THE SILENT CHEERLEADER

A TEACHER

When we hear the word teacher, our mind goes to white chalks, blackboards, exams and a pile of paper correction. Hardly do we see through it all, beyond that lies a human capable of changing simple minds into geniuses. The old proverb, teaching is the profession that teaches all the other professions is surprisingly accurate. Everyone can and is a student at some point in life, but not everyone can be a teacher. The ability to not only understand knowledge themselves but to pass it on and render it to young minds is truly amazing.

-By Umera Riyaz

TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2020 29

| SPECIAL Teaching is more of a passion than a profession, requires an attitude more than an aptitude. The life of a teacher is devoted to building up that attitude for themselves and their students. Apart from the subject content, the core teaching is to make their student a kind, compassionate and an independent being, who develops the art of living life with self-esteem and confidence.” Dr Reena Dewan (Professor Dept. of English Language & Literature St Francis College for Women)

This teachers’ day, I would like to talk about how teachers must be more empathetic towards children and adults alike. I have memories of being humiliated, which is etched into my mind even now. The idea of having one ideal that children must aspire to, stunts a child’s growth. As a teacher myself, I’d say, let’s find alternative ways of dealing with them than violently belittling them. Spare a rod and spoil the child is an old saying that must be shunned. Sindhu Usha (Verbal faculty with Jamboree Education) A teacher is like subtitles to a foreign language movie, without which you cannot understand the film, likewise even in life without a teacher, we are genuinely incomplete. A teacher is wind beneath students’ wings so that they can fly high. My teachers changed my life, and I wish to impact my students for a better future now as a teacher! Shreshtha Manbasi Asst. Professor, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism (Villa Marie Degree College for Women)

The teacher plays the role of initiator. Society needs to acknowledge and reciprocate what the teacher suggests would be best for a student. Similarly, it is the responsibility of a teacher to identify every student’s individuality. The teacher not only enacts several roles played by a parent but also prioritises what’s best for a child individually amongst a class of several students. Sumaiyya Fayaz Teacher at Phoenix International School (Underprivileged school for children) 30 SEPTEMBER, 2020 TULIP

School is often referred to a second home because we spend a large part of our childhood at school and whether we believe or not, but a teacher subsequently becomes a second parent as well. Looking after us, guiding us and secretly loving us. Although during the age of adolescence, a teacher and student relationship is filled with conflict. As the student tries becoming an adult and the teacher tries her/his best to guide young adults in the right direction. From teaching us how to hold our pencils correctly to helping us decide over our future; teachers are always present.

SPECIAL |

Teachers play a huge role in moulding a child in terms of his personality, skills and the child itself as a human. We may deny but more than half of the skills we know today is because of a teacher. The job that we are proud of is because of a teacher. The achievements we hold so dearly close to our hearts are because of our teachers. A teacher’s support can uplift a child more than they can imagine. Do you remember the smile from getting a gold star in your book? Or that special attention on your birthday? Teachers make sure they spread joy and happiness in a student’s life. Teachers are not merely educators who teach various subjects at an institute. They are mentors guiding us through are difficult decisions. They are counsellors who talk us through our issues and are advisers suggesting the right over the wrong. They are gurus the wisest of the wise. They are tutors of life; they are our well-wishers in disguise. As a society, we need to pay more and better respect for our teachers for all that they do for us. Life would not be as easy as it is without teachers. Schools, students and parents need to understand and realise the efforts a teacher puts in the betterment of a student. Teaching is one of the noblest jobs in the world. It has a set of drawbacks, like low pay scale, less recognition and conflicts with management and parents. But the biggest outcome of teaching is being able to impact another life in the most beautiful way. An educator’s sacrifice and efforts go unnoticed throughout their career, by the time we realise this we out of school in our cubicles. Reminiscing the good old memories. Unfortunately, teachers never get the recognition they deserve from society. As tomorrow’s youth and society, we must change this and come together to celebrate and understand the value a teacher deserves. This teachers’ day let’s acknowledge their efforts and sacrifices towards society. Let us be kinder and understanding towards our teachers, celebrate the human behind every student to live. Let’s celebrate teachers’ day!

SATPREET KAUR A Blogger by passion who loves talking about all things fine under the sun. A PR and Communications Head by profession that helps her understand the best of influencers from the other side of the table. How can Bloggers/Influencers use their platform to spread positivity and meaningful messages back to their followers? Blogging is a very personal form of communication, and every individual is bound to have their opinions, that may or may not match the thoughts of others. Internet, social media to be more specific can be great but at the same point it can get too much, the amount of information available can be daunting. The best way to spread positivity is to make sure when you talk about something, the audience knows it’s your personal opinion. Choosing helpful topics like lifestyle, body positivity, mental health, careers have a great impact when shared as a personal experience, it’s important for them to know you are not a professional expert. There are certain topics that can get extremely complicated, but people would expect you to talk about it because everyone is - but you don’t need to! Having said that there are a lot of influencers who go beyond the safety net, accept criticism like a pro and leave a lasting impact. The takeaway is, if you can handle it, go ahead, but don’t do it just because you have a voice and people expect you to. @ssatpreetkaur

