SAMANTHA AKKINENI

INTERIORS |

Samantha Akkineni’s backyard is the perfect blend of modern and classic aesthetics, with the colour white taking control of the space. You’ll spot a patch of grass with comfortable lounge chairs in one corner, and a large collection of potted white plants spread all over this outdoor area. Samantha recently spoke about her newfound hobby, besides her work, and it’s gardening! She has been posting pictures of vegetables that she has been growing during the pandemic. The rows and rows of lush plants, the complete greenery is a serene view to admire. The vegetables she grows in her terrace garden are all Organic, completely free of any adulteration. Samantha calls her garden her “Happy Place”, and her radiating smile sure proves that!

SOHA ALI KHAN

Soha’s home is a perfect mix of Art Deco and Luxury.Designed by DarshiniShah, the house is characterized by raw brick walls and wooden panelling that gives a vintage feel to it. It’s her cost Den, that we loved the most! The den is designed in a way that you can chill, watch movies, put your feet up and unwind. With its rows and rows of books, the den proves Soha’s love for reading, and the corridor that leads to it is a visual testimony to her passion for art. There was something about wooden tones, soft cushions and books that made us book lovers squeal in excitement! TULIP - OCTOBER, 2020 9

CHRISSY TEIGEN

If you’ve followed Chrissy Teigen on her social media accounts, you cannot miss her love for cooking and culinary skills! Living on a beach house, that’s been designed by Don Stewart, she has been whipping up some amazing dishes in her modular and elegant kitchen. The wooden cupboards and pantry, along with a granite countertop, with a view overlooking the ocean, makes it a perfect place to cook and spend some quality time with family. What we loved the most was how utilitarian the kitchen was. Chrissy has even attached a toy kitchen beside the granite countertop, so as to keep her children close and entertained.

KANGANA RANAUT

Kangana’s new Pali Hill studio is the Talk of the Town! The actress along with celebrity designer Shabnam Gupta have worked on what can be called as a ‘dreamy workspace.’Her eclectic workspace looks magnificent with a touch of European style. Kangana has got most of her studio’s furniture customized and handmade. The open-to-sky cafe takes the cake! The rays of sunlight beaming through the windows make this cabin such a refreshing place to work at. The room is used as her storyboard where the she can sit and read her scripts. Textured white walls, solid wood table, pastel coloured furniture, all come together to create a grunge effect on the room. 10 OCTOBER, 2020 TULIP

KIM KARDASHIAN

INTERIORS |

Kim Kardashian has a closet for Everything (and we mean EVERYTHING), but her Shoe Closet is a sight to behold! Designed by Axel Vervoordt, another angle of the closet shows that it clearly doubles as a fitting room with enough space for at least two wheeled in clothing racks. The walk-in closet is completely dedicated to an array of designer shoes and bags from heavyweight brands like Hermes, Fendi and Kardashianfavourite Judith Leiber. It also features a room sized mirror at the end. This Room is a Dream!

POOJA BEDI

Pooja Bedi, recently redecorated her home back in Goa, and it has some classy and vintage features. The heat of the home is her living room. The room is set in ivory, steel and wood dominated interior. The huge mirror piece with metallic framework, makes the room look bigger and elegant. The dining table and the furniture are light in colour, adding class to the room. The furniture is mostly wooden with white wallpaper and tile that can be seen in most Goan houses. KAJAL AGARWAL

Kajal recently gave a tour of her renovated childhood home, in Mumbai, designed by her, and we are extremely impressed with the minimalistic design. The home, though look barely furnished, speaks volumes of quality rather than quantity. Her office space is so aesthetically pleasing, that it’s our favourite spot around the house. It has her own library, and is furnished with a grey cushioned chair and few wooden chairs, but it’s the custom made Jaipur rug that catches your eye immediately. Contrast to the white walls and flooring, the rug is vibrant, yet blends well with the aesthetics. The spot looks soothing and calms any unsettled mind.

