Festive Home Decor Every year the festive season allows us to bring our favourite glittery and shiny items out into the open which are otherwise shoved back inside the closet. Sometimes we get too excited while decorating our houses and end up making irreversible mistakes such as painting two unpleasant loud colours side by side. Don’t worry about your decor because we got you covered. We took some renowned interior designers from the city to give their expert opinion. By Umera Riyaz 22 NOVEMBER, 2021 TULIP

INTERIOR | We have

Vasundhara Sampath

,

an Interior designer at the Phylosophy design studio. She has done some remarkable work around the city. We asked for expert advice for decorating a home for the festive season.

Dos for festive home decor: 1. Rangolis can cheer up any space. They needn’t be restricted to just the entrance. You can add it in the corners of your house and place an urli on it. Make sure to use pretty colours like vermillion red and turmeric yellow. 2. Marigold flowers also called ‘herb of the sun’ brightens the home with their vibrant yellow and orange shades. Use them as a beautiful toran along with mango leaves for your entryway and table arrangements, sprinkle petals on your floral rangoli, or float them in an urli with tea light candles. 3. The most obvious way to decorate is with lots of twinkling lights and diyas. Brass oil lamps, earthenware diyas, tea light candles, fairy lights and paper lanterns- you can never have too many of them.

4. It's time to bring out those beautiful brocade throws and silk cushions in jewel tones like ruby reds and emerald greens. It’s the perfect time to bring out the zari and the sequinned designs too. 5. A vital part of Diwali decoration is fragrance. I vividly recall childhood memories of various scents wafting through my home. Sambrani/ incense sticks/ dhoop/ diffusers with essential oils mixed in the air are some which are unforgettable memory. It plays a huge role in bringing the theme of your decor together.

TULIP - NOVEMBER, 2021 23

| INTERIOR

Don’ts for festive home decor: 1. Do not use low quality toxic Rangoli colours, they can easily stain your floors. 2. Don’t leave any candles or diyas unattended. Placement is crucial; they should not be placed near curtains and wooden furniture. 3. Do not invest in low-quality fairy lights. Please buy lights of good quality to avoid any short circuit issues.

4. Do not end up with a loud and garish decor. Make sure the colours and material complement the decor for an elegant look. Similarly, make sure the fragrances used to complement each other and do not overwhelm your senses. 5. Do not use plastic flowers and leaves for decorating your space. There’s nothing prettier than the gorgeous marigolds and the sweet scent of roses to enhance the decor.

24 NOVEMBER, 2021 TULIP

INTERIOR | Then we have

Vishal Parwal

, an interior

designer and owner of Virat Interiors. He has designed many houses across the city and has shared his expertise with us.

Dos for festive home decor: 1. Use bright colours while decorating your house. It gives a spacious look to the room.

2. Try to add some digital items to your home. You can have digital door locks, clocks and moving picture frames. This brings a luxurious look to your space with a hint of modernity. 3. Other than diyas and candles bring home LED and COB lights. They play a huge role in lifting up the space. 4. A lot of people like to buy new furniture and appliances before the festival. Make sure the colours of these items match your rooms and also take a measurement of the space to check if the piece can fit into your room.

5. Only buy washable cloth for your curtains, cushions and sofas. This helps you to use the items as many times as you like without the worry of it getting dusty. TULIP - NOVEMBER, 2021 25

| INTERIOR

Don’ts for festive home decor: 1. Do not go for dark colours during a festival. It dulls out the rest of the decor and affects your mood too.

2. Do not install tube lights and panel lights. 3. Do not have oversized furniture. It takes up the open space of the room and gives it a congested look. 4. Do not buy fabric that cannot be washed.

Gifting, I think, is one of the most authentic ways to shower your loved ones with a little extra love. There are a few feelings and emotions, you can't put into words and that's when gifting comes to the rescue because what better way than to give your best friend that office theme T-shirt after they've had a tough week or give your mom that sari she's been eyeing but just won't buy. I always customize every present I'm giving someone. It just adds a little intimate feeling, in my opinion, one of my go-to for gift ideas would be Pinterest. We can all agree that that's 1 place that never disappoints. When it comes to gifting something like clothes or that sort, I choose brands like H&M and Urbanic. Recently, I started ordering from various small businesses on Instagram. They provide customization at affordable prices and their products are minimal yet classy 1st stop that's something I always look for. Gifting is in its way a love language.

