Transcendence by Haasya Chandna

ashion is an ever evolving industry where new trends are born by the minute! Indian designers have come a long way with their vibrant designs catering to prêt and couture lines! In spite of such competition, designer Haasya Chandna decided to take a chance in this market and has come through as a designer known for her different styles and designs, thus establishing a name on the fashion horizon of India with the brand name Kazamiir. It’s time for fashionistas of the country to sit back and watch as here comes the fashion designer of gen now Haasya Chandna. At the age of 25 years this young talented woman has to her credit celebrity clientele namely celebrities like Preity Zinta, Sophie Chaudhry, Kareena Kapoor, Tulip Joshi, Ameesha Patel, Neetu Chandra, Aushima Swahney to name a few. She has also styled Kulraj Randhawa, the leading actress ofYamla Pagla Deewana who was also her Show stopper at the Bangalore Fashion Week. Haasya graduated after three years of an eventful and exciting learning experience from the London College of Fashion, UK. After fully exploring the scene here in India, she decided to launch her own line ‘Kazamiir’ of women’s wear specializing in western outfits, from evening gowns to cocktail dresses. Her collection is a mélange of class and flamboyance that is juxtaposed to create elegant garments that spell feminity and sophistication with acute antenna of shine and shimmer. She has designed a collection for the 2009 Miss India contestants and Evening Gown collection, the Gitanjali Show and

for a fashion sequence in Karan Johar’s film with Kareena and Kajol “We Are Family”. The latest addition to her kitty was that she opened the Blenders Pride Bangalore Fashion Week with her newest collection ‘Transcendence’ and received an outstanding response. Haasya’s collection ‘Transcendence’ means the creation of beauty from abstract into concrete forms. Transcendence is her inspiration from art that starts off with a blank canvas which is then splashed with colors making it an abstract form of art. Haasya has decided to take us through the journey of this transformation in a rewind mode meaning her collection begins with abstract prints which then leads onto solid colors. This collection is divided into a three series color palette, ranging from vibrant yellows to tangerines, eclectic blues, greens toned to beiges, greys tantalizing reds, greens and black in order to capture and display the entire mood of this abstract transformation. While the fabric, silk satin is carefully chosen she has used embellishments like the mother of pearl, metal belts and appliques which are embraced into forms of short dresses and gowns with various drapes. The collection mainly consists of stylish, well cut international designs for women some in prints as well as solids. Haasya believes her designs cater to the real women of today, someone who is ready to take on the world in a new bold and classy avatar, a woman who knows her mind and has the confidence to make a style statement and be a head turner! Considering this was her first stint at the fashion week, she has come through with classy red carpet designer dresses.

K
alista Zackhariyas was born in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, but spent a large part of her childhood and adolescent years living in South Africa and Europe. Kalista and the Zackhariyas family now live in Mississauga, Ontario. Kalista formed a deep love for the performing arts at five years old when she started learning Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form originating in Tamil Nadu, India. She later expanded her dance repertoire, studying other forms of dance such as, contemporary and hip hop and later moved into choreography. A tumultuous home life left Kalista on her own at a very early age. At the age of 13, Kalista was going to school fulltime and working a couple of part time jobs to support herself. Travelling extensively, Kalista lived in Europe for a few years. She has briefly co-hosted a morning talk show and even worked as a cover model for the Slovenian magazine “MAG. Although, she took on occasional performances and small roles, Kalista for the most part stepped away from the entertainment industry to get married, build a career as a designer and raise her two children. Less than two years in to her abusive marriage, Kalista filed for divorce and embarked on a journey that has not only changed her life but it has given her the desire to fulfill her every dream and live with purpose. Kalista has been a Martial Artist, studying Taekwondo and Hapkido since 2002. This skill has led to her participation on several stunt teams for film and television. In 2003, Kalista participated in the Miss Canada pageant and won the title of Miss Vaughan. In 2009, Kalista could no longer resist her true love of the arts and made the bold decision to return to the industry. Having experienced many areas of the arts, she decided to pursue film and
television. She has incorporated her pastime love of writing into a screenplay and has begun pre-production on her first short film. Almost a decade later, Kalista embraced the stage yet again, performing at the Annual Sexual Assault and Rape Crisis Centre Fundraising Gala. Passionate about supporting youth programs and women’s shelters, Kalista is developing a foundation that is dedicated towards giving women and children surviving abuse a stable beginning to rebuild themselves. Over the years, Kalista Zackhariyas has graced the cover of magazines, hosted a
talk show, and been interviewed by countless publications and news media both in Canada and internationally. Kalista Zackhariyas is an Actor, Writer, Mother, and aspiring film maker. While managing a full-time business and furthering her training as an Actor, Kalista has filmed over a dozen commercials, several short films, been a print model and has landed her first lead role in the feature film Snow. Bursts of Colours
S
pring brings a burst of colours in nature, which is reflected in fashion apparel and accessories. With nature at its full bloom comes a penchant for all things natural. The rule of thumb I follow every spring regardless of any new spring trends is accessorize with fashion jewelry that resonates the spirit of nature. Bright colours and natural materials are always in vogue every spring. This year is no exception. Bangle Bracelets that are bright in color or have a floral pattern become very popular during spring. Bangle Bracelets accentuates long slim arms. Mix and match 2 to 3 different colours and wear them together for a startling effect. Fashion Cuffs in bright colours and metals are the rage of fashion runways. They look smashing with any outfit. They are perfect for a day at the beach or a night in town. Armlets are always in style in spring. But they are not for everyone. It can make short arms look even shorter but can do wonders for long arms. Fashion Armlets create a very sultry look.

