It has been another fabulous year for lovers of yachts and the luxury nautical life. Indeed, being a boating or mega yacht enthusiast definitely comes with its many highs; there are a whole array of incredible boat shows, all the way from Four Lauderdale to Monaco, and even shores closer to home with Dubai and other major Gulf cities hosting their very own extravagant boating events, and this is where some of the world’s biggest and most impressive vessels are revealed.

Perhaps one of the industry’s top recent reveals, for us, has to be the Lexus LY 650 (p12), there’s something to be said about a globally-renowned motoring manufacturer taking on the big and bold world of yachts – yet Lexus manages to do this with style and charm.

The Custom Line Navetta 42 steals the show going into a new year. The fruit of a two-year collaborative effort, the new superyacht epitomises a sailing philosophy based on superior design, sophisticated elegance and extraordinary performance (p22). On the other hand, the inspiring Sunreef 80 Gaya is proof that owners CAN get the yacht of their dreams, custom made to fit their tastes. SENSATIONAL 93-METRE FEADSHIP

Representing one of the largest yachts ever built by Feadship, this 93-metre masterpiece was towed proudly from the construction hall of the Feadship yard in Kaag.

With a generous beam of 14.10-metres, this groundbreaking Feadship will set a new standard in luxury. Working hand in hand with the experienced owners, Michael Leach Design has drawn an elegant and timeless exterior with breathtaking lines. Reymond Langton’s stunning interior is akin to a “beautiful and contemporary jewellery box”.

Five years in the making, the owners with the help of Burgess assembled a world class build team. Scouring the globe for the finest and rarest materials she promises to redefine the boundaries of luxury yacht construction. One of a kind features include a two-deck IMAX theatre, a fully certified helipad with Jet A fuel, four VIP suites each with 8k TVs, and facilities that cater to a wide range of sports including golf, basketball, volleyball and soccer among many others.

The Owners were present at the launch and said: “We want to thank Feadship director Jan-Bart Verkuyl and everyone at Feadship for taking us on an amazing journey.” Further commissioning work will continue in the months ahead including the addition of balconies and wing stations. The yacht will remain covered over the winter, to be seen in all her splendid glory in spring 2019.

DAMEN Yacht Support confirmed the sale of a new 55.5-metre YS 5009 (182 ft) from the Yacht Support range of vessels. The new vessel is currently under construction and due for delivery in summer 2019.

The DAMEN Yacht Support team worked with the owner’s team to create a highly customised design based on the YS 5009 (pictured). When delivered, she will be the seventh YS 5009 sailing today and, like recent deliveries POWER PLAY, SHADOW and AXIS, she features owner and guest interiors. Together with extra staff cabins, lots of storage and luxury service facilities, the whole proven platform comes in at under 500 Gross Tonnage.

The new flagship, the brand’s first above 300 GT, combines the qualities of seaworthiness, comfort, safety and customisation - all part of Custom Line’s DNA since the beginning - into a product that is truly revolutionary in terms of style, design and spaces, and whose range places it at the top of its class. The yacht’s colours, finishes and materials, as well as its many free-standing solutions and interior furnishings, were chosen in collaboration with Studio Luca Bombassei, a renowned Italian architecture and design firm, and are yet another testament to the endless possibilities for personalisation offered by Custom Line. Navetta Custom Line 42 is a striking example of that “family feeling” which made the brand famous worldwide: it welcomes guests into a modern and stylishly eclectic ambiance, enriched by a contemporary vibe that reverberates in the elegant yet functional furnishings, with their innovative and essential design. Aside from the unquestionable elegance, the new Custom Line flagship also impresses for its engineering innovations. Navetta 42, for example, offers unrivalled noise isolation thanks to a special flexible joint in the transmission lines that absorbs vibrations from the axis line. The goal of minimising phonic impact was fully achieved through targeted mathematical analyses for each and every noise source and its location on board. Cutting-edge damping solutions were also employed, using glued panels that increase comfort by reducing

noise and vibrations. Furthermore, just like on Navetta 37, the main deck is fitted with a state-of-the-art floating floor: a technique whereby the floor surface is separated from the fibreglass base by a layer of sound-absorbing materials, to reduce the transmission of noise and vibrations from the engine room to the living areas, while also softening any footfall.

