English farmers could grow commercial GM crops for first time Genetically modified crops could be grown commercially by English farmers for the first time following a landmark ruling in Europe next week. On Tuesday the European Parliament is expected to approve a deal which will let countries decide for themselves whether they want to plant GM crops. The new legislation, which will be in place by Spring, could mean that commercial GM crops including maize and oil seed rape are grown in Britain. The crops, which have been genetically modified to produce higher yields and withstand higher concentrations of weedkiller, would be sold for animal feed or to produce energy. It raises the prospect that genetically modified fruit and vegetables could ultimately be grown for sale in Britain's supermarkets.Lord de Mauley, the environment minister, told MPs that genetically modified produce are a "key agricultural technology for the 21st century". He told the science and technology select committee that it will help "undo the logjam" in approvals for genetically modified crops at European Union level.

4

However, he said he was "disappointed" that the legislation will allow other European nations to make decisions to ban GM crops which are "not based on scientific evidence". It is feared that could lead the industry simply to write off the whole of Europe. He said: "GM offers the potential to increase production and maintain it when it might otherwise be reduced with crops that resist disease or pest damage, or which can thrive in difficult climatic conditions. "As GM production continues to expand outside Europe and the range of beneficial GM traits is increased it should become increasingly difficult for the EU to set its face against widespread acceptance of the technology. We will continue to engage with them.

"Regardless of the EU situation, we have a world-class plant science base which could provide commercial opportunities for the development of new GM crops. "It will be a key agricultural technology for the 21st century, and it is important that we maintain UK research in that area." At present, the European Union has banned the use of a large number of genetically modified crops because of opposition across Europe. The new legislation will mean member states will be able to decide at a national level whether to plant GM crops. Lord de Mauley said that that are no genetically modified crops awaiting for approval which are suitable for growing in England. Experts said that genetically modified maize and oilseed rape

those member states or regions that are open to GM cultivation. We will be pressing for the outstanding applications for EU approval to be authorised as soon as possible."

Genetically modified fruit and vegetables are not currently available for sale in British supermarkets. However, meat from livestock which has been fed using genetically modified crops is sold.

Peter Melchett, policy director at the Soil Association, said: "I hope that England will learn from the lessons of Scotland and Wales and think about what's in the interests of the farming industry rather than the chemical companies.

Supermarkets have previously said that they are only prepared to change their policy and sell genetically modified food if there is demand from customers. Genetically modified crops are being trialled in Rothamstead, Hertfordshire and Norwich in Norfolk, but they are not be sold commercially. Wales and Scotland are opposed to the use genetically modified crops and will not be growing anyway. Lord de Mauley said: "It could provide an easier route to market for GM crops that pass the EU safety assessment process, albeit the market will be limited to

"The biggest risk is that England gets the reputation of being a GM country. It wouldn't be a surprise. It could damage exports from England and if you get a reputation for being an unreliable supplier people look elsewhere. " Meurig Raymond’s, President of the National Farmers Union, said: "If the European Parliament adopts the text currently tabled, it is supporting unscientific, emotional and politicised arguments and justifications for banning an agricultural technology within a single

market. “GM could provide UK farmers with the potential for expanding markets and meeting the challenge of feeding an ever growing population in a sustainable way. Restricting ourselves from doing this is an outdated and backward step.” Genetic modification involves taking existing plant strains and genetically engineering them with DNA from other species to produce useful traits, such as higher yields or resistance to pesticides. But there has been vociferous public opposition to so-called “franken-foods” in the past. Critics have raised fears of possible environmental damage if GM strains spread and have argued that they allow chemical companies to “own” plants as the GM strains are protected by intellectual property law. The prospect of England growing GM crops commercially prompted concern from organic farmers last night.

36 Young Farmers, bracing themselves for a trip of a lifetime 36 Young Farmers across England and Wales are bracing themselves for the trip of a lifetime in 2015 after being selected for next year's YFC Travel Programme, and there is still a chance to get involved. The successful NFYFC members attended a YFC Travel Selection Day, sponsored by NFU Mutual, in Coventry on Saturday 6th December. Each of them were put through their paces with a variety of activities and interviews to determine why they were suitable candidates to represent NFYFC around the world. Angharad Thomas of Shropshire FYFC will be venturing all the way to Australia next year, while Alice Morley of Derbyshire FYFC and Jesslyn Thay of Oxfordshire FYFC will travel to the other side of the pond and experience agricultural life in America - the newest trip in the YFC Travel Programme. Michelle Evans, of Rushbury & Cardington YFC in Shropshire, expressed her joy at being selected to go to a homestay trip to Germany in June. Michelle (photo - bottom row, far right), who is studying at Harper Adams University, said: "I was quite nervous about going to the interview day as I wasn't sure what to expect. Although it was a very long day, the interview was fine and the panel of judges were really interested in finding out more about me and why I would be a good person to represent YFC overseas. I'm so excited to be going to

8

Germany next summer. After seeing the presentations at the selection day I know that I'm going to have no problem getting along with the members of the German Landjugend!" As well as homestays, the YFC Travel programme also offers a range of working scholarships and team travel opportunities, with trips ranging from one week to three months. NFYFC has been providing these opportunities for more than 60 years. The programme is supported by the Young Farmers’ Ambassadors, a group of former YFC travellers who raise money to provide scholarships for future travellers, as well as the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust, C Alma Baker Trust and the Australian Bicentennial Trust. Each year YFC Travel continues to develop, adding new and exciting opportunities for YFC members. A full list of successful applicants can be found on the NFYFC website.

Meanwhile, there are still two places available for next year's volunteering trip to India as well as the Tall Ships Sailing Trip. A YFC Travel Selection Day for the Tall Ships Trip will be held at YFC Centre in Stoneleigh on Sunday 1st February. For full details on the trip and how to apply, please visit http://www.nfyfc.org.uk/TravelwithY FC/yfctravel. Head over to the NFYFC Facebook page for all of the photos from the event.

Yara Curling Champions go for ‘three in a row’ The temperature may have a certain chill, but the competition couldn’t be hotter or more exciting, than that promised by 2015’s Yara Farmers Curling Championship, now in its 32nd year. Taking place from Monday 26th to Friday 30th January at the Dewars centre in Perth this keenly awaited fixture will see 76 teams, made up of some of Europe’s top curlers, compete over five days of intense curling competition. Not only will last year’s champions - James Stark, Alastair Hodge, Andy Reed and John Cannon from Duns be attempting a ‘three in row’ win, the competition will be the last to be organised by Alan Wood (‘Woodie’), YARA Area Manager and Championship organiser who plans to retire next summer.

Food and farming key to Britain's economic future

Britain has the land, technology and entrepreneurial flair to lead the world in food and farming, Elizabeth Truss said today. Speaking at the Oxford Farming Conference, the Environment Secretary said the £100 billion industry was at the core of the government’s long-term economic plan and detailed the actions being taken to ensure a flourishing future for British food and farming. This includes promoting British exports, cutting red tape and better protecting our country from animal and plant disease to make a real, practical difference to farmers’ working lives. Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said: Farming is a high-tech powerhouse at the heart of our longterm economic plan, vital to our

country’s future security. We have the entrepreneurs and go-ahead farmers to ensure this, taking pride in our heritage to forge a future based on innovation, technology and the quality of our great British food. Over recent months we have seen fresh evidence of why we are right to be both ambitious and optimistic for the industry this year and in the future. Sales of English and Welsh wine are on course to break the £100 million barrier this year. Beer exports are also breaking records, with more than a billion pints of beer sold abroad for the first time. No ambition is too high for British food and farming. Since 2010, the government has signed deals to open 600 food markets abroad, while British food and drink exports have gone up 7%

since 2010, reaching £19 billion. The Bonfield Report launched by the Prime Minister and Environment Secretary has made it easier for public sector schools, hospitals and canteens to buy high-quality local food, helping British producers win more of a £400 million market. From April, it will be easier for shoppers to know the origin of their food, when packaged meat will have to carry a label showing the country where it was reared and slaughtered. The government has also maintained Britain’s world-class disease scientific capability by protecting the number of vets and expanding its investigatory capacity. This includes research to identify what genes make the best beef cattle, which is expected to contribute to £150 million a year in improved farm profits.

