Co-op’s welcome £249m farm deal
The Co-operative Group has completed a £249m deal to sell its UK farming interests to The Wellcome Trust with immediate effect. Once Britain’s biggest farmer, this latest deal hastens the Co-op’s exit from the industry and brings much needed cash to ease problems arising from the Group’s banking activities. The deal includes some 15,997 hectares of freehold and third party owned land, 15 farms including three pack houses, over 100 residential properties and 27 commercial properties. Wellcome has purchased the business as a going concern, with just less than 250 employees transferring, and it will now trade as Farmcare Trading Ltd. Richard Pennycock, interim group chief executive at the Co-op said: “The Wellcome Trust has acquired an excellent business characterised by
the quality and professionalism of colleagues and high levels of customer service. I expect the farming business to continue to thrive under their committed longterm ownership.” Headquartered in Euston, London The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation dedicated to improving human and animal health. Chief investment officer Danny Truell, said: “The Wellcome Trust has a strong track record as a long-term investor which values responsible stewardship over quick profits, with extensive and successful UK interests in property and farmland. We believe we are ideally placed to develop and grow the Cooperative Group’s farms and farm business while providing continuity.” The move is welcomed by the NFU as a confidence boost for the industry. Speaking to Farmers UK Magazine, NFU food chain adviser
Tom Lander said: “Without knowing the full details, the announcement serves to underline the confidence in the UK agricultural sector. “It is good news that the farming business has a secured future for the time being and the NFU would welcome the opportunity to work with the Trust to understand its future aspirations. “We welcome the comments made by the Co-op and Wellcome Trust, whereby they anticipate the farming business continuing to thrive over a long-term period and that they are actively seeking to grow the farm business.” by Samuel Hawkins

Act now to head of potato overgrowth rgrowth Many potato crops have already reached the optimum market size of 80 to 85mm tubers, several weeks earlier than expected, thanks to extremely good growing conditions across most of the UK, except where irrigation has been short or in crops exposed to extended periods of extremely high blight pressure. As a result, growers now face the challenge of stopping further tuber growth beneath a vigorous crop canopy. “With this season's big crops, an initial Reglone application can quickly burn off the tops to help manage tuber size more effectively and reliably,” advises Syngenta potato specialist, Rob Farrow.
He advocates an initial treatment at a low rate of one-litre per hectare, which will also expose the stems for a second application to complete desiccation before harvest. The follow-up treatment can be tailored at two to four litres per hectare, depending on the remaining stems and green haulm. For best results the initial treatment in vigorous crops should be applied at 400L/ha using the angled Syngenta Potato Nozzle to achieve good coverage and canopy penetration, highlighted Mr Farrow. The second spray water volume can be reduced to 200L/ha, again using the angled nozzles for enhanced all round coverage of stems.
Protect maize before its get too tall relatively recently, however climatic conditions and the increase in industrial maize cropping is expected to see the incidence worsening. Syngenta field technical manager, Simon Roberts, warns: “For many, the height of plants is such that now is the last opportunity to spray a preventative fungicide using conventional farm sprayers without causing damage.” After a slow start, most maize crops have been growing incredibly well, but recent heavy rain and thunderstorms across southern and eastern England could trigger the onset of foliar diseases. Cool, wet or humid conditions typically result in more
serious loss of green leaf area caused by eyespot and leaf blight, at a time when crops should be growing at their fastest. Northern leaf blight (Helminthosporium turcicum) has only been identified in the UK
He advocates protection of the green leaf area with Quilt Xcel to ensure the crop can make more effective use of sunlight to boost cob yield, with improvements of over 15% seen in trials from the control of leaf blight alone.

Sheep event draws Defra committment A growing consensus between farmers and conservation groups, recognising the important role sheep play in maintaining the upland environment, was a highlight of the Sheep Event, held at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern and attended by Farming Minister George Eustice. During his official opening speach, Mr Eustice made a public commitment on three high priority issues for the National Sheep Association: to fight European carcase splitting rules, a clear intention to secure tolerance on read rates of electronic eartags and a reiteration of Defra’s promise to review the six-day standstill rule. NSA chief executive Phil Stocker was gratified to hear real commitment come from Mr Eustice. “I am sure the time he spent with our sheep farming office holders, trade exhibitors and visitors underlined how important it is that his commitments on these vital areas result in tangible progress in the near future.” But the biggest crowd was drawn by BBC Countryfile’s Tom Heap, who chaired The Big Debate on the thorny topic of balancing red meat supply with caring for the environment. “The debate revealed a more positive dialogue than in the past about achieving the optimum balance between farmers and conservation groups, particularly when it comes to stocking rates in the uplands,” said Mr Stocker. “It will never be easy to make this work in practice but, at a strategic level, there does seem to be a
consensus that sheep do play an important role and that it would be helpful to recognise and reward a wider range of public goods in the uplands, rather than just focusing on environmental stewardship.” Other key concerns for the sheep sector, covered in the seminar area which was packed throughout the day, included liver fluke, sheep scab and encouraging the next generation of producers. The event also hosted the national final of the Young Shepherd of the Year, open to shepherds aged 26 and under. The title, trophy and £1,000 prize went to NSA Scotland’s representative, 18 yearold Euan Orr, from Tarbrax, West Calder, West Lothian, with Sam Bullingham, Okehampton, Devon runner-up and Richard Carter of Newent, Gloucestershire and Alastair
Graham of Thropton, Northumberland equal third. The inaugural NSA Sheep Event Video Competition saw Krista Magee from the Isle of Man win a cash prize of £400 for her positive message about working in the sheep sector. Another first was a competition for the pen of sheep exhibited by a breed society stand that was both true to type and provided the best commercial representation of the breed. Won by the Welsh Mule Sheep Breeders Association. The next NSA Sheep Event is planned for 2016.