OPRAH WINFREY

Oprah owns a 5,500 sq.yds., ranch-style farmhouse in Montecito. The place has a big mansion, pool, top-of-the line stables, caretaker’s cabins, an equestrian ring and fruit orchards. But it’s the quaint little Tea House that caught our attention. Though the rest of the mansion was designed by architect Cliff May in 1955, the Tea House has been decorated and designed by Oprah herself. Set in the midst of the garden, the building’s entrance is arched by wisteria, with an elegant copper fountain out front. Every little detail, inside and out, of the Tea House has been selected by Oprah, including what type of gravel lined it’s path. There is no television or a way to listen to music, hence it’s an ideal place to meditate and drink tea in peace. The furniture is all wicker chairs and a soft cushioned wicker couch, which make the view from here even more dreamy and mystic. The warm and vintage vibes we get from this place are unmatched for! 12 OCTOBER, 2020 TULIP

Freshly Brewed For Hyderabad

World Coffee Day 2020 Don’t we love the smell of freshly filtered coffee, the sound of the coffee beans grinding together, the warm brown colour and the beautiful heart with cream on it? A rainy day, a good book and the right coffee are the perfect partners. Coffee was discovered in the 15th Century in the Arabian Peninsula. It was grown in a Yemeni district. By the 16th Century, it then went by Persia, Egypt, Syria and Turkey. Coffee was popularised not just at homes but public places dedicated to them called Qahveh Khaneh modernday cafes. Coffee was accompanied by chatter, a game of chess, and music. As thousands of people visited Makkah every year for Pilgrimage (Hajj) the so-called wine of Arabia went viral throughout the globe. Coffee travelled to Europe in the 17th Century, although coffee was praised in the New East, things weren’t the same for coffee in Europe. People called it “Bitter invention of Satan”. The controversy went so out of hands that the pope had to intervene. He decided to try the beverage for himself and called out a judgement, he found it so piquant and approved for people to drink it. Soon coffee houses became the new attraction points across England, Austria, France, Germany and Holland. Coffee quickly replaced the morning drinks like beer and wine, people who drank coffee performed with better work quality than those who drank wine and beer. Dutch soon decided to step in on the trade for coffee and failed miserably until they cultivated coffee in Indonesia. Slowly coffee grew throughout the globe and was the drink of the majority. Even today coffee is one of the most ordered and consumed beverages. Just like Indian fathers have ginger, millennials have coffee to cure it all. No matter what the problem is; coffee is your solution, bursting with migraines, have a coffee. Have trouble sleeping, drink coffee. Coffee is best with the desired ambience; it goes well with anything, a starry night, a light night drive, first date. Since we are talking about coffee and ambience, here are Hyderabad’s most loved coffee houses and cafes; brewing and serving the best. TULIP - OCTOBER, 2020 - By Umera Riyaz

CUISINE | I start work with a cup of coffee; I can’t imagine a meeting or call without having it. My meetings are long, I require a lot of energy to keep myself active, and a David off Rich/Fine Aroma does the morning job for me by boosting my mood instantly and making things better. There are other benefits of coffee like improving cognitive functions, reducing anxiety or stress, boosting metabolism etc. My evening brews change every day, a hazelnut cappuccino, or a classic Americano. I love brewing different coffees just like I wear different socks, a Classic Cascara, Malabar and Ethiopian Harrar, I add required beans in my French press and love to experiment on various combinations. Rahul Kanuganti - CEO-FLYTTA

Well, I’m a morning person, and I love to start my day with a freshly brewed cup of coffee. The main reason behind a cup of coffee in the early hours of the day is the instant energy boost; It helps and enhances my workout. It also refreshes my brain and gets it ready for the big day ahead. Now being a college student I leave everything for the last minute hence leading to staying up at nights and completing projects, assignments. Being an early bird, the only thing that keeps me up is caffeine. That’s the role coffee plays in this engineering student’s daily life. Mohammed Ahad khan, An engineering student at JNTUH

Coffee; let’s call it the love of my life. Everything from its aroma, to its taste, needless I say, I’m emotionally invested in coffee. You know when you love something to an extent that life seems impossible without it, there it is. That’s what coffee is to me. Besides, you know what to have when you’re exhausted from work and need a refresher. Coffee makes me happy and it’s a genuine feeling. I’ll probably just start my coffee business someday. Your day’s good when your coffee is good. It’s a fact. Subhana Ahsan - Student

For me coffee is no longer instant, loaded with ice cream, creamer or toppings and I discovered this undying love for strong unsweetened artisanal coffee only 4-5 years ago when I became lactose intolerant. I was residing in Bombay and Bangalore back then and I got hooked to the third wave of coffee. I couldn’t get myself to quit it and started enjoying it over long conversations because you cannot just gulp down an artisanal coffee, without inhaling the aroma of different estates, the notes filled with chocolate, honey, etc. It awakens your senses. I have learnt about different waves of coffee, the brewing methods, etc during my work experience with Roastery Coffee House and my go-to brewing methods at home would be using a French Press and Moka Pot. At a coffee house, I always go for a cold brew, pour-over or a strong cappuccino. Fun fact, I can never stay up with a cup of coffee, I fall asleep instead. Megha Beria - Product Designer/ Freelance Visual designer and content creator TULIP - OCTOBER, 2020 17

Temple jewelery/ jewelery with intricate designs, kajal , bindi/sindoor, voluminous hairstyles are a must if you are trying for a complete traditional look.

