rom a young age, Roohi looked up to her mother for fashion within the South Asian cultures. With that being said Roohi started out at home pursuing a long time passion for fashion as a hobby and after 5 successful years – she is now expanding and opening up her first retail location.

At Sequence by Roohi – her designs are very simple, classy, sophisticated and above all very wearable. A combination of cuts and embroidery gives you the glamorous look yet comfortable to wear. The most important touch to a piece of clothing – is the finishing, and that is what she focuses on, making every item fit a woman’s figure gracefully. South Asian wear has vivid embroidery, style, elegance and a concept that accentuates every individual unique figure. Roohi takes pride in her selection, therefore never compromising the quality of fabrics, elaborate work and stitching. At Sequence by Roohi you will find a varied selection of South Asian Women’s Wear, Embroidered Dresses, Shalwar Kameez, South Asian Bridal Dresses, and Wedding Dresses. Also

MEN’S Clothes don’t make the man; the man makes the clothes. There is perhaps no greater example of this truth than the Levi’s® Men’s Collection. For nearly 140 years, for the man who not only makes the clothes, but for the man who makes himself. The details tell the story in the new Levi’s® men’s look this season. Our clothes reflect both the refined and rugged sensibilities of today’s man and are tailored to perfection for the man who is precisely measured. For the designers at the Levi’s® brand, craft is of utmost importance, whether referring to the newly refined attention to the taper of the leg or the timeless, durable nature of our shirting and outerwear. We’ve infused a premium feel into our clothes through details like purposeful use of color and unique stitching. These design principles have been followed with the young and hungry in mind. Therefore, the clothes are made of superior material, just like the people they are made for.

WOMEN’S A woman expresses so much through her wardrobe. But she should never be defined by it. There is something particularly beautiful about the moment a woman finds the right outfit that captures exactly how she feels in that moment. We want to offer clothes that speak to women as well as let women speak to the rest of the world, no matter what they want to say. The designers at Levi Strauss & Co. have achieved, through their Women’s Collection, garments that tastefully nod to the idea of femininity but thoughtfully leave it for interpretation. Beautifully crafted dresses, the most innovative collection of women’s jeans brought to life in the Levi’s® Curve ID system, and classically shaped tops mean the Levi’s® brand has given women the freedom to define beauty. Levi’s® innovation through shape and the articulation of feminine style allow every woman to make a statement on her terms. MAY / JUNE 2012 71

It’s not every day that a composer gets to hear a score they’ve written being played by a live orchestra due to the coordination, studio space and budgets required. On February 5th, 28 classically trained musicians gathered in CBC’s Glenn Gould Studio to record a score that Kohli had written. “It’s mighty cool to hear an orchestra record something I’ve written. Thanks to the Screen Composers Guild of Canada for making this happen with the Canadian Film Centre and the Glenn Gould School,” Kohli commented; adding “The director, Samuel, had a clear vision of what we needed to do to support the film and it was great to draw upon fellow composers Christian Floisand, Tristan Capacchione, and Darren Fung to get the end result as well as have Josh Tidsbury doing the beautiful surround mix.” Kohli scored the music to the film called Wild Goose Daddy, directed by filmmaker Samuel Kiehoon Lee, who is

Niagara-on-the-Lake Casts a Spell on Visitors

wenty minutes away from that great booming wonder-of-theworld, Niagara Falls, sits the historic town of Niagara-on-theLake, population 15,000. A haven of food, wine, history and culture, its tree-lined avenues have served as a getaway destination for visitors from the region, in-the-know urbanites and culture-lovers for over a century. Resting quietly on the banks of Lake Ontario, this placid town does not at first betray its wealth of history and regal grandeur. First settled by Europeans in the late eighteenth-century, this former capital of the Province of Upper Canada has been fought over, invaded, and burned to the ground at various points in its 200-year history. Thanks to a particular combination of astounding natural

beauty and strategic positioning, it has driven armies to ruin and is inextricably linked to the history of North America. Originally established by the French as part of a portage route around Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake was captured by the British in 1759. Twenty years later at the outbreak of the American Revolution, it became a haven for the United Empire Loyalists – displaced American refugees who were loyal to King and country. Renamed “Newark” in 1792 by Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe, Niagaraon-the-Lake became the first capital of Upper Canada and one of the largest communities in country that boasted a thriving ship building industry, and Canada’s first newspaper, agricultural society, public library and legislature.

