The region is a meeting place for Eastern and Western culture, and it is where Italian missionary Matteo Ricci brought the first chiming clock to Chinese Emperor Wanli. There, guests can witness an array of antique clocks as well as precious watches.

After sightseeing during daytime, you can still explore the fancy world before sleeping. We had an in-depth interview with President of Kering Greater China, Cai Jinqing, to learn more about the businesswomen’s prospective of Asia’s luxury industry.

The 66th Suncity Group Macau Grand Prix will take place from November 14 to 17.

The Macau Grand Prix is contested on one of the most challenging circuits in the world, due to its complicated characteristics – a combination of fast straights and tight corners, with a minimum width of only seven metres on this demanding street circuit.

This year, the Grand Prix will continue to incorporate six races, including three worldclass events: the Formula 3 Macau Grand PrixFIA F3 World Cup, the SJM Macau GT Cup-FIA GT World Cup and the Macau Guia Race. In addition to the above events, the three headline races include the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix-53rd edition - 53rd Edition, together with the Food 4U Macau Touring Car Cup and the Greater Bay Area GT Cup, the races will create an exciting and diverse programme of events. 澳门精华 | 2019年 10月- 11月 | 11

For the Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix-FIA F3 World Cup, this year audiences can marvel at the cars used in the FIA Formula 3 Championship for the first time. The new car is more powerful than its predecessor, however, the single-chassis, single-engine 380hp car incorporates the latest FIA safety features, including a halo and anti-intrusion panels. It is expected that the majority of the grid for Macau will be made up of FIA Formula 3 Championship drivers.

In order to accommodate these powerful cars, the 6.2km Guia Circuit will be upgraded to an FIA Grade II homologated track.

The Macau Touring Car Cup will also welcome a total of 36 racers to compete in Macau.

Moreover, electronic flags will be implemented this year to supplement manual flag signals.A new type of safety crash barrier recommended by the FIA will be installed at the Reservoir Stand and Mandarin Oriental bends, with the buffer zone at Lisboa Bend to be increased.

Tickets for the 66th Suncity Group Macau Grand Prix are already on sale. This year, prices for the practice days (14-15 November) remains unchanged at MOP50. Prices for the event days (16-17 November) have increased slightly and range from MOP400 to MOP1,000. In addition, anyone who holds a valid student card in Macau may purchase tickets for the event at Reservoir Stand at MOP150.

THE 19TH MACAU FOOD FESTIVAL Macau Food Festival is also returning. Between November 8-24, tourists can visit the Praça do Lago Sai Van square to enjoy countless delicious treats after watching exciting races.

The food festival will comprise several sections, including Asian, Southeast Asian, European, Chinese and local cuisine, spread across more than 100 booths. A wide array of choices from seafood, meat, drinks and desserts will be available to choose from. This year, the festival has invited a selection of good restaurant from Hokkaido, Japan, creating a Hokkaido village for tourist and locals to taste authentic Japanese flavours.

To enhance the atmosphere, there will also be performances and game stalls for tourists and locals to explore. 쐽

unning from October 27 to January 16 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the exhibition "Lucian Freud: The Self-portraits" is the largest display of the artist’s

self-portraits to ever take place. Gathering more than 50 works from the famous German-born British painter, the exhibit follows the journey of his work over seven decades. Split into six sections, it reflects his development as a painter, from the first self-portrait, created in 1939, to the last, 64 years later.

There are few 20-century artists that reveal as much consistency in self-portrayal as Lucian Freud, which lends his work a high level of realism. This exhibit also affords an interesting look at the ageing process and how the artist himself deals with it in artistic terms.

Besides the organisation by the Royal Academy of Arts, this exhibit also has the collaboration of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

he first time most people heard the name Eric Fok was in 2013. The artworks of the young Macau boy were selected to be exhibited that year at the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition, a world-famous art event. Being selected for this showing is the highest honour in the world of illustration. Now, he is one of few fulltime artists in the region.

Fok was born and raised in Macau. During his childhood, watching cartoons on TV and reading comics were the best forms of entertainment for him. At that time, young Fok began copying the characters of the cartoons by himself, since painting classes were not as popular then as they are today. Thanks to a teacher at his middle school, he joined a sculpting summer school and met his mentor, Mr Wong Kalong. “When I worked as an assistant for Mr Wong, he taught me a lot and I got many opportunities to do mural paintings.” Mr Wong also influenced Fok’s future plans. “He gave me hope that I could be a fulltime artist.

My parents didn’t agree with me at that time.

Most parents in Macau want their children to find a stable job. In order to find a common ground, I chose to study Visual Arts-Fine Art at the Macau Polytechnic Institute. After graduation, I could be an art teacher, which is also a good job,” Fok recalled.

His junior year at the university was a defining moment: “At that time, I felt stressed when I had to decide the direction of my life. I knew if I found a fulltime job after

graduation, I might not have much time to create. I wanted to build my portfolio before graduating.” From then on, he began sending his works to different international competitions and achieved many positive results.

The “Paradise” series is Fok’s benchmark work, which has been touring in New York, Italy, Japan, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The selected artworks at the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition also came from this series. In it, the artist pre-treats the drawing paper with tea and acrylic to create an antique effect, which makes the painting look like a map from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Local elements and his roots, as well as daily life are juxtaposed to the dreamy and fantastical features in works inspired by the past, but straight from the artist’s mind. Fok uses meticulous brushwork to integrate the ancient map of Macau with new constructions. It is a combination of tradition and modernity.

