This rural home and studio served as a profound source of inspiration, what started off as a modest farmhouse grew to a 72-acre estate and became the epicentre of his global art presence.

The Henry Moore Institute welcomes everyone to visit their Galleries, Research Library and Archive to experience, study and enjoy sculpture

from around the world. The Institute can be found in the centre of Leeds, the city where Henry Moore (1898-1986) began his training as a sculptor. Their changing programme of historical, modern and contemporary exhibitions and events encourage thinking about what sculpture is, how it is made and the artists who make it.

A SNEAK PREVIEW OF THE CLASSIC IBIZA SET LIST

With Classic Ibiza at Hatfield House on Saturday 19 August rapidly approaching, over Easter the show’s 40,000 social media followers had the opportunity to vote for the tracks they most wanted to hear performed live by the 32-piece Urban Soul Orchestra (USO). The five most popular tracks are being added to an orchestral set of over 30 house classics this summer, including 10 other new orchestrations and some firm Classic Ibiza favourites. USO, who headline the show, have worked alongside dance music greats, including Groove Armada, Robert Miles and Nightmares on Wax.

With over 5,000 votes now counted, the five winning tracks, which were selected from a shortlist of 10, are: Silence (Delerium, Tiësto, Sarah McLachlan), King of My Castle (Wamdue Project, Roy Malone), Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) (C & C Music Factory), On a Ragga Tip (SL2) and Need You (100%) (Duke Dumont, A*M*E).

Lisa Ward, Classic Ibiza’s promoter, says: “We’ve all been to concerts before hoping to hear our favourite track, only to leave slightly disappointed when it’s not played. Our annual track poll, which is always hugely popular, gives our incredible Hatfield House audience the opportunity to do something about that. All I can say is that it’s a

good thing they’ve got taste!”

So, what about the 10 other new tracks making their Classic Ibiza debut this year?

Stephen Hussey, USO’s founder and Classic Ibiza’s conductor, arranger and musical producer, says: “Without giving away too much, one of the new tracks this year is the house version of Yeke Yeke by Mory Kante – a definite standout tune for me. We had help learning and understanding the lyrics from Lucy Duran, professor of music at the School of Oriental and African Studies. I feel great affinity with the three worlds of music represented in our version – African, house and orchestral. I guess it encapsulates three very important things to me – my heritage, my education and my party side!”

Gates open at Hatfield House at 5pm, with the show starting with a Chill-Out DJ Set.

Former Pacha Ibiza resident, DJ Jose Luis then takes control of the decks for his Latin House Set, which includes a live jamming session with members of USO. Next up, USO and DJ Goldierocks take centre stage for the Sundowner Set, followed by Goldierocks’ Deep House DJ Set. The show then reaches a rapturous crescendo at 10.30pm, following USO’s return to the stage for

the Dance Set, accompanied by an amazing laser & light show.

Lisa Ward says: “We’re blessed with a loyal audience who love to come to Classic Ibiza every year. Our challenge is to always serve up something fresh to keep them coming back. The tracks we play are obviously a major part of that. Having already heard some of the new orchestrations, I know our Hatfield House audience are going to love what we have in store for them this summer. We’ve also once again upped the ante on the show’s visuals – it’s going to be awesome.”

Demand for tickets to Classic Ibiza’s summer tour are once again high, with some venues already

sold-out.

Stephen Hussey adds: “Hatfield is always an extra-special show for us as it marks the end of our summer tour, so as an orchestra we’re totally on our A-game. With the 15 new tracks we’ve added to the set, in my opinion it’s going to be our best show yet. Buckle up and enjoy the ride Hatfield!”

Classic Ibiza at is proud to be supporting Hatfield-based charity, Herts Young Homeless. There will be various fundraising initiatives taking place on the evening, including a £2.50 donation from every programme sold.

Westminster Security

Personal security is a tax-deductible expense employment, there is no necessity for any direct or impending danger. And the expenditure must be in connection with the use or provision of an asset or service which improves personal security.

CEOs, Directors, and other business executives could invest in a wide range of personal security services and assets, such as close protection, security chauffeurs, residential security guards, security doors and windows, and even a secure panic room if required.

Most company owners and directors are unaware that security expenses are tax-deductible for businesses.

While some companies see security as an unnecessary expense, it is essential to protect assets and employees. Investing in security can increase productivity, prevent theft, and protect owners and employees in the event of a robbery or targeted attack. Not only is security a wise investment, but it can also reduce tax liability.

This little-known fact is not widely discussed or published online. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) allows companies to offset their security expenses on services and assets that improve property and personal security against their corporation tax liability. However, some requirements must be met to be eligible for a tax deduction.

The perceived threat and risks must be established from the particular trade or

Similarly, a company could invest in office or retail store security, such as CCTV and alarms, security guards, security shutters, etc. even bodyguards for employees in the event of a special threat. Sole traders or limited company directors working from a home-based office could also invest in tax-deductible services and assets to protect themselves from potential threats.

The interpretation of “special threat” is not necessarily prescriptive and introduces a grey area open to interpretation. Therefore, documenting the reasoning for the allowance is essential in case of a subsequent dispute. Businesses can benefit from increased security, improved morale, retention and reputation, productivity, and profits, whilst saving tax by investing in security.

The Case for GOLD COINS

Gold has been a valuable commodity for thousands of years. For Rosland customers, there are many reasons why they continue to put their trust in gold. One of the best ways to build a gold collection is by purchasing gold coins, which offer a range of advantages over other forms of portfolio diversification.

COINS V’S BARS

Coins offer some distinct advantages over bars. They are typically easier to sell due to their smaller size and standardised denominations. They also come with an added level of security, as each coin is individually minted and marked with its denomination and year of issue.

