OCEANCO’S PROJECT SHARK

Oceanco’s new 90m motoryacht, Y717 is turning heads in the yachting world…

While the yacht yields a massive amount of volume, DeBasto has ensured that the profile remains long, sporty and lean without a top- heavy superstructure that characterises so many very large superyachts.

The legendary Queen Elizabeth 2 is starting a new chapter in her storied history as a floating hotel, dining and entertainment destination in Dubai.

The Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) has opened its doors to the public following highly anticipated international interest.

PCFC Hotels - part of the Dubai government’s Ports, Customs and Free Zones Corporation - has reinvented the legendary vessel as the latest must-see tourism destination, in a city renowned for its world-class attractions.

The world-famous cruise liner, which has a history spanning five decades, is now docked permanently at Mina Rashid, where her dining, accommodation and entertainment attractions can be discovered by the public. Her opening marks the first phase – a “soft opening”- of several stages in which segments of the liner will be revealed for a unique experience capturing all that was grand about her 40 years of service. In this first phase, she will be welcoming passengers on board to experience a selection of beautifully-restored rooms and suites, to discover five of the planned 13 restaurants and bars and explore her rich history in the adjacent QE2 Heritage Exhibition.

Hamza Mustafa, CEO of PCFC Hotels, said: “To finally open the QE2 is a dream come true for my team and I. It is one of Dubai’s most highly anticipated projects and we know that a lot of people are going to be very excited to see her for the first time, or to step back on board the vessel that created so many wonderful memories during her 40 years at sea.

“We have dedicated more than 2.7 million man-hours into transforming this legendary ocean liner into the multi-faceted tourist destination that she is today and I am very proud to reintroduce her to the world as she embarks on the next stage of her celebrated journey,” Hamza added. “It has been an honor to work on this wonderful project and to help ensure that our lovely Lady lives up to her new slogan: still making history.”

The 13-deck hotel has been thoughtfully restored to her former glory – maintaining her most loved interior design features - including her period furniture, renowned paintings and famous memorabilia. The original porthole windows still add a maritime feel to the attractive modernized guest rooms and a number of her original restaurants have retained the same names and décor as her former years. Whilst extensively preserving her authentic elements, she has been fully equipped with all the latest technology.

During the soft launch of the QE2, passengers can experience some of the ship’s original restaurants including The Chart Room – a sophisticated and historical lounge and bar; The Golden Lion – a traditional English pub and potentially one of Dubai’s oldest; The Pavilion – a family restaurant with an expansive terrace overlooking the marina; Lido – the hotel’s all-day-dining restaurant; The Grand Lounge – a cabaret-style lounge with a weekly entertainment programme; and the Yacht Club – a chic rendition of the former venue as well as a unique take on the traditional afternoon tea.

The hotel’s signature restaurant is The Queens Grill which offers a refined selection of British fine-dining dishes as well as a tasting menu that recreates a classic selection of dishes from 1969.

Royal Caribbean International has taken incredible steps in improving its commitment to sustainability through its “Above and Beyond Compliance” initiative.

The cruise industry at large has always been criticised for its environmental impact, from the passenger waste to the effluent produced by their gigantic engines. Nevertheless, by ollowing strict company policies, practices, and regulations, Royal Caribbean International’s initiative helps to achieve the highest possible standards of environmental and community stewardship. Starting with waste management through their Save the Waves programme, which started 26 years ago, Royal Caribbean International has evolved a companywide philosophy of emissions reduction and waste water treatment. Through its key principles of reduce, reuse, recycle, generation of waste material has decreased, materials are reused and recycled wherever possible, and remaining waste is properly dispose. Not to mention that it is strictly forbidden to throw anything overboard.

For numerous years, through implementation of advanced designs and technologies, Royal Caribbean Cruises have built some of the lowest emission-producing ships in the industry. As transporting cruise ships demands more energy than anything else onboard, Through utilising alternative fuels or renewable energy sources, emissions of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants are reduced significantly.

