The River Club offers memberships to our wonderful residents and also invitational memberships to locals outside of the neighborhood. The Club’s mission is to “Make Remarkable Happen.”

Established in 2005 as the centerpiece of the number-one luxury community in the state of Georgia, the Club features a Greg Norman-designed gem with luscious tree-lined fairways, unique changes of elevation and the truest bent grass greens in Northern Georgia. We have recently just completed a full reconstruction of every on-course bunker. Our signature 17th hole is a golfer’s dream par 3 that boasts an elevated tee shot down to an island green that gives it the perfect mix of scenic fun and challenge. It is also the backdrop to our truly oneof-a-kind men’s lounge perfect for winding down after a day on the course.

Leif Johnson has enjoyed a 25-year hospitality career as a chef, general manager, and entrepreneur. Originally from California, Leif enjoyed the opportunity to train in the northern California kitchens at a time that was at the genesis of the farm to table movement.

Leif believes he truly learned to cook from his grandmother and he credits her with cultivating his interest for cooking at a very early age. As Chef and Managing Partner, Leif successfully operated the fine dining restaurant, gastropub, and full-service catering company he founded 12 years prior.

Tennis

The superb tennis facility at The River Club offers eight acrylic, lighted hard courts.

These newly resurfaced courts are the new blue on green as seen at the US Open and are in excellent condition. A fully stocked pro shop sells everything for the novice and expert player including rackets and grips, stringing services, tennis apparel, and demo rackets. A Playmate ball machine is available to rent for individual practices.

Programming includes fun social activities for all levels. Competitive play and ALTA and USTA leagues are fully endorsed and participation by members is maximized to the fullest. Other programs include: Ultimate Tennis - a singles flex league, T2 Tennis - a doubles flex league, Cardio Tennis, Quickstart for children aged 10 and under, monthly summer socials, and clinics and training for all levels of junior player. Group and private lessons are readily available as well.

Originally from Wichita, Kansas, Torrey has been an Atlanta resident for the last 30 years. While majoring in Psychology, Torrey was a 2-sport college athlete, specializing in basketball and tennis. Living in Atlanta with his wife, Aileen, and their two children, Xavier and Anya, Torrey now dedicates his wealth of experience to The River Club as our Director of Tennis.

PTR and USTA Sport Science certified, NCSI checked and Safe Play approved, with coaching experience at every level throughout his career, Torrey brings a wealth of unrivaled experience to the members of The River Club looking to improve their game. From recreational and league (ALTA, USTA) through High Performance USTA and NCAA Collegiate Division 3 and Division 1, Torrey coached at the very highest levels, working his way up all the way to Pro Tour ATP and WTA.

Prior to joining The River Club, Torrey had worked in Director, Executive Director and Partner roles as part of the largest tennis club and largest tennis management company in the Atlanta area, as well as one of the largest corporate-owned clubs in the US. He was also co-owner of one of the best junior academies in the US.

Specializing in programming and game development for all levels, tactical/strategic doubles play and high-performance junior development, as Director of Tennis, Torrey’s mission at The River Club is to help pave the way for our future tennis champions.

Aquatics

The aquatics complex boasts three separate pools, including a zerodepth entry pool with water features, a 150-foot, triple-loop waterslide, a toddler splash pool and a six-lane junior Olympic pool.

The aquatics program at The River Club offers swim lessons, a swim club for children interested in future swim team participation, monthly flick and floats, water aerobics, pool parties, and events like our favorite “Random Acts of Aquatics.”

Personal Training

Personalized training is a safe and effective way to individualize a weight management and training program personally created to fit your fitness goals. Personal training is available in home or at the Sports Center. To set up an appointment, contact any of our fitness instructors. Each person is different and each plan suits the individual’s needs and goals; our certified trainers are only a recommendation. Personal training charges are per half hour, per full, with buddy training sessions available.

Opened in 2005 by famed golf course architect, Greg Norman, The River Club merges his appreciation of the native landscape with his strategic design skills to create what many are calling the very definition of a true world-class golf course!

