Over a Cappuccino with
PRIYANKA KHANNA A Makeup artist and hairstylist by profession. She is a fitness freak who loves socializing and a shopaholic. What is a typical day like in your life? My day starts soon. I wake up early cos I love the early morning zest. An hour of Pilates then fixed family time over breakfast which compulsory includes a cup of americano and a bowl of fruits. Being a Makeup Artist I don’t Have any fixed working hours. We have recently expanded our make-up studio and started all services at The Salon. I am available at the salon almost all day. Post work I usually enjoy meeting friends for coffee, sheesha or shopping. How did you end up becoming a Makeup Artist? I have a lil more of my mother’s genes in me. She is a workaholic and shopaholic. She and my sis, love to play dress-up forever. I started in the hospital industry like my mom but after 2 years my passion to dress up and dress others up drove me to this creative field. I had to first gather all my patience and energy and then step by step I mastered doing hair and face. It’s not an easy task. We have to make sure everyone looks perfect on their special days. Even a single hair strand here and there will spoil the look. But seeing the clients pretty and happy makes me very content. So that feeling assures me that I was meant for this field.

What makeup products line would you suggest? Many luxurious brands offer top quality makeup products, that work wonders if used correctly. I swear by NARS. Known for their wide range and premium quality, iconic black and white packaging and cheeky product names like the Climax mascara, Orgasm blush. NARS is a staple of my vanity. Tell us a funny incident which happened with you? When I accidentally applied moisturizer on the face after finishing my entire makeup while getting ready for a party. Laughs! What do you do in your leisure time? Between all my early morning and late-night client calls and salon run and gym routine whenever I get the time firstly, I stay home, cuddle my lil pet, doodle and catch up on sleep. Also, I am always an enthusiast about new diets and the latest fashion trends. So very often you will catch me stalking various dieticians and designers on Instagram. With so much going around with this pandemic, how do you keep mental health in check? I sweat it out it’s as simple as that. Many of us are facing challenges that are overwhelming and cause strong emotions. These 2 years have created a fear of life in us. I feel each one of us have to identify an activity that calms us down & help deal with the stress. In my case, it’s workouts cardio, yoga, pilates or just something as simple as running up and down flights of stairs. When I look at the tracker on my apple watch at the end of the day it makes me happy. What’s on your bucket list to do when the pandemic ends? To catch up on the travel that I have missed.
Rapid Fire If you are given a genie and have to make 2 wishes what will you wish? One - for a diplomat passport so I can travel the world at my will. Two - Corona virus to be over. If you are left in a supermarket and asked to pick up only 3 things what would you pick? Coffee…coffee and different types of coffee. If you had to be paired opposite a hero in a film which actor that would be and what will be the title of the movie? I am not really a movie buff. Yet, I would make it all about me than the hero. If you are allowed to commit one mischievous crime what would you do? I would steal the most luxurious brands of makeup products from all the stores.

FASHION | The rains are here which means you need to change your look to suit the weather as well as look stylish. Here’s how you can do it effortlessly.
Monsoon style tips for men to look fashionable in the rain
The first round of monsoon showers is the best. Everything looks fresh, clean and smells wonderfully earthy. After the punishing summer heat, you look forward to the gloriously cool and cloudy days, when you can curl up in your PJs and sip on a hot cup of tea while the rain works its magic. This is until all that excitement gets showered down into a muddy puddle that you stepped on your way to college and now your socks are moist and everything s sticky. Welcome to the not-so-glorious damp days when you dread wearing white tees and jeans lest you get rained down. Dressing for unpredictable weather isn’t easy and it always helps to know how to style your wardrobe for the season. While the grey days are here to stay, add sunshine by styling your wardrobe. - Peram Srija Reddy
LIP - JUNE, TULIPT-UJULY, 2021 2020 23 45
| FASHION
Layering is key The golden rule for the season is knowing how to layer. The best part about layering is that you can modify your outfit to suit the weather depending on how hot, cool or wet it gets. Get onboard the sporty Athleisure trend with a pair of denim joggers or actif denim for ease and comfort.
Sandy Artist Makeup Artist
Using lightweight fabrics can be beneficial as they dry easily. Polyester won’t cling to your body and will dry quickly. Linen and knits should be avoided because they tend to shrink in water.
Instead of whites and pastels, make room for bright colours and bold prints. Vibrant hues of red, blue and yellow are ideal to beat the gloomy weather. They will not only jazz up your wardrobe but also brighten up your day. While pastels and whites make for attractive formal wear, the rains can create a mess by leaving stains and making them look transparent. Is your footwear ready to face the monsoon? With streets being mucky and waterlogged, it is likely that your favourite pair of leather shoes soak up water like a sponge and you might just lose them. While leather and suede are the two most common materials that men prefer to wear at the workplace, they can easily get damaged in damp weather. Switch to a pair of PU leather shoes, which are monsoon-friendly or wear floaters to work and keep a pair of leather shoes handy at work.

Ideally, denim shorts and chinos work best to prevent mud stains and rain splatters. Add a dash of colour to the grey days by sporting vibrant chinos and printed shorts and tees. Layer this with plain white shirt, checks or washed-out denim shirt for a relaxed vibe.
Tackling the rain is not an easy affair. Choose monsoon-friendly fabrics for your backpack. In case you have to carry your laptop to your workplace, look for bags that come with lightweight rain covers.

Add to your style quotient by picking up transparent umbrellas over the coloured ones. Navigate the rain in style with this sturdy, multifunctional tool. While buying an umbrella, look for quality, style and durability. Trendy transparent windcheaters could be a perfect companion as it would flaunt your outfit and protect you as well. Comfort is the key for monsoons and hence, it’s important that you don’t go overboard with your style because you are anyway going to get drenched. Stick to monsoon-worthy causal style and pile on t-shirts with graphics, patterns, etc. that can take you from boardroom-to-bar. Take out your rugged jeans and you will be right on track.