Design elements, such as hull configuration, the introduction and complete refit of LED lights which use less power and create less heat, or high efficiency appliances, which do jobs faster and use less energy. Window tinting across the fleet has also meant the reduction of air conditioning usage,

while protecting the interiors, meaning they last longer.

Royal Caribbean International has ensured that waste management has been done as sustainably as possible. The cruise liner’s own team hand-sorts the waste from every trash receptacle on the ship, including those in staterooms looking at factors such as whether waste is reused, recycled, incinerated or landfilled by the local authorities. Travellers concerned with their environmental footprint may sail with ease knowing that sustainability and environmental protection is at the forefront of investment and an on-going effort at Royal Caribbean International.

MEGA SCHOONERS GET REFIT

Two of the world’s largest sailing yachts, Eos and Athena, have booked the same timing for their coming refit projects with Royal Huisman’s refit division.

The 93m / 305ft three-masted Lürssen schooner Eos, until recently the world’s largest sailing yacht, has for some time been a regular customer for Royal Huisman’s superyacht refit division, Huisfit. The Eos team has just signed a new contract with Huisfit, taking full advantage of the flexible choice of deep-water location offered to meet their needs and schedule.

At the same time, the Huisfit team has announced that the 90m / 295ft three-masted schooner Athena, built by Royal Huisman in 2004 and with a seriously impressive log book of globe-circling adventures, has reserved the same timing for her latest refit programme. In 2014 the Huisfit team also took care of various aesthetic and technical updates by sending its own ’flying squad’ of specialist personnel out to Athena during a stopover in the Mediterranean.

Both yachts will be at a deep seawater location in Holland for several months during the winter “refit season”.

“There can be little doubt that returning clients are always a shipyard’s best ambassador,” Huisfit’s Bert Tromp said. “So we are particularly pleased that this announcement concerns two of the world’s largest and most prestigious sailing yachts – both of them long term Huisfit clients. Not only that, but we will have the privilege of working on the world’s 5th and 6th largest sailing yachts at the same time, which is quite an accolade for Huisfit.”

The Sunreef 80 and Sunreef 60 – two yachts belonging to the shipyard’s allnew sailing range are to make their official international debut at the show as well as the head-spinning 40 Open Sunreef Power Diamond Edition. The Sunreef Supreme 68 Power and Sunreef 74 are also to join the shipyard’s Cannes Yachting Festival 2018 lineup for what is going to be a unforgettable showcase.

AN ENDLESS BEAUTY: CRN LATONA

CRN’s mastery of shipbuilding reaches its utmost expression in the new 50-metre superyacht Latona, which will be presented as a world première at the Monaco Yacht Show 2018 at the end of September. Hadag takes a closer look…

Delivered in May, the Italian Atelier’s latest masterpiece has been custom-built to meet the wishes of a highly selective and determined Owner. Drawing inspiration from the ‘Superconero’ of the 1960s, the Latona marks the success of a new joint project between CRN and Zuccon International Project. Indeed, this new yacht’s technical solutions and the slender lines of the hull have been developed by CRN’s Engineering Department, while the craft’s exterior lines were pencilled by design firm Zuccon International Project, who, together with the Shipyard’s Interiors&Design Department also took care of both interiors and exteriors. With her 50 metres in length, four decks and an underdeck, the Latona stands out for her classical, timeliness profile that further enhances the style and elegance of outdoor areas. The yacht’s interiors are pervaded by a refined Liberty-style mood, a stylish fil rouge that unravels through all guest areas. The streamlined bow and the spacious interior and exterior volumes, in turn, also include some breathtaking areas almost ‘hanging’ over the sea, let the Latona shine in all her endless beauty.

Designed jointly with the Customer, this megayacht has been forged and built to meet her Owner’s request for the utmost customisation, in an effort to achieve pure uniqueness – a uniqueness that is also reflected by the colour chosen for the hull, a stylish shade of turquoise whose intensity varies depending on the sea bottom and the waters in which the yacht is cruising.

