Europalia.europa will be an outstanding edition: from October 2007 to February 2008 the public will get the chance to discover the culture of not one country, but all 27 Member States of the European Union, in the year we celebrate its 50th anniversary. This europalia.europa festival is a great challenge. Given the impossible task of presenting every aspect of European culture, we chose to focus on certain landmarks in our collective cultural memory, not forgetting the great artists of today and the promising young talents of tomorrow. It soon became apparent that dialogue and circulation as sources of inspiration should become the central theme of the festival. The festival is a diptych, on one hand we go in search of what culturally links us and on the other, we offer an overview of the wealth and variety of culture in all the Member States. Europalia.europa is the joint endeavour of many people in the 27 countries who share the same passion for art and culture. Europalia.europa exists because of them, for them and for all fellow European citizens. EUROPALIA Team

/ the grand atelier pathways of art in europe (5th-18th centuries)

05.10.2007 → 20.01.2008 Brussels | Centre for Fine Arts |

Rue Ravenstein 2 – 1000 Brussels

Since earliest times, a thriving artistic exchange has existed in Europe. Artists, artworks and patrons travelled via waterways, trade and pilgrimage routes, influencing as they went the entire continent and initiating new dialogues. At the dawn of the Middle Ages, Europe resembled one immense artist’s atelier. “The Grand Atelier” follows the journeys of famous and lesser-known artists between the th and 18th centuries, their ideas, artworks and patrons. This adventure includes great masters such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Dürer, Rubens, Van Eyck and Donatello, but also ivory carvers from the time of Charlemagne and 12th century Flemish goldsmiths. Without attempting to be exhaustive, this exhibition focuses on 14 typically European artistic phenomena that spread across Europe like shock waves. The visitor will discover how in the Middle Ages, Irish monks with their superb manuscripts such as the Book of Dimma influenced mainland Europe, how great and lesser-known Renaissance masters entered into dialogue or how the immense sketches of Gothic cathedrals circulated and inspired master builders throughout the continent. The some 0 pieces in this exhibition – amongst which manuscripts, ivories, metalwork, drawings, sculpture, textiles and paintings... – have been lent by more than 1 0 prestigious European collections, including: Narodni Gallerie (Prague), Staatliche Museen (Berlin), Prado (Madrid), Louvre (Paris), Trinity College Library (Dublin), Uffizi (Florence), Rijks- museum (Amsterdam), Kunsthistorisches Museum (Vienna), Biblioteka Jagiellonska (Cracow), Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Fürstliche Sammlungen Liechtenstein (Vaduz). The eye-catching event of europalia.europa!

Not only the great artists of the past but also their contemporary counterparts find a place in this European arts festival. What are for today’s great writers, dramatists, musicians, directors, ... the greatest sources of inspiration in European art history? In a contemporary sub-section running in parallel to the “The Grand Atelier” exhibition, the film “27x27x27” will show one famous contemporary artist from each Member State answering the following question: “Which artwork is the most symbolic for you in the history of European art?” For “27X27X27”, cameraman Luc Vrydaghs and photographers Michiel Hendryckx and Johan Jacobs have travelled across Europe to meet 27 personalities as ambassadors of European art, to hear them explain which artwork is for them the most remarkable in European culture and for which they have a particular affinity. This is yet again a journey through Europe and an artistic dialogue along several milestones of European art history. Amongst those interviewed are the Austrian architect Hans Hollein, the Portuguese writer José de Sousa Saramago and the French artist Daniel Buren. The chosen works, some prestigious and famous, others more modest and unknown, reflect the personal experience of each artist. The film can be seen in the exhibition but will also circulate in the form of a “moving box” to other cultural venues in Belgium. “27x27x27” will also give the general public an opportunity to choose their most important European artwork.

production ZIEZEDOEN primarily makes programmes for the VRT (Eén and Canvas), a Belgian Dutch-language television channel. Popular shows of ZIEZEDOEN such as “De Bende van Wim” and “Het Bourgondisch Complot” were nominated for several awards, notably the Radio and Television Critics Prize. In parallel, artistic and satirical programmes such as “Nefast voor de feestvreugde” and “Het Peulengaleis” have been broadcast for several seasons.

direction Luc Vrydaghs is trained at the RIKSO Academy of Art (Antwerp), the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp) in sculpture and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Ghent) in film animation, and it is for the latter that he won the prize for “Best Montage” at the Animation Film Festival in Brussels. His most recent documentary series examines life in and around petrol stations across the world and was broadcast on Canvas. For “Gas Station Zuid-Afrika”, Luc Vrydaghs won the FIPA Silver Award in Biarritz (2004) and was nominated for the international competition at the Vues d’Afrique festival in Montreal (2004).