Dangle Earrings are always the craze this season. They attract instant attention to your face and neck, no matter their size, shape or colour. Wear them with confidence. Don’t forget those alluring anklets that add a lot of appeal to your legs. Choose from simple sterling silver chains to pearls or charms dangling from the anklet chain. Bohemian style jewelry represents lot of characters of nature. Floral patterns and bright colours are mostly found in Bohemian jewelry. This style captures the fun and free spirit of nature. Natural materials like wood compliments all spring outfits. Wooden jewelry makes you feel close to Mother Nature. In conclusion follow your free spirit when accessorizing with fashion jewelry in spring.

Shereen A Combination of Urban and South Asian

hen you normally think about Indian dancers, you think of Mumbai, Film City, and the far away world of Bollywood in India. That’s what makes Shereen Ladha, Toronto and Montreal-based professional Bollywood dancer, so unique. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Shereen has found an area of the South Asian Arts that isn’t being showcased on such a highly professional level. Shereen started training at the age of four in the disciplines of Ballet, Jazz, and Classical Indian dance. After dancing jazz competitively she found herself at a crossroads – to continue in the jazz discipline would mean giving up a considerable amount of time to train in South Asian styles. Her love for all things Bollywood eventually won when she was scouted by renowned Bollywood choreographer, Divya Kumar, at the age of fifteen to join in troupe. Shereen has danced for stars like Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal, Lara Dutta, and Neha Dhupia, and for artists like RDB, Jazzy B, Sukshinder Shinda, Raghav, and many more. Because of her extensive training in many disciplines, Shereen is able to pick up the “new Bollywood” style quite easily. “New Bollywood incorporates some pretty technical elements of dance not previously seen in these songs, like pirouettes and high kicks. A certain degree of flexibility and endurance is definitely needed,

and that’s where it helps to have been trained in other forms of dance,” she says. Her style of dance is definitely not going unnoticed. Just last year, ‘So You Think You Can Dance Canada’ choreographer and judge, Tre Armstrong, saw Shereen dance and contacted her to assist in an IndoCanadian film she was working on. She ended up casting Shereen in the dance sequence as well. “She said she liked how my style was a combination of Urban and South Asian. It was a great compliment, and so refreshing to be recognized from someone as established and talented as Tre,” she says. Shereen has branched out in the dance work she does, and has begun choreographing dance sequences for live shows and music videos for South Asian artists. She was recently hired by upcoming urban sensations Sinister and King Roti to choreograph the dance break for their new music video “Braggin.”

ikas Kohli of FatLabs will be celebrating plenty this month as he collects his 2nd award within 9 days. On Friday April 1st, he became the first composer to receive the prestigious Voice Achievers Award in Entertainment. And on Sunday April 10, he became the first composer to receive the coveted Trailblazer Award from the ReelWorld Film Festival.
86 MAY / JUNE 2011
“I feel winning the Voice Achievers Award was a tail-end probability. And winning a Trailblazer Award was also a tail-end probability. Getting both is anomalous. Who knew that listening to the Sex Pistols and Metallica when I was 13 years old would eventually pay off?” jests Kohli. However, betting on the pay-off of probabilities isn’t a stretch for this mathematician turned musician. Seven years before starting his music production company, FatLabs, Kohli was

