Athens is the venerable cradle of civilisation in Europe – the former city state that gave us the dream of democracy (a Greek word), but visit it today and you will find it to be a lively, spicy Mediterranean city with a touch of the Middle East. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ

thens may be somewhat overlooked at times, tucked as it is into the south-eastern corner of Europe, but it is a great metropolis and a city of many firsts. The mother of European democracy was once a powerful city state that brought forth many legendary intellectuals and artists such as Plato and Socrates. As the southernmost capital in Europe it is also the hottest on the continent, as you will notice if you visit in

summer. One of the oldest cities in the world, Athens is an original, ancient metropolis (another Greek word), and while in classical times its population swelled to well over half a million, now that number is almost seven times as high, putting the Greek capital right up there with Madrid and Rome in terms of size. A place that big naturally sprawls over several distinct districts, and Athens is certainly a city with local flavour. ›

CLASSIC SIGHTS But before you delve into lively flea markets off little squares or hit the cafés and nightlife spots of Athinai’s suburban areas, the classic thing to do is to admire its stunning monuments straight out of the glory of Ancient Greece. You see, we stand in awe of Rome and its might, but much of Rome was but a more militaristic copy of Greece. Indeed, the Romans copied Greek architecture, culture, art, theatre, uniforms, even their religion and pantheon

– right down to emulating some elements of their democracy. In this way, Poseidon became Neptune, Zeus became Jupiter, and Rome’s famous palaces and public buildings were modelled on original versions that still stand proudly in Athens. The most obviously eye-catching of these is of course the Acropolis, the three-hectare large citadel complex that overlooks this sea of buildings from its limestone outcrop 150 metres above sea level. In its earliest form, the Acropolis dates back almost

3,000 years! Easily the most iconic part of this wonder of the classical world is the Parthenon, an ancient temple that defines the very concept of early classical and later Neoclassical architecture based upon the well-known Greek column varieties. When it comes to the chance of strolling amid the giants of the distant past, only Rome itself equals Athens within Europe, but there are other historic sights to behold as well, including a whole collection of Neoclassical palaces and museums inspired by Greek independence in the 19th century. › The shoreline near Piraeus

Beautiful Astir beach – a lesser-known jewel of Athens

Classical Greece became part of the Roman Empire, then the seat of the Eastern Roman Empire, with its capital not in Athens but in Constantinople (today’s Istanbul), before the latter was renamed Byzantium during the postRoman Byzantine period. It all (including Athens) fell to the invading Turks in the Middle Ages, and so once-proud Greece lost its independence for several centuries before regaining it with French help in the 1830s.

MORE THAN HISTORY But there is more than history alone to Athens. Veer away from the tourist-filled sights and find your way down to the main squares and shopping streets, such as Ermou, and Syntagma Square. Now you’re in the heart of the city, surrounded by the unmistakable bustle of Athens, as well as famous monuments such as the National Gardens, the old parliament and royal palace, as well as numerous

museums and luxurious hotels. Don’t miss the iconic Evzones soldiers guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, they’re pretty unique. Let the lively bustle flow over you like a wave and you will feel a sense of familiarity with a Spanish city, although the scent of Greek cooking, coffee and spices wafting over from the plentiful restaurants and cafés has a slightly more exotic feel to it. ›

Make your way to Monastiraki, an atmospheric district full of shops and flea markets where you’ll also have a chance to sample traditional dishes such as lamb Kleftiko, Moussaka and shawarma-like Gyros, washed down with local wines and complemented with Baklava and strong Greek coffee. In the evenings, take a cab to Psiri, an elegant part of town that’s known for a lively dining, café society and live music taverna scene. In fact, you’d do well to book a hotel here, and stroll through the cobbled streets of Páka and Anafiotika in search of charm and a hearty lunch. Athens is also a coastal city, so take a train to one of the many beachside areas, such as Palaio Faliro and Alimos, of course not missing out on the lively pleasures of Piraeus, the harbour city of Athens. ›

History is all around, from the ancient temples and columns that adorn this capital and its pine-clad hillsides right up to near the beaches. The hills also provide spectacular views over Athens and the Saronic Gulf to which it extends. From here, it’s but a short daytrip to Delphi in the nearby mountains. You won’t be advised to hike to the top in a quest for the cryptic answers provided by the legendary Oracle, but taking in the beauty and antiquity of this spot is more than enough excitement for most visitors. ›