Finally, as it exceeds 300 GT, the new Custom Line flagship must meet certain regulatory requirements such as those pertaining to stability in the event of a breach. Should the hull become damaged, Custom Line Navetta 42 features a system of automated waterproof doors that close upon specific commands by the captain, in order to isolate the forward compartment from the aft one, thus ensuring safe navigation.

TURNING HEADS: SUNREEF 80 GAYA

Following her sea trials in the Baltic Sea the Sunreef 80 GAYA was recently successfully delivered at the Gdansk Shipyard in Poland. Seeking more space and luxury in the pursuit of his navigation plans, the yacht’s Owner upgrades from a classic Sunreef 70. With her navy blue hulls and silver superstructure, topped with a black mast and boom, GAYA is an eye-catching sight.

GAYA’s detail-oriented Owner has had a large influence on the yacht’s interior décor and layout. The vessel’s main saloon uses genuine oak for the flooring, ebony veneer and designer furniture pieces to achieve a timeless and contemporary feel. The central social area features oversized lounging sofas with modular backrests, wine coolers, a transforming dining table for eight, a coffee bar and a 55” retractable TV. Flooded with natural light from the panoramic glazing, the saloon opens onto the exterior bow lounge and vast dining area on the aft cockpit. After launching the tender, the hydraulic aft platform extends the cockpit’s surface, offering extra lounging space.

Down in the hulls, GAYA sleeps up to 8 guests in supreme comfort thanks to a smart four-cabin layout including an opulent master suite with a dressing room and an elegant master bathroom clad in dark quartz. The cabins’ style picks up from the main saloon’s colour scheme with a relaxing mix of greige and black.

Portside of the main deck is the yacht’s galley. The workspace features plenty of smart storage, large countertops and is stocked with premium equipment. Generous freezing volumes as well a big wine rack and pantry are available below decks. The crew mess provides

a comfortable dining space for all four crew members.

A hub of daytime lounging and sunning, GAYA’s superyacht flybridge offers immense living space with large sunbeds, fitness equipment, a BBQ bar, a large heightadjustable table and free-standing furniture. The Sunreef 80 is an all-around sailing leisure yacht ideal for exclusive getaways, charter and transoceanic adventures. This model boasts a combination of exterior and interior areas easily flowing into one another. A clever bridge deck and superstructure design allow for a superior level of comfort onboard whereas the generous teak use, high bulwarks and classy lines underscore her modern style with a classic edge. With a completely fresh superstructure concept, the Sunreef 80 gains a saloon plan with an outstanding potential for customization. A vast, central lounging space with a panoramic view and endless layout possibilities, it opens both onto the bow terrace and cockpit.

The bow benefits from a cozy lounge, well shielded from sun and wind. To the aft, the saloon merges with the generous cockpit extended with a large aft platform. All the areas combined form a universal, open environment where flexibility and freedom reign.

While housing the main helm, the 54m² flybridge is definitely dedicated to leisure with more than enough space for movable furniture, a Jacuzzi, fully-equipped wet bar, a barbecue and large sunpads.

NEW SEAXPLORER 75

Luxury expedition yacht builder DAMEN introduced its updated SeaXplorer 75 design at the Monaco Yacht Show. The SeaXplorer 75 provides the ultimate crossover of superyacht quality and finish with serious capability.

Like each design in the SeaXplorer range, the SeaXplorer 75 benefits from DAMEN’s approach of upfront design and engineering to create an uncompromising technical platform that clients can fully customise to their requirements. It’s an approach that the market immediately responded to, making DAMEN SeaXplorer the established leader in luxury expedition yachting. The first two SeaXplorer projects sold are now under construction for delivery in 2020. The keel laying of a customised version of the SeaXplorer 75 took place in July.

“The SeaXplorer 75 is a yacht for all seasons for clients who want to make more use of their time to explore the world,” said Rose Damen, Managing Director. “The combination of our AMELS luxury yachting knowhow with our Damen Shipyards Group experience delivering commercial vessels is really unique – and you can see that in the design. The SeaXplorer 75 offers serious global capability but with true superyacht refinement at home in any marina. We’ve also designed her to be customised to our client’s bespoke requirements.”