Jacket and shoes A practical must-have for this season is a waterproof bomber jacket or a wind-cheater or a denim jacket. Umbrellas and hats are a great way to give a more debonair touch to your look. For shoes, you have a range of options, from boots to casual sneakers and rubber-soled penny loafers. Always carry your deodorant or perfume.
Since you are going to be outdoors all day long, a parka jacket is ideal to layer your attire during the monsoon. This trend comes handy because sometimes, even umbrellas can’t arm your style.
Preetham Jukalker Celebrity Stylist & Designer
Thumb rule to stay on point in rains is to own the right kind of fabrics that keep you sweat-free for hours. A button-down shirt in cotton fabric is exactly what your monsoon wardrobe needs. You can be experimental here with tropical prints as they vibe well with the weather. Couple your printed shirts with chinos and let your sartorial garb do the talking. It’s time to keep your oxfords and brogues aside for a while and opt for strappy sandals. While choosing this footwear, make sure the style you choose matches your formal wardrobe as well. In monsoons, your feet deserve a bit of air that closed shoes won’t promise. Strappy sandals are your best bet for the season. ULIPTULIP 48 JUNE, 2020 T2021 26 JULY,

“ Monsoon is around the corner and that means time to get all jackets out to layer it up with simple Casual fashion.
I personally like to wear my denim jackets over simple dark coloured T-shirts and denim shorts as they are very comfortable to step out in rains and always opt for rubber sneakers or crocs. Crocs can be colourful as you go very neutral with clothing. And if you want to stand out with an ultra fashion game then you gotta pin-up GUMBOOTS, they make the look complete with and casual attire. If it’s for evening look in monsoon keep your nice fancy bomber jacket with a elements T-shirt with jeans or high waisted pants be it for men or women. Match it up with colourful sock and sneakers.
”
- Preetham Jukalker
. . . .
A handy tip to ensure that your clothes survive the damp climate is to buy a set of air dehumidifiers for your closet. As drying isn’t as effective, avoid washing your denim often, as this causes the fibres to become weak. This is incredibly important because you spent a fortune on buying your laptop. You can get caught up in the rain anytime, anywhere. So get a bag that’s water-proof, sophisticated and of course durable. Sport a stylish accessory in monsoons but just make sure it is water-proof. A fashionable watch can be a part of your ensemble to take your casual game up a notch. Even if you’re under an umbrella, a fedora gives your look a jaunty but classic edge. With a suit and trench or a casual sports jacket, these hats never go out of style.
.
. .
Denim is the go-to clothing item for men but you may want to rethink this when the rains hit. Denim is one of the least water-resistant fabrics out there and that’s not the only complaint we have against them this monsoon. They take the longest time to dry and there’s nothing worse than sitting through a lecture, a movie or a meeting in soaked jeans. One of the best trousers for men is chinos, made from quick-dry, lightweight fabrics should be your best picks when it pours. Prefer darker shades like olive green, brown etc. for lowers and lighter ones for your uppers. Avoid light-coloured jeans/trousers, as they get stained easily. Easily washable shoes should be your go-to footwear choice during rains. Rubber flipflops, leather sandals, and ankle-length boots are some cool and manageable options. tells us about bonds in a longdistance friendship How have your friends impacted you? I think friends are the ones who have a strong impact on you knowingly or unknowingly. When you see two best friends they are so alike. The way they talk about their interests, their beliefs. Every time I know I’m going wrong, I know my best friend is always there to pull me back. Can you tell us a memory with them that is very close to your heart? Something super close to my heart is that she moved to Canada a year and a half ago, and the day she was leaving we knew we would cry like babies we just hugged and walked away in two different directions. That moment has been stuck with me. I can’t wait for her to come back. Can you explain the bond you hold with them? I think I share an amazing bond with my best friend. It's funny how we were such opposites when we met but now 13 years later we are so alike. She is like a sister I never had.

Abdul Mohsi tells us about the Importance of real friends in life What qualities do you appreciate in your friends? What makes someone special or best friend? I believe that a true friend should have a good heart. There are many situations in life when we have to make some tough decisions. At that time a friend should support another friend. A friend should be emotionally & mentally available in tough times. He or she should not abandon you. What do you usually do with your friends? What is your usual hangout spot? I hangout a lot with my friends so there is no fixed spot as such. We usually plan our meet ups on weekends and meet at any farmhouse for BBQ, sometimes we plan a qawali night and sometimes we hang out at places with live bands. We make sure to take an international trip once a year to spend quality time together. How are your friendships different now than they were when you were a child? The major difference between friendships now and childhood friendships is the responsibility that we are all bound to be it work related or in our personal lives. As children all we had to worry about was either which game to play or how not to lose the game ha-ha!

why core values define friendships
How have your friends impacted you? It’s said you are the company you keep. My friends have always been the ones who have inspired me to push myself. I could never get along with pretentious people, bigots & procrastinators. I share a better bond with people who are fearless, strong-willed and mature headed. These are the friends who constantly inspire me. They remind me that life may be tough, but we have to be tougher. Can you tell us a memory with them that is very close to your heart? There are so many of them! The brightest one is when we went for New Year’s to Goa with my son and another friend’s family. One day, my friend Sapna booked a boat to a small island. We did a small set-up, cooked a meal with crabs, chicken, pineapples etc. All of us elders sat in the shade talking & listening to music while the children played in the warm blue water, making sandcastles and splashing in the waves. Can you explain the bond you hold with them? They say friends are the family we choose. Sapna is the sister I never had while growing up. We know each others’ aspirations, likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses. Having a strong bond doesn’t mean we are controlling. Some of our friendships have fallen apart in the past, but neither she nor I have ever told each other not to speak to them. That’s very childish. We don’t believe in brushing things under the carpet if anything bothers us, we talk to each other about it and understand each other’s point of view. We don’t allow others' perceptions of us to affect our friendship. The only thing we care about is each others’ happiness. If my friend is happy, the rights and wrongs of society don’t matter to me and she believes the same.

Zoya Mirza speaks about how friends turn into family
How have your friends impacted you? My friends have taught me family isn't always the people you've been born with. Some friends go on to become family and I consider myself extremely lucky to have found friends like family. They have taught me that humour and the company of friends can solve anything and everything life throws at you. Through them, I also learnt about my potential. Can you tell us a memory with them that is very close to your heart? Considering that I have different friend groups from all my different walks of life, my birthdays are always memorable since that's the only day all the people I love come together with me. My friends go out of their way to make me feel special on my birthdays. Can you explain the bond you hold with them? My friends have been more than just my friends. They have been my family, and are there for me through every big and small occasion in my life. All my different friend groups help me grow in different ways and have helped me become the best version of myself. They mean the world to me.

talks about the memories friendship brings
How have your friends impacted you? I’m always grateful for all my friends in my life for all the memories and experiences I've had with them. I've learnt to be a better version of myself, evolved, have become more responsible and empathetic, because my friends have bought the best in me. Can you tell us a memory with them that is very close to your heart? I have so many memories to share but some of my fondest memories of my friends are from school and college times. Every day that I have spent with my friends is a memory that is special to me and we are continuing to make new ones every day. Can you explain the bond you hold with them? It’s an unconditional one. As friends, we don't feel obligated to do things for each other but we do it because we want to, and that's the kind of relationship I have with my friends where we are always there for each other but don't have to necessarily speak every day.