13.10.2007 → 09.12.2007

For many centuries, market places and squares have played a central role in European society. They have always been important commercial and social meeting places, where traders, artists, troubadours and churchgoers came across each other. Agorafolly allows 27 promising young talents (all aged under ) to bring 27 squares in the heart of Brussels to life, transforming them into places of encounter with contemporary European art. Lots were drawn to allocate the 27 squares to each Member State and their respective artist(s). Each artist then visited his/her as yet empty square to gain inspiration for the task in hand: to create a European artwork of the future. The Agorafolly artists’ trail is a marvellous example of art in the European Union today and offers a glimpse at what it could be in the future... Agorafolly starts in the Centrale Electrique (European Centre for Contemporary Art), where Agorafolly Inside also takes place and on the following squares: 01. The second part of Agorafolly takes place inside the Centrale Electrique, the starting point of the open-air artists’ trail. This new contemporary art centre, opened just two years ago, welcomes the same 27 young artists. In Agorafolly Inside the search for contemporary artistic expression within the European Union takes place in a celebration of diversity in unity and each artist has been asked to contribute a work that particularly expresses the identity of his/her country. No fewer than 180 artistic treasures show the unity and diversity of the cultures that formed part of the Portuguese trading empire. Separate sections take us along the different routes: from Africa to Brazil and via the Indian Ocean to China and Japan. The cultural exchanges between the Portuguese and these “discovered” territories produced extraordinary objects: ivory salt cellars from West Africa, crucifixes from the converted kingdom of Kongo, Namban screens that show European seamen, traders, and priests as seen through Japanese eyes... Maps, navigational instruments, manuscripts, and early printed books take the visitor on a journey in the wake of the great voyages of discovery. Step by step, the world then taking shape is charted. A contemporary section takes a look at the sequel to the great discoveries: today’s globalisation.

“Brilliant Europe” celebrates 800 years of jewellery history in Europe. Each of the some 200 jewels and artworks in the exhibition were selected according to two fundamental criteria: their spectacular quality and their individual history. The vast majority belonged to personalities known in Europe for their contribution to currents of thought, or to diplomatic, economic, social or cultural relations. These jewels played a highly symbolic role. In a Europe where, over the centuries, the reigning dynasties never ceased strengthening the ties between them, jewellery was a sign of status, wealth and power. In addition, the rigorous rules authorizing its wearing according to rank or circumstance, testify to the sophisticated codes maintained between dynasties, in Portugal just as in Sweden, in the United Kingdom just as in the AustroHungarian Empire. These exceptional jewels will be surrounded by paintings, miniatures, engravings and accessories such as the boxes intended to protect them or other expensive trinkets cherished by their owners.

The lively and original exhibition “All Roads Lead to Rome” gathers the accounts of journeys made by famous painters, writers and philosophers such as Montaigne, Erasmus, Goethe, Stendhal, Balzac, Chateaubriand and Alexandre Dumas, who crossed Europe headed mainly for Italy. Their chosen routes and halting places, the inns and different currencies, the often difficult and surprising travelling conditions, and the good and bad encounters with other travellers, will be illustrated by the words of some and the paintings of others, including Anne-Louis Girodet, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Joseph Vernet, Hubert Robert, Jan Both, Johannes Lingelbach, Michaël Sweerts, Solomon Van Ruysdael, Nicolas Tournier and Jacques Volaire. A variety of objects relating to travel will support these personal stories.

The European cartographers have depicted Europe throughout the centuries in several ways: allegorically, physically, politically,... Voluntarily or not, they sometimes took liberties with the reality. But this also was changing during the periods, specially relating to state borders. The exhibition shows maps from the Middle Ages till the 20th century. The maps vary in aspect, aim and scale and have only one common feature: their subject. Grouped chronologically, they show the fascinating evolution of the continent and of its cartography.

12.10.2007 → 02.02.2008 In a real journey to the heart of flowers, the exhibition presents sixteen different floras, each finely drawn, engraved and hand-coloured. They are proof of the diversity of European vegetation and take the visitor on a journey to the borders of Russia, Portugal, the Netherlands and Sardinia. Alongside these are some fifty botanical models, in themselves true works of art. These three-dimensional objects were designed to show not only the shape of plants, but also their hidden structure, down to the smallest detail. curators | Anne-Marie Bogaert-Damin Mon > Thu 09:00 > 20:00 (Fri > 17:00 / Sat > 13:00) closed: 01.11.2007, 11.11.2007, 25.12.2007 > 01.01.2008 info | reservation | tickets

/ journey to the heart / mythical europe – contemporary of europe europe In February 2007, Justin Leighton and his family embarked on a journey in search of the central point of Europe. The ever expanding European Union and advances in technology have meant that this central point has often changed. In their journey through Europe along these points, it became clear to the family that one factor linked all these sites: the commonplace. This photo exhibition shows a field in Germany, a small town in Poland, a wood in Belgium, which have all at one time been the centre of Europe.

