Feeling hot, hot, hot!

Itrust that you had a splendid time celebrating Eid al-Adha with your loved ones. Some of us are still enjoying an extended holiday – for us, that came at a cost – we had to work twice as fast to get this summer issue out. But we’re not complaining. It’s something we love to do – offering you, our lovely readers, interesting reads and the scoop on what’s on in Bahrain. With the mercury rising, the island comes alive this time of the year, with a wide range of exciting things to see and do. Our main story this month features interesting activities and offers, from poolside pleasures and beachy fun to rejuvenating spa treatments, summer camps for the kids and more. If you’re tying the knot soon, don’t miss out on the summer-wedding offers.

The hotter months bring with them a different culinary trend of poolside brunches, mocktails on the beach and other such. In this issue, you’ll find a collection of irresistible seasonal eats, from relaxed afternoon teas to barbecues and more. Speaking of food, FACT reviewed some amazing restaurants and we tell you all about our experience – newly opened hotspots and, for those who prefer to stay indoors, gourmet-style takeout.

My colleagues had the chance to escape to paradise and experience the brandnew Avani+ Fares Maldives Resort – wait until you see it – it’s stunning! We have an extensive motoring section, featuring classy rides that are sure to tempt you to make your next purchase.

FINE DINING AND FLAVOURS

After successful international expansions in Dubai, Doha, Cannes, Istanbul and, most recently, Egypt’s North Coast, Scalini has opened in Bahrain, in association with Sevens Holding, the fastest growing luxury hospitality company in the GCC region. The restaurant is located at the five-star, Royal Saray Resort in Seef District.

Established in London in 1988, Scalini has more than 30 years of history and is known for its tradition, quality and culinary heritage. Mediterranean-inspired décor in shades of blue mirrors the seas around the Italian coastline, whilst warm citrus yellow and lush greens evoke the mood of a stylish Amalfi Coast trattoria. Restaurant Manager, Fabrizio Greco said: “We put our dreams and visions of the perfect Scalini into this wonderful location. The people in Bahrain and Saudi love to dine out, and with many international F&B (food and beverage) brands now successfully opening here, we can clearly see that the country presents the ideal location and opportunity for Scalini’s expansion.

“Our clientele is extremely discerning and detail-oriented. From the moment they enter the restaurant, their expectations of the dining experience are very high, which is testament to Scalini’s impeccable brand reputation. This is a very good motivator for us,

ensuring we are always striving for perfection and the highest of standards of food, service and atmosphere.”

Scalini offers lovingly prepared, traditional Italian cuisine packed with flavour, served in a relaxed, welcoming environment, complemented by a bar menu that pays homage to Mediterranean flavours. Signature dishes such as Tagliolini Al Tartufo Nero, Tagliolini pasta with parmesan cheese and shaved black truffle, served in an exquisite grana padano wheel, followed by Scalini’s famous Bombolini Ala Nutela, with refreshing mocktails, offer the perfect menu choice for balmy summer nights.

With a contemporary mix of colourful and playful artwork, Scalini Bahrain delivers a southern Italian summertime vibe; the perfect destination for sophisticated Italian aperitivos and an exquisite fine-dining experience in the heart of Bahrain. Scalini Bahrain is open from 6pm to 12am on weekdays and 6pm to 1am on weekends. Lunch is available on Fridays and Saturdays from 12.30pm to 4pm. ✤

PREPARE FOR ‘VIRTUAL INSANITY’

Jamiroquai – the famed funk and acid jazz band from London – are coming to Bahrain.

Get ready for an incredible night of fantastic funk and soul extravagance performed by the legendary Jamiroquai. The event is set to take place on August 18 at Exhibition World Bahrain. Founded in 1992 by frontman Jay Kay (aka the Buffalo Man, aka The Cat in the Hat), Jamiroquai were a prominent component of the London-based funk/jazz movement of the 1990s.

The band’s full-length debut, Emergency on Planet Earth, was released in 1993 and quickly became a major hit in their native, England, peaking at number one on the charts. The album also generated Top Ten hit singles such as Too Young to Die and Blow Your Mind.

The band has since released several successful albums such as The Return of the Space Cowboy (1994), Synkronized (1999), A Funk Odyssey (2001), among others. Their most recent studio album, Automaton was released in 2017.

Over the years, Jamiroquai have consistently built on their acid jazz sound from their early releases and later added a myriad of influences such as rock, disco, electronic and Latin music, amongst

many other genres to enhance their sound. Lyrically, the group has addressed social and environmental themes and subjects.

The band has experienced global success in the form of more than 27 million album sales, multiple music awards, a Grammy Award and numerous sold-out world tours. Frontman Jay Kay has remained as the only original member through several lineup changes. Their third album, Travelling Without Moving (1996), received a Guinness World Record as the best-selling funk album in history. The music video for its lead single, Virtual Insanity, was a global sensation with Jay Kay dancing on a conveyor-belted floor, dodging sofas and defying gravity. The song was named Video of the Year at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards and earned the band a Grammy in 1998.✤

LUXURY MEETS SPORTINESS

True to its M badge, the all-new BMW XM combines high performance with driver-oriented technology.

ISLAND RIDES •

BMW M GmbH have released their much anticipated, all-new BMW XM. This is the brand's first BMW M original since the BMW M1, unveiled in the late '70s, and their first ever high-performance car with an electrified drive system.

FACT spent an unforgettable day in this novel creation, thanks to the helpful team at Euro Motors.

Exterior

The moment we laid eyes on the new XM, we were taken by its bold shape and unique design elements. At the front, the large kidney grille features horizontal slats surrounded by an ambient lighting feature and gold trim. This visually expressive front end houses two headlight units, typical of BMW's luxury segment models. Hinting at the sporty prowess of the vehicle are large air intakes located at each side of the front bumper. The distinctive lines of the XM continue at the flanks, underscored by the gold trim running from bonnet to boot, a feature that pays tribute to the original M1. We loved the shape of the competitionstyle side-view mirrors, along with the M-specific wheels that come complete with weighted centrepieces. This ensures the BMW logos remain the right way up, even when the car is in motion. At the rear, the vertically stacked dual exhaust system is neatly integrated into the rear apron. The LED taillights include a threegill lighting feature and flicker like a fire when on. Finishing off the exterior in style are the prominent diffuser, adaptive dampers, limited-slip rear differential and the now familiar gold trimming.

Interior

Entering the XM, we were welcomed by comfortable and supportive multi-adjustable sports seats with illuminated XMembossed logos on the headrests. The interior's exceptional blend of luxury and sportiness is combined with a solid build quality and houses a driver-orientated cockpit.

The interior roof features a prism-style design that lights up when the car is opened, as does the ambient lighting located under the interior door handles, the various air vents and the front speakers of the Harman Kardon surround sound system. All lighting turns red when the Sport mode is engaged. A sports steering wheel with carbon fibre panels, aluminium pedals and M-trim seat belts are all included in the cabin.

The rear offers plenty of head, shoulder and leg room for three adults to travel comfortably, with plenty of storage options, numerous USB ports and dual-zone climate control.

