winter Coats and Accessories – Sort out your family’s collection of winter coats and accessories. Wash, dry clean and donate as needed! Make room for flip flops, beach towels and spring sports equipment.
6. Plan for Celebrations – Think ahead about the celebrations that arrive each year with the spring time: weddings, graduations, First Communions, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day! The sooner that you give these occasions some thought, the more thoughtful your gifts will be!
46 TULIP FEBRUARY 01-15, 2011
5. Freshen Up Your Wardrobe – Buy yourself something fun and colourful clothes to wear or a fabulous bag to carry.
SPECIAL 8. Lighten Up Your Decor – Consider swapping out heavy drapes or window treatments for light valances or sheers. You’ll have a chance to dry clean or launder the cozy, winter versions and enjoy the bright sunshine that simpler curtains let in. Similarly, trade your duvet and quilt for a cotton or matelasse coverlet.
7. Treat Yourself to a Pedicure! - Sandal season is truly just around the corner – you need to be prepared.
9. Selectively Spring Clean! – Choose only one or two “spring cleaning” tasks and refuse to be overwhelmed by the thought of cleaning your entire house top to bottom! What about just tackling the inside of your hutch? Or your kitchen’s junk drawer? The linen closet or coat closet? Make your decision based on greatest need and don’t look back! And while you’re at it, try sporting some fabulous rubber gloves. These colourful, gingham and ribbon trimmed gloves are so cute that you might almost want to clean something!
10. Plan a Family Picnic! – Celebrate the warm weather with a family picnic! Whether you eat in your yard, at a park, or on your apartment’s balcony, nothing tastes better than food that’s enjoyed outdoors!

SKY HAWKS By Ashwin Balakrishnan
From the 12-horsepower Wright Flyer to today’s mammoth Airbus A380, aviation has taken enormous leaps and bounds to evolve into the major industry it is today. Among the most aweinspiring planes are the military fighter jets used by the world’s larger armed forces. Usually operated and maintained by a country’s Air Force, fighter jets travel extremely quickly and often cross supersonic speeds, making them efficient for both scouting and aerial strikes. Fighter jets have occupied their rightful place on the mantle of engineering worship for a long time; and rightly so. TULIP looks at six of the world’s most iconic winged marvels.
Sukhoi Su-30MKI [India] The all-weather capable Sukhoi Su-30MKI is jointly-engineered by technicians of Russia’s Sukhoi Corporation and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Over 110 of them have been commissioned by the Indian Air Force, the fighter’s premier user. First introduced in September of 2002, each unit of the Su-30MKI costs a whopping 460 crore rupees to build. The aircraft is customized to Indian standards and requirements while also integrating French and Israeli avionics subsystems. It shares many of its capabilities and components with the Sukhoi Su-35 used by the Russian and Venezuelan Air Forces. The Su-30MKI is capable of being armed with air-to-air as well as air-to-surface missiles, bombs, and nuclear warheads. It can reach a top speed of Mach 1.9, or 2120 kph.
Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor [USA] The most advanced piece of aviation in existence, the F-22 supermaneuverable fighter jet is exclusive to and the highlight of the United States Air Force. Though designed as an air superiority fighter, the Raptor is more than apt at conducting ground attacks, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence roles. Lockheed Martin handles the frame, weapons systems, and final assembly; wings, fuselage, avionics, and training systems are provided by Boeing Defense. American military officials consider the stealth-capable F-22 to be the future of its aerial defense system. Capable of all kinds of weaponry, the F-22 typically carries AMRAAM and Sidewinder missiles; the top speed is reportedly Mach 2.25 (2400 kph). 48 TULIP FEBRUARY 01-15, 2011
AUTOMOBILES
Mikoyan MiG-35 [Russia] Russian-made and operated MiG-35s are astounding pieces of aviation engineering. As fast as the F-22 Raptor and as capable and reliable as the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, the MiG is a staple symbol of the Russian Air Force. However, the aircraft is still under development and has not entered official service. Ten prototypes have been commissioned and will enter service pending success in extensive field tests. As of June 2010, three aircraft have been known to be completed and in the testing phase. Exact performance capabilities and what arms they bear standard remains yet to be determined by the Russian Air Force. What is known is that the MiG-35 is extremely close to the fifth-generation standards of the F-22 Raptor, making it extremely beneficial for India that Russia wishes to sell this aircraft to us.