What is your usual hangout spot? What do you usually do with your friends? Our favourite chill spot has changed through the years but fat pigeon was always our favourite. We used to go bunk college get some mc Donald’s and go for drives. Now that we’re adults we go for luncheons and talk for hours. This pandemic made it very difficult for us to meet. I miss her very much How are your friendships different now than what they were when you were a child? Friendships were easier when we were little. When you grow up, you always don’t have the time to hangout.

Simeen Naqvi talks about friends that are a home apart from home
What qualities do you appreciate in your friends? What makes someone special or best friend? Friendship to me is about vibes and loyalty without these two I don't think there's any meaning to the word, so the most important qualities that I appreciate in my friends are good and positive vibes and loyalty and what makes them my best friend is the love and support they give me and stand by me through the thick and thin What do you usually do with your friends? What is your usual hangout spot? My friends and I are all food lovers and have unsatiable pallet and appetite for great food and different cuisines we hang out and try out any new joints that serve some lip-smacking, appetizing food but this was mostly pre-pandemic, now we usually throw little tea parties or luncheons for each other at our homes and enjoy good ol ghar ka khana while bonding over some deep conversations about life, travel, current affairs and politics. Can you explain the bond you hold with them? It is definitely difficult to put all my feelings into words but all I can say is that these people are my tribe they are a home apart from home where there's no judgement or raising any eyebrows they are the kind of people I can say anything to and do anything with and never feel like I can't be myself they are my sisters not just best friends especially my best friend Akhila who moved to Canada recently but it never feels like she's away from me she's also my travel buddy and my go to for career advice, they are all very close to my heart because all of to me are the epitome of immense strength and love. highlights facts about a real friendship
What qualities do you appreciate in your friends? What makes someone special or best friend? Honestly, it’s quite simple. A friend should be someone whom you can talk to. About literally anything without feeling uncomfortable or intimidated that they might judge you. Someone who listens to you because they want to and not for the heck of it. What was your best friendship? Are you still friends with him or her? I’ve had quite a few great friendships and I’m still in touch with most of them. However, I cannot pick one particular person as all of them are fabulous people. My two all-time favourite people however are Huma and Fasiha. What do you usually do with your friends? What is your usual hangout spot? I usually have proper deep meaningful conversations. It can be anything ranging from space, time travel, aurora borealis, the human body as most of us are doctors, to unsolved mysteries. Being an epicure, I love gourmet food and I make my friends try it as well. The most common hangout places are Park Hyatt, Trident, and ITC Kohenur.

about the importance of friendship while parenting How have your friends impacted you? The definition of Good Friends for me has always been 'like minded' 'easy going' and most importantly 'trustworthy' individuals, with who I strike a chord and a friendship that promises to last a lifetime. My close-knit circle boasts of ladies from various professions thereby being with them brings so much diverse learning to the table. There isn't a topic under the sun that I can't discuss with them or valuable opinions I can get from them on anything of concern. We are constantly learning from each other. Can you tell us a memory with them that is very close to your heart? On my birthday this year, My husband Sunny organised this extremely special ‘celebrity’ girls day out with my girl gang along with convoy, bodyguards and paparazzi. After a year-long hiatus from social do's this was such a memorable reunion with my friends where we spent the day doing all our 'girly' things together, right from blow drys at the parlour, went for lunch at our favourite restaurant, to having a bull session talking endlessly making up for the lost time, and of course clicking photos. It was just apparent to even my husband how much I had missed my friends and just being with them the entire day made me feel like myself again. Can you explain the bond you hold with them? I always believed that the friends you make in school last a lifetime, but I now also believe that the friendships you make when your kids go to school are stronger than any other. These girls are fellow moms, and I met them through my children, Ruhani and Hunnar, but over time the bond that has grown between us has become unshakable and extremely comforting. We are all in the same boat dealing with the same stress, similar milestones in our lives. We even often take vacations together, we are all foodies, and our favourite pastime in the lockdown has been sending each other goodies to eat. I know we will always be there for each other, more so when our kids fly the nest, leaving us to share all our nostalgia over more 'mommy soirees' with 'delectable food'.

MBBS Research Medical Officer MediCiti Institute of Medical Sciences Growing up studying biology and watching my father work, I grew immensely fond of this complex world and I made my decision to chase after a career in medicine. A genuine passion for medicine, public health advocacy, and an inclination to build long-term relationships with my patients inform my decision to train as an Internal Medicine doctor. As a medical student we are taught to look at patients as just a diseased body but I have come to realise that these lives we treat are priceless and irreplaceable. It has taught me to empathize with my patients and their families. Medicine is a dynamic and ever- evolving field. Two patients with the same disease can be completely different. Diagnosing and treating patients is not just a challenge, it’s a privilege. “Prevention is better than cure” – an age-old saying that we have all learnt growing up. It is especially true today with so many cases of heart disease worldwide. Simple measures like healthy diet and exercise go a long way in preventing serious conditions. But “Do as I say, not as I do” just doesn’t work in medicine. If I am to tell my patients to eat healthy and stay active, then I better practice what I preach. TULIP - JULY, 2021 43