Don’t discard you’re faded clothes Let’s make this world eco-friendly by re-dyeing them. We may get bored with using the same T-shirts after some time. Make it look completely different giving it a new color and re-style them in just 100-150 bucks. Keep an eye on fashion trends & channel yourself with research on the forecast and be experimental because none of us wants to repeat the same style or copy others, your style needs to be unique or trendy to afloat the group. Always Choose Vertical stripes to make you look taller; plus-sized women, these create an illusion and make you look slimmer. It’s always the better choice out of the two. Looking for an easy trick to make your bare legs look longer? Try pumps the same color of your skin, which gives the illusion that your legs extend a few extra inches. V-neck sweaters and tees give the illusion of a longer torso. Ideally, a pencil skirt should hit just at the top of your knee. Any lower and it will start to shorten your leg. Repurpose old or thrift sweaters and blankets by using them to reupholster a throw pillow, a chair seat or cover a stool.

Bohemian Style Well, the boho look consists of a lot of wild and intricate patterns and exotic textures. The Boho chic or Bohemian style is made of summer, casual, modern, and stylish outfits. It takes inspiration from various free spirits, bohemian, and hippie influences, with colorful, natural, and handcrafted clothes. This kind of look makes you look quite a hippie and gipsy and that is what it stands for. The classic bohemian look has always been a standout thing and is kind of every girl’s favourite as the focus is on chains, fringes, and other eye-catching accessories.

Sexy Style This is a way of dressing where you show a lot of skin and get lots and lots of eyeballs at you. You look sensual and hot. In this style of fashion, you wear clothes to accentuate your figure and highlight your bodily assets in the best possible way. You can even experiment by draping a piece of fabric in different styles using safety pins and belts or can be knotted to secure them. But this is the type of fashion which is not every woman’s cup of tea. You got a lot of guts to pull off this one.

Resort/Beach Style Resort wear definition for women, cruise attire or vacation wear wardrobe is becoming a common term used for clothes, dresses or looks one wears when one is on a holiday or a vacation at a resort or cruise. resort wear refers to and includes relaxed sometimes brightly colored and beautiful tropical patterned tops, animal prints, shorts, capris, pants, dresses, skirts, coverups, swimwear, big tote bags and more.

The Soulful Essence of Art and Artists

Art has been around for more than we can ever imagine the first painting made is 40,000 years old according to historians. Art is the reason our world is the way it is. Can you imagine a world with colours? We would literally be living a black and white life. Art has always been to interpretation, but today art has opened its arms to the different creative fields present. Art includes any that is artistic and not aesthetic. It’s quite difficult to differentiate between the two as they look very familiar but art is anything that is creative yet holds a deeper meaning or symbolizes something. An idea out of the book is called creative and when creativity is put into action we call it art. But art isn’t just thinking and digging deeper meaning. Art is quite personal for a certain artist as they try to depict their own feelings and emotions through it, hence art is more than just a piece for pleasure. This doesn’t mean art isn’t made just for fun or for its beauty. Art is known for great therapy for people dealing with anxiety, mood swings, stress and depression. Art is also known to develop and enhance skills like problem-solving and making us more observant than absent-minded. It is also an amazing stress burster great for people working a rigid schedule to unlock themselves. Art helps oneself to feel more confident and accomplished and also build good self-esteem. Children and adults both should take time to enjoy art as they like. Art plays an integral part in our well being and society, it is important that we include it in any form that we prefer and enjoy. It’s time to encourage and embrace art and creativity as much as applaud desk jobs, neither is better or worse, both are equally important for a society to run. It is time to accept art and artists as equal professionals in their respective fields. We have found some hidden gems of Hyderabad: - By Umera Riyaz

