Co-operative Food supports UK farmers with £1.5bn investment The Co-operative Food will be investing £1.5bn to source ownbrand British meat, produce and dairy products from the UK. This means that for the next three years, the business will increase the amount spent on UK produce from £450m a year to £500m. The initiative comes at a time when 90% of shoppers want supermarkets to sell more food from British farms. Customer research also shows that 81% of farmers believe retailers should support UK farming by only selling British meat and poultry. By committing to sourcing British products over and above alternatives for its own-brand meat, poultry, produce and dairy products, Co-operative Food will ensure that all own-brand meat it sells, except New Zealand lamb and Danish bacon, will be British. The same will apply to the meat and poultry used in its chilled ready meals, pies and sandwiches as well as its eggs and milk. Steve Murrells, chief executive of the Co-operative Food, said: “At the heart of our pledge is a commitment to be open and honest about where the food we sell comes from and to ensure that is it marketed and promoted

4

in a fair and transparent way. Trust in retailers has been dented in recent years and we hope our openness about where we source our meat, poultry and produce will encourage more retailers to follow suit. “Shoppers want to know about the origin of their products and if supermarkets import meat for use in products it is important that, as well as being identified on product labelling, in-store marketing should not seek to unwittingly mislead. Backing British must mean more than just rolling out the bunting.” The Co-operative Food will continue to support its farming groups, which were launched last year to enable it to build stronger relations with producers. The announcement followed the publication of the retailer’s new UK sourcing report – Born and Bred, which reveals that almost three out of four customers have more confidence in Britishsourced food, while 86% believe that food is more traceable when produced on British farms. Commenting on the report National Farmers’ Union president, Meurig Raymond, said: “The Born and Bred Report will allow consumers and farmers to monitor the Co-operative’s

performance against its sourcing commitments on an annual basis. This is of paramount importance to help instil confidence in consumers and producers alike in how the Cooperative operates continuously. “We look forward to working with the Co-operative in helping them further their support to British agriculture.” Environment secretary Elizabeth Truss, also praised the initiative. “This new commitment is a fantastic vote of confidence for the UK food and drink industry,” she said. “We know British consumers value products from this country, which have a world-renowned reputation for their high quality and traceability. These figures show shoppers want to buy more British – we’re supporting this by improving country of origin labelling which will be mandatory for lamb, pork, poultry and goat meat from April next year. “I would encourage all supermarkets to carefully consider the labelling on their products so their customers know exactly where their food comes from.”

Farming industry income rises

The UK agricultural industry is going from strength to strength in its contribution to economic growth, with new statistics revealing that increased production and prices boosted farming income to £5.6 billion last year. Total income from farming rose by £743 million - 15%, between 2012 and 2013 - as the industry stepped up its output of top-quality food including potatoes, poultry, milk and barley. Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said: These figures underline that food and farming really is a

powerhouse of the UK economy. From potatoes to poultry, our farming industry is showing that it is leading the way in producing top-quality food that is desired across the world. Our farming sector employs over 400,000 people and their success is helping us deliver the government’s longterm economic plan. We know British consumers value British food but we want UK farming to be a world-leader, exporting quality products far and wide as well as thriving on the home front. Our push for better food labelling across Europe is just one of a host of

ways we are working to help this crucial sector to grow and drive growth. The new data shows the overall value of livestock and livestock products increased by £1.1 billion to £14.2 billion in 2013. The value of the overall output of crops grew by nearly 5% to £9.4 billion in the same period. This was driven by a 38% increase in the value of the potato crop to just over £1 billion. Official statistics out today also show the net worth of the sector grew by £27 billion last year to £255 billion, primarily driven by higher land prices.

FARMERS UK NEWS

Farmers warned: Lock up your fertiliser (because it could be stolen by terrorists to make bombs) Police have launched a plan to keep farmers and growers informed about the risks of leaving fertiliser insecure in a bid to clamp down on extremism The quiet Welsh countryside might seem the least likely place for terrorists to plan their next attack. But police have given the farming community a stark warning about their role in staving off bombing raids on Britain's streets. Because farmers in Wales have been told about the dangers of leaving fertilizer unattended amid fears it could be used by terrorists to make bombs. Police have launched a plan to keep farmers and growers informed about the risks of leaving fertiliser insecure in a bid to clamp down on extremism. More than 90% of terrorist attacks in the UK have used homemade explosives, the majority of which have been fertiliser-based. Those using fertiliser commercially are being told how to store it securely to prevent it getting into the wrong hands. Farmers and growers are also urged to ensure that they report any loss or theft to the police. In September 38 forces signed up to a two month firearms surrender. The results of 18 forces show 3,429 items including firearms, air weapons, ammunition and other items such as pepper sprays and stun guns are now off the streets. 8

National Policing Lead for Gangs and Criminal Use of Firearms, Deputy Chief Constable Dave Thompson said: “We want to stop terrorists getting access to tools that they can use against UK citizens. “We need to make sure licensed gun-owners are securing their guns properly and remove guns from our streets and criminal networks so that terrorists cannot take advantage of them. “These operations won’t impact on conscientious and responsible firearms licence-holders but they will help to prevent weapons getting into the wrong hands. “We are making sure that those who handle large quantities of fertilisers understand how they can help us to prevent a terrorist attack through simple security measures. “Terrorists can use ordinary objects such as kitchen knives and other items as weapons so we need people

to report any concerns they have about anyone who is showing signs of extremism. “If you suspect it, report it. We can then intervene early and help. Your piece of information could hold the key.” Stephen James, National Farming Union (NFU) Cymru President said: “We have worked closely with National Counter Terrorism Security Office and other industry stakeholder to ensure there is clear guidance to the industry on how farmers should buy, store and audit the fertilisers they need for the everyday running of their businesses. “We are aware of the risks and we would urge farmers to continue to be vigilant and to follow the guidance on ammonium nitrate – and to report any suspicious activity to their local police or national counter terrorism hotline on 0800 789321.”

Report shows Nature Improvement Areas are boosting the economy and protecting wildlife

Wildlife, communities and local economies are reaping the benefits of England’s new Nature Improvement Areas, according to a report published today.

show how protecting our precious wildlife and outstanding landscapes can help grow our £30 billion rural tourism industry and create more jobs for hardworking people as part of our long term economic plan.

These wild habitats are now bigger, better connected, and more widespread, enabling wildlife such as butterflies and water voles to thrive. NIAs were first announced in the Natural Environment White Paper, the first government White Paper on the environment for 20 years, with the aim of creating 12 initial areas to reconnect nature on a significant scale through local partnerships.

Nature Improvement Areas (NIAs) set up by the government in 2012 have helped farmers to access EU grants, made valuable contributions towards university research and boosted the £210 billion rural economy.

Almost 19,000 hectares of threatened habitat - equivalent to 23,000 football pitches - have been created or restored since the NIAs were set up with £7.5 million of government funding.

They’ve also attracted outside investment – more than £730,000 from business partners and £7.8 million from NGOs and not-for-profit organisations.

Volunteers have spent 24,300 days - or 66 years in total - surveying wildlife and improving habitats, and more than 11,000 people have taken part in educational visits.

The NIA partnerships have improved access to the countryside, creating new public footpaths and connecting a network of paths which will span 540km by 2015.

Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said:

The 12 NIAs are spread throughout the country, from glistening sands of Morecambe Bay to the butterfly-filled South Downs in Hampshire.

The NIA partnerships are on track to restore, create, enhance and maintain a further 5,500 hectares by 2015, joining up people and communities with their landscapes.