/ the library of the grand atelier By way of the book, cultural traditions were established. Their international diffusion was to a great extent guaranteed thanks to competition or collaboration between printing workshops. The central exhibition of europalia.europa, “The Grand Atelier”, tackles this theme by demonstrating exactly what a book is, par excellence, the most mobile vehicle for thought and images. To mark the occasion, Europalia is organising a project about book sharing. You are invited to visit the Europalia library where you can bring art books and child books. In our library, not only the sharing of ideas and knowledge becomes a practical reality, but also the possibility of encounters and cultural exchange.

The dances performed by them to the highest professional level, are among the best achievements of well-known Bulgarian choreographers and composers. In this way young Bulgarian talents congratulate Europe in the year of Bulgaria’s accession to the European Union. This performance allows the audience to take a look at every Bulgarian ethnographical region and feel the beauty and magic of the unique Bulgarian folk dances.

The cross roads of many cultures, Belgium has long since been a cradle of artistic dialogue and exchange, reaching far beyond the borders of her small territory. She lies at the source of a strikingly rich artistic past, ranging from the Flemish Primitives in the Middle Ages to the Art Nouveau artists of the early twentieth century. These have won Belgium an important place in European cultural history. Today, Belgium is also rich in artistic talent and Belgian artists are helping to further build the cultural future of Europe. Obviously this will be reflected in Belgian productions at the europalia.europa festival. On the musical front, the Belgian programme is dedicated to the Franco-Flemish polyphony and its spread throughout Europe during the Renaissance. For the performing arts, three contemporary productions will depict Europe of yesterday, today and tomorrow in their own particular style. Also the originality and creativity of Belgian animated films will find a place in Anima 2008. EUROPALIA Team

Isn’t broaching serious subjects in a light tone the best way to go about them? Charlie Degotte, tireless creator, iconoclast steeped in humour and champion of stimulating nonsense, has developed a very personal and fascinating way of working. He forcibly seizes reality in a poetic and fanciful tone. He presents a musical variety show about a Europe under construction or in the process of reconstruction. A bid for the artistic representation of Europe at the dawn of the 21st century staged as a variety show. Text and music: David Lescot Director: Charlie Degotte

“Beards Trilogy” is theatre, opera, visual arts, movement, conjuring, circus, video, puppet theatre, and live computer-driven music. The “Beards Trilogy” is a rewrite of three of literature’s great myths: Blue Beard, Othello and Faust. With these three stories, the play turns in concentric circles around the very contemporary issue of the manipulation of meaning through images.

The subject of migration in the European Union has become a controversial issue in recent ↙ Fort Europa, © Uri Rapaport 2

years. Every Western European country has to cope with large influxes of people from different ethnic backgrounds, all keen to retain their cultural identity. In Europe, identification with a non-European culture is seen as a threat. Soon there is a sense that “ethnic minorities” are only here to reap the benefits of the achievements of the free, prosperous West, while contributing little themselves. In recent decades, Europe’s economic instability has become the overriding argument for calling a halt to migration. But if we keep the gates locked, what sort of democrats would that make us? On the other hand, are we able to cope with such cultural diversity? Are we prepared to question our cultural identity so fundamentally? The Flemish writer Tom Lanoye was asked to write a play that explores these questions. Text: Tom Lanoye Music: Veenfabriek / SOIL

film

/ belgian animation film - anima 2008 Belgian animation films enjoy a reputation for originality and creativity in Europe. They won immediate acclaim with their first great authors, Servais and Frydman, who followed the Surrealist painters in the Magical Realism movement. The next generation did not continue in this direction but successfully tried other styles and techniques. This success often resulted in the films being screened in international festivals, and Belgian artists had the opportunity to meet their European counterparts quite early on. ANIMA will illustrate the interlinked influences – either conscious or unconscious – with a selection of about thirty short animated films from Belgium and other European countries.

Denmark is booming and blossoming with young, fresh new artists. The artistic landscape is continuously growing and expanding in the fields of cinema, music, fine arts and design, and more and more attention from abroad is being paid to the Danish art scene – in spite of the fact that Denmark is a small country. It is also an old country with deep-rooted traditions, but if we look at some of the participating artists in Europalia 2007, we see a strong new fundament of young talents, that both communicate with the history of art in Danish context, and what we could call Denmark on the move – internationally, artistically and historically.