Director, Nvision eye care I come from a family of doctors, my father being a reputed Neurologist. Looking at him, I have always wanted to become a doctor. I have pursued my MBBS from Osmania University. During my MBBS, I noticed that ophthalmology was gaining popularity and micro incision surgery in cataract was evolving. The immediate visual outcome and vow factor which patients experienced in my speciality made me choose this speciality. The key challenge that are faced in my specialty is the post-operative visual outcome so patient’s expectations are very high for post-operative outcome and operating on such patients is always stressful. Being a doctor, I really like the instant gratification that we get from the patients who undergo cataract, LASIK surgeries or corneal transplants have life changing vision postoperatively which we don’t see in many other specialties.
Dr Sanjeev Singh Yadav
Consultant Surgeon, Proctology n Laproscopy. Vice President IMA TS National Secretary IMA AMS. It was my Passion to become a Doctor as my Father was a surgeon and served through services in the Government sector. Doctors are highly respected in this field, which is very gratifying. There were many options for a career field but the feeling of being a Doctor was the most satisfying one. Surgery is all about disease removal, where Medical treatments could fail. Most of the Allopathic care is developed in this direction i.e., a sense of elated success in post-surgery relief and the patients and attender’s happiness gives empathy, more than money or any other pleasure can. Regardless of the challenges faced with time, a relationship between a Doctor and a Patient remains a doubtless friendship and only gets better with time. Accountable Health care services, assault less society on health care providers, 5% GDP on Healthcare, better Insurance services, removal of Middlemen in Healthcare sector, providing better health to poor and middle class citizens must be an initiative that the Government should start looking into more. Medicines must also be affordable, which is a common ailment in co morbid treatment. These should be inexpensive and accessible to the general public. Although times changed from Demi God status to Money Maker, I still feel 90% of the Doctors are not money minded. Commercialization was brought in through Medicare by equating this to Tourism Star culture. Failure of the Government to bring in modern equipment in its sector has led to discord in the society. Pandemic has jolted the Healthcare industry and exposed the state of Affairs of all. CPA by the government says “the patient is a consumer, on the other hand we are a service society.” Doctors are there to serve, but still have a family to bring up, when all of them can earn, including pharmacists, insurance companies, equipment makers, hospital owners, and more, why do Doctors have to take the blame for everything. It is about time everyone starts to introspect and judge the hard work, sleepless nights, anguish of seeing a patient lose his life, as I say we can prolong life but not give or take it. 44 JULY, 2021 TULIP

Senior Interventional Cardiologist Osmania General Hospital I had developed interest in this profession by looking at other senior doctors around our society, I didn’t know about the responsibilities that came with a noble profession like this, by the time I realized I had already developed passion in this field, I knew how to use my skill and potential in making this world a better place. I strongly believe that being a doctor is a very respectable and a responsible profession at the same time. The truth, astonishment, happiness and pleasure that fills my heart, when me and my team notice improvement and recovery of a patient and their heart rhythm while the patient is still on our procedure table, this is something that you don’t see in any other departments. In Cardiology, there are a lot of challenges like treating and reliving the patients in pain and emergency cases, seeing the patient recover and improve on table while many other patients who have to be treated come in. It is a profession where knowledge, power and heart come together. “You may see me struggle but you will never see me quit.” We, the doctors, take the ultimate challenge to help, to heal, to educate people — from the time you decide to go down the road of medicine. To help those who cannot help themselves and educate people not to take unnecessary medications. Medicine is science of uncertainty and art of probability. Medicine is where science marries Art, research marries a creativity.

Associate Professor Government Dental College I have a lot of doctors in my family, who used to inspire me at a very young age, saving lives and having the power to heal always felt like a noble thing to do. I always had that fascination for the white coats since childhood. To be a dentist wasn’t pre-planned, but now I’m glad and feel blessed to be a dentist and practicing dentistry has become a passion. Being associated with top notch Practioners is a blessing in disguise, have to say I am really lucky! Pre-covid, I’ve always enjoyed dentistry to the fullest. But Covid has brought challenges which are unknown and unseen, so it’s the fear of the unknown. At present with the black fungus cases on a rise, treatment modalities are a big challenge as it is the head and neck region especially oral cavity which is primarily affected. As an Oral pathologist, we diagnose biopsies. Each and every case presents differently and to come to a correct diagnosis is a challenge. As a girl, the personal challenge is loud and clear, work and family balance. I am really glad I’ve been able to do that for years and want to continue doing it. Obviously, it keeps getting difficult with each passing day with life throwing new challenges but there’s no looking back! I’m lucky to have a very supportive family who have backed me in every stretch of my journey. To like a profession you need to enjoy what you are doing. And I thoroughly enjoy it! At the end of the day, to make and see beautiful smiles gives immense satisfaction and being able to relieve a fellow human being in pain and saving lives is noble. “Success is in the trying, and not the triumph! So, for me it has always been “ get up, dress up and show up” , no matter what lies ahead! I’m proud that I have tried my best to do this every single day.

I have always wanted to help people, take away their pain and sufferings by giving them a medical treatment and healthcare. Paediatrics is a challenging speciality, as the patient can’t express himself/ herself and can’t articulate how they feel. The most challenging part in this field is that in spite of the best of the care sometimes we may lose a patient, and another challenging part is to provide world class care at nominal cost which is very tough. There’s no other profession which is so rewarding and gratifying than medicine, and nothing better than seeing people joyful and healthy, knowing that you play a big role in restoring their health and relieving their pain is one of the most important and strongest reason that led to me being so passionate about this profession. “Be good, do good and try to help as many people as possible in this lifetime.” is a saying that I believe in strongly.

Becoming a doctor is what I wanted to do since childhood. The intricacies of human body always intrigued me and when I realised that becoming a doctor would give me a real opportunity to impact people’s lives in a meaningful way, I decided to pursue it as a profession. I had the good fortune of witnessing many renowned doctors in my extended family who were an inspiration for me and made me want to pursue this wonderful profession. Oxygen is the essence of life, Lung is the most important organ in ensuring adequate amount of oxygen in the body. There is a general lack of awareness regarding diseases of the lung. My goal in becoming a Pulmonologist was to increase public awareness regarding lung diseases and ensure the best medical care to my patients. The major challenge that clinicians face today is the eroding trust in the doctor-patient relationship. It should be our duty as a society to restore that trust back in this beautiful relationship, with the explosion of social media there are a lot of misconceptions regarding people’s health which have to be cleared. On a personal note, giving adequate time to your family also becomes challenging some times. Medicine as a profession is challenging and satisfying in equal measure. The happiness and satisfaction that one gets in successfully treating a patient is unparalleled. This is what drives me day in and day out to give my best. Applying a paste made of aspirin immediately removes excess oil and dead skin. In other words, it helps to unclog and dry out your angry pores, while simultaneously reducing swelling and redness. It’s one of the home remedies that dermatologists recommend, and it even helps reduce pain at the application site. To make the paste, crush an aspirin with a spoon and swirl it with a few drops of water. Then apply it directly to the pimple.