A healthy environment and a healthy economy go hand in hand. These Nature Improvement Areas

Royal Welsh Winter Fair 2014: Farming leader warns on falling prices and the rural economy FUW say falling prices will have a noticeable effect on Wales' rural communities Falling lamb, beef and milk prices will have a “significant” knock-on effect on the rural economy in Wales, a farming union leader has warned. The comments, by Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) president Emyr Jones, came as the Royal Welsh Winter Fair at Llanelwedd celebrated its 25th anniversary. Mr Jones welcomed the announcement by Food Minister Rebecca Evans that 90% of agricultural subsidy Single Payments have been made to Welsh farmers on the first day of the payment window – but he warned of the financial challenges still facing the rural community. He said: “Once again the Welsh Government has hit a high payment target and we are grateful to all the staff who have worked hard to ensure money can be released on the first day of the payment window. “However, the combined impact of a lower Pillar 1 budget, 15% Pillar transfer and the lower sterling exchange rate means a fall in farm payments of more than 20% compared with last year.” He said recently-released farm business income figures for the 2013-14 financial year showed a welcome 10% rise in overall farm incomes. However, incomes on cattle and sheep farms for the same period were down by 11%, to £19,200. Mr Jones, speaking at the first day of the Winter Fair on Monday,

Bumper crowds at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair 2014

added: “Farm incomes for the current 2014-15 financial period are likely to be considerably lower again due to the fall in lamb, beef and milk prices, so the 20% plus fall in single payment receipts will be harshly felt. “With the rural economy being so reliant on agriculture, there is likely to be a significant knock-on effect for the wider community. “However, the cuts to the budget, pillar transfer and sterling exchange rate are beyond our control and the FUW therefore continues to emphasise that rural development funds be used in a meaningful way to build a more profitable industry.” Meanwhile, Robert William Jones, of Lower Argoed Farm, Llandilio Graban, Builth Wells, became the first-ever winner of the NFU Cymru/NFU Mutual Livestock Champion of the Year Award. The competition, in its first year, recognises the key role a good livestock manager can make to a

livestock farm and to the Welsh livestock industry as a whole. Robert farms in partnership with his wife, Llinos, where the main enterprises are sheep, cattle and grassland along with arable crops to support the livestock enterprise. Today, they own 81 hectares, rent 40 hectares and have hill rights to another 40 hectares with a livestock enterprise of 37 cattle and 700 ewes. Robert won £300 and a Royal Welsh Engraved Crystal Trophy, presented by Lyndon Edwards, chairman of NFU Cymru’s Livestock board. The Winter Fair organisers said there has been a record number of lambs placed in this year’s competitions. On Tuesday large crowds are expected to welcome Princess Anne on her first ever visit to the Winter Fair.

Countrywide Farmers to focus on it’s multichannel Retail, Turf and Amenity and LPG businesses Leading supplier of products, services and advice to the rural community, Countrywide Farmers, has announced the disposal of its Livestock Feed and Forage, Arable Products and Crop Marketing businesses for a total combined consideration of £18.5m. “This has been a difficult decision,” said John Hardman, Countrywide Farmers Chief Executive, “and comes at the end of a significant strategic review of how best we can deliver sustainable improvement in shareholder value.” Like UK farming, the Agri supply industry is rapidly evolving to cope with the changing global market and the challenges and opportunities this brings. To compete requires significant investment to create economies of scale and cost efficiencies and in the long term a more sustainable UK supply trade. “We have concluded that Countrywide Farmers can best serve its customers and shareholders by investing in our Countrystore network and multichannel platform rather than our direct to farm business,” continues Mr Hardman. “Our farm trading businesses have built a strong relationship over the years and this is reflected in the acquiring companies who are all market leaders in their own right.

12

They have been carefully selected by the Countrywide Board as being, we believe, the best fit for our customers and staff alike.” The Livestock Feed and Forage business, comprising compound and alternative feeds, fertilizer and forage seeds, is being sold to ForFarmers. The Arable business, which sells crop protection and cereal seed products is being sold to Hutchinsons and terms have been agreed for the sale of the Crop Marketing business to Openfield. The Countrywide teams within these businesses will transfer to the respective purchaser. The Countrywide Board believes the acquiring businesses will provide long term stability and wider career opportunities for the Countrywide teams as well as supporting them with the best products and service for their customers. Overall the sale of these businesses will affect around 80 staff. The disposals will allow the Company to focus and invest in their Countrystore retail network of 53 stores across England and Wales, its Energy business which supplies bulk LPG and bottled gas to the rural community and its Turf and Amenity business which is developing a strong market position. The Directors believe that Countrywide holds a competitive advantage in these

John Hardman

areas and that these three businesses have the potential to deliver long term growth. As announced in the Annual Report published in August 2014 a strategic review of our retail business, led by Berkley Partnership, has demonstrated a clear path for Countrywide Farmers to become the leading multichannel Country store business in the UK. The net funds received from these disposals will provide the financial resources to deliver this strategy, including the implementation of Project Fusion which will provide the operating platform to support this ambition. “We remain committed to UK farming,” says Mr Hardman “supporting farmers with over 7,000 agriculture products available in store, catalogue and on line, all reinforced by a dedicated field sales team. Our new focus and ability to invest will ensure we are well positioned to execute our strategy and to grow the business into a leading multichannel supplier to the UK’s rural community.” “I would like to thank all the staff who have worked within the businesses that we are selling. We are very grateful for their contribution and I sincerely hope that they will thrive following this new step for those businesses,” concludes Mr Hardman.

FARMERS UK NEWS AND DVERTORIAL

Keep looking hard to reduce those Feed Costs more, it can be done Over the last 3 months we have seen spot wheat prices drop to just under £100 in places, and then rally to around £120 now for spot movement for specific homes. Hipro Soya has been on offer as low as mid £270’s for May to October 2015, but spot prices are still trading around £335-340. Very good opportunities have been available at times for the likes of Wheat Distillers, Rapemeal, Maize Meal, Wheatfeed and moist feeds. This is all about being open and flexible, taking advantage of the deals when they are on offer. What to look for now with Proteins? • It feels that if the right deal comes along, there is plenty of business still to be done for this up and coming winter. • In the last article, we highlighted the size of the North American Soyabean crop, this feels like it will be bigger again. In the last 3 months we have seen the projected crop size go from 103.42mmt to 106.87mmt at the last USDA report – If anything reports suggest it will be a little higher than this (remember the 2013 crop was 89.51mmt which was viewed as good). • The spot Soya market, as already highlighted, is relatively expensive and tight in supply, so cover up to the New Year if not already and watch for opportunities in December to book forward business (May 15 onwards). We believe that the Soya price for May/Oct 15 and beyond will fall back towards the £270’s (depending on location and load size), and with a bit of lady luck better than that. This

year’s huge crops are too big not to present us with really good buying opportunities towards December. • If you have not covered spot Soya requirements, then at least look at other protein options. Rapemeal (Protected), Syrups and Moist Feeds are all offering potential to take some protein at very good value, which when balanced with your forages should give an opportunity to save costs. However, one product that must be considered, being high in energy and protein is the distillers grains coming from the UK ethanol plants – they have moved to a level that must be at least investigated, giving the potential to reduce costs now and throughout the winter. Cereals Given another very good year for world production of cereals, Maize and Wheat in particular, forward cover needs to be thought through now for any energy related products. The market continues to move in cycles, we are seeing that now with milk prices as you are all too well aware. It will happen again with all feed prices. The trick is covering at a time when the market feels it has run its course at the low end, and putting sensible cover down. • The current situation provides very good potential to look for opportunities to put cover in place through to April 2016. However, with this latest rally of around £15/mt on wheat, leave it for a month or two until things settle back. • When buying opportunities arise, chip away adding more cover slowly, up to 50% through to October 15 or even April 16. When you have done a

trade, be happy that you have contracted some of your forward requirements and concentrate on other aspects of running your business. • Cereals, wheat in particular, are around 30% down in price from a year ago, this lower price range will not last forever, underlying world demand is still good for commodities, we have just gone through two years of great supply – it will turn, so covering in the next month or two looks sensible. In summary, in a difficult period for milk production, it is hard to pull away from the hard reality of supply and demand of all commodities. We have had unprecedented supply of feed commodities, building up over the last two years, leading to a situation of much higher stocks of both energies and proteins. However, do not be lulled into a period of inactivity, these lower prices will pull in demand from other sectors such as ethanol production. Therefore, look at your current cover percentages, and if you are comfortable for this winter then fine. But be aware of spot opportunities for products you may not historically use, if you need to buy over the next few months – good buys are out there. Finally, keep an eye on the potential of covering product from May onwards next year. As outlined on both cereals and proteins it feels like we are close to the lower end of the cycle for both feed stocks. We would be surprised if the next two months will not offer some great buying potential for the 18 - 20 months beyond January 2015.