Farm saved seed royalties top £34m Grower royalty payments on Farm Saved Seed topped £10m for the first time in 2013 and have more than doubled in eight years, reports Karen Brewer, from the annual press-briefing of the British Society of Plant Breeders (BSPB), held in Newmarket, Suffolk. Farm Saved Seed now accounts for 30% of the £34.3m total royalty income for 2013, up 5.4% on the previous year despite reduced plantings and seed carryover following autumn 2012‘s extreme weather. BSPB chairman Richard Summers said FSS was now a strategically important income stream for future breeding re-search and innovation and underlined the importance of cross-industry collaboration. But he also identified field beans, oilseed rape, barley and certain pockets of the country where returns are low and will be the focus of BSPB‘s intelligence led enforcement activity. The Society is deeply concerned by European Parliament‘s recent rejection of legislation to protect breeders‘ rights and the likelihood of increasing curtailment of progressive breeding technology, but together with its members, many of them multinationals, is committed to operating in the international market place, whatever decisions are made in forthcoming Scottish independence and UK EU membership referenda. Dr Summers suggested antibusiness EU legislation could damage the UK‘s position as a leading global centre for plant breeding research and innovation
and jeopardise much of the progress made by the plant breeding and seeds sectors when the Commission comes forward with its proposed package on Plant Reproductive Material (PRM), expected towards the end of this year. BSPB has no problem with free exchange of small quantities of seed and plant material between private gardeners and to sustain traditional varieties, but is concerned of loopholes that could return the industry to pre-war conditions. Deregulation of the EU seeds market could seriously damage the UK‘s research intensive, science based approach to plant breeding, undermining IP protection, discouraging private sector R&D investment and raising potential concerns over seed quality, identity and performance, said Dr Summers. MEPs deemed the first PRM package too business friendly with insufficient focus on biodiversity, organic farmers and amateur gardeners. But the strength of lobbying from green NGOs in influencing the shape and direction of a re-vised package under the new Commission and Parliament causes major concern for the industry. A key priority for the society is working with UK government, European Seed Association and other industry partners to persuade the new intake
of the need for a legislative framework which supports continued investment to maintain productive, competitive and sustainable farming systems in Europe. Increasingly outward looking, BSPB is also trying to make connections with retailers and make plant breeding more accessible to a wider audience. A new website was launched in autumn 2013 and a new 32 page publication, Plant Breeding Matters, outlines the benefits of plant breeding on food, health, economy, environment and lifestyle. With developing technology blurring the line between GM and non-GM techniques, BSPB members are also concerned by some MEPs‘ approach to new science and foresee EU legislation blocking “normal usage stuff” in future.

Industry beef over red meat prices
Red meat prices dominated discussions at the Royal Welsh Show with supermarkets under fire for favouring imported product and failing to support UK beef and sheep producers during the peak production season, reports Karen Brewer from the Llanelwedd Showground, Builth Wells. Speaking on the opening day of Britain’s biggest agricultural show, Dai Davies, chairman of Hybu Cig
Cymru, (Meat Promotion Wales) said: “It is not an exaggeration to say that the sword of Damocles is hanging over the industry.” “Large quantities of imported beef products are now present in some UK retailers and we must presume, for want of a better explanation, it’s because it’s a penny or two cheaper than our own produce. At the same time the retail price of beef has risen (up 4% on last year) so British farmers are receiving less for their
beef cattle whilst consumers are paying more.” NFU Cymru President, Stephen James accused retailers of saying one thing but doing another. Tesco in particular coming under NFU criticism for its heavy promotion of New Zealand lamb at a time when grass fed British lamb was in peak season. “Following the horsegate scandal retailers told us they were committed to building relationships with farmers to shorten the supply chain and source closer to home,” said Mr James. “But 17 months down the line actions show little has changed. With the peak marketing period for our suckler calves a matter of weeks away, I fear farms will question their future in producing high quality beef.” Mr Davies said the current situation was leading to a crisis in confidence and a risk the industry could lose the critical mass necessary to ensure sustainable supplies to consumers. “Our message to the entire retail trade is simple, use our products or lose them.”