For me, gifting is more than just giving a gift or demonstrating your feelings, it is actually a way to invest in a relationship. In essence, it is a social lubricant, a way to celebrate life, love and friendship and become a better partner, spouse, friend and person. Gifting to me is special, to be able to make something personalized and handcrafted for the person you given it to is all that matters to me. To receive a gift that has been made with thought and effort is more likely to win my heart than receiving something that is just being given for the sake of it.

ALEKHYA

The whole idea of receiving gifts is quite special to me. I believe that gifts reflect the depth of the relationship you share the kind of effort and attention one is likely to put. The gift can be anything but the gifts which are handmade, thoughtful and have given extra effort are much more precious than the expensive ones.

, Student

Surprising my loved ones with gifts has got to be my favourite thing to do. I have always believed that gifts represent a token of appreciation for that person and in a way shows how much I get! I like to go out of my way to make my people smile! I think no Think no matter how materialistic things you give someone, it should always include a personal touch because the best gifts come from the heart and not the store. What I usually do is make sure that whatever gift I am giving is unique to them. A gift should feel and be personal. I think a gift symbolizes how we pay attention to the minute details a person desires. My go-to gifting idea has got to do with making a little frame out of cardboard, ivory sheets, paint and an acute memory that captures the whole essence of my gift! I laughed to get creative with these ideas. My go-to gift store is Miniso. A little note is mandatory when I give someone something. Words have a way to people's hearts and choosing the right words with the right gift makes a heart melt! To me, choosing a gift becomes an adventure because I put a lot of thought into it. A thoughtful gift is what makes the receiver believe the love and devotion portrayed towards them.

Diwali 2021: Hyderabadi’s & their Glamorous Celebrations! Diwali – it is that time of the year when we don our jazziest outfits and pull out our sparkly shoes to enjoy the grand celebrations with our near and dears. The festive season seems to be a time when everything else takes a backseat and spending time with your loved ones comes into focus. We decided to leverage this very sentiment and interviewed different families from the city asking them about their celebration style. Read along to know all about their unique festive tales! - By Masooma Fatima 42 NOVEMBER, 2021 TULIP

COVER STORY |

Neerja Kona with her son Ansh 1. Which is your most memorable Diwali to date? It has to be the last Diwali of the year 2020. I and Ansh started putting Rangoli in front of the house….thought of doing something simple but one thing lead to another. We ended up doing these really intricate designs and had so much fun filling them with different colours and flowers. We went on to decorate our whole place with flowers and Diya’s - which me and his hand-painted. And that evening all of us got together and cooked a great meal at home, all in all, it was a day well spent with my family. I got to wish my friends and it was such a lovely day filled with great memories. 2. What’s your ootn or ootd for the day? It’s usually something simple. I prefer Chanderi or cotton sarees or kurtas. I love jumkas and it definitely is my go-to accessory to up the festive quotient for the day. 3. What is the most lovable thing about Diwali? I think the best part about our Indian culture and our festivals is that it’s one day that everyone automatically gets into a happier mood. We are all in a festive spirit and the bonds between family and friends seem so much stronger. I have always loved festival mornings. The smell of amazing food being cooked in the kitchen to the floral decorations of the puja mandir. It’s just such a happy time. 4. What are your favourite firecrackers? I am so not a firecracker person! Although I love to watch fireworks shows sometimes but have never been much into bursting crackers. I remember as a kid loving those black snake tablets that when set on fire you can see the “snake”. Ansh on the other hand loves his crackers, he loves rockets and Lakshmi bombs and ladees. 5. How is a typical day like at your house? My mother in law usually is the first one up prepping the puja mandir and getting things ready in the kitchen. We all usually are up quite early and try to pitch in as much as we can. I love getting Ansh ready and we usually video call our cousins and friends to wish them. Once the puja is done it’s just a day spent being around the living room with lots of food to go around. By the evening ideally, we would have been done decorating the house and getting ready to light the Diya’s. I prefer a cracker free Diwali but Ansh is a bit too young and he really loves his crackers. So for him, we usually bring a few crackers and the boys have their fun time. And we are onto a nice family dinner and end the day watching a movie. 6. What according to you are the best places to shop for Diwali special outfits? I love shopping online. Loom and Jaypore are my go-to sites. But in Hyderabad, I usually shop at Ritu Kumar, Fab India, Nicobar or Anonym. 7. Are Diwali celebrations this year going to be any different due to the pandemic? The pandemic has taught all of us to be more receptive to one another I feel spending time with each other has become that much more important. Like I said festival time at home is a time to bring all of us together. I am looking forward to doing the same this year with Ansh, getting some Diya’s to paint and spending time decorating the house with simple flowers and lights. And lots of food!

