reboot life
Discovering the world on foot is one of life’s great pleasures. From lush mountain ranges and rustic country lanes to shimmering glacial lakes and rugged coastline trails, walking is the perfect way to disconnect from the stresses of daily life and reconnect with nature and yourself.
YOU EXPLORE WE DO THE REST We take care of you every step of the way – and not just the planning and logistics. Every vineyard and viewpoint is researched and vetted, every detour tested to find those worth the effort, we seek out local specialities and perfect picnic spots too. So you can experience the best of a region.
GO AT YOUR OWN PACE Our itineraries allow time to enjoy the moment, to relish at leisure the little things that make all the difference. Stop and smell the flowers, dip your feet in the lake, or sit down in the meadow to sample that tasty freshly-baked treat from the local bakery. There's no great rush – after all, you're on holiday.
ON THE RIGHT TRACK Every one of our routes has been tested by our staff to ensure accuracy – not just that the route directions are spot on, but that the local recommendations along the way are too. Many of our routes also offer GPS navigation. 2+
JUST ENOUGH EFFORT
Each trip will show an activity level. While it’s not possible to be precise about how easy or difficult a trip will be for you personally, our ratings have been carefully designed to give a practical idea as to what you can expect. Check out the activity rating guide on page 57.
i
BY YOURSELF, WITH FRIENDS OR GUIDED
On self-guided holidays, you’re free to do it your way. You take the lead, navigate your route, and decide what you want to see, equipped with a detailed map and directions. We also offer a small selection of guided walking holidays run by experienced local guides who have a wealth of interesting local information.
TASTE THE REGION Our itineraries are designed to showcase each region’s distinct local flavour and charm, especially when it comes to the restaurants we recommend and the beautiful accommodation we handpick. After a day exploring on foot, there’s nothing quite like enjoying the finest local wine and mouthwatering delicacies your region has to offer before unwinding in a comfortable, family-owned hotel for the evening. AUTHENTIC, DELICIOUS, INSPIRING As food-lovers ourselves, we know how important eating well is to our customers, especially after a full day outdoors exploring the region. To ensure you taste the best of what the region has to offer, we select hotels and restaurants whose menus epitomize the local cuisine. Enjoy the culinary delights of the gastronomic restaurant on offer in Gevrey Chambertin on our Burgundy walking trips. Or take advantage of the Ciasa Salares four restaurants on our Walking the Dolomites of Alta Badia holiday and indulge in a chocolate experience, a cheese room evening or fine dine in the ‘bottle cork’ cellar restaurant (as shown above) amongst 1900 labels, 24,000 bottles from every corner of the world, making this a wine connoisseur’s dream experience. No matter where you choose to travel, we ensure your food is always served in spectacular surroundings.
QUALITY& CHARACTER We’ve been researching and sourcing the finest, friendliest and most charming hotels since 1985, looking out for small, family-owned accommodations that serve authentic regional cuisine, and who take a genuine interest in their guests. The hotels can vary enormously from ‘agriturismo’ properties in Italy to castles in Spain, reflecting the differing tastes and styles of their owners and the region. Below we feature two of the special places we’ve discovered.
RELAIS VILLA D’AMELIA, PIEDMONT, ITALY
Relaxed sophistication, Michelin star food in stunning surroundings Officially a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, this is a luxuriously restored 19th-century family villa just outside Benevello in Italy’s stunning Piedmont region. The hotel sits on the ridge of a hill between woodland and hazelnut groves offering breathtaking views of the Alps. The bar and lounge area, with an oak-beamed ceiling, oriental carpets, grand piano and leather sofas – is a perfect place for relaxing, reading or sipping a glass of delicious local wine. See page 33
CASTELL D'EMPORDA, CATALONIA, SPAIN
Contemporary fine dining and breathtaking views
Perched on a rocky outcrop between the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava’s cliffs and coves, Castell d’Emporda is a superbly restored 700-year old castle. Owners Albert and Margo are both very friendly and speak excellent English. Each of the hotel’s comfortable and stylish rooms has been individually decorated with furniture collected by the owners on their travels around China, India and Morocco. See page 41

KEY BOOKING INFORMATION BELOW IS SOME INFORMATION THAT YOU MAY FIND USEFUL IN RELATION TO YOUR BOOKING AND HOLIDAY. FULL TERMS AND CONDITIONS CAN BE FOUND AT: WWW.HEADWATER.COM/BOOKING-CONDITIONS 1. REFER TO OUR WEBSITE Our website features the most up-to-date details for all our holidays. Should there be a discrepancy between the information in the brochure and the website, the information on the website will be considered the most up-to-date and accurate.
