mother of 3 kids with the oldest 17 and the youngest 9 months old Angie has her hands full. Angie says, “They are a lovable lot and get along pretty well with each other although sometimes they act all the same whether it’s the teenager or the baby, so I deal with them the same way”. Angie schedules her day so that she distributes her time and attention equally between her family, her career, checking newsfeeds to see what the news of the day is, other south asian outlets besides all this she loves to cook. Married to her best friend Angie says, “You can be as scheduled as possible, organize everything but if you don’t have a spouse that supports you, then forget it. Whenever I am late or need to do some extra work my husband steps right in as long as he knows what’s in the fridge…He is fantastic”. Angie enjoys long distance running and has participated in five marathons including the famous Boston Marathon in 1999. She also jogs with her baby in the jogging stroller when she gets the time.

Whenever she is down she says, “I take a look at where I am today, the ups and downs that I have been through and that’s when I feel thankful for what I have, my husband, my kids, my health, the happy environment at home and my career. Compared to what people are going through out in the world I feel I am blessed.” Her advice to one and all, “The one person who will not let you down is yourself, you will always be there to pick yourself up. That’s also my advice to my daughter who shares a close relationship with me.” Her parents came to Canada in 1971 with a dream to build a solid future for their children and to help those in need. Their hard work

and dedication has always been a driving force in Angie’s pursuit to becoming a journalist. After graduating with an honours degree in Political Science from the University of Toronto, Angie began her journalism career at OMNI Television. She first worked as a reporter and news coordinator for the weekend newscast, South Asian Newsweek. During this time, Angie also produced two of OMNI’s diversity programs. She is the lead news anchor for OMNI News: South Asian Edition. Here she has covered stories on everything from local crime, sports and entertainment, to politics, humanitarian issues and national security. Over the years, Angie has had the opportunity to interview a wide range of

She writes for the Canadian Association of Journalists and is often interviewed by other news agencies, such as the CBC, about various topics of concern to South Asians. Masala of Style

H

armoniously blending influences from inspirations gathered during her extensive travels throughout the East and West, her debut collection is a masala of style from both the Empire State and her Eastern heritage. Born and raised in ‘Steelers nation’, Pittsburgh, Sheena grew up absorbing American passions for hot dogs, contemporary sportswear, and the black and yellow of her local football team. Her mother, who was raised in India, insured the culture was not lost on the future designer, immersing her in Hindi language and more. Inside the Trivedi home, the family greeted one another with namaste and hello. Annual trips to India exposed Sheena to the eclectic mélange of multiculturalism synonymous with the vibrant cities of New Delhi and Mumbai. Her appreciation for the country’s architecture, vibrant colors, flavorful foods and city

26 MARCH / APRIL 2013

streets would go on to shape her personal style. Today, it can be seen in her debut collection.

Sheena began her career as a buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue while honing her skills through classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons The New School for Design. While learning the tastes and proclivities of Manhattan style setters international tastemakers, she began to see a void in the marketplace for clothing that fit her own tastes – the bold embodiment of both ethnicity and sportswear. It was with that in mind that she launched Sheena Trivedi for Spring 2013, a bold women’s wear label that flirts with the tradition of New Delhi and embodies the energy of New York. Designed in New York City and manufactured in India, Sheena Trivedi blends luxurious Indian fabrications and styling with Western silhouettes, creating designs that are sophisticated and daring yet wearable. Jewel-toned silks and handmade brocade are paired with leather jackets and exposed zippers; oversized hoodies and studs dance with georgette and chiffon. Her feminine, exotic collection can be fashioned as complete looks for the luxury label lover or mixed and matched for city chic style.

