Cont. from p1 usual parking arrangements on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays with the boom gates in operation. This will allow customers and businesses an alternative to parking on Memorial Dr, with a short walk through the market terraces to main street businesses. Car park access is from Napier Rd.
Experience Eumundi chairperson Louise Formosa said, “It is very exciting that we have been able to negotiate this outcome for customers and business owners and we are hopeful that it will align with the commencement of the streetscaping works.”
The council construction team has located its vehicle depot beside the Goodstart Early Learning centre with access via Napier Rd.
Construction of the Bank Arcade zone starting in August will continue until October 2024. It will deliver a new raised pedestrian crossing on Memorial Dr, upgraded footpath, lighting, landscaping and seating areas amongst other improvements.
Works will then switch to the Etheridge St zone from October, to construct a similar raised pedestrian crossing with outdoor seating, leafy shaded areas, upgraded footpaths, lighting, way-finding signage, and a bullock-turning circle heritage interpretation.
There will be a construction break over the peak December to January trading period. Works are expected to be completed by February 2025, weather dependent.
SCC Div 10 Cr David Law said, “The upgrades along Memorial Dr will help the street operate safely and efficiently and enhance the look and experience of the bustling town while improving accessibility for everyone.”
SCC has budgeted $3.3M in this year’s budget to deliver the project, in partnership with the Qld Government which is contributing $500,000 through the SE Qld Community Stimulus Program.
Stage 2 works are subject to further technical investigations and with a start date anticipated in early 2025. Council will keep our community informed as this stage is finalised.

This original performance explores the lives of three very different women – all named Pamela – each searching for love, meaning, and security across seven life stages from childhood to their final breath. Growing up in a period of social and technological change, they ride the ups and downs of life with tenacity.
The play is performed by 17 women, aged 45-74 who have worked with professional theatre maker Dr Sharon Hogan from Gympie’s Perseverance Street Theatre Company. They are part of the Mature Women Actors Collective, an initiative launched in May this year. This is their debut performance. Tickets are $15 through t.ly/LZgyL.

Experience Eumundi strategy launch
A community meeting hosted on 30 July by Experience Eumundi communicated the organisation’s new strategy, developed during the past 6 months. Experience Eumundi is a notfor-profit organisation and manages the market car parking in Eumundi.
Experience Eumundi chairperson Louise Formosa shared the strategy with 20 attendees who represented 12 local community groups or organisations.
The highlights of the proposed strategy included:
• A new bi-annual community sponsorship program with $100,000 available in the 24/25 financial year.
• The formation of creative partnerships to promote Eumundi, making efficient use of available talent and resources.
• Hosting quarterly meetings with other local organisations to find out who’s doing what and how they can collaborate to assist others.
• Ensuring the community is kept informed by publishing achievements and goals regularly.
• Up-skilling the Experience Eumundi team and volunteers to ensure sustainability and compliance within the organisation.
• Streamlining the organisation's offerings by closing the RV stopover and supporting the

Eumundi Showgrounds RV facilities, to allow more cars to be parked efficiently.
• Exploring new infrastructure projects to enhance our local community spaces, such as an off-leash dog park, an undercover area for large events and power provided to the market terraces.
Other plans include the investigation into automation of the boom-gates at the entrances to the car parks to reduce street congestion and improve the visitor experience. Volunteers would still be required to direct vehicles within the car park.
Two car parks also require extensive upgrades. The Albert St car park is currently below flood level due to erosion. However future proposed earthworks on an adjacent planned subdivision for 19 homes in Albert St have impacted the organisation’s ability to plan improvements.

The next Community Communication Meeting will be held at Eumundi State School on 29 October at 10am.

Eumundi pools better than ever
Both pools at the Eumundi Aquatic Centre are open to the public after completion of minor capital works by SCC. Well done to SCC, its contractors and the Eumundi Aquatic Centre management and staff for helping minimise the impact on pool users.