For jet-setters, there are also cruises and catamaran trips along the shore to the surrounding bays, islands and myriad of coves and beaches. If you round the peninsular form of Attica you could sail to Thermopylae, where a Greek alliance defeated a massive Persian invasion against all odds. You know, as in 300 – as seen on movie screens. As beacons light up all over the UK and Commonwealth this month to mark Queen Elizabeth ll’s Platinum Jubilee, looks back on her record-breaking 70-year reign. She was on an idyllic safari with Prince Philip at Treetops in Kenya when the news came: King George Vl is dead. Long live the Queen! From the day her father died, February 6, 1952, the Queen who was never meant to be threw herself into a life of service and self-sacrifice in ways that have won the respect of pretty much everyone the world over, anti-monarchists included.

H

eir to The Firm by virtue of her uncle King Edward Vlll abdicating to marry divorcee Wallis Simpson, she was a 25-yearold mother of two when she took over the helm, keeping the monarchy afloat through seven choppy decades while some of her family seemed intent on sinking it. And although it might have foundered on the rocks of her initial apparent indifference to the death of People’s Princess Diana, she navigated serenely around them with the stoicism of her namesake, Queen Elizabeth l when facing the Spanish Armada. Queens these days have a lot less power, as Elizabeth II noted in the first televised Queen’s Speech (Christmas 1957): “I cannot lead you

into battle, I do not give you laws or administer justice but I can give you my heart and my devotion.” They could

sack a prime minister – Boris beware – but only in exceptional circumstances. Constitutional monarchs are expected to work with their

governments, not against them. More bluntly, as the antimonarchist Daily Mirror wrote, she is ‘The first British monarch ever to pretty much do what she’s told. the scenes, she does keep politicians on their toes. I don’t think people will realise until she’s gone how much she is part of the national landscape. She is such a reassuring figure… there’s the sense that the wheels aren’t going to fall off as long as there’s a flag flying above Buckingham Palace.” Not everyone loves the institution but the Queen is rated top royal with a 75% popularity ranking on YouGov, while heir to the throne Charles languishes in sixth place with 50%. Elizabeth commands a respect not yet earned by the rest of the royal family, say royal watchers, which will create unpredictability for her successor. ›


JUBILEE FEVER Brits all over the UK will be handing up union jack bunting and painting their towns red, white and blue for the four-day Platinum Jubilee weekend (June 2-5). CROWNING MOMENT BBC coverage of the 1953 Coronation was a turning point for TV when viewers outnumbered radio listeners for the first time. But they all belong to the Commonwealth of Nations which has grown from eight countries to 54 under Elizabeth’s headship, connected through shared history and values and celebrated at the Commonwealth Games. The Queen has visited 52 Commonwealth countries at least once, clocking 44,000 miles on her first six-month mega tour. HER GROUNDHOG DAY From 7.30am when she takes her first pot of Twining’s Earl Grey tea in bed, listening to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, the head of The Firm’s working fiveday week is mapped out to the minute. After the royal bath, filled to seven inches precisely, and the assistance of three dressers with the first of up to five daily changes of outfit, she eats a light continental breakfast and is at her desk by 9.30 for two hours of paperwork: daily, a mailbag of 300 letters, a digest of the news and Red Boxes of Cabinet documents to review

There are also 10 minute Audiences with visiting dignitaries to get through before lunch, alone or with family – but they can’t just pop in without a formal invitation from the Queen’s Page. Afternoons are for public engagements but everything stops for tea back at the Palace at five, then more paperwork until 7.30pm, unless it’s Wednesday when she meets the PM. No minutes are taken and what is said in the Audience Room stays in the Audience Room. In her younger days Elizabeth would often have to don a tiara for an official dinner. More often

these days, she has a gin and Dubonnet cocktail and dines privately – usually on game or fish and fresh veg from her royal estates – no starch. She is disciplinarian about her diet. By 11pm she’s in bed reading a Dick Francis detective novel. It’s been pretty much the same routine for 70 years, except that the Queen has swapped her office at Buckingham Palace for Windsor Castle. WHO ARE THESE MILLENNIALS AND ZOOMERS? HOW DOES THEIR BUYING BEHAVIOUR IMPACT ON LUXURY BRANDS? First, we must make a difference between Millennials and Gen Z, both often confused. Millennials, or Generation Y, were born between 1981 and 1996 and represent young people aged 26 to 41. Zoomers, or Generation Z, on the other hand, were born after 1996. Gen Z is the first generation to grow up on digital platforms. They get their fashion, travel and luxury inspirations from their favorite influencers or micro-influencers on Instagram, TikTok and Youtube. These inspirations are also found in the varieties of places they discover, physically or digitally.