DR. SRAVYA TIPIRNENI, Dermatologist An acne patch is about the closest thing that you can get to a vacuum for acne. It protects the blemishes from dirt and other contaminants while absorbing secretion. The patch doesn’t heal your acne overnight. However, it facilitates the process of healing by speeding up the process and even prevent scarring. To use acne patches, clean and moisturize your face as normal. Then apply the sticker to your pimple and wear it overnight. It’s crucial that you wear the patch for at least six hours. Then wash your face as you would during your normal morning routine.
ZOHA KHAN, Student This is a hack my mother used to use and passed it on to me and so I am passing it on to Tulip and many more as well. Tadheen is a skin ointment and is a need for every household. It is an Ayurvedic medicine which can be used by both adults and children. As a teenager having pimples was a big deal. Therefore, Mummy’s Nuska (formula) of applying “Tadheen” in the night before bed was the miracle I was waiting for and wanting. This became a night routine for me that I still follow till date for pimples. Wash your face before bed and apply the ointment on your pimples in small amounts and rub gently. There are so many amazing Tea tree oil benefits. This is one of the effective pimple hacks. I like diluting 1-2 drops of tea tree oil into a carrier oil. Before applying on your face, do a small patch test to see if there’s any skin irritation. Take a cotton round or a Q-tip and dab the diluted tea tree oil on the blemishes and leave it overnight.

Using OTC treatment like Adapalene & Benzoyl Peroxide in combination helps in drying out the pimple overnight. As tempting as it may seem, do NOT pop or squeeze the pimple just to get rid of it. This can eventually lead to scars and pits.

Breaking the myths of Covid-19 in pets
Upon hearing alarming and bizarre incidents of people abandoning their pets out of fear of contracting Covid-19. Tulip magazine decided to put these fears at bay. We interviewed Dr Jasleen Kaur, a veterinarian and owner of Allvet Pet Clinic in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. She has completed her education from Sri Venkateshwara Veterinary University, Hyderabad. She explained how Covid-19 could affect a pet and what are the necessary actions to be taken in such cases. If the pet parent has contracted Covid-19, what should be done to keep the pet safe from the virus? If anyone in the family has tested positive for covid, it is advisable to keep the pet away from him/her. If that's not possible in a single owner household, don't hug/ kiss them and try avoiding too much physical contact with them. Wash your hands thoroughly before handling your pet and wear a mask whenever near your pet. What should be the course of action if the pet has contracted Covid-19? So far, there have been hardly any documented cases of pets contracting covid-19, however, if your pet has tested positive or if you feel he is showing symptoms for the same, please isolate your pet from other pets and humans as you would for any human. Contact your vet immediately and give a detailed description of the symptoms. Your vet will advise medication accordingly. Please do not try to disinfect your pet using sanitizer or alcohol wipes. There have been no cases of pets transmitting covid to humans. What diet will boost immunity in pets? Ideally, pets maintained on a good quality dog food diet have proper immunity and do not need any additional supplements. However, if the pets are maintained on home food or a mixture of home food and pet food, immunity boosters/ supplements prescribed by a vet can be given to help your pet. How does Covid-19 affect animals different from humans? Covid-19 affecting pets is highly uncommon, unlike humans. There have been less than a handful of cases of Covid-19 in pets worldwide. Most of these cases have been mild and not life-threatening. However, if a pet does show any symptoms or tests positive, similar isolation and quarantine protocols are recommended. 54 JULY, 2021 TULIP
How can we get our pets tested? Pets showing symptoms can be tested through a simple PCR test by sending a swab sample for the same. It should be done only if your pet is showing the symptoms or if the vet suspects your pet to have Covid-19.
EXCLUSIVE |
In the case of a Covid patient at home, should the pet be kept in isolation? If anyone in the house tests positive for Covid-19, the pet should be isolated from that particular person. He/she can still be taken for small walks to carry out his usual business. You can wipe him/her down with a damp cloth or a pet wipe before and after the walk. Make sure you never use any alcohol wipes or sanitizer or human products to clean or disinfect the pet. These can be extremely harmful to their skin. What medicines have been seen to help animals with Covid-19? Currently, there is very little that has been documented when it comes to Covid-19 in pets. The knowledge on the medication that has shown to help is extremely limited. The treatment so far has mainly been symptomatic and aimed at improving the pet's overall immunity. What is your take on Covid-19 in animals? Can it be cured completely or will it leave some effects on the pet later on? Most of the pets affected with covid-19 recovered without any complications or lingering effects. Pets that tested positive for covid-19, many of them showed absolutely no symptoms and were tested only because the pet parents wanted to do the test for their satisfaction. How can we prevent Covid-19 in pets? The best way to prevent covid-19 in pets is to isolate a positive person as soon as someone tests positive and to follow all the basic prevention steps like wiping your pet down with pet wipes after taking him/her out, avoiding crowded areas unless absolutely needed and by giving your pet a good diet.

THE SHADE OF HOPE Post-Pandemic plans cheer up with the little vibrancy of hope executing in the alley of darkness
We are now living a new normal but this fact isn’t yet grasped by many of us, we are looking forward to planning things out post-pandemic. The old normal where we were worried about “hairstyles” and “lipstick shades” or “is our beard perfectly trimmed” - these are the nostalgia moment for us now, where we are worried about being vaccinated or which mask would our outfit go with! We are eager to see the smiles and hug without having to worry about any third person, yes “Covid” has been our guest for too long to be called as someone among us. Humans tend to have an emotional connection with places, situations and whatnot. Some miss the hectic routines that hustled them from office to home to a party and students miss those boring lecturers and “lets-bunk-college-today” days. Though working from home in pyjamas is a delight, we all are missing the human connection that is now limited to the virtual connection. -By Bidisha Barik 56 JULY, 2021 TULIP

Fighting the pandemic has been tough for everyone – while many of us faced the horror of tragically losing our loved ones to not being able to experience the university campus life or even graduate with our friends and silencing the will to even be happy – some of us have found happiness amidst the gloom; from life partners to babies to finding ourselves. It’s been a roller coaster of bitter-sweet emotions in the last two years. Living in the waves of guilt of all the things I’ve taken for granted – plenty of “first things” I’d love to do post-pandemic is find joy in being part of a noisy anonymous crowd. An ant in the colony. To not hold me back. Rather take that packed Zumba class. Attend a concert and dance with my friends. Or even sit in silence shoulder-to-shoulder marvelling over the cloudy view from the window of an aeroplane. I want to attend movie theatres and laugh, gasp or even yell and cry in unison. To be a part of the hug club without thinking about the consequences. Oh, and be invited to the Big Fat Hyderabadi weddings – I am a woman of culture!
Lockdowns hit entrepreneurs harder than others. It’s important to get a sense of what the team is going through and the sentiment out there. This becomes very difficult to get a hang of working remotely. So first things first, I am really looking to go back to the office and be part of the water cooler conversations with the team. Travel is the next thing on my mind. I got recently married and we have a joint Instagram account that is hungry for content! So I look forward to making great content, spending time with my colleagues, travel more with utmost safety.