VAT & CGT FREE

Gold coins of a certain purity have the unique advantage of being VAT free. Additionally, British legal tender coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax, meaning you can sell them or pass them on safe in the knowledge that you won’t have to pay a single penny in tax.

TIPS FOR BUYING COINS

If you’re interested in purchasing gold coins, here are Rosland’s top tips to help you make an informed decision...

1. Research, Research, Research

Before making any purchase, it’s important to

research the types of coins you are interested in buying. Consider the historical significance, the rarity, the minting year, and the condition of the coins. This will give you a better understanding of the potential value of the coins over time.

2. Buy from a Reputable Dealer

One of the most important things to keep in mind when purchasing gold coins is to buy from a reputable dealer. This ensures that you are getting authentic gold coins that are not counterfeit. Look for a dealer who is well-established and has a good reputation.

3. Buy Graded

When buying gold coins, it is important to consider buying graded coins. These coins are evaluated, authenticated, and graded by independent thirdparty grading services – at Rosland they use PCGS and NGC to grade all their coins.

4. Consider the Rarity

The rarity of the coins can have a significant impact on their value. The rarity of a coin can be determined by factors such as its mintage, its condition, and its historical significance.

5. Store Your Coins Securely

Finally, it is important to store your coins securely to protect your collection. Rosland offer all their clients the option of a storage solution – fully secure and insured all year round.

‘YOUR STORY, OUR DESIGN’

Everyone that visits a Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery design studio has their own special and individual story to tell. As bespoke specialists, we then have the upmost privilege of translating that story into a wonderful bespoke piece of jewel-lery.

So many couples have been kind enough to share their stories with us over the last 25 years, but a few recent commissions stand out for the special way that their sto-ries have been translated into one-off designs.

Keen hikers Rob and Natalia designed this incredible Fairtrade mixed gold and tril-liant cut diamond engagement and wedding ring set, mimicking a mountain range and the reflection of the mountains in the lake below. The rings are the epitome of bespoke design and were ready in time for a, very fitting, mountain top proposal!

Roxanne wanted a pendant that would celebrate life after ‘completing her little family’ with the birth of her son. We created a design that held a

beautiful array of gemstones, each representing the birthstone of a family member, all encompassed in the handmade, golden leaf of a tropical plant as a nod to her favourite pastime.

Lastly, Jonathan who surprised his wife, Kate with the gift of designing her very own bespoke eternity ring as part of her 40th birthday present. Kate had fallen in love with one of our previous commissions which we used as inspiration for her ring. We redesigned a selection of Kate’s own beloved jewellery collection to create the piece and inject a touch of sentimentality into the modern heirloom.

THE WONDERS OF HITCHIN LAVENDER

Lavender has been grown in and around Hitchin for hundreds of years and museum is homage to this. Perks and Llewellyn was an apothecary located in Hitchin town centre until the 1960’s, Hitchin Historical Society have kindly loaned us much of the shops furniture and its artefacts which help give visitors an insight into the use of lavender throughout Victorian times.

We have over 30 acres of lavender containing a wide range of varieties for you to explore. You’ll be able to wander wherever you like within the field and pick some lavender to take home with you. We’ll provide a paper bag for collecting lavender which can be picked up at the entrance to the field. We kindly request that you bring your own scissors to help support our additional safety measures currently in place due to COVID-19. We advise that the lavender should only be cut from the sides of the bushes, not from the top. Our main flowering season is between mid-June and late August. Amateur photography is welcomed!

We have many varieties of British wild flowers in our meadow including Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Poppy, Tufted Vetch, Cornflower and Field Forget-Me-Not. The meadow can be found towards the right hand side of our main field and will usually be in flower from early summer.

PLANTING & GROWING

Our top tips for growing lavender at home: Ideally, lavender prefers to be planted in a

porous soil, such as sand or chalk. Chalk is ideal as it is slightly alkaline and allows for rain water to permeate through.

Lavender can grow in a non-porous soil, such as clay, if sand or grit or something that allows drainage is mixed in.

Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long.

Lavender likes to be in a place that will get a lot of sun but so long as the plant is well aerated, it will still thrive.

When first planted, lavender needs help to become established in the ground and will need watering for the first seven to ten days or so. Once established, it won’t need any additional watering aside from incidental rainfall. If you’re planning to keep your lavender plant in a pot you will however, need to keep watering it occasionally. It doesn’t necessarily need any extra feed to help it become established.

There can be flexibility when it comes to harvesting your lavender stems. If you’re cutting

your plant for fresh flowers, you can cut them whenever you like. For dried lavender, they should ideally be picked just before the petals (corollas) open up.

When pruning, stems should be cut above the greenery, about two inches above the old wood. This will allow for new growth for next season. If the stem is cut too far down into the old wood, it can damage or even kill off a plant. Lavender will survive just as happily if pruned once the lavender heads have lost all their colour.

WHICH VARIETY TO PICK?

There are 39 species of lavender worldwide and within each species there are hundreds of varieties, meaning that there are many different colours, scents and foliage types to choose from.

We have 2 main species that are farmed at Hitchin Lavender. They are Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia, although you’ll be able to see 60 varieties growing in our display field and 10 varieties in our main field.

Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic. Its typical flowering period is from mid-June to late July. It is an extremely hardy plant and fairly forgiving of pruning mistakes! It has a shorter stem than other species and more contained greenery, making it a good option for domestic use.