The 527-litre storage capacity of the luggage compartment can be greatly increased with the rear seats folded down, making the XM practical for everyday family usage. This area also features a 12V socket, along with a designer bag holding the hybrid charging cables.

Infotainment & Technology

The BMW XM is equipped with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, delivering the M-specific multi-sensory vehicle experience, iDrive. This system operates through a large BMW Curved Display consisting of a 12.3-inch information display (diagonal) and a 14.9-inch control display.

We found this easy-to-navigate operating system very responsive and exceptionally helpful in negotiating the numerous options. A state-of-the-art Head-Up display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also fitted as standard.

Performance & Safety

Press the start button on the new XM, and a distinct sound composed by the critically acclaimed Hans Zimmer (composer and music producer) is what you'll hear. He had a hand in creating the soundtrack for this outstanding SUV.

The XM's engine is a classically high-revving 4.4-litre V8 with cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology. Combined with an electric motor and an eight-speed automatic gearbox with torque convertor, this effective combination offers three operating modes and a full-time, four-wheel drive experience.

The M HYBRID drive system of the XM delivers an overall combined output of 653hp. The SUV accelerates from 0-100km/h in a mere 4.3 seconds and has an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h.

We found the drive quality and responsiveness of the vehicle to be nothing less than exceptional, especially in Sport mode. Fortunately, the designers have included a high-performance braking system capable of taming the abundance of power.

The M Hybrid button on the centre console is used to select one of three operating modes: HYBRID, ELECTRIC and eCONTROL.

The eco-friendly ELECTRIC setting allows cruising with zero local emissions at speeds up to 140km/h and over a maximum distance of 82 to 88km.

BMW have fitted a full suite of driver assistance features as standard including Front Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Evasion Assistant, Alertness Assist and a Speed Limit Info System. Additional advanced features are available as optional extras.

A SUPERIOR SPORTS CAR

FACT spent the day in the new Lotus Emira, a brand-new supercar hailed as the most accomplished Lotus ever created.

This month, thanks to the team at Adamas Motors, FACT got behind the wheel of Lotus’ all-new, mid-engine sports car, the Emira. As this was to be our very first Lotus test-drive experience, we were intrigued to discover what this iconic British manufacturer is producing in 2023.

Exterior

Instantly demanding our attention were the sculpted surfaces and technical detailing of this exotic-looking supercar. The Emira is the first sports car to carry the new design language originally showcased by the award-winning Lotus Evija hypercar. The inspiration provided by the Evija is obvious at the front end of the Emira, where the prominent leading edge of the bonnet draws the eye like a magnet to the current iteration of the iconic Lotus roundel – making its first appearance on a new Lotus sports car. The unique-in-class exit vents integrated into the bonnet are further evidence of the Evija’s influence, effortlessly guiding airflow over the body and optimising the aerodynamic nature of the vehicle. The standard wing-inspired vertical LED headlamps are yet another tip of the cap to the brand’s hypercar.

As we moved to the flanks, the influence of the Evija’s striking exterior design became even more apparent. Crisp feature lines and fluid surfaces complement the shrink-wrapped cabin that tapers toward the rear end. The sculpted sections cut into the

doors hint at the car’s performance capabilities and lead the airflow towards the intake ahead of the rear wheel. Vents cut into the muscular rear haunches, along with 20-inch wheels – specially developed for the Emira – further highlight its athletic prowess. At the back end, the integrated bumper is dominated by the Lotus wordmark that sits above an Evija inspired, body-coloured panel. On each side, a flat C-shaped LED light cluster linked by a slimline, high-level brake light adds a further touch of class to an already exceptional exterior design. As a final flourish, Lotus have included a black section housing twin exhaust pipes on either side of the number plate, along with an air diffuser situated underneath to assist downforce.

Interior

Designed to combine exceptional support for high-speed cornering with total comfort for long-distance journeys, we found the car’s two standard four-way electric adjustable seats to be nothing less than sublime.

Due to the dramatic supercar-like low stance of the Emira, you sit mere inches from the road surface. This unique driving position instantly imbues the driver with the feeling of being on the starting grid of a racetrack. This sense of speed and sportiness has been achieved while managing to match the best-in-class ingress/egress and headroom.

Every design detail of the contemporary cockpit environment

BEHIND THE WHEEL •

places the driver at the forefront of the Emira experience. We highly appreciated the pure ergonomic design, perfectly placed instruments and premium materials used throughout. Further notable interior features include a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel with metallic spoke detail and integrated controls, a wraparound dashboard that blends into the door trim, a raised gear shifter and ambient wraparound interior lighting. Aside from the surprising number of storage spaces throughout the cabin, luggage can be stored behind the two seats (208 litres), or in the 151-litre capacity boot to the rear of the engine.

Infotainment & Tech

The new Emira’s infotainment system is accessed through a 10.25-inch centrally mounted touchscreen and a 12.3-inch TFT driver’s display behind the steering wheel. We found this responsive display, with its clear images and graphics, to be user-friendly and extremely useful. Additionally, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both integrated as standard. The Emira also marks the first-ever automotive partnership between the highly respected British brand KEF and Lotus. KEF have supplied an exceptional 10-channel premium sound system featuring their signature Uni-Q technology.

Performance & Safety

The Emira has two engine options, a Lotus-engineered 2.0-litre, four-cylinder unit from technical partner AMG and the beloved 3.5-litre V6 of our test model. Originally fitted in the Lotus Exige and Evora, this V6 is calibrated by Lotus. Coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission, it delivered what we can only refer to as a vastly superior driving experience. Producing 400hp and 317Nm of torque, this mechanical monster can surge from 0-100km/h in a mere 4.2 seconds and deliver a top speed of around 290km/h! Besides the high-performance braking system of the Emira, the car boasts an extensive range of driver assistance and safety features. These include adaptive cruise control, launch control, rear parking sensors, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), an anti-collision system, fatigue alert, lane departure

warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, road sign information and a vehicle speed limiter.

Our Verdict

From its striking exterior and interior designs to its powerful on-road performance and high-end tech, it’s simple to see why the Emira is being labelled as the most accomplished Lotus ever created.

A CLASS APART

This next generation Rolls-Royce sets a new precedent in the creation of an entirely original class of motor cars, the UltraLuxury Electric Super Coupé. Taking design inspiration from many sources including contemporary luxury yacht concepts, this electric masterpiece acknowledges its forebear, the Phantom Coupé, with its generous proportions and split headlight treatment – a contemporary Rolls-Royce design tenet.

Engulfed in supple and inviting leather, the interior draws inspiration from the timeless mystique of the night sky. With an intricate show of shooting stars, the Starlight Headliner is spellbinding whilst the Illuminated Fascia mesmerises with over 5,500 stars. Additionally, Starlight Doors incorporating 4,796 softly illuminated stars are available. Spectre is equipped with a completely redesigned digital ‘Architecture of Luxury’ – SPIRIT, which sets a new precedent for how technology and luxury are married with automotive excellence. It not only manages the vehicle’s functions, but also seamlessly integrates into the marque’s Whispers application, allowing clients to interact with their car remotely, and receive live information.