“Around 2011-2012, I got a job doing mural paintings, near Barrier Gate. Macau was changing rapidly at that time; there were many land-reclamation projects. I really wanted to capture these moments through drawing.

the maps. I want to express my ideas through my works to attract more awareness to the changes in Macau,” Fok explained. “I made a sketch on a small paper and showed it to my mentor. He really loved my idea and gave me some good advice, which shaped my style.”

This series is named with numbers, such as “Paradise – 1557”, a huge painting which is part of the MGM Cotai collection. “I want to let audiences come up with their own feeling about my works through the paintings. I don’t want to impede their imagination with the titles,” he explained.

The artist doesn’t feel complacency about his success with the “Paradise" series. His most recent creations reveal more of his inner thoughts. “Drawing is an important way for me to express my ideas. Every day, there are many different social issues, such as what is happening in Hong Kong these days. These things will change, but if I draw them on the paper, then they will be immortalised,” Fok said.

But let’s return to our first question – Fok believes Macau doesn’t have a mature art market. “Macau only has buyers, not collectors.

Collectors will gather an array of one artist’s works. For artists, it is important to have collectors,” he said. “It takes time to develop.

When compared to nearby cities like Hong Kong, our economic advance started very late.

But we still have hope.”

It has been six years since he achieved worldwide recognition from international events. Today, the artist admits, this honour is absolutely a milestone in his career, but it won’t be the highest peak of his time. “My life goal is to live on in international art history and I am trying my best to achieve that,” Fok said. 쐽

he Macau Timepiece Museum is the first and only timepiece museum in Asia. The spoil features a range of private collections from watch connoisseurs, including Mr Fong Wing Ngai, who is also the curator of this museum.

Influenced by his father, Mr Fong has had an enthusiasm for timepieces since he was young.

“When I got my first job, I used the salary to buy a watch and started my collection,” he said.

如爱彼皇家橡树离岸型计时腕表奥尼尔特 别 版 、杰 拉 德 ·尊 达 Octo 陀 飞 轮 逆 时 跳 表 、 De Bethune DB28 等。 “钟表的保养是我最先遇到的问题，也是 我最大的担忧，因为我不擅长钟表维修。因 此我邀请了我的良师益友霍飞乐先生担任博 物馆的顾问。他是澳门本地的制表师，也是 经 验 丰 富 的 古 董 钟 表 修 复 师 和 收 藏 家 ，”方 先生解释说。博物馆也有展出霍先生的作品 ——霍氏 1 号，这是世界上唯一一只悬浮式 陀 飞 轮 腕 表 。 霍 氏 1 号 最 初 在 2002 年 设 计 ， 原先的陀飞轮机芯在 2005 年制造，后来修改 成 新 的 悬 浮 式 陀 飞 轮 并 在 2017 年获得专利， 整只腕表在 2018 年完工。这是全球首创的一 种 新 型 陀 飞 轮 ， 已 获 得 中 国 和 国 际 PCT 专 利，无框设计，不带有陀飞轮笼框，也没有 传 统 的 桥 板 ，从 而 能 抵 消 重 力 引 起 的 误 差 。

Fong started to prepare for the opening of this museum in March 2018. Six months later, it was officially inaugurated, very close to Macau’s landmark Ruins of St. Paul’s complex.

“At the beginning, I didn’t promote it, because it is the first timepiece museum in the world and we didn't have much experience,” said Fong. “I worked in the watches’ placement for a long time, and now it is the best and most sensible arrangement.”

Now, the museum is showcasing more than 100 precious timepieces and chronometers, and welcomes around 700-800 tourists a day. The two-story building consists of five sections, Panerai, antique clocks, contemporary watches, collectors’ private collections and an interactive area. Guests can discover an array of very rare,

limited watches here, such as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph Shaquille O'Neal Special Edition, the Gérald Genta Octo Tourbillon Retrograde Hours, the De Bethune DB28, and more.

“The maintenance of watches was the initial problem and my main concern, because I am not a specialist of clock and watch repairing. I invited my friend and mentor, Mr Huo Feile, a local Macau watchmaker and a veteran antique timepiece restorer and collector to be the consultant of our museum,” explained the collector. The museum also displays Mr Huo’s work, Huo’s Opus One, the only floating tourbillon wristwatch in the world. It was first designed in 2002, and the original tourbillon movement was made in 2005, then modified

to Chinese Emperor Wanli. In order to let more people remember this history, Mr Fong also exhibits a range of antique clocks and pocket watches.

“In the old days, clocks were the mandatory item to help missionaries preach in Mainland China. You can find the cross and bible on the antique clocks and watches,” he explained.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Macau’s return to China, Mr Fong worked with Mr Huo to create two watches, planed to launch in October. “The price is reasonable and I hope more people can get the watch.”

Among many items, there is an area with an emphasis on luxury Italian watch manufacturer Panerai. As a die-hard fan of Panerai, Fong has

some 60 watches on display at the museum.

“Panerai is a special brand. In 2000, I made a lot of changes in my collection and started to buy big dial watches. Panerai is the pioneer manufacturer of this type of watch. They used to make watches for the navy; it’s a mysterious brand,” said Fong.

The depth of the collection can be seen on the Panerai Historical Archive. “The brand made their first watch in 1936. I was very curious about the time before 1993, when the brand started to sell watches,” he revealed.

