Farmers call on the next Government to support British agriculture
Farmers are calling on the next Government to give agriculture a higher priority, with a series of measures that will boost British food production and help farm businesses. The National Farmers Union launched its manifesto with a list of demands aimed at whichever party – or parties – is successful after polling day next May. They include calls to negotiate with the EU to reduce some of the environmental restrictions imposed on farmers as part of the Common Agriculture Policy. They also want help to iron out the peaks of troughs caused by the volatility of commodity markets, stronger backing for home-produced foods – and increased speed limits for tractors on public roads. NFU president and Welsh farmer
4
Meurig Raymond, writing in the introduction to the policy document, points out that farming provides the raw materials for Britain’s biggest manufacturing industry – food production – and that UK farmers already provide 60% of the food we eat. He goes on: “The opportunity is clear – global and domestic demand for food and renewable energy is on the rise: 88 per cent of the UK public think farming is important to the economy. “Farmers are ready too, with the potential to grow production and reduce our reliance on imported produce. What is needed now is a Government that understands farming, that supports growth and that has the policies that send the right business signals to farmers across the UK.”
On a comprehensive ‘shopping list’ it calls for government to: • Develop a comprehensive plan to grow UK food production • Set the agenda for CAP 2020 reforms, based on principles of fairness, simplicity, commonality and market focus • Establish fiscal incentives to encourage a balanced approach to investment to manage volatility • Reduce red tape to increase onfarm water storage and reservoir building with financial support and tax incentives • Promote the ‘Britain is Great’ message to open up export markets by backing exporters and embassy staff. • Update legislation that restricts the weight and speed of tractors travelling on public roads.

FARMERS UK NEWS
• Introduce a seasonal labour scheme open to students from outside the EU to undertake seasonal harvest work on UK farms. • Accelerate the rollout of highspeed broadband to all rural areas. Some of the demands, around relaxing the Greening measures required as part of the CAP and increasing the weight and speed of farm vehicles on the roads are likely to bring the NFU into conflict with some environmental groups. And on relaxing immigration rules to allow in more foreigners from outside the EU to take seasonal farm work, they risk a clash with the Conservatives. Farm Minister and Camborne and Redruth MP George
Eustice told the NFU conference last February he thought British jobless should take seasonal farm jobs and there was no need for imported labour. Although the manifesto does not specifically call for the roll-out of the badger cull beyond the current two pilot areas, it does stress the need to keep on course with the current 25 year eradication policy. And it calls for some herbicides and pesticides removed from the list of approved chemicals to be restored, to avoid the threats posed by insects and weeds. Finally it warns that climate change and environmental policies must go ‘hand-in-hand’ with
increased production – so called sustainable intensification. Mr Raymond said: “I am intensely aware of the major challenges ahead for British farmers – to produce more food but with fewer inputs and better care for the environment. I want the next Government to work with the NFU to set an agenda for growth, building on the professionalism and confidence of British farmers. "By backing British farming and working together we have a unique opportunity to increase food production by supporting research, investment and growth".
Global spotlight on British food and farming Over 200 agricultural journalists from 37 countries including India, the Americas, Africa, Australasia, South East Asia and Europe, attended a showcase of British food and farming from the beginning of September, as the British Guild of Agricultural Journalists (BGAJ) hosted the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) 2014 Congress. Titled ‘Innovations from a Small Island,' and sponsored by Massey Fergusson, Perkins and Waitrose, the event began with a pre-Congress tour taking in Kew’s Millenium Seed Bank, the Leckford Estate in Hampshire and a full English’ breakfast at London’s Smithfield Market. At the main event, based in Aberdeen, the Congress was served 400kg of Scotch Beef, 50 haggis, 160kg of Scotch Lamb with drams of Glenlivet, Glen Garioch and GlenDronach whisky to follow. Five packed days included visits to many family owned businesses such as Mackintosh of Gelndaveny and Mackies of Scotland who now export to South Korea, China, USA and Japan, followed by a post-event round-up taking in in Central England and Wales.
We cannot overestimate the potential value of this event to promote the great strengths of British food production to our visitors (who) give us an estimated audience of over 40 million readers, listeners and viewers across the world," explained Jane Craigie, chairman of the BGAJ.

FARMERS UK NEWS & ADVERTORIAL
Basic defence measures can help in the battle against rural crime
With rural crime on the increase, former Royal Marine and Westcountry-based security expert Marcus Di-Vincenzo says that defence tactics can help put a stop to it. Recent reports of rural crime being up 35% in Devon and Cornwall in 2013 have come as a bit of a shock for many living in the Westcountry. Yet, there are likely to be many people who can understand how and why thieves can effortlessly get away with ‘agri-crimes’ in the more rural parts of the South West. As a former Royal Marine and having served all over the world, I
8
have learnt, practised and put into good use the defence tactics used to prevent crime, time and time again. The success rate is high, and if rural landowners, farmers or property owners were to use these same defence tactics, crime rates would fall significantly. The NFU Mutual annual Rural Crime Survey showed that the most common items targeted by thieves in the region over the last 12 months were tools, quad bikes and machinery. These items are big. They can’t be discretely removed from a property, whilst the farmer is momentarily distracted. It takes a lot
of strategic planning to successfully remove a plough or a hay baler without anyone batting an eyelid. Unless of course, these bits of equipment are left unattended, unsecured and unmonitored It might come as a bit of a surprise, but unfortunately a lot of ‘agri-crime’ is down to bad housekeeping. One of the first steps to consider in the principles of defence is all-round defence. This involves analysing a situation and ensuring that you have adequately protected your property. Machinery, quad bikes and other agricultural equipment, as well as