ABOUT> Ekaterina Kukhareva launched her eponymous knitwear line in 2009 after graduating from Central Saint Martin’s with BA in Textiles in London. Producing unique knitted fabric, this label is known for its luxury hand-made trimmings. A compilation of hand worked macramé, crochet, fringing and knotting which add elaborate glamour to the entire collection and make the timeless pieces stand out. Ekaterina Kukhareva collections are stocked in various countries and aimed at the high end of the luxury market. With gorgeous weaving techniques, unusual shapes, and futuristic patterns, Ekaterina Kukhareva employs both natural fabrics like wool and cotton and synthetic materials like viscose andLurex. The Connection with the contemporary woman of today channels the queens’ characters in Ekaterina’s knits. This way she creates a relationship with the garment and the wearer’s body! The brand’s aim is to create timeless and high quality pieces.

t is all about Fabrics, fabrics, fabrics – Ekaterina remains true to her style in her Spring Summer 2013 Collection. Keeping her muse close to her theme of queens, she drew her inspiration from the 60’s fashion icon Brigitte Bardot and her St.Tropez lifestyle. This muse, who was idolized by the likes of young John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan and the impressive setting of St.Tropez’s luxury holiday feel, is reflected in and translated into Ekaterina’s garments through shapes, texture and colours. Simple shapes and vintage feel of the garments portray the ease with which Brigitte could pull off any look be it on the beach or in the city. The collection consists of beachwear, light dresses, jackets, coats, trousers and matching accessories. The fabrics’ patterns are based on basic geometric shapes, such as hexagrams, mosaics and birds’ wing scales which originate from ancient Egyptian wall paintings. Jacquards, complex Intarsias and basic stripes are used throughout the collection to translate the colourful patterns. Mixes of bright colours as well as different structures are present in the collection, such as ribs, pleats and weaving techniques. The mood of the collection is very happy, care free and sexy, like Brigitte Bardot. MARCH / APRIL 2013 37

he private viewing which was held at New York City's recently renovated premier event space ARENA, located at 135 West 41st Street New York, NY 10018, afforded guests the opportunity to view the brands debut 13-piece capsule collection which was creatively displayed on pewter mannequins in gallery format. During the event, while leading up to the highly anticipated presentation, guests where allowed a behind the scenes glimpse of the creative process that helped shape the collection via a black and white documentary style projected installation. The collection, aptly titled "Sophisticated Edge", took its cue from refined classics while incorporating modern design elements such as supple leathers, novelty knits, engineered fabrics and geometric shapes. A directionally edited interview of Carmencita Whonder, OF WHONDER CEO and Founder, preceded the presentation which in turn set the tone for the brands electrifying unveiling.

Carmencita Whonder, OF WHONDER Chief Executive Officer and Founder, was quoted as saying:

“I could not have imagined a more wonderful debut for both the brand and the collection. The positive energy in the room and support for our concept was palpable. We are excited to take the lead in giving the majority of women access to high quality and high fashion for years to come.” From the eclectic assortment of passed hors d’oeuvres to the sponsored bar and celebrity guest DJ Valissa Yoe, guests were taken on a magic carpet ride of sensual pleasure often evoked by more seasoned fashion houses, and not those marking their debut during New York’s uber competitive Fashion Week. ake up is always about inspiration and creativity. Having done a few shows this season the looks were more subtle and well defined. A great air brushed foundation for great coverage along with eye liner defined eyes and nude or very bold lips were the highlight. My suggestions for spring would definitely be the mac full coverage mineral foundation. Don’t forget to use the appropriate brush to blend it in. Of course air brush is not everyone’s cup of tea so this foundation would make an amazing impression. HD foundations are also recommended. Once the blending is done use a black eye liner or pencil to create the perfect flick and then coat lips with nude shades like mac kind a sexy or velvet teddy. Blusher would be a nice peachy tone to define cheek bones. I would emphasize on highlighting. The Kim kardashian look is highly inspirational. Mally is another brand I have recently discover and it’s products are amazing. They don’t smudge or fade away and stay for longer periods of time. Ideal for long hour shifts where one has no touch up time. So girls its the time of the year when your skin should glow and you should