Panerai lovers can look back into the history of the brand from the very rare Panerai Reference 3646 Type C and Type D, which are the first-generation aluminium sandwich dials created by Panerai for the Italian Navy.

Reference 3646 was made by Rolex for Panerai, in production from 1938 until the 1950s, supplied to the Italian Royal Navy and German Navy, and produced in several versions classified from Type A to Type G; only 211 pieces are known to this day.

The curator designed the interactive area for events with watch brands and auction houses.

Recently, Panerai held a private event here and received positive reviews. “I am very happy to be the platform to introduce more people to Panerai,” Fong said.

“It is an opportunity to promote this very interesting museum. It's very educational and it helps us know a little bit of our history. It's quite a nice environment to invite our guests,” said Julio Sato, Panerai’s Managing Director of NEA.

udor launched its first diving watch, the Oyster Prince Submariner, in 1954, just one year after Rolex, its sister brand, presented its Submariner. The watch, christened with the reference 7922, would become the precursor of a type of watch that would greatly contribute to the prestige of the brand.

With a 37mm case, it held all the ingredients that were considered indispensable in a watch for diving professionals: durability, reliability, precision and water-tightness of up to 100 metres. All of these technical qualities, combined with a very appealing price tag, were the reasons that contributed toward the popularity of this instrument in the professional field for which it had been conceived. The Submariner evolved at the speed of the small improvements, which culminated in the reference 7928, launched in the second half of the 1960s. Its main adjustments were the round crown guards and astonishing water-tightness that reached 200 metres.

The year 1969 marked the birth of the second generation of the Tudor Submariner, with the introduction of two new references – the 7016 and the 7021. Besides the new calibers, for the first time, the dials featured square markers and hands that, due to their unusual shape, would later be known as “snowflakes” among collectors and enthusiasts.

By the ‘90s, the watch became known as the “snowflake” Submariner, because it looked vaguely like a flake of snow. Actually, it was the need to create the largest surface possible so that the luminescent material could be applied and subsequently legible (indispensable in this type of watch) that gave it this appearance, which is today one of the main trademarks of the Swiss brand. Used exclusively in Tudor’s diving watches, adopted by the diving teams of some of the world’s most powerful navies, the “snowflake” configuration was abandoned in the mid-‘80s and returned in 2012 as a key design element in two of Tudor’s main lines, Black Bay and Pelagos, which continue the Submariner legacy. 쐽

hen Jean-Claude Ellena arrived at the interview with Essential, before presenting his latest perfume for Frédéric Malle at Pitti Fragranze in Florence, his amiability could not be further from the cult of personality that many figures in the fashion and luxury industry usually advocate. Accessible and communicative, the French perfumer is a living legend of haute perfumery, one of the most admired amongst his peers and followed religiously by aficionados of the olfactory world.

Born in 1947 in Grasse, the birthplace of French haute perfumery, he began his career in the industry as a teenager, first working locally for Antoine Chiris as an apprentice at his essential oils factory, then joining the Givaudan Perfumery School in Geneva in 1968.

His father, also a perfumer, would eventually play a key role in arousing the curiosity of young Ellena. “I loved my father, but he didn't talk about work at home because my mother wasn't interested in perfumery. I believe that that was one of the main reasons that led me to be a perfumer; I wanted to find out what my father was doing all day,” he laughs. However, it was one of the great French perfumers of the 20th century, Edmond Roudnitska, who would lead him to see perfumery as an intellectual exercise and not merely chemistry. “Edmond was very important; he was the first to write about the thinking, philosophy and ethics of perfumery.

When I read his book, I immediately identified with his way of thinking,” says Ellena. “Because I was very shy at the time, I only made contact with Roudnitska a few years later. After talking

to him on the phone, I knocked on his door.

When he saw me, he opened the door and said, 'You stink', referring to the musk of the detergent on my clothes. The next day I returned with the same attire, and he welcomed me in. He talked about many things, but what struck me most was his idea of simplicity in perfumery.”

Transmitting a clear message through a perfume was something that united Ellena and his mentor and friend, but also the philosophical way in which they both saw perfumery, something that became a recurring theme in their conversations over the years. At the 1952 Le parfum dans le système des Beaux Arts conference, Roudnitska noted that “perfume composition is abstract art par excellence, hence its complexity, but also par excellence in providing intellectual pleasure to all who know how to appreciate it".

For the French perfumer, an artist has to be a good artisan. This means that ideas evolve with his daily work in the laboratory, but the decision to hold himself responsible for the final result of a perfume is what makes his perfumery an art, just like a painter decides when his work is completed. This creative freedom was what Ellena experienced at Hermès during his 12 years as head perfumer of the French house.

“Like a couturier who has to create a style of clothing, I lent my style to Hermès and it worked. It was hard work, but I was so happy to develop it that I never felt that I was truly working,” says Ellena.

At Hermès, he managed to create a unique aesthetic vision, something similar to what many niche brands are currently doing on the market.

The intellectual process around the development of a new perfume is essential for Ellena, but so is his restlessness and constant self-criticism. “This work takes a long time to mature, so when I am asked for a sample for the next day, I immediately say that it is impossible.

There are perfumers who make 200 perfumes a year; I only make four.”