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL

N.P. Davies Agricultural Contractors

NP Davies was established by Nigel Davies in 1981 providing a quality and competitive service to farmers and landowners. Based on the borders of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire we can easily travel to other counties when required. A range of agricultural services are offered including, Forage Harvesting, Baling, Cultivation, Drilling, Manure Slurry Digestate and Compost Spreading, Machinery Hire and Contract and Share Farming. Haylage, Hay, Silage, Straw and Maize are available for sale all through the year. Second hand machinery is also purchased and refurbished during winter months, and maintenance work is carried out for local farmers. This service along with fabrications are growing year on year. Ensuring crops are planted and harvested with precision during the few days contractors are on-farm is 26

vital. The importance of the short period on each farm to ensure good quality forage for livestock has been the driving force for Shropshirebased forage contractor Nigel Davies and his team. “Our aim has always been to complete the job to a very high standard whilst remaining competitive, rather than to be the cheapest operation”. A perfect operation is key to farmer’s profits, because a rushed job will mean forage quality suffers, resulting in a lower palatable feed. Mr Davies runs NP Davies Agricultural Contractors who are National Association Agricultural Contractors members with wife Julie and a dedicated team of full and regular part-time staff. Mrs Davies is largely responsible for keeping the company’s administration up to date as well as doing essential runs for consumables. Son Andrew, having studied Agricultural

Engineering at Harper Adams as well as undertaking contracting work in New Zealand and the US, now works for Agco. Daughter Samantha studied Land Management at Harper Adams, and is now working for Smiths Gore having recently achieved MRICS. Both still drive for the business. Muck spreading and ground preparations for spring crops start the years’ work load. “From April we drill maize with a precision drill capable of placing micro and bulk fertiliser with the seed. We gained a lot experience sowing sugar beet with a precision planter across the region for 20 years. Maize requires a good level seedbed, the seed depth and seed spacing in the rows are also critical. I started with a small acreage of maize against a much larger acreage of sugar beet which was a huge slice of our annual work, but the closure of the local beet factory in 2007 means maize has

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL become the main crop”. This main focus on forage production means that Mr Davies has been able to make investments into this area to improve the service on offer. “Critical factors are chop length at harvest, dry matter, grain shatter and ensiling technique. I still actively drive with my staff and it is not uncommon to have a farm’s nutritionist, seed supplier or a machinery manufacturer on site looking at the quality of forage going off the field and into the clamp thanks to the good reputation we have gained”. N P Davies use high capacity triple mowers powered by high horse power reverse drive tractors. Grass can be turned by 10 rotor models depending on the dry matter required by the customer. Grass is raked with twin and quad rotor rakes depending on ground conditions and density of crop and by precision chopping, the grass can be compacted more efficiently creating a highly palatable feed. Wholecrop is a starch based, high dry matter and energy feed and can be fed to a range of animals. N P Davies use a direct cut header to forage all wholecrop, this is to ensure no contamination or loss of grain. A wholecrop processor is used with specialist wholecrop rollers which run at fine tolerances to make sure all grain is split. This is key to making a quality feed and cannot be compared to foraging without a crop processor. N P Davies specialises in maize foraging, key areas during the professional service include harvesting at the right dry matter, achieving a correct chop length, cracking the grain and last but not least consolidating the clamp. This is an area that NP Davies strive to

set themselves apart from the competition. Whether a tractor or loading shovel is used, or in some cases both depending on quantity of product going into the clamp the clamp dictates the speed of the forager. N P Davies prides itself on offering every customer the best possible precision chopped forage. By having better quality silage, additional feed and concentrates could be reduced. The silage made in just a few days could feed cows for a usual six month winter or more. For maximum profitability within this time cow intakes need to be improved and this would only be possible with highly palatable feed. The Kernal processor used in the forager for maize and wholecrop was imported especially to achieve a superior grain shatter. A range of different additives can be applied within the forage harvesting process if required.

Many of the Claverley-based business’ customers have increased their acreages in response to improvements in varieties, forage quality and the move to larger, if fewer, dairy herds. Mr Davies also supplies grass and maize direct to dairy and beef farmers in the area. Being involved with the Maize

Growers Association and seed suppliers I’ve followed the technical updates to ensure we are on top of the job. Claas harvesters are used extensively, with Mr Davies researching various technological advances to help improve forage quality. The characteristics of harvested maize for AD are different to that of a forage. Mr Davies has visited many AD plants in the UK and on the continent, I see the AD market being a big player. I can see maize and rye grass being used in arable rotations, growing these break crops looks appealing and is a good alternative. Also moving with the times is the company’s haylage business. Producing haylage for the equine market is rapidly replacing hay says Mr Davies says. Haylage has much lower dust and a higher nutrient value. That removes the need for

owners to soak fodder before feeding and cuts the need for additional hard feeds. About 120 acres is grown annually which is stored and then dispatched in loads varying from 20 bales taken by individual horse owners through to artic loads for large livery and working yards.

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL

We are very keen to develop the haylage market. For the grower it takes out much of the risk in waiting for that window in summer to cut, dry and bale hay. In between the main maize and haylage contracting periods the company undertakes a range of arable and grassland duties. Baling services are centred around two sizes of baler the 3x3 bale measuring 80x90cm at up to 8 foot long and the “quadrant” size bale measuring 120x70cm at up to 8 foot long. The balers can bale straw, haylage, hay, silage and miscanthus. Balers are equipped with moisture meters. N P Davies prides themselves on good quality bales. Also wrapping can be done as a part job or part of the baling operation, from 4 to 8 layers can be supplied and applied by our wrappers depending on the choice of the customer. All bales can also be stacked and transported to the customer requirements. Ploughing is the main primary cultivation carried out by N P Davies, 5 and 6 furrow ploughs are used and these can be set up depending on previous and next crop type. Subsoiling and discing can be

done together or separately, with or without a packer roller depending on the requirements. For germination a double set of discs can be used, for subsoiling eight legs can be used over a 4 metre section, or for a complete tilth 4 to 8 legs can be used, two sets of discs and a packer. For secondary cultivation a range of power harrows can be used, a 6 metre hydraulic folding power harrow does the bulk of the work, with the ability to call on a 3 and 4 metre power harrow also. Manure, slurry and digestate spreading is an area of the business that is growing, as farmers look to focus on their cattle. High specification machines are used to make sure that spreading of manure is accurate. For chicken manure spreader plates can be used to ensure an accurate spread. Compost can also be supplied and spread. Tractor hire is available with operator and fuel with 100-300hp tractors, also manure spreaders are available with or without tractor and operator with the option of spreader plates. A 360 degree excavator is available for hire with or without

operator, the 13 tonne machine is a multi purpose machine which can be used for a range of tasks from ditching to digging and general groundworks. This particular excavator can be supplied with a range of buckets. Road building and amenity services are also areas of the business seeing an expansion, road building has become more popular from farmers looking to improve cattle welfare, or install new tracks for better access or just improving old tracks. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff that include a number of local farmers’ sons who join us year-on-year for busy periods. That is important for customers as the drivers are the face of the company when going in and out of farms during forage harvesting and clamping. The fact we run a fleet of Fendts encourages drivers to continue working for us as they like the reliability and comfort. And from my point of view, Fendts are also economical and have very strong resale values. Mr Davies’ experience and investment in maize grain processing technology will enable customers to benefit. Other added value benefits for the customer include trailers running on low ground pressure tyres and high capacity and efficient machinery. Year-round demand for a quality product produced during a few days of intensive, efficient and accurate work by the NP Davies’ team will once again pay dividend.