And they influence Millennials, whose concerns about climate change and sustainability have deepened. These young consumers are increasingly turning to the high-end and very high-end, bringing new expectations to luxury brands, especially in terms of new technologies and sustainability. According to payment services company Klarna, Members of Generation Z and Millennials purchased more luxury items than their older, Generation X in the past 12 months.

A SHIFT TO DIGITAL Luxury brands have already recognised the importance of investing in digital and communicating through

this channel. Even if there is a real pleasure in entering a luxury store and having an extraordinary shopping experience, luxury is nowadays largely bought on the internet. With the pandemic and the numerous online purchases, luxury brands have had to accelerate their transition to digital. With an ever-younger clientele, luxury brands must not neglect their presence on social networks either. 83% of Generation Z consumers and nearly two-thirds of Millennials say they follow luxury brands on social networks. And almost as many say they have bought something after discovering a product on a social network, led by TikTok. ›

The new demands of Millennials and Gen Z are pushing luxury brands to look even further for new concepts, new ideas and new interpretations of luxury. This is where collaborations and co-branding take a big part in the new trends, striving for design innovation as well as unique collections that purchasers will snap up.

These collaborations, often presented in limited editions, create such a high demand from consumers that a kind of hysteria is created around these different pieces. Handbags, sneakers and luxury watches have become iconic objects that sometimes result in waiting lists of several years to finally become the happy owner. For examples, the famous Louis Vuitton and Supreme sneakers or the iconic Birkin by

Hermès come to mind. “There used to be a waiting list, but now you have to be rich or important,” notes Business Insider regarding the Birkin. When Millennials and Gen Z go luxury shopping, they’re not looking to buy an It Bag with a logo found at the local mall. They want something unique, soughtafter, with clearly stated values. A promise that luxury brands must be able to deliver.

Generation Z is also the one with strong opinions on sustainability and ‘repair and rewear’. Luxury brands must therefore naturally orient themselves towards this new trend displayed by young consumers. A considerable number of its customers are indeed looking for animalfree, quality and sustainable products. Between quality, artisanal techniques, local circulation and the investments made by customers, isn’t luxury finally more sustainable than the so-called ‘classic’ brands? About 59% of luxury buyers say that their luxury purchases are more sustainable. These new generations of demanding and seasoned consumers have clearly changed the luxury industry and what it has to offer. PURE BRED HORSES

IBERIAN STYLE You may not be aware of the fact, but the Iberian Peninsula is home to one of the finest horse breeds and equestrian traditions in the world, and the Spanish version of it belongs to Andalucía. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ

A

ncestors of what has become the modern Iberian horse are known to have been present on the peninsula for over 20,000 years, roaming its plains before helping mankind conquer nature in these parts and farm the land. The development of settlements, towns and indeed civilisations is intricately related to the horse, which plays a prominent role in humankind’s evolution. Without horse power, much of it would have slowed down considerably, so we have a lot to thank our equine friends for, and among those that have served us so well there are few breeds as noble as that indigenous to this peninsula.

Famous already in Phoenician and Roman times, the Iberian horse was renowned for its speed, strength and grace, features that made it an empire builder here and abroad. Foreign powers took the breed back with them, and the invading Muslims added the bloodline of their own beautiful Arabian horses to it, creating a distinctive type that has been recognised as a breed in its own right since the 15th century. Not much later the Spanish conquistadores took this walking war machine, which gave them such an advantage in battle, to the far reaches of their emerging empire, and so began the long process by which the Iberian horse has spread across

the world. But make no mistake, for the Iberian horse, now known as the Pura Raza Española (the Pure Spanish Horse), is of this peninsula and remains connected to its land. The conformation characteristics established centuries ago, such as powerful neck and hindquarters, a thick mane and tail, and an elegant gait, remain the reference points when judging the purity and quality of today’s Iberians, whose close, almost identical, relative is the Lusitano from Portugal. Together, they helped in the creation of empires, but were also used to draw carriages, herd cattle, in bullfighting,

dressage and of course war, where they gave their rider an edge. Where the Puro Sangue Lusitano (Pure Blood Lusitano) is mostly grey or chestnut-coloured, the Spanish version tends more generally towards solid grey coats, but these prized animals which once formed the bartering tool of kings and emperors are otherwise almost identical and the pride of their respective countries. By the beginning of the 20th century, centuries of warfare and exportation, not to mention uncontrolled cross-breeding, had caused the noble bloodline to become diffused, and so a more stringent level of control was imposed through the establishment of the Spanish and Portuguese stud books. › A Lusitano undergoing training