Intermedia is a hybrid plant which comes from a combination of Angustifolia and Latifolia lavenders. Many varieties of Intermedia are used for producing commercial oil and dried bunches, as the yields from these plants are up to three times greater than Angustifolia. Intermedia is also very hardy with a flowering period from early July through to September.

If you’d like to pick a variety of lavender that can be found in our fields, you’ll find a selection of Angustifolia and Intermedia plants, available in two different pot sizes in our farm shop.

Dogs are welcome on-site so long as they are kept on a lead and any doggy deposits are cleared

away by their owners.

The lavender attracts a diverse mix of wildlife, in particular bees. You’ll be able to see many bees amongst the lavender rows. Much of the other wildlife may be harder to spot but the farm is home to hares, butterflies, insects, partridges, skylarks and more.

The tasting menu at 1890 by Gordon Ramsay at THE SAVOY

I’m sat on a stool at the American Bar in The Savoy Hotel, in awe of their head bartender, Chelsie Bailey. Rewriting the stereotype for who you might imagine has the most famous bar job in the world, Chelsie brings a fresh explosion of youth and coolness to the delectable drinking space.

Imparting a plethora of cocktail tips (drink a non-alcoholic beer on the side of your cocktails if you want to reduce your alcohol intake; never buy sugar syrup – it’s so easy to make, with a 1:1 ratio of sugar and boiling water, and stir) her enthusiasm is infectious. After discussing my favourite flavour profiles, she serves me an Old Cuban and I have to say, it’s the most delicious cocktail I’ve ever tasted.

Chelsie continues the history making at The Savoy, only the second female to hold the iconic role here since Ada ‘Coley’ Coleman in the early1900s, her knowledge fizzing about women in the industry.

The Savoy, of course, is renowned the world over. Its 267 rooms and suites offer up elegant Edwardian or art deco style, as well as a bed for the night.

The tasting menu at 1890 by Gordon Ramsay is up there with some of the best. Open only for dinner, t’s the tiniest restaurant I’ve ever eaten in, seating just 26 guests, and overlooks the glorious art deco entrance – ask for the table by the window and you can while away the evening people watching and spotting fancy cars.

Everything about the experience feels special, from my handbag being given its very own stool, to the first taste of Libertine – an English sparkling rosè that is only available to Gordon Ramsay, and the way you’re told what you’re eating

as they bring it to the table – there are no menus to peruse and ruin the surprise.

Geometric designs stand out on lit up wall tiles and the copper ceiling is mesmerising, as spirographic patterns twist and turn in the dark, atmospheric lighting.

Named 1890 – the year the legendary French chef Georges Auguste Escoffier joined The Savoy and began creating his culinary legacy, the nine courses delight the senses in every way.

As we tuck into a smoked Cheddar gougère, which disappears the second it enters my mouth, the following contemporary fine dining courses do not disappoint. The Jerusalem artichoke royale with crisp artichoke skin and black truffle arrives in the most beautiful golden egg, and the winter flavours in the bean cassoulet consommé are to die for.

The Royal Windsor Park fallow deer is perfectly pink and paired divinely with a Torres Mas Plana Penedes juicy red wine, from Spain. The elevation of every dish is exquisite, and by the time the pre-dessert and dessert are gobbled up, you might just forget everything you’ve eaten before. The titles of Yorkshire rhubarb melba and hazelnut soufflè don’t come close to describing the heavenly flavours that make silence fall to our table, as we spoon up every last scraping.

Aldwickbury School Opens New Sports Facility

Last month saw the official opening of a new Sports Hall at the all-boys PrePrep and Prep School in Harpenden. Completed in the Autumn of 2022 the new facility provides a purpose-built space for the school and its community and features a multi-use games area, 3 cricket practice lanes, basketball nets and 4 badminton courts. A climbing wall is due to be installed later this year.

The new building designed by local architect Mark Eddison from MEB Design Ltd was opened by the school’s former Headmaster, Vernon Hales, whose vision for the sports hall ensured that the project was brought to fruition before his retirement from the role in 2021.

The opening event coincided with Aldwickbury commencing its 75th Anniversary celebrations and to mark both occasions a Time Capsule was buried at the entrance to the new sports hall. Containing a variety of mementoes and photos that demonstrate life at the school in 2023, the time capsule was buried by some of the school’s Year 8 boys accompanied by the Town Mayor of Harpenden, Lisa Scriven. The time capsule is designed to be opened in 2048 in the school’s centenary year.

Commenting on the new facility, Headmaster Paul Symes said, “This was a significant project

for the school and we’re delighted to have created a facility that will help create many lasting memories, sporting achievements and friendships. Sport plays an important role in supporting our academic offering, reinforcing our school values and providing the boys with the opportunity to learn lessons in both victory and defeat. We are also excited that this facility can support the wider community playing host to a variety of sports and activities.”

Plans for the school’s next development project are already underway with a new building proposed to further enhance the school’s facilities and demonstrate their curriculum commitment to STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths).

Top North London school Mill Hill appoints award-winning David Benson as new Head

to building on the many academic and pastoral strengths Mill Hill has, and helping to ensure all our pupils have the best possible start in life.”

“So many aspects of this role attracted me, but chief among them was the chance to work with such a committed community of staff, parents, pupils and Old Millhillians, as well as the other leaders in The Foundation.”

Antony Spencer, CEO, The Mill Hill School Foundation, said:

“David’s passion for education was clear to see throughout the recruitment process. His success at Kensington Aldridge Academy speaks for itself, from the growth of the number of pupils and staff over his 10 years to the high achieving A-level grades and the number of pupils accepted into universities.”

Mill Hill School has appointed David Benson as its new Head from January 2024.