The Hindocha Family 1. Which is your most memorable Diwali to date? It has to be the Diwali from my childhood, those days were so different. Everyone used to dress up completely in traditional whether men, women or kids. The Poojas, the crackers, the family Getogethers and the shopping.. everything was so much fun. I remember preparations used to begin even before Dussehra in terms of cleaning and preparing snacks and sweets. I miss all those traditional delicacies which my grandmother used to prepare for Diwali, now we’ve become so healthconscious that we can’t afford to eat those. However, these small things bring out the true essence of the festival. 2. What’s your ootn or ootd for the day? For Diwali it’s always a Saree, we have poojas back to back from Dhanteras till Diwali day. At home and at our place of work. So it’s bandhini or Banarasi sarees. 3. What is the most lovable thing about Diwali? I love how it brings friends and family together. At this age, we’ve gotten so busy and engrossed in the cycle of life that we’ve forgotten the importance of family & friends. Social Media has taken the place of these important people in our lives, but the personal touch can never be replaced. I always cherish the moments with family when there are no gadgets and everyone is having pure fun. 4. What are your favourite firecrackers? I love the Anar, it’s just beautiful. Love its colours! 5. How is a typical day like at the Hindocha house? Every year, on Diwali day the first thing we do is a Pooja at home. We make Undhiyu which is a traditional curry item made with lots of vegetables and mixed flavours. It is Followed by making calls to our distant relatives to wish and seek blessings from them. Later on, we get ready for the Pooja at our store. The day ends with bursting a few firecrackers and a Family Dinner. For us Gujaratis, the New year falls on the next day of Diwali and it is of utmost importance. We make Godpapdi on this day which is a sweet item made out of wheat flour, Jaggery and Ghee. Then we set off to meet all our relatives in town and seek their blessings. Usually, the younger ones go to the elder’s house and the entire day passes by meeting all family members. Diwali for us is not just one day, it’s spread across two months. Pre and post, owing to hectic work schedules everyone plans dinner at their residence only on weekends. So we literally have our calendars marked for every weekend. Sometimes it’s my in-laws, some times my paternal family, some times our friends so it’s a lot of fun around this time. 6. What according to you are the best places to shop for Diwali special outfits? There’s a new store recently opened by the name Ohana, it’s a great place for Fusion and Designer garments. For Sarees, Mandir is a wonderful store and for Men’s wear, it’s none other than Tejas Harish. 7. Are Diwali celebrations this year going to be any different due to the pandemic? I don’t think so, with the successful vaccination drive, there’s more confidence and less fear in people. It won’t have much effect on the Diwali Celebrations as the last year was dull, this I am sure everyone would like the celebrate their hearts out. However, I request to keep smaller gatherings just to be the safer side. 48 NOVEMBER, 2021 TULIP

SHOPPING PARADISE:

CHARMINAR

Shopping can never get boring and in the city of nizams, the everlasting aura of shopping at Charminar remains a classic for most fashion enthusiasts. The beauty of Charminar isn’t just about the phenomenal architecture curated to cherish through generations, but the monument is a true sign of hospitality, elegance and a versatile introduction to the world of shopping. Dubbed the Arc de Triomphe of the east and Hyderabad’s most iconic structure, Charminar, was built to mark the eradication of the epidemic cholera that had ravaged the city in the 16th century. Lying on the east bank of the Musi river with the Laad Bazaar to its west and Makkah Masjid to the south-west, Charminar is a cultural and historical landmark that translates into four minars or pillars in Urdu. The area around the monument is also referred to as Charminar, and for a first-timer, a tour of the Nizam city is incomplete without taking in the infectious energy of the place where it all began. Albeit traffic-ridden, the bazaars are still chaotic with their labyrinthine by-lanes heaving with hawkers, bangle sellers and food stalls. 58 NOVEMBER, 2021 TULIP

Charminar is one of my favourite shopping places. one of the main reasons I go to Charminar is for its jewellery, you can find beautiful designs of jewellery right near the hawkers and pedlars for the most reasonable prices. Another favourite part about it is that you can find heavy designed ghagras and lehengas for absolutely reasonable prices. If you compare the prices with any boutique, you will crack a better deal at Charminar.