Measuring 7,197 yards from the championship tees, the 18-hole championship layout plays to par 72. The River Club’s signature hole is the 163-yard Hole #17, which plays from an elevated tee, just behind the clubhouse, to a beautiful island green.

Audubon International has designated River Club as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. This certification recognizes the efforts we have made in environmental stewardship through participation in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. Under this program, we continually strive toward best management practices in environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, chemical use reduction and safety, water conservation, water quality management, and outreach and education.

As you play the golf course, you will experience two completely different nines. The Front Nine was masterfully designed with the natural terrain and winds through century-old hardwoods and the residential community. The player will experience a sense of peacefulness with no parallel fairways. The Back Nine offers an enchanting “park-like” setting along the Chattahoochee River plain with vibrant wetlands.

The River Club is a Certified Audubon Sanctuary, assuring that its pristine natural condition will remain forever. With five sets of tees plus a family tee, The River Club will offer a wonderful playing experience for all skill levels.

The Practice Facility

The incredible practice facilities at The River Club offer realistic target greens framed by bunkers and a large turf, full swing practice tee. A separate short game complex and putting green sit next to the practice tee. On the far side of the practice facility, the teaching complex offers a moderate-sized turf tee and a complete short game area which offers a great private area for learning and development.

The Professional Team

The golf professional team features a Head Golf Professional, two Assistant Golf Professionals, and a Teaching Professional/Master Club Fitter. Our golf professionals have many years of swing analysis experience using the latest in technology. In addition to private and group lessons, the golf professional team conducts golf clinics for all ages and skill levels. In addition to instruction, our golf professional team manages 18+ member golf events, weekly games, and provides first-class service to our members and guests.

Member Golf Programs

The River Club offers golf programs for men, ladies and juniors of all abilities! The yearly tournament schedule includes events such as: Men’s & Ladies’ Invitationals, Men’s & Ladies’ Club Championships, Men’s & Ladies’ Member-Member, Men’s & Ladies’ President’s Cup, team match play, holiday challenge events, and more! Every Saturday morning, starting times are reserved for the popular men’s day game. The ladies take to the course every Wednesday morning, featuring a ladies’ scramble or play day game.

Chip grew up in Waycross, Georgia. After graduating from Georgia Southern College in 1984, he moved to North Georgia to start a career in coaching and teaching. He taught elementary school and coached high school football, basketball, and golf in Winder, Georgia for 17 years. Through those years in Winder, he developed a relationship with Chateau Elan Hotels & Resorts. That relationship enabled him to eventually move through the golf ranks from Outside Golf Services to Director of Golf at the Chateau Elan resort courses. In 2001, Chip was promoted to the Director of Golf/General Manager position at the Legends of Chateau Elan. In 2009, Chip returned as the Director of Golf at Chateau Elan Hotels & Resorts. Just before The River Club, Chip was the Director of Golf/General Manager at Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club.

Chip is married to Amber. She is an author, realtor, and an equestrian who competes in upper-level events. They have three daughters: Lauren, a graduate of the University of Georgia who attended North Georgia College and is now an RN in the Athens, Georgia area; Bella, who attends Kennesaw State University, is an accomplished violist, and is studying music theory and education; and Lily, who graduated Dacula High School and is following in her mother’s equestrian footsteps. She is a recognized top-level eventer, competing in state competitions. She is currently an intern with a top Olympic equestrian trainer. When Chip’s not at the golf course, you can find him quail or duck hunting, or riding his Harley Davidson.

Born at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado and raised in Utah, Alex excelled in baseball, soccer, and basketball as a junior before taking up golf in high school. Alex earned a full scholarship to play NCAA Division I Golf at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, where he was a four-year starter and helped lead the team to a Big Sky Conference championship in 2011.

Alex obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration/Finance and also gained his PGA Class A membership in the summer of 2016. Alex has a passion for teaching and growing the game of golf, especially with beginners and juniors. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, skiing, and playing golf!

Born on the Florida West Coast, Craig participated in many sports growing up. As a high school senior, Craig found golf and immediately fell in love with the game. In 1992, Craig moved to the Atlanta area to work as a golf professional at RiverPines Golf Club in Alpharetta. In 1999, Craig was awarded the Georgia PGA Junior Leader Award for his work with the young golfers in the area.