£5m Dairy Fund package designed to enable English producers to strengthen their businesses through co-operation and ultimately secure their long term future in the sector. The Women in Dairy groups’ wide ranging objectives so far include to help achieve a better understanding of finance and the concept of dairy farm business benchmarking, improve technical knowledge, get to grips with succession planning and to raise the overall profile of dairy. “Women have an integral part to play on their own family dairy units, from involvement in outdoor day to day operations to managing farm offices, whilst others have responsible roles in the supply sector.

Each has a massive role to play which is frequently underestimated and working in isolation,” says RABDF Foundation for Collaboration project co-ordinator, Lucy Mellor. “This group is designed to bring together women who have one thing in common – dairy. Its key role is sharing of information and ideas, as well as brainstorming in a relaxing friendly environment.” Next meeting: Cheshire and surrounding areas group, 17 December, Stapeley, Nantwich. Highly virulent Asian-American pig disease has spread to Europe Highly virulent Asian-American Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea virus has spread to Europe. The disease is extremely infectious — a thimbleful of manure from an infected pig unit is sufficient to infect the entire British pig population. It is impossible to guarantee Asian-American PEDv will not arrive in Britain on a traveller's shoes or clothes, or on the wheels of a lorry, says the National Pig Association. Therefore all pig-keepers must consider themselves personally responsible for ensuring it does not get onto their own farm. Producers should pay special attention to vehicle biosecurity. In particular no pig lorry should be allowed onto any pig farm unless it has previously been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, says NPA. The highly-virulent strain of PEDv is not in the European Union yet but it is in the Ukraine, which borders the European Union countries of Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. It was discovered in mid-Ukraine by internationally-known British vet Dr John Carr, who has now had the strain sequenced in Britain to confirm his suspicion that it is the virulent Asian-American strain, and not the European strain. Dr Carr cites a well-run commercial 5,000-sow unit in Ukraine where 30,000 piglets died over a matter of weeks, equivalent to the loss of six weaned pigs per sow per year. He

warns that with such high mortality, it is essential to be concerned for the mental health of all stockpeople when a unit breaks down with AsianAmerican PEDv. His worry now is that the highlyinfectious disease could easily spread to the European Union. He stresses it is essential that no live pigs are imported into the United Kingdom from countries with PEDv and he warns that all pig producers should introduce impeccable transport biosecurity routines. The European Food Safety Authority has confirmed the disease has no zoonotic capacity and is therefore harmless to humans. But in the United States it has wiped out over a tenth of the pig population in the past two years, causing up to 100 percent mortality in piglets on infected pig farms.

quickly and no movements on or off the infected unit are allowed by the farmer concerned. Working on the Canadian model of early identification and total industry cooperation, the English Pig Health and Welfare Council has been formulating a contingency plan since April and this is due to be rolled out soon. Meanwhile the statutory pig levy paid by English pig-keepers is funding free testing of diarrhoea samples at government animal health laboratories, to help ensure the disease is picked up promptly if it arrives on a British pig farm.

However the Canadian pig industry has demonstrated it is possible to control the spread of PEDv if the disease is identified

New CEO appointed (AHDB) Jane King has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). Ms King, a former Editor and Editorial Director of the Farmers Weekly Group, will take up her position at the Stoneleigh-based levy board on 1 February, replacing Tom Taylor who left at the end of November 2014. During her time at Farmers Weekly, Jane oversaw a complete repositioning of the title, revitalising its products, developing new services and overseeing organisational change. As a senior executive at Reed Business Information (RBI) for over 30 years, Jane also has significant experience providing information and services to a range of industries as diverse as retail, health, social

care, employment law and hospitality. AHDB Chairman, Sir Peter Kendall, said: “Jane has enormous knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for our industry and the Board and I are delighted to welcome her to AHDB. “Her communication skills and experience of both repositioning and leading a well-known agricultural service brand through a period of change means she will be able to lead AHDB through an important period as it works towards becoming a centre of excellence for the UK industry.”

“The AHDB is an organisation with phenomenal talent and resources supporting farmers, growers and the wider supply chain. I'm really looking forward to driving AHDB forward with the team and the wider industry.” Mick Sloyan, a senior director at AHDB, is currently Acting Chief Executive at AHDB until Ms King takes up her post.

Ms King said: “I am hugely excited and feel extremely privileged to be leading the AHDB through the next stage of its development. UK agriculture is at a turning point and I believe it has enormous potential.

Livestock Event 2015 to host four national beef shows Four beef breeds will be staging major national fixtures at Livestock Event, the UK’s largest event within the sector, to be held at The NEC, Birmingham on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 July. British Blue and Charolais societies have each confirmed they will be holding their national shows, Aberdeen Angus will be staging its junior national show and the South Devon Herd Book Society will be launching its inaugural performance championship. A total of 210 stall places will be available in the Livestock Hall. In addition, the British Charolais Cattle Society will be staging it Young Breeders’ Stock Judging Competition. Returning for the third year, British Charolais Cattle Society’s David Benson commented: “The NEC offers a first class facility in a prime location and the support to exhibitors from the stewards is second to none. 18

This event is well supported by farmers. In fact at last year’s event there were more farmers around the judging ring and came to talk to breeders in the lines afterwards than any of the summer shows.” Livestock Event director, Matt Knight said: “We are delighted to see the return of three breed societies who have each committed to holding their showcase fixtures at Livestock Event whilst we welcome for the first time the South Devon Herd Book Society. “We have taken into account the responses to the 2014 Livestock Event’s visitor survey in which one third of the respondees indicated they would like to see more livestock by expanding the beef section with one new breed as well as consolidating our existing exhibiting societies who continue to provide very positive feedback. The Livestock Hall which already forms the hub of the event, will provide an opportunity for each show to continue to raise its breed profile and build success.”