The first production two-door coupé to be equipped with 23-inch wheels in almost 100 years, Spectre is the most powerful and most aerodynamic Rolls-Royce ever created. The Architecture of Luxury has been perfectly tailored to integrate the maker’s electric powertrain, enabling ideal battery placement within the floor plan. The mechanical setup has been honed over countless hours of specialised testing, including in Dubai, and ensures a truly optimal ride quality. Coupled with planar suspension,

Spectre delivers Rolls-Royce’s hallmark ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ – an unparalleled driving experience. Intuitive, perceptive and sharp, this is the most connected creation the marque has ever conceived. With 141,200 senderreceiver functions, seven kilometres of cabling and over 25,000 sub-functions, it is able to process complex data and exchange information with unparalleled ease. Ten driver assistance systems accommodate the driver for a smooth and safe journey. Spectre is available for commission immediately, with the first client deliveries commencing in Q4 2023. THE NEXT-GENERATION SPORTS CAR

The private launch event took place at the marque’s state-ofthe-art Moda Mall showroom. The world’s first Super Tourer, this next-generation sports car combines a scintillating driving experience with exceptional refinement, cutting-edge technology and indulgent luxury.

It features a best-in-class power output of 671bhp/800Nm from a four-litre, V8 twin-turbo engine, with a top speed of 325km/h and accelerates from 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds. Supported by an all-new suspension system featuring the latest adaptive dampers, control and connection are further amplified by an exceptionally precise and direct Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system and, for the first time on an Aston Martin DB model, an Electronic Rear Differential (E-Diff) that enhances agility and brings the DB12 alive on the most dynamic of roads. Drivers get a choice of five pre-set driving modes: GT, Sport and Sport+ offer more freedom to explore the limits of grip and traction; Wet mode enhances stability on lowgrip surfaces; and Individual mode allows the driver to precisely tailor the vehicle systems to their preferences.

More muscular, the bold and assertive exterior is the perfect expression of power and features the largest front grill ever fitted to an Aston Martin coupé. The DB12 is framed by new Light Emitting Diode (LED) headlights with a distinctive new Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) signature and intricate surface detailing. Sitting proudly on the nose is the latest evolution of the iconic Aston Martin wings badge. New smaller, frameless wing mirrors complement the new design whilst also improving the aerodynamic profile of the car.

Aston Martin have worked closely to optimise the structure of the lightweight wheels to maximise performance without compromising aesthetics. The Michelin Pilot Sport 5s wheels feature noise-cancelling polyurethane foam inserts that reduce tyre ‘hum’ transmitted to the car’s interior by 20%.

A major DB12 landmark is the introduction of Aston Martin’s next-generation infotainment, the marque’s first in-house system. It forms the centrepiece of the all-new interior design that integrates the latest technologies and compatibility with mobile devices, with luxury craftmanship and the finest materials. This supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and is a fully integrated multi-screen system, displayed using 10.25inch Pure Black, 1970x720 high-resolution screens with ultraresponsive capacitive touch control. Driver-centric controls are ergonomically placed along the cabin centre line, ensuring maximum driver connection.

This all-new connected car ecosystem utilises three key elements – the DB12, the Aston Martin App and Aston Martin’s secure data servers. They connect through globally roaming 4G LTE / GSM cellular networks via the embedded e-SIM in the DB12, which is provided and funded by Aston Martin.

The new DB12 is available to order, with first deliveries scheduled to begin in Q3 2023. ✤

THE RETURN OF AN ICON

The Crown first debuted in 1955 as the Toyopet Crown. It was the first Japanese saloon to hit Middle Eastern shores back in 1960, the last being sold around 2000. The new Crown is built around the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA-K) platform. This delivers excellent body rigidity and a low centre of gravity, guaranteeing a more rewarding driving experience. There is a choice of two environmentally friendly powertrains. The first hybrid electric powertrain consists of a front electric motor and Toyota’s first-ever 2.4-litre, inline, four-cylinder turbo engine, mated with direct shift, six-speed automatic transmission, which generates 349hp and 550.8Nm of torque. The second consists of two electric motors and a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, generating a total power of 222hp. The hybrid-electric batteries are continuously charged by either the petrol engine or when decelerating and braking, eliminating the need to plug in a power cord.

Drivers can choose from several driving modes, including Normal, Eco, Sport, Sport+, for enhanced steering response, flat cornering and a sense of stability; Comfort, for a more supple drive that emphasises passenger comfort; and Custom, which allows drivers to adjust system settings individually to their exact driving habits. The Crown’s exterior design is characterised by its simplicity and modernity, combined with its high-quality interior features. The display and operating equipment offer easy control, while the curved shape of the instrument panel provides the driver with optimum focus.

ONCE YOU GET A TASTE FOR IT YOU’LL NEVER WANT TO STOP

In Conversation with…

Juan Manuel Fuentes Pérez

• 5 OVER 5

You took over as General Manager in January this year. How has it been so far?

As the new General Manager, the transition has been smooth overall. I've had the opportunity to work with a talented team and have been impressed by their dedication and commitment. We have achieved several major highlights during this period. Additionally, we have focused on enhancing the club's facilities to ensure an exceptional experience for our members and guests.

You’re certified in club management (CMDip) from the Club Manager’s Association of Europe. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned from it and intend to apply in your current role?

The CMDip certification has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of club management principles. One of the most crucial lessons I've learned is the significance of creating a strong club culture and fostering a sense of community among members. By promoting inclusivity, developing effective communication channels and organising engaging events and activities, I intend to enhance the overall member experience and ensure a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere at The Royal Golf Club.

What surprises can we expect in the summer at The Royal Golf Club?

Course enhancements. During the summer we will make significant improvements to our golf course to ensure a more

enjoyable experience. We will redesign certain holes, add new features and refine the landscaping to enhance the natural beauty of the course. We also have big announcements coming up soon; stay tuned for updates on our website and social media channels.

Golfing is a strategic sport. As someone who plays golf, do you think it has made you a better manager?

Golf is indeed a strategic sport that requires focus, patience and decision-making skills. As a golfer, I believe it has positively influenced my managerial abilities. Golf teaches valuable lessons about setting goals, assessing risks, adapting to changing conditions and maintaining composure under pressure. These qualities translate well into the management realm, where strategic planning, analysing situations, making informed decisions and maintaining a composed demeanor are vital. Golf has enhanced my ability to approach challenges strategically and think critically, which ultimately contributes to my effectiveness as a manager.

You lived in Bahrain from 2015 to 2019 and returned earlier this year. What made you return, and how has the island changed since you were last here?

Bahrain has indeed been making significant efforts to develop its tourism sector in recent years. The government has recognised the potential of tourism as a major economic driver and has been investing in various initiatives to attract visitors to the country. ✤

ISLAND INSIDER

Assem Aouf

Food & Beverage Manager, Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa

How significantly does The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa contribute to Bahrain’s leisure and tourism industry?

I have been working with Radisson Hotel Group for more than five years now. At The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa in Bahrain, we have all segmentations – groups, corporates and leisure and many events such as conferences, weddings, exhibitions and National Day celebrations, as well as daily activities. Also, I would like to mention that in Bahrain, the country is open and ready for all big events, parties and

international competitions. There's great support from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism for all of those activities.

How did you decide to pursue a career in hospitality?