Mr Benson joins from the award-winning Kensington Aldridge Academy (KAA), which he has led since September 2013, to replace Jane Sanchez, who is moving to another role within The Mill Hill School Foundation.

As the founding Principal of KAA, Mr Benson has overseen the huge progress of the academy, leading the Department for Education to place KAA in the top 5% of schools in the country.

Having been educated at St. Paul’s, Mr Benson qualified from the Teach First programme and has made the move from his most recent role in the state sector to the independent sector after 10 years at the academy, when the school had one year group. He has overseen the growth of the academy to a community of 1,300 pupils and 180 staff.

As a result, Mr Benson was named as one of the 10 most influential people in education by the Times Education Supplement in 2018. Mr Benson is also a published author on educational issues, with one of his own publications on curriculum planning currently included on PGCE courses.

Mr Benson has previously written for the national media, highlighting the potential benefits of building on the current partnerships that exist between private and state schools, focusing on the all-important objective of supporting pupils.

On his appointment, David Benson said:

“I am very excited to start my new role at Mill Hill School. I certainly saw during my visits to Mill Hill why it enjoys a reputation as a leading London independent school. I am looking forward

“His reputation for successfully fostering professional development to support teaching and learning was a key factor in making our decision. We were looking for someone who could continue and develop the brilliant job Jane Sanchez has started as she moves into another role within The Foundation. We are thrilled David has chosen to join the school and we are all excited for him to make his mark.”

Mr Benson already has experience of the private sector, holding a current role as Governor of Latymer Upper School, where he has taken an active role in managing partnerships between the state and independent sector.

Mr Benson’s predecessor and the current Head of Mill Hill School, Ms Sanchez, has been part of the Mill Hill Staff for the past twenty years, including as Head for the past five years. millhill.org.uk

Stars in their eyes

Enriching children’s learning experiences in school is vital in helping them to thrive academically and develop emotionally as well-rounded and resilient individuals. While drama, music and art have traditionally been the foundations for encouraging children’s creativity, one activity that is growing in momentum in prep schools is astronomy, and in particular stargazing. The desire to look up and to learn more about the skies that look down upon us, has led to schools like mine, creating opportunities for children to stargaze and learn more about the universe around them. Participating in astronomy-based activities like stargazing will help to foster an interest in science, but there is more to it than that. Stargazing encourages children to use their imagination, to question the how and the why of everything around them and it can even lead to exciting discussions like evolution and the power of gravity.

Children are naturally inquisitive, so having access to telescopes to widen their understanding of the skies and to better understand our own solar system, helps them to develop their own verbal reasoning and logic as well as their vocabulary and literacy. At the moment we are providing stargazing across all prep school year groups as part of STEM education, and we are even bringing astronomy into our nursery and

up to pre-prep in Year 2. Children are never too young to enjoy the awe and wonder of space. Looking up at the night sky can help to boost emotional development in young children, improving their independence, patience and their self-esteem. It can also help to improve concentration and focus as they learn to observe quietly, taking time and space to contemplate the world around them. Using special equipment like telescopes to stargaze, also pulls children away from computer screens, bringing them back to the natural world, as well as helping them to improve their fine motor skills and hand-eye cooordination.

Making stargazing accessible to younger children enriches their learning opportunities and you don’t even need a telescope. Learning can be supported through modern technology and special apps which help make it appealing to a wider audience. As well as looking at stargazing at an integral part of the STEM curriculum, some schools like mine, are also developing new co-curricular programmes with stargazing and astronomy clubs. Due to the popularity of stargazing in the prep school, we are also very excited to be opening our very own school observatory in 2023. The night sky may be vaster than we could ever imagine, but so is our children’s thirst for knowledge.

School days are deliberately longer than normal to allow pupils the time they need to recharge their batteries through well-considered breaks throughout the day. Sport for all and on a daily basis is a cornerstone of what is on offer, as is a wide range of academic subjects and cocurricular activities.

We pride ourselves on excellent Common Entrance results (100% pass rate). Recent leavers have joined Eton, Harrow, St Albans and Berkhamsted with a range of scholarships, awards and special commendations for exceptional exam results.

Our flexible boarding provision allows boys to gain confidence, independence and boost their self-esteem in a supportive environment. Friendships forged in the boarding house frequently last a lifetime. Senior Schools regularly comment how well-prepared our boys are for 13+ education.

Lockers Park has been educating boys for 150 years. Our experience teaches us that our boys-only approach creates a culturally and academically supportive environment, free of the social pressures seen in a co-educational setting. Allowing boys to convey ideas and solve problems without having to conform to societal expectations of what boys should be enables them to focus academically and express themselves more freely.

Habits of mind are at the heart of our curriculum. We use educational theory to adapt our teaching which develops boys’ skills with a practical, problem-based approach. This focus on how boys learn best helps increase concentration

We offer wraparound care that is second to none. Boys can arrive from 7.30am and stay until 7.30pm, receiving three high quality meals and enjoying the teacher-run afterschool activities. The optional Saturday School programme gives pupils access to lessons that will stretch their interests, or allow them to build greater understanding in areas where they need more support. This flexible offer is included within the school fees at no extra cost. Whilst many schools lose pupils in Year 7, we continue to grow due to the strength of our academic programme and success at sending boys to a wide range of Senior Schools. PRÊT-À-PORTEA RETURNS FOR SPRING / SUMMER 2023

ABOUT THE BERKELEY

Nestled between bustling Knightsbridge and leafy Belgravia, The Berkeley is the essence of contemporary chic and innovative luxury. Stunning rooms and suites are accompanied by Michelin-starred cuisine from Marcus Wareing, a fashion favourite afternoon tea at Prêt-àPortea and Cedric Grolet at The Berkeley, courtesy of one of the world’s most famous pastry chefs. Complete with the Blue Bar and The Berkeley Bar & Terrace for drinks, the Bamford Wellness Spa and a rooftop pool with jaw dropping Hyde Park views, The Berkeley continues to surprise and enchant.