2. ABOUT THE HOLIDAY IS THIS HOLIDAY FOR YOU? All customers are expected to satisfy themselves prior to booking that they are fit and able to complete the itinerary of their chosen holiday as described in the brochure and on our websites. All our holidays feature Activity Level icons as guides to the level of challenge the holiday will involve. An explanation of each Activity Level can be found at headwater.com/cycling-ratings and headwater.com/walking-ratings. Please let your sales consultant know during the booking process if you have concerns and queries about any aspects of the itinerary. PARTICIPATION On a guided group holiday it is necessary that you abide by the authority of the tour leader, who represents the Company. The tour leader is not an employee of the Company, however they are appointed by the Company to guide your holiday. If you commit any illegal act when on the holiday or if in the reasonable opinion of the tour leader or another person in authority your behaviour is disruptive, threatening or abusive, causes unnecessary inconvenience or is causing or likely to cause damage to property, danger, distress or upset, disturbance or annoyance to others or puts any traveller or our staff or agents in the UK or resort in any risk or danger, on the telephone, in writing or in person, we may terminate your travel arrangements without any liability on our part. PRE-EXISTING MEDICAL CONDITIONS We ask you to let us know of any pre-existing conditions, illnesses, disabilities or recent surgeries that may affect your safety or other people’s enjoyment of the holiday. Please email sales@headwater.com to make us aware of any pre-existing medical conditions. There is no upper age limit on our tours, but as most holidays are quite active we may ask clients over the age of 80 a number of questions about their health and fitness. We also require you to advise us of any dietary requirements in advance of a tour. ACCOMMODATION Our prices include accommodation based on two adults sharing a twin or double room with en-suite facilities. Please speak to a sales consultant if you would like to enquire about a single room and associated additional supplements.

3. BOOKING ON A FLIGHT INCLUSIVE OR LAND ONLY BASIS Headwater holidays can be booked on a Land Only basis or with flights included. When booking on a Flight Inclusive basis, Headwater complies with our responsibilities under the ATOL regime. For all packages (Flight Inclusive or not) we comply with the Package Travel and Linked Travel Regulations 2018. In the event of a significant change to travel plans by an airline, we are responsible for ensuring that you can complete your journeys in a reasonable timeframe and without additional cost to yourself. Details of your rights under the Package Travel Regulations can be found at headwater.com/key-rights FLIGHT COSTS AND SUPPLEMENTS Flight Inclusive prices include return flights from a London airport and UK departure tax. Our Flight Inclusive holiday prices include a base price for the flights, however this is always subject to availability at the time of booking as airfares are outside of our control. Where the cost of flights is higher than this base price, a flight supplement may be applicable; your sales consultant will be able to advise you if this is the case. We can often arrange flights from regional airports too; your sales consultant will be able to advise you if this is the case. TRANSFERS If you are travelling on the designated flights, return airport transfers will be included at the destination. If you are not travelling on designated flights, airport transfers may be at an additional cost unless shown in your documentation as a free or included transfer; please ask your sales consultant for transfer details during the booking process. If you book on a Land Only basis, services start and end at the local joining point detailed in your documentation.
4. HOW TO BOOK If you would like to make a booking you can contact us in several ways: directly over the telephone (01606 828515), by email at sales@headwater.com, via our website www.headwater.com and the Live Chat function on our website, or through an approved travel agent. TRAVEL INSURANCE It is an essential condition of joining a Headwater holiday that you have an adequate and valid travel insurance policy for the full duration of your holiday to cover the cost of medical treatment, cancellation and curtailment, and the activities included in the holiday (including the maximum altitude reached). We recommend that you take out insurance as soon as your booking is confirmed.
5. PAYMENT, CANCELLATIONS AND CHANGES
KEY INFORMATION TO HELP YOU PREPARE Important holiday documentation will be provided during the booking process and prior to your holiday. If you have any queries or notice any inaccuracies, please contact Headwater as soon as possible. We are able to provide basic advice to clients regarding passports and visa requirements, but you should check with the appropriate embassy, consulate or the British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office for the exact requirements for your chosen tour and date of travel. British nationals require a full passport that is valid for six months after the date of your scheduled return home. At the time of printing, no compulsory vaccinations were required for any of the holidays we feature, however we recommend you to check with your doctor about any inoculations required. European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) may not be valid from 1 January 2021. Please ensure you take out travel insurance that covers your needs. Visit GOV.UK (link below) to check what your travel insurance should cover. https://www.gov.uk/ visit-europe-1-january-2021?.