FARMERS UK NEWS & ADVERTORIAL cars and bikes, are easy to steal if they are not sufficiently protected. Those of us that are fortunate enough to live or work in rural, secluded locations are often guilty of believing that crime is something that is more likely to affect urban areas, and we are therefore less likely to lock our vehicles and remove the keys. Common factors in rural crime include vehicles being left unlocked because they might not be considered particularly valuable or at risk, or worse still, vehicles left with the keys in the ignition. This makes it all too easy for criminals to walk on to the property and leave with a work vehicle. All-round defence needs to be considered at all times, even in the most unlikely situations. The same can be said for tools and equipment that is left in a visible position with no clear security or protection. Tools are valuable pieces of equipment and if they look like they have been left unattended, it is more than likely that they will eventually go missing. All too often, rural crimes are down to a lack of awareness and protection. It is a common misconception that security alarms, CCTV and tracking equipment is costly and unnecessary. But with the NFU
Mutual survey revealing that rural crime cost the UK £44.5 million in 2013 alone, I would say it is an essential part of keeping costs down. In Devon, the costs associated with rural crime are as high as £720,000 and £330,000 in Cornwall. For rural
The countryside offers rich pickings for criminals who are increasingly targeting farm Machinery businesses and farms, security should be a necessity in order to prevent costs associated with replacing stolen goods. Costs do not have to be high and simple security techniques can keep your valuable possessions safe. Keeping doors and barns locked is one simple security measure, referred to as mutual support, that can help eliminate crime on your property. Not only does it deter criminals but it also conceals your valuable possessions. In some cases, it isn’t always possible to use sheds and barns to
store equipment but there are plenty of other ways of still keeping this equipment safe from harm. Installing cameras and setting up a virtual tripwire that is activated if there is any unauthorised movement that takes place during a certain time and in a very specific location. CCTV and intruder alarms are now available with technology that allows you to monitor individual possessions and vehicles, so you know if and when anything goes missing and you will also have video footage of the perpetrator. Tracking devices are hugely undervalued and underestimated pieces of equipment. They can be installed to any sort of vehicle or device and the criminals won’t even know it is there. This enables the police to locate any stolen property almost immediately. Although slightly more expensive, in times when crime is on the up, they offer an invaluable piece of mind that as a business owner, I wouldn’t be without. Rural ‘agri-crime’ is an issue that we can and should be fighting. The issue of stock rustling is one that I don’t currently have the answers for, as although there are ways of keeping animals safe, it is an issue of convenience for farmers and landowners who need to go about their daily business. Its one issue that I aim to challenge though and I’ll work closely with the farming community until we find a solution. Marcus Di-Vincenzo is managing director of Marsh Barton Security Services

Badger culls resume in Somerset and Gloucestershire as part of government's comprehensive strategy to make England TB free The second year of the four-year badger culls in Somerset and Gloucestershire is underway. Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said: We are pursuing a comprehensive strategy supported by leading vets which includes cattle movement controls, vaccinating badgers in edge areas and culling badgers where the disease is rife. This is vital for the future of our beef and dairy industries, and our nation’s food security. At present we have the highest rates of bovine TB in Europe. Doing nothing is not an option and that is why we are taking a responsible approach to dealing with bovine TB. Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss informed Parliament this morning. Written Ministerial Statement Elizabeth Truss I am today announcing that the scond year of our planned, four-year badger culls is underway. This is part of our comprehensive strategic approach to make England TB-free. This approach includes cattle movement restrictions, vaccination in the edge area, and culling where the disease is rife. Culling operations started last night in the same areas as last year, West Gloucestershire and West Somerset. It is vital that we work to make England bovine TB-free – doing nothing is not an option. England now has the highest incidence of TB in Europe – greater than the sum of all other EU Member States combined. Between 1997 and 2010, TB in cattle increased nine fold,
10
threatening the future of our beef and dairy industries and our nation’s food security. That is why this government is pursuing a comprehensive strategic approach, based on best international practice, supported by leading vets and endorsed by the government’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Defra’s Chief Scientist and the Chief Veterinary Officer. Overseas experience shows that in order to eradicate the disease, the problem must be tackled in both cattle and wildlife. Therefore, our approach includes tighter cattle testing and movement restrictions, vaccination of badgers in the edge area and culling of badgers in those areas where the disease is rife. This approach has worked in Australia which is now bovine TB-free, and Ireland and New Zealand, Where incidence has dramatically reduced. Last week I launched the Badger Edge Vaccination Scheme to support badger vaccination projects in those
areas next to the high risk area. Vaccinating healthy badgers in this way is intended to create a buffer zone to help prevent the spread of bovine TB to new parts of the country where the incidence of the disease is currently very low. Vaccination cannot, however, replace culling in TB hotspots such as Gloucestershire and Somerset as it doesn’t cure infected badgers who will continue to spread disease. This year’s culls incorporate improvements learned from last year’s culls and those set out in the Independent Expert Panel’s report. We have made changes to improve the humaneness and effectiveness, including better training and monitoring. The culls will be monitored closely and we have published details of the monitoring procedures that AHVLA and Natural England will follow on GOV.UK. As with last year, these results will be independently audited.

New camp to stop the badger cull
Campaigners who have set up a fresh Camp Badger to fight the cull say they are prepared to push legal boundaries if it will stop animals being killed. Numbers were growing at the camp near Bishop Lydeard in West Somerset yesterday ahead of shooting commencing last night. Jay Tiernan, spokesman for Stop the Cull, said they were there to protect the badgers. “We are about being out there in the field to stop badgers being killed,” he said. Mr Tiernan said that he would absolutely condemn personal harassment or criminal damage of personal equipment as a means to their end. However, he added that he was less worried about something like “jumping up and down on cages” which could be against the law. The camp features compost toilets and a communal kitchen tent
where free, vegan meals are served to people who join the protect. Mr Tiernan said the mood among local people was good and some had opened their homes so that protestors could take showers. So far, between 10 and 20 people are camped out and ready to start disrupting the cull, which they aim to do by tracking down where the marksmen are operating and preventing them from firing by simply making their presence felt. It is expected the numbers at the camp could grow to as much as 50 during weekends, said Mr Tiernan. “They have a minimum and a maximum number (of badgers to kill) and our aim is to stop them reaching their maximum number and to make the job of killing badgers as difficult as possible.” Yesterday, the Somerset Against the Badger Cull (SABC) group handed in a letter to the Bridgwater office of Ian Liddell-Grainger, the MP for much of the cull zone.
A spokesman for the group said: “We totally condemn the continuation of badger culling in Somerset. “It’s pointless, ineffective.”
cruel
and
They accused the Government of “cherry picking” evidence to support their policy and ignoring a recommendation from the previous trial which was that further badger culling would be meaningless in the fight against bovine TB. “We believe this policy is driven by political expediency bowing to the whim of wealthy landowners who refuse to accept scientific evidence that contradicts their long-held beliefs. “Culling badgers isn’t going to help farmers in their fight against bTB. By going out onto the footpaths and lanes of Somerset day and night during the cull we are standing up for science, conservation, badgers – and democracy.”

