ROMAN THEATRE OF REGINA Casas De Reina EVERY BODY ON STAGE! It is the most representative building of the ancient Roman city of Regina Turdulorum. The city was founded in the first century. Thanks to its restoration we can appreciate the main original elements and its capacity, one thousand spectators, proof of it’s great importance in the Iberian Peninsula.
ROMAN THEATRE OF MEDELLIN If the stones could talk
Metellinum was an important Roman colony, proof of this is its magnificent theatre dating back to the end of the 1st century BC. It is in an excellent state of conservation, especially the steps, with up to 800 granite ashlars, and the exposed columns we can see are the originals.
To learn more about the past of the interesting city of Medellín, you can visit the Church of Santiago, the archaeological park’s interpretation centre, It’s also host to Mérida International Classical Festival Theatre, whose programme you can enjoy during the summer months.
In the summer it has a classical theatre programme and it’s also host to Mérida International Classical Theatre Festival. www.turismoextremadura.com/es/explora/Ciudad-Romana-de-Regina/

ARCH OF CÁPARRA Oliva de Plasencia Crossroads This four-sided quadriphon arch is unique in Spain. It was located in the centre of the Roman city of Capera, today Caparra, a city of great mercantile importance due to its location on the Vía de la Plata (Silver Route). The arch was surrounded by the main monuments, such as the baths, whose remains can still be seen today.
ROMAN THERMAL BATHS Alange Well-being in a World Heritage Site
This health and relaxation spa complex in honour of the goddess Juno was founded by the Romans in the 3rd century. Currently, you can enjoy both the spa and these Roman vestiges, such as the two circular domeroofed baths, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The properties of its mineralmedicinal waters are unique, and these Roman baths combine traditional therapies with the latest trends in wellness and hydrotherapy.
Thanks to the inscriptions on the arch we know that it was built at the end of the first century by Fidius Macer, to fulfil the wishes of his parents. www.turismoextremadura.com/es/explora/Ciudad-romana-de-Caparra/

BASÍLICA SANTA LUCÍA DEL TRAMPAL Alcuéscar Visigothic jewel It is the only Visigothic church to be preserved in the Iberian Peninsula. It is very close to the Trampal spring, at the foot of the Sierra del Centinela. It was built around the second third of the 7th century and was part of a convent of Templar monks.
MONASTERY OF TENTUDÍA Calera de León Traces of the Order of Santiago
Legend has it that in the 13th century, during a battle against the Arabs, Captain Pelay Pérez Correa implored the Virgin: “Holy Mary, stop your day!”. The miracle took place and in gratitude he had this chapel built dedicated to Santa María de Tudía (Tentudía). Located in Calera de León, it was the headquarters of the Military Order of Santiago.
In the middle of the 16th century a Language Faculty (humanities) was created in the monastery, which was in operation until the beginning of the 19th century.
In the surrounding area, goat-shaped votive offerings have been found, representing the Celtic goddess Ataecina, protector of the forest and waters, whose Roman equivalent was Proserpina. www.turismoextremadura.com/es/explora/Basilica-visigoda-de-Santa-Lucia-del-Trampal/

CHURCH OF SAN NICOLÁS Plasencia Romanesque and gothic architecture The Church of San Nicolás is located in one of the most beautiful corners of the historic centre of Plasencia. Built in the 13th century, it was one of the first churches in the city. With an initial late Romanesque style, its continuous remodelling gave it a Gothic appearance, although it preserves outstanding Romanesque elements such as the bell tower, the southern and northern portals and a beautiful baptismal font.
CASTLE OF BELVÍS DE MONROY The great fortress
Located to the northeast of Cáceres, construction began in the 13th century during the Reconquest at the behest of King Sancho IV. It brings together successive architectural styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Plateresque, Renaissance and Baroque. What remains of it can give us a sample of the magnificent fortress that must have been been in the past.
This castle endured the constant battles between two families in the area, the Monroys and the Belvises, who ended up marrying their children together to put an end to the disputes.
This church’s northern portal was designated by the city’s fuero as the venue for hearing disputes among Jews, Muslims and Christians.