Unless stated otherwise during the booking process or in the full terms and conditions, the following applies:
RISKS OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL Whilst we ensure that all activities are operated to the local legal standard and that risk assessments are carried out annually, many of our holidays do carry an element of risk. We require that all the properties and transport we use comply fully with local regulations, but we do not guarantee the same standards as in your home country. If you choose to travel on this type of holiday, you must be prepared to accept that this is all part of the experience. Outdoor activities are weather dependent to an extent and some can become dangerous in certain conditions. We will take all reasonable care of you and expect that you will take sensible precautions yourself.
MAKING CHANGES TO YOUR HOLIDAY Please contact Headwater as soon possible if you wish to make a change to your existing booking, wish to change to a different tour or wish to change departure date. We will always endeavour to assist with the requested change, but this is subject to availability and payment may need to be made for non-refundable costs (for example from airlines) and other fees may also be applicable.
DEPOSIT You will be asked to pay a deposit at the time of booking of at least £250 per person. You will be advised of your deposit at the time the booking is made and/or confirmed. You may also be required to pay on booking for any non-transferable and non-refundable items; your sales consultant will advise you of this during the booking process. Please note that for certain travel arrangements the deposit may be higher than those shown. FINAL BALANCE We will invoice you for the remainder of the cost of your holiday, which must be paid prior to 70 days before departure. In certain cases, we may request full payment more than 70 days before departure where, for example, airlines require full payment on booking.
CANCELLATION CONDITIONS You may cancel your tour at any time by providing written communication from the lead booker. As we start to incur costs from the time the contract is confirmed we will retain your deposit and will apply other cancellation charges as shown below.
Please note, however, that for certain travel arrangements, the cancellation charge may be higher than those shown; please ask your sales consultant for full details of cancellation charges at time of booking. Period before a departure when notice of cancellation is received

6. OUR CONTRACT WITH YOU As a Headwater customer you may have rights under the Package Travel and Linked Travel Regulations 2018 where your booking amounts to a package holiday. These are detailed here: headwater.com/key-rights. Full terms and conditions apply to your booking and can be found here: headwater.com/booking-conditions. This link also includes information on our Privacy Policy and our Data Protection Commitment. IF WE CHANGE OR CANCEL YOUR BOOKING We plan the arrangements for your tour many months in advance and may occasionally have to make changes, most of which are minor. WHEN A MAJOR CHANGE (AS OUTLINED IN THE FULL TERMS AND CONDITIONS ON OUR WEBSITE) OCCURS, YOU WILL HAVE THE CHOICE OF EITHER: a) Accepting the change; or b) Accepting a replacement tour from us of equivalent or similar standard and price (at the date of the change), if we are able to offer you one; or c) Cancelling your tour, in which case you shall receive a full refund of all monies paid. Some of our holidays are group holidays and require a certain number of participants to operate; we include details of normal group sizes on our website. In the unlikely event that a holiday does not reach the normal minimum, we may be forced to cancel the tour; a decision will be made as early as possible and not later than four weeks before departure. We reserve the right to confirm holidays on numbers lower than the minimum indicated and occasionally we may exceed the normal maximum. If at the time of booking your holiday is not guaranteed, we strongly recommend that you do not make any non-refundable or nonchangeable travel arrangements.

CHALLENGING
Suitable for anyone who is reasonably fit and healthy, enjoys the occasional weekend walk and can walk for 2-5 hours on any given day. Trails are seldom totally flat so you should be prepared for gentle ascents and descents but a head for heights is not necessary.
Suitable for anyone looking for walks of 4-6 hours and confident with daily ascents/descents of up to 700m. You don’t need specific walking experience; however, good health and reasonable fitness are important. There may be some sections on uneven terrain where scrambling is required. A head for heights may be required on some routes.
Fitness is important as you can expect to be walking for over 5 hours a day (5-8 hrs for level 3, 6-8 hrs for level 4) including ascents/descents of up to 1,000m for level 3, and up to 1,200m for level 4 walks. High altitudes, climate and remoteness can also be factors depending on your chosen destination. Compass reading skills and experience of walking in mountains is important, and you should have a reasonable head for heights. There is likely to be some scrambling required, although not rock climbing. Not suitable for under-12s.