/ schritte verfolgen Susanne Linke

Susanne Linke is one of the pioneers of German dance theatre. Linke conceived “Schritte verfolgen” in 198 , together with the choreographer and artist VA Wölfl. She considers it to be her artistic credo. In this autobiographical solo she returns to experiences from her childhood: as a result of illness, she only started learning to hear and speak at the age of six, so movements and gestures were her first means of expression. In 2007 Linke reconstructed the piece with three female dancers and added a new dimension: the process of aging, reaching maturity, and the joyful confirmation of the desire to “be” at every stage of life. As informed amateurs will already know, because of its unusual linguistic origins (Estonian is a Finno-Ugric language) and its place at the crossroads of history, very particular artistic productions find their source in the deeply European roots of Estonian culture. Works by writers like Emil Tode alias Tõnu Õnnepalu, testify to this. The comic strips by Priit Pärn, in direct dialogue with visual milestones of the Western world, show it. But it is above all discernible in its musical heritage, which Estonia is proud to present today in the heart of Europe. To introduce itself to the public of europalia.europa, Estonia joins forces with Latvia, its close neighbour in destiny, with which it shares similar traditions, and very often, common challenges as well as joy. / Tõnu Õnnepalu / Emil Tode Tõnu Õnnepalu is born 1962 and has published works under the pseudonyms of Emil Tode and Anton Nigov. He is one of the most interesting and internationally known Estonian prose authors. His real breakthrough came in 199 when he published “Border State” under the pseudonym Emil Tode for which he received the annual literary award given by the Baltic Assembly. In all his books, Õnnepalu seeks the answers to various crucial human questions covering love and loneliness, sexuality, social life and religious freedom, power over others and betrayal. Emil Tode will be in residence at Villa Hellebosch (Vollezele) from 17.09.2007 > 27.10.2007, in the framework of the project “Residences in Flanders” of the literary association Het Beschrijf and the Flemish Community. Light and darkness: a constant alternation, a fascinating co-existence, a magic fusion, everywhere: in nature, in matter, in spirit, in emotion, in history, in culture, in art; a central pattern in the history and arts of Europe. In the performance of the Hellenic Dance Company, light and darkness are turned into body motion, sound, concepts and feelings, through music and choreographies by major European and other creators and, mostly, through the passion and enthusiasm of young dancers. For the europalia.europa festival, the Hellenic Ministry of Culture has chosen a performance where young people – Europe’s hope – play the main part, expressing themselves through music and dance, a language both diachronic and common, in Europe and in the world. Historically, Spanish creativity has brought new ways of expression whilst echoing the importance of European culture. In the framework of the 2007 Europalia Festival, we will present just part of our rich and varied culture, paying special attention to some of its jewels, thus demonstrating European intercultural connections. Actor Rafael Álvarez “El Brujo”, a great theatre magus, is capable of expressing on stage the strong personality of characters such as Saint Francis of Assisi or the guide of the Blind Man of Tormes, an exemplar of the picaresque novel, which strongly influenced European literature. Music will be present in “The Silence of the Soul”, a concert transporting us back to the Renaissance and we will discover a lesser-known Bach in a version by one of the greatest Spanish music researchers, José Miguel Moreno.

Rafael Álvarez “El Brujo”

The Life of Lazarillo of Tormes deals with being an outcast, being hungry, and the difficulties of being a child. The parallel is obvious between the world of this child leading a blind man and the situation of so many children in developing countries, dying of hunger. History repeats itself.

/ san francisco, el juglar de dios - Dario Fo Rafael Álvarez “El Brujo”

It is mainly the colourful personality of this saint from the Middle Ages that is highlighted in this play. In addition to his personality, his talents also attracted the attention of Dario Fo who was known to have had a strong interest in popular culture, of which Saint Francis of Assisi is definitely an illustrious representative. The actor, Rafael Álvarez says: “At this moment, a ray of light from the Renaissance is illuminating my life”.