The Berkeley has unveiled its Spring/ Summer 2023 Prêt-à-Portea collection – a playful and stylish selection of couture cakes inspired by designers from Kenzo to Moschino. A firm favourite with fashionistas with a sweet tooth, Prêt-à-Portea gives a contemporary twist to afternoon tea with a collection of bold catwalk-inspired creations.

This season’s collection opens with Loewe’s viral Anthurium dress, reimagined with Sacher sponge, espresso caramel and Valrhona 70% chocolate mousse, set on a croustillant base and topped with a chocolate flower. The Berkeley pastry team pays a heartfelt homage to the late and great Vivienne Westwood with a Madagascar vanilla biscuit portrait intricately iced, complete with iconic red hair.

Hermès’ tasselled bucket bag is crafted out of Victoria sponge sandwiched with apricot jam, wrapped in chocolate and finished with a chocolate feather plume. Moschino’s vibrant ensemble is made with tropical mousse with a banana and passion fruit centre, set on Sablé Breton biscuit and finished with a meringue flamingo.

Two designers appear in Prêt-à-Portea this

season for the very first time: Zimmermann’s playful striped co-ord is a cylinder of joconde sponge, filled with blueberry bavarois. This is topped with a chocolate skirt and wafer thin biscuit legs, akimbo. US label Thom Browne’s avant-garde look is a fraise des bois tart with strawberry crémeux, topped with a lime and mint truffle and red chocolate hat.

Finally, the season’s showstopper takes inspiration from Kenzo with a cake designed to share – a velvety citrus cream with lemon confit and coconut gel, set on a Sablé biscuit base and topped with sugar flowers.

The Spring/Summer season of Prêt-à-Portea is served from 1pm - 5.30pm every day, priced from £80 per person.

THE MOST IMPORTANT FASHION STYLES DAME MARY QUANT PUT HER OWN TWIST ON

The fashion designer recently died aged 93.

THE MINI SKIRT

Dame Mary began experimenting with shorter hemlines in the late 1950s, debuting the mini skirt – named after her favourite car – the following decade to great acclaim.

THE SHIFT DRESS

Alongside micro-minis, Dame Mary favoured sleek shift dresses in block colours and bold stripes. Made from easy-to-wear fabrics such as jersey and wool, the sporty designs often featured zips or button fronts.

TIGHTS

Prior to the Swinging Sixties, most women wore flesh-coloured stockings held up with garters or suspender belts hidden beneath knee-length skirts. Dame Mary collaborated with the Nylon Hosiery Company to create tights in bright colours to match her super-short skirts and dresses.

Dame Mary Quant is widely credited with popularising the mini skirt during the Swinging Sixties, but also became known for her groundbreaking designs. Following her death aged 93, we look at some of the most memorable styles she crafted and put her own twist on.

“Prior to the Swinging Sixties, most women wore flesh-coloured stockings held up with garters or suspender belts hidden beneath knee-length skirts”

TROUSERS

Dame Mary is responsible for helping to bring women’s trousers into the mainstream. From skinny cigarette pants to wide-leg styles, she encouraged the wearing of trousers for all occasions.

JUMPSUITS

She was a big proponent of one-piece designs such as jumpsuits. In the Sixties she debuted supershort ‘hot pant’ versions, while in the Seventies she introduced wide-leg styles with hoods or matching headscarves.

PINK POWER: How to wear spring’s biggest beauty trend

Embrace your inner Barbie girl this season, says Katie Wright

Pink was popping all over the spring/summer catwalks, with make-up artists at the big four fashion weeks jumping on the #Barbiecore bandwagon that has swept through the worlds of fashion and beauty.

“With the much-anticipated Barbie film starring Margot Robbie due for release in July and Pantone announcing Viva Magenta as 2023’s Colour of the Year, it’s clear that hot pink is in,” says Grace Vernon, head of global trends and cultural insights at Boots and No7 Beauty Company.

“Look out for the iconic ‘Barbie ponytail’ alongside bright pink eyeshadow, blush and lipstick, and hot pink nails.”

bright pink for your peepers.

“For a truly on-trend way to wear pink on the eyes, opt for a blue-toned shade with a subtle satin finish, giving it more of a grown-up look,” says Jasmine de Souza, education manager at 3INA.

“By patting this shade all over the lid with your ring finger, you’ll get a seamless finish without the need for blending.”

CHEEKS

“Blush is already having a moment, with sales of blush palettes at Boots increasing by 113% last year,” says Vernon.

“And with inspiration from TV shows such as Netflix’s Bridgerton, with its highly anticipated third series [hopefully] landing later this year, we predict this trend will be blowing up this spring.”

At Chet Lo SS23, MAC make-up artist Terry Barber placed acid pink blush high up on the temples in an Eighties homage.

“Use a sheer, buildable product that lets you gradually add intensity, without the fear of over-

applying,” de Souza advises. “You can add layers of pink to reach your desired look.”

LIPS

Pink lips on the catwalks ran the gamut, from glossy bubblegum (at Vivienne Westwood) to fuchsia (Paul Costelloe) and matte magenta (Carolina Herrera).

During awards season, actors such as Florence Pugh and Kate Hudson have been opting for softer shades and satin finishes to match their pink ensembles. So, it’s your choice on intensity, just make sure it’s pink.

outfits from the Georgian era – including the gown worn by Lady Helen Robertson in around 1760, which has a nearly three-metre wide skirt.