The $1.162B Gympie Bypass is jointly funded with the Australian Government committing $929.6M and the Qld Government $232.4M. Qld Minister for Transport and Main Roads Bart Mellish said, “Since the start of construction in October 2020, over 6 million cubic meters of earth has been shifted from cuts to fill areas and 43 bridge structures have been built along the new section of Bruce Highway.”

Barbertina’s new home
After 8 years at The Pavilion Eumundi, owner Tina McKay has moved Barbertina’s Barber to ‘front and centre’ on 69 Memorial Dr Eumundi (next to The Tiki Bar) and is open for business.
Although a barber is traditionally known as a place to cut and style men’s hair and beards, Tina also offers ladies’ and kids’ cuts, eyebrow waxing, brow and lash tinting and hair tinsel.

New wellness facility opens
The Imperial Hotel Boutique Accommodation (formerly known as HOLA) has recently opened a brand-new wellness facility in Eumundi. The
new luxury facilities include a heated mineral pool, hot spa with jacuzzi jets, a bbq area and fire pit, as well as day beds and sun lounges.
The pub is still undergoing extensive renovations, with stage one to see an all-new front bar, gaming room and TAB. Stage 2 will include the largest kids’ games room on the Sunshine Coast and a new restaurant.

Business awards
Nominations for the 2024 Sunshine Coast Business Awards close on 26 August. The awards are in their 29th year and recognise impressive business success stories across the Sunshine Coast.
While individuals can nominate a business they think stands out, it is the business that must apply. There are 17 categories covering both small and large, new and old enterprises. Most popular sectors include: hospitality; experiences; professional services; retail; trade and services; education and training; health and wellness; and building and construction. The Export and Business of the Year awards are drawn from the winners of the categories.
Finalists will be announced on 19 September and the Awards Gala takes place on 9 November.

TOP THINGS TO DO THIS WINTER

Noosa Botanic Gardens
The beautiful Noosa Botanic Gardens at Lake Macdonald are a 5min drive out of Cooroy. The 8ha gardens on the shore of the lake contain a range of native and exotic plant species. Paths wind through the gardens, leading to hidden spots perfect for picnicking or watching the wildlife. On the first Sunday of each month the gardens host live music 10am-12.30pm for all the family to enjoy, including your furry fourlegged friends – dogs are welcome on leash.

Local lookouts
We are lucky to have a number of impressive lookouts in our area. The closest to Eumundi is Ball Lookout on Eumundi Range Rd. The view is across to Eerwah Vale and beyond and is a great spot to watch the sunset.
At the end of Panorama Dr in Doonan is another spectacular lookout, boasting views from the sea to the hinterland. It's a great spot for visitors to orientate themselves.
Point Glorious, Belli Park offers a breathtakingly huge vista, but a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended to get there. The lookout offers picnic tables and a toilet, so a great place to enjoy a spot of lunch whilst enjoying the views back towards Eumundi.

Dunethin
Dunethin Jetty is situated on the quiet Dunethin Lake off Maroochy River. It's an incredibly tranquil spot surrounded by nature. A flat track takes you from the road to the jetty, so it's easily accessible for all. If you're looking for somewhere to just stop and enjoy the beauty of the region whilst listening to bird song and the occasional splash from a fish jumping out of the water, then this is the place.
Dunethin Rock is just around the corner and offers views over the Maroochy River and farmland.
Amazeworld
Located in Tanawha, Amazeworld is a great place to take the family. Voted Business of the Year in the 2023 Sunshine Coast Business Awards, Amazeworld is a fantastic day out. The impressive hedge maze hides dragons, fairies, trolls and unicorns thanks to an Augmented Reality experience. There is also a playground, mini golf, puzzles and so much more. This day out should guarantee parents a quiet night as the kids will be exhausted.