GRANADILLA Zarza de Granadilla
FERIA CASTLE South watchtower
An immortal medieval town
From Feria’s Castle emerges its impressive keep, a magnificent example of military Gothic architecture. It has four floors, where the first corresponds to the quarters for the lords of the castle, two more for other uses, finishing with a terrace that offers privileged views of the region of Zafra - Rio Bodion.
The walled town of Granadilla, founded in the ninth century by the Muslims, was vacated in the 1960s to build the nearby Gabriel y Galán reservoir. It is currently undergoing rehabilitation to regain its splendour. The spanish film director, Pedro Almodóvar used it as the setting for his film ¡Átame!
From its castle you can enjoy wonderful views, especially at sunset. The town has visiting hours, so check the opening times before your visit.
The castle is accessed through the homage courtyard, walking along the wall, you can then enter the tower that houses the Señorío de Feria Interpretation Centre. www.turismoextremadura.com/es/explora/Castillo-de-Feria/

EL PALANCAR CONVENT Pedroso de Acim The smallest in the world “El Conventico”, as it is known, was founded by Fray Pedro de Alcántara in the 16th century. A friar of humble character, he ordered the construction of a room, dominated by austerity, with the right dimensions to be able to carry out monastic life. Its founder, who was 6’2” tall slept sitting with his head rested against a small log on the wall.
ERMITA DEL ARA Fuente del Arco The Sistine Chapel of Extremadura
It is one of the most symbolic constructions of the Mudejar style in lower Extremadura and dates back to the end of the 14th century. Twentysix scenes from the book of Genesis unfold in the vault of the sanctuary. From the outside, the beautiful Mudejar arches and the two-section bell tower stand out from which to contemplate the Sierra de San Miguel, the Sierra del Viento and the banks of the Ara.
The base is decorated with geometric figures possibly painted with minerals from the nearby Jayona Mine.
Currently El Palancar’s Convent has become a place of meditation, pilgrimage and retreat. www.turismoextremadura.com/es/explora/Convento-El-Palancar/

CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA MAGDALENA Olivenza Manuelino style in its purest form A beautiful jewel of the Portuguese Manueline style built in the 16th century as a temple and residence for the Bishops of Ceuta. Its false battlements, pinnacles, gargoyles and the powerful columns turned into thick ship ropes, an impressive altarpiece, and its naturalistic decoration and historic tiles are striking.
CRISTO DE LA VICTORIA Serradilla Baroque devotion
Life-size image carved in 1630 by the image maker Domingo de Rioja that can be found on the main altarpiece of the church. Miraculous powers are attributed to him and thousands are the pilgrims who come to visit El Cristo de Serradilla. The temple that bears his name is Baroque and of great beauty. It is located in the heart of MonfragĂźe National Park.
The monastery of Cristo de la Victoria houses one of the most important pictorial collections of the 16th and 17th centuries in the country.

ROMAN RUINS OF AUGUSTÓBRIGA Bohonal de Ibor The Roman portico
Augustóbriga was a Roman Municipium located on the banks of the Tagus River. It went on through to medieval times with the name of Talavera la Vieja, still preserving traces of the Roman era. In the 20th century, after the construction of the Valdecañas Reservoir, the town was flooded and a portico of the temple called Los Mármoles and some columns of the temple called La Cilla were rescued.
Los Marmoles is named after the Stucco coating with pieces of glass that covered the grooves on the column shafts.
From 1494 to 1791, every 3rd of May, it was publicly displayed before the many pilgrims who came with faith to the city of Coria. This movement deteriorated the relic and it was decided to keep it in the cathedral, leading to a fall in its worship and it fell into disuse and obscurity. www.turismoextremadura.com/es/explora/Mantel-sagrado-de-Coria/

CASTLE OF TREVEJO Trevejo The lookout of the Sierra de Gata This castle is located in the district of Trevejo belonging to Villamiel. Throughout its history it played a very important role in controlling the valleys of the western part of Sierra de Gata until the War of Independence against the French, who destroyed it due to its great strategic value, thus preventing it from becoming a place of refuge for guerrillas.
CASTLE OF MIRABEL Mirabel A castle of legend
The Castle of Mirabel sits on Peña de Acero and was part of the defensive system that existed in the Middle Ages around the Tagus River. A great legend from the time of the Reconquest revolves around this castle, that of ‘‘Los 13 Panes’, which by luck or by providence managed to get the Christians, who were besieged in the castle by Almohad troops, to withdraw without a fight.
The castle can be visited and has information panels.
Due to the low light pollution, Trevejo and its castle have become an ideal place for stargazing. www.turismoextremadura.com/es/explora/Castillo-de-Trevejo/