The pandemic has put a serious dampener on everyone’s plans but that hasn’t stopped any of us from making plans for when things will return to normal. For starters, I can’t wait to be fully vaccinated because you can never be too safe. When the pandemic started and the world went under lockdown, I got stranded in India and have been unable to travel ever since. While things are slowly returning to a ‘new normal, certain thing such as travel is still a distant reality owing to safety and quarantine restrictions. The one thing I really, really want to do is to be able to travel back to Qatar and reunite with my husband. We’ve been apart for more than 18 months, so that’s really the first thing on my mind. Apart from that, I’ve made quite a lot of online friends in the last couple of months. And, it would be actually cool to finally hang out with them, meet them for a meal or just do fun stuff together. I would love to pursue these virtual friendships in real life too. I also started podcasting in 2020, so I shall continue making more episodes too.

The first thing I'd do after the pandemic is over? Travel all over India and meet people who I met online during the pandemic. I've made many great friends on Twitter from all over the world who I want to catch up within the real world. Once I'm done travelling India, I'll start travelling the world to meet all these amazing people from different countries, such as Istanbul, Croatia, Singapore, South Korea, Nigeria and the list goes on and on! I do plan to document my travels so I might start a YouTube channel to vlog all about it. "I hope to learn about different cultures and get to know people who can help me explore new places I have always wanted to travel the world, but for some reason, it never happened. Now I have a strong reason to and it's going to be 100X more fun now that I have hundreds of friends who look forward to spending time with me!

This pandemic has not just been mentally infuriating for us but has also changed the way we work, recreate or take a break from this perpetual farrago that’s life. The faintest possibility of a covid-free world is the only silver lining here. And the first thing I imagine myself doing is getting rid of the mask. I want to go out and give my friends a tight hug, without any fear of infection. I want to travel, and make up for all the times I couldn’t be with my family or friends because someone was affected by covid. I want to be able to enjoy a hot brew of coffee or just dance all night. I just want to remember what it meant to be carefree and alive!

The pandemic has taken over our lives for more than a year now and it has become the new normal. Classes have gone online and it’s not the same as actually going to class and attending lectures. As a fashion student, we’ve got more hands-on assignments and projects which are quite difficult to be done online. I miss going to college and learning and all those little mundane things we weren’t grateful for before the pandemic. I can’t wait for all of this to get over so I can go back to the usual life where I don’t sit and watch Netflix all day and do something productive. Going to fabric stores and looking around for different fabrics for hours is something I find therapeutic and it’s something I’m really looking forward to doing post-pandemic. I’m also planning on getting an internship under a designer so I can learn more, gain experience, and grow in the field. The pandemic has had an immense change on all our lives, but it has also made me explore other mediums such as digital art which will definitely help me hone my eye for fashion and design. I hope to practice these skills post-pandemic and take advantage of all opportunities possible.

FOCUS ON THE ARTIST’S PERCEPTION The Artistic approach towards everything blends in with the rhythm and shades of culture, passion and perspective.
The city of pearls is also inclined towards the richness of artistic culture. Hyderabad was the land where the Deccani style of painting originated in the 16th century. Since the land is rich for not just the food but the art and culture, over the years the city has created some profound artists in this city. Most of the time it is heard that “Hyderabad’s spark towards art is dull” but the artists of the city prove it wrong as we see more youngsters walking in the path of Art and literature. The thing about Hyderabadis is, we often are adventurous and the enthusiasm we have is never fading. From music, poetry, dance, painting, and all the literary art forms we’re diversely spread over every art form we can come across. We’ve come across some of the artists of the city and we interacted with them about their art forms and their way to perceive these art forms. An artist always has a unique way to look at things around us and while we spoke to them, we were enlightened by their way of perceiving things as an artist. 60 JULY, 2021 TULIP

What example are you setting for the people who look up to you?
“I always say, “If people remember me only for my artworks that would be my biggest failure.” Art is how I emote. It is only a medium for me to put together my thoughts and portray them for people to see. And if I ever find a better medium to do so, I may not create as much art as I do today. I think the real question to ask yourself is, “Why do you create art? What’s your reason?” Are you telling stories through your art? Are you trying to reflect on society through it? Or present history? Or is it just because you find it therapeutic to do art? Find out your reason first. If there was one thing that I saw in common among the so-called big artists, that is their connection with their artworks.I often see some fellow artists feeling bad about not receiving much response for their works despite their hard work. I think this can be avoided when you first believe that you are making art primarily for yourself. You are not obliged to impress anyone with your works. Remember, the only person you need to compare yourself with is you from yesterday and nobody else.”

Being an artist, how does your perspective have an impact?
“Being an artist, you look at the world with a different story and perspective. You learn to see and observe things around you with an even deeper sense. I’m an Artist focusing on Meta sciences, astronomy and subjects that talk about our existence. As an artist, it makes me curious to understand how things work and what goes beyond it. Art has always helped me in understanding those things easily, it gives me clarity and makes me more observant over the things that I keep interested in, it has impacted my life in many ways, the deeper I go through the paintings, I appreciate the tiny little things that exist around me, it’s easier to express myself in paintings, and stay in touch with craziest parts of my consciousness”

How the art and culture of Hyderabad inspire artists?
“Hyderabad” being a city of Rich culture and Traditions and very well deserved to be titled as the “City of Pearls” had have and is inspiring artists all over the city, right from Charminar, the globalised symbol of Hyderabad that stands long and tall with its four minarets on the eastern banks of Musi river. The Majestic Palaces like Falaknuma and Chowmahalla are a few of the Many Historical sites that deeply impact the artists to learn the rich legacy of Hyderabad. Its unique blend of both historical Nizami culture and Modern Telugu Essence perfectly portrays the deep diversity and a unitedly strong Hyderabad. The impeccable art styles ranging from Deccani, Mughlai, Nirmal, Bidri, Madhubani and Tanjore paintings revive the inventiveness of many artists including me. Apart from this intense cultural, tribal and historical influence, Hyderabad also tends to offer a sense of serenity within the artists, like the calm of the Hussain Sagar Lake amid the chaotic and ever-busy roads. Hyderabad with its modernity also displays a variety of contemporary Art like Graffiti, Murals and Abstract sculptures and paintings. The city of Hyderabad is bliss to Artists in all its Glory as Artists tend to see not colours and shapes but values and forms which give us more insight on the visual and these inspirations stay in our head like a footprint on the sands of time.”