The hospitality sector is an ideal choice if one's goals are stability and growth. In this industry, no two days will be the same. You will meet new people and face new challenges every day, thus the chances of a hospitality job becoming mundane are very rare. For me, life without it would be dry; hospitality is the oxygen that we all

need. Personally, I chose a career in this field because I am passionate about learning about other cultures and people's customs.

When you’re not dining at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa, which is your favourite cuisine to explore on the island?

At The Diplomat Radisson Blu, we have many food options, including international, Mediterranean, Asian and Italian cuisines. So, most of the time, I prefer to dine here. But, my favourite cuisine to explore is Middle Eastern.

SERVING AUTHENTIC FLAVOURS

Enrico Morselli, Head Chef at Hilton Garden Inn Bahrain Bay, shares exciting snippets from his one-year journey at the property, local inspirations and his signature dish – a smart twist on an Italian classic.

fact magazine 66
• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

You’re close to completing a year at the Hilton Garden Inn Bahrain Bay. What has been the most exciting thing about this journey? I would like to begin with New Year’s Eve Buffet, which was the first big event for me in this new role and it was amazing, great atmosphere and beautiful customers. Then, creating the new menu for Together & Co. Restaurant with the help and guidance of our regional team was an achievement.

How have local ingredients and flavours inspired your culinary aesthetic?

As an Italian, I was not used to spices, we only use fresh herbs, so I started to experiment and prepare dishes with different mixes of spices, and I found some of them very interesting, such as black lime to marinate meat and fish or to use in soups and stews.

How would you describe the dining experience at Together & Co.?

The ambience is enjoyed most in daylight with the Bay view. The food is international, some local dishes, Indian,

Asian, Italian — a bit of everything to please everyone. My team and I are doing the best to keep all the recipes as authentic as possible for the best dining experience. On another aspect, to give our customers a different dining experience, I implemented the Italian theme night every Thursday, a buffet with a variety of Italian classics and some traditional dishes that are very regional and not very well-known.

Tell us about the creative process behind your signature dish. My signature dish is the Tortino di Parmigiana, my twist on one of Italy’s famous classics. One day, I had to make a big tray of parmigiana for a special event. As the portions had to be square and perfect, we were required to trim them off. I took all the trimmings, chopped them, put them in mono-portion molds with some parmesan cream in the centre of the mixture, baked them, and served with tomato ragout, a drizzle of parmesan sauce, crispy eggplant skin and fragrant basil oil. ✤

A LUXURIOUS LUNCH

Melissa Nazareth headed to the exclusive Address Beach Resort Bahrain for a laid-back lunch with stunning views.
CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

Address Beach Resort Bahrain has become the latest, exclusive destination for relaxation in the heart of Marassi Al Bahrain. This is a much sought-after location, considering the many exciting projects coming up in the area including Marassi Galleria Shopping Mall. When I learned I was headed there for a culinary experience, I was certainly excited. Walking onto the property, I witnessed a sprawling resortstyle hotel. We were to dine at The Restaurant, which serves internationally-inspired dishes, curated for a range of palates. Offering a well-lit, sophisticated ambience, everything about the place spelled luxury – the minimalist yet detailed décor with soothing hues of white, gold accents and just the right amount of indoor foliage for a pop of colour. We picked a table close to the door that leads onto the outdoor dining area. This gave us a view of the adjoining two-kilometre beach and never-ending sea. Our hosts were generous with their service and smiles. As soon as we sat down, they served us refreshing mocktails. Lemony and minty, Twist came with a lavender sprig as garnish while The Breeze was a blast of berries with a soothing ginger ale aftertaste. My colleague, who had been here earlier, couldn’t stop waxing eloquent about the chilli butter, which is served with a bread basket. One bite and I knew why. A humble ingredient, chilli, but it compounded the intensity of the buttery flavours. I kept going back to it throughout my meal.

The Salmon Ceviche was next to arrive. While I could eat this all year round, I think this cold appetiser is ideal for summertime because it’s so refreshing. Coral salmon cubes tossed with sweet and sour mango and creamy avocado, drizzled with a light bell pepper coulis. The acids in the lime juice had perfectly cured the

fact magazine 70

salmon while maintaining the freshness of the protein. It was served with nachos, which were also crushed to garnish the ceviche, offering a good crunch. I enjoyed eating it with and without the chips; without, it was a good palate cleanser between courses. Next, we were served the Angus Beef Ribs Kalbi. The beef ribs, marinated for 24 hours and then cooked for up to 13 hours, were deboned and sat royally on the plate. We tried to slice them but they kept falling apart – such was their tenderness! The bone was polished to form the perfect stage for swirls of potato mash and a rainbow of vegetables. A beauty to behold! Cooked with Asian spices and sauces, from star anise to soy, the meat was packed with robust, nuanced flavours. Fried onion toppings deepened the caramelised taste. The mash, cloud-like and fluffy and the crunchy, well-seasoned asparagus, carrot, broccoli and red radish complemented the protein.

I learned from Chef Gaurang Vilekar that The Restaurant serves rustic dishes with a modern touch. Ribs, he said, are typically served with rice, but The Restaurant serves them with a different carb, adding a spin but maintaining the balance. Another rustic dish, Lobster Thermidor, was equally delightful. The majestic crustacean served as the perfect vessel for this gratin-style creation. The cheese, torched, offered a nice crust. Encased within was buttery, sweet lobster cooked with mushrooms, more cheese and basmati rice. The earthy tarragon, aromatic, worked splendidly with the other ingredients, making every mouthful a magical experience.

Our last main course was Risotto Al Tartufo. Generally speaking, I’m not a big fan of this dish because I find it starchy. However, The Restaurant’s creation didn’t disappoint. I enjoyed this comforting plate of Arborio rice, cooked al dente, which had taken on the salty, umami flavours of the truffle and porcini mushrooms. The truffle cream and parmesan lent an immense richness. Our hosts had told us right from the start that we couldn’t miss the Saffron Baba dessert. If you like milky sweets, this one’s a no brainer. A soft, airy brioche topped with an aromatic saffroninfused custard, floating in a pool of golden milk. Pastry Chef Shane Wickramasinghe told us the milk is warmed so the brioche absorbs it better. The colours on this plate were divine – sunshine-hued elements with highlights of gold leaf and a pop of ruby red from pomegranate seeds. Our second dessert, Lotus Cheesecake, offered something completely different. A deconstructed version of the classic cheesecake, it featured a quenelle of the highest quality cream cheese, which was combined with malty Lotus butter. It was sat on a Lotus biscuit crumble and garnished with berries. A delightful medley of textures, colours and flavours – what a fun way to eat cheesecake! All in all, this was a truly enjoyable experience. I will definitely make a return to try the other interesting dishes on the menu. Perhaps book a summer staycation too, so I can enjoy the food and everything else that this exclusive, luxurious beach resort has to offer. ✤

FLAMING HOT FLAVOURS

• DINING DELIGHT
Lawson Misquitta visited the new hot dining spot, Flames & Flavours at The Art Hotel & Resort, to savour a world of exciting creations.
DINING DELIGHT •

Exiting the blistering summer heat, I was glad to enter the pleasantly cool lobby of The Art Hotel & Resort. The elegantly designed space is an architectural sight to behold. It wasn’t long before my dining partner and I were kindly greeted by the hotel staff and directed to our destination– the newly opened Flames & Flavours restaurant.