Aishwarya Endla, Employee

Nothing says Charminar and old city better than a pair of shararas and pearls. So Charminar is where my design journey began. Whenever we used to visit Hyderabad my mother would take me with her to shop for fabrics so we could design our ethnic wear. And I remember spending hours and hours walking around stores selecting everything from laces and borders to matching bangles for my outfits. And the streets of Charminar, just scream inspiration to me, the colours, the lighting, just every corner has a personality of its own! My favourite is Madina market, I can spend hours shopping (even window shopping) for fabrics there. And choose Bazar, like do I even have to describe this? One can just stare at these streets and never get bored.

Bhumija, Student

Charminar is a beautiful place indeed but for a shopping fanatic like me, the laad bazaar has to be my forever favourite. The beauty of the place, the crowd, the vibe, the colours and the lights just make my whole shopping experience so much fun. The designs and prices are commendable. Do check out shopping at Charminar. It's worth it.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Common breast cancer myths busted - By Masooma Fatima 74 NOVEMBER, 2021 TULIP

HEALTH | Tulip Magazine focuses on some of the most common misunderstandings associated with breast cancer. We have also

Dr Crystal Fancher

enlisted , a surgical breast Oncologist to help us clear all myths associated with Breast Cancer. 1. Can a breast injury cause breast cancer? Injury to the breast cannot cause breast cancer, however, it can cause changes in the breast that may mimic breast cancer on imaging. The best way to distinguish cancer from fat necrosis is with a needle biopsy. 2. Can underwire bras increase the risk of breast cancer? The wire can irritate the skin under the breast, which can lead to skin breakdown. This breakdown may allow bacteria to enter the breast causing infection, [an] abscess. Although underwire bras do not increase breast cancer risk, I always recommend bras without a wire. 3. No one in my family had breast cancer, so is it possible that even I won’t develop it? It is very common for [people] with a new breast cancer diagnosis to tell me how shocked they are considering that they have no family history. Because family history is only one factor in the risk of breast cancer, screening is important. If you are a woman and at least 40 years old, please get your screening mammograms! 4. Can stress cause Breast Cancer? With the ever-present stresses of modern life, it is no surprise that people are concerned about how stress might impact health. There is absolutely no evidence to support a link between stress and breast cancer. In fact, there is evidence to support that stress does not increase breast cancer risk. Part of being human is finding effective ways to deal with the stress we all will inevitably face. This can have profound health benefits both mentally and physically but will do nothing to mitigate breast cancer risk. 5. Does Breast Cancer only happen to older adults? While it is true that breast cancer risk increases as women age and the average age of a new breast cancer diagnosis are 61 years, breast cancer can occur much earlier. About 5% of new breast cancer diagnoses are in women under the age of 40 years. There, unfortunately, have been reports of women in their early 20s and even teens who were diagnosed. 6. Does carrying a phone in your bra can cause cancer? There is no evidence to support that cell phones cause cancer, period. “However, we do not have any long-term studies, so we may find this to be the case in the future. For now, why can’t you just put your phone in your pocket or bag?” 7. Do Nipple piercings increase breast cancer risk? This is clearly a myth. nipple piercings do not increase breast cancer risk. However, they can lead to complications, such as infection, abscess, difficulty breastfeeding due to blocked ducts from scar tissue, nerve damage, keloids, cysts, and more rare but serious illness from HIV and hepatitis B and C.” 8. Does Sugar Cause Breast Cancer? Too much sugar can result in obesity, which is a risk factor for breast cancer. Studies investigating links between sugar and breast cancer have been “mixed and inconsistent. While discussing sugar, it is worth busting a related myth: that sugar helps tumours grow. This myth arose because cancer cells divide rapidly and, therefore, need a lot of energy. 9. Can men get breast cancer? Men have breasts. So yes, they too get breast cancer. While breast cancer is more common in women than men, there are still men who get breast cancer. It’s important for men also to be aware of any changes in their breasts since there are no recommended screening guidelines for men. 10. If there is no lump, there is no cancer. Is this true? If this were true, then we would not need mammograms. Many breast cancers are found on screening mammograms and may not be felt. This is especially true for noninvasive breast cancer which may only show up as calcifications on a screening mammogram.