FARMERS UK NEWS AND DVERTORIAL

Keep looking hard to reduce those Feed Costs more, it can be done Over the last 3 months we have seen spot wheat prices drop to just under £100 in places, and then rally to around £120 now for spot movement for specific homes. Hipro Soya has been on offer as low as mid £270’s for May to October 2015, but spot prices are still trading around £335-340. Very good opportunities have been available at times for the likes of Wheat Distillers, Rapemeal, Maize Meal, Wheatfeed and moist feeds. This is all about being open and flexible, taking advantage of the deals when they are on offer. What to look for now with Proteins? • It feels that if the right deal comes along, there is plenty of business still to be done for this up and coming winter. • In the last article, we highlighted the size of the North American Soyabean crop, this feels like it will be bigger again. In the last 3 months we have seen the projected crop size go from 103.42mmt to 106.87mmt at the last USDA report – If anything reports suggest it will be a little higher than this (remember the 2013 crop was 89.51mmt which was viewed as good). • The spot Soya market, as already highlighted, is relatively expensive and tight in supply, so cover up to the New Year if not already and watch for opportunities in December to book forward business (May 15 onwards). We believe that the Soya price for May/Oct 15 and beyond will fall back towards the £270’s (depending on location and load size), and with a bit of lady luck better than that. This

year’s huge crops are too big not to present us with really good buying opportunities towards December. • If you have not covered spot Soya requirements, then at least look at other protein options. Rapemeal (Protected), Syrups and Moist Feeds are all offering potential to take some protein at very good value, which when balanced with your forages should give an opportunity to save costs. However, one product that must be considered, being high in energy and protein is the distillers grains coming from the UK ethanol plants – they have moved to a level that must be at least investigated, giving the potential to reduce costs now and throughout the winter. Cereals Given another very good year for world production of cereals, Maize and Wheat in particular, forward cover needs to be thought through now for any energy related products. The market continues to move in cycles, we are seeing that now with milk prices as you are all too well aware. It will happen again with all feed prices. The trick is covering at a time when the market feels it has run its course at the low end, and putting sensible cover down. • The current situation provides very good potential to look for opportunities to put cover in place through to April 2016. However, with this latest rally of around £15/mt on wheat, leave it for a month or two until things settle back. • When buying opportunities arise, chip away adding more cover slowly, up to 50% through to October 15 or even April 16. When you have done a

trade, be happy that you have contracted some of your forward requirements and concentrate on other aspects of running your business. • Cereals, wheat in particular, are around 30% down in price from a year ago, this lower price range will not last forever, underlying world demand is still good for commodities, we have just gone through two years of great supply – it will turn, so covering in the next month or two looks sensible. In summary, in a difficult period for milk production, it is hard to pull away from the hard reality of supply and demand of all commodities. We have had unprecedented supply of feed commodities, building up over the last two years, leading to a situation of much higher stocks of both energies and proteins. However, do not be lulled into a period of inactivity, these lower prices will pull in demand from other sectors such as ethanol production. Therefore, look at your current cover percentages, and if you are comfortable for this winter then fine. But be aware of spot opportunities for products you may not historically use, if you need to buy over the next few months – good buys are out there. Finally, keep an eye on the potential of covering product from May onwards next year. As outlined on both cereals and proteins it feels like we are close to the lower end of the cycle for both feed stocks. We would be surprised if the next two months will not offer some great buying potential for the 18 - 20 months beyond January 2015.

N.P. Davies Agricultural Contractors

NP Davies was established by Nigel Davies in 1981 providing a quality and competitive service to farmers and landowners. Based on the borders of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire we can easily travel to other counties when required. A range of agricultural services are offered including, Forage Harvesting, Baling, Cultivation, Drilling, Manure Slurry Digestate and Compost Spreading, Machinery Hire and Contract and Share Farming. Haylage, Hay, Silage, Straw and Maize are available for sale all through the year. Second hand machinery is also purchased and refurbished during winter months, and maintenance work is carried out for local farmers. This service along with fabrications are growing year on year. Ensuring crops are planted and harvested with precision during the few days contractors are on-farm is 26

vital. The importance of the short period on each farm to ensure good quality forage for livestock has been the driving force for Shropshirebased forage contractor Nigel Davies and his team. “Our aim has always been to complete the job to a very high standard whilst remaining competitive, rather than to be the cheapest operation”. A perfect operation is key to farmer’s profits, because a rushed job will mean forage quality suffers, resulting in a lower palatable feed. Mr Davies runs NP Davies Agricultural Contractors who are National Association Agricultural Contractors members with wife Julie and a dedicated team of full and regular part-time staff. Mrs Davies is largely responsible for keeping the company’s administration up to date as well as doing essential runs for consumables. Son Andrew, having studied Agricultural

Engineering at Harper Adams as well as undertaking contracting work in New Zealand and the US, now works for Agco. Daughter Samantha studied Land Management at Harper Adams, and is now working for Smiths Gore having recently achieved MRICS. Both still drive for the business. Muck spreading and ground preparations for spring crops start the years’ work load. “From April we drill maize with a precision drill capable of placing micro and bulk fertiliser with the seed. We gained a lot experience sowing sugar beet with a precision planter across the region for 20 years. Maize requires a good level seedbed, the seed depth and seed spacing in the rows are also critical. I started with a small acreage of maize against a much larger acreage of sugar beet which was a huge slice of our annual work, but the closure of the local beet factory in 2007 means maize has

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL become the main crop”. This main focus on forage production means that Mr Davies has been able to make investments into this area to improve the service on offer. “Critical factors are chop length at harvest, dry matter, grain shatter and ensiling technique. I still actively drive with my staff and it is not uncommon to have a farm’s nutritionist, seed supplier or a machinery manufacturer on site looking at the quality of forage going off the field and into the clamp thanks to the good reputation we have gained”. N P Davies use high capacity triple mowers powered by high horse power reverse drive tractors. Grass can be turned by 10 rotor models depending on the dry matter required by the customer. Grass is raked with twin and quad rotor rakes depending on ground conditions and density of crop and by precision chopping, the grass can be compacted more efficiently creating a highly palatable feed. Wholecrop is a starch based, high dry matter and energy feed and can be fed to a range of animals. N P Davies use a direct cut header to forage all wholecrop, this is to ensure no contamination or loss of grain. A wholecrop processor is used with specialist wholecrop rollers which run at fine tolerances to make sure all grain is split. This is key to making a quality feed and cannot be compared to foraging without a crop processor. N P Davies specialises in maize foraging, key areas during the professional service include harvesting at the right dry matter, achieving a correct chop length, cracking the grain and last but not least consolidating the clamp. This is an area that NP Davies strive to

set themselves apart from the competition. Whether a tractor or loading shovel is used, or in some cases both depending on quantity of product going into the clamp the clamp dictates the speed of the forager. N P Davies prides itself on offering every customer the best possible precision chopped forage. By having better quality silage, additional feed and concentrates could be reduced. The silage made in just a few days could feed cows for a usual six month winter or more. For maximum profitability within this time cow intakes need to be improved and this would only be possible with highly palatable feed. The Kernal processor used in the forager for maize and wholecrop was imported especially to achieve a superior grain shatter. A range of different additives can be applied within the forage harvesting process if required.

Many of the Claverley-based business’ customers have increased their acreages in response to improvements in varieties, forage quality and the move to larger, if fewer, dairy herds. Mr Davies also supplies grass and maize direct to dairy and beef farmers in the area. Being involved with the Maize

Growers Association and seed suppliers I’ve followed the technical updates to ensure we are on top of the job. Claas harvesters are used extensively, with Mr Davies researching various technological advances to help improve forage quality. The characteristics of harvested maize for AD are different to that of a forage. Mr Davies has visited many AD plants in the UK and on the continent, I see the AD market being a big player. I can see maize and rye grass being used in arable rotations, growing these break crops looks appealing and is a good alternative. Also moving with the times is the company’s haylage business. Producing haylage for the equine market is rapidly replacing hay says Mr Davies says. Haylage has much lower dust and a higher nutrient value. That removes the need for

owners to soak fodder before feeding and cuts the need for additional hard feeds. About 120 acres is grown annually which is stored and then dispatched in loads varying from 20 bales taken by individual horse owners through to artic loads for large livery and working yards.