FARMERS UK PHONE FEATURE
6 of the best tough smartphones Farmers UK bring yoU siX oF the hardiest handsets 1. NAUTIZ X1 Here's a phone that meets both the MILSTD-810G and the IP67 standards – the Nautiz X1. It is built to resist extreme temperatures, humitidy, vibrations, drops onto hard surfaces, and liquid damage. Plus, the handset's 4-inch, 480x800 pixel display is suitable for outdoor use. Android 4.0 or Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 can be pre-installed on the phone, depending on the buyer's needs. 2. JCB TOUGHPHONE PROSMART Similarly, JCB has its own range of super tough phones and the smartest among them is the ToughPhone Pro-Smart. It is shock resistant, water resistant, dust resistant, and IP67 certified, which makes it a phone well worthy of its name. Too bad that JCB's Android handset is seriously outdated when it comes to hardware and software specs. An 800MHz processor with 256MB of RAM are under its hood with Gingerbread running the show. 3. CAT B15 Caterpillar is a brand usually associated with heavy machinery dozers, asphalt pavers, excavators, stuff like that. However, the company offers mobile phones as well for those who need something tougher than a Christmas tree ornament. One of these rugged phones is the CAT B15 Android smartphone, which is strong enough to withstand 6 feet (1.8 meter) drops. It is also water-resistant and the screen can be operated when wet. 4. CASIO G’zONE COMMANDO 4G LTE Here's what Verizon has to offer to all in need of a tough smartphone. The CASIO G’zOne Commando 4G LTE meets military standards for
ruggedness so you know it will handle a lot more abuse than a smartphone should ever be subjected to. It can be operated through gloves and it comes with two very loud front-facing speakers for those times when you need to make a call in a noisy environment. At the same time, the G’zOne Commando offers 4G LTE connectivity for blazing-fast internet access. 5. NEC TERRAIN It is surely not the prettiest phone ever made, but it is tougher than anything else that AT&T has to offer. The NEC Terrain meets the MIL-STD-810G standards, which means that shock, liquids, dust, and extreme temperatures will have a hard time doing it any harm. You get dual front-facing speakers as well for loud and clear conversations in noisy environments. Specs aren't terribly bad either. The NEC Terrain packs a Snapdragon S4 chip, 1GB of RAM, and a 640x480 pixel display. 6. KYOCERA TORQUE Sprint has the Kyocera Torque – a rugged Android handset with IP67 and 810G certifications. As the previous offerings, the phone can withstand extreme heat and cold, shock, vibration, and drops onto hard surfaces. Of course, it is resistant to dust and water damage as well. Exellent sound quality is ensured by the breakthrough Smart Sonic Receiver, which delivers sound waves from the phone's surface to the user's eardrum. Specs include a 1.2GHz dualcore CPU, 4-inch IPS display, 5MP camera, and 4G LTE. 7. Runbo X6Yeah, we know that the brand name does not ring any bells, but a phone like this one does deserve to be present on our list. The Runbo X6 is tough enough to withstand serious drops and water damage, yet perfectly capable of functioning as a decent Android smartphone of an upper grade. It features a 5-inch screen, a quad-core MediaTek processor, a 12MP camera, and a humongous 4200mAh battery

FARMERS UK FARMING NEWS
Arable efficiency focus for HGCA farms Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA) is set to add eight new arable farms to its UK-wide monitor farm programme this winter, in a bid to help growers remain successful despite falling grain prices and increasing costs of production, reports Karen Brewer. Warwickshire grower Rob Fox, from Squab Hall near Leamington Spa, said: “With UK arable farms again under pressure from low prices and a large world harvest it is now as important as ever to really know your cost of production. Through the use of benchmarking and knowledge sharing the monitor farm programme is helping us to farm more efficiently.” Squab Hall is typical of the 12 existing monitor farms, commercial enterprises representative of conditions in their area, where the host farmer is prepared to allow neighbouring farms access to the farm and to their decision-making process. A proven, effective method of knowledge transfer with a farmerled, farmer-centred and farmerdriven agenda, the programme is to be expanded to a total of 20 farms with a series of launches running from York at the end of October, to Huntingdon in mid-December, taking in Wales and Scotland along the way. HGCA regional development head, Richard Laverick, described the move as: “A regional shift in our approach to engaging with cereals growers and a significant investment
in order to deliver it. It is farmer participation, collaboration and review of decision taking that makes this a successful approach. “Business improvement is a crucial part of the programme. With grain at prices not seen for four years, it has become even more important for farmers to understand their costs of production. A survey carried out by HGCA in 2013 indicated that, of growers questioned, only 13% knew their costs per tonne,” said Mr Laverick. Launch events for the eight new monitor farms are to be held as follows: • York: David Blacker, 31 October 2014 • Bath: Rob Addicott, 4 November 2014 • Winchester: Ian Cammack, 6 November 2014 • Stowmarket: Brian Barker, 14 November 2014
• Berwick-upon-Tweed: Richard Reed, 18 November 2014 • Newport, Shropshire: Sam Watson-Jones, 2 December 2014 • Cardiff: Julian Radcliffe, 4 December 2014 • Huntingdon: Russell McKenzie, 11 December 2014 Each monitor farmer will be in the scheme for three years, hosting meetings of local growers to share best practice and knowledge. The monitor farmers, their steering group and associated HGCA arable business groups will deliver benchmarking activity and peer review of decision-making on farm. While highlighting cost of production and efficiency, this will also bring a new focus on day-to-day farm decision-making. To attend one of these launch meetings, interested arable farmers should contact their HGCA regional manager.