Without the pressure of market testing, and in full collaboration with the then CEO of Hermès Perfumes, Veronique Gautier, Ellena began paving a unique path in the French maison, where simplicity became the watchword, setting aside unnecessary ingredients and going straight to the point of arousing the consumer's sense of smell and not just pleasing them. "I don't believe in consumer panels. They are just there to reassure us, but in the end they don’t solve anything. They tell us what people like, but not what they want. Pleasing people is not enough; we have to challenge them, to create a desire, to make them want a certain perfume. Desire lasts longer, mere pleasure is ephemeral.”

During his time at Hermès, from 2004 to 2016, the Frenchman developed some of his most recognised perfumes, such as Terre and Kelly Calèche, but his first big hit was First for Van Cleef & Arpels in 1976. Romantic in style, this perfume (still on the market) is far from Ellena's signature minimalism and is made with over 160 ingredients. "It is a very rich and

complex formula, reflecting a time when it was thought that the more complicated the perfume, the better the perfumer," reveals Ellena. Conversely, the Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert was his first big statement as a perfumer who sought to convey a pure, gimmick-free message.

Launched by Bulgari in 1993, the perfume conceptually reflects the finesse and intensity of green tea.

By favouring synthetic over natural molecules, Ellena chooses this path not only to be more concise, but also to challenge himself.

Through synthetics he can reproduce nature, avoiding the olfactory distraction that many natural ingredients provide. “The shorter the formulas, the greater the challenge,” he states. “I’m known for simplicity; I try to get straight to the point and convey something very strong. When someone smells something I created, I hope they understand what I tried to do. It's not confusing, it's very light and objective,” he confides.

Parfumeur, a niche brand acquired by Puig in 2015. Launched at the start of the Millennium, the idea behind its creation came when Ellena was travelling along the islands in the Indian Ocean. “I love to travel, and when I do I always go to the local botanical gardens looking for inspiration. On one of those occasions, on Réunion Island, I smelt a flower that had the aroma of flour. It was something that transported me to the kitchen – there is something erotic and sexy about a woman making pasta – and that was my inspiration.” His simple, modern formula has only 10 ingredients, the shortest Ellena has ever developed, in a celebration of the starchy aroma of the small flower of the Ruizia Cordata tree, with notes of iris, musk and wheat.

reflections of reality, but illusions, as if it were a dream. “My perfumes are never reality, because reality is not interesting. I'm a liar, an illusionist. My creations are a representation of what I feel, the way I see a place. For example, in the perfume Un Jardin sur le Nil for Hermès, it all started with the scent of mango, but if it were just that it would not be interesting. We have to develop the concept and go further, create a story.”

His latest creation, Rose & Cuir for Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, returns to the theme of containment, using only 15 ingredients. While claiming that a perfume should be like “a gentle caress: nothing should shock, nothing should scream”, Ellena went a step further with Rose & Cuir. The first perfume he developed for Frédéric Malle, after his years at Hermès, the fragrance marks his return to the use of more natural ingredients in his formulas, resulting in a deep and striking scent. With the note of leather as a base, using the IsoButyl Quinoline molecule, the perfume finds its balance between sobriety and freshness with the scent of rose, obtained without using the essence of the flower because, according to Ellena, it added nothing to the final result.

With this collaboration with Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, and taking on the position of olfactory director of Le Couvent des Minimes, where he chooses the perfumes that are part of the brand's collection, Ellena returns to the world of niche perfumery, which currently represents almost a tenth of market. The perfumer sees no difference between the perfumes devel-

oped by the big brands like Hermès and the niche brands that proliferate on the market. "I don’t care about the abundance of niche brands.

The worst ones will end, the good ones will remain, but the same will happen in the big industry," he says, laughing, adding that "a niche is just that; there is no way of competing with L'Oréal, LVMH or Puig, they are very powerful economically. There are many amateurs du parfum and the niche serves these people, who no longer go to the big brands. They want something different and unique, they refuse mass luxury. However, we have different genres of niche perfumery brands. Some are simply small and lack quality.”

After more than half a century working in the perfume industry, the Frenchman has already found the natural successor to his legacy of simplicity, restraint and elegance: his daughter and independent perfumer, Celine Ellena, with whom he works regularly. “She has my mentality, she realises that it is not necessary to have many products in a formula, that you can work with fewer elements. My daughter has her own personality as a perfumer and is not afraid to showcase her creations.”

At the age of 72, Jean-Claude Ellena shows no sign of slowing down. Because he has nothing to prove to anyone, the perfumer is freer than ever, exploring new approaches to perfumery, as demonstrated at Rose & Cuir. It’s always been his imperative to never copy himself and not fall into the commonplace. The 21 kilometre three-lane highway is lined with crash barriers and rescue services are available at the north and south ends. Before the test, special mats were used to clean residues, stones and grit.

On August 2nd, Andy Wallace, Bugatti’s famous test driver, and winner of the 1998 Le Mans 24 Hours, looked to add another notch to his records belt. In 1998, Wallace reached 391km/h in a McLaren F1 on the same track, setting a record that stood until the Veyron

smashed it to pieces in 2010 with a recorded run of 434km/h.

In Wallace’s own words: ‘An incredible speed. It’s inconceivable that a car would be capable of this. But the Chiron was well prepared and I felt very safe. Even at the first attempt I felt this would work. The Chiron ran perfectly and the track and weather conditions were ideal. The whole team did a fantastic job’.

After a warm-up lap, Wallace nudged 200km/h out of the north curve onto the 8.8 mile straight. For 70 seconds he kept the throttle to the floor, covering 136 metres per second at

300 mph. It’s not car travel, it’s time travel. The record run was recorded by a sealed GPS box, the certificate issued by SGS-TUV Saar.