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL

We are very keen to develop the haylage market. For the grower it takes out much of the risk in waiting for that window in summer to cut, dry and bale hay. In between the main maize and haylage contracting periods the company undertakes a range of arable and grassland duties. Baling services are centred around two sizes of baler the 3x3 bale measuring 80x90cm at up to 8 foot long and the “quadrant” size bale measuring 120x70cm at up to 8 foot long. The balers can bale straw, haylage, hay, silage and miscanthus. Balers are equipped with moisture meters. N P Davies prides themselves on good quality bales. Also wrapping can be done as a part job or part of the baling operation, from 4 to 8 layers can be supplied and applied by our wrappers depending on the choice of the customer. All bales can also be stacked and transported to the customer requirements. Ploughing is the main primary cultivation carried out by N P Davies, 5 and 6 furrow ploughs are used and these can be set up depending on previous and next crop type. Subsoiling and discing can be

done together or separately, with or without a packer roller depending on the requirements. For germination a double set of discs can be used, for subsoiling eight legs can be used over a 4 metre section, or for a complete tilth 4 to 8 legs can be used, two sets of discs and a packer. For secondary cultivation a range of power harrows can be used, a 6 metre hydraulic folding power harrow does the bulk of the work, with the ability to call on a 3 and 4 metre power harrow also. Manure, slurry and digestate spreading is an area of the business that is growing, as farmers look to focus on their cattle. High specification machines are used to make sure that spreading of manure is accurate. For chicken manure spreader plates can be used to ensure an accurate spread. Compost can also be supplied and spread. Tractor hire is available with operator and fuel with 100-300hp tractors, also manure spreaders are available with or without tractor and operator with the option of spreader plates. A 360 degree excavator is available for hire with or without

operator, the 13 tonne machine is a multi purpose machine which can be used for a range of tasks from ditching to digging and general groundworks. This particular excavator can be supplied with a range of buckets. Road building and amenity services are also areas of the business seeing an expansion, road building has become more popular from farmers looking to improve cattle welfare, or install new tracks for better access or just improving old tracks. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff that include a number of local farmers’ sons who join us year-on-year for busy periods. That is important for customers as the drivers are the face of the company when going in and out of farms during forage harvesting and clamping. The fact we run a fleet of Fendts encourages drivers to continue working for us as they like the reliability and comfort. And from my point of view, Fendts are also economical and have very strong resale values. Mr Davies’ experience and investment in maize grain processing technology will enable customers to benefit. Other added value benefits for the customer include trailers running on low ground pressure tyres and high capacity and efficient machinery. Year-round demand for a quality product produced during a few days of intensive, efficient and accurate work by the NP Davies’ team will once again pay dividend.

It’s time for black-grass control with Atlantis WG

Forecasts for continued mild weather into November should focus growers’ minds on controlling black-grass this autumn, rather than relying on pre-em chemistry to ‘hold’ control over until spring. Bayer CropScience says the successful conclusion of the winter wheat drilling campaign, coupled with good establishment conditions, has favoured emergence of grass weeds such as black-grass and that there’s now a ‘golden opportunity’ to reduce this year’s black-grass populations significantly. “Controlling black-grass has always been difficult,” says herbicides development manager Gordon Anderson-Taylor in the company’s latest Technical Update, “but 2014 trials conducted by independent contractors and distributors showed that autumn is the time to be thinking about post34

emergence herbicide applications. “Weather forecasts into November predict that we’re unlikely to see any significant cold weather for two to three weeks, which means emerged black-grass will continue to grow and tiller. “Hoping to tackle large, well tillered black-grass plants with applications of Atlantis WG (mesosulfuron + iodosulfuron) in spring is tantamount to preparing yourself for a failed weed control programme,” he warns. “If you experienced poor control of blackgrass last season, don’t automatically assume you’ve got resistance to mesosulfuron – it’s more likely that the plant was just too big for the dose within Atlantis WG.” Results from ten UK trials during 2013-2014 showed that there was a 29% fall in efficacy between Atlantis WG applications made at GS11-13

and those made at GS23-25. “This drop-off in control is directly related to the increased size of the plant,” Dr Anderson-Taylor points out. “Since Atlantis WG was launched in 2003, the beginning of November has always been seen as its optimal application timing,” says Phillippa Overson, combinable crops campaign manager. “This year looks set to be a golden opportunity for growers to really get on top of blackgrass populations. “Little rainfall and above average temperatures over the next couple of weeks should provide some good spray windows,” she says, “particularly for those crops where black-grass is already well advanced. “You might still need to deal with cleavers and wild-oats in spring, but there’s good chemistry for those. You won’t get a second chance to deal a blow to black-grass, so take it now.”

Farmers reaping the benefits of the sun Ground Mount verses Roof Mount – The Popularity of the Solar Panel As the Feed In Tariff rolls into its fourth year of operation, the interest in Renewable Energy seems to only be gaining momentum. With Solar PV systems making up 87% of the total number of energy installations in the United Kingdom (OFGEM Dec 2013), it would appear that people are reaping the benefits of the power from the Sun. The South West is the largest producers of Solar Energy, producing 4.36 MW in 2013 alone (OFGEM Dec 2013). Of course, there are obvious reasons why the South West is the most ideal location to install a Solar PV System, or even a solar farm with the most access to sunlight in the UK, however, there is nothing to prevent any business from seizing the rewards of a renewable energy system. Many people are often concerned about whether their land gets enough sunlight to warrant a Solar PV system, however, the panels only require daylight and not sunlight to generate power.

36

A common myth surrounding Solar PV is that the land or roof of a property must face due south. However, current installations show that a 13% annual return is still possible with installations that face East/West. Another discussion which occurs when discussing Solar PV generation is whether a Roof Mounted PV system or Ground Mounted system is better. The truth is that there are benefits of both types of system and one is not necessarily better than the other. A Ground Mounted PV system enables a farm or business to make the use of spare land that cannot be used for other purposes, generating money it would not ordinarily produce. Farmers with small livestock such as sheep or chickens can still let the animals use the field as the height of the system will not interfere their grazing. Ground Mounted PV systems also enable large scale installations to take place which are capable of powering large businesses whilst making money by exporting unused electricity back to the grid. Additionally, there will always be room for expansion with a Ground Mounted system as a business develops or as profit is made. Bowler Energy have installed 2.3MW of Ground Mounted solar panels since the company started in 2011. When this figure

is compared the 3.2MW of Roof Mounted Solar fitted in the same time, it would appear that Roof Mounted is a slightly more popular option. This is likely to be a result of the company initially marketing roof mounted panels to fit on the top of existing chicken sheds on our freerange farms, from there we have developed out business to provide other types of renewable energy system. Another reason for the popularity of the Roof Mounted PV system is that it does not take up any extra land. Therefore businesses based on large scale industrial sites can benefit from a PV system which will still generate enough energy to power but not take up any additional space. The Roof Mounted PV system can often fall within ‘permitted development’ meaning that no planning permission would be required to install a system 50kW or below as long as there is a 1m spacing between the panel and the edge of the roof. Solar PV Systems are consistently going to be the most popular option of Renewable Energy because they are the most accessible. The Roof Mount verses Ground Mount decision will always remain down to the client’s personal preference and location. But one thing many people who have a Solar PV system can be sure of it that the return on investment and the reduction in energy bills is enough to encourage anyone to take the first steps towards a Solar PV system of their own.