In the digital world, will traditional art still prevail?
, Self-taught Artist
“I think digital and traditional are just mediums, and like any form of art, the tools and techniques keep changing all the time. Certain modes of creating art may die out and newer forms would come out. These days, professionals may find digital suiting their workflow better in terms of creating art and delivering it. However, traditional tools are the most accessible to everyone (when it comes to drawing and sketching), to learn and to create. Traditional art has been around for centuries so I don’t think it will lose importance despite new forms of art and tools coming up – a traditional piece that is tangible might outlive data if not archived properly. Ultimately, I think it is up to every artist to decide which form of art they are most comfortable in learning and creating, and which gives better results for them.”

What is the role of an artist in society?
FEATURE |
“Artists don’t create the society, they reflect it.” We must see our world as it is, without a filter, just its naked self, to be better. The work an artist creates embodies emotions that help a society familiarise itself with complexities that are invisible but exist in plain sight. Art and artists capture time in a manner that stays for centuries reflecting the lies and truth of being. Artists show it as it is. Relationships, emotions, politics, every part that our life touches, are expressed through art in various forms. Artists have the power to transform the collective perception of society. They connect with a deep and uninterrupted bearing with their audience (society). Their work, be it a painting, poetry, song, act, any form of art, compels its viewer to justify or challenge their ideology/mind-set. In conclusion, artists play one of the most important roles in society. In simple words, artists are the people that shine light upon the unknown. The role of an artist is to make society aware of those elements that have not yet entered their consciousness.”

How can Art therapy help people with mental and emotional stability?
“I had learning difficulties as a child and art became the medium of self-expression. I would sit with paints and create shapes and patterns. During my adolescence I doodled all my intense lectures it not only helped me with academic pressure but also made me a stronger visual learner. Historically, art has always been therapeutic whether you love creating or simply enjoy watching it. The benefits of artistic expression go much further than relaxation. Studies show creating art stimulates the release of dopamine the ‘feel-good hormone’ basically making you happier and so Art therapy adds value in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, phobias, relationship issues and much more. It is a great way to express your emotions, feelings and find relief. The experiences in my workshops have always been beautiful. Experiences where people create colours out of all the work-life stress on canvas by letting go of their fears, thoughts and emotions. You can be anyone a complete beginner or someone who creates art to try art therapy. Once you unleash your creativity your inner artist will quickly wake up leaving you with a sense of happiness.”

How did you start on the journey of being an artist? What was your inspiration? “It was never a conscious effort that I made to commence this journey. I never even knew that it was a journey I was embarking on when I was a 5-year-old kid. I randomly started with a dirty little drawing of Popeye - The sailor man, being a 90s kid who was obsessed with Cartoon Network the whole day. Beginning with that and a few accolades from my mother, I started drawing every day not because I liked the attention but I enjoyed the process. It reached a new level when Pokémon and Beyblade made their mark in India and I never looked back after that. Eventually, I enrolled myself in an art school (JNAFAU) in Hyderabad with a lot of support from my parents for which I am grateful. My sources of inspiration have always been very diverse. It was cartoons I saw which kept me going and I get severely inspired whenever I see any passionate individual working towards what they like doing. Of course, a lot of artists I look up to motivate me daily to break new grounds and help me become a better artist than I was yesterday. It’s a journey where I keep discovering what inspires me the most and adds to the existing one. It’s limitless!”

As an artist how do you inspire your audience?
“Art is a way of self-expression and therapy to me, let’s me speak out and reach out to people and connect. For a long time, I have been sketching out my emotions on paper. My situations as a growing up kid inspire me to make art and people got connected to it. I would like to put my emotions, experiences out and let people know that they are not alone; we are all in this fighting and standing strong. One of the works that had made an impact is my ‘MOVE ON’ doodle. I believe art has the power to be a voice of many for many.”

After a 10 year stint in Corporate, she switched her full-time career to fitness at the age of 32 and since then there has been no looking back. It’s been 6 years that she has been working with people to make them fitter and to fall in love with themselves a little more. She is a Lead Coach at Cult fit and in love with what she does. Answering herself to the most frequently question asked related to fitness. How and where to start with a fitness journey? Before one start, it’s important to understand and put together the goals that one wants to achieve. Whether one wants to focus on weight loss, weight gain, increase strength, improve stamina and endurance, focus on mobility and so on. Based on the goals the overall exercise regime can be planned. Exercise does much more than just facilitating weight management. For example, strength training will improve bone mass and keep joint pains at bay (because you are making the muscles around those joints stronger), Cardiovascular exercises will help to improve endurance and heart rate. I am more of a firm believer in fitness as a lifestyle. It should be an indispensable part of your life similar to eating, sleeping, education etc. If you are starting for the first time and have no clue from where to start, it’s strongly advisable to train under proper guidance. One can head to a gym or even follow a workout from home regimes. Pandemic has brought fitness on OTT / Apps platforms which makes it so much easier, affordable and doable. If nothing works, start with walking. A 10k step daily can work wonders.
How to reduce belly fat or arm or leg fat? Let me break this bubble for you. Spot reduction is a myth. It’s remotely not possible to only reduce fat from a particular body part. Weight Loss can be achieved by going on a calorie deficit diet, which is the intake must be lesser than the amount you burn. However, a calorie deficit doesn’t mean a nutrition deficit or eating less. It means eating right and wholesome. We will talk about this a little more in detail when we address the point on diet. Exercise will facilitate burning some extra calories and tone and not spot reduction. TULIP - JULY, 2021 69