THE PRIDE OF ANDALUCÍA If the Pure Spanish Horse is the pride of Spain, it is certainly the pride of Andalucía, for so close is the linkage to this part of the country that it is also known as the Andalusian Horse, and yes, as the birthplace of bullfighting and many of Spain’s country traditions, this is the region whose equestrian heritage defines that of the country as a whole. Not surprisingly, many of the finest Spanish

purebloods can be found on the grand estates of Andalucía, where much of the breeding of the stock takes place in what the locals call a yagüe, or stud farm. While these can be found across the length and breadth of the region, the area between Seville and Jerez de la Frontera is the epicentre. Jerez, in particular, is the equestrian heart of Andalucía, a region where the traditions of wine, horses and carriage driving come

together within the romantic setting of wine estates. There is even a museum in Jerez dedicated to two of its most beloved icons: sherry and the Andalusian horse, which also forms the focal point of the Feria del Caballo, one of the annual high points on the social calendar in the city and its surroundings. Jerez has dedicated its feria to the noble creature that has meant so much in its history, and it is an affair to behold. ›

Audi has been developing its range of e-tron dedicated electric vehicles for many years but it was 2019 before we saw a production model. Since then, the e-tron lineup has expanded rapidly and there are now more than half a dozen distinctive models ranging from small saloons and hatchbacks to the very desirable e-tron GT, flagship of the electric fleet. he GT, which is also available as an RS highperformance variant, might just be the most handsome full electric mid sized saloon on the market right now. It’s hard to fault its sleek four-door coupé styling and outstanding detailing

around the bodywork. The e-tron GT shares its platform and most of its electric drivetrain architecture with the Porsche Taycan, so there are some seriously performanceoriented genes in this Audi. Technically, the e-tron GT is intriguing because it combines very impressive power with some notably worthwhile safety features. Every e-tron model has all-wheel drive thanks to a pair of electric motors, one at each end. Audi claims a zero to 100 km/h figure of 3.3-seconds for the car, but several media testers have nailed this in less than three seconds. ›

The powertrain used for the e-tron GT range is conventional as far as EVs go, but highly effective. The entry level Quattro has a peak electrical output of 390 kW and 469-horsepower in boost mode and will get you silently to 100 km/h in 4.1-seconds. Top speed is given as 245 km/h. For buyers looking for even more performance from their e-tron GT, the RS version awaits. The dual electric motors on that model produce 440 kW and 646-horsepower in boost and resulting performance figures reflect the power hike – 3.3-seconds to 100 km/h and a top speed of 266 km/h. The RS also boasts four-wheel steering and a two-speed transmission. Most EVs have a direct

drive single speed gearbox. Batteries may not be the most exciting aspect of any car, but on EVs, they are among the most critical components. The RS e-tron GT uses an 84 kWh lithium ion unit that can offer a range of up to 565-km in mild weather around town, which is impressive even when compared to cutting edge market leaders. They can be charged very quickly from a fast charger – about 23-minutes to 80 per cent of full charge. Using a normal power supply, fully charging an RS e-tron GT is an overnight job. A car like the RS e-tron GT deserves an interior to match its technology levels and Audi delivers. Thankfully

though, the stylists stayed close to Audi tradition, which most fans of the marque will approve of. Audi has always created great interiors with tidy, straightforward instrumentation and an elegant design ethic. Audi emphasises its choice of interior trim materials and the eco-friendly approach designers took. When it comes to cabin ambiance, Audi is tough to beat. Owners who prefer some kind of audio experience rather than near silence when driving their e-tron will like Audi’s available e-sound, which, according to the manufacturer, “immerses the e-tron GT in a contemporary acoustic expression that will define future generations of vehicles.”