Ernest Fenton is an arable and sheep farmer in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He also runs an ice rink for curling and, in March 2012, had a 50kW roof-mounted solar PV system installed by Bowler Energy on a new, purpose built barn. As you can imagine, maintaining an ice rink requires a massive amount of electricity. For Ernest the deciding factors in pursuing a solar installation were the income from the feed-in tariffs and the ability to moderate his electricity costs for the next twenty years. The idea behind the purpose built barn was so that a roof-mounted system could be installed at the optimum angle to gain maximum output – and the barn itself provides a useful storage area. This could not have been gained from a groundmounted array and it helped to make the project more viable. Before awarding the contract to Bowler Energy, Ernest did his research and contacted other solar PV installers, but he says that some of them were not very good at responding to the difficult questions that he asked, whereas Bowler Energy’s Eddie Chadfield was always at the end of the phone with answers to his questions. Ernest knew Bowler Energy were a longestablished company and the quotation was competitive, so it seemed a good choice to go with them. Planning permission was required for the installation which Bowler Energy dealt with as part of the package. The installation itself was very speedy – in fact Ernest recalls the installation team were working against the clock to get the system installed and commissioned before

the tariff reduction came into effect, which they did. All in all, the entire process from initial contact to completed and commissioned PV system took five months. Ernest has been very pleased with his new PV system. It has lowered his reliance on electricity consumption from the grid, which is quite significant considering the amount of electricity required to maintain the ice rink. Ernest used to only open the ice rink during the winter months but since the installation of the PV array he has been able to extend the opening season to include spring and autumn. Previously the cost of keeping the ice cool would have made this financially prohibitive but now that Ernest has less reliance on bought-in electricity, he can afford to use his own electricity produced by his solar panels to move his business forward. “Electricity consumption is heading in the right direction,” says Ernest. “The feed-in tariff income has helped to support the farm, which has been a godsend during these last few months. We would be in a very different position now if it wasn’t for that”. Ernest now has a full twelve months of production data available and can see that only one month out of twelve the panels performed under target – for the other eleven months the panels were either on or above target. Says Ernest “I have a friend on the south coast who has an installation the same size as mine on one of his dairy buildings. We compare output readings and every

month so far mine has beaten his by at least 10% and sometimes as much as 15%!” As part of the package Ernest opted to have a solar logger fitted, which is a device offered by Bowler Energy on all its PV installations to enable the client to monitor the output of their panels. The solar logger even alerts the client if output falls below a certain level. This can be particularly useful in the event of a malfunction which could otherwise go unnoticed until the next quarterly meter reading was due, by which time the financial loss would be considerable. Ernest is also very happy with the back-up support received from Bowler Energy. To illustrate this he talks about a phone call he had from Bowler Energy about twelve months after the PV system was installed. “I received a parcel at the farm containing three brand new inverters. Eddie explained that Bowler Energy had experienced some problems on arrays with these particular inverters fitted. The supplier admitted they had a faulty batch and Bowler Energy negotiated to have all inverters which could potentially be affected replaced at no cost to the client. This is forward thinking and I am pleased that Bowler Energy has provided me with this level of service as you don’t know there is a problem with an inverter until it is too late. Therefore they have taken the necessary steps to prevent this happening on my site.”

FARMERS UK NEWS

the future Potato Council sharpens focus to deliver forrgrowth Announcing a consultation on Potato Council’s new business plan at the Seed Industry event held in Perthshire 25 November, 2014, Potato Council chair Fiona Fell enthused about the AHDB Division’s new focus. “The potato arena is a challenging place to be in at the moment,” acknowledged Mrs Fell. “Changing consumer purchasing patterns coupled with an on-going oversupply at home and in Europe has resulted in tremendous volatility and severe downward price pressure.” The Potato Council team is listening to levy payers, analysing market dynamics and looking for ways to support potato producers in this tough and evolving market place. "An all year round, competitive supply of top quality British potatoes needs to be underpinned by innovative and cost effective storage. This new plan will take Sutton Bridge Crop Storage Research Centre forward, and funds will be committed to unlock external funding opportunities to refurbish and develop the storage research and knowledge transfer capability. Growing the value of the levy by exploring and winning matchfunding opportunities created under the Agri-Tech Strategy and RDPE will be fundamental. Potato Council has already submitted a comprehensive application to the EU for funding to promote fresh potatoes, hoping to double its budget for carefully targeted work. The new partnership with BordBia in Ireland if successful will yield vital funding from the EU 42

worth £1.5M over three years. “AHDB and Potato Council needs to concentrate sufficient resources on key activities, in order to create true impact,” highlighted Mrs Fell. To deliver the ambitious plan, Potato Council proposes a subinflation increase in levy of 1.96 per cent for 2015/16 which will require ministerial approval after a period of consultation. This represents £0.84/hectare for growers and £0.0036/tonne for purchasers. "We have looked critically at costs, and have managed to keep the increase below inflation whilst providing the necessary funds to continue to provide the unique activities and quality services that our levy payers have fed back that they value,” stressed Mrs Fell. We will be determining GB's capacity and willingness to fight back against European competition. With a 1.4Mt raw equivalent trade imbalance in 2013 and 1.4Mt of domestic production destined for secondary uses, the Potato Council team will be looking creatively to see where the opportunities lie. The plan will also deliver new formats and relevant tools for agronomists and advisors to ensure that new information and best practice gets to growers rapidly. Potato Council’s flagship event

BP2015, which uniquely draws the whole British supply chain together, will return to Harrogate at a new venue with a bigger footprint, 12 and 13 November 2015. “BP2015 will have a better environment to do business, will provide the capacity to allow further exhibitor numbers and provide an enhanced platform to seek out and discuss the innovations and knowledge that will underpin the potato industry going forwards,” noted Mrs Fell. Keeping it simple and making it efficient translates into value for money, according to Herefordshire grower and Potato Council Board member Bill Quan. “Difficult times demand strong leadership with a forward looking creative plan,” said Mr Quan. “As a recent newcomer to the board, I’ve been impressed with the team’s focus on value for money, strong financial discipline and cost-control. It means Potato Council will continue to deliver activity against agreed priorities.” The draft plan will be made available for levy payers to review and feedback their views on whether the plan addresses industry priorities. The consultation starts on 28th November, 2014 and runs for a seven week period. "Delivering the right tools and knowledge so that our levy-payers can operate the most efficient and sustainable businesses they can, is paramount, and is at the heart of the Potato Council's renewed approach," concluded Mrs Fell

FARMERS UK LIVESTOCK NEWS

Mycotoxins: less myth, more management via feed - forages, moist feeds, compound feeds and cereals – and also in bedding. Alltech mycotoxin testing (including grass silage, TMR, whole crop and brewers grains) • 206 Sample tested • 100% Contaminated It’s small wonder that mycotoxins not only create problems, but also breed myths believes Graeme Smith, National Sales Manager of Alltech UK. Toxic compounds produced by moulds and fungi, mycotoxins can be present where no mould is visible. When eaten by livestock, different mycotoxins cause different symptoms, yet combined, the same compounds can cause a totally new set of problems. The symptoms of a mycotoxin challenge can easily be mistaken for other health issues or masked by poor management. Most perplexing, there are a range of solutions available, some claiming what seem like magical properties. So where do we stand? Mycotoxins are clearly a complex challenge. But as with any confusing problem, the best recourse is scientific fact. So what do we know? The facts Extensive mycotoxin testing, using the Alltech 37+ programme, has shown that the majority of farm systems, and livestock, are exposed to a degree of mycotoxin challenge

46

• Up to 11 different types of mycotoxin on each sample • On average, more than 6 different groups of mycotoxin per sample The degree to which performance is affected will be based on how much contaminated feed is consumed. Also, for ruminants, the pH of the rumen is a factor – plus any other challenge to the cow’s immune system within the environment will exacerbate the effects. In dairy cows typical mycotoxin symptoms include: • Loose dung compared with others in the herd • Dung containing mucus tags or intestinal lining • Higher incidence of clinical mastitis • Lower limb swelling: front or back legs and/or teats • Higher degree of lameness • Daily fluctuation of individual milk yields • Silent heats • More repeat breeders due to early embryo mortality or abortions • General ill-thrift, lethargy and poor coat condition