One of a Kind Ola Vayona Jewelry

58 MARCH / APRIL 2013

B

orn in 1978 in Lodz - an industrial city at the centre of Poland, Ola Vayona says she is blessed to be doing what she loves. The company was born in 2005, with a passion for bringing handcrafted furniture and Jewelery to discerning clients, weary of derivative, mass-produced pieces made of synthetic materials. Striped Flint, the stone of choice for Ola’s Jewelery is found only in one location on earth - on the banks of Vistula River near the medieval fortress city of Sandomierz. This stone combines the elements - air, water and fire, in a unique manner. It resembles the flowing stream of the river in which this precious stone was formed. It pulses with

the life-forces of nature that formed it, and this energy can be felt through scent. The origin of Striped Flint is mysterious. According to the most popular theory, it was formed 150 million years ago as a result of the extinction of the marine sponge colonies which developed in Jurassic sea. Amazing bright and dark streaks were formed around the skeletal remains of the sponges. Another favorite stone Ola works with is Baltic Amber with its many beautiful colors and shades. Ola’s Jewelery is often customized – according to client preferences and is not found anywhere else to ensure the customers have one of a kind pieces. www.olavoyna.com

ART & CULTURE

T

wenty minutes away from that great booming wonder-of-the-world, Niagara Falls, sits the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, population 15,000. A haven of food, wine, history and culture; the flower and tree-lined avenues have served as a getaway destination for regional visitors, in-the-know urbanites and culture-lovers for over a century. Resting quietly on the banks of Lake Ontario, this placid town does not betray its wealth of history and regal grandeur. First settled by Europeans in the late eighteenth-century, the former capital of the Province of Upper Canada has been fought over, invaded, and burned to the ground at various points in its 200-year history. Thanks to a particular combination of astounding natural beauty and strategic positioning, it has driven armies to ruin and is inextricably linked to the history of North America. Life in Niagara-on-the-Lake has been peaceful over the past century, yet the spark of great happenings and visionary personalities still presents itself in a dynamic and influential way. The arrival of the Shaw Festival in 1962 infused the town with a new, exuberant energy and marked the beginning in a new chapter of the town’s long history. The Shaw Festival filled the town with a new sense of purpose, as well as a cultural and economic vitality, which continues today.

78 MARCH / APRIL 2013

Nestled in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake, The Shaw is one of North America’s most celebrated contemporary theatres. Its calendar brims with an eclectic array of smart comedies, bold dramas and sweeping classics representing the best of theatre. For more than fifty seasons audiences have been captivated by provocative, challenging stories told with humanity and wit — and have returned to Niagara-on-the-Lake, year after year. Beginning as an amateur eight-performance summer festival called “Salute to Shaw!” this great cultural event was quickly embraced by the inhabitants of Niagara-onthe-Lake and remains close to the heart of this spirited town. In the five decades that have followed, this amateur “salute” has evolved into a seven-month, internationally renowned, professional theatre festival. Today the Shaw Festival features plays, not only by the acclaimed playwright, reformer, and social critic Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), but playwrights from around the world who also wrote during, or about, the era of Shaw’s lifetime. The Festival showcases the fascinating continuum of provocative and subversive playwriting that includes the work of contemporary “Shavians” and those that write through the distinct Shavian perspective – questioning, disruptive and sharply funny.

The Shaw Festival’s 2013 season showcases a potent and diverse mix of plays from the past and present. The playbill proudly features 10 productions presented on the Festival’s four Niagara-on-the-Lake stages. It includes two spectacular contemporary musicals; the timeless Guys and Dolls and the glorious musical story set in Italy, The Light in the Piazza. Two productions by Bernard Shaw – Major Barbara and Peace in Our Time: A Comedy (the second is a re-envisioning by playwright John Murrell). Also on the playbill, a stylishly sexy and wildly witty play called

Our Betters by W. Somerset Maugham and a Lunchtime of two rare one-act gems called Trifles by Susan Glaspell and Eugene O’Neill. Masterpieces from contemporary playwrights Brian Friel - Faith Healer – and Tom Stoppard – Arcadia – are also featured. The Festival stage also hosts the Oscar Wilde gem Lady Windermere’s Fan and a delightful adventure story called Enchanted April. Impressive too is the list of directors and actors whose work on stage brings these worlds to life. The Shaw is home to one of the finest Acting Ensembles in the Englishspeaking world. Theatre stars such as Jim

Mezon, Patrick Galligan, Corrine Koslo, Josh Young, Nicole Underhay, Elodie Gillett, Kyle Blair, Tara Rosling, Gray Powell and Moya O’Connell to name but a few tread the boards in a least two shows throughout the season which runs from April to October. They are expertly guided by directors such as Jackie Maxwell, Morris Panych and Peter Hinton while the works of celebrated contemporary playwrights such as Adam Guettel, John Murrell and Brian Friel sit comfortably alongside their spirited forefathers in drama such as Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde and Somerset Maugham.