N.P. Davies Agricultural Contractors
NP Davies was established by Nigel Davies in 1981 providing a quality and competitive service to farmers and landowners. Based on the borders of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire we can easily travel to other counties when required. A range of agricultural services are offered including, Forage Harvesting, Baling, Cultivation, Drilling, Manure Slurry Digestate and Compost Spreading, Machinery Hire and Contract and Share Farming. Haylage, Hay, Silage, Straw and Maize are available for sale all through the year. Second hand machinery is also purchased and refurbished during winter months, and maintenance work is carried out for local farmers. This service along with fabrications are growing year on year. Ensuring crops are planted and harvested with precision during the few days contractors are on-farm is 26
vital. The importance of the short period on each farm to ensure good quality forage for livestock has been the driving force for Shropshirebased forage contractor Nigel Davies and his team. “Our aim has always been to complete the job to a very high standard whilst remaining competitive, rather than to be the cheapest operation”. A perfect operation is key to farmer’s profits, because a rushed job will mean forage quality suffers, resulting in a lower palatable feed. Mr Davies runs NP Davies Agricultural Contractors who are National Association Agricultural Contractors members with wife Julie and a dedicated team of full and regular part-time staff. Mrs Davies is largely responsible for keeping the company’s administration up to date as well as doing essential runs for consumables. Son Andrew, having studied Agricultural
Engineering at Harper Adams as well as undertaking contracting work in New Zealand and the US, now works for Agco. Daughter Samantha studied Land Management at Harper Adams, and is now working for Smiths Gore having recently achieved MRICS. Both still drive for the business. Muck spreading and ground preparations for spring crops start the years’ work load. “From April we drill maize with a precision drill capable of placing micro and bulk fertiliser with the seed. We gained a lot experience sowing sugar beet with a precision planter across the region for 20 years. Maize requires a good level seedbed, the seed depth and seed spacing in the rows are also critical. I started with a small acreage of maize against a much larger acreage of sugar beet which was a huge slice of our annual work, but the closure of the local beet factory in 2007 means maize has

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL become the main crop”. This main focus on forage production means that Mr Davies has been able to make investments into this area to improve the service on offer. “Critical factors are chop length at harvest, dry matter, grain shatter and ensiling technique. I still actively drive with my staff and it is not uncommon to have a farm’s nutritionist, seed supplier or a machinery manufacturer on site looking at the quality of forage going off the field and into the clamp thanks to the good reputation we have gained”. N P Davies use high capacity triple mowers powered by high horse power reverse drive tractors. Grass can be turned by 10 rotor models depending on the dry matter required by the customer. Grass is raked with twin and quad rotor rakes depending on ground conditions and density of crop and by precision chopping, the grass can be compacted more efficiently creating a highly palatable feed. Wholecrop is a starch based, high dry matter and energy feed and can be fed to a range of animals. N P Davies use a direct cut header to forage all wholecrop, this is to ensure no contamination or loss of grain. A wholecrop processor is used with specialist wholecrop rollers which run at fine tolerances to make sure all grain is split. This is key to making a quality feed and cannot be compared to foraging without a crop processor. N P Davies specialises in maize foraging, key areas during the professional service include harvesting at the right dry matter, achieving a correct chop length, cracking the grain and last but not least consolidating the clamp. This is an area that NP Davies strive to
set themselves apart from the competition. Whether a tractor or loading shovel is used, or in some cases both depending on quantity of product going into the clamp the clamp dictates the speed of the forager. N P Davies prides itself on offering every customer the best possible precision chopped forage. By having better quality silage, additional feed and concentrates could be reduced. The silage made in just a few days could feed cows for a usual six month winter or more. For maximum profitability within this time cow intakes need to be improved and this would only be possible with highly palatable feed. The Kernal processor used in the forager for maize and wholecrop was imported especially to achieve a superior grain shatter. A range of different additives can be applied within the forage harvesting process if required.
Many of the Claverley-based business’ customers have increased their acreages in response to improvements in varieties, forage quality and the move to larger, if fewer, dairy herds. Mr Davies also supplies grass and maize direct to dairy and beef farmers in the area. Being involved with the Maize
Growers Association and seed suppliers I’ve followed the technical updates to ensure we are on top of the job. Claas harvesters are used extensively, with Mr Davies researching various technological advances to help improve forage quality. The characteristics of harvested maize for AD are different to that of a forage. Mr Davies has visited many AD plants in the UK and on the continent, I see the AD market being a big player. I can see maize and rye grass being used in arable rotations, growing these break crops looks appealing and is a good alternative. Also moving with the times is the company’s haylage business. Producing haylage for the equine market is rapidly replacing hay says Mr Davies says. Haylage has much lower dust and a higher nutrient value. That removes the need for
owners to soak fodder before feeding and cuts the need for additional hard feeds. About 120 acres is grown annually which is stored and then dispatched in loads varying from 20 bales taken by individual horse owners through to artic loads for large livery and working yards.

We are very keen to develop the haylage market. For the grower it takes out much of the risk in waiting for that window in summer to cut, dry and bale hay. In between the main maize and haylage contracting periods the company undertakes a range of arable and grassland duties. Baling services are centred around two sizes of baler the 3x3 bale measuring 80x90cm at up to 8 foot long and the “quadrant” size bale measuring 120x70cm at up to 8 foot long. The balers can bale straw, haylage, hay, silage and miscanthus. Balers are equipped with moisture meters. N P Davies prides themselves on good quality bales. Also wrapping can be done as a part job or part of the baling operation, from 4 to 8 layers can be supplied and applied by our wrappers depending on the choice of the customer. All bales can also be stacked and transported to the customer requirements. Ploughing is the main primary cultivation carried out by N P Davies, 5 and 6 furrow ploughs are used and these can be set up depending on previous and next crop type. Subsoiling and discing can be
done together or separately, with or without a packer roller depending on the requirements. For germination a double set of discs can be used, for subsoiling eight legs can be used over a 4 metre section, or for a complete tilth 4 to 8 legs can be used, two sets of discs and a packer. For secondary cultivation a range of power harrows can be used, a 6 metre hydraulic folding power harrow does the bulk of the work, with the ability to call on a 3 and 4 metre power harrow also. Manure, slurry and digestate spreading is an area of the business that is growing, as farmers look to focus on their cattle. High specification machines are used to make sure that spreading of manure is accurate. For chicken manure spreader plates can be used to ensure an accurate spread. Compost can also be supplied and spread. Tractor hire is available with operator and fuel with 100-300hp tractors, also manure spreaders are available with or without tractor and operator with the option of spreader plates. A 360 degree excavator is available for hire with or without
operator, the 13 tonne machine is a multi purpose machine which can be used for a range of tasks from ditching to digging and general groundworks. This particular excavator can be supplied with a range of buckets. Road building and amenity services are also areas of the business seeing an expansion, road building has become more popular from farmers looking to improve cattle welfare, or install new tracks for better access or just improving old tracks. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff that include a number of local farmers’ sons who join us year-on-year for busy periods. That is important for customers as the drivers are the face of the company when going in and out of farms during forage harvesting and clamping. The fact we run a fleet of Fendts encourages drivers to continue working for us as they like the reliability and comfort. And from my point of view, Fendts are also economical and have very strong resale values. Mr Davies’ experience and investment in maize grain processing technology will enable customers to benefit. Other added value benefits for the customer include trailers running on low ground pressure tyres and high capacity and efficient machinery. Year-round demand for a quality product produced during a few days of intensive, efficient and accurate work by the NP Davies’ team will once again pay dividend.

