As a consequence of his stalking, threats and refusal to desist, the Firths went to the Italian authorities. Rick Genest, who shot to fame as a model in Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” music video and was known as Zombie Boy, has died just days before his birthday. The heavily tattooed model got his first tattoo at the tender age of 16 and went on to cover his entire body in ink over the following three years. Police confirmed the cause of death was suicide. According to the authorities, the 32-year-old supermodel had been suffering from mental health problems. Lady Gaga took to Twitter to pay tribute to her friend. “The suicide of friend Rick Genest, Zombie Boy is beyond devastating,” she wrote “We have to work harder to change the culture, bring mental health to the forefront and erase the stigma that we can’t talk about it.” A subject that needs to be talked about!

LEE Claus – you train with me five times a week, so I know how dedicated and disciplined you are, but what made you decide to get fit? CLAUS I started training when I was 44. Before then I had never been into sports nor set foot in a gym. I realised that my lifestyle, habits and nutrition were not right. I suffered from insomnia, fatigue and stress, was overweight and pretty much powerless, I felt weak, tired and negative all the time LEE Now you are in great shape. How do you maintain your form? CLAUS I am a hard gainer, so I need around 3000 calories a day and to achieve that I make sure

It’s never too late! that I eat and drink lots of protein and vitamins from meat, eggs and vegetables. I eat six times a day to keep my metabolism going and I drink at least four litres of water a day. Basically, I count calories, protein and good fats in rough measures to make sure that I am over the minimum I need to take in. I have one cheat day a week where I eat all the stuff I should not, except fried food and processed food - that’s a no-no even on cheat days!

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE LEE What would you define as the secret to becoming and staying fit? CLAUS Consistency is the key. Gradual results are what I am looking for as they keep me on track and keep me pushing. LEE What are the main benefits for you of being in shape? CLAUS I live a rather stressful life, with two little sons and my own business to take care of. Staying fit provides me with an edge when it comes to dealing with stress and problems. My

approach is so much more positive than it was before and that’s very good for business. LEE Assuming you work long hours, how do you find time to do it all? CLAUS That’s correct, about 60 hours a week and I spend about six hours a week on training. That has to be combined with taking care of my family and being a father who is actually there! It is possible, but only because the lifestyle I live today gives me that extra energy and drive. Thanks to the great training and good nutrition, I have more energy than I need. Without being in good form there is no way I could satisfy both my family’s and my clients’ needs the way I do now. And I have the added bonus of looking and feeling healthy. You cannot beat it! The chilled vibe is evident as soon as you walk in. The outside shaded dining area, with its cool blue and white sails, overlooks the beach area. Bono Beach also has a glassed fronted interior dining area for year round eating, as well as a rather funky interior reception area. If you just want to enjoy a drink - there is a more than tempting list - and to watch the world go by, the bar area is stripped back, chilled out and inviting, and a few patrons were unwinding with a couple of cocktails. The beach itself has comfortable double and single beach beds, with extra thick mattresses perfect for enjoying a stress free day on the beach, as well as some super and stylish Balinese beds with curtains for a little more privacy. The Hot team, however, were here for the food (Bono is open for lunch and dinner every day during the season and there is a light bite chiringuito style menu with salads, Spanish favourites, wraps, sandwiches and sushi, perfect for enjoying on the beach or at the bar). We started off with an outstanding Salmon Tartare, with guacamole and coriander oil and the Tuna and Avocado Cubes – a simple yet brilliant dish featuring Red Tuna and avocado cubes marinated with soy, honey, chili and seaweed. I sampled this starter last year and liked it so much that I kept a photo of it on my phone! It was just as 88

delicious as I remembered, while both the Tempura King Prawns and Seared Tuna Salad Nicoise that arrived were also polished off with great gusto! The mains were simply superb. The Alaskan Black Cod - white miso marinated, steamed greens with toasted garlic and chili, and black aioli – was a stunning dish with deep flavours while the Lobster Linguine with toasted garlic, cherry tomato, salsa Americana and parsley was equally as good. It’s not just about the fish, however, and the Bono Beach Deluxe Burger with Pesto Mayonnaise crispy bacon, black truffle cheese and fries was easily one of the best we have tasted so far this season. With a few lame complaints that we would all have to get back on the running machine in the morning, the Hot team couldn’t resist Bono Beach’s Key Lime Pie, which had an authentically sharp taste to it, plus a divine Passion Fruit and Vanilla Cheesecake and some rich Belgian waffles with chocolate ice cream. Service throughout was friendly and efficient. We sat back afterwards, looking towards Gibraltar and Africa and reflecting on a brilliant meal in a beautiful setting. It really doesn’t get more perfectly chilled than Bono Beach in summer!