Onboard the Latona, guests will find numerous outdoor areas – from the wide Mediterraneanstyle sundeck to the lounge area at the bow, the outdoor living areas and the al fresco dining area located aft to the magnificent terraces overlooking the sea, all the way to the exclusive tender bay obtained on the lower deck. The latter forms a large open-air lounge integrated with the beach club, featuring a solarium, a fitness area, a hammam and a sea-water indoor pool perfect for children to have fun and also ideal to store the tender in the yacht’s ‘belly’ during navigation.

The Latona is a yacht endowed with a strong personality, capable of harmoniously combining the elegant style of her exterior lines with highly functional outdoor and indoor areas as well as interiors boasting a truly distinctive design. And it is just in the interiors that the skilful, refined craftsmanship of the Shipyard and its suppliers has reached its peak, thanks to a painstaking study of the Central European style from the 1920s. This mood now pervades all interiors, starting from the floors, which are enriched by unique decorations chosen by the Owner, like the sinuous dark brown embroidery - a leitmotiv that is found across all decks. Depending on the areas of the yacht, this elegant pattern unravels along the floors (both marble and carpeted ones) as well as on the curved handrail of the internal staircase, creating a pleasant contrast with the light-shade wood panelling on the walls.

Sinuous lines are, indeed, like a fil rouge accompanying guests in all areas of the yacht. Furniture too is characterised by soft, rounded shapes that stylishly harmonise with handcrafted, sophisticated décor elements - from the lacquered doors decorated by graceful, ‘waving’ bass-reliefs to the custom-made lamps in Murano glass with flower and leaf patterns drawing inspiration from nature, in perfect Liberty style. The elegant interiors are further enriched by oak-wood wall panelling with silver pickle finish. Every wood panel is a unique piece, created with unparalleled craftsmanship and decorated with fabrics selected individually by the Owner and wooden flower patterns that are also found in the ceiling-mounted spotlights of the master stateroom.

Onboard comfort is ensured by latest-generation home automation solutions, allowing control of the audio-video system, the lights, as well as the decorative and black-out curtains using the i-Pads installed in all areas and rooms or directly from one’s own device after downloading the dedicated app. Thanks to two Caterpillar C32 1081kW @ 2300 rpm engines, the yacht can reach a maximum speed of 16 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots. The Latona is the latest jewel created by CRN and the utmost expression of the craftsmanship and mastery of a dedicated and demanding team, driven by the vision and passion of a highly-selective and determined Owner family. This yacht fully embodies the Shipyard’s will to shape the Owner’s talent and wishes, as expressed by the motto “Made by you with our own hands.”

The Latona can comfortably host up to 10 guests in five cabins characterised by extremely refined details: the master cabin, two VIP cabins and two double cabins, plus accommodation for nine crew members, including the Captain. CRN’s Latona will be presented as a world première at the Monaco Yacht Show 2018 at the end of September.

This fabulous flybridge elevates even further the standards of style, comfort and performance that have always defined Ferretti Yachts’ DNA. Born from the partnership between Ferretti Group’s Engineering Department and its Product Strategy Committee, this is the first Ferretti Yachts creation to boast an exterior designed in collaboration with architect Filippo Salvetti.

The interiors were crafted by the group’s own architects and designers. As part of an innovative evolution process, Ferretti Yachts 670 combines certain characteristics of the models launched in 2016 and 2017 (Ferretti Yachts 450, 780, 850 and 920) with some significant new features. These include an outstanding optimisation of interior and exterior spaces, offering owners and their guests a perfect blend of communality and independence. The Ferretti Yachts 670 measures 67 feet (20.24 metres) but incorporates a number of solutions typically seen on larger vessels. This design approach is plainly evident from the yacht’s layout, available in a standard 3-cabin configuration on the lower deck as well as a version with 4 cabins. The design is essential, rigorous, characterised by clear and stretched lines that provide the yacht with an elegant and sportive look, typical features of all the recent Ferretti Yachts creations.