BMW has something similar in its new i7 luxury saloon but critics have accurately described some of the sounds as similar to a WW2 British air raid siren. This kind of sonic ambiance is bound to arouse strong ‘love it or hate it’ sentiment among buyers. To many, she is a shining example of the importance of mental resilience when it comes to staying young and vibrant. IN HER SHOES Production has been hushhush about Halftime. It will undoubtedly be one of the most viewed Netflix shows of the year, for audiences have always been curious about the person that lies behind the performance powerhouse we have become so accustomed to. Little is known about J-Lo because she has always been successful at keeping her emotions close to her chest. In interviews with even the most skillful of journalists, she has been professional and friendly, but her answers have always been work-oriented, and she has hardly ever said more than a few

words about her relationships or her children. Halftime will be giving us a little more insight into her personal challenges and victories, which is befitting considering the fact that her recent film, Marry Me, reveals the loneliness that often lies

behind fame and fortune. It’s easy to forget the insecurity that may have led us to make mistakes we wouldn’t repeat in our maturity. Equally risible is the myth that by the time we are 40, we are expected to have it all worked out. There are still so many lessons to learn, flaws to work on, strengths to leverage. J-Lo says it herself, explaining that it wasn’t until she turned 50 that she started to feel like everything was in its right place. In an interview with The New York Times, she said that 2019 was the year in which “everything I had worked for in movies, music, and fashion just started happening.”

mum, though whether she will dedicate her professional life to music remains to be seen. As J-Lo told Extra TV, when she asks Emme to join her onstage, “it’s not about putting her out in the spotlight, it’s about doing things together that bond us. I don’t

They’re longeared, velvety, and affectionate, and they have been the subject of everything from legendary poems to animations. Donkeys are some of the cutest creatures on the planet, and it is devastating to think that so many of them are abandoned and mistreated. Thankfully, across Spain, there are caring groups who have set up sanctuaries where donkeys can thrive, socialise, and receive the care they need. One of these havens is El Refugio del Burrito, which comprises two centres – one in Badajoz and the other in Fuente de Piedra, Málaga. The refuge’s work is crucial and, at times, a matter of urgency. There are days in which dozens of donkeys are abandoned and by the time the sanctuary is notified, many may need intensive care. This is where you can help – by making donations and spreading the word about this special place.


UK TIES

El Refugio del Burrito is a subsidiary of The Donkey Sanctuary – a UK charity that has been working to protect mules and donkeys for over five decades. The ultimate goal of this organisation is to create a world where donkeys and mules live free from suffering; one in which their contribution to humankind is fully valued. The refuge also investigates cases of abuse or neglect, and attends to public complaints concerning donkeys and mules. It is actively involved in causes that encourage the application and improvement of existing laws regarding animal welfare and the promotion of awareness campaigns and education about responsible equine ownership and expert care.

BUILDING GREATER AWARENESS

The refuge educates owners, veterinarians, farriers and other professionals and associations on donkey and mule care, sharing The Professional Handbook of the Donkey. This and other publications provide a wealth of information on an array of topics – including nutrition, oral health, wound management, foot care, common infections, and nursing care.

WHAT A DONKEY NEEDS

The team at El Refugio del Burrito provides information on how to boost donkeys’ physical and mental health. It is important to earn the trust of these loyal animals, provide them with a wide range of activities that mentally stimulate them, and make sure they have enough exercise. It is also relevant to remember that in their natural environment, donkeys can spend up to 16 hours a day roaming over varied landscapes in search of food and watering holes. If you are caring for domesticated donkeys, give them enough space to roam, and provide them with different zones in which to graze.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

The most meaningful way you can help is via donations. Did you know that with just €3, you can buy a donkey the medicine it needs for seven days, or that €5 covers the cost of feeding one donkey with hay for seven days? You can make donations via Visa and Mastercard, Paypal, EURO cheque, or set up a standing order with your bank so that a monthly amount gets sent to the refuge. If you want to make a regular commitment, consider adopting a donkey for just €5 a month.