ne of the rare pleasures of Marbella in high summer is dining under the stars. Living here all year round, we can get blasé about just how fabulous enjoying great food in a beautiful setting can be. So if you are feeling that Marbella has lost some of its sparkle, an evening at Oak Garden and Grill will remind you just how lucky we are to live here. Oak Garden and Grill is now firmly established as a “must do” restaurant. Hot reviewed Oak just after it opened and was

blown away by the passion and professionalism of all involved. And, two years later, both those traits are still very much in evidence. Oak Garden and Grill is part of the hugely successful Sala Group. Converted from a private villa next to La Sala, the restaurant features an open wood decked terrace with wooden beams, wonderful olive tree and plenty of climbing plants that give Oak a superb atmosphere, and as you expect, there are a lot of wood and brown shades. Lights hang from the beams and the cork tree in the middle of the terrace and candles on the tables. Soft reggae versions of modern pop songs were playing in the background and to top it all off the restaurant enjoys views across the fields to La Concha. It really is one of the most beautiful settings in Marbella. The kitchen is open plan and features a huge grill that is crucial to the incredible flavours. The base of the grill is first lined with charcoal to ensure that the heat is maintained and that the steak achieves a crisp caramelised exterior with a pink or red centre that can only be achieved by using charcoal. The grill is then covered with aged oak that creates a unique flavour, due to the sugar crystals in the slow burning oak that caramelises in the intense heat. combines with the distinctive smokey fragrance of the wood. We were shown to our table by manager Luke Jessop. To say that Luke is passionate about every aspect of Oak – and I know I am using that word a lot, but no other will do – is the understatement of the year. His knowledge and enthusiasm is infectious and we immediately knew we were in for an outstanding evening. Even the bread that arrived soon after we sat down was beautifully presented. We started with Langoustines and Sea Bass Peruvian Cervice with Mango, Avocado and Tigers Milk, the Norwegian Salmon Tatare marinated with Ponzu Sauce, Ginger, Toasted Sesame Seed, Wakame, Tobico, Wasabi and Sriracha Mayonnaise and a Fresh Burrata with Rocket Salad, Organic Tomatoes and Pesto Dressing. Mains were Chargrilled Fillet Mignon with Half Lobster barbequed with Lemon and Herb Butter, a Brochette of Premium Galician Beef Picaña and, proving that it’s not all about meat, Thai style grilled Sea Bass and Papaya Salad served with Nam Jim Sau. Keen readers will observe that I haven’t described the flavours of each dish individually. This is mainly down to one important reason. Everything and I do mean everything, in every aspect, was superb. No superfluous descriptions are needed. It really is that good! For dessert we chose a tasty soufflé, which Luke informed the table takes a minimum of twelve minutes to perfect, as well as an excellent Chocolate Mousse with Brownie and Pistachio with Orange Sorbet. On the night we dined, there were several tables of wellbehaved children and their parents taking advantage of the early dining options. The next morning, after our magnificent meal, I received an urgent text from Hot’s publisher “Best meal we have had so far this summer,” he wrote, “Presentation, food quality, service, and ambience, all amazing!” I couldn’t have put it better myself…

he Paloma Blanca Boutique Hotel has become somewhat of a Hot favourite ever since we discovered it in March soon after it opened for the summer season. We shot our July fashion shoot here last month, we’ve had many meetings on the terrace and I’ve also been here on a couple of nights out to enjoy the live music, but I’ve not eaten at the restaurant yet, and am eager to find out if the food lives up to the hype. Since beginning its Sunday BBQs, the hotel has also become a popular Sunday spot amongst my friends who have been raving about the food, live music and there’s been much talk about lazy Sunday afternoons in the sunshine on Paloma Blanca’s pretty terrace. The Hot team are greeted by the general manager, Sophia Kazolides who is charming, friendly and welcoming as she ushers us over to a deliciously shady spot. It’s the last week of July and the weather is baking, but as we take our seats a

light breeze floods through the restaurant and courtyard and we are granted a glorious reprieve from the scorching sunshine. Paloma Blanca’s restaurant Dora Maar opens onto the hotel’s central courtyard where holidaymakers are sipping cocktails under parasols and lounging by the swimming pool. Our waiter brings out a colourful concoction of cocktails and we peruse the menu. The Paloma Blanca is a familyrun hotel with decades of experience in the hotel and restaurant business, ever since Sophia’s grandfather Chris Kazolides opened The Red Pepper on the frontline of Puerto Banus back in 1984. The staff are attentive and efficient and we dorder a selection of dishes to share. We begin with a Sharing Platter of Cheeses, Cured Meats, Sundried Tomatoes and Fig and Onion compote. It’s the perfect dish to share with friends over drinks, tapas-style. Next comes a dish of Slow Roast Pork Ribs basted in homemade BBQ sauce served with corn on the cob,