Forage break aids blackgrass control
Growing a forage break-crop such as Lucerne, grass or a grass/red clover mix could be a useful strategy for blackgrass control, particularly on more marginal
sites with less combinable yield potential. Sowing a forage break between cereals has many benefits according to Rod Bonshor of Oliver Seeds.
“Frequent mowing over two to three years represses blackgrass growth, reducing weed seed production by as much as 90%. At the same time, deep rooting legumes promote good soil structure and boost natural fertility by fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Lucerne is ideally suited to light free-draining soils at pH7, yields up to 13tDM/ha/year over the first two years and produces a high protein cash crop that can be sold to dairy and beef farmers. Red clover, sown on its own or in a ryegrass mix, can produce up to 19tDM/ha/year of high-quality, protein-rich forage.
Flea beetle feeding frenzy in oilseed rape
Wet, warm soil conditions have brought a rapid flush of volunteer rape seedlings and a feeding frenzy for flea beetles. Growers are reporting large numbers of flea beetles seen in trailers when harvesting their remaining oilseed rape, a possible indication of the high pest pressure the new crop will face.
34
Field technical manager Simon Roberts, of Syngenta, warns growers will need to keep a close watch on emerging seedlings this season, and be ready to tackle pests. The leaf damage caused by flea beetle can occur incredibly quickly and be extremely destructive. If conditions remain hot and dry after emergence, with any check in crop growth, the damaged small plants can quickly shrivel and die.

Farmers reaping the benefits of the sun Ground Mount verses Roof Mount – The Popularity of the Solar Panel As the Feed In Tariff rolls into its fourth year of operation, the interest in Renewable Energy seems to only be gaining momentum. With Solar PV systems making up 87% of the total number of energy installations in the United Kingdom (OFGEM Dec 2013), it would appear that people are reaping the benefits of the power from the Sun. The South West is the largest producers of Solar Energy, producing 4.36 MW in 2013 alone (OFGEM Dec 2013). Of course, there are obvious reasons why the South West is the most ideal location to install a Solar PV System, or even a solar farm with the most access to sunlight in the UK, however, there is nothing to prevent any business from seizing the rewards of a renewable energy system. Many people are often concerned about whether their land gets enough sunlight to warrant a Solar PV system, however, the panels only require daylight and not sunlight to generate power.
36
A common myth surrounding Solar PV is that the land or roof of a property must face due south. However, current installations show that a 13% annual return is still possible with installations that face East/West. Another discussion which occurs when discussing Solar PV generation is whether a Roof Mounted PV system or Ground Mounted system is better. The truth is that there are benefits of both types of system and one is not necessarily better than the other. A Ground Mounted PV system enables a farm or business to make the use of spare land that cannot be used for other purposes, generating money it would not ordinarily produce. Farmers with small livestock such as sheep or chickens can still let the animals use the field as the height of the system will not interfere their grazing. Ground Mounted PV systems also enable large scale installations to take place which are capable of powering large businesses whilst making money by exporting unused electricity back to the grid. Additionally, there will always be room for expansion with a Ground Mounted system as a business develops or as profit is made. Bowler Energy have installed 2.3MW of Ground Mounted solar panels since the company started in 2011. When this figure
is compared the 3.2MW of Roof Mounted Solar fitted in the same time, it would appear that Roof Mounted is a slightly more popular option. This is likely to be a result of the company initially marketing roof mounted panels to fit on the top of existing chicken sheds on our freerange farms, from there we have developed out business to provide other types of renewable energy system. Another reason for the popularity of the Roof Mounted PV system is that it does not take up any extra land. Therefore businesses based on large scale industrial sites can benefit from a PV system which will still generate enough energy to power but not take up any additional space. The Roof Mounted PV system can often fall within ‘permitted development’ meaning that no planning permission would be required to install a system 50kW or below as long as there is a 1m spacing between the panel and the edge of the roof. Solar PV Systems are consistently going to be the most popular option of Renewable Energy because they are the most accessible. The Roof Mount verses Ground Mount decision will always remain down to the client’s personal preference and location. But one thing many people who have a Solar PV system can be sure of it that the return on investment and the reduction in energy bills is enough to encourage anyone to take the first steps towards a Solar PV system of their own.