If you wish to take a donkey home as a pet, you will need to have the right set-up. For instance, donkeys require a minimum of 250m2 of land to graze. A Donkey Welfare Advisor will discuss this and other matters with you so that the move is seamless. You can invest time in one or more donkeys by becoming an ‘exclusive adopter and protector’ of one or more donkeys, visiting them often and taking an active interest in them. You can also leave part of your legacy to the refuge, or simply make donations in kind. The refuge always needs items like blankets, rakes and shovels, brushes, combs, and leggings for children (size eight to 10). The next time a loved one has a birthday or special occasion, consider giving them items from the refuge’s gift shop, so you can kill two birds with one stone. Do not hesitate to report any instances of donkey cruelty if you witness it. The website has a checklist you can complete online or post to the refuge, and you can also call the team directly. Call me a hopeless romantic, but I always find it a little sad when groundbreaking makeup companies are bought off by conglomerates. Currently, Estée Lauder owns a number of beauty and skincare companies – including La Mer, Origins, M.A.C., Clinique, and Bobbi Brown. In 2016, it also acquired Too Faced – the playful, artistic company founded in 1998 by cosmetics-obsessed couple, Jerrod Blandino and Jeremy Johnson. If you were a fan of the company before the big takeover, then you probably noticed that the changeover was seamless. Too Faced has continued to present its products in arty packaging, and to release cutting-edge collections that break new ground in terms of scent, look, texture, and long-lasting goodness. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS DREAMING BIG It is, perhaps, dramatically fitting that Jerrod and Jeremy’s company should have become part of the prestigious Estée Lauder group. Before founding Too Faced, they worked behind an Estée Lauder counter. It was during this time that they liaised with customers and discovered the transformative power of makeup. For Jerrod and Jeremy, the goal was to build “a serious makeup brand that knows how to have fun.” With “little more than a credit card and a dream,” they brought something new to the industry – a fun, cruelty-free, brand with tongue-in-cheek product names and lively packaging, backed by topquality, highly-pigmented lip tints, eyeshadows, blushes, and more. In 2015, Jerrod and Jeremy sold a majority stake in the company to a private equity firm, General Atlantic. This deal quickly tripled the value of the company and in 2016, Estée Lauder purchased the brand for a cool $1.45 billion. The couple

recently announced that effective June 30, 2022, they will be leaving the brand and company to pursue new entrepreneurial opportunities.

THE LIP INJECTION REVOLUTION Every brand has its star product – one that celebrities and models rave about, causing it to skyrocket. In Too Faced’s case, that item was Lip Injection – a ‘plumping revolution’ that enabled wearers to sport a fuller pout instantly.

UNIQUE PACKAGING In 2006, Too Faced began packaging their eyeshadow products in paper packaging bearing gorgeous vintage illustrations that harked back to the pin-up era. There was a wide array of illustrations for different products, and today, these original palettes are considered collectibles.

PAMPERING THE SENSES Soon after, the company launched Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer, which

is made with real cocoa powder. If you love yummy-smelling products, then you will feel like a kid in a candy shop when you visit Too Faced’s stand at Sephora. The Sweet Peach palette is just one of many scented products whose fresh, fruity aroma is to-die-for!

SEXY NAMES In the early 2010s, the brand released some of its coolest-sounding and most successful products, including Better Than Sex Mascara (an ultralengthening and voluminising mascara) and the Born This Way foundation, a natural-looking base that offers great coverage. Depression is one of the most common mental conditions in the world, affecting approximately 630,000 men and 1.5M women in Spain alone. The arrival of the pandemic has made matters worse, with the World Health Organisation reporting a 25 per cent rise in both depression and anxiety across the globe. SHA Wellness Clinic in Alicante, which specialises in integrative health and wellbeing, recently informed the press of two cutting-edge technological treatments that are the buzzword in the treatment of depression. Developed by NASA and the Harvard Medical School, the treatments (Brain Photobiomodulation and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation) have shown great promise. BRAIN PHOTOBIOMODULATION Photobiomodulation (PBM therapy), also known as lowlevel laser therapy, involves applying red and near infrared light to neural tissue to boost the oxygenation of brain cells, improve cell metabolism, and reduce inflammation. The aim is to improve general functioning and boost energy levels and mental wellbeing. PBM activates neuronal mitochondria, whose job is to generate cellular energy and improve cognitive abilities. The treatment is currently being employed to treat numerous neurological, neurodegenerative, and psychological issues, including depression, anxiety, traumatic lesions, and cerebrovascular accidents.

TRANSCRANIAL ELECTRICAL STIMULATION Harvard University students are also working on Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that has yielded satisfying results in treating major depressive disorder. Patients wear a wireless helmet equipped with 39 electrodes that record, evaluate, and modulate electrical activity in the brain in real time and emit very lowintensity electrical discharges.

Bruno Ribeiro, head of the SHA Wellness Cognitive and Emotional Health Unit, explains that “the functioning of neurons is related to neurotransmitters and bioelectrical impulses. We know, for instance, that depression causes an imbalance of impulses in both hemispheres of the brain. In patients with depression, the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex displays abnormally low activity. By applying currents with a precise frequency to specific brain areas, we can modulate this organ’s activity and restore balance.” tDCS improves cortical plasticity. It can be used to improve cognitive performance and treat sleep problems, addictions, epilepsy, apoplexy, neurodegenerative diseases, and depression. It has a high potential to improve recovery from strokes and neurological trauma.