Although born in New York, Caren Maher was raised in South Florida. She started playing golf at age 14, continuing to play through college at Florida International University in Miami, before earning her LPGA

Golf certified coach, an Operation 36 coach, and a PGA Jr. League coach, as well as assistant coach for the North Gwinnett High School girl’s golf team.

Caren is a teacher and a coach in every aspect of the game. She creates a fun and comfortable environment that is welcoming to everyone. She enjoys working with all levels of golfers, ranging from competitive golfers to those who have never played before. Caren is married to Jim, and together they have two daughters, Lauren and Allison.

Golf Hole by Hole

The Chattahoochee River, which borders the property, was essential to the culture of the early Native American Cherokee and Creek tribes as well as the settlers from Europe arriving in the 1800s. Outbuildings and stone ruins from this era still reside on the property to give testimony to those who once called this beautiful area home. For the last century, the property was commonly known as “Hutchins Farm” named after a prominent family who worked the land for many generations. When Crescent Resources acquired the pristine land, it offered the perfect setting for the Greg Norman golf course design. The rolling terrain with majestic pines, centuryold hardwoods, and natural wetlands were maintained in keeping with Crescent Resources and Norman’s environmentally friendly philosophy of minimizing disturbance.

With five sets of tees, The River Club will offer a wonderful playing experience for all skill levels. Each phase of the game will be tested and scores will be determined by how well the player takes advantage of the risk vs. reward opportunities. These opportunities will require swings of daring, and if successful, will take the teeth out of the course. Generous landing areas, wonderful shot-making opportunities, and picturesque par 3s are just a taste of what you will experience at The River Club.

The River Club evolved from a very storied past.

Avoiding the bunkers on the tee shot leaves a short to mid-iron to this two-tiered green. Because the front half of the putting surface slopes dramatically toward the front right bunker, pin placement here often determines your score.

This picturesque par 3 is all carry over the water. The winds tend to swirl, so proper club selection is important. The large green makes even a slightly errant tee shot playable.

Long hitters will be tempted to drive this green, but the smart play is to leave yourself a 100-yard approach. The back half of the green slopes away from the fairway to a large collection area.

The hardwoods and pine trees to the right of the fairway separate this hole from the adjacent 8th fairway. This area is a perfect habitat for pileated woodpeckers (dryocopus pileatus), great horned owls (bubo virginianus), northern cardinals (cardinalis cardinalis), eastern chipmunks (tamias striatus), squirrels (sciurus spp.) and wild turkey (meleagris gallopavo).

PAR 5 HANDICAP 1

A well-played tee shot through the trees will find its way to the right of the large fairway bunker. The next two shots are played over the small creek that crosses the fairway and fronts the green. A ridge separates the left and right sides of the putting surface.

Native hardwoods, pines and dogwood trees (cornus spp.) frame this long par 5. Five eastern bluebird (sialia sialis) boxes - of 25 on the courseare found on this hole alone. Bluebirds are beneficial because they feed on cutworms, grasshoppers and other flying insects, as well as the abundant fruits and berries.

This par 3 plays downhill. Hit enough club to take the water out of play. There is plenty of room over the green. Watch out for the sucker pin placement.

On this short dogleg right, long hitters can carry the bunker on the right, but out of bounds is in play to the right of the cart path. The safe play is to lay up just short of the bunkers. Missing this narrow green long or left will leave you with a very difficult pitch shot.

If you manage to avoid the water and fairway bunkers off the tee, you will have a chance to get home in two. Large bunkers guard the entrance to the green.

The 7-acre pond bordering this par 5 is home to many species of migratory waterfowl. Gadwall (anas strepera), mallards, wood ducks, Canada geese and bufflehead (bucephala albeola) fly in and out during the winter months to feed on herbaceous plants, aquatic insects and the occasional minnow.

This is one of the widest fairways off the tee, but long hitters can reach the water on the right. Only the most confident iron player will aim at a right pin placement.

