Dairy Crest to sell dairies business in £80m deal Dairy Crest is set to sell the assets of its dairies operations, including milkshake brand FRijj, to Müller UK & Ireland Group in a cash deal worth £80m. The owner of Cathedral City cheese and Country Life milk said the disposal will allow it to focus on its cheese and packet butter and spreads businesses, which together recorded revenues of £442m in its latest financial year. The announcement comes as the Surrey-headquartered group releases its interim results for the half year ended 30 September 2014. Revenue grew by 1 per cent from £672.2m to £682.1m while pre-tax profits plummeted from £19.7m to £0.9m following one-off exceptional costs of £19.3m. The process of the acquisition is expected to take several months and the sale is conditional on the approval of competition authorities as well as Dairy Crest's shareholders and employee consultation. After completion, the group said its focus will be on its "profitable, predominantly branded," cheese and spreads operations.

4

The sale includes Dairy Crest's factories at Foston (Lincolnshire), Chadwell Heath (Dagenham) and Severnside. It also includes the Hanworth glass bottling site, where Dairy Crest is consulting with employees on the site's future, and 72 depots. Dairy Crest will retain full ownership of the previously closed dairies at Totnes and Fenstanton, its Chard site, where it is also consulting with employees on the site's future, and a number of already closed depots. It will also retain Davidstow, Nuneaton and Frome, the cheese production, storage and distribution facilities; and Kirkby and Erith, Dairy Crest's spreads and spray oil manufacturing plants. Dairy Crest's dairy business processes and delivers about 1.3 billion litres of milk a year to major and small retailers, coffee shops, hospitals and residential customers. In the year ended 31 March 2014, the division recorded revenue of £944.8m. Dairy Crest chief executive Mark Allen noted that completing the deal would be "a positive development" for the

group and for the UK dairy industry. He said: "The combination of our Dairies operations with those of Müller Wiseman Dairies will create efficiencies and economies of scale that will help to create a more sustainable UK dairy sector that is better placed to compete on the global stage. "The disposal will allow Dairy Crest to focus on continuing to grow our successful and innovative branded cheese and spreads operations. We will also deliver additional added value sales through our whey investment. We are confident that this focus will deliver further medium term profit growth for our shareholders." "In the months ahead we will do all we can to minimise the uncertainty that we know today's news will bring for the many people associated with our business. I want to thank everyone who has been involved in Dairy Crest's dairies business over the years. Together we have worked hard to build a business of which we should be proud and which has a potentially exciting future as part of Müller Wiseman Dairies."

New strategy to support bees' needs

Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss is launching the National Pollinator Strategy to support bees and other pollinators The government is launching a new strategy to support bees and other pollinators that are vital for fertilising plants so they produce fruits and seeds. Organisations such as Network Rail, Highways Agency and the National Trust which manage more than 800,000 hectares of land in England have signed up to the National Pollinator Strategy, and pledged to take actions such as planting more bee-friendly wild flowers and allowing grass to grow longer.

10

Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said: As much as one third of the food we eat is pollinated by bees –from apples and pears to strawberries to beans. We now estimate the value of insects pollinating our crops and plants amounts to hundreds of millions of pounds. That’s why we are doing everything we can to help them thrive. Not everyone can become a beekeeper, but everyone from major landowners to window-box gardeners can play their part in boosting pollinators.

Motorway verges, railway embankments and forests will be used to create bee and insect friendly paradises as part of the major new strategy to protect the 1500 species of pollinators in England. Defra has also announced the first ever wild pollinator and farm wildlife package, which will see more funding made available to farmers and landowners that take steps to protect pollinators through the new Countryside Stewardship Scheme.

Defra is setting up bee hives on the roof of their building in London and supermarkets including Waitrose and Coop have been distributing bee-friendly flower seeds to their customers.

UK beer - pulling a billion pints for the world A record number of countries are now pulling more than a billion pints of UK beer in bars and restaurants across the world including Belgium and Australia, Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss announced today. New figures show the world has an ever increasing thirst for UK beer with our breweries exporting 1.1 billion pints to 113 countries in 2013 – more countries than ever before – generating £630 million for the UK economy supporting our long-term economic plan. Today’s announcement coincides with the Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss’ visit to Ilkley Brewery in Yorkshire which reopened five years ago and now produces 50,000 pints a week, exporting to more than 10 countries. Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said: There’s no doubt we’re world leading when it comes to our food and drink – Ilkley Brewery is a shining example - selling Yorkshire brewed beer to the bars of Tennessee and Georgia. And as a country we’ve had huge successes selling £630 million worth of our quality ale, lager and stout to restaurants, pubs and supermarkets abroad, building a stronger economy for the UK. We want to see British businesses build on this success. That’s why we’re supporting them, opening on average almost three new markets every week since 2010 and demonstrating to international

companies how attractive it is to invest in the UK. UK breweries are now selling pale ale and bitter to the far ends of the earth, including China, Bahrain and Mexico. More traditional beer nations are also supping up our pints including a record £147 million sold to the US and £93 million to Belgium in 2013. Not only are UK breweries now quenching the thirst of millions of people across the world, but increasing their exports has also helped grow the UK’s Food and Drink industry, which remains the country’s biggest manufacturing sector, greater than cars and aerospace combined. The entire food chain contributes £97 billion a year to our economy and employs one in eight people. There has also been a rise in

micro-breweries across the country. In the last four years the number has almost doubled from 739 in 2010 to 1,403 in 2013 with UK supermarkets stocking an ever increasing variety of brands as consumers place a premium on home-grown British produce. Brigid Simmonds OBE, Chief Executive of the British Beer & Pub Association, said: It is great to see British beer exports at an all-time high. The quality and diversity of our beers is creating new export opportunities, and after two consecutive cuts in beer duty, Britain’s brewers are growing in confidence and looking to invest, both within the UK and overseas. We will continue to work closely with Government on this great British success story.

