Muller Wiseman decision 'unacceptable' The NFU has branded Muller Wiseman’s reasons behind the decision to cut the price it pays its suppliers for milk by 1.75ppl to 24.15ppl as “unacceptable”. Dairy farmer and NFU dairy board chairman Rob Harrison said it was entirely unacceptable for Muller Wiseman to introduce these cuts - which come into force from March 5 – with the claim that it was an attempt to “remain competitive” in the milk market. “We have seen the farm gate price dropping rapidly over the past nine months which has put many UK dairy farmers in incredibly difficult positions, with many considering their future in the industry. The fact that Muller has said the March price remains to be ‘one of the best available’ depicts a dire situation for the dairy sector,” said Mr Harrison. “We can accept that this has been a result of dairy market declines - DairyCo figures clearly show that the cream income to a processor has fallen by 45 per cent since January last year. However, there are now some positive signs on the European market and Friesland Campina increased its February milk price by €1.25 per 100kg milk and stated that ‘the upward price trend of foil cheeses, milk powders and butter’ will stabilise

supplying farmers. We now need other milk buyers to offer similar assurances over the next few months, especially with concerns on the impact of the spring flush on milk prices.

prices across their reference companies, and New Zealand has reduced its milk production forecast. “To see Muller Wiseman declaring that it is following others with price cuts is a deplorable change in direction. We need to develop trust between processors and farmers to ensure that changes are reflected honestly and with clarity, ensuring that when markets do recover this happens quickly to stop farmers suffering.

“Unfortunately Dairy Crest’s price drop came immediately after Morrisons announced the result of its recent milk tender reducing the volume of milk it will procure from Dairy Crest by a third and giving just one month’s notice. Such short term notice periods are completely unacceptable in the supply chain. The NFU has worked hard to ensure better terms and conditions between farmers and processors, but these mean nothing if changes can be made in such short timeframes higher up the chain. “Retailers must seriously consider how their decisions impact on British dairy farmers in the short and longer term.”

Read our guide to Backing British Dairy first. “Earlier this week, Dairy Crest announced that it was cutting the farmgate milk price by 1.5ppl but would not drop the price further before July. Although we are very frustrated by this further price cut, we are pleased that this at least provides some stability to its

Decline Predicted in Profitability of UK Farming UK - Defra’s latest Farm Business Income forecasts predict a decline in the profitability of farming across the majority of farming sectors and serve as a warning as to how much agriculture is susceptible to increased volatility, said the National Farmers Union (NFU). The figures show a 13 per cent fall in incomes for dairy farmers. Similarly, the livestock sectors have suffered, with incomes on pig farms forecast to be down by 23 per cent and on poultry farms by 12 per cent. Forecasts indicate that grazing livestock farms are showing signs of recovery. However, even with increases in income across the beef and sheep sector, profitability still remains at a very low level, with farm income in this sector projected to sit around £16,000. A marginal increase in incomes is also expected in cereal farm income. NFU president Meurig Raymond said: “2014 has been a year where, across commodities, the industry has seen falling farmgate prices and these figures are the first official ones to indicate the financial impact on farmers. “This challenging situation is particularly true for the dairy industry, where some farmers have seen dramatic cuts in the

price they receive for their milk and where the difficult market conditions could force many out of the industry. I’m afraid this snapshot doesn’t fully capture the desperate situation faced by some farmers. The average figures mask the breadth of milk prices currently received by dairy farmers or the cash flow challenges that farmers face in

“Ultimately, having a financially viable business gives farmers the confidence to invest in the future and build resilience. With less than 100 days to the General Election, it’s clear that there is a vital role for the future government to work with farmers to support growth and send the right business signals to invest. The NFU has outlined a number

Pig Farmers to be hit hardest

the coming months. “However, volatility is not entirely unique to the dairy sector. The price received by farmers for pig meat, wheat, potatoes, and oilseeds also plummeted in 2014. With the extent of those price shifts, alongside a stronger pound, it’s not surprising that farm incomes are down and at the same we see the confidence of farmers falling.

of policy asks which are laid out in our Election manifesto. “The opportunities for UK farming are clear – in the longer term global and domestic demand will increase. But for British farmers to benefit, we need the right policy and fiscal environment across government which encourages the sector to increase efficiency, develop and embrace technological advances, and take a long-term balanced view to investment.”

Farmers must not be left behind in broadband

Rural areas must have access to the same broadband speeds and mobile phone coverage as their urban counterparts, the NFU said today. The comments come following today’s publication of Efra Select Committee’s report on Rural Broadband and Digital Only Services, and ahead of the House of Commons Backbench Debate on rural phone and broadband connectivity this afternoon. The NFU is urging the next Government to ensure it is committed to exploring new regulations or incentives to encourage new technologies to

8

deliver better coverage for both services. NFU senior planning and rural affairs adviser Suzanne Clear said: “We are pleased that the select committee has taken on board concerns from the farming and wider community. Farming is a modern and progressive industry which requires truly superfast broadband so our farmers and growers can comply with regulatory reform, run effective businesses and maintain a family life. “We welcome the recommendation for the introduction of a voucher

scheme to subsidise the cost of satellite broadband for those eligible and for alternative technology pilot tests to be published and suitable schemes rolled out. However, it is vital this is accelerated as our members need superfast broadband now, not in two or three years’ time. “Our election manifesto is clear on our position on rural broadband. It is essential that there is a universal broadband equivalent throughout the country so our rural areas are not left behind.”

FARMERS UK NEWS

What are retailers doing to support British dairy? The UK dairy sector is currently facing a very real crisis, with 60 farms leaving the industry in December 2014 alone and a struggle for many others to keep farming. Over the last year farm gate milk prices have fallen by 33% in some cases and there are as yet, no signs of recovery early this New Year. The NFU is aware of some good work by retailers in establishing dedicated supply groups within liquid milk that help to ensure some farmers a sustainable price, as well as giving consumers assurance of origin. The NFU welcome these schemes, many of which have been in place a long time, and look forward to them continuing. However, there is much more work to be done before we will be satisfied that retailers truly believe in the supporting British dairy farmers in the long-run. The NFU are asking all retailers to do more and have outlined below our key demands: • Retailers must continue to support farmers where schemes are in place, or establish a scheme that can demonstrate a fair price is being paid to supplying farmers • Retailers must expand schemes further than liquid milk, to cover other dairy products, ensuring that required product volumes can be met through these schemes • Retailers must increase sourcing of British Own Label and branded dairy products across all dairy categories • Retailers must make the