Ernest Fenton is an arable and sheep farmer in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He also runs an ice rink for curling and, in March 2012, had a 50kW roof-mounted solar PV system installed by Bowler Energy on a new, purpose built barn. As you can imagine, maintaining an ice rink requires a massive amount of electricity. For Ernest the deciding factors in pursuing a solar installation were the income from the feed-in tariffs and the ability to moderate his electricity costs for the next twenty years. The idea behind the purpose built barn was so that a roof-mounted system could be installed at the optimum angle to gain maximum output – and the barn itself provides a useful storage area. This could not have been gained from a groundmounted array and it helped to make the project more viable. Before awarding the contract to Bowler Energy, Ernest did his research and contacted other solar PV installers, but he says that some of them were not very good at responding to the difficult questions that he asked, whereas Bowler Energy’s Eddie Chadfield was always at the end of the phone with answers to his questions. Ernest knew Bowler Energy were a longestablished company and the quotation was competitive, so it seemed a good choice to go with them. Planning permission was required for the installation which Bowler Energy dealt with as part of the package. The installation itself was very speedy – in fact Ernest recalls the installation team were working against the clock to get the system installed and commissioned before
the tariff reduction came into effect, which they did. All in all, the entire process from initial contact to completed and commissioned PV system took five months. Ernest has been very pleased with his new PV system. It has lowered his reliance on electricity consumption from the grid, which is quite significant considering the amount of electricity required to maintain the ice rink. Ernest used to only open the ice rink during the winter months but since the installation of the PV array he has been able to extend the opening season to include spring and autumn. Previously the cost of keeping the ice cool would have made this financially prohibitive but now that Ernest has less reliance on bought-in electricity, he can afford to use his own electricity produced by his solar panels to move his business forward. “Electricity consumption is heading in the right direction,” says Ernest. “The feed-in tariff income has helped to support the farm, which has been a godsend during these last few months. We would be in a very different position now if it wasn’t for that”. Ernest now has a full twelve months of production data available and can see that only one month out of twelve the panels performed under target – for the other eleven months the panels were either on or above target. Says Ernest “I have a friend on the south coast who has an installation the same size as mine on one of his dairy buildings. We compare output readings and every
month so far mine has beaten his by at least 10% and sometimes as much as 15%!” As part of the package Ernest opted to have a solar logger fitted, which is a device offered by Bowler Energy on all its PV installations to enable the client to monitor the output of their panels. The solar logger even alerts the client if output falls below a certain level. This can be particularly useful in the event of a malfunction which could otherwise go unnoticed until the next quarterly meter reading was due, by which time the financial loss would be considerable. Ernest is also very happy with the back-up support received from Bowler Energy. To illustrate this he talks about a phone call he had from Bowler Energy about twelve months after the PV system was installed. “I received a parcel at the farm containing three brand new inverters. Eddie explained that Bowler Energy had experienced some problems on arrays with these particular inverters fitted. The supplier admitted they had a faulty batch and Bowler Energy negotiated to have all inverters which could potentially be affected replaced at no cost to the client. This is forward thinking and I am pleased that Bowler Energy has provided me with this level of service as you don’t know there is a problem with an inverter until it is too late. Therefore they have taken the necessary steps to prevent this happening on my site.”

season Defra appeal ahead of slug pellating rgrowth As arable farmers gear up for the annual slug blitz Defra is appealing to producers to adhere to metaldehyde stewardship requirements and help maintain availability of key pesticides. Defra water quality spokesman, Matthew Hampshire, said: “Our objectives are to address metaldehyde exceedances in drinking water to aim to comply with water quality legislation, as well as to minimise burdens on the agricultural and crop protection industry by keeping as many pesticide products on the market as possible.” The Environment Agency’s Jo Kennedy added: “A UK wide withdrawal of metaldehyde would
be an absolute last resort. It’s not a course of action the EA currently supports or wishes to see. We are focussed instead on working with other regulators and industry to find a more targeted, risk based way of tackling the problem.” Dr David Cameron, chairman of the Metaldehyde Stewardship Group said the season ahead will be crucial. “It’s easy to find out if the land receiving slug pellet treatment is at risk by visiting the Environment Agency’s website www.wiyby.co.uk. Simply enter the postcode and if the land is within a hatched area, click on it to find out if metaldehyde is an identified risk. “Field risk factors for metaldehyde
can be summed up as slope - the land’s topography-, stream proximity to a watercourse, and soil type - with heavier, under-drained soils most affected.” For more information and details of the current pilot projecting assessing the feasibility of field-based slug pellet substitution, visit www.getpelletwise.co.uk
Protect maize before its get too tall relatively recently, however climatic conditions and the increase in industrial maize cropping is expected to see the incidence worsening. Syngenta field technical manager, Simon Roberts, warns: “For many, the height of plants is such that now is the last opportunity to spray a preventative fungicide using conventional farm sprayers without causing damage.” After a slow start, most maize crops have been growing incredibly well, but recent heavy rain and thunderstorms across southern and eastern England could trigger the onset of foliar diseases. Cool, wet or humid conditions typically result in more 43
serious loss of green leaf area caused by eyespot and leaf blight, at a time when crops should be growing at their fastest. Northern leaf blight (Helminthosporium turcicum) has only been identified in the UK

Quality late season grass essential to finish lambs Grazing on grass leys with mixed swards including 30% white clover can improve grazing intakes by 20-30% and improve growth rates by 50g per head per day Having weaned all lambs, attention then turns to pushing lamb growth rates and getting them off the farm. However with the recent downturn in market lamb price, establishing the best and most cost effective way to achieve this is on the minds of many producers. But finishing lambs does not have to mean reaching for the feed bag alone. Grazed grass is the cheapest available feed on farm and with careful planning and management can be the main driver in lamb growth and finishing to provide the largest profit margins. Pasture selection for grazing lambs is an essential part of influencing lamb performance. When comparing young grass leys containing a high proportion of ryegrass with permanent pastures predominantly made up of weed grasses, the nutritional value of grazed grass differs significantly. Favourable perennial ryegrass on average provides 11.7MJ/ME/kgDM at 73% D-value, whereas common meadow grass varieties commonly found in permanent pasture only provide 9.8MJ/ME/kgDM at 61% Dvalue. In practical terms, lamb performance on permanent pastures could be up to 50% lower than on new grass leys. In rotational grazing systems and where silage aftermath is being utilised to finish lambs, grass quality 46
and dry matter reaches its optimum balance 18-25 days following the last grazing or cut. At this point sward height should be 6-8cm to ensure adequate grass supply and maximise utilisation by the grazing lamb. Protein is the major driver in lamb growth. Providing sufficient clover in the grazing sward will not only offer a boost to lamb performance, but also sustain grazing supply through mid to late season when grass growth begins to slow down and provide a higher level of minerals and trace elements than grass alone. Establishing mixed swards with 30% white clover can improve grazing intakes by 20-30% which combined with higher levels of protein can improve lamb growth rates by over 50g/head/day and consistently provide quality grazing throughout the season. With 30% clover grass swards fixing up to 100-150kgN/ha/year
(80-120unitsN/ac/year), the opportunity to sustain grass growth throughout the season without the need for intensive fertiliser applications also highlights the benefits of clover in the sward and selecting small and medium sized white clovers will ensure persistency despite hard sheep grazing. Through careful management of grass growth and particular attention to inclusion of clover in the sward it is possible to finish a high proportion of lambs off grass before resorting to concentrate supplementation. Therefore maximising financial return from the lamb crop. A good quality late summer application of soil conditioner and P + K will thicken swards, improve plant and soil nutrient reserves ready for spring, promote clover and enable extended grazing this autumn.