Sack and shuffle on Minister-go-round It’s all change on the ministerial front with both the UK Coalition and the Welsh Labour Governments dumping their farming ministers just days apart and while no cheers might be heard across the plains or the valleys, there were more postpost plaudits for Patterson than Davies. Owen Paterson has been shuffled from his role as Defra Secretary after less than two years in the post and dumped from the front benches altogether. Prime Minister David Cameron confirming South West Norfolk MP Liz Truss, an Education Minister for two years, as his replacement. In contrast, Wales’ Natural Resources and Food Minister Alun Davies was sacked on the spot by an angry Carwyn Jones after being reported by civil servants for using his office to gather information on Single Farm Payments received by opposition politicians. A potential second breach of the Ministerial Code within hours of a rap across the knuckles for inappropriate support of a race track planning application. MP for North Shropshire, Mr Paterson, inherited a complex and difficult portfolio when he was appointed to the position in September 2012. The ongoing controversial badger cull was always going to be difficult and it was widely considered that he did not handle it well. Defra watchers also believed his handling of the Somerset floods was the final straw. NFU president Meurig Raymond described Mr Paterson as a
champion of the farming industry, epitomised by his uncompromising pursuit of a badger cull policy as part of a wider strategy to control bovine TB. He has been an outspoken advocate for GM crops and, despite initially upsetting the farming industry with his stance on CAP reform, has delivered what many see as a workable framework for the new policy. Mr Paterson refused to go quietly claiming a ‘green blob’ of environmentalists had ousted him and that he had the full support of the whole of he countryside. The new secretary of state, Liz Truss, worked in the energy and telecommunications industry for ten years as a commercial director and economics director. She said: “I look forward to tackling the important issues facing our rural communities including championing British food, protecting people from flooding and improving the environment.” Describing the welsh farming industry’s relationship with Mr Davies as “difficult,” Farmers Union of Wales President, Emyr Jones welcomed the opportunity for a fresh start with new Minister Edwina
Hart and her deputy, Rebecca Evans. He said their first meetings had been “extremely positive and productive.”

Farmer Proof Mobile Phones With all the latest advancements in mobile technology there has never been such a pressure to keep up even in the farming world. The pace of modern day business no longer allows us to simply check our e-mail once or twice daily and things are moving away from face to face meetings and picking up the phone to our suppliers and customers. Now we are expected to use the internet, e-mail, text messaging and more to get the information we need and to get the job done day to day. The problem we are faced with is that a typical mobile phone doesn’t withstand the elements and the day to day bashing that they are subjected to when used outdoors. Until now! The Phone Trader supplies a range of mobile handsets that are specially designed for use in rough environments; their handsets are waterproof, dust proof, drop proof and sometimes even farmer proof! They stock everything from the RugGear RG128 which is an easy to use tough phone that floats in water right through to the Defender from UK brand The Toughphone which is the latest fully rugged Android smartphone on the market. Encouraging start for wheat Early signs from the UK wheat harvest are encouraging both on yield and quality, in direct contrast to a wet harvest in Germany, Poland and Germany, leaving traders around Europe trying to source quality wheat. “This may offer UK export opportunities, low spec milling wheat into North African homes and softs in the Mediterranean at the expense of French supplies,” says David Sheppard of Gleadell. “This may only total around 1m tonnes against an exportable surplus put at between 2.5-3.0m tonnes with
increased poorer quality French wheat available for feed across the Benelux and Mediterranean countries. “In the short term the quality of the German wheat crop, followed by results from Canada, Australia and Argentina will provide long term market price direction. We should not be surprised if, over the next few months, the differential between feed wheat and quality wheat widens, but this is no guarantee that either will increase in price.” Europe’s oilseed rape harvest is progressing well but, with a lack of
farmer selling across the continent, futures prices have bounced around €20/t from the harvest lows. Trading director Jonathan Lane has seen farmers looking to store seed or move it unpriced. On the fertiliser market, buying interest in urea and ammonium nitrate appears to have stalled according to Gleadell’s Calum Findlay. “At this quiet time the market continues to trade sideways at best, although CAN prices have moved up by €3/t in Europe with little demand expected to return until late September.”
Defra appeal ahead of slug pellating season As arable farmers gear up for the annual slug blitz Defra is appealing to producers to adhere to metaldehyde stewardship requirements and help maintain availability of key pesticides. Defra water quality spokesman, Matthew Hampshire, said: “Our objectives are to address metaldehyde exceedances in drinking water to aim to comply with water quality legislation, as well as to minimise burdens on the agricultural and crop protection industry by keeping as many pesticide products on the market as possible.” The Environment Agency’s Jo Kennedy added: “A UK wide withdrawal of metaldehyde would be an absolute last resort. It’s not a course of action the EA currently supports or wishes to see. We are focussed instead on working with other regulators and industry to find
a more targeted, risk based way of tackling the problem.” Dr David Cameron, chairman of the Metaldehyde Stewardship Group said the season ahead will be crucial. “It’s easy to find out if the land receiving slug pellet treatment is at risk by visiting the Environment Agency’s website www.wiyby.co.uk. Simply enter the postcode and if the land is within a hatched area, click on it to find out if metaldehyde is an identified risk. “Field risk factors for metaldehyde can be summed up as slope - the land’s topography-, stream proximity to a watercourse, and soil type - with heavier, under-drained soils most affected.” For more information and details of the current pilot projecting assessing the feasibility of field-based slug pellet substitution, visit www.getpelletwise.co.uk