But what about the car itself? Under the direction of Bugatti’s Head of Development Stefan Ellrott, and in partnership with Dallara and Michelin, a team of engineers from multiple disciplines prepared a pre-production unit of the Chiron Super Sport 300+ with increased safety features, including six-point belts and an additional safety cell. The drag at the rear was improved and aerodynamic stall reduced by over 40%. The body of the 300+ is made of exposed, jet-black carbon fibre adorned with Jet Orange racing stripes. Inside, the fastest Chiron of all is dominated by black carbon, leather and Alcantara in Beluga Black, complemented by colour highlights in Jet Orange. All interior trim parts have a black anodised finish.

The 300+ is the ultimate version of the Chiron, itself the ultimate in luxury and performance in the automotive world. Powered by a quad-turbo W-shaped 16 cylinder engine – basically two V8s bolted together – with 8 litres of capacity, the Super Sport produces 1600

horse power – 100 more than the regular car – and, Bugatti says, was developed to sustain constant traveling speeds above 420km/h. There are four banks of four cylinders sharing a common crankshaft; the upper two have a 90-degree angle, the lower ones 105. The four existing turbos work in groups of two. The first ones are constantly spinning, fed by eight exhausts to minimise lag, whereas the other two have dedicated waste valves that work depending on throttle position and rev range.

The Chiron is four-wheel drive and features a double-clutch transmission developed especially by British firm Ricardo. Performance is out of this world: beyond a world record top speed, 0-100km/h takes a face bending 2.5 seconds, 200km/h come up four seconds later and after 13.6 seconds the car will be showing 300km/h.

The tyres, developed especially for the Chiron 300+ have to withstand 5300 G and still be street legal. At 300mph, they rotate at 4100 rpm. Taken to the limit, they can hold speeds of up to 511km/h. Michelin must be proud: the achievements of the Chiron, as of the Veyron before it, are only possible if tyre technology can keep up.

500 units of the Chiron will be built, including 30 Super Sport 300+. Depending on the market and the taxes, each Chiron costs something between €2.5M and €4M. Prices for the Super Sport hang around the €5M mark and they are likely all sold out.

More than just a car, the Chiron Super Sport 300+ is a piece of automotive artistry and very possibly the last purely internal combustion car to achieve such speeds without the help of some kind of electric aids. It is, therefore, a piece of history and Bugatti must be applauded for showing us what a team of determined people with one common goal can achieve.

That probably no Super Sport owner will ever achieve Wallace’s speed is beyond the point. Owning one is a bit like owning the intangible. One’s own private time machine. 쐽

hile the world was trying to understand what the 1600 horse power of the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ meant, Lotus launched something called the Evija. And the Bugatti was put aside for a minute.

The Evija is Lotus’ new owners, Chinese group Geely (famous for transforming Volvo from left-field choice into global player in under a decade) way of saying ‘we are here; we are going to shake things up’.

Unlike any other Lotus in history, the Evija does not use an internal combustion engine. It’s a pure EV. Also, unlike most EVs, it’s not built to trundle around city streets saving the planet from CO2 – it is built to be the most powerful car in the world. That is why it produces 2000 horse power and 1700 Nm of torque. After writing about the Bugatti, I wonder how tyres will cope with that, but moving on.

Because it is still a prototype, Lotus is not releasing official figures yet, but the targets that are being set seem pretty absurd (in a good way): 0-100km in under 3 seconds may sound Bugatti-like, but what about 0-300km/h in under 9 seconds? That is almost 5 seconds faster than the Super Sport 300+ manages. If Lotus can make it, it will be an outstanding achievement. That is the power of instant torque – acceleration is relentless and the only compromise is top speed; it could never exceed those of a massively powerful internal combustion engine.

Evija – pronounced Ew-eye-ah – means ‘first in existence’ or, roughly translated from Hebrew, ‘living, to breathe’. As with all Lotus in history, it starts with an E but from there, not much is Lotus as we know it.

130 units will be built at around €2M and the British firm says that the Evija will have a range of 250 miles and be able to be 100% recharged in 18 minutes through a 350kW supercharger.

The world is changing and so is Lotus. But whoever thought they would end the adrenaline of speed by banning internal combustion engines must be feeling pretty down right now.

A new era is dawning. Four-figure horsepower is here to stay. Welcome to the world of the electric hypercar. 쐽

efore sitting down to do this in-depth interview, Cai Jinqing had a photoshoot at Kering’s Hong Kong office, which has a stunning bird's-eye view of the city and seascape.

Confidence and calm was our first impression of her. Later, we understood this confidence is the key to managing the huge market of Kering Greater China.

Cai was born and raised in Beijing and was a Chemistry undergraduate student at Beijing University between 1986-1989, before pursuing her education overseas. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Wellesley College, in Massachusetts, USA, and a Master’s in Public Affairs from Woodrow Wilson School of International and Public Affairs, at Princeton University. “When I was in middle school, I was fascinated by science subjects, which were highly regarded at that time. I am always eager to do everything well and I had the chance to study Chemistry at one of the best University in China,” she said. “Meanwhile, I have been interested in art and culture since I was very young. When I got opportunity to choose subjects again in the USA, I thought about what I really loved. That’s why I chose economics and public affairs.”