It’s time for black-grass control with Atlantis WG

Forecasts for continued mild weather into November should focus growers’ minds on controlling black-grass this autumn, rather than relying on pre-em chemistry to ‘hold’ control over until spring. Bayer CropScience says the successful conclusion of the winter wheat drilling campaign, coupled with good establishment conditions, has favoured emergence of grass weeds such as black-grass and that there’s now a ‘golden opportunity’ to reduce this year’s black-grass populations significantly. “Controlling black-grass has always been difficult,” says herbicides development manager Gordon Anderson-Taylor in the company’s latest Technical Update, “but 2014 trials conducted by independent contractors and distributors showed that autumn is the time to be thinking about post34

emergence herbicide applications. “Weather forecasts into November predict that we’re unlikely to see any significant cold weather for two to three weeks, which means emerged black-grass will continue to grow and tiller. “Hoping to tackle large, well tillered black-grass plants with applications of Atlantis WG (mesosulfuron + iodosulfuron) in spring is tantamount to preparing yourself for a failed weed control programme,” he warns. “If you experienced poor control of blackgrass last season, don’t automatically assume you’ve got resistance to mesosulfuron – it’s more likely that the plant was just too big for the dose within Atlantis WG.” Results from ten UK trials during 2013-2014 showed that there was a 29% fall in efficacy between Atlantis WG applications made at GS11-13

and those made at GS23-25. “This drop-off in control is directly related to the increased size of the plant,” Dr Anderson-Taylor points out. “Since Atlantis WG was launched in 2003, the beginning of November has always been seen as its optimal application timing,” says Phillippa Overson, combinable crops campaign manager. “This year looks set to be a golden opportunity for growers to really get on top of blackgrass populations. “Little rainfall and above average temperatures over the next couple of weeks should provide some good spray windows,” she says, “particularly for those crops where black-grass is already well advanced. “You might still need to deal with cleavers and wild-oats in spring, but there’s good chemistry for those. You won’t get a second chance to deal a blow to black-grass, so take it now.”

Farmers reaping the benefits of the sun Ground Mount verses Roof Mount – The Popularity of the Solar Panel As the Feed In Tariff rolls into its fourth year of operation, the interest in Renewable Energy seems to only be gaining momentum. With Solar PV systems making up 87% of the total number of energy installations in the United Kingdom (OFGEM Dec 2013), it would appear that people are reaping the benefits of the power from the Sun. The South West is the largest producers of Solar Energy, producing 4.36 MW in 2013 alone (OFGEM Dec 2013). Of course, there are obvious reasons why the South West is the most ideal location to install a Solar PV System, or even a solar farm with the most access to sunlight in the UK, however, there is nothing to prevent any business from seizing the rewards of a renewable energy system. Many people are often concerned about whether their land gets enough sunlight to warrant a Solar PV system, however, the panels only require daylight and not sunlight to generate power.

36

A common myth surrounding Solar PV is that the land or roof of a property must face due south. However, current installations show that a 13% annual return is still possible with installations that face East/West. Another discussion which occurs when discussing Solar PV generation is whether a Roof Mounted PV system or Ground Mounted system is better. The truth is that there are benefits of both types of system and one is not necessarily better than the other. A Ground Mounted PV system enables a farm or business to make the use of spare land that cannot be used for other purposes, generating money it would not ordinarily produce. Farmers with small livestock such as sheep or chickens can still let the animals use the field as the height of the system will not interfere their grazing. Ground Mounted PV systems also enable large scale installations to take place which are capable of powering large businesses whilst making money by exporting unused electricity back to the grid. Additionally, there will always be room for expansion with a Ground Mounted system as a business develops or as profit is made. Bowler Energy have installed 2.3MW of Ground Mounted solar panels since the company started in 2011. When this figure

is compared the 3.2MW of Roof Mounted Solar fitted in the same time, it would appear that Roof Mounted is a slightly more popular option. This is likely to be a result of the company initially marketing roof mounted panels to fit on the top of existing chicken sheds on our freerange farms, from there we have developed out business to provide other types of renewable energy system. Another reason for the popularity of the Roof Mounted PV system is that it does not take up any extra land. Therefore businesses based on large scale industrial sites can benefit from a PV system which will still generate enough energy to power but not take up any additional space. The Roof Mounted PV system can often fall within ‘permitted development’ meaning that no planning permission would be required to install a system 50kW or below as long as there is a 1m spacing between the panel and the edge of the roof. Solar PV Systems are consistently going to be the most popular option of Renewable Energy because they are the most accessible. The Roof Mount verses Ground Mount decision will always remain down to the client’s personal preference and location. But one thing many people who have a Solar PV system can be sure of it that the return on investment and the reduction in energy bills is enough to encourage anyone to take the first steps towards a Solar PV system of their own.

Ernest Fenton is an arable and sheep farmer in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He also runs an ice rink for curling and, in March 2012, had a 50kW roof-mounted solar PV system installed by Bowler Energy on a new, purpose built barn. As you can imagine, maintaining an ice rink requires a massive amount of electricity. For Ernest the deciding factors in pursuing a solar installation were the income from the feed-in tariffs and the ability to moderate his electricity costs for the next twenty years. The idea behind the purpose built barn was so that a roof-mounted system could be installed at the optimum angle to gain maximum output – and the barn itself provides a useful storage area. This could not have been gained from a groundmounted array and it helped to make the project more viable. Before awarding the contract to Bowler Energy, Ernest did his research and contacted other solar PV installers, but he says that some of them were not very good at responding to the difficult questions that he asked, whereas Bowler Energy’s Eddie Chadfield was always at the end of the phone with answers to his questions. Ernest knew Bowler Energy were a longestablished company and the quotation was competitive, so it seemed a good choice to go with them. Planning permission was required for the installation which Bowler Energy dealt with as part of the package. The installation itself was very speedy – in fact Ernest recalls the installation team were working against the clock to get the system installed and commissioned before

the tariff reduction came into effect, which they did. All in all, the entire process from initial contact to completed and commissioned PV system took five months. Ernest has been very pleased with his new PV system. It has lowered his reliance on electricity consumption from the grid, which is quite significant considering the amount of electricity required to maintain the ice rink. Ernest used to only open the ice rink during the winter months but since the installation of the PV array he has been able to extend the opening season to include spring and autumn. Previously the cost of keeping the ice cool would have made this financially prohibitive but now that Ernest has less reliance on bought-in electricity, he can afford to use his own electricity produced by his solar panels to move his business forward. “Electricity consumption is heading in the right direction,” says Ernest. “The feed-in tariff income has helped to support the farm, which has been a godsend during these last few months. We would be in a very different position now if it wasn’t for that”. Ernest now has a full twelve months of production data available and can see that only one month out of twelve the panels performed under target – for the other eleven months the panels were either on or above target. Says Ernest “I have a friend on the south coast who has an installation the same size as mine on one of his dairy buildings. We compare output readings and every

month so far mine has beaten his by at least 10% and sometimes as much as 15%!” As part of the package Ernest opted to have a solar logger fitted, which is a device offered by Bowler Energy on all its PV installations to enable the client to monitor the output of their panels. The solar logger even alerts the client if output falls below a certain level. This can be particularly useful in the event of a malfunction which could otherwise go unnoticed until the next quarterly meter reading was due, by which time the financial loss would be considerable. Ernest is also very happy with the back-up support received from Bowler Energy. To illustrate this he talks about a phone call he had from Bowler Energy about twelve months after the PV system was installed. “I received a parcel at the farm containing three brand new inverters. Eddie explained that Bowler Energy had experienced some problems on arrays with these particular inverters fitted. The supplier admitted they had a faulty batch and Bowler Energy negotiated to have all inverters which could potentially be affected replaced at no cost to the client. This is forward thinking and I am pleased that Bowler Energy has provided me with this level of service as you don’t know there is a problem with an inverter until it is too late. Therefore they have taken the necessary steps to prevent this happening on my site.”