N.P. Davies Agricultural Contractors
NP Davies was established by Nigel Davies in 1981 providing a quality and competitive service to farmers and landowners. Based on the borders of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire we can easily travel to other counties when required. A range of agricultural services are offered including, Forage Harvesting, Baling, Cultivation, Drilling, Manure Slurry Digestate and Compost Spreading, Machinery Hire and Contract and Share Farming. Haylage, Hay, Silage, Straw and Maize are available for sale all through the year. Second hand machinery is also purchased and refurbished during winter months, and maintenance work is carried out for local farmers. This service along with fabrications are growing year on year. Ensuring crops are planted and harvested with precision during the few days contractors are on-farm is
vital. The importance of the short period on each farm to ensure good quality forage for livestock has been the driving force for Shropshirebased forage contractor Nigel Davies and his team. “Our aim has always been to complete the job to a very high standard whilst remaining competitive, rather than to be the cheapest operation”. A perfect operation is key to farmer’s profits, because a rushed job will mean forage quality suffers, resulting in a lower palatable feed. Mr Davies runs NP Davies Agricultural Contractors who are National Association Agricultural Contractors members with wife Julie and a dedicated team of full and regular part-time staff. Mrs Davies is largely responsible for keeping the company’s administration up to date as well as doing essential runs for consumables. Son Andrew, having studied Agricultural
Engineering at Harper Adams as well as undertaking contracting work in New Zealand and the US, now works for Agco. Daughter Samantha studied Land Management at Harper Adams, and is now working for Smiths Gore having recently achieved MRICS. Both still drive for the business. Muck spreading and ground preparations for spring crops start the years’ work load. “From April we drill maize with a precision drill capable of placing micro and bulk fertiliser with the seed. We gained a lot experience sowing sugar beet with a precision planter across the region for 20 years. Maize requires a good level seedbed, the seed depth and seed spacing in the rows are also critical. I started with a small acreage of maize against a much larger acreage of sugar beet which was a huge slice of our annual work, but the closure of the local beet factory in 2007 means maize has

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL become the main crop”. This main focus on forage production means that Mr Davies has been able to make investments into this area to improve the service on offer. “Critical factors are chop length at harvest, dry matter, grain shatter and ensiling technique. I still actively drive with my staff and it is not uncommon to have a farm’s nutritionist, seed supplier or a machinery manufacturer on site looking at the quality of forage going off the field and into the clamp thanks to the good reputation we have gained”. N P Davies use high capacity triple mowers powered by high horse power reverse drive tractors. Grass can be turned by 10 rotor models depending on the dry matter required by the customer. Grass is raked with twin and quad rotor rakes depending on ground conditions and density of crop and by precision chopping, the grass can be compacted more efficiently creating a highly palatable feed. Wholecrop is a starch based, high dry matter and energy feed and can be fed to a range of animals. N P Davies use a direct cut header to forage all wholecrop, this is to ensure no contamination or loss of grain. A wholecrop processor is used with specialist wholecrop rollers which run at fine tolerances to make sure all grain is split. This is key to making a quality feed and cannot be compared to foraging without a crop processor. N P Davies specialises in maize foraging, key areas during the professional service include harvesting at the right dry matter, achieving a correct chop length, cracking the grain and last but not least consolidating the clamp. This is an area that NP Davies strive to
set themselves apart from the competition. Whether a tractor or loading shovel is used, or in some cases both depending on quantity of product going into the clamp the clamp dictates the speed of the forager. N P Davies prides itself on offering every customer the best possible precision chopped forage. By having better quality silage, additional feed and concentrates could be reduced. The silage made in just a few days could feed cows for a usual six month winter or more. For maximum profitability within this time cow intakes need to be improved and this would only be possible with highly palatable feed. The Kernal processor used in the forager for maize and wholecrop was imported especially to achieve a superior grain shatter. A range of different additives can be applied within the forage harvesting process if required.
Many of the Claverley-based business’ customers have increased their acreages in response to improvements in varieties, forage quality and the move to larger, if fewer, dairy herds. Mr Davies also supplies grass and maize direct to dairy and beef farmers in the area. Being involved with the Maize
Growers Association and seed suppliers I’ve followed the technical updates to ensure we are on top of the job. Claas harvesters are used extensively, with Mr Davies researching various technological advances to help improve forage quality. The characteristics of harvested maize for AD are different to that of a forage. Mr Davies has visited many AD plants in the UK and on the continent, I see the AD market being a big player. I can see maize and rye grass being used in arable rotations, growing these break crops looks appealing and is a good alternative. Also moving with the times is the company’s haylage business. Producing haylage for the equine market is rapidly replacing hay says Mr Davies says. Haylage has much lower dust and a higher nutrient value. That removes the need for
owners to soak fodder before feeding and cuts the need for additional hard feeds. About 120 acres is grown annually which is stored and then dispatched in loads varying from 20 bales taken by individual horse owners through to artic loads for large livery and working yards.