We were immediately struck by its spacious and tastefully designed style that allowed for ample natural light to flow through the space further enhancing the contemporary and chic design choices of the interior. The restaurant also boasts one of the best outdoor seating areas that overlooks the Amwaj Marina and offers breathtaking views of the turquoise blue waters of the Gulf. As we sat at our table, we were welcomed by Executive Chef Theo Rudiferia. He was very friendly and expressed his wholehearted excitement to be heading the new restaurant. As we spoke, Chef Theo revealed his joy in the effort that it took to craft the ideal menu that offers numerous tantalising and appetising preparations sure to delight and satisfy the entire family. Thrilled post our chat with chef, we perused the menu and placed our orders. First to arrive was the Semolina Crusted Fried Zucchini, cut in long strips and covered liberally in a coating of seasoned semolina and parmesan. They were served along with a creamy tzatziki, fresh tomato salsa and a delicious smoked chipotle dip that was vibrantly flavourful with the perfect touch of heat. This simple but lovely preparation was tender on the inside with a good crispiness on the outside and the dips brought that extra joy to every bite. Next up was the beautifully served plate of buffalo mozzarella with Heirloom tomatoes, olives and herbed breadcrumbs, topped with olive oil. The impeccable presentation was picture perfect, but even more impressively, every mouthful

• DINING DELIGHT

showcased a playful mixture of textures and subtle flavours that made our taste buds swoon.

That was followed up with a serving of Flames Battered Shrimp, coated in a delectable mix of sriracha sauce, sour cream and mayo. The crunchy batter on the outside with the juicy shrimp on the inside was splendid by itself, but being smothered in creamy spiciness that added a wonderful tang and bold taste made it irresistible. We cleared the plate in a matter of minutes, and it looks certain to become a quick crowd favourite!

We continued with the main courses. First to be served was one of Flames & Flavours’ clear standouts – the Australian Stockyard Beef Tomahawk. A thick cut of meat, we’re talking 1,400 grams of goodness. A tomahawk steak is a bone-in ribeye steak, the long rib bone left intact. The bone is cleaned or Frenched leaving a fully exposed section reminiscent of the handle of an axe, also called a tomahawk. This particular serving was big enough that it could easily be shared among those dining in a pair or more. We experienced a collective moment of awe not only at the sheer size of the cut but also at the immensely attractive presentation that included the various sides comprising onion rings, blistered grape tomatoes with roasted garlic bulbs and roasted red peppers. Cooked to medium as per our request, the taste was utterly spectacular. Tender and juicy with a perfectly seared crust, it melted in our mouths with all its sumptuous flavours. This was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had, and I was truly and thoroughly delighted. Just when I thought it wouldn’t be possible to top something that grand and, most certainly, anything that followed would fall short, we were served the Baked Chilean Prime Seabass. In a direct contrast to the steak, this fish offered the lightest and most delicate profile of flavours. Immaculately cooked, the texture was tender and soft with an undeniably rich and buttery flavour. While the accompaniment of Kalamata olives and sundried tomatoes elevated every bite with a deep umami finish. Another clear favourite at the table, we gladly devoured every last morsel We also tried the Tex-Mex Burger that comprised a juicy beef patty served along with a gratifying combination of the freshest toppings that included guacamole, pico de gallo, jalapenos and some rich aged cheddar..

We truly didn’t think we’d have any space left for dessert but, like any sensible individual with a sweet tooth, we managed to find the room. The Key Lime Pie we ordered looked great and tasted absolutely divine. It had a perfect balance between citrusy, sweet-tart and creamy.

We also tried the Chocolate Molten Lava Cake that arrived freshly baked with its centre soft and gooey, oozing with decadence. Served with a dollop of velvety vanilla ice cream, few things manage to round a meal off this flawlessly.

From the great ambience and service to the wonderfully prepared palate pleasures, Flames & Flavours is ready to make its mark. And after our first experience, we find ourselves already looking forward to our next visit. ✤

A FEAST OF FLAVOURS

Lawson Misquitta visited Teatro Downtown to try their new menu that proved to be a delightful journey of flavours across many beloved cuisines.
FOODIE CORNER •

Located in the bustling heart of Manama and tucked away on the fourth floor of the Downtown Rotana is the hotel’s premier restaurant – Teatro Downtown. Upon arriving at the restaurant on a lively Thursday evening, me and my dining companions were warmly greeted by the staff and were seated at a table that showed off a lovely panoramic view of the city centre.

As I looked around the place, I found myself impressed by the aesthetic of the restaurant’s interior which was characterised by tasteful modern décor with an elegant and relaxed ambience. Truth be told, we were quite excited to be making the trip to Teatro that evening after being made aware of their new, revamped menu.

As we looked through the menu, we were visited at our table by Teatro’s Head Chef Warrick Ong. Hailing from the Philippines, Chef Ong has been an integral part of Downtown Rotana’s kitchen for over six years. He enthusiastically told us about the various new additions to the menu and highlighted its simple intention of being able to offer a more globally-inspired cuisine to guests. We kicked off our evening with refreshing mocktails of orange juice, lime and soda. And it wasn’t long before our first appetisers, Beef Bao and Burrata, arrived at the table. The light and fluffy steamed bao buns were stuffed with a juicy, mouth-watering filling of braised beef brisket and crisp Asian slaw. It was accompanied with a serving of spicy Gochujang mayo that brought just the right amount of heat to every bite. While on the other hand the second dish was a revelation to me, creamy rich burrata served with fresh juicy Heirloom tomatoes diced to just the right size, along with Taggiasca olives and dressed with basil, olive oil and pesto sauce; this was simplicity at its flavourful finest

fact magazine 78 • FOODIE CORNER

and a new personal favourite of mine! Things were undeniably off to a great start!

Next, we were treated to one of Chef Ong’s signature sushi preparations called the Passion Torch Roll. Held together by a thinly cut slice of flame-seared salmon on the outside, done using a torch to gently scorch the surface of the fish, transforming its flavour and bringing forth a singed, smoky texture. It served as the perfect contrast to the buttery and silky feel of the fresh tuna and avocado on the inside. Topped with a delectable sauce and dressed up with a pretty edible flower and pieces of gold leaf, this was visually a sight to behold that was equally as satisfying once eaten, colour us impressed!

This was followed with an amazing Combo Bento Box that included chicken satay skewers, Peking duck spring rolls and wasabi shrimp tempura. Every preparation brought out something special from each of the ingredients used. Combined with the accompanying sauces – wasabi mayo, mango Dijon and peanut sauce, it was an absolute triple threat of meaty goodness! Thereafter came the main courses, the first of which was the Lobster Linguine – a rich, creamy and deeply flavourful bisque infused with garlic, onion and chilli was the perfect base for smooth strands of perfectly cooked spaghetti. Handfuls of cherry tomatoes along with the tender, firm and succulent pieces of lobster meat completed the dish in the most pleasing and sublime manner. This was truly one of the standout dishes of the night. Also offered on Teatro’s menu is a variety of choices for personalised ramen preparations, and we had to try some for ourselves, opting for the miso sauce with beef broth and chicken. The rich brown broth was bold and hearty, with a beautiful umami flavour and was drizzled sparsely with chilli oil to add that extra oomph, absolutely

delicious! Other elements such as the noodles, various veggies, boiled egg and the perfectly cooked chicken came together to create the ideal bowl of soupy brilliance.