In 2012, Cai joined the leading auction house Christie’s as the first managing director of Christie’s China. “At that time, Christie’s came to me. I thought it was a really great opportunity to have a job that related to my interests,” she explains. She was appointed president of Christie’s China in 2014 and then chairwoman in 2016.

Last year, international luxury conglomerate Kering Group – which owns Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Belenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Brioni, Boucheron and more – was looking for a leader for Greater China, the fasted growing market in the world. Cai was considered as the best candidate – she is smart and competent, knowledgeable about China’s market and history and is an expert in art and culture. “I felt encouraged when Kering appointed me as president for Great China. It was an affirmation of past works. Honestly, crossing industries was also a challenge for me.

But I love challenges and I have the confidence to overcome them.”

Thanks to her confidence, this powerful woman proves it is possible for women to achieve work-life balance. In parallel with her new role at Kering Greater China, Cai Jinqing retains a consulting role at Christie’s, serving as chairwoman of the company’s Asia Advisory Board. She is also on the international advisory board of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and serves as a board member of Teach for China, a non-profit organization focusing on education inequality in the country. “I believe everybody has infinite potential and everybody can squeeze the time out if they want to. In

some way, I feel confident about my life. I can have my time, my job under control. Even when I meet a challenge, I still have the confidence to overcome it. That’s why I can keep calm and positive all the time,” Cai explained. “Women empowerment is an important part of Kering’s culture. After all, 60% of our board members and 63% of employees are female. This is a really inspiring thing for me.” As a leader of a big group, she admits that rather than managing staff, she is more like a talent scout to explore the strength and potential of each brand and employee.

After joining Kering, the first and most important strategy she focused on was promoting sustainable luxury. “As our CEO and Chairman François-Henri Pinault said, ‘Luxury and sustainability are one and the same’. I am really lucky to work in a company that shares that same philosophy with me. In the past few years, I worked with different association to support ecological sustainability,” she said.

Kering Greater China launched the K Generation Award to fast-track sustainable innovation within the luxury and apparel sectors. The award programme identifies promising start-ups and technologies in China that have the potential to disrupt the current textile value chain to create a positive environmental and social impact. “We want to set up a platform for the whole industry to get involved in sustainability. In October, we will announce the winners during our ceremony in Shanghai. In the past ten months, we held several road shows in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, gathering many enterprises and venture funds,” Cai revealed. 澳门精华 | 2019年 10月- 11月 | 63

The China and Asian markets are growing very fast. Millennials have become the main consumers of luxury goods. In order to attract these young patrons, the group has made a lot of efforts: To attract and keep millennials customers, we must offer them an incomparable experience and emotional engagement.

Furthermore, Kering supports an array of artistic and cultural events to allow customers to explore the philosophy and inspirations of the designers. Last year, Gucci sponsored an exhibition titled “The Artist is Present”, in Shanghai, which was a great success.

Mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau are playing special and important roles in

the group’s strategy. The president said that customers in the Hong Kong and Macau markets not only come from local but also global customers. To attract these international clients, the group needs to understand and listen to the local markets and empower strong local team to ensure messaging resonates appropriately for the audience.

The Asian markets are changing rapidly and culturally diverse. China market is a key driver for our growth in the region. To maintain and increase market share, the group must remain vibrant. “Innovation is a key part of Kering’s DNA. hopping, loving fashion and being up to date with the latest trends is no longer enough. Consumption habits are changing gradually, uniting the older and younger generations. While the first remember the consumption dynamic of 30 or 40 years ago, the latter are learning different ways to consume with the intention of protecting the planet. Those brands with the finger on the pulse are already showing behavioural changes – production methods, the use of organic/biological materials, among other measures – while still keeping the seasonal cycle of shows and collections. fashion and keeping up with the trends. The idea, rather, is to keep offering solutions for everyone who likes fashion, without further damaging the planet because of it. And so brands, both premium and luxury, are playing an increasingly active role on the subject.

Generally speaking, the fall/winter collections incorporate darker patterns and colours, a mix of textures and potentially heavier fabrics, as the Western climate so dictates (at least for the moment). The more northern European countries have always been more receptive to more open colours in the winter and the southern more closed (due to cultural, religious and political reasons), but the landscape seems to be changing, as seen in the collections of various labels. Anna Sui coherently blends bright colours with equally exuberant patterns, whose theme evokes the charismatic 1960s, inspired by the style of the actress Anna Karina.

The human side of Pierpaolo Piccioli, the designer of Valentino, well aware of the talent of the professionals working on his team, led him to create a collection that draws on “celebration, dreams and emotion”. The designer stresses: “My big aim is to change the perception of luxury from a certain lifestyle to a community of people who share values.” The

inspiration behind putting together this collection was 19th-century prints with the theme of love and poetry as the backdrop – a collection that explores romanticism while respecting the volume and cut of each piece.

The collection from veteran Vivienne Westwood is a mixture between trends and social activism. Actually, as some international fashion journalists point out, the message of the collection gets lost, although there are very interesting ideas such as the suits, the pants and the coats.

Through its collections, the brand hopes to appeal to the conscience of the political injustices of today’s world leaders.

Worthy of mention is the work that designer Jonathan Anderson is doing at Loewe, who is recovering the brand’s DNA founded on the sophistication of the lines and materials, showing that the brand is attentive to the wishes of its consumers. Rather than recovering trends from a distant past – the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries –, it is about transforming past into present with historical content.