We are very keen to develop the haylage market. For the grower it takes out much of the risk in waiting for that window in summer to cut, dry and bale hay. In between the main maize and haylage contracting periods the company undertakes a range of arable and grassland duties. Baling services are centred around two sizes of baler the 3x3 bale measuring 80x90cm at up to 8 foot long and the “quadrant” size bale measuring 120x70cm at up to 8 foot long. The balers can bale straw, haylage, hay, silage and miscanthus. Balers are equipped with moisture meters. N P Davies prides themselves on good quality bales. Also wrapping can be done as a part job or part of the baling operation, from 4 to 8 layers can be supplied and applied by our wrappers depending on the choice of the customer. All bales can also be stacked and transported to the customer requirements. Ploughing is the main primary cultivation carried out by N P Davies, 5 and 6 furrow ploughs are used and these can be set up depending on previous and next crop type. Subsoiling and discing can be
done together or separately, with or without a packer roller depending on the requirements. For germination a double set of discs can be used, for subsoiling eight legs can be used over a 4 metre section, or for a complete tilth 4 to 8 legs can be used, two sets of discs and a packer. For secondary cultivation a range of power harrows can be used, a 6 metre hydraulic folding power harrow does the bulk of the work, with the ability to call on a 3 and 4 metre power harrow also. Manure, slurry and digestate spreading is an area of the business that is growing, as farmers look to focus on their cattle. High specification machines are used to make sure that spreading of manure is accurate. For chicken manure spreader plates can be used to ensure an accurate spread. Compost can also be supplied and spread. Tractor hire is available with operator and fuel with 100-300hp tractors, also manure spreaders are available with or without tractor and operator with the option of spreader plates. A 360 degree excavator is available for hire with or without
operator, the 13 tonne machine is a multi purpose machine which can be used for a range of tasks from ditching to digging and general groundworks. This particular excavator can be supplied with a range of buckets. Road building and amenity services are also areas of the business seeing an expansion, road building has become more popular from farmers looking to improve cattle welfare, or install new tracks for better access or just improving old tracks. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff that include a number of local farmers’ sons who join us year-on-year for busy periods. That is important for customers as the drivers are the face of the company when going in and out of farms during forage harvesting and clamping. The fact we run a fleet of Fendts encourages drivers to continue working for us as they like the reliability and comfort. And from my point of view, Fendts are also economical and have very strong resale values. Mr Davies’ experience and investment in maize grain processing technology will enable customers to benefit. Other added value benefits for the customer include trailers running on low ground pressure tyres and high capacity and efficient machinery. Year-round demand for a quality product produced during a few days of intensive, efficient and accurate work by the NP Davies’ team will once again pay dividend.

Forage break aids blackgrass control
Growing a forage break-crop such as Lucerne, grass or a grass/red clover mix could be a useful strategy for blackgrass control, particularly on more marginal
sites with less combinable yield potential. Sowing a forage break between cereals has many benefits according to Rod Bonshor of Oliver Seeds.
“Frequent mowing over two to three years represses blackgrass growth, reducing weed seed production by as much as 90%. At the same time, deep rooting legumes promote good soil structure and boost natural fertility by fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Lucerne is ideally suited to light free-draining soils at pH7, yields up to 13tDM/ha/year over the first two years and produces a high protein cash crop that can be sold to dairy and beef farmers. Red clover, sown on its own or in a ryegrass mix, can produce up to 19tDM/ha/year of high-quality, protein-rich forage.
Flea beetle feeding frenzy in oilseed rape
Wet, warm soil conditions have brought a rapid flush of volunteer rape seedlings and a feeding frenzy for flea beetles. Growers are reporting large numbers of flea beetles seen in trailers when harvesting their remaining oilseed rape, a possible indication of the high pest pressure the new crop will face.
Field technical manager Simon Roberts, of Syngenta, warns growers will need to keep a close watch on emerging seedlings this season, and be ready to tackle pests. The leaf damage caused by flea beetle can occur incredibly quickly and be extremely destructive. If conditions remain hot and dry after emergence, with any check in crop growth, the damaged small plants can quickly shrivel and die.