10

provenance of British dairy products clearer for shoppers – ideally through displaying the Red Tractor – as well as ending the co-mingling of dairy products on display of differing origin • Retailers must publicly state their support of British dairy and make public the proportion of dairy product supplied by British farmers With the situation for dairy farmers likely to become Pint of milk increasingly difficult as we move into 2015, we need British retailers to support our industry in order to protect the future supply of the high quality dairy your consumers demand. The future of British dairy farming is at risk and the whole supply chain, including retailers, need to take visible action to protect the future of the British dairy industry. Outlined here are the basic details retailers support for British dairy. The information given is for ‘Own-Label’ supermarket products and is provided by the retailers – it does not

include branded dairy products and cannot be verified by the NFU. Retailers are listed by market share. Tesco: • Liquid milk is 100% British and is sourced from 650 members of Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group (TSDG). 100 day countdown for BPS registration The NFU is urging farmers and growers to ensure they have registered for the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) to claim farm payments in good time. Although more than 22,500 farm business have registered, the NFU says it is vital that with only 100 days left that more people take time out to familiarise themselves with the new system, register and start the process of making their first BPS claim. Richard WordsworthSenior BPS adviser Richard Wordsworth said: “Working with the RPA, the NFU has emailed and texted members in the recent weeks urging them to register so that they can in turn start the process of building up their first BPS claim. “All those wishing to claim BPS need to register and that includes those that have already registered for Single Payment Scheme (SPS) Online or for that matter used an agent to help with SPS last year. “Further functionality will be going live in the coming weeks, but do not delay the registration process.’ “If you think someone in your neighbourhood may need help in building their claim online, then do urge them to get in touch with the Rural Payments helpline to discuss what help is available. "The RPA has set up 50 support centres across England where farmers can get one to one face to face help, but to access them the RPA needs to be called first.”

Important information for claimants: To be eligible for BPS, a claimant must have at least five entitlements and five hectares of eligible land known as the ‘minimum claim size’. If a claimant has less than five entitlements and wants to transfer out their entitlements to another farmer, they also need to be registered on the new rural payments online service, as this service will be the only way to transfer entitlements before May 15 for another farmer to use them for BPS 2015. If a farmer has not yet registered, the first step is to go through security by proving who they are. This can be

12

done by calling the Rural Payments helpline on 03000 200 301. This line is open Monday to Friday, 7am-6pm, except Bank holidays, and Saturday and Sunday from 8am-2pm. Claimants must ensure they have their SPS information to hand as it will help to answer registration security questions posed by the RPA. They will also need to have a password and an email account ready to use. The registration process must be completed within 12 hours of the phone call by logging onto the Rural Payments website, where contact and land details can be checked and claimants can give others permissions to access claim data for those who may be submitting the final claim on their behalf.

Feeble excuses being used by abattoir CCTV specialist says cameras can protect reputations Following the news of the horrific animal abuse caught on camera at a Halal slaughterhouse in Yorkshire, Gary Trotter, general manager at CCTV solutions specialist – Hadrian Technology – comments on how CCTV could have prevented this from turning into a major incident and urges all businesses to think about how they are protecting themselves and their staff.

Undercover footage, recorded and released by animal rights group Animal Aid, has shown the extent of the animal abuse taking place inside a Thirsk-based Halal abattoir over a three-day period. Four slaughterhouse workers have had their operating licences suspended and one has been sacked, as a result of images showing sheep being kicked, punched and thrown into machinery by staff. Campaigners and MPs are now calling for independently monitored CCTV cameras to be made mandatory in all British slaughterhouses. Gary Trotter says: “This incident highlights how important it is for not just slaughterhouses but all businesses to have CCTV in place. In

this industry, it is vital in protecting animal welfare and in protecting the slaughterhouse as a business. With all the negative publicity surrounding this particular story, the slaughterhouse’s reputation has been damaged and this is likely to have serious repercussions in business terms. “Every time an incident like this happens, a spokesperson from the business concerned says that it is an isolated incident and is not reflective of the manner in which they run the business. Who believes that? “If these businesses genuinely wanted to be transparent they would proactively take the necessary steps to be able to demonstrate their claims, and the installation of High Definition Internet Protocol (HD-IP) CCTV systems would be one way of achieving that. “If this abattoir had installed CCTV, and was using it to its full potential with cameras focused on all the areas where animals are kept and killed, there would be a deterrent to abuse, and the workers now being accused of mistreatment could have been caught much earlier on. High definition cameras provide crystal clear image quality and facial recognition software, so employers can quickly and easily see which staff members are involved in a given incident. “As well as being able to ascertain which workers were at fault, the other benefit the abattoir would have experienced by having CCTV in place would have been the

prevention of the abuse of a significant number of animals. It has been reported that around 4,000 sheep were killed unlawfully over the three-day period.” Although this is obviously an extreme and shocking example of actions taken by staff that are going undetected due to lack of surveillance, Gary Trotter notes that this serves as a good reminder for all businesses to seriously consider investing in CCTV systems. He continues: “Having suitable CCTV provision protects both employers and employees. Employers are able to quickly spot anything going on before it escalates to become a major incident, and employees that are not doing anything wrong can rest assured that they will not be held to account. CCTV is an effective deterrent, so this type of animal abuse may not have happened at all if the perpetrators knew they were being watched. “Any business could find themselves in a similar situation to the abattoir – there have been reports of abuse going on in places such as care homes and hospitals in recent years. With the potential of losing staff, contracts and damaging business reputation, I would ask if employers can afford not to install CCTV. Hopefully this incident will lead to further discussion of this topic and encourage more businesses and organisations to seriously consider how to protect their interests and reputations.”

UK Sheep Farmer of the Year to host NSA Highland Sheep 2015 UK Sheep Farmer of the Year, John Scott, is hosting an open day on his farm in June to promote the sheep industry in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. NSA Highland Sheep 2015 is being organised by NSA Scottish Region and will be held at Fearn Farm, Tain, Ross-shire, on Tuesday 9th June. NSA Highland Sheep was held for the first time two years ago at Dingwall Mart and attracted a large number of sheep farmers from all over Scotland. “We are delighted that Mr Scott has kindly agreed to host this major event for the sheep industry in Scotland,” said NSA Scottish Region Chairman Mrs Sybil Macpherson. “Fearn Farm, with its flocks of 4,200 commercial and pedigree sheep, will be an ideal venue for this important event and Mr Scott’s success in winning the Farmers Weekly Sheep Farmer of the Year award is testimony to the quality of

the sheep and the high standard of management on the farm.” In addition to giving visitors the opportunity of a farm tour to view Mr Scott’s flock of commercial sheep, pedigree flocks of Texel, Beltex and New Zealand Suffolks and the recent addition of Aberfield hybrids, the one day event will include trade stands, educational exhibits, practical demonstrations, competitions, seminars and a focus on grassland management. Mr Scott farms Fearn with his wife Fiona, and parents James and Janet, and also has extensive grazings in Sutherland. Mr Scott is a board member of Quality Meat Scotland and chairs the Scottish sheep industry group. He is also a former Vice Chairman of NFU Scotland’s livestock committee. “I’m pleased to work with NSA Scotland in hosting this event which I hope will sharpen the focus of sheep

farmers and help us all take advantage of the opportunities open to the sheep industry in Scotland,” said Mr Scott. Fearn Farm also carries a herd of 110 suckler cows, including 60 pedigree Beef Shorthorns, and a small herd of Luing cattle is maintained on the Sutherland block. The arable enterprise includes 350 acres spring barley for malting, 80 acres winter barley for feeding and 80 acres let out for potatoes. The Scott’s are one of five farming families in Scotland whose activities over the year are being followed by a BBC2 camera team for a 12programme series of ‘On The Farm’ next year. Sponsorship and trade enquiries will be welcomed by Event Organiser Euan Emslie on 01430 441870, 07718 908523 or euan@appliedremedies.co.uk