The outside fore area, instead, presents a fascinating innovation in terms of space optimisation, with an ample living area, that can be entirely covered by a bimini top and is formed by three spacious sofas that face one another. On request, along the side sofas it is possible to install two dining tables facing each other, which can in turn be converted into relaxation surfaces so as to transform the whole area into one big sun pad.

The ample flybridge, which at 24 m2 is one of the most spacious in its class, can be fitted with free-standing furniture aft, while in the central area, to the left, is a fully equipped bar that faces an entertainment area with a C-shaped sofa and a dining table. Moving forward, you come to a second control station on the left and then a very large sea-facing sun pad. Ferretti Yachts offers 3 different layouts for this flybridge: the standard open version, a version featuring a roll bar for satellite systems with built-in Bimini top, and finally a hard-top version.

A glass door in the cockpit opens up onto the main deck lounge, with its two beautiful facing sofas, upholstered in Zimmer + Rohde fabric, and centralized coffee tables. Further along, the dining area features an attractive open- plan kitchen and dining table. Beyond the kitchen is the helm station: a cutting-edge technical space equipped with integrated Naviop-Simrad instrumentation, inspired by the innovative solution already adopted on larger models such as Ferretti Yachts 780, 850 and 920. For the first time in this length-class, in fact, the integration of a single innovative multi-display interface makes it possible to monitor all the main functions, not just from the main helm station but also from the fly bridge.

The state-of-the-art electro-hydraulic steering system, developed in collaboration with XENTA, replicates the one already seen on the Ferretti Yachts 780 model. Among its many benefits is greater steering comfort thanks to the extremely easy handling of the helm and maximum efficiency when turning, in any sea conditions and even at high speeds. The steering system can be integrated with a cuttingedge joystick package, paired with a powerful proportional thruster, which includes the DOCKING and TILLER/CRUISE functions, for an engaging and dynamic sailing experience. An innovative Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) for shaft-line propulsion is also present. Moving along, to starboard there is a door that provides direct access to the bridge from an outside walkway. Hidden under the steps to the lower deck is a space that can be used as an additional stowage compartment. Below deck, owners can choose either a 3 or 4-cabin layout, which in itself is a testament to the superior use of space achieved with

this model. The former offers 3 cabins with the owner’s suite, located amidships, which even includes a spacious study that can double as a private space for the owner, for a total surface of 18 m2. The bed is in the centre of the room, and behind it, towards the stern, are a walk-in closet on the port side and a large bathroom to starboard. This layout offers better soundproofing against the noise from the engine room, which is another significant benefit of the design.

The Ferretti Yachts 670 is fitted with twin MAN engines rated at 1200 mHP, giving it a top speed of 32 knots and a cruising speed of 28 knots (preliminary data). Alternatively, MAN 1000 mhp engines are also available. Available on request, a stabilization package with two gyroscopic Seakeeper stabilizers guarantees the utmost stability while cruising or when docked.

Millennium & Copthorne Hotels has appointed Luca Medda as the new Cluster General Manager for Grand Millennium Muscat & Millennium Executive Apartments. Taking the helm of the award-winning hotels, Hadag sat down with the man himself to talk about the changing face of the hospitality industry, what makes Muscat special, and his future goals…

What have been your first impressions of Oman and its hospitality market?

My first impression has been incredible. Very positive. Oman is amongst the most beautiful countries I have ever lived in and I am very excited about it. When it comes to the hospitality market, Oman is going in the right direction at the right pace. Very strong infrastructure with a new airport hub and a great country to visit for any purpose - cultural, leisure, MICE, corporate, etc.

Both the Grand Millennium Muscat & Millennium Executive Apartments are setting the benchmark for luxury accommodation choices in Oman’s capital. What’s your vision for both during your management?

Our aim at the two properties is to provide the ultimate genuine service to our guests and to create a strong working relationship with our employees, guests, suppliers and local association.