Farmers reaping the benefits of the sun Ground Mount verses Roof Mount – The Popularity of the Solar Panel As the Feed In Tariff rolls into its fourth year of operation, the interest in Renewable Energy seems to only be gaining momentum. With Solar PV systems making up 87% of the total number of energy installations in the United Kingdom (OFGEM Dec 2013), it would appear that people are reaping the benefits of the power from the Sun. The South West is the largest producers of Solar Energy, producing 4.36 MW in 2013 alone (OFGEM Dec 2013). Of course, there are obvious reasons why the South West is the most ideal location to install a Solar PV System, or even a solar farm with the most access to sunlight in the UK, however, there is nothing to prevent any business from seizing the rewards of a renewable energy system. Many people are often concerned about whether their land gets enough sunlight to warrant a Solar PV system, however, the panels only require daylight and not sunlight to generate power.
A common myth surrounding Solar PV is that the land or roof of a property must face due south. However, current installations show that a 13% annual return is still possible with installations that face East/West. Another discussion which occurs when discussing Solar PV generation is whether a Roof Mounted PV system or Ground Mounted system is better. The truth is that there are benefits of both types of system and one is not necessarily better than the other. A Ground Mounted PV system enables a farm or business to make the use of spare land that cannot be used for other purposes, generating money it would not ordinarily produce. Farmers with small livestock such as sheep or chickens can still let the animals use the field as the height of the system will not interfere their grazing. Ground Mounted PV systems also enable large scale installations to take place which are capable of powering large businesses whilst making money by exporting unused electricity back to the grid. Additionally, there will always be room for expansion with a Ground Mounted system as a business develops or as profit is made. Bowler Energy have installed 2.3MW of Ground Mounted solar panels since the company started in 2011. When this figure
is compared the 3.2MW of Roof Mounted Solar fitted in the same time, it would appear that Roof Mounted is a slightly more popular option. This is likely to be a result of the company initially marketing roof mounted panels to fit on the top of existing chicken sheds on our freerange farms, from there we have developed out business to provide other types of renewable energy system. Another reason for the popularity of the Roof Mounted PV system is that it does not take up any extra land. Therefore businesses based on large scale industrial sites can benefit from a PV system which will still generate enough energy to power but not take up any additional space. The Roof Mounted PV system can often fall within ‘permitted development’ meaning that no planning permission would be required to install a system 50kW or below as long as there is a 1m spacing between the panel and the edge of the roof. Solar PV Systems are consistently going to be the most popular option of Renewable Energy because they are the most accessible. The Roof Mount verses Ground Mount decision will always remain down to the client’s personal preference and location. But one thing many people who have a Solar PV system can be sure of it that the return on investment and the reduction in energy bills is enough to encourage anyone to take the first steps towards a Solar PV system of their own.

Ernest Fenton is an arable and sheep farmer in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He also runs an ice rink for curling and, in March 2012, had a 50kW roof-mounted solar PV system installed by Bowler Energy on a new, purpose built barn. As you can imagine, maintaining an ice rink requires a massive amount of electricity. For Ernest the deciding factors in pursuing a solar installation were the income from the feed-in tariffs and the ability to moderate his electricity costs for the next twenty years. The idea behind the purpose built barn was so that a roof-mounted system could be installed at the optimum angle to gain maximum output – and the barn itself provides a useful storage area. This could not have been gained from a groundmounted array and it helped to make the project more viable. Before awarding the contract to Bowler Energy, Ernest did his research and contacted other solar PV installers, but he says that some of them were not very good at responding to the difficult questions that he asked, whereas Bowler Energy’s Eddie Chadfield was always at the end of the phone with answers to his questions. Ernest knew Bowler Energy were a longestablished company and the quotation was competitive, so it seemed a good choice to go with them. Planning permission was required for the installation which Bowler Energy dealt with as part of the package. The installation itself was very speedy – in fact Ernest recalls the installation team were working against the clock to get the system installed and commissioned before
the tariff reduction came into effect, which they did. All in all, the entire process from initial contact to completed and commissioned PV system took five months. Ernest has been very pleased with his new PV system. It has lowered his reliance on electricity consumption from the grid, which is quite significant considering the amount of electricity required to maintain the ice rink. Ernest used to only open the ice rink during the winter months but since the installation of the PV array he has been able to extend the opening season to include spring and autumn. Previously the cost of keeping the ice cool would have made this financially prohibitive but now that Ernest has less reliance on bought-in electricity, he can afford to use his own electricity produced by his solar panels to move his business forward. “Electricity consumption is heading in the right direction,” says Ernest. “The feed-in tariff income has helped to support the farm, which has been a godsend during these last few months. We would be in a very different position now if it wasn’t for that”. Ernest now has a full twelve months of production data available and can see that only one month out of twelve the panels performed under target – for the other eleven months the panels were either on or above target. Says Ernest “I have a friend on the south coast who has an installation the same size as mine on one of his dairy buildings. We compare output readings and every
month so far mine has beaten his by at least 10% and sometimes as much as 15%!” As part of the package Ernest opted to have a solar logger fitted, which is a device offered by Bowler Energy on all its PV installations to enable the client to monitor the output of their panels. The solar logger even alerts the client if output falls below a certain level. This can be particularly useful in the event of a malfunction which could otherwise go unnoticed until the next quarterly meter reading was due, by which time the financial loss would be considerable. Ernest is also very happy with the back-up support received from Bowler Energy. To illustrate this he talks about a phone call he had from Bowler Energy about twelve months after the PV system was installed. “I received a parcel at the farm containing three brand new inverters. Eddie explained that Bowler Energy had experienced some problems on arrays with these particular inverters fitted. The supplier admitted they had a faulty batch and Bowler Energy negotiated to have all inverters which could potentially be affected replaced at no cost to the client. This is forward thinking and I am pleased that Bowler Energy has provided me with this level of service as you don’t know there is a problem with an inverter until it is too late. Therefore they have taken the necessary steps to prevent this happening on my site.”