Agri-farm: first female scholar on ‘changing perceptions’ First female benefits from Agri-farm Scholarship Sarah Wells

he gift of a charitable foundation on his retirement as Inaugural Chairman of Genus in 2004 was the start of an exciting new chapter of lasting significance for John Beckett. His Agri-farm Scholarship has already provided funding for seven members of the UK industry to study for an MBA at Cranfield School of Management. Here we talk to Mr Beckett and the first female recipient, Sarah Wells of Countrywide Farmers, to find out more about this unique experience.

T

Mr Beckett, how do you feel UK agriculture will benefit from the MBA Agri-farm Scholarship? In my experience as Chairman of Genus, the NWF Group and Belton Cheese, whilst UK agriculture is technically and scientifically excellent the instinct and culture for business management is less well developed. Agriculture is a very

12

different industry today. We are now in a global high risk, food and energy industry where collaboration and cooperation will bring about much larger businesses controlled by farmers. To survive, UK farmers and agricultural professionals need to be able to engage with, and therefore have the same capabilities as, other managers operating throughout the supply chain so we need to train future farm business and industry leaders. Whilst this is essential for the industry, I also realise that such an undertaking is difficult for those with farms, families and jobs: that is where the Agri-farm scholarship comes in – it provides the funds. The rest, the commitment, the hard work is up to those who take on the course. Why choose Cranfield for your MBA scholarship rather than an agricultural university?

Cranfield School of Management is one of the world’s leading business schools and its MBA is ranked amongst the best in the world by judges such as the Economist, the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal. Most importantly, students come from a variety of industries, countries and organisations outside agriculture. This adds a new, and very important, dimension to the students’ experience: it broadens their horizons, introduces new ways to approach and solve problems, allowing them to learn from other industries.

FARMERS UK NEWS

Sarah, what encouraged you to apply for an Agri-farm scholarship? As a Business Support Manager at Countrywide Farmers I work closely with both customers and our Agricultural teams providing the data, analysis and systems needed to ensure we develop the most effective, well targeted business campaigns. Having been brought up on a large estate in Herefordshire, where my father was Estate Manager I always knew that I wanted a career in agriculture. I also witnessed all aspects of the business: the deadlines, the problems, tough negotiations all along the food supply chain. It made me realize that business skills, the ability to manage, collaborate and organise are essential: computers or cherries, the principles and problems can be the same! The Cranfield MBA provides an excellent grounding in all the essential subjects from marketing and business strategies to finance and logistics. Countrywide certainly recognize the value of this training. They are keen to have staff with this level of skill and qualification and have been very supportive, meeting one third of my scholarship costs. I am enormously grateful to Countrywide, to John Beckett and the Agri-farm Board for providing me with this opportunity. As an Agri-Scholar, and the first female, how are you perceived? Even women doing an MBA are still in a minority: out of the 50 on my course only five are women. I am delighted to be the first Agri-farm scholar and as ever, I am keen to demonstrate that, in agriculture,

women do just as well as men. What is perhaps more interesting, from my contact with other students, is how surprised they are by just how sophisticated and well developed agriculture needs to be, and has become: the precision with which farmers approach inputs and applications, the level of science and technology involved. I am studying alongside people representing oil, computing, healthcare and the airline industry. My being here is all part of changing attitudes, which in itself is valuable. How have you found combining work with studying? No doubt, even with excellent support from Countrywide, studying whilst working takes dedication. I have opted to take the two year, part time course in which I study on alternate Friday and Saturdays and am just coming to the end of term one. However, the fact that we work in teams, collaborating with others to solve a range of business problems and develop our skills makes the whole process invigorating and very accessible. I have to stress that whilst my involvement with the National Young Farmers movement including my term as Herefordshire County Chairman - has been a great asset in developing many skills, I have no formal qualifications beyond A levels. So, I would encourage anyone else interested in improving their business skills to apply.

agricultural industry. My only criteria is whether I think the UK agricultural industry will benefit not only by developing better farmers but ideally individuals that will also play a role in the growth of the industry by involvement with industry organisations or politics. Sarah was an ideal candidate – enthusiastic, committed to agriculture and highly thought of by her employers Countrywide. Finally, Sarah, what are your future plans? Working in agriculture is something I have always been very passionate about. My time at Cranfield is giving me the skills to continue to develop my management career at Countrywide. They say it changes your life when you go to Cranfield, and it does – I would encourage anyone else who is thinking of applying to go for it! For more information on how to apply for the scholarship visit www.mbaagrifarm.co.uk

Mr Beckett – how do you select your candidates? So far, we have had 7 successful candidates: we welcome farmers and people in the wider UK