which receives much praise from the publisher — and it’s fair to say that he’s somewhat a rib connoisseur, having sampled the dish in almost every restaurant in town. Next comes a bowl of Sautéed Clams with shallots, white wine and garlic. It’s delicious, light and fresh — epitomising the Mediterranean summer! We share the dishes, comparing our favourites and soon the main courses arrive. A Herb Crusted Fillet of Salmon served on a Chorizo and Bean Casserole is set down before me, the fish is cooked to perfection - fresh and moist and perfectly seasoned. Then comes the North African Spiced 3 Bean Burger with Grilled Halloumi, Roast Pepper, Hummus and Tzatziki, which is a veritable feast — and proof that you don’t need meat to make a burger feel like a decadent and tasty treat. And finally a Seafood platter arrives, with Crispy Fried Squid and Saffron Allioli, Bear battered King Prawns with Red Pepper and Chilli Jam and a light and fresh Mediterranean Seafood Salad — everything is delicious and I’m particularly impressed by the squid, which is exquisite. Desserts are a cracking Carrot Cake served with berries and popping candy and a dish of

Caramelised Banana with Brown Sugar served with ice cream. We share the dishes between us, sampling a little of everything and enjoying the people watching and the cool shade. The atmosphere is so breezy and relaxed that we almost forget we’re working and feel like we’re on holiday too! The menu is perfect. There are tapas and grazing platters for those who just want a snack, there are salads and sandwiches for light lunches and there is of course a full-course menu and the Dora Maar’s famous grill where they serve sirloin, rib-eye or filet steaks with a selection of classic sauces. It’s lively, it’s laid-back and the food is delicious. In fact, the only problem with Paloma Blanca is that you kind of don’t want to leave… But with 74 boutique hotel rooms dotted around the courtyard, you can always stay the night!

Although Global Gift founder Eva Longoria Baston wasn’t there this year, guests included organiser Maria Bravo, Vogue Williams, Spenser Mathews, Gary Dourdan (star of the TV programme CSI) Laura Hamilton, James Arthur and Marbella mayor Angeles Muñoz, while four for Marbella’s top chefs prepared the menu. The “Despacito” singer also received an award for his humanitarian work with children with cancer and the reconstruction of his native Puerto Rico.

you have to arrive early to be able to get a sun-lounger. I love it there as they don’t close early like so many beaches. I don’t understand why they close at 7pm in peak summer – I have left Victors and gone home past midnight every time I go there – the food is fabulous as is the vibe. I also went one evening to Trocadero Arena in Rio Real, which is lovely and doesn’t close early either, making it a great place to watch the sunset with a glass of wine or two or three! I checked out the Festival Arte Sano, a great kind of “hippy market” on the San Pedro Paseo. There were loads of little stalls selling all sorts of things from the most delicious quiche to healthy smoothies, plus yoga on the grass areas as well as a stage teaching people how to dance from salsa to swing music. There were also stalls selling biodegradable products, such as bars of shampoo rather than bottles and wooden products instead of plastics, so all doing their bit for the environment. I managed to get a table at the

new restaurant Occo, which is very difficult as they have a huge waiting list and it didn’t disappoint. The Lebanese cuisine was delicious and the service and the staff were really nice. It has a really opulent feel to it, and they also have a show with dancers. It’s a really cool place. I met the owners and they supplied me with complimentary cocktails, which were amazing, but my God what a hangover the next day! I had a free trial (which anybody can have via their Facebook page) at Osteostrong. It’s a scientific method to increase bone density, strength and balance. It was very interesting and very quick with a few machines measuring different parts of your body by pushing against them. After that you receive a detailed printed report, and once finished, the most amazing massage bed ever for approximately ten minutes. It’s well worth trying it out just for that! And now my usual summer rant regarding taxis. It is an absolute disaster to try and get out on time if I have to rely on the Marbella taxi service. It is all about supply and demand, and through the summer it is impossible. The system is so out of date as there is no option to phone and order one, so I don’t understand why they get so angry with Cabify and Uber as they are unable to meet demand. I have stopped using the normal taxi company for the time being as it just winds me up that they don’t answer the phone!

DREAMERS DREAM BIG!

Ican’t believe the original Dreamers closed in 2011 – that’s seven years ago. It doesn’t feel that long at all. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older or perhaps because all the other clubs that have attempted to take its place just couldn’t live up to the challenge. Let’s face it, whether you like it or not, Dreamers is one of Marbella’s most historically iconic clubs. It took Marbs by storm at the beginning of the millennium, with electronic, house and techno on the decks and parties from dusk ‘til dawn. Reopened in July with a “select” timetable only for significant events, the line-up features some big names in the music industry and tickets are selling like hotcakes. Founder Michael Keijzer had a clear vision for

Dreamers, to always “dream big”. To provide Marbella with a venue that featured the world’s biggest and best DJs. And he certainly lived up to this.