“We wanted to examine the 18th-century court through the lens of contemporary fashion – because there are so many similarities across the centuries,” Carol Swords, said creative programming and interpretation manager at Historic Royal Palaces.

The exhibition explores the links between dressing up for the Georgian court and the red carpet of today. By Prudence Wade.

Outfits once worn by Beyonce, Blake Lively, Billy Porter, Nicola Coughlan and Katy Perry populate the rooms of Kensington Palace, as part of a blockbuster new fashion exhibition.

Crown To Couture explores the similarities between fashion and celebrity in the 18th-century court and the red carpet today.

Nearly four years in the making, it’s the biggest exhibition ever put on at Kensington Palace. It brings together over 200 items – ranging from gowns to handbags and jewellery – many of which are instantly recognisable.

There’s the intricate gold embellished outfit and matching headdress by Peter Dundas that pregnant Beyonce wore to perform at the 2017 Grammys; the bright green Christopher John Rogers gown Lady Gaga donned – complete with a face mask – at the 2020 VMAs; and the intricate gold dress actor Billy Porter wore to the 2020 Oscars. Designed by Giles Deacon, the pattern of Porter’s dress was actually inspired by one of the rooms in Kensington Palace.

These are side-by-side with similarly extravagant

“As we dug deeper, we realised the Georgian era and the contemporary 21st-century – in terms of spectacle, in terms of life, in terms of how things are perceived – the red carpet and the Georgian court, there are so many connections.”

Each room is dedicated to a different aspect of attending a big event – from getting ready, to attending court or the red carpet, through to the after-party.

The similarities between the two eras are stark. In the room dedicated to getting ready, Georgian beauty products sit next to a table of modern make-up.

In the 18th-century, upper-class women would invite others to watch them get ready – which could take five or six hours – similar to the way ‘get ready with me’ videos have exploded in popularity on social media.

The King’s Gallery was the place where you wanted to look your best and be seen by others in the 1700s, and now it’s home to some of the most extraordinary outfits of the exhibition.

Many come from the Met Gala. Known as fashion’s biggest night, it’s one of the most important events for celebrities to be seen at every year.

Singer Billie Eilish’s romantic pink Oscar de la Renta gown – inspired by Marilyn Monroe and worn to the 2021 event – is the first thing you see

walking into the room, and is followed by a stream of recognisable looks.

These include singer Lizzo’s structural Thom Browne ensemble (worn to the 2022 Met Gala), model Iris Law’s Moschino gown (2022) and actor Blake Lively’s jaw-dropping Versace homage to New York architecture – worn when she was cochair of the event in 2022.

Throughout the modern aspects of the exhibition, there’s an emphasis on diversity and inclusion.

Swords explained the curators were keen to make it feel “as relevant as we possibly can”.

She said: “Those questions about diversity, gender, race, everything – we’ve embodied them, we’ve taken them on and we’ve taken that challenge – but we’ve tried to do it in a really sensitive way.”

Swords points to Beyonce’s Grammys outfit, displayed in the King’s Presence Chamber, flanked by Yeoman Warders either side.

In Georgian times, this is where monarchs would have received courtiers, ministers and foreign ambassadors, and Swords said placing Beyonce there was an opportunity to highlight her “black excellence”.

Swords wants visitors to see “that the connections across the century are more profound than we imagined.

“We always think the past is just the past, but human beings are human beings.”

Crown To Couture runs at Kensington Palace from April 5 to October 29.

CHAPLINS

Spring trend report

The spring that has sprung in the home this year is rather different from the blossomy florals and gentle pastels you might expect to see as the seasons start switching. This year, we want our rooms to be filled with wonder, to open doors to the unexpected and to show us a different perspective on that which we thought we knew.

Our living spaces should be statements, elicit quiet ‘wows’ and challenge the predictable. The 2023 palette is still based around the natural, but with a twist – some tones are bolder, brighter and brazen, while some blend into the backdrop like they’ve been there all along. Shapes and patterns experiment with minimalism which is impactful as well as elegantly pared back. Here’s the Chaplins edit of the very best.

VIVID SKIES

From energetic blazes of ochre to flashes of fiery orange and bursts of intense magenta, 2023 hues are a force of nature, looking to the skies for inspiration and coming back with something surprising. A celebration of the colours that dance across the skies on the most bewitching of nights and beguiling of mornings, these exuberant shades

enliven us, exuding energy and oomph.

The perky early morning/evening-is-coming golden tone of B&B Italia’s Metropolitan ME100 armchair by Jeffrey Bernett adds a whimsical, welcoming feel to the seat’s sculptural shape, a dazzling-yet-mellow flash of vitality which gives the whole room a glow.

Glas Italia’s XX Console Table by Johanna Grawunder is an exploration of light and colour made three dimensional. Harnessing the characteristics of a reflective glass prism, its intense pink and sizzling orange shades capture the hues of the most brilliantly-toned sky. COR’s Drop Pouf by Pauline Deltour joyfully deposits a bold burst of could-be-redcould-be-orange into a room, a shade from a sunset in its glorious final throws.

ANGULAR EXPLORATION

Unleash your wild side with the vogue for adventurous angles, courageous corners and liberated lines. A revolt against the rounded forms we’ve been drawn to until recently, these designs are experimental but approachable, their visual sharpness toned down by soft angles, natural materials, neutral shades and an abundance of creativity. It’s expect-the-unexpected with these objects, which flip reverse our go-to smooth shapes and care not for what came before.