Now fully invested in creating music, Kohli has composed and produced numerous award-winning projects in North America, Europe and India. Both of these awards recognize these accomplishments. In 2008, Kohli was the first Canadian to have one of his song productions performed live at the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) awards; which is the Bollywood

equivalent to the Oscars. In 2008 & 2006 Kohli produced albums for The Responsibles which charted across Canada and were nominated for awards. In 2010, three films Kohli composed for (“I Do. Do I?”, “Shanti Baba Ram and the Dancers of Hope”, and “The Bee”) all won awards at various festivals. In 2010, Kohli co-wrote and produced “Did You Think” by Jennifer Abadesso f/ Moka Only, which hit #1 on Radio Alpha 98.6FM Paris, France and charted in several other European countries. TheVoice Acheivers Awards were initiated to identify, recognize and honor distinguished members of the South Asian Community in Canada who have – with dedication, persistence and focus – become successful in their fields. Held as an annual black-tie gala, the event strives to increase the awareness amongst new immigrants about successful South Asians. Created in 2002, the Trailblazer Award recognizes the accomplishments
of ethnically diverse Canadian film industry professionals whose work has broadened our horizons. For the past ten years ReelWorld has recognized some of Canada’s brightest talents for their ability to bring innovative stories to the silver screen and to forge a bright future for the Canadian film industry. About Vikas Kohli Now a sought-after composer and music producer, Kohli is known internationally for his expertise at fusing together genres as varied as punk, hip-hop and Bollywood pop. Kohli has been profiled on CBC, The Globe & Mail, The Toronto Star, The Hindustan Times, MSN, AOL, Yahoo, and Zee News. Born in Nepean (Ottawa), Kohli began playing guitar and painting at fine arts school before receiving his Honors Degree in Mathematics & Philosophy from the University of Toronto, his MBA from the Schulich School of Business and his CFA. International recording artist’s CD cover inspired by legendary US makeup artist Kevin Aucoin Toronto, ON - Montreal born recording artist Prita Chhabra has released the cover of her highly anticipated single “Roots”, available on iTunes May 1st timed with the start of South Asian Heritage Month in Canada. While seeming to be a depiction of Prita’s Canadian and South Asian fashion influences at first glance, Prita’s “Roots” cover is more so an artistic statement for the singer/songwriter, who often feels torn between her Canadian and South Asian audiences. Reflected in the lyrics of her “Roots” single, Prita describes both the joys and struggles of being raised in Canada while having cultural roots in another country (in Prita’s case, India). Conceptualized by Prita and brought to life by Canada’s acclaimed GLOW Academy School of Professional Artistic Beauty, Prita drew inspiration for her “Roots” CD cover paying tribute to one of her favorite artistic images from the past decade - “Face Forward”, a best-selling book published 11 years ago by late celebrity makeup artist Kevin Aucoin. Several editions of the accompanying “Roots” music video will also be released on Prita’s YouTube channel beginning on May 1st and continuing throughout the month, with an announcement of the exclusive Canadian premiere of the video’s first edition set for later this week. The world premiere of Prita’s “Roots” video took place February 20th at the 2nd annual Tampa India International Film Festival. Prita’s recent tour dates have included performing for over 10,000 people at the 8th annual West Palm Beach Indiafest; being featured at the 10th annual Florida Music Festival in Orlando; and appearing as the keynote speaker at E.C. Drury high school in Milton (Ontario) for a multicultural awareness fundraiser.

T
he return of the Shaw Ensemble and the start of rehearsals herald the much anticipated start of The Shaw’s historic 50th season. The podium and elocution slide is set for professor and pupil to begin rehearsals today for the Alan Jay Lerner/ Frederick Loewe musical My Fair Lady. The well-loved musical is scheduled to have its first preview performance in the Festival Theatre on April 13. “It gives me great pleasure to warmly welcome both new and familiar friends arriving for this momentous season.” remarked Artistic Director Jackie Maxwell. My Fair Lady is the top selling musical of the last five seasons, with an incredibly strong response from both the family market and by patrons in the 19-29 demographic. Over the next few weeks, rehearsals for Bernard Shaw’s Candida and Heartbreak House; Lennox Robinson’s Drama at Inish – A Comedy and Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof will also commence in preparation for preview performances in April and May. “As the Company embarks on our milestone 50th season, we are elated by the response we’ve received from our audiences; with some spring performances already sold-out,” commented Colleen Blake, Executive Director. The continued draw of the Shaw Festival for both Canadian and American tourists translates into a $75 million economic impact to the