Preparing property for bushfires
August is the start of our coast’s dry season and bushfire season. A well-prepared home is easier to defend and reduces the risk to surrounding properties. Prepare by mowing lawns regularly, keeping gutters clear, trimming low-lying branches and having an emergency kit and household plan.
Properties are more at risk if they are close to bushland, have a bushfire history in the area, greenery is within 20m of buildings and structures are built on a slope.
Check your property’s level of risk with the post code checker found on the Qld Fire Department’s website. You'll find updates and important links on council’s Disaster Hub website and app.
Coming up this financial year
The 2024-25 budget was approved by council on 20 June which means there is now certainty of funding around some upcoming projects.

Planning has begun for the Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Centre at Maroochy River, with $1.2M allocated to design a fantastic new venue for Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Travel across the division will be smoother with the staged upgrade to North Arm Yandina Creek Road continuing at Yandina Creek.
And an investment of $515,000 will be made to improve the visitor experience at Doonan Creek Environment Reserve Verrierdale.

Eumundi Streetscape makeover underway
After extensive engagement with our local community and businesses, I’m very happy to see construction on the Eumundi Streetscape Project now underway.
The stunning new streetscape is in keeping with Eumundi’s character and reflects the communityled vision for the town centre. The upgrades along Memorial Dr will help the street operate safely, efficiently and enhance the look and experience of the bustling town while improving accessibility for everyone.
We recognise the importance of keeping the main street and markets open for business during construction which is why the works will be staged in zones to minimise disruption to our community. Stay up to date by subscribing to receive project updates and information on construction works by searching ‘Eumundi Streetscape’ on council’s website.

I'm pleased that the Land and Environment Court has approved a supermarket at the southern end of Eumundi. This is a good outcome and I'm looking forward to seeing the timeline for construction from the Altum Property Group. I acknowledge the support from our local community for a supermarket to be provided in town.

families that is experiencing a tough time due to dad suffering a serious illness. All four of his sons play rugby, so life is extraordinarily busy. Unfortunately, their father is in hospital for an extended period and unable to see them play.
In an incredible show of support, the club recently organised a camera crew to film each of his son's games, so he could watch their games from hospital. Now that is thinking outside the box and going the extra mile to make someone's day.
In addition, knowing that mum is busy travelling back and forth to Brisbane, the club has organised Meal Train. Meal Train is an app that allows people to choose a meal and a day to be delivered, ensuring the boys get nutritious meals made for them and easing the burden on the family.
When the unexpected strikes, having a caring group of people take initiatives like this speaks volumes about their kindness. Great work Peregian Saints Rugby Union Club!

Shout out to the lifesavers
Our surf lifesavers live and breathe kindness –their job is literally to save lives. A local family recently required the services of the Westpac Surf Life Saving helicopter when a 10yo boy and his father got caught in a rip at Sunshine Beach. “I thought we were going to die,” said Max. “We were swept out and I had no energy.”
Thanks to the fast-thinking surf lifesavers, Max and his dad were reunited safely with their family and live to say thanks! So next time you see a surf lifesaver, say thank you for their kind service.
This column is brought to you by the Kind Community Project, a free space to share, cheer and celebrate kindness at home, at work and in our communities. Qld’s Sunshine Pantry
As part of the Curated Plate festival, 70 regional producers showcased their wares at Qld’s Sunshine Pantry on 28 July at The Station SC. It was a great opportunity to talk to stall holders, sample local produce of all kinds and take home some amazing products for your own pantry. Local chefs, including Tom Hitchcock – Head Chef at Spirit House in Yandina and Australian Professional Chef of the Year 2023 – showed us how to make some special dishes. Just go easy on the chilli if you need to!

Noosa Alive!
Noosa Alive! has put on some great shows. Tom Gleeson of Hard Quiz fame was as irreverent as ever at The J, speaking to his ‘older demographic’ as he called us. Classical pianist Simon Tedeschi and actor John Bell AO OBE, founder of Bell Shakespeare company, teamed up and presented a show that married music and poetry. These were just two of the many performances across music, theatre and performance arts that some of us were lucky to be able to experience.

The Little Mermaid
The much-loved underwater fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, was presented by local school students at Good Shepherd Lutheran College. Brought to life with spectacular costumes, sets, song and dance, over 90 students from Yr4 to Yr7 carried the audience to a magical under-sea kingdom. It truly was an amazing display of talent and passion.