Nawal - Calligrapher and Resin artist A 21-year-old PharmD student but this is the story of how I became an artist and an entrepreneur. I started learning Arabic calligraphy (khatt) around 5 years ago, while I was in high school in Saudi Arabia. I couldn’t continue practising it later as I shifted to India for further studies. Two years ago, I resumed my practice and fell in love with the language and its letters. The works of other famous calligraphy artists inspired me to get better at what I do. I wanted to share my art with the world. I started posting my art on Instagram. (@calligraphybynawal) Most artists in our country don’t get the appreciation they deserve. I want to tell all those artists out there always know your worth, and believe in yourself! My family and friends always supported me, shared my work and helped my page to grow. A few months later, I started receiving orders, And I thank the almighty for it. Last year, I designed my line of calligraphy mugs, phone cases and many other customised products. I also teach and share the love of Arabic calligraphy with people around the world through online classes. It’s not always easy to balance work with college but I’ve learned to manage both. The love and appreciation keep me going! What are you working on now? I’ve been practising Copperplate calligraphy and Resin art as well.

I have been passionate about drawing since childhood, and have been publishing my artwork online from the late 1990s. Since I am a movie buff, much of my artwork is inspired by movies. I mostly draw portraits and my primary tools are pencil and ballpoint pens for my art. I’ve been very active on Instagram (@karthikabhiram) since 2013 where I post my art and photography daily. I’ve also exhibited my work in different forums over the last few years. What is Daily Movie Sketch? In April 2016, I started a Daily Movie Sketch project for regular movie sketches, and I’ve done 550 sketches so far as part of it. “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Amrutha Routhu - Mandala Artist I am a Software Engineer by profession and an artist by passion. My artworks include Mandalas, Zentangles and doodles. I love experimenting with different forms of art which led me to learn watercolour and acrylic painting. I think of ways to mix different mediums with mandalas being my primary art form. My interest in patterns helped me discover this art five years ago. And the constant practice to make sure that the designs are perfect gradually gained a lot of appreciation. I also conducted workshops and displayed my art in a few exhibitions. My online workshops in recent times received a huge response. A merchandise line has also helped my art to reach the next level. Not just with the mandalas, I use the patterns to create animal art which was the most interesting ones so far. What inspires you? What inspires me the most is trying out a new kind of work. Many artists from all around the world, whom I follow on Instagram and Pinterest inspire me. Travelling is another form of inspiration as I get to see different cultures and art forms. Sri Priyatham - Illustrator. Sketch Artist and Painter I am an illustrator. I practice classical fine art illustrations as my niche with a touch of realism and lots of depth in detail, In both traditional and digital mediums. I think I was 6 years old when I started drawing, I’ve been drawing my whole conscious life. I don’t think it was a coincidence that my mum asked me to try replicating a drawing my classmate made and this was during my 2nd standard. It was a crutch to my bad academic track. I was stuck to it once I started and I kept drawing and never stopped. How does this help you out in life? It’s more about finding a bigger purpose than minute reliefs, I think. I wouldn’t go with fancy terms like “art is a therapy” to me. But, it led me to a disciplined life, taught me to be patient, consistent and not to work for the result. The fun is all in the process, the journey. Working for a result never ends well. I can extract all elements of life from the above. Do you find art important? Absolutely. It gives a sensible perspective to life and also towards humanity. Art doesn’t necessarily need to be a profession to feel that way. Learning any performance art rewires the brain in a whole different way. It helps you question the purpose of life. Makes one more calm and relieved. So, yes, Art is essential, I’d say.

Marzia Ali - Astronomy and Resin Artist An Entrepreneur, running an art subscription box service known as “The Duende Box’. An artist focusing on teaching art and revolving my art style around Astronomy and Human mind. I’ve been into art since I was a kid; my mom always made sure to keep me in contact with the creative field. She is an artist too, and I have been watching her paint since my birth. But yes, I have developed my interest in different mediums over the years. I am a specialised artist in Resin, Alcohol inks, fluid art, watercolours and many more. I keep an interest in Interior decor and have merged my art style with interior development. I have collaborated with many brands for conducting art workshops as experiential marketing events and worked with many interior designers around the country focusing on interior decor with my art style. I also keep an interest in ceramic and pottery which has led me to introduce ceramic art supplies in my business. Who has helped you the most? Mom, dad, my family and friends are super supportive throughout my journey. And Hamad Jowher, who has always been there listening to my ideas and helping me structure them, not just this but he makes sure that it is something meaningful. How do you feel about art? I believe we live in our heads more than we do in the present moment. And art is a different world or stage where you live with who you are and in your own way. I strongly believe it’s a way to express freedom of mind and soul.