Mendham farming family so proud of champion Mystique A long-established farming family are proud to have won a string of prizes with their home-bred Limousin X, Mystique culminating in them sweeping the board at the Aylsham Show. Gary Kent, 47, a third generation farmer at Mendham, on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, returned from the bank holiday event jubilant after the 18-month-old heifer won commercial champion and interbreed continental champion awards before finally being crowned supreme beef interbreed champion. Earlier in the year the heifer won the commercial champion award at the Hadleigh Show in May and best Suffolk born and bred at the Suffolk Show. Next up was the Wayland Show, where Mystique claimed the commercial champion and reserve supreme champion trophies. Gary, whose father James, 76, moved to Mendham in 1939 at the age of one, said: “A friend persuaded me to start showing cattle seven years ago and told me I would quickly get hooked.
“I had always hoped that one day we would breed a champion and this year was our year. It is very unusual for a commercial animal to win such a prestigious award and the whole family are very proud of our achievements.” Showing cattle has become a real family affair with Gary’s son Hayden, 13, regularly taking part in young handlers’ events at shows in the region while his niece, Juliette Tompkins, has also had successes as
a young handler over the past few years. Kent beef is regularly available at Bramfield Meats, local butchers and restaurants in the Waveney Valley area, including the Sir Alfred Munnings Hotel and Public House in Mendham. Gary, who farms 650 acres, taking in both counties, said their plan now was to get Mystique in calf and hopefully breed the next generation champion.
New Welsh TB restrictions from September New TB movement restrictions are to be introduced in Wales next month, although to minimise disruption to cattle keepers, the Welsh Government has introduced temporary measures called Interim Land Association Management (ILAM) arrangements. Cattle moving within Sole Occupancy Authorities (SOAs) will be subject to pre-movement testing from the 30 September 2014. However, herd keepers who previously had a SOA exemption may
now apply for permission to move their animals between linked pieces of land within a 10 mile radius, without testing, as long as certain criteria are met. Farmers wishing to apply for an ILAM should, in the first instance, contact their vet. All successful ILAM applications will continue until new arrangements come into force but farmers will be required to reapply for an ILAM if there are any changes in circumstance.

Reducing Ketosis Risk
A new liquid supplement for fresh calved cows is designed to deliver rapidly available energy and essential nutrients to reduce the risk of ketosis, an increasing problem in high yielders due to negative energy balance during the transition period. Farm-O-San Pro-Keto, a supplementary dietetic feed from Trouw Nutrition GB, provides extra energy from glycerine and propylene glycol plus niacin, choline and vitamin B12 to support liver function. An easily poured liquid, Pro-Keto should be fed during the last 10 days pre-calving and for the first 3-6 weeks of lactation at a rate of 250ml per cow per day. It can be top dressed onto forage, incorporated into mixed rations and is also suitable for feeding through robots.

Dairy & beef producers need BVD advice An inconsistent approach to the cattle disease Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) across England and Wales has raised veterinary concerns and brought a call for more targeted advice to help dairy and beef farmers tackle this complicated infection, reports Karen Brewer. James Russell, from independent vets McMurtry & Harding, said: “BVD is a serious, industry wide problem and one that farmers are clearly aware of, but much work needs to be done in providing practical advice about how they tackle the virus in their herds.“ Presenting results from the Farming Against BVD survey at Novartis Animal Health’s Surrey headquarters on Thursday 18 September 2014, Mr Russell said that while over 70% of respondents have a herd health plan incorporating BVD: “It is deeply concerning that 49% of farmers questioned had not tested their herd for BVD in the last 12 months and of those that did, 83% did not test their young stock. So whilst farmers may be aware of BVD, there appears to be a disconnect between awareness and practical activity in the detection and then eradication of infection from their herds.” Although effective vaccination against BVD has been available for the last two decades, the disease continues to cause significant problems; with infected cattle suffering from abortion, infertility and suppressed immune systems, leading to poor productivity. It was these issues that stimulated
54
Farming Against BVD panel members (L to R) James Russell (vet practitioner, McMurtry & Harding), Caroline Dawson (Novartis), Tony Brooks (herd manager, Brighthams Farm), Professor Joe Brownlie (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, chairman of BVD Scientific and Technical Working Group), Dr Peter Nettleton (fellow of the Moredun Research Institute – not pictured).
Novartis, in conjunction with the Royal Veterinary College and independent vets McMurtry & Harding, to initiate the Farming Against BVD survey, which questioned 301 dairy and beef farmers from every region of England and Wales, representing over 70,000 head of cattle. One of the most significant findings is the attitude of farmers towards testing and subsequent failure to identify Persistently Infected (PI) livestock within their herd. Any calf from a BVD PI cow will itself be born persistently infected with the virus and cannot be cured. As a result, future vaccination of this animal is rendered ineffective and it will become a source of the virus, spreading infection within the herd. Given the potential for such cattle to become reservoirs of infection within a herd, failure to test, identify and then deal with PI livestock represents the most significant problem facing the industry when trying to eradicate BVD.
Professor Joe Brownlie, from the Royal Veterinary College, voiced his worry that 39% of farmers who found BVD present in their herd did not then go on to test for PI’s. “Of the 61% of farmers that did do follow up tests, one third found one or more PI’s within the stock holding.” He said the disease can be hidden and farmers could be in the dangerous position of potentially missing PI animals that are in their herd; PI’s that can continue to spread the BVD virus amongst other cattle and pass on their PI status to any calves they produce. It is hugely important to be thorough and consistent in your testing as part of an agreed herd health plan.” The project, aimed at increasing farmer awareness and understanding of the virus, has been driven by a select panel of industry experts and indicates that action needs to be taken to educate farmers about what to do once BVD and, most significantly, PI's are discovered amongst a herd.