SHAGUN SEGAN A Travel Blogger based out of Hyderabad. Been travelling for over 12 years covering 22 Indian States and 35 Countries. What according to you is the difference between a blogger and an influencer? How have the words gotten mixed up in recent times? All bloggers can be influencers, but not all influencers can be bloggers. Someone with knowledge about a subject could now share it with people on their “Blog”, hence a Blogger. Multiple platforms came up to help people share their passion, like Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, Tumblr, Twitter, etc. With lower entry barriers, one didn’t need to be an expert to share their views. It became more about expressing yourself than talking about the subject. Since more people were consuming your work, you held some ‘influence’ on their choices, hence the term “Influencer”. Then the online boom continued and unethical people entered the market, who faked it on the platforms till they ‘made it’. And all of this is still so new for everyone that there are hardly any means to check who’s real and who’s fake. But thankfully, more and more ‘Fake Influencers’ are being called out for unscrupulous activities, which helps to clean up the mess but also brings bad name to the whole community. Influencers love being called Bloggers because that is still respectable, but any Blogger worth their salt shall cringe on being called an Influencer. What’s your take on PR Packages? How can the social media platform be a healthy place to spread positivity and avoid negativity according to you? The surprising part is that in my 5 years of Blogging, not once I have used the term “PR Package” for anything. You mostly see newbies and wannabe ‘influencers’ come up with all these fancy terms. Like PR Package, Awards winners, Blog session, OOTD, BTS, VIP Invites, Curated shoot, etc. When you lack substance, you bolster that up with new terms and make it sound big. The best part about Social Media is that it can be what you want it to be. There’s a freedom of choice - who do you want to follow, whom to DM, whose comment to reply to, whose video you want to watch. So, if anyone feels that everything is negative, they need to step back and check if that’s what they are getting into unknowingly. Ignore those accounts; don’t engage with toxic people and you take charge of your own positivity. There are tonnes of accounts out there who talk real, have healthy discussions and bring joy to everyone’s life. But sadly, it’s the loud, obnoxious, hateful, negative stuff that gets our attention. Slowly we do fall back onto the right path and bring in all those positive vibes, but till then, all we can do is stay strong, positive and enjoy the platform. @eattripclick

Her content mainly revolves around pink and bling two of her biggest loves. How do you keep yourself updated even when the fashion trend is keep on changing every day? Who is your motivation or inspiration? Trends keep changing. I always like to keep it classic while I’m adapting to new things coming in trend. I’m the most comfy in long flowy dresses or a classic pant suit set. It’s either Girly or Glam for me. I would suggest - stick to your basics. Add a little bling and Voila! You are good to go. In these testing times of Covid businesses are struggling to survive how Bloggers/Digital Creators can support other small businesses? How would you be able to support them as a digital creator through your content on the social media platform? It is a tough time for everyone and I feel really bad for small businesses because they have been badly hit. With everyone supporting - Vocal for local, we have been doing the same too. We sit every day and find pages in different parts of India and pitch to working for them for absolutely free to support their business. We have been looking for smaller designers in Jaipur, Kolkata and other such places so that we can offer a different set of the audience when we create content for them on our page. @theshimmergirl

VISHAL FERNANDES A profound business traveler and a widely recognized blogger who has established himself as an authority on all things luxe. He can mainly be found traveling the world and stopping off at some of the best hotels sampling their food & wines, or at some of the most prolific events. Along with his love for Food, Travel, and wines, comes a massive enthusiasm for cars & watches. Q. How responsible do you think you are when contributing to society through your content? I started blogging 10 years ago (on Blogspot) with whatever basic principles of blogging I knew back then. Validate facts before publishing, respect copyright laws, give credit where it’s due, honest opinions, disclosures about sponsored content and being aware of the possible implications or ramifications of your content. Although in recent years the blogosphere has changed towards microblogs and vlogs, I still tend to incorporate these basic principles with my content. And this, I think, makes me a responsible blogger towards society with my content. Q. Do you feel there should be some code of ethics that should be followed by everyone online on social media platforms while generating the content? As of today, there is no central authority that governs the blogosphere and this gives them freedom to publish whatever in a manner possible. This I think is problematic, because it gives powers without restraint. To tackle this, I think it’s high time an actual mediating authority should come into existence to bring in some discipline. @thefernandist

What do you think of the recent changes which have brought a great change and how? I definitely think that due to the pandemic a lot of people are spending more time on social media and that is also making brands invest more on digital marketing simply because that’s currently the most effective medium. To see such a great shift in the active number of audience is a great change! Q. What kind of responsibilities you think you have as a Blogger towards the society to spread positivity through your content, as a lot of negativity has taken over on social media platform now days? Using your platform to address issues, to spread positivity and bring about awareness is stuff any individual should do regardless of how many people follow them. To an extent we are all influencers. ARIA KRISHNAMURTI A Blogger from Hyderabad started off in London, once she graduated from London College of fashion in fashion communications. Aria has been a content creator for 5 years now, nationally and internationally. She creates fashion content primarily but also has gotten into lifestyle & travel blogging. She has a website www.Everythingaria.com where she writes about everything under the sun & moon! The social media world is developing at a much quicker pace every year. What do you think of the recent changes which has brought a great change and how? Well, I feel social media has always been informative, and it has changed to be a pleasant change during this year + the lockdown, there’s a welcome change in everyone’s opinions and voicing things out. Now more than ever, everyone’s suddenly not afraid to voice the important issues out nor have a conversation on them. I’m happy that a lot of people are now open to using their bare, raw emotions and feelings and self on social media, I would like to think, gone are the days of just “ pretty images” and filtered thoughts. It’s all about being evolving and changing the aspect for a few dozen around social media. Even the shy, have shunned being shy and have their voice up and ready to discuss the facts and figures. I am liking where this dialogue is heading. And I hope we continue to keep this change hard-core. How according to you is a Blogger/Digital Creator responsible to spread positivity in the society and how responsible you think you are? Well, content creators and bloggers have a lot of pressure when it comes to performing on social media. I don’t agree that it is ONLY content creators and bloggers who should be responsible to spread positivity on social media or in society. When it comes to spreading positivity it could be virtually or even physically. Just like any person over the internet, should be kind and gentle with their approach I feel content creators will take lead. We do everything in our power to put positivity out there along with all our work. Because when it comes from a platform with a reach and their audience it’s the most sensible thing to do. Just like you would want to preserve your families mental health and be positive and kind, it’s the same act of kindness over the internet and society. Everyone’s one big family and if we don’t create positive dialogues or work, it will slowly eat the person who follows you, you and your work. It will catch you in non-positive ways. Hence content creators and bloggers are doubly sure and affirmed to put out positive content and try to make social media and society a better space of living. @stylemearia