TOP QUALITY RADIO IN MARBELLA Marbella-based radio station CHILLI FM has been broadcasting for the past few years, becoming more popular within the community every day. Today we are talking with Kane, who is here to tell us all about Chilli FM. Tell us Kane, how was Chilli FM born? Chilli FM was born out of the need for a more local and unique radio station that would reflect the audience and the local community. A radio station has the ability to hold up a mirror to the audience and reflect that vibe, that sense of place, that local attitude. Despite lockdowns and business unrest, the Chilli FM radio station began to broadcast in 2020. The network first started out as a radio station serving the immediate Marbella area from its studios near Puerto

Banús and today, we broadcast over 150 miles along all Spain’s Costa del Sol on multiple connected FM transmitters. Chilli now also streams online internationally across various smart devices. We have apps for smartphone, smart TV and smart speakers, so have the potential of reaching millions of people. Describe your station. Who are your listeners? What kind of music does your station play? Chilli FM is the newest and most exciting FM station on the Costa del Sol, airing a hot adult contemporary music

We generally target individuals over 30 and play music from today’s current contemporary artists such as Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran, mixed with the top tracks and classic hits from the 70s, the 80s and the 90s, therefore appealing to both women and men from 25 to 65.

Do you have more male or female listeners? The majority of the Chilli FM audience are female at about 65%. Women are the movers and shakers in our society and especially in our economy. Did you know that 80% of all retail purchases are made expressly by women, or highly influenced by women. Are there any interesting radio shows happening now or on the horizon, and what are they about? Yes, ‘Chilli Shoutouts’. Importantly, Chilli FM is all about the music, the community, what’s on, what’s happening, and where to go. ‘Live’ presenters for various shows begin later this year, but right now we have just launched a radio show called Chilli Shoutouts on Saturday mornings.

Chilli Shoutouts is a dedicated WhatsApp number where listeners can send in a voice message about anything. They can dedicate a song, tell a silly story or anecdote, say happy birthday to someone, virtually anything, and we’ll play their message on the show, followed by the song they wanted. For the first time, radio listeners can create their own show. It's really easy. All you have to do is add the number 717 121 212 to the contacts on your phone, and then WhatsApp us a voice file. Because it was first time an English-speaking show on the Coast offered this type of global audience interaction, the results were astounding. We received an explosion of messages from Chilli listeners from Spain and all over Europe. They were itching to get on the radio!

BIOPARC FUENGIROLA’S IMPRESSIVE CONSERVATION WORK Bioparc Fuengirola recently celebrated the birth of two turtles from the endangered species, Palustre asiática. They are the descendants of turtles that arrived at the park in 2001 following a large-scale confiscation of thousands of these animals in Hong Kong. The turtles were being illegally transported to China for food in deplorable conditions. A PLACE TO RELISH The iconic restaurant is located at Plaza Altomirano close to the main Church Square. Passing through the arch with the menu displayed alongside, you traverse a front terrace very popular with diners in summer, before entering the main restaurant. Here cosy tables enjoy a birds eye view of the kitchen, always a hive of activity. To the rear of the restaurant is located their covered garden terrace with a glass roof, sections of which

can be opened to the stars. It’s a pretty place, with sofa seating on the edges and linen covered tables with wrought-iron chairs, large wicker basket lamps overhead, and plenty of foliage comprising ferns, verdant plants and palms. Lingering in this relaxing

oasis is pleasant indeed, with a convivial ambience engendered by nice music and the ebb and flow of other diners chatting at surrounding tables. The waiting staff are super friendly making you feel you are part of the family, at once adding to the enjoyment of the occasion. ›

A CHEF WHO DELIVERS The kitchen is headed up by maestro, Maxime Lenoir, who joined the current set-up seven years ago and has hardly missed a day since. So adept at working with his dedicated kitchen staff has he become that they can even cater events for 40 people ordering freely from the menu. Key values in this kitchen include fresh produce, teamwork and a consistency which has garnered the premises a loyal following. The menu is fairly compact but sufficiently diverse to cater to even the most fervent of regular diners. We prepared to get in the