Murray mints new name at CropTec Calum Murray, lead technologist for sustainable agriculture and food at Innovate UK, gives Karen Brewer the low-down on the recent name change, where funding is focussed and what information will be available to farmers at CropTec 2014 on the 19th and 20th November at the East of England Showground, Peterborough. “Innovate UK is the new name for the Technology Strategy Board, adopted this summer and intended to better reflect its role in supporting business-led innovation. Around 130 agricultural and food projects have been funded to date, with further significant investments made through the £70m AgriTech Catalyst, part of the UK Government’s AgriTech Strategy,” says Calum, who will be speaking at the Managing with Precision Seminar at CropTec.

areas: new methods of crop protection; sustainable protein production (reducing the UK’s reliance on imported protein crops); food processing; trait measurement technologies; agricultural engineering solutions and tackling animal and crop diseases. “We will also be supporting the R&D innovation hub that will demonstrate some of the projects that we have helped fund. Visitors will have the opportunity to give their feedback and suggest what might be needed in future projects. Since the beginning, our aim has been to support the development of innovative, business led solutions that will improve production on the ground; feedback from farmers is essential in this process.” To date, Innovate UK has supported six main food and farming

Calum explains: “Projects are identified through a competitive application process. They must be collaborative and have to be both led and match funded by industry. The need for sustainable intensification of agriculture is now an established concept with farmers challenged with feeding a growing UK and world population against a background of climate change and pressure on resources. At CropTec, we will demonstrate how Innovate UK is supporting agricultural technology and how farmers can help shape that technology.”

Innovation and Business features at Croptec CropTec 2014 to be held at the East of England Showground, Peterborough, 19-20 November, will provide access to some of the latest crop technology being researched and developed and give visitors the opportunity to influence future research priorities. They will also be able to discuss the business performance of their own farms and compare it with units of similar size. Two new features are the R&D Innovation Hub, supported by Innovate UK, which will showcase the latest technological developments for arable growers and give an insight into some of the novel ideas that are currently in the pipeline; and the Business Hub, which includes a business advice area and the CropTec cost clinic. The hub will allow visitors to discuss their farm business with a range of business experts and advisers.

18

“All the products and ideas on show at the Innovation Hub are designed to help UK growers become more competitive in an increasingly global marketplace and visitors will be asked for their views on which areas of technology deserve further development and investment,” says Stephen Howe, CropTec’s development director. “Managing the cost of production is essential in a short-term market where prices are volatile and there remains much political uncertainty. But growers need to take a strategic approach when they look at reducing unit costs of production to avoid any longterm damage to their businesses,” says Mr Howe. “Advisers at the business hub will help farmers ensure that the decisions they make are made in a way that strengthens their businesses for the future.”

N.P. Davies Agricultural Contractors

NP Davies was established by Nigel Davies in 1981 providing a quality and competitive service to farmers and landowners. Based on the borders of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire we can easily travel to other counties when required. A range of agricultural services are offered including, Forage Harvesting, Baling, Cultivation, Drilling, Manure Slurry Digestate and Compost Spreading, Machinery Hire and Contract and Share Farming. Haylage, Hay, Silage, Straw and Maize are available for sale all through the year. Second hand machinery is also purchased and refurbished during winter months, and maintenance work is carried out for local farmers. This service along with fabrications are growing year on year. Ensuring crops are planted and harvested with precision during the few days contractors are on-farm is 26

vital. The importance of the short period on each farm to ensure good quality forage for livestock has been the driving force for Shropshirebased forage contractor Nigel Davies and his team. “Our aim has always been to complete the job to a very high standard whilst remaining competitive, rather than to be the cheapest operation”. A perfect operation is key to farmer’s profits, because a rushed job will mean forage quality suffers, resulting in a lower palatable feed. Mr Davies runs NP Davies Agricultural Contractors who are National Association Agricultural Contractors members with wife Julie and a dedicated team of full and regular part-time staff. Mrs Davies is largely responsible for keeping the company’s administration up to date as well as doing essential runs for consumables. Son Andrew, having studied Agricultural

Engineering at Harper Adams as well as undertaking contracting work in New Zealand and the US, now works for Agco. Daughter Samantha studied Land Management at Harper Adams, and is now working for Smiths Gore having recently achieved MRICS. Both still drive for the business. Muck spreading and ground preparations for spring crops start the years’ work load. “From April we drill maize with a precision drill capable of placing micro and bulk fertiliser with the seed. We gained a lot experience sowing sugar beet with a precision planter across the region for 20 years. Maize requires a good level seedbed, the seed depth and seed spacing in the rows are also critical. I started with a small acreage of maize against a much larger acreage of sugar beet which was a huge slice of our annual work, but the closure of the local beet factory in 2007 means maize has

This main focus on forage production means that Mr Davies has been able to make investments into this area to improve the service on offer. “Critical factors are chop length at harvest, dry matter, grain shatter and ensiling technique. I still actively drive with my staff and it is not uncommon to have a farm’s nutritionist, seed supplier or a machinery manufacturer on site looking at the quality of forage going off the field and into the clamp thanks to the good reputation we have gained”. N P Davies use high capacity triple mowers powered by high horse power reverse drive tractors. Grass can be turned by 10 rotor models depending on the dry matter required by the customer. Grass is raked with twin and quad rotor rakes depending on ground conditions and density of crop and by precision chopping, the grass can be compacted more efficiently creating a highly palatable feed. Wholecrop is a starch based, high dry matter and energy feed and can be fed to a range of animals. N P Davies use a direct cut header to forage all wholecrop, this is to ensure no contamination or loss of grain. A wholecrop processor is used with specialist wholecrop rollers which run at fine tolerances to make sure all grain is split. This is key to making a quality feed and cannot be compared to foraging without a crop processor. N P Davies specialises in maize foraging, key areas during the professional service include harvesting at the right dry matter, achieving a correct chop length, cracking the grain and last but not least consolidating the clamp. This is an area that NP Davies strive to