FARMERS UK NEWS

the future Potato Council sharpens focus to deliver forrgrowth Announcing a consultation on Potato Council’s new business plan at the Seed Industry event held in Perthshire 25 November, 2014, Potato Council chair Fiona Fell enthused about the AHDB Division’s new focus. “The potato arena is a challenging place to be in at the moment,” acknowledged Mrs Fell. “Changing consumer purchasing patterns coupled with an on-going oversupply at home and in Europe has resulted in tremendous volatility and severe downward price pressure.” The Potato Council team is listening to levy payers, analysing market dynamics and looking for ways to support potato producers in this tough and evolving market place. "An all year round, competitive supply of top quality British potatoes needs to be underpinned by innovative and cost effective storage. This new plan will take Sutton Bridge Crop Storage Research Centre forward, and funds will be committed to unlock external funding opportunities to refurbish and develop the storage research and knowledge transfer capability. Growing the value of the levy by exploring and winning matchfunding opportunities created under the Agri-Tech Strategy and RDPE will be fundamental. Potato Council has already submitted a comprehensive application to the EU for funding to promote fresh potatoes, hoping to double its budget for carefully targeted work. The new partnership with BordBia in Ireland if successful will yield vital funding from the EU 42

worth £1.5M over three years. “AHDB and Potato Council needs to concentrate sufficient resources on key activities, in order to create true impact,” highlighted Mrs Fell. To deliver the ambitious plan, Potato Council proposes a subinflation increase in levy of 1.96 per cent for 2015/16 which will require ministerial approval after a period of consultation. This represents £0.84/hectare for growers and £0.0036/tonne for purchasers. "We have looked critically at costs, and have managed to keep the increase below inflation whilst providing the necessary funds to continue to provide the unique activities and quality services that our levy payers have fed back that they value,” stressed Mrs Fell. We will be determining GB's capacity and willingness to fight back against European competition. With a 1.4Mt raw equivalent trade imbalance in 2013 and 1.4Mt of domestic production destined for secondary uses, the Potato Council team will be looking creatively to see where the opportunities lie. The plan will also deliver new formats and relevant tools for agronomists and advisors to ensure that new information and best practice gets to growers rapidly. Potato Council’s flagship event

BP2015, which uniquely draws the whole British supply chain together, will return to Harrogate at a new venue with a bigger footprint, 12 and 13 November 2015. “BP2015 will have a better environment to do business, will provide the capacity to allow further exhibitor numbers and provide an enhanced platform to seek out and discuss the innovations and knowledge that will underpin the potato industry going forwards,” noted Mrs Fell. Keeping it simple and making it efficient translates into value for money, according to Herefordshire grower and Potato Council Board member Bill Quan. “Difficult times demand strong leadership with a forward looking creative plan,” said Mr Quan. “As a recent newcomer to the board, I’ve been impressed with the team’s focus on value for money, strong financial discipline and cost-control. It means Potato Council will continue to deliver activity against agreed priorities.” The draft plan will be made available for levy payers to review and feedback their views on whether the plan addresses industry priorities. The consultation starts on 28th November, 2014 and runs for a seven week period. "Delivering the right tools and knowledge so that our levy-payers can operate the most efficient and sustainable businesses they can, is paramount, and is at the heart of the Potato Council's renewed approach," concluded Mrs Fell

FARMERS UK LIVESTOCK NEWS

Mycotoxins: less myth, more management via feed - forages, moist feeds, compound feeds and cereals – and also in bedding. Alltech mycotoxin testing (including grass silage, TMR, whole crop and brewers grains) • 206 Sample tested • 100% Contaminated It’s small wonder that mycotoxins not only create problems, but also breed myths believes Graeme Smith, National Sales Manager of Alltech UK. Toxic compounds produced by moulds and fungi, mycotoxins can be present where no mould is visible. When eaten by livestock, different mycotoxins cause different symptoms, yet combined, the same compounds can cause a totally new set of problems. The symptoms of a mycotoxin challenge can easily be mistaken for other health issues or masked by poor management. Most perplexing, there are a range of solutions available, some claiming what seem like magical properties. So where do we stand? Mycotoxins are clearly a complex challenge. But as with any confusing problem, the best recourse is scientific fact. So what do we know? The facts Extensive mycotoxin testing, using the Alltech 37+ programme, has shown that the majority of farm systems, and livestock, are exposed to a degree of mycotoxin challenge

46

• Up to 11 different types of mycotoxin on each sample • On average, more than 6 different groups of mycotoxin per sample The degree to which performance is affected will be based on how much contaminated feed is consumed. Also, for ruminants, the pH of the rumen is a factor – plus any other challenge to the cow’s immune system within the environment will exacerbate the effects. In dairy cows typical mycotoxin symptoms include: • Loose dung compared with others in the herd • Dung containing mucus tags or intestinal lining • Higher incidence of clinical mastitis • Lower limb swelling: front or back legs and/or teats • Higher degree of lameness • Daily fluctuation of individual milk yields • Silent heats • More repeat breeders due to early embryo mortality or abortions • General ill-thrift, lethargy and poor coat condition

The above symptoms, including soiled backs and rumps requiring greater levels of bedding material and the potential for raised bactoscan levels in milk, can lead to reduced productivity and ultimately profitability. They can also have implications for cow welfare and/or non-compliance with milk buyer and supermarket requirements. Management So, how best to manage this very real challenge? • Remove suspected feed. If you can afford to throw it away (and wish to identify it with 37+ testing) this should solve your problem. • Reduce the quantity fed. This can lead to prolonged use of infected feed/forage and can actually raise mycotoxin levels and the challenge experienced. • Feed suspected material to animals that are less susceptible. This involves the risk of feeding a known contaminated feed to a segment of your livestock. • Include a binder within the ration. This risk averse option needs to work quickly (mycotoxins can be in the blood stream within 20 minutes of being ingested) adsorbing and harmlessly removing mycotoxins to reduce the challenge faced. Which binder to choose? Over the last 3-5 years there have been a growing number of products entering the market that claim to deal with mycotoxins. So, what do you need your binder to do? With the results of Alltech 37+ testing showing a wide range of mycotoxins present in a wide range of feedstuff,

FARMERS UK LIVESTOCK NEWS

the ability to deal with a broad spectrum of mycotoxins would seem to be the no. 1 priority. This ability depends on what binders are made of and different binders, based on various raw materials are effective against varying types of mycotoxins. With a variety of names such as BioTransformers, Clay based and Live Yeast and with a myriad of claims, mycotoxin binders can present a confusing array of options. “In general terms” suggests Mr Smith “I would encourage farmers to ask a series of questions to their nutritionist or feed supplier to determine what solution might be best for their circumstances. • What mycotoxin challenge am I facing?

• What University level research is available to demonstrate that the product works in the animal species for which it is being recommended? • What University level research is available to demonstrate the mode of action of the product? • Are there any local testimonials to demonstrate farmer confidence? “In every case however I would encourage farmers to know what they are dealing with and routinely test their feedstuffs,” says Mr Smith Better business decisions In the end, it rests on doing your best to protect your animals’ performance and welfare - and making the best decision for your business. Which product will deal with the different types of

mycotoxin on the farm? And is the recommended inclusion rate similar to that at which research was conducted? However, to fully protect your investment and livestock, choose a product that will cover the broadest range of mycotoxins and base your decision on an understanding of which mycotoxins are present in feed and bedding. “We are still learning much about this hidden danger,” concludes Mr Smith, “and undoubtedly there will continue to be many conflicting messages, however, the science and testing methods are becoming much more robust providing vets and nutritionists with much greater knowledge and the tools to protect profits”.