Art has been a part of my life from an incredibly young age. At some point in our life, all of us have tried to create an art masterpiece on paper through doodling, sketching or paper cutting. Chances are some turned out fantastic and some ripped apart in a matter of seconds. Six years ago while scrolling through Facebook, one day, I stumbled upon an article with all these beautiful art pieces made from paper by this UK artist. I found it fascinating and discovered the art of paper-cutting, Psaligraphy. I was intrigued by design patterns that Psaligraphy holds and how it can have different forms to express storylines. A quote that inspires you? This quote often inspires me “ If you can’t figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. She smiled, opened her wings—very white—the colour of Eve’s face when she found herself beside Adam. She looked up the treetops, took all the birds, gathered them on her knuckles and let them fly inside her sonnets. A yellow canary sat on the proud kaaf, while blue-green hummingbirds chose the zers below the consonants like seaweed floating under the bottom of boats. The sparrows chose aleph—the proud minaret—the significance of The One. She chiselled the birds into words, knowing that we are free inside our bodies the way these birds fly inside letters. Poetry has always been a way of expressing myself and writing down how I feel and when you read it out to people they hear you, I like that acknowledgement of emotion the poetry expresses on behalf of the poet. Life is constant, it keeps changing so does the emotions of a person and hence the poetry. What does poetry mean to you? Urban Farming

Urban farming, a well-received concept right now. Is, in fact, age-old and practised by our grandparents but lost to us. The idea of eating fresh produce and knowing our roots is essential, which many of us do not give thought. Urban gardening is crucial to have in urban dwellings civic centres cannot be only concrete. Urban planning is for individuals and communities to be healthy- body and mind. Here are two ardent urban farmers who are doing it right and educating us to eat holistically and live mindfully. -By Amrutha Varshini Kothapally

Sridevi Jasti is a holistic nutritionist with extended cliental includes sportspersons, doctors, actors and organic & whole foods chef by profession. She is the founder of Vibrant Living Foods. Her elaborate terrace garden is just as vibrant.

also teaches life lessons that not everything is under our control. The life cycle of seed is so magical and makes you realise that it has so much potential just like people’s thoughts. Furthermore, artificial approach to plants makes them less nutritious. The right food is from the right soil and seed. Why is soil health important? Soil health determines your health. The health of food depends on the health of the soil. It also tastes better and provides more nourishment. The nutrients necessary for us come from the here. When soil is naturally healthy, plants are going to be naturally healthy. How can people instill the concept of respecting what they eat? Why is it important? The easiest way is by growing some microgreens and expanding from there. Growing plants give you a sense of responsibility and sense of accomplishment, especially for children. They get to know where our food originates. The concept of farm to table is not new we have always practiced this. Convenience made us ignorant. Growing food helps us realise what is desirable for you and helps us in making better choices. How can an amateur get into creating a terrace gardening? Starting slow is the key. Start with understanding soil health. I remember my time in Canada when I took up backyard gardening with sunflowers, tomatoes, broccoli, strawberry, inside and outside my house. Every moment outside of work I spent here. It was so demanding that I did not take this up the following year! People presume that growing veggies at home is expensive and demanding. Is it taxing according to you?

What is vibrant living? How would you define it? Vibrant living is mainly a food business. Holistic and whole foods that are tasty and healthy and Holistic living is what we encourage through this venture. Food alone is not a solution for good health and quality of living. Living sustainability and mindfully is what constitutes vibrant living. How can you relate urban farming to holistic living and sustainable lifestyle? Gardening is beneficial in multifold. When you grow something that you can consume, it also makes you understand life in itself. Gardening 50 OCTOBER, 2020 TULIP

It will be time taking. Starting slow and gradually will help you learn from your mistakes. It’s as much living as a human. It needs to be looked after and needs to be maintained. You have to grow them sustainability like a cycle. Creating your manure from food waste and creating an ecosystem out of it. On your page, you mention that seasonal fruits calories do not count. Why is it important to eat locally and seasonally available produce? Simply because they are tasty and you get satiated when you eat the right kind of food. You will never overeat on local and seasonal food. Also keeps cravings in check. Local produce is not artificially ripened and don’t do through transit. Food like Turmeric, ajwain, tulsi, and ginger foods that we have locally is essential for our diet. Eating whole foods and a variety of local food is the key that nature has given us.