Livestock Event 2015 to host four national beef shows Four beef breeds will be staging major national fixtures at Livestock Event, the UK’s largest event within the sector, to be held at The NEC, Birmingham on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 July. British Blue and Charolais societies have each confirmed they will be holding their national shows, Aberdeen Angus will be staging its junior national show and the South Devon Herd Book Society will be launching its inaugural performance championship. A total of 210 stall places will be available in the Livestock Hall. In addition, the British Charolais Cattle Society will be staging it Young Breeders’ Stock Judging Competition. Returning for the third year, British Charolais Cattle Society’s David Benson commented: “The NEC offers a first class facility in a prime location and the support to exhibitors from the stewards is second to none. 18

This event is well supported by farmers. In fact at last year’s event there were more farmers around the judging ring and came to talk to breeders in the lines afterwards than any of the summer shows.” Livestock Event director, Matt Knight said: “We are delighted to see the return of three breed societies who have each committed to holding their showcase fixtures at Livestock Event whilst we welcome for the first time the South Devon Herd Book Society. “We have taken into account the responses to the 2014 Livestock Event’s visitor survey in which one third of the respondees indicated they would like to see more livestock by expanding the beef section with one new breed as well as consolidating our existing exhibiting societies who continue to provide very positive feedback. The Livestock Hall which already forms the hub of the event, will provide an opportunity for each show to continue to raise its breed profile and build success.”

Forage Aid Chooses JCB Fastrac for Fund Raising Drive

Livestock and arable farmers have driven in relays from Somerset to Shropshire to highlight and raise funds for Forage Aid, an initiative borne out of adversity to provide practical help to farming communities affected by extreme weather and other disruptive events. Drivers on the 220-mile route stopped off to collect donations on the way to the Energy Now Expo at Telford, where the JCB Fastrac 3230 Xtra and banner-festooned Bailey silage trailer were on display to attract further funds. “We were delighted to support this initiative by providing a Fastrac, which is the most capable tractor for a longdistance drive such as this,” said Edward Roach, Sales & Marketing Manager, JCB Agriculture. “The response of farmers outside the areas affected by floods last year and heavy snowfall in 2013 was testament to the spirit of mutual support that exists

in all farming communities. JCB loaned Fastracs and Loadall handlers to support the Forage Aid efforts during the floods crisis and we’re pleased to continue our support by making this contribution to the Forage Aid fund-raising effort.” The Fastrac first demonstrated its road-going credentials in the hands of one of the farmers worst-affected by the Somerset floods, James Winslade. He took on the initial driving stint from Sedgemoor Auction Centre, which became the hub for forage donations and distribution. He was followed by Somerset farm manager Graham Glasper, who worked at the centre for six weeks at the height of the floods unloading lorries and loading farm trailers, and Lincolnshire farmer Andrew Ward, who first organised forage supplies for snow-bound farms in 2013 Another at the wheel was Ed Ford, an arable grower who sparked straw

and forage donations from East Anglia with his tractor and trailer drive to Somerset from Essex; and members of Young Farmers Clubs from Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Somerset and Shropshire. With its dual circuit anti-lock brakes and unique suspension on both axles, the Fastrac can legally be driven on the road at up 65kph, which has a significant impact on journey times when hauling produce from field to farm or from farm to markets and processing facilities. With up to 270hp for road transport, the Fastrac has plenty of power to tackle hills and JCB’s own P-Tronic transmission with six manual or auto powershift steps makes it a delight to handle on the road or in the field. The Forage Aid drivers will also have appreciated the unique level of ride comfort that comes with the Fastrac’s all-round suspension – a feature that no other farm tractor can boast.

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL

N.P. Davies Agricultural Contractors

NP Davies was established by Nigel Davies in 1981 providing a quality and competitive service to farmers and landowners. Based on the borders of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire we can easily travel to other counties when required. A range of agricultural services are offered including, Forage Harvesting, Baling, Cultivation, Drilling, Manure Slurry Digestate and Compost Spreading, Machinery Hire and Contract and Share Farming. Haylage, Hay, Silage, Straw and Maize are available for sale all through the year. Second hand machinery is also purchased and refurbished during winter months, and maintenance work is carried out for local farmers. This service along with fabrications are growing year on year. Ensuring crops are planted and harvested with precision during the few days contractors are on-farm is 26

vital. The importance of the short period on each farm to ensure good quality forage for livestock has been the driving force for Shropshirebased forage contractor Nigel Davies and his team. “Our aim has always been to complete the job to a very high standard whilst remaining competitive, rather than to be the cheapest operation”. A perfect operation is key to farmer’s profits, because a rushed job will mean forage quality suffers, resulting in a lower palatable feed. Mr Davies runs NP Davies Agricultural Contractors who are National Association Agricultural Contractors members with wife Julie and a dedicated team of full and regular part-time staff. Mrs Davies is largely responsible for keeping the company’s administration up to date as well as doing essential runs for consumables. Son Andrew, having studied Agricultural

Engineering at Harper Adams as well as undertaking contracting work in New Zealand and the US, now works for Agco. Daughter Samantha studied Land Management at Harper Adams, and is now working for Smiths Gore having recently achieved MRICS. Both still drive for the business. Muck spreading and ground preparations for spring crops start the years’ work load. “From April we drill maize with a precision drill capable of placing micro and bulk fertiliser with the seed. We gained a lot experience sowing sugar beet with a precision planter across the region for 20 years. Maize requires a good level seedbed, the seed depth and seed spacing in the rows are also critical. I started with a small acreage of maize against a much larger acreage of sugar beet which was a huge slice of our annual work, but the closure of the local beet factory in 2007 means maize has

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL become the main crop”. This main focus on forage production means that Mr Davies has been able to make investments into this area to improve the service on offer. “Critical factors are chop length at harvest, dry matter, grain shatter and ensiling technique. I still actively drive with my staff and it is not uncommon to have a farm’s nutritionist, seed supplier or a machinery manufacturer on site looking at the quality of forage going off the field and into the clamp thanks to the good reputation we have gained”. N P Davies use high capacity triple mowers powered by high horse power reverse drive tractors. Grass can be turned by 10 rotor models depending on the dry matter required by the customer. Grass is raked with twin and quad rotor rakes depending on ground conditions and density of crop and by precision chopping, the grass can be compacted more efficiently creating a highly palatable feed. Wholecrop is a starch based, high dry matter and energy feed and can be fed to a range of animals. N P Davies use a direct cut header to forage all wholecrop, this is to ensure no contamination or loss of grain. A wholecrop processor is used with specialist wholecrop rollers which run at fine tolerances to make sure all grain is split. This is key to making a quality feed and cannot be compared to foraging without a crop processor. N P Davies specialises in maize foraging, key areas during the professional service include harvesting at the right dry matter, achieving a correct chop length, cracking the grain and last but not least consolidating the clamp. This is an area that NP Davies strive to

set themselves apart from the competition. Whether a tractor or loading shovel is used, or in some cases both depending on quantity of product going into the clamp the clamp dictates the speed of the forager. N P Davies prides itself on offering every customer the best possible precision chopped forage. By having better quality silage, additional feed and concentrates could be reduced. The silage made in just a few days could feed cows for a usual six month winter or more. For maximum profitability within this time cow intakes need to be improved and this would only be possible with highly palatable feed. The Kernal processor used in the forager for maize and wholecrop was imported especially to achieve a superior grain shatter. A range of different additives can be applied within the forage harvesting process if required.