PLAZA MAYOR Garrovillas de Alconétar The arcaded square Garrovillas de Alconétar’s Plaza Mayor is an architectural complex considered the best example of late medieval rural architecture in Extremadura. Listed as one of the most beautiful in Spain and among the 12 largest in the country, with its 4000 m2, it is made up of a set of houses with porches and windows in semicircular arches.
LA TORRE DEL ALFILER Trujillo Guardian of history
Torre del Alfiler is one of the most characteristic buildings of the monumental picture of Trujillo. Built with Roman ashlars, it was a defensive part of the Muslim town and converted, in the 16th century, into the homage tower of the Chaves-Cárdenas palace, which still shows the chain above its door, a symbol of having had the honour of hosting the king Felipe II.
Its name is due to the fact that it has a metal rod nailed to the dome that covers the plane where the battlement was, which was removed by order of Queen Isabel La Católica. Inside is Trujillo’s History Interpretation Centre.
Located in the same square, is the Palace of the Dukes of Alba de Liste, now converted to a hotel belonging to the hotel chain Red de Hospederias de Extremadura, hotels run by Extremadura’s Government. www.turismoextremadura.com/es/explora/Plaza-porticada-de-Garrovillas-de-Alconetar

CASTLE LUNA Alburquerque
CASTLE OF LA PUEBLA DE ALCOCER Puebla de Alcocer
Rayan fortress
The great viewpoint
Luna’s Castle is one of the most important and best preserved medieval fortresses in the Iberian Peninsula. Small in size but of great strategic value due to its location near the border with Portugal, it has four defensive enclosures that make it virtually impregnable. The imposing keep and the Villa Adentro or medieval Jewish quarter are most noteworthy.
It was in the 15th century when Puebla de Alcocer was declared a town and given to Don Gutierre de Sotomayor, Master of the Order of Alcantara, who built this castle on the remains of another existing fortress. It has a strong, closed and compact character provided by its high and thick walls and the great height of the Torre del Homenaje built with a cylindrical shape stands out.
The views from the Torre del Homenaje are spectacular, offering a wonderful view of the Valley of La Serena, with its reservoir of the same name, and the plains of La Siberia.
It is named after Don Alvaro de Luna, Master of the Order of Santiago and Constable of Castile who, between 1445 and 1453, undertook the construction of some of the most important elements of the castle. www.turismoextremadura.com/es/explora/Castillo-de-Alburquerque/

PÓSITO DE HORNACHOS Hornachos Refuge from the Moorish culture Hornachos was the last Moorish stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula until the expulsion decree signed by Felipe II in 1610 was formalised. One of the most emblematic buildings in Hornachos, El Pósito, dates from the Mudejar period. It is an old repository built between the two valleys that have marked the history of the municipality; that of the Moors and that of the Christians.
CONVENT OF SAN BENITO Alcántara Centre of monastic wisdom
This building, promoted in the 16th century by the Catholic Monarchs to house the Order of Alcántara, is one of the most beautiful convents in Extremadura. Learn the story of how the French, during the Napoleonic invasions, acquired a book that accumulated all the culinary knowledge of the monks of Alcántara and whose recipes were introduced into French cuisine and used by the best master chefs of the neighbouring country.
It was declared a National Monument in 1914. At present, the Alcántara Classical Theatre Festival is held on this site.
This building currently houses the Moorish Culture Interpretation Centre, whose purpose is to reflect on the history of these Spanish Muslims who were expelled from the country. www.turismoextremadura.com/es/explora/El-Posito-de-Hornachos

DOLMEN DE LÁCARA La Nava de Santiago Prehistoric jewel
Located in a wonderful oak woodland, this dolmen is a megalithic burial monument, a collective corridor-type tomb dating from the late Neolithic period (4000- 3000 BC). It has surprising dimensions and is considered one of the largest and best preserved in the Iberian Peninsula. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931.
In spite of the despoilment suffered since its construction, this dolmen is in a very good state of conservation and during your visit you can sense the majesty that it once had.
