Burleson Kiwanis Pancake Day The Burleson Kiwanis Breakfast takes place the Russell-Boren House which was built in 1887. It is a

rustic and very picturesque slice of Texas. This farm had been passed down through the family over many years. The Russell Farm Art Center is now a place for students and art lovers to expand their knowledge for art. On Saturday, May 14 the Everman High School Key Club joined our sponsoring Kiwanis Club and volunteered to with their annual pancake event.

Eliminate Project The Eliminate Project is a project that joined forces with Kiwanis International and UNICEF to try and eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Now you might ask, “What is maternal and neonatal tetanus?” Sadly it is a very harmful disease that causes the death of newborn children. One newborn child dies every 9 minutes. The mothers happiness of a newborn child can easily turn into a tragedy. Fortunately there is a treatment that can prevent all this chaos. With simply $1.80 you can save the life of a mother and her newborn child. Just three doses of a 60-cent immunization protect mothers, who then pass on the immunity to their future babies. Together, Kiwanis, Eliminate and UNICEF can stop this preventable disease. On Saturday May 27, our Key Club decided we wanted to do our part to help. We met at our advisor’s home in Burleson and went door-to-door in his neighborhood asking people for their donations. We did not have much luck initially. People would shut their doors or some would not even answer. Being strong-willed Key Club members we had faith and kept on knocking. Even though it was legit 100 degrees outside, we still managed to do our best and not go home empty handed. We collected approximately $80 after an hours work. Afterwards we scheduled a social at Mr. Castañeda’s house. We were undecided on what we wanted to eat! Some of us wanted pizza, some wanted burgers, some wanted chicken and none of us could agree on anything. About an hour later we finally decided to go to Cici’s Pizza. Afterwards we returned to Mr. Castañeda’s house and watched a movie in his theater room.

Key Club Pledge I pledge, on my honor, to uphold the Objects of Key Club International; to build my home, school and community; to serve my nation and God; and combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions.

Key Club Mission Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership.

In the end, we all agreed that we had a great day. We felt good knowing that we were making a difference for several mothers and children. We realized that it does not take an Act of Congress to make a difference. All you need is a group of motivated Key Club members who are committed to making a difference!

Pinning Ceremony The school year is officially over and it is time to say goodbye to our seniors. When I first joined Key Club I did not know what I was getting myself into and I no idea what a pinning ceremony entailed. When I attended meetings I saw juniors and seniors and a few freshmen. A few meetings passed and I finally was able to make friends with some of the seniors. They were all very nice and I now had a new “best friend” also known as Denise Clark. She could always bring a smile to my face when I was feeling down. I cannot forget the other seniors: Karina, Olban, Miroslava, Alfredo, Juan. They stuck with our club through thick and thin. On May 6, the Everman High School Key Club had their annual pinning ceremony. It was an unforgettable night. Other than DCON, It was probably one of the days I cried most. Knowing that our Board Meetings and Club Meetings in general would never be the same without these amazing people. It made me realize how special they truly were to our club. Without our graduating seniors, our club would not have accomplished what it did and I am very grateful that they came into our lives. Listening to their goodbye speeches made all of us shed a few tears. Near the end of the ceremony, we had a surprise for Mr. Castañeda. Various club members had purchased him a special award. We ordered a special plaque for being such an amazing advisor. Denise made a poster where club members and staff members thanked Mr. C for his awesome dedication to the Everman High School Key Club. This amazing night will always have a small place in my heart! I absolutely love Key Club!

Words of Wisdom… May 24 was a night to remember: Senior Awards Banquet. Family and friends gathered together to celebrate the accomplishments of their wonderful seniors who would be graduating in less than a week. That special evening made many of our parents just a little sad as they watched their “babies” receive their various awards. This was definitely a sad occasion for me because it getting to this point in my academic was a rough journey. It was also tough because it will be one of the last times that we will be together as seniors before we graduate. I will forever cherish that moment as I stood to receive my Key Club Cord for my service to my community from a man that I honor. I would like to thank Mr. Castañeda and Miss Gallego for being the best advisors ever. Without you two it would be near impossible for this Key Club to continue. I love you guys more than life itself. I know this article was supposed to be about the Senior Awards Banquet, but I couldn't let you guys go unnoticed. We Love You! ~Denise Clark, Everman High School Senior~