With the gauntlet laid down by the group to André Oliveira, CEO and head designer of Circu, the brand was created in 2015 to make childhood fantasies come true. “Achieving the essence of this project required in-depth research into the world of children, from which I drew inspiration. I went back to my childhood memories through to today to not only identify what I retained, but to also understand the evolution of the trends in this sector. Circu was the realisation of a true personal dream, which is actually that of all children: to make their fantasies come true and make their world more magical. It is a brand full of passion and which mirrors the beauty, importance and naivety of the world of children,” reveals André Oliveira.

Looking at the Circu collection, it is easy to see the inspiration behind its pieces, which enthral the youngsters but also their parents. The world of Disney is one of the brand’s big reference points, and pieces such as the Teepee

Room and the Little Mermaid bed are a reflection of that exactly. The interactive Rocky Rocket chair, for example, evokes the exciting adventures of Tintin on the Moon, while the Bun Van bed recreates the iconic Volkswagen Camper van. As such, associating pieces developed for playing and daydreaming with luxury finishes is one of the main challenges for the brand. “The use of the pieces, whether by the parents or by the children, is one of the key factors that I bear in mind when I create the concept. Lastly comes a concern with the choice of materials and finishes, which is crucial for the variables of luxury, imagination and comfort to come together in perfect harmony.”

In a market where the approach to children’s brands is much more conventional, Circu stands out for the extravagance of its collections and for following the same aesthetic line that defines other brands in the group, as André Oliveira explains to us: “If we look at it closely, most of the Circu collection shows that, at the base of the creative process, there is a maximalist image, but the final result stands out for its exclusive design and an aesthetic that we can consider minimalist. t first opened its doors in 1887, at the hands of the Sarkies brothers, the renowned Armenian hoteliers who also built other luxury hotels in the region. Christened Raffles, in tribute to Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, it quickly became one of the finest hotels in the region and the most iconic symbol of the city. Boasting a colonial style, to this day, it retains its original appearance and evokes the grandeur of another era. It was proclaimed a National Monument in 1987 and underwent the first significant rehabilitation work between 1989 and 1991. The emblematic six-star Raffles Singapore, the very first hotel of the renowned hotel chain, managed by the Accor Group, and owned by Katara Hospitality, has undergone a face-lift, yet preserves the highest level quality and exclusivity that have made it famous.

The scrupulous restoration work was assigned to the reputable interior designer Alexandra Champalimaud who, along with the architecture and design firm Adeas, created a refurbished and welcoming space which breathes culture, beauty and elegance while accentuating its exceptionally rich heritage.

"The new interiors evoke old Singapore, but in a contemporary way", reveals Alexandra

Champalimaud. Jon Kastl, the project manager, highlights this concept: "It was an honour to work inside a National Monument and we took this responsibility very seriously (...). We did everything we could to preserve the majority of the original historical traits - inside and outside (...). We wanted to be certain that everything that we were adding would complement the history."

The suites now have some new categories.

In addition to the State Room, Courtyard, Palm Court, Personality, Grand Hotel and Presidential, Raffles Singapore now offers another three: Residence, Promenade and Studio. The original layout was preserved: a living room, a bedroom and a bathroom. According to Alexandra

Champalimaud, the experience that a room can offer is far more important than its furnishings.

The contemporary lighting, along with the different textures and materials, such as marble, textiles, leather, and stained glass windows, bestow the 115 suites with a distinctive character.

"Each suite has its own unique signature."

The commercial area, Raffles Arcade, also bears a brand new look. There are approximately 30 different spaces representing various sectors, from retail to restaurants to lifestyle.

"Raffles was always a centre for entertainment in Singapore (...). We aimed to enhance the notion of intimate, social and charming spaces", explains Edmond Bakos, partner and general manager at Champalimaud Design. The Raffles Boutique (formerly the Raffles Gift Shop), for example, offers the most diverse souvenirs and includes Ah Teng's Café, which tantalizes with pastries, a bakery and artisanal gelato. There are also a number of other boutiques representing high-end brands such as Leica, Minotti and Rimowa. It is also in this area that we may find the new Raffles Spa, a sanctuary of tranquillity with relaxing treatments for body and soul (available for hotel guests and visitors).

In the Raffles Arcade, it is worth highlighting the Jubilee Ballroom (formerly the Jubilee Hall), with the capacity to accommodate 300 guests and ideal for hosting all sorts of events.

"We incorporated sophisticated Victorian details evocative of the origins of the space as well as some elements alluding to Singapore culture", recounts Alexandra Champalimaud.

The Great Room accentuates the social dimension of the hotel, offering a premium co-working space, the first of its kind located in a six-star hotel.

With respect to restaurants, the hotel is bursting with various excellent options. It is worth noting the restaurant Yì by Jereme Leung, which offers the flavours of genuine Asian cuisine. "It is not a fusion cuisine, but rather a cuisine that captures the essence of regional Chinese ethnic flavours", explains the chef. For meat lovers, the steakhouse Butcher's Block is also an option.

Taking into account that this was the first hotel in Singapore to hire a French chef, the renovated Raffles Singapore pays homage to this fact by offering two Michelin star chefs of French origins. Alain Ducasse launched his first restaurant in the city with BBR by Alain Ducasse. Its concept is dramatically different from everything he has done up until now, more focused on grilling with a Mediterranean influence, primarily Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and French. "I could not have imagined a better place than Raffles Singapore to present this experience for the first time. My team and I are anxious to offer the international clientele in Singapore a new gastronomic destination", he proclaims.