Is there a way to stay motivated all the time and be regular to workouts? Motivation is indeed overrated. What one needs is consistency and discipline and understanding that you are doing this for your body. This is where you live. Often boredom and convenience are strongly related to stopping exercising. To avoid this, you should mix your workouts. Do what you enjoy. Include weight training, dance, boxing, yoga, HIIT etc. This will not only help you to overcome boredom but also avoid reaching a plateau in your fitness journey.
Will women develop a body like men if they indulge in weight training? Sounds funny but this is also something I get asked a lot while I am training people. The straight answer is NO. In fact, women should practice weight training even more than men because we lose a lot of bone density post the age of 30. Weight training will only help you with anabolicalism (the growth and mineralization of bone and increases in muscle mass). Plus, developing bulk like men is facilitated by the hormone called testosterone which is negligibly present in a woman’s body.
What role does diet play and how to avoid going off track? Diet is imperial. In fact, as cliché, as it sounds abs are truly made in the kitchen. Like mentioned before a wholesome diet is paramount in weight management and feeling good on the workout floor. Include nutritious source of calories like carbohydrates (whole wheat, brown rice, pulses, mushrooms), proteins (eggs, chicken, whey, soya, daal etc), fats ( good oil, ghee, fish, seeds, nuts, peanut butter, avocado etc), fibre & vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables. In fact, one should always incorporate these in every prime meal of the day (bf, lunch & dinner). One way is to have small and frequent meals. When you hit the supermarket, purchase only the good stuff. Do Not indulge in packaged or processed food. Cook wholesome meals at home. Fad diets will not take you anywhere. Follow that’s simple, easy and sustainable.
Often starters face post-exercise pain and muscle stiffness. How to avoid this? What is the importance of recovery in fitness? This can be tough to explain in a few sentences and recovery by itself is a vast topic. But I shall try to address this for I can’t stop talking enough about the importance of it. Firstly one needs to understand whether the soreness is a mild pain (DOMS) or muscle overuse. Soreness is not necessarily an indication of a good workout. Regular exercising doesn’t let one get sore. But if it happens, stretching or walking the next day helps release the pain. Beginner, intermediate or advanced, never miss your stretching post-workout to keep yourself sore and injury-free. Recovery is underrated. Sleep is as important as exercising, being active throughout the day and diet. One can induce active recovery on the rest days, which could be yoga or only performing the daily stretches and holding them for a prolonged period of walking. BOOKS Weird Girl Adventures
Her book is an assortment of short expositions and essays of genuine encounters of the writer, brimming with humor and reality. It’s loaded with motivation and experience as well. The book starts impeccably with some kind of a discussion with God. This confessional, yet confronting message, talks of an ideal inter-relationship between mother, and her ageing.
Three Thousand Stitches
This book will surely make you more empathetic, inspire you to do something for the society, even a small act of kindness. She talks about the meaningful impact of her work in the devadasi community, her trials and tribulations as the only female student in an engineering college and the unexpected and inspiring consequences of her father’s kindness and other incidents.
Her- A Tale of Love and Darkness
While the title comprehends a love story, it rather is the story of love. The author through the characters and the crisp prose, portrays how love is life in itself and not just a mere part of it. The book is undoubtedly more than just a love story. It incorporates the existentialist meaning of life with the twines of love to finally create the picture on top. The pages evoke an enlightenment to the readers, who are compelled to ponder upon their lives and decisions of being clung to the bygone.

TAROT | Taurus Aries Watch where you step, Aries. The monthly planetary movement undermines your ability to see clearly. Your delusions and projections may tempt you toward ill-conceived actions. Be especially careful with excessive drinking and driving. Take better care of your body.
Any difficulty or challenge that surfaces now serves as a ‘reality check” to help you know if the relationship is worth your effort. If it is, your willingness to correct problems now results in a stronger, more honest and solid relationship. If it isn’t, you can more cleanly let go of relationships now that clearly are not working. Keep what feels solid and appreciate what you have built. Be adaptable and willing to change.
Cancer Sharing intimate feelings and being nourished by the loving parts of your family help you to affirm your sense of meaning and connection. Cancer children more easily soak up the warmth of positive parenting now. Do what brings you comfort. Spend time at home, in women’s circles or at family reunions.
Leo Let go of heavy and emotional issues of late. Focus on lightening your heart with play, fun and entertainment. Think of the blessings of the sun, not the shadows.
Gemini Gemini, use your best asset this month—your mind. This month’s planetary action helps your mind to perceive from greater depth, allowing you to understand root causes and unseen patterns beneath the surface. Use your mind. Tackle complex intellectual problems. Study with undistracted focus. Present your ideas to others as your words have genuine persuasive power.
Virgo Set new terms and make adjustments now. Homelife works better with a dose of structure and consistency. Take a strong stand and follow through. Strengthen families with renewed support.
Libra Long work hours and duties may result in disappointing partners, friends or children. This time will pass and your life can then return to better balance. Better to not promise what you likely cannot deliver. Try to not feel guilty (or manipulated into feeling guilty) about a situation out of your control. If you can work with focus and concentration, you may still be able to free up time to spend with those who want your attention.
Scorpio If you are ready to make a commitment, this may be the time to take a deep breath, fix on your goal and begin. Careful preparation now augurs success in the future. Move toward your goal by getting support from others, especially from those in authority. Call in favors to advance your cause. As most successful business depends on who you know, ask now for introductions.
Capricorn
Aquarius
Hard rock is dissolved by water. The hard rock of your serious Capricorn nature can be softened now through the sensitive, compassionate influence of up to seven planets in water signs this month. If you have a tough reputation or serious demeanor, you benefit by softening your professional façade and allowing others to see you as human. Take off your game
At times there are seven planets transiting water signs, not a comfortable atmosphere for detached and intellectual Aquarians. Others may perceive you as cold, aloof and insensitive. Children or pets are more moody, demanding or needy. Listen to and respond to the needs of others. Try to respond compassionately, not intellectually. Wade through the waters.
Sagittarius Your natural enthusiasm and joy of life gain you friends and creates positive new circumstances now. As your timing is good, either ask for favors or do them. Open new doors. Extend yourself on a friend’s behalf, as it is effortless for you and may make a big difference for them. Make a positive first impression. Advance with the aid of mentors. Spread your sunny Sagittarian spirit.
Pisces Protect yourself and your aura by staying clear of large gatherings of people this month. Try this yogic psychic protection technique: Imagine a pinpoint of spiritual light above your head. In your mind’s eye, envision a filament of light spinning a cocoon of protection around you. Imagine the cocoon weaving itself to a point below your feet.