Our main courses dully arrived and, as with the entrées, were very enticing in their presentation. A big mention must go to a special on the evening, the Cod Fillet, covered by slices of pickled ginger, with Oyster Sauce and seasonal Vegetables. The fish was perfectly cooked, with the the flakes just sliding on the fork, delivering a fusion of contrasting flavours. We also made short work of a velvety Beef Tartar, lusciously melting in the mouth, coming with a smooth salad and crunchy gherkins, and the Black-Jack Tenderloin Steak, served in a creamy black pepper and Jack Daniel’s Sauce, accompanied of course with pukka Pommes Frites. We finished this wonderful

meal with a fresh Strawberry Pavlova, Maravilla – a meringue base covered in whipped cream with dark chocolate shavings, and a delicious Caramel Ice Cream Cocktail with Caramelised Popcorn. FOOD PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2022 An apple a day keeps the doctor away, yet it also attracts some of world’s most talented photographers, as was evident at the recent Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year 2022 Awards. The event, one of the most highly anticipated on the international photography scene, seeks to highlight the growing importance of gastronomic photography as an artistic discipline. 1 This year’s top prize went to a powerful image entitled Kebabiyana, by Indian photographer, Debdatta Chakraborty. Taken in an ordinary street in Srinagar that transforms into a culinary hub by night, it features traditional Wazwan kebabs emerging from a pit of smoke and spice.

Bodegas José Pariente in Valladolid recently celebrated its 25th Anniversary

It used to be said that Spain did not produce good white wines; only the reds were worth bothering with. Those were the days of heavily oaked white riojas, the much fresher Penedès varieties not for all palates - and the limited quantities of more agreeable assortments from northwest Spain that never seemed to be available outside the region. DIGNIFYING A WINE REGION

y the end of the last century there were several new, emergent, or reinvented bodegas turning out wines that would have been unrecognisable to the older generation. However, Spain has always had its innovators. Miguel Torres SA, today the nation’s largest familyowned bodega, started using stainless steel tanks in the 1980s, and Enrique Fournier changed

the way the traditional Rioja bodegas practiced winemaking. The late Carlos Falcó, Marqués de Griñón, launched innovative projects in many wine-growing regions, and while Rioja is still possibly the most conservative wine area of them all, even here some bold ‘revolutionaries’ are creating wines as they think they should always have been made. Paco Hurtado, of Riscal, decided

some time ago that most barrelaged Riojas had too much oak, so now, after initial maturation, puts the wine into old casks where the wood effect is not so noticeable. He defiantly uses 40% of Cabernet Sauvignon in his Barón de Chirel, on the basis that his family was using the grape 60 years before there even was a Consejo Regulador to tell producers that they shouldn’t.


But while it is easy to criticise the regulatory councils, they have demonstrated that in the long term their oversight of a region is usually positive. A case in point is Rueda, always a zone known for high production and low prices, without any nationally accepted brands. Cheap and cheerful, fruity, and light. The usual order was and still is ‘Serve me a Ruedito please’, much the same as asking for ‘a Rioja’, a ‘Ribera del Duero’ or a ‘Jerez’. Huge volumes of wine are sold but it is frustrating for the wineries trying to impose a policy of quality over quantity. So how do you change the image of an entire wine region? It has been shown in Galicia, for example, that the first move is to convince drinkers that not all wines should be drunk young. Older wines have a different taste and are more costly, but the difference is like that of chalk and cheese. The campaign to improve the image encapsulated in the phrase ‘Dignify Rueda’, and the establishment of a ’Gran Vino’ category with quality as the priority, has done the rest. To qualify, the vines for the Gran Vino classification must be 30 years old and the production per vine lower than for the regular wine. Well-equipped both mentally and physically for the job of

dignifying Rueda, it was a new generation of young vintners who arrived on the scene in timely fashion. This had the desired effect of putting a previously unexciting area on the map. Today the wines from the foremost Rueda bodegas are appreciated throughout Spain and internationally: Álvarez y Díez, Antaño, Lorenzo Cachazo, Belondrade y Lurton, Felix Sanz, Marqués de Irún, Sanz, Yllera, and José Pariente. This last-mentioned winery, established in 1997, is a fine example of how the region has developed over the last ten years. Martina and Ignacio are third generation winemakers who have studied in other regions and whose priorities since 2009 have revolved around innovation and sustainability. Martina learned winemaking and agronomy, and brother Ignacio, law and business studies to obtain an international MBA. Since 2013 Martina has taken care of the wine-making element, and Ignacio has been responsible for exports and the director generalship of the Group. Apart from their work in the family bodega, both have embarked on a mission to recover old vines in the Duero Valley and Sierra de Gredos under the umbrella of Bodegas Prieto Pariente. e