Niagara region, confirming that The Shaw continues to be a significant regional economic partner. Long before the actors arrived onsite, a host of builders in the sets and props areas, along with painters and wardrobe personnel have been working diligently behind the scenes to prepare for the season. In September, before the public have even learned what the upcoming season would feature, the Set Construction shop was gearing up in their state-of-the-art facility in nearby Virgil, ON. After meetings with designers, the crews work begins to bring life to the technical drawings presented to them. In the case of My Fair Lady, the set construction crews were first presented the plans for this elaborate design by Ken Macdonald on his newly purchased IPad! Having this 3D reference was a great opportunity for the teams to see what the designer had envisioned for this iconic
build. The 50th Season also marks the return of designer Leslie Frankish who will design sets and costumes for Heartbreak House. A long-time fixture at The Shaw in the 90’s, Leslie has been pursuing design work outside of Ontario – most recently with the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games in British Columbia. Shortly after the Set Construction crew began, the Scenic Art team took those set pieces to a whole new level and applied their magic to what the builders laid before them. Both Ken and Leslie’s designs presented some interesting challenges for our builders and painters, however those challenges have more than been met and the sets for both My Fair Lady and Heartbreak House are anxiously waiting in the wings of the Festival Theatre standing by for their cue to ‘go’! In the late fall, our Props department began working on the elaborate pieces that adorn the sets – everything from

chairs, curtains and massive globe like structures. There’s even a giant timepiece that must function on-stage during Heartbreak House. The work from this shop is so convincingly authentic that patrons have been known to mistake these fabulous fakes for the real thing and marvel at their authenticity! And last, but not least, to start working behind-the-scenes is the superbly talented Wardrobe Department. This extraordinary group of cutters, seamstresses and sewers manage to transform yards of fabric into some of the most exquisite costumes ever seen on stage. Now that the actors have entered the building, fittings will be scheduled to put the finishes touches

It helps to work with a listing agent who knows the local market intimately – a trustworthy Neighborhood Realtor® you can rely on to provide you with accurate pricing information. The way to ensure that you get maximum price for your home is to be sure it receives extensive market exposure and not just through the Multiple Listing Service. With technology and business models evolving there is more emphasis on web sites and internet promotion such as

reparing a home for the market sets the stage for the entire marketing effort, as homes that show well – are shown more often. When both Realtor® and potential buyers are enthusiastic about a home, it is more likely to receive a good offer. Preparing a home for sale need not be an ordeal. However, it helps to give oneself plenty of time so that there is no pressure to get work done in a short time frame. Meeting with your Realtor® and walking through your home together is a key factor. A home should not be open to prospective buyers or even other Realtors® until all the fix-upfor-sale work has been completed, as first impressions are lasting. Listed properties that do not sell are often priced too high for the market. A property is most saleable when it is new on the market. Realtors® and their buyers are eager to see new listings. Therefore, it is important to make the most of your “new listing”

Horizon Night Light For nearly two decades the Grays have operated a family run studio selling the art they create. Recently, they’ve decided to focus on ecological awareness and we were captivated by the simple beauty of this nightlight, created entirely from fused glass recycledfrom bottles and containers. They call this project reborn glass and we think they've fulfilled their motto brilliantly: “a trash to treasure artistic endeavor.”

This Buddha face, with its gently closed eyes and expressive lips, is skillfully and delicately etched in three joining panels of sustainable monkey pod wood. The contrasting grain adds lustrous highlights. Hung with the embedded hooks or propped against a wall on a shelf or table, the Buddha's radiant beauty transforms living spaces into calming sanctuaries.
Woven Reed Table For thousands of years, Mayan villagers living near Guatemala's Lake Atitlan have been weaving thick reed sleeping mats from dense shoreline rushes. Twenty years ago, artisan Gregorio Perez began creating threedimensional objects from these chunky reeds - beginning with this versatile outdoor furnishing that converts from sturdy stool to roomy side table. your ABCs?... Sounds like trouble!