HASINI YELLA REDDY A Hyderabadi girl who loves experimenting with fashion. She loves creating content on fashion and skincare. Fashion enthusiasts who are looking for some fashion tips and styling, her Instagram handle might help you find references and inspiration. Q. How important is selecting a niche and sticking to it for creating content, can content sometimes go out of the niche? Niche plays a very important role in creating content while one should know what makes them passionate to create content. Sticking around your niche makes your audience know more about your personality and style statement. And there is nothing wrong in going out of the niche, it’s always good to experiment and try new things to find new you. You always learn about your interests by exploring new things around but make sure you create your vibe and style. Q. What kind of responsibilities you think you have as a digital creator towards the society to spread positivity through your content, as a lot of negativity has taken over on social media platform now days? As a content creator, one should have the responsibility to influence people in a good way. Firstly I encourage everyone to spread positivity and believe in self-love. I believe “the way you carry yourself matters the most”, people shouldn’t differentiate themselves nor others based on religion, caste, skin tone, body weight and appearance. Negativity affects mental health and leads to depression. I hope people understand this and end it soon. I’m making sure whenever I receive negative actions in my feed I take them down, depending on the situation I would give them the positive feedback to make them understand. Always see the good side and ignore the negative side; they aren’t going any far. Change starts with you; always be a better person and true to yourself then the negativity will overcome. INSIA NAQVI She’s a Writer, Video Creator and an Entrepreneur. She makes funny relatable content, works on poetry and has founded Hydrostan (a quintessential Hyderabadi apparel brand) alongside with her best friend. She uses her platform to inspire change through humor. Q. How responsible you think you are when contributing to society through your content? With great reach and exposure, comes great responsibility and the only way to ensure responsibility whilst creating content is to know the difference between humor and cyber bullying under the garb of humor. So long as your content is organic, authentic and doesn’t violate a people, you’re in the clear. Q. How do you deal with the Negativity Online? How do you keep a focus and where do you take inspiration from to get ideas for your content? People tend to forget dissent is their right and so is free speech. What isn’t their right is vulgarity, robbing people of their dignity and seriously damaging some ones mental health simply because you don’t agree with their content. Incessant cyber bullying should not be an occupational hazard. You could always hit that unfollow button or report content you find offensive instead of lacing together a string of abuses aimed at someone you barely know. That is what would’ve happened in an ideal world. In this more realistic one, you need to suck it up, dust the hate off and do your thing. That’s pretty much what I do. I no longer block anyone. I just respond with a heart or an “ok” and move on. I draw inspiration from my day to day life and channel all of my energy into creating something that would not only brighten my day but help my viewers take their mind off the vicissitudes of life. I’ve created content not only around dakhni-ness, but also strived to keep it fresh with a new concept every other week. There’s a lot more to Hyderabadi content creation than what meets the eye. @_insiagram_

PARIDHI GULATI A Fashion & Lifestyle content creator she loves to pose for the camera and spread happiness through her content. Q. Now days mobiles are easy to carry and take photos compared to DSLR cameras what do you have to say about it? Of course yes, mobiles being ‘pocket-sized’ are easier to carry and with the advent of ‘Smart’ phones and a rising popularity of social media among the youth and the masses, where each individual is a channel, a medium, a content creator- shooting ‘on the fly’ is more convenient with a camera phone. In phone camera, you get multiple automatic features - adjusting light, face tuning, auto-blur, colour enhancement, etc along with some many popular editing apps( lightroom, photoshop, picsart, snapseed) to digitally enhance your picture and make the picture look more appealing. In the end, photography is about the creation of attractive images. The pictures clicked with DSLR camera gives ample chance to photographer, to not just click the shutter button but also to play with the raw images, and produce digitally appealing images with the optimum quality. It depends on where the images would be used DSLR camera is used for high end add shoots for more crisp clarity for billboards and advertising purpose. Q. How do you deal with online bullying or trolling, what should one do in this scenario? Remember, a troller wants is to insinuate hatred, denigrate, humiliate, inflict pain on you and vent their insecurities upon you. Don’t fall in that trap and do not let it hamper your mental peace. If a comment is not adding any value and is not said in the best interest, and the ‘opinions’ by them is nothing, but nasty nudge at you, then, The best policy is to ignore such comments. Feed no fodder to such notorious people because firstly they are not real IDs, most of the times, hiding behind a screen and secondly, they want your attention and disturb your mental peace. If the perpetrator is causing mental torture and is abusivesimply block and report that account to Instagram. And in the extreme-most case, report it to Cybercrime police. Having said that, If a particular comment is a constructive criticism or a suggestion, respond them with facts, and ask them a suggestion on what made them conclude that, ask them how can you improve and or mitigate it with humour. Emphatatic & Elite

Syed Irfan In a world radically altered bythe Covid-19 pandemic, philanthropic stints of this young businessman during lockdown from Hyderabad seem straight out of a cinematic reel. But only they are as real as it gets. Being born with a golden spoon hasn’t affected altruism he inherited from his father Syed Hameeduddin who started his career repairing bicycle punctures by the historic Charminar nearly five decades ago and went on to establishing an empire whose products have become a household name in Hyderabad and beyond. In the recent times, Irfan and his brothers Syed Waqaruddin, Syed Imranuddin and Syed Zeeshanuddin under his father’s guidance have been providing daily cooked meals, doorstep delivery of monthly ration kits, and even free oxygen cylinders to Covid-affected families. Here’s a candid conversation with Syed Irfan, Vice Chairman - RR Group of Companies. TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2020 49