Scottish lamb prices up slightly on 2013 Farm gate lamb prices are slightly ahead of last year according to the latest market update from meat promotion body Quality Meat Scotland (QMS). Stuart Ashworth, head of economic services at QMS, reported that the number of lambs over 45kg has increased on last year, meaning more lamb meat on the market. However, slaughter data from October 2014 showed 2.5% fewer lambs were killed compared to last year, and 1.5% less than in England and Wales. “This change in relative volumes is reflected in the price paid for lambs in Scotland, which has been running slightly ahead of prices in England and Wales for the past two weeks, a scenario that has not existed since the beginning of August this year,” observed Ashworth. Prices could also benefit from the return of the Chinese market buying lamb skins: “Earlier in the year, actions by the Chinese government to improve water quality closed many Chinese sheep skin processors and resulted in a global crash in sheepskin prices,” he explained. “Some of these processors have now taken the

necessary remedial action and re-opened. Consequently they are slowly returning to the marketplace. However, the retail demand for sheepskin and leather products remains subdued.” Ashworth also reported that, in recent weeks, cull ewes have been trading at prices almost 20% higher than last year: “One driver for this will have been the significant decline in ewe slaughterings. Between June and the end of October, ewe slaughterings across the UK have been almost 12% lower than the same period last year, a decline of more than 100,000 head. “A higher ewe population recorded in the June census would suggest that, at the usual replacement rates needed to maintain flock size, there would be a small growth in ewe slaughterings. “The fact that ewe slaughterings are lower than last year may then prove to be an indicator of further growth in breeding sheep numbers this autumn.”

Ewe research could boost UK sheep trade

Research into the genetics of ewe longevity could give the UK sheep industry a £4.35 million boost, according to Eblex. The one-year research, funded by the English beef and sheep levy body, will be carried out through Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC). Eblex explained: “Replacing ewes within the flock is expensive, whether they are bought in or home-bred. The average replacement rate within the UK flock is 20-25% per year and is affected by many factors, including culling policies on farm and death rates. Finding genetic solutions to increase the productive lifespan of ewes on farm and reduce the number of replacements required will be financially beneficial to commercial farmers, with the economic value of improving flock longevity estimated to be £1-£1.50 per ewe per annum.” Dr Joanne Conington, SRUC livestock geneticist, said: “Improving productive lifespan in our sheep flock increases maternal efficiency and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, as fewer replacement ewe lambs are required. “By identifying and avoiding the use of under-performing families and strains of sheep, and by highlighting good ‘maternal’ rams for breeding, farmers can better select their breeding stock with the additional breeding tools that it is hoped this project will deliver.”

Very Positive Interest for ‘Blues’ at Welshpool Topping at 4,200gns twice

There was very positive interest for both bulls and females, at the inaugural sale of British Blue pedigree cattle, at Welshpool Mart on Saturday 22nd November. The sale was held jointly, between Harrison & Hetherington, Carlisle and Welsh Livestock Sales. An impressive parade of animals forward took place instead of a show. Two bulls topped the market at 4,200gns, the first being Dinmore Istanbull, from Paul Dawes, Dinmore Manor Estate, Hereford. A son of

Paulern Declan ET and out of Paulern Fancy, Istanbull being at the very top of the breed for 400-day growth and carcase profitability index and found a new home DH Tilsley, Minsterley, Shropshire. The second, coming from the Wyn Jones stable at Oswestry, being Tanat Intrepid ET. Again, a bull in the top 95% of the breed for 400day weight and the top 25% for carcase profitability index. A son of Drift Domino and out of Greystone Bertha, finding a home with E Evans, Talybont, Dyfed. Cierian Jones from Lampeter, selling Rhiwonnen Blues IOU ET for 3,000gns again to DH Tilsley, Minsterley, Shropshire. A son of Imperial De L’Ecluse and out of Bringlee Desiree ET, a grandson of the infamous Bringlee Sandy. Tanat Iceman, again from Wyn Jones, making 2,900gns finding a

new home with DW Lewis & Son, Llandrindod Wells. A son of Bringlee Ecstasy out of Whiterock Diamond being in the top 20% of the breed for scrotal size and intramuscular fat. A recipient with Cromwell Jonty ET at foot, from Adam Neachell, Aldridge, Staffordshire, making 2,400 gns. Jonty being a daughter of Solway View Firecracker out of Berenice De Bierwa, a Belgian heifer. Auctioneer, David Thomlinson commented, “There was keen interest in all lots forward, with purchasers prepared to pay for good quality animals.” Averages: 4 Bulls £3,754 1 Recipient with Calf at Foot £2,520 There being a 57% clearance for bulls forward

Texels drive genetic innovation in UK sheep industry Tackling one of the UK sheep industry’s most underestimated health problems, mastitis, will be easier in future thanks to pioneering new research being undertaken by the British Texel sheep Society (BTSS) in collaboration with SRUC.

54

Thanks to a £450,000 project award from the Technology Strategy Board, BTSS will be using the very latest genomic technology to investigate the role of genetics in controlling the disease.

Report claims demand must dictate Welsh Beef supply

Co-operation across the supply chain and better knowledge of consumer demand would help secure a positive future for Welsh Beef, a report into the industry has found. The independent report into the Welsh Beef industry was commissioned by Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC) – Meat Promotion Wales earlier this year when a fall in market prices led to very low profit margins. The report, produced by SAC Consulting, found that better supply chain cooperation and understanding of consumer needs can better organise the beef industry. The report concluded demand for beef products must dictate supply. Wales’ Deputy Minister for Farming and Food Rebecca Evans said the government would encourage the provision of beef: “There is a great deal that we should

be proud about in respect of the operation of the beef sector in Wales. In 2013, nearly £70 millionworth of Welsh Beef was exported across the globe, and I am keen to work with HCC to develop further market interest from around the world to ensure this figure increases. “Earlier this month I announced HCC had been successful in its application to the European Commission for a three-year funding programme worth more than £3m, to promote Welsh Lamb and Beef in countries across Europe. “I also want to see Welsh Beef doing increasingly well in our domestic market. I will continue to work with partners in government and with businesses across the supply chain to encourage greater provision of Welsh Beef in our shops and on our tables.” Moving forward, the government reported it would adopt an approach

that is a hybrid of allowing free market to take its course and full regulation. “At the heart of the industry would be a productive national suckler herd,” stated the report. “Producing beef costeffectively, with high eating quality and a great back story, means that PGI Welsh Beef has more impact in markets beyond Wales.” HCC chief executive Gwyn Howells said: “I welcome the conclusions of this independent report, which provides the industry with a valuable guide to what actions are needed to support a long-term and viable future for the beef sector in Wales. “HCC is keen to play its part in helping to coordinate and shape the future direction of the Welsh Beef sector, in partnership with the Welsh government and in full consultation and with the cooperation of farmers, auctioneers, processors and retailers.”

A "True CLAAS" The new ATOS follows the modern, yet functional, CLAAS design and so fits seamlessly into the large CLAAS tractor family. With its compact dimensions, the ATOS is extremely manoeuvrable and ideal for all kinds of farm work. Large range of power options with four and three-cylinder engines The ATOS is powered by a Stage IIIb/Tier 4i-compliant engine. The 300 series uses a 4 cylinder engine that has a 3.8 l displacement, whilst the 200 Series has a 3 cylinder engine, with a 2.9 l displacement. The engines feature a common rail injection system, turbocharger and charge air cooler. Exhaust after treatment is carried out by a diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC). Cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system ensures maximum efficiency. The catalytic converter is integrated under the bonnet leaving clear all-round visibility. High torque values of up to 436 Nm mean that the ATOS is extremely responsive to drive. The fuel tank holds up to 145 l and the standard equipment also includes an engine speed memory function. Wide range of transmission options With three different variants, CLAAS offers a transmission to suit every customer. The range includes a standard manual transmission for basic applications, the TWINSHIFT transmission with two powershift speeds or the TRISHIFT transmission with three powershift speeds. All transmission variants are available with either a mechanical reverser or the REVERSHIFT clutchless variant. Three power take-off options are

also available for the ATOS with the following speeds: • 540 and 540 ECO • 540/540 ECO, 1000 and 1000 ECO. An automatic power take-off system and a separate groundspeed power take-off for powering trailers are also available optionally.

hydraulic FLEXPILOT control system. The rear linkage can also be controlled mechanically or electronically as an option. The ATOS 300 has a maximum lift capacity of 4.8 t at the rear, while the ATOS 200 can lift up to 3.6 t.