The town of Niagara-on-the-Lake warmly welcomes visitors from across North America and around the world to experience its bountiful orchards, award-winning wineries, fascinating historical sites, and its heart and soul – the Shaw Festival. For those seeking gastronomic gratification, this “culinary capital of Canada” offers an abundance of local produce, world-class wineries, renowned restaurants and foodcentric events. Most of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s wineries offer tours to the public, and some of which have special Niagara-on-the-Lake tour and theatre packages with The Shaw.

“Meri Maa (Vande Mataram) carries the purpose of representing the significance of India, our motherland, to her citizens and to remind and restore the importance of our cultural heritage to Indians settled within India and abroad. We are dedicating this song as a gratitude to how we have been raised with Indian values by our parents and to all those who have inspired us to recognize, realize and represent our heritage. We were greatly inspired by AR Rahman’s “Maa Tujhe Salaam” from his 1997 Vande Mataram album, and with “Meri Maa” we hope to bring back that sense of patriotism to our people” MARCH / APRIL 2013 81

A-List Interiors – Design Duo make their Mark

n just one year A-List Interiors has set themselves apart in the field of interior design, no easy feat in the design Mecca that is New York City. Among the noteworthy projects that A-List Interiors completed in 2012 is a two-story, 2,700-square-foot penthouse apartment in an historic prewar building on the Upper West Side. The design team of Anelle Gandelman and Ariella Duker created A-List Interiors with the mission of bringing their brand of sophisticated, eclectic taste to the world of decorating and design. The pair believes that interior design should be more about revealing their clients’ own personalities rather than foisting a particular style upon them.

84 MARCH / APRIL 2013

Together, Anelle and Ariella bring their complementary skill sets to interior projects both large and small. Leveraging their distinct experiences, educations, industry connections and personal styles, they bring to others their shared passion and skill for making interior spaces undeniably sophisticated and stylish, as well as infinitely warm, comfortable and full of life. “A-List Interiors has quickly become the provocative, innovative and refreshingly unconventional choice for interior design,” said co-founder Anelle Gandelman. “Clients often fear that a designer will dictate their own style, ignoring the needs and wants of the people who will actually live in the space. At A-List Interiors, we have

adopted a collaborative, client-centric approach that we believe empowers truly great design. Likewise, we are excited about being decorators when there is so much innovation in technology and sustainable interior design, giving us a solution to almost any design challenge.”

In a blender or food processor, combine avocado, cilantro, lime juice, mustard, tahini, salt, black pepper, and water and blend until smooth. Slowly add oil and blend until emulsified. Stir in jalapeno, garlic, and chopped cilantro.

Makes 2 cups (500 mL). 1 tbsp refined coconut oil 1 medium onion, chopped ½ tsp salt 3 garlic cloves, smashed ½ habanero pepper, seeded and chopped, or 1 tbsp habanero or Scotch bonnet hot sauce 2 medium carrots, chopped 3 tbsp tamarind paste/ concentrate 1 tbsp agave nectar ¾ cup (185 mL) vegan/vegetable stock (recipe page 45) In a medium pot on medium heat, melt coconut oil. Be careful when blending hot liquids. Store in a well-sealed glass container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

2 tsp refined coconut or grapeseed oil 1 cup thinly sliced onions, sliced lengthwise 1 tsp tamari 1 tsp balsamic vinegar ½ cup (125 mL) julienned smoked tofu 1 cup (250 mL) julienned Granny Smith apple 15 vegan spring roll wrappers vegetable oil, enough to cover bottom of pot or deep fryer, at least 2½-in (6.5-cm) deep In a frying pan on medium heat, melt oil. DENTIST

Behavioral Management

“Phobias Fears and Unfavorable Experiences” By Dr. Ramit Joshi

T

here is a lot of hype before dental appointments, which is created by family and friends, especially on how their dentists will use the “drill”, “shot” & cause them large amounts of pain while pulling teeth out of the jaw without numbing their mouth. These fears in addition to the dental tools used at the office, are often used as a scare tactic by parents towards their kids, when they are misbehaving at home. This has resulted in more scared patients and a lot of bad public relations for dentistry, which contributes to the phobias, fears and results in unfavorable experiences at the dental office. Even though the treatment options vary, being able to perform and provide care in a safe and relaxed environment will depend on many factors during one’s appointment. There are many behavioral management techniques used by general and pediatric dentists to show their patients the rewarding side of getting dental work done and prove that it can also be a harmless, fun and enjoyable visit.