You bring three decades of experience to the role, having worked in Europe and the Gulf extensively. What has kept you so loyal and dedicated to the hospitality industry?

The passion in what I am doing and the great enrichment I gain every single time I meet new people.

Being the General Manager of two properties is a huge role. Tell us more about your expertise and lessons learned over the years that have helped you prepare for this job?

I have worked in the major hotel divisions (room division and the F&B division) as a result I have detailed knowledge of the full hotel operation. I have had the pleasure to work for very exciting hotels in many countries in the world, for several companies and in many positions. 16 hotels in nine different countries for nine different hotel chains. This experience has given me the right amount of knowledge and mental flexibility to be prepared for this job

In properties of this high calibre where not much really needs changing, how do you keep yourself challenged and continuously ahead in the hospitality game? In reality, our business is in continuous development and we have to be dynamic and be ready for changes. Who would you say is the 2018 clientele of the Millennium brand– describe the person who walks in through the hotel doors…

A vibrant person who wants to enjoy a great product (spacious guest rooms, great food outlets, SPA, Tennis Court, among the largest ballroom facilities, only 5-star hotel attached to a mall and the new impressive apartments, duplex and villa with private pool) in the perfect location in Muscat and who wants to pay the correct price for his/her stay.

The responsibilities of General Manager could get overwhelming at times. How do you manage your time, expectations and the need for attention to detail?

I have been working in this business for the last 30 years and I have started my career back in Italy as kitchen porter in one hotel, close to my parents home during the summer school vacation and, ever since, I have been working in this business and sometimes lived and worked in the same hotel for some years. I spend many hours of my working day in the operations to observe and see what we can do to improve our performance and improve our services.

Tell us some of your goals with Millennium –things you want to make a mark with over the next year…

To position these great properties in the market and to let everyone know our hotel facilities and USPs. This is our goal. We want to show to everyone our beautiful home away from home to as many people as possible.

When it comes to quieter days in Oman, when occupancy is low and not many visitors are coming into the country – how do you cope with that and still keep the hotel relevant?

I have joined in May and ever since I have been focusing on the day-to-day operation and the strategy for the upcoming winter season and year. We have many interesting launches which will happen from September onwards.

Are you the type of GM who does things from his office, or is your working style more interactive where you walk around the hotel often?

in the operations and meet and greet our employees and guests, however I spend several hours at the office where I cover all the administration/ meetings to work on our day to day operation and see how we can improve our services to our guests. We have so many tools to understand our guests/ employees and by observing all this data we are able to come up with much more feasible actions plans.

What’s your approach to everyday motivation for your staff – how do you make sure that everyone’s on the same page, everyday?

The employees are the most important assets in our business and I love to spend as much time as possible with them. It gives me the pleasure to share with them my experience and vision of this exciting industry but at the same time I like to listen to their point of view and ideas. Millennium hotel and resorts is investing a conspicuous amount of money for the development of each employee and our commitment is to groom as many employees as possible into future leaders of this industry

Can you tell us a little bit about any upcoming promotions or strategies you will utilise for appeal to both business and leisure travellers?

We are working on many promotions such as: new menu for Bahriyat our signature Mediterranean restaurant specializing in seafood, opening for lunch with a exciting set menu, launch of the outdoor grill venue Mazaj from October onwards, new designed weddings menu, wedding promotion, SPA membership, villa with private pool, new food theme nights in our Taybat restaurant, swimming classes, yoga classes, cooking classes, and a new revised menu for our Executive Lounge.

Egypt.. the land of the pharaohs, home of one of the seven wonders of the world, and a rich culture grew on the shores of the incredible Nile river. But, believe it or not, the beauty of this middle eastern jewel is beyond the historical greatness.