| COVER STORY

How did you become an entrepreneur? Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Being human is more important than being a businessman or an entrepreneur, something my father wanted my first focus to be. Sometimes that leads to good ideas, and these ideas take us on new roads and life changing journeys. It is our social responsibility as a human being to care about others around us. During the pandemic, thousands of people did not have food to eat, countless others lost jobs. If you can be an entrepreneur, your first responsibility is to be able to help others with your work, make a difference. It gives you satisfaction that a million dollars can’t buy. Otherwise, I like to keep it plain and simple. When not at work, I love skylarking with my friends, long drives and family indulgences. What is the STARTUP story behind your business? When did it start? It is not a lesser known fact that we rose from very humble beginnings. My father (Syed Hameeduddin) used to sit along the pavement by the historic Charminar and repair punctured tyres. He worked really hard to feed us, and gradually jumped into the tobacco business. Our whole family used to work with him to deliver the orders, and gradually we expanded year after year. Today, RR Group of Companies is spread across different verticals from manufacturing spices and kitchen products to realty and development. We founded a group of companies to cater needs of the modern world with the name WIIZ an acronym formed from the first letters of us brothers –Waqar, Imran, Irfan and Zeeshan. Our company WIIZ Realtors LLP in real estate business, WIIZ Health Tech has been handling all technical, medical and surgical equipment in the healthcare sector. WIIZ LED that deals in LED fittings and electrical accessories has shown promising growth. As an entrepreneur, what is it that motivates and drives you? The joy achieved by helping people who do not ask out of their dignity is priceless. They thank us when we extend a helping hand, and I thank the Almighty for giving me the opportunity to. It gives me a feeling of selfsatisfaction that is unmatched. And it keeps me going. Who Inspires You? My father (Syed Hameeduddin) worked really hard all day to long under the sun to feed us every day. When we gradually grew into a business empire, he did not disregard the humble past and always makes it a point to help people in need, regardless of their race or religion. He taught us to love people, love the country and how to face the challenges with a smile on face, with no room for dissent, disappointment or grudge against anyone. During the recent lockdown, through our RR Charitable Trust, he arranged Covid tests for our entire workforce, provided monthly ration packs to all and immunity boosting medicines to anyone who tested positive. He still attends weddings of his friend’s daughters and looks after the arrangements personally, staying with them till the lights go out. His simplicity and altruism continues to be an incessant inspiration. Tell us about the biggest challenge you have faced? Being born with a golden spoon in an opulent family, and not forgetting the humble beginning of the business is a big challenge, and so is maintaining relations with everyone. I think the biggest challenge is to be able to fulfil the dreams of my father, who wants to see our business and our family help more and more

people in employment, providing food for everyone and being able to extend means for education in every household. Has the pandemic had any effect on your business? How did you manage, if so? Per se the market situation, it was not the best business quarter for our convention centres and function halls. But we’ve had the opportunity to get closer to our workforce, and also to the people. They are our family too, and they take pride in our bonding with them. The smiles on the faces of deserving people, and some even from middle class strata who lost jobs during lockdown, has multiplied our zeal. We were able to help moderate to critically ill patients affected by the Corona Virus with free Oxygen cylinders. The satisfaction was unprecedented and it has far more than just balanced the disruptions due to the Covid situation. In one word, describe your life as an entrepreneur. Challenging. How do you generate new ideas? Ideas are born from real life circumstances. Personally for me, both domestic and international travel is also a way to explore new ideas

by exchanging thoughts with intellectuals. Every travel or journey is a lesson for me, understanding people from across the world, their nature, psychology, traditions, principles and success stories. Sometimes, even simplest of real life circumstances can seem like inspiration for a business model. The key is to balance themwith the ones that are both innovative and pragmatic. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs who are starting out? There is no shortcut to success. One should first have undeterred determination. Patience and persistence will make the journey easy. Without stamina, skill, strength and speed, achieving not just business goals but anything could be difficult, especially as an entrepreneur is always racing against time. What’s your definition of success, and do you believe you’ve achieved it yet? Fortune favours the brave. If you have good intentions and an innovative business idea, Almighty paves way for your success. At the helm of the company, we’re way ahead of the competition. The first generation of our family spent life in penury. As the second generation, I am blessed with an opulence of love, wealth and business. Being able to help someone is success, the priceless smile on their face is success and the trust of your employees in you is success. When you’re at the helm, success would also be to keep things relevant to the changing times for decades to come. What are your future plans? My immediate goal is to restore things to normalcy after the pandemic whirls out. By mid-2021, we are planning to fortify our presence into realty and electrical supplies. Our focus will be to diversify without diluting the essence of the brand RR Group of Companies has become.

Block Printing

These days, nearly everything we buy is mass produced and machine-made. It’s difficult to imagine the days when garments were sewn by hand and cloth was block printed. Today the process of block printing is popularly associated with making designs on fabrics by printing on them, with the help of a block made for that purpose. Believed to have its origin in China, block printing has been in use around the world now, for quite some time. Block printing is making use of a carved piece of wood or any other type of wooden block to imprint an image on fabric or paper. In the early days of printing, it was used to print entire books. It has simplicity and ease of execution. There is the sharpness, accuracy and fine detailing of prints made on the fabrics. The huge possibilities of match and mix of different block designs in various colours on the same fabric as in large canvas fabrics like the saree and salwar kameez is stupendous. A large number of wooden blocks are always kept in readiness for use based on the intended patterns and designs. Creating a new block with a new design is fairly quick and easy. Blocks are of good quality wood and so they have durability. Metallic blocks are sometimes used but maneuverability limits their use compared to wooden blocks.Intricate and sharp detailing for complicated designs can be etched out in the blocks which is possible only in these wooden blocks. Accessories like hair brushes are used for filling in the blank areas between outlines of the design. A point on the block serves as a guide for the repeat impression, so that the whole effect is continuous and not disjoint. The extensive choice of colours make the designs vibrant and fresh-feel. Block prints and brush prints having been tried out successfully on fabrics like cotton, silkand others. Kalamkari