New: SMART STOP A special feature of the ATOS is the new SMART STOP function for the transmission when equipped with REVERSHIFT. When activated, using a button on the dashboard, the system automatically declutches when the brake pedal is depressed. Stopping and starting is carried out solely using the brake pedal. This makes SMART STOP ideal for repetitive actions around the yard, especially when using a front loader, and equally in the field, for instance when round baling. The SMART STOP function shuts off automatically at higher speeds. The ATOS can be equipped exfactory with a fully integrated 1.9t capacity front linkage. The front linkage console can be operated either with the mechanical PROPILOT control system or the

option provides an increased hydraulic output of 60 l/min at a reduced engine speed of 1600 rpm – thus lowering fuel consumption. A total of four spool valves are available. The ATOS is available in both twoand four-wheel drive variants across all models. The maximum tyre size for the ATOS 300 is 38", and for the ATOS 200 the maximum size is 34". The new ATOS is equipped with a comfortable four-pillar cab, which provides excellent all-round visibility of the working area. Furthermore, all of the functions are clearly arranged within the cab. The doors open over a wide range, making it easy to enter and exit the cab. Thanks to the glass roof hatch, the driver always has a good view over the front loader and ensuring they can work safely and accurately at all times.

The standard hydraulic pump has an output of 55 l/min. The ECO

John Deere scores hat-trick at 2015 SIMA show Mannheim, 27 November 2014 Three innovative John Deere concepts will receive gold and silver innovation awards plus a special mention at the 2015 SIMA show in Paris (February 2226). “This achievement recognises John Deere’s commitment to innovation and advanced technology and is the result of excellent teamwork across the entire business,” says Chris Wigger, John Deere’s Region 2 Vice President, Sales & Marketing.

e ctEmerg ard: Exa w A ld o G

J o h n Deere’s ExactEmerge high performance planter concept provides new levels of accuracy at planting speeds of up to 10mph (16kph) and beyond. This innovative technology delivers seed to the bottom of the furrow in a rearward trajectory that truly matches the ground speed of the planter at any desired seed population. This delivers precise seed placement in the furrow with no bounce and no roll, whether planting maize or soya beans at high seeding rates. A cartridge of brush bristles gently cradles the seed on all sides, with full 96

control, to deliver each seed to the bottom of the furrow, even in rough planting conditions. ExactEmerge row units handle the vast majority of seed shapes and sizes, achieving 99 per cent seed singulation. Featuring a road transport width of only 3m, John Deere’s eight-row high performance planter concept offers a granular fertiliser option and has been designed to work in both conventional tillage and no-till conditions. Mounted on a tractor, this unique electric-drive planter can be powered by an external generator attached to the tractor pto (or alternatively by a John Deere 6RE tractor), and is fully integrated into John Deere’s FarmSight range of precision farming solutions. Silver Award: AutoConnect John Deere has also developed the AutoConnect system, which is designed to fully connect a tractor to an implement without the operator needing to leave the tractor seat. By helping to save time when implements need to be changed, this new system provides a significant increase in productivity as well as improved operator safety. AutoConnect automatically links the tractor and the implement by establishing full functionality of the drawbar, PTO, SCVs, electrics, ISOBUS and air brakes. Activated on the tractor’s GreenStar cab display, the software modules AutoBackup, AutoConnect and AutoSetup enable a completely safe and quick connection to be made between the tractor and the implement.

Special Mention: Battery Boost Enabling the use of high voltage electricity on both vehicles and implements, John Deere’s Battery Boost is the industry’s first tractor able to plug into the grid, and represents a major milestone on agriculture’s journey towards enhanced electro mobility. The innovative Battery Boost tractor concept utilises high performance batteries to preserve energy taken from a farm’s solar, biogas or wind energy plants, for use as a power source on demand. Connected to a modified John Deere 6RE tractor, Battery Boost can provide up to 107kW of additional power and enables the tractor to extend its power range, independent of the operating mode. Furthermore, the system’s AEF (Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation) standardised socket unlocks new opportunities for agricultural e-mobility, manually or automatically controlled hybrid electric applications and bidirectional (DC) battery charging, which is additionally supported through CCS (Combined Charging System) socket integration. Key benefits of the easy to use, ‘plug-and-play’ Battery Boost system include a significant reduction in fuel costs due to the flexible use of sustainable energy produced on the farm, and the ability to use a lower rated tractor for applications where occasionally much higher horsepower would be required.

Suzuki courtesy ATV scheme keeps farmers on the move

Suzuki GB is pleased to be continuing its courtesy ATV scheme throughout its extensive Dealer Network. The pioneering initiative from Suzuki offers customers the use of a new Suzuki ATV when any utility ATV – regardless of the make or model – is taken to an authorised Suzuki Dealer for service or repair work. The courtesy ATV scheme was introduced to help minimise down time and to keep businesses operating smoothly while their ATV is serviced. It has already proved popular among businesses as George Cheeseman, Sales and

92

Marketing Manager – Suzuki ATV & Marine Division, explains, "The courtesy ATV initiative is designed with our customers in mind and demonstrates that we understand the nature of their businesses – particularly during this busy season. Knowing that the scheme is minimising disruption to businesses up and down the country is really encouraging, so we have decided to keep the scheme running through our Dealer Network for the foreseeable future.” From the introductory model, the Ozark 250, right up to the flagship KingQuad 750, Suzuki

utility ATVs stand by farmers in the remotest of locations and the harshest of environments – and are always relied upon to be ready to take on a day’s work. George concludes, “Knowing that farmers put as much time and passion into their businesses as Suzuki does into developing its product line-up means that we are fully committed to keeping businesses running as smoothly as the ATVs themselves.” To find out more information please visit www.suzuki-atv.co.uk. Orchard spraying technology comes to the broiler house

Mist sprayers originally designed for use in orchards and vineyards, where a 360-degree spread of mist is needed to apply pesticides to fruit and vines, can also significantly improve the speed and effectiveness of poultry shed disinfection routines, reports Karen Brewer. “Mist sprayers offer a fast, safe and effective alternative to more labour intensive methods of disinfecting broiler sheds,” explains Duncan McLeish, UK Sales Manager for Kuhn Farm Machinery. “What might take two or three people a whole day to do with knapsacks can easily be accomplished within a few hours with a suitable tank mister. This makes the use of a tractorpowered sprayer perfectly suited to sites with multiple sheds or where the availability of reliable labour is at a premium. “Misters are both more efficient

and more consistent,” adds Mr McLeish. “Their 360-degree spray pattern ensures all surfaces are thoroughly disinfected, thereby reducing the risk of disease and infection being spread by crosscontamination from one batch of birds to the next.” Kuhn’s GEO and GEO M range includes mounted machines equipped with polyethylene tanks of 300, 400 or 600 litres, and trailed models with a tank capacity of 1,000, 1,500 or 2,000. Turbine diameters range from 300, 400 or 600mm on mounted models and 750, 850 or 900mm on trailed models. All using proven crop sprayer technology and are fitted as standard with fresh-water rinsing and hand-wash tanks to comply with all applicable safety standards. Spraying function on the more basic GEO M models is controlled manually with valves mounted on a

single manifold. This manifold can be replaced by an electronic, in-cab controller (standard on the GEO range) for increased operator comfort and enhanced spraying precision. Both ranges have galvanised steel frames for greater resistance to corrosion and chemical attack and are equipped with piston-diaphragm pumps with a flow rate of 51, 71 or 89 litres per minute at operating pressures from 0 to 40 bar. They are available with air guiding vanes to ensure an even mist pattern and single or double vane mounted outlet jets to increase air flow and spray coverage by up to 20%. Kuhn’s smallest 550mm turbineequipped machines can be used with 15hp tractors while the largest 900mm turbine machines require 50hp.