Beyond the tooth
Dental Health Week runs from 5-11 August and is the Australian Dental Association's annual oral health campaign.
Dentists play a crucial role in your overall health. After 15 years as a dentist, I have noticed that people think dentistry is only about teeth and gums. While the central part of our job is diagnosing and treating ailments of the oral cavity, we also look for signs of other diseases during your oral exam.
During a dental exam, we will call out several numbers, and use words like buccal, posterior, and lingual – which will seem like we are talking another language which, I guess, to an extent, we are. This part of the exam is all about the teeth.
Then you will notice we start saying things like crenation of the lateral borders of the tongue, or floor of mouth screened and clear. These
words indicate that we are now assessing for oral manifestations of systemic disease – we are also looking for cancer. Just 2 months ago one of my colleagues discovered a squamous cell carcinoma in a patient's mouth. This client is now undergoing treatment, which will hopefully be life-saving.
I know this sounds disgusting, but we are also smelling your breath. And no, it's not to see if you brushed your teeth before coming to see us. The smell of a person's breath can give us insight into a person's health. Believe it or not, people who have anorexia, bulimia, or uncontrolled diabetes all have a distinctive fruity smell, which is evident during a dental visit. On noticing this during an examination, your dentist will encourage you to seek medical advice and treatment.
Several body diseases and illnesses show early manifestations in the mouth. Patients presenting with recurrent periodontal (gum) abscesses may be showing early signs of leukaemia or diabetes. Vitamin deficiencies, autoimmune diseases like lupus and Crohn's, and silent reflux can’t be hidden from a dentist's scrutiny. All of these conditions have oral signs. Vitamin deficiencies can also lead to loose teeth – think scurvy and pirates with no teeth. Crohn's disease and silent reflux appear as unusual wear patterns on the backs of the teeth.
In Australia, healthdirect.gov.au recommends seeing your dentist once every 6 months and for children within 6 months of getting their first tooth. So, if you are due or overdue for your dental checkup, remember that we will not only be checking your teeth, but also assessing your overall health.

Regular dental checks and cleans are a very healthy habit to follow. And yes, we will be asking you the last time you flossed. We would love to hear you say, “Every day, doc!” but we understand that, more than likely, your answer will be, "Well, you should remember, doc, because you were the last person to do it.”
Happy Oral Health Week! Remember keep brushing and flossing to ensure you have happy and healthy teeth. Dr Sarah Rose – Eumundi Dental
BUSINESS INNOVATION
Getting the edge
Getting an edge on a knife and keeping it is something that used to take a lot of skill and time. The advent of the electric knife sharpener has made keeping knives sharp both quick and easy. However, it's still unusual for your average household to have one at home!
Gordon Mock knows how important it is to keep knives sharp. Before he retired and moved to the Sunshine Coast, he ran a very successful poultry and meat store in Sydney and made sure all his knives were always in good condition.
When he first moved to Tewantin, he didn't know a lot of people but was invited around to some neighbours for dinner and couldn't help noticing how blunt their knives were. As a favour he offered to sharpen their knives, using his home electric sharpener.
"It's far more pleasurable and easier to prepare food with a sharp knife,” said Gordon.

Word got around quickly and before too long he was sharpening a lot of people's knives. He now runs his knife sharpening service from home. Plus, he has a lot of new friends in and around Tewantin.
Gordon encourages anyone with a little spare time who needs a bit of money to start a knife sharpening service. There is no shortage of people who need it, and he's happy to help get you started.
"I run my knife sharpening business in my own time and make a minimum of $60/hour with very few overheads. You can recoup your setup costs in a matter of weeks."