Anne-Sophie Pic (Maison Pic, Valence) is the other French chef selected to enrich the palate of the Raffles Singapore guests. "For me, Singapore is a very vibrant city, it is inspiring and multicultural. It reminds me of London, with all of its diversity, which enables me to create a fabulous gastronomic symbiosis", states the chef. La Dame De Pic offers a cuisine characterized by aromatic complexity and powerful flavours capable of eliciting emotions.

Raffles Singapore also offers the refurbished Tiffin Room, a space that has existed since the very beginning. This restaurant opened in 1892 and tantalizes with specialties from Northern India, served in Tiffin boxes.

ith a longstanding heritage as an interesting street full of cool eateries and stylish boutiques, Hong Kong’s Gough Street is a very quaint and up-and-coming chill-out area.

The street is now home to a new modern Middle Eastern restaurant, Bedu. The concept revolves around the nomadic wanderings of the Bedouin people, a desert-dwelling tribe who journey across North Africa and the Middle East.

“We take a lot of inspiration from the travels of nomadic Bedouin tribes, the nomads of the Middle East who spent 80% of their time in the

Their culinary traditions have been passed down through generations and have greatly shaped Middle Eastern cuisine as it’s known today,” said Corey Riches, the restaurant’s head chef. “At Bedu, it’s also about the full experience beyond the food. There’s a stronger focus on cocktails (rather than wine), the warm hospitality, and the story-telling concept introduction that forms part of customers’ experience with us.

People are encouraged to join us for a drink or snack and to just relax on their last day of the weekend with friends or family.”

Cocktails and mocktails here are crafted from seasonal produce and botanicals, which are a constant source of inspiration for chef Corey. “I try not to rely on cookbooks or Instagram because it can influence you to subconsciously copy others. My focus is to bring something unique and new to Bedu’s menu,” the chef explained. “I look at what produce is coming up in season, and consider that along with a complementary flavour combination. It’s

also important to consider the ingredients we currently use or have in season.”

Chef Corey Riches has almost 20 years’ experience working in kitchens from his home country of Australia, as well as London and Hong Kong. His knowledge and expertise span across classic French, modern Australian and Japanese, but he realised his truest love was for the flavours of the Middle East, a love that has been nurtured for more than half of his career.

“Middle Eastern food is simple yet has unique flavour profiles. The cuisine came naturally to me – the vibrancy of flavours, exotic ingredients and spices from the many regional cuisines.

And it was different from what I trained in originally from classic French, Japanese and Southeast Asian. I still remember the moment when I fell in love with a dish of pastirma with shanklish cheese and olive oil!” he recalls.

At Bedu, the chef has designed an array of delicacies from the humbleness of street food to home-cooked dishes representing the various regions that define Middle Eastern cuisine. 澳门精华 | 2019年 10月- 11月 | 103

One of the must-try dishes features charred broccoli, chilli, crispy kale and Zhoug Labneh.

“It’s a take on a traditional Yemen sauce known as Zhoug. We reduce the amount of coriander, and balance out the chilli with the addition of honey and cardamom. The broccoli is twice cooked, poached in a vegetable stock and finished over the grill to enhance and layer the flavour. Fried kale and fresh chilli are added for texture and a kick.”

Seafood lovers can’t miss the garlic prawns with sumac and coriander, which is highly recommended by the chef. “I like the simplicity of the gentle cooking of the prawns in the oil and a paste of garlic confit. We finish with sumac (a traditional Middle Eastern spice) and coriander to add brightness and a contrast of citrusy tartness and freshness. “ Considerate of local clients’ preferences, the chef strikes a balance of the spices as well as spice heat and sourness. “The menu at Bedu is rather my own take on the flavours of the Middle East, it’s the way I like to eat — fresh and light — and I wanted to share that with people. Maybe I’ll mix together a Turkish-style garnish with a Lebanese spice mix. I’ll borrow whatever works best for a certain dish and adjust it to suit my style.”

In order to help local diners to discover more Middle Eastern cuisine, Bedu hosts a monthly dinner series with Corey to explore other cuisines that are linked in history or complement Middle Eastern flavours. It’s also

MGM Equips Local Elderly and SMEs for the Typhoon Season

MGM has started a new community care program in July, distributing over 400 emergency kits to SMEs in low-lying areas as well as elderly from União Geral das Associações dos Moradores de Macau (UGAMM), the Women’s General Association of Macau and Caritas Macau, to prepare them for possible adverse situations.

Since disastrous Typhoon Hato, MGM has initiated a number of programs to support the community in their recovery journey, such as the launch of cloud data backup service, installation of flood protection facility and donations to community services.

Jiang Xuchun, Director of Seac Pai Van Family Support and Community Service Complex of UGAMM said, “The emergency kits are very considerate for including a comprehensive range of supplies to prepare elderly for the upcoming typhoons and to raise their awareness of disaster prevention. It is especially important to equip the elderly who live alone and to educate them the correct way to get prepared.”

GEG Celebrates 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of Macau SAR In support of the Macau SAR Government’s talent development policies, Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) has been running a range of training programs to cultivate local talent to sustain social development. Today, in the Grand Ballroom of Ritz-Carlton, Macau, GEG held the “Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Macau SAR Government – Director Dialogue with GEG YAP”, in conjunction with the Macau Management Association (MMA).