FARMERS UK LIVESTOCK NEWS
Livestock farmers face intake challenge UK livestock farmers look to be facing poorer quality grass and wholecrop silages this season as Karen Brewer reports a major challenge in getting cows to eat enough to push winter production. Dairy farmers especially may be struggling to maintain winter milk yields with 2014 grass silages both wetter and lower in energy than last year. In the majority of cases second cut is better than first cut, due to a combination of harvesting conditions and the quality of material harvested, many first cuts comprising more mature grass as wet weather delayed spring harvests. Average results from analysis of
thousands of first and second cut grass and over 500 wholecrop samples by Trouw Nutrition have been compared against last year’s crops (see table). According to ruminant manager Adam Clay the results show silages made this year are worse than last year and actually poorer quality than the silage made in 2012, a year characterised by poor production over the winter months. “The intake factor for first cuts is 12.9% lower than last year, which means cows will be less enthusiastic about consuming high quantities. This, coupled with lower quality means that milk yield from forage potential will be significantly reduced. Second cut intake potential is marginally lower than in 2013.”
He says it is vital farmers look at the intake potential of their silage and plan accordingly. “Two silages of the same ME but different intake potential will feed very differently and this will have a huge bearing on performance. Increasing concentrates will help offset the reduced production from forage, which will be helped by the current lower prices. This will need to be carefully monitored to ensure that rumen health is not compromised, especially as many silages are wetter with increased acid loading. Diets should be formulated to allow cows to achieve high energy intakes without excess rapidly fermentable carbohydrates, which would increase the risk of rumen acidosis.”

John Deere 1110E Forwarders now Equipped with Intelligent Boom Control John Deere 1110E Forwarders now Equipped with Intelligent Boom Control Optional feature enables faster cycle times and more precise operation MOLINE, Illinois (September 4, 2014) — Intelligent Boom Control (IBC) is now offered as an option on all of John Deere's 1110E Forwarders. This technological breakthrough significantly increases forwarder productivity and efficiency, while providing best possible fuel economy and boom lifetime. Intelligent Boom Control has been praised for its ability to operate the boom with
92
more precision, making it easier for the operator, and easier on the equipment as well. Using the IBC system, the operator controls the boom tip directly instead of controlling each of the independent boom joint movements manually. This makes boom operation accurate, fast and easy. By eliminating extra movements, this system also increases the durability of boom structures and hydraulic cylinders. These features significantly improve an operator's working speed, resulting in higher overall
productivity and lower costs. The IBC system can also accelerate the learning curve for operators. Intuitive and easy to learn to use, the technology reduces the amount of time it takes to become a skilled operator, resulting in less training time. John Deere's 1110E Forwarder with the IBC option is now available in North America. IBC is also offered as an option on all of John Deere's 1210E and 1510E Forwarders. Gator gets a makeover Following customer feedback, John Deere has introduced a number of additional new features on the XUV 855D Gator 4x4 utility vehicle for 2013. These include a digital instrument cluster, a bigger capacity 55A alternator and a much larger 27.6-litre fuel tank, to enable longer working days. The dash-mounted instrument cluster displays the odometer, ground speed, fuel level and coolant temperature, engine rpm, a clock and the four-wheel drive indicator. It can be adjusted for different tyre sizes to ensure that the ground speed is accurately shown, particularly when using sprayer or spreader attachments, or driving on the road. Engine braking has also been improved, to provide better performance in hilly conditions. The vehicle’s descent control system has been redesigned to enable the clutch to stay engaged, providing more controlled deceleration down to around 3mph. In addition, the continuously v a r i a b l e transmission (CVT) intake now draws in 50 per cent more air to reduce heat, as well as the amount of water ingested by the CVT system and the clutches. This leads to less belt slippage and improved durability overall.
This follows the introduction of a new electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) system earlier this year, which is now standard on the XUV 855D Gator with olive & black livery, and optional on the green & yellow version. The 25hp XUV 855D Gator has a top speed of 32mph (52kph) and features true on-demand four-wheel drive, activated by a dash-mounted electronic switch, and all-round suspension, adjustable at the rear. Ground clearance is 267mm (11in), total payload is 635kg and towing capacity is 680kg. The Gator’s standard four post ROPS frame can be optionally upgraded to a deluxe full glass cab if required, and further options include tool carriers and cargo box dividers, a front mounted load rack, a bull bar and side extensions. A rear bumper and horn are now standard.

New McCormick dealer in Suffolk admits he was reluctant to even consider adding a tractor franchise to the business having dropped another make a few years ago. Agri-Hire is a family owned business, established in 1986 to hire out cultivation equipment to local farmers and now probably the largest muck spreader hire operation in the country.
Agri-Hire, currently based at Bramford, Ipswich, but soon moving to new premises close by,
is to be the Suffolk dealer for McCormick tractors, taking on sales, service and parts support.
Managing director Tim Hubert said McCormick compact and farm tractors will join the hire fleet. Tractor sales will run alongside Agri-Hire’s large Dowdeswell plough dealership and implements from several other manufacturers, including Standen Pearson, McConnel, Shelbourne Reynolds and Major Equipment.
Award for John Deere’s F1 gearbox John Deere’s innovative DirectDrive transmission was judged winner of the tractor category in the new International Machinery Manufacturers Awards (IMMA) presented at Cereals 2014 in June. Judges, drawn from the Agricultural Engineers’ Association, Institution of Agricultural Engineers and Royal Agricultural University, said: “The potential for greater efficiency and lower fuel use is great.” Significant fuel savings of up to four per cent, compared with currently available transmissions, have been measured on the test facilities at John Deere’s tractor factory in Mannheim and during independent field tests. The newly designed 24-speed DirectDrive transmission employs Formula 1 technology on John Deere’s six-cylinder 6R Series tractor range to combine the handling comfort of an infinitely variable shift transmission with exceptional efficiency. It is designed to deliver maximum
productivity with lower fuel consumption for tasks that need continuous power, such as ploughing and towing, pto work and road transport.