Kalamkari is an ancient style of hand painting done on cotton or silk fabric with a tamarind pen, using natural dyes. The word Kalamkari is derived from a Persian word where ‘kalam‘ means pen and ‘kari‘ refers to craftsmanship. This art involves 23 tedious steps of dyeing, bleaching, hand painting, block printing, starching, cleaning and more. Motifs drawn in Kalamkari spans from flowers, peacock, paisleys to divine characters of Hindu epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana. Nowadays, this art is primarily done to create Kalamkari sarees. The process of making Kalamkari involves 23 steps. From natural process of bleaching the fabric, softening it, sun drying, preparing natural dyes, hand painting, to the processes of air drying and washing, the entire procedure is a process which requires precision and an eye for detailing. Kalamkari art primarily use earthy colours like indigo, mustard, rust, black and green. Natural dyes used to paint colours in Kalamkari art is extracted for natural sources with no use of chemicals and artificial matter. There are two identifiable styles of Kalamkari art in India – Srikalahasti style and Machilipatnam style. In the Machilipatnam style of Kalamkari, motifs are essentially printed with hand-carved traditional blocks with intricate detailing painted by hands. On the other hand, Srikalahasti style of painting draws inspiration from the Hindu mythology describing scenes from the epics and folklore. This style holds a strong religious connect because of its origin in the temples. From the first representation of Kalamkari art as religious paintings, depicting Indian gods and goddesses to the process of gaining recognition during the reign of Mughal dynasty, and till today when Andhra Pradesh is the largest producer of Kalamkari; this art has come a long way. Mirror Work

Mirror work has been in vogue for centuries and is popularly known as “Shisha” or “Abhala Bharat” embroidery. This is an art form in which mirrors of various shapes are fixed on to the fabric through embroidery. In recent times however, mirrors have been replaced by reflective luminescent metal pieces of different shapes and sizes, particularly on apparel. Mirror work is used on various fabrics such as georgette, crepe, cotton, silk, chiffon and many more which are then turned into attractive apparel and accessories ranging from sarees, to cushion covers and belts. Mirror or Shisha embroidery as we find it today actually originated in the 17th century and was originally done by using Mica. It which was later replaced by glass. The use of these decorative embellishments was inherited from Iran during the Mughal reign. However, surprisingly, the Mughal rulers did not wear clothes embellished with mirrors. Mirror work is used to embellish and decorate a variety of items such as sarees, dresses, skirts, bags, cushion covers, bedspreads, wall hangings and many such items. The products not only have a great demand within India, but globally as well. Shisha work products are always in vogue regardless of the occasion or the type of décor. Mirror work or embroidery is a significant local craft in the state of Gujarat and is known as ‘Abhala Bharat’ and different variations of this craft can be seen in varying shades across the various regions of the state. Gujarat is particularly famous for its mirror-embellished chaniya-cholis, torans, tapestries, accessories, apparel and bags and other exquisite mirror work handicrafts from the state. Ajrak Print

When the world is buzzing with “sustainability” and “environmentfriendly” as the newest big trends of the future, for many centuries, innumerable crafts have existed in harmony with nature. Some things so subtle that they do not glare out, yet so vivid that one cannot help but appreciate the aesthetics in their creation. One such craft is the Ajrak. Traditionally, Ajrak is the name of a block printed cloth with deep crimson red and indigo blue background, bearing symmetrical patterns with interspersed unprinted sparkling white motifs. An ancient craft, the history of the Ajrak can be traced back to the civilizations of the Indus Valley that existed around 2500 BC-1500 BC.The term “Ajrak”, may be derived from “Azrak”, meaning blue in Arabic, as blue happens to be the one of the principal colours in Ajrak printing. The Ajrak is usually about 2.5-3meters in length. The authentic Ajrak is printed on both sides by a method called resist printing. The printing is done by hand with hand carved wooden blocks. Several different blocks are used to give the characteristic repeated patterning. Making the blocks is a considerable challenge since the pattern has to synchronize perfectly with the whole of the Ajrak as well as cover various areas against dye. Ajarak printing is a long process involving many stages of printing and washing the fabric over and over again with various natural dyes and mordants such as harda, lime, alizarin, indigo and even camel dung. The technique of resist printing allows exclusive absorption of a dye in the desired areas only and prevents absorption on the areas intended to be left uncolored. This craft has been on a decline because modern, quicker methods of printing and bright chemical dyes are replacing the natural, muted colours and this slow and careful process of printing this traditional textile. But with efforts of the master craftsmen and increasing awareness among the urban people, this crafts is slowly gaining momentum. Because of being an environment friendly ancient craft, Ajrak, is slowly gaining visibility among the cosmopolitan. Screen Printing

Screenprinting is undoubtedly an art form. The attention to detail that goes into the screenprinting process is crucial. Screenprinting is not an exact science and it’s best for vibrant designs. Mostly it is done in bulk and manually handled. Ink + screen (mesh stencil) = screenprinting! Luckily, the screen printing process itself has very little limits on what surfaces can be used to print on. Staying on trend is easy-peasy with this process, considering all of the awesome ink types available that can manipulate the “look” of the final print. Expert printers understand the relationships between the various inks, fabric materials, and fabriccolours - with this knowledge, they’re able to help achieve the look you’re going for. Technically Speaking, screen printing is one screen (mesh stencil) is used for each colour to be printed - screens must be lined up and printed on test sheets to ensure that all of the colours line up correctly. Inks are then pushed through the screens one colour at a time onto the apparel. Finally, each piece is run through a large dryer to cure the inks. Many people think screenprinting is limited to shirts only - this couldn’t be more false! Here’s the lowdown on what can be screen printed - tote bags/purses , jackets, mouse pads, flags, banners, signs, bandanas, and more. Explore different options. Think you’re limited to a plain old cotton shirt for screen printing? Think again! There are a ton of great synthetic fabrics out there that work great with - polyester, silk, viscose, and more. Digital printing