Between the Mediterranean and the red sea, Egypt owns some of the most amazing beaches in the region. Setting the goal to Hurghada, the search took off looking for the best hotel in the area. Soon the decision was easily made; The Sheraton Soma Bay Resort. It was the first time I even hear of such a place! Soma Bay is a fairly new destination located about an hour ride from the city of Hurghada. Think of it as a compound of five stars hotels and resorts; totally safe, totally isolated, totally charming. We chose to experience a road trip all the way from Alexandria, but, if you are not into this kind of adventure, you can fly to Hurghada and then take a car, that can be easily arranged by your hotel.

At 2 pm we were happy to enter the majestic property. A structure that takes you back in time to the Pharaonic temples; giant poles holding a high ceiling, all white, decorated with carvings that matched the prints on the fabric that covered simple furnishings. It is the lotus flower in its full glory. Few minutes was all it took for us to complete a smooth check in. A nice staff with the friendliest smile shows us the way to our suite. A couple of minutes walk from the lobby amidst a well maintained garden. You cannot miss it while walking through.. under or next to each and every plant or tree, a small garden plaque carries the name of the person who planted it. I thought, that’s nice!

The suite is vast, nothing less than the anticipated; a spacious living area furnished with a sofa set and coffee tables, a desk that I do believe anyone should be using for more that writing a post card, a small dining table, and a flat screen television. To the right hand side of the entrance door, a kitchenette with a small fridge, sink, kettle, and a double burner electric stove. A big sliding door opens on the left side of the living room to a big bedroom with a small walking closet another television and yet another fridge/mini bar. Tea and instant coffee sachet are at your disposal and small mineral water bottles are complimentary as well. Our welcome message on the other hand came on a shape of a chocolate cake. Oh yeah!

By 4 pm I unpack all and, not feeling sleepy, I could not resist stripping onto my swimsuit to go discover the pool area with my 11 year old daughter.

The main pool is big enough to avoid an uncomfortable crowd, and even though it closes at 6:30 pm (quite early if you want my opinion), we weren’t bothered, the evening offers a different kind of fun. Youngest fellows can equally enjoy the kids pool in the same area.

Around the pool, you find all of the resort’s dining establishments. Al Farafra Oasis Pool Bar will quenches your thirst with refreshing juices and cocktails. Facing the hotel, on either side of the pool you can choose your dinner discovery at L’Abydos Brasserie, the resort’s main restaurant serving international breakfast and dinner buffets. We were lucky to try the Lebanese buffet one night. On the other side, L’Emporio offers the best of the Italian cuisine, for lunch at the beach side with wood fire pizza, or a la carte dinner menu for a complete and authentic experience.

A daily entertainment program kicks off every night at exactly 9:30 pm offering an variety of shows, from traditional Egyptian shows featuring Tannoora and Belly Dancing, to African Acrobats and modern light dances.

Our day was automatically organized; breakfast followed by one of the many water activities with the help of the resort’s Water Sports Centre. So many exciting choices such as parasailing, kite surfing, fishing trips, snorkeling, catamaran, sailing, or glass boat trips that allows you to marvel at the coral reefs extraordinaire from the safety of a the boat, or maybe couples would try the romantic boat to renew a successful relationship. Other on land activities such as saffari trips can be arranged as well.

The property offers fitness enthusiast a gym but in the middle of all the action, gym is not going to be needed, at least not for me! however, if you are a golfer, Soma Bay may just won the title of your ideal vacation destination with a fantastic golf course at your disposal.

The resort also offers all guests especially the young adventurers great fun at Soma Splash Water Park.

Licensed divers will feel like a pure soul descended in heaven. Orca Dive Club is a five minutes walk from the hotel’s beach. A professional gate to the underwater wonders. Taste the charm of the house reef with a trial or go for a full diving course within few days. You can rent diving and snorkeling equipments and for as long as you want, forget about the land and immerse in the beauty of a virgin sea. I was really lucky to be offered a first dive experience. As much as t is hard to put it in words, this is what I told my daughter: “do you know the underwater TV shows you see on national geographic? well, once you are down there, surrounded by the

When it comes to haute-couture hotels you can usually expect haute cuisine, yet this is not the case with Bulgari’s five food and beverage offerings. Our destination for this visit is the Bvlgari Resort Dubai Yacht Club, a nautical themed restaurant strictly focusing on Mediterranean cuisine with a heavy Italian influence, paying homage to the luxury brand’s heritage. David Tapley explores...