set themselves apart from the competition. Whether a tractor or loading shovel is used, or in some cases both depending on quantity of product going into the clamp the clamp dictates the speed of the forager. N P Davies prides itself on offering every customer the best possible precision chopped forage. By having better quality silage, additional feed and concentrates could be reduced. The silage made in just a few days could feed cows for a usual six month winter or more. For maximum profitability within this time cow intakes need to be improved and this would only be possible with highly palatable feed. The Kernal processor used in the forager for maize and wholecrop was imported especially to achieve a superior grain shatter. A range of different additives can be applied within the forage harvesting process if required.

Many of the Claverley-based business’ customers have increased their acreages in response to improvements in varieties, forage quality and the move to larger, if fewer, dairy herds. Mr Davies also supplies grass and maize direct to dairy and beef farmers in the area. Being involved with the Maize

Growers Association and seed suppliers I’ve followed the technical updates to ensure we are on top of the job. Claas harvesters are used extensively, with Mr Davies researching various technological advances to help improve forage quality. The characteristics of harvested maize for AD are different to that of a forage. Mr Davies has visited many AD plants in the UK and on the continent, I see the AD market being a big player. I can see maize and rye grass being used in arable rotations, growing these break crops looks appealing and is a good alternative. Also moving with the times is the company’s haylage business. Producing haylage for the equine market is rapidly replacing hay says Mr Davies says. Haylage has much lower dust and a higher nutrient value. That removes the need for

owners to soak fodder before feeding and cuts the need for additional hard feeds. About 120 acres is grown annually which is stored and then dispatched in loads varying from 20 bales taken by individual horse owners through to artic loads for large livery and working yards.

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL

We are very keen to develop the haylage market. For the grower it takes out much of the risk in waiting for that window in summer to cut, dry and bale hay. In between the main maize and haylage contracting periods the company undertakes a range of arable and grassland duties. Baling services are centred around two sizes of baler the 3x3 bale measuring 80x90cm at up to 8 foot long and the “quadrant” size bale measuring 120x70cm at up to 8 foot long. The balers can bale straw, haylage, hay, silage and miscanthus. Balers are equipped with moisture meters. N P Davies prides themselves on good quality bales. Also wrapping can be done as a part job or part of the baling operation, from 4 to 8 layers can be supplied and applied by our wrappers depending on the choice of the customer. All bales can also be stacked and transported to the customer requirements. Ploughing is the main primary cultivation carried out by N P Davies, 5 and 6 furrow ploughs are used and these can be set up depending on previous and next crop type. Subsoiling and discing can be

done together or separately, with or without a packer roller depending on the requirements. For germination a double set of discs can be used, for subsoiling eight legs can be used over a 4 metre section, or for a complete tilth 4 to 8 legs can be used, two sets of discs and a packer. For secondary cultivation a range of power harrows can be used, a 6 metre hydraulic folding power harrow does the bulk of the work, with the ability to call on a 3 and 4 metre power harrow also. Manure, slurry and digestate spreading is an area of the business that is growing, as farmers look to focus on their cattle. High specification machines are used to make sure that spreading of manure is accurate. For chicken manure spreader plates can be used to ensure an accurate spread. Compost can also be supplied and spread. Tractor hire is available with operator and fuel with 100-300hp tractors, also manure spreaders are available with or without tractor and operator with the option of spreader plates. A 360 degree excavator is available for hire with or without

operator, the 13 tonne machine is a multi purpose machine which can be used for a range of tasks from ditching to digging and general groundworks. This particular excavator can be supplied with a range of buckets. Road building and amenity services are also areas of the business seeing an expansion, road building has become more popular from farmers looking to improve cattle welfare, or install new tracks for better access or just improving old tracks. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff that include a number of local farmers’ sons who join us year-on-year for busy periods. That is important for customers as the drivers are the face of the company when going in and out of farms during forage harvesting and clamping. The fact we run a fleet of Fendts encourages drivers to continue working for us as they like the reliability and comfort. And from my point of view, Fendts are also economical and have very strong resale values. Mr Davies’ experience and investment in maize grain processing technology will enable customers to benefit. Other added value benefits for the customer include trailers running on low ground pressure tyres and high capacity and efficient machinery. Year-round demand for a quality product produced during a few days of intensive, efficient and accurate work by the NP Davies’ team will once again pay dividend.