The above symptoms, including soiled backs and rumps requiring greater levels of bedding material and the potential for raised bactoscan levels in milk, can lead to reduced productivity and ultimately profitability. They can also have implications for cow welfare and/or non-compliance with milk buyer and supermarket requirements. Management So, how best to manage this very real challenge? • Remove suspected feed. If you can afford to throw it away (and wish to identify it with 37+ testing) this should solve your problem. • Reduce the quantity fed. This can lead to prolonged use of infected feed/forage and can actually raise mycotoxin levels and the challenge experienced. • Feed suspected material to animals that are less susceptible. This involves the risk of feeding a known contaminated feed to a segment of your livestock. • Include a binder within the ration. This risk averse option needs to work quickly (mycotoxins can be in the blood stream within 20 minutes of being ingested) adsorbing and harmlessly removing mycotoxins to reduce the challenge faced. Which binder to choose? Over the last 3-5 years there have been a growing number of products entering the market that claim to deal with mycotoxins. So, what do you need your binder to do? With the results of Alltech 37+ testing showing a wide range of mycotoxins present in a wide range of feedstuff,

the ability to deal with a broad spectrum of mycotoxins would seem to be the no. 1 priority. This ability depends on what binders are made of and different binders, based on various raw materials are effective against varying types of mycotoxins. With a variety of names such as BioTransformers, Clay based and Live Yeast and with a myriad of claims, mycotoxin binders can present a confusing array of options. “In general terms” suggests Mr Smith “I would encourage farmers to ask a series of questions to their nutritionist or feed supplier to determine what solution might be best for their circumstances. • What mycotoxin challenge am I facing?

• What University level research is available to demonstrate that the product works in the animal species for which it is being recommended? • What University level research is available to demonstrate the mode of action of the product? • Are there any local testimonials to demonstrate farmer confidence? “In every case however I would encourage farmers to know what they are dealing with and routinely test their feedstuffs,” says Mr Smith Better business decisions In the end, it rests on doing your best to protect your animals’ performance and welfare - and making the best decision for your business. Which product will deal with the different types of

mycotoxin on the farm? And is the recommended inclusion rate similar to that at which research was conducted? However, to fully protect your investment and livestock, choose a product that will cover the broadest range of mycotoxins and base your decision on an understanding of which mycotoxins are present in feed and bedding. “We are still learning much about this hidden danger,” concludes Mr Smith, “and undoubtedly there will continue to be many conflicting messages, however, the science and testing methods are becoming much more robust providing vets and nutritionists with much greater knowledge and the tools to protect profits”.

First Milk pay to dairy farmers delayed by two weeks More than 1,000 British farmers will not be paid for their milk on Monday because of a financial crisis at the dairy co-operative First Milk. First Milk told farmers that Monday's cheque and all subsequent payments - will be delayed by a fortnight. The National Farmers' Union president said news of the deferral had made members "extremely anxious". But a co-operative spokesman argued the move would "put our finances and our business on a stronger platform". First Milk is one of the UK's largest dairy farmer cooperatives, and runs a number of milk production facilities across England, Scotland and Wales. As well as withholding money from farmers for a fortnight, the company announced on Thursday it would increase capital levy contributions and recoup extra capital from its members. NFU President Meurig Raymond said: "Make no mistake, I have heard from NFU members, some who are extremely anxious."

He stressed it was "paramount that the financial stability of First Milk is secured". The co-operative's chairman, Conservative MP and ex-farming minister Sir Jim Paice, said the company was "acutely aware of the difficulties this current extreme volatility is causing". He added that banks had been informed and their staff would be ready to deal with queries from farmers whose direct debits bounce.

Freddy Conquers the Competition for Eye Muscle Area Charolais leader, Vexour Freddy, has topped the table as the number one bull for eye muscle area in the UK. The figures published by ABRI Breedplan confirm Freddy’s unique combination of conformation and growth with +9.4 eye muscle area and +4.3 for retail beef yield (making him the number two in the breed for this trait). Freddy’s supreme success in eye muscle area and retail beef yield make him an ideal bull to produce suckler bred calves for the beef supply chain. He has a good level of fat cover meaning excellent finishing and carcase weights can be achieved at a young age. Freddy’s owner, Simon Frost, has recently weaned a batch of Freddy cross bred calves, he said: “I am extremely pleased with the conformation and growth rates. My top heifer calf at weaning had a daily live weight gain of 1.71 kgs and my best bull calf came in at 1.89 kgs; both with birth weight removed. Freddy is consistently producing top

quality heifers and certainly proving himself as a modern Charolais for the modern beef producer. I can recommend this bull without reservation.” Cogent’s Beef Sire Analyst, Boomer Birch said: “We always believed Freddy would perform well and with a great pedigree plus exceptional figures behind him, it seems that he will continue to rise above the competition. His first

progeny are displaying outstanding loins with quality, cleanness and definition. With 37 pedigree progeny registered to date, his figures have shot up and we are more than impressed. It is clear to see that Freddy will not only breed top terminal index bulls but he will be at the forefront in producing prime cattle.”

being in with the chance of winning an elite Holstein embryo package and an all-inclusive trip to Holland. Owain Harries, Cogent’s Genetic Procurement Manager, said: “The Cogent Futures programme is a wonderful opportunity for budding geneticists, sire analysts and devotees of cattle breeding to learn vital skills and get a true taste of genetics. The competition is now in its sixth year and I have seen it go

from strength to strength. The Futures programme offers a real opportunity for participants to shape both their own futures and the future of cattle breeding.” For the chance to take part, contact Catherine Jackson on 01244 622074 or catherine.jackson@cogentuk.com. Subsidised Barren Ewe Blood Test Now Available MILTON KEYNES, UK, January 2, 2015 – With sheep scanning well underway shepherds with a flock barren rate greater than two percent can now ask their vet for a subsidised blood test to establish whether the cause of the problem is toxoplasmosis. EXPERTIS™ Barren EweCheck – the diagnostic scheme supported by MSD Animal Health (known as Merck Animal Health in the United States and Canada) – is now available from vets until 31st March 2015. Toxoplasmosis is the main infectious cause of early embryo loss in sheep and is a very common cause of barrenness, abortion and weak lambs born alive. Data from the 2014 EXPERTIS Barren EweCheck scheme showed that 85% of flocks tested had been exposed to the toxoplasma parasite. According to MSD Animal Health technical manager, John Atkinson MRCVS, sheep pick up the toxoplasma parasite from the environment – from contaminated pasture, feed and water, for example. “Infected cats shed toxoplasma eggs in their faeces and sheep pick up these eggs as they eat. The eggs are tough and can survive in the environment for over a year, which means farmers need to take steps to protect their sheep. The good news is that where toxoplasma infection has been confirmed in a flock the disease can be controlled effectively by a vaccination regime. What’s more, the costs of a prevention programme can be easily covered by a reduction in future flock barren rates,” he says. Producers concerned about a high proportion of empty or aborting ewes should talk to their vet about the service as soon as possible.