makes it expensive. What motivates you to continue this lifestyle? Being just as excited as when I was a child to see a plant grow even today. That excitement makes me happy and inspires me to do this. Also making others just as excited is precious. What advice would you give to a budding urban terrace farmer? Start clean. Ask questions when you eat, when you buy seeds or soil. Don’t look for shortcuts, be patient and consistent. You will make mistakes and kill some plants in between. It happens. Restart learn and enjoy. The reward is immeasurable. Instagram: (@vibrantlivingbysridevijasti)

You have lived and travelled from Toronto to Florida to Tuscany and Florence, learning more and more about food. What is the vast difference do you see in the urban farming culture here and these places? Urban farming in America and Canada has community farming. Community gardening is popular culture and not very common here. This experience inspired me to create something similar here. West realised it earlier that fast food isn’t good for us. Living there got me to learn and practise it. Do you think hydroponics is a proper way to start terrace farming? If you don’t have access to soil, hydroponics is the answer. But nothing like growing in soil. It also helps in managing kitchen waste and living a zero-waste sustainable lifestyle. You don’t have to buy nourishments for your plants to grow, which TULIP - OCTOBER, 2020 51

Always start with growing greens, which are easy to grow and can be grown in any space. Honestly, microgreens are the ones that are highly polluted. Local varieties are easy to grow! They adapt to the environment around them. Thus nature is also supporting the gardener. Is growing food expensive and demanding? What is your advice on this? There are so many options we can consider to grow food. It need not be fancy. You will be surprised you can build a mini spinach farm using milk packets. We spend so much time/money to get a fancy smartphone with a good touch screen, picture quality, etc. Why not spend time to grow safe and tasty food? What’s your opinion on hydroponics to grow plants? If you have no balcony or sunny windowsill then these systems can be incredible. But personally, nothing beats being outdoors with dirt under my nails. What is the idea behind “Composting is Cool”? Hyderabad alone generates 5200 MT of trash every single day, sent to landfills. We take out our trash and feel lighter and cleaner. But at the landfill, the mixed waste is decomposing and releasing leachate that goes under polluting the groundwater and also releases methane, a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Landfill gas also contributes to smog, worsening health problems like asthma. I have heard people saying the landfill is faraway I am safe! Did you forget how fast the air travels? We are never far.

Bargavi Bijjam is an urban farmer from Hyderabad. Her terrace farm leaves you in awe and inspires you to start your own. Her enthusiasm for this subject results in her Instagram followers educated on how to grow your food organically and ethically. How did you start with your terrace farming? Where or from whom did you learn to take this up? The way I was brought up, by my parents and grandparents influenced me a lot in getting into gardening and also conscious about wastage. 2013 is when I would say I started experimenting growing food in containers and small spaces. I belong to a farming family! All my inspiration is from my roots. Facebook group called INTIPANTA organic kitchen/terrace garden also helped me to learn gardening tips and tricks with their concept of visiting homes of urban gardeners. I’m glad to be part of the core team currently. Now the group is 40k+ strong. I call myself a ‘YouTube Gardening Graduate’. What is farm to table? Why is it important for people living in cities to realise this? First off, it’s all-natural and fresh! There is nothing like biting into a fresh ripe tomato plucked from the plant. The flavour is just one of the 52 OCTOBER, 2020 TULIP

How to get into composting efficiently with limited resources? There is no hard and fast rule for composting. All we need are five things- Kitchen waste (fruit peels/veg peels/eggshells/ tea & coffee powder), Dry waste (dry Leaves, cocopeat, soil), Oxygen (for aeration), Container (a broken bucket/pot/kambha) & Microbes (butter Milk/ idly or dosa batter). It is about layering the kitchen waste and dry waste in the container. Add microbes for faster break down and mix up the pile for enough aeration as it doesn’t get compacted. If you grind the waste, the break down will be quicker and, volume-controlled. You were part of the GHMC Saaf Hyderabad Shandaar Hyderabad Campaign. What social change were you aiming to bring in people? Yes. I was a part of GHMC Saaf Hyderabad Shandaar Hyderabad campaign which discontinued now. Campaigns lead to social change. We recognized that behavioural change is critical for the adoption of solid waste management practices. Our campaigns were designed to influence and lead movements to create a large-scale adoption of practices. Campaigns softpeddle the Policy and Rules implementation through building voluntary engagement, information dissemination and largescale adoption. What is the advice you would give others who want to start urban farming? Some things are better experienced than told. Home Grown is the safest and tastiest than anything you could ever buy. Start small. Learn from your mistakes you will live a vast journey. Instagram: (@bhargavi_bijjam) TULIP - OCTOBER, 2020 53