Many of the Claverley-based business’ customers have increased their acreages in response to improvements in varieties, forage quality and the move to larger, if fewer, dairy herds. Mr Davies also supplies grass and maize direct to dairy and beef farmers in the area. Being involved with the Maize

Growers Association and seed suppliers I’ve followed the technical updates to ensure we are on top of the job. Claas harvesters are used extensively, with Mr Davies researching various technological advances to help improve forage quality. The characteristics of harvested maize for AD are different to that of a forage. Mr Davies has visited many AD plants in the UK and on the continent, I see the AD market being a big player. I can see maize and rye grass being used in arable rotations, growing these break crops looks appealing and is a good alternative. Also moving with the times is the company’s haylage business. Producing haylage for the equine market is rapidly replacing hay says Mr Davies says. Haylage has much lower dust and a higher nutrient value. That removes the need for

owners to soak fodder before feeding and cuts the need for additional hard feeds. About 120 acres is grown annually which is stored and then dispatched in loads varying from 20 bales taken by individual horse owners through to artic loads for large livery and working yards.

FARMERS UK ADVERTORIAL

We are very keen to develop the haylage market. For the grower it takes out much of the risk in waiting for that window in summer to cut, dry and bale hay. In between the main maize and haylage contracting periods the company undertakes a range of arable and grassland duties. Baling services are centred around two sizes of baler the 3x3 bale measuring 80x90cm at up to 8 foot long and the “quadrant” size bale measuring 120x70cm at up to 8 foot long. The balers can bale straw, haylage, hay, silage and miscanthus. Balers are equipped with moisture meters. N P Davies prides themselves on good quality bales. Also wrapping can be done as a part job or part of the baling operation, from 4 to 8 layers can be supplied and applied by our wrappers depending on the choice of the customer. All bales can also be stacked and transported to the customer requirements. Ploughing is the main primary cultivation carried out by N P Davies, 5 and 6 furrow ploughs are used and these can be set up depending on previous and next crop type. Subsoiling and discing can be

done together or separately, with or without a packer roller depending on the requirements. For germination a double set of discs can be used, for subsoiling eight legs can be used over a 4 metre section, or for a complete tilth 4 to 8 legs can be used, two sets of discs and a packer. For secondary cultivation a range of power harrows can be used, a 6 metre hydraulic folding power harrow does the bulk of the work, with the ability to call on a 3 and 4 metre power harrow also. Manure, slurry and digestate spreading is an area of the business that is growing, as farmers look to focus on their cattle. High specification machines are used to make sure that spreading of manure is accurate. For chicken manure spreader plates can be used to ensure an accurate spread. Compost can also be supplied and spread. Tractor hire is available with operator and fuel with 100-300hp tractors, also manure spreaders are available with or without tractor and operator with the option of spreader plates. A 360 degree excavator is available for hire with or without

operator, the 13 tonne machine is a multi purpose machine which can be used for a range of tasks from ditching to digging and general groundworks. This particular excavator can be supplied with a range of buckets. Road building and amenity services are also areas of the business seeing an expansion, road building has become more popular from farmers looking to improve cattle welfare, or install new tracks for better access or just improving old tracks. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated team of staff that include a number of local farmers’ sons who join us year-on-year for busy periods. That is important for customers as the drivers are the face of the company when going in and out of farms during forage harvesting and clamping. The fact we run a fleet of Fendts encourages drivers to continue working for us as they like the reliability and comfort. And from my point of view, Fendts are also economical and have very strong resale values. Mr Davies’ experience and investment in maize grain processing technology will enable customers to benefit. Other added value benefits for the customer include trailers running on low ground pressure tyres and high capacity and efficient machinery. Year-round demand for a quality product produced during a few days of intensive, efficient and accurate work by the NP Davies’ team will once again pay dividend.

Farmers reaping the benefits of the sun Ground Mount verses Roof Mount – The Popularity of the Solar Panel As the Feed In Tariff rolls into its fourth year of operation, the interest in Renewable Energy seems to only be gaining momentum. With Solar PV systems making up 87% of the total number of energy installations in the United Kingdom (OFGEM Dec 2013), it would appear that people are reaping the benefits of the power from the Sun. The South West is the largest producers of Solar Energy, producing 4.36 MW in 2013 alone (OFGEM Dec 2013). Of course, there are obvious reasons why the South West is the most ideal location to install a Solar PV System, or even a solar farm with the most access to sunlight in the UK, however, there is nothing to prevent any business from seizing the rewards of a renewable energy system. Many people are often concerned about whether their land gets enough sunlight to warrant a Solar PV system, however, the panels only require daylight and not sunlight to generate power.

36

A common myth surrounding Solar PV is that the land or roof of a property must face due south. However, current installations show that a 13% annual return is still possible with installations that face East/West. Another discussion which occurs when discussing Solar PV generation is whether a Roof Mounted PV system or Ground Mounted system is better. The truth is that there are benefits of both types of system and one is not necessarily better than the other. A Ground Mounted PV system enables a farm or business to make the use of spare land that cannot be used for other purposes, generating money it would not ordinarily produce. Farmers with small livestock such as sheep or chickens can still let the animals use the field as the height of the system will not interfere their grazing. Ground Mounted PV systems also enable large scale installations to take place which are capable of powering large businesses whilst making money by exporting unused electricity back to the grid. Additionally, there will always be room for expansion with a Ground Mounted system as a business develops or as profit is made. Bowler Energy have installed 2.3MW of Ground Mounted solar panels since the company started in 2011. When this figure

is compared the 3.2MW of Roof Mounted Solar fitted in the same time, it would appear that Roof Mounted is a slightly more popular option. This is likely to be a result of the company initially marketing roof mounted panels to fit on the top of existing chicken sheds on our freerange farms, from there we have developed out business to provide other types of renewable energy system. Another reason for the popularity of the Roof Mounted PV system is that it does not take up any extra land. Therefore businesses based on large scale industrial sites can benefit from a PV system which will still generate enough energy to power but not take up any additional space. The Roof Mounted PV system can often fall within ‘permitted development’ meaning that no planning permission would be required to install a system 50kW or below as long as there is a 1m spacing between the panel and the edge of the roof. Solar PV Systems are consistently going to be the most popular option of Renewable Energy because they are the most accessible. The Roof Mount verses Ground Mount decision will always remain down to the client’s personal preference and location. But one thing many people who have a Solar PV system can be sure of it that the return on investment and the reduction in energy bills is enough to encourage anyone to take the first steps towards a Solar PV system of their own.