Chengdu J-10 [China] The Chinese boast of a mighty Navy – one of the largest in the world – but their aerial military capabilities are no joke. The Chengdu J-10 is a multi-role fighter aircraft capable of all-weather operation in daylight or night-time conditions. China is currently developing the Shenyang J-15 in order to phase out the Chengdu, which saw its first flight in 1998. Nonetheless, until such time that the Chinese Air Force has a replacement ready, the Chengdu can and will perform admirably. Nicknamed the “Vigorous Dragon,” the Chengdu is on par with such fighter jets as the F-16 Fighting Falcon and Sukhoi Su-27. Armed with air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles developed by China and based on the Israeli Python missiles, the Chengdu also carries a 23mm twin-barrel cannon and can touch Mach 1.9 (2120 kph).
FEBRUARY 01-15, 2011 TULIP 49
Dassault Mirage 2000 [France and 8 other countries]
Manufactured by Dassault Aviation for the French Air Force, small numbers of this fourth-generation fighter can be found in the aerial strike forces of India, Egypt, Peru, Qatar, Greece, Brazil, China, and the United Arab Emirates. The original Mirage 2000 was immensely successful in French service, but has been phased out in favor of more updated variants; it has also spawned a highly-improved variant named the Mirage 2000-5 as well as several export variants. With a top speed of Mach 2.2 (2333 kph) and an arsenal capable of conventional Matra and Exocet missiles as well as the potential to hold nuclear warheads, the Mirage 2000 is a force to reckon with. What makes the Mirage truly amazing, however, is the fact that it has been in service since 1982.
General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon [USA, Israel, and 22 other countries] A staple of the US Air Force, the F-16 is currently the fighter jet of choice of the Israeli Air Force. Another decades-old veteran of the skies, the F-16 was originally introduced in 1978; over 4450 have since been commissioned and built. Though a multi-role fourth-generation fighter jet, the F-16’s best use is as a dogfighter (aerial jet vs. jet fights) thanks to its frameless bubble canopy and extreme maneuverability. The F-16 also has a history of accidents, including one incident as recently as August 2010 when two Greek Air Force F-16s collided in mid-air. The F-16 has one of the most versatile armament systems, able to be loaded with anything from Sidewinders and Pythons to Mavericks and nuclear B-61s.

REVIEW
Focal Point... By Rohan C
Amidst the bustling life in Hyderabad, the serenity ‘Cafe Lamakaan’ had to offer was perfect for screening documentaries. It screened two films, Mugu & Sharanarthi, focusing on issues known by the world over but ironically unheard of in South Asia. The hardships of the Bhutanese refugees or the lack of development in the remote Mugu district of Nepal aren’t something everyone is aware of and these films aim at overcoming this lack of awareness. The films were directed and spearheaded by the 23 year old Rituraj Sapkota of Fl!pmind, who vividly displayed his prowess of the lens by capturing the breathtaking landscapes of Nepal while staying focused on the matters of concern.
Mugu – The conscience of Karnali Rituraj, along with his comrades from Fl!pmind, set out to capture the majestic Snow Leopards of Nepal in the Mugu district of Karnali. Their escapades involved days of trekking to reach these remote villages. However, having spent enough time amongst the locals, they realised that even the endangered cats could wait. The film highlights the ordeals that the people of Mugu go through to earn their daily bread. Sustaining without the basic amenities to lead a healthy life, one cannot help but ponder over the need for development in these remote hills. Mugu is a world heritage site and the preservation of the beauty here goes unsaid. The question this film poses is who decides the need for development? Is it the people who live there or the ones sitting behind a desk miles away?
A typical day for a child
Sharnarthi Rituraj uses this film to depict the lives of the refugees at Goldhap Camp, Nepal. The Bhutanese citizens who seek asylum here have been denied an identity and are forced to live in exile. These refugees were forced to leave their motherland when the previous government imposed harsh policies that violated their cultural and ethnic rights. Even as the young ones sing the national anthem of Bhutan at school, they have and probably will never see the sun rise or set in a land they proudly call their nation.
Supplies for the school
NGO’s and UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) along with Countries like New Zealand, Australia, USA and Canada facilitate these refugees by giving them a life with better education, health and hope. But the film makes you wonder even after all this, what about their true identity? What about the ones who won’t get to know the life outside camp?
A curious face
Rituraj Sapkota
Rituraj feels that he has a rather simple message to convey, he told us “I had to tell a story that is close to me but on a whole it is closer than we think it is. We don’t expect such issues, especially not in the 21st century. India at the moment is a power that cannot be neglected, particularly in South Asia, and some of our neighbouring citizens pay a lot of attention to what the Indian media and people have to say, which is why I feel the need to inform and spread awareness.” Food for thought?