The six-deck expedition yacht, 76.9 metres in length (252 ft), offers luxury accommodation for 12 guests with an Owners Apartment, two VIP Suites and the SeaXplorer’s iconic bow point observation lounge and outdoor deck.

The large volume of 2,650 Gross Tonnage explains her impressive inventory of expedition equipment, including two helicopters with certified helideck and belowdeck hangar, dive centre and two tender garages (fore and aft). The SeaXplorer can remain on station in remote areas for several weeks, with provisions, fuel, waste water holding tanks and garbage management for up to 40 days of full luxury service with no port calls.

DAMEN developed the SeaXplorer range of five designs up to 100 metres (328 ft) with its design partners AMELS and Damen Research, as well as operational design input from EYOS Expeditions and exterior styling by Azure Yacht Design.

120 SUNREEF POWER

Sunreef Yachts proudly unveils the shipyard’s latest superyacht concept - the 120Sunreef Power; a daring, aerodynamic design stretching living spaces to the extreme and opening new possibilities for worldwide cruising in ultimate luxury.

With her reversed bow, increased hull width and generous glazing, the 120 SunreefPower is a custom craft designed for bold contemporary yacht owners valuing strength and originality. With a growing interest for multihull concepts in the superyacht segment, the shipyard’s in-house design team has elaborated a monumental, yet dynamic catamaran model. Inspired by the supercar industry, the lines of the 120 SunreefPower are both elegant and sporty with numerous chrome elements and LED accents.

The 120 Sunreef Power offers full freedom in terms of décor and space arrangement. The first layout proposition includes accommodation for 8 guests and 8 crew. On main deck level, three sliding doors open the saloon onto the sides and the aft dining space to create a vast open-air lounge. The oversized modular sofas are the central point of the social area equipped with a 110” TV, interactive screens and premium sound system. The dining table for 10 is conveniently placed closer to the galley to ease service. Further towards the bow, the master suite makes the best possible use of the yacht’s immense 14.4m beam, offering a walk-in dressing room, vast master bathroom and direct access to a private terrace. Starboard off the main deck, guests find a peaceful retreat in the three luxuriously appointed en-suite cabins.

The main crew area is located in the portside hull, featuring comfortable accommodation for 7 along with a spacious mess. From there, a staircase leads directly to the yacht’s galley. With an efficient layout and clever storage solutions, the space is designed to facilitate workflow and deliver high-end restaurant service. The captain’s quarters and helm station are both placed on flybridge level to offer the best visibility. Towering over the main deck, the flybridge is the yacht’s main alfresco lounging and dining area featuring a bar, spa-pool, free-standing furniture and plenty of room for massage beds and gym gear. To the aft, two transformer platforms serve both as passerelles and swim ladders. The yacht’s ample garage holds the tender, jet-ski and wide selection of water toys. When we come across resorts in the UAE that make us feel like we’re relaxing on faraway shores, it’s usually a secret we like to keep to ourselves. However, Hadag’s latest staycation escape was so breathtaking that it would be a crime not to share. Welcome to The Cove Rotana Resort, Ras Al Khaimah…

As the very first Rotana property to have opened in Ras Al Khaimah, The Cove Rotana Resort sure has set the standards sky high. The sprawling hospitality favourite has become a sanctuary for many in the UAE who want a clean escape from the weekly nine to five grind, and a holiday of charm and culture for international and regional visitors. It’s no surprise as to why the stunning resort has gained so much popularity, and so quickly, you only have to step inside the relaxed yet elegant hotel reception area to have your first impressions and expectations exceeded.

Hugging the idyllic water inlet on the Ras Al Khaimah beachfront, overlooking the glittering Arabian Gulf and boasting 600 metres of pristine beach, it’s sometimes hard to remind yourself that you are in fact still in the UAE, where hot and humid reigns supreme – but the excitement of cool weather means more time for splendid staycations.