Ernest Fenton is an arable and sheep farmer in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He also runs an ice rink for curling and, in March 2012, had a 50kW roof-mounted solar PV system installed by Bowler Energy on a new, purpose built barn. As you can imagine, maintaining an ice rink requires a massive amount of electricity. For Ernest the deciding factors in pursuing a solar installation were the income from the feed-in tariffs and the ability to moderate his electricity costs for the next twenty years. The idea behind the purpose built barn was so that a roof-mounted system could be installed at the optimum angle to gain maximum output – and the barn itself provides a useful storage area. This could not have been gained from a groundmounted array and it helped to make the project more viable. Before awarding the contract to Bowler Energy, Ernest did his research and contacted other solar PV installers, but he says that some of them were not very good at responding to the difficult questions that he asked, whereas Bowler Energy’s Eddie Chadfield was always at the end of the phone with answers to his questions. Ernest knew Bowler Energy were a longestablished company and the quotation was competitive, so it seemed a good choice to go with them. Planning permission was required for the installation which Bowler Energy dealt with as part of the package. The installation itself was very speedy – in fact Ernest recalls the installation team were working against the clock to get the system installed and commissioned before

the tariff reduction came into effect, which they did. All in all, the entire process from initial contact to completed and commissioned PV system took five months. Ernest has been very pleased with his new PV system. It has lowered his reliance on electricity consumption from the grid, which is quite significant considering the amount of electricity required to maintain the ice rink. Ernest used to only open the ice rink during the winter months but since the installation of the PV array he has been able to extend the opening season to include spring and autumn. Previously the cost of keeping the ice cool would have made this financially prohibitive but now that Ernest has less reliance on bought-in electricity, he can afford to use his own electricity produced by his solar panels to move his business forward. “Electricity consumption is heading in the right direction,” says Ernest. “The feed-in tariff income has helped to support the farm, which has been a godsend during these last few months. We would be in a very different position now if it wasn’t for that”. Ernest now has a full twelve months of production data available and can see that only one month out of twelve the panels performed under target – for the other eleven months the panels were either on or above target. Says Ernest “I have a friend on the south coast who has an installation the same size as mine on one of his dairy buildings. We compare output readings and every

month so far mine has beaten his by at least 10% and sometimes as much as 15%!” As part of the package Ernest opted to have a solar logger fitted, which is a device offered by Bowler Energy on all its PV installations to enable the client to monitor the output of their panels. The solar logger even alerts the client if output falls below a certain level. This can be particularly useful in the event of a malfunction which could otherwise go unnoticed until the next quarterly meter reading was due, by which time the financial loss would be considerable. Ernest is also very happy with the back-up support received from Bowler Energy. To illustrate this he talks about a phone call he had from Bowler Energy about twelve months after the PV system was installed. “I received a parcel at the farm containing three brand new inverters. Eddie explained that Bowler Energy had experienced some problems on arrays with these particular inverters fitted. The supplier admitted they had a faulty batch and Bowler Energy negotiated to have all inverters which could potentially be affected replaced at no cost to the client. This is forward thinking and I am pleased that Bowler Energy has provided me with this level of service as you don’t know there is a problem with an inverter until it is too late. Therefore they have taken the necessary steps to prevent this happening on my site.”

FARMERS UK NEWS

Tensions in the potato supplyrgrowth chain follow two years of over production “Two seasons of over supply are causing great pain for our potato growers,” states Potato Council chair Fiona Fell. Difficult times Twelve months ago Potato Council’s ‘Market Dynamics Report’ highlighted that 2013 year-on-year retail volume sales had fallen by 8 per cent (the equivalent of 133,000 fewer tonnes). However, in 2014, just over 121,000 hectares were planted in again in Great Britain, a figure very similar to the year before. “A favourable growing season in 2014 resulted in a 5.7m tonne crop, which was 3 per cent up on the previous season,” adds Mrs Fell. “By November the estimated GB stock position was the equivalent to 2 boxes per hectare (200,000 tonnes) higher than a year before.” Great Britain can no longer utilise this level of production. “The industry has been successful in reducing supply chain waste and coupled with a drop in fresh potato consumption; this results in a new base level for production, well below what we have been used to.” Our high stocks have been placed under further pressure by a NorthWest European crop of 28m tonnes, which is 4m above the five year average. “The result is extremely uncomfortable and very challenging for our grower base,” adds Mrs Fell. Ex-farm free-buy prices, both at home and abroad, have been weak reflecting the supply situation. The

42

Fiona Fell

GB weekly free-buy price fell to a new season low w/e 16 Jan, hitting £77.43/t compared to £152.09/t at the same point last season. This is the lowest it has reached since Autumn 2009, and the lowest for the time of year since the 2002/03 season. Volatility is set to continue across agriculture and contracts are an important means of managing risk. “It’s paramount that growers work to build strong relationships with their buyers, based on trust and transparency,” notes Mrs Fell. “Although there’s been some progress with shorter chains and longer terms, contracts only work when terms are honoured by both parties. “We encourage growers who have not had contracts honoured this season to contact their farming union (NFU, NFU Scotland , NFU Cymru) for advice and legal assistance with handling disputes. “

Consumption Changes in consumption have affected all developed nations. France, Germany and Spain have all publically reported declines in fresh consumption this year. GB retail consumption volumes have begun to stabilise, with total fresh retail volumes rising 2 per cent (year-on-year comparison of latest quarter to 4 Jan) but are still down 2 per cent for the 52 weeks compared with the previous year. “Arresting fresh decline requires creative and concerted efforts from all parts of the supply chain from plant breeders, through primary producers and their supply chains and associated retailers,” says Mrs Fell “Our latest collaboration is with ‘Britain’s greatest ever gymnast’ Beth Tweddle MBE. “The famous Olympian, known for her many medal success has teamed up with Potato Council to support our ‘Cook Your Own Potatoes’ project, which aims to communicate the health benefits of potatoes to children and encourage them to cook healthy balanced meals featuring potatoes which play a key part of her intense training regime.”

2015/16 season As we head into the 2015/16 season Mrs Fell states, ““Grow what you are being asked to grow by the market. Grow what you know you can sell.”