Behavior guidance techniques advocated by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry include: n Proper means of age-appropriate communication & patient/parent education on the treatment visit and all of that should be performed for the patient by coming at their level with communication, avoiding fearful language. n “Tell-Show-Do” for the child so that they can see and understand in simple terms what they are to expect and how it is something that is routine and harmless. n Pain control is important so proper 92 MARCH / APRIL 2013

anesthesia and pain free environment should be created. If this is deficient in any way in an already stressful situation then the appointment can end on a very disruptive note. n Distraction and keeping any sharp instruments hidden from plain sight, talking to the patients about other relaxing experiences, keeping their mind off the treatment can help speed up the treatment being rendered. n Positive reinforcement for good listeners so that they know if they follow, there would be a reward waiting for them for their patience after the procedure. n Parent Involvement/Absence in the treatment room during the procedure can also help, if a parent is more fearful than the child than it is better to keep the parent away from the treatment area. n Nitrous oxide/oxygeninhalation sedation is a safe and effective technique to reduce anxiety. Its onset is rapid, the depth is easily titrated and reversible, and recovery is rapid. Use of Protective Stabilization in Dentistry Advanced Behavior Guidance Techniques available to us are protective stabilization or the papoose board and is also called medical

immobilization. There have been many misconceptions on its use and its overuse in the media due to the feeling of helplessness and restraining the child. This stabilization technique is used when other techniques are insufficient, especially when patients require immediate and quick evaluation and treatment. It is also beneficial in children having special health care needs or when a child cannot cooperate with the dental team or may not understand the treatment due to their age or compliance. The purpose of protective stabilization is to ensure the safety of the child, and the dental staff. A papoose board is a cushioned board with fabric velcro straps that can be wrapped around the child to limit movement to complete a necessary medical procedure without damaging the oral structures, as accidents can occur during movement of the patient especially when sharp instruments and dental hand pieces are being used.

ABOUT DR. RAMIT JOSHI Hey fashion and dental enthusiasts, Dr. Ramit Joshi your seasoned Dentist, grew up in United Arab Emirates and graduated with a Doctor in Dental Surgery in 2003, Since then has stayed connected in his profession with Advanced Training in General Dentistry at Marquette University School of Dentistry in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and General Dentistry Residency at Boston University Henry Goldman School of Dental Medicine Post Doctoral Program from Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Ramit Joshi

Held Lead Dentist position handling Pediatric needs for patients below 21 years of age as well as managing the functioning of busy dental practices and providing clinical care to offices in Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus Ohio. Currently practicing Cosmetic and Family Comprehensive Dental care incorporating his years of experience in both Adult and Pediatric Dentistry.

Photo: Stone-Bridge.co.uk

Due to the child’s movement during dental treatment there can be an injury to both the child and medical provider. Hence, the papoose board safely limits these movements and it is widely preferable to medical sedation, which can have additional risks. As a result, this method of behavior management is preferred by many parents and providers as an alternative to sedation. It is also very important to note that protective stabilization is only used after other behavior management techniques have proven ineffective, and only with the informed written consent of the parent with limited use, it is not used just for convenience of getting the procedure done quickly or if it is requested by the parent, but the medical necessity must outweigh the need and hence its usage. Stabilization is contraindicated for cooperative patients or those with physical conditions preventing its usage, patients who have experienced previous physical or psychological trauma from protective stabilization should be referred for alternative modalities like sedation or general anesthesia and any treatment requiring lengthy appointments it is also not recommended to use the stabilization. Hence even though it can be considered a harsh method to provide care by wrapping up the child, the complete understanding of its advantages and when to use it will eliminate any misconceptions on the usage of stabilization. It is still recommended by the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry if the need is justified by a pediatric or trained general dentist.