The UAE has no shortage of fashion-branded hotels, with the likes of Armani and Palazzo Versace dominating the hospitality scene. Attempting to insatiate the region’s appetite for all things luxury comes the arrival of the Bvlgari Resort Dubai, taking things up a notch having been built on its own private offshore island shaped like a seahorse.

The Yacht Club stands somewhat apart from the hotel building, separated by the Bvlgari Residences and a sweeping marina home to a number of super-yachts – it’s the epitome of OTT. Stepping across the Bvlgari branded carpets and into the restaurant space, the similarities to Cipriani (another popular fine-dining Italian spot) are unmistakable. Interiors are panelled in wood in a similar fashion to the deck of a ship, with the metaphorical bow replaced by a well-stocked bar. Vintage photographs and staff dressed in a hybrid of white tuxedos and sailor uniforms complement the maritime theme.

As pleasing as the interiors are on the eye, we can’t resist the charms of the outdoor deck, overlooking the water, the vesselshaped hotel and punctuated by the glimmering spire of the Burj Khalifa on the horizon. Atmospherics aside, the food during the course of our lunch was consistently strong. With little room for re-invention, the Yacht Club menu represents a selection of Italian classics done remarkably well, under the guidance of charismatic Chef De Cuisine, Andrea Calducci.

The Yacht Club’s take on an old fashioned utilised Campari rather than whisky makes a strong first impression, served in a sliver cup and adorned with the Bvlgari logo burnt into a slice of orange peel (it’s the small details that count). We order the Burrata Pugliese, served with crushed tomato, basil and Taggiasca olives to complement the generous portion of creamy Italian cheese. Similarly, the Tartare Di Tonno Pinna Gialla presents a beautifully plated tuna tartare with quails egg and pink grapefruit that delivered on taste and left us wanting to take the Bvlgari crockery home (spoiler alert — we didn’t).

It was actually a dish that was recommended for us that came up trumps. The Fritto Misto Di Mare arrived upon the insistence of our waiter and we thoroughly enjoyed the lightly battered mix of squid, shrimp and vegetables – an indicator of how this dish should be executed. Definitely the most impressive fritto misto we’ve had in a while and the same can be said for the tartare.

We’re offered tasting portions of two pasta dishes, of which the al dente Linguine Al Limone is our preferred choice. A lemon linguine with clams and Sardinian bottarga (salted fish roe) provides a beautiful taste of the sea perfectly matched by our surroundings. The unique Maltagliati Al Ragu plates olives, red mullet ragout and maltagliati paste but fails to leave as much of an impression as the linguine.

Instinct draws us towards the seared octopus for our main course, but once again we’re swayed by our waiter’s insistence on the Salt Crusted Catch Of The Day. The salted crust is efficiently removed at the table and works as a means of keeping the flavour locked in and adding an intensity during the cooking process. The fish is expertly filleted and presented with a simple lemon butter sauce, potatoes, tomatoes and broccoli. Much like the aforementioned fritto misto, the fish capsizes our expectations into something we would certainly order again.

Five desserts are offered and despite the Italian influence there is not a tiramisu in sight - thankfully. Instead, we enjoy the Baba Classico, a yeast cake saturated in Limoncello syrup, marmalade and served with Chantilly cream. The baba is denser than we would’ve liked and we struggle to finish the portion. However, the Carpaccio Di Ananas has the table talking and marks a lighter way to end the meal. Pineapple carpaccio marinated with vanilla and basil and served with lemon sorbet.

Dining at Bvlgari, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect but we found the pricing to be sensible (considering the brand) and the service to be in the upper echelon of Dubai hospitality. Matching these factors with impressive food, of which many ingredients are locally sourced, and the Yacht Club makes for a pleasant treat when you want one.