This is the most demanding par 4 on the course. A successful tee shot between the bunkers leaves a long approach shot where water protects the right side of the green. Par is a great score.

Hit your tee shot in the landing area between the water left and the bunkers right. From there, you can take dead aim at the long, flat green.

The yardage seems to indicate a real birdie opportunity, but use your course management skills. Long hitters can reach in two, but the approach requires a perfect stroke of daring with water guarding the front and left side of this small green.

Hole location on this deep green will determine how this long par 3 will play. When the pin is back left, play safely to the middle of the putting surface.

A 13-acre wetland mitigation pond is the centerpiece of Holes 12, 13 and 14. Easily observable are species of vegetation from three different plant communities: forest, shrub-scrub and wetland...

PAR 4 HANDICAP 14

It is imperative to find the fairway from the tee on this hole. From there you will have a mid to short-iron approach to a shallow green.

From the forest community of plants, the wetland features red maples (acer rubrum), willow oaks and bald cypress (taxodium distichum). From the shrub-scrub community, we have buttonbush (cephalanthus occidentalis), rosemallow (hibiscus moscheutos) and silky dogwood (cornus amomum). From the wetland community, blue flag iris, pickerelweed and arrowhead. All were planted along the littoral shelves.

A solid tee shot will take you to the pinched waist of the fairway. Beware not to hit it too far. A back pin placement will bring the water on the right into play. Hitting toward the middle of the green is the smart play.

The banks of the Chattahoochee River to the left and a large black walnut tree to the right frame this tee shot. Play your second shot to the right side of the fairway to avoid the pine grove on the left. A short-iron approach to an elevated green remains.

This hole is all about the approach shot, most likely a mid to long-iron to a green guarded in front by bunkers and to the left by water. The collection area to the right of the green will see lots of action.

Another mitigation pond guards the left side of this green. An additional acre of littoral shelves, established with blue flag iris, arrowhead and pickerelweed, was added during construction. During summer months, these plants produce beautiful purple flowers while providing valuable oxygen to the environment.

This is the shortest hole on the course, but if you don’t place a premium on accuracy, it could be hazardous to your score. Typically, we’d suggest that you take a half club less, but if the wind is present, club selection can be very difficult.

Looking down from the elevated tee, your main focal point is the green, set within one of the property’s many mitigation ponds. The water level within these ponds can be accurately controlled through the use of gates and valves. This is another example of one technique used to ensure a balanced aquatic habitat.

The end of your round coincides with the completion of these four strong finishing holes. Let it rip off the tee. Take an extra club on the uphill approach shot.

One of four wood duck nesting boxes, strategically placed throughout the golf course, sits to the left of the tees.

The birds use these boxes as houses during the winter months. Koi (cyprinus carpio) fish may be spotted in the ponds as they were stocked when the water features were first constructed.

The Practice Facility

The incredible practice facilities at The River Club offer realistic target greens framed by bunkers and a large turf, full swing practice tee. A separate short game complex and putting green sit next to the practice tee. On the far side of the practice facility, the teaching complex offers a moderate-sized turf tee and a complete short game area which offers a great private area for learning and development.

Devin has over 10 years of professional sales experience within the hospitality and technology sectors.

Prior to joining our team, Devin spent over 10 years working for luxury clubs, resorts, and big box hotel brands such as The Ford Plantation in Richmond Hill, The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa, Westin Hilton Head Island Resort, Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach Resort, and Hilton Atlanta Downtown. Most recently, Devin spent two years with Salesforce.

His passion is serving others and creating lasting relationships and he brings these skills to the team at The River Club. Devin lives in Buford and enjoys sports, the mountains, and being with his family and two dogs during his free time.

Making a Start Time

Starting times are not a required part of the lifestyle at The River Club, however the golf operations team does accept them. We encourage members who intend to play with guests, or who are playing with fellow members in a sizable group, to make starting times in advance of the intended day of play. Advantages to making a starting time include better organization for your group by the golf operations team and delivery of the names of your guests to the Greeters Cottage for gate access before the day of play. Those members who make a starting time will always get priority over any walk-up play. Starting times can be made by calling the Golf Shop at 770-271-2582.