Digital printing on fabric is also known as digital textile printing. What is Fabric Printing?Fabric printing is the process of applying coloured patterns and designs onto fabric. In the 1990s, ink-jet printers became widely available for paper printing applications — you might even have one on your office desk right now!The technology has continued to develop with time. It has been so much developed that we are printing on fabrics these days. Digital fabric printing is act of printing digital files onto fabric using ink jet based printers. There are mainly two successful digital textile printing methods:Sublimation Digital Printing, Direct Digital Printing. There are lot of benefits for digital printing. Digital fabric printing is always pushing the boundaries of innovation and has come long way since its inception. In simple words, when digital images are reproduced on physical surface, it is called digital printing. The physical surface can be in forms like paper, cloth, plastic, film, etc. In digital textile printing, once the design is created, it can be directly printed on the fabric from the computer. This process does not require any other step. Just as an image is printed on the paper easily, one can print designs on fabric. Digital printing has opened new doors for textile and clothing designers in the retail market. In the future, digital printing technology will not only replace the existing printing methods, but also offer new products, opportunities and markets. Tryst with Green Living What is sustainable living? It is a philosophy that encourages you to make choices that will optimize your health, the health of your community, and the health of the planet, by choosing to use resources mindfully, and by choosing to buy things that last for a long time, are multi-functional, and are non-toxic to your health. It does not mean you have to throw away your current lifestyle. You have to do it for yourself and the unconventional droughts and floods you are facing right now. -By Amrutha Varshini Kothapally 56 SEPTEMBER, 2020 TULIP

ENVIRONMMENT | Many of the articles, facts or documentaries we read or watch on sustainable lifestyle predominantly come from the first world countries where standards of living, opportunities and public responsibility are much higher than what we have. Nevertheless, we are the ones who are going to be affected the most due to the virtue of our topography and being a woman worsens that. For instance, a woman of colour in Jakarta (which is sinking at the rate of 25 cm per year) is unequivocally more affected by climate change right now than a white man in the United States. The first step to begin a sustainable lifestyle is to know “Why you are doing this? What point are you trying to prove? My point was to quit multinational cooperations and stop supporting voracious companies. End of the day, climate change or plastic consumption is rooted in these companies who take no responsibility on providing better for the people and only work for their gain. If you are a 19-year-old, student, drowning in assignments, dependent on your family and living in a family you must be questioning if it is even possible to live in a lifestyle like this. Over the last two years, I have worked to make this lifestyle accommodable with me in the least irruptive way as possible. Although I will disclose, I do slack now and then. Living and being dependent on your family comes with its own set of challenges. Although my family is in favour of me following this lifestyle that doesn’t mean they follow as I do. For instance, I use a bamboo toothbrush while my sister uses an electric toothbrush. This

candidly shows how adverse people in a family can be even after understanding its impact. The worst effect on my attempt for green living is covid-19. My plastic consumption has almost doubled since the lockdown. No, I am not talking about odd bits and pieces of plastic-like straws and chocolate wrappers. It is also about using sanitizers in a plastic container, nonbiodegradable masks and everything we are letting slide these days for our health. Ironically avoiding the use of plastic once doesn’t have an immediate effect on our health. So, you will only see this effect after much time. Like asthma and other breathing problems, you may sustain in your future is due to the choices you make now.

FOOD. One of the most vocal points of sustainable living. If you think being vegan is a cure-all like the west, then you are wrong. Living on plant-based diet sure is 100% good for the planet but eating locally and seasonally is more important which is often not conveyed by these so-called vegan gurus. For instance, the avocados available here are strenuous to grow and therefore expensive while a lot of vegan bloggers show avocadoes as a bare minimum in their diet. Also, an integral part of sustainable living is zero waste. I found the TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2020 57

easiest way to use my kitchen waste through Max La Manna’s book “More Plants Less Waste”. He uses vegetable waste like leafy greens stem, corn stock, onion peels, carrot tops, etc to make vegetable stock used to make soup. Another trick is using citrus discards to produce a non-toxic homemade home cleaner. The key for living a green living is learning, understanding and implementing. If you start to learn and question your life choices and execute it to change in small ways- that is progress. You will fail sometime and succeed most times but remember your goal. Start with tiny changes like using a reusable straw/cloth bag/water bottle, switch off appliances and plug them out to save electricity and use less fossil fuels. Buying less is an easy way to reduce your waste. Be it clothing or food less buying is proportional to the 58 SEPTEMBER, 2020 TULIP

less waste you generate. Don’t mistake this for greenwashing or whitewashing. I am not trying to enunciate consumer guilt. I believe that “social change will bring political change”. The small steps we take as an individual will bring change in the functioning of the profit-driven system. The choice we make as consumers in choosing to support the fossil fuel industry or sustainable brands is on us. I believe that sustainable living is mattering, especially if you’re living in a big city in a mainstream manner because you need to control the things that can be controlled. There are so many things that are out of our control. The air we breathe, the fuel that we use. But if you control the things that you can control, like the products that you put in your body and on your body, and the way you store your food to ensure that chemicals don’t get leached into it, then I believe that you can positively impact your health by controlling those things. @maseeramehndi_artist:

It’s no secret that henna is a vital part of the South East Asian culture, a tradition that holds firm roots in the history of Indian beauty. How a plant made its way into becoming such an integral part of Indian weddings is anyone’s guess, but the fact simply solidifies the role of henna in Indian culture. From the obvious wedding scenarios, where the mark of the bride comes from her arms stained in henna patterns, to the tradition of the groom seeking his initials in her palms, to festivals, to even the most minor of celebrations, henna has always been a permanent guest. Henna has been a passion of Maseera, awardee ofTelangana Artists Association, since the age of eight, and over the years, it has manifested itself into a set of goals that she want to reach at any cost. It is important to note that the journey was a tough one, laced with obstacles in the form of the negative societal view of henna artistry as a profession. Mehendi artists were just some girls with inadequate pay, unrecognized, and underappreciated for their skill. For Maseera, one of the main goals has always been to remove the negative stigma from the profession, to be seen as a respectable profession, and to receive the dues that the work deserves. Maseera has worked with over a hundred brides and, her studio has four hundred students learning the craft. Now that the virus has shut down most businesses, she has been taking online classes, and they have worked so much better than expected as the audience has expanded to international students as well. Given India’s diversity, it’s not surprising that India itself has a variety of designs and Maseera has been adapting to the new demands of her audience with determination and sincerity. With henna’s vast presence in Indian culture being evergreen, it’s refreshing to see artists like Maseera working hard towards making this profession a big success.