New measures to trengthen bovine TB strategy

Further measures to combat bovine TB as part of our comprehensive strategy to beat the disease in England have been confirmed by Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss. A Biosecurity Action Plan is published today which sets out plans to help farmers reduce the risk of disease spread on their farms, and there will be a new service giving farmers within the badger cull areas bespoke veterinary advice on TB management. This comes as the results of the second year of the badger culls were published. The advice of the Chief Vet is that the results in Somerset show that the approach can be carried out effectively. Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said: During the last Parliament bovine TB rates in England soared to the highest in Europe. That is 54

why we are taking strong action in pursuing our comprehensive strategy, including tighter cattle movement controls, vaccinations and culling. The Chief Vet’s advice is that results of this year’s cull in Somerset show they can be effective. That is why I am determined to continue with a comprehensive Strategy that includes culling. There are also plans to launch a consultation on a package of tougher cattle measures in the New Year, including statutory postmovement testing for cattle entering the Low Risk Area. Other planned measures for next year include launching a web-based map showing locations of TB under new statutory powers introduced earlier this year and publishing disease reports for the Edge and Low Risk Areas. We have also awarded £50,000 in small grants to

livestock markets to support measures to encourage cattle purchasers to give greater consideration to the TB risk of animals they are buying. Independently audited results of the badger culls show that this year 341 badgers were removed in Somerset and 274 in Gloucestershire, with levels of humaneness and a high standard of public safety maintained. In Somerset the minimum number of badgers was exceeded. The results for Gloucestershire reflect the challenges of extensive unlawful protest and intimidation. The European Commission has endorsed the government’s comprehensive TB eradication programme by providing further financial support in 2015, showing that the government’s TB Strategy is recognised to be comprehensive and effective.

Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales

A series of meetings are being held on beef and sheep farms across Wales during January to promote best practice in silage production and management. Three events, arranged by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC), will focus on the advantages of good silage management which inevitably leads to improved animal health, welfare and profitability. The first event on 14 January at Cilgryman Fawr farm, Cwmfelin Mynach, Whitland will be an opportunity to see the evidence of high quality forage being fed to maximise animal health and productivity. During the course of the day, Dr Dave Davies of Silage Solutions Ltd will highlight numerous ways of avoiding health problems in livestock through effective silage management. Farmers attending the event will also have an opportunity to listen to

Sion Parry of Signet. He will explain how the quality of finished stock can be improved through genetic improvement. Dr Davies, who is the author of HCC’s latest publication, Silage and Health, will also speak at the other two events. An open meeting at Glanystwyth, New Cross, Aberystwyth on 22 January will focus on silage quality and will include a demonstration of the farm’s self-feed silage system for sheep. The last event, held at Dyffryn, Foel on 23 January, will look at how attention to detail produces high quality silage and Arwel Owen will explain his hands-on approach to using EBV’s and genetic improvement in cattle and sheep. “With several months to go before the start of the silage season, this early advice on silage management will give farmers time to plan and make changes to their usual routine

of growing, cutting and producing grass,” said Lynfa Davies, HCC’s Technical Development Executive. “Farmers are encouraged to register their attendance at one of the events by contacting HCC on 01970 625050, texting their name and ‘Cilgryman Fawr’, ‘Glanystwyth’ or ‘Dyffryn’ to 07970907229 or by sending an e-mail to info@hccmpw.org.uk.” The events will be held between 10:30am – 2:00pm and refreshments will be provided. The Silage and Health booklet contains a 10 point plan on how to produce high quality silage. It also includes details of diseases that can lurk in poorly prepared silage, and what action to take to eliminate those risks. A copy can be foundon HCC’s w e b s i t e : http://hccmpw.org.uk/publications/f arming_and_industry_development /grassland_management/

A "True CLAAS" The new ATOS follows the modern, yet functional, CLAAS design and so fits seamlessly into the large CLAAS tractor family. With its compact dimensions, the ATOS is extremely manoeuvrable and ideal for all kinds of farm work. Large range of power options with four and three-cylinder engines The ATOS is powered by a Stage IIIb/Tier 4i-compliant engine. The 300 series uses a 4 cylinder engine that has a 3.8 l displacement, whilst the 200 Series has a 3 cylinder engine, with a 2.9 l displacement. The engines feature a common rail injection system, turbocharger and charge air cooler. Exhaust after treatment is carried out by a diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC). Cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system ensures maximum efficiency. The catalytic converter is integrated under the bonnet leaving clear all-round visibility. High torque values of up to 436 Nm mean that the ATOS is extremely responsive to drive. The fuel tank holds up to 145 l and the standard equipment also includes an engine speed memory function. Wide range of transmission options With three different variants, CLAAS offers a transmission to suit every customer. The range includes a standard manual transmission for basic applications, the TWINSHIFT transmission with two powershift speeds or the TRISHIFT transmission with three powershift speeds. All transmission variants are available with either a mechanical reverser or the REVERSHIFT clutchless variant. Three power take-off options are

also available for the ATOS with the following speeds: • 540 and 540 ECO • 540/540 ECO, 1000 and 1000 ECO. An automatic power take-off system and a separate groundspeed power take-off for powering trailers are also available optionally.

hydraulic FLEXPILOT control system. The rear linkage can also be controlled mechanically or electronically as an option. The ATOS 300 has a maximum lift capacity of 4.8 t at the rear, while the ATOS 200 can lift up to 3.6 t.

New: SMART STOP A special feature of the ATOS is the new SMART STOP function for the transmission when equipped with REVERSHIFT. When activated, using a button on the dashboard, the system automatically declutches when the brake pedal is depressed. Stopping and starting is carried out solely using the brake pedal. This makes SMART STOP ideal for repetitive actions around the yard, especially when using a front loader, and equally in the field, for instance when round baling. The SMART STOP function shuts off automatically at higher speeds. The ATOS can be equipped exfactory with a fully integrated 1.9t capacity front linkage. The front linkage console can be operated either with the mechanical PROPILOT control system or the

option provides an increased hydraulic output of 60 l/min at a reduced engine speed of 1600 rpm – thus lowering fuel consumption. A total of four spool valves are available. The ATOS is available in both twoand four-wheel drive variants across all models. The maximum tyre size for the ATOS 300 is 38", and for the ATOS 200 the maximum size is 34". The new ATOS is equipped with a comfortable four-pillar cab, which provides excellent all-round visibility of the working area. Furthermore, all of the functions are clearly arranged within the cab. The doors open over a wide range, making it easy to enter and exit the cab. Thanks to the glass roof hatch, the driver always has a good view over the front loader and ensuring they can work safely and accurately at all times.

The standard hydraulic pump has an output of 55 l/min. The ECO

New from John Deere at FTMTA Farm Machinery Show John Deere’s new 6R and 7R Series tractors and 8000 Series self-propelled forage harvester, all featuring the company’s latest fuel-efficient, Stage IV compliant engines, will be making their Irish debut on the John Deere stand at the 2015 FTMTA Farm Machinery Show next February. Spearheading the 6R Series midsize tractors from Mannheim, the sixcylinder 6215R features enhanced manoeuvrability, improved operator comfort and an industry leading extended service interval of 750 hours. The tractor is powered by a new 6.8-litre engine rated at 215hp (97/68 EC), with an extra 40hp boost available for transport and pto work from the intelligent power management (IPM) system. Fuel efficiency of this new model can be enhanced by choosing either the established AutoPowr continuously variable transmission or the new, advanced double-clutch DirectDrive transmission. The new CommandARM – as featured on John Deere’s latest 7R and 8R Series tractors – features an electronic joystick and a Generation 4 CommandCenter display. In addition, this FarmSight-ready 6R Series tractor can be fitted with JDLink telematics as an option, to include remote display access (RDA) and wireless data transfer (WDT). John Deere’s 7310R was the company’s first European tractor to feature a Stage IV compliant engine. This top of the range 7R Series model produces 310hp at rated engine speed, with an extra 30hp for transport and pto applications, and heads a range of five other tractors from 210 to 290hp.