Gentle cross-country skiing and winter activities suitable for relative beginners. Skiing is mostly on well prepared tracks.
Suitable for more experienced skiers with a good level of fitness. Routes will include more ascents and descents and may include sections through virgin snow. Customers should have controlled technique and ability to get up swiftly and easily after a fall.
These are more demanding trips that require a high level of fitness and good technique. Routes may include high snowy peaks, long ascents and faster paced sections. Suitable for experienced skiers only.
These trips have some small sections of the route that are more challenging than the overall grading.
HEADWATER TRAVEL INSURANCE POLICY Travel Insurance is an important part of any booking. ESSENTIAL INFORMATION WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TRAVELLING WITH HEADWATER
Our aim is to provide holidays that are unbeatable for choice and flexibility. On the trip pages we feature ‘land only’ itineraries but we can book your flights, ferry or train tickets and add on any city breaks or extra nights’ accommodation to create your perfect holiday.
CUSTOMER SATISFACTION RATINGS
HOLIDAY ITINERARIES
Customer satisfaction ratings shown on the individual holiday pages relate to holidays taken in the period October 2019 - September 2020 but may include holidays prior to this period.
Please note that the itineraries shown on the holiday pages are for general guidance only, and we reserve the right to change these subject to local weather conditions etc.
CYCLE HELMETS
IMAGES
ACCOMMODATION
The latest requirements for wearing cycling helmets in the European countries stated are:
The images shown in this brochure and on our website are for illustrative purposes only.
All accommodation detailed in this brochure has been inspected and classified by the authorities of the relevant countries. As there is no direct British equivalent of many classifications, the broad expression ‘hotels’ refers to all the different types of accommodation we use, from friendly family-run B&B and country inns to luxury hotels (where is the country’s official hotel rating). The H symbol indicates the level of comfort for all accommodation not falling within the country’s official rating system and has been assessed by us in a similar way to the star system used by the AA within the UK. These accommodations are usually officially licensed, extremely popular with customers and very much part of the country way of life. Our prices include accommodation based on two adults sharing a twin or double room with en-suite facilities. PLEASE NOTE: In Europe when requesting a room for three people either a double or twin room with an extra bed is often provided, which may be cramped. • Single rooms (even if you’ve paid a supplement) sometimes just offer privacy, and are often of a lower standard than doubles or twins. • When requesting a room with twin beds in Austria, Croatia, Germany or Switzerland a double bed frame with two single mattresses and separate bedding are the norm. • Some facilities, including swimming pools may not be available for early and late season holidays and the reduced prices shown on our website reflect this. • Any special children’s facilities are generally only available during school holidays. Please see our website (using the link at the bottom of the individual trip pages) for full details of the accommodation on each trip.

All prices quoted in the brochure are in GBP. Lead prices shown are ‘land only’ (i.e. exclude flights) and include accommodation based on two adults sharing a room with en suite facilities. Prices are correct at time of going to press but should be treated as a guide only.
In countries where wearing a cycling helmet is mandatory (see above) you are expected to bring your own helmet as we cannot guarantee the availability of helmets for hire or purchase at your destination. If you decide to hire or purchase a helmet at your destination the choice of helmet and its suitability are at your discretion and Headwater will not be responsible for any issues or problems with helmets or other protective headwear. Note that if you do not have a helmet in countries where it is mandatory, you will not be allowed to take part in any cycling element, which may mean that you are not able to continue with the tour and Headwater will not be responsible for any costs you incur as a result.
To help you choose a holiday that best suits your level of fitness, all our holidays are given an activity level rating, see page 57 for more details.
Even in countries where cycling helmets are not a legal requirement, we strongly recommend that all customers wear helmets while on one of our cycling tours. You are expected to bring your own helmet as we cannot guarantee the availability of helmets for hire or purchase at your destination. If you do decide to hire or purchase a helmet at your destination the choice of helmet and its suitability are at your discretion and Headwater will not be responsible for any issues or problems with helmets or other protective headwear. If you choose to ignore our advice to wear a helmet or other protective headwear you understand that you do so at your own risk and that such action may affect the validity of your travel insurance. Cycling of all kinds has its dangers and accidents can happen from time to time. Please ensure that you are properly prepared for the riding you are going to undertake.