Triple Auger Feeder Wagons for large scale dairy farms

Kuhn Farm Machinery’s full range of high capacity mixer wagons is now available in the UK. Featuring hopper capacities ranging from 28m3 to 45m3, the Euromix I – 70 Series machines are capable of feeding up to 360 high yielding dairy cattle in a single load, making them ideally suited to the growing number of large-scale dairy operations. The Euromix I – 70 Series features four models of mixer wagon, all of which are fitted with three vertical augers, with seven mixing knives per auger. The tandem axle 2870 and 3370 models have a capacity of 28m3 and 33m3 respectively and are capable of feeding up to 225 or 260 cows in a single load. The steering triple axle 3970 and 4570 machines have respective capacities of 39m3 and 45m3 and are capable of feeding up to 310 and 360 cows in a single load. Each machine measures just 2.44

46

metres in width making them suitable for use within most cow housing facilities: the 2870 has an overall height of 2.74 metres and is designed for use in sheds with restricted height access, while the largest 4570 machine still sits at a relatively low height of 3.45 metres. The 3370 and 3970 both have a maximum height of 3.00 metres. “The high capacity of the 70 Series machines means that a large quantity of fibrous feed – up to six whole round bales – can be chopped and mixed in one load,” explains Duncan McLeish, UK Sales Manager for Kuhn. “In common with Kuhn’s single and double auger machines, each auger also features a double pitch profile at the end of the auger and a second scraper at the base to quickly break up and expand whole bales. The contents of the hopper are then mixed throughout the machine’s entire storage volume, thereby

allowing large herds to be fed quickly, efficiently and consistently, with no loss or variation in nutritional quality.” The hoppers on all four machines are constructed from extra thick steel for intensive use over an extended period, and are equipped with a weighing system comprising six loads cells mounted between the hopper and integral frame. The 2870 and 3370 machines are fitted with a double speed gearbox (14 and 30 rpm), while the 3970 and 4570 models use a heavy-duty double speed gearbox (18 and 39 rpm). All four models can be configured with right or left discharge chutes at the front or rear of the machine, with a central rear chute option also available. Prices for the 2870 start from £75,732 and from £100,475 for the 4570 machine. For further information go to www.kuhn.co.uk

Young Farmers from Wiltshire are putting their entrepreneurship skills to the test Two sisters and Young Farmers from Wiltshire are putting their entrepreneurship skills to the test by setting up their own business. For 50 years, the Padfield family have been pig farmers in the Wiltshire village of Seend, supplying pork products to restaurants and pubs throughout the county and beyond. Now, Sammy and Becky Padfield, of Devizes YFC, have helped the family business and set up their own farm shop – The Pantry. Based in Marlborough, and still providing the same top quality meat, the Pantry will be a natural extension to the family business and one which enables the family to continue the business into the third generation. In addition to being a shop, the Pantry will also provide a takeaway service. A full carvery service will also be available, with dining facilities in the shop and upstairs. Customers will choose, order and then be served at their table. There are plans to offer private dining to companies who wish to entertain clients, as well as hog roasts at The Pantry or out on site as a catering service.

The conversion of the premises is in full swing, with the shop and dining areas to be finished in the next two weeks. If any YFC member wants to follow in the footsteps of the Padfield sisters and try and start their own business, NFYFC can help. Thanks to support from Defra, the Federation has teamed up with Natwest to provide a Business Start Up Training Session in Matlock, Derbyshire on 23rd March. The session is free to all YFC members.

BVA makes big demands on animal welfare and disease prevention

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has challenged the next government to commit to taking action on animal welfare and disease prevention, including making sure the UK is ready and able to cope with the next emerging disease threat, when it arrives. BVA president, John Blackwell, speaking to an audience of parliamentarians, animal welfare groups, farming and veterinary leaders in London, set out the organisation’s 2015 General Election manifesto, giving all political parties a five-point animal welfare and disease prevention plan to consider. This included BVA’s challenge to: • Listen to the growing public concern over welfare at slaughter,

indicated by over 100,000 signatures to BVA’s online petition, and pledge that an end to non-stun slaughter will be fully debated by parliament at the earliest opportunity. • Ensure the veterinary surveillance system of animal disease detection and prevention in the UK is robust enough “to spot the next emerging threat, the next BSE”. • Lobby in Europe to protect vets’ ability to responsibly prescribe and dispense veterinary medicines. • Overhaul legislation on the sale of pets to ensure best practice in the production and sale of companion animals. • Embrace partnership working between government and the veterinary profession, recognising the unique skills, knowledge and expertise of veterinary surgeons across animal health and welfare and public health. “This week’s news about avian influenza in Hampshire highlights

exactly why the expertise of vets matters in fighting disease and protecting human and animal health,” added Mr Blackwell. “In Hampshire, it was a local vet who sampled for avian influenza when it became clear that the disease could not be ruled out of a diagnosis. Such vigilance and expert knowledge matters in a global world, where disease can be both pandemic and zoonotic.” He also warned that whichever party or parties form the next government it would be a “false and dangerous economy” to strip away a system of surveillance where local expertise is essential for a robust system of reporting and data collection. “Vets are the guardians of animal welfare and we will continue to stand up for the highest standards of welfare for all animals,” he said.

The partnership, which continues Cogent’s long-standing commitment to supply British genetics to Australia, will give farmers access to world-leading sires across a diverse range of breeds, in both sexed and conventional semen. Alltech strengthens its on-farm presence and agrienvironment credentials with the purchase of The E-CO2 Project Limited STAMFORD, UK – Global animal nutrition leader Alltech has acquired The E-CO2 Project Limited (E-CO2) – a leading provider of on-farm environmental assessments and programmes – to strengthen its service offering to livestock producers. The purchase builds on the recent close business partnership forged between the two companies to help farmers make their operations more efficient, profitable and sustainable. “Carbon and water efficiency are a growing issue within both the food chain and everyday life,” said Dr. Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech. “The acquisition of E-CO2 underscores Alltech’s long-term commitment to strong, sustainable global agriculture, as well as to food quality and safety for an expanding population.” For more than 17 years – initially through CMS UK Services Ltd – ECO2 has developed its portfolio of environmental software and services in response to the need to further understand greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture and the food chain. Its clients range from small family farms to integrated 54

livestock operations and commercial feed mills, as well as large retailers and processors increasingly under pressure to reduce their environmental footprint and meet government and corporate sustainability targets. Commenting on the sale, E-CO2 managing director and co-founder Peter Darlington said Alltech was the perfect partner to take the business forward. “Alltech believes that the future of agriculture depends on solutions that are beneficial to the animal, consumer and environment. And so do we; the E-CO2 team believes passionately that reducing the environmental impact of agriculture involves simultaneously delivering value to the farmer,” he said. Recent environmental assessment work conducted by Alltech on 58 dairy units across Europe has shown just how much farm efficiency improvements can boost profitability, whilst also reducing the carbon footprint of the enterprise at the same time. In the study, carried out utilising E-CO2 environmental tools, various herd efficiency improvements delivered an extra £204 per cow per year, yet there was a significant drop in the level of CO2

emitted. Based in Crewe in the UK, E-CO2 will now move forward as Alltech ECO2. Alltech E-CO2 assessments will continue to determine the environmental impact of a farm as a holistic measure of overall efficiency. Assessments will be directly linked to physical and financial performance, where custom feeding regimes and management practices can be developed to improve farm efficiency and profitability, sustainably. The acquisition gives Alltech a greater presence on-farm and will foster improved links with state institutions, processors and retailers. Alltech E-CO2 will benefit from access to Alltech’s global operations in 128 countries and its extensive team of scientists, nutritionists and marketing experts. Alltech has three major bioscience centres, complemented by 19 formal research alliances with leading universities and institutions around the world from the United States to China. Alltech E-CO2 will also make its wide and innovative range of products and services available to all of Alltech’s global offices.