When Saleha started her Instagram page @mehendi_tales, she didn’t know where this journey would take her. She just wanted a platform to share her talent and passion, which have grown into a full fledged career. With time, encouragement and determination, she worked hard to be recognized as a “Henna Artist”, bettering her work and bringing out the best in her. Being a student and building her career has been a task for her, which she has taken up with ease. From simple henna on finger tips and palms, henna has journeyed through a lot of changes and innovations, and Saleha has grasped the art very well. With brides expressing their feelings with henna, artist like Saleha have to make sure that their henna designs are fresh, unique and relevant to the theme and the details of the weddings. For Saleha, starting her social media page and taking up henna as a profession has been very rewarding, as she gets to present her clients with joyous moments and memories of their special day. She wants to keep working towards making henna her career and continue with the art. As it is so well put, in her own words, “ No Wedding is Complete without Henna”. TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2020 61

What is Mindful Eating? Framson et al. 2009 described “Mindful eating” as a non-judgmental awareness of physical and emotional sensations associated with eating”. It involves eating with total attention, awareness, and enjoying the food wholeheartedly while being in the present moment. In today’s era, it’s become really natural for people to get distracted while consuming their meals. It is often seen that we are caught up into doing some or the other activity while we eat our meals. As the generations have evolved, we have become very close to our gadgets and smart devices, and have undoubtedly started using it in a “not so smart” manner. We sit and eat in front of the Television, Binge watch shows, scroll through social media, talk over the phone or chattering with people, checking messages, all of it while eating! In simple words, mindful eating is described as the act of eating slowly; not being involved in any other activity while eating, such as reading a book, watching television, scrolling or conversing over the phone, doing an assignment or eating only when hungry and stopping when one is full. It also includes responding to food with a non-judgmental attitude; opting for foods that are nourishing, nutritious and enjoyable by activating all the senses while enjoying the meal; like being aware of the act of unmindful eating (e.g., eating out of boredom). What is “Mind Full” Eating? Being ‘Mind Full’, as the name suggests involves a state where the mind is full of thoughts, hankering on to experiences from the past, latching on to pleasant or unpleasant memories and losing onto the precious -

‘present moment’. It is described as the opposite of ‘Mindfulness’ where the individual may be living either in the past or in the future, instead of the present. “Mind Full” Eating or “Mindless” Eating is usually observed when one does not bother to pay any attention to their external or internal body cues. Our bodies are constantly communicating to us by sending signals from our brain to the gut and vice versa. Choosing to consciously listen to these signals and responding to the body according to its needs can really do wonders! Eating Mindlessly has been linked tolesser nutrient absorption, decreased assimilation of food, inability to regulate the food intake and an increase in the weight of the individuals leading to high chances of obesity. Factors that Influence Mind Full Eating: Emotions: This involves eating in response to certain emotions; for eg: eating when feeling low or sad. It is often seen that a person may consume foods either in excess or restrain themselves in response to certain emotions like depression, anxiety, mood disorders, etc. Eating foods in large quantities in response to certain emotions like boredom, stress, anger, sadness, fear, trying to suppress or soothe the negative emotions has been termed as “Emotional Eating’. Gadgets: A lot of us are really used to eating along with our gadgets. Like talking on the phone, watching a movie, scrolling through social media, etc. Research has shown that there is a higher energy or fat TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2020 63

intake due to snacking in front of the TV. Social Gathering: The behavioural attributes of eating companions can also affect food intake and the nature of mindful eating. Both family and friends tend to affect people’s eating behaviour. Some of us tend be more comfortable around people who may be known and eat without shying away whereas; a few may find eating to be task when surrounded by strangers or unknown people. There are also different studies which reportthat meals eaten with family and spouse are larger and eaten faster, whereas meals eaten with friends are of longer duration. Food advertisements: It has been proved that the food advertisements have an effect on our food consumption habits. It has been observed that, foods that are heavily advertised are the ones that involve the maximum consumption and those which are under-advertised are consumed less. Food pricing: It has been explained that the pricing of the food may also play a role in determining our food consumption. If we find something that may be a little less expensive, we tend to overdo it by buying in excess which may ultimately lead to over consumption. It is also very interesting to note that food pricing may not only affectthe quantity of food but also the types of foods that are being consumed.

World Tourism Day 2020

This year’s theme is Building Peace! Fostering Knowledge! So we are going to share with you tales behind the most famous tourist places around the world. With many breathtaking and incredible historical sites built by ancient civilizations, it’s sometimes hard to narrow down the best, but here is a list that will keep you.

By- Satpreet Kaur

Taj Mahal

Built-in the 1600s, this building in Agra, India, is a testament to undying love. This white marble tomb built for Emperor Shah Jahan’s deceased wife is a must-see for everyone. In 1983, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site, and also has been named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The Taj sees between two and four million tourists annually, so there have been recent restrictions on tourism to help protect the site. However, the greatest threat is the air pollution that is destroying the marble.

Machu Picchu

Located in southern Peru, this ruined city lies on top of a mountain that’s only accessible by train or a four-day trek. Rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911, it was an important cultural centre for the Inca civilization but was abandoned when the Spanish invaded the region. (It is famously referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas,” though that is Vilcabamba). The location was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, and it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. Concerns over growing numbers of tourists have led to limitations on how many people can enter the site, though only by a fraction of what is necessary. Hopefully, they will limit it even more so this site can last for hundreds of years more. 66 SEPTEMBER, 2020 TULIP

This Mayan city-state is one of the largest and best-preserved ruins of that civilization and was a dominant force in the Mayan world during the Classic Period (200-900 AD). Located in Guatemala, this place lets you experience your inner Indiana Jones early in the morning or late at night when the tourists go home and it’s just you and the jungle. It is very serene, and that made for one of the best travel memories. Be sure to spend the night in the park, as you then really get to see it without the crowds. You will enjoy seeing the sunrise from atop the temples.