In 1812, war broke out. The American army invaded and occupied the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake for seven months before British forces forced their retreat. The American army had intended to use the town as a springboard to capturing the entire province – but they never made it far and were repeatedly repelled by British forces. In a final act of defiance, the Americans burned the town to the ground as they left, forcing residents out of their homes in the middle of a great winter storm. Determined to remain on the site of their beloved town, the people of Niagara-on-the-Lake rebuilt their home. From the ashes of the old buildings emerged stunning examples of Victorian, Regency and Edwardian architecture that remain proud reminders of the townspeople’s efforts.

“What, When and How Much to Feed my Baby???”

Progression of your Baby’s Diet Dr. Ramit Joshi. DDS & Dr. Neha Sood. MD

T

hanks to information provided in collaboration with Dr. Neha Sood MD Family Practice 3rd year at Grant Hospital Columbus Ohio we can get a run down on important things to consider when feeding your newborn baby. Lets ask ourselves these questions and lets see why they may be so important to consider in our babies wellbeing.

100 MAY / JUNE 2012

How many bowel movements is your baby having each 24 hour period? n What color is your baby’s stool by 6 days of age? n What does your baby weigh at 5 to 7 days of age and at 2 to 3 weeks of age? n How many wet diapers is your baby having in a day? n How many times is the baby feeding? n

Baby’s bowel movements will change as the baby gets older. The first bowel movement which is within the first 24 hours is called the sticky greenish black meconium. In 2-3 days as baby begins to digest breast milk or formula, bowel movements turn greenish-brown. After this, the stool may turn a light yellow, mustard color. Breast milk

stool is watery and mustard color. Formula stool is more formed and yellow in color. By Day 4, look for three to four bowel movements in a 24 hour period. This pattern will continue for the 1st month. After that the stool may be less often and sometimes several days between large soft stools. Wet diapers will help you determine if your newborn is getting enough fluid and remaining well hydrated. Baby’s urine should be a pale yellow color. Rule of thumb for parents is that for the first 5 days, wet diapers are equal to baby’s age in days. 5-6 wet diapers after that for several months. Breast Fed Infants. If you are breast feeding your baby, you should try to nurse within an hour after birth and every 2-3 hours while awake or 8-12 times a day. It is advised to allow suckling at both breasts - 5-20 minutes per breast. Periods of increased feeding frequency may occur at or near 10 days, 1 month and 3 months of life. Vitamin D supplement for all infants who are breast fed is necessary as well. Weight Gain should be about 15 to 30 kg per day for first 6 months and average weight is approximately 3.5 kg to 7.5 kg. Breast fed infants usually gain weight more slowly than formula fed infants. Formula Fed Infants. These are available in 3 forms- ready to feed liquid, concentrated liquid and powder. Concentrated liquid should be mixed with an equal volume of water whereas powdered should be prepared according to directions. All are otherwise identical in terms of their nutrition. The feedings vary usually on demand by the infant. After 1st week, most infants will demand 6 to 9 feedings per day. Some will be satisfied with feedings

every 3-4 hours and others will require every 2 to 3 hours. Most infants require feedings throughout the day and night although some may not awaken for the middle of the night feed. As you introduce solid foods in their diet, they start sleeping more through the night. There are different types of formulas that are available as listed below. n Conventional Cow’s Milk Formula n Partial Whey Hydrolysate Formulas n Extensively Hydrolyzed Whey or Casein Based Formula n Soy Protein Based Formula n Amino acid Based Formula The primary indication of use of extensively hydrolyzed or amino acid based formula is an infant with protein intolerance or food allergy or at high risk of developing an allergy. Discuss with your pediatrician prior to changing your baby’s formula. When should one introduce solid foods? At least 4 months of age - don’t wait any longer than 6 months of age. There are disadvantages of feeding early and feeding late. By 4 months of age, most infants have doubled their birth weight. Between 4 and 6 months, complementary foods become necessary to support growth, satisfy hunger and supplement energy and nutrient needs. Note that after 6 months, breast milk is not enough to meet infant’s requirements. Exclusive breastfeeding is preferred until 6 months of Age only. As solid foods are introduced; infants should not consume more than 28-32 ounces of formula or human milk per day. Single ingredient foods should be introduced first- infant cereals and pureed meats be offered because they provide zinc and iron (nutrients most

