The Texas Education Agency instituted a new policy for incoming high school ninth graders. They will have different graduation requirements than prior graduates. Some of the new requirements are referred to as clusters. Incoming 9th graders are required to select one of several career clusters, such as STEM or public service. The clusters are a big deal because they determine the elective courses a student will take during high school. Our district hosted an Academic Signing Night at our local middle school for the incoming ninth graders. Students and their parents had an opportunity to select their clusters and speak with the high school counselors.

The Everman High School Key Club volunteered to assist during this momentous event, and it was a huge success. Clubbers did many things, including greeting guests, handing out Everman High School t-shirts, helping the counselors and district staffers, and running the concession stand. There was even a photo booth where students were able to put on a cap and gown and pose in front of a giant bulldog. The free food was a great incentive for people to attend the event. Academic Signing Night was really intense and fast paced for everyone volunteering that evening, especially the concession stands. Kalkidan, the club secretary, and I actually managed to make, wrap, and hand out 400 hot dogs!

The district staff members, teachers, counselors, and administrators really went all out for this event, and it was a definite success. Key Clubbers enjoyed helping out and enjoyed meeting the incoming class of 2020.

“Street Reach” @Beautiful Feet Ministries
Beautiful Feet Ministries is fast becoming the Everman High School Key Club’s favorite community outreach program. This month we were able to participate in “Street Reach” on two different occasions. We were all a little bit apprehensive because we had never done anything of this sort, but we could not help but be excited. “Street Reach” is a Friday night outreach for the homeless population in inner city Fort Worth. The various groups that are volunteering for the evening meet in the Beautiful Feet Sanctuary. We sang a few songs, hear a devotional, and pray before hitting the streets. The project leaders broke us up into groups, some of which were to go to the homeless camps, night shelters, and an assisted living facility. Since the majority of our club is under the age of 18, we were limited to walking the streets and the various homeless camps. We took to Lancaster Avenue, an area in Fort Worth that is known for its high volume of homeless individuals. After loading the van, we were briefed on the basic rules and safety tips we needed to know. We then headed to the area where we would be handing out food. The food we take them depends on donations,; one time we gave out sandwiches and this past time we passed out Chick-Fil-A Meals. We each grabbed food and water bottles and went out looking for people in need. I have personally met some very interesting people whose stories really changed my perspective on life. There was a woman who had gone through almost everything one could imagine. She was used, betrayed, and abandoned. She almost felt the need to kill herself, but she chose to have the strength to live for her young son. I also remember a young man who wanted nothing more but to find work to support his wife and unborn baby. Life was not easy for him, and he could easily have given up at anytime, but he had to be responsible for the people in his life. He needed to support his wife and child and that was what kept him fighting. This reminded me of the saying that tells us that we cannot do it alone. It really helps to have someone by our side and makes everything worth the struggle. There are people who have literally lost everything they have ever cared about and want nothing more than to be able to once again lead a stable life. When we ran out of Chick-Fil-A meals, we began to pass out packages of ramen noodles. One man named Russ, who was born in 1963 in New York, told us he was a veteran and had lost all of his family. Life has not been easy for him, but he acknowledged that he had it better than most out in the streets due to the tent he lived in. When we presented him with the noodles, he looked at us and asked what he should do with them. One of the organizers told him to break the noodles, sprinkle the seasoning on them, and eat them dry. It broke my heart when I heard him say that he had done that in the past and couldn’t bring himself to eat anymore noodles that way.
By the end of the night, many of us were in tears. It was an eye opening experience hearing the stories and the hardships many of the people we met they have faced in their lives. These people are the true survivors because they have gone through so much in life and
they are still fighting to live. Despite whatever mistakes they made in the past and are continuing to make, many are still trying to make a better life for themselves and whatever family they might have. I am thankful to Key Club and Beautiful Feet Ministries for allowing me to hear their stories. I hope many more clubbers join us with “Street Reach” because it was sincerely the best experience of my life. By Miroslava Quintana

Share the Love Valentine’s Day is a day to share and spread love to the individuals you care about. People typically will buy flowers and candies as gifts to present to their significant others and while that is great, Key Club believes Valentine's Day should be about more than ourselves. We believe that the holiday should not be limited to just romantic relationships, but that it should also be a time to show love to those individuals who may not have anyone to share this special day with. Last year, Everman High School’s Key Club made Valentine’s

side at Wedgewood. We decided to return to Wedgewood this year and clubbers once again spent time making cute cards with tons of hearts. We went and presented the cards to the residents, the reaction was very much the same. They loved it! Many of them don’t get a lot of gifts or attention, so receiving something from a complete stranger really brightens up their day. While it may have been a simple gesture, it was a very heartwarm-
ing one for both the Wedgewood residents and our Clubbers.

1 South ADivision Word From our Seniors... Volume 1, Issue 6
Hello Clubbers, This is your historian here and I just wanted to say that as the end of my senior year is looming, I want you each to know that I will miss all of you. I never knew how much fun it was to give back to my community. I hope that you guys will continue on your path of service and never stop giving of your time to those in need. One of the most memorable times of my life is coming to a close, and I have no idea what I will do when I can no longer see you guys. So, what do you all say to making the remainder of this year one of the most memorable times of our lives together? I say, we all go out into the world and show everyone who we are by helping as many people in need as we can.
I hope that each of you will continue to give back to your community and participate in Key Club while in high school. When it is your time to graduate, you will know that you enjoyed every second of high school the way I have. I know that I will continue to give my time to those in need after graduation, and my plan is to try and help out at least one person a week. One person may not be many, but if I can make a difference in that person’s life, then it was all worth it. My challenge is that you guys will do the same.

Hey Guys, It’s your senior representative writing, and I wanted to congratulate each of you for your hard work and the contribution that each of you provided the club. We have managed to stay in the Top 25 for the third consecutive quarter. We must continue working hard and reaching out to our community in the fourth and final quarter. So, even though I congratulate you, we still have some work left ahead of us. It saddens me to say that my term as senior representative is coming to an end. Graduation is fast approaching and many board members and several clubbers will no longer be around. I feel that we are the one of the best clubs in our division. I am so proud of our club that it brings me to tears to see the end so close. Even though I may not be there next year, you will always be in my heart. This group of seniors will continue to work hard with in order to continue build the legacy of our club. We have touched others hearts of many while serving, but even better, they have touched our hearts.
Our club is a huge family that I will always feel a part of and I pray that all of you feel the same. I am proud of you and I love you all. Alfredo Tenorio