Its surface decorated with minimalist modern marquetry, Gallotti&Radice’s Zen Desk by Massimo Castagna intersects angular segments of ash and rosewood for a simple yet striking asymmetric arrangement.

Merging the rounded with wide, open angles, Cattelan Italia’s Sautern Wall Mirror by Tosca Design is a geometric droplet, the area between the pointed steel frame and curved glass highlighted with cut-out negative space.

An explosion of criss-crossing shapes, the Big Bang Pendant Light by Enrico Franzolini and Vicente Gracia Jimenez for Foscarini is a jagged exploration of angular slices, shadows and diffused light.

SERENE SCENERY

If you listen carefully, you might hear the entire design world calling out ‘green is the new grey!’. Transformed into a background colour that’s snuck into our lives, the innately calming character of forest-y, fir-tinted, leafy green has wrapped around us with zero fuss and without anyone really noticing. It’s soothing, brings nature inside, goes with every colour in the spectrum, and makes us

exhale almost involuntarily.

Evoking images of sprawling Nordic firs, Muuto’s Cover Dining Chair by Thomas Bentzen feels like it’s just wandered in from the woodland, the timber’s grain remaining delightfully visible under its greenness.

Merging with the natural yet standing out for its industrial material, the green Outdoor Aplomb Pendant Light by Paolo Lucidi & Luca Pevere is crafted from concrete tinted in a soothing sage shade, ready to blend in with al fresco backdrops.

The textured, under-the-radar olive tone of Flexform’s Vulcano Outdoor Sofa by Antonio Citterio gives it an au-natural sense of tactility quietly dedicated to the beauty of nature.

OPEN STRUCTURES

Honour the craft skills that go into product design and embrace open structures, pieces that show off their frames, joints and supports and make them a beautiful part of their aesthetic. Honest, functionfused design is on the rise, pieces which don’t seek to hide their origins but are proud of them and harness them as decorative features. This new minimalism adds nothing which doesn’t need to be there, making the most of the building materials and methods which its construction relies upon. Its body poised within a frame made up of solid Canaletta walnut legs, Porada’s Regent Chest of Drawers by Marelli & Molteni hovers separately from its supporting structure, highlighting its elegant construction as well as the piece’s main body.

Turning joints into decorative accents, the Nimbus Mirror by Kroyer Saetter Lassen for Menu suspends its glazing within a ring of brass, while screws act as attractive accent detailing.

A grid-like skeletal structure of horizonal and vertical lines, the Coordinates C4 Ceiling Light by Michael Anastassiades for Flos illuminates and celebrates its simple scaffold-like form.

Summer Decorating Ideas

CREATE A COASTAL RETREAT

“There’s something undeniably restful about an easy, breezy coastal-inspired decor scheme. It works well in any room of the house but is particularly well-suited to living spaces, bedrooms, and bathrooms. The calming blues and crisp whites found in the Riviera, Aqua & Mineral colourways of our Portland fabric collection (pictured below) can be easily combined to create a soothing decor scheme that is synonymous with this laid-back nautical style. When combining striped fabrics, choose stripes with varying widths and patterns for a well-considered look.” advises Debbie.

Debbie continues, “The coastal decor trend can be as formal or as informal as you like, so have

fun with it and create something that appeals to you. Fabric that features coastal-inspired designs such as sea birds, corals, and boats are a great way to add personality and a splash of colour to your scheme. Finish the look with washed woods, natural jute rugs, and accessories such as seascape wall art and ship-worthy lighting.”

OPT FOR CLASSIC COUNTRY

“A classic country-style decor scheme takes inspiration from the natural world to bring colour, pattern and texture to a room in a soft, inviting way” explains Debbie. She continues, “To achieve this look combine natural materials such as wood and stone with layers of soft furnishings. This will bring warmth to your interior and create a welcoming country-style space that is easy to live with. Soft furnishing has a significant impact on the overall feel of a room, so choose your fabrics wisely. Layer plains and patterns carefully; when using patterns on upholstery it is best to keep the cushions plain or go for a plain fabric for the upholstery, and experiment with a mixture of colours and patterns on scatter cushions and throws.”

The Country Journal collection (pictured above and below) is perfect for those wanting to create an elegant country-style look. Debbie comments

114 MAY 2023 HOME & PROPERTY
Debbie Leigh, Design Manager at ILIV offers her expert advice as she reveals her inspiration for Summer ‘23 decorating schemes.
“The coastal decor trend can be as formal or as informal as you like, so have fun with it and create something that appeals to you”

“Inspired by the serenity of nature, Country Journal features studies of alliums, woodland grasses, and meadow flowers alongside beautiful ferns and flower heads - there are also classic coordinating fabrics including a classic stripe and small-scale designs. The colour stories are based on heritage paint colours making it an ideal choice for those wanting to create a sophisticated country-style interior.”

HOTEL CHIC

“Dressing your bed with a mixture of cushions in varying shapes and sizes, adding plush throws, and hanging stylish floor-length curtains are all great ways to help create a hotel-like feel in a bedroom” advises Debbie. She continues, “Cleverly layered textiles in different fabrics will not only create a cohesive look but will build a feeling of luxury. One of the most important factors to consider when combining different fabrics is the colours that are used. Ensure that they are tonal, so they complement one another; mix patterns and plains within a coordinated palette to create a harmonious scheme.”

“When it comes to using pattern, large-scale designs work best when used on large, statement pieces such as a dramatic pair of curtains or headboard. If space allows, go for drapes – the longer and wider the better for a dramatic hotel feel. In smaller spaces, using a pattern on a statement headboard or piece of furniture will add drama without overcrowding the room” comments Debbie.