on’t get fooled, it’s not your conventional English lesson – But majority of our denture patients have to go through this dilemma, as a means to help adjust and adapt to their removable prosthesis. Multiple missing teeth require intervention where we can provide the functional chewing ability, esthetically pleasing options and maintain health by bringing the patient closer to satisfying their oral needs. Full dentures provide the conventional replacement of all missing teeth – however using implants to support a denture or using a root canalled tooth for support which is called an overdenture is routinely practiced. Having this added support goes a long way with retaining dentures and helps in withstanding the chewing forces. The bone resorption process which is consistent gets reduced around the roots and anchors, hence prolonging the life of the bony ridge. Partial dentures do also provide good options so as to replace a few missing teeth with help of the remaining natural teeth and the ridge. Having this treatment route keeps the patient’s own proprioception sensation intact so they can feel, control their chewing and this gives an ability to use the natural teeth as long as possible which will directly maintain the bony support. The adaptation can be easier for partials denture wearers making it

easier to get used to a removable prosthesis and also transition into a complete denture, if it would be needed down the road. Along with changes in adaption and function many patients undergo speech related hurdles along the adjustment phase, changes in how we perceive our voice due to wearing of dentures which does have to cover the palate. Potential aids to speech improvement are a “non-anatomic papilla” placed on the oral surface of the denture just, a transversely elongated pattern at about the same location, this area is normally present on our palate and is felt like corrugated area called a “rugae”. Changes in Size and Shape of teeth, being too far from patient’s natural teeth can result in making adaptation more time consuming and sometimes difficult. Removable Dentures being a foreign object that they are will cause the mouth to salivate excessively which can also cause speech related problems as in mumbling and lisping, the use of lozenges or candy to suck on does limit this excessive salivation and will promote its swallowing. Sometimes the movement of dentures will also cause speech related changes and by using a denture adhesives for additional hold it prevents this unexpected loosening, brings that extra confidence towards the artificial denture teeth just by their staying in.
Practice your speech by reading aloud and repeat words that you frequently have trouble pronouncing eventually the tongue, lips and cheeks will become accustomed to the slight alteration in the shape of the mouth. Reading aloud to yourself is an excellent exercise which will more quickly restore your normal speech. Eventually with time denture will feel natural and speech will return to

FOOD
KHAN (Also known as Pittod in Ingredients 3/4 cup besan (Bengal gram flour) 3/4 cup curds (dahi) 2 tsp ginger-green chilli paste 1/4 tsp turmeric powder (haldi) A pinch of asafoetida (hing) salt to taste For the garnish 2 tbsp grated coconut (optional) 2 tbsp chopped coriander (dhania)
CABBAGE RICE Ingredients 2 cups rice 1 small cabbage thinly sliced 1 & 1/2 tbsp coriander seeds 1 tbsp channa dal 1 tbsp + 1 tsp urad dal 2 red chilies or per taste 1 tsp canola or vegetable oil 1 tsp sesame seed oil 1 tsp mustard seeds some curry leaves 1 medium size onion finely chopped 2 cloves of garlic minced Salt to taste Method
In a skillet, toast coriander seeds, channa dal, 1 tbsp urad dal, red chilies until golden brown and the spices release their aroma. Using a spice grinder or coffee grinder, powder the toasted spices. Keep aside. Cook rice separately and let it cool. Heat oil in a large skillet, add mustard seeds & let it splutter. Now add the remaining urad dal, curry leaves. Once the urad dal has turned golden brown, add onions and sautĂŠ until translucent, then add the garlic. 102 MAY / JUNE 2011
Now add the cabbage and cook until done. Add this mixture to the cooked rice and also the ground spices, and mix thoroughly. Serve hot with a side of papad or as is. Tastes fantastic. TIP: Make this spice powder and store it in the refrigerator. It can be used in vegetables as well as rice dishes.
For the tempering 1 tsp mustard seeds (rai/sarson) 1 tsp sesame seeds (til) (optional) 1 tsp oil Method
Mix together the gram flour, curds, green chilli-ginger paste, turmeric powder, asafoetida and salt with 1 cup of water and make a smooth paste. Transfer into a non-stick pan and heat on a low flame, stirring constantly so that lumps do not form. Keep stirring till the batter becomes thick. Taste the batter to see if the gram flour is cooked. This will take about 7 to 10 minutes.
NDVI Grease the reverse side of 3 or 4 thalis and spread the mixture as thinly as possible with your hands or a rubber spatula on the greased surface while the batter is still hot. The number of thalis you will need depend upon on how thinly you can spread the batter. When you have finished spreading the batter on the last thalis, go abck to the first one you spread the batter on and roll up carefully like a Swiss roll. Repeat with the other thalis. Cut 25 mm. (1") pieces out of each big roll to get bite-sized khandvis. Place these on a serving dish. To prepare the tempering, heat the oil and add the mustard seeds, sesame seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and red chillies and stir for 30 seconds. Pour over the khandvis and serve garnished with the coriander.