FARMERS UK NEWS & ADVERTORIAL

It’s time for black-grass control with Atlantis WG

Forecasts for continued mild weather into November should focus growers’ minds on controlling black-grass this autumn, rather than relying on pre-em chemistry to ‘hold’ control over until spring. Bayer CropScience says the successful conclusion of the winter wheat drilling campaign, coupled with good establishment conditions, has favoured emergence of grass weeds such as black-grass and that there’s now a ‘golden opportunity’ to reduce this year’s black-grass populations significantly. “Controlling black-grass has always been difficult,” says herbicides development manager Gordon Anderson-Taylor in the company’s latest Technical Update, “but 2014 trials conducted by independent contractors and distributors showed that autumn is the time to be thinking about post34

emergence herbicide applications. “Weather forecasts into November predict that we’re unlikely to see any significant cold weather for two to three weeks, which means emerged black-grass will continue to grow and tiller. “Hoping to tackle large, well tillered black-grass plants with applications of Atlantis WG (mesosulfuron + iodosulfuron) in spring is tantamount to preparing yourself for a failed weed control programme,” he warns. “If you experienced poor control of blackgrass last season, don’t automatically assume you’ve got resistance to mesosulfuron – it’s more likely that the plant was just too big for the dose within Atlantis WG.” Results from ten UK trials during 2013-2014 showed that there was a 29% fall in efficacy between Atlantis WG applications made at GS11-13

and those made at GS23-25. “This drop-off in control is directly related to the increased size of the plant,” Dr Anderson-Taylor points out. “Since Atlantis WG was launched in 2003, the beginning of November has always been seen as its optimal application timing,” says Phillippa Overson, combinable crops campaign manager. “This year looks set to be a golden opportunity for growers to really get on top of blackgrass populations. “Little rainfall and above average temperatures over the next couple of weeks should provide some good spray windows,” she says, “particularly for those crops where black-grass is already well advanced. “You might still need to deal with cleavers and wild-oats in spring, but there’s good chemistry for those. You won’t get a second chance to deal a blow to black-grass, so take it now.”

Farmers reaping the benefits of the sun Ground Mount verses Roof Mount – The Popularity of the Solar Panel As the Feed In Tariff rolls into its fourth year of operation, the interest in Renewable Energy seems to only be gaining momentum. With Solar PV systems making up 87% of the total number of energy installations in the United Kingdom (OFGEM Dec 2013), it would appear that people are reaping the benefits of the power from the Sun. The South West is the largest producers of Solar Energy, producing 4.36 MW in 2013 alone (OFGEM Dec 2013). Of course, there are obvious reasons why the South West is the most ideal location to install a Solar PV System, or even a solar farm with the most access to sunlight in the UK, however, there is nothing to prevent any business from seizing the rewards of a renewable energy system. Many people are often concerned about whether their land gets enough sunlight to warrant a Solar PV system, however, the panels only require daylight and not sunlight to generate power.

36

A common myth surrounding Solar PV is that the land or roof of a property must face due south. However, current installations show that a 13% annual return is still possible with installations that face East/West. Another discussion which occurs when discussing Solar PV generation is whether a Roof Mounted PV system or Ground Mounted system is better. The truth is that there are benefits of both types of system and one is not necessarily better than the other. A Ground Mounted PV system enables a farm or business to make the use of spare land that cannot be used for other purposes, generating money it would not ordinarily produce. Farmers with small livestock such as sheep or chickens can still let the animals use the field as the height of the system will not interfere their grazing. Ground Mounted PV systems also enable large scale installations to take place which are capable of powering large businesses whilst making money by exporting unused electricity back to the grid. Additionally, there will always be room for expansion with a Ground Mounted system as a business develops or as profit is made. Bowler Energy have installed 2.3MW of Ground Mounted solar panels since the company started in 2011. When this figure

is compared the 3.2MW of Roof Mounted Solar fitted in the same time, it would appear that Roof Mounted is a slightly more popular option. This is likely to be a result of the company initially marketing roof mounted panels to fit on the top of existing chicken sheds on our freerange farms, from there we have developed out business to provide other types of renewable energy system. Another reason for the popularity of the Roof Mounted PV system is that it does not take up any extra land. Therefore businesses based on large scale industrial sites can benefit from a PV system which will still generate enough energy to power but not take up any additional space. The Roof Mounted PV system can often fall within ‘permitted development’ meaning that no planning permission would be required to install a system 50kW or below as long as there is a 1m spacing between the panel and the edge of the roof. Solar PV Systems are consistently going to be the most popular option of Renewable Energy because they are the most accessible. The Roof Mount verses Ground Mount decision will always remain down to the client’s personal preference and location. But one thing many people who have a Solar PV system can be sure of it that the return on investment and the reduction in energy bills is enough to encourage anyone to take the first steps towards a Solar PV system of their own.

Ernest Fenton is an arable and sheep farmer in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He also runs an ice rink for curling and, in March 2012, had a 50kW roof-mounted solar PV system installed by Bowler Energy on a new, purpose built barn. As you can imagine, maintaining an ice rink requires a massive amount of electricity. For Ernest the deciding factors in pursuing a solar installation were the income from the feed-in tariffs and the ability to moderate his electricity costs for the next twenty years. The idea behind the purpose built barn was so that a roof-mounted system could be installed at the optimum angle to gain maximum output – and the barn itself provides a useful storage area. This could not have been gained from a groundmounted array and it helped to make the project more viable. Before awarding the contract to Bowler Energy, Ernest did his research and contacted other solar PV installers, but he says that some of them were not very good at responding to the difficult questions that he asked, whereas Bowler Energy’s Eddie Chadfield was always at the end of the phone with answers to his questions. Ernest knew Bowler Energy were a longestablished company and the quotation was competitive, so it seemed a good choice to go with them. Planning permission was required for the installation which Bowler Energy dealt with as part of the package. The installation itself was very speedy – in fact Ernest recalls the installation team were working against the clock to get the system installed and commissioned before