Latha Balasundaram heads the Physiotherapy Department at Fernandez Foundation. She is also a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, Lactation Counsellor and Pelvic Floor Specialist. She has done her Master’s in Physiotherapy in Adult and PaediatricNeurology but over the years developed an interest for working in the field of Physiotherapy catering to Women’s Health and Paediatrics. In the last 13 years of her experience apart from working in the area of Adult Musculoskeletal issues and Paediatric Rehabilitation, she has treated women with various conditions experienced through Antenatal and Post-natal period. She also has worked with numerous women to maximize their chances of attempting and experiencing a normal vaginal birth. Through her work as a Pelvic Floor Specialist, she contributes to the less talked about problems that women face in their post-natal period and in older women such as pelvic organ prolapse, chronic pain and incontinence issues. Apart from being passionate about working as a Physiotherapist, she also finds her work with implementing and teaching the Lamaze curriculum for Child Birth Education classes at Fernandez Foundation and supporting new mother’s as a Lactation Specialist, very gratifying. She works passionately in multiple areas supporting women and empowering them in their journey leading to pregnancy, birth and beyond! 54 OCTOBER, 2020 TULIP

What are Lamaze childbirth classes all about? Is it fad or faff? Lamaze education is a series of classes that help women to be confident, trust their innate ability to give birth and make informed decisions about pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parenting. Its philosophy teaches that birth is normal, natural and healthy. It is a series of classes that address pregnancy birth and beyond. No matter how much we prepare and read, it always helps to have an open mind to what unfolds in its own unique way. So anything which gives you this as a take-home message is a great thing! While this focuses at a natural birth, not all will have a normal vaginal birth. Do these couples take this as a disappointment? There will be at least 10-15% of women who will have a medical or an emergency need of a Cesarean section which is beyond anyone’s control. Childbirth classes will always help in giving information about their rights and healthy birthing practices of a birthing couple. They understand if a particular outcome or action was medically necessary which can be lifesaving or was an unnecessary one. It helps a birthing couple make informed choices towards their decisions in pregnancy and birth which empowers them and allows them to have an open mind to be at peace with the unfolding of their own unique birth story irrespective of the mode of birth. This peace is essential in giving them a good head start to be confident parents. There are so many myths about pregnancy especially surrounding activity and exercises. How can you convince people about pregnancy fitness? The benefits of excising in pregnancy have been studied and researched extensively. Our lifestyle has transitioned from doing labored physical day to day work to more sedentary ones, hence making exercise a necessity for the wellbeing of a mother and child. An exercise program must be designed to work on the flexibility, strength especially of core muscles and functional fitness of moms to be. Increased blood supply to the baby and improved heart function, releasing good hormones to beat stress and anxiety, better regulation of weight gain, decreased pain in the pelvic girdle, low back, improved posture awareness, reduced risk and management of gestational diabetes and hypertension and a more positive body image as well are some of the benefits. Are there any situations where a woman is expected not to exercise or perform a specific kind of exercise regime? A woman can do any activity she is accustomed to in her pregnancy that she has always been doing but to a lesser intensity. Since the 1sttrimester is usually associated with exhaustion, nausea and vomiting it may be best to hold back exercises until then. Bleeding, low lying placenta, cervical incompetence, history of miscarriages, carrying multiples, have high blood pressure can be some of the reasons where women are said to modify or exercise with precaution, supervision and monitoring of a physical therapist. As a Physiotherapist working for women’s health, what are the problems across different age groups? Women need to give more importance to their health and not keep it on the back burner. The common issues in women range from obesity, PCOS, infertility,

where leading a healthy lifestyle with diet, exercise and mindfulness become crucial. On the other end pregnancy-related pains like pelvic girdle dysfunction, mechanical back pain due to changing posture, and hormone, frequent cramps and muscle catch. Post-pregnancy we see a large number of mom’s struggling with joint stiffness, pains, struggling to deal with weight gain, mummy tummy called diastasis recti, decrease in urinary control amongst others.