Even with the addition of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to the engine, John Deere can claim to reduce total fluid consumption to even lower levels than before – the 7310R recently set a new fluid efficiency record for high horsepower Stage IIIB and Stage IV tractors in the DLG’s demanding Powermix test in Germany. The new 7310R tractor offers a choice of AutoPowr or the newly designed, fully automatic e23 transmission with Efficiency Manager, which has 23 equally spaced power shiftable forward gears and 11 reverse. This allows the operator to preset the working speed, and helps to save fuel by keeping the engine rpm at an optimum speed by automatically shifting up and throttling back. Other new features on this tractor include the CommandView III cab with CommandArm console and Generation 4 CommandCentre display. Integrated systems also enable the use of John Deere’s FarmSight precision farming technology. The top of the range 8600i wide body self-propelled forage harvester on show features a 625hp 13.5-litre John Deere engine, the unique, award-winning HarvestLab constituent sensing system and new KernelStar2 multi-crop processor. The forager’s AutoLOC (automatic length of cut) feature allows the operator to pre-select the precise cutting length based on actual forage conditions. John Deere is currently the only forager manufacturer with a proven,

accurate, commercially available system for measuring both grass and maize constituents in real time. Mounted on the forager spout, the versatile HarvestLab system can be removed easily for stationary feed analysis of different forage ingredients and for

clamp silage analysis in the winter. Additional new features on the 8000 Series foragers include the ADS Twin Line fully integrated advanced dosing system for silage additive application, and a wide range of headers. These include grass pickups from 3 to 4.5m and Kemper rotary headers from 6 to 9m wide. Kemper maize headers are optionally available with automatic steering and/or automatic header control. For wholecrop harvesting, John Deere also offers the Zürn ProfiCut 620, a highly efficient silage header that leaves clean, low-cut stubble. Other new John Deere machines making their FTMTA Farm Machinery Show debut include the 5M, 6MC and 8RT Series tractors, midspecification M700 trailed sprayer, F440R fixed chamber round baler and the latest model T560 combine harvester and XUV 855D Gator 4x4 utility vehicle.

Suzuki courtesy ATV scheme keeps farmers on the move

Suzuki GB is pleased to be continuing its courtesy ATV scheme throughout its extensive Dealer Network. The pioneering initiative from Suzuki offers customers the use of a new Suzuki ATV when any utility ATV – regardless of the make or model – is taken to an authorised Suzuki Dealer for service or repair work. The courtesy ATV scheme was introduced to help minimise down time and to keep businesses operating smoothly while their ATV is serviced. It has already proved popular among businesses as George Cheeseman, Sales and

92

Marketing Manager – Suzuki ATV & Marine Division, explains, "The courtesy ATV initiative is designed with our customers in mind and demonstrates that we understand the nature of their businesses – particularly during this busy season. Knowing that the scheme is minimising disruption to businesses up and down the country is really encouraging, so we have decided to keep the scheme running through our Dealer Network for the foreseeable future.” From the introductory model, the Ozark 250, right up to the flagship KingQuad 750, Suzuki

utility ATVs stand by farmers in the remotest of locations and the harshest of environments – and are always relied upon to be ready to take on a day’s work. George concludes, “Knowing that farmers put as much time and passion into their businesses as Suzuki does into developing its product line-up means that we are fully committed to keeping businesses running as smoothly as the ATVs themselves.” To find out more information please visit www.suzuki-atv.co.uk. SIMA 2015: Gold Medal and Special Mention for CLAAS Harsewinkel. The completely new PANORAMIC cab concept on the ARION 400 tractor, which was launched this year and reached the final round of the "Tractor of the Year 2015" competition, was the recipient of one of two gold medals. The new VARIO cutterbar for combine harvesters also received a special mention. Gold for PANORAMIC cab The key feature of the new PANORAMIC cab is its 2.41 m² windscreen. The windscreen and polycarbonate roof are connected to each other without an upper crossbar. This gives the driver a completely new feeling of space and an unimpaired 90° field of view over the front loader. Félix Garrad, Product Manager of the ARION 400 model series at CLAAS Tractor, explained the special challenges encountered during development of the PANORAMIC cab: "The PANORAMIC cab is ideal for working with a front loader. We needed a solution which, on the one hand, ensured safety and reliability while, on the other hand, doing away with components like the upper crossbar which limits visibility." Since the driver's view of the front loader is not impaired by any blind spots, the driver can always sit in a comfortable position. This avoids all of the repetitive movements which place stress on the neck and lumbar spine of the driver and can cause back problems. The jury found this to be a remarkable development in the areas of prevention, safety, comfort and productivity.

Special cutterbar

mention

for

VARIO

The jury found that the new VARIO cutterbar in the VARIO 930 and 770 models with cutting widths of 9.30 m and 7.70 m for the TUCANO and LEXION combine harvesters offers the required level of technical flexibility to master today's harvesting processes with their regular crop rotations. The crop dividers and rapeseed cutting knives can be attached and detached without the use of tools thanks to the quick-release couplings. The cutterbar table of the VARIO can be steplessly and conveniently adjusted from the cab over a range of 700 mm (-100 mm to +600 mm). Whereas the rapeseed plates previously had to be inserted manually, they are now completely integrated into the cutterbar table on the new VARIO. "The new generation of VARIO

cutterbars represents the next logical stage in over 50 years of development of adjustable cutterbar tables. The new concept ensures quick adaptation to the grain and rapeseed harvest and is therefore the ideal system for harvesting the respective type of crop", says Matthias Stauffer, Product Manager at CLAAS Self-Propelled Harvesting Machines. The SIMA Innovation Awards are awarded every two years to recognise innovations in agricultural technology and agricultural services. This year, two gold medals, three silver medals and 18 special mentions were awarded. An international jury made up of 21 experts from the agricultural sector was responsible for deciding the award winners. Additional experts including numerous users, researchers and developers were on hand to advise the jury as required.

Front-Mounted Shedder for Biomass Harvesting

Kuhn Farm Machinery has added a new semi-mounted gyrorake to its range of hay and silage making equipment. With a 5.40 to 6.40 metre working width, the compact twin-rotor GA 6501 machine includes all of the main features from Kuhn’s range topping professional rakes, at a very attractive feature-to-price ratio. The GA 6501 delivers a central windrow from two rotating rakes which have an adjustable working width of 5.40 to 6.40 metres. Both rotors are equipped with 10 tine arms, each fitted with three tines per arm. The new machine uses a fully enclosed mechanical gearbox which requires a tractor with a minimum power output of 40hp. It sits on three super balloon wheels (16 x

6.50 – 8) for improved ground tracking and has folded transport dimensions of just 2.5 metres wide by 3.5 metres high, making it quick, easy and safe to move from one field to the next. “High quality raking is only possible if the tines can follow undulating terrain in a smooth and controlled manner,” explains Duncan McLeish, UK Sales Manager for Kuhn Farm Machinery. “As with all Kuhn gyrorakes, the GA 6501 features a three-dimensional rotor articulation design which allows the raking units to closely follow ground contours without damaging the underlying grass stubble and without contaminating the crop with soil.” An optional bogie axle further enhances the GA 6501’s ground following ability by aiding rotor guidance on the most difficult

terrain where the machine’s overall design ensures that high raking speeds are still possible. “The GA 6501 is perfect for grassland farmers who want a compact machine with a top-end specification,” Mr McLeish adds. “It enables high-quality forage to be raked quickly and effectively, producing perfect windrows even when working in crops of varying densities or when working to a certain pick-up width.”