Front-Mounted Shedder for Biomass Harvesting A new front-mounted shredder for harvesting high volume energy crops such as Miscanthus is now available to UK biomas growers. Kuhn’s WS 320 BIO can also be used as a reverse drive shredder and features a hydraulic reel and hood, which enable large volume plants and lodged crops to be shredded easily and efficiently. Designed for use in conjunction with a baler for shredding and harvesting in a single pass the WS 320 BIO has a central rear opening and hydraulically driven worm screw, for windrow formation. The 72 Yshaped shredding knives turn at a relatively low speed, on a 220mm rotor, to deliver a coarse shredding

action and a typical 15cmplus chop length for easier pick-up by the following baler. According to Kuhn’s Duncan McLeish: “The WS 320 BIO has been designed to offer maximum reliability and uses thick steel plates and two sturdy support beams to

create a robust machine with a 3.23 metre working width.” Cutting height can be adjusted from 4 to 15cm and the recommended tractor power requirement is 150-300hp

Kuhn Farm Machinery has announced the launch of a new shredder to the UK fruit growing market. Designed specifically to operate between rows of fruit trees, the TRP 175 PRO is capable of shredding high volumes of leaf residue and thick, woody branches at high speed. It can also be used for light path clearing and verge shredding, making it a truly versatile piece of landscape maintenance equipment. The TRP 175 PRO has a 175cm working width and features a large volume casing for maximum output. It is fitted with a hydraulically driven, adjustable speed pick-up rotor, and is fitted with two high strength Domex steel rear grids with 60mm outlet holes for very fine shredding: the upper grid is hinge-mounted for easy access to the rotor. The new shredder is fitted with a 457mm diameter flail rotor, equipped with 1.65kg heavy hammer knives which are mounted onto toothed knife holders with robust 25mm pins. Capable of operating at up to 3,100 revolutions per minute, the knives and toothed holders, which are arranged in a helical pattern, hold debris within the body of the flail until all material has been broken down into fine fragments.

The TRP 175 PRO uses a central gearbox and a reversible head allowing the machine to be front or rear mounted. It can also be used with reverse drivestation tractors. As standard, the front hood is fixed, with a hydraulically adjustable roller available as an option – this enables the machine to be fine tuned according to the volume of debris to be shredded. “The TRP 175 PRO is the ideal machine for fruit farmers looking to shred high volumes of branch and leaf residue,” Jean-Sebastien explains Vecten of Kuhn Farm Machinery. “It is capable of shredding large amounts of woody material into a very fine pulp and is robust enough to cope most the with challenging conditions. A strong frame, tough gearbox and thick chamber lining make the new machine capable of withstanding heavy stone impacts and give the TRP a long working life.”

Customer satisfaction inspires New Holland Dealer Aftersales Convention The impressive Customer Centre at New Holland’s flagship tractor plant in Basildon played host to the brand’s dealers from across the UK and Republic of Ireland for the 2014 Dealer Aftersales Convention. More than 70 key staff arrived for the event on November 4th and 5th where the New Holland commercial team showcased the best practice methods alongside new and exciting aftersales initiatives designed to bring the very best support to the customer. New Holland Aftersales Commercial Manager James Carroll said: “As is the case in all areas of our business, we at New Holland are constantly striving to provide a ‘best in class’ experience to our customers, and our aftersales commitment is no exception. That’s exactly what the 2014 Dealer Aftersales Convention was all about. “The market is very competitive and we recognise the customers’ requirement for a professional, trusted and responsive aftersales service. We understand that this is a key consideration in the buying choice of potential customers and, like them, maximising machine productivity and efficiency by minimising downtime is of the highest importance to us. “The dealer staff have gone back to their customers with updated knowledge, fresh expertise, and an unrivalled hunger to keep the New Holland brand at the forefront of people’s minds. 2015 is going to be a big year – watch this space.” A series of workshop sessions unveiled the new aftersales initiatives set to hit the market over the coming weeks and months. This included updated technical support processes and growth of the New Holland Technician Training Certification Program, which runs alongside the industry-recognised Landbased

92

Technician Accreditation scheme (LTA), and New Holland’s technician apprenticeship scheme. The sessions also focussed on the tools available to adapt the various aftersales services to each customer’s unique requirements and how to bring the range of offerings to the market. There was also insight into the work that has been done to bring customers closer than ever to the New Holland brand in order to continue to strengthen the support that the dealer network is able to provide. One of the attendees was Edmund Lindley, Dealer Principal of Oakes Bros in the south of England. He said: “The content was very pertinent and very good. It gave us all the feeling that there was a real desire to strengthen the professionalism of aftersales care. “It felt like we’re going in the same direction and there is a joined-up approach from selling the product right through to the aftersales process. After all, if you get it right at the first sale, you make it easier for the next.” Dan Haynes, Group Aftersales Manager at Lloyd Ltd, which serves customers across the north of England and the Scottish Borders, added: “As New Holland dealers, Lloyd Ltd understand that our customers are constantly striving for improved efficiency and therefore expect not only industryleading machines, but also industry-leading aftersales support from their local dealer. “By our Service teams attending the New Holland Aftersales Conference it allows us to be fully conversant with the New Holland aftersales products, enabling us to ensure that we select aftersales packages that are tailored to our individual customers’ requirements and allows us to assist in the development of new products as they become relevant in the market place.”

FARMERS UK NEWS & ADVERTORIAL

New Range of Entry Level Disc Mowers from KUHN

Kuhn Farm Machinery has updated its entry-level range of disc mowers with the arrival of four new versions of its basic GMD model. Available in working widths from 1.6 to 2.8 metres, the four model range uses Kuhn’s 100 Series cutter bar and Protectadrive system to deliver high quality and reliable grass cutting. The GMD range is designed for small or medium-sized farms where a simple and reliable machine is required. The GMD 16, 20, 24 and 28 machines feature working widths of 1.60m, 2.00m, 2.40m and 2.80m respectively and are now fitted with Kuhn’s 100 Series cutter bar which features the company’s Protectadrive safety system. “The Series 100 cutter bar is a standard feature on Kuhn’s higher

specification mowers, and is now available on the GMD range,” explains Duncan McLeish, UK Sales Manager for Kuhn Farm Machinery. “It gives an exceptionally clean cut which not only preserves the nutritional value of the cut grass, but also promotes faster sward regrowth.” The Series 100 cutter bar is equipped with large diameter gearwheels with reinforced teeth for improved wear and impact resistance and uses disc pinion shaft bearings which are symmetrical in relation to the radial forces endured by the disc. These bearings are fitted in an anti-distortion housing to enable them to withstand the heaviest loads and to optimize the load balance incurred by each disc. “The cutter bar is specifically designed to have a long service life

and to be easily serviced,” Mr McLeish adds. “It is protected by Kuhn’s anti-impact Protectadrive system which protects the gear train should an obstacle be struck. Each disc shaft features a shear groove which is designed to fail should the mowing bar come into contact with a foreign object. By making the sheared shaft easy to replace, any downtime is kept to a minimum, and in fact, the mower should be operational again in less than 15 minutes.” For increased machine protection, the new GMD range also uses a swath wheel to prevent the cutter bar from coming into contact with the ground, while a safety breakback system allows the mower to shift rearwards should an obstacle be struck.