Our final main course was a wonderful cut of ribeye steak that had been well seasoned and cooked exactly as requested to a perfect medium. The robust flavours and juices came flowing abundantly with every melt-in-your-mouth bite.

We ended the dinner with a stunning dessert called the Teatro Special Nougat Parfait. Part of the closing act, this was a grand finale if ever I’ve seen one. Served on a mountain of ice, decorated elaborately and placed throughout were nearly all of the exquisite offerings from the dessert menu. There were plenty of delicious tropical fruits, different flavoured mochis and the Valrhona fondant cake served with vanilla ice cream and more. But the clear standout for me was the Nougat Parfait, which consisted of hazelnut nougat parfait with milk chocolate crunch along with spicy orange marmalade and chocolate gelato – every spoonful just hit the right spot!

As the night ended, I must highlight that all the staff were extremely kind and attentive throughout our meal, which helped make the overall experience great.

The variety offered on the new menu left us thoroughly impressed and satisfied with the culinary journey across different cuisines. There’s plenty more to explore at Teatro and we will be returning soon. I’d recommend you should visit too. ✤

A DELIVERY WITH A DIFFERENCE

The FACT team was treated to a VIP lunch at the office when we experienced Gyuto's VIP outside catering service.

• ON THE MENU
ON THE MENU •

The restaurant’s Al Liwan location has become a firm favourite with fans of contemporary Japanese cuisine, so we were excited to hear that they have launched a catering option. And this is no plastic tubs and noodle boxes affair. Oh no, this is the real deal! So much so that this experience felt like a total treat.

The two smartly dressed Gyuto representatives arrived at our office bang on time, as promised, and began to unpack a special cool pack, which ensured our feast was as fresh as could be. And, very quickly, our meeting room table was laid out just like a restaurant with pretty ceramic and wood-like serving bowls bearing a selection of maki rolls and salads as well as proper dark, stoneware plates, funky black cutlery (plus a container of chop sticks), small personal pots for the soy sauce and a selection of ginger and bright green wasabi as well as real linen napkins.* Very posh.

We paused for some pictures before digging in and loading our plates.

The crab salad with Asian mixed leaves, cucumber and avocado with yuzu goma dressing was delicious – if my everyday salads tasted like this, sticking to a diet would not be such a trial. The shredded crabstick meat was flavourful, firm and plentiful while the soft creamy avocado offered the perfect foil to the dressing, the zesty citrus and sesame of which gave an earthy balance to the mix of flavours.

Wakame salad provided the perfect option for the non-meateaters, the seaweed offering a taste of the ocean without being fishy and the combination of pickled plum and walnuts giving a subtle almost sweet and sour combination alongside the sesame, soy and rice vinegar of the goma dressing. Even the carnivores among us were much taken with this one. The selection of makis was huge. I love the name of Spicy Tuna Rock ‘N’ Roll almost as much as the taste, the fresh yellowfin really grabbing the attention with its accompaniment of green onions, sesame crumb and a healthy, pungent kick of sriracha sauce. Another tuna option, with sambal mayo and a kimchi base was equally flavourful, the fermented vegetables adding an interesting heat and texture.

The California Classic of crabstick, cucumber, avocado and tobiko was refreshing and light with the fish roe imparting a delightful pop on the tongue. And the Salmon Classic, with its accompaniment of avocado and sesame seed, almost comforting in its reliability –whoever first discovered this combination really knew what they were doing. It really is a classic, and rightly so.

The Tekka Maki, on this occasion made with simple crabstick wrapped in nori seaweed, was perfect with a good coating of hot wasabi and the Prawn Tempura Maki was definitely a favourite with its crunchy asparagus and spicy mayo. There was plenty for the vegetarians and vegans too. A particular success was the vegan California Maki bearing a surprise in the form of caramelised onion alongside the avocado, asparagus, cucumber and sesame sauce. We were all very impressed with the innovation and sweetness of the onions. So much so that we had to check to make sure we had properly identified the ingredient.

fact magazine 82
• ON THE MENU

There was also a veggie option with carrots which we particularly loved for the addition of this vegetable’s crunchy texture, not to mention the lovely colour combination. Overall, the food was excellent. The rice, as you would expect, perfectly cooked every time, which is very important. The flavour mixes in the maki were well balanced and, though the rice vinegar was clearly in evidence, it was not overpowering, as is sometimes the case.

We tried the maki selection, but Gyuto also offers other options such as tacos, sliders, dim sum and bao and small plates that include selections such as calamari, rock shrimp tempura and spicy salmon and tuna crispy rice. There are even desserts such as Miso Caramel Cheesecake, which sounds intriguing. There are five-, six- and seven-course menus available and all are great value.

So, next time you’re entertaining and want to impress, this could be the perfect option. They’ll come to your home or office and set up the whole thing – all you need to do is pour the beverages and accept the compliments (though maybe don’t try to claim the dishes as your own).

ESCAPE TO PARADISE

Liz O’Reilly was among the first group of GCC-based writers given a sneak peek at the new Avani+ Fares Maldives Resort and found a little piece of paradise waiting to be discovered.

• TRAVEL

The Maldives is an archipelago of 26 natural, ringlike atolls and, on arrival at Velana International Airport, we were to board a seaplane to this newest offering from Minor Hotels. A first for me, I was excited for the 35-minute seaplane journey which was a little bumpy, a lot noisy but absolutely enchanting as it afforded us endless views of the azure blue Indian Ocean and its sprinkling of small island atolls.

Avani, part of the Minor Hotels of Thailand, is a wellestablished hospitality brand with properties in more than 15 countries and now it is adding the plus to its brand –offering everything Avani is known for, plus a little more. From the handpicked staff – ebullient GM Riaan Drever personally interviewed all the team members, ensuring we encountered a crew who imparted a seriously high-quality yet family feel of ‘service with love’ – to the oh-so-telling little extras such as the abundant drinking water supplied in re-useable glass bottles, stamped with the legend ‘Liquid Therapy’ and printed with information on water saving and recycling (the whole resort has a zero-plastic-waste policy), we could truly feel the ‘plus’ factor.

On the resort’s jetty, we were greeted by numerous staff forming hearts with their hands to welcome us (did I mention that here, everything is done with love?!) and proffering refreshing cold towels and fruity drinks. What a delightful welcome!

My Island Home

Blissfully, the island has no cars, so we hopped onto a golf buggy and headed to our accommodation. My Sea View Studio Villa was surrounded by lush green foliage which offered both privacy as well as a heavenly fresh scent, particularly during the monsoon cloudbursts.

The big comfy bed with its abundant fluffy pillows looked directly out of floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors to my own private infinity pool. And an almost secret path led to the beach, a glimpse of the aquamarine waves just visible from my private deck.