A very friendly front desk member of staff – dressed in immaculate, traditional local attire, greets us. It’s so great to see and be welcomed by a local. This adds a sense of genuine allure and uniqueness that many hotels in the UAE lack – the presence of someone warm, efficient and, most importantly, local to meet guests at check in. We instantly love the charisma of this resort!

LAGOON LUXURY

A total of 204 cosy rooms, designed with a distinctive Nubian touch, and 78 comfortable villas are serenely dotted around the resort. Whether you want to be in the hills or the lagoon, there’s plenty of accommodation choice to please every member of the family. Our large twin room is part of a duplex, three-bedroom villa located in the lagoon. You know what this means, right? Wonderful views, of course. Our ginormous balcony-cum-terrace has ample space from which to lounge and sip your morning cup of tea or coffee, whilst admiring the beach scenes (and you can pretty much get a good idea of how full or empty the beach is from here, in case you’re planning to hit the loungers for a tanning sesh).

The room has everything you could dream of; intricate arch details with simple, earthy décor and some of the comfiest beds, ever. Most of all, there’s a great amount of space with the bed area being separated via some steps from the living room; great for those who may have a little bit of work to catch up on but don’t want to do it whilst in bed, or for those who want to

lounge in front of the TV. To top that off, the bathroom is one of the nicest we’ve had in a resort. It’s big enough to twirl in with a large shower and vanity area, plus all your lush amenities – perfect.

We loved that there was already an iron and ironing board in the room and that we didn’t have to call housekeeping to get this, like in many other hotels. It’s the simple things in life! Cleanliness, comfort and convenience is at the forefront here and we indulged in our room, to the max.

FOODIE FIX

Considering that you’re surrounded by sea and desert, the food options at The Cove Rotana Resort are rather impressive. For breakfast, at Cinnamon All-Day Dining, you’ll find everything from an egg station to a crepe counter, pastry haven, big fry up style food such as sausages, hash browns, beans (all that good stuff) as well as cereals, yogurts, cold cuts, cheese, fruit and more. Coffee, tea and juices flow nicely, and the views from the outdoor dining area are a gorgeous way to start your morning.

Throughout the day and evening, you have the choice of three beach and pool bars as well as the lobby lounge to snack, nibble, feast – however hungry or laid back you feel.

What’s a staycation without a lovely dinner? Treat yourself to mouthwatering Mediterranean cuisine at Basilico Mediterranean Restaurant, a casual fine dining venue with a variety of traditional choices blending Mediterranean cuisine with an Italian emphasis. Complete with arched brown brick ceilings that create a spacious atmosphere and complemented with warm wood furniture, Basilico also has an open kitchen with live cooking station which is sure to impress. Be amazed by the breath-taking view overlooking the Arabian Gulf and leisurely enjoy the best that life has to offer “La Dolce Vita.”

Some of the must-have dishes include the creamy burrata, the tempting arancini, the juicy messy prawns and the tenderloin steak with sautéed spinach. If you have room for dessert (and you should definitely try and keep some) the tiramisu is a classic winner and so is the selection of ice creams. When it comes to food, you’re covered!

ICONIC HOSPITALITY

It’s one of the oldest hotels in the region yet remains just as iconic and hospitable today. Hadag’s Craig Ferriman walks into a little piece of history for a memorable stay…

If you stood where the Museum of Islamic Art is back in 1982 and looked out across the bay, the sight would look very different to how it does today. You would see only one landmark on the horizon at the other side of the crescent and it would look like a ship moored in a harbour. The sight was in fact a hotel called the Sheraton and over 35 years on, the landscape looks completely different to those desolate days, but the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel’s iconic ship-like building stands proudly and distinctively on the shore’s edge as ever it did. Walking into the hotel recently was like walking into a bit of history. Internally, it does look rather 80s; something of another age Monte Carlo glitz about the place which feels of its time and not contemporary but you know what, I loved it. The rooms feel like spacious cabins in a cruise ship. You sit on the balcony and look out to sea. It’s very elegant and highly classy. Just little touches count like the gold rim around the bathroom mirror or the thick blue carpets in the bedrooms –beautiful.