Alta advantage partner wins Gold Cup We would like to take the opportunity to congratulate our Alta Advantage Partner, Mr. Michael Eavis, owner of Worthy Farm in Pilton, on winning the 2014 National Milk Records/Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers (NMR/RABDF) Gold Cup. implement them on the farm. They implemented one of those new ideas a few years ago when they made the switch to raising all of their own young stock on farm. Previously a flying herd, they used to sell all calves and buy replacements from other sources, which in itself had brought different challenges. After making the switch to raising their replacements inhouse, they worked with their Alta Consultant, Ian Cox, to

The farm is managed by John and Pam Taylor who have regular meetings with Michael to monitor progress, set targets, develop new ideas, and
become an Alta Advantage herd. Ian helped John to build a genetic plan and farm index based on the farm’s own customized selection criteria and who they sell their milk to. This means that the breeding programme is completely unique to Worthy Farm. Their customized genetic plan has 42% weight on production traits, 16% on health traits and 42% weight on conformation traits. With that in place, the sires
that fit their genetic plan include Roble, Stalwart, Omega, Mopan and Entrust, who they are currently using in their breeding program. Following August proofs, they will begin using Matt, Cornell, Aware, Symphony, Pyramid and 5G to continue meeting their genetic goals. Running a dairy farm on the famous Glastonbury Festival site comes with its own set of challenges. Their attention to detail keeps their cows performing well with a herd averaging 12,101 kg of Milk at 3.96 % fat and 3.11% protein on 2x a day milking. “I first went on an Alta Showcase Tour 5 years ago and switched to all Alta all the time about 3 ½ years ago. Since switching to Alta, I built my own genetic plan. We currently use about 75% genomic semen and AI most of the heifers with sexed semen. We have some outstanding genomic heifers and are getting some good results with sexed semen! The last batch of heifers bred with 55 straws, created 41 pregnancies. Like Alta says .... Pregnancies make profit!” John Taylor, Worthy Farm Manager Michael is still making changes in the herd and is aiming to increase numbers to 500 cows in the next few years. He is also contemplating the possibility of using robots in the longer term to improve the quality of life for both cows and staff alike.

Swine flu in a third of herds influenza strains. Callum Blair of Merial Animal Health said: “We would suspect that the results of blood tests at slaughter are an under-estimate of the actual prevalence of swine influenza. Antibodies from natural infection wane over time so pigs that may have been affected could still test negative at slaughter. So it may be that the prevalence is even higher than a third of herds.
One in three pig herds are affected by swine influenza according to aggregated data from surveys of just over 280 farms in Scotland and Northern Ireland over the last three years. The Scottish data is from figures collected by Quality Meat Scotland based on blood samples taken in 2012 and 2013 while the Northern Irish data was gathered at the two
main slaughter houses in the Province in 2011. Assessment and serology demonstrated that 34% of the herds were positive for the disease. This compares to research on pig farms in England carried out by the Royal Veterinary College and the COSI Consortium in 2010 which showed that 59 per cent of herds were positive for one of the swine
Swine influenza can significantly increase herd replacement rates, increasing the likelihood of both abortion and still births. The disease can also affect conception rates and decrease lactation, both of which add to a decrease in herd output. It is possible to vaccinate against all three of the main subtypes of the disease with Gripovac the only approved swine influenza vaccine on the UK market.
New pneumonia vaccination initiative for dairy and beef calves A new pneumonia vaccination awareness initiative is to run through August and September following findings the disease can cost £243/head in suckler calves and £1,008/head in dairy heifers. The campaign includes a five-point-plan to help more farmers realise the gains available from minimising respiratory disease, both severe clinical and low grade, during winter housing. Backed by animal health company Zoetis, it follows a review of published research that found just how much a pneumonia-free rearing period can be worth.