History of jazz in Australia
The Noosa Jazz Festival is set to kick off on 22 August and will be very well attended based on past events. There will be multiple bands playing in various venues, which gives those attending the opportunity to wander around and listen to the different sounds and playing styles of some very talented musicians.
Have you ever wondered how jazz got started in Australia? Jazz has been around in some form in Australia since just after the cessation of WWI. This was marked by several performances by Belle Sylvia and her jazz band, generally regarded as Australia’s first jazz band. Performances by visiting bands from the USA in 1923 then resulted in this genre of music becoming the most popular in the nation.
The late 1920’s became a time of great change in music and the popularity of jazz increased due to its aggressive and energetic sound. However, during the Great Depression (1929-1939) jazz was overtaken by more sombre and soothing forms of music such as American popular songs.
As Australia began to emerge from the
Depression, the 1930’s saw the emergence of swing – a more widespread accepted jazz idiom – as it was more appealing. It did, however, rekindle the popularity of jazz.
Melbourne and Sydney were the main centres of early jazz. In the early 1940’s a concert of ‘hot jazz’ was presented in Melbourne that featured Graeme Bell’s band, Don Banks and others in a big jam session. This was done to highlight the emergence of jazz improvisation that drew a clear distinction between jazz and other forms of music, including swing.
WWII saw the move back to sentimental music. However, with the increasing influx of American armed forces in Australia, this saw a revitalisation of jazz, due to the high quality of jazz players amongst the visiting troops.
By the end of the war through to the early 1960’s jazz further distanced itself from other music genres into two main types – modern and traditional. Visiting jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Buddy Rich and Dave Brubeck had a huge effect on the jazz movement in Australia, where local jazz bands learnt so much from these visiting jazz stars. Australian jazz began to develop its own style, incorporating many forms of overseas jazz formats as well as benefiting from a growing multicultural immigrant population.
Australian jazz has survived the emergence of genres such as ‘rock-and-roll’ and maintained a strong following of ardent supporters, as it continues to have an excellent reputation for producing quality jazz performers on the world stage. Greg Ison

International Friendship Day
Did you know the original idea for a day of friendship came from Hallmark cards in the 1930’s? In 2011, 30 July was declared as the International Day of Friendship by the General Assembly of the United Nations.
To celebrate the importance of friendships, Eumundi State School students created a colourful hand rainbow. The hand rainbow activity focuses on the importance of friendships, kindness, empathy, being inclusive, and although we are all different, when we come together it creates something beautiful. The students discussed the importance of positive friendships, how to resolve conflicts, how to be a good friend and ways to be inclusive.
“We had great conversations around conflict resolution, looking at things from a different perspective – being curious about what our friends and peers are thinking, and challenging ourselves to leave the judgement behind and look at those around us with kind eyes,” said Chappy Sam. Robyn Simpson

Multicultural Qld Month
August is Multicultural Qld Month. Councils across the state are hosting events to acknowledge the rich cultural diversity of our towns and regions, whether it is on the sports field, in community gardens, at work, in theatre or when sharing a meal.
While we often read in the press about the negative effects of migration, there are many positives. Overall, Australia has benefited from migration. In 2021, the Australian Centre for Population partnered with The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to investigate the impacts of migration on the Australian economy.
The resulting papers were released over 2023 and 2024. Key findings included that migrants boost the labour productivity of Australian-born workers. On average, a region with a 10% larger migrant share (e.g. 33% instead of 30%) has a 1.3% larger regional wage difference, indicating a positive link between migration and labour productivity.
In addition, migration to Australia had led to more patents, that is, an increase in innovation. On average, a 1 percentage point increase in the regional employment share of higher-educated migrants (those with at least a college degree) relative to total employment leads to a 4.8% rise in regional patent applications over a 5-year period. The OECD found that migration’s impact on wellbeing and development depends on seamless integration and concerted efforts by different levels of government and communities.
Behind every migration statistic, there are individuals or families trying to start a new life. Multicultural Qld Month is all about acknowledging that those families and individuals make our communities stronger.