I started my trip with a visit to the pool cafe and had a hamburger and fries which was actually very good. The general manager recommended it and I can understand why. I walked around the lush lawns of the vast grounds outside the back of the hotel and found the beach that was a hidden treat. Life guards keep an eye on everyone but also ensure that non-hotel guests cannot sneak in which preserves guests’ privacy. For dinner, I walked over to the health club which has a great Italian restaurant located at the back with plenty of tables to dine al fresco by the side of the sea. La Veranda is an Italian restaurant and its chef, Emanuele Sabatini, has an award-winning menu. I enjoyed their hearty four seasons pizza whilst bathing in the breeze and taking in the bright lights of the great views of the Corniche.

The lobby hosts breakfast in Al Hubara which essentially sits in the basin of the building with all the finery of the structure of the property all around you. A well-known British politician was sipping coffee at the table next to mine giving me the feeling that this is a place where dignitaries still stay. Breakfast offered a bit of everything from fresh fruit to cold cuts to hot items – a very satisfying start to the day. After breakfast was digested I went to the gym in the award-winning health club. I had a one-hour session with a personal trainer. He was a Bosnian instructor called Arman and he made me do various exercises for 30-second intervals. He called it functional training. Afterwards, I felt parts of my body I didn’t know I had! It was brutal but brilliant. The gym though is amazing and absolutely enormous with large windows letting light pour in and letting you get lost in the sea views as you wonder where an hour on the treadmill went. I had a massage scheduled shortly after my exhausting fitness session which was the perfect antidote. A 60-minute Swedish massage did just the trick. All my pressure points were identified and my tense muscles were worked on. A great end to the stay!

Though tradition and old fashioned hospitality were the hallmarks of the stay, there were notable examples of innovation. Walk out the front door and through the gorgeously landscaped Hotel Park, you’ll find La Liga, which is a very cool sports bar where you can catch all the major football matches in the European leagues as well as great food to compliment it served up by Chef Juan.

Our Friday night was punctuated by a boogie at the Back Yard. This event is held at the far end of the Sheraton’s vast grounds, quite literally in the hotel’s back yard. Visiting live bands and a DJ keep the party vibe going all night long. Fairy lights and wooden garden benches with shisha and the cool sea breeze all contribute to a fabulous evening and the best bit was not having to queue for an Uber after it but to crawl into the warm and comfy bed for an incredibly good night’s sleep.

Buddha Bar needs no introduction and the newly-opened Buddha Bar Beach at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort has already made a mark in the capital. They’ve cleverly brought the classic Buddha Bar vibe and menu to Abu Dhabi with an absolutely stunning beachfront venue.

It overlooks Saadiyat Beach and has a beautiful relaxed vibe yet is uber chic and cool. Walking up to the venue with its palmtree-lined pathway and lush gardens will have you feeling like you’re on vacation. The hostesses are friendly and welcome us warmly. The décor is gorgeous with low lighting, plush furniture and a relaxing ambiance which is perfected by beats played by the resident DJ.

The menu, as you would expect from a Buddha Bar venue is Asian-influenced, and each dish has something very enticing about it. It’s a carefully put together menu and you can choose from hot and cold entrees, salads, sushi and ceviche and a choice of mains. This is one of those places where you’re initial reaction is to try everything on the menu – well, that was ours at least!

To start, we choose the lobster dumplings and the Buddha Bar chicken salad. The dumplings are truly delicious and it’s not hard to see why they are a favourite on the menu with their yummy creamy sauce. The salad is also a hit with tender five-spice chicken, cabbage and pieces of crunchy wonton pastry chopped up throughout.

We try the sushi platter for two aptly named Queen of the Beach and it’s simply incredible. The presentation has the wow factor and is served up with lots of sushi, sashimi, oysters and ceviche. This is the perfect dish to order if you really want to impress your dining companion.

The mains are just as good and we opt for the toothfish and the wagyu beef. The beef is tender and perfectly cooked with Chimichurri, corn and sweet Rocoto sauce. The toothfish is also super tasty and another dish on the menu that has garnered favouritism with sweet miso, quinoa salad and truffle dust.

This venue is definitely one to add to your eating-out list, the food is exceptional and service is very good. The bar area is also fantastic and the talented mixologists can whip you up something creative to quench your thirst.