the tariff reduction came into effect, which they did. All in all, the entire process from initial contact to completed and commissioned PV system took five months. Ernest has been very pleased with his new PV system. It has lowered his reliance on electricity consumption from the grid, which is quite significant considering the amount of electricity required to maintain the ice rink. Ernest used to only open the ice rink during the winter months but since the installation of the PV array he has been able to extend the opening season to include spring and autumn. Previously the cost of keeping the ice cool would have made this financially prohibitive but now that Ernest has less reliance on bought-in electricity, he can afford to use his own electricity produced by his solar panels to move his business forward. “Electricity consumption is heading in the right direction,” says Ernest. “The feed-in tariff income has helped to support the farm, which has been a godsend during these last few months. We would be in a very different position now if it wasn’t for that”. Ernest now has a full twelve months of production data available and can see that only one month out of twelve the panels performed under target – for the other eleven months the panels were either on or above target. Says Ernest “I have a friend on the south coast who has an installation the same size as mine on one of his dairy buildings. We compare output readings and every

month so far mine has beaten his by at least 10% and sometimes as much as 15%!” As part of the package Ernest opted to have a solar logger fitted, which is a device offered by Bowler Energy on all its PV installations to enable the client to monitor the output of their panels. The solar logger even alerts the client if output falls below a certain level. This can be particularly useful in the event of a malfunction which could otherwise go unnoticed until the next quarterly meter reading was due, by which time the financial loss would be considerable. Ernest is also very happy with the back-up support received from Bowler Energy. To illustrate this he talks about a phone call he had from Bowler Energy about twelve months after the PV system was installed. “I received a parcel at the farm containing three brand new inverters. Eddie explained that Bowler Energy had experienced some problems on arrays with these particular inverters fitted. The supplier admitted they had a faulty batch and Bowler Energy negotiated to have all inverters which could potentially be affected replaced at no cost to the client. This is forward thinking and I am pleased that Bowler Energy has provided me with this level of service as you don’t know there is a problem with an inverter until it is too late. Therefore they have taken the necessary steps to prevent this happening on my site.”

market GB seed potato exports resurge into Caribbean rgrowth

Image: (middle) Mr Manuel Rodríguez Izquierdo, Seed Company of Cuban Agriculture Ministry and (5th right) Dr Liuva Pérez López, Relations Department, Cuban Agriculture Ministry representing Sanidad Vegetal (Plant Health) with officials and plant health experts from Scottish Government, SASA, Fera and Potato Council.

A recent visit to Scotland by Cuban agricultural officials has led to a revised agreement for the importation of GB seed potatoes. Supported by the unique partnership between Potato Council and Scottish Government to boost export opportunities, senior officials from Cuba’s Agricultural Ministry and Plant Health section travelled to Scotland this month to meet officials from Scottish Government, SASA, Fera and Potato Council to view our seed potato industry at first hand and discuss revised import conditions for GB seed potatoes. The Cuban visitors were given a focused tour encompassing Scottish Government’s SASA’s plant health facilities, a seed potato micropropagation facility, and visited a leading Scottish seed grower and exporter – all demonstrating the high health and quality of GB seed production.

42

In 2013, it was reported that Cuba spent over £1bn on food imports, representing around 60% of its domestic food requirement. Since 2007, the government has made food security a priority and there is an increasing requirement for increased domestic crop production including healthy, highyielding potatoes. Robert Burns, Head of Seed and Export at Potato Council led the Inward Mission to Cuba earlier this year with SASA to progress official discussions. Rob advised “Cuba used to import 30K tonnes of seed potatoes each year, some of which came from GB. But in recent years this dwindled to just a few thousand tonnes. However, Cuba has an early growing season and an emerging requirement for both fresh and processing varieties so there have been great hopes to revive this market as an important destination for GB seed.”

Agriculture employs around 20% of the Cuban population, and Cuban state farms hold over 70% of Cuba's agricultural land - about 6.7m hectares. In 2008, in a move to increase productive use of state land resources, private farmers and cooperatives were permitted to lease any unused land for production, and regulations were loosened so farmers could sell directly to consumers. Also, Cuba has been plagued by ‘El Marabú’ (Marabou), an invasive weed which has overrun large areas of agricultural land. However, it turns out that Marabou is an effective biofuel and is now being cleared. This is releasing more land back into agricultural use, and no doubt helping to increase domestic food production - and sustainable potato crops - for the 11million population of this large Caribbean island..dpuf

Dairy & beef producers need BVD advice An inconsistent approach to the cattle disease Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) across England and Wales has raised veterinary concerns and brought a call for more targeted advice to help dairy and beef farmers tackle this complicated infection, reports Karen Brewer. James Russell, from independent vets McMurtry & Harding, said: “BVD is a serious, industry wide problem and one that farmers are clearly aware of, but much work needs to be done in providing practical advice about how they tackle the virus in their herds.“ Presenting results from the Farming Against BVD survey at Novartis Animal Health’s Surrey headquarters on Thursday 18 September 2014, Mr Russell said that while over 70% of respondents have a herd health plan incorporating BVD: “It is deeply concerning that 49% of farmers questioned had not tested their herd for BVD in the last 12 months and of those that did, 83% did not test their young stock. So whilst farmers may be aware of BVD, there appears to be a disconnect between awareness and practical activity in the detection and then eradication of infection from their herds.” Although effective vaccination against BVD has been available for the last two decades, the disease continues to cause significant problems; with infected cattle suffering from abortion, infertility and suppressed immune systems, leading to poor productivity. It was these issues that stimulated

54

Farming Against BVD panel members (L to R) James Russell (vet practitioner, McMurtry & Harding), Caroline Dawson (Novartis), Tony Brooks (herd manager, Brighthams Farm), Professor Joe Brownlie (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, chairman of BVD Scientific and Technical Working Group), Dr Peter Nettleton (fellow of the Moredun Research Institute – not pictured).