The Cooran-based realism artist collected $1,000 for his oil on canvas portrait Backstreet Madonna, a breakaway from his characteristic charcoal works. Mr Brennan said he is usually a people’s choice favourite, with judges rarely selecting his work for mainstream category wins.
Self-taught, Lew started creating works in 1965. The winning portrait was inspired by a Louisiana
Backstreet Madonna
girl and is one of a series of artworks highlighting hair more than anything else. “I really enjoy charcoal, and I love pushing boundaries in the direction of hyperrealism. Most of my work is horses, but it’s challenging to get hair right. It’s interesting to see hair falling across a person’s face and then try to re-create it.”
The sensitive portrayal titled Reluctant Model by Hervey Bay artist Mabs Vandenberg won the $3,000 RJR Property Best in Show Award. Judges Tony Gill and Kevin Wilson said the portrait was soft and engaging, giving a sense of confidence but also vulnerability. It demonstrated a lovely display of skill and use of drawing material.
TRANSPORT
Control the speed
SCC is urging the state government to implement mandatory limiters on e-transport to improve safety.
At its recent Ordinary Meeting, Council voted to progress a motion to the Local Government of Qld’s (LGAQ) Annual Conference to seek statewide support. The motion states “that the LGAQ call on the state government to introduce mandatory device limitations and standards to control the speed and capabilities of personal mobility devices.”
SCC Mayor Rosanna Natoli said, “Many private e-transport users are clearly operating their personal mobility devices at high and dangerous speeds. The enforcement of these private e-scooter users falls to Qld Police and according to RACQ (2023), between 1 January 2019 and 30 September 2023, there had been 3,305 hospital
presentations in Qld due to incidents involving e-transport devices.”

New EV charging station
Electric vehicle (EV) drivers are ‘getting a boost’ thanks to The Ginger Factory’s unveiling of Qld’s newest Tesla Supercharger and Destination Charging site on 2 August.
Located in the carpark of this tourist destination, and open 24-hours a day to any EV drivers, it will house 6 superchargers and 6 wall connectors, capable of recharging vehicles in approximately 45min, making it one of the biggest Tesla Supercharger Stations in Australia.
Tom Himstedt, Managing Director of Buderim Food Pty Ltd said, “The Ginger Factory is conveniently located less than 2kms off the Bruce Hwy which carries thousands of people to and from Brisbane and beyond every day. As a free admission tourist attraction, it’s also the perfect place for drivers to rest and recharge themselves and their passengers, as well as their EV.”

During the month of July, Eumundi Police received 168 calls for police assistance or emergency responses. July 2024 has now broken the Eumundi division record for most calls for police assistance in a single month – and the highest since I arrived in December 2018.
In the first 7 months of 2024 Eumundi Police have submitted 260 charges before the court. This follows the trend that Eumundi station is the highest performing proactive small station on the Sunshine Coast, thus continuing to work for the safety of our community.
Some of the investigations this month include: 14 domestic violence investigations; 1 stalking investigation; a stolen motor vehicle; possession of dangerous drug offences; 10 stealing offences; 2 assaults; and 6 breach of bail offences. Eumundi police have also detected 4 drink drivers throughout July. A 51yo Eumundi man was arrested for drink driving at 0.235% – nearly 5 times the legal limit for driving. The offender was already disqualified as he had been charged with 2 previous drink drive offences in 7 months and 3 disqualified driving offences. Eumundi Police objected to his bail due to the fact that he was consistently found driving drunk near Eumundi State School and a high risk to our community. The offender was kept in custody for 14 days and released on a suspended sentence with a 2-year disqualification and vehicle plates confiscated for 90 days. Another drink driver from Eumundi also had a high reading of 0.184%.
Also detected was 1 drug driver and police attended 7 traffic crashes with injuries and one person attempting to evade police. Highway Patrol Sunshine Coast issued 20 infringement notices for speeding and hooning during July.
Just a reminder to our community that our part time administration officer who works Monday and Wednesdays is currently on holidays. The team at Eumundi will open the counter when possible, in between attending jobs, but if you need police, we will always come to you. Call Policelink on 131 444 or 000 for emergencies. Please stay safe and call if you need. Until next month.