The originality of French aesthetics in new circus has gained it growing international success in recent years. Invented in France during the 1970s, this new style of circus is initially astonishing for its diversity. Far removed from the canonical model of traditional circus, each performance plunges the public into a curious universe. France, very attached to the concept of diversity and cultural excellence, has chosen an extraordinary artist to represent it during the Europalia festivities: Johann Le Guillerm. Founder of “Cirque ici”, Johann Le Guillerm is a timeless magician with a calm soul, who tames matter and reshapes it into the stuff of dreams. With the support of CULTURESFRANCE

“In former times gladiators faced tigers. Today, I face an iron bar. The original strength of the circus lies in doing strange things with everyday objects that everyone recognises.” Johann Le Guillerm In the circus ring, mechanical inventions take place, the laws of applied physics are demonstrated, full humour, poetry, and dreams. Johann Le Guillerm invites us to enjoy his dreams, his world, and his confrontation with the laws of nature. Thanks to him, the public find themselves immersed in a fascinating world of power and tension. Extraordinary and miraculous circus! This performance is organised in the framework of the “Hors Pistes, festival européen du cirque contemporain”, held at the Halles de Schaerbeek.

The Gate has a long-standing association with Beckett, presenting the first Beckett Festival in 1991, with all 19 of Beckett’s stage plays produced in Dublin and then New York (1996) and London (1999). Most recently the Gate played a major role in the Centenary Festival. The Gate has toured the world with Beckett productions, in particular Waiting for Godot, described as “the definitive production” and “flawless”, as well as “I’ll go on”, from “Molloy”, “Malone Dies” and “The Unamable”, starring Barry McGovern “the finest interpreter of Beckett’s plays in the world”. The leading and prominent figures we have chosen are all full of allusions to our idea of Europe and its history. Over the centuries, Italian culture has uniquely traced the growth of European civilisation, at the same time, enriching that civilisation immeasurably. This is something that, as Europeans, we all retain in our collective memory. We are turning to the culture of today to invent new words to help us redefine our role on contemporary stage.

An idea by Mauro Bigonzetti and Fabrizio Plessi Never has a story been narrated so often nor crossed so many geographic, cultural and class boundaries as Romeo and Juliet. In ancient Greece a myth, like the wind or a river, crossed lands and cultures, changing from story to story, but always carrying its profound meaning. And so, in our day, the myth of Romeo and Juliet crosses all the possible social categories of the western world. It probably is the best known story of our culture. Beyond the characters and setting, it is the emotions pervading the story that determine its main structure and touch our Western sensibilities. When she dropped her fan, the young Candide did not imagine for one moment in her pretty enamoured little head that, it would pass again and again from hand to hand, sowing discord in the village, to such an extent that it became impossible to know who liked who, and who would marry who. Luca Ronconi, a successor to Giorgio Strehler at the Piccolo Teatro of Milan, signs the production of this whirlwind romance. “Kyprogenia” meaning “to be born in Cyprus” takes its cue from the ancient Greek myth describing the birth of Aphrodite, the goddess of Love. “Kyprogenia” aims to appeal to young people, to convince them that Cypriot musical tradition is not something for the museum but a living organism that can take contemporary dimensions and evolve according to current conditions. The performance is infused with all the important milestones in the Cypriot musical tradition, ancient, medieval, folk and contemporary, only reinterpreting them in a wholly modern way. This is why it was felt that “Kyprogenia” should represent Cyprus at Europalia, a festival celebrating our European identity. Because it clearly manifests how an overwhelming legacy can express today’s feelings and expectations. Petros Dymiotis, Cultural Officer, Cultural Services, Ministry of Education and Culture

“The land that sings!” is the sound bite used to promote Latvia throughout the world. The power of the singing revolution, an internationally acclaimed opera company and gold medals for choral achievement are obvious proof. The true significance, however, lies deeper. The overwhelming pathos of 50 voices can only be achieved by the deeply individual creative talents of each singer, wherein, it’s clear that the total effect is far greater than the sum of its parts. It’s the DNA that imparts the ability to perform and convey a complex contemporary musical message whilst feeling a discernable ancient, perhaps even tribal, undercurrent. It’s an understanding that you can rely solely on that which is within, without props, effects or technics. This, in a nutshell, is a descriptive metaphor for the Latvian nation at the beginning of the 21st Century.