Novartis, in conjunction with the Royal Veterinary College and independent vets McMurtry & Harding, to initiate the Farming Against BVD survey, which questioned 301 dairy and beef farmers from every region of England and Wales, representing over 70,000 head of cattle. One of the most significant findings is the attitude of farmers towards testing and subsequent failure to identify Persistently Infected (PI) livestock within their herd. Any calf from a BVD PI cow will itself be born persistently infected with the virus and cannot be cured. As a result, future vaccination of this animal is rendered ineffective and it will become a source of the virus, spreading infection within the herd. Given the potential for such cattle to become reservoirs of infection within a herd, failure to test, identify and then deal with PI livestock represents the most significant problem facing the industry when trying to eradicate BVD.

Professor Joe Brownlie, from the Royal Veterinary College, voiced his worry that 39% of farmers who found BVD present in their herd did not then go on to test for PI’s. “Of the 61% of farmers that did do follow up tests, one third found one or more PI’s within the stock holding.” He said the disease can be hidden and farmers could be in the dangerous position of potentially missing PI animals that are in their herd; PI’s that can continue to spread the BVD virus amongst other cattle and pass on their PI status to any calves they produce. It is hugely important to be thorough and consistent in your testing as part of an agreed herd health plan.” The project, aimed at increasing farmer awareness and understanding of the virus, has been driven by a select panel of industry experts and indicates that action needs to be taken to educate farmers about what to do once BVD and, most significantly, PI's are discovered amongst a herd.

Anti-Dairy 'Experts' Failing Increasingly to Stick to the Facts Efforts to undermine the nutritional benefits of dairy products are becoming increasingly based on ill-informed opinion which betrays a lack of scientific knowledge and understanding, The Dairy Council said today. In recent months there have been a number of media articles and appearances by people making unfounded and inaccurate nutritional and health statements about dairy. The latest example was published on the Daily Express website today, headlined “Is milk giving you cancer? Seven reasons to ditch dairy”. Dr Anne Mullen, Director of Nutrition at the Dairy Council, said: “Sadly, we are seeing an increase of articles and pronouncements by socalled experts who, it is quite clear, are failing increasingly to stick to the facts about dairy. “The dairy industry is regulated very strictly in what it can claim in terms of the health benefits of dairy. But it is not in the interests of consumers and good food safety practice for people to undermine the nutritional qualities of dairy with impunity and with scant regard to scientific evidence. It is irresponsible.” The Dairy Council today published a response to the Express article correcting the following points. Bovine Growth Hormone is not injected into cows in the UK and in the EU – this is a complete falsehood and shows a serious breach in

understanding of food production and food content. Studies have shown no association between milk and cheese intake and breast cancer risk, milk and dairy may be protective against breast cancer and that milk and dairy consumption have no effect on breast cancer survival. Prudently, the World Cancer Research Fund says that evidence of any connection is limited. The theory that milk and dairy ‘acidify’ the body, or the ‘acid-ash hypothesis’ is scientifically defunct. Milk and dairy foods do not cause acidity in the body. There is a profound misrepresentation of the degree of lactose intolerance in our population (about 5% of adults are affected) in this article, again betraying a lack of understanding of nutritional science. In people with lactose intolerance, research shows that 12g lactose (200g yogurt, 250mls milk) can be consumed per day without any effects. Milk and dairy foods are not fattening unless, like other energyproviding foods, they are consumed in excess in an unbalanced diet. Health weight loss and weight control are achieved through eating

a balanced diet that meets nutrient requirements and physical activity. There is little mystery to weight gain and weight loss. However, some studies have shown that including dairy foods in an energy-restricted diet may enhance weight loss. There is no evidence presented in the article to support the assertion that milk is associated with acne. It certainly is imprudent to state that giving up dairy and milk is ‘the best thing you can do for your skin’ as milk and dairy products contain an array of nutrients such as riboflavin and calcium that are important for health. Milk and dairy contribute 25% total energy, 34% of protein, 34% fat, 61% calcium, 64% iodine, 55% riboflavin and 63% vitamin B12, for example, to the diets of 1.5 to 3 year olds in the UK, as well as 36% calcium, 33% iodine, 28% riboflavin and 33% vitamin B12 to adults aged 19 to 64. It is reckless to fob off foods that provide so much to the nutritional health of the nation as ‘a bit weird’. The practice of dietetics and nutrition in the UK is regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council and the Association for Nutrition, respectively. The Dairy Council is staffed by registered dieticians and nutritionists and our remit is to provide evidence-based science on dairy and health. It is important that the public is given accurate scientific and nutritional information.