Cogent brings muscle and milk to the hereford line

Romany 1 Lawbreaker, a breedleading Hereford, has joined Cogent’s Signature Beef line-up. Lawbreaker brings together an almost unparalleled combination of genetic potential with unique physical and statistical performance. He ranks in the top 5% of the breed for 200, 400 and 600 days and with an eye muscle area of +3.5, Lawbreaker will be the bull to suit all markets. This exciting new bull also offers great maternal strengths with a self replacing index of +41 and a terminal index in the top 5% of the breed. Added to this is a family reputation for success in the show ring. His sire, Spurstow Recruit 1st, is a consistent producer of progeny with quality carcass traits and has

already delivered show and sale champions with one of his first daughters winning the National Poll Show in 2014. Cogent’s Beef Sire Analyst, Boomer Birch said: “We are delighted to continue bringing such high calibre bloodlines to the Cogent Signature Beef portfolio. Lawbreaker is a breath of fresh air, full of breed character with great muscle and growth. His exceptional structure is complemented by breed leading EBV’s and he will be perfect for use in any sector of the beef production industry. He offers some of the best breed-leading genetics to both commercial and pedigree producers and is a bull that will certainly stand out from the crowd. We can expect this bull to break all the rules by transmitting muscle with

milk to his progeny.” Robert Wilson from Romany Poll Herefords, and Lawbreaker’s breeder, said: “Lawbreaker was always a stand-out calf among his peers, full of breed character and exhibiting all the traits needed in a modern Hereford bull. We are delighted producers will have the chance to use him. On seeing his sire's carcass as a young calf, we had to have him and this was before we even knew about his unique pedigree or excellent performance data. We feel Lawbreaker exhibits similar virtues in his performance, length, muscle and balance. His dam is also from one of our best and oldest female lines within the herd. Whatever avenue of beef production he is being considered for, he should tick all the boxes.”

No time for monkey business as engineers hear about new McCormick developments McCormick developments unveiled to dealers at Yorkshire Wildlife Park Presented with new tractor designs for arable and livestock farmers Computer and satellite control technology appreciated by young drivers Agricultural engineers supplying new McCormick tractors travelled from all parts of Britain to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster, Yorkshire to hear about and try for themselves – the new models and improved features being introduced this year. There was no time for any monkey business or feeding the lions as the dealers got down to the nitty - gritty of learning about new ‘X generation tractors for livestock and arable farms, and features such

94

as touch-screen computer control of the tractor and implements, an automatic transmission with no gear shifting, and satellite navigation that can guide a tractor across fields with 2cm accuracy. “It was very important to us that our dealers had an opportunity get some detail on the new tractors and to drive them,” says Ray Spinks, sales director and general manager at McCormick distributor AgriArgo UK. “We had dealers from as far away as Scotland and South-West England learn ing about the new developments to pass on the information and their impressions to customers.” McCormick manufacturer Argo Tractors has invested heavily in a new product development programme that will produce as many as eight new ranges over

three years, bringing added refinements, greater performance and modern control technologies to the tractors that farmers rely on day after day. New small tractors for livestock farmers – the 64-107hp McCormick X4 Series and 85-113hp McCormick X5 Series – have new, more economical engines and a smart new cab with large windows for good all-round visibility. The mid-range McCormick X6 Series (111-176hp) covers a wide range of transmission, pto and equipment choices to suit different applications an d operator preferences. At the top of the range, the McCormick X7 Series (143 - 188hp) for arable farmers, contractors and large grassland/livestock producers can have a 12in touch - screen

ISOBUS terminal to set up and control various functions on the tractor and implements. The new VT Drive version is the first McCormick with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Instead of shifting gears manually, the operator only has to use the accelerator pedal or the EasyPilot control joystick – computer control automatically selects the best engine speed and transmission ratio for efficient road travel and different types of field work. “This is the sort of technology that brings added performance, fuel economy and precision to farming operations,” says Ray Spinks. “It’s especially appreciated by a younger generation of farmers who use computers of one type or another in all aspects of their lives

Bauer irrigation diesel pumps feature at LAMMA

A mobile irrigation pump set being exhibited by Bauer at the LAMMA show is one of a range of units performance-matched to the Rainstar and ProRain reel irrigators, and the linear and pivot irrigation systems produced by the company. There are six models in all, with a choice of Caprari or Rovatti pumps on all but the smallest model, and diesel engines from FPT Industrial or Deere Power Systems. Model numbers – from DP70 to the DP300 – give an indication of maximum water pumping performance in cubic metres per hour. “These simple, reliable pump sets are available from our dealers to provide an integrated system of irrigation for field vegetable, potato 96

and other crops,” notes Adrian Tindall, sales manager for the UK and Ireland. “They come with selfpriming pumps protected by auto shut-off to guard against damage, four adjustable stands for stability in work, and a lockable fuel cap and removable drawbar for security.” A fuel tank incorporated into the frame keeps things simple and, similarly, standard bodywork is limited to wire mesh screens all round beneath a metal roof to protect components from rain. Alternatively, a soundproof hood is available for units working in noisesensitive locations. Each of the units has Bauer’s Elcos 250 control unit, which provides a timer, flow switch connector and a locking engine start, plus shut-down

protection in the event of the engine overheating, low oil pressure, wayward pump pressure or interruption to the water flow. The FPT ‘NEF’ and Deere engine families were selected for their power and torque profile, good fuel economy and renowned reliability. FPT four-cylinder engines cover the 50-100hp models, with 6.7-litre sixcylinder versions providing 163hp and 175hp for the higher capacity pumps. Four-cylinder Deere engines of 48hp and 78hp provide an alternative for the first two pump sets in the range, thereafter switching to six-cylinder units of 120hp and 166hp.

John Deere Gator marks 200,000th CESAR milestone

John Deere Limited marketing manager Chris Wiltshire (left) and Datatag sales manager Chris Harrison with the CESAR marked Gator at LAMMA 2015.

All new John Deere Gator utility vehicles can now be equipped with the nationally approved CESAR security and registration system from Datatag ID Limited, as a factory fit option. An XUV 855D model was unveiled on the CESAR stand at LAMMA 2015 in January as the scheme’s 200,000th registered machine. The system is now being offered on Gators following its success in reducing tractor thefts from dealers and customers, and has exactly the same functionality as on the John Deere tractor range. Supported by the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) and the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), CESAR is fitted on production lines in the UK, Europe and the USA by many leading manufacturers. The system was established in the

construction market in 2007 and adopted by the agricultural market two years later, with the AEA’s support. It works by giving each piece of equipment a unique and permanent identity using state of the art Datatag security marking technology. This cannot be removed by thieves, and is linked to a secure, 24/7 dedicated call centre. Since 2007, CESAR has reduced overall equipment theft in the UK by 46 per cent, increased the rate of recovery of stolen equipment by a factor of six, and also helped reduce insurance premiums. “I’m extremely proud that CESAR has reached another significant milestone,” said Datatag ID managing director Kevin Howells at LAMMA. "When we launched CESAR back in 2007 we could not have

conceived of its success in being adopted by leading manufacturers and in reducing theft. I’m also extremely pleased that John Deere has decided to expand its support of CESAR and introduce it as an optional factory fit for its utility vehicle range. I have every confidence that this will be as successful for Gators as it has been for John Deere tractors.” Newly appointed director general and CEO of the AEA Ruth Bailey added: “The AEA continues to fully support CESAR, and our members who fit the system, in combating opportunistic and professional thieves who prey on British farmers and other machinery users. It has proved to be an extremely effective deterrent against theft and an invaluable aid in the recovery of stolen vehicles.”