“Timeline” evokes interaction between gestured and musical language, between artists, between various periods of time. But interaction is significant also for Europeans as the European integration becomes intensified: taking time to get to know each other, it is through the interaction between Europeans that we reinforce the sense of belonging that inspires the European construction. “Luxembourg USA”: migration, immigration, integration – eminently European and contemporary themes, but also specifically Luxembourgish. A country of daily cross-border transit and immigration, during the course of history Luxembourg has seen the departure of almost a third of its population on adventures around the world. Christophe Wagner’s film highlights this subject and is also a fitting example of the excellent audio-visual production industry in Luxembourg, increasing in scale every day. The latest creation of Finnish choreographer Anu Sistonen continues the artistic cooperation between the cellist and composer André Mergenthaler. Indeed, according to the choreographer, the most interesting way of using dance movements is in association with live music on stage. “Timeline” is a choreographic creation that unites different periods in time: each scene is typical of an era and a period in time. The choreographer travels between the distant past and the present, and takes us into the future, near, distant and uncertain. The journey is accompanied on stage by the music of André Mergenthaler. / luxembourg, USA The history of the American Midwest is founded on the immigration of many communities in the 19th century. Among them, immigrants from Luxembourg formed a community in their own right that continues to prosper in this little-known part of the USA. In this film, Christophe Wagner, a young director concerned with human and social issues (awarded Best Promising Director at the Lëtzebuerger Filmpraïs), attempts to portray this conservative, religious, patriotic region of rural America through the eyes of Luxembourg settlers. Their way of life, family history and community feeling is the object of a contemporary story, both open and critical, far removed from stereotypical perceptions either side of the Ocean. For the countries participating in europalia.europa 2007, the festival is an occasion for cultural selfdefinition and identification inside the European cultural sphere. The Hungary of today is certainly a turbulent ground for exploration, experiment, criticism and self-criticism as well as passion and tradition. Artists in contemporary Hungary take what was perhaps always the strongest feature in their country one step further: the tradition of performing classical music. World music is another, new and emerging musical phenomenon with a rich mixture of Hungarian, Jewish, Gipsy and Balkan motives and traditions, based on profound musical education and virtuosity. Literature and theatre are the main arenas for moral and political self-reflection, and for communication between nations.

Especially for the europalia.europa festival, the Flemish-Dutch Culture House deBuren has made a series of Radio Books. They have added a typically European element to this series: cultural diversity. The European Union is a colourful collection of cultures and identities. Its ability to renew itself is an important part of the enormous diversity we encounter, from Nicosia to Vilnius, from Dublin to Bucharest. Dutch literature has improved during the last decades thanks to increased cultural diversity. The work of writers such as Hafid Bouazza, Ellen Ombre, Abdelkader Benali and Sana Valiulina has introduced new literary themes that enrich this culture. Through these Radio Books, deBuren wants to share the multidisciplinary nature of Dutch literature today with the europalia.europa public. Xander Stroo

Chris Haring, one of Austria‘s few “home-grown“ choreographers is a role model for European networking: as a dancer he toured with internationally renowned companies such as DV8 and Cie Willi Dorner but also as a solo artist (his dance piece “D.A.V.E.“ is one of the most successful creations in European contemporary dance history). As choreographer for his ensemble “liquid loft“ he has continued this success, engaging a changing group of talents from various European regions. “Running Sushi” is played out as if it was a drawn sequence from a comic strip in which a high jump by the performancers leads to classical pas-de-deux and the Way of the Samurai is sought on stage, while Feng-Shui is exercised in cyberspace.

In the age of animation, of the fun factor, of television shows, a society addicted to entertainment is veering towards a “superflat” communication culture. Reality is increasingly shifting towards a bi-dimensional surface: this is the message of the Running Sushi performance by Chris Haring and his company Liquid Loft. They are known for “Legal Errorist”, “Kind of Heroes” and My “Private Bodyshop”. Chosen from Polish artistic production of the last three years, the creations selected for europalia.europa reflect our cultural richness and diversity. They refer equally to national as well as European values. It is an intellectual and artistic debate on humankind today, based on myths as well as the foundations of Europe, an intergenerational anthology. A digest of work from each institution, from traditional Polish theatre to the avant-garde, from regional to national level, a fascinating reflection of a trans-border cultural heritage. It is the logical continuation of “Europalia 2001 Polska”, emphasising the Polish contribution to European culture, marked by a long multi-cultural tradition. Instytut Adama Mickiewicza

national theatre of warsaw

A dark, quasi-detective novel, “Cosmos” follows the classic noir motif to explore the arbitrariness of language, the joke of human freedom, and man’s attempt to bring order out of chaos in his psychological life. Within the genre of crime fiction, Gombrowicz explores the angst of human existence. Published in 196 , “Cosmos” is the last novel by Witold Gombrowicz (1904–1969) and his most sombre and multifaceted work. Two young men meet by chance in a Polish resort town in the Carpathian Mountains. Intending to spend their vacation relaxing, they find a secluded family-run pension. But the two become embroiled first in a macabre event on the way to the pension, then in the peculiar activities and psychological travails of the family running it. Gombrowicz offers no solution to their predicament. Arrangement and direction: Jerzy Jarocki Subtitled: French / Dutch