Getting on the Golf Course

When you wish to play golf (with or without a starting time), please consult a member of the golf services team or the professional team and they will advise you when it is best to head out on the golf course. All play shall start on Hole #1, unless otherwise advised. Play-off of Hole #10 may be offered depending on business levels and pace of play, at the discretion of the professional team only.

Golf Services

Our golf services team is always available to make you and your guests’ experience, on and off the course, personalized and exceptional. Our team will perform services such as helping you with the transportation of your golf bag to/from your car, cleaning your golf clubs, maintaining the practice facility, providing golf carts for on-course use, and personalizing your golfing experience in any way possible!

Cell Phone Usage

FAQs

The River Club understands that cell phones are a part of everyday life. We also believe we have a beautiful and peaceful setting for your leisure time. We would like to ask you to please turn your phones to silent or vibrate and refrain from using them at the practice facility. We also ask that you use your best judgment and not allow your phone to interrupt your playing partners or your pace of play while on the golf course. We appreciate your thoughtful consideration of others. Please note that cell phones are prohibited from being used in the men’s lounge, Lodge lounge, and Lodge dining rooms.

Rental Clubs

Rental clubs are offered in the Golf Shop for a fee. All golfers are required to have their own bag at all times. Rental clubs are available in right or left handed and in regular, stiff, and ladies flexes. Rental club fees are $45 per set for 18 holes and $25 per set for 9 holes.

Establishing a Personal Locker

Personal lockers are available in both the men’s and ladies’ locker rooms. The Locker Room Manager is at your service and will set you up with everything you need. The locker of your choice will come with a custom nameplate, unlimited shoe service, and a great selection of personal hygiene products available at your disposal. Both locker rooms include steam showers and all the amenities you will need to clean up and look your best. Guest lockers are available for your clients, friends, or family in need.

The personal locker fee is $240 per member annually ($20 per month) which will be automatically billed to your account.

Establishing Bag Storage

Bag storage is a first-class service offered to all golf members who play routinely and wish not to have to transport their clubs constantly. Bags in The River Club storage room are assigned their own spot and are locked and secured overnight. When a bag storing member makes a starting time, your bag will automatically be pulled and placed on a golf cart which will be waiting for you at the practice facility upon your arrival. If you wish to practice or play an unscheduled round, we encourage you to please call the Golf Shop (770-271-2582) on your way to the Club to inform us, and our team will have your clubs pulled and ready to go. All clubs are cleaned after use. Shaft identification labels are also included in the storage program.

Locker Room Shoe Service

The Locker Room Manager offers first-class shoe service that will ensure that both your street shoes and your golf shoes are in great condition. He offers daily cleaning, new spikes, polishing, and more! Locker holders may leave their shoes on the floor in front of their locker or see the Locker Room Manager to customize your shoe service!

Gratuity Policy

FAQs

Cash gratuity is not required or expected in any area of the Club but is accepted for exceptional service.

Golf Services – Cash gratuity is pooled daily among all golf services team members for fairness.

Food & Beverages Areas – A 20% service charge is automatically added to your food and beverage ticket. A percentage of this service charge goes back to the applicable server in addition to their hourly rate. Additional gratuity above the service charge is not expected but allowed for exceptional service.

Establishing a USGA GHIN Handicap

GHIN handicaps are encouraged for all members no matter the skill level. Handicaps are a great way for you to track your ability as well as compete on an equal playing field with fellow members/guests. Members are required to maintain a GHIN handicap if they wish to play in member golf events. The River Club does have a handicap policy which will be sent out annually. Following the handicap policy will guarantee that everyone is making the correct adjustments and posting accurate scores. All scores are posted by the professional team and all scorecards must be submitted to the Golf Shop or the after-hours scorecard drop box outside of the Golf Shop. If you are out of town or play away from The River Club, you may take a picture of the scorecard and email it to Head Golf Professional, Alex Sutton (asutton@theriverclub-ga.com) or bring the card back to the Golf Shop on your next visit. Handicap revisions take place on the 1st day and the 15th day of each month.