Suzuki courtesy ATV scheme keeps farmers on the move

Suzuki GB is pleased to be continuing its courtesy ATV scheme throughout its extensive Dealer Network. The pioneering initiative from Suzuki offers customers the use of a new Suzuki ATV when any utility ATV – regardless of the make or model – is taken to an authorised Suzuki Dealer for service or repair work. The courtesy ATV scheme was introduced to help minimise down time and to keep businesses operating smoothly while their ATV is serviced. It has already proved popular among businesses as George Cheeseman, Sales and

Marketing Manager – Suzuki ATV & Marine Division, explains, "The courtesy ATV initiative is designed with our customers in mind and demonstrates that we understand the nature of their businesses – particularly during this busy season. Knowing that the scheme is minimising disruption to businesses up and down the country is really encouraging, so we have decided to keep the scheme running through our Dealer Network for the foreseeable future.” From the introductory model, the Ozark 250, right up to the flagship KingQuad 750, Suzuki

utility ATVs stand by farmers in the remotest of locations and the harshest of environments – and are always relied upon to be ready to take on a day’s work. George concludes, “Knowing that farmers put as much time and passion into their businesses as Suzuki does into developing its product line-up means that we are fully committed to keeping businesses running as smoothly as the ATVs themselves.” To find out more information please visit www.suzuki-atv.co.uk. FARMERS UK NEWS & ADVERTORIAL

Front-Mounted Shedder for Biomass Harvesting A new front-mounted shredder for harvesting high volume energy crops such as Miscanthus is now available to UK biomas growers. Kuhn’s WS 320 BIO can also be used as a reverse drive shredder and features a hydraulic reel and hood, which enable large volume plants and lodged crops to be shredded easily and efficiently. Designed for use in conjunction with a baler for shredding and harvesting in a single pass the WS 320 BIO has a central rear opening and hydraulically driven worm screw, for windrow formation. The 72 Yshaped shredding knives turn at a relatively low speed, on a 220mm rotor, to deliver a coarse shredding

action and a typical 15cmplus chop length for easier pick-up by the following baler. According to Kuhn’s Duncan McLeish: “The WS 320 BIO has been designed to offer maximum reliability and uses thick steel plates and two sturdy support beams to

create a robust machine with a 3.23 metre working width.” Cutting height can be adjusted from 4 to 15cm and the recommended tractor power requirement is 150-300hp

Kuhn Farm Machinery has announced the launch of a new shredder to the UK fruit growing market. Designed specifically to operate between rows of fruit trees, the TRP 175 PRO is capable of shredding high volumes of leaf residue and thick, woody branches at high speed. It can also be used for light path clearing and verge shredding, making it a truly versatile piece of landscape maintenance equipment. The TRP 175 PRO has a 175cm working width and features a large volume casing for maximum output. It is fitted with a hydraulically driven, adjustable speed pick-up rotor, and is fitted with two high strength Domex steel rear grids with 60mm outlet holes for very fine shredding: the upper grid is hinge-mounted for easy access to the rotor. The new shredder is fitted with a 457mm diameter flail rotor, equipped with 1.65kg heavy hammer knives which are mounted onto toothed knife holders with robust 25mm pins. Capable of operating at up to 3,100 revolutions per minute, the knives and toothed holders, which are arranged in a helical pattern, hold debris within the body of the flail until all material has been broken down into fine fragments.

The TRP 175 PRO uses a central gearbox and a reversible head allowing the machine to be front or rear mounted. It can also be used with reverse drivestation tractors. As standard, the front hood is fixed, with a hydraulically adjustable roller available as an option – this enables the machine to be fine tuned according to the volume of debris to be shredded. “The TRP 175 PRO is the ideal machine for fruit farmers looking to shred high volumes of branch and leaf residue,” Jean-Sebastien explains Vecten of Kuhn Farm Machinery. “It is capable of shredding large amounts of woody material into a very fine pulp and is robust enough to cope most the with challenging conditions. A strong frame, tough gearbox and thick chamber lining make the new machine capable of withstanding heavy stone impacts and give the TRP a long working life.”

FARMERS UK NEWS

Government slashes red tape to boost tractor weight and speed limits.

Britain’s farmers will get a bumper harvest as the government slashes red tape to boost tractor weight and speed limits, Transport Minister Claire Perry has announced. The government will cut outdated regulation to allow higher tractor speeds and heavier tractor and trailer combinations from spring 2015. The government has also committed to develop detailed proposals for a roadworthiness test for tractors and trailers. Claire Perry said: Britain’s farmers have long suffered under out-dated rules which simply have not kept up with today’s technology. These changes will mean farmers

can carry more produce in each journey - delivering benefits of almost £62 million per year. Helping our farmers is a crucial part of the government’s long-term economic plan and updating the rules to better reflect the capabilities of modern machinery will boost the efficiency of the farming sector and the economy. Under the changes, the maximum combination weight limit for tractors and trailers will increase from 24.39 tonnes to 31 tonnes and will set a new effective speed limit of 25mph (40km/h), up from 20mph - saving time and money. Tractors allowed to exceed 25mph will continue to be subject to tighter design and

regulatory requirements. The increase in combined weight means bigger tractors can pull trailers without sacrificing cargo to meet the top weight limit of both tractor and trailer. This will maximise the amount of produce transported in each journey. These changes will also result in farmers having to make fewer journeys on our roads and so reduce the risk of accidents. The second phase of changes will see a further consideration of increases in weight and speed limits and a roadworthiness test for some agricultural tractors and trailers by summer 2016.