The rebellious young director Jan Klata has become famous for his controversial reading of national myths and brave interpretation of the classics. This time he tackles an extremely painful subject, ever present in the social and political consciences of both Poles and Germans: expulsion. It is one of the most difficult chapters of contemporary history, and the play itself will not only be an attempt to offer a “non-political” view of the problem of the resettlement, but also a revision of deep-rooted ideas on both sides of the border. dignity and courage. Today, fewer and fewer artists provoke uncertainty by posing fundamental questions. Wajda began in the era when film was regarded as an art with a capital “A”. The seventh art had another dimension. He comes from the generation of great cinematic masters, well rooted in their cultures from which they drew strength. Wajda never avoided difficult subjects. On screen, he has told all the drama of the modern history of Poland, without ever disguising actors or seeking metaphors. This global cinema legend is still very active: at the age of 80, Andrzej Wajda has decided to tell the tragic story of his own parents in a film about the massacre of Polish officers in 1940 at Katyn, to be released in autumn 2007.

Saramago has been a member of the Portuguese Communist Party since 1969, as well as an atheist and self-described pessimist. His views have aroused considerable controversy in Portugal, especially after the publication of “The Gospel According to Jesus Christ”. Saramago’s novels often deal with fantastic scenarios, such as “The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis” (1984, which won the PEN Award and the Independent Foreign Fiction Award), “The Stone Raft” (1986), “Blindness” (199 ). His works commonly present subversive perspectives on historic events, emphasizing the human factor rather than the official story. Some of his works can also be seen as allegories. In the year of celebration of the treaty of Rome and the country’s accession, Romania is proud to stand as a privileged partner in the europalia.europa festival. Throughout the centuries, Romanian culture has assimilated influences from all over Europe and beyond. At Europe’s south eastern border, in a region rich in various ethnic and cultural traditions, at the same time complementary and diverging. Romania has remained a mixture of complex, colourful, and shifting patterns united by language and geography. If language is a country, then contemporary Romania definitely proves this assertion correct. The europalia.europa programme represents this enchanting fusion that Romania is experiencing today: sophisticated, urbane, and avant-gardist. Reinterpreting, rethinking and reshaping its cultural and social identity, devastated by 50 years of dictatorship, Romania’s culture comes to endorse this quest for a mingling of trends, of past and present, of reality and hypothesis. www.roinfocenter.be

Mihai Manutiu’s “Electra”, adapted from Sophocles and Euripides, is a demonstration of the eternal tragedy, eternally present and willing to take shape today, but perpetually conserving the essence of its implacable destiny. The original encounter between texts of the great Greek tragedy – foundation of the great European cultural myths – and Maramures folk music, interpreted live by the Iza Group, creates an extraordinary mythology, producing a space for archaic confluences. The Mladinsko Theatre from Ljubljana celebrates its 50th anniversary. As masterpiece of the Slovenian contemporary theatre, Fragile! is portraying the destinies of individuals from the Eastern Europe coming to a West European metropolis. The second performance, a Slovenian-Belgian co-production, is the refined staging of the biblical Song of Songs. In the field of modern dance, the performances of the Slovenian choreographers are characterized by diversity, distinctiveness and the variety of poetics approaches and moves. A remarkable achievement for a small country like Slovenia. Slovenian puppeteers are trying to revive the ancient tradition of puppet mastery by creating new attractions in the theatre and get a place in the world of new arts.

This literary gem is brought to life by the superb Slovenian actors Robert Prebil and Olga Grad. A thoroughly Slovene-Belgian production. Direction: Jan Decorte Subtitled: Dutch / French

en-knap group

The international dance company En-Knap was founded in 199 in Leuven by dancer and choreographer Iztok Kovac and later moved to Ljubljana where it established itself as a non-profit production company Zavod En-Knap. The choreographer Iztok Kovac and long time En-Knap collaborators Andreja Rauch and Sašo Podgoršek created the first evening of the recently established permanent dance group whose presence is basically structured through the traditionally established En-Knap aesthetics. The dancers follow the choreographer’s attitude towards the mystery of celebration through the perception of various time periods, political and artistic revolutions interpreted through individual dancer’s intimacy. Choreography: Iztok Kovač, Andreja Rauch, Sašo Podgoršek

The performance is a display of four individual situations presented in a sequence of four stories: “Spring Water”, “Pavers”, “Two Gatherers”, “Weavers”, in which the performers focus on weaving the pattern of a carpet that should in the end document the performance and round it up as an entity. A being always in the process of conception, never finished or formed, always open to presentation – what would it be? In the history, the closest to such beings were monsters. puppet theatre festival