The villa offered everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay from a kettle and coffee machine to an iron and flat-screen TV. Again, going that little bit further and demonstrating the resort’s eco credentials, I was greeted by a small pot containing delicious, candied orange peel dipped in dark chocolate – a note explaining that rather than wasting fruit peels, the chefs come up with innovative ways to use them.

The villa’s décor, similarly to all those we visited across the island’s multiple accommodation options, was muted and comfortable. Pale woods and high-quality materials belying the serious amount of thought that had gone into every detail from the pre-set air conditioning, which automatically switches off if a door is left open, to the generously sized sofa that could easily convert to a bed. A tasteful wall mural in shades of blues for the sea and pale, creamy yellows, evoking the sand and sunshine, was a reminder of the paradise beyond my door.

TRAVEL •

And the bathroom. Oh, the bathroom! Of course, there were the usual amenities – gorgeously soft, fluffy robes and towels so huge I could literally wrap myself from neck to toes, a wide-headed rain shower that must have been at least 50cm across and a range of lotions and potions from Malin + Goetz, held in refillable stoneware containers, each smelling more fabulous than the last. But, the absolute star of the show for me was the outside wet room, accessed either from within the villa or via a separate external door. Equipped with both a rain shower and a huge, deep bathtub. Trust me, if you visit, as you really should, there are few experiences quite like luxuriating in such a tub beneath the star-filled Maldivian sky, especially during a warm rainstorm, should you be so lucky.

Time To Relax

When you’ve had a full day of work followed by an overnight flight (or, to be honest, just because you’re on holiday and you feel like it), what better way to relax than with a trip to the spa. Shortly after arrival, a massage was in order. Sipping on a refreshing, fruity drink, I filled in a tablet with my health details and then settled onto one of the most comfortable massage beds I’ve ever encountered for an hour of blissful kneading with perfect pressure and warmly scented, aromatic oil. The AvaniSpa has a medispa room, treatment villas, steam and sauna with options including pain management and IV drips alongside the more conventional spa offerings.

I also tried an evening relaxation session with singing bowl sound therapy on the beach. I have to admit I was a bit sceptical but with the breathing techniques imparted by expert instructor Shalin, who also conducts sunrise yoga, coupled with the resonant vibration from the bowls, I found myself completely calmed and tranquil. A pretty amazing experience that I would highly recommend. The resort also has a fully equipped gym but, I have to admit, that’s not my idea of relaxation!

And So To Eat

On our first day we ate lunch at The Skipjack Bar, a gorgeous space which sits beside the infinity pool and looks directly out onto ocean waves putting on a show of every shade of cerulean you can imagine. At night, the wooden decking glows with myriad pin-prick lights, mirroring the starfilled sky above. For the friendly staff, nothing is too much trouble. On one of our visits, we asked to go off-menu to try some genuine Maldivian fare and were almost immediately presented with two delicious local curry dishes. A truly sociable spot, we later had a wonderful evening of dining and dancing to the tunes of a DJ who, wonder of wonders, actually accepted requests and took great delight in getting a diverse group of guests throwing some shapes and mingling on the dance floor. Another night there was karaoke! This really is a place to let loose and make memories.

The menu at Skipjack is diverse and I would challenge

anyone not to find something to enjoy. My personal recommendation, however, would be the tuna tataki with its light citrus/soy dressing. Don’t miss out on the cheesy truffle potato wedges, which are every bit as good as they sound. And the chocolate cake, deeply indulgent and fully satisfying.

Since we were there for a soft opening ‘first look’, Skipjack was also where we got to sample the menu for Charcoal, which was still to open. A fabulous concept which will involve dining around a large charcoal grill on which foods are cooked over coals made from the island’s plentiful coconuts – Fares island, on which Avani+ Fares sits, is an ancient coconut plantation. We were treated to a veritable feast which included one of the best tuna tartares I have ever tasted – and that includes fresh off the docks in Tokyo. The concoction in which the fish was cured was absolutely sublime. Being Charcoal, there was also a lush selection of steaks and other meats as well as plenty of veggie options.

Ocean Terrace is the resort’s main restaurant where we breakfasted royally each day. From eggs cooked every way you can think of to smoked salmon or a mini-Wagyu steak and from homemade granola and overnight chia pudding to Maldivian specials such as Mashuni – tuna and coconut sambal – and pancakes with local coconut honey, everything was superbly fresh and tasty. You could choose to sit inside the bright and airy dining room or head out to the deck and eat facing the beach. A perfect way to start the day.

fact magazine 93 TRAVEL •
Avani -Three Bedroom Sunset Overwater Pool VillaLiving room

This venue was also where we tried the menu of the stillto-open Tribe. Another great concept, a space where ‘tribes from all over the world meet, bringing their food and drinks to share with each other’. Staged around a stunning, outdoor, wigwam-style pavilion bar, Tribe offers a selection of sharing-style plates from Thai to Japanese, from the plains food of Colorado, the tribal dishes of the Amazon River and the valley foods of the Basque country to Middle Eastern favourites. I would particularly recommend the Charcoal Grilled Leeks with chimichurri and smoked almonds from the Amazon section, a first for me since I don’t usually like leeks and was amazed to find these so tender and tasty. And, even better, each section of the menu comes with its own suggested beverage pairings to perfectly complement the regional flavours. On our last night, we were thoroughly spoiled with a truly exceptional Adrift dinner on the beach. I’ve mentioned the amazing skies several times, but you really need to experience the stars in a place where there is no light pollution to appreciate their utterly breathtaking beauty. A table was laid for us on the sands and we were serenaded by a talented guitarist as the waves rippled gently on the shore. Avani+ Fares has various other outlets too, including Petit Bistro the first kids-only restaurant in the Maldives catering to young guests with healthy and universally loved dishes. This is alongside an extensive dedicated area where young visitors will be fully entertained at AvaniKids and Teens Club.

The Land Of The Reef

Of course, no visit to the Maldives would be complete without some maritime adventure. And, with Avani+ Fares situated on the Baa Atoll, which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, we were more than eager to explore under the watchful eyes of dive master Jean and his professional team. We headed out by boat to snorkel in the warm waters, hoping to spot the plentiful manta rays which call this spot home. Though they evaded us on this visit, we did encounter sea turtles and several species of colourful fish. Harmless sharks and dolphins also inhabit these waters and, on a later sunset cruise, we were lucky enough to spot dolphins at play. Watching the sunset over our paradise island as monsoon storm clouds built behind us was a truly magical experience.

We snorkelled but Avani+ Fares has full dive facilities and will also offer PADI diving courses. And, for those who prefer their adventures above the waves, there is a fully equipped water sports centre offering the likes of standup paddle boarding, kayaking and windsurfing as well as a range of fishing options.

And So, Farewell

As you can probably tell, I was thoroughly impressed by this new and highly thoughtful property. The weather was perfect, mostly sunny with gentle breezes and the occasional monsoon cloudburst. The staff are exceptional and the location breathtaking. Avani+ Fares Maldives Resort, I can’t thank you enough! ✤

The Bear Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3

Need to Know:

The Bear is an American comedy-drama television series created by Christopher Storer. The story is based around the life of a talented young chef, who cut his teeth working in the world of fine dining, and suddenly finds himself having to come back home to Chicago to run his family's Italian beef sandwich shop after the suicide of his older brother, who has left behind massive debts, a rundown kitchen and an unruly staff.