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN

A botanical decor scheme is perfect for the Summer months and is a great way to create a link to your outside space. Debbie comments “To create a blissful botanical-inspired interior choose fabrics that reflect the great outdoors - leafy patterns in varying sizes are ideal for this scheme and look beautiful paired with real house plants. A botanical theme is suitable for any room of the house but works particularly well in a conservatory or garden room where you can incorporate your garden view.”

“Traditionally a conservatory is used as an extra seating area to enjoy the garden, but they actually make fabulous dining rooms too. Conservatory dining areas offer a great opportunity to experiment with pattern and colour and often it is the fabric that pulls a whole look together. From napkins to window dressings, there are endless

avenues to explore when designing your space” advises Debbie.

ORIENTAL INSPIRATION

Oriental decor schemes often conjure up feelings of peace and calm making them ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Debbie comments “For a zen-like space with a modern feel try basing your colour palette on a tranquil blue colour. Blue is set to be on trend for Summer 2023 and is both soothing and invigorating, offering plenty of design versatility. Used with crisp white and oriental style fabrics, it creates a cool calming feel - consider adding a statement piece of furniture in a standout colour such as a strong yellow to really make it sing.”

The Siyuri fabric collection offers a modern take on the traditional Chinoiserie design, and the Delft colourway (pictured above and below) is ideal for creating a blue decor scheme inspired by the Orient. Debbie comments “Large-scale prints in the Siyuri collection feature cranes in-flight and mandarin ducks, floating serenely on oriental lakes, surrounded by delicate water lilies. Bonsai, and other trees synonymous with the Chinoiserie style, can be seen throughout the collection in luxurious jacquards and rich detailed embroideries. Smaller scale, structured Chinese lattice designs, and softer textural fabrics are also available, allowing customers to easily combine fabric patterns to create beautifully layered, harmonious interior schemes.”

Discover the 1860 Bath Spa Collection from The Baked Tile Co

Want to inject some sunshine into the home this summer? Discover the 1860 Bath Spa Collection from The Baked Tile Co.

The 1860 Bath Spa tile collection is steeped in history – with its mosaic-effect surface giving off traditional encaustic vibes. However, this porcelain beauty has been manufactured in the 21st century, so while it might look timeless it is actually perfect for busy, contemporary homes.

So not only does this statement tile – which can be used on both walls and floors – look amazing, it will stand up to anything homeowners can throw at it (well, almost). It’s perfect for fireplaces, wet rooms and can even be used outside thanks to its frostproof, anti-slip finish. It also works with underfloor heating.

What’s more, the collection comes in two finishes – the Mosaic Bud Décor and Spa Leaf Décor – which gives homeowners a plethora of design options.

Lesley Taylor, Managing Director of The Baked Tile Co, said: “1860 Bath Spa is a stunning collection which is exclusive to The Baked Tile Co. With its bright yellow hues and mosaic finish, it’s a collection that commands attention.

“And because it is available in two different designs – the Leaf and the Bud – it opens up

considerable design options giving homeowners a bespoke finish.”

The Baked Tile Co design team also offer a design service for the 1860 Bath Collection. Their experts are on hand to help customers get the most out of their tiles by creating a visual and layout guide for installers.

SEVENOAKS HOUSE

comfort benefits of passive solar heating. Further to this, a sky lounge and external roof terrace was added to the third storey of the construction to enable and encourage quieter moments surrounded by nature.

Situated in the idyllic and highly desirable town of Sevenoaks, this five-bed replacement dwelling provided our design studio with a unique canvas on which to build.

Our replacement dwelling, designed closely with our client’s needs and preferences in mind, is a continuation of the local country home design philosophy, but with a distinctive, modern approach.

THE PROPOSAL

The metropolitan greenbelt is a cherished location and a welcome break from the claustrophobia of London’s urban landscape. When designing this house, we wanted the architecture to complement the greenery around it, rather than overpower and dominate the land. Working within the rules and regulations of the greenbelt, we proposed a home that adds value to the local area, whilst affecting the local environment as little as possible.

In our build proposal, the building is described as a ‘contemporary replacement dwelling providing a very high-quality design, suitable for modern living standards as well as capitalizing on the nature of the site.’

To achieve our proposed goals, we first changed the orientation of the home. This change has compounding benefits; not only does this rotation allow the home owners to enjoy the natural beauty of the local woodland, but also the economic and

The bottom floor of the building is a partial basement. To reduce the footprint of the construction and ensure that this new abode doesn’t break the natural shape of the surrounding land, we designed the bottom floor in such a way that it is built into the landscape itself. To add, the roof was also designed to be flat, to ensure that the silhouette of the house is as inoffensive as possible.

A UNIQUE CHARACTER AND A PERFECT STAGE FOR UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS.

This latest project from our architectural design studio has been an exercise in reinterpreting traditional architecture and bringing it to the new millennium. The material palette chosen for this project is one made primarily of marble and limestone. These natural materials echo the stately homes dotted nearby in style and longevity.

The building in its entirety is filled with character and provides the perfect backdrop for our client’s day-to-day lives. The open-plan layout accompanied by the skybox, infinity pool and frequent placement of windows immerses the building into nature as one continuous, unobtrusive structure, without sacrificing the privacy of its inhabitants. Many of the rooms were tailored with privacy as a focus. The bedrooms, en-suites, cinema and music room allow for total privacy from the outside world if wanted.

Our design studio worked hard to produce an end result that is both versatile and breathtakingly beautiful. This new home is a wonderful addition to Sevenoaks and will accompany the silhouette of this picturesque landscape for many years to come.