High August parasite risk forecast for beef and lamb worms and therefore the severity of Parasitic Gastro- Enteritis. “Farmers should also remember to include rams in their parasite control programme as they are often forgotten, but equally susceptible,” says Lynda Maris of parasite forecast sponsor Merial Animal Health.
UK sheep and cattle face a high risk of parasite infection in the next few weeks with a peak in larval contamination of pastures forecast for August. Farmers are advised to check stock regularly with warm wet summer weather often related to an increase in gutworm burden. The National Animal Disease Information Service’s parasite forecast also highlights the risk of lungworm in cattle this month. In sheep, the effect of persistent anthelmintic treatments that were
administered to ewes at lambing may now be wearing off, so farmers should check whether ewes need redosing by carrying out faecal egg counts. Grass that has not been grazed by sheep this year and silage aftermaths may be best for fattening weaned lambs as any worms on these pastures will have died without the presence of a host. If there is no option but to keep lambs on contaminated pastures, an anthelmintic treatment may be required to limit the population of
Incidence of type 1 Ostertagiosis in cattle peaks in late summer. Symptoms include sudden profuse scouring which will quickly affect much of the herd. “There are a number of products on the market licensed to treat gutworms, for example Ivomec Classic Pour-on and Eprinex,” says Mrs Maris. Many of these products also provide persistent activity to protect against re-infection and allow dosing intervals to be increased. But some anthelmintic treatment regimens may not last the whole grazing season. Lungworm infection may therefore be a problem towards the end of summer, especially if conditions are wet, allowing larvae to be released from dry dung pats.
New Welsh TB restrictions from September New TB movement restrictions are to be introduced in Wales next month, although to minimise disruption to cattle keepers, the Welsh Government has introduced temporary measures called Interim Land Association Management (ILAM) arrangements. Cattle moving within Sole Occupancy Authorities (SOAs) will be subject to pre-movement testing from the 30 September 2014. However, herd keepers who previously had a SOA exemption may
now apply for permission to move their animals between linked pieces of land within a 10 mile radius, without testing, as long as certain criteria are met. Farmers wishing to apply for an ILAM should, in the first instance, contact their vet. All successful ILAM applications will continue until new arrangements come into force but farmers will be required to reapply for an ILAM if there are any changes in circumstance.

FARMERS UK NEWS & ADVERTORIAL
New McCormick dealer in Suffolk admits he was reluctant to even consider adding a tractor franchise to the business having dropped another make a few years ago. Agri-Hire is a family owned business, established in 1986 to hire out cultivation equipment to local farmers and now probably the largest muck spreader hire operation in the country.
Agri-Hire, currently based at Bramford, Ipswich, but soon moving to new premises close by,
is to be the Suffolk dealer for McCormick tractors, taking on sales, service and parts support.
Managing director Tim Hubert said McCormick compact and farm tractors will join the hire fleet. Tractor sales will run alongside Agri-Hire’s large Dowdeswell plough dealership and implements from several other manufacturers, including Standen Pearson, McConnel, Shelbourne Reynolds and Major Equipment.
Award for John Deere’s F1 gearbox John Deere’s innovative DirectDrive transmission was judged winner of the tractor category in the new International Machinery Manufacturers Awards (IMMA) presented at Cereals 2014 in June. Judges, drawn from the Agricultural Engineers’ Association, Institution of Agricultural Engineers and Royal Agricultural University, said: “The potential for greater efficiency and lower fuel use is great.” Significant fuel savings of up to four per cent, compared with currently available transmissions, have been measured on the test facilities at John Deere’s tractor factory in Mannheim and during independent field tests. The newly designed 24-speed DirectDrive transmission employs Formula 1 technology on John Deere’s six-cylinder 6R Series tractor range to combine the handling comfort of an infinitely variable shift transmission with exceptional efficiency. It is designed to deliver maximum
productivity with lower fuel consumption for tasks that need continuous power, such as ploughing and towing, pto work and road transport.

FARMERS UK NEWS & ADVERTORIAL
Gator gets a makeover Following customer feedback, John Deere has introduced a number of additional new features on the XUV 855D Gator 4x4 utility vehicle for 2013. These include a digital instrument cluster, a bigger capacity 55A alternator and a much larger 27.6-litre fuel tank, to enable longer working days. The dash-mounted instrument cluster displays the odometer, ground speed, fuel level and coolant temperature, engine rpm, a clock and the four-wheel drive indicator. It can be adjusted for different tyre sizes to ensure that the ground speed is accurately shown, particularly when using sprayer or spreader attachments, or driving on the road. Engine braking has also been improved, to provide better performance in hilly conditions. The vehicle’s descent control system has been redesigned to enable the clutch to stay engaged, providing more controlled deceleration down to around 3mph. In addition, the continuously v a r i a b l e transmission (CVT) intake now draws in 50 per cent more air to reduce heat, as well as the amount of water ingested by the CVT system and the clutches. This leads to less belt slippage and improved durability overall.
This follows the introduction of a new electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) system earlier this year, which is now standard on the XUV 855D Gator with olive & black livery, and optional on the green & yellow version. The 25hp XUV 855D Gator has a top speed of 32mph (52kph) and features true on-demand four-wheel drive, activated by a dash-mounted electronic switch, and all-round suspension, adjustable at the rear. Ground clearance is 267mm (11in), total payload is 635kg and towing capacity is 680kg. The Gator’s standard four post ROPS frame can be optionally upgraded to a deluxe full glass cab if required, and further options include tool carriers and cargo box dividers, a front mounted load rack, a bull bar and side extensions. A rear bumper and horn are now standard.