The Pyramids at Giza

They’re over 3,000 years old, and we still don’t have a good idea as to how they were built or how the Egyptians made them so precise (were aliens involved?). The three pyramids align to the stars and the solstices and contain tons of chambers that still haven’t been (and cannot be) opened. I mean, how did they create those little chambers where people can’t even crawl through? The largest one, called the Great Pyramid, was built by the Pharaoh Khufu and has limited access to it. The Pyramids are truly a marvel of human engineering that was fit for kings. (You will also find the Sphinx nearby, another historical site whose mysteries baffle researchers and are the subject of many conspiracy theories.) TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2020 67

Petra

Carved into a canyon in Arabah, Jordan, Petra was made famous by the third Indiana Jones film when he went to find the Holy Grail. The site was “discovered” in 1812 by a Swiss explorer who followed some local tribesmen there; before that, it had been forgotten to the Western world. Though its founding is unknown, it appears this place had settlers as early as the 6th century BC. Under Roman rule, the site declined rapidly and was abandoned by the late 4th century. In 1985, Petra became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was recently named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Stonehenge

Located near Salisbury, this megalithic structure is over 3,000 years old, and its stones come from Wales. Scholars still are not sure how the builders got the stones there and have tried to replicate the feat, with dismal results. Moreover, we only have a vague idea of its purpose (we’re just guessing). Stonehenge is now fenced off, and you can no longer go into the circle; visitors can only walk around the attraction. But it’s worth visiting for the mystery behind it and an excellent and detailed audio tour. 68 SEPTEMBER, 2020 TULIP

The Colosseum and Forum

The Colosseum and the Forum are right next to each other in Rome, so we included them together. Remnants of a civilization that once controlled the known world, these sites are breathtaking not only for their beauty but also for their history and age. You’re standing in the spot Caesar walked and gazing into the arena where gladiators battled to the death. The Colosseum has slowly crumbled throughout the ages, and much of it is restricted now, especially the floor and basement where everything was organized. The Forum is great to walk around (and it’s free), though a ticket is required for Palatine Hill. We would get a guided tour because the information presented by the authorities doesn’t go into much detail.

The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China consists of numerous walls and fortifications. It was originally conceived by Emperor Qin Shi Huang (ca. 259–210 BC) in the third century BC as a means of keeping out the Mongol hordes invading the country. The best-known and best-preserved section of the Great Wall was built in the 14th through 17th centuries, during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). Though the Great Wall never effectively prevented invaders from entering China, it’s still a massive engineering and construction feat and human accomplishment. TULIP - SEPTEMBER, 2020 69

TAROT | Aries You’ll seriously need to give someone a piece of your mind. Do just that on the 3rd or the 13th – as you’ll have what it takes to clear the air. The month as a whole looks as though there will be little time for anything more than routine, hard work, but you will survive and feel pleased after the 23rd when so much had been cleared up, and your prevailing atmosphere totally changes, with you mood becoming extremely romantic.

Cancer Are you keeping a problem to yourself? If your intuition is saying that this is the right thing to do, you should go along with it, as it rarely lets you down; but it may well be that you are in the throes of a bout of Cancerian worry which might well be disproportionate to the severity of the problem, in which case you should perhaps talk things over with a sensible, practical (Taurus or Capricorn?) friend.

Libra Don’t suggest anything remotely controversial to your partner during the first week of September 2020, as the chances of a positive response are virtually nil; but from then you’ll get exactly what you want and when you want it.

Taurus “If music be the food of love, play on” wrote Shakespeare, and it will be worth your bearing his words in mind during the coming weeks. If you allow your favourite kind of music to flood into your life it will certainly encourage love to follow, and who knows who you’ll meet at that concert, or what will happen when you’re out celebrating with the love of your life. And all this is focused on the 17th and the 21st.

Leo Play your cards right and you’ll make a lot of money. Lovely but difficult! You know you must consider long term growth, but then you’ll want to enjoy the making-spending process too, so if you’re really canny – which you can often be – you’ll play safe (with the long-term stuff) and go on to have a flutter at the races, casino or – even better – at the auction house when that lovely painting or sculpture comes under the hammer.

Scorpio Relationships with colleagues or business partners could be difficult during the first week of the September, and while things may not come to a head until the 21st, with the possibility of a final resolution after the 28th, you are well able to leave problems at the office and enjoy life in your usual ebullient style, with opportunities to socialize and widen your circle of friends.

Virgo From the point of view of your career you will make changes and new beginnings, and must not become apprehensive if offered promotion. Getting married or ending a relationship, starting or increasing your family and the purchase of property are all distinct possibilities.

Sagittarius Although Jupiter is travelling through your sign and giving you both opportunities and support, there’s quite a lot of temporary stress surrounding you at present. It won’t be that easy to rise above it, but if you make sure you’re not sacrificing the things you enjoy doing most (especially exercise, sport – anything physical) it won’t get the better of you.

Pisces

Capricorn Your powers of concentration and practical, cautious mind are spectacularly accentuated, so if you have anything difficult to study, a presentation/lecture to prepare, or you have to come to an important decision, know that the planets are on your side. You are unlikely to make a mistake or forget anything vital to upset the final outcome.

Gemini Due to very active Mercury during the first week of September think twice before you criticise anyone, because your flurry of words will be far harsher than you might realise and in retrospect you’ll wish you’d been gentler and more tactful. Other than that, you will get excellent results for your efforts and will enjoy additional dashing around.

Aquarius You’re drifting up to cloud nine, and loving every colourful moment. Enjoy whatever is going on in your life, but do try to keep a corner of your emotions anchored, because twice this month the planets are being teasingly naughty towards you.

This is a pleasant time of year for you when to get the most of the positive influences working for you, try to spend rather more time that usual with your partner, sharing what you have in common. If this is less than you would like, you have what it takes to inspire him/her to be more interested in, and understanding of what fascinates and involves you, so that empathy, as well as love, is increased.