Suzuki ATV targets rural crime by fitting CESAR as standard

Suzuki GB has announced that its range of utility ATVs will now come fitted with CESAR – security electronic an system identification developed by leading security specialist, Datatag. Launching the initiative at LAMMA, the UK’s biggest agricultural show, Suzuki is leading the way in protecting its customers from ATV theft – one of the top three rural crimes – as the system is designed to act as both a deterrent against theft and as a powerful way to recover in the event of a theft. The CESAR system, the official security initiative of the Equipment Construction Association (CEA) and the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA), is powered by technology from leading security specialists,

102

Datatag, and figures released by the police show an unmarked machine is four times more likely to be stolen. Using Datatag’s state of the art technologies identification including tamper evident warning transponders, RFiD labels, Datadots® and forensic DNA, an ATV’s true identity cannot be erased thus making it unattractive to potential thieves. class-leading Datatag’s technology, backed up by a 24/7 call centre, has been praised by the police for its success in reducing theft not only in agriculture but also cycle, motorcycle and power tool markets. George Cheeseman, Sales and Marketing Manager – Suzuki ATV and Marine, explains, “At Suzuki we take customer service seriously

and, just as we have in the Marine sector, we are proud to be the first brand to fit Datatag technology as standard to our range of ATVs in order to protect our customers – and what's more, the only ATV brand to offer this. Rural crime costs far more than just the cost of the equipment stolen and we are confident that this decision will have far-reaching benefits for owners of new Suzuki ATVs.” Chris Harrison, Sales Director of Datatag, adds, “Our technology within the CESAR system has proved itself time and time again in the construction and agriculture markets and this forward-thinking, proactive step by Suzuki will have a significant impact, reducing theft of their ATVs and thereby protecting their customers.”

FARMERS UK NEWS AND ADVERTORIAL

New JCB Diesel Generators provide reliable off-grid or back-up power for farming enterprises A more efficient range of diesel generators with a number of improved features has been launched into the farm equipment market by JCB Agriculture. The JCB ‘QS’ range of diesel engine powered generators with prime outputs from 20 to 220kVA can provide electrical power to grain stores and driers for seasonal use where no mains electricity is available, and to livestock buildings and horticultural facilities as back-up power in the event of mains supply failure. “A reliable power source is essential for the efficient running of all farm enterprises, and JCB generators are designed above all for reliability,” says Edward Roach, Product Marketing Manager, JCB Agriculture. “Whether providing power in locations where installing a mains supply is prohibitively expensive or where emergency backup power is essential – such as for pig and poultry housing – the new JCB ‘QS’ range has the solution.” Refinements introduced with the new range include three-stage fuel filtration to ensure the engines run reliably, and a one-piece roof structure to better guard against water ingress when the generator is located outdoors. Bigger slam-shut steel panel doors provide easier access for periodical checks and servicing. Alternators from leading specialist

manufacturer Mecc Alte and the use of other premium-quality components for key items such as circuit breakers and the control panel contribute to reliable long-term service. Using proven JCB engines for the new generators is another key attraction because of their record for reliability and fuel economy – and

their familiarity to JCB agricultural equipment dealers for optimum servicing and maintenance. The 20-45kVA models in the JCB ‘QS’ range are powered by the new JCB Diesel by Kohler engine, developed in partnership and powering JCB’s latest 408/409 rigid arm and 180/220 telescopic mini wheeled loaders. The compact canopy and small footprint of the generators in this power range minimises installation space and reduces transport costs. Four-cylinder JCB Dieselmax engines are used for the 60-140kVA versions, delivering fuel-efficient power generation that mirrors their track record in JCB Agri wheeled loaders, Loadall telescopic handlers

and TeleMaster telescopic loaders. The quiet running characteristics of this engine and an attenuated canopy result in lower noise levels – down to just 64dBA at 7m – than from competitor and previous JCB gensets, making them ideal for noisesensitive locations. Top-of-the range ‘QS’ generators with 160-220kVA prime outputs are powered by the new six-cylinder JCB Dieselmax 672 engine, which typically delivers a 7% fuel saving over previous JCB generators using a different power unit, and as much as 8% less than equivalent models from other manufacturers. Classleading electrical power outputs in an ergonomically-designed, narrow-width unit also characterise these competitive generators. Common features across the new JCB ‘QS’ range include heavy-duty tie-down points, lifting hooks and optional fork pockets; a fuel tank sized to match the engine that can be partially or fully removed to make cleaning out easier; and a canopy and base that is phosphate dipped then powder paint coated for maximum corrosion resistance. Options enabling users to meet particular needs include a 110% bunded base to contain fuel leaks or filling spillages; an engine block heater for reliable starting in very cold conditions; earth leakage protection; and a battery charger.

New orchard shredder makes light work of tree pruning

Kuhn Farm Machinery has announced the launch of a new shredder to the UK fruit growing market. . Designed specifically to operate between rows of fruit trees, the TRP 175 PRO is capable of shredding high volumes of leaf residue and thick, woody branches at high speed. It can also be used for light path clearing and verge shredding, making it a truly versatile piece of landscape maintenance equipment. The TRP 175 PRO has a 175cm working width and features a large volume casing for maximum output. It is fitted with a hydraulically driven, adjustable speed pick-up rotor, and is fitted with two high strength Domex steel rear grids with 60mm outlet holes for very fine shredding: the upper grid is hinge-mounted for easy access to the rotor.

The new shredder is fitted with a 457mm diameter flail rotor, equipped with 1.65kg heavy hammer knives which are mounted onto toothed knife holders with robust 25mm pins. Capable of operating at up to 3,100 revolutions per minute, the knives and toothed holders, which are arranged in a helical pattern, hold debris within the body of the flail until all material has been broken down into fine fragments. The TRP 175 PRO uses a central gearbox and a reversible head allowing the machine to be front or rear mounted. It can also be used with reverse drive-station tractors. As standard, the front hood is fixed, with a hydraulically adjustable roller available as an option – this enables the machine to be fine tuned according to the volume of debris to

be shredded. “The TRP 175 PRO is the ideal machine for fruit farmers looking to shred high volumes of branch and leaf residue,” explains JeanSebastien Vecten of Kuhn Farm Machinery. “It is capable of shredding large amounts of woody material into a very fine pulp and is robust enough to cope with the most challenging conditions. A strong frame, tough gearbox and thick chamber lining make the new machine capable of withstanding heavy stone impacts and give the TRP a long working life.”