likely to be deficient in the diets of infants in the US). Pureed meats increase the absorption of non-heme iron. Once these foods are accepted, pureed fruits and vegetables may be added. At least one feeding per day should be food with vitamin C to promote iron absorption any addition of salt and sugar is discouraged. Single grain infant cereals are good choices for the first supplemental food because they supply additional energy, zinc and iron. Fluoride for Babies. It is Important to prevent tooth decay. Level should be greater than 0.7 ppm Fluoride should begin when child is 6 months of age. Ready to feed infant formula does not have fluoride. Breast fed infants should have fluoride supplementation at 6 months of age. Foods to Avoid in first 12 months due to high fat and sugar content. n Mixed Dinners n Bacon, Lunch Meats, Hot Dogs n French Fries n Creamed Vegetables n Puddings n Cookies, Candy, Cakes n Sweetened Drinks Foods to avoid that can cause choking. n Hot Dogs n Peanut Butter n Whole Grapes n Berries n Nuts n Raisins n Hard Candies n Popcorn With this background information always revert back to your pediatrician for your babies’wellbeing and general health related questions. olon cancer is the second leading cause of both male and female cancer-related deaths in Canada. In 2011 over 22,200 Canadians were diagnosed with colon cancer. Polenta Sandwiches Ingredients: 2 tablespoons butter, at room temperature 1/2 cup quick-cooking polenta 1/2 cup thawed spinach or 3 cups fresh spinach 1 tbsp chopped fresh Italian parsley leaves Pesto Sauce Sun dried tomato pesto or pasta sauce Roasted Red bell pepper in the jar 1 tsp olive oil 1 clove of garlic crushed Salt per taste Directions:

Bring about 2 cups of water, 1 tbsp butter, and some salt as per taste to a boil in a heavy saucepan. Gradually whisk in the polenta. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Stir constantly until the polenta thickens for about 5 minutes. Now, pour the cooked polenta into a greased 9 by 9-inch baking pan, spreading so that it is 1/3-inch thick. Cover and let stand at room temperature until set for about 15 minutes. Cut the polenta into small squares as you desire. Arrange the polenta squares on a platter. Heat olive oil in a pan, add garlic, then the spinach, sprinkle a little water and let it cook for about 3 – 5 mins until wilted. Add some salt and pepper and check for seasonings. Keep it aside to cool. Now

spread some pesto sauce on the polenta square, arrange a piece of roasted red bell pepper, then some spinach. Spread some sun-dried tomato pesto or pasta sauce on another polenta square and cover the spinach with this other polenta square like a sandwich, sprinkle with parsley. Enjoy with a side of fresh crisp salad. NOTE: Make sure to squeeze all the water if frozen spinach is used. To make your own roasted red bell pepper, you can find my recipe here – How To – Roasted Bell Pepper. There are tons of recipe available for pesto. If you don’t want to use it, you can simply use the pasta sauce or sun-dried tomato pesto on both the polenta.

365 Days of Pure Vegetarian Cooking with Compassion Priya Kothari, a food lover has been blogging for a while now on her favorite subject Food. She says ‘ I must admit that my real inspiration for cooking came from none other than the queen of Everyday Italian, Giada De Laurentiis. Thanks to her enthusiasm for cooking that has dug my hidden passion into something worthwhile. I will also add that my husband has a passion for food which merely goes to his upbringing; yes, my Mother-in-Law is an amazing cook and hence he has an inclination towards food cooked in a way which makes his taste buds jump in triumph! And last but not least, how can I forget my dear Mom who has always been a source of inspiration in creating simple yet very satisfying meals day in and day out. I hope to carry on the simplicity of preparing food from her and pass it on to my family and friends!’