How can Physiotherapy help in cases of loss or decrease of urine control? Not just loss of control over urine but even in loss or decrease in fecal control seen post-birth following trauma or stress to the pelvic floor muscles as well as pelvic organ prolapse which is more commonly seen in the age group over 50 years. It can be a very debilitating condition creating physical and emotional trauma making even the most outgoing women prisoners of their own home. Pelvic Floor Specialists can help a long way in rehabilitation of these conditions. Helping these women use their pelvic floor muscles and core muscles appropriately, sometimes taking the help of tools and machines like an EMG biofeedback machine, electric stimulator for pelvic floor activation or kegel cones. All of these can improve the outcomes in women to a large extent and help in their wellbeing. How can painful intercourse be resolved? If painful intercourse follows a vaginal birth where there was a cut or tear then healing can cause some bands or points that can be painful. These can be worked on by simple techniques of gentle intra-pelvic pressure and scooping massage over the triggered muscles with a gloved finger or sometimes using tools like pelvic wands or vaginal dilators to relieve the same. Other conditions where these techniques can help is a chronic pelvic pain syndrome, vaginismus etc along with psychological help can also be benefitted. What role does a physiotherapist play in this Covid-19 era? It is important to understand that any infection/inflammation to the lung causes scaring and decreased lung expansion. This in turn causes an increase in the work of breathing and shortness of breath. There are lots of asymptomatic people who display mild symptoms. These people will largely need lung expansion exercises like pursed lip breathing, breath holds, intensive spirometer training, diaphragmatic breathing exercises done regularly while monitoring their oxygen saturation levels. What about the severely affected Covid patients? Severely affected people will need rehabilitation to recover from the effects of ventilation /oxygen support and prolonged bed rest. Apart from impaired lung function they may experience severe muscle weakness, joint stiffness, fatigue, limited ability to do daily tasks and psychological issues. A physiotherapist can contribute in all these areas based on a good assessment and rehabilitation program specific to the patient. How do post-Covid patients recover? Up to 10-15 %, recovering patients can end up with post-viral fatigue syndrome. If you feel you are not improving or if the activity makes you feel worse, it could be postviral fatigue syndrome. They will need to see a physiotherapist to get assessed and come up with different management strategies to rehabilitate. TULIP - OCTOBER, 2020 55

TAROT |

Taurus Aries Mars continues its journey through your sign, and as a result you’ll feel enthusiastic, energetic and capable of winning out in any situation, especially in the area of your career.

You may have made some special plans in the middle of last year which in some way have so far been frustrated and failed to materialise. And as a result things should begin to settle into place, so that you will b able at last to press on with your ideas.

Gemini You tend from time to time to make silly, careless errors. You’ll be prone to that kind of thing this October 2020; so take some deep breaths, relax, and above all take your time.

Virgo Cancer

Leo

Not a lot of time for your favourite activities, this month – demands on your time will come from family, friends or workmates, and your schedule won’t have much spare room in it.

Finances are emphasised this October. You’ll have the chance to invest, in one way or another, and whether you invest time or money the resulting profit will be enjoyable as well as probably fruitful.

The emphasis this month is on your relationship with a partner. It’s a positive and happy influence, and if you can find extra time to spend doing the things you most enjoy doing together. You’ll find that it will be time very pleasantly and positively spent.

Libra Avoid rich food as much as possible, until at least the 20th – your digestion will be particularly vulnerable to acidity and other disturbances until then, and while abstinence may be boring, at least you won’t be likely to groan too much when you set feet on your bathroom scales.

Scorpio

Sagittarius

An older relative or maybe a business partner – at any rate an authority figure of some kind – will be important to you this month, and you will do well to listen to any proffered advice, and carefully consider it.

You’re among the Zodiac enthusiasts who never seem, to be still, and this is a particularly good time for re-charging your batteries. So relax as much as you can this month – at home with a good book, if possible.

Capricorn

Aquarius

You are not usually indecisive, but this month may uncharacteristically find it difficult to make up your mind. Try not to let this get you down too much – it’s not the right time at which to commit yourself to any line of action, anyway, whether in an emotional situation or any other.

If you’re accused of being stubborn, take the accusation seriously – this is no time for inflexibility. Try harder than usual to keep an open mind about important issues. You should be quite capable of seeing things clearly and not digging your toes in when a little calm thought will convince you that it’s a bad thing to do.

Pisces During this time take every opportunity to expand your interests – financial and otherwise – and take on new challenges. Your confidence will be boosted by the planets, and you’ll be in the right frame of mind for taking decisive action.