/ tiny cock-a-doodle doo

“Tiny Cock-a-Doodle Doo”, a play with traditional Slovenian puppets, is the first performance for children in Slovenian language (180 ). The figurines (the “lileks”) were discovered by an expert studying the history of folk theatre. In folk traditional, the rudimentary “lileks” had been used to depict humorous scenes. The resurrection of the play that enchanted people as early as 200 years ago, and the “lileks”, clearly show how it is possible to combine contemporary theatre with folk traditions. Direction: Niko Goršič Text: Jernej Kopitar, Valentin Vodnik

“Thumbelina” is one of the subtlest and most beautiful fairy-tales by the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen – a story about a little girl whose fragility takes her to different places and whose courage and love always help her find the right path. The Baroque musical heritage of what is Slovakia today,

for

centuries a crossroads of cultures and ideas, is still unknown to the music public. While the early Baroque period characterized by the plurality of styles and influences is not connected to well-known names, the middle and late Baroque music periods provide a richer picture through works by significant composers who, though far from major sources of inspiration, shaped Baroque music tradition in Central Europe. A different, yet clear information on the modes of practice and nature of Central European Baroque music is provided by anonymous pieces linked to Slovakia by way of their origin. Finland is bringing a modern dance performance, space/time work and circus to the europalia.europa festival. On the dynamic Finnish art scene forms of expression have caught up with traditional forms in the last few years. A powerful Finnish dance performance is presented in this section of this multi-cultural festival. They embody the fusion of Finnish and European traditions. A Finnish artist offers his answer to the question posed by the theme of a short film; what is the most important object in the history of European Art? His reply is a remarkable old cult and utility object, an elk’s head of stone. Installations works on the Place des Martyrs offer a fresh view of European public square culture as perceived through the eyes of a Finn. Irma Hjelt Director of the Finnish Cultural Institute

“Mirjami & Mikael” is a duet for a woman and a man dancer. The piece is about relationship issues combined with black humour. Boundaries are pushed to the extreme with strong emotions involved using the language of movement and improvisation. A slide show is a core part of the piece, directly reflecting the dancers’ movements and communicating with them and the audience. Satu Tuomisto is a Finnish choreographer and dance filmmaker. Her new duet “Mirjami & Mikael” takes in remote controlled cars, physical contact, laughter, 1970s wallpaper and saunas.

Created in 1996 by two Finns, Maksim Komaro and Jani Nuutinen, Circo Aereo is the first contemporary circus company in Finland. “Un cirque plus juste” is the second solo of a trilogy named “circus d’objects”, conceived and interpreted by Jani Nuutinen. A small track, artisanal lights, a convoy of small objects, treasures unearthed with the ferraillery, a radio that dictates rhythm and atmosphere... a whole circus full of surprises is built around these little ordinary wanders. This performance is organised in the framework of the “Hors Pistes, festival européen du cirque contemporain”, held at the Halles de Schaerbeek.

The United Kingdom is well-known for the diversity of its social make-up, and the opportunities and challenges that this brings. In its role as the United Kingdom’s cultural relations organisation, the British Council embraces a broad definition of culture, aiming both to support the best of UK creativity, and simultaneously to look at issues and challenges that affect countries throughout Europe and beyond. The United Kingdom has a strong history of theatre that challenges behaviours and attitudes in society, directly exploring such issues as health, education, human rights, good governance, race, gender and disability. Such theatre in its varying genres, challenges outdated perceptions of the UK, as well as addressing questions affecting societies Europe-wide. This is an extremely appropriate collaboration within the context of the Europalia festival which aims to learn what makes each of the 27 countries in Europe different but also examines what links them together.

A collaboration between renowned director Mick Gordon and leading philosopher A.C. Grayling, “On Religion” turns philosophical debate into challenging, gripping theatre, addressing the complex issues of faith and religion at a time when reasoned discussion seems as urgently needed as it is impossible. The transcripts from a series of interviews with influential thinkers and ordinary church and mosque-goers feed into this verbatim drama that tells the story of the conflicts within one family: between a secularist mother and her son who decides to become ordained as a priest. december dance 2007 December Dance is a new festival in Bruges and is organised by the Concertgebouw, Cultuurcentrum Brugge and Brugge Plus. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui was appointed curator for the first of the series. He himself dances in both old and brand new pieces, and presents the work of other artists he admires. Rubens, a genius at work In a special event, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium will be unveiling a unique collection of fifty or so original works from the studio of Rubens, as well as paintings that the great master from Antwerp produced with famous colleagues. The aim of the exhibition is to place the museum paintings in the context in which they were created and to offer the public a better understanding of the way in which Rubens and his team prepared the masterpieces for which they are famous.