Director: Christopher Storer, Joanna Calo

Cast : Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The Bear follows Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), a talented young chef from the fine-dining world, and Richard ‘Richie’ Jerimovich (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they attempt to change their scruffy restaurant into an actual good food spot. The entire crew, initially disjointed and completely at odds, seem to be working against each other and make life very difficult for everyone. But Carmy attempts to switch things up for the better and the way things play out makes for an entertaining watch. Entering into a world completely different from that he’s been used to, Carmy must now somehow balance dealing with the soul-crushing realities of running a small business as he also figures his way through strained familial relationships that he earlier left behind in Chicago when he moved away. He deals with all of the above while still grappling with the impact of his brother’s suicide. The show is about food, family and the insanity of the grind as Carmy fights to transform his failing family restaurant rather than give up and sell the property. The show serves up an engaging storyline with topnotch performances across the board that’s sure to have viewers coming back for more.

Need to Know:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a superhero film about Marvel Comics’ team of intergalactic mercenaries (and sometime heroes). Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, the group is still reeling from the loss of Gamora. An unexpected attack at their headquarters sees another team member critically injured sending the group on an urgent adventure to save them or risk the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Director: James Gunn

Cast : Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Will Poulter, Chukwudi Iwuji

Why Is It Worth Watching?

After the remarkable conclusion to the first era of Marvel’s cinematic universe, the studio following has been steadily losing steam with every release since. That could be attributed to the audiences’ overall fatigue with the genre, or the all too familiar plotlines and universe building being rehashed. But stepping away from the humdrum is Gunn’s final offering in charge of the Guardians. The plot for Vol.3 is an entertaining and heartfelt story that’s filled with the humorous banter and over-the-top cosmic action that we’ve come to expect from this beloved band of misfits. The focus this time centring around the mysterious backstory about the guntoting, boisterous Rocket Raccoon (Cooper). The movie delves deeper into his traumatic backstory and brings forth one of the Marvel universe’s most interesting antagonists – the High Evolutionary (Iwuji). The narrative sees the gang jet across space exploring and adventuring in the strangest and most fascinating destinations as Gunn ties it all together and concludes his version of the Guardians’ story in the most rewarding and satisfactory manner. In true Guardians’ trademark, the soundtrack is once again an absolutely awesome mix throughout the movie!

ON THE RECORD

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

What Matters Most

The fifth studio album by American singer and songwriter Ben Folds, What Matters Most comes after an eight-year hiatus and is released via New West Records; his last, So There launched in 2015. The wait, however, has been worth it. The artist calls this his most ‘true’ album, one that he couldn’t have made at any other point in his career in terms of the music, lyrics and underlying emotions. The LP offers musical variety with the synth prelude on But Wait, There’s More , which continues to the end, as well as the horns; the brief but heartarresting harmonica set on Back to Anonymous ; the drum backdrop that runs throughout Paddleboat Breakup ; the urgent stringsy tunes of the acoustic guitar on Moments

The melodious Winslow Gardens released earlier this year and has a bittersweet nostalgic vibe. In fact, nostalgia is the common overarching theme and its many nuances and layers appear across the board. The title track is sure to strike a chord with most as it explores the common emotions connected with missing friends, reminiscing on old times while ‘sorting through photos’ and picking up the phone to share news with a close one, only to realise they’re gone.

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

I’ve Loved You For So Long

The Aces are a four-member American alternative pop band. I’ve Loved You For So Long is their third LP released via Red Bull Records. The songs give off your typical teen-girl-in-love vibe but in a good way.

The title track is hummable, especially the catchy ‘Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo’ bit. The drums in the background add a poprock element without taking away from the softness of the song, considering it deals with the delicate emotion of love, of being reunited with a lover, ‘taking her back to where it all started’.

Girls Make Me Wanna Die is fast-paced, more stringsy with forceful bass, and deals with the angst of unrequited young love. The album explores love and its many facets; break-ups, for instance, as on Not The Same Suburban Blues starts off with a powerpacked electric guitar set, which reappears throughout the track. It lends a certain impatient quality, a frustration of sorts, which is reflected in the lyrics too; it’s about feeling trapped in a small town with people who don’t understand you, going about their lives. One wonders if there’s a figurative meaning – sometimes, love can feel that way too. Stop Feeling hits different, having an almost psychedelic quality that’s achieved with a kind of echoing effect using drum beats and piano tunes.

THRILLER/SUSPENSE

Everyone Here Is Lying

In the ‘safe’ suburb of Stanhope, supposed family man William Wooler is devastated at the end of an affair and angry when he comes home to find his nine-year-old daughter, Avery, back from school early. His temper erupts and hours later, the girl is missing. As the search becomes more desperate, neighbours make ever crazier accusations and things become decidedly strange because it seems that everyone here is lying! Will they ever find out who took Avery?

MYSTERY/CRIME

The Block Party

Garnering rave reviews even before its publication, this promises to be the perfect beach or pool read. The ‘friends and neighbours’ in an exclusive cul-de-sac are caught up in a confusing mire of scandalous secrets behind their seemingly idyllic façade until, on the night of the annual Summer Block Party, there’s a murder. The story travels back a year, as rivalries and betrayals unfold with our flawed gang discovering that the real danger lies within their own block and nothing—and no one—is ever as they seem.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Digital Chore Chart Go Orcas! Sugar, Spice And…

We've said it before, we'll say it again – homemaking is a full-time job. Sadly, it's thankless! Spain, however, is working on an app that will keep track of the chores each member of a household does. This will highlight the work load on women and the resulting mental stress they bear; it's 2023 but we still live in a society that often

Recent reports of killer whales attacking boats off the coast of Spain have struck fear into the hearts of the yachting community. And with media reports speculating that a matriarch orca, White Gladis, previously injured by a marine vessel, had taught her companions to seek revenge, the rebellious cetaceans have garnered an enthusiastic following of eco-warriors. An Indian street food vendor has been adding whole green chillies as a topping on ice cream! Inspired by a flavour he tried in Thailand, this creation, he says, is popular with those looking for a spicy, out-of-thebox experience. considers housework as a woman's job. Additionally, homemaking, though it indirectly yet greatly contributes to the economy, isn't a paid job. This app is a step in the right direction and will open many eyes. Additionally, it's a great way to monitor and keep a record of who's doing what and how the work can be divided.

are finally reaping the reward for years of marine interference, whale hunting and theme-park imprisonment? Much as we might like to believe this is the case, experts say the whales – who’ve never previously attacked humans – are much more likely to be curious about the boats and exhibiting short-lived ‘fad’ behaviour, such as that seen in 1987 when orcas were witnessed parading with dead salmon on their heads!

come up with new ideas in order to stay in the game. While some are calling this particular concept vile, others are lapping it up, literally! But one can't deny, it's a well-thought-of, calculated combination; it's not unheard of to add chilli to drinks and chocolate. Moreover, with organised brands coming out with outrageous flavours such as mac and cheese and pizza, this small-time ice cream vendor, we think, is pretty 'cool'!
